I first told this story some twenty years ago, and it happened even earlier than that, so here's the Modern Retelling with Historical Context:
For many years, I had—well, you've heard of naturally curly hair? I had unnaturally curly hair. I had a stylist so brilliant that she was able to give me occasional perms that no one could tell were chemical. NO, FOR REAL, I constantly got compliments on my long, rippling hair. In reality, my hair is deplorably fine and flat, although I'm told I have a ton of it; putting in some wave made me feel better, you know? I just wanted to co-wash, air-dry, and go live my tousled life. But after my spinal surgery, I just couldn't spend 2-3 hours in a stylist's chair anymore. And so, after 20 years of my best Galadriel impression, I've had to make peace with my natural texture, the only thing about me (I realize now) that is actually straight.
But this story takes place back in 1996; I was a junior in high school, and I had the freshest of perms. Just absolutely exuberant. Downright Pre-Raphaelite. It had only been done the weekend before, and it usually took about two weeks for the curls to settle down and look less poodly natural, but I wasn't going to miss Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet. When I was in grad school years later, my Shakespeare professor went to the mat for this movie, declaring it the best adaptation of any of his plays. And she wasn't a Leo fangirl, either. I tend to agree. And I got to see it on a big screen, opening night, with my best friend and my fresh luscious elbow-length '90s 'do. Banger soundtrack, the big bold visuals that tip over into Maybe Too Much in Moulin Rouge—I'm enthralled, I'm absorbed. Claire Danes is weeping over Dead Romeo, and we all know what’s about to happen in this, a 400-year-old play, but you still hope against hope that somehow it won’t this time. And then I feel something that's not emotion.
Something behind me. In my hair.
It's clammy. This tiny moist hand... creeping... up my neck.
Bear in mind, these are classic movie theater seats, not the big recliners you get now. My head is vulnerable to rear attack. And these tiny fingers, like a gummy little doll's hand, are crawling up my neck, under, through my hair. I am now sitting bolt upright, frozen. What the fuck is going on. It’s still creeping like a little spider up my scalp to the back of my head—put your hand up to yours, get your fingertips to the roots of your hair and really get a sense of what this feels like—
These fingers close, slowly, around the greediest handful of hair they can get hold of, and YANK.
I whip around while Juliet is sobbing—darkness.
To this day, I have no idea who (or what?) that tiny hand belonged to. I mean, you gotta think it was a small child enticed by the siren song of my curls, right? Some parents just didn’t spring for a babysitter on a big opening night, and there’s a Millennial out there with some real interesting core memories, I guess? I couldn't make out anything in the darkness behind me, and we were at kind of a key cinematic moment, so I didn't have time for more than a stern warning glare To Whom It Might Concern. And then I held onto my hair for the remainder of the movie. I chopped it all off within a few months, and went to college with short, straight hair, unable to forget the Cursèd Touch of the Hand. lol jk I just wanted a change and regretted it instantly.
So, happy 20th anniversary to the story I told on the Fametracker forums all those years ago. I can still remember exactly what that hand felt like: tiny. And moist.
Happy 2023 everybody! It's a new year meaning I've got new goals to meet. Goals like finally publishing something, setting up commissions so people can pay me to do what I love, cross-posting between my account here and on deviantART, summoning more kaijus just so they can play elaborate games of poker, y'know, all that good stuff. It also means the return of my 'list of things that have reached a milestone anniversary' list. However, it seems like I've been doing this for so long that these lists have in fact reached their own milestone. From what I could tell, this is the fifth year of my doing this, at least on deviantART. If that doesn't make you feel right from the gate, I present the following:
If I don't mention this my buddy Volts48 won't let me rest; the highly influential sci-fi movie Metropolis turns 100 years old this year, meaning it is now in the public domain. I plan to take full advantage of this fact later, but for now I have the rest of this list to get to...

