Frye is not a Vampire Squid.
It's one thing to headcanon something, but it's another to pass it around a fact, which is why i have to say: Frye is not canonically a vampire squid. This idea originated from a popular twitter thread made at the time of Splatoon 3's direct, and the evidence it's based on is...weak. And yet I still see this info passed around... Yeah I think Frye is just supposed to be a regular Inkling.

the splatoon team has shown us that inklings, like humans, can have a lot of diversity. while our player character models are limited, in-universe its a different story. these are all considered regular inklings. look at the varied eye masks, faces,...they can even have blue skin! So i think that frye is just the splatoon team showing us how more diverse inklings can be.

I made a google drive folder of Inkling hairstyles with a lot of concept art, you can see many diverse examples. To address the other specific points of evidence used:
Long fangs: All Inklings have sharp "teeth"/ beaks. Inkling beak shapes can vary. the last one appears to have a snaggletooth.

Long ears: Ear shapes can vary as well. compare ears of the squid sisters with the player character. Pearl has short ears. hell even the player inkling ears between s2 and s3 are different.

purple fingertips: prior to S3, fingertip coloration was something only seen on octolings, not on inklings. with how her and Shiver can freely change finger tip colors according to their ink, it seems like just a thing inklings and octolings can Do and we just haven't seen much of until now, like how we didn't see much varied hairstyles until s2. Perhaps with how integrated octarian culture is in the splatlands, inklings have caught onto this style as well? Her earrings, the sharp pointy bits in her design: Yes this was used as evidence for the vampire squid thing. That's all eel motifs.
Now the biggest reason she cannot be a vampire squid... vampire squids are NOT squids! They're more closely related to octopuses, but really, they're their own thing (also they're called 'bat octopuses' in japanese... the language the splatoon developers speak. nothing to do with vampires or squids)

With how splatoon's designs have been so far, other species of cephalopods are not guaranteed to look like inklings, especially if not closely related to ink-producing squids and octopuses (and vampire squids are not) Here we have a dumbo octopus (not octoling). also nautiluses. In the case of a species that would be more closely related to the playable species, what seems to be an octoling based on a blue ringed octopus.

Going off this, if the splatoon team were to make a vampire squid character, it most likely wouldn't be a subtle 'inkling/octoling but 2 inches to the left,' For such a unique species, I think they would be pretty explicit about it in the design itself. And considering that they are deepsea creatures that do not produce normal ink, a vampire squid in splatoon might look pretty odd! In conclusion...please stop claiming frye is "supposed to be" or "canonically" a vampire squid, it's a flimsy headcanon based on superficial traits at best and there is zero evidence that was the developer's intent.
(And while I'm here, Pearl is not confirmed a pygmy squid, marie is not confirmed to be a firefly squid, marina is not a webfoot octopus etc. That's fanon based on their japanese names, not canon. As far as we know, the player inklings and inkling idols are all just one species of inkling. inklings and octolings seem to take inspiration from multiple species, but it's not confirmed if they are those species.)

