"Any Path To Victory Will Do": The Ghestan Storm Legions
In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war. In this galaxy beset by constant blood and battle, hallmarked by hellish conditions and a cold and unrelenting hostility to the very idea of civilization itself, the residents of one world in particular have risen to the challenge, and managed to do more than simply survive: they thrive.
It is not clear when or how the world of Ghestus Prime first came to be colonized by humanity, or if the world was more hospitable when it was. In the Age of Strife, Ghestus Prime became cut off from the rest of humanity by Warp Storms, and any knowledge of how people had come to be there was lost. The planet is a veritable hellscape, a harsh and unforgiving world like no other. The atmosphere has an exceptionally low oxygen content, and is full of gasses that are toxic to humans. Outside the shelter zones, the air is packed with thick radioactive dust by never-ending dust storms that have also significantly dimmed the effective output of Ghestus Prime’s sun, rendering conventional farming impossible. The dim sunlight provides little respite from the cold on Ghestus Prime’s surface, and much of the year is spent in sub-freezing conditions, with the warmest days only crossing into the mid-40’s on the Fahrenheit Scale.
It is this comfort-forsaken world that has given rise to the Ghestan people, a highly resilient civilization of abhumans who have perfectly adapted to rise to their homeworld’s challenges, on societal, technological, and even biological levels. In the dim and the dark of Ghestus Prime’s surface, the Ghestan people became pale, with translucent skin and red eyes giving them a frightening visage. Their bodies have outstanding resilience to radiation and physical damage compared to mainline humans. However, due to their world’s peculiar atmosphere that the Ghestans have adapted to breathe normally, they require environmental masks when traveling off-world to breathe effectively, as a more Earth-like atmosphere has become almost toxic to them. On top of these challenges, the Ghestans had to contend with their world’s own natural disasters, deadly predators, and frequent raids by the Dark Eldar.
The Ghestans had little choice but to meet their challenges head on, and they developed a culture that prizes survival above all, as well as resourcefulness, adaptability, and brutal efficiency. Without the extra resources to enable slower, more democratic or bureaucratic systems, the Ghestans learned to value and cultivate charismatic and iron-willed leaders, favoring powerful and indomitable men of grand vision who by force of will and force of arms could unite the Ghestan people into pursuing common goals, and who would be adaptable in the face of ever-changing conditions. They adopted a strong martial tradition, and passed on to their children their most essential lesson: the wants of the individual are inconsequential when the survival of the whole is on the line. They learned to fight back against their assailants, and on the resource and advantage-starved world of Ghestus Prime, willingly refusing anything that could give your community an edge in the survival stakes simply wasn’t done. As the Ghestan people got better at killing Dark Eldar raiders, they began to salvage the Drukhari’s weapons, vehicles, and other technology, and set their finest minds to work in determining how this technology worked and how to integrate it into their own, all for the glory and survival of the Ghestan people.
The Ghestans have a long and proud history of association with the Imperial military, with the Ghestan Storm Legions only being the most modern incarnation, emerging in the late 38th Millennium. The seeds were planted far earlier, however, during the Great Crusade, when the God Emperor’s forces rediscovered Ghestus Prime, and brought it into compliance. The God Emperor was impressed by the Ghestan people’s will to survive, their courage, and their skill, and so offered them a place in his Imperium of Man. The God Emperor of Mankind was exactly the sort of leader the Ghestans valued, and they enthusiastically took up the banner of his Empire, sending forth professional armies to fight in his name, and to kill for his cause. The Ghestan Army Legions swiftly became famed for their unbreakable determination, their resilience, and their sheer adaptability in the face of harsh conditions, while they became equally feared and maligned for their ruthless pragmatism and cruel battlefield calculus. The Ghestan Army Legions fought alongside the Emperor’s Forces in countless campaigns, burning a trail of blood and glory across the galaxy in the name of the Emperor’s promised utopia to come. During the Great Crusade, they encountered many other Imperial factions, such as the Space Marines of the Adeptus Astartes, the keen minds of the Adeptus Mechanicus, and their fellow soldiers in the Imperial Army, from all walks of life. Some of these factions grew to respect and admire the Ghestan soldiers for their accomplishments and abilities, while others distrusted or despised them outright for their history of integrating Drukhari technology into their own, as well as their callous disregard for civilian lives and those of non-Ghestan soldiers. Of the Space Marines, the Ghestans rapidly came to respect the Iron Warriors the best, as they saw in the Iron Warriors many of the same brutally efficient and calculating values that Ghestan culture instilled in all its children.
The Ghestan Armies were nearly broken during the Horus Heresy, when they were betrayed by one of their own: Lord Brigadier Lareas, who had secretly defected to Chaos. He led the bulk of the Ghestan troops into a trap on the planet of Odraustea, where they were ambushed by the Iron Warriors that they had once respected, along with a host of daemons. Lareas also sabotaged the Ghestan’s communications and supplies, leaving them isolated and vulnerable. The Ghestans fought valiantly, but suffered near-total casualties and losses before they were rescued by a host of Ultramarines. While Lareas’ heresy was exposed, and the Ghestans prosecuted their own brand of justice against the traitor, Lareas’ mission had still been a resounding success: the damage the Ghestans had suffered had been well beyond what was needed to remove their armies from the fight, and the battered survivors fell back to Ghestus Prime to ensure their people’s survival, just as Lareas had planned. The Odraustean Betrayal removed the Ghestan Armies from being an active participant in the Horus Heresy going forward, and the Ghestan people were left deeply shaken by Lareas' Judas-kiss.
The Ghestans are never a civilization to be counted out, however. They have survived and recovered from similar disasters before the Imperium, and the events of the Heresy and the Oudrastean Betrayal proved no different in that regard. Within scant centuries, they were eventually able to recover from the losses of the Heresy, and returned with pride and glory to Imperial service, albeit far more wary and cautious of allies and enemies alike. Their soldiers would face yet more challenges and temptations from the forces of Chaos, who tried to sway them with promises of power, glory, knowledge, and comfort. The new “Ghestan Storm Legions” resisted these temptations by keeping to their promised duty to the Emperor’s cause – a Ghestan promise made is not one to be broken – and remembering their obligations to their own people, and leaning on thousands of years of highly rigorous martial discipline to enforce control of themselves, up and down the chain of command.
On the war-torn world of Viyonlia, the 3rd Storm Legion's 20th Army faced a horde of Khornate cultists and daemons. They were surrounded by bloodshed and carnage, and felt the rage and bloodlust of the Blood God in their veins. They heard his voice in their minds, urging them to kill and slaughter for his glory. He promised them more power and renown if they joined his ranks and renounced their loyalty to the Emperor. The Storm Legions resisted Khorne’s temptation by remembering their duty and discipline, and by using their tactics and strategy to overcome the enemy’s brute force. Fighting with discipline, courage, skill, and a willingness to self-sacrifice for the good of the unit, they managed to break through the enemy lines and reach their objective, where they activated a powerful bomb that destroyed the Khornate forces and their portal to the Warp.
On Tocrides, the 7th Storm Legion's 667th Recon Division were sent to a hidden research facility where they discovered a cache of ancient and forbidden technology. They were fascinated by the devices and machines, and felt the curiosity and ambition of the Changer of Ways in their hearts. They saw his visions in their dreams, showing them the secrets and mysteries of the universe. He offered them more knowledge and wisdom if they joined his schemes and betrayed their comrades. The Storm Legions resisted Tzeentch’s temptation by holding to their pragmatism and caution, and by reminding themselves of the pain and horror suffered by their forefathers during the Horus Heresy on Odraustea as a result of Laraes’ treachery. They reported their findings to their superiors, and subsequently followed their orders to secure the facility. They managed to fend off an attack by Tzeentchian cultists and daemons, who tried to steal the technology and use it for their own ends, and finally, by then thoroughly wary of the visions and dreams they had endured, they ultimately destroyed the facility and its contents rather than bring them home to endanger their people.
During the Plague Wars against Mortarion, several Storm Legions were mobilized, and all were assigned to quarantine zones where they faced endless plagues of Nurgle’s diseases and toxins. They were exposed to decay and rot, and felt the pain and despair of the Plague God in their flesh. They smelled his stench in their nostrils, sapping their strength and willpower. He offered them more protection and comfort if they joined his embrace and accepted his gifts. It is recalled that not one Legion nor soldier fell to Chaos that day: for the Storm Legions resisted Nurgle’s temptation, struggling to the very last with all their famed strength and resilience, and by using their rebreathers and environmentally sealed armor as makeshift HAZMAT suits to withstand the plague. They also relied on each other, deepening fraternal ties between soldiers, with their comradery bolstering morale; through that, the same determination and endurance that had so impressed the God Emperor in the 30th Millennium now vexed the Plague Father in the 42nd. They held the line, and endured, bringing pride and glory to their forefathers, and in the end, it was the Plague Itself that broke before the Guard did.
In late M41, the 66th Storm Legion was infiltrated by a Slaaneshi spy who tried to seduce them with pleasure and pain, for a fallen Ghestan Storm Legion in the service of Slaanesh would be a powerful asset for the Prince of Excess. They were tempted by dreamlike visions full of whirlwind sensations of every stripe and hue, and felt the desire and excess of the Master of Sin in their souls. They heard his laughter in their ears, enticing them to indulge in their fantasies and passions. He offered them more satisfaction and rewards than they could imagine, if they joined his service and renounced their honor. The Legion resisted Slaanesh’s temptation by remembering their duty and purpose, and by using their balance and moderation to control their emotions, remembering that the wants of the individual are insignificant when the survival of the whole was on the line. They exposed the spy’s identity, and managed to capture him before he could carry out his plot, and tortured him for information via sensory deprivation regarding his cult’s activities before killing him quickly, bluntly. and abruptly with no experiences or sensations to savor: exactly the way a Slaaneshite fears most.
Despite the flourishing of the Imperial Cult in the millennia after the Horus Heresy, the Ghestans have, with a small handful of individual exceptions, by and large never bought into the notion of the God Emperor as a literal deity. This is not the result of any great philosophizing on their part, but rather another expression of classical Ghestan pragmatism – they simply believe that on a world as harsh as theirs, one has more practical and immediate problems to solve than fussing over who’s a god and who’s not. Those who have taken up the Imperial Faith are tolerated, so long as their practice remains isolated and does not impede in their day to day duties. Most Ghestans remain staunchly areligious, which has brought them into conflict with factions like the Ecclesiarchy and the Inquisition. Likewise, their willingness to innovate scientifically and technologically, and even incorporate xenotech, has earned them the ire and hatred of the Adeptus Mechanicus, to which the Ghestan Legions have responded with an even more infuriating indifference as they devote themselves ever further to understanding, refining, and maintaining their crafts and sciences, refusing to give up any of their self-sufficiency to such backwards and counterproductive morons as those that make up the Mechanicus.
Outside the Empire, the Ghestans maintain their powerful hatred for the Drukhari, who have caused their people so much suffering over their history. Post Heresy, they also possess a deep-seated hatred of traitors, not only because of their betrayal on Oudrastea, but because Ghestan culture maintains that success is only possible when everyone pulls together towards the same end goal. As a result, in their eyes, Traitors are selfish hypocrites who, now isolated from their original group, cannot build or accomplish anything worthwhile, while also depriving their original community of the means to do the same. More recently, they have come to form a bitter rivalry with the forces of the T’au Empire, with the Ghestans maintaining that the T’au are no more virtuous than themselves, but hypocritically cover up their monstrous nature with constant babbling about “the Greater Good''. This has not stopped the ever-resourceful Ghestans from stealing or otherwise recovering T’au technology to be reverse-engineered and assimilated, recognizing the value in the T’au’s military innovations and actively working to integrate these into their own practices.
To the incredible fury of the Adeptus Mechanicus and great concern of the Inquisition, these efforts to reproduce xenos tech have borne much fruit over the years, and the modern Storm Legions represent the very latest in Ghestan battlefield innovations. Unlike other Imperial Guard Armies, their history of coming from an inhospitable death world has left the Ghestans in a perpetual state of scrappy desperation, and they will not willingly discard tools that could give them an advantage. This has led to them fielding one of the most technologically advanced armies in the Imperium. Of special interest to their engineers is the T’au mastery of energy weapons, though to their great frustration, they have not developed the capacity to recreate this technology yet. In order to conceal what they know others will accuse as heresy, the Ghestans take their time in recreating xenotech, all the better to disguise the process as natural innovation and engineering advancement that has resulted from classic Ghestan resourcefulness, though the Adeptus Mechanicus and the Inquisition strongly suspect the truth, though their efforts to prove such have been hamstrung by the essential nature of the Storm Legions to Roboute Guilliman’s Indomitus Crusade. Guilliman and several other high ranking individuals are aware of the true origins of Ghestan technological advancement, but have made repeated exceptions for the Storm Legions and their people, under the condition that the Ghestans know that the nail that sticks out too far WILL be hammered without mercy, which the Ghestans regard as a fair trade.
It goes without saying that the Ghestans' technologically progressive policies might have been catastrophic for them had the Imperium (and Mars) not had significantly larger concerns almost constantly. The Adeptus Mechanicus has frequently been left frothing at the mouth as a result of interactions with Ghestan elements, with the two societies being more or less entirely anathema to each other, only barely cooperating at all by virtue of their shared duty to the Imperium of Man. Fortunately for them, Ghestan troop divisions remain very much an apple of the Astra Militarum's eye, and they are now regarded as even more favored, elite, and utterly indispensable in the eyes of the Departmento Munitorum after the fall of Cadia. Whatever accusations the Mechanicus may shriek in their direction, no Imperial Commander who is serious about winning has so far been willing to shoot their campaign in the foot by denying themselves of the results assured by Ghestan participation.
Ghestan innovation and reverse-engineering is not restricted purely to weapons and technology, but also has informed their fighting doctrines. Their first hand observation of the effectiveness of Drukhari raids has led to the Storm Legions adopting a doctrine called “Thunderbolt Warfare'', which emphasizes a combined arms force making rapid progression from one objective to the next as quickly and effectively as possible, striking the next objective before or just as news of the previous objective has reached the new lines, giving the enemy no time to prepare an organized defense. Where such efforts have been stymied or simply are not realistic expectations, the Storm Legions reveal their full battlefield powers as their army and vanguard forces meet and combine; the Storm Legions employ mixed unit tactics, special forces detachments, heavy armored divisions, and even possess their own air superiority force, all to shift their battlefield presence and capabilities in real time as the situation demands, making them very hard to pin down. In addition, their insight into xenotech has given them some of the finest infantry armor in the Imperium, falling short of power armor. This superior armor, combined with their natural resilience to serious injury, enables the Storm Legions to directly charge enemy lines, and survive or even shrug off injuries that would incapacitate or even kill normal or less well protected humans.
The Storm Legions, unfortunately, are as harsh and unforgiving as the world they hail from. Those they tend to consider heroes, like their living legend, Radec Redblood – the so-called “Savior of Hive City Aloma”-- are often monsters willing to employ callous, machiavellian, cold-blooded, and inhumane tactics in order to achieve victory. Among the Storm Legions, Radec Redblood is a living legend, a hero of peerless repute, and the troops regard him like a demi-god, but he remains a highly controversial figure outside his Legions for his cold and calculating tactics at the Siege of Palonia. Palonia was a hive world that had the incredible misfortune to also be a Necron Tomb World. When the Tomb activated and the Necrons began slaughtering the populace and compromising the viability of Hive City Aloma, the "Second City" of Palonia, it was the 19th Storm Legions' 5th Army, under the command of Radec, who answered the call for help, but the Alomans may have preferred the Necrons in the end.
A strong initial push by the Fifth was rebutted by a devastating Necron counterattack, ravaging the Fifth by targeting their most effective weapons for killing Necrons, and wiping out over 62% of the Fifth's soldiers and logistics personnel. Refusing to cede an inch of ground and desperate to turn the fight back in the Imperium's favor, Radec forcibly conscripted the remaining population of Hive City Aloma, armed them with substandard weapons, and began his war of attrition, trading civilian lives for the time he needed to be resupplied. The order was met with resistance from the civilian population at first, but Radec's firing squads, who promptly executed thousands of civilian objectors and deserters for heresy, proved to be as fearsome as the enemy Necrons to the Aloman citizens, if not more so. Millions more were mercilessly cut down by Radec's constant orders to send his new militia on suicide runs, which he neither hated or enjoyed, considering it no more or less than the brutal calculus necessary to accomplish his mission. Controversial as they were, the suicide missions met with strategic success, providing enough pressure to pin the Necrons in place while Radec waited for reinforcements and supplies. After several months, these finally arrived, and Radec then gave the order to use his new weapons and professional soldiers to turn the Necron positions into glass, finally eliminating the threat. In the end, his victory came at the cost of 88.3 million civilian lives, which Radec regarded as "acceptable sacrifices to prevent such a critical world from falling into the hands of the enemy", as well as retaining it for the Imperium’s continued use – new workers could always be found.
Radec would later justify his actions to detractors as fulfilling his mission to the letter: he was told to deny Hive City Aloma to the enemy, and if possible, preserve its facilities for further use by the Imperium. Ultimately, as he saw nothing in his orders stating the city needed to be fully inhabited, he only withheld from conscripting the most important and essential workers and laborers who would be the most difficult to replace. Even Lord Salazar Jomenga, the Imperial Governor ruling over the planet, was conscripted and forced to fight and die. When Jomenga tried to flex his nobleman's position, Radec icily replied "Noble blood is cheaper than tin, and even less useful." before handing the high lord a knife and a laspistol and sending him at the enemy. To this day, Radec Redblood, "The Savior Of Hive City Aloma" remains bitterly hated in the city he saved, his name seldom spoken aloud by the survivors, and with clear revulsion when it is. Meanwhile, to his men and at home on Ghestus Prime, Radec is regarded with an almost saintly reputation for his survival and victory against such impossible odds and determined enemies. Radec is hardly an outlier: Ghestan commanders have a well deserved reputation for employing such cruel, inhumane, or otherwise underhanded tactics to win, explained by the Storm Legion wisdom: “There is always a preferred path to victory, but the battlefield doesn’t care, and by battle’s end, any path to victory will do so long as you have the strength to walk it.”
The Ghestan Storm Legions remain some of the Empire’s most driven, talented soldiers, a testament to human tenacity, and in many ways embodying the most core values of the Imperium, though many of their detractors would be loath to admit it. Their people have endured some of the harshest conditions imaginable for over ten thousand years, and far from breaking them, it has only tempered them further at every step. They are a proud people, a pragmatic people, and their soldiers understand that victory only comes to those with the strength and the will to claim it, no matter the cost. Their current status is not precisely known, aside from taking part in some of the most bitter fighting of the Indomitus Crusade. Despite accusations of Heresy by some, the Ghestan Storm Legions remain steadfastly loyal to the Emperor, and his regent, Roboute Guilliman, for a Ghestan promise made is a promise kept. They have faced the temptations of Chaos, and remain unbowed. They have passed through fire and betrayal, and returned all the stronger for it.
As the Storm Legions call to rally on countless battlefields: “Unity brings Strength, Strength brings Victory!”
As long as the Storm Legions carry this certainty in their hearts, Ghestus Prime shall never break, and her soldiers shall never yield. Respect them or despise them as you will, for they care not. They will do what they must, as they have always done. They will fight for survival, for glory, and for the Emperor... and no force within or without the Imperium can stop them.