Since my still favorite live action Spider-Man is returning to theaters and this year marks it’s 20th anniversary. I wanted to throwback to my review of it. Which is also about to turn 10. A lot of milestones with this one. I really love this movie and it’s ability to capture the classic Ditko and Lee vibe but also Romita. I just love this thing. Will have to do a rewatch.
Even if I associated this thing more with July 4th it’s back in theaters so why not now.
But seriously I have seen this movie so many times and it’s always so good.
“On this day in 1976, the David Bowie LP “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars” re-entered the US Billboard 200 Album Chart at #160 (March 6).
Originally released in 1972, this is widely considered to be Bowie's breakthrough album. The record is a loose concept album based around the character Ziggy Stardust, a fictional androgynous rock star who is sent to Earth as a saviour before an impending apocalyptic disaster. The title track is about Stardust growing too conceited: "Making love with his ego, Ziggy sucked up into his mind." Stardust's band, The Spiders From Mars, consequently plan to get revenge on the egotistical front man: "So we bitched about his fans, and should we crush his sweet hands?" Bowie said that the song is "about the ultimate rock superstar destroyed by the fanaticism he creates. "In 1993, Bowie discussed the “look” he was going for: “The idea was to hit a look somewhere between the Malcolm McDowell thing with the one mascaraed eyelash and insects. It was the era of Wild Boys, by William S. Burroughs ... [It] was a cross between that and Clockwork Orange that really started to put together the shape and the look of what Ziggy and the Spiders were going to become ... Everything had to be infinitely symbolic.”In 1987, as part of their 20th anniversary, Rolling Stone ranked it #6 on "The 100 Best Albums of the Last Twenty Years". In 2020, Rolling Stone ranked it #40 on their list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.In March 2017, the album was selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry by the United States National Recording Preservation Board, which designates it as a sound recording that has had significant cultural, historical, or aesthetic impact in American life. The album peaked at #2 in Spain, #5 in the UK, #11 in Australia, #59 in Canada, and #75 in the US. A re-release after Bowie’s death in 2016 saw the album back in the charts, this time peaking at #21 in the US.”

HEALTH AND WELLNESS
Pictured: Our new logo.
Made it through an awful health scare that had me in and out of the hospital (as a result of medication and many misdiagnoses). Luckily I am totally recovered!
Also made it through COVID for the first time (due to aforementioned health issues this was particularly difficult)
Got outstanding support for my long-term sleep issues
Fully upgraded my motherboard, CPU, and graphics card!
Lined up for a nice raise at my day job (I'm working 45-50 hours a week at a day job, on top of all of this, to fund the demo).
Celebrated my nine year anniversary with my partner. Without her support I could not have done any of this.
We made it! That's the entire recap. I can hardly believe that this year was so remarkably productive, despite everything.
Thank you so much for reading this far and joining me in 2023! This coming year I have BIG plans for development. All of us at Just Write Studios are working incredibly hard to complete the demo of Catalyst: Blind Faith. My goal is to complete the script for the full game, and to get as many art assets commissioned as possible. We still have a lot of work to do, but I am more motivated and determined than ever to get it all done!
Patrons will be getting sneak previews at art assets as they are made, script excerpts, and a whole lot more. Keep an eye out on our socials for updates! You can find us on Discord, Twitter, Tumblr, Itch.io, Ko-Fi, and here on Patreon.
I hope you have a fantastic new year. Here's to a bright and productive 2024! See you soon!

