[Inspired by a post from @master-xochimilli. This marks the 50th and final post of my marathon. Bear in mind I wrote these in the span of around 36 hours so I'll go and reformat/re-edit anything if mentioned. I hope you enjoyed the ride :)]
I’d love to hold you in my arms when you’re sad. I’d kiss you deeply while I grind my hips against yours, slowly reaching your hot depths.
“I promise you I’ll be with you every step of the way,” I’d say, in between nibbling your nose. “I know it’s terrible but I promise I won’t leave your side. I. Am. SO. Proud of you.” I’d continue, enunciating my words with deeper thrusts inside you.
“There, there, let’s wipe those tears away from you.” I’d whisper, while dabbing your tears away. I’d kiss you softly, replacing those tears with soft, loving kisses. My lips would reach for yours, pressing softly. Not to make out with you, but to help you remember that you’re loved. You’re supported. That I’d share your sadness with you, so for now… for now, let me share some joy with you.

yourusername welcome back to my postgame penalty box update show: quinn is the nhl's first star of the week edition!
the canucks are now 3/3 for the four game series against the oilers with their 6-2 win tonight, and oh, what a win it was!
professional best friend and hockey player quintin jerome hughes is SO tight with the hockey gods that they made the oilers's vincent desharnais poke the puck quinn just shot into his own net! thanks hockey gods for the quinn goal, a.k.a the first goal for the boys!
my blonde princess scored two of the six goals tonight, and quinny quinn assisted on both! #JustBestieThings he also assisted on millsy's goal, giving him A FOUR POINT NIGHT! AGAIN!
in case you aren't keeping count with me, this was quinn's 4th 3+ point night of the season, 20th of his career, his 2nd 4+ point night of the season, 3rd of his career, his 4th 3+ assist game of the season, 15th of his career, and his 5th multi point game of the season, 50th of his career! that's a lot of top notch games!
and for my favorite part of the game: the third period! for one, 🚨my man millsy and zach hyman dropped the gloves🥊🚨 they just... didn't do it well... i believed in j.t. but hyman was flailing about (it looked like he was trying to punch with both hands at once... interesting tactic i might have to steal when on regular ground) and j.t. quickly had him down on the ice! and digi held back a rowdy connor mcdavid and he fell to his knees! this is all because mccaptain was acting out all night and exchanged some cross checks with millsy, so hyman fought millsy for touching his captain, and digi grabbed mccaptain for touching his bestie
AND THEN, less than a minute later, mcdavid still had some angry cat vibes left in him and fell over suter while trying to cross check him and a scrum ensued! after being yanked out of the scrum, mcdavid then decided to shove quinn for no reason and then quinn JUMPED ON HIM to hold him back from going back in! i love it here! mcdavid got a penalty for roughing, and mr. leon draisaitl got a misconduct! AND LATER THE OILERS HEAD COACH GOT A MISCONDUCT! HOW COACHY CRO OF HIM!
in conclusion, i’m so proud of you quinn! you keep getting better and better every game and i'm enjoying every minute of it! here's to many more four point nights🤍 i love you way past infinity!

Hey yall! It’s been a minute since I posted on Tumblr! I just want to let you know my series: When it’s over is alive and well on Ao3. I stopped posting chapter updates on here because I felt like I was clogging up the tags.
This prompt was inspired by an AI chat prompt weirdly enough. (So if you’re reading this and you made the chat please message me so I can tag u bb!)
Anyway here’s a product of me being sleep deprived and literally just being mushy in general. I seriously wrote this last night before I went to bed and it hasn’t been edited. I may go back and edit, I just figured releasing this fic into the wild wasn’t the worst thing I could do.
This is a fluffy kind of OOC fic for Chris Redfield. I hope y’all enjoy
“Late night feeling”
A Chris Redfield x reader fic
Tags: fluff, migraines mentions of death, intimate but platonic relationships, younger woman X older man dynamic
You were resting after a rough deployment. You had made it back to the BSAA barracks and returned to your small room that had just enough space for your twin size bed, a desk and some shelving.
You had made the space work to the best of your advantage; free housing meant you had to get creative but you managed to make your small room as welcoming as possible.
The other soldiers were used to the barebones when it came to accommodations, and usually you didn’t mind when you were out on deployment, but when you were stateside you made sure to have all the comforts you could fit in the tiny room.
Pretty soon, you were popular in your unit for having just about anything. Did somebody have a headache from the dry air? You had a humidifier. Somebody needed some extra toiletries but didn't want to leave the building? You always had spare supplies. Cold medicine? You had it.
Pretty soon you were known as “mom” despite being on the younger side. It made you proud, because your position was technically as a medic, and it meant more to you that you could care for your teams stateside as well.
You were studying the popcorn ceiling in the small room for the 50th time, trying to get yourself to get to sleep when you heard a knock on your door.
You opened it thinking it was another soldier needing something small, but were shocked to instead see Chris Redfield, Captain of multiple elite task forces and founder of the BSAA.