The stars are but mere fireflies to the sun that is the Kojima household tonight. 
Bedecked in bright lights and a thousand and one paper lanterns, the palatial grounds of the property exude a brilliance, the likes of which the guests claim to have never been seen before, their awestruck voices drawing a polite smile from your grandmother (though the pride in her ancient eyes is unmistakable, you note). 
You move your eyes away from your clan matriarch and let them rove over those around you – and their glowing selves – rendered more luminous by their expensive fabrics, sparkling jewels, and gleaming smiles. 
Oh, what a couple of scraps of paper can do to one’s self, you muse silently, glancing at the woman batting her eyelashes at your cousin – the former the same one who was convicted in a hit-and-run case a year or two back, though now, with a Louis Vuitton dress hanging off her frame, no one, except you, perhaps, remembers on seeing her the innocent blood she wiped off her hands, all thanks to her wealth. 
Not wanting to mar this celebratory evening with such dark thoughts, you shift your gaze to tonight’s centre of attention: the older of your two brothers, Takeshi and his fiancée Sara, your lips turning upwards into a small smile on seeing how dazzling they look beside each other – how beautiful, how well-suited, how happy, how… very artificial they look beside each other. 
As artificial as the thousand and one paper lanterns your grandmother’s so proud of. 
As artificial as your guests’ smiles - too-white, too-wide, too-thin. 
As artificial as the compliments you can hear that woman shower upon the wife of the man she was attempting to seduce not too long ago. 
Your smile disappears to give way to a frown, as you take in the falsity around you. 
And a leaden weight lodges itself in your chest, right where your heart should be, when your eyes again meet the sight of your brother and your childhood friend smiling at the photographer – while your ears hear the wails of anguish, the snarls of contempt and the sighs of wistfulness –a cacophony of abandoned dreams and stifled desires emanating from the two souls soon to be joined in holy matrimony, two weeks from today. 
Your mother says marriage is one of, if not the happiest event in a person’s life. 
Oh Mom! If only you could hear what I can now… 
Placing your empty glass of mojito mocktail on the grass near you, you lean back against a tree and close your eyes to soothe the throbbing pain in your temples – one which always happens after you’ve been amid too many people for too long a time, much to your great discomfort. 
Sighing loudly, you move to lie down on the grass when the sounds of an approaching pair of footsteps reach you, soon joined by a boisterous yell of “Aha! There’s the woman of my dreams I’ve been searching for so long!” 
“Hello to you too, Satoru,” You say, turning to the side and propping yourself up on an elbow, your eyes now open. “Didn’t think you would make it to the party.” 
Gojo flops down beside you with an exaggerated pout. 
“Oh, come on, Momo-chan. Think a bit higher of me, will you? Of course, I would make it to the party. My best friend’s brother’s getting engaged today. How on earth could I ever miss it?” 
“And since when have you and Takeshi been on such good terms, hm? That you’re willing to leave your comfortable life at school to attend a party filled with clan elders for an entire evening?” You ask him, an eyebrow raised, unwilling to buy into his rubbish explanation. 
Gojo chuckles. “Oh, it’s not Takeshi I’m here for today,” He says softly, shuffling closer to you until your sides are almost touching, “It’s you.” 
You open your mouth, ready with a snarky reply, when his expression makes you stop – the words you were planning to say, now lost in your throat, as you look at his unusually earnest face. 
“Satoru?” Your voice comes out as a shaky whisper, reasons behind which you cannot fathom for the love of your life. 
(It’s ’cause he’s so close to you, silly! A part of your brain whispers – the same one which had made you call Gojo handsome, out of all the damned things you could say to him – that day you first saw him in his Jujutsu Tech uniform – much to your utter bewilderment and embarrassment.) 
You clear your throat and repeat yourself loudly, “Hey, Satoru?” 
“Hm?” Gojo moves even closer to you when you call his name and places a hand on your cheek, the warmth of it making a wonderful contrast with your cold skin that chilly autumn night. 
“Do-” You hesitate, as an odd (warm? bubbly?) feeling creeps into your chest, but ultimately your concern for the eerie way his eyes seem to shine at you outweighs that weird feeling, and you ask, “Do you have a fever, Satoru? You don’t really look okay there.” 
Gojo blinks, his unusual expression soon overtaken by a stupefied one as you continue to peer up at him, frowning. 
“Satoru,” You shake him gently, after a few seconds of him staring at you. “Hey! Gojo!” 
That seems to shake him out of his stupor, as he quickly removes his hand away from your cheek and scoots away, his face reddening with each passing moment. 
“N-no, no. I’m okay. Totally okay,” He mumbles, “There’s no need to worry. I’m perfectly fine.” 
But you know the white-haired shaman way better than that. 
You sit up and move closer to him and place your palm on his forehead, the other palm on your own forehead. “Now, lie still and let me check your temperature.” 
“Your skin’s warm… But not so warm for you to have a fever,” You say after a while, still frowning down at your friend whose head you have now placed in your lap, “But your face looks awfully red. And your eyes too seem weird. And,” Pausing, you place your hand on the kimono over his heart, remembering a person’s pulse rate is said to speak volumes about their health, and gasp. 
“My goodness, Toru! What the hell happened to you? Your heart is beating really fast! Are you-” 
A finger to your lips stops your outburst, and within the next moment, you find yourself crushed to his chest, his arms holding you in a vice-like grip and his nose muzzling into your hair. 
“Toru, you’re not really okay, are you?” You ask, tilting your head up at him, the slight tremor in your voice inaudible to all except you – and Gojo too, perhaps, judging by the way you notice him smirk a little at you, before it slips into an indecipherable twitch of his lips. 
“No, I’m not okay,” He answers above you, his arms around you tightening a touch. “I’m really, really not okay.” 
You crane your neck upwards to fully look at him and brush the pads of your thumbs over the skin under his eyes. “Then why did you come here tonight, you idiot? You should have stayed back in your dorms and taken rest,” You scold him, concerned eyes sweeping over his appearance. 
Gently removing your hand from his face to intertwine his fingers with yours, Gojo leans closer to your face and whispers, every breath he exhales hitting your face like a little puff of smoke in the cold, “But I couldn’t stay back in my dorms tonight, Momo-chan – Not when I know the medicine to my treatment is here.” 
It takes a while for his words to register themselves in your brain. 
And when they do, you can’t help but let out a small gasp (the same time as that portion of your brain lets out a small squeal in joy). 
“Are you-” You begin but stop yourself from speaking any further, your trust in your oratory skills having plummeted to an all-time low, and choose instead to focus on his electric blue eyes as the slew of nervous mutterings, which had been lost in the background of your mind until now, slowly turns intelligible. 
Was that too much for her? 
Am I going to get rejected? 
Well, shit, she’s going to reject me. 
Oh wait – did she even understand me? 
My Momo-chan can be really dense at times – though she’s cute too then – like really, really cute! 
But no, seriously – was I too roundabout for her? Or should I have confessed to her directly? 
Oh no, she’s looking at me right now. Is she angry? Is she disappointed? Is she horrified? 
Oh no, that’d be the worst – if she’s horrified. 
Calm down, Satoru. Calm down. Take a breath in and think straight. Panicking won’t help you now. 
But I’m too much in love with Momo-chan to even think straight. 
Damn it, damn it, just damn it. 
I should have just listened to Suguru and written her a love letter or something. 
“Love letters are really beautiful, Toru-chan,” Reaching up a hand, you tuck some of his unkempt hair behind his ear – while a giggle erupts from you at the way his face changes from being lovestruck (and not fever-stricken, you realise, relieved) to horrified to the most apprehensive you’ve ever seen him – and you add with a grin, “But this confession is the most beautiful of them all. I love it.” 
Gojo blinks. “So does that mean…” He trails off, an unsure yet hopeful look in his eyes. 
Sliding your hand down to his cheek and keeping it there, you reply, “Yeah, I guess it does mean so, Toru-chan.” 
A moment passes in pin drop silence between the two – the only sounds being the distant chatter of the party and the occasional wind blowing through the trees – before a wide grin breaks out across Gojo’s face, its absolute natural radiance banishing the darkness around you in a way a billion suns could never do – your grandmother’s flimsy paper lanterns or your vain guests’ mountains of gold and gems nothing but tiny specks of dust to the constellation of stars his joy reveals to you. 
And in that instant, as Gojo presses a sweet kiss to your forehead and wraps his arms around you, excitedly describing the new dessert café he discovered on his last mission and the matcha eclairs you just can’t not try – you swear to yourself that you will do anything to keep that blinding beauty of his smile unharmed – even throw away your life, if that’s what it takes.

This is a modern set AU. Since Liyue is based off of China and Inazuma is based off of Japan— they will have brown / black hair. Every character with unrealistic hair color will have blonde / ginger / brown / black / brunette hair. Of course, dyeing is a thing— but not used much.

