dead and gone and buried

a/n: i'm deep in my gwaine brain rot right now so have a cute/angsty lil fic summary: Y/N looses someone she loves and leans on Gwaine in the darkest hours.
The early spring mornings were one of the highlights of Y/N’s day. As she meandered through the corridors of the castle, she caught glimpses of the morning sun slowly rising, bathing the white stone walls in orange.
Each sunrise brought with it a new day and a fresh start.
It also brought along one knight and a large plate of breakfast.
"What is it today, Sir Gwaine?" Y/N asked, walking down the corridor and toward Gwaine.
Gwaine was half dressed, cloak draped and folded over one shoulder, chain mail roughly tucked into his belt. He held a large plate in one hand, gloves in the other.
"I believe it is pork with leftovers from last night," he replied, coming to a stop beside Y/N. "There's some apple, some... I think potatoes?"
Y/N peered at the plate. She nodded. "Potatoes."
She reached out and snatched one off the plate, dodging Gwaine's pitiful attempt at slapping her hand with his gloves.
"Have you not got things to be doing?" He asked, shielding his plate from her.
"Oh, I have a lengthy list," she replied, "but I would much rather be taunting you than helping people get dressed."
Gwaine chuckled. He tossed his head back, letting his hair fall out of his face. "I should probably go and get ready."
Y/N nodded, gently sweeping her foot across the floor. "Do you need a hand?" She asked, looking up at him.
"Uh..." Gwaine looked at himself, taking in his mismatched state of dress. "Please," he replied, his smile growing.
Gwaine leant across Y/N and placed his plate of breakfast down on the window sill. She pulled his cloak from his shoulder and took his gloves.
Y/N held Gwaine's clothes as he untangled his chain mail from his belt and awkwardly dragged it down over his head. She watched, angling her eyes down when Gwaine looked up, flicking his hair out from under the shirt.
He reached out and took his cape from her, his fingers brushing against the back of her hand. In one, rather dramatic, swoop, he put the cape around his shoulders and pulled the buckle tight, letting the cape settle around his shoulders.
With a smile, Y/N slapped the gloves into Gwaine's hands. "Good morrow, Sir Knight."
Gwaine bowed to her, sweeping his cloak out behind him. "Good morrow, Lady Y/N."
Y/N giggled. "You better get going unless you want our wonderful king to yell at you."
"He yells at me all the time," Gwaine replied, pulling his gloves on. "It'll be nothing new."
He leant across and pressed a kiss to Y/N's cheek. Gwaine stepped back and nodded at her, turning on his heel and walking down the corridor.
Y/N shook her head, a fond smile on her face, and began walking the opposite direction.
//
"Gwaine, if you spent more time watching your opponent, you'd spend less time on the floor." Arthur yelled, stabbing his sword into the grass.
Y/N laughed softly as she walked past. Gwaine was, indeed, lying sprawled on the grass, his sword flung miles away. He rolled over onto his stomach, his eyes catching on Y/N as she passed. She waved to him and he awkwardly waved back to her.
When she got a chance, Y/N always went for a walk down past the training ground. Partly so she could watch Gwaine try and partly because she could breathe in the fresh air and stroll amongst the upper town.
There was only so much pretentious behaviour Y/N could take from those in the castle before she lost her mind.
"Lady Y/N?"
Y/N turned her head, coming face to face with a flush-faced, out-of-breath messenger.
She nodded. Y/N patiently waited as the messenger fiddled with this bag, struggling to find the piece of parchment he was meant to give her.
Eventually he found it, whipping it out the bag with a flourish. He handed it to Y/N and, before she could even unfolded it, ran off back into the upper town, dodging through the crowds.
The wax seal popped off easily. Y/N unfolded the letter, all ready knowing what it would say.
She'd been waiting for this letter for months. Ever since her father had retired from his role as secretary of state because of his declining health, she'd been waiting for the letter that summoned her home to be at his death bed.
'It's time to come home.'
There it was, written in black ink and folded into a square.
"You alright?"
Y/N jumped, dropping the letter and stumbling back over a tiny pebble on the ground. Gwaine, who'd made her jump in the first place, caught her by the waist and stabled her, setting her back on her own two feet.
"Sorry," he said, wincing. "I thought you'd heard me."
"No, I hadn't," Y/N breathed, still recovering. "I was -"
"Reading?" Gwaine held out her letter to her. "Is it your father?" He asked as she took it, clutching the letter to her chest.
Y/N had confided in Gwaine about her father's health long ago. He'd been the one to watch out for him during council meetings, escorting him back to his chambers when he'd been to unwell to stay any longer.
Gwaine had been a silent supporter for Y/N as she tried to cope with her father and her job in the castle. When her father had retired and returned back to their home village, Gwaine had held her hand as she watched him disappear through the gates.
So it was with no surprise that Y/N turned to her best friend and said "yes... he most likely won't survive the week."
Gwaine took a step closer, reaching down and gently grabbing Y/N's hand, cradling it in his.
"When are you going?" He asked, lowering his voice as a group of knights passed by, laughing loudly.
Y/N shrugged. The wind picked up, blowing her hair in front of her eyes and she brushed it back, ignoring the headdress she'd pinned to her hair.
Gwaine reached up with his other hand and caught her hand. He brushed her hair back, untangling it from the headdress. His hand lowered, brushing against her cheek before returning to his side.
"It's an hour or two away," Y/N said softly, "so either before nightfall or first thing tomorrow morning."
"I'll come with you."
"No, Gwaine, I can't ask you to do that -"
Gwaine cut her off, putting a hand to her cheek. "I offered. I don't want you to be alone, that's all."
Y/N nodded, swallowing back the tears building in her eyes. "Thank you," she whispered.
//
Atheyers was quiet as they rode into the town. The townsfolk had begun lighting lanterns and shutting windows, settling down for the night.
Gwaine helped Y/N down from her horse and, hand in hand, they walked up to the big, wooden timbered house, that was Y/N's family home.
Inside the atmosphere was sombre and almost stifling with grief. For a moment, Y/N thought she was too late. But then she saw her brother rush down the stairs and her panic eased slightly.
"You're just in time," Isaac whispered, embracing his sister tightly. "Come on." He turned, looking at Gwaine. "You too, Sir Gwaine."
The room was quiet, lit candles providing warmth and a calming light.
Y/N walked in, hiding behind her brother for a second. She peered round and saw her father lying in bed, looking pale and fragile.
"Y/N's here, father," her brother whispered.
Y/N glanced behind, searching for Gwaine's reassuring gaze. He stood in the shadows, quietly watching. When he caught her gaze, he nodded and gave her a reassuring smile.
She stepped forward and crouched down beside the bed. "I'm here, father," she said softly, taking his hand in hers. "You can rest now."
//
Bird song greeted Gwaine the next morning. He'd fallen asleep in a chair that sat outside the bedroom, against the wall of the corridor. He stretched as he stood up, rubbing his face.
The door creaked slightly as he pushed it open, peering inside. Y/N was asleep beside her father, still curled on the floor, her head resting on the mattress, arm folded under her head.
Gwaine knew that her father had passed. There was a new, peaceful silence in the room broken only by the birds tweeting outside.
He approached Y/N and knelt down beside her, placing a hand on her shoulder. "Y/N," he whispered, shaking her gently. "Hey..."
Y/N lifted her head, looking up at Gwaine. "He's gone."
"I know. I'm sorry," he whispered, stroking her hair.
Y/N sat back, leaning against Gwaine's chest. He shifted, kneeling behind her, pulling her into his lap.
They sat there for a moment. Y/N held Gwaine's hand tightly and closed her eyes.
//
They gathered on the shore of Lake Riveia, watching the boat containing the body of Y/N's father burn.
Y/N stood at the edge of the shore, her brother next to her. Dressed in black, she looked like a shadow in the afternoon sunlight.
Gwaine stood with the other knights, capes blowing in the breeze, heads bowed. Arthur stood along side them - not as a king but as a knight himself.
After a while, those gathered began to walk back to the castle, until Y/N and Gwaine were all who remained.
"How are you?" Gwaine asked, coming to stand by Y/N's sad, his shoulder brushing against her.
"Coping," she whispered, her eyes still fixed on the burning boat in the distance. After a moments pause, she turned to face Gwaine. "Thank you for being here."
Gwaine raised his eyebrows, slightly surprised. "Of course," he replied. "I wouldn't be anywhere else."
"I know but... I'm grateful for the fact you even stayed to check on me," Y/N replied, chuckling sadly. "Not many do."
"Not many love you like I do."
Y/N smiled, looking down at the ground. Gwaine reached over and placed his finger under her chin, gently guiding her head up until she was looking at him.
"I love you, Y/N," he said softly, tucking her hair behind her ear. He rested his hand against her cheek and Y/N leant into it. "I love you with so much of my heart, none is left to protest."
"That's good," Y/N said, giggling quietly. "I don't think I could cope with you denying your feelings." She paused, pressing her lips together. "I think I do enough for both of us."
Gwaine gently turned Y/N by her shoulders until she faced him. She looked up, staring into his eyes, suddenly remembering just how beautiful his brown eyes were.
Slowly, Y/N leant forward, her eyes closing. Gwaine pressed his lips to hers, his hands resting on her hips. Y/N raised her arms, threading her fingers through his hair, untangling the curls.
They pulled apart, resting their foreheads together.
"I finally have my own knight," Y/N whispered, shoulders shaking as she giggled.
"And I my lady," Gwaine replied, pressing another kiss to her lips. "Forever and always."
Y/N stepped closer and kissed Gwaine again, holding him as tightly as she could.

Rosy Cheeks / Gwaine Imagine
Tumblr media
Request: MERLIN!!!! I would DIE if you did a Merlin drabble/imagine etc. Gwaine has been the loml since I was 10 and would LOVE something to do with a headstrong maid or tavern barmaid reader and him. Like he is so flirtatious and she doesn't think he's being genuine until Gwen points out the way he talks/looks at her. FLUFF GALORE. This request is 100% self-indulgent but I couldn't resist! Your writing is so lovely and I love that you cover so many fandoms. Do what you want with this, sending good vibes :)
I literally cannot believe I haven’t written for Merlin before I think I cried for about three months after the finale aired Christmas Eve ahh but thank you lovely that’s very kind! <3
Clocking in at nearly 4,100 words, this is the longest oneshot I’ve ever written, and I’m knackered! So please, if you like this, do let me know as this took me a solid 3 days to write!
(I do not own Merlin or its characters, all rights go to creators. Gif credit goes to @babinicz.)