You didn’t know whether to salute or curtsy, you were so close to falling asleep and were delirious
He smiled at your obvious discomfort. “I heard from the guys earlier you were the one to see if I needed anything.”
You looked at him wide eyed, still shocked that he came to your room late at night. He must really need something bad.
“Y-yeah, I’m sort of the barracks *mom* of sorts.” You giggled nervously. “What can I get you?”
Chris sighed. “Do you have anything for migraines?”
You looked at Chris, thoughtfully.
“I have a couple of solutions, how long have you had symptoms?”
Chris looks at you, you can tell what he’s going to tell you he’s embarrassed about. “…4 hours.”
You looked at him in horror. You knew Redfield was hardcore, but you had some migraines yourself before, if he was seeking your help, it must have been pretty intense.
Without thinking, you mentally switched into caretaker mode.
You quickly pulled the covers on your bed, and pulled out a foam wedge you had underneath your bed that you used to get comfortable for reading or watching tv.
Chris couldn’t help but grimace through his pain.
“Are you used to having late night visitors Y/L/N?” He looked at the foam wedge. “What the hell is that for?”
You snapped your head back at him. “What are you insinuating?” Genuinely curious, did he think you were going to treat his migraines by fucking him?
Chris grimaced again. “I hear you younger girls are into some wild things these days, but I didn’t expect it from you.” He put his hands up defensively. “More power to you though.”
You laughed from your belly. “Captain with all due respect, I think you’re seriously confused on what this is for.” You placed the wedge close to the foot of the bed. “Plus, if that’s how you think we’re gonna fix your migraine, you’re seriously confused on what my job here is.” You smiled at him.
You had only worked with Chris a couple of times. He wasn’t a stranger to you by any means, but you definitely weren’t friends either.
He was your superior and you respected him. The first time the two of you had met, you were a new recruit trying to make it onto the field.
You had passed every cognitive test the BSAA had to offer, but your physical skills were shit to say the least. You were athletic, you were great when it came to stamina, but when it came to hand to hand combat and firearms, you hesitated.
You remember the disappointed look your supervisor gave you when review time came. You were extremely gifted when it came to observations and patching men up, but you were a liability on the field.
“Get used to seeing the inside of the clinic, sweetheart.” You remembered him saying to you.
You remember going to the gun range, it was late in the afternoon and you thought no one was there. You were crying while missing the target completely. You knew you looked insane, but damn you felt so good.
“Why the hell can’t I just do this one simple thing?” You remember saying out loud to yourself. “The stupid boys back home could do this shit, but I doubt they could suture up flesh, and I can’t deploy because of this one thing!” You said louder emptying the clip into the target.
You pressed the button that brought the target to you. You looked at it helplessly; the bullets holes were all over the place. You crumpled the paper furiously into your hands.
“That's one way to neutralize a target,” you heard a warm baritone behind you say.
You turned around to see Chris Redfield with his own gear, ready to begin his own practice.
You saluted him. “Captain Redfield, Sir.”
He saluted you back. “At ease soldier, you don’t have to be so formal, no one else is here.”
“Y-yes sir.”
He walked closer to you, clearly in his element.
“I heard news on your performance review, Y/L/N. That’s brutal.” He said, trying to sound comforting.
Your lip quivered, you were angry and disappointed in yourself. You wanted to angry-cry, but not in front of one of the founders of the BSAA. He probably already thought you were weak, crying would just exacerbate the issue.
“It was.” You said looking down.
He looked at you sympathetically, and put his arm on your shoulder. “You have an incredible brain though.” He said, trying to lighten the mood. “We were really pulling for you this time, we need more personalities like you on the field.”
You looked up at him. “Really?”
Chris smiled at you. “I definitely don’t picture you in spec ops anytime soon, but we definitely could use you in damage control.”
You returned his smile.
“But you also understand why we can’t send you out there unprepared, you could be ambushed anytime.”
“I understand.” A heavy tear fell from your left eye and you immediately wiped it away, in fears of Chris noticing.
He looked at you sympathetically, “It’s normal, not being able to just want to shoot a living thing.”
“But why is it so easy for everyone else? I just can’t do it!” You said, frustrated.
“I think it’s because you’re overthinking it.” He shifts on his feet. “Think of it this way, if someone was going to hurt someone you cared about, even slightly, wouldn’t you not hesitate to take them down?”
You honestly had never thought about it before. You really were thinking of BOWS like victims, but if it were between you and your fellow soldiers getting out alive you wouldn’t hesitate.
Chris saw the gears in your brain working. “I knew it.”
“Knew what?”
“You think of them like they’re normal people, and they definitely may have been at one time.” He sighed, running his hand through his hair. “But you can’t think of them like that, it’ll get you killed, rookie.”
“Yessir,”’
“You know,” he said, picking up his duffle bag with his arsenal of personal weapons. “I actually have free time this evening, can I show you a couple of things?”