Oh how they loved you the very moment you stepped inside the school with your [Hair color] hair, and those pretty [Eye color] eyes. How could they not love you? Everybody in this school had their eyes on you and— believe it or not— you were paranoid thinking they didn’t like you. Curse yourself you sweet thing, how could you ever think so when they adored you?
You were a mess though so I understand why you thought nobody really admired you. You do commissions in 3 AM, sending the art piece right off the bat at 4 AM, and then you drink your favorite drink without eating breakfast… You’re… Concerning. But, that didn’t mean they couldn’t love you, because what if those commissioners already died for bothering you without paying in return?
They were scammers, darling, you surely would understand and not think about it too much… Ah, but it seems like you never noticed the commissioner being dead. That’s the loveliest part.
Now, let’s get onto Lumine and Aether— two blonde twins who had recently helped numerous of people, they never were able to get a slack. Every single fucking commission;; was about you. They never knew who you were so, they mostly didn’t care… They had to be obedient unless they wanted the principal Celestia to send their asses kicked out of Teyvat high school. They had to obey… Not like they couldn’t speak Chinese, Japanese and German all in one.
Until that unfortunate day when they did meet you.
❝Oh shit—❞
It was a simple mere curse word, making Lumine and Aether alerted they’ve bumped into someone and did a fast reflex. Aether caught you by the waist while Lumine was behind you with her hands behind your shoulders— balancing you. Their eyes were widened at first, but sighed in relief as Aether’s free arm picked up your phone.
❝Woah there…❞ Aether smirked a little with slight hesitation as he had let you go. ❝Careful where you’re going, sir.❞ Lumine continued with an awkward laughter as the twins stood by one another again and was about to expect you to ask for help needed— until your lips started murmuring out a thank you and started leaving immediately that had them frozen there.
Weren’t you… Going to ask them if they could… Help?
Why did you leave? No, WHY didn’t you ask them for help? Did you not acknowledge them? Did you not have any commissions for them to do? Oh, so weak you looked, so, so, weak.
They could ruin you.
Lumine covered half of her face that was blushing by the very moment you were out of ear-shot, while Aether was just a blushing disaster at this point. Blinking so many times he didn’t understand.
For so long, the twins had to clean up everyone’s mess, having to talk to the person they’ve fallen in love with. They finally understood… Who that person was… There was no doubt the unknown student, was you. They’ve cleaned everyone’s mess and they dared hiding such a pretty boy like you? Bunch of bullshit students if you ask them.
They were going to— No. they ARE going to keep you safe. They wanted to corrupt you. Please, oh pretty please let them hold you. You looked so genuine back there for saying a simple thank you and then just that! You left! How more can you surprise the twins?!
But of course. The twins just had to realize it’s not just them who feels this way. Momently a while ago, they could hear the Fatuis— delinquents— wanting to lock you up in a janitor closet and keep you there until they’ve decided to kidnap you. This makes the twins’ bloods boil, especially when Childe is part of this.
Aether hated Childe and has fought with him beforehand to stop bothering other students, but Lumine’s hatred for Childe was on another level. Even before she noticed you. I wouldn’t want to explain much about how many times Childe almost died because of her— but it’s fine if you didn’t know, right?
If only it was that easy to get rid of someone.
You felt even more paranoid after just meeting the twins… You felt more eyes staring at you, as if you were a mouse trapped in a death trap. Except, this death trap is more gentle, sweetie.
Speaking of which;; Ningguan has memorized your schedule all in one, so you’ll never leave her when she knows you’re free~ ♡ Keqing and Jean would excuse themselves to be “sick” when all they ever want was you to feel pity for them. Any empathy from you will make them feral. You’ve also encountered Albedo many times, who always wants to help you improve your art.
Might I say, you were more comfortable with Albedo since he was your art partner, so you two stuck to one another like glue. And this is why it started Albedo’s possessive behavior… You’re so dumb, stupid, it’s horrendous. But Albedo dared not to say he quite enjoys your stupidity. You didn’t know math? He will teach you. You didn’t know science? Allow him to teach you so. It’s an excuse for him to be closer to you.
Guizhong would especially try making toys for you, y’know, knitting. Always allowing you to get things for free, if it means she could have your soul hugs. She just really adored you, you wouldn’t leave her would you? Of course not.
Nobody wanted you to leave them… Especially Scaramouche, the student who always stalks you. He’s most likely the number one stalker you’ve never had before, it’s bizarre. He’ll follow you EVEN if your parents are driving inside the car with you in it. He will follow.
I may, or may not, safely say that most of these interests have stolen your things. Some have even stolen your pencils you’ve chewed on— and God damnit those costed a lot. But that’s okay~ at least, Pantalone could pay you another one, but that’ll always lead to an argument with Childe who claims to be richer. It never ends well.
Or, maybe if they all stalk you, without each other knowing that all of them were stalking the same darling. In the same day. But that didn’t matter right now, they were watching you wearing your black tank-top and black shorts— eating popcorn as you watched your favorite show/series/movie.
You looked so stunning, so pretty. Fuck. They might just die from looking at you— you’re too pretty that they refused to let your presence be known to other schools. It wasn’t a surprise that they’ve learnt you dated a girl beforehand because she loved you for being pretty— they didn’t blame, but it was a shitty excuse to date someone.
Ah… And how you’re trapped with Sumeru characters. Tighnari asking you to partner up with him, only for Kaveh to snatch you right off the bat. Cyno and Al-Haitham would have more of a brutal fighting than reasoning it out. Yes, Al-Haitham speaks with reasons, but everything’s a mess when it’s you.
Everyone’s at each other’s throats to the point even Celestia fears them. Celestia has to one way or another, expel you. But that won’t happen because a certain blonde and a tanned man will kill Celestia for daring to take you away.

Did a 15+ hour road trip with my fam twice a little ago and I drove a good chunk of it. Used AA/DGS music to keep me awake bc music psych is a blessing sometimes. Anyway, just a roundabout way to say, I have discovered some fun things in the music that made me 👀👀👀 Idk if anyone else has noticed any of it (and I will say I have minimal music theory knowledge but I'm an English major with the tendency to read into symbolism way too much), but feel to keep reading if you're interested! Spoilers for DGS2 are in here, fair warning!
I'll try and include links to the songs when I can! It'll probably be a mix of Spotify and YouTube hyperlinks so bear with me. Fair warning, this is super long because I decided to cram everything in one post oops lmao
The Funky Time Signature
The first thing I really ever noticed was that Sholmes' "Dance of Deduction"s were weird in terms of keeping beat. It's not in common time aka 4/4 aka 8-count; I think it's in 7/8 time (so you count 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 etc. etc.) which is a struggle to maintain counting since people are so used to 3, 4, and 8-counts.

Originally, I thought it was just because he's Weird and Silly™, but I ended up listening to "Partners - The game is afoot" which plays when Sholmes and Yuujin are on the S.S. Grouse trying to deduce where Jigoku is.

This one is surprisingly in 4/4 aka common time (you count 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 etc. etc. [though I have seen sheets put it in 12/8, which is close-ish, but it still has an even counting pattern WHICH IS WHAT MATTERS]). So in actuality, Shomles' Dance of Deductions aren't in a weird time signature because he's our favorite eccentric boy (okay, it might be part that too); it's because he's missing his partner after he left and investigating never felt quite right without him. Once he and Yuujin get to investigate together again, he's whole and happy. And it's just so fucking gay I can't.
Harpsichord
The big thing I noticed while I was driving (because there was nothing else interesting on the road) was the use of harpsichords in certain Londoner themes, specifically Stronghart, van Zieks, Iris, and Kazuma's prosecutor theme, as well as some of the final songs during 2-4&5.
If you don't know, this is what a harpsichord sounds like! Yes, I know I'm a nerd for being able to pick it out and name it while driving lmao
You can hear it a lot in Stronghart's theme, specifically around 0:38-0:49 (it's pretty in the background so you kinda have to strain your ears but it's there), but it's also pretty present throughout his theme.