You would know the light tread of Gwaine’s footsteps even in the darkest of dungeons. It was familiar, comforting, and most of the time most welcomed from your best friend, but also incredibly infuriating.
It had already been a long enough day: your boss had started to become distinctly unimpressed by the sight Gwaine gracing his doorway and taking your attention away from serving the drinks until far into the night at every opportunity he could find. Between the large crowd of travellers who had nestled their way into the long tables, spilling their drinks on the lone romantics and starting brawls with the for-hire thugs, sweat was already beginning to cloud your vision. It didn’t help that it had been a warm spring day outside; the verdant fields of Camelot blooming to life with fresh grain and wildflowers cropping their borders rolled past your vision every time you went to stoke the already pounding fire at the left edge of the building.
Wiping your forehead with the front of your apron, you blow out a sigh as you collect the next round of empty, splattered bowls and chipping mugs, and head back towards the counter, counting down the minutes until Gwen arrives and you can finally roll into bed for some much needed sleep. It doesn’t take very long for all your hopes to be dashed, as the phantom pursuing you like immortal love appears within your line of vision.
‘What’s a pretty maiden like you doing in a dank place like this?’
The face of Gwaine peers over the edge of the tavern’s chipped table like an eager chipmunk: all bright smiles, rosy red cheeks, and a mischievous glint in his eye as he stares straight at you. The crimson tint of his tilted head, as red as a cardinal and twice as beautiful, alludes you to the fact that he had probably already spent half the night in romantic pursuit of various poor patrons at the tavern. The slight pant in his breathe as he spoke clocked you to the fact that it was he you had heard pacing around the tavern, scheming up some new hairbrained joke to swat your way. The droplets of ale he wipes from his stubble with the back of his glove clues you in to the fact that he’s been here, watching you, for a while, waiting for the perfect time to strike when you were most busiest, and, of course, when the tavern owner was watching you with a scowl from the barrels.
Little did you know, in fact, that Gwaine hadn’t quite been wasting the night away waiting for the right moment to strike. He had been pacing with his mug by the doorway: half of him fiddling with the rose he has bought off the old lady outside, preparing himself to finally muster his usual courage and give it to you, and the other half preparing to run back to Camelot and go hide in the armoury till the end of time. He had heard an avalanche of pillows being thrown behind Arthur’s door as he had walked past the corridor earlier, and the familiar sound of Merlin’s wincing cry of exasperation as he apparently dropped the King’s breakfast on the floor, so he was sure his dear friend would join him in hiding away in the crevices of the castle. Gwen could smuggle them food up from the kitchens, and he’d make Percival keep watch out the door to make sure you would never catch sight of how reticently self-conscious you made the usually so blatant knight.
Yet most of all, Gwaine had spent most of his time shaking his head with a breaking grin, strutting up and down and up and down the entrance and getting in everyone’s way. It was only when Gwen decided to stop in during her daily visit to walk with you back home after your shift, that she finally managed to grab his arm and pull him away from the growing mob of irritated and drunk carousers.
You thump the empty mugs down by his left elbow, grinning as a few drops slosh out and drip over his arm. ‘Gwaine, with all my heart I love you, but if you’re in need of someone to annoy I’m sure Sir Leon has finished with target practice by now.’ Sighing, you lean over him to grab a rag from behind the counter, ignoring the muffled shouts of patrons and wolf whistles to grab your attention.
He seems to flush at your words, shaking his head until his hair splays out over his forehead like a warm dawn’s soft and curling mist. He looks down at his feet, then back to peer at you from behind the safety of his fringe, his eyes burning just as fervently as the gold light of daybreak. It takes him a moment to fall out of his love-struck stupor. In mock offence, he raises a hand and grabs his heart, taking a false stagger back on his heels. He prays you can’t see how fast said heart is pounding in foolish, all encompassing, body devastating, stricken hope. ‘How your words wound me, Y/n! Besides, Leon smells like old goat instead of daffodils and mead. Also... I may owe him a few gold shillings.’
You turn to him with an incredulous look. ‘A few, again!? Already?’ Gwaine just shrugs, and smiles all the brighter as he notices you becoming enticed by his shenanigans. If he could just keep you by him for a few moments longer, perhaps he would find the strength to stop stroking the petals between his gloved fingers and hold it out to you like a proper ‘knight in shining armour trying to woo his true love’ would. ‘I may have said that I could win in a sword fight against Arthur - and I nearly did! If only his trousers hadn’t magically fallen down in the middle of it.’
You press the back of your hand to your nose to try and hide your snort, and Gwaine laughs pleasurably at the sweet sound. Waving away an obviously intoxicated customer who was now slamming his glass up and down on the counter to try and get your attention, you turn away from your now seething boss to look at the blithe knight resting beside you. ‘There is no way that happened. Even I would have heard news of that by now. News seems to travel faster than the crow flies in Camelot.’
Picking up your rag, you turn to move away from the man, but a gentle hand encircles your wrist before you can even take a step. ‘No, please’, he starts with a hitch in his throat. ‘Please don’t go yet. I haven’t finished my tale! Besides... it ends with me fighting a dragon, and being declared the true king of all fair maiden’s hearts by a wizard.’ With a tilted head watching your exasperated feelings flash across your face like zings of magic, Gwaine begins to chuckle through his words. His earthen eyes are dream-like as they trace the outline of your eyes, then the dip of your nose, and further to the bottom curve of your lip, as if you were the brightest beauties of all the heavens rolled into one being.
‘You promise you’re telling me the truth’, you ask, rolling your eyes while trying to hold back your own laughter.
Gwaine unintentionally drags his teeth over his bottom lip as he raises his head up again, wetting the edge of his mouth with a final slight lick of his tongue. His gaze drops for a moment, before sheepishly coming back up to glance at your growingly delighted eyes. His fingers dance a final dainty circle around the pulse point of your wrist, before coming up to draw a quick X in the air above his chainmail. ‘For you Y/n, I’ll even cross my heart.’
‘And you’re definitely not here just to cause me more trouble’, you accuse with a jab at his chest. ‘This isn’t another one of your hairbrained schemes to make me lose my job so I can come work up at the Castle kitchens, is it?’
For a moment, just a flicker across his usually radiant face, Gwaine looks crestfallen at the accusation. Whether it was due to the fact that you would think of him in such a way, or the thought in the back of his head that he wanted nothing more than to spend every day working in as close a proximity to you as possible, neither of you are entirely sure. He quickly recuperates himself again, and with a shake of his head and a quick wink in your direction, he’s smiling fondly at you once again. ‘You’re very lucky I like a girl who has a bit of bite with her bark, otherwise you may have just broken my heart.’
You groan, but the man standing in front of you, plain as day as he holds his love out to you on a silver platter, is still hopeful in his smile.
Distracted for a moment by a weary patron politely tapping you on the shoulder and enquiring as to whether he can purchase some late night grub from this tavern, you don’t notice Gwaine playing back and forth with his hand. After you’ve answered the gentleman, you swing back towards your best friend, who looks as if he’s been caught with his hand stuck in the cookie jar. Wide eyed, he swings his right hand back behind his back and coughs innocently.
‘What in all the kingdoms are you doing?’, you ask him as you narrow your eyes, trying to figure out why the knight looks so daunted.
With a quizzical frown, you grab onto his shoulder and try to peer around the chainmail engulfing his torso, but with every move you make he matches it with a swivel of his head. His smile never falters, but the edges seem to quiver a little... almost as if he were embarrassed? As if he were bashful at being caught hiding something from you. You drop back down onto the balls of your feet and raise an eyebrow at him, both deeply puzzled but also determined to find out what secret the man, who usually gushed every little detail of his day to you as soon as you met, could be hiding.
‘Now now’, he chides, ‘it’s not polite to ask a knight what he’s hiding behind his back. I could be holding keys to the dungeon, sent on a secret mission by Gaius to infiltrate the castle and release Merlin, especially after Arthur locked him up again for spilling shoe polish all over his pretty new tunic. Or, it could be a powerful artefact, or a relic I won on my quest to slay, you know, that dragon I told you about.’ You lift a hand up and gently slap the side of his cheek a couple of times. Gwaine raises his eyes to the ceiling, chewing the inside of his cheek in humorous anticipation.
‘Or, you could have injured your hand giving Sir Elyan a piggyback ride to the jousting arena again, and don’t want to tell me about it. Or, even more likely, Arthur managed to knock you on your bottom during your sparring match, and you landed on your wrist like the big fool you are.’
Gwaine scoffs, opening his mouth quickly, his tongue ready with a new witty retort to your brazen appraisal. Before he can reply, though, Gwen has nearly shocked you out of your skin by seemingly appearing out of thin air to grab the side of your arm. With one hand resting on your bicep, her other comes around your other shoulder, and she whispers quietly in your ear: ‘Y/n, may I speak with you for a minute before you finish?’ You nod, and with a final teasing smirk at the knight, you allow Gwen to guide you away towards the fireplace, and through the milling crowd of tipsy drinkers and cheeringly clamorous guests. Gwaine watches you recede through the throng with a pang in his heart, taking the flower out from behind his back and looking at it forlornly as he begins to run his fingers over the velvet petals.
‘She loves me’, he murmurs, letting them fall through his fingertips. ‘She loves me not.’
If only he could stop flirting for one moment, then perhaps he may have had the chance of being truly happy. With a final sigh, he places the flower between his fingers and heads back out into the crowd.
Thankfully for you both, Gwen had been as good-hearted and observant a friend to you both as she had ever been. Once she had finally managed to persuade Gwaine to approach you, she had settled herself into a corner of the tavern, to watch the confession she knew in her heart was coming. In fact, you had an incredibly wonderful network of kind friends, as Gwen would soon divulge to you, once she had tucked the two of you back into the corner and away from the ears of any passing gossips.
‘Y/n, she started’, letting go of you and glancing back in Gwaine’s general direction with an apprehensive peer. ‘Why on earth aren’t you flirting back with the poor man?’
You stare at her in bemusement. ‘Gwen, my dearest friend’, you grab both her hands within your own, and familiarly begin to rub your thumb over the back of her knuckles. ‘As long as I’ve known Gwaine he’s flirted with any breathing, moving woman. For instance, I remember a certain someone being wooed by said knight only ten minutes after he had set foot in Camelot!’ You swing your joint arms between your chests, and give her a comforting look. ‘He’s a dear, dear friend, just as you are, but he’s not serious Gwen.’
‘Oh Y/n, that was different’, Gwen swings back and forth on her feet, ducking her head as she thinks of the best way to relate to you what poor Gwaine had been so poor at trying to tell. ‘Sir Gwaine may be a flirt, but he loves you.’ Before you can even open your mouth to laugh, or shout, or groan, Gwen has gripped your fingers tighter and pulled you another step towards her. ‘And! And, he’s in love with you. How can you not see it?’
Your mouth stutters for a moment, the flickering of the settling fire warming the growing blush on your cheeks until you wish you could fade back into the shadows. Falling backwards, you trust your friend to catch your fall as you lean against the cobblestone wall and stare, gobsmacked. Gwen only nods fervently at your speechlessness, and you can tell by the seriousness lining her face, by the eagerness in her eyes, that she’s telling the truth.
‘Wh-what?’, you finally manage to muster out after a few seconds shock. ‘We’re... we’re friends. We’re friends! He treats me like a friend, like, like he would talk to any of the knights, or Merlin, or, or you!’
‘That’s not true’, she replies, disappointed.
‘How do you know?’, you ask in a whisper, afraid to hear the answer.
‘I have eyes! Besides, Merlin told me.’
‘About my crush on Gwaine? That little tattletale-’, you begin to rile up, but Gwen could tell from the way you gnashed your teeth and shook your head that you weren’t seriously angry at your friend. You were just disappointed: devastated, even, by the thought of your friends using your infatuation as a source of teasing.
‘Not about you!’, Gwen was quick to correct. ‘Although... that may have come up, just a little.’ She pinches her fingers together and squeezes her eyes shut in apology at the brimming look of annoyance you give her. ‘More about Gwaine though! Apparently, Sir Leon told him in the strictest confidence’, you laugh at that, knowing your friends too well, ‘that every time he’s passed by the armoury in the last two weeks during his nightly rounds, he’s heard Gwaine’s voice echoing inside, practicing to the shields and crossbows how he’s going to admit his feelings for you!’
That... that startles you. With a languid blink, you take a moment to think, before asking Gwen: ‘did Merlin tell you what he was saying?’
Gwen places a finger to her chin. ‘I believe it was something along the lines of: ‘my dearest Y/n, from the first moment I was graced with your company, I knew that you would be the only creature in all the kingdoms to hold my heart, forever.’ Sensing your silence, as you dip your eyes and ponder over her words, your friend continues. ‘Besides, Leon’s not the only one! I heard that Gwaine admitted to Percival, I believe during one of their quests, when they were faced with the Dorocha and of uncertain death, that Gwaine admitted his love too. I think while they were roaming the castle, to try and lighten the mood he told Percival that the first day he had met you in this tavern was the best day of his life, and how he wanted to live so he may return to it once more.’
‘See!’, you finally spring to life, throwing a dirty glance at an old drunkard man who was leaning precariously over his table to lean his ear closer to your conversation. With a final swat of your rag in his general direction, you turn back to the intense conversation at hand. ‘He only admitted he missed the tavern!’
‘No Y/n, if you let me finish, he said that he wanted to return as he had made a promise to himself, all those years ago, that he was going to marry you one day. Do you really find it no coincidence that as soon as Camelot was saved, you were the first person he sought out?’
‘He did hug me rather tight’, you murmur, crossing your arms over your chest and chiding yourself for being so blind. ‘Oh Gwen, how could I have been such a fool too? How can I fix this? He must hate me for the way I’ve treated him.’
Before you can finish your musing thought, Gwen has stepped forward to wrap you in a tight hug, squeezing your shoulders before letting go. Sliding her arms down to your waist, she shakes her head. ‘No one could ever hate you, Y/n. And the solution is simple. Go tell him.’
Glancing out across the tavern hall with worry lines deepening your eyes, your heart is relieved to spot Gwaine still milling about; he seems to be entrenched deeply in an arm wrestle with some young, muddy looking farmer, but you can tell his heart isn’t really in to win. Over the course of your conversation with Gwen, he’s spent every excusable reason to glance over his shoulder and back at you. To make sure you were safe. To make sure no one was hassling you. To make sure Gwen wasn’t going to break your heart by indulging his true feelings for you. To make sure you weren’t about to push through the crowd and run out the door, disgusted by the idea. His eyes met yours: aflame, tense, deep set in their worry, and he’s quick to look back down at his elbow again.
How could it really have taken you so long? To realise that his bitten, plump lips, his rosy cheeks, his overwhelming joy was all solely from the thought of you?
With a resolute gasp, you allow Gwen to gently push you off in his direction, despite how thunderously your pulse was flickering through your body. You nod, and let your feet direct your path, not giving yourself a moment to think over the implications of the incoming interaction. After what feels like an eternity of treading water, you come to an uncertain stop behind the three men. Although Gwaine is still chatting with the green-clad man he had been wrestling innocently with earlier, the other crop gatherer seems to have fallen asleep on the table, his crossed arms pushing his mug of ale until it rested against his nose.
Mustering determination, you quickly prod Gwaine three times against his cape, taking a worried step back as he quickly turns to look at you once again. ‘You just couldn’t stay away’, Gwaine remarks with a warm smile when you finally garner the courage to approach the table he’s currently leaning over. ‘I can’t blame you, not many can.’ With his thumb, he points over at the young man gently beginning to snore on the opposite end of the table. ‘This poor lad grew so tired of my wit and charm he had to close his eyes for a bit.’
He stands up, giving a final wink and a nod at his short-lived companions. His tall frame hunches over you as he steps forward, blocking out the rest of the flitting candlelight from the east end of the tavern; the front of his chainmail brushes against where your hands are bunched into the coarse linen of your apron, sending a jolt flying along your fingertips. He seems to be casing you into his very being, that same soft - so soft dopey smile breaking like dawn across his face as he appraises you from above.
Before he can start whittling off again, and you lose your garnered nerve, you break the laden silence by asking Gwaine the most important question you could think of in that moment.
‘What were you hiding behind your back?’
Gwaine seems taken aback by your query, visibly raising his eyebrows as he begins to bite his bottom lip again. You know him to well to think him puzzled: he’s worried, scared that Gwen may have told you the truth, and you have come waltzing over to tell him off, and in doing so, cleave his heart clean in two.
‘Do you - do you really want to know?’, he asks uncertainly, taking the flower out from where he had stored it in his belt for safekeeping, before placing it behind his back once more. You’re swift to reach around his waist, skirting your pointer finger over the bone until you meet his hand. He gives it to you easily, his palm warm and laden with scars as he allows you to unfurl his fingers.
‘I think... I think I already do’, you reply with a hitched breath, enjoying the way Gwaine has taken to rubbing the tips of your knuckles as you press against his palm. Before you can lift the flower, though, he’s already using his free hand to tuck a strand of hair back from your ear. With a careful precision he’s obviously spent many nights over the years practicing, and doting on within his dreams, he tucks the stem of the flower behind your ear.
‘Well, I’m glad’, he states, dropping the back of his own knuckles down the side of your cheek, until he’s cupping your jaw. Your pulse point races against his skin as he dips his head down with a flash of pearly whites, not satisfied until he feels your nose bump against the tip of his own. ‘For I fear it has been my quest in life to find you, and love you till the end of days.’
‘Hmm, and a knight must never fail’, you mutter between laughter against the side of his mouth.
His voice is stricken: as serious as you’ve ever heard the rebellious man speak, and you know he has choked trying to speak these words many times before.
‘I don’t intend to.’
A rapturous wave of applause seems to fill the serene air (even your grumpy old boss manages to roll his eyes and pound the table a little), so dreamlike in its warmth, as Gwaine leans down fully to kiss you. His arms wrap around your waist, seeming to pull you in their vice like grip impossibly close to his chest, until the air you both breathe seems to be one and the same. You can feel him smile against your top lip as he tenderly places a second, lingering, caressing kiss against it, before pulling away to look at you.
Before either of you can breathe out a sigh of relief, though, you’re interrupted by the sound of Gwen cheering from the fireplace. The two of you finally break out in laughter, then, doubling over together and holding onto your stomachs as Gwen covers her mouth with her hand in embarrassment.

