Teddy left the trees and shrubs of the low lands behind and trekked up Melina Pass. Transitioning from one side of a mountain to the other and seeing every little rock along the way. It's always amazing how much ground you can cover given some time on such little paws.

How forests flood rivers, An investigative documentary on slash by John Campbell, March 4, 2023
We drove in the long way - via State Highway 35, through Te Araroa, Ruatoria, Tokomaru Bay and Tolaga Bay.
Everywhere we went, there was wood.
It's called slash - the waste wood left behind by the forestry industry after pine trees have been harvested.
In rivers. On farms. On the coastline. Piled up outside people's homes. Everywhere.
In total, we spent 19 days in the region, talking to people, filming, covering the damage of two cyclones for 1 News, and observing the impacts of this debris. The more we saw, the more damage we realised it was doing.
People are exhausted by it.
It’s a big and complex issue, not only in Gisborne.

“I grew up swimming competitively. When other life commitments got the best of me, running became a natural transition, providing an outlet to re-ignite my competitive drive. It became a solo pursuit, an everyday habit to push myself mentally and physically. However, running sometimes felt lonely and became monotonous and demotivating with constant comparison.
For studies and work purposes, I moved to different countries and running, in particular, became a great way to explore different places and connected me to a community. Running largely became a social pursuit for me, where running friends have turned into lifelong friends. Running in a group taught me the essence of embracing the achievements of fellow friends and celebrating their successes rather than comparing.
When I decided to walk the entire length of New Zealand on the Te Araroa trail, despite all the uncertainties and questions, I felt good about the walk. I was able to bring in different elements of running into my walk, such as setting healthy expectations, listening to my body, knowing when to push for long days and embracing the walking community, which has helped me to get all the way from Cape Reinga to Bluff over 3400 km in four months.”

Day 0
Hi friends! After bicycling from Canada to Mexico and walking the Colorado Trail, it’s time for another adventure.
I’m walking the Te Araroa, the South Island of New Zealand. It’s 875 miles from Ship Cove to Bluff. I plan to end on Stuart Island just under the South Island.
Tumblr media
It’s both an old trail and a young trail. Old in the sense that there’s a well established system of huts and camping for multi-day trips; it’s also young in the sense that through-hikers only recently started walking the route end-to-end. I’m seeing 5-6 TA hikers each day; it wouldn’t surprise me if it numbers 20 in a few years time as the trail grows in popularity.
Also, I’d like to extend a massive thank-you to Keith and Linda, who welcomed me in Wellington for several days before I started my trek. It felt more like making friends than visiting. They showed me Wellington and its periphery from every angle (both literal and figurative); museums, day-walks, city and country, overlooks and cliffside, history and what it is to live there. They were beyond welcoming. It’s a lovely start to the trek.

The tussocks painted the mountainsides in shades of brown, blurring the transitions from dirt and rock to plant. Teddy turned this way and that enjoying the view he gained with every slight tilt of the head. Bears have been known to sit and enjoy views and Teddy is no different. The only thing that drove him from the beauty of this place was the thought of dinner later on down the trail.

Happy solstice and national hike naked day from Arthur's pASS national Park. This creek was just off of the Te Araroa on a side quest to Townsend hut. We were so captivated by the cascading waterfalls we ended up about 80 meters off trail without realizing it. When I pulled up the GPS I saw that the trail was directly to our right and thought"oh, its only 80 meters that way, should be just a few minutes. " 1.5 hours, and a whole lot of frustration later we finally arrived back at the trail leading up to Townsend hut. Never underestimate how dense the New Zealand Bush is my babes.
