IN WHERE ::
satoru gojo comes home after a long day at work absolutely tired and bruised, seeking comfort in your arms.

THE DOOR CLICKED SHUT and you could hear him taking off his shoes. it was another late night when you tried to stay awake to welcome your boyfriend home, but you were yet again unable to keep your eyes open.
he found you curled up on the couch with a blanket over you, but you had woken up by the sound of the door closing and you immediately rushed to his side. “hi, my love—“ you stopped in the middle of your sentence when you saw the unmistakable hurt expression on his face.
something was wrong.
your hands cautiously reached for his face, cupping it. he subconsciously leaned into your right hand, his eyes failing to meet yours and you were immediately able to figure out why. he didn’t want you to see him like this. as if he was weak, as if he had failed.
you said, "hey," in a gentle tone that made him feel calm and at ease. the terrible headache had begun as soon as he made his way to your shared apartment. he was unable to stop thinking about his late best friend's final moments as they continued to play back in his mind. this caused his thoughts to stray and consider the risk he was putting you in simply because you were his girlfriend. he feared he might end up being a burden for you.
“you’re alright now. are you willing to talk about it?” you had secretly hoped that he would agree to talk since you were so curious about what was going through his mind, though it wasn't a hard guess.
however, he mumbled a quiet no, and with that, you nodded courteously and took his hand in yours. guiding him to the bathroom where you pointed at the counter for him to sit. without a second thought, he obeyed your command and took a seat. the much taller and much more powerful man had suddenly seemed so fragile. so, tired.
you took out the first aid kit from one of the cabinets and set it down beside him. after opening the kit, you took out some patches and rubbing alcohol. his head was cocked to the side to reveal the cut as your hand gently made contact with his jaw. considering that he possessed the infinity technique, it was peculiar for him to return home hurt. and if not, he had the option of visiting shoko to receive healing without the need for any ordinary medical attention.
you had no idea that gojo's only desire was to be cared for and to feel your touch.
before applying the rubbing alcohol-soaked patch to his face, you gave him a heads-up saying "this might sting a little." gojo did not make any movement. rather, his hand reached for your hand that was set on his jaw.
once you finished stitching him up, you gave him a soft kiss on the cheek. he pouted at that and pointed to his lips, earning him a soft laugh from you. you took a step forward and delicately kissed him, your arms around his neck. you leaned backwards, your eyes finding his.
"how about you take a shower and we'll call it a night?" you propositioned, your head tilting to the side and a soft smile was displayed on your face.
"are you saying that i smell?"
your eyes widened at that and you jokingly slapped his arm. "no, you idiot. i'm saying that a shower will help you relax and then we'll go to sleep. i know you're not ready to tell me what happened, so we can just wait until tomorrow. you need some rest."
and in this exact moment, gojo realized that he didn't know what he did to deserve you.
he didn't have to pretend around you. he didn't have to put on the act of making silly jokes and pretending to be fine just because he was the strongest.
no. with you, he was 'toru.
your 'toru.
after his shower, you both found your way to your shared bed. he held you so close to him, but you didn't complain. you couldn't. it was the only way gojo was sure that nothing would happen to you once he closed his eyes, and even so, he still tried to look out for you with his senses.
"hey, y/n." satoru said, loud enough for you to hear but also to soothe you to sleep. "yes?"
"would you still love me if i was a frog and there was no way i could turn into a human?"
usually, you would've rolled your eyes at his silly nighttime questions and told him to go to sleep. but this time, you knew that he needed you to answer. because this wasn't just a silly question. no, he was indirectly asking you if you aren't tired of him.
"i would love you. and in every other universe, i would find my way to you and kiss you once more."
"i love you."
"i love you too. now, rest."

Fic: To Truly Live
Loghain struggles to find a new purpose in the aftermath of the Rebellion.
DRAGON AGE | MARIC/LOGHAIN | WORDS: 1717 | RATED T. (AO3 LINK)
A tent,” the King said flatly, arms crossed over his chest as he scrutinised Loghain’s makeshift abode. “You intend to live in a tent forever?”
Until recent events, Loghain had been able to read Maric like one of his favourite maps, the contours of Maric’s face as familiar as the hills of Ferelden. Today, attempting to decipher Maric felt akin to interpreting sodden vellum, symbols and contour lines blending and blurring until all Loghain could see before him was a stranger wearing the skin of his best friend.
Maker’s breath, the King’s voice itself sounded different from the tones to which Loghain had grown accustomed, boasting an unmistakable undercurrent of grit and steel even though only several scant weeks had passed since they had last been in one another’s company. How could so much have changed in so little time?
The prickling heat of frustration crawled up Loghain’s throat; while it was far from the first time he’d felt this way around Maric, such occurrences had decreased in frequency over the years. “Of course not,” he snapped, still unsure of Maric’s anticipated answer. Was it possible that the King had come all this way from Denerim simply to insult him? It seemed an unlikely proposition to be sure, and yet Loghain was tormented by the possibility all the same.
