Heyyy Can you write something cute with Maddie Buckley? Thanks - Anon 💜
Holding your car keys in your hands, you lightly tossed them up and down, listening to the sound of the small jingle that they made.
“Hi! I’m sorry!”
You smiled, pushing yourself up from where you were leant on the car.
“No problem, I’m in no rush anyways, here.”
Unlocking it, you opened the door for Maddie and held her bag for her as she got in and handed it back.
Closing the door, you walked over to the drivers side and sat down, picking up a coffee cup, waving it in front of her.
“Don’t worry, Buck told me your order, and what you would want.”
“I would’ve trusted your judgment.” She laughed.
Grinning a little, you closed your door and stretched a tiny bit.
“I’m sorry you had ti wake up so early, I know you’re working nights and would rather be sleeping.”
“Hey, it’s no bother, seriously. If I didn’t wanna do it I wouldn’t have.”
She smiled at you, sipping her coffee as you pulled away from the call centre, heading out into the busy street.
Your fingers tapped the wheel to the beat of the song playing.
“How about I make you something to eat to make up for it?”
“Nah it’s alright. Can I crash at yours though? My heating isn’t working right now.”
“Of course! Yeah!”
You smiled at her, diverting your course to drive to her apartment instead.
You followed her in, and fell on to her couch, covering your head with a cushion.
“I have a bed you can sleep in.”
You mumbled something, and waved your hand dismissively.
Laughing softly, Maddie began putting her things away.
“I’ll get us something to eat.”
While she was doing that, she left you there.
She wasn’t expecting you to have fallen asleep, but when she came back through not even half an hour later you were fast asleep.
Laughing to herself she walked over.
Maddie took the cushion from your head, carefully lifting it to place the cushion under it, and she went upstairs, bringing a blanket down for you.
Taking your phone, she set it on charge and set an alarm on hers for you to wake up too.
Even though you were asleep it was still calming for her to know that you were there.
So as she sat in front of you, eating her dinner, she just smiled as she saw your hand reach down to take some of the food from her plate.
“Hey.” She said softly.
She looked up at you, and you gave a weak smile, sitting up.
Getting up, she sat next to you, letting you share her dinner.
“How long do I have…?” You mumbled.
“You’ve still got a few hours.”
You nodded and stretched again, resting your head on her shoulder, half asleep while eating.
She held her laughter in, not wanting to disturb you.
You were her brothers best friend, yet you always found time for her, even if it meant waking up early, or cancelling plans with Buck.
You had shown her more effort than anybody else had, and she felt safe with you.
And to her, she couldn’t ask for anything better.
Even if you were now fast asleep on her shoulder, clutching some fries in your hand in a vice grip

"So, lunch on Tuesday?"
A grin broke out on (Y/n)'s face and she turned to the right, looking over at her big sister with a smile.
"Yep. You know we'll have to invite Buck though, right?" (Y/n) laughed at the way Maddie rolled her eyes.
They had gone out today on a girl's day while Evan, Eddie and Chimney were all on shift. That was all well and good, but it made Evan feel left out. Whenever they went out together on a girl's day, they ended up going to the movies or going out for lunch another day with Evan. The three of them were a close-knit sibling unit and Evan seemed to think girl's day should also include him.
"Hm, I know." She cast a sly grin across at (Y/n) before she looked ahead and turned the next corner.
"You can just drop me at the station, you know. Eddie will be finished by now and he said he'd give me a lift home." They were only three minutes away from the station and it saved Maddie having to go past her flat to get to (Y/n) and Eddie's place.
It meant she could just drop (Y/n) here and make the short trip home and (Y/n) would go home with Eddie. As long as he wasn't currently out on a call but even if he was, (Y/n) would just wait at the station for him.
"Don't forget to ask Eddie and Buck about getting that night off next month."
(Y/n) groaned and pressed her temple against the window at the mere mention of what was going to happen next month. She could feel a headache forming behind her eyes at the thought.
"If they don't get it off, I'll be down at the station with them." (Y/n) could hear her sister laughing, but she wasn't joking. She was being serious. If neither of the boys got that night off, (Y/n) would be joining them and hanging out at the station for the night.
There was no way (Y/n) and Maddie could get through dinner with their parents without Eddie and Evan there with them. It wasn't often that they saw their parents nowadays and that was how the three siblings liked it.
But (Y/n) knew when she told them she was pregnant, they would want to come down and see them all. She had been surprised they hadn't come down sooner, but they were finally coming down for three days next week and (Y/n) was dreading it.
"At least they're happy this time… they're excited." Leaning across the console, Maddie rested her hand on (Y/n)'s leg and gave her a little shake to make her smile.
"Yeah, after they said I wasn't old or mature enough to be Chris's mum. Now this is 'their grandchild' they've changed their tune."
(Y/n) kept her head against the cold glass that felt soothing to her skin. She dared to glance her eyes down and her expression softened when she looked at her bump. Her fingers danced over her abdomen and she started drawing aimless patterns like Eddie had started to do recently. (Y/n) didn't realise how attached to her stomach Eddie would be until she finally started to show.
Not long before she and Eddie got married last year, her parents had tried telling her- in front of Eddie- that she wasn't mature enough to be a mother to Chris. And she had seen the conflict in their eyes when Chris called her mum. They didn't see how much it meant to (Y/n) that Chris thought of her as his mother.
Because she was the youngest sibling, they thought she was somehow incompetent at doing anything.
Only now it was different because (Y/n) was the first one out of the three of them to have a child. Her parents had changed their minds because they could see (Y/n) was the happiest she had ever been with Eddie and she was settling down. They were going to be grandparents and it sparked a small change in them.
Although (Y/n) knew if they dared say anything when they came down, Eddie would blow a fuse.
"So… have you thought of any names yet? I think-"
"We are not calling her Maddie." (Y/n) shook her head and shot a glare across at her sister who was just about to turn into the station car park.
"Why not?"
"Because it's your name. It's bad enough Buck's trying to hustle in and pitch Evelyn for a name. We're not naming her after anybody."
(Y/n) had seen Eddie's eyes light up when they went to their scan two weeks ago and found out they were having a girl. She knew he had been hoping for a girl and she could already tell their daughter would have Eddie wrapped around her little finger.
But the couple were starting to regret telling people because they were all coming up with names and ideas left, right and centre. Evan had been bummed they couldn't name the baby after him, until he realised Evelyn was close to his name and kept pestering Eddie to pick that name. And even though Maddie was joking, she had pitched Madeline to them a few times.
God knows there wasn't anyone on (Y/n)'s side of the family she would want to name her daughter after- except for her big sister. But (Y/n) couldn't handle two Maddie's and getting confused and having to come up with nicknames for each of them.
And she had asked Eddie if he had anyone on his side that he thought about naming their daughter after, but he wasn't keen on the idea. They wanted something original. A name no one else in their friendship circle had.
"Fine," Maddie huffed with a roll of her eyes as she parked up and whipped off her seatbelt. She turned to the left and looked over at (Y/n) with a tender smile before she danced her fingertips across (Y/n)'s stomach. And her smile brightened when (Y/n) moved her hand down so she could feel the baby wriggling. "Well what about Dolly, because she'll be as cute as a little doll."
"I'll think about it." (Y/n) would admit that it would be sweet to call her Doll or Dolly, especially if she was small and delicate. But knowing their luck, they would agree on that name and then either their daughter wouldn't suit the name when she was born or she wouldn't be a small baby.
She gave Maddie's hand a squeeze and grinned, but just as she took off her belt and looked to the left, a pair of hands slammed against the window.
(Y/n) screamed as Maddie gasped and reeled back in her seat with a frown when they both realised it was only Eddie.
He had a wolfish grin on his lips while he crouched down to look through the window. He seemed to make it his mission to give (Y/n) a fright recently and she was sure it was because he loved to make her scream and liven up the baby.
"Eddie!" (Y/n) hissed and slammed her hand down on the window before she moved her hand to her chest, trying to regain back her breath.
Her brows furrowed into a deep frown as Eddie opened the door and when he held his hand out for her, she batted it away and climbed out. "Don't do that! Do you want me to have a heart attack?"
She gave his shoulder a shove and tried to glare at him, but it was hard when he grinned down at her with such a wide smile that his cheeks and eyes creased. And when he leaned over and wormed his arms around her waist and reeled her into his chest, (Y/n) didn't have the effort to push him away.
"No, just keepin' you on your toes, baby."
His palms pressed flush against her back and he pulled her into him until their chests were touching and (Y/n) had to hold onto his shoulders to steady herself. She pursed her lips and narrowed her eyes on him when his lips attached to the side of her neck "Look what you've done," She muttered quietly, reaching behind her to hold Eddie's wrist and move his hand from her back until his palm was pressed into the side of her stomach.
"She's happy to see me." He grinned against her neck and bared his teeth, lightly grazing against her neck until (Y/n) gave his shoulders a squeeze and started to squirm in his arms.
He lifted his head up so he could kiss the side of (Y/n)'s temple and his arms curved back around her. Keeping her pinned into his chest and when she curled her arms around his neck to hug him, he started to sway them both from side to side. And Eddie turned his head to the left, grinning over at Maddie as she got out the car and leaned against the door with a grin and raised brows.
"Did you two have fun?"
"We went for lunch, then we saw a movie."
They hadn't made any plans today, they had decided to have a girls day but see what they felt like doing when they went out. Both of them had been hungry, so they tried a new restaurant for lunch and then decided to go to the movies. It had been a while since they had gone out together and seen a movie and it was something they used to do every weekend when (Y/n) was younger.
"Someone had to leave the screen twice for a drink refill. Little miss lemonade with lime cordial."
(Y/n) rolled her lips together and looked up at Eddie through her lashes when he scrunched his nose in distaste and gave her an odd look.
"You don't like lime juice." That wasn't something Eddie had ever known (Y/n) to drink and it was an odd combination. And it wasn't like (Y/n) to go and get a refill drink either, she barely drank enough during the day to keep her going so it was a nice surprise to hear she kept getting another drink.
"Hm, your daughter does," Maddie chirped with a wide grin before she looked down at her watch. "Right, I'd better love you and leave you, I'll see you both at the weekend for games night. Tell Buck I said hi."
When Maddie climbed back in the car and blew a few kisses their way, they stood back and waved her off.
"Is your shift over?" (Y/n) dragged her eyes up and down Eddie's frame, only just realising that he was still in his starched navy trousers and button up shirt. Her fingers dug down into his shoulders and she tilted back a little when Eddie leaned his chest against hers and stole a deep kiss from her lips.
"Hm, just gotta get changed, then we can go home." He could see that was music to (Y/n)'s ears.
Sitting down in a movie theatre was all well and good, but (Y/n) was starting to feel tired already and she hadn't done that much today. She wanted to go home, make tea and slump on the sofa with her boys.
"So, was the movie any good?" Eddie curved his left arm around (Y/n)'s waist to keep her tucked up into his side as they walked round to the front of the station. He stuffed his other hand into his pocket and pressed his lips to the top of (Y/n)'s head when she leaned her cheek against his shoulder.
"Yeah, but I missed the ending queuing for the toilet." In all honesty (Y/n) had missed a few crutial parts of the film when she went to go get another drink, twice. And then she had to hurry out twice for the toilet and the queue had been horrendous at the end. It was lucky she was only five months along with the baby or she wasn't sure she would of been able to wait as long as she did for the queue to go down.
She could feel Eddie laughing into her hair as both their steps came to a halt when they noticed Hen, Chimney and Evan all gathered in a little circle just outside the station doors.