You looked up at him, shocked he would even want to spend one of his rare free moments with a dumbass like you.
“Are you sure? I know you’re always busy, are you sure you want to spend it mentoring my ass?”
“I don’t have anything else better to do, plus I see potential in you, rookie.” He motioned for you to follow him to the lane you were at before he came in.
He positioned himself behind you to perfect your form, gently touching your biceps and arms. He had a strong, but gentle grip on you. You tried not to turn into a teenage girl at his touch, but you seriously hadn’t got any action in a long time.
Chris, remained professional as always; if he noticed that you were crushing on him in the moment he didn’t acknowledge it, he just focused on the task at hand.
The afternoon turned into late in the evening, but you were finally comfortable with shooting your gun.
“Look at you, that was maybe 3 hours of proper training?” Chris looked at your work. “Looks like you’ll be out in the field in no time.”
Chris’ kindness stayed with you, and you were able to get into a lower ranking team, but a team nonetheless. You were finally able to help on the ground.
Now, Chris was looking to you for help and you couldn’t disappoint him.
“I’m going to have you sit down on my bed, okay? I promise I’m not gonna try anything funny with you okay?” You joked with him. Trying to lighten the mood.
“Honestly Y/L/N, I’m in so much pain, I’m willing to try anything.” He said sitting down.
“Good.”
You instructed him to lay down, putting the wedge underneath his calves, elevating his feet. You then grabbed a thick towel from one of your drawers and rolled it up. You gently placed the towel under his neck and made sure to keep his head supported with a pillow.
Chris grunted.
You looked down at him worried. “Are you okay?”
“Oh yeah,” he breathed out. “This is the best I’ve felt in a while.
“Good!” You chirped. “Where’s your pain radiating from?” You asked, getting up to turn on the humidifier. You knew from your own experience warm steam always helped, especially since it was December and seemed to worsen migraines.
“It feels like it’s behind my eyes, but it really does feel like it’s all over.”
“Is that normal for your migraines?” You asked putting hand sanitizer on. You had an idea of what you were going to do, but you wanted to make sure.
“Recently, yeah. I sustained a pretty bad neck and head Injury a couple years ago and they worsened from there.” He said, closing his eyes. His voice lowered like he was starting to get some relief.
“Are you okay with me touching you, Captain?” You said hesitantly.
“Of course, Doc.”
You smiled. “Not a doctor, but I think I can help.”
You began massaging the base of his neck, gently pulling his head to realign his spine. You were going at it for a couple of minutes before you heard him groan.
You stopped for a moment. “Still okay?”
“Better than okay. Can you keep going?” He asked sheepishly.
You were thankful he had his eyes closed, because his tone made you blush.
You began to let your hands move to his temples massaging the tense muscles in his face.
“You really carry a lot of stress,” you said trying to make his facial muscles relax manually.
“I guess 20 years of fighting monsters will do that to you.” He said bluntly.
“I’m sorry Captain-“ you stammered.
“Y/N drop the captain shit, it’s Chris. Please call me Chris when we’re alone.” It almost sounded like a plea.
“Yessir.”
He smiled, lightening the mood again. “I bet they ate you alive in boot camp.”
You smiled. “They did, but I survived.” You giggled.
You began to work your fingers over his sinuses, being sure to gently, but firmly relieve the tension in his face. Your fingers gently caressed a couple of mostly healed scars over his handsome face.
“I heard you got to see some action in the desert, Y/L/N.”
You sighed. It was a sensitive topic for you right now, but you didn’t want to offend Chris. “Yeah, I had to shoot my first aggressor.”
“You sound upset.”
“It was just,” You sighed heavily, trying to push the image of the infected soldier from your memory.
“We don’t have to talk about it.” Chris said, opening your eyes to meet your gaze. Before that moment you hadn’t realized how intimate this interaction was with him. His head was in your lap on a pillow, supported by your crossed legs.
“I knew him.” You said quietly.
“I heard he was one of our guys,” Chris said, his tone tinged with a slight sadness.
“He always was so shy and he was so into his routine it was funny. The other members would always clown on him.” You were reminiscing about your comrade.
“I always keep snacks in my room, and one day he broke his routine to see if I had anything. I was so happy that he asked me for something, that I kept buying the same snack so he would keep coming to me, I just wanted him to feel like I had his back.” You started to sniffle, feeling a burning sensation in your sinuses.
“I don’t know what happened he came back from
recon fine, I had just patched him up; then he turned.” You couldn’t help but tremble, Chris felt this and sat up.
You were slightly surprised by his sudden actions, he turned to face you.
He held your shoulders. “I need you to promise me that you’re not going to let this destroy your life Y/N. Remember what I said, it was either you or him.”
“But why did it have to be him?” You let your emotions go. You began to cry, you were wiping your own tears when Chris wrapped his arms around you. It immediately took you off guard.