“Well, that’s a relief,” Maric said, eyes searching Loghain’s face imploringly. When Loghain failed to answer, the corner of Maric’s mouth curled upwards. “I’d hate to think what you’d do come winter.”
The radiance of Maric’s smile broke down the walls of Loghian’s fortified anxiety, flooding him with a pervasive sense of warmth that annihilated everything in its wake and left nothing behind other than an indescribable relief. To think there had been a time when he had been only frustrated by Maric’s japes; to think there would come to be a time when Loghain would grow to miss them! He took a breath, forcing his shoulders to relax. Perhaps not as much had changed as he had feared.
Following Loghain’s gaze, Maric quipped, “I think it’s going to rain. But that’s the point, isn’t it?”
Loghain floundered, having completely lost Maric’s train of thought. “What?”
“The point,” Maric repeated, attention still focused on the sky. “It’s no longer about survival. We won, Loghain. It’s time we started to truly live.”
Struggling to make sense of the words—which made perfect sense in isolation but were near nonsensical in sequence—Loghain simply stared at Maric instead. His King’s attention was still focused on the sky. Straggling rays of sunshine broke briefly through the gathered clouds, catching upon Maric’s eyelashes which glittered like hidden treasure. It was a startling contrast to the relative pallor of the rest of his face, which was white and withdrawn except for the dusting of pink atop his wind-flushed cheeks. The chill in the air was biting, and Loghain swept his tongue quickly over his own chapped lips. “What does it mean,” he started, the words heavy with a weight he could not define, “what does it mean? To truly live?”
When Maric averted his gaze from the heavens to answer, Loghain realised he had been staring. Their eyes locked, the moment stretching into infinity, isolated in time and space by a force no more surmountable than gravity itself. Loghain didn’t want to move on; didn’t want to rebuild his life anew; they had achieved everything they had once fought for, but in the end, Loghain was alone. Alone, except for the brunt of an invisible burden and the lingering aftertaste of a victory so bittersweet it overwhelmed any other flavours on his tongue.
By his side, his fingers twitched. He wanted this moment to last forever. He wanted, he wanted, he wanted—
Overhead, thunder rumbled and rolled, drowning out all other thought. It was a hungry noise, both threat and promise. Loghain finally diverted his attention from Maric just in time for the deluge to begin. Water poured down upon them from the heavens above, with ferocious raindrops buoyed by the biting wind that slashed at their skin like hailstones.
Maric laughed, a grin spreading across his face as he lifted an arm above his brow in a futile attempt to shield himself from the onslaught. Loghain could drown himself in that smile, and yet he had never felt more alive. Despite the chill of the wind, he found some of his own burden lightening in return. Fighting his own urge to smile, he started, “We should—
“—get inside?” Maric suggested. With impressive speed, he began scrambling in the direction of the ramshackle castle which was supposedly Loghain’s new home. He didn’t want to to go back there, but when he hesitated, Maric beckoned him impatiently. “Inside inside,” he insisted, as though it was possible Loghain had misunderstood, that he feared Loghain might be planning a retreat to his more temporary accommodations instead.
As it didn’t seem the time to explain that the castle was about as sturdy as the tent despite the timber and stone, Loghain wordlessly followed.
***
By the time they managed to get a fire going, sequestered away in one of the most habitable rooms of the castle’s ground floor, Maric and Loghain were both soaked to the bone. They were accustomed to a life of hiding in hillsides and trees: neither of them had much experience with the temperamental nature of a coastal climate.
“I told you it was going to rain,” Maric complained as he stoked the fire; it roared away better than either of them had anticipated, especially considering the overwhelming sense of damp that permeated the castle walls, and not to mention all the holes … it was most fortunate indeed that they’d located this room when they had.
“I’d prefer more notice next time,” Loghain retorted drily. Sat precariously on the edge of a long-abandoned trunk, he finally succeeded in tugging off his waterlogged boots. Without further ado, he moved onto unlacing his breeches. The cloth was already sticking to his thighs, weighed down by the damp, and he was half fearful it would mould itself permanently to his skin given the opportunity to do so. These last few weeks had been peculiar ones: even though he had grown accustomed to his own space, he did not for a second consider sending Maric away out of a desire for privacy. Truth be told, Loghain preferred having him there: Maric by his side was a comfort more than anything else. It was warm and familiar and he missed it.
Strange indeed to feel so nostalgic about some of the worst times of his life, of the struggles endured by young men as they had fought to liberate their country. But although Loghain wished he’d never had cause to meet Maric, the fact of the matter was that he had, and it had only been when he’d battled beside his friend that he’d felt truly alive.
This castle should’ve been a fortress, but to Loghain, it was a gravestone. What did he have to live for now? What did it mean to truly live?
