Afro-Latine Jewish woman maintaining cultural connection in an isekai comic
Anonymous asked:
Hello! Mixed Latin American nonbinary Jew here. I'm working on a, relatively light-hearted, isekai-style fantasy comic concept of an afro-latine Jewish lady who gets sent through a portal to a colorful scifi/fantasy land, inhabitated by various imaginary creatures sorta like in Alice in Wonderland. She gains magic powers and goes on adventures, working as a scientist researching the land's magical energy. (some of the local creatures she befriends are entirely original species, and some are inspired by my local folklore, but otherwise I try to avoid culturally coding the creatures since they're mostly nonhuman looking). The story isn't supposed to touch any heavy topics like antisemitism or racism, but I've read about the cultural problems in ""normie protagonist finds a new home in a funky fantasy world"" stories, f.ex. how Harry Potter's narrative basically implies that Muggleborns have to abandon their original cultures in order to successfully integrate into the very prejudiced but ""cooler"" Wizarding World. My original goal was to break the mold that escapism fantasy usually revolves around white protagonists adventuring in heavily Western-inspired fantasy worlds, and poc-coded characters are usually nonhuman creatures or racial stereotypes. However the protagonist girl in my story comes from a loving, latine-jewish human family, and while she regularly visits them on Earth instead of just staying in the fantasy land 24/7, I'm afraid that making her story be about being happy adventuring in a separate imaginary land filled with nonhuman characters might turn into an ""abandon your family and culture"" narrative. Are there any ways how I could avoid this? Maybe making the fantasy land's worldbuilding and designs more Latin American or Jewish inspired and thus resonate more with her cultural background, or making it clear that the land is not ""perfect"" and she still loves her family?
One of the first things that stands out to me is that you haven’t set her up to need to abandon her culture in order to make a life in another place. She has the ability to go home and visit her family, but I also don’t see any reason why, if she lives primarily in the fantasy land, she couldn’t be portrayed as practicing Judaism actively in her new home. It’s true that Judaism isn’t solely defined by religious/cultural practices, but it’s also true that religious/cultural practices are one of the most recognizable and most uniting elements of Jewish identity.
I think it might help in this case to think about Jewish practices in terms of communal versus personal: that is, what are practices she would need to seek out a Jewish community for, and what are practices she can do independently?
Does she control when she is able to visit her family? If so, visiting for Jewish holidays so that she can be at a family meal or holiday services seems like a way to highlight that she is just as connected to her family as someone who moved to a different city might be. If she experiences/has experienced the death of a family member or partner, going home to be with a Jewish community for shiva or to say kaddish on a yahrzeit is another touch (for readers who may be unfamiliar, Jewish mourning practices are intensely communal and are intentional about bringing the mourner into an active support system and slowly reintroducing them to the world, and as such a mourner is likely to spend this time somewhere where they can access and be supported by a Jewish community).
As far as practices she can engage with on her own in the fantasy setting, it would be nice to see her observing Shabbat, either in a traditional way by refraining from adventuring and instead engaging in hospitality and prayer between dusk Friday and sundown Saturday, or in a less-halakhic way if she comes from a Reform or comparatively-assimilated background, by marking Friday sunset with candles, blessings, and a good meal, even if she is intending to continue her research through the next day. She would hardly be the first Jewish person to live in a place without an established Jewish community, and a festive meal can be shared just as happily with non-Jewish friends if they’re griffons and fauns as if they’re Christians and Muslims.
Here’s one idea that I think would be hugely meaningful as a way of establishing both that she intends to make her home long-term in Fantasy World and that she intends to carry Jewish traditions with her into her new life: hang a mezuzah.
Think about it: a mezuzah is the visual marker of a Jewish home, as much to the resident as to a guest. When she is home from her adventures, in her garden cottage or enchanted tower or wherever she returns to between adventures to record and categorize her research, simply showing a mezuzah in the background instantly makes the point both that she is intending to stay, and that this is a Jewish space. If as time goes on she adds other Judaica items to her space, it can add to the sense that her Jewishness is present and alive in this world, simply because she is present and alive in it.
If she doesn’t have a settled space or if you’re not planning on setting any scenes there, having Jewish visual markers on and around her can help, too. For low-hanging fruit, maybe she has a silver Jewish Star or chai necklace that catches the light now and then, but since you’re going for a light, fun vibe, maybe she’s packing her adventuring supplies in a bright-blue vinyl backpack emblazoned with “Temple Shaarei Tzedek Junior Youth Retreat 1998” (am I old? I’m pretty sure there are adults reading this who were in Junior Youth groups in 2003, but I’m willing to bet retreat swag hasn’t changed that much).
I do like the idea of including Latin American and Jewish elements in the worldbuilding, especially as an intentional way to combat the cultural dominance of Western European folklore over fantasy writing, but because your character is from and has access to our world, you have the beautiful opportunity to carry real-world markers of Jewishness with her as well.
-Meir
I adore Meir’s answer, but then, I’m the kind of person to whom “enchanted tower with a mezuzah” as an aesthetic is so near and dear to my heart that I wrote a whole fantasy series about it. Couple of random suggestions: one thing I really enjoy is exposing my gentile friends to Jewish food—I love watching the absolute shock of delirium hit someone’s face the first time they taste my charoseth. Imagine this little bowl of chopped apples and walnuts, looking vaguely dirty because they’re soaked in cinnamon-infused wine, so it’s basically dingy beige slop….so that first bite of sensuous, deep sweetness is a huge surprise. Pick your favorite equivalent and imagine the first time a centaur or a winged princess or whatever other fantasy character tries it at your MC’s behest! (Feeding brisket to dragons would make a great name for…something…)
I don’t think you’re likely to do this anyway but since these are public answers: “fantasy world fun, Jewish upbringing a chore” is a narrative I would not feel at home in or care to read. But that’s a rather predictable remark from me anyway ;)
And of course I support the “the secondary fantasy world is actually Jewish” solution too, having one of my own.

Mentally lying on my bed and kicking my feet like a schoolgirl while joyously waiting for more Zack and Cloud sketchies ❤️ In your AU is Cloud completely conscious and aware when he first breaks out of his coma? Or is there a sort of in-between zone for awhile? If there is, is Zack overjoyed or worried out of his mind (or both)? Does Cloud struggle with allowing somebody to take care of him?
Sending you virtual hugs should you want them or a crisp and respectful nod of the head if not!
IM SORRY this ask only just showed up in my inbox but it says it's from march 24th?? tumblr killing me with daggers,,,, This is going to be a long one sorry!! I'll explain the stages of his coma first, and then the stages of waking up from it.
In the beginning, while they are on the run, Cloud is in.. something close to a catatonic state. He can perform basic instincts, such as blinking, swallowing, the small stumble-steps he's shown doing in gameplay, and making small noises. In my au/headcanon, this is because of the Mako keeping his body up and functioning in spite of his intense poisoning. Because of the Mako, his muscles also don't atrophy during this period. He has no memories from this era at all.
Tumblr media
After this, a little before the battalion but mostly after, his body begins to heal from his Mako poisoning. Which is good. but the lack of the access Mako leaves his body with far less functions. He begins to lose the ability to eat, becomes unable to even stumble, his eyes shut and don't open again. He falls into a full comatose state. Which, although it is very scary for Zack, and takes a lot more work and medical equipment, is actually a good sign for his healing. Fighting off mako poisoning this far is already rare.
Tumblr media
(In this segment, he is kept fed and hydrated through his IV, but he switches to an NG tube after he wakes up, due to the inconvenience of the IV and continued difficulty swallowing.)
His first signs of waking up were a few weeks before he opened his eyes. He began responding to stimuli, ears flicking at noises, hands tensing, eyes occasionally opening but not for long. It's at this stage that he also starts having nightmares, and becomes more aware of his environment. He has blurry memories from this era, but in the moment he was mostly just confused and distressed, and didn't process it. this took up most of the few weeks.