He just held you, the warmth of his body radiating onto yours, you no longer felt so cold and lonely. He slowly let go of the embrace.
“I’m sorry.” You whispered.
“Don’t apologize, that’s a lot to have on your heart.” Chris looked at you more seriously this time. “Have they done your mental evaluation yet? You guys didn’t get back that long ago.”
You let out a sigh. “Honestly, after all that work to get me in this unit, I think I’m about to fail and be released because of a psych evaluation.”
Chris looked at you sympathetically.
“I guess it wasn’t meant to be, I really am just not cut out for this am I?” You pulled your knees to your chest.
He placed a warm hand on your leg.
“You’re doing just fine, the first kill is always the worst, but it doesn’t get easier. You just get tougher.”
You instinctively put your hand over his and squeezed. “I can’t imagine what you’ve seen, what keeps you going?”
Chris rubbed his hand over his face, his migraine had disappeared finally. “I wanted to stop getting close to others, I wanted to shut down, stop caring about people.”
You rubbed his arm and felt him shiver.
“But, that wasn’t who I am. I’d never stop caring, it was the reason I joined the Air Force and the RPD. It just led me…here.” He trailed off.
“We can’t control what happens to us, is what you’re saying, right Chris?”
He smiled. “Exactly. We can control how it affects us. You’re a sweet girl Y/N, I couldn’t stand to watch this line of work harden you.”
You blushed at the sweet girl comment.
“Well I guess then you’ll be happy that I’m thinking of going to TerraSave.” You said, nervous of how he was going to react.
Instead of looking at you with disgust like you had anticipated, he was excited.
“TerraSave? Really? I’m close with a major player over there, maybe I can tell her you’re interested.”
Your heart sank at the mention of a woman he was close with, you knew you never had a chance with him, but you liked to indulge in the healthy fantasy every once in a while.
“That would be great.” You said sheepishly.
“She’s my sister in case you’re wondering.” He winked at you.
You were embarrassed that your face gave it away that you were jealous.
He then boldly lifted your chin with his hand. “If you end up working for TerraSave, there won’t be any rules against taking you out on a date either.”
“Chris, really?” You laughed. You were in shock.
“I like a woman who doesn’t know when to stop,” he winked at you.
“You’re disgusting.” You playfully hit his shoulder.
He feigned defensiveness. “Hey, I was talking about not giving up on reaching a goal, I don’t know where your mind went to.”
You felt your self melt, he was so dreamy, exactly like you imagined. “I never thought I’d see this side of you, Chris. It’s nice.”
He cupped your face with his hand and you instinctively leaned into his palm.
“It helps when I’m with someone who’s able to bring it out of me” he said, stroking your face with his thumb.
You felt equally relaxed with him too, so relaxed that you let out a yawn.
Chris only chuckled. “I guess it is late, huh?” He said gently pulling his hand away.
You whined at the sensation.
“Don’t get bratty on me now,” he laughed.
You put your head into your hands. “How’s your head?”
“Much better,” he sat up straighter. “Crazy what a few moments of relaxing can do.”
You smiled at him, “Feel free to come to my room anytime.”

What did you like most about everything everywhere all at once?
Oh god 😭😭😭
How can I even begin to answer that question? I mean there are just so many aspects in that movie that are absolutely incredible, from the cast to the costumes to the special effects it's all a bunch of exceptional pieces of a puzzle put together to make a work of art that is possibly one of the best films we've ever seen
But if I was forced to pick just One Thing about the movie I like the most, I would definitely have to say the writing
The script and the writing behind it are the main reason this movie is as good as it is, without it this movie would have been nothing, I mean there's a reason why it took the Daniels almost a decade to write this thing. They started coming up with the premise and doing research all the way back in 2010 and there is no doubt in my mind that those years taken to perfect the script before ever starting production are completely responsible for this movie being so incredible.
They didn't put their first draft on the screen. They put their 50th draft on the screen
How many movies can you think of with great premises that have absolutely shit execution? And it all begins in the writer's room. The writing process is so important to making a film or TV show successful and the reason why Everything Everywhere All At Once is so good is because the Daniels took that process seriously and took their vision seriously, unwilling to press record on the camera until the script was as perfect as they could possibly get it and be proud of their work
It took the Daniels 8 years to write this script, and then they filmed everything within a production schedule of only like 30 days (before reshoots) and then about a year of editing and post production before the film was in theaters. That is a ridiculously fast turn around for a movie and without those 8 years of perfecting the script there's no way on earth the production schedule would have been as easy and as fast as it was
I could wax poetic about basically every aspect of this movie till I'm blue in the face, but the writing is the framework and the solid foundation that allows every other bit of the production to stand as tall as it does and I will forever be chasing that kind of brilliance in all of my own writing for the rest of my time on this planet for sure.
