(things that secretly make me want to actually become a successful writer: the idea that an author’s oc will always be a fundamentally different character than any popular interpretation of them)

Book of the Week No.29 Paper Towns by John Green Rate: 10/10 Favorite Line: "Every moment of your life is lived for the future." Review: Written by John Green and first published on 2008 by Dutton Pub, 'Paper Towns' is a YA (somewhat mystery) novel that follows Q's romantic feelings for his childhood neighbor Margo, a mysterious girl who embraces life without inhibitions. So I believe, John Green is once again successful on creating a meaningful literary piece. I love the central concept of this novel and this is how I get it— someone's display of character depends on the other ones who perceive it. We expect a lot to a person that we end up deceiving ourselves by assuming what we thought they are. These expectations are deemed doubled especially when we like a person or for our loved ones. John Green represented these on this book. For me, this is true and we all need admission to this fact. I also loved how Green created Margo for a character. Mystifying, personal, cheerful and outward. She initiated this idea of paper towns that runs the whole premise of the novel. So when Margo disappears, Quentin follows a trail of clues to discover the true meaning of 'paper towns' and 'paper people.' And that's it, Q's special adventure for his lifetime. Also, Whitman poems!!! Ugh. I even bought the Canterbury Classics edition of it for honor of this book. It just comes into my mind like how does John Green exert so much time and effort to read and research other literature to use as a device for his own story. Overall, it was a straight re-read. John Green never fails to offer a bookful enjoyment. Happy New Year! (& New Year's resolutions)
Bye bye, 2023! Welcome, 2024!
Last year I was in a rut. A burnout occupied me most of the year, and I don't think I released any subtitles at all! I simply could not find the energy to work on anything. I did release a couple of novel translations (on a side blog), but wasn't quite as consistent as I had hoped.
So, for next year... let's try to change that! Let's at least finish the subtitles for Tenden (Tousute)! I'm more than halfway there already! How's that for a New Year's resolution?
If I put my mind to it, I'm pretty sure I should be able to do it! Can't stay in this rut forever! It's going to be a slow and steady process though. So, don't get your hopes up just yet. I don't want to spiral right back into burnout again!
Speaking of New Year's resolutions, last year I said I wanted to read 100 books this year, of which 20 would be in Japanese...
Well, let's just say I didn't make it. (Unless I include manga volumes in the count.) The total count of novels read stopped at 60. That is less than in 2022 (80 books) and 2021 (69 books)!! And here I was thinking I could do it! (Let's try again in 2024?)
Looking at the list, I lost interest in reading somewhere in the middle of the year. Probably because I was trying to read Japanese novels, but my mind was too tired to commit to it. In the end, I finished only 7 Japanese books. (...it's something.)
It seems the first 6 months of 2023 were completely devoted to rereading Ascendance of a Bookworm. (The last book of the series was released in December. The ending is very satisfying.) In April I ran out of English-translated volumes and started on the Japanese volumes, but... I lost the motivation to read consistently.
It was only in August that I picked up the pace again, soon after I bought a bunch of new books at a second-hand store.
The most notable entry of 2023:
"Pride & Prejudice". I finally read the book after all these years! I must have bought it over 10 years ago, but somehow never opened it! I was quite all right. The story is good, but the writing was a bit long-winded, I guess>
"The Longest Memory". I was forced to read it in high school but did not enjoy it back then. Upon rereading the book, I can only say I was too young to appreciate it back then. I think it is actually a pretty good read. Although somewhat depressing.
"Hitler's Daughter". A book that my husband was forced to read in high school. I remember picking it up before, because the title sounded intriguing, but then only reading a chapter or two. Well, I finished it this time, and, it's good.
"The Apothecary Diaries". The latest addition to the list of Japanese light novels I've fallen in love with. It's kind of sucks I'm caught up with the English translations already... either gotta wait for more translated chapters or find out if Japanese ones are floating around.
Other books on 2023's read list are worth mentioning: "The Invisible Library" (Genevieve Cogman), "There is No Dog" (Meg Rosoff), "Papertowns" (John Green), "A Tale of Time City" (Diana Wynne Jones), "Murder at the Bookstore" (Sue Minex), "A Three Dog Problem" (S.J.Bennet) & "The Thursday Murder Club" (Richard Osman).

Paper towns
Paper towns Is truly a John Green novel. It has Love, mystery, hormones and Most importantly Teenage angst. Now I am a Teenager and love me some Angst, but to go along with this review I also Have a Small story about this book. When I was nine I picked up Paper Towns in My library because I thought that the Name Margo sounded pretty interesting, because fun fact I am More likely to read books where Main characters hav Names that I’ve never heard of. So I pick up this book and read the description I think ‘yes this Is what I want to Spend my summer Wednesday doing, so I check it Out and start reading and I absolutely Loved it. So I bring it to some of the errands that my Mom has to run and after a day of me Having the book she looked it up On Common Sense Media and read something on there and decided that I was not old enough to read it, ( not her not knowing that I Had Wattpad on my phone) so I didn’t finish it and forgot about the Book completely except For the random thought of what Was sooooo bad about that book That I couldn't even finish the first part. That is until a month ago when I was wondering what to Read on vacation and I thought well huh I could probably finish that book now that I’ve read and seen much worse online. So many years, and three John Green books later I finally got to finish the Novel that Is Paper Towns. Soooo any who back To the review the book is Amazing and I stand by what I said earlier it truly is a John Green novel. If you don’t know John Green is a teacher and makes educational videos on YouTube and writes books For teenagers who feel...... not Like other Teens. The novel Follows Quinten Jacobsen (Q), an eighteen year old student in his last month of high school. In this time Q’s childhood Bestfriend  Margo Roth Spigelman climbs into his window after years of not Having Any contact with him and says that she needs a ride. After an eleven part plan and the wildest night of Q’s life he goes to bed for an hour then wakes up only to discover that Margo has gone missing. He follows clues that he thinks that she left for him and it's up to him to find her, Wherever she may be. Now that my Synopsis is over, I can get into My opinion on this book. With witty best friends, horrible romance decisions and a Mind bending puzzle, going back and forth between Theory's and indecision, this book is trulyCaptivating and draws the reader in with realistic Adaptations of teenage thoughts and actions. I mean really there is no difference between me and Margo except for the fact that she is breaking into Sea-World and I and reading about a girl Breaking into Sea-World with the world’s biggest Simp (she types sarcasm lacing her words). In reading this book I absolutely had toTry to decipher what was so bad in that Common Sense Media comment box that Made her so turned off to me reading to and I have still come a standstill. I currently have a theory and that is that there is a mention Of someone having a Micro-Penis (not telling who) or the brief innuendo fo someone giving a blow job. All this aside I think that This is a fine book and could probably be given to an internet exposed eleven year old. John Green has created a beautiful Collection of brain rot and enamored his Audience of 15 year old girls trying to be different and failing horrendously, But getting a great read out Of it. 9/10 would read again.