"What kind of meeting is this?" (Y/n) quipped with a grin and she leaned over when Evan looped his arm around her shoulders and reeled her under his wing for a hug.
"Shift change-over. Me and your hubby are leaving, these two are staying for the next four hours." Hen hitched her bag higher on her shoulder and smiled triumphantly as if she had just won a game.
They were all out here because the trucks were being restocked and the ambulance was out on a call. It was quieter out here than inside where everyone was hustling and bustling to stock up and clatter and change over. And Hen was getting ready to leave whereas Chimney and Evan were taking a breather before they went back in for the rest of their shifts.
"So, how's Evelyn?"
(Y/n) rolled her eyes and unhooked her brother's arm from her shoulders before she crossed her arms over her chest. But she smiled when Eddie reached behind her to give Evan a light shove.
"I've told you, we're not naming her after you." He gave Evan a pointed look before he moved his hands to his hips and leaned his head to one side. It didn't matter how many times Evan tried or how much he pestered. Eddie's first daughter was not going to be named after his brother-in-law.
(Y/n) leaned into Eddie's left side, trying to hide her grin when Chimney started to laugh.
"Debatable." Evan remarked with narrowed eyes before he looked back down at his little sister. He wasn't giving up just yet; he could pester them for a lot longer to see if they would give in and go along with the name he had chosen. "So, how is she?"
"She's fine."
"So, are you two-"
Whatever Hen was about to say tapered off when a sharp, shrill noise cut through the air and shifted the atmosphere around them.
A gunshot.
Nobody knew where it came from. They didn't know who fired, where they were standing, what kind of shot it was that was directed at them. Or who the shot was aimed for.
Terror dug its claws into (Y/n)'s chest and ripped out her lungs when her head turned to the right.
It was Eddie. Eddie was the one who got shot. She didn't see the bullet hit him, but (Y/n) knew the moment he had been hurt; his left hand clawed into her back and made her wince. She knew by the way his fingertips punctured into her hip and how his hand fisted her flesh like he was trying to tear a chunk off that the pain hit him instantly.
She didn't see the shot, it happened far too quick to see the bullet fly through the air or see it hit her husband. But when Eddie's shirt around his right shoulder started to turn berry-red, it ignited (Y/n)'s heart until she was matching the pulse rate of a hummingbird.
Her hands grappled for Eddie, holding his back and scrunching her other hand up in his shirt over his chest to try and keep him upright, but she couldn't.
His name passed her lips like a whisper in the wind and when Eddie's lips parted, (Y/n) could hear the quiet breath he huffed.
There was no expression on his face, his eyes weren't in focus, they were dazed and staring ahead into the distance. His lips parted but he wasn't saying anything and he was barely breathing. It was like someone had refreshed his system and he was completely blank.
But he couldn't stay upright. It felt like hours had passed when barely a second ticked by from the bullet entering his shoulder to Eddie's body tilting backwards.
"Eddie-" (Y/n) curled her hands into fists around his shirt but she couldn't hold him up. He fell too swiftly and with too much weight for (Y/n) to try and keep him on his feet. Her body shuddered and she winced when his fingers stayed puncturing into her back where she knew she would have bruises later.
He crashed down on his back on the pavement, his head bouncing against the concrete slabs harsh enough that it should have cracked his head open.
(Y/n) snapped her eyes closed on instinct when she started to fall with him but a scream burned at the back of her throat when it felt like the back of her right thigh had suddenly been torn apart or bitten by a rabid dog.
Her knees crashed into the floor and her hands shook against Eddie's chest as she landed with a crash so forceful it sent all the blood down to her legs and her head started to spin. Black and white spots danced in front of her eyes and she let her head bash down into Eddie's chest, gasping to try and keep herself awake and alert, but everything was on fire.
(Y/n) could feel every pounding beat her heart thrashed out. She could feel her heartbeat beneath every inch of her skin and her pulse throbbing in her ears. She felt like her head was going to explode. Bells were ringing in her ears along with her heartbeat. Hot coals surrounded her body that felt like it was melting and scorching hot.
Her knees were aching- her right thigh felt like it had been shredded to ribbons.
"Eddie… Eddie, baby," Words dripped past (Y/n)'s lips but she barely heard her own voice.
She tried to focus herself and move but everything began to shake. Her hands were trembling up and down like she was doing some odd kind of dance but she managed to cradle Eddie's face between her trembling palms. Her thumbs swiped across his face and she tried to tilt his head in her direction.
His eyes were still open but they weren't focusing properly, he was looking through (Y/n) rather than at her. But he was awake. (Y/n) needed him to stay awake.
It was only then that (Y/n) managed to get her ears into focus and she realised she could hear voices around them. She remembered it wasn't just her and Eddie in this situation. Her brother and their team were here too.
"Cap we've got a shooter!"
"Get inside-"
"Eddie's been hit!"
"Get inside- get them inside now."
Hands grappled with (Y/n)'s shoulders and a quiet "No," tumbled past her lips when she felt a chest pressing down into her back and whoever it was nudged her to the side.
She wasn't sure who was holding her back but she began to cry. She had to stay with Eddie. Why weren't they letting her hold Eddie? She had to make sure he was okay and somehow get him inside. (Y/n) had to stay with him; they couldn't try and tear them apart like this.
His name tore past (Y/n)'s lips again and her hands tried to latch around her brother's bicep when Evan crouched in between her and Eddie.
He was working on overdrive. Evan could barely move from the amount of adrenaline that was shooting through his system and it made him feel sick. His thighs burned from how he was crouched, balancing on the heel of his boots while his trembling arms grabbed his brother in law. He looped Eddie's arm around the back of his neck and dug his fingers into Eddie's good shoulder like tallons.
His left hand grabbed Eddie's hip and with some effort, Evan hoisted his brother up onto his shoulder.
"Go!" He all but roared, waving his arm out for Hen and Chimney to get inside with (Y/n). He needed his sister inside with them. She had been hurt too and Evan wasn't sure where she had been hit. He could see the blood soaking down both her legs and pooling on the floor and he dreaded to think where it was coming from.
His legs shook as he bolted through the open doors, trying to stay hunkered down low so he and Eddie were less of a target for anymore bullets. But he heard another gunshot ricochet against the shutters and it made Evan cower.
Why was someone shooting at them? What had they done? They were emergency responders, they saved lives, they didn't take them. There was no reason for someone to be taking revenge out on them.
Why had they shot Evan's family?
"Eddie-" (Y/n) felt a pair of hands on each of her arms and she let them lift her up but as soon as she was on her feet, she screamed.
A banshee howl left her lips and she coiled her right leg up off the floor. Standing on both feet felt like a knife was slicing down from her hip to her toes. Someone was cutting her in two. Someone had taken her husband away from her. She needed to get him back.
Her foot bent at an awkward angle beneath her and she tried to hop on her left foot, dragging her right leg behind her like it was a third, useless limb she didn't need. Her head flopped forward, gluing her eyes to the floor that was littered with tiny flecks of blood like someone had walked by eating strawberries.
Her hands dug into Chimney's arm and shoulder and if she had the energy, (Y/n) would have tried to tell him she could walk. She would of tried to hold herself up if she wasn't drowning in panic.
She barely felt Hen run past her to open the truck doors.
Hen climbed in the back of the truck. Bobby climbed in the driver's seat. Evan and Chimney dragged their family towards the truck. It was their only mode of transport to get out of here and make their way down to the hospital when the ambulance was already out on a call and was far too small to transport them all.
(Y/n) could hear Bobby shouting orders, but his voice sounded quiet and distant like he was shouting from the other side of a lake.
"Lockdown the station when we leave! Nobody in, nobody out!"
A groan rumbled through Eddie's chest and vibrated against the back of his throat when he felt himself suddenly being tilted backwards.
He could barely comprehend why he was suddenly being lifted up by Evan or where he was being taken. The view of the station was blurred. Everything looked like a watercolour painting but the paints were too runny and blending together. Eddie couldn't make sense of anything.
His lungs stuttered and clenched when he was hoisted off of Evan's shoulder and he was held up on his feet by someone behind him and Evan in front of him, gripping his wrists so tightly he was going to snap them.
Evan climbed up the steps, leaning backwards to keep Eddie's weight and keep him stood up. And when he was up, Evan carefully twisted Eddie to the left and laid him down over the seats. He could see the movement sent Eddie's whole body convulsing and he gasped for breath at the feeling of his shoulder coming into contact with the chairs.
"Okay come here; I gotcha." Spinning on his heels, Evan reached his hands down and held onto (Y/n)'s forearms while Chimney stood behind her. She was much easier to manouevre than Eddie, she was alert and responsive and somewhat helpful.
Her nails scratched into Evan's forearms and a choked sound rumbled past her lips when he pulled her up. When her foot caught on the top step, waves of electricity flowed through (Y/n)'s leg and spots danced in front of her eyes as her head fell forward into her brother's shoulder.
"Cap, go, go!" Hen bashed her fist on the roof before the truck came to life and they all jostled forward as Bobby shifted into gear.
(Y/n) thrashed her arms out until her hands planted down on the seats and she let her weight fall down until she was on her knees in the footwell. She stretched her right leg out behind her, trying to ignore the throbbing pain that felt like her whole leg was vibrating with her heartbeat.
It was as if her leg was hanging on by a thread that was about to snap. (Y/n) wished it would. If that thread tore, it might take away the pain. She just wanted it to stop so she could focus on Eddie. He was her priority.
Her chin pressed down on Eddie's good shoulder and her trembling hands clutched his shirt so tightly she popped the first three buttons open.
Her head was pounding. Her eyes couldn't see anything more than Eddie, blurs and stars twinkled all around him like he was an angel or a vision from Heaven. She leaned closer to him when Evan hovered beside her. Evan held onto the headrest to hold himself up while he leaned over Eddie's chest and pressed a large pack of gauze down on the bullet wound.
He winced when Eddie coughed and groaned and his eyes almost popped out of their sockets. Eddie's head lifted up when pressure pushed down on his shoulder and felt like a hand was physically breaking through the muscle to touch the most sensitive nerves around his bone.
The pressure set something off inside Eddie's body; an extra dose of adrenaline coursed through him and made him a little more alert.
"Are you hurt?" Eddie's voice was gruff as he grunted and managed to flop his head to the left to look over at (Y/n).
He blinked slowly and tried to prize his eyes open wide so he could look her up and down but his vision was going blurry. He was glad his good arm was closest to (Y/n). He flopped his arm off the chair and slumped his hand onto her arm so he could trail his tremoring fingertips over her body.
She had blood smears on her shirt, but he couldn't find an entry wound. She had blood on her face but he couldn't see any cuts. Her breaths were shallow and her body was trembling but Eddie didn't know where she had been hurt.
His fingertips moved down until his hand touched her abdomen and he kept his unfocused eyes on (Y/n) to watch any change in her expression. He moved his hand from left to right, becoming more frantic with each second when she didn't say anything and no one told him if she was hurt or not.
"S-she okay?" Eddie tipped his head back into the seat and coughed when Evan applied more pressure. He was going to bust his shoulder if he pressed down any more than this.
But he tried to look back at (Y/n) when he realised she was only clutching his shirt with one hand. He felt her other hand hold his wrist and press his hand down on her stomach to make him stop checking frantically.
"She's okay."
(Y/n) did her best to smile, despite the tears that were pouring down her face and each breath she took which hitched higher and higher than the last.
