— CHRISTMAS SPIRIT : twisted wonderland
[synopsis] they couldn’t go back home for the holidays, so how do they spend them with you?

★﹕ACE TRAPPOLA — building a snowman
The streets were decorated with colorful lights, lamp posts had ribbons wrapped around them, and kids were running around playing with the snow. You could tell it was Christmas season from a mile away just by looking at the huge Christmas tree that decorated the park.
Even if it was around 7 pm, the streets were full of people shopping at the last hour. The windows of the stores were all advertising discounts to get more sales, from expensive items to affordable ones.
Ace had already bought your gift weeks ago. It was something you mentioned you wanted once, you probably had forgotten about it, but he had saved for months just to see the smile on your face when you opened it.
While walking to a cafe Cater recommended, you saw some kids making a snowman together in a nearby park while their parents chatted while sitting on a bench. Grabbing Ace's hand, you rushed to a spot in the park and rolled some snow to make the body. He protested at first but he got to work almost immediately.
Helping you decorate it was the fun part. He collected some pebbles while you continued molding it. As he decorated the face so it would look like it was frowning, he laughed at you for protesting about the facial expression. Ace said it was ‘the best snowman in the park’ and that you both ‘won against those kids’. You grabbed your scarf and wrapped it around the snowman, claiming it was so it wouldn't 'feel cold'.
Sadly, you forgot the weather was below 0°; but before you could even say something or complain, you felt Ace wrapping his red scarf carefully around your neck.
“Sheesh, I’m your boyfriend, and you’re favoring a snowman over me. I'm going to freeze now, you know? …I'm just teasing, let's go or we won't find any tables available.”
★﹕RIDDLE ROSEHEARTS — decorating a gingerbread house
Usually, Sam makes Christmas sales in the Mystery shop around December, but this year it made a huge fuss because of the new items he added. The students that stayed in school grounds were buying almost everything, so you thought you could check it out.
All the items were eye-catching, but a particular gingerbread house set stood out the most. It was selling fast, and you wanted one, so why wouldn't you buy one to decorate with your boyfriend?
Riddle couldn't say he was surprised when you showed up in his room with a box of frosting sleeves and gingerbread walls. A few Heartslabyul students who stayed too bought some sets and decorated them in the common areas (and that got them collared, which made them have to go to their own rooms or the cafeteria tables). He thought about it and decided to give it a try, since he wanted to spend time with you and he already finished his book of crosswords.
His side of the gingerbread house looks neat, exactly like a model a company would use in an advertisement, following the instructions carefully paid off. Your side looks slightly messy, with the frosting dripping on the sides and some of the candy falling off. The best way to describe it would be like an earthquake happened, and it only affected half the house. But Riddle still liked it; he could see the effort you put into it; you could even say he felt fond of it.
Riddle had a lot of fun decorating and spending time with you. You handed him the colorful chocolate candy package as he gave the final touches on the ceiling.
It wasn't the perfect house, but it was one made by the both of you.
“It isn’t tidy or neat, yet it has a certain charm to it... Don't put frosting on my face!”
★﹕KALIM AL-ASIM — singing christmas carols
He really likes spoiling you, and you could tell that he was planning something big due to how big his grin had been since December started.
Kalim promised to walk you to Ramshackle after the end of your classes, promising to spend the rest of the day with you. He even finished his homework for the end of the break early so Jamil couldn't object!
The second the bell that indicated the start of winter break rings, Kalim rushes out of the classroom, going straight to the stairs so he could go meet you on another floor. Jamil had to yell at him from a distance to not walk too quickly or he would slip and fall off the stairs. Kalim looks like an excited puppy waiting for you in the hallway, wanting to receive that kiss you always give him as s greeting, it's the best part of his day.
He grabs your hand and starts walking to Ramshackle, excitedly telling you about his plans for the both of you for the winter break, talking about the gifts he will send to his siblings, and about the meal you can both have on the 25th. When the both of you run out of conversation topics, Kalim just hums the melody of a carol, swinging the arm, holding your hand back and forth, and walking as quick as he could.
Kalim looks back at you, giving you the brightest smile he can physically make, and asks you to sing along with him. He'll teach you the lyrics. Or maybe, if you want to, you can both sing carols from your world.
He's just a big fan of carols; he even tells you about how Jamil and he sang them together every Christmas when they were kids. He would love the idea of being able to sing with you together; he wants to know more about you and the traditions in your world.
“Come on, let’s sing together! We can be like a duo; it’ll be so much fun!”
★﹕VIL SCHOENHEIT — watching christmas movies
As soon as he found out you were staying at the school grounds during the holidays, he invited you to stay in Pomefiore. Vil can't have you getting sick or getting your skin dry; the coldness of the environment wasn't good for anyone's skin.
Vil arranged a room for you with all the necessary things you could need, even preparing a set of expensive pajamas he bought for you as an early gift, yet you still sneaked at night to sleep in his bed. It's not like he was complaining; it helped him sleep better at night. You are made to go to sleep early anyway, sleeping is important to maintain your natural beauty.
The second day you opened in your laptop the huge catalog of the (expensive) streaming service you bought especially for the holidays. You asked Vil to watch some Christmas movies with you and he agreed. He knew you weren't familiar with this world's iconic movies, so he would act as your guide.
The both of you made it a habit to sit in his bed a few hours before bedtime and watch some Christmas movies. You played a movie he recommended or that caught your eye, got comfortable, laid your head on his shoulder, and he got to speak about his thoughts on the actor's performance. This was the routine you both followed every day. But one particular movie caught your eye—one he starred in months before entering NRC.
It was good; it was a rom-com where he starred as a side character. You found yourself watching it multiple times, even in his absence. It was a movie with a good plot, your boyfriend starred in it, and he got to talk about the behind the scenes. It was a win-win.
“Did you enjoy my performance, hm? My acting is always on point; expect nothing but the best from me.”
★﹕MALLEUS DRACONIA — sharing hot chocolate
Since Malleus stayed behind because he wanted to spend the holidays with you, that meant the rest of the Diasomnia family did too, so they were all invited to a Christmas sleepover at Ramshackle. And he could never decline an invitation, especially from you.
Sebek was delighted to drink something sweet, just like Grim, who was happy to be able to eat whatever he wanted. Lilia was reminiscing over old memories of when they were younger, like a proud father would, and Silver was listening and adding more to what Lilia was saying.
There was something comforting about the heat coming from the mug he was holding and the sweater you bought specially for him. Malleus has never been sensitive to the cold weather, but the warmth he felt in his heart seeing how well you got along with important people in his life was more than welcomed. It was simple—nothing like the fancy celebrations at his castle back home—just the six of you spending time together while chatting about anything.
It wasn't a foreign feeling; he often felt this way around you, but he could never get enough of it. He smiled at you as you refilled Sebek's mug, who was discussing with Silver about their childhood memories, while you listened intently, clearly interested. Lilia noticed Malleus staring at you and teased him about it, but Malleus only smiled proudly at him and kept drinking from his mug; some of the marshmallows you added to his cup sinking to the bottom.
If any other student witnessed it, they would be speechless over how Malleus Draconia, the scary prince nobody wants to anger, was so content drinking hot chocolate with whipped cream and marshmallows in a snowman mug. But they would be even more speechless if they saw the tender way he looked at you.

Bake Sale
Due to Girl Scout season, (and me buying boxes) I just got an idea, so here yall go! (03. 16. 2023)
'So... hot'
(Name) could only think about how HOT Ramshackle was right now. Thanks to that useless crow of a man, Ramshackle was the only dorm without an AC unit or any type of fan. It's the middle of summer vacation and there is no airflow through the dorm.
"(Name) pleassseee do something about this heat, I think Grim is about to die".
"Wow, I bet you regret skipping Crewl's classes now" chuckled Deuce.
"We are both in summer school, shut up Deuce".
All the mirrors going into the dorms were locked up tight for the summer, leaving all the students who needed to catch up stay in Ramshackle, which was not alot of students.
"Listen guys, if I had the money I would totally buy a unit but I have no money or a job right now".
"UGH" Ace yelled, "why can we just go to the beach or sneak into Savanaclaw's pool!". Ace marched towards the windows and began opening all the ones in the living room.
"Because what teacher will gives us a pass to go relax when you three are supposed to being doing your homework and classwork you missed!". (Name) was getting overwhelmed, they knew they should've taken Leona's or Malleus's offer on staying with either of them during summer break.
"(Nammmmmmeeeeee)" Grim cried, "please do something about this heat", Grim fell to the floor.
"Fine, let me figure something out".
"Yay!!" The three cried.