Can you talk about your thoughts on hinny? I have no problem with people shipping it but to me personally it just doesn't work. It feels like Rowling tried too hard or maybe just wasn't good at writing romance and messed it up. Maybe it was too rushed? The ship doesn't work for me but I'd love to hear your views.
Okay, sorry it took a while to answer this, I actually have a lot of thoughts and I have posts on some of them that I hope to get out soon-ish. I also wanted to go back to the books to make sure I'm not talking out of my ass. But I don't like Hinny, never did. And my reasons are kinda divided into three categories.
Disclaimer: I don't have anything against anyone who ships hinny, it's just really not my thing and I don't see it working with the way I see their characters.
And that's like the core of it. I just don't see Harry and Ginny as compatible on a character level. That and their relationship never really read as believable to me in the books.
The 3 categories I mentioned are:
Harry's character
Firstly, I think Harry is gay. Not bi, but gay. I think he was never actually attracted to a woman and I have a whole post to prove it. So, because that's how I read his character, I just can't really see him with any girl.
(Now, I don't think JKR intended for Harry to come off as gay, but he did)
Secondly, he never thought about Ginny, like, up until book 6, and even during large portions of book 6, he just isn't thinking about Ginny as a potential romantic interest. And when he does think about Ginny in the final two books it never reads like he really likes her. It reads like they decided they are dating, but I don't think Harry knows why he supposedly likes her. He just decided he does, but doesn't know why. It was kind of the same with Cho, where he said he had a crush on her and was nervous around her, but if you asked Harry what he likes about her, his answer would be: "Ehh...."
Like, Harry doesn't really seem to know why he's dating Ginny, and neither do I. It's just how it's written.
2. Ginny's character
So, this is again my opinion, but I don't like Ginny. I just don't like her character. I wish her off the page whenever she talks.
And, when it comes to shipping, for me, I need to find both the characters involved interesting and fun for me to explore to ship them together and care about the pairing. As I don't like Ginny and don't really care for her, I can't really ship her with anyone, not really. It's not even like I hate her (not the way I hate Dumbledore), I just find a lot of her actions and behavior iffy and she annoys me more often than not.
I'm not going to list everything I don't like about Ginny (some of it appears in the rest of this post). But her treatment of Fluer, for example, really soured her character to me. Like, sure, Ginny's young, but, she's 15, and by that point, I think she should take responsibility for being awful to Fluer who was nothing but nice to all of them. Envy is not a good look for Ginny.
3. How they are portrayed together
Like I mentioned in the Harry section, their romance just never really felt there to me. The descriptions were off and left me feeling annoyed at their scenes together more than anything else.
Again, I'm writing a more comprehensive post about it, but the gist of it is that Harry's thoughts about Ginny in books 6 and 7 are weirdly detached for a supposed crush at best or outright uncomfortable for me to read at worst.
Now, we know Harry can describe characters he finds attractive in greater detail. There is none of that detail with Ginny. He only mentioned her hair color and that her hair is long and smells nice. Like, he doesn't talk about her eye color, her facial structure, eye shape (like he does sometimes with characters he does find attractive) — nothing. He doesn't even call her pretty once! At least he referred to Cho Chang as pretty twice in the series.
In the books there is never a scene (not even one) that convinces me they should be together. Like, they have no chemistry. They kinda remind me of Ron and Lavender tbh. They make out and are present in the same space often, but they never talk. Not really. I don't think Ginny actually knows Harry all that well because he never honestly talks to her about anything real. They don't really have chemistry or a relationship, they're just together. At least, that's how I always saw them.
And yes, Harry has his jealousy moments (that are portrayed so weirdly I always narrow my eyes at them to make sure they were actually there, but that's a whole other post about Harry's chest monster of jealousy), but he still doesn't really explain what he finds in Ginny. He doesn't mention she's attractive or pretty at any point, nor does he mention anything he particularly likes about her personality (except that she doesn't weep like Cho and is good at Quidditch. Neither of which are particularly good basis for a relationship).
Like, Ginny mentions why she likes Harry and that she does multiple times. Harry by contrast, just feels so incredibly uninvolved in his own relationship, to me.
Also, personally, I just find the setup of their relationship iffy. Like Ginny outright says she never gave up on Hary and always knew they'd end up together. It means, that since she was 11 (or earlier), she was crushing on Harry, never gave up on her crush, and considered them ending up together fate. QUICK I MUST HAVE CHROBIN FANFIC RECOMMENDATIONS BEFORE I WRITE THEM MYSELF
Oh man, I wish I could ask you follow-up questions in order to curate these recommendations more to your taste LOL. Idk if you are interested in reading chrobin for all Robin genders, if you're only looking for complete fics, if you're comfortable with smut, etc., but in light of my inability to know your preferences, I'm just gonna cast a wide net with my recommendations and let you sort through what appeals most to you from the list. I am also going to resist talking about *what* I love about each of these fics for now or else we will be here all day, but if there are any you would like to hear more about in a follow-up, feel free to lmk. The Laws of Fandom Protect Whiteness.
Disclaimer: I do think that fandom only works if people stick to the Three Laws of Fandom, i.e. SALS, DL;DR, and YKINMK. I am anti-anti and I believe that writing problematic things does not make you problematic in real life. Basically: I'm on your side, fellow fic writers.
But there is a caveat. We have to remember why the Three Laws exist. They are there so that fandom is a safe space for everyone. So it can be a place we all come to and feel respected and heard. But this undoubtedly privileges White people.
The Three Laws of Fandom will inherently protect White people's safety because we don't have to worry about unconscious bias or racist conditioning towards our race or ethnicity. The Three Laws of Fandom do not inherently protect People of Colour because White people in fandom will have forms of racist bias that we have to unlearn. Therefore, the Laws only work if White people choose to be actively anti-racist and listen to POC in the fandom.
Let's expand on this.
This is not saying that writing racism, or writing racially-charged themes, should be censored or off-limits to White people. But when we do write them, we need to remember that the Laws also only work because fandom operates on a comprehensive tagging system. We are able to enforce DL;DR because we have tags showing us exactly what is in the fic. Therefore - don't like age difference? Don't like non-con? Don't like violence? You can opt out!
But if you write racially-charged themes and don't give appropriate content warnings, then you aren't giving POC the chance to opt out. In fact, you are endangering their mental and emotional safety by pulling them into subject matter that has real-world implications for them. And yes, entering fiction always carries a risk of reading something that you don't like - but is far more dangerous for POC than for White people.
It is one thing to accidentally read a fic that depicts a kink you don't like, it is another for a POC to read their own experiences being depicted in a way that makes them out to be no big deal, and not even a big enough deal to be appropriately tagged.
It is also important to note that a POC alerting you to racist themes or passages in your work and asking you to appropriately tag or consider the way you wrote them isn't the same as them flaming you. In fact, it shows care. This person thinks that you are worth their time and effort to try and have a conversation with. If you shut that down and prioritise your right to write anything you want above someone's safety, that is a racist act.
This type of racism results in people like Stitch's Media Mix taking a hard line against the Laws altogether, as they are so regularly used as excuses by White people to justify racism. While I disagree with Stitch's ultimate conclusion, can I blame her for how they got there? The Laws have certainly never been leveraged against me to dismiss my lived experience or concerns, and have only contributed to fandom being a safer space for me. But Stitch is Black and speaks about antiblackness and racism in fandom - and gets barrages of death threats and hate mail for doing so, from fans participating in these spaces.
How are we supposed to tell POC that the Laws keep their spaces safe when they so clearly do not?
On a related note, I think the prioritisation of ✨positivity✨ over any sort of critique or conversation is another mechanism to protect Whiteness. It's important to remember that particularly in slash fandoms, the majority of fans tend to be white queer AFABs or genderqueer people, so the normal structures of patriarchy and heteronormativity that we navigate in our regular lives don't enter into fandom as pervasively. Whiteness, however, is the oppressive structure that tends to persist in slash fandoms, and therefore we need to be cognisant of how this can marginalise and isolate POC fans.
If you avoid difficult, race-based conversations because you only spread "positivity", then you do not actually care about everyone in fandom having a positive experience.
Paraphrasing from 'Conflict is Not Abuse' by Sarah Schulman, conflict isn't inherently bad. It's productive. It shows care. It's growth.
The Laws of Fandom can and should work for everyone. But we are the actual enforcers. We have to recognise the potential ways people can abuse the Laws to marginalise, threaten and isolate POC fans.
People of Colour deserve a seat at the table of fandom. They deserve a safe space. They deserve to feel wanted and seen and respected.
I don't have all the solutions for this - I'm White and recognise that everything I'm saying here I only learned from POC and have probably not said it as well or as eloquently as they have been doing (but no one's listening). I welcome any additions, critiques or insights from POC to this post.
The type of fandom I want to cultivate is safe and inclusive for everyone, and we need to start thinking about what that actually means.