I mean there's a reason why this movie doesn't have just one singular overly famous quote, but in fact has like 20, from "In another life I would have really liked just doing laundry and taxes with you" to "No one is unloveable there is always something to love" and "You think because l'm kind that it means I'm naive, and maybe I am. It's strategic and necessary. This is how I fight." and "Please be kind, escpecially when we don't know what's going on" and "We can do whatever we want. Nothing matters" and "Right is a small box invented by people who are afraid. And I know what it's like being stuck in that box" and "I'm useless alone. We're all useless alone, it's a good thing you're not alone" and so on and so forth, there is line after line of dialogue that reaches straight into your chest to physically touch your heart with their words. How many movie quotes can do that without the actor's inflection and performance backing it up? How many lines can break you just from reading them the way half the quotes from this movie do? How many movies even have a singular line that can hit you the way ALL of these lines in EEAAO hit you? The cast and their deliveries are absolutely incredible and 100% aid and elevate the source material, but these quotes were already powerhouses when they were just print on a page, putting them into the talented mouths of the movie's cast only elevates them even further
Actors are taught how to make shit writing sound like good writing, the amount of actors I've seen having to fight an uphill battle to make garbage dialogue work is basically every film put out these days, but the writing in EEAAO isn't forcing these actors to fight with reality to make their lines sound like words a real human being would say, it's already so incredible that the actors can play and discover a different kind of truth within every word instead of forcing themselves to find the truth within words no real human has ever passed through their lips
Bottom line, I suppose to me, the best part of EEAAO is the writing behind it, because without good writing, you would have absolutely nothing

So- my thoughts on the episode. Spoilers!!!
Dan's exit could've been interesting and it wasn't really, but it was a very normal human thing to do and Dan has been played straight as a very normal human guy, so makes sense.
I'm happy they recruited Ace and Tegan to UNIT rather than continuing Ace's charity story. They already seemed to do everything they could with it in Big Finish and the ACE book and it doesn't fit on-screen Ace well at all. She could've given the company over to someone else or be using it to fund UNIT when the government doesn't want to, but being in the field rather than behind a desk is... mmm. So much better. (I'll have to edit my longfic draft a bit, I was waiting for the episode to come out to add her section, but not too drastically)
I didn't expect them to confirm Tegan/Nyssa one way or the other. Farewell, Sarah Jane is nice, but the Doctor Who Lockdown stories that weren't for the book have been almost completely ignored thus far and I doubt that'll change. For instance, Big Finish gave present Ace a K-9, (in her weakest story imo) but it explicitly wasn't Sarah Jane's.
They also don't outright deny/confirm other expanded media either. "Three decades for me" could mean a number of things, including new meetings with the Doctor getting lost in Ace's short-term memory thanks to Brax and she just didn't age much until she was put back in her own time after Gallifrey.
There is a very particular itch for the Master for me that only Sacha Dhawan has scratched and Rasputin and taking the Doctor's body presumably for the extra (now possibly infinite) lives, something he's always wanted to do but never quite succeeded in doing- letting him actually do it, all felt very fresh.
The past faces manifesting in their mind during a time of terrible danger thing hasn't been done on TV I don't think, and it was done in the perfect surreal way.
The hologram 5 and 7 were adorable. Five comforting Tegan about Adric and Seven making up with Ace and acknowledging she's grown up and he's proud of her on-screen. (Chibnall you actually remembered that he's basically her dad when so many writers have forgotten that especially with the few modern-day Ace stories.)
I felt very teased with the possibility of a Thasmin kiss. They didn't have to, but that left something balled up in my chest. The ice creams were quite literally sweet though.
All of the bad guys are just fodder for the Master, that's kinda meh. His plan being trigger every volcano on Earth to cause a doomsday rather than just hyperbeaming it with his death star planet is a very Classic Master plan though.
Kate didn't do much and that makes me sad. Still no Osgood=homophobic. I don't make the rules. At least she's not dead, even though Chibnall could do so justifiably, since the (Jenna Redgrave) Kate is his character.
The plot is messy but there is a through line and it comes to a decent conclusion after that huge rollercoaster.
Companion support group is an official thing now I thought that would only ever exist in fanfic and comedy skits.
The end... I'm sorry. I just didn't like it. I never liked 10, he's my least favourite Doctor. I'd have preferred if they did half the regeneration here, fade to white, credits roll, the other half in the next special, because while I love David Tennant in other roles (especially Crowley) I cannot stand his Doctor, think he’s overstayed his welcome and wish I could ignore it.
Overall I think it's a good story and it has all the love for classic who that I wish the 50th had but didn't. Better written than DotD? I don't think so, but I like it better. (For one I actually like most of the characters involved, not only 3 of them) It definitely feels like a comfort episode, very self-indulgent, very camp and fun, fanfic-y but in a good way- but also this thing is a straight-up whole action movie, not an ordinary special.
Also you can still 100% tell that after series 10 Chibnall binge-read the VNAs, has the same vibes as the books, including one I was reading last night. To be fair Transit is all about space trains but that's just a coincidence I totally forgot there'd be a space train in the episode .