(Name) walked out the campus kitchen, carrying two buckets of ice with them back to Ramshackle.
'Shit'
The ice was already melting.
'How the hell are we going to live in a magical world and not have any ice magic or spells?'.
As they made their way inside the Dorm they started opening windows, turning on the fans to on the highest settings, on cheap fan on its back with the bucket of ice holding its weight.
'Finally'. (Name) took in the cold breeze that filled the room. Grim came running down the hall putting his fatass in front of the semi broken fan. "Ahhhhhhh finally! Took you way to long henchman".
(Name) rolled their eyes, "Now that's done, I think I'm going to get a sweet treat." The word 'treat' summoned all three braincells.
"What are you gettin".
"Can I have soommme?".
"Can I help?".
'Jesus Christ' (Name) sighed, "I was feeling nostalgic and wanted to bake...."
Ace and Grimm groaned, throwing themselves back onto the "cold" ground.
Deuce looked confused, "I'm sorry perfect, why are you going to bake when it's-"
"Fucking thousands degrees out-" Ace interrupted.
Deuce glared.
"You guys don't have to help with anything, I was kinda of planning on doing this for myself...". (Name) walked away towards the kitchen.
"Nonono, I'll help you perfect!!" Deuce ran after (Name).
(Name) opened the cupboard, 'thin mints orrrrrrrrrr, hmm, wait samoas?'.
(Name) looked over at Deuce, "Deuce, one or two?".
"Um one?"
"Thin mints it is".
♡
Aced let out a moan.
"Damn buddy that's like your 10th one...".
Ace had tears in his eyes,"it's.. so... good".
(Name) gave the three a look; hunched over the counter, all groaning in happiness.
"Are these from your world perfect?".
(Name) nodded, "Yeah, there's actually-".
"Don't care make more!".
"Hench man please!"
(Name) looked at Ace and Grimm in shocked, "you know a simple please would do... also Grimm can you even have chocolate?".
Ace rolled his eyes, "the little shit ate rocks for the past year-". His comment made Duece hit him on the back of the head.
"Anyways, Perfect, do you think we can take some to lunch tomorrow?".
"Sure, I'll probably be baking all tomorrow... nothing else to do".
☆
"Oi oi crabby~ whatcha got there?".
Instinctively Ace put the brown lunch bag towards his chest, "none of your-"
"HEYYY!!". Grimm screeched
"Sh sh baby seal, let me just borrow your bag."
Grimm beated his paws on Floyd's stomach, "No! You can't have that! (Name) made those specially for me!!" He whined.
"Oh~ Shrimy made these?". Floyd popped a cookie in his mouth.
The world stopped for a minute, Floyd giving the three a lead stare. "Uh, you good bro?". Ace went to put his hand on Floyd's shoulder only to be bitten by said eel.
"FUCK HE BIT MY SHIT".
Floyd stole the bag of cookies and made a dash for the door.
"MY TREATS!!" Grimm wailed.

(Name) hummed as they baked their third round of cookies, the last batch being Samoas now they were working on peanut butter. 'I guess always baking with Trey was worth the lessons-'
Que their front door being broken in with two distressed students.
"PERFECT HELP I NEED STERILIZATION STAT-"
"HENCHMAN! I NEED NEW COOKIES! THAT DISGUSTING EEL STOLE MY COOKIES!".
'There goes my peaceful afternoon'.
(Name) grabbed the first aid kit to help Ace, letting the two whine and nag about their day.
Grim plopped himself on (Name)'s lap, "So.... can you give us more cookies?".
"Sure, just don't let anyone take them this time."

The next day at lunch was... eventful...
"ILL TAKE A BAG FOR $10!".
"NO! $50!".
"MAKE IT $90!".
It was like watching a pack of hyenas swarm a prey, three pairs of eyes watched from a distance.
"So... it's just cookies?". Azul observed the growing hysteria with a careful eye.
Jade snickered, "I think it's more than cookies sir~"
Azul grabbed a cookie from Floyd's bag, observing before taking a nibble.
Jade laughed, "so? What's the verdict-".
"Schedule a meeting with the perfect."

"FLOYD PUT ME DOWN!!". (Name) was hunched over Floyd's shoulder.
Azul took a deep breath, "Floyd put the perfect down-".
CRASH
Azul felt a migraine forming, rubbing his temples. "So... perfect". Azul forced a smile.
"I'm not making a dea-".
"Listen! What about a business partnership? With your cookies-".
"No."
"There will be money, 50/50".
"I already-"
"And! I'll ask threaten the headmaster to give your.... Ramshackle upgrades".

'It's so much hotter than the inside of Ramshackle'. (Name) was miserable, sitting at a stand in Port Town trying to sell cookies, THEIR cookies. Luckily, that ocean breeze was... somewhat frequent.
"Hggnnngg Henchman I'm bored.... let's dip".
(Name) rolled their eyes, "You got us into this mess...".
"Ha! How was I supposed to know Azul was also in summer school!". Grim threw himself under the table.
"How's business perfect?~".
"Shrimpy~!".
(Name) gave Jade a glare, "I'm miserable - it's too hot for this shit."
Floyd blew a raspberry, "Well! We have something to cheer you up-"
"A gun?"
Grim came up from the table, "AH! It's me!".
(Name) looked at the two confused, "a cardboard cut out of Grim?".
The cutout was... interesting, depicting Grim in a hat and... boots.
'Is there a puss and-'
Jade smiled softly, "Azul said it could help drive in business having a mascot~".
4/13/2024 I kinda gave up towards the end... this has been sitting in drafts for a year.... I cant figure out how to end this but Perfect gets a pool in Ramshackle in my head so :)

“What are we even here for?” Seungmin asked, feigning annoyance as you roamed aimlessly through the aisles of the supermarket.
“I don’t remember,” you replied, wandering into the haircare aisle.
Seungmin huffed, although you didn’t miss the soft smile on his lips before he did so. “That’s why I told you to write a list or something, baby, you always forget.”
When Seungmin had introduced you to his friends, they’d been expecting someone scholarly, quiet and well-organised; essentially, a second Seungmin. “Did you meet her in the library?” Hyunjin had teased. “No, in the stationary section looking at notebooks!” Jeongin had snorted.
However, when you proved to be almost as chaotic, if not more, than Han Jisung himself, they’d been surprised, albeit happily. You couldn’t be more different from Seungmin; you were very physically affectionate, and had no troubles expressing your emotions through words. You were forgetful, yet refused to take actions to prevent it. You were sporadic and inconsistent, planning things last minute and taking your boyfriend on adventures on a whim. It had taken Seungmin time to get used to you when you first met as friends, but he soon found himself drawn to your confidence and chaos. You were a bit all over the place, yes, but you were his, and you found he helped contain the unhelpful aspects of your personality, such as struggles to focus and just generally get shit done, whilst you brought out the louder, gigglier side of him.
“Oh well,” you chuckled and shrugged, pulling out bottles of shampoo and examining the labels closely. “Ooh, this one’s on sale, Seung! Maybe I should try it, your big sister told me it was really good.”
Seungmin took the bottle out of your hand and placed it back on the shelf. “No,” he said stubbornly.
“Excuse me, Kim Seungmin?” You raised an eyebrow and crossed your arms across your chest. “I think I’m allowed to select my own shampoo brand.”
Seungmin rolled his eyes. “You wouldn’t smell the same, stupid. I like the one you use now. It’s nice.” He pulled you close and shoved his face into your hair to prove his point, and you giggled and smacked his arm lightly.
“What a sappy baby,” you tsked, pinching his cheek and grabbing two bottles of your usual shampoo and conditioner.
“Is that everything?”
“I just want to look around, Seung, then I’ll remember,” you pushed the trolley happily, skipping a little.
“Baby, we’ve been looking around for like twenty minutes. It’s gonna get dark soon, and it’s already snowing outside.” Seungmin gestured out the big windows, where flecks of snow drifted through the wind, dusting the cars parked outside, including yours, like icing sugar.
“Okay, okay, fine,” you huffed, picking up your two bottles and returning your trolley, and he shook his head. You squealed as he scooped you up, staggering along to the cashier.
He deposited you, and you paid for your items, then ran outside, almost slipping on the icy tarmac.
“It’s so pretty,” you gasped, squeaking as a snowflake landed on your nose and another melted down your cheek. “It’s very cold, though. Can we get inside, Seung?”
He nodded and opened the car, and you bundled yourself into the passenger seat, shivering as he turned the heater on.
“Dramatic, much,” he chuckled fondly, starting the engine.
“Shut up, I’m so cold,” you hissed through your teeth, blowing on your hands. “Hey, stop that, turn the car off.”
“That’ll turn the heater off,” Seungmin stated.
“I don’t care.”
“Where the fuck is your logic, baby?” Seungmin laughed.
You shook your head and dragged yourself over the console, planting yourself onto his lap. His cheeks flushed a little and he took the keys out, his arms moving to your waist automatically.
“You’re really warm, Seung,” you mumbled into his shoulder, wrapping your arms around his neck. “You’re always so warm, like, you just make me feel so cosy and soft and fluffy and gross.”
“Gross? Excuse me?”
“In a good way. I feel so sappy and lovey-dovey when I’m with you. I disgust myself. If I saw a couple acting like this in public, I’d be like, ew, that’s so weird, but I love acting like that with you. It doesn’t feel cliche or weird. It feels right.”
“Oh, baby.”
“Shush. You’re gonna make me blush.”
Seungmin lifted your head off his shoulder. “You already are, idiot.”
You slapped his cheek lightly. “Fuck off. It’s your turn to be overly sappy with your feelings now, Seung.”
Seungmin took a deep breath. “When I first got with you, all the guys were so surprised, because you’re so different to me. And when they were surprised, it made me nervous, because I trust them so much, though you better not tell them that, or they won’t shut up about it. Then Chan told me he hadn’t seen me act so carefree, so happy around anyone like this in a long, long time. He said he thought you were so good for me, you brought out parts of me he missed seeing.”
You stared into his eyes, biting back a smile.
“And it’s true. I’ve never really felt this happy around anyone before. I worry less, and when I worry, it's less about myself. Because I know you don’t care about the things I worry about myself; like my appearance, or my personality. You just love me. And I’ve never been loved like that before.”
“You went way sappier than I did, loverboy,” you giggled, but pressed a kiss to the corner of his lips. “I love you so much, and it makes me happy that I make you as happy as you make me. You’re mine, yeah, Seung?”
“Always,” Seungmin pressed his nose to yours, then wrapped his arms around you tighter.
You sat, in the front seat of your car, in the supermarket parking lot, bodies entwined.
Sure, you should be getting home, but you weren’t in a rush.
Wherever he was, he was your home.

