Why Democracy is Failing

Okay, let me talk about something a bit more drastic this week. Left wing politics and things along those lines - and a very central point: Democracy is failing. It is. Whether we want to see it or not. It is failing in the USA, and it is failing over here in Germany as well and several other countries. And... I am here to tell you, that this was always wanted.

Now, before I say anything else, let me recommend you the Podcast SceneOn Radio, especially the season "The Land that never has been yet", which deals centrally with democracy in the USA and how the USA never have been constructed to actually be democratic. It also deals with how these things interact with civil rights, but also all sorts of marginalizations.

See, here is the thing: Democracy had to be won from feudalism. And the thing we kinda are being kept from, is who won it and who implemented it.

The people in power were not "defeated". Yes, some people lost their heads (literally), but for the most part... democracy was not won. It was put in place by those people in power, who realized that the chance would be coming, whether they wanted it or not. So, they "relented" by being the one to offer democracy - but under the terms and conditions that were in their favor. Or to put it blatantly: They created a democratic system, which helped them still holding power over more people.

It is no accident that a lot of the early democracies either gave voting rights exclusively to the people owning land - or gave them otherwise more power. With people having to fight to get voting rights for everyone. It is no accident that voting rights for women and marginalized groups had to be fought for differently - and still are often taken away.

And what we see right now is just an effect of that. Even right now people of the owning class hold more influence. You will find that in basically all governments around a large chunk of the government itself is filled with people of the upper classes. Important politicians are from rich families, often from "old money". Folks of the "but what could a banana cost? 100 dollars?!" variety, basically. It is just much harder for people from other classes to make it in politics. Because getting oneself involved in politics takes both time and energy, things not readily available if you have to work 40+ hours in a normal job, while also taking care of your family.

Meanwhile politicians and also the parties are depedent on money. Both to advertise themselves, but also just to keep the lights on. And that money comes mostly from big companies, who know very well how to get around those regulations on how much they are allowed to give to politics and such. And of course this money is given with some strings in place. They want favorable regulations for their company or their industry.

Democracy cannot work like that. This is no "rule of the people", it is the rule of the rich. It is a plutocracy. And it was always meant to be that.

Could it be worse? Sure.

But... I mean, just in Germany. Most people are for the end of coal, but the government ignores them. Most people are for speed limits on our highways. But they are ignored. Most people support queer rights. Most people are for the expansion of worker rights - and guess who gets ignored. Heck, even most people are at least neutral, if not outright favorable towards immigration, but...

The main difference between this comm sheet and my previous one is updating the prices, simplifying my finishing process, and to showcase more of what I can do with my art!!

Got the norm base prices - 20$ headshot, 25$ halfbody, 30$fullbody

Finishing is my term for shading, as I have two shading methods, and a wiggly-line style of art!

Examples below of Style 1 (smooth) 2 (pixel) and 3 (wiggle)

And I do offer discounts for symmetrical works! I didn't write it on my sheet but its usually 5 bucks, whatever makes the number look good.

Now for the 4 featured things -

Yes, I do have an 18 + account, i'm not linking it here but it shouldn't be too hard to search for my 2nd account on this blog

I'm also happy doing taur designs! I can even make them of usual non-taur creatures!

Nonfurry designs are cool too as you can see by my monster girls, here's a human though for good measure (her name is Sam)

And animations!!! I can do smooth Live2d Animations and also frame by frame animations!! Double the price of the usual commission for what it'll cost, so 40 for headshots, 50 for halfbodies, and 60 for full!

I usually give updates for 1-2 sketch phases, a color phase, and then the finished piece. Once I send you one update, I'll wait for your approval before moving onto the next phase. During these updates, any requested changes should coincide with the stage of the artwork (Posing during sketching, color changes during colors, etc.). Please don't have any fear however if you do need to make a last minute change, just keep it reasonable please. I usually add filters onto my art, I'll be more than happy to send unfiltered alternate versions upon request. Feel free to also personally request different filtered looks (Making the piece pastel, adding a static filter, giving the piece a pride flag overlay, etc.) I'm always happy to experiment. When commissioning an animation, please let me know whether you'd like a smoothly made animation using Live2D or a frame-swap animation. Violet brushed the mascara through her lashes, plumping them up and adding length. It was incredible how lashes change a person. Her mood was instantly brightened when she saw the person staring back at her in the mirror. This morning she had woken up rather foul. She was supposed to be shopping with Madeline, not that she wanted to really go but it had to be done. She just couldn’t be arsed for the high-pitched tone and the ‘we can get to know each other better’ chat as if they were close. Although the shopping part cheered her up somewhat. Perhaps Madeline would treat her to something. What’s the point in having a rich stepmother if they aren’t going to splash their cash on you.