There's also a lot of it in van Zieks' theme as well; it's right off the bat and it's one of the prominent instruments throughout the piece.
Barok van Zieks - The Reaper of the Bailey
You have to really be listening for it, but it pops up occasionally in Iris' theme as well! You kinda have to strain your ears during 0:16-0:30 to hear it, but it's definitely there. It's more hidden compared to van Zieks'.
Iris Wilson - Young Biographer
I know Kazuma is Japanese, however, since he became a prosecutor in Britain, it still counts and it makes more sense once I tell you why it's all related (if you haven't guessed yet). ANYWAY, his theme also has a lot of harpsichord in it, even in the parts that were from his original theme.

This could all just be a stylistic choice too, but do you see it yet? All the people who correspond with these themes are directly related to the Professor killings. van Zieks and Kazuma have the most prominent because we know by 2-4 the obvious connections they both hold. Iris and Stronghart's are more in the background since both of their involvements are big reveal-type deals by the end of the game.
Bonus points: the actual theme that plays when anything related to the Professor is mentioned also has some background harpsichord to connect it all.
The Professor - A Spectre Revived
I will note that I didn't notice anything in Gregson's theme, even though he played a big part in the false conviction. Courtney Sythe's theme also has some harpsichord, but I can't remember how she's related to it other than the fact that she helped with the autopsy (which probably means I should replay the games again lol).

A Prosecutor, Reborn
Speaking of Kazuma's prosecutor theme, one of the really cool things about its composition is the warring back and forth between itself. It starts with the completely new theme, blending his usual string accompaniment with drums/cymbals, singular bell tolls, and harpsichord. When it gets to around 0:47, you hear the bells and then it switches back to his original theme from Adventures, though it's a lot grander now and lacking a lot of the traditional Japanese elements it once had.

Kazuma Asougi - Samurai on a Mission
And it bounces back and forth like that until the end of the song, the bells signifying the shifting. It goes to show this internal struggle Kazuma is having between finding the truth even if it's something he won't like (his original theme) and following his emotions to falsely convict van Zieks as revenge (the beginning chunk of his prosecutor theme).
I also think it's interesting how dominating the harpsichord is, again especially over the chunks of his original theme from Adventures. In connection to it being related to the Professor, aside from the obvious connection to his father, it also shows how much influence and manipulation Stronghart had over him, with him being the BBEG.
Siblings
One of my favorite things I noticed was Susato and Kazuma's connections through themes, though not the one you're thinking. Kazuma's official theme I'm sure has a few connections to Susato's (but I haven't listened closely enough to hear them), however I really noticed how intertwined the two were when I listened to Kazuma's unused theme they provided in Chronicles.