Maric’s words continued to haunt him as he sat wordlessly before the fire, barely paying attention as Maric removed his own sodden clothing, stripping down to his smalls. Instead, Loghain stared intently at the hearth as though it might offer him the answers he desperately sought, but unsurprisingly, the flames refused to speak.
Loghain would have to find his own words to resolve this problem, lest he leave it unaddressed and seal his own fate, suffocating himself in the collapsing bricks of a home he had never wanted. Fortunately, he had never been the type of man to bend the knee to destiny.
Tongue still heavy, Loghain asked, “Why did you send me here?”
Out of the corner of his eye, Loghain could see Maric kneeling down by the fire, his sheer size and presence radiating a warmth that burned hotter than any flame. “What do you mean?” Maric asked, before adding with a chuckle, “What better present could I get you than a castle?”
Loghain scowled, his focus now resolutely attuned to a pile of dust by the wall. Obviously, it wasn’t so simple, but Maric knew that as well as he did. But what Maric apparently failed to understand was the exact complications of Loghain’s situation.
Maric stretched his arms above his head, content to continue rambling despite Loghain’s silence. “I know she’s a bit of a fixer-upper but I imagine you’ll see great improvements with a little love and care. You could even start with this room—”
“It isn’t the castle,” Loghain interrupted, reflexively furling and unfurling his fingers before realising he had no idea where to proceed from here. It wasn’t the castle that needed attention; he was the one who craved it. The frustration that had crept up his throat when Maric had examined his tent returned, so thick it threatened to choke him.
It was difficult to breathe, but nonetheless, Loghain persevered. Crossing his arms over his chest and refusing to meet Maric’s gaze, he continued. “It’s about the people who reside inside.”
“Wait, what?”
For once, Loghain had managed to take Maric by surprise instead of the other way around. He couldn’t back down, had to stay true to his trajectory. It was all so clear to him now, he could scarcely believe he had missed it before. He swivelled abruptly, grasping Maric by the shoulders. “I only ever wanted to be by your side,” he croaked.
For several long moments, Maric simply stared at the point their bodies touched, bare skin against skin. “Loghain,” he finally whispered, voice wrapping around the syllables of Loghain’s name like a prayer.
Loghain wasn’t sure which of them moved first, or if they indeed moved together, equally matched in this as they had always been on the battlefield; in any case, the details were irrelevant.
All that mattered now was that when Maric’s lips parted against his own, it felt like coming home.

Quote
Many thinkers shared the ideas of the Radical Enlightenment, but it was Spinoza who forced Europe to reckon with them, by rooting them in a new philosophical system of formidable scope and rigor. When Spinoza writes that democracy is “of all forms of government the most natural, and the most consonant with individual liberty,” and that the best antidote to superstition is the study of science, “since the less men know of nature the more easily can they coin fictitious ideas,” he isn’t simply stating opinions. The title page of his magnum opus, the “Ethics,” promises that his ideas will be “ordine geometrico demonstrata,” “demonstrated in the manner of geometry,” and, like Euclid, he presents his arguments in the form of numbered axioms and propositions. Once you accept Spinoza’s basic assumptions about God and the universe, his political and social ideas are supposed to be as self-evident as the Pythagorean theorem. At the center of Spinoza’s thought is a new way of understanding God. Indeed, his God was so different from the one worshipped in churches and synagogues that almost everyone who read him believed he was an atheist. But Spinoza indignantly rejected the charge of atheism, and nowhere in the “Ethics” does he deny the existence of God. What he denies is that God exists as a being or intelligence separate from the rest of the universe, as he is conceived of in Judaism and Christianity. Spinoza’s argument is disconcertingly simple. God is “a being absolutely infinite,” and the idea of infinity “involves no negation”: it would be contradictory to say that there is some quality an infinite being does not possess or some space it does not occupy. It is therefore impossible for God to be somewhere—up in Heaven, perhaps—but not here, where we are. If God exists, then he must be absolutely everywhere; not even our own bodies and minds can be separate from him. As Proposition XV of the “Ethics” famously states, “Whatsoever is, is in God, and without God nothing can be, or be conceived.” This idea is known as pantheism, from the Greek for “all” and “God.” One way of looking at pantheism is that it brings us closer to God than conventional religious belief ever could; in the nineteenth century, Romantic writers considered Spinoza a “God-intoxicated man.” But, if there is no difference or distance between God and the rest of the universe, then he cannot do any of the things that we ordinarily think of God as doing: hearing prayers, working miracles, creating the world with a “Let there be light.” Really, there is no compelling reason to call Spinoza’s infinite substance God in the first place. We might as well call it Being, or Everything, or Nature. In Part IV of the “Ethics,” Spinoza refers to “the eternal and infinite Being, which we call God or Nature”—in Latin, Deus sive natura. In closing the gap between humanity, God, and nature, Spinoza also does away with any space for free will. The infinite substance that is God appears to be constantly