summary: The Pevensies have decided to run a cafe together, a cafe that the reader has come to frequent every Saturday like clockwork. As time goes on, it becomes evident that a certain blond has started to catch feelings for the reader.

The family had opened the cafe two years ago. It had started as a funny what-if. A suggestion that the youngest sibling had stated aloud one day in the way we all share our unfiltered thoughts and ideas with those closest to us. The cafe was brought up again the next week by the eldest daughter after the cafe she frequented ran out of vanilla syrup for her latte. “This wouldn’t happen if we did own our own cafe,” she had said once she got home with her bitter coffee.
The next time it was brought up was by the youngest son who saw an empty building for sale. It was on the corner of one of the busiest streets in London. “That would be the best place for our cafe,” he said to his siblings as they walked by on their way home from a day out in the city. “Lots of foot traffic and far enough from other cafes that we wouldn’t have much competition.” The others nodded along in agreement as they walked by, all of their eyes lingering on the lot for a bit longer before turning their heads back to watch where they were walking.
“I bought the building,” the eldest said a week after his brother had pointed it out. “The money from my part of the inheritance was enough to cover the down payment. And if the business becomes successful, we’ll be able to cover the monthly payments.” The others nodded, as if this was to be expected. Even the eldest daughter nodded along instead of berating her brother for doing something so impulsive. Because it wasn’t impulsive. It was something that had grown on them during the past few months.
The girl had started to visit the family’s cafe a few months ago. She was new to the city and felt the need to find a cozy cafe to spend her afternoons reading in the corner with a nice cup of tea. It had been a complete accident finding the cafe. She was following her google maps in an attempt to find another cafe, one that had been established for decades and had tons of five star reviews. But her horrible sense of direction led her straight to the door of the family’s cafe, entitled The Lamppost Cafe by the youngest of them.

“It’s my pleasure,” he replied. The girl couldn’t help but quietly giggle at his response, thinking it to be a bit more formal than expected. The boy turned around to hide his blush as he walked back to the counter, his sister looking like she was prepared to say something smart. He gave her a warning look before walking to the back, away from everyone.
The girl found herself falling into a pattern of visiting The Lamppost Cafe every Saturday at exactly one in the afternoon. It wasn’t like she planned it, it just was the way things worked out. The fact that she got to see the cute guy every time might have contributed a bit to her constant returns though she never would admit it. The first few times she went, the same girl, Susan, took her order. But within a month of her visiting the cafe, the guy with the unnatural blue eyes stood at the register, always finding an excuse to work the register as soon as the clock neared one o’clock on Saturdays. The first time he did it, his sister gave him a look. The kind of look that let him know that she knew what was going on in his mind and was prepared to tease him about it later that day. It wasn’t hard for Susan to put it together between him constantly checking the girl’s usual seat and him taking longer than usual when delivering the food to the girl.
“Peter’s in love,” Susan declared to her siblings when they got home after the first time Peter took over the register for the mystery girl.
“No I’m not,” he argued, always one to avoid his emotions.
“So who’s the unlucky girl?” their brother asked.
“Wish I could say but we don’t even know her name,” Susan replied for Peter.
“How can you love someone if you don’t even know their name?” their sister asked.
“I’m not in love with her!” Peter exclaimed.
“Sure. Instead you just oggle at her the entire time she comes into the cafe. He even took my job at the register today!”
“I want to see her!” their sister exclaimed, excited to hear of a girl having such an effect on her oldest brother.
“Come in on Saturday and you can,” Susan replied, a smile growing on her face as horror grew on her brother’s.
“Suddenly all of my plans for Saturday have fallen through. I’ll be there as well.”
“That’s not necessary at all, Ed,” Peter said, feeling his face already starting to warm.
“Oh but it definitely is,” he replied, a smirk forming on his face.

You’ve always hated your birthday.
An annual reminder of your mortality is a ridiculous notion, but yours just so happens to fall on what is arguably the worst, most capitalist Hallmark holiday of them all: Valentines Day. Your husband however, loves it, using both as an excuse to spoil you; something that you had grown to tolerate over the years but nonetheless still hated the attention. This year (somehow), you had managed to get him to agree to a low-key pizza and movie night; a strict “no surprises” rule in place.
While he’s at work, you clean the apartment a little bit before running over to Melvalds to grab snacks for tonight. After tossing some blankets into the dryer, you throw on an old denim jacket hanging by the door and grab your keys.
Winter in Indiana can be brutal, but luckily this year hasn’t been too bad. It snowed a few days ago, but at this point it was almost completely melted, leaving just a few scattered slush patches around. The leather seat was freezing as you slid into your ’92 Mustang, a previous ‘birthday surprise’ that you had deemed utterly ridiculous and unnecessary, but simultaneously were completely obsessed with; your husband has his Warlock, and you have your car. The engine roars to life, blasting stale hot air as you exhale a puff of steam in the frigid interior.
The main drag of Hawkins isn’t far from your apartment, but you decide to take a detour and pass by the record store you co-owned. Hawkins is still rebuilding from the disaster of 1986, though after 11 years it was almost back to how it was. There’s still some shuttered businesses, abandoned homes, and damaged terrain, but somehow Hawkins had come back stronger. The record store was a good example, having been vacated by its previous owners, it was put up for sale during the big real estate boom in ’89, and you had snatched it up at a fraction of what it should be worth. Music was always ever-present in your life, same as your husbands (well, boyfriend at the time) so you became business partners, christening the new venture as Ace of Spades Records after his beloved Motorhead.
You creep the car through the parking lot, squinting through the front windows of the store to catch a glimpse of him. Gareth’s car was in the lot, so you know he was probably in the back showing him a new pair of drumsticks or a rare album he had found. Before you pass by completely, his fluffy hair comes into view behind the counter and you watch as he headbangs along with something he’s probably blasting at an insufferable volume. You smile to yourself as you drive past, turning onto Main Street.
All of the parking spots in front of Melvalds are full, groaning in annoyance as you’re forced to park a few blocks down by the diner. It wasn’t freezing, but you definitely don’t feel like walking outside more than you have to. As you get out of the car and lock the door, a disgusting, acrid smell overtakes you, causing your stomach to turn to the point of almost vomiting right there on Main Street. You grimace up at the diner. The old neon sign seems to mock you. Normally, this entire block smells like smokey burgers and greasy fries, so why was today suddenly different? Eager to get away from the smell, you briskly walk down towards the general store, yanking open the door to a soft bell jingling overhead. The young clerk at the front gives a courteous smile as you grab a basket and head for the candy aisle.
Reese’s Pieces are a must, practically demanded by your husband when you had suggested a movie night. Two boxes are quickly shoved into the basket first, followed by your favorite: Twizzlers. A packet of M&Ms catches your eye, a memory from years back forcing its way through the mental block you had tried so hard to put up.