A = Affection (How affectionate are they? How do they show affection?)
Misty is extremely affectionate, almost to a fault. She's extremely touchy-feely and likes holding hands, linking arms, and touching fingers. She craves any kind of physical contact. She's also a true romantic. She’s extremely attentive and intends to care for you till the day either of you dies.
B = Best friend (What would they be like as a best friend? How would the friendship start?)
Well, we've seen her as a best friend and she’s extremely loyal, doing anything to protect or assist her friends, even if it's covering up a murder. She is that ride-or-die friend that will say “Show me the body. I've got a shovel in my trunk”
As for how a friendship would start, that could be for a variety of different reasons. As an adult, you honestly could have run into her anywhere. I think friendship would mostly start if you ran into her regularly, so you become part of her routine in a way and show some kind of interest in her she’ll be gung ho on becoming friends.
C = Cuddles (Do they like to cuddle? How would they cuddle?)
Misty is very touchy, so, of course, she loves to cuddle. I think her favorite way to cuddle would be snuggled under a blanket with you either reading a book or watching a movie on the couch. She loved it when you cuddle up against her shoulder or with her arm around you with you at her side. She also loves pressing against your back with her arms around you in bed as the big spoon so she can hear your heartbeat.
D = Domestic (Do they want to settle down? How are they at cooking and cleaning?)
Oh for sure! Misty seems like the type to have a designated cleaning day for the house and maybe even a chore chart if you lived together. I mean, just look at how tentative she is with cleaning Caligula’s cage. She has to treat her whole house like that. She enjoys domestic life a lot with you, especially cooking together. If you don’t know how she’d love to teach you to cook because it’s one of her greatest loves in life. As long as she has a clean living space,
E = Ending (If they had to break up with their partner, how would they do it?)
It would probably be very confusing. You might not even realize she broke up with you because she’d be so upset about it. She’d talk too fast and not flat-out say that she was breaking up with you, but she would be extremely dramatic about it, which does not understand your comprehension of the situation
F = Fiance(e) (How do they feel about commitment? How quickly would they want to get married?)
She’d be pretty grand go in my opinion, but it’s purely out of her excitement that you like her and she likes you so much! Misty is the type where you gotta gently set firm boundaries with her about going over the top or jumping in too fast because she’s the commitment type and she clings on fast. She craves to be loved and when she gets that affection she wants to hold onto it forever, so marrying you is the logical way to do that, right?
G = Gentle (How gentle are they, both physically and emotionally?)
She does her best to be as gentle as she can. She’d never want anything to hurt you, so of course she wouldn’t do anything to perpetuate that. She learned from her experience crushing on Coach and will hold you close to her chest like a feather if that’s what she needs to do. This can make her overprotective and clingy at times, but she means well
H = Hugs (Do they like hugs? How often do they do it? What are their hugs like?)
She loves hugs! She is the type to wrap you up in her arms and squeeze very tight, swaying you from side to side. She’d hug you all the time if she could, but at the very least once in the morning and once in the evening. She loves hugging you from behind and vice versa. She feels like her heart could explode whenever you initiate a hug with her
I = I love you (How fast do they say the L-word?)
Very quickly. Probably too quickly, but she doesn’t mean any harm. She’s just extremely confident in her feelings and wants them to be known, especially to you because she loves you!
J = Jealousy (How jealous do they get? What do they do when they’re jealous?)
Oh, she’s a jealous girly. She isn’t the sharing type (most of the time). What’s hers is hers and she likes it to stay that way. She becomes snippy when she’s jealous and often gives the cold shoulder, but she’s not upset with you. Jealousy is more something that damages her pride over her trust in you. However, if you purposely played into whatever is making her jealous she might shatter
K = Kisses (What are their kisses like? Where do they like to kiss you? Where do they like to be kissed?)
Misty has a wide very variety of kisses in her arsenal. One of her favorites has to be the sneaky peck on the cheek when you aren’t paying attention or her classic barrage of kisses all over your face. She just lives to kiss you all over, just like how she loves hugging you all the time!
However, when things get particularly steamy, she’s nice, gentle, and slow till she isn’t. She's the type to playfully bite your lip and giggle about it due to how proud of herself she is. She also loves taking deep inhales when she kisses your neck just to breathe in as much of you as she can at once.
L = Little ones (How are they around children?)
Misty is a little shaky around kids, but she tries her best. She doesn’t exactly know how she should interact and what she should say, but if you’re good with kids she’ll learn quickly by copying you, and then eventually she’ll get the hang of it. At last, she hopes she does
M = Morning (How are mornings spent with them?)
Misty is quite clingy in the morning especially. She doesn’t like it when you leave bed before her or when she has to leave you. If you asked her when she was waking up, she would 100% be your human backpack throughout your day. She just loves the feeling of you tangled in her and the sheets with the sun shining in through the windows over you and her together
N = Night (How are nights spent with them?)
She loves coming home to make dinner with you in the kitchen, sharing gentle silent touches as you pass one another while cooking only to eat what you prepared together. She’ll offer to do the dishes but you’ll ultimately do them together before settling in to cuddle on the couch to watch tv before bed.
O = Open (When would they start revealing things about themselves? Do they say everything all at once or wait a while to reveal things slowly?)
Misty’s an open book about most things. Nearly every card in her hand is on the table, splayed out clearly for you to see and read, but some things she keeps to her chest, which isn’t something you should mind. Maybe she’ll tell you one day or maybe she won't. Only time can tell
P = Patience (How easily angered are they?)
She’s quite patient with you, but she can have a temper with other things. She’s quicker to sadness or frustration than she is to anger
Q = Quizzes (How much would they remember about you? Do they remember every little detail you mention in passing or do they kind of forget everything?)
Misty is an encyclopedia when it comes to you. It’s like she has a special filing cabinet with your name on it in her brain that’s labeled from A through Z with everything you’ve ever told her, but she tries not to let you know that
R = Remember (What is their favorite moment in your relationship?)
Probably when you told her you loved her. Even though she said it quite quickly, you likely took some time, which was ok, but the moment you told her she felt like her whole world was finally perfect and complete. She might bring up that marriage thing (possibly again if she’d mentioned it before) but that's a longer conversation to revisit later
S = Security (How protective are they? How would they protect you? How would they like to be protected?)
She might not look it, but Misty is quite the protector. She’s not above petty revenge or just revenge in general. She's loyal sometimes to a fault and makes sure those she cares for are treated right.
But while she’s quite the protector, she’d feel so spoiled if you protected her back. It’s not something she get’s very often and the action might just turn her too much
T = Try (How much effort would they put into dates, anniversaries, gifts, and everyday tasks?)
Misty is the queen of extravagance. Go big or go home is her motto, but that can get quite overwhelming for some. While she loves grande gestures, you might be more of the type to stay in for a quiet night and she can do that too! Any time with you is enough for her, no matter how big or how small. Though she might still throw in her grand gestures sometimes
U = Ugly (What would be some bad habits of theirs?)
She can be a lot sometimes, which is hard for her to hear because she’s a pretty heavy perfectionist. Hearing she’s not doing something right makes her feel like she’s completely failed. She can all or nothing sometimes, but she knows she’s gotta work on it
V = Vanity (How concerned are they with their looks?)
She’s very concerned with her hair every day, but on special occasions, she will spend far too much time obsessing in her mirror about every minor detail of her face.
W = Whole (Would they feel incomplete without you?)
Yes, she would. She enjoys phone when you’re apart just to check in and make sure you’re alright and hear how your day has been, but she does her very best to still give you the space you need
X = Xtra (A random headcanon for them.)
Her love languages are physical touch and acts of service, 100%.