changing, yet always in accordance with what Spinoza calls “the necessity of his nature,” or what a scientist would call natural laws. The ancient Greek engineer Archimedes said that with a lever and a place to stand he could move the Earth, but in Spinoza’s universe there is no place outside nature where we can stand in order to exert force on it, since we ourselves are part of nature. This might sound like a fatalistic view of the world, and for later thinkers the idea that the universe is nothing but a mechanism in motion, constantly changing but never going anywhere, was a recipe for nihilism and despair. But one of the things that draws people to Spinoza, and makes him perhaps the most beloved philosopher since Socrates, is his confident equanimity. He argues that the highest happiness of which human beings are capable is seeing the universe “under the aspect of eternity,” which means understanding that everything is as it must be. When he writes that “blessedness is nothing else but the contentment of spirit, which arises from the intuitive knowledge of God,” he might sound like a mystic, but for him knowing God is not a supernatural experience but a rational one. It simply means knowing “the actions which follow from the necessity of his nature,” in the same way that knowing the law of gravity allows us to understand why an object thrown with a certain force will follow a certain trajectory. It is because Spinoza sees true understanding as the key to happiness that he insists on freedom of thought. When religious authorities tell people what to believe, they make it harder to achieve a correct idea of God, and thus block the road to blessedness. Spinoza advocated for democratic government because he thought that it was more likely than monarchy or aristocracy to preserve libertas philosophandi, and thus to make it possible for human beings to become happy. As he writes in the “Tractatus,” “The basis and aim of a democracy is to avoid the desires as irrational, and to bring men as far as possible under the control of reason, so that they may live in peace and harmony.”

Lucien's Infinity Island Event - Part 3
Tumblr media
Why
A page of reading notes tucked into an old book.
Where will these cryptic words lead? As of yet, the boy does not know. He just feels that the world is slowly getting bigger, so big that he can’t see the end.
Book Title: The Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy
Page: 243-
Author: Newton
Reading Time: Until bedtime
Lines that stood out:
No more causes of natural things should be admitted than are both true and sufficient to explain their phenomena.
Therefore, the causes assigned to natural effects of the same kind must be, so far as possible, the same.
Those qualities of bodies that cannot be intended and remitted and that belong to all bodies on which experiments can be made, should be taken as qualities of all bodies universally.
In experimental philosophy, propositions gathered from phenomena by induction should be considered either exactly or very nearly true not withstanding any contrary hypotheses, until yet other phenomena make such propositions either more exact or liable to exception.
Thoughts after reading:
I still don’t understand fluid motion. How did we come up with this kind of hypothesis? Why is drag directly proportional to velocity? Why is it that in a controlled environment, the drag force of a sphere is directly proportional to its radius? What about beyond natural things? Is there things we still haven’t discovered? What if we cannot find these behaviours within natural things? Does every object really have these universal properties? Why does everything in this world follow certain rules? What will happen if those rules are changed?
I hope I can find out the answer to these soon.

First Line Patterns!
I was tagged by @rose-madder-gaze and @clockwayswrites ! Thank you both 💛
uhhh as for patterns, I have no idea.....
Less dialogue opens than I anticipated and I wonder if I looked further back they would happen more or if that is just something I rely on for the shorter things I don't upload to AO3.
I guess in general I try and start with an action even if its just something inconsequential.
Lines are under the thing and I really did just include the first line even if it was only one word.

A project 3000 years in the making: every episode of Futurama ranked in increasing order of sci-fi, from earthiest to spaciest
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tier 10: Insulting - These episodes are hardly even sci-fi. They just address realistic situations in a hardly even futuristic setting.
Tumblr media
138. Stench and Stenchibility - The earthiest episode. It doesn't even feel like a Futurama. It feels like a "King of the Hill" that wasn't selling, so the script people crossed out the name "Dale" and replaced it with "Zoidberg".
137. Three Hundred Big Boys
Tumblr media
136. The Luck of the Fryish - I hate the flashback episodes. They defeat the purpose of the show.
135. How Hermes Requisitioned His Groove Back
134. A Leela of Her Own
133. Zapp Gets Cancelled
132. I, Roommate
Tumblr media
Tier 9: Antiquated - These episodes are better at employing 4th-millennium technology, but their plots are still unmistakably 3rd-millennium.
131. That's Lobstertainment!
Tumblr media
130. Naturama - It doesn't even use technology. The only reason it isn't completely below the scale whatsoever is that it's implied the narrator is from Omicron Persei 8.
129. Future Stock
128. The 30% Iron Chef
127. The Silence of the Clamps
126. Attack of the Killer App
125. Bender Should Not Be Allowed on Television
Tumblr media
Tier 8: Earthy - While incredibly down-to-earth, these episodes do have one pretty important bit that makes them qualify as sci-fi, like a robot Santa or a head transplant.