Violet put down her Dior mascara, something that cost her nearly $40. It was a total upgrade to the makeup she used to steal from the dollar store, hiding it down her bra and sneaking out. In fact, she could do with a new one, this one was getting all dried out and clumpy. She finished with a touch of powder and spritzed her face before she heard a knock to the door.

“Come in” she called, staring once more in the mirror to check herself out. The door squeaked open, and she glanced over, seeing her father in the doorway. He was dressed for work, wearing a smart jacket with a turtleneck jumper underneath and smart trousers along with his Dior shoes. The two had taste. Violet didn’t say much and continued to look in the mirror, brushing through her hair with her fingers and touching up a few pieces.

“Morning” he said brightly as he walked into her room, closing the door behind him but not fully.

“Hey” she murmured, clearly more interested in herself.

“I’m off to work now, was just seeing if you were ready” he asked and Violet scoffed, beginning to put her makeup away.

“Ready as I’ll ever be” she whined, and Max sighed.

“Give her a chance, you might really like her” he shrugged, and Violet couldn’t help but laugh.

“Sure…” she dragged out the word through her lips and rolled her eyes.

“You haven’t even spent any time with her; besides she’s looking forward to it” Max smirked and padded softly towards Violet, reaching up and giving a warm caress to the back of her head.

“And I know how much you like shopping” he chuckled, and Violet couldn’t help the smile appear on her lips.

“Maybe” she shrugged, pretending she wasn’t that interested when in fact it was the way to her heart.

“Just give her a chance, I told you she’s not trying to be your stepmother… and she’s not a wicked witch” he scolded at the end and Violet looked up, eyes slightly wide and tense but soon relaxed.

“Alright I will” she huffed and Max grinned. He leaned down, kissing her temple softly, his hand stroking the back of her head.

“I’ll see you later sweetie” he whispered before trailing out the room to head to work. Violet felt her body warm to his touch and a sweet smile and blush appear on her face.

“Bye daddy” she said just as he reached the door and he turned, a smile reaching his eyes.

Violet sighed heavily and looked once more in the mirror.

“Let’s get this over with” she murmured.

Madeline was way over dressed compared to Violet. She was in a pair of long cream trousers with a blazer and blouse underneath and heels whereas Violet was in a cropped tee and jeans, her Nikes, and a jacket. They sat awkwardly in the back of the car, being driven to the mall. The driver was a classic, dressed in a suit like some servant. The seats were a smooth leather and Violet felt herself almost slipping off them. Madeline kept trying to think of things to say but every time she went to speak, she shut her mouth and stared out the window. She felt almost embarrassed to be scared of a woman in her twenties. She was a businesswoman for Christ sakes who had shouted a many people including people Violet’s age and yet she couldn’t have a normal conversation.

The driver pulled up to the mall, just outside and Madeline gathered her bag.

“Thank you, Jeffrey,” of course his name is Jeffrey, Violet thought to herself, and she murmured a quick thanks before hopping out the car, following Madeline into the mall. There was every kind of designer shop from Chanel to Burberry, every makeup brand, shoes, perfume. It was like being a kid in a candy store and Violet had to hold back the urge of walking into every store and picking all the things she wanted. There was a beautiful Chanel handbag waving at her from the window, just calling her name but she walked past it like she hadn’t even seen it.

“Okay, we’re do you think we should go first?” Madeline first spoke, hitching her bag on her elbow and Violet resisted the urge not to roll her eyes.

“Um, I don’t mind, where do you normally shop” she asked, folding her arms.

“Oh well this is from Prada, how about we try there, I’m hoping they have some nice dresses” she smiled, and they trotted their way over to Prada. Madeline rustled through the clothes, searching for a black dress to wear for the function she had coming up whilst Violet mooched around, her fingers trickling down the soft silks and satins, glancing over at the handbag section but turning away as her addiction would kick in. This was the time she needed to be ‘getting to know’ Madeline, not fuelling her own addiction.

“That’s nice” she piped up behind Madeline, almost scaring her as she pulled out a black dress with long sleeves. The hem of the dress had fluffy feathers and looked very sophisticated. In fact, it was quite nice, something Violet could use for the bar when picking her easy victims. Madeline pulled it out, holding it to her body and looked to Violet again, raising her brows.

“You think so?” she asked, and Violet nodded, smiling a little.

“Yeah, that would suit your hair” Madeline was quite surprised, and she suddenly got excited.

“I think I’ll go try it on” she trotted over to the dressing rooms, politely asking to try it on. Violet wandered around, noticing a pair of sunglasses she liked with bands and dark lenses. She tried them on, peaking in the mirror. she imagined herself on the beach wearing these, in her bikini, bathing in the sun. She ripped the off to look at the price. Her eyes didn’t even widen at the number staring back and she made a note of them to come back to later. Perhaps a little present to herself after all this is over.