She doesn’t like negative nellies. Or at the very least, she’ll try her best to get people to look on the bright side of things. She’s a fixer, which is hard sometimes, but she's confident she’s got it all under control

She likes listening to your heartbeat when you’re sleeping beside each other and taking in the smell of your skin. She also pokes her toes out of the covers almost every night, no matter the temperature. She says its because she likes the feeling of the air

Hello!! I will sure do my best, though unfortunately the archives of my mind are not what they once were. I have a long masterpost of recs, which I will update once I've posted this rec as well, but lemme think.
I'll disclaim off the bat that many of the super popular longfics in this fandom are not exactly my cup of tea, and I also haven't read a lot of the newer stuff, so the recs you will get from others don't necessarily match up to the ones you'll get from me. That said, I know @tathrin is actively writing right now and their writing is fantastic, so I feel comfortable reccing their longfic without having read it!
As far as classics: one fandom classic is Adina's Back to the Beginning series, a universe where Gimli is reincarnated over and over again in a gift from Mahal, and @daisyfornost's response Aulë's Gift. These two combined get you to almost 100k and there is sex!
I want to rec two fics by Angela on AO3, From Forest to Sea, which is a short vignette series with some of the most gorgeous writing ever, and The Undying, which is HEARTBREAKING and I do truly have to warn you that it might hurt you a LOT.
A medium-sized fic with no sex, but one that I believe is a classic EVERYONE should read, is On The Cold Hill Side by marycrawford. Pining, lush sensory detail, and it manages to be slow burn despite not taking all that much time, counted in hours/days.
For some very good smut, I'd recommend Unwilling and Travelling Bodies by lordnelson100, as well as a lot of @katajainen's writing, and @deheerkonijn's. Actually read any of their writing! Also anything by @enide-s-dear if you want to cackle. @the-dwelf-ao3 has a range of fic lengths and I recommend all of their work as well.
This is not as comprehensive a list as I could have once given you, and for that I am sorry! But these are still some standouts, and I hope you find them a good place to start and dive deeper - and have fun with the fandom!