Many of the same instruments are used, as well as note and chord progressions. They have the same peaceful/serene vibes too, which is understandable in why Kazuma's was scrapped (even if I do like it a lot). But if this ended up being Kazuma's actual theme, I would've noticed the familial relationship they share instead of my initial thoughts of it purely just being professional.
That's all I've really noticed for now, but I'm sure I'll come across more things as I listen to the soundtrack to study. I will, however, shut up now and let you get back with you day/night/whatever time of day it is for you because this is getting l o n g. Good afternoon passengers. This is the pre-boarding announcement for flight 88X to Tokyo. We are now inviting those passengers with small children, and any passengers requiring special assistance, to begin boarding at this time. Please have your boarding pass and identification ready. Regular boarding will begin in approximately ten minutes time. Thank you.
You present your passport and boarding pass to the flight attendant with a quick smile, and start looking for your seat down the narrow corridor. 31A. There it is. You hike up your luggage and settle down in what will be your seat for the next hours. You take out the magazine neatly strapped on the back of the front seat. Perfumes, watches and luxury are tidily presented in hopes to be bought aboard. As you’re looking through the magazine with much fascination, someone starts settling down next to you. You look up and can’t help but hold the stare. A tall guy, in his early 20s, maybe mid 20s? Arms stretching up with grace, he rises his luggage up next to yours. As he closes the compartment door, your eyes meet. A pair of glasses sits neatly on top of his sharp nose. His eyebrows rise up as if he saw something pleasant. You exchange polite nods, and quietly keep yourself busy whilst the plane fills up with passengers. The plane slowly drifts towards the departure runway, and is soon enough at high altitude after a smooth take-off. But when you glance at your neighbour, you realise he might disagree with that last part. Gaping and closing his mouth, it becomes pretty evident that he is not doing a dying fish impression, but is in fact hopelessly trying to unblock his ears. A stifled laugh escapes your mouth and his cheeks turn pink in embarrassment.
‘I always get terrible airplane ear no matter how many times I’ve flied…’ His voice is unexpectedly soft. It is quite charming. 
‘Oh no, it’s too bad I don’t have gum.’ You pause. ‘How about you try pinching your nose and exhale instead?’ You act out the gesture. ‘It usually does the trick for me.’ Your neighbour pinches his nose.
‘Like this?’
‘Yes’ you chuckle at his nasally voice. ‘Don’t exhale too hard though, you could faint.’
‘What?’ he says dramatic and alarmed, nose still pinched.
‘Exhale in one go, just not too hard.’      
Mustering his courage, he exhales sharply. A second passes. You’re inquisitive. He whips his head towards you, and flashes you the purest, most beaming smile. ‘It worked!’
In exchange of your noble help, he grants you his name. Oikawa Tôru. You tell him yours, and his big brown eyes glitter even more, like he is engraving it somewhere in his mind for good. He is visiting his family. You’re surprised to learn that he’s Japanese, but has the Argentinian citizenship with work. You want to inquire what his job is, but he halts you.
‘How about you guess instead? I don’t want to share too much right off the bat. It kills the mystery, you know?’ He is obviously getting comfortable as you talk, but you don’t mind. Rather, you quite enjoy his playfulness. Like a mischievous kitten.
He doesn’t want to share too much about himself, but he does inquire a lot about yourself. You explain to him you’re on a trip to meet a business partner, how it’s your first time going to Sendai, and you conclude that in addition to his outrageous good-looks, he’s also an awfully good listener.
‘Isn’t it difficult for you to travel such long distances for work?’ he asks.
‘Hmm. Not really, I like it. Taking the plane or the train. I can fully enjoy my music, my own company, or a book I’ve been wanting to read but didn’t have time for. And be cut off from the world for a few hours, you know?’
‘Oh I totally understand, I’m the same,’ he smiles apologetically, ‘I hope I’m not impeding on your alone time.’ You could’ve not dismissed the assumption any faster. You tell him you don’t mind the conversation. Not the slightest.
You chat about all sorts of things, from your favourite travel spots to the best type of pastries (you’ve noted that his is definitely milk bread). He mentions his bratty nephew, and how excited he is to see all his family again. Through the happy chatters, the sun has set and the sky is turning a deep shade of blue. The sea of clouds is so beautiful, you urge on Oikawa to take a peak through your window as well. He’s not sure about leaning so much over your seat, but you encourage him so cheerily that he complies. Your hand shields the window so that he can see better and he slowly bends closer. Before you realise, his neck is stretched long and graceful before your face. You feel the heat of his skin radiating on you, and something gently stirs in you. Letting go of the breath you’ve been unnoticedly holding in, you catch a whiff of a sweet, sweet scent. His cologne? Deodorant? Perhaps laundry detergent. You can’t tell, it’s so faint. You’d like to smell it more attentively, but he breaks the silence and affirm ‘It is very pretty, indeed!’ He looks a bit silly admiring the view in his uncomfortable position. He’s trying his best not to accidentally touch you, afraid of making you uneasy. He promptly shifts back into his seat before you can even say anything else. Both suddenly shy from the earlier proximity, the upbeat march of your conversation falls apart, and you eventually go quiet.
You’ve opened one of the books you’ve brought aboard whilst your seatmate has picked a movie to watch. Looks like a romcom. Cute. You read away with your little lamp. Your book this time is a historical fiction based on Greek mythology. The story takes you across sunny islands and green cypress and olive trees. But you catch yourself feeling increasingly drowsy. The fatigue that’s been building up the entire day is finally catching up on you. Your eyelids are heavy, like weighted velvet curtains. Book still clutched in one hand, you drift into a peaceful slumber, having dreams you know you won’t recall. Oikawa notices too that you fell asleep, when you softly meet the plush of his arm. Your head has been gently wobbling around until it found something it could finally lean on. In contrast to your graceful sleep, Oikawa’s in absolute panic. Red in the cheek, a solid minute has passed and he does not know a thing that has happened in his movie. Your hair is tickling him but he can’t do anything about it, too afraid of waking you up and scaring you away, like a cat that leaves your lap as soon as you move. So he just sits very still.
Being sat for so long, and listening to your deep breaths makes him, in his turn, uncontrollably sleepy. It is almost 2AM. He yawns wide, eyes tearing up. He guesses getting some shut-eye would be nice, and soon after taking his glasses off, you’re both sleeping like little babies, head on top of each other. Somehow, you know what’s happening despite being asleep. You can feel the softness of his strands falling on your forehead, his breathing that has synched up with yours, the slow rise and fall of his warm chest. You don’t move away the slightest, and let him rest heavy against you.
6 hours later and you wake up completely disoriented. You have never slept for so long on a plane. As soon as you unglue yourself from your human pillow, said human pillow also wakes up in a startle. You look back at him. You’re both in close to the most ungraceful state one could be in around someone they fancy. Your clothes are wrinkled and full of static, your hair dishevelled, eyes painful to open. And you both stare at each other with the frown of freshly awoke people.
And you laugh.
Oikawa looks down and also lets out an adorable smile. He just might have found his forever nap partner. He’s not one to fall asleep easily, lest next to a cute stranger. And yet here he is, fully recharged and glowing after a good night sleep. The rest of the passengers are still deep in slumber so you just chat through smiling whispers till the plane slowly wakes up.
The plane lands at the crack of dawn. You two are bound by the hip, and if one didn’t know better, they’d think you were traveling together from the get-go. As soon as you step out the plane, you stretch your limbs and enjoy the sweet silent bustle of a morning airport. Oikawa leaves his small luggage next to you and goes on a quick trip to the bathroom. Whilst you’re waiting for him, a flight attendant walks up to you and gently taps on your shoulder. She’s about your age so there’s an unspoken comradery between you. She says all smiles:
'Sorry to bother you, I was on your flight earlier and thought you might like seeing this". She shows you her phone with a picture of Oikawa and you, sleeping together tucked under the blankets. 'I really apologise for taking your photo without your consent but my crew and I thought you guys were so cute and couldn’t help but snap a pic… I’ll delete it if you’re uncomfortable with it!'
You thank her for being so sweet and tell her you’d really like to have the picture, which she promptly shares with you. As she bids you goodbye and a pleasant stay, Oikawa comes back, curious about your interaction. You show him the pic to which he only answers a quiet 'Oh.' But you can see his ears turn pink and he coyly asks you for a copy too. You laugh,
'Only if you buy me breakfast, I missed the catering because you didn’t wake me up!'
'How is that my fault?” he asks bewildered, “I missed the flight’s meal because you didn’t wake me up!'
You two bicker like toddlers, bumping into each other whilst making way to the airport’s Café.
He bought you breakfast.

Kai Chisaki.
His name was well known throughout your neighborhood. He was a Yakuza, the Japanese organized crime unit who operated in the Land of the Rising Sun. His apartment was located conveniently on the corner in your neighborhood, where he often stood with a few of his cronies. The local chapter that he ran was called the Shie Hassaikai, and he was the ringleader.
Kai Chisaki was also a very well known playboy.
The list of girls who had been involved with him was endless. Most of them, girls you had gone to school with, had thrown themselves at him, enthralled by his good looks and bad boy reputation. You often saw a revolving door of girls going into his apartment, always leaving with the same dazed look on their face. While you were out and about, it wasn’t unusual to see him with a different girl on his arm each time as they got dinner or went to catch a movie.
A few of your friends had been involved with him as well, and you had gone out of your way to make sure you didn’t hear a single thing about him. In your mind, he was bad news, and you wanted nothing to do with him. You didn’t care that the local obasans fawned over him, gushing that he was nothing but polite and couldn’t possibly be a Yakuza. It didn’t matter that he was attractive, you had no interest in him whatsoever.
You continued to prove that point, especially after a night out.
It was Friday night, and you were exhausted from another week of work. Your best friend and roommate, Camie, was sitting on the couch, eating some Chinese food when she suddenly jumped up, pointing her finger up to the ceiling.
“Let’s go clubbing tonight!”
You groaned, putting down your carton of black pepper chicken.
“Cami, no, it’s been such a long week.”
“Come on, when was the last time we went out?” she asked, eyes sparkling.
“I don’t know, but I’m sure it was recent,” you sighed.
“We haven’t been out since Inasa’s birthday!”
Shit. It had been a while.
“But we still have to get ready,” you whined.
“Well, finish eating and hop in the shower,” she sang, skipping away towards her room.