Her eyes stayed focused on Eddie, but when she felt Hen applying pressure to the wound on the back of her right leg, (Y/n) couldn't help but cry out. A scream cut past her lips and her eyes snapped closed as she smothered her face down against Eddie's shoulder to try and stay awake when it felt like she was going to pass out.
"Where's she hurt?" Evan took the words right out of Eddie's mouth while he leaned over to try and look his sister up and down. He had seen her fall and heard her cry out, but he didn't see a bullet hit her. Evan had to assume she was hit from the pain she was in and the way she was starting to deteriorate the same as Eddie.
"Right thigh, just above her knee. Someone give me their belt, I need to stop the bleeding."
Chimney leaned back on his heels and yanked his belt free from his trouser loops and handed it over. He moved his hands to (Y/n)'s shoulders and tried to comfort her and keep her still as he moved to press his fingers against her neck to check her pulse.
Another scream mixed with a tepid cry coursed through the air when the belt sank into (Y/n)'s leg like teeth chomping down on her flesh. She could feel her leg and her foot pulsing and throbbing and vibrating like she was a boombox screaming out a beat.
But when (Y/n) lifted her head from Eddie's shoulder, she could see his eyes rolling near the back of his head and his breaths started to pick up and become fast and shallow.
"Just hang in there, two minutes, okay? Stay with us, Eddie." Evan gave Eddie's neck a jostle and tilted his head from side to side to try and keep him conscious. He couldn't fall asleep on them, he had to stay awake and conscious until they got him to the hospital. Why couldn't he stay awake like (Y/n)? He needed to stay alert with them.
"You're gonna be okay, baby." (Y/n) couldn't keep her voice level and she hiccupped through her words as she tried to push closer into the chairs to be next to Eddie.
She swiped her eyes and nose against her sleeve but she could feel her head filling up with air like a balloon. She wanted to go to sleep. She wanted everything to stop. She wanted Eddie to wake up properly and be okay. (Y/n) wanted to rewind time and usher them all inside so nobody got hurt.
Why did it have to be Eddie?
Her hand moved to cup the side of his face and she swiped her thumb across his jaw while her other hand dragged through his hair, brushing the curls away from his eyes. She knew he loved it when she carded her fingers through his hair. Maybe this would keep him awake with her.
"We're here! Eddie, come on let's go. Don't you fall asleep on me."
Eddie's head tilted back and he choked, barely able to breathe when he found himself laid back over Evan's shoulder once again. His left hand tried to reach out, but Evan was moving too fast for Eddie to comprehend. He could taste (Y/n)'s name on his lips and feel the way his nerves tingled when he tried to say her name, but it didn't make a difference. He couldn't see her anymore.
Bobby pressed his hand to the back of Eddie's neck and helped Evan carefully lower him down onto the stretcher that was already waiting for them to arrive. Two nurses and a doctor smothered Eddie with an oxygen mask and a pulse monitor on his finger before they began to move him.
A frown pulled on Evan's lips when Eddie gripped his wrist weakly and gave a sharp tug. "What? What?"
Evan tried to move with him but they moved Eddie too fast and his grip wasn't strong enough to pull Evan along with them. But he heard that one word that spluttered past Eddie's lips.
"(Y/n)."
Leaning down, Hen curled her arms around (Y/n) and pulled her back when she tried to crawl forwards after Eddie. Shallow, gasping breaths left (Y/n)'s lips and her hands scratched against the metal floor as she tried to drag herself to the door.
"Eddie-"
"He's with a doctor, which is where we need to take you. He'll be okay, you're both gonna be okay." Chimney reached down for (Y/n)'s left arm and looped it around the back of his neck before he carefully stood up and the pair of them lifted (Y/n) up between them.
Each gasping, startling cry she let out made them wince and they could feel her shaking back and forth between them like she was hypothermic.
Chimney slowly climbed down the steps but he paused when Evan appeared in front of them like an omen. He held his arms out and reached up for (Y/n), taking her weight for her to help her down from the truck.
"We need another stretcher over here! Pregnant lady with a gunshot wound!"
Both (Y/n)'s hands moved to grip Evan's biceps and she tried tilting her head back to look up at him but it only made spots flash in front of her eyes. She could feel her knees buckling and giving in and she was sure she would be laid out on the floor at any given moment.
"Eddie… I w- wh- where's Eddie?"
"It's okay, you'll see him soon. Let's g-"
That was all she needed to hear. Those words acted as a switch in (Y/n)'s brain and everything started to shut down.
Panic sparked through Evan's body like a wildfire when (Y/n)'s head slumped onto his arm and her body went down. He deadlocked his arms around her waist and lifted her up, pinning her chest against his to stop her from hitting the floor while they waited for another stretcher to be rushed over to them.
Evan leaned down and looped his right arm beneath (Y/n)'s legs, cringing and gagging when he felt the blood instantly soak onto his skin and drip down between his fingers.
Oh God.
***
I'm not staying here.
With that thought in mind, (Y/n) tiredly looked around the room she was in and pursed her lips.
She didn't want to be here.
She didn't want to stay here on her own.
The only reason (Y/n) had managed to stay here last night was because she had been dosed up on morphine which knocked her off her senses. She had become coherent enough this morning to realise she was in the hospital.
She was in a small room on her own. Eddie wasn't here. He was somewhere on this floor, in this ward, but he wasn't here. (Y/n) couldn't sleep on her own. She couldn't stand being anywhere on her own and right now, she was alone at night. Evan and Maddie had visited her and stayed with her until the nurses told them they had to leave and come back in the morning.
None of the nurses listened when Maddie told them (Y/n) was liable to try and leave. They thought she was too hyped up on morphine to try and leave, but that was what she was going to do.
Everyone who had been to visit her today had told her Eddie was okay. He had recovered from surgery, his shoulder joint hadn't been hit by the sniper, it was just the muscle that got damaged. Eddie was awake and on the same pain meds as she was and (Y/n) knew Chris was safe at home. And Evan was staying at their house so Chris didn't have to leave the comfort of home so he would feel better without his parents there.
Her hands moved to her face and she brushed away the tears she had been shedding for the last half an hour. All (Y/n) had done since her siblings left was cry. She hated being alone. She couldn't sleep alone at night. The only reason she slept at home when Eddie was on a night shift was knowing that Chris was in the next room.
"I want Eddie."
If she didn't see him, she was going to go insane.
All (Y/n) could see when she closed her eyes was the image of Eddie on the floor with a mixture of their combined blood mingling together against the concrete. How would she know if he was truly okay if she didn't see him with her own eyes?
How did she know her friends and family weren't just lying to her to keep her calm?
Sitting herself up, (Y/n) looked down at the IV line capped into her left hand as she took deep breaths to stop herself from crying. With minimal effort, she paused the IV machine and twisted the cap until it disconnected from the needle in her wrist. She could easily reattach it whenever she decided to come back to this room later.
It took some effort for her to swing her legs over the side of the bed and (Y/n) grimaced at the hospital gown she was wearing.
Maddie promised to bring her and Eddie some of their own clothes tomorrow when she came down to visit them.
The moment her feet touched the floor, (Y/n) grimaced. The morphine didn't take all the pain away. Granted, it had done yesterday, but recovering from the anaesthetic probably helped numb everything else.
When she was up on her feet, (Y/n) stretched both arms out and hobbled over to the wall. She planted her hands down on the wall, lifted her right leg until her toes barely scraped the floor, and started to hop. It was a lot of effort and her stomach churned and twisted, but she had to persevere.
She had to find Eddie.
More tears stained her face as she quietly opened the door and hobbled out. It felt like she was a cripple with only one leg. Her right leg was practically useless in this state anyway and the nurses hadn't found her a walker or any crutches yet. They were supposed to be trying to get (Y/n) up and out of bed tomorrow, but she needed to move around now so she could find her husband.
(Y/n) crossed to the other side of the corridor so she was leaning on the wall on her right. Her shoulder and arm pinned into the wall as if she was about to slouch down to the floor and she hopped and shuffled along, trying not to make a sound so no one noticed. She could always say she was going to the bathroom if anyone asked.
Her eyes squinted in the dim light to read the names written in whiteboard marker outside each room.
She scanned along them and passed about five different rooms until her heart jumped into her throat and her eyes locked on a familiar name.
Diaz.
Here he was. She'd found him.
Her teeth sank down in her lower lip as she dragged her limp, useless leg behind her and crossed to the room opposite. She was relieved Eddie wasn't on a ward. It wouldn't do her any favours to be sneaking into the men's ward in the middle of the night when she didn't know who else would be in there.
She opened the door as quietly as she could and peeked her head round. (Y/n) wasn't sure what she thought she was going to see. Maybe she thought Eddie would somehow get visitors to stay through the night with him whereas she wouldn't. Or maybe she thought he wouldn't actually be in here, that this was a mistake and something had happened to him like she dreaded.
But when she hobbled over the threshold and looked ahead, her stomach started to flutter with adrenaline and she scratched her hand across her neck to remind herself to breathe.
There he was. He didn't look comfy. It wasn't like Eddie to sleep on his back, it wasn't something he did. When they were at home (Y/n) was used to him laying in funny positions with one leg hanging off the bed or she would wake in the morning to have him wrapped around her like a second blanket.
But here Eddie was, laid uncomfortably on his back with his right arm pinned to his chest in a sling. He had pushed the cover down so it barely covered his knees and he had his good arm flopped above his head on the pillow.
(Y/n) knew he was a light sleeper so she turned and shut the door with a little pressure to wake him rather than stand beside him and frighten him awake.
His head snapped forward within a second and he groaned, clicking his neck from left to right while his eyes adjusted to the dim light seeping in from the corridor.
"Baby?" Eddie's voice was gruff and deep. He lifted his arm from the pillow and dragged his hand across his eyes to make sure he wasn't dreaming. Before he moved to look at his left arm. He wasn't connected to an IV; they took him off it just before he went to sleep and said they would start him on another one in the morning.
He wasn't dosed on morphine anymore, conjuring up the image of his wife in front of him to make himself feel better. So why was she here? She should be back in her own room. Resting. Safe and sound until one of the nurses finally listened to Eddie's beligerent badgering about taking him down to see his wife.
"Baby… what are you doing?"
He pushed himself up so he was sitting up in bed, rubbing at his stiff neck before he squinted at her through his lashes. He watched her drag her fingers across her neck and over her chest; something he recognised as a nervous habit.
When she tried to step forward, she noted the way Eddie took a sharp breath. She could barely walk. She was limping and she had to reach out and grab the bed frame to hold herself up.
"I got lonely," (Y/n)'s voice was meek and timid but she tried to smile. She didn't want to be in that room on her own any longer. Why couldn't she be in the same room as Eddie? They were both patients with similar injuries. And they were both more liable to stay and listen to the doctor's orders if they were together and comfortable instead of separated and panicked.
She watched Eddie's eyes rake up and down her frame, but it was the way his lips pulled into a deep frown and his eyes narrowed on her that made (Y/n) shrink in on herself and wince.
"Jesus baby, you shouldn't be walking about! You could hurt yourself, you know that?"
"I can't sleep on my own." She tried to keep her tone light and force herself to smile, but Eddie's stern expression and his demanding voice made her stomach twist.
"You could tear your stitches or burst a blood vessel if you're not careful. Baby you can't-"
"I'm scared."
A tremor rattled through Eddie's chest and caused a sharp pain to strike his heart when he realised (Y/n)'s eyes were watering. He could feel his lungs shrivelling up in his chest and his shoulders sagged, despite the pain it caused.