Madeline came out the dressing room, twirling the dress to show Violet.

“What do you think?” she asked.

“I like it, it’s very formal but the hem is nice, I think a size smaller would better suit you though” Violet stormed over to the hangers, picking a smaller size and handed it to Madeline who rushed back in to try it on. The second dress fitted better, hugging her figure, and showing more of her leg. Madeline was pleased and couldn’t help the grin on her face.

“I think that’s the one, the sleeves just look so good on you and the neckline as well” Violet described.

“You think?” Madeline asked and Violet nodded, furrowing her brows.

“Absolutely”.

“Wow, thank you, I’ll get this one then” Madeline excitedly ran back into the dressing room to change and went to the till to ring it up. The dress itself was $800 and she whipped out her black credit card, swiping it on the card machine. Violet almost salivated at the sight of the sight of it, with its raised bumps of the numbers in silver, the sleekness of the black. It was everything she wanted. The bag hung on Madeline’s elbow as she strutted out.

“Okay I need some new makeup now to go with this dress, let’s head to Dior, they have some amazing things in there” she said, leading Violet to the Dior store. The store was like heaven to her. The makeup was just screaming for her to come and buy them. Madeline was busy chatting to one of the salesclerks, discussing some new powder they had whilst Violet looked at the mascaras. They had just the one she wanted. Plus, some other goodies as well. A lipstick that looked sassy and a foundation she had been wanting to try for a while. But she wasn’t here to play the rich girl act. Playing the poor girls was becoming boring and oh how she wanted to just take all these products to the till and shove them in her makeup bag. But looks like she had to wait.

“See anything you like?” Madeline came behind her, almost scaring Violet and she jumped slightly.

“Oh, I was just looking at this mascara, I really need a new one but… $40” she laughed, and Madeline smiled softly.

“Get it… my treat” she snatched the mascara out of Violet’s hand, popping it in the small basket she had with her own products and Violet froze for a minute. She hadn’t expected that, but she wasn’t going to complain.

“Are you sure?” she asked, knowing she wasn’t going to back down on the offer.

“Well, you found me the perfect dress in seconds, anything else you want to try, that lipstick would look so nice on you” she pointed to the one in Violet’s hand. This could get dangerous. Violet felt the giddiness inside as she watched the makeup being rung up at the till, her items placed in a separate bag. Even the bag made her excited.

“Thank you, have a nice day” Madeline said, grabbing her own bag and they excited the store. They were getting peckish and decided to stop for some lunch. Madeline ordered a salad whilst Violet ordered a burger and chips. Her stomach was rumbling so loudly that she practically scoffed her meal.

“Thank you for the makeup, you didn’t need to treat me” she said, and Madeline shrugged.

“Well, it’s rare I get to shop for girls, your father doesn’t have much knowledge on this sort of stuff and Violet laughed, this time it being real. She had to agree there. Max didn’t have a clue about any of this stuff.

“You know so much about fashion, I would never have looked at the dress and thought it would suit me or go for a smaller size” Madeline asked.

“Well fashion was something I always loved growing up. I wanted to become a fashion designer and at school I loved textiles. I did loads of research into how they’re made and the designed behind it. I always loved drawing as well when I was young and constantly designing my own clothes. But with my epilepsy things got in the way and I never had a chance to really pursue that dream” Violet said almost sadly, chomping on a chip and Madeline frowned.

“Well, there is still time, never give up on your dreams” Madeline urged, and Violet scoffed.

“Not if you don’t have money… I’m kinda between work at the minute, trying to find something but with my apartment out of use as well…”.

“Your father said… well you’re welcome to stay as long as you need” Madeline smiled, and Violet did the same. Perfect, just how she wanted things to go. And today wasn’t all that bad. At least she got some expensive makeup out of her.

“Thanks… Madeline”.

Sprinkles: Bark! Bark! (Alright, going back to the pixel art of the participants or characters of Inanimate Insanity, which has just completed 13 years of existence on YouTube since 2011. By the way, congratulations to Inanimate Insanity, which is still alive and determined to return for the second season along with the series BFDI, now talking about the supporting character or extra in the series, we have the Mecintosh which is like a smaller computer, and this type of object already exists in real life, which is called Macintosh, which was produced in 1984, very old, one of the oldest and one of the first types of computers of all time, completing 40 years this exact year on January 24th, about the mecintosh, the only things he did was warn suitcase that she is stealing, simulating tic tac that she is wasting time with this and just observing that. )

(And after the Mecintosh summary, I abused the Macintosh a little by putting the CD with low-end games to test and there were classic games, I won, lost, lost, won, because it was me against the system that in tic-tac-toe I picked it up and ended up beating the system! I had seen this type of computer on the internet that cost around 500 dollars, I thought it was so expensive, as it was very nostalgic for those who used this type of computer from that time, and you can understand why. !)