After some time, he began to have more moments of consciousness and rational thought. He could start to respond to simple questions or requests such as blinking or closing his hands. He only vaguely remembers this. It lasts a few days
when he actually began to wake up, initially he was incredibly upset and confused, not being recovered enough to actually process the situation. This resulted in him lashing out, not knowing where he was and initially not recognizing zack, he struggled and tried to pull his tubes out. This was the final stage to his waking up, only lasts an hour? possibly a few hours? and he was finally fully awake after this!!
When Cloud woke up from his coma, his body was incredibly weak from being bedridden so much. His muscles had atrophied severely over the few months, which put him in a wheelchair as they worked on him recovering.
Tumblr media
In this stage, he is mostly determined to improve again. He feels a lot of gratitude towards Zack for taking care of him so much, and a lot of frustration towards himself for not recovering faster.
Tumblr media
his next stage was crutches, he recovered his arm strength faster than his legs. He begins to pick up on zack overworking himself, but he's unsure how to approach it, and often ends up saying the wrong thing. (He still uses an NG tube in this era, but he begins to be able to eat on his own, so he doesn't have it in for much longer)
Tumblr media
His next stage is using a cane, which he ends up using for a long while. Even after his muscles have recovered, he maintains knee/hip pain for the rest of his life. He also has migraines and memory issues like in canon. At this stage, he begins to get frustrated with Zack more and more. He appreciates Zacks help, but feels frustrated with feeling like Zack doesn't trust him to take care of himself, and upset with how Zack prioritizes Cloud so much over himself. Due to these frustrations, he grows more confrontational. (<- comic linked is not 100% canon to this au, just an example.) Zack is overjoyed that Cloud is awake. He thought Clouds return to consciousness would help his fears and guilt ease, but for some reason he finds himself more worried than ever. He always backs off when Cloud says he wants space, but he finds himself worrying about what Cloud is doing now that he isn't able to be monitoring him all the time, and then guilty for feeling so worried.

Can you lease write the sfw alphabet for Twice Chaeyoung? I will be very grateful, thanks in advance
Chaeyoung Fluff Alphabet (Requested!)
a/n: of course I can do this for you, my dear! hope you enjoy this. sorry for being late on my post. ...it's been a long week 🥲
tw: none!
♡ Masterlist ♡
Tumblr media
Affection (How do they show their affection? What love language(s) do they use?)
Chaeyoung’s main love language is gift-giving - whether it’s art, lyrics, or a more tangible gift, she’s always got something thoughtful to give to you. Even if it’s as simple as a small trinket or matching phone cases, she loves to get stuff for you.
Beauty (What do they admire about their S/O? What makes their S/O beautiful?)
If you’ve got tattoos, she definitely has given them a second glance on multiple occasions, and she has run her fingertips over the ink whenever she needs to think or clear her head (as if you don’t distract her enough already). She also admires your independence when it comes to getting what you want out of life.
Comfort (How would they help their S/O if they were having a rough day?)
Chaeyoung lets you listen/read to some of her unreleased songs and music, especially if they’re about you, in order to cheer you up. She also likes to wrap her arms around you and bury her head in your back because you deserve to feel protected and loved.
Dreams (How do they picture their future with their S/O?)
Chaeyoung imagines you two living relatively remotely - in your own world, away from the prying eyes of others. Of course, that’s not entirely possible, so you settle on a small house a bit outside of a city center so she can have you (mostly) to herself while you can still enjoy life in and out of the city.
Equal (Do they tend to be more dominant or passive in the relationship?)
She’s more of a quiet dominant type - not the one you’d expect to be dominant on the first go. Chaeyoung plans dates and takes the lead in your relationship, but she doesn’t do it in an authoritative way. She takes your likes, dislikes, and opinions into consideration when she’s making plans for the two of you. She’s the first to initiate affection, too, although she can get a bit flustered if things get a little heated between the two of you.
Fight (Would they easily forgive their S/O after a fight? How would a typical fight go?)
She’s another member that I don’t see getting into verbal altercations with their partners. You and Chaeyoung may get into an argument and it may get intense, but one of you walks away before you say something that you regret. She’s usually the first to call you and ask if you’re ready to talk or if you need more time, and she’s open to either option.
Gratitude (How grateful are they for everything that their S/O does for them?)
She’s super polite, especially when it comes to your sweet actions towards her. Always says thank you when you buy her lunch or a small trinket that reminds you of her. She also likes to repay the favor with affection, dates, or buying things for you as well.
Honesty (Do they tend to keep secrets from their S/O, or do they share everything?)
Chaeyoung isn’t a secretive person, but it takes a while for her to open up about everything. She is an open book when your relationship with her deepens, so feel free to ask her about anything because she’ll happily tell you about it.
Inspiration (Did their S/O change them, or was it the other way around?)
Chaeyoung inspires you - she can sing, dance, rap, draw, write lyrics… it’s hard to not admire her abilities. You’re always there to support her whenever she needs you the most.
Jealousy (Do they get jealous easily? How do they deal with it?)
Chaeyoung does get jealous, but it takes her less time to step in and deal with the situation. She doesn’t mind wrapping an arm around your waist if someone gets a little too close for her comfort, or if they really aren’t getting the hint, a pet name or kiss on the lips will do.
Kiss (How often do they kiss you? Where do they like to kiss you?)
She loves to kiss you on the lips - they are short and sweet as a simple way to show affection. She also likes longer kisses where the two of you can get lost in each other. Chaeyoung doesn’t mind kissing your hand as a way to fluster you, but she gets flustered if you do the same back to her.
Lazy Day (How do they like to spend days off with their S/O?)
Chaeyoung likes to spend her days off at home with you. Even if you’re not in the same room or if you’re not doing something together, simply being in your presence is enough to relax her mind.
Marriage (Do they want to get married? How often do they think about marrying their S/O?)
Chaeyoung likes the idea of marrying you as a next step in your relationship, but she won’t force you into anything. Small conversations here and there will help gauge your interest in marriage, and she moves forward from there.
Nicknames (What do they call their S/O?)
Babe, baby, love, my muse
More modern nicknames are Chaeyoung’s preferences, but the last one is your phone contact name (her members tease her about this all of the time).
On Cloud Nine (What are they like when they are in love? Is it extremely obvious to others?)
Chaeyoung is a creative being, so her creative output explodes when the two of you are together. Her more romantic art comes forward with new life like no one has seen before. She also gets red in the face whenever your name is mentioned, so it’s pretty obvious that she’s head over heels for you.
PDA (Are they very upfront with their relationship, or do they prefer to keep things quiet?)
Chaeyoung doesn’t really mind PDA - it’s all up to you. If you’re comfortable with more PDA, she’s happy to kiss you in public. If you’re not, well, she gets all of you to herself at home.
Quirk (Some random personality trait that makes them an excellent partner.)
Chaeyoung likes to go with the flow of everything, so she’s an agreeable person to get along with. You tend to put her preferences above all, but she always has your comfort, safety, and affection in mind whenever she makes decisions.
Romance (Are they a born romantic ready to woo their S/O at any moment, or do they struggle to spark romantic moments with their S/O?)
Chaeyoung is a hidden born romantic - she doesn’t often display it in front of others, but when she’s in the mood for romance, you’re in for a treat. She isn’t the old-fashioned type of romantic, but she does buy your flowers and sweets if you’re having a rough day or if you need a pick-me-up.
Support (How do they help support their S/O to reach their goals?)
Chaeyoung supports you with her words. A gentle good luck, a sweet text on a rough day, or an end of day phone call is enough to motivate you to keep moving towards your goals.
Thrill (Do they like trying out new things to spice up their relationship, or do they prefer to stick to a routine?)
Chaeyoung likes to try new things with the two of you - new date nights especially. She doesn’t worry about them going well or not - it’s not about the experience for her, but the person she is with.
Understanding (How well do they know their partner?)
Chaeyoung understands you perfectly - you compliment each other as partners, after all. She can read your body language well and tell when you’re not feeling well, sometimes before you understand what’s going on yourself.
Value (How important is the relationship to the person versus other relationships and things in their life?)