She didn't want to be on her own. Not when being apart from Eddie meant she had nightmares that he didn't get here in time. She had to see him, touch him, be with him to convince herself that he was okay. Being on her own left her mind free to torment her. To see Eddie drop down in a pool of blood. To feel her leg ache and pound like it was going to fall off. To have her hands cradling her stomach, fretting that she was going to lose their baby.
It was too scary to be alone. (Y/n) wanted company; she wanted Eddie.
(Y/n) was torn between wanting to run forward and wanting to leave if Eddie was going to be mad with her. But her watering eyes widened when Eddie threw the cover to one side and waved his good hand towards her.
"Get in here."
As soon as she was within reach, Eddie curled his good arm around (Y/n)'s waist and helped her ease down onto the bed. He laid down and pulled her with him, suddenly feeling his own sense of peace when they laid down together. This was why he couldn't settle early in the morning when the drugs wore off. This was why Eddie felt uncomfortable all day and got irritable when any visitor walked through the door. They weren't (Y/n). He wasn't whole without her.
He turned his head to the left and smothered his nose and lips against the top of her head, breathing in her scent like it was the most addictive drug in the hospital.
He felt her head snuggle down into his chest and she bound her arm around his torso, clinging to him like someone was suddenly going to walk in and tear her out of his arms. He wouldn't let them. He wouldn't let anyone take her away from him; especially not if she was frightened.
"Do you feel okay? All I got off Buck was 'she's fine, she's fine' and that didn't really wash well with me."
They had run Eddie through what had happened and told him where (Y/n) had been shot because he remembered she was hurt, but he didn't remember where. It was a relief to know the bullet went in her leg. Any higher and it could have hit a vital organ. Any higher and it would have hit the baby.
But no one would tell Eddie much because at first he wasn't lucid enough and then he tried to leave the room when he wasn't allowed. He was promised he could see her tomorrow, but holding her tonight was so much better.
"Just achy… my thigh stings a bit, but it's okay. How about you?" (Y/n) tilted her head up and nuzzled her face into Eddie's neck so she could be closer to him.
Her lips attached to his neck and she pressed a tender kiss there just beneath the stubble that was starting to grow in.
"It's familiar, being used to it helps. And it didn't hit the bone, thank God." It was strange to think that he was used to the feeling of being shot. Eddie didn't think it was a feeling he would ever have to have again after he left the army.
But having some experience with this feeling definitely helped. He knew how to avoid the pain and how to push through it, and he thanked God that his shoulder joint had been missed. He couldn't be dealing with more operations or physio and time off work to try and patch it back together. And he had to recover so he could hold his baby girl without a struggle when she arrived.
With that thought in mind, Eddie carefully slid his hand over from (Y/n)'s hip until his fingers grazed along her stomach. His touch was light and delicate at first, but when (Y/n) didn't wince or groan or pull away, he pressed his palm down over her gown so he could cup her stomach.
"How's she doing?"
"Her heartbeat settled down this afternoon after the shock wore off… I haven't lost any fluid, and she keeps kicking me. They think she's gonna be fine."
Maddie had made her smile when she said (Y/n) was now special. Rather than bi-weekly checks, for the past two days (Y/n) had been getting almost hourly checks on the baby. When her heartbeat evened out this afternoon, they made a note of it.
Since the placenta and baby were still in place and her vitals were fine and (Y/n) hadn't lost any fluid, they were confident the baby was going to be just fine. But (Y/n) could still have checks throughout the day until she left, and she would be on close monitoring when she was discharged.
"Good, you had me worried."
"Me? What about you, you scared me Eddie. I thought- I thought…" (Y/n) knew exactly what she thought, but she didn't have the willpower to voice it.
She didn't want to say it outloud. It was hard enough to admit to herself that she thought Eddie wasn't going to make it to the hospital. The thought of having to go through life without Eddie wasn't something (Y/n) could contemplate.
She couldn't bring up Chris on her own. She couldn't go through labour and have this baby without him. (Y/n) couldn't do any of that without Eddie by her side.
Her lips rolled together tightly to stop herself from crying and she smothered her face in the side of his neck when his arm tightened around her waist. She could feel his fingers feathering up and down her stomach and he tilted his head to the side so he could kiss the top of her head.
"It's gonna take more than a bullet to take me away from you."

Collision
TW/CW: Car accident, injuries.
Pairing: Evan Buckley x Diaz!Reader
You smiled to yourself as you walked beside Christopher, your nephew. You had watched him in the morning while your brother was working, and Carla was attending an appointment. You didn’t mind though, you absolutely adored him, and he enjoyed spending time with you.
You had an hour to kill before dropping him off to Carla, and heading off to work yourself, so you decided to swing by the station to have lunch with the team. It was quiet when you arrived, indicating the team were on a call. You took it upon yourself to make lunch for everybody, knowing it would be a relief to them when they got back. Chris was sat at the table on his tablet, in a world of his own, allowing you to focus on the food. You couldn’t help but smile to yourself as the sound of the shutters opening filled the station followed by heavy boots thudding against the floor as each firefighter jumped out of the truck. The footsteps got closer, the faint smell of smoke mixed with a familiar aftershave filled your nostrils and you instinctively lean back into the body that is now behind you as arms snake around your waist. “Isn’t this a nice surprise?”
You turn towards the voice, and smile, “Apparently, I can’t seem to stay away.” You lean up to kiss Buck, causing Chris to pull a disgusted face. This seemed to amuse Buck, and he kissed you again. Eddie appeared in the kitchen, and made his way over to his son, visibly happy to see him. “Come on guys, get a room.” You rolled your eyes playfully at your brothers comment, and pulled away from Buck.
You dished up the food for the team and took a seat, eager to hear about the call they had just been on. You listened intently as you ate, your complete focus on Buck as he spoke passionately about the call. Your heart warmed as you watched his face light up, he loved how much you genuinely enjoyed hearing about the calls, and how his day had gone. Chimney was the next to speak up, “It was a good call, except the part where Buck was playing hero and nearly got himself killed.” Bucks eyes widened and he turned to look at Chimney, giving him a look that immediately stopped him talking. Chimney, trying to help, began speaking again, “Don’t worry, it’s nothing out of the ordinary. It wasn’t any more dangerous than a simple call, the risk is always there. Besides, it was probably one of the safer times Buck tried to save the day, you should’ve seen him on the call last week.”
“Chim, stop talking.” Buck, who was now visibly on the spot, turned to face you. He studied your face, working out how to approach this. He opened his mouth to reassure you, but you beat him to it, “I thought we spoke about this…” Buck knew you understood that no day was guaranteed, and that saving people on calls was something he would always try to do, even if it put him at risk. He also knew that he had a habit of jumping the gun and putting himself in dangerous situations without thinking it through. “I’m sorry…”
You checked your watch, and stood up. “I just wish you’d be more careful, Buck.” Chris stood up and hugged Eddie goodbye, and you did the same. “Later bro.” You said goodbye to the team and walked back to the car with Chris by your side. The breeze hit you, and you took a deep breath. Maybe you were overreacting, maybe not but you just needed a moment. You helped Chris into the car and got in yourself, turning on the radio. The short ride to Carlas mostly consisted of Chris laughing as you sang along to the music, and the occasional conversation when Chris wasn’t overly engrossed in his phone. Carla was there to greet you when you pulled up on her drive, Chris was extremely excited and practically jumped out of the car to hug her. Carla gave you a hug, “Y/N, it’s so good to see you!” You smiled and hugged back, “It’s been a while, huh? Life has been hectic.” Carla laughs at this, “You’re telling me, your brother told me all about you and Buck. Moving in together? That’s a big step!”
“We were practically living together anyway, and if I’m being honest, Eddie is probably just relieved to have his couch back. I was starting to get on his nerves.” You explained to Carla, and she chuckled. “Well, I wish you all the best. I’m gonna get Chris inside, and I’ll let you run off to work. It was lovely seeing you.” You hug Chris goodbye and bid farewell to Carla before getting into your car and beginning your journey to your place of work. In front of you, the amber light turned to red and you stopped. You could see that traffic was beginning to build up on the other side of the junction, and you didn’t want to be late. You sighed, and made the decision to take an alternate route, so when the light turned green, you indicated and pulled out to begin taking your turning. You let out a sudden gasp before you could even properly register the car coming towards you. All you could do was attempt to brace for the impact, and so you did.
A loud crunching sound surrounded you, followed by the feeling of being thrown as your car was barrelled into. You closed your eyes tightly, scared of what was next. You didn’t have the courage to open them again until the car steadied. The first thing you could see was the airbag in front of you, despite not feeling it deploy moments before. You could smell the burning of the tyres, outside of the car, you could hear the panicked voices of bystanders, but all you could focus on was the blood that was now spread across your arms, unsure of where it was actually coming from. You weren’t in pain, at least you couldn’t feel any in that moment. Is that what shock feels like? You couldn’t think, but your eyes got heavy and you fought your hardest not to succumb to the darkness.
Back at the station, the call was only just coming in. The alarm blared throughout the station, alerting the team to the call. They were quick to jump into action, grabbing their gear and piling themselves into their assigned trucks. Eddie and Buck sat beside each other, speaking casually between themselves about what had happened earlier. “Just give her some time, she’ll come around. For her, two of the people she loves most are at risk everyday, you’ve gotta imagine it can’t be easy. It’s a risky job as it is, and when you put yourself into riskier situations without needing to, it decreases the chance of making it home at the end. She’s scared. Just talk to her.” Eddie attempted to reassure Buck, who was feeling terrible. He couldn’t shake the image of your face from his mind, the face that showed disappointment in his actions. Before Buck could respond, the truck halted and the team jumped out, ready to give help where needed. Buck stopped in his tracks as an all too familiar car was crushed before him. He tried not to panic, hoping that his suspicions were wrong. His eyes flicked to the number plate and his heart stopped. His feet were moving before his mind could catch up. He shouted your name, drawing Eddies attention. It took Eddie a few seconds to process what was happening. You had not long left the station, it couldn’t possibly be you. Right?
Buck arrived to your car first, nausea washed over him as he caught sight of your injured body. “Y/N? Hey, it’s me. I’m here.” You weren’t completely aware of what was happening, your eyes opened with a struggle. Your movements were weak as you turned your head to look at him. “Buck?” You spoke quietly, not completely aware of the situation at hand. “Don’t move, try and keep still.” He tried to remain as calm as he could, he didn’t want to scare you any more, he was terrified himself. Eddie ran right over to the car, his heart racing as he feared what he would find. His first instinct was to check the back seat, relief finally washing over him as he saw no sign of Christopher. Still, he needed to make sure, “Y/N, was Chris in the car?”
You shook your head, “Carlas.” Eddie felt a weight off his shoulders, knowing his son was safe. The weight soon came back when he saw the condition you were in. Your eyes rolled back, and you fell into unconsciousness. Bobby was running the scene, assigning Hen and Chim to medically assist you, and he grabbed the gear to support Buck and Eddie in freeing you from the car. Buck didn’t want to let go of your hand, but he knew he had to in order to get you out sooner. The team worked tirelessly, ensuring to be as careful as possible. Bobby handed the halligan to Buck, “Buck, you focus on getting the doors open. Diaz, grab the saw and be on standby.”