May 1986
Dustin sits at the end of the hospital bed, launching M&Ms into Eddie’s mouth to see how many he could catch. Rainbow candy litters the white bedsheets, the casualties of Dustin’s shitty aim. A red M&M is catapulted up towards Eddie’s waiting mouth, bouncing off his lip and hitting you in the forehead next to him.
“Dustin—“ you hiss, shooting him a look as you pick up the chocolate and chuck it at him. Eddie grins as he picks up a stray candy from the blanket and pops it into his mouth. The look on his face is something you never want to forget; gratitude mixed with admiration. He was back from the dead, surrounded by the people he loved most in the world. The handcuff attaching him to the side of the bed a reminder that he’s not out of the woods yet, the ever present threat of murder charges looms over your heads. The sound of an M&M pinging against the linoleum floor focuses your attention back to Dustin, he’s staring in alarm at the officers that had just entered the room.
“May I please speak with Mr. Henderson, Mr. Sinclair, Mr. Wheeler, and Miss L/n.”
Eddie was exonerated that day, arguably one of the best days of his life (and yours). He was in the hospital for a week after that, you never left his side. After speaking to his Uncle Wayne and explaining to him as best you could about Eddie’s injuries, the two of you decided that it would be best to have him stay with you during his recovery. The trailer had been demolished by the ‘earthquake’, so Wayne was living in temporary housing and didn’t want to keep shuffling Eddie around in his fragile state. Your mom was hysterical when you called her from the hospital. You had put off contact in the fear of getting her involved in this entire mess, but now with the police clearing Eddie’s name, you knew it was time to come clean. The cry she let out upon hearing your voice was deafening through the little speaker on the phone, and you tried your best to keep it together on your end. Once she calmed down you carefully explained as much as you could, eventually telling her about Eddie’s ‘accident’. She was so ecstatic to have you back, she “didn’t care if she had Ted Bundy coming to stay in her house” as long as you were home.
So Eddie moved in, temporarily at least. Taking up residence in your room so you could keep an eye on him and do all of the things the nurses at Marion Memorial had explained prior to his release. He needed a lot of help, and was still bedridden for a few weeks followed by intense physical therapy. When you weren’t with him, you were working, taking a position at the Hawkins Community Center’s new Resident Displacement Department. It wasn’t a dream job, but it allowed you a steady income and flexible schedule which is all you needed right now.
Once Eddie had recovered enough, he volunteered to help, subconsciously wanting to show Hawkins that he wasn’t the monster some still believed him to be.
A few months later, you floated an idea to him while cuddled up on the verge of sleep.
“Hey, Eds—“ you whisper, looking over at his relaxed face in the dark.
He grunts in response, eyes still closed.
“Do you wanna move in together?” You brush a hand over his chest, snaking up to his neck to rest against his pulse point, a comforting habit you had formed years ago and haven’t been able to shake.
“We already live together, baby—“ he mumbles, turning to face you.
You huff out a breath, feeling his heartbeat under your palm, “I know that, but I mean like…a place of our own? Somewhere where it’s just us.”
It’s difficult to see in the darkness, but the glint of his teeth lets you know he’s smiling.
“I’d love that, but we don’t have the money right now.”
“I’ve been saving,” a whispered confession falls from your lips. You had been saving little by little each paycheck, hoping to move and get out of your mother’s hair (not that she wasn’t happy you were there).
“I have enough for the first month’s rent of an apartment downtown. I put in an application last week and it got accepted.”
Eddie props himself up on an elbow, voice becoming serious, “Are you joking?”
You shake your head, suddenly feeling nervous about his response. What if this isn’t what he wanted?
“Holy shit—babe! This is amazing!” He practically falls on top of you, attacking your face with a million kisses while you laugh and try to push him off.

Eddie was cleared to work the week you moved into your new apartment in Downtown Hawkins. Desperate to be able to help provide for you and be an equal partner, he took the first job he could get: working at the plant with Uncle Wayne.
Eddie fucking hated it.
The hours were long and he was barely home; the toll of it causing the two of you to start arguing over the most minuscule things. You’d go to Family Video to escape, Steve had been promoted to manager and didn’t mind if you hung out there anytime you wanted. You cried about your fears to him and Robin; that Eddie was pushing you away and that moving in together was a mistake. They both agreed that he was just overwhelmed, and maybe he just needed a break. On the drive home, you passed the old record store off of Main Street, windows boarded up and a large “For Sale” sign plastered to the door. The gears in your brain started to turn.
The next day you called the number on the sign, meeting with the agent to talk pricing and logistics. It was a long shot, you understood that, not wanting to get your hopes up. The real estate agent explained that due to the stories about Hawkins, no one really wanted to move here, let alone open a business. The town was practically giving these locations away for free, desperate to boost the towns economy and breathe new life into Hawkins.
A million signatures and one drained savings account later, it was yours.
That night, Eddie slammed through the front door, exhausted and frustrated. Collapsing onto the couch, you sit opposite him, heart threatening to beat out of your chest. He looks at you with the saddest, burnt out eyes, and you can see how beaten down he is. He was a shell of his former self. He didn’t laugh anymore, never sang out loud or played guitar for you; just goes to work, comes home, and sleeps. The stress was making his trauma worse as well, and there were too many nights where his terrors would wake you up; his screams and whimpers devastating as you gently tried to shake him back to reality.
You needed to bring the boisterous boy you fell in love with back.
“Can I see your hand?” You reach out an open palm to him.
He closes his eyes and pinches the bridge of his nose, “For what, sweetheart?”
You pull his hand onto your lap, “Just give me it—“
Dropping the little gold key into his hand, you let go and he stares at it with a straight face.
“I don’t need a new house key, mine is still working?” He furrows his brows in annoyance.
“It’s not a house key,” you try to contain your smile, “it’s the key to your new job.”
If you thought he was confused before, his new expression confirms it.
“I bought the old record store off Main, I figure we can reopen it and be our own bosses,” you watch as his face stays the same, eyes darting from the key in his palm, to you.
He didn’t have words; this must be some sort of dream.
He drops the key onto the coffee table and grabs your face in his calloused hands and kisses you for so long that you gasp when he pulls away.
Eddie Munson was back from the dead…again.

Before anyone can see, you toss one of the boxes into your basket, covering it with a bag of candy and rushing to the counter.

You put a finger against his mouth to stop him from rambling, standing up and removing the test from your back pocket; Eddie stares up at you in cautious anticipation.
“Give me your hand,” you whisper nervously, and he obeys silently, palm facing up as you place the white piece of plastic into his hand.
His brows furrow at he processes what he’s looking at. It hits him the second he sees the tiny pink lines, eyes going wider than you’ve ever seen them.
“Sweetheart—“ he whispers.
“Surprise…” you smile weakly, unsure of his reaction and suddenly feeling extremely self conscious. Your fight or flight response kicks in, and all you want to do is run.
Just like he had done the night you gave him the keys to the shop, he grabs your face and kisses you, only this time its gentle and solid.
“Holy shit…” he pulls away, leaning his forehead against yours as you grip his arms, “I’m gonna be a dad.”
You nod as you feel the tears start to fall, matching the ones in his eyes, “Happy Valentine’s Day.”
He smiles into another kiss, as you reach a hand up to place against his neck. His steady pulse beats back.

Chapter 2
Interlude: The Ace and the Man With the Silver Tongue
My TNTduo stuff really kicks off here.

Wilbur was not a happy man.
His father had sent him to do trade deals with Las Nevadas.
The country was loud and bright, home to the richest con-man on the server.
The receptionist looked at Wilbur with a look of disdain the he didn't think she even tried to conceal. She clicked a pen, "who are you and why are you here?" She paused, "Actually, I don't care. Go home kid."
Wilbur made and held unblinking eye contact with the receptionist, "I am Wilbur Soot, heir to the Myncraft Tech Corporation, son of Phillip Watson, and, as you may know, your sole provider of all of the technology in this building." The words dripped with malice.
He blinked, "And I am here to speak with Quackity Nevadas."

Quackity noted that his office window was very large.
This was not new information, but very difficult to not take note of. It spanned from floor to ceiling, showing him a view of /his/ empire, one he had built from the ground up and killed to protect.
The buildings glittered.
Blood dripped off of his hand onto the tiles of his office floor.

The receptionist Wilbur was speaking with hesitated, picking her words carefully, "Mr. Nevadas is on break."
Wilbur grit his teeth.
"Where?" He hissed.
The elevator dinged.
Wilbur watched as a man left the elevator. His coal-black hair covered by a navy beanie was the first sign that this was the man Wilbur was looking for.
The second sign was the way that the man immediately turned around and stepped back into the elevator, jamming the buttons frantically.
Wilbur strode over, putting his hand over the elvator doors so he could walk into it.
Quackity sighed.
Wilbur smirked at the shorter. "That scared of me, Mr. Nevadas?"
"That scared of this shitty conversation. I can already feel myself losing flirting skills by talking to you," Quackity bit back.
"Well, I don't really care, Quackity," Wilbur replied.
"That's Mr. Nevadas to you, Wilbur."
"Oh, I see. I would never disrespect you, sir" Wilbur snarked.
"Good," Quackity said.
The elevator dinged.
The doors openened to the 81st floor of Nevadas Tower.
"So," Quackity said, "Do I have to talk with you in my office or can we get this over with while we have a drink?"
Wilbur pondered, "Probably an office matter."
Quackity ignored him. "Great, we're going to the bar."
"If you take me to that fucking casino-"
"In the new Navadas Casino."