Chaeyoung values your relationship just as much as she values her crafts and talents. She treats you with love and respect, as do you. Your relationship is one of the best parts of her life, and Chaeyoung doesn’t want to spoil that.
Wild Card (A random fluffy headcanon that you have about the relationship?)
Chaeyoung, the semi-romantic lyricist, has you as the focus of her writing at times. Sometimes you’ll appear in her drawings, but most of the time, your presence is felt in her lyrics.
XOXO (Do they like to kiss, hug, and cuddle you? How often do they do so?)
Chaeyoung loves to cuddle with you after a long day of work. She often kisses and hugs you, as much as you’ll allow her to, because it’s one of her favorite ways to show affection to you.
Yearning (How will they cope when they’re missing their partner?)
She sends you a lot of texts, calls you, and video chats with you if you’re available. She does go on with day-to-day life, but she wants to have you there, as much as you can be, while you’re away.
Zeal (Are they willing to go to great lengths for the relationship? If so, what kind?)
Although she might not say it, Chaeyoung would burn literal bridges for you. Of course, you’d do the same for her, which only makes her more willing to put herself on the line for you.

Nimblermortal's Covid Survival Tips 2023
because what's the point of having this if I can't make it easier for the next person?
First symptom for me was a mild sore throat. This started around noon; the next morning I woke up with no symptoms but feeling terrible, which I interpret as the medical "sense of impending doom" that is a real symptom.
Charmin toilet paper. This stuff is softer than Kleenex. Get you a whole roll and a shopping bag. Don't have a runny nose for a symptom? Don't care, it'll come.
Blankets you can kick on and off. I spent two days "cycling" - chills, fever, then lucidity. You need to be able to both vent and huddle.
If you are scientifically inclined: Keep a thermometer nearby. I regret not taking my temperature during the cycles, I'm really curious about whether I was running hotter or colder during the hot stages. That said, you will definitely not have enough energy to take your temperature during these stages.
Some sort of infinite podcast. It doesn't matter what it is. Honestly I recommend Critical Role even if you don't like D&D live plays. You do not care what is going on here, the point is white noise that you don't have to change. Make sure the device is plugged in. I could only nap while there was white noise happening - and when I say 'nap' I mean 'I don't know if I slept or not, just that I was face-down and some time passed'.
Advil. This will lower the fever. If you can, wait until the second day - the fever helps burn out the disease, but this only applies to the first 24 hours. But don't let the fever get too high. I ran a steady 101 F/38.3 C for two days, which is fine. You can take one every 4 hours up to 6 times a day. For me the best effects only lasted 2 hours and I was ready by the fourth (but also a stubborn pig who tried to hold out; there's no advantage to this after the first 24 hours).
Small dishes. People kept trying to feed me and I couldn't finish anything. Small dishes, plain foods, let yourself have the ability to win at meals. (Note: this may not apply to you, but I'm the sort of person who used to be sent to elementary school with a single small potato because the cafeteria was too noisy for me to eat but I needed to win at lunch.) If you're preparing just-in-case, you could put some in the freezer
Immune boosters. My aunt swears by Sambucol, which is elderberry and vitamin C and zinc. Zinc matters more if you are male. My take on the Sambucol advantage is elderberry taste good.
Non-caffeinated tea. Something that goes down the throat easy. I had a sore throat to start with, then after the cycling I've got a progressively increasing cough; warm beverage nice. (I also craved a masala tea in the middle of the cycling, so caffeine might be nice, but you probably want to let yourself sleep.)
Vicks vaporub. Apply directly to the forehead liberally once the coughing starts. The package says you can do this 3 times a day.
Don't worry about cough medicines unless you have one you trust implicitly. Mum says they're not very effective, so you want that sweet, sweet placebo effect.
Someone to watch over you. Partly to make sure you don't get it worse than I had. Mostly because when I'm weak and sick I get clingylonely and I need someone to assure me I am loved. I had the same problem with the vaccines - shivering under the blankets calling weakly for Hyacinth because I was alone and Sad. Honestly the covid has been less intense but longer.
Recovery time. Covid heals a lot slower than comparable sicknesses. Whatever you think your return-to-work day might be, add at least two days to it. (I thought I was getting away with something last Wednesday, tried to work Thursday, and survived for one hour.)
More recovery time. This thing heals very slowly. I haven't had symptoms in a week - aside from having to plan for being able to do single-digit numbers of tasks in a day. And 'digesting a meal' is a separate energy task from 'eating a meal' is a separate energy task from 'preparing a meal' is a separate... (No really, I had to plan energy expenditure for digestion.) At a week out, I am still having to make room for daily hour-long naps and activities interspersed with lying down - though at least now I can embroider with a TV show during these periods. Give yourself lots of time, even when it feels stupid.

💤🤒 for Alfred please? I need to know what is so different about him.
Oh you mean my heavy-handed, pretentious idea of Alfred's increased physical abilities as a symbol of the isolating effect of American Exceptionalism? lmaooo
💤 SLEEPING SIGN — is your oc a light sleeper or a heavy sleeper? how are their sleeping habits?
Alfred sleeps! He's human; he should sleep every night, but when he doesn't, he gets along a lot better than he should. When he's excited, he won't sleep and still be fine the following day, like he got a full few hours. He can go a long time on the very minimum. He's so charismatic, and Americans are such workaholics. He can play the pied piper to overworking everyone around him as he sets the pace and tone. He will realize it sometimes, but it makes him feel weird and lonely even when he's not coked up to exceed what he can do naturally. He will start showing exhaustion, especially emotionally, but when it comes to that point, it's well past the point of breakdown. And he's a heavy sleeper. Will lay down and conk out and just trust the world not to fuck with him because there's probably a firearm within arms reach.
🤒 FACE WITH THERMOMETER — does your oc get sick easily?
Nope! This is something I've gone with since he was hatched. That he's... unusual. His standard is the human peak of health, strength, and ability, well past the point he should be. It's not entirely a benefit because an overpowering immune system might keep him sick less, but it's going to make what he does get way more miserable. See stats about how much worse the Kansas flu and its cytokine storm was in the well-fed and fresh American farm boys than in half-starved trench veterans. Shitting his brains out, delirious and with a drip in his arm, Matt's just like... slightly feverish. People who don't know him very well probably think he's being exceedingly whiny over nothing, considering the effect his economy has on theirs. He's excessively whiney about some things but good fucking god, he is not a baby when he does actually get sick. It's actually that fucking intense. When he is ill, most of the time, it's brief. He's like the kids who will have wheezing and fever of 104 at home, and then when they get to the ER, they're just a bit pale and stuffy. Matt comes down to check on him, and it's a 50/50 shot of if he's just going to be tired and kind of dehydrated but mostly okay after spending the night on the bathroom floor with the running bull of the gastro runs or burning up so bad he couldn't find the aspirin with two hands and a spotlight. He's never just had some usual run-of-the-mill shit like a cold in his life.

i have my first ever dnd session next week and i’m. nervous-excited! any tips?
Oh, wonderful! I was about to demur and say I'm not an expert and take everything with a grain of salt, and then remembered I've been playing a game most weeks for most of the past decade and played two 1-20 campaigns and am now DMing another. So I guess maybe I do have some right to give advice?
Engage! Truly, this is the biggest piece of advice I can give you. You and your table are telling a story together, and it's a better story the more engaged people are. Be the kind of character who picks up plot threads the DM leaves dangling and chats with NPCs, be the kind of character who asks their party members about themselves, even if your charisma score isn't high. It doesn't take improv skills unless you're playing at a table that's recording a podcast or something, just a willingness to be curious, and it makes a huge difference.
Communicate. With your DM especially, but with your fellow players too. Let them know you're feeling nervous and might be a little shy but that you want to engage! If someone tries to engage you in roleplay, go for it and don't worry if you feel a little silly doing it. If you aren't having fun with an aspect of your character ("whoops, I should have taken a different rogue subclass") or the game ("heyyy, I didn't realize that killing wolves and elk would bother me so much, is there a plan to fight more magical monsters I'll feel less guilty about in the future?"), chat with your DM before it gets to be a bigger problem. And hopefully your table has chatted about triggers and systems to make sure you're all safe around that, a lot of tables do these days, but don't be shy about your needs.