18. A memorable meal this year?
Cocktails at the incredibly fancy place in New York probably, though that was as much because of the fear searing the 'spending a couple hours sitting on a rooftop patio 64 stories up' thing into my memory as the (incredibly good!) cocktails and food.
For those who grew up in the 2000s, waiting for the next Harry Potter film installment was a thrilling and unifying experience. As kids all around the world flocked to their local theaters with wands in hand, Harry and his fantastical friends reminded us of the magical powers of friendship, bravery, and love. While the movies got progressively darker as the characters grew up and had to battle ever-looming forces of evil, the first films remain pillars of delightful, whimsical escapism — save for the near-deaths of multiple twelve-year-olds — and this is largely thanks to director Chris Columbus. What many people don’t know, however, is that Columbus passed on another once-in-a-lifetime directorial opportunity for Potter, turning down the Spider-Man franchise in favor of the wizarding world.
Chris Columbus Chose To Direct 'Harry Potter' Over 'Spider-Man’
Known for writing and/or directing hit movies like The Goonies, Home Alone, and Mrs. Doubtfire, by the time the early aughts rolled around, Columbus was no stranger to working with kids and yielding great results. Having been persuaded by his daughter to read the Harry Potter books (at which time only the first three had been released), Columbus immediately had a vision for the films and wanted a shot at directing the now-iconic series. According to The Hollywood Reporter, after hearing that there were many others eager to helm the franchise, Columbus requested that his agent secure him the final meeting with the film’s executives. He presented a “130-page document-slash-screenplay” outlining his vision for the movie, and long story short, the powers that be were very impressed with the eager director. Columbus secured the gig and went on to direct both Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
However, Columbus revealed in an interview with Screen Rant that right after he landed Harry Potter, he got the offer to direct Spider-Man. Having grown up a huge Marvel fan and citing Spider-Man as one of his childhood heroes, getting the chance to re-introduce the web-slinger to the silver screen seems like it would be a no-brainer for Columbus. Nevertheless, while he acknowledged that directing Spider-Man would probably be the realization of a lifelong dream, he went with Harry Potter and never looked back. Sam Raimi was hired to captain the Spidey ship, and the rest is history. Even though it was undoubtedly a tough call, Columbus has no regrets, and said in the special Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts that working on Harry Potter was “the greatest experience of [his] life.”
Columbus Expertly Captured the Joy and Whimsy of ‘Harry Potter’
While it couldn’t have been easy missing out on Spider-Man, there’s no denying that Chris Columbus was the right man to direct the first two Harry Potter films. In Return to Hogwarts, Columbus got to reunite with Harry Potter himself (Daniel Radcliffe), and the two discussed their work on Sorcerer’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets. Although you’d never know it when watching the behind-the-scenes footage, Columbus confessed to Radcliffe that while working on the first Harry Potter, he was incredibly nervous and felt like he was “dying.” This is definitely understandable given that he was responsible for setting the tone in a massive franchise, but Columbus ensured that his anxieties wouldn’t bleed over and impact the kids on set. Many of the stars of Harry Potter, including Robbie Coltrane, Tom Felton, and of course, the golden trio of Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, and Radcliffe, complimented Columbus’s knack for working with the young performers on set, saying that he made them feel safe and let the kids be kids. While “letting the kids be kids” resulted in a lot of long days and re-shoots given that the kids in question were exploding with excitement at all times, Columbus’s good nature evidently contributed to the youthful, nostalgic feeling that is so well-executed in the first films.
Beyond just his personable directing style, Columbus’s creative eye greatly influenced the look of the Harry Potter movies. From real stone floors to real, lit candles dangling from the ceiling on fishing lines, the director’s commitment to making Hogwarts feel grounded in reality despite the magical elements made the stories feel all the more real to both the actors involved, and the devoted viewers. Despite the success of the first two Harry Potter films, however, Columbus seemed to recognize that all good things must come to an end, and he bequeathed his directorial duties to Alfonso Cuarón for the third installment, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Columbus revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that filming the first two Harry Potter films took upwards of 320 days, and that he felt that he was missing out on watching his kids grow up. He went on to serve as a producer on the third film to help maintain a better work-life balance, but afterward, the director hung up his pointy black wizard’s hat and walked away from the franchise for good.
The Director Isn’t a Fan of the ‘Harry Potter’ Reboot at Max
Harry Potter is soon to be getting a polarizing facelift in the form of a reboot TV series, the likes of which we know very little about. What we do know, however, is that Chris Columbus isn’t a huge fan of the idea, not seeing the point in remaking a franchise that has already been done well (which, as we know, has never stopped the studios before). Furthermore, given author J.K. Rowling’s disappointing tailspin into transphobia, continuing to expand the Harry Potter franchise has brought up difficult but important conversations about just how far we’re willing to go to separate the art from the artist.
While it sucks that a franchise that brought comfort and hope to so many has been marred by its creator’s hateful statements, Columbus’s Harry Potter movies continue to exist as joyful celebrations of friendship and resilience. For many fans, Harry Potter still offers an unparalleled escape from the hardships of the everyday muggle existence, and we’ll always be grateful that Columbus decided to leave the Spider-Man movies to Sam Raimi, who got to forge another iconic film franchise in his own right. While the Harry Potter frenzy shows no signs of stopping, Columbus left his own indelible mark on the franchise, and all we can say is, mischief managed.

Ah yes, this is where you will find my older Sherlock fics. Truth be told, I was hesitant to put forth these fics on a masterlist of their own, but I wouldn’t be where I am now with Sherlock if I hadn’t taken the first steps in writing them. Please note a majority of these are written in first person instead of second and third which I rely on more now.

Pour one the fuck out for the darker-timeline Storm King AU and specific the long Agatha story Not A Hero, which I really thought, at the start of the year, that I might resume work on in order to present some sort of finished work for the official 20th anniversary of the comic in November. Instead, I got re-obsessed with Tolkienia, and did literally nothing for the anniversary.
“Hiiiyah!”
The spider’s head disappeared in a flash of swords, and a woman with green hair kicked the body away. She remained crouched for a moment, wary, then tucked one of her blades into a sheath on her back and tugged Agatha into a sitting position. “Hey, you all right?”
“Um.” Agatha gestured to her legs, still bound in webbing.
“Right.” Snk went the sword, and the silk fell away like…like silk, but not the sort from a spider as tall as Agatha’s waist.
(if I finish it before the comic itself ends, I still win, right?)
It's as if we just exited film awards season and now we are in Emmy For Your Consideration (FYC) season and there is already talk about possible 2024 Oscar nominees with the excellent Ben Affleck directed AIR (an interesting and engaging look at how the Michael Jordan collaboration changed the landscape for Nike and athlete campaigns forever) being bandied about. Cannes Film Festival is in May, but before that we can see some of the more pedestrian films that will be adorning theater marquees in coming months thanks CinemaCon - the annual showcase for theater owners.
Hopefully no one will be getting served with legal papers this year!