GA-20 Interview: Outlier Blues
Tumblr media
BY JORDAN MAINZER
Even though it seems like everything is rehashed versions of something else these days, guitarist Matthew Stubbs thinks GA-20 is unique. Indeed, when the Boston-based trio (Stubbs, vocalist Pat Faherty, and drummer Tim Carman) released their debut album Lonely Soul in 2019 via Colemine/Karma Chief, they seemed like the only contemporary band making music wholly inspired by classic Chicago blues, loud and proud, raw and ear-shattering. In the years that followed, they’d double down, releasing an excellent 2021 record of songs written or performed by Hound Dog Taylor, in conjunction with Alligator Records for their 50th anniversary. Last fall, they released Crackdown, which delved further into the garage-punk side of blues. And now, they’ve revealed Live in Loveland, a pre-pandemic relic that tells the story of the first few years of the band more clearly than ever.
GA-20 had recorded and originally planned to release Crackdown shortly after Lonely Soul, mirroring the fast schedule and prolific recording nature of the legends they grew up listening to. In the early stages of 2020, setting out on a tour, they stopped in Loveland, Ohio, home to Colemine and its associated Plaid Room Records store. Burning through Lonely Soul favorites, Crackdown highlights, and other unreleased covers and originals, the band lit up an after-hours in-store at Plaid Room. They covered Little Walter’s “My Baby’s Sweeter”, rife with a bridge chock full of blistering guitar solos, and brought the crowd down with Lonely Soul’s surfy title track and the heartsick “Dry Run”. They paid tribute to their roots with the Chicago blues of “I Let Someone In” and “My Soul”. Faherty especially shined, with gravel-throated performances on “Lonely Soul” and the unreleased original “Hold It One More Time”. The performance, recorded to tape, edited down, and switched up, makes up Live in Loveland, the band’s first live record.
Shortly after their performance at Plaid Room, COVID hit, and GA-20 delayed the release of Crackdown until last fall. In between was when they collaborated with Alligator for GA-20 Does Hound Dog Taylor: Try It...You Might Like It!; they didn’t play any Hound Dog songs at Plaid Room because, as much as they grew up worshipping the house rocker himself, they didn’t even yet know they would release a tribute record. So if you’re a record completist who cares about canon and lore, know that Crackdown was supposed to be the band’s second as opposed to third LP. Either way, the ever-changing-yet-consistently timeless and, yes, unique band already has finished their next album, an acoustic concept record. And they’re writing their next electric one--you might hear “Hold It One More Time” on it.
Earlier this month, I spoke over the phone with Stubbs from his house in Providence about classic live albums, setting up a setlist, the story of how GA-20 signed to Colemine, and where they fit in music today. Read our conversation below, edited for length and clarity.

Since I Left You: GA-20 has released live EPs before. What made you want to do a whole live record?
Matthew Stubbs: First of all, historically, all styles of music, but especially blues and jazz, have put out lots of live records. Growing up, lots of my favorite blues records were live records because in blues and jazz, there’s a lot of improvisation. Every night can be a little bit different or very different. One of my favorite records is BB King’s Live at the Regal. It was one of the first blues albums I really connected with.
This particular record, we were on our way to do a gig. We were starting a tour, and our first stop was Loveland, Ohio, which is where our record label, [Colemine] is based. They also own a store called Plaid Room Records. We were starting to tour and had a day off, so we decided to do a show after hours in the record shop and sell tickets. A couple days before, I had contacted Terry Cole, the owner of the label, who also records. They have a recording studio above the record store. I just threw it out there, “Why don’t we try recording tonight to see what happens?” He had just bought a second TASCAM-388 tape machine. We pulled in the night before the gig, and he was working on the tape machine in the store. It was a spur of the moment idea. We didn’t know we’d get a record out of it. It was fun: great audience, and it was cool being in the hometown of the label.
SILY: Were you pretty much playing the songs on this record on the tour, from Lonely Soul and Crackdown?
MS: Yeah. Lonely Soul songs and Crackdown songs. This live record has three unreleased songs, one original and two covers. We recorded all night. I went through it and picked what songs had stronger performances, and songs off those two records. It was recorded in January 2020, before we did the Hound Dog record, so there’s no Hound Dog [songs] on this particular record.
SILY: But you had already been working on Crackdown?
MS: Yeah. Crackdown was recorded not long after Lonely Soul. The plan was to release it in 2020, but shortly after recording this [live record], everything shut down, and we couldn’t tour. We decided to hold off on releasing [Crackdown] so we could do proper touring and a proper release behind it. During COVID, we got approached by Alligator Records to do a record for them. They didn’t realize we were already signed to Colemine. So I cooked up the idea of doing a Hound Dog Taylor tribute record. Alligator started its label to release Hound Dog Taylor’s first LP. It was the 50th anniversary of the label and Hound Dog’s first record, and we were all just at home hanging out. So we ended up recording that and releasing it before Crackdown, but it was recorded after Crackdown. It was released under Colemine and Karma Chief in partnership with Alligator. We used their promotion in coordination with our team and got their full stamp of approval.