Try to go with the tone presented! Hopefully your DM has told you what kind of game you're in, but a lot of table frictions can come when one player is playing Smeef Smeekle, jolly halfling weed dealer whose goal is to get into as much trouble as possible, and everyone else is playing A Team Of Heroes. Or, for that matter, when one person is playing Bluhdborne Pahth'ojenn, world's angstiest rogue, and everyone else is a fantasy k(obold)-pop band that fell into a dungeon (though comedy games do love a straight man, so that's mostly not fun for Bluhdborne).
Give kudos! When the DM or another player does something cool or creative, improvs a line that gives you chills, anything like that, let them know it! Either in the moment quickly, or after the session in some way. It can be a bit of an emotionally intense hobby, and it's nice to check in with your fellow players and tell them how awesome they are.
And last, some Common D&D Good Manners Things: in combat, have some idea of what your action is going to be before your turn comes around (some players make flowcharts, which I have never tried but might be your jam). Know your abilities as much as is realistic, and have descriptions of abilities and spells close to hand so your DM can ask you instead of looking them up. Take notes if you're playing longer than a one-shot, even if it's only a few words, both to keep yourself engaged and to give yourself the assist later when you need to remember whether this shopkeeper likes you or hates you.
Okay, that got very wordy! But really, just jump into the story, communicate with your table, and come at it with curiosity and collaboration, and it's hard to go wrong if your table is on the same page as you.
Enjoy!

Do you think any of the PAW Patrol members are on the spectrum? Because I HC Ryder and Rocky as both being Autistic (it's why Rocky hates water and Ryder hates brussel sprouts, bad sensory experience)
Particularly I think the brussel sprouts thing might be more of a combo of sensory and taste, if it was only sensory, Ryder would hate a bunch of vegetables altogether. What would tell me Ryder is autistic is mostly how his knowledge on engineering for his age is just-- Miles Tails Prower level of spawning new buildings and vehicles overnight. It's canon he's the one projecting, building and maintaining all their vehicles, we see him doing maintenance on his ATV pretty regularly and he taught the pups to inspect their own vehicles and do basic maintenance as well. Not to mention he projected, programmed (and regrogrammed several times) and built the Robo-dog from scratch. That implies he not only knows engineering but also has plenty knowledge in the field of Artificial Intelligence! And he's TEN.
But for Rocky I agree! It could very well be an autistic trait. He's also extra passionate about his stuff and both his creativity and ability to learn things of his interest are off the charts. I also picture him into the ADHD part of the thing, mostly on the HD part of it. He's one of the pups we get to see doing things on their own sometimes, outside of missions. Tbh Rocky only stops moving when he sleeps, and maybe not even then XD
Personally, I headcanon Ryder, Chase, Rocky and Zuma as autistic to some degree each in different ways. As for Marshall, my headcanon on him has nothing to do with any spectrum but with genetic health. Skye, Rubble, Everest, Tracker, Rex and Liberty (the other pups I know so far), I don't have anything on them.
With Ryder and Rocky explained already, let's go to Chase and Zuma, under the cut, post's getting long again, omg.
Chase would be this one "kind" of autistic person I've met at least a couple autistic kids like him before: They get one subject to hyperfocus on and it LASTS LONG, they just don't change interests. They might go and also focus on something that's very alike to the main subject too, but they won't switch their focus target. They're also extremely perfectionists, very hard on themselves, failure when working on something is NOT an option.
Chase is pretty much like that. We know he's intensely passionate about his job as their Police and Spy pup, he follows the rules, he enforces the rules, he does all he can to make sure the task will be complete and always gets extremely upset and/or worried with the possibility of failing or disappointing Ryder (or anyone else for that matter, but it's to a personal level when it's with Ryder), to the point it makes him lose his ground, driving him into anxiety and panic attacks on the most extreme cases.
As for Zuma, I think he's one of those cases in which the person also has this hyperfocus on something and sticks with it, but to him it's less intense than Chase, I mean, to be a cop you gotta study and learn a lot of stuff. Zuma's case is that one that looks more like a very intense hobby. Getting his natural passion for water as a Labrador Retriever and adding it to a greater level of interest on water related stuff, Zuma just put together the fun and the usefulness in his life. So, not only Zuma does the aquatic rescues for the Patrol out of convenience on being the pup whose breed actually doesn't mind getting wet, he also has fun and enjoys it all.
"But that's expected from a Labrador, isn't it?" you ask me. Well, I raise you the fact that Labradors are also usually extremely hyperactive dogs, but then we have Zuma who's... Totally chill. He's there in his spot, content, just enjoying himself. He's not constantly running or jumping around unless prompted to do so, he's playful but only when the others go out to play as well. Otherwise, he's just there, just vibing. Zuma is literally that pup who's there in his corner, vibing, minding his business, until someone else interacts with him or invites him to go do something.
He's literally the chill dude who will go out to surf on his own because he enjoys it and doesn't feel the need to interact with others unless necessary - doesn't mean he's rude, it only means he's vibing his own vibes and will gladly interact if prompted to do so, but doesn't usually takes the initiative because he's already happy in his world.
JUST A REMINDER, IT'S ALL MY PERSONAL TAKE on watching these characters and thinking way too much about their behaviors outside of missions and the vibes I get from them. Mind you, I might be autistic myself but I'm not diagnosed and most I know about it comes from research I've done years ago up to nowadays, the first time being when I wanted to create an autistic OC and didn't know much about it and didn't want to get it wrong to not be attacked over it.

My headcanon about the devil and how that effects his and Dice’s relationship
I have the head canon that the devil has bpd or borderline personality disorder. if you don’t know, what bpd is it is a personality disorder characterized by instability in mood, functioning, and behavior. Now it’s no surprise that the devil has serious issues controlling his anger but, there are other reasons that I think he may have this particular disorder. The biggest reason I think he may have bpd is looking at his relationship with King Dice.
Now most of this is just speculation/theorizing but I do have legit evidence for this as well. First off I wanna talk about is the whole number one nickname that King Dice and the Devil use to refer as King Dice’s place in the devil’s life. So a while back on twitter Luke Milton Drake the va for the devil did a q and a, and whenever anyone asked what his opinion on King Dice was he’d always refer to him as his number one, except for one time when he says the same thing except he adds unless he crosses me. Now this is interesting to me because this very much aligns with the canon of the show.
You see the first time we see the devil and king dice interact it seems mostly negative but, there are also somethings in that episode that also implies that they typically have more positive interactions with each other. There are also some implications that the devil doesn’t usually treat King Dice the way he did in roll the dice. The reason I ring all this up is because another symptom of bpd is that people with bpd tend to have the uncanny ability to switch between love and hate. This means that a person with bpd will treat that person like they’re the greatest person alive one minute but if they do something that upsets said person that person will seem like their mortal enemy the next. This kinda correlates with how he treats King Dice at the end of that episode.
Now something the devil said is that was King Dice’s first loss ever. Yet he has such an intense reaction. Now it could be summed up that he wanted cuphead’s soul. But at that time, he really didn’t seem as motivated to get it as seen in sweater luck next time. It also explains something dd said about the whole situation as to why the devil didn’t let King Dice get cuphead back to him in release the demons;
Tumblr media
I mean cuphead is the only time that king dice has failed to get a soul for the devil and yet the devil completely lost faith in him for that one incident. Which seems unfair since he cuphead was his one loss. This seems to indicate that the devil holds king dice in a very high standing which is confirmed by dd as well.
Tumblr media
It’s not until down and out do we see the devil act less hostile towards king dice. And that’s only after he proved his loyalty to the devil by still attempting to steal cuphead’s soul despite having his fame and really having no reason to do so than getting his soul for the devil.
Now the next one is totally a headcanon as we haven’t really seen the devil act this way towards dice but considering how the devil wants the admiration of others it can be assumed that he is jealous of dice’s fame. I bring this up because anther symptom of bpd is people with bpd can often express extreme jealousy over their partners. I also headcanon that his jealousy actually goes both ways he’s jealous of dice’s fame but he’s also jealous of how king dice’s attention goes towards his audience rather than the devil.