(( reposting my commission info, since once again I’m ahead of schedule on my current deadlines and am able to take on some extra work! It was worth it to post these last time, since I got to work on some really cool stuff.

I do both animation, and illustration.

In the past I was doing small gif commissions in monochrome color schemes, like the ones displayed here on my website

prices vary! I’m flexible, and able to work with a concept. In its simplest form, as in a few looping drawings of a somewhat complex design in gif form, I’d charge anywhere from 30 to 40. Here’s an example of a 35 dollar piece that has a flat perspective and several looping drawings.

But I also do full illustrated works!

Here’s a few of my favorite examples

Full rendered illustrations like the ones above that feature a full character and a complex background start at 70 and go up from there.

I also have the ability to do simpler waist-up character portraits like this that either have very simple backgrounds or no backgrounds at all that start at 30.

This piece below (with the chandelier) which has complicated prop design and complicated full body perspective but lacks a background otherwise would cost around 45.

But I can’t read minds! Talk to me and let me know what you’re thinking. I’m really good at concepting and will provide a bunch of little thumbnails if you need help articulating a vision.

Opportunity Cost & AI

[An off-the-cuff essay no one asked for but I word-vomited anyway because I am exhausted]

I literally started a Python coding course on Friday so that I can ask ChatGPT or other AI tools to write me scripts to execute basic, tedious tasks that currently take up an absurd amount of my time.

I work a highly-paid role that’s supposed to be very strategic, but I’m easily spending 40-60% of my time executing repetitive, tactical tasks across multiple, disparate systems because my company (and every company prior—it’s not unique to this place) won’t pay for productivity software, automation plug-ins for our project management software, actual project managers, or additional junior headcount, our third-party agency partners don't have access to work inside internal systems, etc. etc. etc.

If you take just my salary and calculate the opportunity cost there, it more than justifies the cost of at least one or two these tools—then multiply that by all of the other employees in the company with the same or similar barriers to actual productivity and it’s literally a no-brainer.

opportunity cost (noun) • the loss of potential gain from other alternatives when one alternative is chosen; can be implicit (intangible) or explicit (tangible, dollar amounts); often calculated as the difference between the return on investment (ROI) between the most profitable business decision and the current/chosen one.

Alas, almost every company I’ve been at or heard about from others is short-sighted when it comes to realizing opportunity cost—whether from the ROI on investments like software, ongoing training, professional development, employee satisfaction and retention, systems maintenance and technological upgrades, user experience, or bare minimum marketing strategies—because they “cost money.”

I’ve never understood this, because humans have an inherent loss-aversion cognitive bias—psychologically, we’re twice as motivated by avoiding potential loss than we are by pursuing potential gain, and we’re more likely to take risks to prevent loss. I suppose the problem is that the culture of busywork is so ingrained that it’s perceived as the baseline, where “increased” productivity is viewed as a potential gain, rather than decreased productivity as a major loss.

Hasn’t anyone ever heard of short-term pain for long-term gain?

So, please hit me up if you have ideas on how to leverage ChatGPT and other tools to do things like batch cloning Jira tickets and generating documentation from templates; managing an overflowing email inbox; logging system data into disparate, static spreadsheets instead of intelligent, connected systems; manually searching old Jira tickets to append implementation dates to that data; finding and replacing duplicative instances of copy that aren’t using global elements/a single database source for management; pulling, consolidating, and analyzing reports from multiple disconnected systems; etc.

I’m really, really tired of spending my time and energy on easily automated work that does not challenge me or contribute to my sense of pride or satisfaction in my work, but does radically waste my time and my employer’s money.

Let’s help each other automate some shit and work smarter, not harder. It’s 2023 and we have not made all of these technological advancements just to ignore them and perpetuate the arbitrary 40-hour work week.

If we can spend half the time or less to reach our goals at work, then we can actually focus on the strategic parts of our roles to move the needle and invest more time in ourselves. We have the tools to be able to spend more of our time on personal passions and pursuits, family and friends, travel, leisure, hobbies, community engagement, volunteering, political activism, exercise and health, financial planning and management, home improvement, or whatever is currently being neglected or would improve our quality of life, happiness, and in return, our contributions to our workplaces.

Automation is the future. Contrary to much of the fear-mongering around the topic of work automation, four out of five knowledge workers see it as a chance to rethink work in new and exciting ways. Sixty-nine percent believe work automation will give them back time to perform their primary job duties better. It’s literally a win-win—except, perhaps, for the politicians and systems of power that seek to limit our financial flexibility, ability to organize, and the security to push for change.

Nelson Peltz... Some big-time guy trying to shake things up with the Disney board...

I think he's bad news...