An Analysis of Two Different (Yet Complementary) Endings: UBW in the VN and the Anime; and What They Mean
So I recently finished my re-watch of Ufotable’s unjustly maligned 2014-15 adaptation of Fate/stay night’s Unlimited Blade Works route; I thoroughly enjoyed myself, which wasn’t shocking at all—Rin/Shirou is only my favourite fictional relationship (not just romantic, but any kind of relationship). It did however induce to more thoroughly and exhaustively compare the anime original conclusion to the two’s story with the original ending as presented in the VN, if only because I suspect that a careful reading of the nuances of the characterization of both will yield some very fruitful results. It might seem a bit paradoxical at first, but I’ve come to find these two scenes while seen incredibly fondly by most Shirin shippers are in fact quite underappreciated—because there’s just so brilliant and intricate in the subtle ways in which they manage to weave in so much depth and substance into exceedingly simple and seemingly plain plot developments. They are insanely thematically rich, and people often are left far too dazzled and enchanted by the magic of the superficial writing that they miss the genius hidden beneath the surface.
We’ll start off with the comparatively simpler part of the analysis: the original conclusion to Rin and Shirou’s story.
The Ending in the VN
For the purposes of this analysis, I will be skipping all of the epilogue sans the final classroom scene; the reasoning is quite straightforward and should be readily obvious—most of what is of relevance to this analysis is basically confined solely to Rin and Shirou’s final conversation. This disclaimer might appear to be superfluous to some, but I decided to include solely due to my recognizing an asymmetry in the structure that I chose to employ herein—because the section posterior to this one will have to deal with comprehensively picking apart the entirety of episode 25 of the anime. There was a distinct possibility some readers might find the decision somewhat puzzling, so I think it would be no great harm to tell people what precisely they are getting into, though I consider the content itself will be perfectly sufficient in providing people with an understanding of the thought process behind it. So without further ado, let’s finally begin.
The crux of the conversation between Rin and Shirou that caps off UBW is her invitation to him to tag along with her to London as she goes to continue her training in becoming a proper magus—and Shirou’s reaction to her doing so. I will now post all of Shirou’s key internal monologues relating to the matter during his initial contemplation of the matter, omitting all of Rin’s elaborative comment interspersed throughout Shirou’s thoughts for comedic effect, in order to allow us to better understand what precisely the story is trying to communicate here.
She speaks casually, but I'm sure it's an amazing thing.
…But London, huh? …That's certainly too far away.
My father wasn't in the Magic Association. I'm just like him, and I don't like formal stuff.
[...]
…But I might be able to move there.
I can start working more, study English, save up traveling and living expenses, and find a job over there…
[...]
No, no, let's say I am able to rent an apartment there.
I don't know what kind of a place the Clock Tower is, but I'm sure Tohsaka will get even busier. …Then it should be better for me to go there after I become a proper magus by myself.
Yeah, that sounds good.
First of all, London isn't suited for me. I bet I'll faint if I go there and if it's filled with people like Kotomine———
It is at this point that Rin finally notices Shirou has wandered off in his thoughts and thus not paying attention to her—subsequently presenting what amounts to an ultimatum to him. But before we go into that, let us more carefully and studiously parse what we have been presented with here: a dialectic. A dialectic meant to represent Shirou’s inner conflict—an exceedingly minor and trifling conflict, no doubt!—between his ideological aversion and distaste for formal magecraft and the sorts of individuals drawn to it, and his curious desire to nonetheless follow Rin wherever she goes. For literary effect, the text chooses not to immediately explicitly reveal what might be behind this willingness to nonetheless move to London despite his misgiving, but anyone who has been paying even the tiniest bit of attention can easily deduce what might be the cause. Nevertheless, the story firmly establishes a key piece of information going forward—Shirou is not fond of the Mage’s Association. He would certainly not choose to associate himself with them of his own volition.
But now that we have the set-up, we are almost immediately greeted with the pay-off—the previously posted CG of Rin’s brilliant visage in an adorable hunched over position and adorned with a radiant, loving smile, accompanied by the following text:
"So, what will you do, Shirou?"
She asks me gently, with eyes that see through me.
"——————"
My face turns red.
Her words and expression blow away my humility and my dislike of the Magic Association.
…This is what I mean by Tohsaka holding my weakness.
I can't help it if I fell in love with her.
“Oh, why go silent now? I haven’t heard your answer yet.“
She keeps smiling mischievously.
She knows what my answer is, but she's mercilessly attacking me.
"Uh… I, um…"
To be honest, London is too far away, but I can't imagine myself being taught by anyone other than Tohsaka.
And I never even thought about parting with her.
Most of all, I want to be with Tohsaka.
"Be clear, this is important.
Will you still come with me, even if it's as my assistant?"
She looks up into my eyes.
She looks so attractive that I feel like my heart will pop out of my mouth.
"S-Shut up, you idiot…! You idiot, idiot, idiot! I-I-If it's so important, tell me about it in a more appropriate place! I can't answer you when it's so sudden…!!!"
I don’t know what’ll happen to me if I keep staring at her, so I look away. ...I still feel Tohsaka’s presence.
She’s happily watching my reaction.
"Hey, Shirou. What's your answer?"
She murmurs gently.
………She's got me beat.
Is it this hard to nod and reply honestly?
"………"
But I can't turn around unless I say it to her.
"……You idiot. Don't ask me such an obvious question."
I meet Tohsaka's gaze and tell her my honest opinion.
Her smile broadens at those words.
“And I never even thought about parting with her. Most of all, I want to be with Tohsaka.” That’s the key portion here. The internal tug of war between Shirou’s deep-seated hatred for the common amoral magi and the stifling environment of Clock Tower on the one hand, and his unbridled love for and admiration of Rin is decisively and unquestionably resolved in Rin’s favour. It was barely even a contest. Returning to previously discussed dialectic, it is noteworthy how Shirou considers moving to London at a later time than Rin so that he wouldn’t represent a burden for a Rin less likely to be able to spend precious time with him. Hell—the guy already starts making plans about how he’s going to move there without her even inviting him or expressing that she wants him to go with her! He’s so lovestruck that the mere mention of her moving to London has his immediately making preparations so that he can be with her. It’s odd to think that Shirou could possibly find some way to work more than he already does, but that’s not stopping him. Shirou’s internal back and forth weighing his options, contrasting his reservations towards moving to London with his obvious preparedness to go there for Rin’s sake, is presented as barely even really being a proper conflict; the outcome was determined from the very start. There was simply no other way this could have been resolved—Shirou wants to be with his Tohsaka.
But why is this the conclusion to UBW? Why precisely was it so important to finish the route like this, with this particular scenario, with this particular character dynamic? It might seem like this is just the logical conclusion to how the story should be: it’s hardly in-character for Rin, someone who is portrayed as someone who loves magecraft and finds it fun, to not eventually go to Clock Tower, given that one of the themes of the route is her and Shirou’s learning to walk their chosen path out of their own love for it and on their own terms; it also helps reaffirm Shirou’s love for her. But how exactly does this help cap off Shirou’s character arc? How does this serve as a fitting conclusion to his character arc taken in its entirety, including his conflict with Archer? The essential element here is Shirou’s invocation of Kiritsugu, prefacing the rest of his comments elaborating on his opposition to the Association; Shirou’s refusal to move to London is symbolically associated with his ideal. The core question of UBW of course is “Will or will not Shirou become just like Archer?” He is after all walking on the same path, headed to the same direction. What makes him so different? This scene is meant to answer that: his love for Rin. The entire scenario is a microcosm of Rin and Shirou’s relationship, showing why he won’t become Archer: he loves Rin more than he wants to pursue his ideal. Of course Shirou wants to become a superhero—but he wants to be with Rin even more. Shirou will always treasure the precious time he spends with Rin far more than he does his adventuring. Whatever corner of the world he may be in, whatever conflict is afoot, no matter how faraway he may be—he will always find his way back home, the place where he truly belongs: with Rin. The girl who loves him, and whom he loves back.
And I really cannot think of a more fitting poem to end that scene than...
The Ending in the Anime
In episode 25 of the 2014 UBW TV anime adaptation by Ufotable, we finally get to see Rin and Shirou’s life together in London.
It makes for incredible fanservice, to say the least.
He’s giving her a headpat—SHE’S SLEEPING ON HIS SHOULDER!!! Thanks for humouring my pic dump; now, onto the analysis.
Within the confines of the anime, the classroom conversation between Rin and Shirou is quite heavily abridged, positioned very deliberately so that it may be carefully instrumentalized for the specific narrative purposes of the broader narrative of the London epilogue it is situated in. It is in short repurposed. We will have to return to the specifics of that later. For now, let’s begin analyzing how the narrative unfolds.
The epilogue has a three act structure, divided over three in-universe days. The first day acts as the set-up; the second day as the elaboration; and the final day provides us with the conclusion. Now, the first day is mostly fanservice, and this is not without reason: while it lays the foundation for Shirou’s inner conflict that we see unfold over the next two days, it is a mostly laidback story that simply invites us to enjoy Rin and Shirou’s nearly idyllic life in London. It’s a way to frontload almost all of the pure, unadulterated fanservice so as to allow for more narratively relevant elements to be positioned at the very end, which is precision-focused to delivering a fitting conclusion to Emiya Shirou’s arc—which isn’t to say that the latter portions of the story lack fanservice, or that the frontloaded fanservice has no purpose whatsoever; rather, the later fanservice simply has more thematic depth to it. The early fanservice meanwhile serves mostly to establish what Rin and Shirou’s life in London is like; it’s purpose is to establish what is at stake. Many have lamented that Ufotable cut a lot of the elements which were included in Nasu’s original script (most likely rejected due to the Ufotable animation staff’s qualms with having to do another exhausting 45 min episode), but ultimately it was for the better in my estimation; it resulted in far more focus. Instead of wasting time on the total mediocrity of a character that is Luvia, the existing story utilizes her wisely for a specific purpose—to establish just how much Rin has changed over the narrative. I mean, the girl went from freaking out at the suggestion she might be fond of a certain redhead to being so openly enamoured with him that’s she willing to throw down with other girls for flirting with him! The idealized portrayal of Shirou’s new idealized life with the girl he loves is interspersed with discussion of his receiving an invitation to join the Association—and the implications of that. The day ends with Shirou’s mentioning that his heart lies elsewhere; in his pursuit of the ideal.
The next day is fairly laidback as well, but also a bit more... contemplative. Rin and Shirou’s ruminations on the Holy Grail War and what they learned from it during their visit to Glastonbury aren’t exactly directly connected to the central conflict of the narrative, but they nevertheless help portray just how much more mature these characters have gotten, how much they have changed since the events of HGW. It’s important to have Rin portrayed in a much more serious light; after all, the beginning of the episode had her used as comedic relief. Yes, it’s a perfectly fine way to establish just how much Rin truly loves Shirou, but the conclusion to the episode ultimately relies on her being both loving and mature; she’s always been the more intelligent, level-headed and wise of the two, so it stands to reason that it would be quite prudent remind the audience of that as it becomes important once again. Once more, we are treated to a dialectic; the hopelessly in love Rin of the first day meets her antithesis in the wise, contemplative Rin of the second day, ultimately resulting in the synthesis we encounter in the final resolution to the narrative. Having Rin portrayed as being both more mature yet also more fun than Shirou also reinforces just how much more at ease she is at Clock Tower than he is.
On the ride back home, Shirou has a flashback. And we suddenly find ourselves back in Fuyuki, two years prior.
Cute.
Anyway, we return to our repurposed classroom scene.
What exactly is the goal of this scene? Shirou’s monologues, so crucial to the scene in the VN, are wholly excised. We can see Shirou’s blushing like crazy (I can’t blame him...), but we are otherwise left clueless as to his considerations whether or not to follow Rin to London. The thematic relevance of the scene in the VN is gone; no-one, going based solely on the anime, could possibly have realized that this particular scene was meant to be a microcosm of their relationship, showing my Shirou will not become Archer. If anything, it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to say that the scene is just there to fill in the gaps about what happened in the immediate aftermath of the events of Fifth HGW and act as more Rin/Shirou fanservice. It’s the final episode, so why not just give your audience diabetes ten times over? Just look at it!
God, I’m really sorry if this many images bothers anyone—but I just can’t help it, it’s too cute and amazing.
But yeah... good fanservice. Doesn’t necessarily mean there’s anything thematically relevant or important to the characterization our heroes receive, right?
Well...
This... is what the episode is all about.
Shirou doesn’t want to betray Rin.
“Thanks for bringing me with you.“ Shirou is profoundly grateful to Rin for giving him this wonderful opportunity to be with her and spend time with her. He is so very happy to be able to cherish his time with the girl that he loves... but he can’t stay at Clock Tower. Rin is the only reason that he is happy there. He feels uncomfortable with the subject of his future there, too afraid to openly and honestly express his feelings to Rin, because he doesn’t want to break her heart. For all that Shirou has matured, he is still just a young man trying to find his place in the world, confused and scared; scared that he might have to abandon the girl he loves so dearly—scared of what she might say. He doesn’t want to spit all over her effort and hard work, all that she has ever done for him; fundamentally, Shirou’s conflict in this episode is about Rin. It’s about his struggling with the difficulties of maintaining the relationship that he has built with her, and his fears that it might not last. His fears that Rin wouldn’t understand what he’s going through, and reject him for it. And that in doing so... his fate will as Archer will be sealed.
But that’s not what happens. When he is finally forced to explain himself to her, he is surprised to hear that she isn’t mad at all. No, she’s wholly supportive of him! Encouraging, even! In fact... she’s the one reassuring him. Earlier in the narrative, Rin was Shirou’s foil as the down to the earth realist to his wide-eyed, idealism. Rin was the one with the self-esteem issues; Shirou was the one who kept charging at the impossible without a doubt in his mind about his chances of success. The confession was all about Shirou’s providing Rin with the necessary support to get back up due to his holding her in a higher regard than she did herself; to Shirou, she was always the amazing, incredible girl who never quits despite all the things weighing on her back. And now, in a beautiful symmetry... it’s her, the girl who didn’t think she had it in her to strive for the impossible, giving encouragement to him, the boy who never did quit, who now has doubts about his future... to never quit. Because she believes in him, just like he believed in her.
People tend to grievously misunderstand what Rin says in this episode—it’s responsible for like 90% of the stupid takes on this episode and the future of the Rin/Shirou pair. She never claims that she will always follow Shirou around; she quite openly states that she eventually wishes to settle down at Clock Tower, because pursuing magecraft is fun, it’s her dream, and it makes her happy. She just doesn’t think that is necessarily incompatible with her being with Shirou. Just like Shirou had made a temporary sacrifice coming to London to spend time with her, so too will Rin now make a slight detour from her path to accomplishing her dream to support the most precious person in her life. It’s why I find it somewhat regrettable that Shirou’s monologues were removed from the classroom scene; it would have been nice to have it be readily apparent within the show itself without recourse to the VN that there’s a symmetry between Shirou’s going to London with Rin and Rin’s going on adventures with Shirou. I understand the omission, given the excellent execution, but it was nonetheless an imperfection solution; perhaps the only one there was. But I can still lament, can’t I?
Rin and Shirou’s relationship is going to face a lot of issues. It’s not going to be easy. A clash of wants is inevitable. But Rin is willing to make it work. She is going to make it work. For both of their sakes. The beauty of Rin and Shirou’s relationship is in its striving towards an ideal; it can never be perfect, but it still comes close to being so. Its imperfections make it more than perfect. Theirs is a relationship just like any other—filled with ups and downs. The proof of their love is not in the absence of problems, but in their having the patience, understanding and mutual respect to overcome them, together. Many people when praising the Shirin pair like to adduce its being the most “realistic” of the three VN relationships in its favour. I think such people are doing it a massive disservice by doing so. Shirin is wonderful because it’s a highly idealized version of a normal relationship. Just look at the episode! Their love story is a like a fairy tale! The entire story is about Rin and Shirou, partners in crime; just the two of them against the whole world. Falling love in the midst of a conflict filled with strange mystic mages and legendary heroes from the past. And yet... it feels so down to earth. It feels like something that could occur in your own neighbourhood. What makes me love it so much is this careful but amazing balance between reality and fantasy; it’s just the story of a boy and a girl falling in love... but it feels like a grand epic. Both of them are strange and downright weird people... yet they are also just two regular teenagers, doing regular teenage things. Two regular people, stuck in extraordinary circumstances where they don’t belong... and making the best of it. Together. And nothing exemplifies that more for me that this one final scene at the end of episode 25, perfectly encapsulating why they are so great.
Many people lament the absence of more physical affection between Rin and Shirou, in both the VN and the anime. I sympathize with such people; I myself wish we had gotten many more hugs, kisses and cuddling than we did. And yet... I feel as though in decrying what is not there, they fail to appreciate what was there. Because frankly, few things have made me as emotional as this one handshake.