The next symptom I want to mention is mostly headcanon as it isn’t really show in the show but there is some evidence of this in the show itself is they can be overly critical of others. Using their criticism as a means to control. But cannot handle criticism themselves. Now we now that the devil has a hard time accepting criticism as seen in the devil’s pitchfork when he’s reading a review in the paper. But as for him being critical of King Dice the only thing, I can think of is how dd said that Dice was insecure and for all we know that has nothing to do with the devil. Also, how King Dice is eager to please the devil but, I don’t think the devil uses his criticism to control Dice I think he just really cares about his boss’s opinion of him.
The last symptom I am going to name is very interesting to me as it would contextualize some of the scenes between Dice and the Devil. Men with bpd lack emotional intelligence. They are unable to regulate or express their own emotions and can often misread the emotional feel of others. This little headanon of mine makes me think that the devil may not understand just how badly his cruelty affects Dice. Like maybe he doesn’t really understand how his opinion and approval really matters to King Dice. After all he seemed really surprised that dice was willing to go after cuphead’s soul despite the fact that he was fired. And hypothetically he wouldn’t understand how much being his number one actually matters to Dice.
This is all just speculation decided to post about it because I liked the idea and I noticed some similarities between the devil and my friend who has bpd.

Sorry if this is too out of nowhere but ive been thinking about how most of the normal slugcats arent really carnivorous outside of eating eggs and certain insects, exept for like gourmand (minimally) or saint (cannot digest any meat wether by design or evolution) and of course artificer and hunter. This makes me kinda theorize that yknow, slugcats arent normally carnivorous, and only gain the ability to eat meat through artificial means (exept for gourman they just do that i guess).
It also makes me theorize that maybe the reason why the two are able to do that is that they have some really corrosive acids/substances in their stomachs, for Arti those being in the form of garbage wastes microorganisms that make them explosive in general.
As for Hunter, well, maybe the reason they turn into the rot is because of the fact that they have the rot in their stomach if that makes sence? Like maybe they were made to have/grow some early stage rot growths in their intestines to be able to digest things they normally couldn't, or parts of their insides were given some rot genome, but wether intentionally or not, that system becomes unstable fast since it can become cancerous with the rot overtaking the body after some time.
My guess is that they're highly adaptable omnivores and lean towards various levels of severity based on environmental factors- It should be noted that insects and eggs are carnivorous food sources as much as meat is, its just a more accessible source. (And if you've ever seen the teeth on insectivores you would not doubt them. Look at the chompers on a shrew. A crickets worse nightmare) In fact if you look at the bulk of the basic slugcats diet pre-downpour its actually mostly small invertebrates- blue fruit is actually insect pupae, making the only vegetative parts of their diet bubble fruit, popcorn plants, slime molds. (Downpour added dandelion peaches, lilypucks, gooieduck (another mold), and glow weed. Its worth noting that many of these are added not just for world variety but to add items into the environment as tools- such as gooieducks not just being a substantial food source but providing a counter to wormgrass) (In this sense even saint can stomach some meat, as they can eat the blue fruit pupae and bug eggs) So thus the question is why pushes a slugcat to seek meat. It could be simply that its high energy payoff- most of the meat-eating slugcats get less energy (food pips) from eating small prey sources like batflies or blue fruit, so they turn to hunting larger prey. You have the higher energy cost of being an active hunter offset by payoff of actually being successful. It could also be that some slugcats simply lack the physiology (strong enough teeth, jaw strength) to tear into corpses and can only effective use small prey, even if they could eat meat successfully as scavengers. Tough hides can actually be a huge problem for scavenging animals if something else hasn't exposed the softer parts of the body, and this is why the first things lost on a corpse tends to be accessible and easy to take things like eyes, things like ravens need something with actual teeth to break the skin.
Buuuuut personally I think its a developmental shift- We see something like it in amphibian species. Its actually really neat stuff- basically, for a lot larval amphibians like tadpoles or salamanders they're naturally herbivorous and feed mostly on algae. However these young are generally limited in how much they can disperse until adults, which means competition for food can be very intense. As a result, in this developmental stage some will turn to predation- or to cannibalism. They grow larger then their vegetarian siblings, and in some species will grow larger jaws or new sets of teeth. They actually see this even behavior in species that are strict carnivores- some of the young are carnivorous but hunt unrelated prey, others specifically engage in cannibalism. Depending on what type of prey they target, the actually animal develops differently. Since we have the slugpups as a basis- who follow a diet pattern in line with Survivor and Monk, that can be assumed to be the 'basic' diet. But some individuals (likely ones in high stress, or low food environments) develop more intense predatory behaviors and physiology in adolescence. Genes can be environmentally flexible (polyphenism and epigenetics) and 'turn on and off' under certain cues, so for iterators it would probably be fairly easy to 'force' a specific type of slugcat.

Info Dump/Reference Page - Flux
warning! this will be updated as I share more information about Flux.
{ -Refs- }
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
{ ~~~✨~~~ }
Name: Sans Flux
Nicknames: Hound, A Husky, The Dog, (More To Be Added)
Pronouns: She/Her/They/Them/It || Rarely, He/Him.
Role: Unknown.
Alinement: Unknown currently.
Birthday: January 21st. (shh, that's my birthday too. :>)
Likes:
Whipped Cream - A Favorite/addiction.
Dislikes:
Quite literally any Gaster - Hate is on sight for them.
Powers/Abilities:
Form Shift - Active Skill - Flux can shift between an animal-like form and a humanoid one, although this considerably drains their stamina leaving them rather vulnerable for at least a day or two. hence the fact they normally choose one form and stay in it for months on end.
Copy - Passive Skill - being around another Sans for an extended amount of time will lead to Flux copying/adapting to the abilities of the other Sans, this can not be controlled. while it might sound cool, just because they have gained the ability temporarily, this does not mean they know how to utilize it, and if that ability has a side effect such as damaging the user, it will do so. the more contact Flux has had with said Sans in the past, the less time it will take to adapt and copy the ability again in the future, this can be stacked and can overwhelm the poor hound if too much is copied at once.
Gaster Blasters - Active Skill - Self-explanatory.
Bone Attacks - Active Skill - Self-explanatory.
Portal - Active Skill - Flux can open portals between different locations within the multiverse.
Magic That Makes Up Their 'Fur' - Passive skill - In times of intense negative emotions, the magic that makes up Flux's mane, tail, and ears can and will heat up to the point it becomes hot enough to burn or possibly melt whoever comes in contact with it, including Flux themselves. thankfully Flux emotions rarely get to that point, but if they do. throw them in some ice or snow, it will help them calm down.
Relationships:
Quil - Little Brother - b r o
Frisk/Chara - Help. - Help, a crazy human showed up one day, but can't get rid of it. it keeps bringing in random things that don't have an AU to call home(anymore). I give up.
Background:
lol U wish I got into that. all ya know is Flux's Gaster did something or another to tick them off.
Interesting notes:
has a weighted Axolotl plush, a notepad, and a pencil in her mane. somehow, all items are immune to the occasional effects of her mane.
they are easily bribed if someone has something they like, like whipped cream.
when calm, their 'fur' feels silky soft.
Flux is not really fond of being touched but, will tolerate it to an extent.
Ill give ya a snack of lore~ they were created as a weapon of sorts, a failed one at that. I mostly just want to have fun.

Hiii, can I ask for some Tenn x fem reader fanfiction where she's a singer and she often takes part in their concert and they have like really good dynamic, like you can feel how good are their relationship and how they know eachother (they're together but their fans don't know). Beside fans perspective - I would like to see I7 and trigger ones too
Keep Your Eyes On Me :: Kujo Tenn x Reader
A/N: sorry i made this needlessly angsty lol
.::.
Ryuunosuke was so happy for Tenn, practically watching you guys from afar practicing on a song together and exchange tips and opinions about how they should go about it.