The lights were bright enough that Wilbur would not be shocked have a migrane later, but perhaps that was Quackity too, insufferable bitch.
"So," Quackity said, stirring his drink, something with vodka in it, Wilbur didn't recognize the name, "what did you need to talk to be about so badly, Wilbur?"
Wilbur glared. "I need information about Dream."
Quackity put a finger to his cheekbone, sipping his drink. "Okay, what do you need to know?"
"His real identity." Wilbur said.
"And why do you need to know that?" Quackity asked.
"He poses a threat to my company."
"And what are you willing to give me?" Quackity asked, making eye contact with Wilbur.
"The ability to have my company's products sold to your residents," Wilbur said.
"Huh. You don't need the sales to Las Nevadas?" Quackity smirked.
"Oh no, we do, but I think you need us more." Wilbur said.
"Oh, so eager to walk in dad's shoes now Will. What happened to that kid who wanted to stay with me after you ran away?" Quackity tapped his finger on the side of his glas,. "Plus, dad's shoes won't ever fit. Maybe Techno could take over, but you? Emotionally unstable, unreliable, and lazy." Quackity smiled.
People's heads were beginning to turn, eyes locked on their country's leader. Quackity stood up, walking over to a poker table."Play me?" He asked Wilbur.
Wilbur nodded, curtly.
"By the way, how'd that latest product release go?"
"Oh you mean the one you tried to sabotage?" Wilbur smirked, venom dripping from his tone, "great actually"
"I wonder what happens when daddy can't clean up your messes anymore, Wilbur," Quackity spit.
Quackity dealt the cards.
"And you'll never know," Wilbur said.
"I mean, it wouldn't be inconvenient for me to have one less market rival" Quackity said, blurring the line between sarcasm and truth.
"When dear old dad is dead, will you be able to pick up your own messes? Can you run a country? You can't run your own life, Wilbur. You're some stupid fucking kid who got lucky enough to adopted by some rich prick because he was bored."
"I am an owner of the company thay provides you all of the technology that keeps this city of yours functioning, Quackity," Wilbur spit.
"Mr. Nevadas," Quackity corrected.
He then raised his eyebrows "No, Will, you aren't. Your father is, and when he dies, It's your job to keep the company running, along with the entire country that depends upon it for their economy," he said.
"What will you do when it's you job," Quackity tilted his head, "to be your father? All I see is a melodramatic drama kid with no real future without his rich dad."
Wilbur flinched.
"Ooooh, I strike a nerve?"
Quackity watched an easy smile slip across Wilbur's face.
"Well," Wilbur dragged the tip of his finger ove the edge of his glass, "I see a sniveling man in a suit bought with new money, in a casino built with lies. I see a man that is so scared of losing his precious city full of scammers and con-men that he's willing to lose the most important connection he has to the largest company in L'manburg."
Quackity smirked, "Okay, well, orphan boy, do remember back when you used to ring my doorbell and stand on my porch, begging for somewhere to stay because you couldn't defend yourself against your foster parents? You owe me, darling," he drawled.
"No, darling, I really don't, I can protect myself well enough now. "
"What about Tommy? You protect him?" Quackity said, freezing when he saw a blankness dawn across Wilbur's face.
Wilbur saw red.
He pinned Quackity to the side of the poker table, game forgotten.
Wilbur bent down and whispered, "Quackity Nevadas, I could blow up this entire country. I could stop selling to Las Nevadas. I don't need you, Quackity. Not anymore. There was someone who did at some pont, right? What was his name? Greyson? What happened? He trusted you and then you betrayed him. You drive away everyone who loves you, Quackity Nevadas"
Quackity moved to push Wilbur.
Wilbur caged him with his arms.
"stay, darling," Wilbur said, letting his voice slip for a moment, "you will tell me who Dream is, or I will cut off your access to my company's products."
Wilbur let the shorter man go, and Quackity straightened before he downed his entire drink, "and if I don't know?"
"Then you will find out within the next week."
"Look man," Quackity said, leveling with the taller man, "i'm not even shitting you right now, I can't get that kind of intel in a week while running a country. Especially not without some motivation."
"Then you have two weeks," Wilbur said, "Or I'll blow up your cute little casino. That motivation enough?"
"Oh," Wilbur put cash on the bar beside the poker tableI want reports monthly, "I'll come down every other day to check on your progress."
The taller pulled on his trechcoat before walking out the door, leaving Quackity to watch.

Ace seemed quieter than usual, Techno noticed.
"Hey Ace, you good?" Mercury asked over the comms.
Ace was silent for a moment "I mean, not really. Job's pretty stressful right now to be honest."
Wilbur jumped over an alleyway. "Boss pushing you around again?"
"Not quite. Trying to manage alot right now. Pretty high tension situation"
Wilbur sighed behind his mask.He continued to run across the roof, "Yeah I know how that feels, man."
"It's pretty tough," Ace said, "They want me to do something really difficult right now," Ace paused, "and I could get in pretty serious trouble if I can't"
The moonlight caught Wilbur's Mercury mask as he nodded, not that Ace could see it. He had always had a soft spot for Ace, finding his jabs and jokes funny and laughing at his endless dick jokes. "Well, you could always come crash at my place and I could get you a job," Wilbur offered.
Ace was silent, replying after a pause, "I know, and thank you, Mercury, but I prefer to keep work and play seperate. Plus, I like my current job, if not my associates."
Wilbur nodded.
"Hey, Ace," Techno said "You're our best hacker."
"Okay, thank you?" Ace said, a lilt of a question in his voice.
"Do you think you could figure out Dream's civillian identity?" Techno asked.
"Okay, I'm gonna be honest, Blood God," Ace said, with a sigh, "I have no idea. I could get killed while looking into it, and It's risky. I can try, but no promises."
Techno figured that made sense. "Okay, that makes sense," he said.

4:08 AM
The lights blurred as Quackity tried to breathe, back pressed against the cold tile wall.His chest had constricted and he couldn't seem to get air to his lungs.
He was going to die.
He had to figure out Dream's identity.
Dream would kill anyone who dug too deep.
Quackity was going to die.
Wilbur was going to kill him if he didn't find out who Dream was.
Quackity was not going to see twenty-three. He had two weeks.
He was going to die.His chest was tight and his panic was crushing down on his ribcage. The lack of air slowly gathered into dark spots in his vision as the flourescent lights of his office bathroom ran in streaks down his vision.
Quackity was so tired. Greyson had trusted him. He had failed Greyson. Now he was going to fail Mercury. He was going to fail himself. He was going to get himself killed along with his entire country.
Quackity slumped back against the tile, his head hitting the wall with a hollow thud.

Quackity's fingers flew over the keyboard as he combed over private records from the Dream Team HQ. He had been in front on the computer for hours, his blue light glasses hopefully effective enough to save his vision. Villain fights, wounds suffered, all things mostly available to the public, and most heavily redacted, black bars covering important information to the point that some documents only had 20 visible words on them.
He reverse searched for any info pertaining to Dream, grinning when he came across something that seemed useful.
He knocked a monster can from the desk as he fist-pumped.
It was a number.
An IP adresss.
Quackity knew the IP adress for Dream's work phone.
His fingers danced on the keys as he poked around the coded protections on Dream's phone, searching for a loose thread or backdoor he knew had to be there.
Nothing.
This was gonna be difficult.

"Did you talk to Quackity?" Philza asked.
"Yup, he was a bitch like always," Wilbur said.
"You're just saying that because you're in love with him," Techno said.
"I am not. He is the scum of the earth. I talk about him so much because I hate him," Wilbur defended.
"Bruhhhhh...."
"It's okay mate we'll accept you even if you love Quackity," Phil teased.
"I DO NOT!" Wilbur insisted.
"Okay, mate," Phil agreed.
"I'm gonna visit him every two days to check his progress," Wilbur said.
"But you don't have a crush, no way," Techno accused.
"Shut the fuck up I hate him so much," Wilbur said.
"Okay," Techno said placatingly.
Wilbur glared, walking out of the lobby of Mycraft Enterprise.
"Hey, dad, when do we get a new Tech manager?" He called behind him.
"Oh, Monday. I think you'll like the new guy," Phil said, smiling.

AX ‘22 Con Report
I tabled at AX with my friend (no public social media) last weekend!! I’m sure most people saw tweets about how awful the artist alley conditions were lol... I’m doing this writeup mostly to reflect how sales went + for my own reference but I will also cover con organization, how it felt inside re:safety, masking, AX staff/volunteers. FYI this is very long as it’s a sort of blogging recap with lots of photos.