⭑ You’re his only family (besides the Knights)
⭑ He would tell you about why he’s alone, and what happened to those he loves without hesitating. It’s not information that he keeps secret.
⭑ Forming a bond built on trust and honesty
⭑ You were great friends with Morgana when she resided in Camelot. Your family were jewelers and Uther wanted a new bracelet for her upcoming birthday. However, unbeknownst to Uther, your family were also sorcerers. Magic was imbued in the pieces; protection or to attract love. Whatever the intent, your family was able to imbue it into the jewel.
⭑ Your grandfather had grown up with Gaius, so you knew the healer well.
⭑ Having magic yourself and hating Uther
⭑ Stealing his clothes
“Is that my shirt you’re wearing?”
“Yes, do you want it back?”
“No, it looks better on you.”
⭑ Annoying the other Knights with how much he talks about you
⭑ Gwaine likes to rest his head in your lap
⭑ A LOT of flirting
⭑ He likes teaching you about weapons and how to use them. His biggest fear is you getting hurt, and that he cannot protect you.
⭑ Gwaine said “I love you” first
⭑ You and Gwaine married after a year of being together. He knew he wanted to marry you after 2 months. But didn’t feel as if it was the right time.
⭑ It was a lovely ceremony. Arthur wanted to pay for a lot, and Gwaine refused. So they compromised and Arthur paid of only part of it...
⭑ You spend a lot of time with Guinevere, and you give her some of the jewelry from the shop. She doesn’t know the wearer is granted protection, only you and Merlin do.
⭑ Oh and speaking of Merlin, you guys are best friends. It’s because you can both be honest about wielding magic.
⭑ Teasing each other
⭑ He would never get tired of you
Relationship tropes:
Endless Support & Love

⭑ Gwaine’s passion sweeps you off your feet. He’s all hands and lips; a blur of want and need.
⭑ Equal dom/sub - he likes a woman who can put him in his place
⭑ Very loud and very vocal. He forgets to be quiet a lot, and you have to put a hand over his mouth.
⭑ Likes to put his fingers in your mouth while you suck on them
⭑ He’s a big fan of doggy and pushing you up against a wall
⭑ He doesn’t mind period sex
⭑ It’s quite common for sex to occur after arguments
⭑ He likes to praise you, with his hands, mouth, and words.
“You’re doing so well for me, princess.”
⭑ He has a high sex drive
⭑ Likes it when you pull at his hair
⭑ Especially when he’s going down on you -
⭑ And he is very good at doing that. It’s like he knows exactly where to put his mouth, tongue, fingers ...
⭑ Has had experience, I mean look at him. Who wouldn’t want Gwaine’s attention, let alone his lips on your body??
⭑ He likes to fill your mouth with his cum, and watch you swallow it
⭑ Gwaine is a fan of quickies, but they don’t happen very often. Even though he’s a high-energy guy, he knows that quickies rarely get you off - so he always wants to be fair

-
As you looked out over the valley, you sighed "Well, either we missed them already, or we're ahead of them."
Gwaine stood beside you as he looked around. "We can't wait around for them, we should just continue on our way. We'll meet back at Camelot either way."
Nodding, you turned and looked ahead into the heavy wooded area "I really wish we hadn't lost our horses."
Gwaine nodded as he began to walk ahead "But at least we still have our legs."
You let out a soft scoff, "Might not by the time we make it back to Camelot."
Gwaine smiled as he looked back at you for a moment. He had been dying for a few moments to be alone with you, and now that you had gotten split off from the group, he had more time than he expected.
It felt like almost too much time, as Gwaine felt an uncommon anxiousness in his gut. It was not common that someone made him nervous, but you most certainly did.
"We could talk, to make the time go by faster." Gwaine suggested, as he stopped to wait for you to catch up to him.
"Talk about what?"
He shrugged lightly. "Tell me about yourself."
You let out a soft laugh that made his heart flutter. "We've known each other for months now Gwaine."
He grinned. "True, but that does not mean I know everything about you. I only know the basics, tell me more."
You opened your mouth before you shook your head with an uncertain laugh. "I don't know what to tell you, it's all pretty boring."
"Oh, I doubt that." He said with a soft smile.
You smile in return, feeling your heart hammer in your chest. You weren't expecting to be alone with Gwaine, and now he wanted to know all about you? You had never felt more unsure of yourself.
"How about this, I will just ask you questions, and you answer."
"Alright, but do I get to ask you questions too?"
He nodded "Of course."
"Alright then." You smiled, wondering where this conversation would end up.
"Okay, let me see," he mumbled "Why did you pick Camelot? Of all the placed you could have moved to, why here?"
You thought about your response for a moment, as you and Gwaine headed deeper into the woods, and closer to Camelot.
--------
As the mid-day sun hung over head, you and Gwaine sat by a small river, taking a break from your long venture back to Camelot.
"So, you've been in Camelot a lot longer that I have" Gwaine said as he sat down beside you. "But I hardly see you with anyone but the Knights, Merlin, or Gwen."
"Yes? And?"
"Is there no one else in your life?"
You felt an uneasy tightness in your chest at this, but you smiled casually. "Is that not enough people?"
He smiled and shook his head. "I meant romantically."
You felt a bit of tension rise between you, but felt it was surely one sided. You shook your head as you pulled your water canister from your bag.
"Ah. Well, no, there is no one romantically in my life." Standing, you began to head to the river, unaware of the hopeful gaze on Gwaine's face.
"And no one, headed, in that direction then?" Gwaine asked, watching your profile.
You shrugged your head a bit, "I don't know. I tend to be 'blissfully unaware' of that sort of thing, or at least Gwen says so."
Gwaine let out a soft laugh, and you felt your heart beating heavily. As curiosity set heavy on your mind, you asked softly, while trying to sound as casual as you could.
"What about you? Who are you with?"
He shook his head. "No one."
You looked at him with a bit of surprise, he was unable to miss. He rose a brow a bit. "I know I'm labeled the palace flirt, but that doesn't mean I'm always in a relationship."
You let out a soft chuckle. "I thought you liked that label."
He shrugged softly. "I didn't mind it at first, but, I don't want it to become my reputation. The person I have actual feelings for might not think to kindly of me if it is, they might not trust me."
You felt your heart sink a bit as you turned, looking out at the forest, not wanting Gwaine to see your face.
"So you like someone then? In Camelot?"
Gwaine stared at you, wondering if that was disappointment in your voice or if he was just imagining it. "Yes, I do."
"What are they like?"
Gwaine's lip curled up a bit before he spoke. "They're amazing. They're smart, witty, talented, too kind for their own good really. Attractive, more than they're willing to admit. They're much too good for me, really."
You looked down at your feet but smiled softly. "They almost sound made up."
He let out a soft laugh. "I would think so too if I didn't know them. I don't think they realize half those things about themselves though."
You wondered who it was he was thinking of. Someone you knew? It didn't really sound like it. Maybe it was someone he met in the town.
"Sounds like you really do like them."
Was that a hint of jealousy? No. Surely you understood he was talking about you by now.
"I do. Very much."
His voice had grown softer, and you felt a jealousy in your chest, but you tried to push it away. You should feel happy for him. Happy that he has found someone who makes him feel that way, even if it couldn't be you.
Swallowing down your feelings, you turned back around and made your way over.
"So, how long have you been with them? Do the other Knights know about them?"
Gwaine frowned as he watched you set your water down, before you grabbed a rag and went back to the water. You really didn't realize he had been talking about you. He almost laughed.
"I'm not with them."
"Oh." You looked back at him, clearly confused. Wiping your face and hands with the damp rag, you steadied your voice. "So, do they know? How you feel?"
He shook his head softly as he watched you closely. "I don't think so."
"Whats stopping you from telling them?"
He repressed a smile as he cleared his throat and began to stand up. "I've tried, but I don't think they understood what I was saying. Or, they just didn't understand how it could be them I had feelings for."
'Sounds familiar' you thought quickly as you stood. "Maybe they need a more obvious sign."
You mentally kicked yourself for encouraging him, all you were doing was pushing him further away from you.
Gwaine made his way towards you, "An obvious sign? Like a kiss?"
You almost choked, "Uhm, I suppose that would be obvious" you let out a short laugh. "But, you can't just march up to them and kiss them out of the blue."
Gwaine stepped up to you. "So I ask first?"
You tilted your head with a soft shake, "Yeah, then you'd at least know for certain how they felt."
Gwaine continued to stare at you as he nodded softly. A small smile spread across his face as you felt your heart flutter.
"Alright then." Taking a step closer, he was right in front of you, his eyes drilling into yours. You felt your breath catch in your throat. "Can I kiss you?"
As confusion turned into denial, following by realization, you opened your mouth slowly, and spoke softly. "You were talking about me?"
His lips stretched into a grin as he nodded softly. "I thought I was being obvious."
You felt your face grown hot as you failed to repress a smile. "Gwen was right. I am-"
Gwaine's smile turned into a grin as you both spoke at the same time.
"Blissfully unaware."
You giggled softly as you looked down, feeling almost overwhelming embarrassment, confusion and excitement.
Feeling Gwaine hook his finger under your chin, you looked up to meet his gaze. "I was certainly right about one thing. You really don't realize any of those things about yourself do you?"
"I don't really think about myself at all." You admitted.
His smile faded a bit, before he replaced it again with a flirty gaze. "That's alright, I think about you enough for the both of us."
You let out an almost startled giggle as you felt your ears burning hot.
Keeping your eyes locked with his, you felt him gently caress your chin with his finger. "So, about that kiss?"
Your heart was hammering heavily in your chest, as you found it hard to breath. Smiling, you nodded your head.
Gwaine slowly lowered his head, as his lips met yours gently. The soft kiss was deepened as Gwaine brought his hand to the back of your neck and pulled you closer. You brought your hand up and set it against his chest.
Slowly parting, your eyes fluttered open meeting his again. You both had soft smiles on your lips.
"I do trust you, by the way." You whispered softly. "Label or not."
His smile widened, "You really are too good for me."
You shook your head lightly. "Agree to disagree."
Letting out a soft breathy laugh, he pulled you into another kiss, deeper and more passionate than the last. You wrapped your arms around his neck, as he pulled you flush against him.
xx End xx
I had no idea what to write next, so I just ended it lol. Hope you enjoyed it nonetheless <3