Personal Appeal of Dramione
Since reading comprehension among some HP fans is lacking, let me reiterate with some disclaimers:
I do not ship Dramione.
I do not like Dramione, especially as it is portrayed in fanworks.
I do not think Hermione should be with Draco because I dislike Romione. Unfortunately, Romione is the best ship for Hermione...Ron could have done better though.
If anyone makes any comments about the previous points, it is proof they did not read my post properly. Sick and tired of pro Romione people asking how I can ship Hermione with her bully when I merely bring up anti-Dramione arguments I observed.
Anyway, I keep seeing some common arguments for people's disdain for Dramione. I agree wholeheartedly with most of them. The Ron bashing in Dramione fics is 100% out of control and I find it laughable that someone will say Ron is toxic but then say Draco is better. I love Draco but I live in reality (plus I would never pair my baby with a girl like Hermione). Maybe Draco has the POTENTIAL to be better in a well-crafted AU but the canon as it stands does not support this. I have commented that even the enemy part of the enemies-to-lovers ship for Dramione is boring and lacklustre compared to Drarry. Despite all of this, a part of me does find Dramione as an appealing concept and I think some Dramione antis are deliberately being obtuse when wondering why Dramione is popular. I want to write my own response to some sentiments I have seen:
If you want an enemies-to-lovers ship, Romione is right there.
I hardly consider Romione an enemies to lovers ship. Can you even consider them enemies at the start? Ron didn't like Hermione because her personality rubbed him the wrong way. He made a few deriding comments about her that led to her crying. Hermione acted naggy and intellectually superior and maybe she saw Ron as a bit of a delinquent? YAWN! What enemies! Technically they fit the definition of the ship trope but in the tamest way possible. As far as I am concerned, the emphasis was more on their friendship (they are friends for basically most of the series) and their initial dislike was a minor hiccup. They were 'enemies' for like 5 chapters in one book and the switch from enemies to friends was lightning quick - like one sentence quick.
But from that moment on, Hermione Granger became their
friend.
I think Romione is better suited as friends to lovers but that's just my take. Just look at Sukka from ATLA. Sokka and Suki started off on a rough note but you would not call them enemies to lovers. Most of Romione's 'enemy' moments boil down to Ron and Hermione being teenagers and going through normal, hormonal teenage drama.
Compare this to Dramione. Draco scorns Hermione's very being and Hermione dislikes him before even having dialogue with him. They are on opposing sides from the beginning: opposing houses, opposing sides of the war, opposing values and ideologies etc. And it would have been interesting to see how that disgust and conflicting worldviews could have morphed into respect and love.
Draco already has a redeeming love interest. You don't need Dramione when you have Drastoria.
Drastoria is a decent ship but I don't like it for a few reasons. First of all, Astoria is a character I know almost nothing about. If I want to know about her, I have to search Google. She and Draco have hardly any interesting history shown. She's basically a NPC - a blank slate. Maybe Cursed Child fans would like Drastoria more.
Secondly, while it is admirable that Draco married a sickly, blood-traitor girl who might not have been able to give him heirs, at the end of the day she is still a pureblood. She's still a relatively safe option. Marrying a muggleborne person like Hermione would make a way more concrete redemption/atonement story. Hermione challenges Draco's worldview more than Astoria ever could.
On Hermione's end, maybe being with Draco could challenge some misconceptions she has about pureblood culture or something. Maybe being with Draco could even challenge how she views her femininity when we consider how pureblood women don't tend to be career-driven in canon, except fanatics like Bellatrix who are childless and have unhappy marriages. Also, I think Hermione's flaw of being vindictive and aggressive could have been challenged more in Dramione. I despise how JKR lets Hermione get away with murder in Romione. Even when Hermione is wrong, it ends up being Ron's fault. Disgusting!
Draco and Hermione would never touch each other in canon.
That's so true...that's why fanfiction and fanon exist. To explore creative possibilities. It's always a bit amusing when I see canon shippers of ships like Kataang, Hinny and Romione complain about the lack of fan content. Like dude, you have canon as your content. Of course, fanon couples will have a tendency to have more fan works due to the lack of canon material.
While many Dramione fics are annoying and totally OOC, there are some concepts that can honor canon that I find intriguing:
Draco and Hermione are forced to be together. This way they have to find a way to reconcile whatever bad feelings they have so they are not miserable for eternity.
Draco and Hermione meet as kids. This allows their personality and impressions of each other to slightly change before canon starts.
Draco and Hermione meet again as grown adults. Maybe Romione and Drastoria did not work out for non bashing reasons and they form a tentative acquaintance as mature adults which blooms into something more.
Draco begins his redemption/awakening arc prior to starting Hogwarts. I like fics where Draco begins questioning his parents' beliefs due to some external factor (like his Aunt Andromeda). That way Draco starts Hogwarts with a lot of his awful bigotry gone. Not all of it but even a small portion of it, making Dramione more feasible.
Draco was Hermione's bully.
It's called enemies to lovers for a reason...you know because the people were enemies. Duh. I will argue that Draco's actions towards Hermione are not as devastating as most people think and are totally redeemable. I will die on that hill (not really lol). All of Draco's biggest offences against her are verbal in nature and he arguably harrassed her the least in the trio. If JKR showed Hermione being impacted by Draco's slurs, I would 100% feel differently. However, Hermione treats Draco like an annoying fly - Draco does not hurt her in any meaningful way to totally dismiss Dramione as a ship in my view.
Draco and Hermione are happy in their canon ships
I love when my fav character ends up in a happy, loving relationship. I hate that Draco lost his wife which is one minor reason I dislike Drastoria. But that's besides the point.
Part of the reason why I dislike the teen ships Romione and Hinny is that they don't really matter much in the narrative. If you take them out, nothing changes, especially Hinny.
For example, there's nothing profound or grand about Ron marrying Hermione. The Weasleys are pro-muggle (...at least in spirit...) so who cares about Romione getting together? I sure don't. The most profound thing about Romione is that Harmione did not happen with Harry and Hermione being the male and female leads. However, Romione still occurs within the friend circle. Same with Hinny. They are safe pairings that don't challenge the status quo. Safe pairings are cozy but most tend to be uninteresting.
On the other hand, Dramione offers the potential for a richer narrative. It could symbolize the potential for change in traditional pureblood families - the start of an era of unity. Between Slytherin and Gryffindor, purebloods and mugglebornes. Because JKR ended HP with the chasm still wide open. Nothing changed except who was on top. Draco is the face of the younger Slytherin generation and is the scion of two prestigious pureblood houses. His ending the story being romantically involved with Hermione would have been amazing to see. Instead of seeing everyone still stuck in their own corners in the epilogue. How disappointing. JKR even ruined Harry's moving speech to Albus with that line about choosing Gryffindor if being in Slytherin bothered him so much. But JKR seems to love the status quo, so what else is to be expected?
Characters being happy in their relationships is great but I also like seeing how a relationship contributes to the themes of a story. Dramione could have offered more to the HP narrative than Romione, and maybe Drastoria, in my view.
These are my opinions. I truly don't care about Hermione so that's a big reason why I can't stand Dramione. But I do see the potential of the ship if written well.