“Cheers!”
Camie grinned, clinking her shot glass against yours before tipping it back. You mirrored her action, the tequila burning as it went down. Wincing, you put the glass on the counter before turning back to her. She wore a tight black dress, her boobs holding on for dear life. You wished you had her confidence, as you had settled on a basic white one that hung loosely to your knees.
“See, I told you this would be fun!” she giggled.
“We just got here,” you sighed.
Grabbing your hand, she led you to the dance floor, bouncing to the beat before turning around to face you. She moved smoothly, her hips moving to the music as one hand raised. The tequila had you feeling slightly confident, so you listened to the music and let go. After a while you were having fun, and you told Camie you should get more drinks.
“Oh, great idea!”
The two of you pushed back to the bar, leaning against the counter as you tried to get the bartender’s attention. She pressed her chest against it, pushing up slightly as you swatted at her arm.
“You are so bad.”
You turned to try and wave at the bartender, who was occupied at the other end.
“Do you need some help?”
A deep, cool voice spoke softly in your ear. Startled, you turned your head, only to narrow your eyes at the man beside you. It was none other than Kai Chisaki. He was dressed sharply, a burgundy shirt tucked neatly into a pair of black, form-fitting pants. He was peering at you with steely golden eyes, waiting for your response.
“I’m good, thanks.”
You sharply turned your head away, back towards the bartender. Camie whipped her head towards you, grabbing your hand and squeezing it.
“What are you doing?” she hissed.
She threw her hair over her shoulder, batting her eyelashes seductively at Kai.
“We would greatly appreciate your help.”
Camie had been trying to sleep with Kai for as long as you could remember. As far as you knew, the two had made out drunkenly a few times, but nothing beyond that. You rolled your eyes, waving your hand again and finally getting the bartender’s attention. Upon seeing Kai he froze, bowing his head before rushing over.
“Mr. Chisaki, I apologize for the wait. What can I get you?”
"My usual, as well as the drinks for these two ladies. Anything they order, please put it on my tab.”
Camie’s face lit up, ordering a margarita while you scrunched up your nose.
“I can pay for my own drink, thanks.”
“Don’t be rude,” she yelled.
“Fine,” you rolled your eyes. “I’ll take a Jack and Coke, please.”
The bartender made your drinks quickly, sliding them across the counter. He told Kai to call him if he needed anything else before departing to help other customers. You clinked your drink to Camie’s, looking away as she began chatting Kai up.
“It’s rare to see you out.”
You realized he was talking to you. Raising an eyebrow, you took a long sip before responding.
“Okay.”
He seemed taken aback at how aloof you were responding to him. You figured he expected you to be putty in his hands like the other girls.
“I know you’re here with your friend, but would you like to get out of here?”
Camie’s eyes went wide, taking a sip as she nodded frantically behind his back. She mouthed go get laid to you.
“No thanks, I’m here with my friend.”
Her mouth dropped open, and she mouthed you’re insane.
“Well, she can come along if she would like.”
“No thanks.”
You pushed off the counter, tipping your drink at him.
“This has been fun. I’ve seen the long line of girls coming in and out of your apartment. I don’t want to be another one.”
You grabbed Camie, giving her a warning look before dragging her back to the dance floor. You turned to look at Kai over your shoulder.
“Bye.”

The next morning, you woke up with a pounding headache. The one Jack and Coke quickly turned to three, along with a few shots. Camie had drank even more, and the two of you had somehow managed to stumble home and make it into your respective beds. You groaned, pulling your blanket over your head to hide from the bright sun. Your throat was dry, and you shot your hand out to grab the water bottle on your nightstand.
“Camie,” you croaked out. “Are you alive?”
Through the thin walls, you heard her respond with a groan. After taking a few sips you felt slightly rejuvenated, and you stood to grab some Advil and get ready for the day. You dropped off the Advil to Camie before shuffling into your shared bathroom. While brushing your teeth she knocked on the door, opening it and leaning against the doorframe.
“Coffee. I need coffee.”
The two of you sluggishly got ready before dragging your feet out the door and towards the local coffee shop. As you were nearing the corner, your stomach sank as you realized Kai was standing there, chatting with local members. Upon seeing you two approach he stopped the conversation, shooing them away as he waved. Camie giggled, waving excitedly as she skipped towards him.
So much for being hungover.
“Good morning!” she chirped.
“Good morning,” he replied smoothly. “You two look radiant this morning.”
You rolled your eyes. Camie began a conversation with him, but you noticed his eyes kept flickering over towards you. The three of you began ambling towards the cafe, and you kept your pace slower on purpose so you could keep some distance between you and Kai. He noticed, however, slowing down to include you in the conversation and asking probing questions about you. Just like the night before, you kept your answers short and tried to make it obvious that you wanted nothing to do with him.
The baristas recognized Kai (of course) and asked if he wanted his usual order.
“Yes, please,” he replied. “These two women will be ordering as well. You can put them on my bill.”
“Yes, Mr. Chisaki.”
Camie walked up to the counter to order while you stayed behind. You felt Kai approaching you, and you let out a sigh of annoyance.
“I’m ordering my coffee and leaving,” you said, turning to stare at him with narrowed eyes.
He opened his mouth to speak but you walked off, leaving him behind. Camie took advantage of the opening and picked up the previous conversation, giving you an opening to order your drink and wait before you left.

Monday afternoon after work, you came home to a vase of your favorite flowers. There was a note attached to it, stating they were from Kai.
I hope you had a wonderful start to your week.
Camie sniffed at the flowers, standing up and pouting at you.
“I wish he would send me flowers,” she sighed.
“Well, you can have them.”
“They’re not for me!” she crossed her arms. “Plus, they’re not my favorite flowers.”
Every day that week, you came home to find another bouquet. They all had notes from Kai with different messages. You hadn’t seen him at all surprisingly, and you were hoping you would soon so you could tell him to leave you alone. Thursday night, while you were walking to pick up take out, Kai finally approached you.
“I’ve been looking for you,” you frowned.
“Oh? You have?” A smile slowly began to curl his lips up.
“Yeah, I wanted to tell you to stop sending me flowers.”
The smile was immediately wiped from his face.
“How did you even know what my favorite flowers are?”
He smirked. “I have my ways.”
“Well, tell your ways to back off and leave me alone.”
You dismissed him with a wave, walking off to go get your dinner. When you got home, Camie was holding another bouquet.
“I told him to stop sending me flowers,” you informed her as you placed the food on your dining room table.
“Why would you do that?” she cried, putting the bouquet down and grabbing you by the shoulders.
“Because I’m not interested in him!”
She sighed, shaking her head as she sank into a chair.
“I honestly think you should give him a chance. He’s pursuing you for a reason.”
“Yeah, so I can be another notch in his bedpost.”
Camie rolled her eyes, opening the takeout bag and grabbing her order.
“He’s actually a nice guy. I’ve been getting to know him.”
“You want to sleep with him.”
She shrugged, searching the bag for utensils.
“He’s an attractive guy, sue me. But seriously, the Yakuza stuff is just a facade. He actually has a big heart.”
“Look, can we drop the conversation?”