Gaku was watching as well, though not as intensely as Ryuu. Tenn's fellow group member was happy for him, sure, but couldn't help but wonder why you and Tenn clicked so quickly and easily. Not that he was jealous or anything, it was just something that left him a little curious.
You had even managed to make Tenn of all people let out a genuine laugh every once in a while.
Though, maybe it had something to do with how you both were obsessed with professionalism and performing things the best to your ability. However Tenn seemed a smidge less prissy about things when around you and more relaxed and able to have fun rather than stressing about the assignment.
The first time the IDOLiSH7 members see you is at an afterparty of a concert. The two of you were woefully tired while Anesagi generously passed out water bottles. On the way to the party, the idol seemed actually a bit..nervous?
Tapping on his arm, you quickly try to figure what's wrong. The concert went great---better than great, and he should be proud of himself, so what could possibly be the matter?
Ryuu and Gaku were a little too excited to drink and recount their time on stage to notice that the two of you were lagging a bit behind them.
"Tenn, is something up? You were amazing as always." Gently, you slide your hands into his, looking in his pink eyes.
"..My brother's in there." He states, trying to look not as bothered as you know he is.
"Oh yeah, he's in IDOLiSH7 right? The center?" A smiles comes upon your lips in an attempt to quell whatever's ailing him right now.
Tenn nods without further input.
Being able to put 2 and 2 together, you realize he might've been nervous about him meeting you.
"Oh, I get it, you're worried he won't like me?" "No, I'm sure he will." He quickly responds this time. "Its not that I'm worried about."
"Then..what is?" Your hands subtly grip his soft ones in concern.
The idol goes a bit quiet again, shaking his head. "We can talk about it after the party." He takes your hand, walking into the room the party was being held. The noise from it was already clear to be heard from the hall.
.::.
You didn't think you'd find fans in the form of IDOLiSH7.
Hitting it off pretty well with the members since they already recognized you, you were kind of swept away with them during the party.
Mitsuki takes a playful jab, half-drunk. "Hey hey, is it true you and Kujo are dating each other?"
"Oh yes, we are." You smile, being significantly less drunk than everyone else, therefore not catching his tone as anything noteworthy.
That side of the room goes a bit quiet, having heard you. The atmosphere grew awkward and you frown, feeling like you've said something you shouldn't have.
Riku's eyes light up with joy. "Uwaa~ Tenn-nii's dating (Y/N)-san? That's amazing, congratulations!"
Tenn clearly heard that from the other side of the room, choking on his drink. He was planning to tell him himself once the party died down. It didn't help that their managers were there as well.
"I oddly feel a bit proud." Yuki snarks, running a hand through his hair. Re:vale had mostly been talking amongst themselves and Ryuu and Gaku while you were preoccupied with I7.
The pink-haired idol's eyebrow twitches, wondering what that's supposed to mean.
"Damn I didn't think he'd like..have it in him to date someone instead of finding a way for it to be the entirety of his fans." Yamato remarks, holding an empty beer cup in his hand.
Once again Tenn has a slight knee jerk reaction, glaring to Yamato next. Couldn't there have been a way to do this while they weren't drunk?
"I knew it! Tenn Tenn always smiles harder when talking about them on TV!" Tamaki grins as if he's solved a mystery.
"(Y/N)-san's quite talented and serious about their work, so I suppose I could've seen it sooner." Iori says.
Riku soon bombards you with questions, which Yamato and Iori have to shut down eventually since maybe he's prying a bit too much.
A few more teases are shared with Re:vale, Ryuu and Gaku before its time to leave. You exchange rabbitchats with everyone before you go.
.::.
"How do you feel about Riku?" Is the first thing Tenn asks on the drive back to his apartment
You turn to him with your usual smile. "He's nice. Not too different from how you described him, haha!"
"Right." Tenn says dryly, looking out the window.
Your smile fades a little, putting a hand on his thigh. "Something up?"
"Nanase Riku charms everyone no matter where he goes." Your boyfriend folds his arms.
A beat of silence comes between you, trying to process that.
"I mean yeah, that seems true." You nod.
"Right.." Your boyfriend was typically blunt and straightforward, making assumptions wasn't something you usually had to go through with him because he made his thoughts and opinions loud and clear. But there was a thought nagging at the back of your head.
"..Are you concerned about me getting along with Riku a little..too well?"
it was true that you had taken an interest in Riku, he was Tenn's brother after all and was considered a notable talent among the idol industry, but there was a slight ping in your chest that made you feel bad if Tenn were getting jealous.
On the other hand, jealousy isn't exactly the word Tenn would use to describe it. It isn't like you both don't already have thousands of fans. (who had already been speculating about the two of you dating on social media. Some were in denial while others treated it as if it were confirmed already) In fact, not being nice to Riku would be a dealbreaker for him.
Its simply that Tenn has spent most of his life trying to do things to appease Riku and keep him happy (which in itself turns into a mess from time to time) and he didn't want you to be wrapped into all of that. He feels a bit selfish over it, but its hard to deny now that you've met Riku.
He feels what the two of you have is special and dear to his heart, and doesn't want anything to come between you.
Instead of elaborating further, he simply tilts your chin up towards him, leaning in.
"Keep your eyes on me and only me. I'll show you something promising."

So because I want to record my progression of where I am in the story, I'm posting my impressions of the units so far. (Disclaimer: I haven't read many of the stories, and about half the knowledge I have is from osmosis and spoilers. The other half is actually reading wiki entries and the actual stories. So if these takes are inaccurate, that is probably the point XD)
Without further ado....
fine - unit of 2 rich kids who are sort of trying to be slightly less evil but kind of still are evil, one (1) theatre kid who is just there for the ride and his crush, and a butler with the face of an angel and the threatening aura of a ezekiel-accurate angel in disguise. Also another impression I had of it was one chronically ill idol stan with three of his idol crushes. But they're solid, if slightly flowery; not exactly my style but their songs are good.
Trickstar - literally my sons. Traumatised idiots who choose to continue to see the bright side with a slice of anarchy. They're all so dumb. Their leader looks straight laced but is more insane than his co-leader who is perpetually wearing the ^u^ expression (except when trauma slapped). The other two members are a camera-phobic gamer boy who is also a model and a guy who exudes reliability and sanity but is also kind of an insane workaholic with inferiority issues. I'm adopting them all and their songs are like…both generic but SO sincere you can't hate it.
Ryuseitai - Me when first meeting them: Awww! A power ranger themed unit! So cute! Me, after hearing stuff about the two senior members' lore and how they recruited their youngsters: (clutching my heart, trying not to sob/lose my mind) Aww! A power ranger themed unit! S-so cute! I would die for literally all of them…WHY. Such silly happy sincere tunes sung by such silly, devastating characters??? Found family, to me
Alkaloid - everyone here believes they are holding everyone else back with their psychological problems (Mayoi), disability problems (Tatsumi), ability problems (Aira), or culture shock problems (Hiiro). And yet they're the unit whose songs have mostly all been ones I absolutely loved. Which means the assembly machine factory idols Eichi's got going on are working and idk how I feel about that
Eden - A bunch of guys with severe family issues who probably have never read the bible (well, maybe Nagisa has). So, like, tw inaccurate depictions of the bible? Anyway, deranged quartet of a softie obsessed with cool rocks but really he has sort of a god complex, a guy with a perpetual :D who is as smart as he thinks he is but is also kind of oblivious to all of his other skills and flaws (and thus is a combo of terrifying snake and kind of someone you're sort of humouring because he's funny), a spoiled princess who might have a bit of a savior complex, and a dude who kinda just got swept along for the ride but is actually really fond of them. And it shows in their music.
Valkyrie - Just….theatre kids, who put the drama in dramatic and the intense in intensity (that's definitely not how the expression is used). They also have a very strange thing going on even though they're trying to be healthier, but I'm too afraid to ask. Unfortunately, though, they have some killer compositions and so many references to Classics and Things, not to mention their songs are genuinely good for those who want that quick theatrical vibe
2wink - Adorable twins that I was lured into thinking were the normal mischief twin duo trope but what in the actual ensemble were the writers DOING? They deserve at least half the cw/tw tags. Also, one of them is kinda like Trickstar (just wants to make things brighter) while the other one has schemes and will not hesitate to destroy you while giggling, yes. All that angst but they have such cheery tunes. Like, boys please….