Tumblr media
Waking up to the feeling of a damp cloth being dabbed at your forehead, you slowly blinked open your eyes. The top of his shirt hanging open, sleeves rolled up, his hair slightly dishevelled, Gwaine looked tired. Attempting to wriggle into a more comfortable position, you groaned at the much your entire body ached.
“Hey,” Gwaine said softly, a small smile forming as he looked down at you, “Don’t try and move, sweetheart, you’re still very sick.”
You wanted to cry, your head felt like it was about to explode or topple right off your body. Your neck was as stiff as a board and your throat felt like gravel. “How long was I-” you began, croaking like a frog before he shushed you.
“You’ve been asleep for three days,” he explained, “Gaius thinks it should only be three more before the poison is fully out of your system.”
You frowned at that. Poison?
“At the feast,” he said, knowing just what you were thinking, “Sir Arnold’s serving girl put something in the wine. Apparently, it was intended for Arthur but it didn’t reach him funnily enough. Leon and Harry’s wife, Lady Evans also drank some.”
“I-” you started, not really having any thought of what to say. Your eyes began to water and hot tears began down your cheeks.
“Hey, hey, hey, ssh,” Gwaine whispered, reaching out to wipe your cheeks just as fast as they were wetted, “it’s okay now, you’re alright. Gaius had all the ingredients on hand and administered the antidote within the hour. More than long enough to make you better.” He continued to brush your cheek even after you stopped crying.
Putting the rag down on the cupboard at your bedside, he pressed a chaste kiss to your forehead and rose from his chair. “I had Merlin prepare you some soup in case you woke,” he said as he fetched the bowl from the table. As he returned with it, he lifted the spoon to his mouth to taste it. You frowned.
“Can’t be too careful,” he said, sitting back in his chair. He shuffled it forwards until his knees were pressed against the bed. Taking another spoonful, he held it to your lips. “Just have as much as you can, darling.”
Still relatively warm, it went down smoothly and helped the dry ache of your throat. You had a couple more spoonfuls until you swallowed too fast and began to cough. Gwaine was quick to put down the bowl and spoon before helping you sit up against the pillows.
“I’ll pour you some water.” He took the jug from beside him and filled the goblet that sat next to it. Sipping it slightly, he waited a moment before handing it to you, gently helping tip some into your mouth for you to gulp down. When you put your hand up to say you had enough he put it back.
“Why do you keep doing that?” you breathed, voice steadier than before.
“You’re not having a sip of anything again until it’s passed my lips first,” he vowed, his tone suggesting he was joking but his eyes saying otherwise. Reaching out, you took hold of his hand where it rested on his knee. He gripped your fingers tightly as you smiled at him.
“Have you eaten today?” you asked. He looked down for a moment, chuckling at your ability to be concerned even while you were the one who had so recently faced death.
“Not yet.”
“And when did you last sleep?”
“Not since you’ve been unwell,” he admitted, preparing himself for your disapproval.
“Go to bed, Gwaine,” you whispered, “there’s no sense in us both looking half-dead.”
He leaned forward and kissed your brow. “You’re a fool if you think I’m letting you out of my sight until you’re up and walking around.”
“Don’t be cruel to yourself,” you said, staring up into his eyes, rubbing your thumb along his knuckles, “you’ll end up bedridden if you don’t eat and sleep. Finish the soup.”
“That’s for you, my darling,” he said.
“I’m not hungry. Finish it and come ‘ere.” You patted the empty spot on the bed next to you.
“Only for you, my love.”
Not bothering with the spoon, he tipped the bowl back and drank the rest of the soup. When he got up to take off his boots you noticed his sword leaning unsheathed against the wall nearby. Just in reach, you thought which made your heart sink. He grabbed it before he plodded around to his side of the bed. After putting it on his bedside cabinet, he climbed onto the bedding and inched closer to you.
“Expecting a hostile intruder?” you asked.
“You never know who’s gonna try to take you away from me,” he said, wriggling into a comfortable position beside you. Retaking your hand, he brought it to his lips and laid a kiss to your knuckles before holding it to his chest. Shoulders pressed together, you let out a deep breath, eyes falling shut again.
“I’d never let them,” you murmured, “you’re stuck with me.”
“Good.” He was silent for a while before adding: “I thought I was gonna lose you. For a while there it didn’t look like… Gaius wasn’t sure you’d make it.”
Shifting with a slight wince, you turn to look at him better. You tucked a piece of hair behind his ear and he turned his head towards you.
“I’m okay, Gwaine,” you said, “I promise. It’s okay now. I’m safe.”
“No thanks to me,” he breathed, the fear in his voice breaking your heart.
“You didn’t know, how could you have?”
“I don’t know, but I just sat there for a minute. After you fell out of your seat and I had you in my arms. You were so fucking still and I just… I couldn’t move. Percival grabbed you and ran to Gaius. If he’d been any slower, if I’d- you would’ve died because of me.”
Scooching closer, you let go of his hand and wrapped your arm around his middle. He lifted his arm to put it behind your back allowing you to press your cheek into his chest. “You were in shock, it’s not your fault.”
“But it would’ve been.”
“No,” you insisted, “whoever put the poison in the wine is to blame, no one else.”
“Hmm,” he hummed, not entirely taking your word for it now, “never again. I’ll protect you from anything and everything, whatever it takes.”
“You’re too good to me,” you said, kissing his cheek, “my handsome knight.”
“You’re not so bad yourself, sweetheart,” he said, “now go back to sleep, you need to rest.”
“You best go to sleep too.”
“Of course,” he said, “Sweet dreams, darling.”

Sir Gwaine x gn!child!reader (!!PLATONIC!!)
summary: reader is the cousin of Sir Gwaine. their father, Gwaine's Uncle, was became abusive to the reader after his wife cheats on him. the reader escapes and finds a group who takes them in. the group is killed, reader is injured, and barely stumbles into the city before passing out.
warnings: child abuse, murder, death, slight gore, injuries, angst, mentions of blood, serious!Gwaine
Gwaine's father and yours were brothers. they served as knights under the same king. Gwaine's father was slain in battle, leaving yours devastated. after overcoming his grief several years later, he married and had a child. but it shortly started to seem like his grief was still there in his subconscious. waiting. after discovering that your mother had cheated on him, that grief took a new form: anger. your mother had left, so the only person he could take that anger out on was you.
you had endured until you were twelve, when finally you built up the courage to run away. your father was away, scouting for your king, as there was a threat of an enemy nearby. you took advantage of the opportunity. the previous day you had discovered peddlers in your village. they were travelers, and would soon be out of town. you told them your story and they agreed to take you with when they moved.
their next destination was Camelot. perfect. you had a cousin there. a knight serving King Arthur. from what you had heard, Arthur was a fairer king then yours was, so surely, if your cousin was one of his knights, he had to be a good person.
you packed few things, merely the essentials. you met the travelers in the spot you decided on and departed on your journey.
your freedom was short-lived, however. you were only a few days into your trip when bandits came upon your group. everyone was killed, and there was an arrow in your side. you had barely made it inside the city when you passed out from the loss of blood.
~~~
you woke up in an unfamiliar bed, with unfamiliar sheets, and a distinct smell of herbs. you looked around. this was unlike any place you had seen before. your side stung. there was a bandage wrapped around your injury. you tried to stand up, but before you had the chance, a black haired boy walked into the room, carrying a bowl. his eyes grew wide before he said, "don't stand up. we just got the wound to stop bleeding, you could reopen it."
reversing your actions, you said, "where am I?"
"you're in the Court Physicians lodging (A/N: Idk what's it's called and I didn't want to say chambers because that's like his room)," said the boy. " you were found unconscious near the edges of the city by a Knight. he barely got you here in time, if he was any later you might not have survived. I'm the Court Physician's apprentice, Merlin."
"I'm Y/N," you said.
"well, Y/N, why are you here? I've never seen you before. do you live in Camelot?" he asked.
"no. I don't. I'm from a nearby kingdom. I was with a group of travelers, but we were attacked by bandits. i think everyone else died," you said. "I escaped from my father. he abused me. I came here because my cousin is a Knight here, and I thought he might be willing to help me. I don't know, though. I've never met him."
"I'm sure he will, King Arthur's Knights are only people he knows that are just. they have to be, the King has to trust them with his life."
"that's what I hoped. his name is Gwaine. is it possible that I could talk to him?" you asked.
"Gwaine?" his tone was a shocked one. "your cousin?"
"is that so shocking?"
"not shocking necessarily. just surprising. he said he didn't have any family left. here," he said, handing you the bowl. "eat. build your strength. I'll talk to Gwaine. I'm sure he'd like to meet you."
then he left.
~~~
several hours passed before Merlin's return. following him was a man with long, dark hair who wore chainmail armor.
"Y/N, this is Gwaine. Gwaine, this is the child I told you about, Y/N," said Merlin. "I'll leave you alone, I'll be just outside if you need anything."
"so, you're F/N's child?" he asked after a long silence.
"if you could even call me that. I was more of his punching bag," you said.
"he abused you?"
you nodded.
"that sounds just like him," he sighed.
"did you know him?"
"I did. he refused to help my mother. so did the King. he was the closest thing I had to a father and he left us behind. I'm just sorry you had to put up with him so long."
"I don't have to anymore, and that's what matters. I was hoping that you'd be able to help me? it's not like I exactly have a mother. it's honestly her fault that he started anyway."
there was a confused look on his face, before you continued, "she cheated on him, he found out, she left, he starting hitting me."
"I'm... so sorry. I can't imagine how that must have felt."
"it's fine. I'm sure I'll deal with it. but, you're my only family left. do you think I could..."
he finished your sentence. "stay here?" you nodded.
he smiled. "of course you can," he said.
you returned his smile. "thank you so much," you said.
"of course. I wouldn't just leave you alone. I know how that feels."
God, you could only imagine.
but for now, you had better focus on healing.
and maybe sleeping.
you had just noticed how tired you are.
there was a knock and Merlin came in.
"Gwaine, Arthur wants you," he said.
Gwaine nodded. "I'll be there in just a moment."
Merlin nodded back and closed the door.
"Y/N," he said. "I wish you that best of luck on your recovery."
you smiled, and then he left.
you actually had a future now, didn't you?
yes, you did.
(pt 2 maybe coming soon)

"I hope they taught you how to run in those pretty slippers..." Gwaine said, pointing at your shoes.
"Actually, I can run in them very well." you answered in a low volume while pressing your back against the cold stone wall behind you.
The two of you were currently fleeing from Morganas men. They had been looking for you since you escaped from her prison.
"Do you think that Arthur sent someone to get us away from he-" Gwaine cut you off by covering your mouth with one hand as he heard someone around the corner. The footsteps came closer, got louder. Yet eventually, the person must've turned around to leave since the steps got more quiet and distant.
Once Gwaine was sure about you two being alone, he let go of you again.
"I hope he sent his best knights." you answered the question to yourself as Gwaine huffed.
"If you refer to Lancelot, Percival, Elyan and Leon as the best knights, then I guess we're fucked."
His words made you huff as well.
He took your hand and guided you forward, searching your way out of the building.
"Looking good so far" he mumbled as he looked around a corner, spotting the exit.
"But how do we get the guards away from there?" You tilted your head in the direction of the four men standing left and right to the walls.
Gwaine turned to you, and for a moment, he even looked dead serious.
"(Y/N), do you trust me?"
Your cheeks turned red at his words and you felt your heart flutter. What a stupid question, you thought to yourself. The knight rested both hands on each of your shoulders, awaiting an honest answer.
"I trust you more than anyone else. What do you need me to do?"
Gwaine sighed silently and lifted your chin up with one hand.
"I need you to play along so that they don't alarm any other guards."
Without explaining his plan, he turned you around and grabbed you by your arms, urging you towards the guards.
He knew he wouldn't stand a chance against four men at the same time so he had to separate and catch them in a moment when they weren't paying attention to buy himself more time.
The four men looked at you as Gwaine dragged you into their direction. "You really thought you could get away, little lady, huh?" he exclaimed and pushed you onto your knees once you got a bit closer.
"I found her hiding in the tower!"
The four men mustered the two of you from top to bottom, and you understood his plan.
"You swine, let me go!" you cursed at him, as you knelt on the cold stone floor. "Quiet, woman!" Gwaine pushed your head down in faked contempt.
One of the guards knelt down in front of you with a disgusting grin on his face. "Oh, such a pretty thing~ Such a shame lady Morgana wants to kill you, you'd be in good hands with me and my men!" the guard joked, one of his colleagues coming closer to the two of you as well. The other two were still guarding the exit.
"Would you two take care of her?" Gwaine asked. The man kneeling in front of you touched your face with his dirty hands, squeezing your soft cheeks.
In disgust, you spat at the guard, directly into his face. He raised his hand to teach you a lesson, so you just squeezed your eyes shut and turned away. You expected a hard hit, but instead you heard the ringing of steel and a wet sound that was nothing knew to your ears.
When you opened your eyes again, you saw Gwaine's sword impaling the chest of the man close to you. "Hands off my princess." the knight grunted, as he pulled his sword out quickly. The blood splattered all over your face.
"Three more to go" you said as you wiped the blood from your eyes and got up in haste.
Gwaine fought against the other close guard, quickly finishing him of as well. The other two guards made their way over to Gwaine, weapon in hand.
"(Y/N), I hope you're right about what you said concerning your cinderella slippers, run!"
You did not want to turn, you hesitated. Leaving him behind was no option.
"I said run!"
One of the guardsmen took his chance and turned away from Gwaine, grabbing you by your neck as you just stood there paralyzed. The next thing you knew was this men holding a dagger to your throat.
"I'll kill her if you don't surrender!" He shouted at Gwaine.
Both of you didn't have much time until more guards would come, and you were both aware of it. Yet you would have to escape from this situation here first.
The man stood behind you, the blade of his weapon already kissing your skin. Gwaine froze at the sight of you, but only for a second before he came up with a new plan.
He stared at the exit with a big smile, pointing at the path leading into the woods.
"Ah, I knew that Pendragon brat would come and pick us up! They're here already!"
In shock, both guards turned to the exit. Gwaine used their distraction to his advantage and swung his sword at you or rather the man behind you. You ducked fast, dodging the sword that cut right into the throat of the guard.
" Hey, you almost killed me- watch out!"
Gwaine quickly turned and lunged his sword at the last guard, also finishing him off quickly.
He grabbed your hand and lead you out of the castle and into the woods.
You both ran for your lives for a good while until you paused for a brief moment.
"Well, that wasn't too bad, was it?" he stated with a wide smile.
"We would be a good team. You should join us for training sometime!"
"Sure, if we survive this."
"I'll ensure you, we will.
... You weren't lying when you said that you trusted me, huh?"
You looked up at Gwaine with an exhausted smile. The beat of your heart was pounding up to your throat.
"Of course not. If I'm ever stuck with someone again, I hope it's you."
The knight raised an eyebrow, showing off a cheeky grin.
"I was just born for that damsel-in-distress-thing."
It was undeniable that Gwaine was charming like a love spell, attracting like a strong magnet and handsome like no other.
This knight probably had many women run after him again once you would be back in Camelot. It was not like you were jealous, but you wished that you would be his interest as well.
As he saw how your face shifted more serious, so did his.
"I'm sorry for bringing you into this situation..."
You looked up to him, wiping a splash of blood from his chin with your sleeve. He lost himself in your eyes without you noticing.
It took a while until you realized that Gwaine looked completely hypnotized.
"You don't have to be sorry, after all you saved me.
... Gwaine? Are you alright?"
His eyes just blankly followed the momevent of your eyes and lips before he bowed down to you, stealing a quick kiss from you.
You both stood there a bit frozen, it took a while until you talked and moved again.
" I'll make sure no pig ever will even try to lay their hands on you again."
There was this serious tone in his voice again.
A smile slowly appeared on your face and your cheeks blushed even more.
"You're safe with me, (Y/N)."
The way he said your name made your heart beat even faster. You were obsessed with his voice. His face.
His hair. His jokes. His personality. All of him.
Soon you heard Morganas men coming after you again, but they were pretty far away yet.
"Let's hurry, we'll be behind the border in less than an hour. Then we're safe."
He reached out for your hand and guided you on with a slight smile.
"You better be right, or I'll tell Arthur you called him a 'Pendragon brat'."