Day 0:
Setup day! I forget what time Kentia Hall opened for setup but we got to the convention center at like... 4:45-5PM. Getting into the loading dock (a garage directly connected to Kentia) was pretty smooth, luckily since we arrived a little late there was no wait for other cars ahead of us. A con center staff (?) driving a forklift gave us a cart to put our boxes etc. on.
We weren’t allowed to park our cars in the dock, so my table partner had to go repark her car after we wheeled our merch to the Kentia rear entrance.
Here’s what the loading dock looked like (this was from Day 4, so it’s pretty empty).
Directly to the right is Kentia Hall.
Fortunately the staff at the Kentia entrance (between the loading dock and Kentia, normally closed during convention hours) was also doing COVID checks, so we got our COVID wristbands right off the bat. Setup took the entire 3 hours until 8PM. We didn’t finish either, but we got the basics set up (photo display stand for large prints, grids for charms/small merch). We just needed to add our side hanging prints (medium and mini prints) via a clamp-on side arm.
I don’t think AC was on, so we were kinda sweaty and also tired/hungry from the 6+ hour drive down.
Here’s our original setup; we decided to move the “window” to one side so there’d be no break in our display (easier for customers to see all our merch at once). This is because we didn’t evenly split mine vs. her merch LOL. Other artists often keep their own stuff on one side if they split a table. Also we had a plexiglass screen because we were paranoid about non-maskers breathing on us. Neither of us got COVID from the con so I like to think it worked!
Day 1:
We tried to get to the con by 8:30 AM so we could get convention center parking and finish setting up before 10 AM (AA open) but there was a literal car accident + one that happened 30 feet from our car on the street leading to the parking garage 😑 My table partner had to drop me and our neighboring table (also part of our Airbnb) friend off on the street so we could walk the rest of the way inside lol.
We were both wary of customers stealing our display charms so we pinned our charms through the grids, then secured them on the back. We tugged on each charm to make sure they didn’t come loose.
Here’s Anya, my best-selling charm (or about tied with my Jack Frost charm). My memey-themed merch sold the best lol (not a surprise for me). The pin was stuck in there unless you really yanked it. Also, we used black grids because the contrast really makes the charm colors pop more (vs. white or a corkboard). We got the idea from our friend who uses black canvases.
Some more pics of my merch (and our display in the background). You can see we had a Square payments sign + NO MASK NO SERVICE sign (we forgot to print one but the sticky note was enough). We used the top of the grids to display more 3D items like omanjuu plushies (we used two-tier displays from Daiso, inspired by Hinamatsuri displays), acrylic standees (a mini wooden bench from Daiso again), and my bargain bin (old charms) box. We tabled at Fanime in May and all our stuff was directly on the table, which was low and hard to see. Added height lets people see your merch from farther away.
Personally I wish we displayed our stickers better but we kinda ran out of space. They’re not the main money makers anyways (charms and prints are) but oh well, they’re easy to ship/sell online.
And here’s what it looked like on the artists’ side:
AX volunteer staff is pretty strict about making sure the walkway is clear. Every few tables had personal trash cans, though whether they were emptied or refilled with another plastic bag was kinda dependent on luck...? Most of the time we just had our own personal trash bag we brought and disposed of after closing each day.
Luckily the volunteer assigned to our strip was SUPER friendly and nice. She stopped by our table every day starting Day 2; she reminded us to eat and stay hydrated because another artist had passed out on Day 1. I think actually more than one artist passed out in AA during the entire weekend 🙃 CO2 levels were off the charts especially on Days 2 and 3.
I didn’t get a photo of the actual back of our display, but we had organizers inside our grids so we could store handfuls of charms for quick access. In the past we’ve just hunched over and dug through our giant luggages to find charms when customers asked for them, which REALLY takes a toll on you and your back. We finally learned this year 🤡✨ You can see it jutting out in this picture. You can also see my medium/mini prints hanging (all taped) from the side arm.
We had an open box full of unorganized omanjuu plushies between our table and our neighboring table since we did a group order together. Most of the time I helped dig and grab them when customers wanted to buy them. It was kind of hard in the beginning because my table partner and I had 4 blonde characters LOL but we didn’t bother organizing them because they took up too much space and were too light (like packing peanut light) so they fell out of containers easily...
I would say the only downside of our main display setup is that one person (me) is always hidden by the grids, while the other artist is stuck doing customer service. To talk to customers, I had to stand up on my toes to talk over the grids, and it was uncomfortable because I also had to avoid our large prints that were hanging directly behind my head (when I stood up).
I think I generally had a more enjoyable time at Fanime because I was the one doing the majority of customer service, so I got to chat with customers more. AX I was mostly just... chilling... also there was no service and I couldn’t get onto the AA wifi because it was at capacity (people were sharing the password with their non-AA friends :) ).
This is also when we realized while the plexiglass kept us “safe” from people breathing on us directly, it was also REALLY HARD to hear people. Voices are already muffled with masks on, and cons are LOUD. The plexiglass was thick so we literally could not hear almost every single customer. We either had to ask them to speak up multiple times or we straight up asked them to talk over our grids so we could hear what they wanted to buy. The latter making the plexiglass useless...
It was also tougher on my partner’s back because she’s 6+ inches taller than me (and was wearing heels lol). For me I just had to stand up taller, for her she actually had to scrunch her back to dodge our prints.

Anyways Day 1 sales were slow... even compared to Fanime 1 month ago it felt pretty slow. Not a huge surprise since it’s Day 1, most people will browse AA on Friday and then make purchases later during the weekend UNLESS you’re a super popular artist and people want to get your stuff before things sell out. Unfortunately neither of us are at that level lol
Also here’s a photo of my luggage under the table. This was taken on Day 4 during takedown so it has all the manjuus poured inside LMFAO
AC was either broken or on energy-saving mode (according to some staff?) this day so it felt like A SAUNA. It was humid and stifling. I was fanning my partner and my neighbor with an empty portfolio and shikishi board to help keep them cool. I didn’t feel terrible since my house doesn’t have AC (so I’m used to it) but it was NOT comfortable. This is the day that staff at the South Priority Entrance (for vendors, exhibitors, Artist Alley) apparently had miscommunicated instructions and were confiscating coffee, drinks, snacks, food from everyone. Luckily they hadn’t checked my bag when we got in in the morning, so I had snacks (KitKats, dried apples) and bottles of tea, but we didn’t eat lunch until 4PM (table partner and I split food truck fries).
Maybe it was the hunger but these fries were so so so good lol.
Day 2
We expected to get the most sales on this day but sales were also really slow considering it was Saturday... My partner also has tabled at AX multiple times in the past, and she said sales were disappointing for her standards. We wondered if it’s because we were at the back of the hall.
I think my most popular mini print from Fanime (ACNH Timmy and Tommy going “Poggers!”) didn’t sell as well because it wasn’t directly in customers’ faces. At Fanime it was right above the seller’s “window” so while customers waited for me to grab inventory, their eyes would wander and immediately see it, then add it to their purchase. Or they’d see it front and center when they passed by the booth. This time we kept all smaller prints on the sides, so that may have impacted sales. It still sold the best out of all my prints though, but it didn’t sell out like it did at Fanime.
AA conditions-wise were better from Day 2 onwards, but it’s a fact that the AC is not strong in the back of the hall. It’s strongest at the entrance. I did fan myself during Days 2-4, Day 4 was the most pleasant because crowds were much smaller lol. Trying to get through or leave AA on Days 2-3 were a nightmare because of how jampacked the aisles were. Usually I would walk through the artist walkways just so I could avoid the crowds (at least 30% of whom were unmasked 🙃). Honestly it’s a miracle I didn’t get COVID considering how many bare faces I saw!!!!!! After attending Fanime, where it was like 99% mask policy adherence, AX crowds gave me hives... I take Norcal Bay Area masking for granted...
I think...? Because CO2 levels were so potent, I didn’t feel productive or want to draw commissions. At Fanime I took over 30 commissions across 3 days, like I was pumping them out every 20-30 minutes. At AX on Day 2 I took down my commission display and didn’t bother putting it back up until the next day because I just wasn’t in the mood. And it didn’t have anything to do with how much sleep I got (or lack thereof), I was not sleeping well during Fanime either lol. But 🤷♀️ who knows. Luckily I didn’t experience nausea, fatigue, dizziness, or headaches like other artists did. My table partner complained of headaches but she also does require more sleep than I do.
Day 3
Sales were the best on this day! By this point I realized I didn’t really draw enough popular series, but ngl I don’t care much about drawing popular things just for sales. My partner’s Luxiem/VTuber merch was selling like hotcakes.
Okay I’ll just speed through the rest lol
Day 4
I was hoping for a lot of last minute sales on this day but it was kind of slow. Overall AX this year was fairly slow for a lot of artists; I talked about it with other artists and friends who were tabling and we all agreed our sales were lower than we’d anticipated. Like we did well but it wasn’t as high as we wanted; we definitely ordered more stock than we needed to.
AA closed at 3PM, and we were hoping to finish takedown by 5PM. Unfortunately after we’d packed everything up + my partner had helped pack away some of her out of state friend’s boxes into her car... things got really disorganized and confusing.
So my friend had parked in the Venice Parking Garage which is directly across the street from Kentia Hall/the south side of the convention center. The street between the two buildings was filled with cars and PARKED trucks. So normal cars that were exiting the garage were stuck and couldn’t move. No AX staff bothered to explain to these cars that the trucks were Exhibitor’s Hall trucks, and they were parked and waiting for the corporate vendors to bring their stuff down. My friend was stuck on that street for like... 15-20 minutes I want to say. I was stuck in a pretty much empty AA at 6:30PM with way too much stuff for one person to carry. The loading dock that I mentioned earlier in the post was also blocked off.
I briefly went outside to take pics of the street outside the loading dock (the street that my friend was trying to turn onto, so that we could pack our belongings) so I could show her what the holdup was:

After I sent these pictures to my friend I ran back inside AA, noticed a forklift had kinda haphazardly discarded/dropped two rolling “carts” at the end of the aisle, and realized I was gonna have to grab one and put all our stuff on it if I wanted to move our belongings relatively quickly. These didn’t have handles, just a legit rope tied to it that you had to pull LOL
I felt kinda bad because there was an artist who had been sitting at her table for hours by herself, literally SURROUNDED by luggages. We started talking and it turns out she was confused because her boyfriend was in the same situation as my partner, stuck trying to get out of the parking garage. I told her she should grab one of the rolling carts to start loading her stuff too, since there were two that had been left a couple tables away from us. I didn’t wanna wait for a forklift because we had dinner plans lol.
Once I managed to wheel our stuff outside, I was still pretty lost on what to do, because my friend was around the corner and as versatile as the “cart” was, it could not go over curbs. Under the platform, there were two little mini wheel things on each end. They were not affixed so our stuff actually fell off when I tried to go up one curb (it was smooth but I made too sharp of a turn). Just imagine these things but more industrial looking

Another artist who was loading their car asked me if I needed help and I said I wasn’t sure since my friend was stuck on another street (literally like.... 200 feet away). They were kind enough to explain the situation, so I relayed it to my friend via Discord (basically, talk to one of the security people, explain that you’re an artist and not exhibitor’s hall vendor, and they’ll wave you through).
So yeah this was a pain in the ass and very disorganized but at least we made it to dinner on time-ish...
Now on to general sales stuff:
Neither of my partner and I sold that many large prints, which was disappointing because 1) large prints are HEAVY and a pain to carry back home, 2) usually she sells a lot of them; large prints are good money-makers because the margins on them are really good. Of my prints I expected my Tokyo Mew Mew and Ib prints to sell the best, but disappointingly I only got 1 buyer for my TMM print 😕 It’s a little disheartening because it’s a nostalgia print, I put the most effort into it, and the reboot anime is now airing... but I guess AX was a few days too early, or I didn’t have it up front and center. I ordered 25 of them, definitely ordered too many.
Meanwhile my Power and Meowy print sold the best (14-15 sales, I ordered 20 which was a good amount). Which is funny because I put the least amount of effort into it; I literally was speed-shading her shirt at 4AM on a workday because the print order deadline was that morning. It was also an “eh this sketch can be a simple large print, let’s bank on Power’s popularity for this to do well” and it did! 🙏 What is a little weird is my partner’s Makima print didn’t do as well as she expected. She said she sold a lot of them at ALA earlier this year... I noticed my mini Makima print also didn’t do that well (I got like 4 sales). I’d wonder if it’s because Makima is controversial but people were buying my Makima charm (more people got my Power charm though).
My second-best selling print was Ib (7-8 sales, ordered 20)! I got more buyers for it on Day 1 and 3 iirc. I was pleasantly surprised because like the Power and Meowy one I was literally rush-coloring parts of it the morning of the deadline. Like actually it made me late to work lol. It’s actually unfinished 🙈 but it’s okay no one knows that...
I didn’t sell any of my P4 large print but that was to be expected because it was a last minute decision to print it; it’s old.
Charm-wise my Anya and Jack Frost “I’m gonna kill you” sold the best by far. I think in general, memey merch sells really well since people think it’s funny and want to show it off to their friends. So if all else fails, make some memey merch to ensure sales ^___^..... Surprisingly, people were not buying my partner’s SpyxFamily charms though, even though we placed our SpyxFam stuff right next to each other. It’s probably because her charms were huge, like 3 inch long/wide Christmas ornament size. It’s a shame because they came out super cute and had a cool transparent effect... But yeah, a lot of people bought my Anyas or the entire family set. I had two customers ask for 3-4 Anyas in one purchase which made me o_o LOL. I think it’s because I drew Anya’s iconic smug face on one side.
A couple Dimileth people came out of the woodworks to buy my Dimitris which made me happy... also what surprised me was that NO ONE bought my Felix charm, whereas he was my most popular charm at Fanime. Really goes to show how demographics differ depending on the con. Most people bought Hilda and Hubert at AX... these are also my slightly messed up charms from a second charm order in early 2020, right at the start of the pandemic (so the manufacturer messed up on clasps and print quality was inconsistent). So I really wasn’t expecting to sell any of them lol.
Another disappointment: I don’t think I sold a single lollipop charm all weekend... and I really expected them to sell well :\ I checked in with our table neighbor and she said only her Anya lollipop was selling, the rest of them weren’t getting bought at all. We found this kind of weird since lollipop charms aren’t super common yet, so we expected they’d do better LOL.

On the flipside my partner’s candy bag charms were selling like crazy, but then again they were all Luxiem streamers so... her Gojo/Geto candy bag didn’t sell well. Probably because the ship hasn’t really come up in the anime yet.
All in all it was a pretty good weekend, I profited a bit over $1k after expenses (Airbnb, gas, parking, merch production costs, badge and table fee). This doesn’t include some tabling gear because my friend and I split (she bought the grids, the pins and their holders, the plexiglass, we borrowed a friend’s side arm thing, the display things I bought were all cheap minus the $50 main display stand).
Honestly that’s pretty low in comparison to all my artist friends who table at 3-5 cons per year, but I table really casually (this is just for fun) and I do more online shop selling, so I’m not too disappointed. I also didn’t draw any Genshin, didn’t have any SpyxFamily-heavy inventory besides a couple charms, didn’t have any VTubers, etc. etc... so I can’t complain about not making a ton of money. We were also tabled super far back, so we didn’t get nearly as much foot traffic as some other friends. HOWEVER we both avoided getting COVID so maybe our table location was a blessing. Based on an unofficial spreadsheet artists have been updating wrt symptoms and test results, there were positive clusters near the entrance (though people tested positive pretty much everywhere in the AA, including a table across from us).
To conclude, I hate LA and traveling to cons is more tiring than it’s worth personally, so I think I’m gonna stick to local conventions from now on. I am a tired introvert lol. I think Airbnb-ing with 8 people (all of us have dodged COVID miraculously) would have been more fun if I was still in college, alas I am now a few years out of school and very sleepy/prefer to keep to myself usually. I had way more fun at Fanime (I drove in every morning) and also didn’t constantly fear I was getting infected with COVID each day there... also didn’t witness a car accident every single day of the con... could relax at home and not worry about forgetting to pack something...