Crazy:B - I mean, with a name like that….listen. You think it's the guy with the metabolism-related medical condition who has a dad implied to be accused of cannibalism and his freeloader who is a literal prince but also constantly broke that would be the most insane. But, no, we also have a fifteen year old assassin who has definitely killed and a guy who is literally both committing identity theft AND helping in witness protection. But, yes, their songs are fun, as is their dynamic. Also…Amagi brothers. Ough.
Undead - This is just…four urban fantasy love interests thrown into a unit. I'm not exactly sure what urban fantasy race Adonis and Kaoru are (though sometimes I'm inclined to think adonis is the protagonist who just kinda got swept along for the ride except he does have the vibe sometimes (aka casually kidnapping HiMERU)) but a vampire and werewolf are very obviously there. Really do love their rock and roll style, like come on (though I sometimes do think it'd be cool if they let Rei's love for jazz into their songs)
Ra*bits - Look. I love them. It really is just a single dad with one of the most messed up backstories doing his best. But like, also, leave them alone please?? The writers really just made them the damsel in distress character that makes Subaru go "oh, I have to take this revolution stuff seriously" and that's not even mentioning all the other stuff they seem to go through??? Like they do not belong in whatever genre Enstars is going for but they make it work but….let them rest. Songs not my style but they fit their vibe of "smile and spread joy" which works cause I do feel joy. Like Trickstar without the revolutionary goals.
Akatsuki - TBH, I'm still kind of wondering why these three (a warrior, a mangaka, and a tailor who used to be a delinquent) are still idols. I mean, they do have talent and traditional aesthetic is fire, and they're definitely sort of found family, but why still idols guys? That said, again, songs not my style but they definitely capture their aesthetic and vibe and that's always cool to me. Also, one of the members was raised in a Buddhist temple and helped with funerals, and I do not know enough about Buddhism enough to say if they portray a Buddhist accurately but given how they portray everyone else's quirks, it probably still has a giant dose of deranged on it.
Knights - HAHAHAHAHA. They're all insane. But they have talent and earned their place in the big three. But that does not make them less insane. That's all because I will go a bit barmy if I think about them too much. Silly, insane knights who enjoy hobbies like kidnapping (affectionate) and dancing/singing (will kill you in a duel)
Switch - Look….at heart, I can't hate these fantasy game isekai themed group. I enjoy their music because I do like the electropop remix/edm thing they have going on. And it DOES kill me that the only two 3-people units (Akatsuki and Switch) both have the dynamic of "a couple of parents and their beloved and most treasured cinnamon roll of a chaotic son." But like Valkyrie, I don't know what's going on with the senior members and am too afraid to ask, especially since they seem fine with it while their son with synesthesia cheers them on.
MaM - He is literally a cowboy. I - is there a thing with Japan and cowboys? And did someone at the writer's table see that samurai, Victorian thief, cowboys, and pirates post? Because somehow, the only member of this unit is all of them. A very stark contrast against his weirdly cheerleader/mom friend songs. I know he has mommy issues (mafia thing, I think) but.....son, are you okay?
Double Face - Yeah, okay, I love them. They might be the murder unit and I still have no clue to their formation but I love it. Put the Victorian cowboy thief samurai pirate and the child assassin together and you get secret agent type music that sounds like it could be in an old spy flick? How can you not love it?

So Marvel Rivals, that's an interesting surprise from nowhere! A new hero shooter with emphasis on the "Hero", but with a 6v6 format... huh. Interesting.
I'd do a full breakdown of everything shown so far but that feels like a job for someone with a usable computer. For now I'll just give my quick thoughts as a fan of both the genre and the IP.
On the Marvel side of things there's a good bit to be excited for already, with an interesting roster of picks already. Got a lot of obvious staples along plenty of choices that don't feel like cheap MCU tie-ins. Glad there's already a few X-men in, and genuinely very happy to see some characters I've literally never heard of. Again this mostly feels great because of how the MCU dominance has been overtly a hindrance to games like Marvel vs Capcom Infinite, where if a character didn't have a movie already out or in the works then they had a fat chance of getting in, even for series staples like Doctor Doom and literally any X-men characters.
On the gameplay side I can't say too much on the finer details, but it looks like individual characters bring a lot of interesting mechanics to the game. Doctor Strange can make portals, Hulk has his iconic leap and even has a transformation mechanic where he seems to need to spend some time as Banner before he can do the real work, and Loki has some sort of copycat technique. So... teleporting teammates, leaping and getting angry, duplication... yeah maybe these aren't as unique as they sound when tied to characters with a history of using those abilities outside of games.
There does also seem to be some sort of unique "team up" mechanic, like Hulk can lend Iron Man some gamma energy to power up his big laser blasts, or Rocket can scamper onto Groot's back in classic fashion. Not sure if these are unique interactions based on specific synergies, or if it's a more modular system, like first example coming to mind, Kirby Star Allies. Either has some balance or mechanical concerns, but it certainly sounds interesting.
The third person camera is also unique for a hero shooter, which makes me anticipate a less aim-intensive game and one more about movement, ability usage, and team play. Definitely a fair choice given the cast, plus I imagine it's compelling to actually see the iconic character you're controlling.
Now a big point I wanna address:
Will this be the Overwatch killer??
...no, probably not, sorry.
I think regardless of how much this game succeeds or OW2 fails, I don't think it's going to be much of a competition. Not as in Overwatch is gonna curb stomp it, but I just don't see the two games butting heads that much. Marvel Rivals seems to be going in its own direction with the finer details, even something as simple as first versus third person camera seems to inform pretty sweeping differences.
Plus, in the past I think calling any game the "killer" of the previous big thing in the genre. Looking to Overwatch specifically, people tried to call it the TF2 killer, which... I mean TF2 kinda killed itself trying to be like Overwatch, so bad example, but even with Valve's shortsighted incompetence TF2 never totally died, it's still got a solid playerbase and plenty of fans in spite of its rough post-2016 history, and with Overwatch existing completely fine alongside it. And "Overwatch killers" have come in the past, but never really meant much to OW besides some players deciding they preferred the other game more. Apex and Valorant are more just other subgenres with a "Hero" twist and not quite the same kind of game as OW, but Paladins was undoubtedly trying to fill that more specific niche. And... it didn't totally fail. No seriously, any game that still has its fans and active players, however few, is worth respect in my book.
I think that's the beauty of it, that multiple teams are willing and able to make their own approach to the same concept! That's how we get interesting new ideas, and move the subgenre forward in cool ways! To be blunt, ideally for me OW2 AND Marvel Rivals go on to coexist and both be great! If people prefer one over the other then that's fantastic, but the fact multiple options exist with their own ideas and approaches is so cool to me.
It's like with a similar subgenre developing over the past few years: platform fighters, or "Smash clones" for the outdated term. In the release downtime after the three most recent Smash games, we saw more and more teams try their hand at that uniquely accessible and interesting subgenre of fighting games, and it's been so exciting to see progress over time. We saw a good number of indie attempts after Smash 4, but after Ultimate we've been seeing bigger and bolder teams take serious attempts at a quality contender to challenge Smash. And while each new one garnering the title of "Smash Killer" is more and more of a meme, we're now seeing games that genuinely reach that level of polish and quality. Rivals of Aether 2 is personally the one I'm SO excited about in this respect. But I also can't help but think of the one platform fighter in recent memory that genuinely did Fail, at least in temporary dramatic fashion:
...Multiversus.
Yes, the hellish concept of a free to play fighting game, which prided itself on its grind culture. Now the utterly bizarre mess that is/was/will be Multiversus is sort of a unique disaster, but I can't help but imagine the worst for Marvel Rivals just because it shares that dreaded "f2p" label. Maybe it won't be too bad, but considering early screenshots imply characters need to be unlocked makes me assume the worst.