You may know that I'm not the biggest fan of long-time Disney CEO Bob Iger, but Peltz? Some "activist investor" who complains about current Disney movies being too "woke"?

Singling out BLACK PANTHER in particular? The two Wakanda-set movies that made a combined $2 billion at the worldwide box office? The character, portrayed by the late Chadwick Boseman, and his associates showing up in billion dollar smashes like CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR and ENDGAME? And you just know he name-checked THE MARVELS because it stars three women, only one of which being white.

Not to mention being buddy-buddies with Ike Perlmutter, former Marvel CEO, notorious corner-cutter and one of those execs who gave Marvel Studios such a hard time on several of their movies... And wouldn't greenlight the first BLACK PANTHER and CAPTAIN MARVEL... Need I dredge up stuff that that guy said in emails leaked during the 2014 Sony hack?

Peltz has been compared, aptly, to Saul Steinberg, the corporate raider who tried to do a hostile takeover of the Disney enterprise in 1984. Even Walt's descendants would rather have Iger, who they often criticize, than a dingus like Peltz or someone similar.

I won't sugarcoat it. Iger's made plenty of mistakes, and I feel his Disney is too much of a well-oiled machine making safe stuff. Dependable brands, remakes of old favorites, filmmakers not really being able to make what they want there, not enough real innovation going on... Not enough trying to "do the impossible", as Walt would say.

But I'll take that over these dweebs who honk "woke" like a defective goose. If it were up to them, every new Disney movie would be some corny DAVY CROCKETT, KING OF THE WILD FRONTIER thing. They'd become a big budget Daily Wire. That's the LAST thing I want to happen to Disney.

Funny how some 40 years later, there's this kind of mayhem at the Mouse House. A once successful CEO's strategy falling apart at the seams, and a bunch of fools answering the problem with utter nonsense. It'd be like a leak in a dam happening, and your solution being "ban Taco Bell" or something. Just gibberish that has ZILCH to do with the situation at hand.

I went over this before, but "wokeness" isn't why a lot of Disney's recent triple-digit-million behemoths aren't recouping their astronomical costs at the box office. We literally had a freakin' Barbie movie w/ an incredibly diverse cast and a loud-and-proud feminist message make nearly a billion and a half last year. Disney's own AVATAR sequel fits all the bills of being a "woke" movie, and it made nearly two and a half billion (!!!), like... These people don't live in reality, or they cater to people who don't because hey, engagement. Ya know? Disney's POOR THINGS, feminist AF and very off-putting for a lot of people, tripled its budget. I mean, that's just the tip of the iceberg. Several other Disney movies that scare these thin-skinned weirdos made plenty of coin or at least covered their costs: Many recent STAR WARS movies, some of the Marvel movies, the FROZEN movies, etc.

Like, miss me with the "well if they weren't so woke" shit. If something like THE MARVELS or INDIANA JONES 5 failed, it had nothing to do with WHO was in it. Anyways, let this episode end already.

Ethereum is currently experiencing a significant slump, with a 40% decline in value over the past year, comparable to other major cryptocurrencies. Some analysts believe the low price presents a promising buying opportunity for investors who have been waiting for the right moment to invest in cryptocurrencies. The coin may also appeal to existing investors who bought at a high price and would benefit from dollar-cost averaging.

NavC (NavC Token)

NavC is an ERC-20 utility token designed to serve as the native cryptocurrency of the NavExM trading ecosystem. NavExM is a positive cash back centralised cryptocurrency exchange that provides trading and investing in crypto, NFT, and stablecoins.

The primary aim of the project is to reduce the transaction fee and offer positive cash back for every trade at the NavExM exchange. Although analysts disagree on whether this drop constituted a true “de-pegging” from the dollar, it caused a sell-off as investors rushed to purchase bitcoin and other coins now available at a significant discount.

Decentraland (MANA)

Decentraland is an Ethereum-based virtual reality game that employs the MANA token as its in-game currency. Users can purchase various products and services, buy land, interact with other players, and create and monetize their own content. Currently, MANA is priced at $0.5955, which is 108% higher than its 52-week low of $0.2859, but 79% lower than its 52-week high of $3.40.

MANA is the second-largest gaming coin in terms of market capitalization, despite competition from other virtual worlds like The Sandbox and ApeCoin. While land parcels in Decentraland can be quite expensive, starting at 3.5 ethereum or around $5,492 at current prices, users have the advantage of owning digital assets created in the metaverse, which can be converted to cryptocurrencies other than MANA.

Decentraland has gained some credibility with the launch of M Social, the first metaverse hotel by a hospitality company, on the platform in May 2022. Additionally, Decentraland has partnered with the upcoming film “The Infinite Machine” and its NFT collection, which will be incorporated into the metaverse. Grey Goose has also recreated its VIP Suite on Decentraland and plans to establish a VIP Lounge, according to Forbes.