Buck groaned as he tried to pry the doors open, with no results, “Roofs too dented Cap, I can’t get it open.” Bobby nodded, and turned to Eddie, “Saws it is. Get in there Diaz, Buck, you too.” The roof was off in no time, Hen and Chim jumped straight in and equipped you with a neck brace, and got the back board in place to move you. Hen checked your vitals quickly, trying to make sure you were steady enough to be moved. “I’ve got a faint pulse, we gotta move.” They moved you out of you car quickly, and transferred you to the ambulance. “Trauma to the abdomen, possible internal bleeding. I’ll let the hospital know we’re en route.” Buck jumps into the back of the ambulance with Chimney, and instantly takes your hand in his. Hen places herself into the drivers seat, putting the ambulance into 911 mode and begins the journey as fast as she can to the nearest hospital.
Buck hated seeing you like this. He was filled with anxiety, the nausea constantly there as he studied your visible injuries. His heart sank with every second that went by, the more he thought about you laying there almost lifeless, expecting you to flatline any second now. “I’m sorry baby, we can’t leave things like this. I need you to get through this so I can apologise to you. I know I’m not the easiest person to love, and I also know that I’m the biggest pain in the ass, but I love you, and I need you. Please.” Buck sobbed as he held your hand tighter. Time seemed to be going extremely slow for Buck, yet moments later Hen was pulling up at the hospital. You were rushed in, Hen spewed all your information to the nurses as you were wheeled in and handed over. Buck, Hen and Chimney stood there as you were wheeled out of sight. One of the nurses stopped Buck from running after you, and he sat defeated in the waiting room. The rest of the team arrived soon after, Eddies face was similar to Bucks. Eddie spoke first, “Any update?” The lack of response from Buck had him on edge, fearing the worst. Luckily, Chimney filled the silence. “There’s no update, but no news it almost always good news.”
Eddie placed his hand on Bucks shoulder, giving it a reassuring squeeze before sitting down next to him. “How’re you holding up?” Buck didn’t look up, instead he kept his head in his hands. He couldn’t respond, he couldn’t trust his voice not to give out. His leg bounced anxiously, and despite not talking, his feelings were painfully obvious. Eddie could empathise, he knew exactly what was going through Bucks mind. It was happening to him too, but he concealed it as much as he could, knowing Buck needed him. “You know, each time we’re sat in these chairs, it never gets easier. You don’t have to talk, I get it. I think you should know that I’m right here for you, I understand. Y/N is going to be okay, that I have no doubt about. She’s my sister, and us Diaz’s, we don’t back down. We fight.” Eddie continues talking, and he’s not sure whether he’s trying to convince Buck or himself.
A few hours go by, and the team are waiting as patiently as they can for an update. Maddie had arrived some time ago, and was sat with Buck. She was not only there to support her brother, but also her brothers girlfriend, who Maddie had claimed as her best friend shortly after meeting her. Bobby hands a coffee to Buck and Eddie, who hadn’t moved from their seats since arriving. This changed moments later as a nurse approached, making them stand. Buck felt as if his legs were going to give way any second. The nurse cleared her throat, “She’s stable. She’s incredibly lucky to have made it out with the injuries she did, it could’ve been a lot worse. She’s awake, if you’d like to go see her.”
Buck didn’t stick around to hear whatever else the nurse had to say, he darted through the corridor until he got to your room. He stopped to take a deep breath, and stepped inside. He was scared to look at you, all he could picture was you covered in blood still. His head shot up as he heard a voice, your voice to be exact, “Buck?”
He was by your bedside in a blink of an eye, taking your hand in his. His eyes wandered over your body, taking in each of your injuries. His heart broke a little more with each one. He finally looked you in the eyes, and that’s when it hit him. His eyes filled up with tears, “Y/N…”
“Hey, don’t cry. I’m fine, see. I’m right here.” You gave his hand a squeeze, trying to give him the reassurance he needed. Buck took a seat close to your bed, your hand in his and against his lips. You move your hand up to his cheek and wipe his tears, Buck practically melted into your touch. “I really thought I had lost you.”
“I’m right here, I’m not going anywhere. I need to apologise for my reaction earlier, that could’ve been our last conversation earlier and left without saying goodbye, or telling you how much I love you.”
Buck shook his head, “You have nothing to apologise for, I’m the one that owes you an apology. I’m sorry that I’m not more careful when I’m out on a call, I shouldn’t be that reckless. I’m sorry that I can’t promise to walk through that door every night, safe and unscathed. I can appreciate how you feel now, and I promise I’ll try my hardest to be more careful. I love you, and I don’t want you ever feeling anything close to what I’ve felt today.” You wince as you sit up, making Buck panic. You push through the pain, and pull Buck to you. “Come here.” He stands from his chair and leans down to kiss you quickly. He carefully moves your hair from your face, ensuring he doesn’t touch any of your cuts or bruises.
“I love you too, and even though I’m petrified that you won’t make it home one day, I trust that you’ll try everything in your power to make sure you do. I’m proud of you, Evan.” As you spoke, Buck smiled to himself. A sense of relief washed over him. Before he could respond, you continued. “So… does this mean I can finally get a new car now?”
Buck chuckled, “You’re a pain in the ass, Diaz.”
“Takes one to know one, Buck.”

Hi! I saw that you were asking for Tommy/Buck prompts! What do you think about: "You're allowed to be happy, y'know."? With Tommy continuing to be just as gentle with Buck as he was with that kiss! I'm still not over it 🩷
Tommy kisses Buck on a Thursday and takes him on their first date the following Saturday. They go on two more official dates before Tommy reminds him his sister's getting married in a few weeks. They're five dates into their... well, whatever they are, when Buck watches Tommy dance with his newly married sister.
There's something so gentle about the way Tommy holds Maddie's manicured fingers delicately in his own. He has what can only be described as a gentlemanly hand on her waist and he's almost letting her take the lead like he's making sure he doesn't scare her away.
Maddie doesn't get scared anymore, not like she used to, but the fact that Tommy can put that amount of care into someone just in case makes Buck's eyes water. Even though he tries not to show too much emotion in public, he doesn't put any effort into holding the tears back. His sister just got married! He's allowed to feel.
"Buck!" Chimney shouts. He's running toward Maddie and Tommy with a faux scowl that couldn't reach his eyes even if he tried. "Get your man before he woos her with his fancy helicopter license."
"Pilot's license," Buck says as he stands, wiping subtly at his eyes. A smile tugs at the corner of Tommy's lips because he knows that's his influence. Buck had called it a helicopter license approximately five times before Tommy finally taught him how it all worked.
“There’s only one firefighter for me, Howie,” Maddie says dreamily. Buck can’t remember a time he’d ever heard her so wistful, not since she was a kid reading him fairytales when they were both supposed to be sleeping.
“And there’s only one Buckley for me,” Tommy adds, winking at Maddie dramatically before placing her hand in Chimney’s, “but I always have a plan b. Isn’t that what you taught me, Han?” Chimney swats at him half-heartedly, his attention already back on his bride.
Buck watches them for a few moments, reveling in the sheer joy that illuminates between them like no storm cloud in the world could cover the sunshine they feel. He's struck by a stray bolt of lightning--pun only partially intended--when he thinks about what she's gotten through to be here, but it settles into calmness when Tommy clears his throat from beside him.
Buck snaps from his thoughts and realizes he's been ignoring Tommy's outstretched hand. He clasps their hands together, fully intending to drag them back to their table, when Tommy clicks his tongue and pulls him close.
Then they're dancing underneath a backyard tent surrounded by their friends and family, and Buck thinks that he's never been as happy as he is right then.
There's guilt in the feeling, as there almost always is. There are people in need of saving, people who are hurt or scared or lonely, and here is Evan Buckley--happy. He can’t begin to comprehend why or even if he deserves that. He's made mistakes, he's lied to himself his entire life without intention, he never protected his sister or his team well enough, and now he's with a man who he really likes but isn't sure exactly what it means.
He doesn't deserve--
"You're allowed to be happy, y'know."
Tommy says the words like he's reading Buck's mind.
"I am happy," Buck says instinctively. Tommy chuckles and nods.
"You are," he agrees, "but you need to stop feeling so much shame about it."
His large palm presses against the small of Buck's back, leading him into a slow sway. He dips his head the few centimeters between them and rests their foreheads together like he's trying to keep Buck's attention. Like Buck's attention could be anywhere else when he's being held like this, with such tenderness that he feels weak in his knees.
"You're going to find happiness that you don't need to feel guilty for one day, Evan."
It feels like a promise, and Buck only hopes that Tommy's the one to keep it.

The parallel of Buck’s face at the start of 5x14 when Eddie is telling him that he practically doesn’t see the point to life, and then at the END of the ep where Eddie breaths in and says that yeah,,, maybe he does see the point to life is O U T S T A N D I N G to me like !!!! That man went through the 7 stages of grief in the first part. His features tensed, his look hardened, that man was scared,,, then after working so hard he finally manages to get a positive reaction from Eddie and he’s so relived and content he could wag his tail had he one 😫

Nightmares
Eddie Diaz x GN! Reader
Taglist | Request | Wattpad
Main Masterlist | 9-1-1 Masterlist
Summary: Nightmares have never been a good thing, especially for Eddie.
Warnings: Mentions of Death
A/N: I wrote this before the most recent episode (Shh! No spoilers), so… But if I knew I would have wrote it in. Maybe in a rewrite.
Words: 1.2k words
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was about 11 o’clock at night when I was awakened by my phone. I didn’t know who could be calling me at this hour, especially when everyone knows I have a deposition for a very big case tomorrow. I leaned over, grabbing my phone off the nightstand.
This must be important. I didn’t even think to look at who called before answering. “Hello,” I spoke into the phone, my voice still groggy from just waking up.
“Y/N? It’s dad,” I heard Christopher say through the phone. I quickly sat up after hearing his words.
“What’s wrong with your dad, Chris?” I asked in a slight panic.
“There are crashing sounds coming from his room, and-“ Christopher was cut off by a loud scream coming from somewhere in the background. “-and he keeps yelling like that. He locked his door, and I can’t get in.”
I moved out of my bed and quickly changed into some clothes. I was putting on my pants, with my phone sitting between my shoulder and ear, as I started to speak again. “Okay, Chris. I want you to go to your room and stay there. I’ll be there soon,” I said calmly.
“Okay,” I heard Chris say back, through the phone. And with that, the phone went silent, for a second before I heard a door close. I now knew Christopher was in his room, safe from whatever his father had going on. “Please hurry, Y/N.”
I grabbed my keys and left the house. “I know. I am,” I spoke, getting in my car. “I’m on my way.”I heard a slight “okay” before Chris hung up the phone.
Tumblr media
10 minutes was all it took for me to make it to the Diaz house. I quickly turned off the car and ran to the front door. Using my key, I opened their door and made my way in.
As I walked through the house, I walked past Christopher’s room, finding Christopher with his head sticking out. “Go back in your room, Chris. Let me calm your dad down, and I’ll be back to put you back to bed.” I placed a kiss on his forehead and made my way to Eddie’s door.
Before I could knock, a scream was heard from the inside, along with a loud crash. I placed my fist against the door and knocked. “Eddie?” I asked in a motherly voice. It was silent.
I tried the door, but it was locked, so I knocked again. “Eddie, open the door.” Once again it was silent. That was, until the sound of a lock unlocking was heard. I took a second before going to open the door again.
When the door opened, allowing me in, I walked into the room, and the sound of someone sobbing was heard. I maneuvered my way through the room before finding Eddie sitting against his dresser with his chest to his knees and his face rested in his arms. I walked over to Eddie, sitting down next to him.
“I’m sorry,” Eddie said through his tears.
I slowly rubbed his back to comfort him. “What happened?” I asked.
Eddie was quiet for a second before he began speaking. “You all we’re dead,” he said softly, choking on his sobs.
