Therapy Session 10/3/2023
I'm writing about today's therapy session because there's some things I want to remember. This blog also acts as a journal for things related to being a queer Mormon, and going to therapy for an eating disorder is related.

I shared about the hard time I had while in Utah when two lovely people had come to meet me. My leg had fallen asleep and I couldn't get up. A strong Samoan guy had to help. I was so embarrassed. All the feelings of shame about my body, my weight, my eating disorder, of worrying how others view me and wanting to be accepted and loved, all of that came rushing in.
I also shared about this past weekend and General Conference and the homophobic messages and the suggestion that addictions to food are offensive to God. The strong feelings caused me to give into my disordered eating. And even as I was binging, I was mad about it.
He helped me reframe how I think about those instances, highlighting the progress I've made. Being mad as I was binging is an indication that I'm wanting to choose a different destiny, to effect change, and that desire will help me do so. He took it as a very positive emotion in that moment.
We also talked about ways of defusing those emotions and thoughts. We reviewed some pages in a book which I think were helpful.
I shared that when I write about those feelings, it takes these big, amorphous feelings and defines them. They're still powerful but now I'm pouring them into a blog post or onto a page, and that's where they live.

At the end of our session, he surprised me. He remembered that I'm a gay Latter-day Saint and he was doing some research and wanted to talk about something he found with me.
He shared that Jesus said, "Whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will find it." He asked me what my thoughts are on this.
I talked about how if I try to live up to other people's ideas of who I should be and what my life should look like, that it's not my life, I'm living theirs. By trying to save the community and connections I have, I wind up losing myself. But if I am willing to risk losing my community and those who say I must live a certain, I get to live authentic to my heart and beliefs and to who I am, in that way I gain my life.

He had been thinking of the story I shared of having bilateral pulmonary embolism (blood clots in both lungs) and welcoming what I saw as a chance for death. Then deciding to go the hospital where I was put in intensive care and began a year of recovery.
This story helped him see the difference between fate and destiny. Fate is something that happens to us, destiny is something we choose. We can choose to give into our fate. I was fated to have a serious health issue and I wanted to give in and let it end my life. Destiny was deciding to deal with the circumstances, to make choices to move forward towards something different.
I think most queer Mormons do this. We have been fated to be queer, and we are taught a narrative which says we're defective and unworthy and offensive to God. But at some point we say this doesn't serve me, I don't feel this in my heart, and we start making choices to a different belief or a different path, and in that way we lose the life we thought we must have and instead gain a life true for us. We decide that it is better to live

Thinking about history and family and queerness. How they were real and they were people, with lives like ours. How being queer has always existed for as long as humanity has, and long before that too.
A little viking girl and her mother and her father sat around the fire whilst they tell her the stories of the gods and their children, and her mother shuffles over to her, pulling the new blanket she made over the little girl's shoulder, and her dad let's the little girl touch his sword and tilt it to see the flashes of the fire light on the metal, all whilst telling her to be careful of the sharp edges.
An Ancient Egyptian teenage boy running around, catching lizards to show his toddler sister as his mother warns him about not letting the lizards bite him or the girl.
A victorian father holding his newborn twins in his arms as he can't stop smiling, the midwife passing his wife some tea as she congratulates both of them.
A babylonian girl kissing her best friend behind the local bookshop, and she kisses her back.
A tudor girl putting on her brother's trousers and tucking her hair under a hat and realising maybe she prefers looking like him.
An Aztec father combing the hair of his wife and children whilst they sleep, leaving a little braid in each, even the fuzzy wisps of his newest daughter.
An American Indigenous community teaching the newest generation how to weave, dance, hunt, clean hide, and make jewellery.
An Ancient Chinese girl having her older sister do her makeup and then running off to show her friends.
A little medieval boy tugging on his mother's skirt because he wants to help his dad plough the soil, or at least help pick the vegetables because he just wants to help make the work a little less on his dad.
A Britonic Celt mother teaching her son how to braid hair by demonstrating on his dad.
A Samoan teenager telling their parents they don't feel like one gender alone and their parents celebrating because they love their child no matter what.
Just thinking about how all of humanity repeats the same things over and over again, how no matter how long ago or where they were, we have done the same things all the time, exist all the time, forever.