Algorand(ALGO)

Algorand, a blockchain platform developed by computer scientist Silvio Micali, has emerged as a competitor to Ethereum. It has gained adoption from numerous businesses, including the administrations of El Salvador and the Marshall Islands and the International Federation of Association Football.

To further extend its leadership across various blockchain sectors, Algorand has appointed Matthew Commons as its first Chief Finance Officer. He brings over 20 years of experience building and leading blockchain businesses to the position. One of his primary goals will be to collaborate with the leadership team to identify growth areas and establish financial plans to pursue them.

Algorand’s “proof-of-stake” algorithm is one of its most notable advantages, offering a high level of security and scalability while consuming less energy than Bitcoin and other platforms. Is online activism better?

Online activism, usually referred to as digital activism, is a type of activism that relies on the Internet and digital media to mobilise people and take political action. Given its ability to instantly reach large audiences across borders, the Internet was embraced by online activists as a tool for information delivery. Email campaigns and social media activism are two examples of digital activism.

We will first talk about the advantages of online activism. Firstly, online activism is inexpensive and cost effective in which it makes it possible for people and organization with limited financial means to run a global digital campaign almost for free. Online activism can be held on websites or on social media.

Secondly, it is believed that the Internet represents globalisation and enables local initiatives to be viewed on a larger scale. It enables information to be quickly shared with a big audience. The transformative effects of the internet on society are being shown by online activism. There are numerous examples of successful online petitions. Significant discussion and awareness are sparked by it. If social media campaigns go viral, it is a very effective way to raise money, as many successful viral campaigns can attest to.

For instance, the ALS ice bucket challenge, which aims to increase awareness of the disease ALS amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is one of the movements and trends that have become part of the national and international debate on the internet. The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has quickly gone from a fundraising campaign to a viral Internet sensation, raising up to 115 million dollars (Trejos 2017). Not only that, but the Black Lives Matter movement also started as an online community. Thanks to the hashtag and social media platforms, the online community was able to organise, mobilise, and increase its visibility. Ultimately, it developed into an organisation with more than 40 chapters that supports black lives.

However, online activism can be misleading. Without fully grasping the issues at hand, many people share stories about a subject, which frequently results in the propagation of false information. Additionally, fake accounts lurk on social media, and some of these profiles have fake donation sites, defrauding money from those who are trying to do good deeds and diverting attention from a problem to unreliable answers.

To conclude, I think online activism is better and more efficient. Digital activism has transformed the way events, protests and movements are organised, helping to mobilise supporters and raise awareness of a diverse range of causes.

Need For Speed

Formula One is the highest class of international racing for open-wheel single-seater formula racing cars sanctioned by the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA). Since its inception in 1950, the tournament has been considered as the pinnacle of motorsport. The popularity of the sport has increased multi-fold ever since its acquisition by the Liberty Media Group, who incorporated modern technologies into the presentation and promotion of the sport, like the docuseries “Drive to Survive” on Netflix, data insights provided by Amazon Web Services (AWS) and its robust presence on social media platforms. The sport enjoyed over 1.55 billion cumulative viewers in 2021, with over 108 million people tuning in for the spectacular finale to the 2021 season, both being record numbers for racing events.

The structure of the tournament is such that a race is held in 22 different locations every year, with an equal number of points being distributed in every race, regardless of the fame or prestige of the track, or the stage of the tournament. The driver and constructor (team) with the highest number of points spread across the year are declared as the winners, which makes F1 a sport which rewards consistency. The revenues from each race are distributed in a pre - determined ratio between the tournament, teams and the circuit on which the race is being held.

A circuit is allowed to host a Formula 1 race when a race promoter (usually the home government of the circuit) pays a ‘race fee’ to Liberty Media at an accelerated rate over a long-term contract. The average race fee for a track this year is USD 30 million, and over 10 years this fee would escalate gradually to USD 40 million. When maintenance and organising costs are added to this figure, a 10-year contract would cost any country or promoter over USD 600 million for that time period. Hence, it is no surprise that many circuits struggle to make profits and even run sizeable losses each year (for example, the Australian Grand Prix, conducted in Melbourne). However, governments continue to sponsor these events because of the millions of dollars of indirect revenue they bring in the form of tourism and publicity. The Red Bull Ring, promoted by Red Bull (which also owns two Formula 1 teams: Red Bull Racing and Scuderia Alpha Tauri) is used for the company’s marketing in its home country of Austria.