Being Frank 2
This post would be TOO long, so I’m breaking it up into two parts. Frank continues:
“The next project was to get timber for the floor joists. Where I got most of it for the subfloor and the joists was from the power line that was put through. The trees were cut down and left lay. I didn’t have a truck to haul these logs, but there was a 1952 Chevy two ton with the motor shot. I went to Saccos salvage and got a motor out of a Chevy that was wrecked. It fit in the truck and I used that to haul the logs to the sawmill in Palo Alto. It was twenty dollars a thousand board feet to have them sawed. I worked by myself logging. I drug the logs down and backed the truck into a ditch. I played out cables across the bed and used the tractor to winch the logs up in the bed; that was how I loaded them by myself. I had excess lumber after milling. Mike C. approached me to take down a silo and he put it up at his house. It was forty feet high. I had to take all the excess lumber and build a wooden scaffolding inside the silo. I got paid 500 dollars and I hired two guys who were tree trimmers to help. They were used to working high in the air. It took me two days to master myself to go all the way to the top of it. In those days I was afraid of heights! Everything had to go in those manholes and they’re not big! You put a round of scaffolding around every six feet. That’s how I got more seed money to build the house. I had no deadline and that was key. You can eat an elephant one bite at a time. It was a labor of love.
Now I began my hunt for other materials, wherever I could get them. After the trees from the farm, I bought a stone ranch house up on Brown Ave that was going to be demolished for Interstate 68. It was on a concrete slab and all stone exterior. I paid 100 dollars for it. All I wanted was the stone, rafters, paneling, 2x4 studding, and bathroom fixtures. I sold the windows, doors, and roof to a friend of mine who was building on Oliver Belt Rd for $100. So I got my money back on that deal. I hauled all that stone and material out here on that old truck, loading and unloading by hand. The basement of this house was studded out with the 2x4s and the paneling from that house. The bathtub was square and had two seats in it. The fireplace insert came from that house. I did have an old man, Elsy C., help me haul the stone. The stone for the planter came from Costello Construction, which was located on Valley Street, and I purchased other building material for the meat shop at the same time. The planter here, Max, laid that for me. He was a mason.
I was deer hunting over at the Gordon farm, now Hemmis, and found that big stone out front to the left. The one downstairs over the fireplace came from Cosgrove’s farm when I was plowing. There are some fossil stones on the patio that came from Wills Mountain. All the stone windowsills and lintels came from a building on Bedford street that was a tombstone company. When they were being demolished, I was able to get all the windowsills. I saved a pile of money on that! The stone slabs approaching the porch came from the parklet next to Times News when they were renovating. I bought all the cement I needed to lay the block and stone for 15 dollars from the B&O railroad damaged freight depot. Their freight agent was Tom R. One corner of the freight car got damp and I removed all the cement and cleaned the car out. When I was using the cement I had to take a window screen and put it over a 50 gallon drum. I had to screen all the cement so there wouldn’t be lumps in it.
The steel beam needed to run the entire 48 foot length of the house. Moore farm was having a sale where the current AC College is. I bought a two steel beams there that would cover the length and hauled them on the old Chevy. I also bought a stack of pine 2x10s. The beams were over the top of the truck and 5 or 10 feet out in front. I put a flag on the longer piece and hauled it on Sunday morning when there was no traffic. I put the beam on a wagon and brought it around to the back of the house with the tractor. I had pipes on the wall and slid the ends on one at a time. I worked each end over to the center and set it by myself. Next thing was to set the floor joists. I used sidecut boards on a diagonal for the subfloor. All oak! The diagonal boards add to the strength.
Over to the garage: the garage door came from a house in the Dingle where I was able to salvage many items. The structural steel supporting the roof/patio I set by myself with an old Dodge truck with a telephone pole on it. The header was steel, and came out of the B&O freight station on George Street. The other major steel beams came from the demolished Sears building that stood where the Holiday Inn parking lot now is. The next steel was 30ft long coal mine rails that came from Abe Feldstein’s salvage yard in LaVale. The corrugated metal decking that the concrete was poured on came from a B&O derailment at Swanton. Some of the same corrugated metal was used on the barn roof.

Frank: Hell no, they didn’t have anything to throw away!
The posts on the patio were originally pipes that I welded plates on the end of. The 6 inch steel beam that goes across the center was also salvage from a building. In later years when the Bowman’s addition flood program began, I salvaged some ornamental aluminum posts from a house behind Hartman’s Store. They weren’t long enough, so I cut the short ones and spliced them into the long ones. The ceiling joists for the patio were the 2x8s from the stone house I tore down on the I68 right-of-way. The patio step stringers were two pieces of timber from the B&O freight station. The two posts that are on the stairway came from the old German Brewery and the handrail, redwood, came from the farmhouse (Old George’s porch). All the rafters and ceiling joists for the house portion were salvaged from the loading dock at the B&O freight. All the plywood on the roof was from a ‘fire sale.’ The rail car overheated and the floor caught fire; the smoke damage to the plywood was severe enough that they couldn’t sell it. I paid 75 cents a sheet.
Downstairs there’s one room I didn’t finish. All the ceiling was salvaged drywall that had been damaged by forklifts at Valley Lumber. I had an Amish man swirl the ceiling down there. On the other side downstairs the ceiling was finished by tile that came out of the Woodmen of the World building, along with that maple cover over the planter. It was previously a banister at Woodmen of the World. The bedroom downstairs was finished with mismatched paneling from Valley Lumber. The interior of the closet was lined with leather-type paneling that came out of B&O.
My uncle Charles built these cabinets in the kitchen out of birch plywood. He was a finish carpenter. He also trimmed out all the oak trim doorways and baseboard in the house. The front doorway was custom built by Slim (Cecil), neighbors down the road here, and Don, from my sketch. The two birch doors, front and basement, solid core, I bought from the B&O freight claim agent Tom for 15$. The sidelights on the front door I bought from Bernie G. in Frostburg. The outside hanging light was from a yard sale for $5. It had a sidearm on it, but I figured I could adapt it to hang on a chain. The inside light there on the steps came from Westons department store.
There were many people who helped me build. We traded labor. Floyd, a carpenter, helped me frame; we traded labor. The stonework was crafted by Hayes Albert Northcraft, a WWI veteran. Elsy was the mudmixer. I was at this time working 7 days a week at the Kelly. Hayes laid all the stonework and this fireplace for $1,400 with no time in it for job completion. I had a dump truck with scaffolding I’d drive around the house and we’d throw the stone in the bed of the truck, then hoist it up on the scaffolding for him to pick out what he wanted. I was to move the scaffolding every day after he was finished. One time I missed it and he was laying the stone under the bay window. He left a divot in the stonework because I didn’t move the heavy timbers for him. That’s a forever reminder that I didn’t do my duty. Hank P., whom I worked with at the Kelly, was a part-time cement finisher. He’s the one who placed the penny in the front stoop.
Well, that was a long story. It seemed like I had all the time in the world in those days, and lots of energy. You might ask when I finally finished the house. I don’t think I ever have! In fact, this year (2016) I reclaimed the large plate glass windows from the solarium at Roy Roger’s restaurant when they tore it down and I’m using them to put a sun room on the back of the house. It’ll have a hot tub when I’m finished, and also the washer and dryer. So, you see, it remains a work in progress to this day.
My note: Frank, like my parents, was born slightly before WWII and lived in this area all his life. Members of the “Silent Generation” are getting fewer these days. I had my doubts about committing to this project, but now I’m very glad I did.

Year-End Wrap Up 2023
Thank you to literally everyone who has engaged with the work I've managed to put out despite everything. It was all carved out of me at great cost and with great love, and sharing it brings me joy and is why I keep doing it. Below are some numbers and some thoughts just to quantify things, but thanks.

Thoughts:
This is mostly for myself, because I have a hard time with things like "accomplishments" and "chronological time" and "object permanency", and because I'm always looking ahead at what I want to have done, like I'm climbing uphill, and all progress feels slow. Sometimes it's good to look back at how far you've come.
At the end of last year, I parted professional ways with my agent (lovely person though she is), so this year was already a bit new in a lot of ways.
In April, Night Is For Hunting released. It's the second Moonrise book, and was intended to be the middle in a trilogy, but the final book has since been canceled (at my request) because I realized that the third book is not within timely reach for me. Still kind of feeling the sting of that. I'm also not super happy with parts of NIFH, as I pushed through places in order to hit (an already extended) deadline. I had grand plans for sections of the book that I just didn't have time to wrangle.
That's kind of a theme for this year, is that I'm learning that being disabled does unfortunately mean that I am less able to do things on the schedule or to the intensity or degree that I wish that I could. The whole reason I went fully self-pub without my lovely agent was because I knew I couldn't have both work that at least approaches my standards and also a standardized publishing schedule. Not at this point in my life, anyway.
In July, Stars Still Fall was released. I wrote what I consider the pivotal scene in that story back in 2018, and have been obsessed with it ever since, so finishing it was accomplishing a major goal. I let myself take my time to get really indulgent with the prose in places, which I enjoyed a lot. I keep poking at it to see if there's any places I'm unhappy with, that I want to change, and so far I haven't found any. (This isn't, of course, to say that it's above criticism. I'm sure it isn't all to everyone's taste. But I'm happy.) I may update the cover at some point to change the typography for the title, because I think it could be better and do better justice to the actual art.
Looking Ahead:
Blackthorn (low-tech space western, bi4bi m/f) seems to have pulled ahead out of the primordial soup of WIPs for now and is rattling full steam ahead. I'm not going to set a due date until I'm closer to the end, but with any luck, I might manage to finish it within two years?
Other projects that are starting to solidify are A Touch of Magic (witchy single dad whose daughter casts a love spell to try to save his job), A Time For Us (completely reworked reissue of M Jules Aedin title Windows in Time featuring a modern-day person helping ghosts from the 1940s at the risk of his own happiness), and whatever I end up renaming Late Blooming (gray-ace middle school teacher finds out he's same-sex attracted shortly after his 40th birthday and a lot of things start making sense, but his crush on the uncle of one of his students is not one of those things).