The next night, the two of you went out clubbing again. This time, you made more of an effort. You wore a black, V neck tank top, the cut so deep it showed off your cleavage and a pair of skin tight, black jeans. The look was finished off with a simple pair of black heels and a few gold bracelets. The various looks given to you by each guy you passed didn’t go unnoticed, and you felt yourself swelling with confidence.
“Maybe you’ll finally get laid tonight!” Camie beamed.
The two of you headed straight to the bar, waving the bartender down. It was the same guy as last time, and he bustled over to take your orders. You had just finished placing your order and was handing him your card when he shook his head.
“Mr. Chisaki has already paid for your drinks.”
You turned to see Kai walking towards you, his eyes taking in your figure. You swallowed nervously, recalling your conversation with Camie the night before. After some convincing, you had decided to give the poor man a chance.
“You look amazing,” he greeted you.
Camie took her drink and disappeared onto the dancefloor, leaving you alone with him. You shifted nervously, grabbing your drink off the counter and sucking in a breath before speaking to him.
“Thank you for the drink,” you began.
Surprise flickered across his face before he nodded.
“Of course,” he replied. “I’m sure you need it after a long week of work.”
“You have no idea,” you murmured, which he replied to with a chuckle.
“Would you like to talk about it?”
You launched into a long vent about your job, and he listened intently the entire time. When you finished your drink, he ordered you another one and led you towards his private section so you could continue your conversation. He asked you about your hobbies outside of work, and it quickly turned into him getting to know you.
“Well, what about you?” you interjected after some time. “You’re learning all about me, but I know nothing about you.”
“I’m sure you’ve heard about me,” he mused.
“Well, yeah, but those are rumors. What if none of those things are real?”
He leaned back in his seat, studying you for a second before nodding slowly.
“The rumors about me being Yakuza are true. I do run the local chapter, and it is called the Shie Hassaikai.”
You stared at him, waiting for him to continue.
“My old man, Pops, was my predecessor. I inherited my position from him. He saved me from a life on the street. In turn, I use my power to do the same for others.”
He sat up straight, resting his elbows on his knees as he leaned closer to you.
“I use my connections to send poor kids to private, good schools. I also keep an eye on them and their families, and I help them out whenever possible.”
Your heart swelled at his kind words, and you began to feel guilty for the prior opinions you had had about him. It turns out he was actually a really nice guy, just like Camie had told you.
“I’ve been looking into opening a community center for these kids to go to. I’m finalizing a few business deals to get it going. Hopefully, we should get a lot or building soon.”
“That is very admirable of you,” you admitted.
He smiled, and you realized he was . . . quite good looking.
“Thank you. That is very kind to hear.”
“I can see why you’re so popular with the local ladies.”
A light flush settled on his cheeks. He looked away, clearing his throat as he rubbed the back of his neck nervously.
“Er, yes, I understand I’ve developed a bit of a reputation as a playboy. I . . . despise it, but I have been with quite a few women.”
“A few is an understatement,” you pointed out.
“Well, if you must know,” he sighed. “The reason I pursued you heavily is because you were the first girl who didn’t throw herself at me. Girls often see me, and use the rumors to chase after me. But you . . . you were the opposite and wanted nothing to do with me.”
He smiled again, cocking his head to the side.
“I guess I like the thrill of the chase.”
It was your turn to flush and look away. You were oddly nervous now, and you felt butterflies in your chest. You took a long sip of your drink before clearing your throat and turning back to him.
“Do you want to go out tomorrow? On a proper date?”
The smile on his face grew wider, and for a moment he had a boyish appearance. He nodded, asking what type of food you liked before you two settled on a time and place.

The next afternoon, you were pacing nervously in your apartment. Camie had gone home with some random guy, which left you alone and panicking as you got ready for your lunch date with Kai. The weather was set to be nice and sunny, and you had settled on a floral sundress and a pair of simple, tan sandals. You had taken the time to curl your hair, brushing it out to create loose, beachy waves. Kai had promised to pick you up at noon sharp, and it was five til.
You were an absolute wreck.
It had been forever since you had been on a date, and now you were dating the neighborhood heartthrob. You two settled on a simple lunch date, but you were still nervous.
When the doorbell rang you jumped, throwing a hand over your heart in an effort to calm you down. Once you were composed you walked over, throwing the door open. Kai was standing there, a bouquet of your favorite flowers in his hand. He held them out towards you, a sheepish smile on his face.
“I hope flowers are okay this time.”
You giggled, taking them from him.
"Of course. Come in, let me put these in a vase.”
He stood politely in the foyer, eyes glancing about as you bustled to quickly put the flowers in water. Once you were done you grabbed your purse, letting him know you were ready as you walked out and locked the door behind you. The cafe you were going to eat at was walking distance, and he made sure to walk close to the sidewalk’s edge as you made the trek down the block.
“Did you wake up alright? I know you had a few drinks last night.”
“I did, thank you. I managed to chug some water before bed.”
The rest of the conversation was light, talking about neighborhood gossip and random topics. Once you arrived, the host led you to a table on the patio, allowing you two to bask in the warm sun. You noticed he was staring at you, resting his chin on his hand as he leaned forward.
“You look beautiful. That dress suits you very well.”
“Thank you,” you replied, flushing.
The waiter arrived then, taking your orders before bustling away. You took that chance to speak, sucking in a deep breath before looking directly into his golden eyes.
“I want to establish some boundaries before we start anything. I really think it’s important that we take things slow. I’m not the type of person to rush into things, especially relationships, so I hope that’s okay with you.”
You expected him to be surprised or annoyed, but instead he nodded, looking at you earnestly before replying.
“I understand and I respect that boundary. I honestly think it would be best if we took things slow.”
The smile from before emerged, the one that reached his eyes and made him look at you as if he was seeing the sun for the first time.
“I want to take as much time as possible to soak you in. I want to get to know every single part of you.”
Your heart swelled at his words, and you returned his smile back to him.
“Deal.”