A Gwaine x reader drabble I randomly got inspired to write

"Gwaine", you laughed as you went after him. "Gwaine, darling!"
But shouting did no good, other than him turning around and flashing you a smile before flinging himself right into the midst of the crashing waves. You stopped running when your toes hit the water, giggling as he broke the surface again and shook his head like a dog would. His hair was clinging to it and his face and dripping down into the sea and the smile on his lips was the most beautiful you'd seen in a while.
"Get in!", he shouted, ridiculously waggling his arms as he kept himself swimming.
Normally, you wouldn't. Normally you'd sit down on a blanket and eat some snacks and read a book and watch the horizon or the sky and enjoy life as it was, but this wasn't normally. Nothing was "normally" with Gwaine. Really that was what you loved about him so much.
So you wasted no time thinking about it and just followed right after him, doing it the way he had done and diving head first into the waves. The cold water embraced you, your breath knocked out of you in the blink of an eye and your heart missing a beat, any and every sound fading away for just a second. Then you resurfaced and the world was bright again and you had to catch your breath, spluttering and rubbing water out of your face and looking at him, his eyes wide as though he hadn't quite expected you'd follow this quickly. No one would have. But he was still grinning and you were now, too, and when he grabbed your hands and pulled you closer to him you laughed.
"Gwaine, darling, I love you but if you don't let go of me we'll go down", you scolded him, not making a single move to push him away though. He kissed the tip of your nose, droplets of water falling off it when he pulled away again.
"I'll risk that", he said, just before leaning in and meeting your lips with his. Your eyes fluttered shut almost in reflex, your hands leaving his and instead clawing at his chest, crossing behind his neck. You loved him, god, how you loved this man.
When he'd drawn back, it took a while to adjust to reality and once you had, he was already swimming towards the other side of the lake.
"Race you!", he shouted over his shoulder, not waiting for you to catch up as you rolled your eyes and made your way after him.

It didn’t take them more than a day and a night to reach Valmore. As soon as they reached the city Morgana quickly caught eyes on Y/n. She jumped off her horse and practically ran over to the y/h/c-ed girl, everyone else followed in Morgana’s direction.
“Y/n!” Morgana yelled out happily.
“Morgana?” Y/n questioned with a furrowed brow as she turned around to fcae where she heard her name called from. Upon seeing who she thought she heard calling her name. Y/n moved away from her knights, handing her horse's reins off to one of them, meeting Morgana halfway in a hug. “What are you doing here?”
“You said to visit anytime.” Morgana smiled at the princess.
“I know I did. I just didn’t think you would so soon. Don’t get me wrong I’m happy you're here. All of you” Y/n smirked happily to have them in her home. Her gaze went across everyone but it lingered a little longer on Arthur before she cast her eyes down.
“What happened to your arm?” Merlin asked with a worried expression after everyone had greeted eachother with smiles.
With Merlin's question, all of them turned their eyes to Y/n’s arm. Noticed the not so pretty gash on her bicep. It was obviously healing and had been stitched up nicely.
“Oh, this?” Y/n pointed to her upper right arm. She shrugged, compared to other injuries she’s had this was a cakewalk. “Happened when I was training. Hadn’t done it in so long I botched a move and well this happened.”
Everyone felt shocked at how she addressed her wound as nothing. But then Arthur spoke up. “Are you ok?”
Y/n looked up at the blonde prince again and nodded before answering. “Yeah, I’ve had worse. Especially when it comes to training.”
Arthur nodded in understanding but it didn’t stop his concern.
“Was it a sword? Or-” Leon asked wondering what made the slightly jagged cut.
“No, no. Swordfighting I wasn’t rusty at.” Y/n shook her head at the young knight. “This came from hand to hand combat. Kind of- a few moves I was rusty at which made me mess up and fall. This cut I got from a very sharp nasty rock.”
Leon nodded in understanding. Gwen stepped forward with a worried look before she asked. “You’ve had worse? That bruise on your upper back looks horrid.”
The others had to agree the bruise looked worse than the healing cut.
“Oh, if only you’ve seen how into it we can all get when it comes to hand to hand.” Y/n smiled letting out an amused laugh. Things were different here than in Camelot. “We go full out. No holding back. Lots of dislocations, torn muscles, cuts, all of it.”
“Women fight?” Gwaine raised his brow in shock and it showed on his face.
Y/n smirked at their shocked faces, so she continued to explain. “In my kingdom, women are warriors, Knights, fighters. We don’t discourage women from wanting to join in on those kinds of things. We encourage them.”
“But the princess?” Lancelot raised one brow in a teasing manner, having seen her fight before unlike most of the others.
“Haha, Lancelot.” Y/n playfully glared at him. “Yes, even the princess. I should know how to defend myself and my kingdom, and my people.”
Y/n spared a glance to Arthur, trying to read his feelings on the words she had said.
“Well, we should probably go up to the Castle.” Morgana suggested with a proud smile on her face. She truly wished she could spend some time in Valmore, enough to learn skills in combat. Maybe even something more magical.
“Yes. I bet you're all tired from the journey. Follow me and my knights. We’ll escort you.” Y/n nodded in agreement to Morgana’s words.
Y/n headed over to her horse, as she went to get up Arthur noticed a slight grimace came across her face as she mounted her horse.
“Do you need some help?” Arthur asked stepping closer to just in case her arm gave out as she pulled herself up onto the saddle.
“No, I uh. I get it.” She answered flustered to having him so close after so long of being apart. Once she was up on the horse she looked down at Arthur with a small smile on her lip. “As I said, I’ve had worse injuries than this. They’ve never stopped me before.”
With that said Y/n escorted her friends from Camelot up to the castle. Once they got their Y/n and her knights took them into the throne room where her parents were currently. After getting them arrangements to stay for as long as they want. With that everyone was shown to their rooms.
It was the next day when everyone decided to do some training in the morning. Some from Camelot had come down to watch Y/n train.
And she wasn’t kidding when she said they trained hardcore.
“Should she be fighting with her arm?” Merlin asked out to anyone that would give him an answer. He winced as he watched his friend fight.
“No.” Arthur answered leaning against the waist high wall. He to was concerned about her but she could hold her own, he knew that. Arthur was more concerned about her fighting and breaking open the freshly healed wound. “No, she shouldn't be, Merlin.”
“Well, are you just going to stare and watch her or go over and talk to her?” Morgana spoke giving Arthur a knowing look.
Arthur glanced Morgana's way before turning his attention back to Y/n. “She’s in the middle of a fight. She needs to concentrate on that.”
“Y/n wasn’t kidding when she said they don’t hold back.” Leon commented as he to watched the training.
Gwen agreed. “Yeah. They really go hard at one another.”
“She’s fighting with men.” Lancelot stated impressed.
“And winning.” Morgana stated proudly.
“She can hold her own.” Merlin nodded in agreement before asking Arthur another question. “When are you going to talk and make up.”
“When I can get her alone.” Arthur told him refraining from rolling his eyes.
“Good luck with that. She’s always surrounded by her knights.” Merlin countered with a tilt of his head.
“They're her friends.” Gwen tried to defend but Morgana cut in wanting to join in on Merlin’s pestering of Arthur.
“Their also men.” Morgana smirked. There were a few girls as well but if she wanted to get at Arthur. Mention all the other men around the girl he loves.
Merlin sucked in a breath in a teasing manner. “She seems very close to knight Jon and Knight Wardlow.”
“I get it okay?” Arthur snapped at them. He didn’t need to be told what he was seeing with his own eyes. Not that he’d admit it but he did feel jealous.
^ ^ ^
It was the next day that Arthur found a moment to get Y/n alone to talk.
“Y/n!” Arthur yelled after her down the hallway.
“Arthur.” Y/n said as she turned around to look at the prince as he came to a stop in front of her.
“Can we talk?” Arthur asked and he glanced nervously to the knights that were beside her.
Y/n stood still just watching him for a moment before giving him a ‘yes’ nod.
“You gonna be okay?” Knight Darby asked the princess with a look Arthur couldn’t decipher.
“Yeah. I’ll be fine.” Y/n nodded sending Darby a grateful nod for checking first. She was indeed close with her knights and when she came back she had told them what had happened. So they were on edge about leaving her alone with the prince of Camelot.
“If not just yell out. I won’t be far.” Knight Jon stated with narrowed eyes pinned on the young prince. Which was very intimidating to Arthur. He’d seen the man fight, he was pure violence.
“Hmmm” Wardlow hummed and nodded in agreement with his fellow knight and friend. Y/n nodded as the 3 men walked to the end of the hallway not so subtly watching.
“What is on your mind Prince Arthur?” Y/n asked shifting on her feet.
“Can we talk in private?” he sighed not feeling comfortable being watched with what he wanted to talk about.
“Of course.” Y/n gulped nodding before turning and giving her knights a wave. Told them it was okay and to stay. So her and Arthur headed into the nearest room. “What is it you would like to talk about prince Arthur?”
He sighed leaning his head to the side. “Are we really going back to using ‘Prince before my name?”
“How else should I address you?” Y/n said looking down at her hands. She didn’t know how to act around him anymore. Not really.
“As just Arthur.” Arthur said loudly before taking a breath. He wasn’t mad at her he was pissed at himself. For putting them here. “Like before.”
It saddened him to realize he made her feel like they had to go back to the beginning. He hated himself for it.
“But things aren’t like before.” she told him with a sigh. God did she wish they were like before. She really missed him but how could they be together now?” We were together before. Now we’re not so I should address you with your title.”
“Are we really that far gone? Our relationship?” Arthur asked with slightly worried eyes. He couldn’t lose her.
“You tell me.” Y/n lifted her shoulders and then her eyes to look at him. The decision was in his court, he’s the one that ruined things, to begin with.
“y/n-” Arthur went to start but Y/n knew his tone of voice so she cut him off.
“No, Arthur. I can’t go through all that heartache again. I-I just can’t.” Y/n’s voice broke as she spoke and that made Arthur's chest ache.
“I’m sorry.” he didn’t know how else to start.
Y/n shook her head. “Don’t apologize when you don’t mean it.”
Arthur squinted in confusion. “What makes you think I don’t mean it?”
“Because you despise magic! An I have magic so therefore you despise me!” Y/n yelled out before taking a deep breath looking at Arthur with unshed tears in her eyes. The love of her life hated her because of something she frankly enjoyed about herself. “You hate me because of something that is a part of me.”
Arthur stepped forward shaking his head quickly at her words. “I don’t hate you.”
“If you hate a part of me then you hate me.” He couldn’t hate her magic and not hate her. And she couldn’t be with someone who hated her. “That’s how that works Arthur.”
Arthur raised his hands to cup her cheeks, using his thumbs to wipe away tears she didn’t notice were falling down her cheeks. “I could never hate or despise you Y/n.”
“The things you said to me when you found out and the way you looked at me and acted towards me all say otherwise, Arthur.” Y/n looked into his eyes, she could see the regret in his eyes.
“I felt betrayed and I was angry.I said things that weren’t true and that I didn’t mean.” Arthur explained but it didn’t make him feel any better and he didn’t expect to fix things. But she deserved to know. “It's no excuse for what I did. There’s nothing that could excuse my behavior from before. But I want to repair what we had. I want to make it up to you. If that's even a possibility.”
Y/n shook her head, it was a hard decision to make. And she didn’t know if she could, no matter how bad she wanted Arthur back. “I don’t know Arthur.”
Arthur sighed dreading asking this next question. “Are you afraid of me?”
“What?” Y/n looked at him in shock.
“Are you afraid of me? Were you afraid to tell me because you thought I would have had you killed?” He asked with a gulp afraid himself of the answer she’d give. He wouldn’t blame her though. With how Uther felt about magic and him raising Arthur to be the same. . .
“As much as I wish I could say I wasn’t. . . Besides hiding my magic I have never lied to you. I don’t plan on doing it now.” She told him before letting out a deep breath. “Yes, I was afraid that you might tell your father and we both know how I would have been ‘taken care of’.”
“y/n” Arthur's gaze dropped feeling even more disappointed in himself.
“It's not that I didn’t want to tell you, Arthur. It’s just-” Y/n hated that she felt this was but it was true. “I saw how your father flt about sorcery, and then how you felt about it. . . I was scared.”
Arthur nodded solemnly. “You had every right to be.”
“I’m sorry.” she said looking away from him. She felt guilty, even though she had no reason to be.
“Don’t be. You have nothing to be sorry for.” He shook his head, dismissing her apology she had nothing to apologize for it was all him. “I’m sorry. For how I reacted and treated you. It was wrong of me.”
“Its ok-”
Arthur immediately stopped her. He didn’t want her to forgive him that easily or pretend it was nothing. He treated her horribly, that wasn’t okay. “No, its not. An I know I hurt you.”
Y/n but her lip as they starred at eachother for a moment. “You could’ve just given me a chance. Magic a chance.”
“I hate myself for hurting you. I’ll never forgive myself for all that I put you through.” Arthur agreed with her, he could’ve given her a chance. Prove and show him she didn’t use magic for evil. “But I do want to make it up to you.”
“How?” She asked with a tilted head. If his views didn’t change how could he make it up to her?
“Well, against my views I was taught growing up. I want you to show me your magic.” Arthur gave her a small smile. It didn’t excuse what he did and said but maybe if he could understand her magic and that part of her then they could get back together.
“Are you sure?” Y/n asked, she knew how he felt if this was uncomfortable for him then maybe things should just be done. She didn’t want to force him to like all of her. If they didn’t work then they would have to accept it.
“More sure than I am about a lot of things.” Arthur said shifting closer to his princess. “But I’m even more sure that I want us to get back together.”
Y/n took a deep breath. “Arthur- we can’t just go back to what and how we were.”
“I know that. It’s going to take time for me to gain your trust back. I’m determined to do so.” Arthur looked into her eyes with determination and passion. He was going to gain his princess's trust back. No matter what.