124. Jurassic Bark
Tumblr media
123. Yo Leela Leela - It is nearly my favorite episode, no doubt there - but let's face it. Change a few things, and it could easily happen in this era.
122. Raging Bender
121. Rage Against the Vaccine
120. Xmas Story
Tumblr media
119. The Route of All Evil - It's the 31st century, but there are still newspapers????
118. The Impossible Stream
117. Put Your Head on My Shoulders
116. Fry and the Slurm Factory
Tumblr media
Tier 7: Humble - These stories are a little futuristic, but they still feel plain for their day.
115. Bender Gets Made
114. Cold Warriors
Tumblr media
113. Saturday Morning Fun Pit - Mostly grounded in the 1980s, but spared from a lower tier because it does have clones and lasers and the like.
112. The Cyber House Rules
111. Bendless Love
Tumblr media
110. Near-Death Wish - The expensive panoramic bits were pretty epic, however.
109. The Lesser of Two Evils
108. 31st Century Fox
Tumblr media
Tier 6: Allegorical - These episodes use future crap as a metaphorical stand-in for present crap.
107. Bend Her
106. Into the Wild Green Yonder
105. A Big Piece of Garbage
104. Proposition Infinity
103. The Cryonic Woman
102. Mars University
101. Bendin' in the Wind
100. Love's Labours Lost in Space
99. A Head in the Polls
98. Children of a Lesser Bog
97. The Futurama Holiday Spectacular
96. A Flight to Remember
95. Fun on a Bun
94. Lethal Inspection
Tumblr media
Tier 5: Type-Zero - Pretty standard sci-fi plots, unremarkable in their remarkability.
93. Anthology of Interest I
92. A Pharaoh to Remember
91. The Problem with Popplers
90. T.: The Terrestrial
89. Viva Mars Vegas
88. The Inhuman Torch
87. Amazon Women in the Mood
86. The Deep South
85. The Mutants Are Revolting
84. A Fishful of Dollars
83. Where No Fan Has Gone Before
82. Leela's Homeworld
Tumblr media
Tier 4: Techie - Here's where it gets fun. These are the first plots to get out of this world. (As a bonus, we've hit the median point!)
81. The Tip of the Zoidberg
80. Fry and Leela's Big Fling
79. That Darn Katz!
78. Murder on the Planet Express
77. When Aliens Attack
76. The Devil's Hands Are Idle Playthings
75. Space Pilot 3000
74. A Clone of My Own
73. The Birdbot of Ice-Catraz
72. Where the Buggalo Roam
71. The Beast with a Billion Backs
70. How The West Was 1010001
69. Brannigan, Begin Again
68. The Farnsworth Parabox
67. A Taste of Freedom
66. Why Must I Be a Crustacean in Love?
65. Less than Hero
64. Spanish Fry
63. The Sting
62. The Bots and the Bees
Tumblr media
61. Meanwhile
60. Related to Items You've Viewed - It feels like it should be a tier-6, but just isn't. There is no mathematical explanation for this.
59. The Butterjunk Effect
Tumblr media
Tier 3: Otherworldly: The epitome of Futurama. These have the ideal blend of science and fiction.
Tumblr media
58. Fry Am Fry Is the Egg Man - Grammar, Stanley.
57. Parasites Regained
56. The Prince and the Product
55. Kif Gets Knocked Up a Notch
54. Mother's Day
53. The Series Has Landed
52. Decision 3012
51. Hell Is Other Robots
50. A Tale of Two Santas
49. Anthology of Interest II
48. Bender's Game
47. Insane in the Mainframe
46. In-A-Gadda-Da-Leela
45. War Is the H-Word
Tumblr media
44. I Know What You Did Next Xmas - A ponderance: does this episode nullify "The Late Philip J. Fry", now that they can go back in time the easy way?
43. Crimes of the Hot
Tumblr media
Tier 2: Spacey - Mind-bending and heart-warping, these shows are good enough to make you (very, very temporarily) stop wishing Matt Groening would die.
42. A Farewell to Arms
41. Parasites Lost
40. Game of Tones
39. Overclockwise

35. Free Will Hunting
34. My Three Suns

33. Leela and the Genestalk - Fun side note: At first, it didn't used to occur to me that this episode was pronounced "JEEN-stalk". I'd been pronouncing it "JEN-ə-stalk", like the way it's pronounced in words like genetic, genesis, or generate.
32. The Why of Fry
31. Roswell that Ends Well
30. Calculon 2.0
29. Assie Come Home
28. Lrrreconcilable Ndndifferences

23. The Day the Earth Stood Stupid
22. The Duh-Vinci Code
21. Obsoletely Fabulous
20. Fear of a Bot Planet

Tier 1: Unreal - Creativity personified; these stories are chariots to the stars, moving so fast that they make the other nine tiers appear to stand still.