A few memories of my recent trip to Utah
I spent 4 days in Utah as part of a trip to attend the Gather Conference.
I receive more hugs on these short trips to Utah than I get the rest of the year. I think the average queer Latter-day Saint is touch-starved and we need more opportunities to hug, to have someone put their arm around us, and so on. Touch is a way of feeling connected.
Being with others who see me for who I am is healing. I don't have many people in my regular life with whom I can share all aspects of my life. It is such a relief to fully be myself with others and know they will accept and love me.
It's happened on previous trips to Utah, but this time more people introduced themselves and said they know me from my blog, from the chapter I wrote in a book, from the Lift+Love group I host, from podcasts I've been on, and so on. Mostly it's kind people just wanting to say "hi," and I love that, and I like to learn more about them and hear their stories. I do feel a little awkward if someone acts like I'm famous and they are fangirling. I'm just a regular dude who happened to have some opportunities to share his story.
Even though I said I don't like when others fangirl me, I found an exception where I liked it because it felt so validating. There was a moment when Ben Schilaty & I happened to be alone and I took the opportunity to introduce myself as David and thanked him for his visibility, that the work he does helps increase understanding. I've been following him since he participated on a panel of LGBT BYU students about 5 years ago. I've read his blog, his book and I listen to his podcast.
He responded by thanking me and it's nice to hear he's making an impact. He looked down at my badge with my name on it and he goes, "David Doyle! You're David Doyle! I know you!!! You had the thing in 2017 that went around! You're from Florida! You had the thing last year with Elder Renlund! You're amazing! David Doyle! I am finally meeting you! Allison Dayton says the best things about you!"
The rest of the conference, if we happened to be passing each other, he'd say "David Doyle!" as he walked by. It was cute. At the end of the conference, when the crowds had thinned, I was getting ready to gather my stuff and leave but Ben comes over and says, "I've been wanting to talk with you but I've been so busy." We had a few minutes and recognized each other as being on the same team in doing this work. He's prominent in this intersection of LDS & LGBTQ+, and it was surprising to have him know who I am.
Friday evening a woman came running over and hugged me. 30 years ago I was a teacher at the Missionary Training Center and she was one of the missionaries I taught. This was her first time attending such a conference for LDS/LGBTQ people, she was there because two of her kids have come out, and she was so excited to see a familiar face. It was an amazing reunion.
The RaYnbow Collective put on a Pride event on Saturday in the park behind where I used to live in the 1990's as a BYU student. 30 years ago I could never have imagined this happening in Provo. I had to go as a way to honor my younger, closeted self. The drag show was a lot of fun, very energetic!
There were no seats for the drag show, the audience sat on the ground, and my leg fell asleep. I couldn't get up. Some strong Samoan guy had to help. I was so embarrassed. I'm a very big guy and that certainly played a factor. Even after getting up, my balance was not right and I had to keep holding onto people in order to remain upright. I even needed help walking to the car.
All the feelings of shame about my body, my weight, my eating disorder, of worrying how others view me and wanting to be accepted and loved, all of that came rushing in. At the hotel I asked my friend @loveerran to take all the food from my room because of my eating disorder, but I still felt my feelings and had a good cry. I try hard not to let my social anxiety or body image or weight issues keep me from participating in life, but that night I wanted to hide away and never be seen again. The human mind sometimes is unkind to ourselves.
Despite that unfortunate episode at the park, I treasure this trip and all the people I met and friends I reconnected with. I returned to Florida with my batteries recharged, my resilience strengthened, and feeling seen & validated.

The war is over, or so everyone thinks. When retrieving the Blue Lion for Princess Allura, they happen to find a paladin. A boy band memeber from the same famous rock band Keith Kogane, Krolia's secret, no-longer lost son.
When they travel back to Arus after the runaway lion, they find that five of those six band members qualify as paladins. The other, a tech genius and capable leader in his own right.
And its just in time as well.
The mess left behind after Zarkon died is even more unstable then anyone thought, and they face new enemies like never before. Are they able to train new paladins in time, deal with upset Earth hostilities because a giant sentient ship kidnapped civilians and beloved celebrities for fighting in a war, and they all become strong enough as teams and allies in the face of an enemy they underestimated?
Can they judge who to trust in this roiling landscape?
Will the paladins see their family again?
Can the coalition get unitied for equal goals?
Can any of the rebellion actually deal with a set of cryptid-like pop stars?
Will Krolia's son forgive her?
Will Keith stop eating things with a butter knife?