Brock knows Bucky is underage before they do anything together sexually. He also coerces Bucky the first time they meet, regardless of his age. Yup, it's Brock's fault.
Clubs will let in people who are 18. This is a fact. Like I said in the fic, they mark that Bucky is <21 and can't drink. He has a fake ID which says he is 18.
That quote is actually inspired by my own experience, and I know I'm not the only person who felt that way. I don't claim to represent every person involved in the community. I never have. This is one person's story. You can't just make a blanket statement like "this isn't why people get into kink" because you're just fucking wrong.
Bucky knows this isn't how safewords work. He is abused and assaulted. He is being abused. He is being manipulated. You said you were older than me but your reading comprehension skills are like kindergarten level.

do you have any advice for learning japanese, getting started? any cool handbooks, dictionaries or software?
Hi anon!! I got this message late at night and I didn't want to respond when I was super sleepy, so I hope you don't mind my answering now.
I'm flattered that you'd ask for my advice on this - I should probably note as a disclaimer that I'm very much still a beginner; I've been studying for less than two years.
With that said, my first recommendation in terms of online content has got to be imabi. It's far and away the best free English-language Japanese grammar learning resource I've found; essentially, it's an in-depth, straightforward explanation of virtually any grammar point that could come up in one's initial studies, and plenty of advanced material too.
In terms of dictionaries, I find that Jisho.org is the best English-Japanese/Japanese-English dictionary online; it's highly comprehensive, and also allows you to search full passages at once, which is an indispensible feature. As for Japanese-language dictionaries, I'd also recommend kotobank for ease of use, but there are many out there; looking up definitions in Japanese for Japanese words is worth the extra effort of reading/translating the dictionary entries, for the additional clarity on nuance and usage that it provides.
Finally, in terms of more general advice, I'd recommend using the language as much as you can day-to-day. If, like me, you don't have the opportunity to speak with native Japanese speakers regularly (or at all), the best way to do this is reading. Read Japanese newspapers, Japanese wikipedia, manga, anime screenplays, any number of classic novels or poems available online. Look up the words you don't know, study the grammar you don't understand, and eventually you'll find yourself looking things up less and less often. Read aloud, too, if only to yourself - obviously without any way to correct yourself, you'll make mistakes, but making mistakes is how you learn. Listening to recordings of native speakers - again, Japanese-language news resources & pop-culture (including music) are great ways to get a feel for pronunciation.
You've probably already heard this one, but - learn the two syllabaries as soon as possible. It's easier than it seems at first, and you'll really want to get sight-reading hiragana and katakana down before you start to study kanji. Because romaji isn't standardised (or, rather, because there are multiple competing standards both in Japan and abroad) it's really not all that helpful. Focus on using the language - writing longhand, typing, reading, and speaking - and don't worry about making mistakes. Even if it's embarrassing, it's just like using words in your native language when you were younger - if you use a word wrong and someone corrects you, you'll surely remember that word in the future, and that's how you get better at any language.