19. Ghost in the Machines
18. Neutopia
17. 2-D Blacktop
16. Law and Oracle
15. Love and Rocket
14. Rebirth

7. Teenage Mutant Leela's Hurdles
6. Reincarnation
5. The Late Philip J. Fry
Tumblr media
4. All the Way Down - Infinitely better than I expected from a Hulu episode.
Tumblr media
3. The Prisoner of Benda - Nothing says sci-fi like inventing a whole new math equation just to give your story a proper ending.
2. Time Keeps on Slippin'
Tumblr media
1. Benderama - The spaciest episode. Now this is what it is all about: half-sized clones and microscopic microbrewing and sensitive giants.
Other notes:
The spaciest season is season 6 (weighing in at a high tier-2), and the earthiest is season 2 (a low tier-5).
This is intended as a ranking of the episodes in order of earthiness to spaciness, not as a ranking of my opinion on the episodes. A ranking of my opinion is over here.
Drafting this list took all night, and preparing it took all morning.

Frederick the Great's first letter to Voltaire, 8 August 1736 (translation bc I need to study for my French exams and the textbook is boring)
Monsieur, although I do not have the satisfaction of knowing you personally, you are nontheless known to me through your works. These are treasures of the mind, if one can express oneself thus, and pieces worked with such taste, delicacy, and art that the beauties seem new each time one rereads them. I believe I have recognised in them the character of their ingenious author, who brings honor to our century and to the human spirit. The great men of our time will one day be oblidged to you, and to you only, in the case of the dispute being reborn of whether to them or to the ancients preference is due, for you will tip the scales to their side.
You add to the quality of an excellent poet an infinity of other knowledge, which in truth has some affinity with poetry, but is only appropriated to it by your pen. Never has a poet put rhythm to metaphysical thoughts; the honor has been reserved for you first. It is this taste which you show in your philosophical writings that engages me to send you the translation I have done of the accusation and justification of Mr. Wolff, the most celebrated philosopher of our day, who, for having brought light to be most tenebrous aspects of metaphysics, and for having treated these difficult subjects in a manner so clean and precise, is cruelly accused of irreligion and of atheism. Such is the destiny of great men: their superior genius always exposes them to the venemous traits of slander and envy.
I am at present translating the Traité de Dieu, de l'âme, et du monde, springing from the pen of the same author. I will send it to you, monsieur, as soon as it is completed, and I am sure that the force of the evidence will strike you in all of the propositions, which follow one another geometrically and connect like links in a chain.
The gentleness and support which you show to all those who dedicate themselves to the arts and to the sciences makes me hope that you will not exclude me from the number of those whom you find worthy of your instruction. This I call your business of letters, which cannot be but profitable to all thinking beings. I even dare to advance, without denigrating the merit of others, that in the entire universe there is not an exception to be made of these which you could not master. Without lavishing on you an incense unworthy of being offered to you, I can say to you that I find beauties without number in your works. Your Henriade charms me, and happily triumphs over the misguided criticisms that have been made of it. The tragedy of Caesar shows us sustained characters; the sentiments there are all magnificent and great, and we feel that Brutus is either Roman or English. Alzire adds to the graces of novelty this happy contrast between the customs of savages and of Europeans. You show, through the character of Gusman, that a misunderstood Christianity, guided by false zeal, becomes more barbaric and more cruel than Paganism itself.
Corneille, the great Corneille, he who attracts the admiration of all his century, if he were to be resurrected today, would see with astonishment, and perhaps with envy, that the tragic goddess lavishes you profusely with the favors which she was stingy with towards him. What is not to be expected by the author of so many masterpieces! What new marvels will not spring from the pen who once lais out so spiritually and elegantly le Temple du Goût!
This is what makes me so ardently desire to have all of your works. I beg you, monsieur, to send them to me, and to communicate them to me without reservation. If, among the manuscripts there is one that, by necessary circumspection, you find appropriate to hide from the public eye, I promise you to keep it in the bosom of secrecy, and to content myself with applauding it privately. I know unfortunately that the faith of princes is an object little respectable in our time, but I hope nevertheless that you will not let yourself be preoccupied by general prejudices, and that you will make an exception to the rule in my favor.
I would believe myself richer in possessing your works than I would be in possessing all the fleeting and despicable goods of fortune, which are acquired and lost by the same chance. We can become clean first [?]; we understand your works through the help of memory, and they last us as long as our memory. Knowing the limited extent of mine, I oscillate a long time before deciding on the choice of which things I judge worthy of placing here.
If poetry were still on the stand it once was, know that the poets knew only how to hum tedious idylls, eclogues made from the same mold, insipid stanzas, or at the most they knew how to set their lyre to the tone of an elegy; I would never renounce such, but you improve this art; you show us new ways and routes unknown to Lefranc and to Rousseau.