Frankly my biggest hope, however unlikely it is, is that these two games pressure each other to fix their individual shortcomings. Have OW2 Season 10 making heroes free make Marvel want to do the same, and have Marvel's 6v6 format make OW2 bite the bullet and revert to the same to fix its otherwise impossible to solve balance mess.
...no that's a lie, my biggest hope is actually that Wasp makes it in as a support and gets a skin based on her Earth's Mightiest Heroes look. Or better yet make that the basis for her default design, the designs are another promising point for this game so I have hope they can recognize quality.

Tumblr media
I don't usually go to tumblr to talk movies, but I know people are interested in this one because of Finn, so I'll attempt some thoughts more like I do other films (with irl friends, mostly).
My WYFSTW thoughts (in no particular order + a clip)
under the cut, not because I really "spoiled" anything but because I write a lot haha
I really enjoyed this, surprisingly. I kind of expected it to ring a little more hollow than it did based on the reviews, but I think the fact that I've spent a while seeing/reading all the interviews Jesse & Finn did (combined with the fact that I listened to the audiobook) made the characters feel more fleshed out in my mind than they might for other people on screen.
To be honest...this is basically a movie about mommy issues, and if you weren't trying to be understanding, it's really easy to write them both off as unlikable. And I won't lie: in a lot of ways, they well and truly are the most irritating kind of people—they are two sides of the same obnoxiously disconnected (and narcissistic) coin, where neither one of them is self-aware enough to realize how they come off, and both of them expect all of their good intentions to be met with open arms in spite of how much they overlook the wants, desires and interests of others.
That said...their inability to connect to others because of their self-absorption while still desiring deep connection, to me, is something i think everyone can relate to at least a little. The unspoken emotionalism of Ziggy and Evelyn—the way they started searching for each other in other people—was both really heartfelt and heartbreaking, and while I know Finn repeatedly said he felt like he related to Ziggy and honestly (in more remembered than present way) so can I. Somehow, I feel like I am in the space in life between him and his mother: still looking to prove yourself, but also aware of how intense and laborious and full of struggle the wider world can be.
Alisha Boe has the most withering gaze I've ever seen (good for her) and it plays so well into making you want to hug Ziggy despite you knowing he's such a pain in the ass in reality—and the scene between him and his mother in her little "enviro friendly" car where he's asking her for help becoming someone worthwhile only for her to unintentionally insult him up and down...god. You feel so much for Ziggy even when you want to fade into your seat trying to avoid his awkwardness, and Finn's ability to be deadly earnest and endearing doing the most insanely cringe things (lmao) is a power I have to commend him readily for.
Evelyn is much tricker. I would have hated her a lot if I was younger, and I think she deserves a lot less empathy than Ziggy in every situation we find her in (though, in so many ways, we realize they are the same...which makes their relationship all the richer. At least to me). Her attempts to project the relationship she wants with Ziggy onto someone else were insanely brutal to watch knowing how much Ziggy longed to connect with her...and the way Kyle wasn't the son she wanted, despite the one she wanted being right there.
Speaking of...Billy Byrk as Kyle was phenomenal. Like. Good enough to make me want to watch more of his movies, and earnest in a way I really wasn't expecting from a secondary character. He was a standout performance right alongside Finn (unsurprising that they are best friends who make movies and do projects together lol) who I definitely think carried some of the empathy you eventually feel for him and Ziggy in regards to Evelyn, which...yeah. I loved him in this.
All and all, it was a solid movie—flat out hilarious at times and full of that kind of upper middle class suburban nonsense you see in a lot of movies laced with emotions I wasn't expecting to feel. You definitely need to have a good gauge of reading expressions to appreciate this movie because a lot of its weight lives in the unspoken, but. I definitely think most people who enjoy indie / A24 and coming of age films will like it. I know I did.
Bonus thoughts:
the scene of ziggy in his room people were talking about was very tame, especially compared to what happened in the audiobook. Its a little awkward, but nothing you couldn't cover your eyes for like 10 seconds and avoid. It's not explicit in any way.
I cannot understate how funny this movie was at times. There were two older people next to me in the theater and we were all laughing consistently the whole 88 minutes lmao
For some reason, Ziggy performing for people and having it mean nothing irl felt a lot like being on Tumblr in some ways. NOT IN A BAD WAY, but maybe that made me extra empathetic to him LOL
FINN LOOKS AT ALL HIS LOVE INTERESTS THE SAME WAY. Its exactly the same with Ziggy with Lila as Mike with Will because that is Finn's "enamored with you" face, and it was intentional in both WYFSTW and ST. I will accept no arguments.
Prepare to be hurt if you have mommy issues I'm TELLING YOU RIGHT NOW because I felt pain and I don't even HAVE those 😭
...I am open to literally any questions about it / thoughts you may also have lmao my DMs are wide open :) also here is a little snippet of Ziggy wisdom I caught LMAO

how do you deal with going nonverbal?
I'm not nonverbal, just semi-verbal. There's times I lose my ability to talk completely, but at the end of the day I still have the ability to talk just fine when I'm not having a Moment, so I don't use the term "nonverbal" or "nonspeaking" since (from what I've seen) that's usually reserved for people who don't have the ability to talk at all ever.
When I have a Moment my speech gets a little fucked up and I speak in short and simple sentences since it's hard to articulate my thoughts but I can still talk, and it's not distressing to do so. I'll talk until I'm either fully verbal and articulate again (this might take an hour or so, depending on whether or not it was caused by something or if it was just random), or until I'm too exhausted and just don't feel like speaking anymore (this is rarer than the former).
Intense situations (whether it be emotional or physical) fuck up my ability to talk, but sometimes it also just comes on randomly. It also happens when I get physically excited--whether it's arousal or just adrenaline doesn't make a difference. I lose my ability to talk coherently during a root and I lose my ability to talk coherently while wrestling a crocodile or handling venomous snakes.
I also lose my ability to talk the more tired I get. If you're in the Discord you might've noticed me speaking in shorter and shorter sentences the later into the night it gets, or me mentioning that I wake up early but don't really come online until about an hour after I wake up. That's because I can't articulate my thoughts until I'm really awake. Need my morning coffee first!
To get an idea of what it sounds like, here's some idea of how I sound when I'm having a Moment (taken from messages I exchanged with a mate while I was half-asleep):
Yeah. Distressing. Varies from people to people. To bushie. ... Bogans yes. Many. Logan worst. Bushmen no ... Logan. Brisbane suburb. Crime big. Heaps bogans. All cunts ... World was worse place two hundred years ago. So many good things. Civil rights. Medicine. More peace. Better than it was. Less suffering. If bushmen going extinct is product. So be it. Not only person in world ... Have had time. No point sulking. Helps no one ... It happens. C'est la vie. Or something. Don't speak French
As you can see I can still talk, my sentences are just short and simple. Filtered. I give very blunt answers. Lots of yesses, lots of no's. If I'm giving a single "Yes" or "No" as an answer ("Yes.") then that's your warning that I'm having probably having a Moment. That doesn't mean not to talk to me! I'm fine to talk when I'm like this! My sentence structure is just weird because it's difficult to articulate my thoughts. That's not the same as not wanting to talk. If I didn't want to talk I just wouldn't be talking.
It's less embarrassing online since people I interact with know it's a thing (or at least are aware that Something's Up when I get like this) but it's more embarrassing in person and especially if I'm being intimate with someone since I can't talk well enough to explain why I'm suddenly unable to talk, so I usually give them a warning beforehand. "My head gets cloudy sometimes when I do this. Sometimes I can't talk. I promise I'm fine. If I want to stop I'll pinch you." That usually works, but there's been I reckon two times where someone didn't want to continue after that because they were worried about me having a Moment and not being able to tell them to stop if I needed to. That sucks, but I understand it. I wouldn't want it on my conscience neither.
Mostly "dealing with it" is just calming down (if I'm worked up) and waiting for it to pass or, if it's because I'm tired, going to sleep or (fully waking up if I just woke up). Like I said, it's not distressing at all! Just a mite annoying at most!