Review: The Last Airbender Episode 1 - “Aang”
“Long ago, the four nations lived in harm-”
Lol nope. What is it with writers these days fumbling exposition? You had a template, and you botched it.
I nitpicked the heck out of Disney’s Percy Jackson because if you say you’re going to adapt a book, it’s not a very far leap in logic to hope the script might follow said book. But aside from the likes of Twilight, following the source material as it was written never happens.
Netflix had an even easier job. Netflix already had the show they were adapting in a visual medium. Netflix could have gone two ways with this: Shot-for-shot remake just with live action actors, or with an “inspired by” vibe that takes familiar characters, story beats, and themes but tries to make something new with their shameless cash grab.
So, they wanted to take a beloved children’s cartoon and make it gritty and realistic… okay. Sure. No one asked for that and it shouldn’t be embarrassing for any adult to sit down and *gasp* watch a cartoon. For kids.
The original remains amazing, top-tier storytelling, so instead of these reviews stating the obvious “original did X better, why didn’t they do it that way?” we’ll look at the show as if the original didn’t exist… unless it just goes the route of Disney and Amazon and slaps a famous IP on the title screen without making any attempt to stay true to the original just to get butts in seats.
We open 100 years ago in Caldera (renamed generic Capital City) with a pretty decent fight scene and special effects. The choreography is solid, the tone is way darker – and so is the lighting, I had to shut the blinds and turn my laptop brightness all the way up – and it establishes pretty quickly that this is Not Your Kids Cartoon Anymore, even if the fight is bloodless.
*Side note: That no one has a Japanese accent in the Fire Nation is… surprising? I know it’s not actual Japan, I know the original didn’t have any accents, but that they’re going for the whole “gritty realism” vibe and didn’t white-wash the cast, not giving them any accent feels like a bit of a missed opportunity. Just the adults, even. Iroh had an accent in the cartoon.
The costumes are also amazing. The original is still a feat of animation but being able to see all the ornate detail in the costumes, particularly in the Fire Nation, is fantastic. The Water Tribe costumes don’t feel quite so lived-in. The colors are still vibrant, there’s no stains, no wear. They don’t reflect the weariness of a remote village still suffering the effects of a hundred-year-long war. Zuko’s scar doesn’t feel quite as gnarly as it could be, more like a very bad bruise and not the remnants of a 3rd degree burn (but at least it’s not on the wrong side). He still has his entire eyebrow and full visibility.
Sozin is amazing, too. Right off the bat he’s shown as clever, cunning, and violent. The original was limited by Nickelodeon’s censorship, so even though it was a kids’ show and they did amazing still scaring kids without showing the violence (like a graphic depiction of Zuko getting his scar), these are firebenders, and fire burns.
… Though if you’re twelve and watching this expecting a fun adventure, watching a man get burned alive in the first 5 minutes wakes you up right quick. I heard a rumor that they wanted to fill the Game of Thrones vacuum and, yeah, they went for it.
Is there a reason they didn’t lift the original opening narration straight from the old script? It was fine! It’s iconic! This feels like a student cracked open a thesaurus for their essay just to sound smarter. Gran Gran gets to deliver it and that is an... interesting choice.
They did salvage some of the original music, and hearing Aang’s theme and the foreboding horns of the Fire Nation theme redone was ear candy, along with the Sun Warrior chant in the end credits. During Aang’s escape from Zuko’s ship, however, the score sounded uncannily like the battle music from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. 
*Side side note: One nitpick. One little nitpick, I think I’m allowed. Aang cannot fly without his staff. It’s a convenient and logical cap on his abilities and there was no reason to not keep it in.
On the one hand, opening the series with the Air Nomad genocide establishes immediately that the Fire Nation is led by an evil warmonger. On the other hand, slowly weaving in that exposition over the first few episodes, culminating with “The Storm” took what we thought was a lighthearted adventure and made it so much more. That reveal in “The Storm” still makes it one of the best episodes of the show.
Gyatso is perfect. The casting is perfect. “Gritty realism” or not, they did their homework on Gyatso. The only voice actor that left a hole not-quite filled is Iroh’s. He doesn’t quite sound like the wizened old sage, just… a guy. Through no fault of his actor’s, he’s solid, he’s just not quite Iroh.
While the worldbuilding is fine and all the extra additions in the beginning are entertaining… the original cartoon was limited to a cable-bound, 30-minute time slot, with commercials. They did their best to pack as much as they could within that time limit for every episode and you weren’t left wanting. It was also animated and every single frame cost money to draw. Creativity thrives in a box and not having endless Netflix money forced them to do the best with what they had.
With all this room and time to kill on Netflix it loses that tightly-woven polish. Scenes linger and add in dialogue that could have been concise and short. This show marinates, where the original was multitasking in every shot – developing the characters, the world, the story, the lore, the relationships.
In the time it took an entire animated episode, this show front-loaded all the exposition and mysteries to be slowly teased and solved through the first half of the season. We’re not left wondering how Aang survived the Air Nomad massacre. We’re not wondering why he wasn’t there, we’re not wondering who he is and slowly learning him with each episode. Curious now if the “The Storm” episode will even exist.
When Aang takes Sokka and Katara to the Southern Air Temple, neither know exactly what happened beyond that it was bad, and Aang has no clue his people have been destroyed, that it’s been 100 years. This time, the trio and the audience already have that information so the oomph of seeing the aftermath, of seeing Gyatso, doesn’t hit as hard as it should.
The themes, the personalities, the motivations of the characters so far still feel like them, even with all the extra fluff. Aang remains a reluctant chosen one, a twelve-year old with too much responsibility on his shoulders – even if he explicitly ran away after eavesdropping on Gyato’s conversation about sending him away and didn’t just happen to be gone while his home was destroyed.
Everyone except Iroh, which is a shame. He reads less as a “concerned surrogate father figure trying to raise an angsty, bratty, entitled teenager” and more “old man who’s too old for his nephew’s BS so he patronizes instead of showing any genuine support.”
About the only major element that didn’t get the love it deserves is the humor. Aang’s abrupt “will you go penguin sledding with me?” right after he wakes up is just one of many missing lines. Game of Thrones had plenty of funny characters, a show can be gritty *and* funny and he’s still twelve, he’s allowed to be a little cringey and ridiculous.
For a shameless cash grab remake that lost the original writers and took forever to finally air, this is a lot better than I expected it to be. The script isn’t perfect and there’s some lines that aren’t well-executed, but no actor phoned in their performance and visually it looks amazing. The writers did their homework and, so far, even if they refuse to make it a kids’ show, they’re still making Avatar: The Last Airbender.