Your poems have qualities which render them respectable and worthy of the admiration and study of honest men. They are a lesson in morals by which we learn to think and to act. Virtue is painted in them in the most beautiful colors. The idea of true glory is there determined, and you insinuate a taste for science in a manner so fine and so delicate such that anyone who has read your works breathes the ambition to follow in your footsteps. How many times have I said to myself: What a shame! leave there a burden of which the weight surpasses your strength; one cannot imitate Voltaire unless he is Voltaire himself.
It is in these moments I have felt that the advantages of birth, and their smoke of grandeur with which vanity cradles us, serve for very little, or, to put it better, for nothing. These are distinctions foreign to ourselves, and which do not do anything but decorate the figure. How preferable are the talents of the mind! What do we not owe to those who nature has distinguished by what she has made them! She takes pleasure in training subjects which she endows with all the necessary capacities for making progress in the arts and in the sciences, and it is the duty of princes to reward their vigils. May glory not use me to crown your successes! I fear nothing else except that this country, being little fertile for laurels, would not provide as many as your works deserve.
If my destiny does not favor me to the point of being able to possess you, at least I can hope to see one day he who for so long I have admired from afar, and to assure you in person that I am, with all the respect and consideration due to those who, following as a guide the torch of truth, consecrate their works to the public, monsieur, your affectionate friend.
-Fédéric, P. R. de Prusse

Incomplete list of better ways to do “Proposition Infinity”:
Amy dates Roberto after meeting him at the jail
Bender dates a random human he met through Amy and Amy is deeply and profoundly embarrassed by her friend’s bad taste
Near the end Bender goes on a Bender-typical crying jag and it causes Amy to realize that she didn’t actually like Bender for his edgy exterior but for his sweet, sensitive heart, which reminded her of Kif, which causes her to go back to Kif (and Bender himself to back out rapidly because if she liked him for his sensitivity she obviously completely misunderstood him because he obviously has none)
Bender suggests to Amy that since he is the baddest bad boy of all time she should pretend to date him just to mess with Kif and a heartbroken and angry Amy goes along with it but then they accidentally become the faces of a movement and they have to get married or it will ruin the reputation of a cause to say nothing of the blow to Bender’s newfound social cachet as a successful activist
Kif actually shows up and creates a whole bunch of conflict trying to win Amy back instead of conveniently disappearing and then conveniently reappearing. Bonus points if the anti-Prop Infinity faction tries to rope him in as their representative because he’s a devoted family man whose tadpoles are now doomed to grow up in a broken swamp due to the seductions of metal fever and he’s extremely conflicted about this because unfortunately, although he only did it to wring an apology out of her, he walked out on Amy
At the end Amy’s parents tell her that they were never actually against her going out with a robot but they were just against her going out with Bender and Amy is like “unfortunately you have a point.”

Slow Burn Masterlist 2
part one
Bird Man, Metal Arm, & the Girl (ao3) - mynameisrae bucky/sharon, past sharon/steve, peggy/steve M, 105k
Summary: After returning from the blip, Sharon Carter is finding her place in the world again. She never expected to find Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes on her doorstep with a proposition for her. A proposition that leads her to moving in with the boys and becoming a part of the new Cap Trio. Now she's stuck with the bickering pair while they fight to keep Captain America's shield and navigate their new dynamic. A new dynamic that is becoming more and more complicated as Sharon becomes increasingly more curious what it would be like to kiss that damn scowl off Bucky Barnes' mouth.
Black and Blue (ao3) - concupiscence66 sam/bucky M, 86k
Summary: Sam and Bucky are a couple of guys. A couple of guys who have been battered and bruised down to their souls, and who are in need of some serious rest and relaxation. Bucky would be happy to crawl back into his isolation, but Sam coaxes him into another visit to Delcroix. With no impending doom hanging over their heads, Sam and Bucky have a chance to really get to know one another and see if the spark between them might turn into something more.
Constellations (ao3) - Vetiver bucky/darcy E, 56k
Summary; Bucky and Sam are called to assist SWORD with a strange object from space that's landed in Louisiana, where they meet Dr. Darcy Lewis. After the situation takes an even weirder turn for Darcy and Bucky, they reconnect in New York to figure out the mysterious cube - and their mutual attraction.
This will hang out in 'teen' rating territory for a while before eventually earning its 'explicit' rating. I usually wait till a work is complete before posting, but this one is still in progress; I will aim to update a minimum of twice a week. More tags to be added as events unfold.
Dissonance (ao3) - stuckybarnes peter/wade M, 121k
Summary: Wherein Deadpool is reluctantly hired to protect Peter Parker from an organization out to hunt him, with varying success on both ends and quite a lot of feelings, revelations, and identity crises.
Endgame (ao3) - YunaYamiMouto tony/stephen T, 196k
Summary: The rouge Avengers are pardoned under the influence of King T'Challa and it is up to Tony to 'welcome' them back. But as he and his new team are at the private airport, an unexpected fight breaks loose and the fate of the whole universe is changed when a wizard places himself as Tony Stark's protector.