(Data-Processing-System Guide & Meta-Narrative Paracosm of Klara Kér)
PREFACE
As a transfem queer autistic INTJ, I feel like writing my very own fictional world, alongside its documentation, adventure/mystery stories and all things meta-narrative / shared universe design* would be a great use of my time, at least whilst I still got plenty to go by.
So I am gonna summarize to you somewhat what is described in my reality scripting + fictional worldbuilding documents got as I continuously revise them for easier reading and stronger manifestation. It still connects with the other things I write down on this blog, just in a subtler and more implicit manner.
It probably will be a cozy van add-venture across the planet that Angora is, as to document that alternative world as of its 46th century into a analog encyclopedia. Using a erudite fem autistic protagonist & her social interpreter synthetic "serf" as the core characters to focus onto, I will emulate my dream life.
And as to show you my worldview and provide some constructive value* back to this world of ours, I will divide this into several lists, grouped into four categories (approximately).

it’s time to uproot our lives!
Hey all!!
So I've been delaying making an announcement but I can't hold it back anymore... My fiancée and I are moving to American Samoa at the end of July! She has accepted a job as an assistant attorney general for a two year contact with the possibility to renew. (I'm in awe of her too!!! Seriously, everyone please give a billion rounds of applause for this amazing human being who I've somehow convinced to spend her life with me!) She went to high school in India and has experience with extreme (for us) heat and humidity, but I super duper do not, so prepare for a litany of distressed bellowing as my brains melt out of my ears.

I'll be a house husband temporarily while I look for a job, then hopefully find either paralegal work or something in that arena with legal aid services there. But regardless of my employment situation I'll be spending a LOT of time exploring Pago Pago and the island of Tutuila, and hopefully the surrounding islands as much as I can. My hope is to start a travel blog to keep our families and friends up to date with our adventures, and you are all of course welcome to read it! We haven't made it yet, but I will post the link here once it's up. Let us know if you have any requests or ideas for what that sort of webpage should include! Photos and stories I assume, but what else? Maybe Samoan language updates? Advice for anyone who plans to visit in the future?

How do you survive extreme and constant humidity?
Do any of you happen to be Samoan speakers or have resources on learning? I’m looking at various textbooks, but any information is helpful!
Does anyone have experience with finding queer community in Samoa or the Pacific Islands more generally? We know it’s not welcoming and will be staying safe, but it would be amazing to hang out with other LGBT people while we’re there. This goes double if anyone knows about finding the trans community! There’s organizations for fa’afafine, but as far as I am able to tell trans men aren’t really on the radar there.
Would you be interested in knowing our address there? We’re going to be assigned government housing and don’t have it yet, but I can definitely share if you want. Any letters or care packages would be incredible. There is no coffee to be found there, so we’ll sell our tarnished souls for it!

The issue with having a post-heteronormative, racially mixed world written by people living now
I just had a thought about voltron and how the showrunners have said that they imagine the future it's set in to be post-heteronormativity and to have no homophobia, and while that's a nice thought, there's certain aspects of the show that ought to be different if that were true.
For one, Lance's desire of being a ladies' man wouldn't exist, or if it did, it would be more of an everybody's man. In a world with no heteronormativity, no one would assume ppl are straight so everyone would operate under the idea that anybody could be with anybody when it came to romance. Of course there would be straight people and gay people, but if anything people would be assumed to be pan or bi as they grew up until their sexualities/preferences began to manifest.
Now of course, the audience watching this does live in a heteronormative world, so in order to communicate certain things--such as Lance's desire to be a suave heartbreaker--they have to adhere to the audience's sensibilities, assumptions, and biases so that they understand. As a result, the world they built will still reflect the cultural attitudes and biases of the real world.
I think that's a major issue with people trying to create worlds that imagine a more progressive future. They end up failing in some aspect because their audience may not understand or like what they're trying to do. It's sad, but true.
Another problem is that with worlds such as these, or worlds that are imagined to have more racial diversity as Voltron also does, many aspects of the different cultures are lost. Lance missing Mamá's cooking is traded for Meemaw's cooking, Tío Lance is traded for Uncle Lance, the characters are forced to take on the norms and ideas of the hegemonic culture, that of White anglo-saxon cisgender heterosexual patriarchal protestant capitalist able-bodied neurotypical folks. This is also true in regards to sexuality, because queer culture is different and has its own norms and worldview from straight culture. True diversity is traded for only the appearance of diversity, as in the same kind of person with the same ideas and worldviews just in different colors--like froot loops.
Imo, what would be more progressive is for a show to talk about these things in universe, to have coming out scenes and explicit gender and sexuality labels, and to have specific examples of different cultures. They sort of did this with Hunk, as I assume (or really hope) that the meal he and his mom were cooking in his flashback was a traditional Samoan dish. Otherwise these things are lost to the audience and they can continue to have their biases without being challenged.
I appreciate the showrunners' efforts and I don't blame them at all, this is just an observation of mine. Hopefully future shows will be able to accomplish what Voltron set out to do.