SILY: In your sets, do you work in Hound Dog songs?
MS: Every night, we do a few Hound Dog songs for sure.
SILY: What was the first time you heard Harold Burrage’s “I Cry For You” and Little Walter’s “My Baby’s Sweeter”, the first two songs on Live in Loveland?
MS: “I Cry For You”, I remember hearing that song at 16. I got a double CD compilation of Cobra Records, and that song was on there. I’d always loved that song and never heard anybody do it. When we started GA-20, it was on the list of cover songs I’d like to do. I presented it to Pat, who sings it very well. “My Baby’s Sweeter”, Pat and I had been doing since we started the band. We didn’t have any originals yet and were doing lots of 1950s Chicago blues, Little Walter and stuff, even though we didn’t have a harmonica player. It’s [been] in our catalog of songs to pull from for a long time. We did a full gig that night, and [it was] one of the slow blues numbers we called on the fly. We didn’t play it planning to release anything. The performance was good.
SILY: What’s the story behind the original song played that night and on here, “Hold It One More Time”? Have you recorded it yet?
MS: I think it’s gonna be on the next electric studio album. We haven't recorded it yet but had written it not long before that gig. I love blues and soul music, but I also love garage rock, so I’m pulling from it on that song.
SILY: I love how when Pat introduced “Dry Run”, he told the story behind it, that it was about a girl who was using him to practice her flirting. Since at so many blues gigs bands are just playing standards as opposed to originals, I feel like I so rarely hear an ounce of the story behind the song, especially the ones about heartbreak.
MS: Pat wrote those lyrics, and I arranged it with him. He tells the story most nights, and people always chuckle.
SILY: How many songs did you play this night?
MS: It was probably a 75-90 minute set, and for the most part, our songs aren’t very long compared to most modern day blues bands. We never have a song that goes over 4 minutes. It’s maybe 2 and a half or 3 and a half [minutes], and then maybe one longer song. So usually, a 75-minute set has about 20 songs.
SILY: Did you just take out some of the songs for this record, or did you actually rearrange the order?
MS: The order of the record is definitely not the order we played them in. There are a couple songs that go into each other that we kept, but I definitely changed the sequence for the live record to get it to have a smoother flow.
SILY: How would you compare sequencing a setlist versus sequencing a live record?
MS: I’d probably approach it similarly. The only thing that changes is not doing 75 minutes of music on this record. We usually try to come out with a bang, something pretty hard hitting. I like to have peaks and valleys in a set. I want to draw the listener in and have dynamics with quiet moments, loud moments, songs more focused on the lyrics and songs more focused on the energy of guitar playing, or drum solos. I want to keep people engaged. People don’t have super long attention spans, so whatever I can do to keep them with us in the show.
Tumblr media
SILY: What’s the story behind the cover art for this record?
MS: Terry’s wife Whitney shot the show, and the effect on there is a crystal she put in front of the lens. The vibe of it was more on Terry. We talked about what we wanted, and we had that photo, and I wanted it to be vibrant and jump out on the shelf of a record store or on the merch table.
SILY: What are some of your favorite cities to play?
MS: I love playing Chicago. A lot of major cities tend to be really good to us. Los Angeles--I used to live out there, so I like coming back through. Austin. Denver.
SILY: Are there any countries overseas that tend to be really receptive?
MS: They’re all pretty good to us. This past year--and we’re going back in June--we went to Finland. I had been there with other bands, but not GA-20. We had maybe 8 gigs, and a bunch of them were sold out. It blew my mind that we rolled into a theater in Helsinki and it was sold out, us having never been there and a fairly new band. Every time we go back to London, it’s growing and growing. Spain is fun. France is great. Europe and the UK are very supportive in general.
SILY: What else is next for you?
MS: We have a couple singles that will come out in a few months. We’re gonna release a 45. We have another album all done that’ll come out in a year or so. It’s more of a concept album, an acoustic album. Right now, we’re writing the next original electric record.
SILY: Do you feel a kinship with other contemporary original American blues bands?
MS: A little bit. There are a few that are into similar things we’re doing. Modern blues in general for me, a lot of the modern day blues rock scene, it’s hard to explain unless you see us live and those bands live, but we definitely rock. We’re pretty loud. I consider us a traditional blues band live, and when we’re making records, I’m trying to make timeless records. There are some modern elements to it, but I like 50s, 60s, 70s records for blues and soul. A lot of the modern day blues releases seem like they’re coming from a different place, with their influences starting with the British blues of the late 60s on, or Southern rock. Their approach is [that] the entrée of the song is the guitar solo. Everything is based on the guitar solo coming, and long collections of notes. That’s not us, man. We have songs that don’t have a guitar solo. Most of them are in the 3-minute range. I’m more interested in producing songs I’m interested in listening to. To my knowledge, there aren’t really any up-and-coming blues bands making those kinds of records. There are bands in other genres making them, especially traditional country and soul music, like [those on] Daptone. Some garage rock bands are doing it. But not a ton of blues bands are making that style of record, getting out on the road and trying to reach a broader audience.