God's Righteous Man (ao3) - FoxyAtlas steve/bucky M, 232k
Summary: A story in which the serum doesn't affect Steve's size, the shield goes to Bucky, and they reunite years before the Battle of New York. Also, Steve is a punk, but that's canon.
A timeline starting with the Howling Commandos and going all the way to Pre-Infinity War.
Help Me Hold Onto You (ao3) - dash_of_darkness bucky/sam E, 202k
Summary: Six months after the fall of SHIELD and HYDRA, Sam is no closer to finding Bucky and he is growing more desperate by the day. Bucky feels like he's stuck in a free-fall, not able to trust anyone including himself. When he shows up to Sam's house unannounced one night, Sam scrambles to catch him and bring him home before it's too late.
If They Knew All About You (ao3) - MsHermia pepper/tony T, 521k
Summary: Tony Stark had lost his son when he was only 2 years old, stolen away in broad daylight with nobody the wiser of what exactly happened. Years later, Tony has just made it through the disaster with Ultron. He is trying to keep himself and the team together but relationships are strained and tempers are running high. Then a random turn of events leads to his path crossing with that of a particular vigilante. They are strangers to each other, or so they think.
Peter Parker is on top of the world. After a few shitty years, losing his parents and then losing his Uncle, things are finally looking up. Sure he lives in a crappy little apartment with his Aunt but he might have just found his mission in life.
------
This is an AU story obvious by some of the tags. I'm starting out a few weeks after Age of Ultron took place. Civil War will be a thing.
it's always who is spider-man, never how is spider-man (ao3) - i_regret_thatpersonalityquiz harley/peter T, 176k
Summary: "Stay?"
Peter finally looked down to see Harley Fucking Keener, Iron Lad, the boy who had caused his shoulder to be throbbing all night, looking away with a slight tint to his cheeks. Peter opened and closed his mouth, no sound coming out.
And he sat back down.
OR: Peter had been living on the streets, dealing with your average homeless vigilante stuff. Things got a bit more complicated when the Avengers started to chase him down.
Re-Engineered (ao3) - Opy3332 bucky/tony M, 73k
Summary: “Tony blinks. He blinks and his entire world changes.”
Tony is sent back in time from mid-Infinity War to just after returning from Afghanistan.
How different is Tony Stark, and the MCU, with all that knowledge of the future?
Haunted by the guilt of Rhodey’s injury, the betrayal and pain of Steve, the fear of Wanda, the loss of Jarvis, and the foreknowledge of Thanos, this Tony is one the universe hasn’t contended with before. And he is more than ready to re-claim his title of genius, billionaire, and philanthropist in ways unexpected.
Rock Me Gently (ao3) - enigma731, invisibledaemon gamora/peter M, 479k
Summary: “She is our–She is Gamora,” Nebula says. “There is only one Gamora and I know her better than any of you do.” She pauses and glares at Peter, clearly challenging him to protest that. For once, he doesn’t dare. “This Gamora has jumped forward in time nine years, but she is the same person at her core. Just as you are the same despite not having experienced the last five years I did. We are all just–out of sync at the moment.”
Sharpen Your Teeth (ao3) - STARSdidathing loki/tony M, 369k
Summary: A betrayed Tony Stark leaves the Avengers. He's angry and bitter but he's not about to stop being a hero. The problem is that not everyone is happy with his decision.
Sugar Sweet (ao3) - ColorCoated steve/bucky E, 173k
Summary: College Student Bucky finds himself immediately attracted to Steve. He knows that Steve's a bit older than him, and that Steve himself is put off by the age difference. . . But that doesn't stop Bucky from wanting to climb him like a tree. AKA a Sugar Daddy AU that no one was asking for.
What I Used To Be (ao3) - thepinupchemist bucky/steve, background tony/bruce/pepper E, 117k
Summary: When the police uncover a hidden sub-basement in the home of criminal Alexander Pierce and find a tortured omega and his three pups, they bring them to the Stark Omega Clinic, a non-profit dedicated to rehabilitating traumatized omegas.
After dark in September 2005, fourteen year old Bucky Barnes vanished. Eleven years and three pups later, he is far from the boy that went missing from a suburban neighborhood outside of Denver.
Steve Rogers is an alpha of some means. When he came into money, he decided to use what he had for good and sign up as a candidate to be a support alpha for his close friend Tony's charitable clinic. When he takes on the task of helping reintegrate Bucky and his pups into the world, he doesn't expect to fall so hard.
Your Latest Trick (ao3) - ChortlesOfDoom loki/tony, pepper/tony E, 273k
Summary: Following a violent, masterfully feigned death aboard the Statesman, Thor believes Loki's gone for good; more importantly, so does Thanos. Exhausted and hungry for revenge, Loki returns to Earth, but as he bides his strength, anonymously supplying the Avengers with inside knowledge between his own preparations, he begins to see the true cost of holding on.
