For all my homemaking/baking/cooking followers let me introduce you to the sweetest lady on YouTube who will help you achieve your traditional cooking skills dreams. Mary from Mary’s nest. If you already know her you know how great she is. She’s a woman in her 60s who teaches people how to cook good, wholesome, traditional foods for cheap. Ex: sourdough and how to can tomatoes, and how to ferment things etc…
I was so nervous to make sourdough. I’d tried and it had failed and everyone told me I needed a scale, and to just watch until it was ready without really telling me what to look for, and it was just so complicated. Not Mary. She talks you through EVERY step, and gives options depending on what your budget and skill level is like. She makes everything so easy. She teaches beginners, but she’s not condescending in any way. It feels like your grandma kindly teaching you in her kitchen. Be prepared though: she talks a lot. But I love it! Just put it on as a podcast in the background and she will teach you so much.
From her I’ve learned to make flavoured extracts, sourdough, bone broth, how to stock a pantry, what traditional foods are, how to stretch a dollar in the kitchen etc. She’s so sweet and knowledgeable and I love to hear her talk about her “sweet husband” and “sweet son”. She even introduced me to the concept of charlotte mason homeschooling in one of her videos which sent me down a rabbit hole for a few months.
So if you’re interested, check her out!

Quote
Elders say that the loss of traditional foods is almost as damaging as the loss of language. Losing food systems severs a people's relationship with the natural world, the land, the plants and the seasons. It also takes away the intergenerational skills and celebrations that revolve around food sovereignty: spreading seeds or saving them, gathering together for harvests or for feasts. Kyle Bobiwash, assistant professor in the Department of Entomology and the Indigenous scholar for the faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences at the University of Manitoba, said this is why it's so important for Indigenous people to be supported by governments and scientists as they relearn their traditions. "First Nations people have forgotten they were farmers. For a long time, we've just been survivors."

Thinking about how Tut will never be able to taste his traditional foods again, not in the form they existed in when he was alive.
To keep myself from getting too sad I HC he tries to make his own version using whatever he can get his hands on with various results.

Weston A Price Foundation
Tumblr media
This guy was a dentist in the early twentieth century who became famous for warning about the dangers of diet changes happening at the time. Young people were less sturdy than they had been, and crooked teeth in kids was becoming more common. He traveled around the world to record the phenomenon, which was being caused by the introduction of cheap processed foods, especially sugar, white flour and vegetable oils. Promotion of these was displacing traditional diets and he documented the results as they happened.

The Weston A Price Foundation www.westonaprice.org
Traditional peoples highly valued ANIMAL FATS, MEAT, EGGS, POULTRY, SEAFOOD, BROTHS and ORGAN MEATS as necessary for raising strong children. They could see the results as colonialism and marginalization forced them to adopt inferior diets. Dr. Price proved that Vitamins A, D and K2 (the Price Factor) from animal foods are necessary for healthy growth, lifelong health and strong immune systems. He found NO traditional culture which practiced a Vegan diet.
Important books on Nutrition and Traditional diets: Nutrition and Physical Degeneration by Weston A. Price; Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon and Mary G Enig Phd, You Eat What You Are by Thelma Barer-Stein Phd, Good Calories, Bad Calories, by Gary Taubes, and The Big Fat Surprise by Nina Teicholz.

Sweet Tea: the staple of nearly every Southern household.
I think this is about to be a WHOLE DANG THING. I blame this brainworm on @notherpuppet and her Bread Pudding comic. Got me all nostalgic for foods from when I was a kid at my grandparents' house.
We all know Al loves jambalaya, so I'm focusing on some other dishes!
SOUTHERN COMFORT FOOD SERIES Chicken and Waffles Peach Cobbler Hushpuppies Crab Boil Fried Catfish Shrimp and Grits (debating on this one, b/c it came out in the '50's?) Biscuits and Gravy Cornbread Gumbo
Medium: Copic markers, gel pens, colored pencil
Image Description below the cut!
[IMAGE DESCRIPTION: a 6-panel Radioapple comic
Panel 1: Lucifer crouches by the kitchen counter, watching Alastor serve up a glass of amber liquid out of a large glass beverage dispenser. Lucifer: Whatcha makin'? Alastor: It's sweet tea.
Panel 2: Lucifer frowns, standing up straighter. L: But you don't like sweets. (aside: Sus...) A: (offers Lucifer the glass) Correct. This is for the hotel lobby. Taste test this for me?
Panel 3: Lucifer downs the whole glass in one go without hesitating. "Bottoms up!" reads the background with little cartoon stars.
Panel 4: Lucifer freezes, his brain buffering. A: Does it need more sugar?
Panel 5: Lucifer looks up at him, serious as can be, with little pink bubbles and golden Satanic-cross sparkles floating around him. L: Marry me. A: (recoils, hissing) NO.
Panel 6: End! (there's a small sketch of a full glass of sweet tea with a straw.)

Health Benefits of Kefir
Introduction to Kefir and Its History A fermented beverage with a lengthy and intriguing history and benefits of kefir. It has long been used as a tonic to promote health in the Caucasus Mountains of Eastern Europe, where it is thought to have its origins. The fact that the word “kefir” comes from the Turkish word “kief,” which means “good feeling,” attests to the beverage’s reputation as a mood…

In Senegal, the national dish of thieboudienne is entwined in the country’s history and culture. It’s a rich dish of fish, rice and vegetables that literally brings people together - traditionally eaten in communal fashion around a single dish.
But the preferred species for the dish is white grouper, and the fishery has collapsed in the face of aggressive fishing by locals and foreign poaching. And there are few other fish to turn to, as overfishing has “greatly diminished” other species in Senegal, where one in six people work in the fisheries sector, according to a report from the United States Agency for International Development.
Overfishing like that which has threatened thieboudienne is seen across the planet.

HAPPY SAINT PATRICK’S DAY
AAAAH. Tradition. The wearing of the green, parades, corned beef or ham and cabbage, potatoes and Irish Harp beer. So much tradition I can hardly stand it. But it’s all good, all fun and all steeped in history, if you can remember being taught that stuff. The feast of Saint Patrick’s Day is a Christian tradition which celebrates the faith being brought to Ireland. Observed since the 17th…

Making "immortal tofu" (神仙豆腐; shen2xian1dou4fu3).
The tree of the leaves it's made from and the "tofu" itself is called "immortal" due to a legend of one village struggling through a famine, and an immortal guiding them to use a particular tree's leaves to make this "tofu" to survive. It is a traditional folk food found throughout south China.

Hi, I'm Laurie, a retired Holistic Practitioner and recovering Vegan. I'm betting there are a few others here who tried the virtuous Veggie way of life and ended beating a hasty retreat. We are not herbivores, folks, we're OMNIVORES and that's a whole different niche of the Ecosystem!! Anguishing over the taking of blood-bearing life is not a New Age thing. Our ancestors took the taking of life of their animal brothers and sisters lives very seriously. Animals were treated with respect, whether hunted or herded, and their killing was a sacred act hedged by taboos. Time for us to grow up and take responsibility for our niche as TOP PREDATOR on the planet. Kill we must -- as ALL life kills. We are not being crazed maniacs when we need a hamburger, we are enacting our place in the Chain of Life. Bearing our claws soberly we may better be able to be responsible custodians of the Planet we have over-run and nearly destroyed.
Illustration: Make your squash soup with a base of healthy Bone Broth and it will be both more nourishing and more satisfying.
