Movie Review...The Fabelmans

(5/5) There is nothing like a good coming of age story. I knew from the preview that this was gonna be good but it turn out great. This was literally my childhood in a sense just without a camera. If I had a camera and watered my imagination even at a younger at I would be unstoppable.

This film was just a reminder to keep dreaming. This world, for some reason, is meant/built to crush dreams. Just like its mentioned in the film the opposing forces of art vs science, conventional vs non-conventional, dreamers vs "the stable 9 to 5" folks were illustrated and performed very well from our leads. That struggle, although seen between the two parents, is something that every creative deals with internally.

The performances were amazing. Michele Williams, Paul Dano (who is an absolute chameleon) and new to me, Gabriel Labelle did superb jobs. The way the plot progressed it ignited a gambit of emotions from crying to hopeful.

This might be my favorite film this year.

Young Sammy Fabelman falls in love with movies after his parents take him to see "The Greatest Show on Earth." Armed with a camera, Sammy starts to make his own films at home, much to the delight of his supportive mother.

"I am not fucking talking to you," you scream at billy as you walk towards steves car.

"What the fuck did I do," he yells following you.

"Fuck off," you hiss flipping him the bird and getting in steves car.

"I'm scarred to ask, what did he do," Steve questions pulling out of the parking lot.

reliving last Saturday broke your heart. He had been hooking up with your (only) friend other than the party and fruity four. He dumped her. Being the asshole he is, he couldn't let her down gently he broke her heart .

You explain this to Steve still seething.

"Damn," is all Steve says placing a comforting hand on your thigh.

"She went to stay with her aunt she was so upset," you are pissed. Steve can tell, red in the face, fists clenched.

Steve drove you to his house in silence.

Once you both were comfortable and watching a movie in his bed, "Does he know why you are mad," he places a kiss on your nose.

"No. And I am not talking to him until he finds out,"

Steddie + War of the Worlds

Ok so the Steddie brain rot is ever present but look I was watching War of the Worlds (2005) today and during the initial action we get this shot of an auto shop in the background called HARRINGTON’S so obviously it was all I could think about.

This part of the film is technically set in New Jersey but the protagonist spends the entire movie trying to get to family in Boston, and I personally love the headcanon that the Fruity Four would live in Boston as adults (being that it was one of the first places to legalize gay marriage in May 2004).

So just imagine! The events of the Upside Down are done, the portal is closed and Vecna is dead, the Fruity Four move to Boston and Steve and Eddie get married, opening up Harrington’s Auto Service where they both work as mechanics, with Steve doing most of the front of house customer interactions and Eddie being a whiz in the shop. They have a cute house, a couple of adopted rugrats, and of course a handful of stray pets.

And then one day, the aliens come...

also

another plot point in the movie is about how the aliens are trying to terraform earth to adapt to their plant life, which is red and viney and feeds on human blood - all very creepy but the point is - this bears a lot of similarity to the Upside Down vines. I just think that adds a fun element for our boys to flip over idk.

stranger things 4 and jaws

thinking about how in the episode the dive, steve diving with the flashlight and dropping it when he gets spooked by the gate is almost certainly a direct parallel to hooper dropping the flashlight and shark tooth when he's spooked by seeing ben gardner in his boat.

one of my favorite things about stranger things is its use of practical effects and callbacks to classic movies it took inspiration from.

stranger things was originally called montauk and intended to be filmed in montauk new york, the same place that jaws was filmed in 1975

anyways it's july fourth weekend, time for my yearly rewatch of jaws