Task at Hand:

The CEO of the Formula One Group, Stefano Domenicali, has placed a greater emphasis and focus on making the sport a grander spectacle to watch. F1, along with the FIA, have hence proposed a structure whereby the season finale in 2026 will take place at a track which is not present on the 2022 and 2023 race calendars, and such a race would offer double the points that a normal race weekend would. Such a race would draw global attention like no other, and is a great opportunity for fan festivals and other promotional and cultural events to further the image of the host country worldwide (as is the case with the Monaco Gala during the Monaco Grand Prix weekend). However, the race fees would also be considerably higher for this race weekend. It is proposed that the best solution to this problem is having the local government promoting the race in association with an existing Formula 1 team, which would acquire the title rights for the circuit (as in the case of the Red Bull Ring).

*chuckles* You remembered. Good because I forgot.

Okay, Anon, I don’t blame you for being curious about the Ashley Gang. They’re a Florida legend in their own right.

The gang’s boss, John Ashley, was known as the Swamp Bandit and the King of the Everglades.

He was a bootlegger, bank robber, and even a pirate!

He escaped prison after murdering a Seminole trapper named Desoto Tiger, and they say the cop he escaped from was the son of the sheriff who Ashley would have a 13 year feud with and eventually die from.

He, his brothers, family, and some others formed the Ashley gang, and they ran rampant in Florida from 1915-1924.

When they first formed the gang in 1915, Ashley was accidentally shot by a mobster he was working with during the getaway. Ashley was shot in the jaw, and it cost him the sight in one of his eyes.

When he went to get medical attention for his eye, he got arrested and awaited trial for the robbery. He pleaded guilty and got 17 years in prison.

He broke out of prison two years later after acting like a model prisoner.

The gang’s known for stealing a million dollars from about 40 different banks.

And to put this in perspective, a million dollars in 1920 is almost $15 million dollars now.

Not only that, but his gang also hijacked numerous shipments of smuggled whisky traveling between Florida and the Bahamas.

His gang basically stopped rum-running in Florida as long his crew was active.

John Ashley was killed by the police in a shootout when he was 36 years old.

Only $32,000 of their loot was ever recovered thanks to an ex-gang member.

There’s a legend that the Everglades hide a lot of various stashes from the gang that have never been found.

Okay, for all of you who don't feel like watching Miles RP as David

Here are some of my favorite quotes. Context may be added if I feel like it. Reactions are my goblin brain screaming. All of these came from a discord so if they don't make sense . . . see goblin brain comment.

In roughly chronological order:

David: "Teachers are sort of like camp counselors during the rest of the year."

The thing is David is absolutely up his own ass enough to think this.

David: "Trail mix is expensive!"

^ said to show he understands why not everyone can donate to the charity for teachers. Very adorable, am crying.

David's "ooooh" seeing one dude was extremely non-heterosexual. Fucking bicon. Him losing his mind that one of the arenas is called "Survey camp"

David: "A person's hitting me -- I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry this is just pretend!"

This is just canonically how David plays video games. Either this or he's unwilling to commit violence at all, but I'll defer to Miles.

David: "That's very goat of you!"

Spencer: "Is David popular amongst his campers?"

David: "I like to think so! There's only 3 staff members, so I'm definitely in everyone's top 3."

"That also means you're in the bottom 3."

David: "Well, I choose not to think of it that way."

(I have to keep adding reacts so you can tell when one quote ends and another begins. Judge not lest ye be judged)

I think the other person in the stream is named Spencer. Friend of Miles. I know literally nothing else about him and am not even confident on those facts.

Every time he says something so non-David in his David voice I die: "I have a lot of grenades!"

David: "Oh my goodness, would you look at this beautiful scenery! Can we hike that mountain?"

This is so goddamn cute. I am dying. Miles looked at his fans and said "they will eat tonight" and I am so relieved.

David: "Not to be a couple of Greedy Garys, but I say we get this [care package] and then I'll drop another one!"

The fact that Miles is grinning like a lunatic the entire time is very good. (Also if this is formatted badly then I'm sorry but not all that sorry. I'm doing my best and David would be proud of me.)

David: "Didja getim? Didja getim? didja getim? How 'bout now?"

Spencer: "I didn't get 'em."

David: "Well, you tried your best and that's all that matters."

He calls healing "a little health kiss." I'm not sure why but it's very important to me.

David: [while jumping to murder someone] "Hi! Scuse me!"

(i just need something to separate the quotes okay)

David: "Well you know what gang, we did our best. You don't always win the 3-legged race. You did a wonderful job!"

Then there's a bit where they talk about Spencer's time at summer camp:

David: "ooooh hand-holding's pretty serious!"

David is too pure.

David: [dreamily] "Did you fall in love, Spencer? A summer love?" [puts hands up to his face]

Then there's the fact that David/Miles gets to pick where they play each round, and he keeps insisting on going to the one called "Survey Camp" every single time because it has the word "camp" in it.

David: "Now, I don't like to disagree, but . . . I was thinking we could go . . . to Survey Camp!"

Spencer reminds him that technically since David's the one with the power to choose, his opinion is the only one that matters:

David: "Everyone's opinion matters. And my opinion is we're going to camp."