“Who?”
“My friends, family… you,” he mumbled. He looked up at me with tears running down his face. I suddenly felt myself begin to tear up as I listened to Eddie speak. “The most important people in my life, gone. And this isn’t the first time.”
“What do you mean?” I asked, looking at Eddie, curious by what he meant.
“I mean that before I would have dreams of losing someone, but now my dream was of everyone. We were all having dinner together when the building collapsed… I was the only one to make it out.” He paused.
I patted his back again, allowing him to let it all out. I looked at Eddie with a sad smile as he stared down at the floor. “Everyone else was gone, and there was nothing I could do,” he said a little louder.
I waited a second before saying, “Well, that was all a dream. I’m here. Chris’ in the other room. And all of your friends will be there when you get back to work. You’re not losing us.”
“Well, what if I do? What if I lose you like I lost my friends in combat?”
Now I knew what this was about. He wasn’t just having dreams about us, but about them too. The people who he fought with. The ones who had his back when he was in war. I didn’t know much about Eddie’s war life, but I knew that he found family within those people like he did me and the 118. So, I could understand why this is so hard for him.
“You won’t loose us. We will always be with you, whether it’s physically or here,” I said, pointing to Eddie’s chest, where his heart was. He sniffled, and his sobs began to slow.
“Come on. Let’s get off the floor and into the bed,” I said, helping Eddie up. We slowly moved towards the bed.
As Eddie laid down on his pillow, I began to notice something shimmering, in my peripheral vision, under the glow of his lamp. I turn and see a photo frame on the floor with broken glass surrounding it. I walked over to the broken frame, bent down, and picked it up. It was a photo of Eddie, Chris, and I at the park. The photo had a white scratch through the middle, maybe from when it fell, and the glass broke. But that didn’t stop the smile that went across my face.
“Y/N?” I heard from behind me. I turned back to Eddie. He was looking up at me with pleading brown eyes. It was almost like looking at a sad puppy. “Don’t leave,” he said. I once again gave him a sad smile before setting the photo down on the dresser and getting in the bed with him.
We laid in his bed together. I held him with his back to my chest. My arm laid across Eddie’s side and our legs were intertwined with each other’s.
A knock at the door made Eddie and I turn to find Chris standing in the door frame. “Dad, are you okay?” He asked, earning a smile from Eddie. He groans, shifting under my hold. “Yeah, Buddy. I’m okay, now.” I smile as I watch the small interaction between the two. “Can I sleep with you guys, tonight?” Chris asked. With a chuckle Eddie and I responded with an “Of course, bub.” and “Yeah. Sure you can.”
Christopher was ecstatic. He tried his best to speed walk over to the bed, and when he finally made it towards us, he got in, curling up under Eddie. I turned around so that I could lean over to turn off the light and got comfortable once more, holding Eddie in my arms. The thought of us all together made me smile. And hopefully, this makes Eddie realize that we do love him, and that we would never leave his side.
“I love you, dad,” Christopher said, sleepily.
“I love you too, bud.”

Evan Buckley Masterlist
Series Masterlist
Summary: (Y/n) distances herself from Evan when the people at her college believe he shouldn't be with someone younger and inexperienced like her. But things change when she falls pregnant.
Enjoy.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tumblr media
A smile worked its way onto Evan's lips and he paused, looking down at the pair of arms that wound their way around his waist. He felt (Y/n)'s face press into his back between his shoulder blades and her palms spread out over his chest, gluing herself to him.
He could feel each shallow breath she took which fanned through his shirt and heated up his back.
"Have you had a drink yet?" He pushed away the bowl of salad so it was further back on the counter before he reached his hands down. Both hands moved to cup (Y/n)'s wrists and he tilted his head back, looking up at the ceiling as he wanted for an answer.
When he didn't get a response, he knew the answer was no. He gave her wrists a squeeze and slowly turned round in her arms so he could tangle his arms around her and keep her pinned up against him.
"You'll make yourself ill," Evan scolded with a stern expression that started to fade the moment (Y/n) smiled sheepishly up at him.
"I'm nervous." It wasn't much of an excuse, but it was the truth.
(Y/n) was too nervous to sit down, too nervous to stop and take a full breath and too panicked to think about trying to get a drink and keep her fluids up.
Evan's team were coming round for tea.
This was going to be the first time (Y/n) would meet the people he worked with, the people he classed as his family. (Y/n) knew what they meant to him. She knew his Captain had practically become his surrogate father and his colleagues were like his siblings that kept him grounded and got him through each shift at work.
And his big sister was coming over too. Maddie was the one who raised Evan since he was a child, she was the one he looked up to and seeked her approval of almost every aspect of his life. He strived to make her proud.
This was a big family unit and it wasn't something that (Y/n) was used to. She wasn't close to her parents and she didn't have any siblings. If this dinner tonight didn't go well, (Y/n) would ruin everything. She would make things awkward for Evan when all she wanted to do was make him proud and get along with his friends. She needed to gel with them and slowly intergrate herself with them so they could all get along.
There was nothing worse than feeling like the odd one out and feeling like nobody liked her or thought of her as one of their own. (Y/n) didn't want to be on the outside looking in.
"Baby…" Evan moved his hands up until he could cup (Y/n)'s face and brush his thumbs beneath her eyes. She was drifting. Panicking. Overthinking. "If I love you, then everyone else will too. Stop panicking and go get something to drink, I've barely seen you drink all day."
Leaning down, Evan captured her with a kiss before he walked her backwards and nudged her towards the fridge. Passing out the first night she met the team wouldn't be the best way to start things.
(Y/n) found a can of pop from the fridge and got Evan another beer which she barely managed to put on the counter without dropping when there was a knock at the front door.
She wasn't ready.
Maybe it would have been a better idea to try and meet everyone slowly, individually. Start out with Maddie and see how they got along, and then move on to meet Eddie, then Bobby and so on.
But it just so happened that everyone had today off shift, and that wasn't something that happened often. And (Y/n) couldn't help but agree when Evan asked if she wanted to take this chance and meet the team. Diving right in would get rid of her anxiety because she would meet everyone in one fell swoop. Rather than dividing everyone up and doing it in stages. This would be quicker.
And (Y/n) knew Evan wanted to introduce (Y/n) now because they were going for their twelve-week scan next week. That was when he wanted to tell everyone that he was going to be a dad.
He wanted to invite Maddie out somewhere, just the three of them, and tell her that she was going to be an auntie. That he was going to have his first child and see his sister smile and be proud of him. And then tell the team. And Evan couldn't tell any of them without them meeting (Y/n) first. Introductions first, big news later. Evan wasn't great at hiding secrets.
"Here we go," Evan murmured softly, moving his hands to (Y/n)'s shoulders so he could kiss the back of her head to keep her calm. He weaved around behind her and moved towards the front door with anticipation, wondering who was first to arrive.
(Y/n) took a quick gulp of her drink and wrung her hands out in front of her to try and rid some of the nervous tension she felt.
Her stomach was knotting itself up and she felt like she was going to be sick. She'd already thrown up everything she had for breakfast and lunch which had put Evan on edge all afternoon. Especially since he knew she had barely had two drinks all day because of a mixture of nerves and morning sickness.
She moved round towards the kitchen island and leaned on the edge, pressing her hands into the sharp counter that also jabbed into her hips as she pushed up on her toes. Her lips rolled together nervously and she felt her chest tightening up, unable to let her catch a proper breath.
"Okay, guys, this is (Y/n)." Evan couldn't quite hide the smile on his lips and it made (Y/n)'s stomach skip a beat.
Her eyes followed Evan was he walked back into the apartment, his hands on a woman's shoulders who was a good few inches shorter than him. He gave her shoulders a squeeze and leaned his chin on top of her head before he glanced to his right.
"This is Chimney, and this is my big sister Maddie."
It was clear by the way Evan clung to her that she was his sister (Y/n) had heard so much about. She had a bright, inviting smile and her eyes creased when she smiled. Her neck was lathered in three different necklaces and she had a few rings on both hands. With her hair pinned up on one side and her nails painted dark blue to match the blazer and trousers she was wearing, she looked lovely. Fashionable, even.
(Y/n) was taken a little by surprise when Maddie reached out to hug her. She wasn't used to making a lot of friends or meeting the family of friends. And Evan was someone special. (Y/n) wanted to get along with anyone who was important to him.
Being hugged straight away by Maddie felt like she was being intergrated and welcomed with open arms from the off-set.
"It's so lovely to finally meet you, Buck talks about you, a lot."
She could feel the blood rushing to her head making her sway on her feet as she clung to Maddie and squeezed her in return.
"All good I hope?" When they parted, (Y/n) moved towards the kitchen as Evan went back to the door at the sound of another knock. "Do you want something to drink?"
She found a bottle of wine and a beer from the fridge, holding them out so they could choose. Making herself useful stopped (Y/n) from panicking so much and gave her something to focus on. She could hear Evan laughing at something, or someone, as the sound of footsteps thundered through the apartment.
Evan could feel his own nerves dwindling down when he showed the rest of the team through into the kitchen. Where Bobby and Hen immediately sat down at the bar stools next to Chimney who was leaning casually on the counter.
But when Evan looked over at (Y/n) and Maddie, he could feel his heart hammering out in his chest. They were laughing. Their heads were leaned close together, their laughs were mixing together and they were fumbling to try and open the bottle of wine while Maddie steadied two wine glasses in her hands.
That was what he had been hoping for. Seeing the two most important people in his life getting along like a house on fire.
"You must be (Y/n)." Bobby grinned and leaned his elbows on the counter when the younger girl placed two different cans of pop in front of him so he could choose. She could tell from the way he held himself and the description she got from Evan that this had to be Bobby. And she knew he didn't drink, much like her for the next few months.
She nodded with a tender smile and passed a glass over to Eddie and one to Hen while Maddie took over pouring the drinks.
"This is our Captain Bobby. That's Hen, and that's Eddie. This is my girl, (Y/n)."
A smile lit up (Y/n)'s face when Evan walked behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist. Reeling her into his chest so he could merge his lips against the top of her head. He swayed them from side to side with a bright smile when (Y/n) gave his hands a reassuring squeeze.
"It's great to meet you, Evan's told me a few stories from your station."
"God, what has he told you?" Eddie threw his head back with a grin and took a large gulp of wine as he slumped forward on the counter. But his intrigue only sparked when (Y/n) smirked around her drink and held his gaze.
Oh, she was going to play that game. Evan had told her a few stories then, as ammunition for a good night.
"You call him Evan?" Hen held her glass to her lips and leaned her shoulders back against the fridge with one arm wrapped around her chest. It had been so long since any of them had heard or called Evan by his name that she almost forgot what it was. There were still a few people who referred to Chimney as Howie, but Hen didn't know anyone who called Evan by his first name. Not even Maddie anymore.
(Y/n) nodded, moving her free hand to play with the chain of her necklace. It was how Evan introduced himself to her. He didn't say his name was Buck, because that was his nickname and on a first introduction he could hardly say his name was Buck Buckley.
But she kept using his name because she knew Evan loved it. She was the only person who called him by his first name and it did something to him. It excited him and grounded him and made him feel at home.
"Why?"
"Because he likes it." Her response made them all grin, and when she turned to the right where Evan was taking the lasagna out the oven, she could see him smile. His cheeks flushed from both adrenaline and the heat of the oven he was leaning into. "He only got the nickname for work," She added quietly, although no one was complaining and there was no need to explain further.