There are a few younger players I dig. Jontavious Willis is a player we’re friends with. Eddy 9 Volt is a good buddy. I like Cedric Burnside. Those are who come to mind. But I feel like we’re slight outliers in general.
SILY: That’s why I noticed GA-20 in the first place. It’s timeless, harking back to an era long before I was alive, but that sound like those old records I’ve heard. It retains that spirit without pretension.
MS: When we recorded Lonely Soul, we didn’t have a record label yet. We recorded 6 out of the 10 songs. I sent the EP/demo to Colemine and Alligator. They both got back to me in the same week. Alligator very quickly rejected it. They didn’t want anything to do with that record. Bruce [Iglauer], the president, said it was too distorted and too retro sounding. He didn’t like the production at all. He thought it was too raw. At the time, I found it interesting because I didn’t know I could be too raw for a label that started for Hound Dog Taylor, one of the most raw electric guitar players of all time. I said, “Why don’t you take the weekend and listen to it just in case?” He turned it down. The same week, Colemine got back to me, and they had no blues acts, loved it, and wanted us to go back in and record a few more to make it a full-length. The non-blues label that put out a lot of cool sounding soul records--and now that they have Karma Chief, it’s not just soul music--that had the common thread of timeless production, [accepted us,] and the blues label wanted nothing to do with the up-and-coming band playing raw blues. Then [Alligator] saw us live, and when COVID hit, they sent an email saying, “We saw you live, and we get it now.” They didn’t understand the production sounding lo-fi and raw, because new blues records don’t sound that way anymore. Eddie 9 Volt releases ones that sounded that way. I also heard a rumor that Alligator wasn’t interested in his first record, but I don’t know that for sure. I’m not saying I’m the greatest thing ever, but I’m pretty proud of [Lonely Soul], and I think we’re outliers.
SILY: Is there anything you’ve been listening to, reading, or watching lately that’s caught your attention?
MS: I really like Sierra Ferrell. I like Ty Segall, King Gizzard. There’s a band out of Australia called Surprise Chef, an instrumental, like an El Michels Affair-type groovy funk 70′s thing. I listen to a lot of instrumental music. I have a side project kind of on hiatus now called [The] Antiguas, which is like psychedelic twang cinematic music.

FaZe Clan is paying tribute to their beginnings by collaborating with the New York Islanders, creating content with the local fanbase, and establishing limited edition FaZe Islanders merchandise. As part of the collaboration, FaZe Clan branding has been integrated within the Islanders Fisherman logo through the well-known “FaZe Up” hand gesture.
“We’re thrilled to honor our roots and come back to Long Island,'' said FaZe Clan member and original FaZe House member, FaZe Blaze. “FaZe Clan's history begins here and to be back and working with the Islanders feels like a powerful tribute in honoring these hometown brands. The Islanders have an innovative vision to find new ways to be inclusive and fun in aligning the gaming and traditional NHL fans together in an immersive and educational night, and we are proud to be part of this historic collaboration."

Time for your Rock Report
R.E.M. lead singer Michael Stipe recently released his debut solo single "Future If Future" on 12-inch climate-friendly bioplastic vinyl. "Future If Future" marks the first of its kind release to be made commercially available in the music industry. Produced by Brian Eno, the split single also features "Oh My Heart" by Beatie Wolfe.
Proceeds from the sale of the single will benefit Eno's environmental charity EarthPercent.
A limited edition of 500 copies has already been sold out via Bandcamp.
Nita Strauss recently released a new instrumental solo single, titled "Summer Storm," from her upcoming second solo album. Speaking about the new release, the former Alice Cooper guitarist said, "Instrumental music is where my heart is, and 'Summer Storm' might be the song I feel captures my personal style the most: cathartic, driving and emotional." "While a lot of the upcoming record will have guest vocalists, I'm also so proud of the instrumental tracks and excited to officially unleash this one on the world," she added.
"Summer Storm" is a follow-up to "Dead Inside," featuring guest vocals from Disturbed frontman David Draiman.
YES have announced details for the U.S. leg of their "The Album Series Tour 2022," celebrating the 50th anniversary of the rock band's iconic 1972 album, Close To The Edge. This marks the band's first trek in the U.S. since 2019 and will kick off with two shows at the Keswick Theatre in Glenside, Pennsylvania, on October 7 and 8. The U.S. leg will wrap in New York at the NYCB Theatre on November 19. Tickets will go on sale on September 2. The U.S. tour is dedicated to the late Alan White, the band's legendary drummer who died in May. Before the tour gets underway, a special tribute concert — "Alan White: Celebrating His Life and Music" — will be held on October 2 at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle.