The king smiles from the courtyard steps, ready to greet his queen, but when the party, or what remains of it, comes into view, his expression darkens in an instant. The party is but a fragment of what had left days ago.
He rushes down the steps, taking two at a time, to meet his love, helping her dismount. She falls into his arms.
“We were attacked by bandits,” She says, her voice wavering with emotion. “They took (Y/N),”
Gwen sobs into Arthur’s shoulder, before pulling back.
“You have to save her, Arthur, we have to help her,” Tears fall down her cheeks. “She’s my friend,”
“We will, Guinevere,” He rests his finger under her chin, gently lifting her face so her gaze meets his. “I promise you, we will bring her home,”
He looks behind his queen, meeting the gaze of his most senior knight. Gently asking Gwen to go inside, he gestures for Sir Leon to approach.
“The others have just finished training,” The king says. “They should still be in the armoury. Tell them to gear up, we’re heading out,”
“Right away, sire,”
~
Sir Leon rushes to the armoury at his king’s command, where he does indeed find the other knights of the inner circle packing up their gear. Sirs Gwaine, Percival and Elyan’s conversation ceases as they look up upon hearing his approach.
“There’s no time for rest, gear up and be ready to head out within the half hour,” Sir Leon says.
“What’s happened?” Sir Elyan steps forward. “Is it Gwen?”
“No, she’s made it back safely, but we were attacked by bandits. They took (Y/N),”
“What?” Gwaine pushes past Elyan, coming face to face with Leon. “How did this happen? Why didn’t you save her?” His voice rises, wide eyes searching Leon’s.
“I couldn’t save both (Y/N) and the queen,” Leon replies.
“You could have,” Gwaine growls, grasping Leon by the collar. “If you really cared, you would have found a way,”
“It is not a question of caring, Gwaine. We were outnumbered. My first duty was to my queen,”
“I should have been there,” Gwaine shakes Leon. “I should have been the one to go. Her worth should not have been thought as lesser, she should not have been sacrificed,”
“That’s not how it was,” Leon starts, but Gwaine raises a fist, his lips pulled back in a snarl.
“Stop!” Percival’s voice booms as his hands pull the two knights apart. “The longer we spend arguing, the further (Y/N) slips from our reach,” He looks between his two friends. “Put the accusations aside, Gwaine, and get ready to head out,”
Gwaine looks to Percival for a moment, before giving a curt nod. Percival releases Gwaine from his grip and heads to the armour rack. Gwaine shoots Leon a glare before doing the same.
“We’ll bring her home,” Elyan places a hand on Gwaine’s shoulder, giving a reassuring squeeze.
~
You’re jolted awake by a sharp poke to the ribs, and ordered to get up and eat some breakfast, as the camp is being packed up, ready to move on.
You and the men move out on foot except for the bandit leader, who rides one of the horses, the others being used to carry supplies and loot.
You walk all day, your mind in a daze, as if you’re phasing in and out of existence, the pain in your feet the only thing dragging you back to reality. You catch part of a conversation two of the men are having, overhearing them mention that the party has now crossed the border into Odin’s kingdom. Any small hope you have carried of being saved leaves you. No matter how pure King Arthur’s heart, it would be foolish to risk crossing the border to save an employee.
Any thoughts of rescue now banished from your mind, you wonder what’s in store for you. The only hope you cling to now is that you will be purchased for a lady, perhaps to be a maidservant. That mightn’t be so bad, if she isn’t cruel to you.
When the sun is low in the sky, the bandits make camp again. The night is much the same as the last, with the occasional jeers and gestures from the men, but they stay true to their leader’s wishes: they do not touch you. In fact, they keep their distance, as if an invisible barrier surrounds you. But any feeling of safety that might bring is overshadowed by the uncertainty of your future. When you go to bed, your broken sleep is accompanied by restless dreams fuelled by your fear.
~
Already awake when the men rise for the day, a sharp poke isn’t needed to rouse you this time. You get up and have breakfast, returning your bowl to the pile once you’ve finished eating. When you turn around, you notice figures emerge from the trees. Your first thought being that they are more bandits, perhaps ones from a different clan, you back away and head for the horses, crouching beside them.
“Merlin, get (Y/N) to safety!”
You whirl around at the mention of your name and find King Arthur of Camelot, dressed very unlike himself, in a blue tunic and brown leather vest. The blue tunic which you made.
Within moments, Merlin is at your side.
“Are you hurt?” He asks, his eyes searching you frantically.
You shake your head and take his arm when he offers it, letting him help you to stand. Once you’re steady, you glance up, eyes widening as you spot two bandits heading straight for you. Merlin turns, following your gaze, before murmuring in your ear.
“Run for the trees,”
You do as he says, finding a particularly wide tree to hide behind, when you hear a shout. Peering around the bough, you spot the two bandits, now flat on their backs by the campfire, clothing aflame, and Merlin, sprinting your way. He takes your hand and guides you away from the camp and behind another tree.
“Stay here, out of sight,” He pants.
“Please don’t leave me,”
“I need to help back there. Stay here and you’ll be safe,”
You nod reluctantly and Merlin runs back the way he came.
You pull your knees against your chest so your form remains as small as possible, the tree’s uneven surface pressing into your back. You attempt to steady your breathing, which proves difficult with the sounds of battle thumping in your ears. You hate not knowing what’s going on, which side is besting the other, so you lean out slightly to take a peek.
Your eyes scan the camp-turned-battlefield, spotting Sir Leon, Sir Elyan and Sir Percival. You continue, noticing a bandit not engaged, his gait stealthy, as he approaches a knight clashing with another bandit.
“Gwaine!” You shout as loud as you can.
Sir Gwaine’s gaze leaves his opponent and finds you, pointing to his yet unseen attacker. Gwaine whirls around and raises his sword just in time to block the incoming blow before thrusting his blade into the stealthy bandit’s chest. Pulling the blade free, he spins around, continuing his battle with his original opponent.
You exhale with relief, the thought of what might have happened unbearable, and return to your position behind the tree, meaning to keep watch in case of another dishonourable attack, when a lumbering figure comes into view. The bandit leader’s hulking form limps toward you, his face set in a scowl. He brings his fingers to his mouth, whistling loudly. The sound of pounding hooves approaches, a horse coming into view, stopping some feet away from the bandit leader, waiting for its master. The bandit reaches for you, yanking your arm so hard that you fall to your knees.
“Let her go!”
You hear a shout from the camp and look up to see King Arthur, a crossbow trained on your attacker. The bandit’s large hand still grasping your arm, he pulls you up, snaking his arm around your neck, your back pressed against him. He takes small steps towards his horse, your feet dragging with him, as he uses you as a human shield.
“If you put her on that horse, you’re a dead man,” The king shouts from his position, edging closer.
Your captor stops in his tracks. You feel him moving behind you, his other arm fumbling for something.
“And if I let the woman go, you’ll allow me to walk free?” The bandit bellows from behind your head, making your ears ring.
“That’s right,” The king says.
Gwaine steps up beside Arthur, speaking quietly in the king’s ear. The king responds in the same inaudible tone.
“If you’re planning to trick me, the wench dies,”
Your stomach drops. “Please don’t kill me,” You beg. “That is King Arthur Pendragon. He is an honourable man. He will keep his word,”
He grunts, before shouting to the camp again. “I let her go, and I get on my horse and ride away,”
“That’s right,” The king replies.
The bandit removes his arm from around your neck, bringing a moment of relief, until you feel a pull against your scalp as he tugs on your braided hair.
“I won’t be left with nothing,” He murmurs in your ear.
Your head lurches forward as the pressure on your scalp suddenly dissipates. While at first you think he’s simply let go of you, your head feels unusually light. Horror dawns on you as you reach a hand around the back of your head, feeling the hacked ends of your hair. You turn to your captor, spotting the glint of a knife as he returns it to his belt, and in the other hand, a bundle of hair, your hair. A guttural scream escapes you as your knees buckle. The bandit mounts his horse and urges it to run, just as a crossbow bolt buries into his leg. He cries out but the horse keeps its pace and is soon out of view.
Merlin rushes forward, skidding along the ground to kneel beside you.
“I’m so sorry. I lost sight of him,”
You glance up at the sound of crunching leaves, spotting Gwaine jogging toward you, crossbow in hand. You hastily pull up the hood of your cloak as he crouches down in front of you.
“Are you hurt?”
His eyes flit about, searching you all over. You want to curl up and hide under your cloak, but since you cannot, you simply shake your head. He stands and extends an arm to you. You reach up to take it and he helps you to stand, staying by your side as he leads you through the camp, Merlin following behind, when you spot the stolen saddlebags.
“Those are the silks we got from the market,” You say. “They stole them too,”
Gwaine shoots a look at Merlin, who steps forward and picks up the bags, swinging them over his shoulders.
You make it to the horses and Gwaine takes you to his, positioning himself to give you a leg-up.
“Gwaine,” The king calls out. “(Y/N) can ride with Merlin. I need you to be ready to fight if the need arises. Who knows if those bandits have more friends hiding in the woods,”
Gwaine frowns and takes you to a different horse, where Merlin is checking over the tack.
“You hear that, Merlin?” Gwaine asks his friend.
Merlin nods. “I’ll look after her,”
Gwaine gives you a pained look before returning to his own horse. Merlin helps you to mount his before climbing on himself. You hold onto the back of his jacket as the party starts to ride, your head resting against his back as fatigue washes over you.
~
When the sky darkens, the party stops to make camp. You sit upon the fallen leaves on the ground as Merlin builds a fire and prepares a meal, while the knights tend to their horses.
You stare into the flickering flames, just as you did the last two nights with the bandit camp. You should feel relief at being rescued, to be away from those foul men, but you seem to have no feelings at all.
“Here,” You’re jolted from your stupor by Gwaine passing you a bowl of stew. “First serve from the pot,”
You take the stew and allow its scent to fill your nostrils. It seems Merlin is a better cook than the bandits. Gwaine gets a serve for himself and sits next to you as you slip the spoon into your mouth, the stew slightly too hot against your tongue.
“The bandits,” Gwaine says quietly from beside you. “Did they give you anything to eat? I can get you a bigger helping,”
You swallow your mouthful and clear your throat. “They fed me,”
Gwaine nods, taking the first spoonful from his own bowl. You continue eating, noticing from the corner of your eye that Gwaine keeps glancing your way. You wish he wouldn’t, and consider turning away. For the past couple of days, you’ve been watched at all times, even when you needed to answer a call of nature, you were escorted and watched, your skirt offering the only privacy. It matters not that you are now watched out of care and concern. You wish more than anything that you couldn’t be seen.
You finish your stew and place the bowl beside you.
“I’m tired,” You say as you stand.
“I’ll fetch you a bedroll,” Gwaine says as he gets up as well.
You stay standing by the fire as he does so. You don’t expect to get much sleep, but feel that if you are believed to be sleeping, then people will stop looking at you, questions and pity in their eyes.
Gwaine returns with a bedroll and offers to set it up for you, but you decline and take it from him, finding a spot between the horses and a tree. There won’t be room for anyone to set up a bedroll next to yours, which is what you want.
~
The party sets out the next morning, you riding with Merlin again. After a few hours on the road, the party arrives back in Camelot. Once you’ve reached the citadel’s courtyard, the horses slow and come to a stop. Merlin dismounts before helping you to do so. You hear your name called out and look up to find Gwen running toward you. She embraces you, holding you tight as her head rests on your shoulder.
“I’m so sorry, (Y/N), I’m so sorry,”
While you’re startled at first, you sink into her embrace, wrapping your own arms around her. After a few moments, she pulls back.
“We must have Gaius check over you,”
While all you want to do right now is disappear in your chambers, the look in Gwen’s eyes makes you give in. She threads her arm through yours and leads you into the castle. You turn your head at the sound of rushed footsteps behind to see Merlin and Gwaine following.
Once you reach Gaius’ chamber’s, he beckons you inside and leads you to sit on the edge of his bed.
“Did the bandits hurt you in any way?” He asks, his voice gentle.
You shake your head. Hearing a shuffle from your left, you look over to see Gwaine and Merlin standing nearby, watching you. Gaius follows your gaze and sighs quietly.
“Gwaine, Merlin, please give us some privacy,”
You glance at them guiltily, but are relieved when they do as Gaius says, closing the door behind them.
“Do you want me to go?” Gwen asks from beside you. “I won’t be offended,”
“No,” You reach for her hand. “Please, stay,”
She gives your hand a gentle squeeze in response.
“Now that you don’t have an audience, I shall ask again: were you hurt in any way?” Gaius asks.
You swallow. “No… their leader told his men,” You cough to clear your throat, which has begun to swell, impairing your voice. “He told them not to touch me because… I’d be worth more unspoiled,”
Your voice breaks on the last syllable. Gwen puts her arm around you, holding you close.
“Worth more?” Gaius says. “Do you mean to say they were intending to sell you into slavery?”
You nod shakily. “He said that every part of me was worth something. I suppose that’s why, before he escaped, he did this,”
You pull down your hood, revealing your hacked hair. Gwen gasps, bringing a hand to her mouth in shock.
“I am sorry this has happened to you,” Gaius says. “The only consolation I can give is that your hair will grow back in time,”
“How much time? How can I be seen like this?”
Gwen leans her head against yours. “We’ll work something out together,”
Gaius walks over to a shelf and plucks a small bottle from it, which he brings back and offers to you.
“A tincture to help you sleep. Take three drops when you go to bed. All I can prescribe is rest,” He looks to Gwen. “Please take (Y/N) to her chambers,”
Gwen nods and helps you to stand, before leading you out the door. Gwaine and Merlin are standing outside in the corridor. You turn your face away to hide the evidence of any emotion as you pass by them.
When you arrive in your chambers, you notice two neat piles of cloth have been placed on your worktable – the fabrics from the market. Apart from that, your chambers look just as they did when you left them, but you don’t feel comfortable as you should in your home.
“I can’t rest,” You say. “I feel… dirty… and I can still feel where that man’s arm was, as if he is still restraining me,”
Gwen gives you a sympathetic look. “Do you have a tub?” She asks.
You nod. “It’s in the bedroom,”
Gwen enters your room and returns a few moments later, rolling the round bathtub along the floor, before setting it down in front of the fire. Looking about the room, she spots the large pail of water in the corner and finds two pots, which she takes to the pail and fills, returning them to the fireplace.
“If you can get a fire going and start heating the water, I’ll have some more fetched for you,” Gwen says.
“You needn’t go to the trouble,”
“Please,” Gwen says firmly. “Let me do this,”
She strides across the room and opens the door, looking back at you before she leaves. “Don’t forget the fire,”
You nod and turn your attention to the grate, where you begin to assemble firewood and kindling.
By the time Gwen returns, the pots of water are hanging above the fire, beginning to simmer.
“Some servants will be by soon to bring the water,” She says. “How about you go up to your room and get undressed?”
You do as she says and enter your room, finally removing your cloak and stripping down to just your shift, before heading over to the basin stand. You hold your breath as you peer into the mirror to see your reflection for the first time in days. The hacked ends of your hair are uneven, wisps of longer hairs poking out between the shorter parts.
You hear Gwen’s voice as she presumably lets the servants inside, since you hear the sounds of several footsteps and splashing water. After the noise dies down, there’s a knock at your bedchamber door.
“The servants just left,” Gwen says. “Everything is ready for you,”
You descend from your room to find the bathtub full of steaming water and your dressing screen positioned next to it for privacy.
“Thank you so much, Gwen,” You dip a finger into the water. “It feels wrong to have the queen doing this for me,”
“Do not think of me as the queen,” Gwen replies. “But as your friend who wants to help you in any way she can,”
You smile, hoping she understands how much all this means to you in a time you cannot express it in words. Stepping behind the screen, you remove your shift and step into the bath, lowering your body into the water until just your head and neck remain unsubmerged. To your left you find your small table with soaps set atop it. You wash yourself, each stroke cleansing away some of unpleasantness of the last few days, making you feel a little more like yourself. You wash your face and lastly your hair.
You sigh. “What am I going to do about my hair? I can’t have anyone see me like this,”
“You could wrap it, or wear a cap or veil?” Gwen suggests from the other side of the screen.
“I suppose those are my options now. I’ll put something together tomorrow,”
“Would you like me to tidy it up, at least? So when it grows, it will be even?” Gwen offers.
“Yes, thank you Gwen. My scissors are on my workbench by the window, and I have a hairbrush in my room beside the basin,”
You hear a chair scrape back as Gwen goes to retrieve them.
“May I come in?” She asks when she returns.
“You may,”
Gwen steps around the screen and into view, scissors and brush in one hand and chair in the other. She places the chair behind you and sits down, beginning to brush your hair gently. You close your eyes, relaxing at her delicate touch, the gentlest you’ve been handled in days.
“I’m going to begin cutting, just taking off enough so that it’s nice and even, alright?”
“Go ahead,”
Gwen’s fingers brush against your neck as she takes the first section of hair and you hear the scissors snip, the cold metal gliding against your warm skin. She brushes through your hair again and snips a couple more times.
“There,” Gwen says, placing the scissors down on the small table.
You jolt at the sound of knocking at your chamber door.
“That’s probably Gwaine come to check on you,” Gwen says, standing up. “Shall I tell him to come back later?”
“No, tell him I’m resting,”
Gwen nods and disappears behind the screen. You hear her footsteps reach the door and it unlatching. You listen to murmured words, but can’t make them out, however you do recognise the visitor’s voice as Gwaine’s. A pang shoots through your heart, thinking of how if it were another time, where none of these terrible things happened, you’d be overjoyed to see him.
Gwen returns, standing at the edge of the screen.
“It was Gwaine. He wanted to know how you were doing and asked if he could see you. I told him you were resting, like you said,”
You hang your head. “I just can’t bear to see him again today,”
“You don’t need to explain yourself to me,” Gwen says gently.
“The water’s starting to get cold,” You say. “I suppose I should get out,”
Gwen removes the towel that’s hanging on the dressing screen and brings it beside the bath, spreading it out to give you privacy. You stand, water drops streaming down your skin, and step out of the bath. Gwen drapes the towel over you and steps behind the screen again. You dry yourself and head to your room, where a clean shift and robe are waiting for you, and you put them on. When you step back in the main chamber, Gwen is standing by the dining table, a plate of food in front of her.
“I had a meal brought up from the palace kitchens. I was going to whip something up but you don’t have much in,”
“Gwen,” You stride toward her, pulling her into an embrace. “I don’t know how I can ever properly thank you for your kindness. It means more to me than words can describe,”
“Don’t worry about that,” Gwen smiles. “It’s what friends do,”
She gestures for you to sit. When you do, she places cutlery next to your plate.
“Now, eat and get some rest,”
Gwen bids you good day and leaves your chambers. You finish your meal and following her instruction, return to your bedroom, draw the curtain and climb into bed.