"Did you?" Chimney looked over at Evan with raised brows. "I thought it was just your nickname, from college or whatever."
"There were three Evans in his class at the fire academy, they had to differentiate."
Evan paused, halfway between the oven and the table with his eyes following after his girl.
She remembered. She remembered that story which he had told her on their second date when he mentioned most people would call him Buck, not Evan. He didn't think it would stick or that it was something that important, but (Y/n) remembered. She wanted to know why he had a nickname and why he seemed to love her using his proper name.
His eyes followed (Y/n) as she took the salad bowl over to the table along with the bottle of wine.
A few looks passed around the kitchen as everyone grabbed their glasses and followed to sit down since it was clearly time to eat. They were all thinking the same thing, as clear as day.
She was a keeper.
(Y/n) felt quite at ease when she had Evan sat on her left with his hand resting on her thigh. She had Eddie on her right, Bobby at the right end of the table, Hen at the other end and then Maddie and Chimney sat opposite them. It didn't feel as cramped as (Y/n) panicked it would and she could tell she was already fitting in with them and it felt like they were all glueing together.
"So, Buck said you're in college, what are you studying?" Hen leaned over to add some salad to her plate and looked over at (Y/n).
The conversation was flowing rather easily between them all. It was something (Y/n) was worried would be stiffled and broken, but she had been panicking for nothing.
Although just the thought of college made her stomach give an awful twist and sent her knee jittering against Evan's.
"I'm doing a degree in nursing." She tried to smile and tilted her head down towards her plate, but she didn't feel so hungry. Not after throwing everything up throughout the day and now feeling like her stomach was doing summersaults.
"Oh wow, so when we get busted up on shift, we can just get (Y/n) to patch us up."
"We're both medics Chim, so is Eddie." Hen waved her hand across at him as if he had forgotten what they all did for a living. Especially when Maddie mumbled a quiet "And I'm a qualified nurse too." in his ear.
Not that none of them wouldn't go to (Y/n), but they all pitched in to look after each other. And no one suspected Evan would be willing to share his girl, she was going to be his personal nurse and his only. He wasn't the sharing type, he was the jealous type.
"Well it's good news for me," Evan murmured and pressed his lips to the top of (Y/n)'s head.
"Yeah, danger-prone Daphne can have his own nurse so we don't have to patch him up." Bobby grinned and dodged quickly when Evan flicked his fork across the table at him, splattering red sauce on the collar of his shirt.
He wasn't as bad as he used to be when he was a teenager. Evan wasn't vying for anyone's attention anymore. He knew the people around him could see him for who he truly was. He didn't have to get hurt or break a bone for someone- his parents- to take notice of him and give him some love and attention. He had all the attention he wanted.
Evan kept his right arm looped over the back of (Y/n)'s chair and curled his hand around her shoulder. He leaned back in his seat and parted his knees to the side while his left elbow propped up on the table. It felt good to have (Y/n)'s head on his shoulder and her fingers trailing up and down his thigh to give her something to focus on.
"Don't you like Buck's cooking? He's taking lessons from Cap."
(Y/n) looked to the right when Eddie noticed she had barely touched her plate whereas the rest of them were almost finished. They were used to eating quick, everyone at the station had developed a high metabolism because of how little time they had to eat meals.
"I- I'm still a little nervous I guess." She was hungry, but she didn't feel like she could eat much. She still had a full can of pop left which she had barely touched and she knew if Evan noticed he would be watching her closer like a hawk.
She tilted her head to the left and pressed her forehead into Evan's neck, breathing in his scent and feeling the way his throat moved when he laughed at one of Chimney's jokes. The atmosphere was good; there was no need for (Y/n) to be nervous. They were all getting on like a house on fire.
But (Y/n) closed her eyes and moved her free hand to wrap around her waist when her stomach twisted.
She wasn't sure if she was starting to feel sick or if her nerves were getting the better of her. With her temple pressed into Evan's neck, (Y/n) couldn't tell for a moment if it was him or her who was beginning to sweat. The trickle of water that slithered down her neck told (Y/n) she was the one starting to get flushed.
She could feel her ears tuning out of the conversation around the table, she could barely hear what Evan was saying or work out what he was laughing at.
When her stomach gave an awful, twisted cramp, (Y/n) jolted into Evan and inbedded her arm into her waist. She felt Evan's arm loop tighter around her shoulders and his head tilted down to look at her.
"Okay?"
(Y/n) wanted to smile, she wanted to nod and say she was fine, but she couldn't find her voice or the will to lie. She wasn't so sure she did feel okay after all as another cramp burned in her abdomen.
Her chin pressed down into her chest and she pushed her palm down onto Evan's thigh to use him as leverage to stand up. She could feel their eyes fall on her as the conversation tapered off and quietened down when she turned away and headed into the kitchen. Her hands started to shake, one arm still around her waist with her other hand trembling against the counter that she used to stop herself from falling down.
As soon as the bin was within reach, (Y/n) doubled over just in time to throw up. Her hands gripped the bin and her stomach clenched as she doubled over and bent her knees, pressing her kneecaps into the bin to stay upright.
"Oh no." Evan dropped his fork on his plate and got up, jogging from the table into the kitchen.
He smoothed his hand up and down (Y/n)'s back and gently moved her hair behind her ear before she threw up in it. His lips merged with the back of her head as he moved both hands to her hips and held her up when she looked like she was going to fall into the bin and take it down to the floor.
He couldn't tell whether this was morning sickness acting up or if (Y/n)'s nerves were getting the better of her. Or maybe it was a mixture of both.
"I'm s-sorry-"
"Don't apologise, you're okay." Evan curled his left arm around (Y/n)'s waist and gently reeled her up into his chest while he grabbed a glass with his right hand and filled it with water. He handed the glass over but his lips curled into a grimace when (Y/n) tried to take a mouthful but ended up coughing it back into the bin.
(Y/n) let Evan take her weight and leaned back into him, gripping his wrist when his arm secured back around her middle like an iron bar preventing her from flopping down to the floor.
His lips meshed against the back of her head while his other hand gave her hip a reassuring squeeze. When she nodded, he turned them around and gently walked them back towards the table where all eyes were watching them with worry and apprehension.
"Was that the nerves, or the cooking? Should we be worried?" Maddie tried to break the tension and looked down at her plate that was just about cleared. Did they need to worry about food poisoning or any of the ingredients being off, or was this just (Y/n)'s nerves playing her up?
(Y/n) tried to smile but she couldn't find it in herself when another throbbing cramp burned in her abdomen and had her arms binding around her waist. She let Evan slump her down in her chair and suddenly she didn't care about everyone watching them. She let herself fold over and pressed her forehead down against the edge of the table with her hands meshed into her stomach.
"Are you okay?" Eddie clamped his hand down on the back of (Y/n)'s chair and turned to face her and Evan. He wasn't so sure this was nerves when she looked like she was in pain.
His eyes flickered over to Evan who sat back down in his seat, one hand moving up and down (Y/n)'s back while his other hand was pressed tightly against his mouth to hide his worried expression.
"I… um," (Y/n) tried to lift herself up and look at Evan.
She didn't know if she was alright or not, this didn't feel normal, but then again, she wasn't sure what was supposed to be normal anymore. Was this normal because she hadn't been eating and drinking properly? Or was this something they should be worrying about?
She couldn't tell them she was pregnant. Evan wanted to wait. He wanted to sit Maddie down and tell her first and give her the scan picture they were going to get next week. Then he wanted to tell the team separately. She didn't want to ruin things and tell them this way or panic any of them. This was the first time they were all meeting, (Y/n) wanted to get along with them not worry them for no reason.
"(Y/n)'s pregnant… we're having a baby."
Evan had to tell them. He didn't like the pain (Y/n) seemed to be feeling or the fact that she hadn't kept anything down today or much of yesterday either. If she was in pain he might have to take her to the emergency room. And he had his team here, at least one of them could assess her and see whether this was an emergency or not.
He watched the round of surprised faces stare back at him like he'd grown a second head in front of them all.
But it was Maddie who his eyes focused more intently on and the way her hands started flapping at her sides like she was a bird growing wings. Her lips parted into a smile and she tapped her hand against the table before something seemed to dawn on her.
"Oh, maybe we should take you to a doctor sweetie, just to be safe."
"No, it's j-just cramps-"
"Baby you shouldn't be getting those at all. You're probably dehydrated, you need to see a doctor." Evan slid his arm around her waist and reeled her back into his chest so she couldn't fold over again.
He watched carefully as Eddie gently took her wrist to feel her pulse before he pressed his hand against her temple and then lifted her eyelid to check her pupils. "If you are dehydrated, that could cause the cramps, you should get checked, maybe get an IV and fluids back in your system."
"Alright, let's go." Evan kept his arms looped around (Y/n)'s waist while Eddie stood in front of her for precaution as Evan eased her up. "I've had a drink-"
"I've only had one, I'll drive you." Eddie patted Evan's shoulder and checked his pocket for his phone and his keys while everyone round the table got up.
"I'll go with you." Maddie rubbed her hand up and down Evan's arm and reached over to take (Y/n)'s hand.
***
"How we doin'?"
(Y/n) tightened her hand around Evan's and moved her free hand to curl around his bicep. She pulled his arm so it was pinned into her chest while she pressed her nose and mouth against his exposed arm. She could feel her heart hammering against her chest and adrenaline pooling in her stomach when she looked around the waiting room.
The team were all here.
She knew Eddie and Maddie had offered to stay since Eddie drove them down and Maddie travelled down with them just to make sure they were all okay, but (Y/n) didn't expect them to stay. And she thought Bobby would have taken Chimney and Hen home.
All five of them were sat in the waiting room, looking very relaxed and not a bit put out or annoyed.
(Y/n) had dampened the mood of the night by needing a trip to the emergency room. She thought they would have gone home or gone back to one of their homes and finished the night off together. (Y/n) was expecting them to call Evan and ask if she was okay and say how she had ruined their first night meeting her.
She was expecting him to get a phone call from one of them to ask how old she was and if he was serious about having a baby with her. She didn't see their faces round the table when Evan told them; (Y/n) didn't know if they were going to be happy or concerned.
"You… you all stayed?" She looked around the waiting room before her eyes looked up at Evan who smiled softly down at her. He leaned to peck her temple while his other hand cupped the back of her neck to keep her close.
"Of course we stayed, we wanted to make sure you're both okay… you are okay, right?" Bobby planted his hands down on his hips as he stood up, looking between them with a cautious smile. Since he couldn't see tears or panicked looks and since (Y/n) seemed to be discharged, he guessed things were okay.
"Someone's dehydrated, but an hour on an IV's done the trick."
(Y/n) kept her face smothered in Evan's arm and clung to him tighter. Perhaps she should have listened to him earlier when he told her to have a few more drinks and try to drink some water. The cramps were because she wasn't eating or drinking properly but since they had disappeared and her blood pressure was fine, she was being discharged.
And their scan for next week had been moved up to tomorrow, just as a precaution so they could make sure the baby was okay and had no further issues.
"You didn't have to wait," (Y/n) murmured softly as they all made a beeline down the corridor, walking slowly towards the exit.
"Oh please, you're one of us now. We look after each other, we weren't going anywhere without you."
She could feel tears burning in her eyes at Hen's words and she smiled against Evan's arm as he gave her hand a tight squeeze. She was one of them. The team loved her. They didn't think badly of her or think of her as some little kid trying to use and abuse Evan. They knew she loved him and they knew she was going to fit in and be one of them.
They looked after their own, if one of them was in the hospital then they would all be there to make sure they were okay.
