Honestly it's so annoying. Half a decade of built up confidence in the way that I look and that I'm appealing and attractive and people want me and it's all torn down in a single phone call and I'm back to getting sick to my stomach seeing thirst traps on tiktok

House is miserable because he is in pain. He is in pain because he believes he needs to be miserable to be a genius. He believes he doesn't deserve to be happy because when he is, his abilities as a doctor worsen and he loses what makes him special.

And he's completely justified in his fears.

He is, at his core, a self centered asshole, and he is constantly forgiven because he is a genius. When he returns from prison in Season 8, Wilson doesn't forgive him until House saves the lungs that are then given to Wilsons patient. Cuddy forgives and puts up with his treatment of his patients because he's a genius who saves them at the end of the day. People who barely know him forgive his actions when they discover how much of a gifted doctor he is.

So why wouldn't he be afraid of losing his genius, when it is constantly the only reason he is forgiven by the people he loves the most? House is stuck in an endless insidious cycle of being proven right that he deserves his pain, and that he would lose all he has left if he's allowed a sliver of happiness.
