Summary: Dum-E knows exactly what Ton-E needs.

JARVIS had explained it, when Dum-E asked why Pep-R had given back the glowing machine from Ton-E’s chest, safely mounted in a glass box. It is, after a fashion, Sir’s heart. Dum-E had liked that answer, and he liked even more that Pep-R had taken such good care of Ton-E’s heart. Dum-E loved Ton-E and Pep-R. They were meant to be together-humans.

So when Ton-E came stumbling into the workshop looking sick, Dum-E knew exactly what to do. It was obvious what his creator needed.

Dad needed his heart. The one that Pepper saved. And Dum-E was happy to help.

I think people don’t realize that Tony Stark was always the guy to make the sacrifice play. By always, I mean post-Afghanistan, but I think the version of Tony who emerged from “everyone lives together and gets into quirky mundane situations with the OC” fanfic really warped some people’s opinions of him.

In Iron Man, he destroys his power reserves to get Stane into the sky (away from civilians) and freeze his suit. He could easily have died there. He tells Pepper to turn on the reactor to take out Stane, and we are explicitly informed that this should kill him. This is immediately post-character development.

Of course he comes very close to death in later battles, some more explicitly sacrificial than others. Flying the nuke into the portal, positioning himself directly under a floating city that’s about to explode, taking on Thanos alone, off the top of my head. My point here is that Endgame was nothing new.

Tony makes that joke to Peter where he's basically asking the kid to not scare him so much, the one where he says, "You know I have a heart condition." Fic where this statement really freaks Peter out. He gets fixated on worrying that something will go wrong with Tony's heart. Maybe he even starts to go over there more, always looking for ways to surreptitiously listen to Tony's heartbeat and check that it's still strong.

Eventually, the situation reaches a breaking point. Maybe Peter has a nightmare or a panic attack, maybe Tony doesn't answer a text and Peter's separation anxiety goes through the roof, maybe Tony really does get a little hurt on a mission and Peter is disproportionately terrified. One way or another, the truth comes to light, and LOTS of comfort ensues.

The invitation for another Iron Man Memorial statue arrives in his inbox at 6 AM. Steve has been to more ceremonies honoring his friend in five years since his return than he cares to count, but he attends them all. And at each one, Steve takes a moment to think about the man.

Not the genius billionaire playboy philanthropist.

Not Iron Man.

Just Tony.

Steve thinks about the last night of Tony’s life, how it was the only time Steve told Tony, “I love you,” and how much Steve regrets that he never said it sooner or will ever again.

and in the end isn’t it just a massive fucking stab in the gut that the first arc reactor was considered “proof tony stark has a heart”, and that they used THAT in the funeral

as if his humanity was only granted to him once he was nearly stripped of it. as if people only noticed his human elements once he was willing to start sacrificing himself for them.

A heartless child raised in the public eye. A heartless teen, far too young to be in high school, far too young to be this aware of his own importance. A heartless young adult, mourning his parents. A heartless adult, struggling with the sudden responsibility of a billion dollar corporation. A heartless adult, struggling with addiction.

But the reactor is proof he has a heart, because he starts putting himself on the line. The heart can only be seen beating once it’s bleeding. and nobody saw the blood until he let them.

No one who was present will ever forget the horrific scream that came from you when Pepper told you the tragic news: your father, Tony Stark, was dead.

You hadn’t been able to say goodbye to him. He had already taken his last breath when you arrived on the scene. All you were able to do was crumble by his side and cry all the tears in your body until someone forcefully took you away.

A few sleepless nights later, you stood by Pepper and Morgan on the wooden deck, watching the wreath floating adrift on the water. Proof that Tony Stark has a heart, it reads.

Beside you, Morgan didn't seem to understand what was going on, why everyone was dressed in black and watching an arrangement of flowers float away. Mostly, she didn’t understand why her dad was not there. It was sad to see.

Happy was right behind you, followed by Rhodey and Steve, then May and Peter. Peter. He was holding his tears, pained from losing his mentor.

When the wreath was no longer in sight, people slowly dissipated, heading back inside the Stark residence. You stayed, unable to move your feet, your eyes were glued on the water before you. Why did you leave me? Why did you sacrifice yourself?

You didn’t hear the footsteps behind you as Peter approached. You and him hadn’t spoken since the last battle.

He cleared his throat. ‘’Hi. I know you’re probably tired of hearing this, but I’m sorry for your loss, Y/N.’’ You didn’t turn around, but Peter knew you were listening. ‘’Your dad was an admirable person. I’m not talking about his sacrifice. He was— He’s been an excellent mentor to me. And, in a way, a great father figure in my life.’’ Peter breathed in. He was about to tell you something he hadn’t told anyone. Not even his best friend Ned, who he always tells everything to. ‘’I was with him when he died. He told me—'' Peter stopped himself, feeling choked by the emotions in his throat.

When you arrived on the scene, you didn’t acknowledge Peter or anyone else around. Your eyes were focused on your father laying on the ground, unalive.

''Want to know what he told me?’’ Peter continued, not waiting for your answer. ‘’He…he said to go to you and feel the feelings he once forbid us to have.''

After a lot of deep thinking, Tony had come to the realization that forbidding your relationship had been wrong of him. He didn’t like it, but Peter was a good guy. He was kind, caring, honorable and very protective of the ones he loved. If there was anyone Tony could trust to take good care of his daughter, it was Peter.

Slowly, your eyes traveled to Peter. They welled with tears again, but this time Peter was there to wrap his arms around you, pull you against him and provide you comfort. You buried your face in his chest, staining — and ruining — his shirt with your mascara-tears, but it was the last of his worries.

Your slim fingers grabbed his white button up, clutching at it as you cried.

Your father’s words meant so much to you — you and Peter. You remembered the look of rage on his face when he caught you kissing in the lobby. It had just been a simple kiss goodbye, but Tony reacted like he had caught you doing something compromising in bed. He had yelled at Peter and banned him from the tower for weeks with a threat of kicking him out of the Avengers if he were to kiss you again.

Like any angsty teenager, you told him you hated him and blasted Taylor Swift’s Love Story in your bedroom.

You never thought he would change his mind about Peter, but Tony Stark was a surprising man.

Peter kissed the top of your head, holding you tight.