David just steamrolling over Spencer's interests is very good. There are these little selfish nuggets sprinkled in among the wholesomeness that really capture the full David experience.

David: "Well, he's climbing up . . . he's coming my direction . . . oh, he looks scary . . ."

Spencer: "Is he coming towards me?"

David: "Oooh, I don't know. I'm dead!"

The positivity is relentless. I think Miles said on twitter afterwards that this whole thing was exhausting and I can see why. Being David is no picnic . . .

David: "I have a question: do we have to shoot each other in this game?"

And then a few seconds later:

David: "I'm just wondering if maybe there's a way we can, you know, help others. Talk through our issues."

And a few seconds after that:

David: "I was asking if they wanted to be friends in the game!"

I believe that moved killed him, too. Precious.

Also we're interrupting the real Miles!David content to share something my friend suggested to me while I was watching this and giving her quotes; she said that maybe David just calls everything camp to make life more fun, and then sent me this imaginary exchange that actually killed me all the way to death:

David: Gwen Santos would you go to marriage camp with me

Gwen: I'm going to have to change this story when I tell everyone

It made me laugh quite a bit.

Anyway, back to the video!

Spencer: "How do you sign up for [Camp Campbell]?"

David: "Well, um, you can fax, uh, an application to [email protected]. And . . . you can know that myself and Gwen and Quartermaster and sometimes Mr. Campbell will do our best to make sure they get what they need! Which more than anything is love and support. And friendship."

Spencer: "How many dollars does this camp cost?"

David: "You know . . . it is, um . . ."

And then the conversation switches subjects and David breathes a sigh of relief.

Very shortly after this he changed his character from a woman (she was wearing a yellow shirt, which he liked because the campers wear yellow shirts) to "a Forward Scout with a positive attitude!"

"I like his style."

Spencer: "Does everybody abuse David verbally?"

David: "You know, sometimes people have harsh words. Mostly Max, and Neil, and Gwen, and Quartermaster, and Nurf."

Spencer: "Did you just list almost everyone?"

David: "Mmm . . . I'd say maybe a third."

Poor David. Somebody please protect him.

Spencer: "Yeah, I think people abuse David. I get that vibe. Or at least, I feel it in my heart. Like I wanna put ants in your bunk or something."

David: "Well, I think that says more about maybe some of the hurt you're carrying with you. And sometimes when people don't know how to process that, they act out. Do you want some trail mix?"

David just said his favorite part of trail mix is the raisins which is so cute. "They have a little bit of salt on them, which isn't typical for a raisin."

And he keeps telling chatters to watch their language.

David: "Who is my favorite camper? Aww, you know I couldn't pick a favorite! . . . But I know who has the most potential, even if he doesn't want to admit it."

I KNEW IT!!!!!

I've been saying for years that David doesn't have a favorite and gravitates towards the ones he thinks need him the most AND I FINALLY GOT ONE RIGHT!

David: "Well you know, Gwen swears and that's okay."

shipping intensifies

David: [gasp] "The moss is growing on the north side of the rock!"

Every time he nerds out about weird shit in the game I gain 3 seconds to my life.

Spencer: "Did you get teabagged?"

David: "What's that?"

Spencer: "It's where somebody places their most intimate bits on you for . . . friendship."

David: [softly] "Oh, I don't know about that."

Also David confirms that the whole show has been a single summer, so please see the "vindication" gif above.

David: "I know a lot of fun camp songs."

Spencer: "Sing 3."

David: [starts singing] "Bum-bum-bumblebee, bumblebee tuna, I love bumblebee, bumblebee tuna . . ."

Spencer: "Okay, please stop. I immediately regret this decision."

David: "Max said the same thing! One of my campers. And, uh, and my co-counselor, Gwen."

He's literally made of sunshine. I would die for this fictional man.

Spencer: "Are people at camp against their will? I feel like they are."

David: "No! . . . They don't always like it immediately, but it grows on them."

Spencer: "It sounds like they're there against their will."

David: "Well I just think that's a negative way of looking at it."

FWIW Spencer makes an excellent foil to David. Not as aggressive as Max or as dour as Gwen, but he brings a very . . . like, straight-man energy to the conversation. Like how a normal person would react to David IRL. I'd enjoy seeing these two interact more.

Spencer: "It's like your overpositivity is wanting me to balance it out with negativity."

David: "You know, I feel like that dynamic's pretty popular with me."

And the last one that I personally found noteworthy:

David: "One day we'll be able to afford safety equipment. Until then, we'll just have to deal with Quartermaster's Ropes Course. And a lot of pillows."

There's point near the last 20 minutes where either it got kinda boring or I just got too tired to keep track. But if there are any quotes you think I missed, please share them!