How would Arthur and Gwaine (seperate) react to their crush defeating them in a sparing match?
Sure thing!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Arthur and Gwaine’s Reaction to Their Crush Beating Them in a Sparring Match Headcanons
Tumblr media
Arthur
-Oh Arthur would be super pouty. While he may have a crush on you, that wouldn’t stop him from saying that you cheated. Arthur is a proud man and there is no changing that.
-In fact, he would feel a little embarrassed that he lost to you.
-It wasn’t because he didn’t think you were strong. Arthur, as a king, just perceives himself to be incredibly strong. His people thought so as well, and he wanted you to know that. So, to be beaten by you, he was a bit worried that your opinion on him might change.
-Arthur’s poutiness would cause him to be teased. Cue Gwaine calling him “princess”. Lucky for him, you would come to him defense, saying how Arthur fought well. That might make him feel a bit better.
-Give him a while, but he would eventually challenge you to a rematch. And this cycle would continue until he eventually beat you. This would cause Arthur to go into prat mode and boast about how good he is despite you beating him all those times before.
Gwaine
-Gwaine would be the opposite of Arthur. Instead of pouting and thinking he should’ve won, Gwaine just grows to like you even more. He is a big flirt after all, especially to you.
-For you to beat him in a fight means you must be something special.
-Cue Gwaine complimenting your skills and the others being just done with it. Training could be over, and he would find some way to bring up how good you must be to have beaten him. Yes, he’s kissing up big time.
-He might even admit that he wasn’t trying so hard or that he let you win. This leads to little teases between the two of you, something that gets his heart all a flutter. Even better if the others are there to pipe in now and again.
-Gwaine would offer to spar with you again. Not because he thinks he can win, but because he wants to get that fuzzy feeling of being beaten by you again. He doesn’t even care if the others tease him.

NSFW🔞minors dni!
𝑲𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑨𝒓𝒕𝒉𝒖𝒓
・The first time was your wedding night, and although you had shared chaste kisses throughout your courtship, it wasn’t until your wedding night that you realised how much Arthur had yearned for you
・A flurry of hands gripping and pulling at clothes
・Arthur couldn’t stop devouring your neck with kisses, licking and biting. You knew there would be bruises there in the morning
・He had murmured something against your skin and it had taken you a moment to process it.
   “What was that?”
・ “I love you” he said in between kisses
・He worshipped you all night
・His favourite position soon became cowgirl
𝑴𝒆𝒓𝒍𝒊𝒏
・Awkward at first - not in the sense that no one knew what to do. No, Merlin was ... too passionate? His magic became out of control. He accidentally broke windows when his tongue was in your mouth
・Started fires when you undid his pants
・And the potion jars flew off their shelf when you yanked him onto the bed
・You were both laughing though, and after a while, you both ignored it.
・Very passionate at first, then he checked to see if you were okay.
・Once you told him yes (very enthusiastically), he led you to his room and closed the door
・Merlin was doing his best not to moan too loud. He bite onto your shoulder to silence himself
𝑺𝒊𝒓 𝑮𝒘𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒆
・The sexual attention between you and Gwaine was otherwordly
・He too wanted to wait until marriage, but one night, when he promised himself to you, you couldn’t help yourself
・You had been together for a year and a half by then. And any thought of him leaving you had faded with time
・Left bite marks and that became common practice from Gwaine. He always leaves bite marks somewhere on your body
・That night you left hickies everywhere on Gwaine’s body. He liked them though, it was like a reminder of your first night together
・With Gwaine it’s always light-hearted. And this is especially true during sex.
・He still cracks a few jokes here and there, but you usually shut him up with a kiss
𝑺𝒊𝒓 𝑳𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆𝒍𝒐𝒕
・ He had proposed with a ring that took him a while to save up for
・Lancelot had the intention to wait until marriage, but the danger that he always found himself in ... it felt like time was ticking down
・He said he didn’t want to leave you with a tarnished reputation (and possibly a babe) if anyone found out
・But you chose to be intimate and told Lancelot that it didn’t matter. You just wanted him
・Consent King. Always asked you if you were comfortable, if you wanted to stop, what you wanted him to do and not do etc.
・Undressed you as you undressed him
・Slow and sensual - taking in every part of your naked body
・He entered you slowly, letting you get comfortable to his length
𝑺𝒊𝒓 𝑳𝒆𝒐𝒏
・Waited like a gentleman until your wedding night
・His desire was practically radiating with desire at the altar
・He was patient throughout the night, but as soon as dinner was served, he whispered in your ear
・Everyone ... kinda knew? He wasn’t very secretive about it. Pretty suspicious that the groom leaves the hall and then the bride follows
・Neither of you cared
・His lips found yours as soon as you were alone. His big hands gripping your waist, pulling you closer to him
・Neither of you bothered to undress, he just lifted your dress / undid your pants, and you unhooked his own.
・He was in you in an instant. His cock pumping as he nuzzled his head in your neck
𝑺𝒊𝒓 𝑷𝒆𝒓𝒄𝒊𝒗𝒂𝒍
・He was adamant that he wanted you after marriage
・But as soon as you were pronounced married, you walked down the aisle and Percival led you into the closest room
・No matter your size, he easily picked you up in his strong arms and you wrapped your legs around his waist
・Percival had such an intense look in his eyes, like he was trying to convey how much he wanted you
・You were up against a wall, your clothes bundled up, and he was kissing you so intently
・And then the door opened and someone walked in
“Oh, oh I’m -” Merlin closed the door and you could hear his fast footsteps on the stone floor
𝑺𝒊𝒓 𝑬𝒍𝒚𝒂𝒏
・Guinevere had given Elyan their mother’s ring so that he could propose to you.
・You were both going to wait until your wedding night, but your heart felt too full to tear apart from Elyan’s grasp
・He laid you down by the candlelight and kissed your entire body, not leaving an inch unkissed.
・Intense would be the best word to describe Elyan’s love-making.
・He truly believes that whoever you have sex with, a part of your soul is forever entwined with them
・He held one of your hands, fingers interlaced together the whole time.
・He praised you that first night, and he’s been doing so ever since

