"The Olympic Theater" of Vicenza (Italy). Work of Andrea Palladio, one of the most important architects of his time (1508-1580). He developed a style, called "Paladian Architecture", model of buildings throughout the world.
We recently pulled this first edition of Andrea Palladio's Four Books on Architecture for a class on the Italian Renaissance. What better choice for that class than a book by one of the most influential architects of the western world? The book compiles four of Palladio's treatises on architecture, classical design, building materials, and city planning, and it is illustrated with woodcuts made after Palladio's own drawings.
Palladio, Andrea. I Qvattro Libri Dell’architettvra : Ne’ Quali, Dopo Un Breue Trattato de’ Cinque Ordini, & Di Quelli Auertimenti, Che Sono Piu Necessarii Nel Fabricare. D. de’ Franceschi, 1570.
Spread from the extremely rare I Quattro Libri dell Architettura by Andrea Palladio, 1570. Palladio worked in the Venice region of Italy where his buildings are famous for their classical style. His style became known as Palladianism, and it was copied across Europe until the 18th century.
Continuing with Italian Style, when in 2022 a company called Totem makes a handmade EV with a carbon fiber body based on the Alfa Romeo GTA of 1965, where do they take a photo? In front of a Renaissance villa of course. This is the Totem Alfa Romeo GT Electrice in front of Palladio’s Villa Barbaro. The car will set you back north of $500,000. In the 1968 movie Amanti race car driver Marcello Mastroianni parked his Alfa Romeo 2600 in front of the Villa Barbaro where he met American heiress Faye Dunaway. There they are in the grotto in back. The film offers lived in views of the interior, painted spectacularly by Veronese.