Her head turned to the right when she felt Maddie walking at her side and the older girl suddenly looped their arms together and leaned close to her. Maddie pressed her chin on (Y/n)'s shoulder, grinning madly between her and Evan like there was some big secret hanging in the air.
"So… I'm gonna be an aunt, finally?"
"You're happy?" (Y/n) felt Evan scoff beside her and he leaned down to press his lips against her hairline.
"I told you she'd be happy, stop worrying." He almost found it funny that (Y/n) asked Maddie the same thing she'd asked him. He wondered if she would ask everyone special in their lives if they were happy about the news. And he had a strange feeling that if she asked his parents, they would somehow be happy. They may not get along well with Evan, but they would be pleased he was at this stage in his life where he had found someone brilliant to settle down with.
"I'm thrilled, my little brother's having a baby. He's gonna be a big papa bear." Maddie squeezed (Y/n)'s arm and grinned as if she was the one who was having a baby. Her expression was so giddy that it made (Y/n)'s blood spark with adrenaline.
She agreed with that. Evan was going to be a great, cuddly, soft papa bear when they had this baby.
***
When Evan walked through the door, he fought to kick off his boots and let his shoulders drop down now that he was inside. It was as if the bed was crying out his name, telling him it had been over twenty four hours since he'd last got some sleep. He needed to go to bed.
He slung his work bag down by his boots, he would sort it out and tidy up in the morning; it was too late and he was too tired to bother now.
He dragged his feet behind him and shuffled across into the kitchen, rooting through the fridge for a drink. But when he turned around, his brows narrowed and he leaned his head to the side.
Why was the lamp on in the living room?
Downing the whole bottle of water in one swoop, Evan left it on the counter and walked out the kitchen. He passed the dining table, his head still tilted to one side as he tried to see if (Y/n) was still down here or if she had just left the light on for him.
His lips rolled into a thin line and his hands found his hips and he looked around the living room.
It was nearly eleven o'clock at night, and here she was. Sat cross-legged on the rug in nothing but one of Evan's lounge shirts. Her hair was tied up in a messy bun, she had a pen clenched between her lips, a red marker pen tucked behind her ear. Two textbooks were laid out on the coffee table and revision cards littered the floor like she was performing some kind of omen or seance.
After dragging his eyes up and down her body a few times, Evan realised she had her headphones in. She hadn't heard him come in.
He made sure he wasn't about to stand on any of her revision cards and slowly went down on his knees behind her. He watched to make sure she wasn't writing any notes down; Evan knew how precise and neat (Y/n) made her notes and he didn't want to scare her and make her ruin them.
Satisfied she wasn't writing, he leaned forward and clamped his hands down on her hips. His chest pressed into her back and his face tucked into her neck, shivering as she screamed, spitting out the pen she had between her lips. A jolt ran through her body that jerked forward near the coffee table and ragged, panting breaths left her lips as she whipped her head to the right to look over at him.
"Evan!"
(Y/n) slapped his wrist and fumbled to move her legs and bring her knees up to her stomach. She let herself slouch back into his chest with her head on his shoulder. Her eyes closed tight and she took out her earphones, tossing them on the table now that her heart was pounding in her ears instead.
She hadn't realised it was so late. Once she'd gotten into the swing of revising, she lost herself and track of time. It was something to pass the time while waiting for Evan to come home. She didn't like being on her own during the night if he wasn't here. It didn't feel right without him.
"Sorry," She could tell by his tone that he wasn't really apologetic, and the feeling of his lips smiling against her neck also told her otherwise. "Do you know what time it is, baby?"
His words feathered over her skin while he started to press open-mouthed kisses along her neck and up towards her jaw. He was distracting. (Y/n) found herself melting into his touch and focusing on his actions rather than responding to his words.
She felt his left arm loop around her waist, pinning her into his chest while his right hand trailed up and down her inner thigh. With her knees pulled up like this, the shirt she was wearing had ridden up to her hips, giving him a perfect view of her bare legs and the top of her underwear.
"I got carried away," She whispered softly, turning her head so she could capture him in a kiss.
She had to keep herself busy somehow with Evan being out at work all day and into the evening.
"I think you've studied enough for one night, baby."
His hand left her thigh, but only so he could take the marker from behind her ear and toss it onto the table where he flipped both textbooks closed. He gave the notebooks a gentle push out of his way before his fingers latched back around her thigh and started to squeeze.
He inched backwards, pulling (Y/n) with him and turning her around so he could loop her thighs around his hips. He didn't exactly give her a choice and his baiting grin told her this was non-negotiable.
"I have a test tomorrow," (Y/n) leaned forward and smothered her face against his shoulder while her arms curved around the back of his neck. "I need to pass."
(Y/n) knew this test only counted for twenty-five percent of the final grade, but she still had to pass. She needed to pass so she didn't have to re-take the test or God forbid, redo some of this year again. Her grades were good, but her panic levels were even worse and (Y/n) was feeling the pressure. Everything had timed out perfectly thus far.
Meeting and falling for Evan, passing every class and each yearly test so she didn't have to retake anything. And now she was pregnant, her due date lined up with her graduation date. She could graduate before she had the baby. Get all her classes and tests out the way now while she was pregnant, graduate, and then college would be finished.
(Y/n) could have their baby, take some time and then find a job and start a new job alongside her new little family.
So that meant she had to graduate this year. She had to pass this test. She had to study.
"And you will, but you need to rest and go in with a clear head. Come on, we're off to bed." Both his hands slid beneath her scrunched up shirt so he could grip her bum as he pushed up to his feet and lifted her up with him.
He knew this was important, but he also knew that (Y/n) had been studying for long enough and she knew all the subsections she was going to be quizzed on tomorrow. She was prepared for this, but Evan needed her to come to bed and get some sleep so she was fully prepared and not going in feeling sick.
"I know, but-"
"No buts. You'll do great because you're my smart-ass girl. I'm off tomorrow so I'll drop you off and I'll pick you up. Eddie and Chris have invited us round for tea tomorrow, if you're up for it too."
He could feel (Y/n) grinning into his shoulder as he began walking them both up the stairs.
Since most of the class- and a few others on campus- had found out she was pregnant, curtesy of Sandra, (Y/n) had been anxious about going in. No one said anything, barely anyone glared or even looked at her like she thought they would. It wasn't like high school, there was no stigma attached to having a baby in college.
It was only the small cliché of girls in (Y/n)'s class that still thought she was doing this for a game.
But seeing how thrilled Evan was about having their baby dampened down (Y/n)'s nerves, and she felt better when he could drop her off. Especially if he could pick her up from class too. (Y/n) practically ran to the jeep to get away. It was like Evan had become her suit of armour.
As much as the girls wanted and loved to gossip, none of them said anything when they saw Evan waiting outside. (Y/n) felt brave enough to go to class and get through each lesson, knowing that when she left, most of the time, Evan was right there to pick her up.
"Sounds perfect."
You thought the world of Maddie, always had and always will.
So when she showed up on your doorstep, tears running down her face with bruises everywhere? You couldn’t believe your eyes. “Maddie? Oh my god, come in.” You ushered her in quickly closing the door behind her.
“What happened sweetheart?” You always called her nicknames.
She shook her head immediately as you opened your arms, “I’ve got you, don’t worry. Wanna tell me what’s wrong?” You took her hand and sat her down on your couch before sitting next to her.
“Doug.”
Just one word was more than enough for your blood to boil. Her husband, the piece of trash he was, always treated her horribly. Ruining her mental health and wearing down the strong woman you knew she was. He never deserved such a wonderful woman.
“He… I can’t do it anymore Y/n.” Her eyes were glossy as her lip quivered. You could make out a forming bruise on the side of her face, as you softly traced it. “That’s okay, you’re so strong. I know you are baby, I can help you leave him. Is that what you want? Cause I swear, I will pack my shit up and we can leave.”
Maddies heart was racing, most likely the adrenaline from running away. But also having you so serious, so attentive and determined to helping her leave.
Through her years as your best friend she found herself naturally drawn to you, and you were always there for her. The first night she confided in you, you didn’t ask any questions. Just opened your door and your arms as refuge. You never had any good vibes when it came from Doug, and your anger only amplified when you realised what he was doing to Maddie.
“No, you can’t Y/n. Your life is here.” She shook her head at the idea of you leaving with her, for her. “That’s not your decision to make Mads. I have friends here sure, but most of my family is either in L.A or out of America. Friends come and go, but you’re more than that.” Her eyes flicked up at your words, eyebrows furrowed.
What is that supposed to mean?
“What does that mean?” You sighed as you grabbed onto her hands, “This isn’t the right time to say this to you Maddie.” She clutched onto your hands tighter.
“Please, just say it.”
“I love you.”
Her world stopped, the words she’d dreamed of hearing.
“I- I’ve loved you for so long. How was I supposed to not? Maddie you are unbelievably sweet, and kind, gorgeous, intelligent. God you’re perfect. And I am so sorry that Doug took that away from you. But you deserve to live. You deserve to help people, to live life without looking over your shoulder or worrying about angering him. If we leave. I promise I will do anything to keep you safe.”
She didn’t stop the tears as they rolled down her face, wiped away courtesy of you. “Let’s go.” She nodded as you grinned, “Really?” Maddies face broke out in a small smile, “Anywhere to be with you.”
And you did.
For the next hour you spent grabbing all the essentials, clothes, memories, documents etc. You texted another one of your bestfriends that you were leaving, and that she should come over and take inventory before selling your furniture. She was an avid user of Facebook Marketplace.
Luckily you were on good terms with your landlord and your lease was expiring in a week. As long as your friends sold everything of yours, you’d be in the clear.
Home isn’t a place, it’s a person.
And yours was currently right next to you.
It’d taken you and Maddie a bit of time to get on your feet, having crashed with her brother Buck who was nothing but welcoming.
“So you’re the reason she finally left him?” Maddie was currently in the shower, allowing Buck to finally question you. “No, she wanted to leave. I just helped her, I mean you did steal her car.” Buck jokingly gasped as he clutched his chest, “She gave that to me!”
“Sure thing Buckley.” You replied as you took a sip from your glass. “But, seriously, thank you. I have no idea where she’d be right now without you. And she really does love you, I can see you love her too.” Your smile was evident at his words.
“I do, I have for a long time. I’m just lucky. Now speaking of gay couples, you and Eddie.” Buck groaned as you giggled, “I see the tension everyday! You can’t tell me there’s nothing going on there!”
“She’s right, Evan has a crush.” Maddie joined in as Evan shook his head, “The two of you are menaces to society.” The three of you sat down on the couch and continued to bicker. Seeing you getting along with her family so well made Maddie’s heart swell. You were everything and more.
And you proved your love for her over and over. Always supporting her, handling her emotions and caring for her. When she woke up in the night after a nightmare, you were always there to calm her down. When she felt anxious, you listen to her concerns and assured her.
The two of you settled into life in L.A easily. You’d always wanted to live there, longing for home when you moved to study. Your parents were nothing but lovely to Maddie, which made her feel at ease.
She became close with Josh, and Chimney whilst you grew closer to Eddie, Evan and Hen.
So when it came time to the two of you discussing starting a family, you were nervous but confident in asking Chimney.
And out of respect for him and his mother, you named her Jee-Yun.
Maddie couldn’t help but become emotional when she thought about how far she’d come. From the days where she feared returning home to now, when she counted the minutes till she could home to her daughter and wife. Her family.
But she wasn’t in the clear yet.
Doug was still alive.