-
Entering the gates into Camelot, you felt your chest fill with anticipation, excitement and anxiety. This was the beginning of a new start for you, and you had no idea how it would go.
It took a lot to convince yourself to accept Gwen's offer of a place at the palace. You weren't sure if that was what you wanted. But as your village grew smaller and smaller, and you had no one left there, you decided it was time to start again, even if it would be hard.
Spotting Gwen waiting for you near the market stalls, you grinned and waved your hand in the air.
You had met Gwen when you were a lot younger, when you and your father had come into Camelot for a fair. The two of you had become fast friends and often wrote letters to one another over the years.
When she saw you, she quickly made her was towards you wrapping you in a hug as soon as she reached you.
"Oh, I'm so glad you made it safely, how was your journey?"
"Long, but not too hard luckily. I managed to befriend a few travelers who brought me a great distance on their carriage."
"Oh good! Well, come on, I have so much to show you, the market and palace has changed quite a lot since you last visited."
"I've heard much. King Arthur, certainly seems to be making a difference all across the kingdom."
After she showed you around the market, you stopped outside the palace walls to discuss the options for jobs you could take.
Stopping mid sentence as you heard a familiar voice, you looked around, your eyes stopping on a passing group of knights.
As one of the men laughed, and turned to look back at another knight, you felt your heart drop and your breath catch it your throat.
Gwen, seeing your sudden change in demeanor, followed your gaze.
"Gwaine?" You muttered, shock and uncertainty obvious in your tone.
"Do you know Gwaine?" Gwen asked.
You turned to look at her, and she could see the obvious shock on your face. You nodded your head lightly as you looked back here he had just been, seeing he was gone, again.
"He- we- we were.."
Gwen frowned before she gently grabbed your arm "Wait, is Gwaine the one you told me about? The man who disappeared?"
You nodded again, feeling overwhelming emotions course through you.
Gwen, able to see this, gently tugged your arm "Come on."
Ushering you to her cottage where she was allowing you to stay for some time, she gave you a few moments to gather your thoughts as she sat beside you. You had told her briefly what had happened a few years previous, but you never told her Gwaine's name, or exactly what had happened.
Taking a deep breath, you looked over at her as she waited patiently across from you.
"Around five years ago, a man came into our village. He was injured after a skirmish with some bandits in the forest. Gwaine. My father allowed him into our home, and we helped him recover. During that time, to repay us for our kindness, he helped us around the house, helping my father fix the roof, work his job when he was sick. Eventually, me and Gwaine fell in love. Oh Gwen I loved him so much. But I was always afraid he would feel the need to leave again. Nothing ever seemed to keep him in place, he was a traveler, he love adventure. A quiet village life was not appealing to him, I knew that. After some time, he reassured me he would not leave me. That he loved me. He even told me that he would marry me one day." You looked down at your hands "And I believed him. I truly did, and I do think he did love me. But...he was never the type to settle."
You stood up and walked over to the window, trying to repress the tears that were forming in your eyes.
"One day, after about a year and a half of being in the village, he left to go to a nearby town to get supplies. But he never returned. I waited every day for him to come back. But he never did. So I waited for a letter, but never received one. I decided he must have been killed. Because the idea that he chose to leave me, hurt too much. But now....he's here, and he's a knight nonetheless." You let out a soft almost scornful laugh. "Now I know, I was not enough to make him stay."
Gwen rose and walked over to you, gently placing her hands on your arm "I'm so sorry Y/n. I had no idea. I mean...Gwaine has mentioned a great love in the past, but...I suppose he was too ashamed to say anything else."
"How long has he been here?"
Gwen thought for a moment "Nearly two years I think."
You nodded "I mourned him Gwen. Every day."
Gwen sighed "What will you do?"
"I don't know" You shook your head "Maybe I should not stay here."
"You mustn't let him chase you away Y/n. You need a new place to start over, where else would you go?"
You turned and looked at her "I don't know. But...I'm afraid."
She pulled you into a hug "I know. But perhaps this could give you your answers, and you can move on, stop mourning." Pulling away, she met your gaze "Please stay. For a week at least, and if after that you still want to leave, I will support your decision."
You thought for a moment, uncertainty still coursing through you. You really did have no where else to go.
Letting out a shaky breath, you nodded "Alright. I'll stay, for now."
She smiled softly "Good."
"What do I do if I run into him though?" You asked with a sightly panicked expression.
She shrugged her head slightly "Slap him?"
You let out a laugh and shook your head "I would be lying if I said he wouldn't deserve it."
Looking out the window again, you feared what would happen when you saw him again. What would be his answer to your long asked question. 'Why did you leave me?'
--- ---- --- ---
Over the next few days, you managed to avoid seeing Gwaine all together. You were not ready to face him. So when the knights left on a short scouting quest, you felt relieved you would not have to peer around every corner, at least for a short time.
You and Gwen walked through the market picking up supplies for dinner. Looking through some vegetables in a basket on the ground, you froze in place when you heard a familiar voice call out.
"Hello Gwen, how are you today?"
Gwen, looked down at you with an alarmed look before looking over at Gwaine as he approached.
"Gwaine! I thought you were on the scouting trip with the other knights?"
"Oh I got the easiest part, I'm already done." You could practically hear the grin in his voice as he spoke.
Standing, but with your back still towards him, you felt your hands beginning to shake as nervousness washed over you.
As Gwen spared you a brief look, Gwaine looked over her shoulder. He felt his heart jump a bit as he recalled the similarity to someone he had once known.
"Who's your friend?" He asked with an uncertain voice as he stared a the back of your head.
'Oh, um-" Gwen stuttered as she looked back to you.
You clenched the basket in your hands tighter as you let out a shaky breath. Slowly turning around you spoke, your voice soft, yet full of obvious emotion.
"You used to know my name."
As you turned and Gwaine's eyes fell on your once familiar gaze, he felt his heart clench in his chest. Your eyes were still the beautiful shade he would recall at night when he thought of you. Your voice still sent chills through him. You were still you.
"Y/n." He muttered softly, mouth agape.
"Ah, so you do still know it." You said softly, yet scornfully as you looked briefly down at your feet.
Looking back up at him, you met his eyes with an attempt at a cold gaze, but the tears that threatened to build caused a shine to glaze over your eyes, revealing your true emotions.
"Nice to see you're still alive."
Gwaine frowned slightly at this comment before recalling that he gave you no word of his whereabouts after he left. A familiar guilt rocked through him, causing him to take a deep breath in.
"Y/n." He repeated, a bit louder this time.
Clearing your throat, you turned and handed money to the clerk at the stall. Looking back at Gwen you forced a smile "I think that should do us for dinner then."
Gwen nodded, looking from you to Gwaine nervously, as she watched you begin to leave.
"Y/n, wait!" Gwaine quickly stepped past Gwen and grabbed your hand, stopping you.
As you felt his hand in yours, you felt your heart swell, but you yanked your hand away, turning towards him with a bold gaze.
"You don't get to demand me to wait after what you put me through."
Gwaine faltered, his voice was low "Y/n. Leaving you was the hardest thing I ever did."
"And yet you seemed to do it so easily." You said scornfully.
You saw him flinched a bit at your words but you would not allow yourself to feel guilt
Just as he opened his mouth to speak, you cut him off "I thought you died."
Your voice came out softly than you meant, and you saw his eyes widen slightly.
"I convinced myself that was the only thing that would stop you from coming back home. But now I see I was wrong. You chose to leave and never come back. And now your a knight? Something you swore you'd never be?" You scoffed as you stepped back from him "What else did you lie to me about?"
Gwaine began to follow after you as you turned away to leave, but Gwen grabbed his arm. Looking back at her, she shook her head "Not now Gwaine, give them some time."
"How long have they been here?"
"A few days. Y/n saw you in the courtyard the day they arrived, it's been a lot to process."
Gwaine looked back to see you disappeared at the end of the road. Guilt sat heavily in his chest, he needed to talk to you again, to explain. There was no good excuse, he knew that, but he needed you to now how much he regretted what he did. He needed you to know how much he still loved you.
--- --- ---
Gwaine's eyes searched through the trees as he looked for you. He managed to find out you had gone out to gather herbs, and he was determined to speak with you.
Finally spotting you through the trees, he made his way over to you. His steps were hurried, so he was not able to sneak up on you.
Turning at the sound of footsteps, you saw Gwaine falter for a moment as you looked at him. Your heart jolted in your chest, but you looked away from him, quickly picking the herbs you were after.
Finally reaching you, he stood behind you for a moment before he finally spoke "Y/n, I wish to speak with you."
You remained silent as you continued to walk to gather other herbs. Gwaine let out a sigh but followed you.
"Y/n please., I want to explain." He begged as he followed you. Reaching out, he grabbed your arms and forced you to turn and look at him.
You met his eyes and or a moment he saw your gaze soften, before it was quickly replaced with hurt.
"Please Y/n." He said again, his voice soft as he stared into your eyes.
Your heart was hammering in your chest as he looked at you. His familiar gaze, even wracked with guilt made you heart beat fast. The way he stared at you, as though he still cared for you like he used to made your heart ache.
"Don't look at me like that." You muttered out, almost in a whisper.
"Like what?"
"Like you still love me."
Gwaine felt his heart ache at this, your face so full of hurt, and doubt, all of it he caused. He frowned as he shook his head lightly "I do still love you."
You closed your eyes tightly as you pulled away from his grip "Then why did you leave me?"
Gwaine hesitated for a moment before he sighed "For no good reason. I just...after I left the village, I felt the desire to keep going, to keep moving again, and I just...didn't stop. But that doesn't mean I did not love you."
You let out a soft huff of air. "If you loved me you would have come back." You voice began to grow in anger.
"I did come back."
You frowned "What?"
"I did come back. After a month, but I- I saw you, outside the cottage, with your father, laughing. And I thought, that maybe I didn't hurt you as much as I thought I did. And I thought that maybe it would best if I didn't barge back in again."
You shook your head "My father makes one joke to cheer me up after I thought the love of my life either abandoned me or died, and you thought that I meant I was better off? Gwaine, I was devastated. I waited outside the cottage for you for months. Every day for weeks, I walked down to the river to look for you, hoping that I might see you come over the hill with a grin on your face. Every day you didn't come back broke my heart more and more!"
Gwaine's own eyes were burning with the threat of tears as you spoke to him. He could see the pain he caused in your eyes like it was a fresh wound.
"You don't know what it was like, being alone after that." You let out a soft whimper as you spoke.
"But you had your father to help y-"
"He's dead." You cut him off. "He died four months after you disappeared, I've been alone ever since."
You saw the realization and pain cross over his face. He stepped back as he looked down at his feet. He and you father got along great, you new it would hurt him to learn he died.
"I was alone, and I needed you." You added on once more, as tears streamed down your face.
Gwaine met yours eyes against and his heart broke. Stepping forward, he grabbed you and pulled you into his chest, wrapping his arms around you.
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry." He muttered into your shoulder.
For a moment, you allowed him to hold you, allowing yourself the one thing you wanted for so long. Before you pulled away from him.
He watched as you stepped back, giving him one last look before you walked away. He watched you go, and even though everything in him was screaming to chase after you, he didn't.
--- --- ---
Adrenaline rushed through you as you rushed through the crowds, everyone was running in different directions trying to get somewhere safe.
Making your way down the street towards Gwen's home, your eyes landed on one of the soldiers who had attacked Camelot. One of the knights of an enemy kingdom, hoping to catch King Arthur off guard.
At the same time that your eyes landed on him, his met yours. You saw a smirk cross his face. Looking around, you realized you were the only one around now, everyone else had fled.
Looking to the ground, you saw a deceased soldier. Quickly grabbing his sword, you spun back towards the enemy soldier who was stalking towards you. You kept your blade out in threat as you backed away.
Your breath was heavy as your hands shook, you were not a soldier, you were not a knight, why was he coming after you?
A voice whispered in the back of your mind that made your skin crawl 'He just wants to kill'
Suddenly lunging at you, you blocked his attack, but stumbled back. Quickly, he knocked the sword from your grasp and hit you in the face before grabbed you. Pulling your arm back, you punched him in the face as hard as you could before stomping on his foot, trying your best to get away from him. You yelled out as you struggled in his grip.
As Gwaine rushed through the streets to locate anymore of the enemy soldiers. His eyes were drawn at the sound of a yell.
Looking down the road, he felt his heart drop and stomach twist as he saw one of the soldiers grappling with you. He began running towards you, watching as you hit, and fought against the man. His blood boiled as the soldier yanked at you violently.
As the man lifted his sword, preparing to strike you down, you clenched your eyes shut. Hearing a clank of metal before the man groaned and let you go. You stumbled back, opening your eyes.
You saw Gwaine step in front of you as he began to fight the man. You felt relief and worry wash over you as you pressed yourself against the wall, and watched as Gwaine fought to protect you.
After a few minutes of fighting, Gwaine dealt a deadly blow. You flinched and looked away.
"Y/n?"
Hearing Gwaines voice, you looked back up to see him slowly approaching you.
"Are you alright?"
Coming back to your senses, you nodded "Yes, I'm alright."
Gwaine sighed as he came up to you, gently taking your hand in his. Looking around, he gently tugged on your hand "Come on, let's get you somewhere safe."
Following his lead, you looked down at your intertwined hands, feeling a once familiar spark of intimacy and safety.
Finding your way back to Gwen's home, he ushered you inside, looking around, you spoke with a worried tone "Where's Gwen?"
"I saw her in the palace, she's alright."
You let out a sigh of relief as you sat down in a chair, lowering your head in relief and exhaustion. Seeing Gwaine kneel down in front of you, you slowly looked up at him.
He had a frown on his face as he slowly reached up, taking your face in his hand. He gently caressed is thumb over the mark left on your face from the soldier.
You saw guilt, and anger wash over his face before he met your eyes. As your eyes locked, you felt a familiar warmth build in your chest, reminding you of the day you and Gwaine had first kissed.
You had been injured when thrown from a horse, and Gwaine came to help you. You had mud on your face and he brushed it away. Your eyes locked, and before you really knew it, you were kissing. It was he beginning of your relationship, of your great love.
Gwaine was surely thinking the same thing, as his eyes gently fell to your lips.
Seeing this, you felt nervous, and reminded yourself of what your relationship with him now was.
Looking down a your feet, you spoke softly "Should you not go back? Surely others need help."
Gwaine let you a soft breath "Most of the soldiers were captured or killed, the one who hurt you was one of the last. I'm not going to leave you."
Seeing the way your eyes shot to him momentarily, he felt his chest clench.
He gently caressed your chin "I wont. Not again."
Placing his hand in yours, you let out a soft breath and shook your head before you looked back up at him.
"You can't just charm me back into your good graces Gwaine."
A soft, almost sad smile crossed his face "I know."
"I wont force you to come back to me. I understand that I hurt you. And I deserve all the anger in the world for what I did. I just need you to know that I do still love you, I never stopped. And I will always be here if you need me. We can both make Camelot our home. And eventually, if you want to, we can start again. Because I will be right here, waiting."
"I-" You started, before letting out a sigh "I do still love you Gwaine, no matter how much you hurt me, I could never stop."
You saw hope fall over his face and you softly shook your head.
"But I am not ready to forgive you, not yet. We are both different people now, it would not be the same."
Gwaine's face fell a bit, but he nodded in understanding. "I understand. But believe me Y/n, I wont give up. We are back in each others lives for a reason. Whether it is fate, a second chance, or just coincidence, I will do whatever I need to do to make sure I don't lose you again. And I will wait however long it takes."
As he slowly began to stand, he tilted your head up, before pressing a soft kiss to your forehead. You close you eyes briefly at the action.
When you opened them again, he was staring down softly into your eyes "Stay in here, to be safe. I will come back to check on you shortly, I need to make sure the attack is over."
Nodding wordlessly, you watched him go. And as he left, you did not doubt he would come back. And the previous anger you felt for him had faded. You could not forgive him yet, but you knew you would.
And you couldn't help but wonder what would happen after you did.
xx End xx
Could possibly do a second part to this at some point if people want it.