Okay, I've received a couple of asks and DMs more or less revolving around this topic, so I'm going to address it here.
My blog's main goal is to interact with my existing readers, since all my stories are on AO3 and Wattpad (I've only posted a couple here). I use it to answer your questions on my writings, the characters, and whatever you guys want to ask me, and I love it. Of course I'm happy if I get some more readers from Tumblr, but that's not my primary aim here, at least for now.
It would be great to use this page to expand my followers, but I barely have time to actually write these days, so unfortunately, at the moment, I can't afford to spend any to curate this space... except for answering your asks. (on this regard, I know I'm months late for some, please don't lose hope, everything is there and will be worked on eventually!)
That said, even if I do get time to dedicate to my tumblr at some point, it'll probably be ordering my posts and posting my other stories, not much more. Before I go into more details on my thoughts on fandom discourse and fics/headcanons, let me repeat the usual disclaimer...
The ones below represent my very personal views. They are not right or wrong, and it absolutely does not mean I disapprove of different views. I encourage you all to enjoy the fandom experience and community in the way you see fit, as long as it's not damaging you or anyone else.
Fandom discourse. I... simply don't really care about it. I'm talking mainly about One Piece, but this can apply to any content I enjoy. Here's how my experience goes: I read the manga, the SBS, watch the anime, consume basically any content available. I follow a couple of OP youtubers talking about every little thing, from chapter reviews to any kind of news (Tekking101 and Sawyer7mage). Then I write fanfictions based on all the knowledge accumulated, of course expanding into my personal headcanons. This pretty much satiates my thirst for content and need for sources.
Obviously I enjoy talking about OP with other fans, especially like-minded ones such as Kid Pirates fans. Buuuut being an active part of the community can also be exhausting. I'm sure you know there's a lot of Kid dissing going on for example, and Kid fans are often caught in battles to defend him. I honestly don't want to take part into it, because I don't think other people's feelings about a character should influence my experience of the show anyway, so I don't care about changing their mind either. I just... wanna do my own thing and share it with my mutuals & readers.
Analyses, meta, theories. Honestly, the two OP youtubers I follow (plus Arthur's posts on Twitter) fulfill this need in a very comprehensive way. I've yet to see a single tumblr post that comes even close to their insights (but if you know some, feel free to point me in that direction, I'll be happy to check them out). They often even contain inaccurate information. I do reblog whatever I deem interesting though, and I'll gladly answer to anything if you wanna know about my thoughts.
Fics & headcanons. Once again, I'll always be super happy to share my content with you guys. I cannot accept fic requests but feel free to ask for any headcanon you may be interested in!
As for other people's stuff. I said this before, unfortunately I'm a terribly picky reader (this does not only apply to fics, but to literature in general). The slightest hint of "unjustified" OC, a Mary Sue trait on a MC, too many cliches, a writing style that does not catch me... I'll scroll ahead. I know many will roll their eyes at this, and they are right, but I just won't impose something I don't fully enjoy to myself, not with my limited spare time. But writers should write whatever they want and I'll never be unsupportive of that, even if it's not my jazz! The stuff I read and enjoyed, I reblog.

no wait actually as an avid reader English classes pissed me off so bad in high school. before high school I just found them vaguely annoying because it was super easy stuff— the author says in paragraph 3 that daisy is mad. Which of these word is a synonym for “mad”?— but in high school they really started to lean into analysis that was deeper than “surface level”. Here’s the thing. I’ve been writing fanfiction since I was 11. I know how to read between the lines. I know how to analyze shit. Been doing it forever. So I get to English classes where they’re asking me to do that and I go “great! this will be fun!”— only to be told that I am, in fact, wrong, in my interpretation of whatever current book we were reading.
This happened a lot for a lot of books (I am autistic lmao), but the one that infuriates me to this day is when we read Things Fall Apart in my senior year English class. Note that we did not read Heart of Darkness, which supposedly this book was a response to, so I could very well be missing a chunk of analysis here. It essentially followed a man living in Nigeria pre-colonialism and followed his life as European “missionaries” slowly started invading the surrounding area & eventually his home. According to my English teacher, Heart of Darkness portrayed the indigenous people in African in a very negative light and erased a lot of their culture, and Things Fall Apart was written as a rebuttal to showcase the rich culture and interior lives of the people portrayed as “savages” in Heart of Darkness.
And yes, the book did a wonderful job of showcasing the presence of a thriving culture and the personhood of those living in Nigeria! However. This teacher absolutely refused to hear any analysis that painted the main character in a bad light. If you pointed out that any of his actions were bad and suggested that he had personal growth to do, she’d shut you down immediately. I specifically was told “it’s a different culture and you can’t judge them based on our cultural standards.” My class was told the protagonist was a good guy trying his best, & that’s what the book was trying to showcase. If you listened to my English teacher without ever touching this book, you’d probably think it was about a guy doing his best and who therefore didn’t deserve the violence he experienced at the hands of the colonizers. (Disclaimer here that shouldn’t need to be said but I’m saying it anyways: You can’t “deserve” to be colonized. No culture or individual person should ever be forced to endure colonization. Full stop, period, end of story.)
Here’s the thing. This dude sucked balls, guys. He murders his adopted son. He hits his kids. He abuses his wives. & the whole time shows no learning from any of these actions. And those actions formed my analysis of the book! My analysis was that this guy sucked hard and the point of the book was that even when people suck, colonization is bad. My TEACHER’S analysis (and the only analysis she allowed us to discuss) was that this guy was a good guy and the point of the book was to make us feel bad that a good guy was the victim of colonization. I don’t even think I need to unpack why that’s totally bullshit, y’all have reading comprehension skills lmao.
To this day I still bitch about this book and this unit to my friends who were in that class. Not that any media analysis should ever be considered “right” or “wrong,” but to be told I was wrong in my analysis when I so very clearly was not was infuriating.

Um, would it be wrong to ask for an explanation of the lore of Bendy? I’ve seen the wiki page, but going from my experience of FNAF lore, it’ll take more than a few videos to truly get it.
A tall order, friend, but I like a challenge! My disclaimer, before I even start to get into this: I don’t know everything about Bendy, the timelines, the characters, etc. There are three games (Bendy and the Ink Machine, Boris and the Dark Survival, and Bendy and the Dark Revival) and some books. I know only BatIM and BatDR. So this is not comprehensive and probably isn’t completely accurate. Much like with fnaf, I also tend to cherrypick my favorite bits and pieces, and also I’m an old timer from when all we had were loads of theories about the lore. So in some aspects, I’m kinda set in my ways and thus haven’t fully absorbed canon that goes against my preferences.
Now, I haven’t watched all his BatIM videos, but I highly recommend SuperHorrorBro’s BatDR Story Explained. It’s about 45 minutes and he does a very good job of contextualizing a lot of the timeline and stuff, imo. His playthrough of BatDR is also very good, if you feel like going through the whole game.
And here’s the final thing: so sorry if this is presumptuous, but if you’re asking with the intent to read my own stories, I largely use non-canon stuff as of the end of BatIM. So I do mention some differences between canon and my fics. Should go without saying, but there are a hecking ton of spoilers ahead.
(Much like trying to explain fnaf, there’s no real short answer here. Bear with me, friend.)
Let’s start with some important characters:
Henry Stein
My personal favorite character (which is HEAVILY reflected in my fics, lol), he’s who you play as in BatIM. He’s an animator who once worked on the Bendy cartoons before leaving the studio to spend more time with his family. He’d been expected to put a lot of crazy hours in, which understandably wasn’t working out. Now, in the games, he doesn’t have a ton of characterization (again, can’t speak as to the books), but he comes across as a pretty chill dude. What little dialogue we get from him in BatIM paints him as someone who’s friendly, optimistic or at least not easily beaten down, and concerned with the overall state of affairs. I personally write him as someone who upholds kindness above all else, whose determination gives him a spine of steel, and who sees the toons and goes into Dad Mode almost immediately. 99% of my BatIM stories feature dad!Henry, and he’s a very, very good dad.
(Something else of note, and I’m genuinely not sure where it falls in terms of being canon or not, is I consider Henry to be the Creator. This has a pretty similar meaning across all the fics I use the concept in, but even with the differences, it boils down to him having a certain influence over the ink and often using those “powers” to help the toons. It’s got a little bit of a “chosen one” trope to it, and AU background stuff can influence how meaningful it is vs how symbolic.)
At the end of BatIM and further confirmed in BatDR, we find out the Henry you play as is not the real Henry Stein. He’s merely an ink copy created by Joey Drew so Joey could work his frustrations out on a fake version of his old friend. 😐 The ink version of Henry is trapped in the inky realm created by Joey in an endless loop of repeating the same script (the game) over and over again. I don’t use this piece of canon. In any BatDR fics I’ve written/am writing so far, Henry is the real deal.

As a quick side note, any time I talk about the loop/cycle, I’m referring to an actual different world. Joey created this world and gave it a set script that all the creatures in it have to follow. These are the events of the first game. Everything resets after the end, and none of the characters remember/are aware that this is happening. You could argue that Henry now remembers if you start the game over, especially if you have something called the Seeing Tool (why did I think it was the Viewing Tool?? oh well) you get in the last chapter that reveals a lot of hidden messages. The set script is broken by the time BatDR takes place.

Joey Drew
The boss of Joey Drew Studios, he came across throughout BatIM as constantly pushing his employees past their limits, being a very obnoxiously cheerful dude, and not particularly caring when his delusions of grandeur began to affect the studio and employees. Speaking of which, he took a fair amount of his employees and sacrificed them and/or turned them into inky abominations. I’m not sure if it’s canon that all of the implied toon-ified employees are really them or if any of them are inky copies like Henry. I typically treat it like he full-on ruined a lot of people’s lives. We find out in BatDR that he didn’t work alone, though. There was some extremely shady stuff and lots of delightful implications of human experimentation expanded upon in BatDR regarding the Gent corporation, who I believe helped with the Ink Machine and ink supply and whatnot.
Joey makes a proper appearance in BatDR as a ghost-like memory of himself. But in the human world, Joey has died.
I’ve personally written Joey in a lot of different situations and personalities. Sometimes, he’s an absolute monster in my fics. Sometimes, he and Henry are like brothers. I don’t know if I’d call him one of my favorite characters, but I love playing with him.

Bendy
The titular character, Bendy is either: A) a very cute little demon cartoon character who many fic authors write as mischievous, silly, and gosh dang adorable (he never actually appeared in BatIM but boy do we pretend he did), this particular side of Bendy is almost entirely fanon, B) an intimidatingly tall, lanky off-model form of the former who hunts Henry down, often written as either plain old evil or just misunderstood (I’ve done both), also referred to as “Bendy” with the quotation marks or as Ink Bendy; he’s one of the main antagonists in BatIM and is an instant death if he catches Henry, or C) an actual demon-looking character more commonly referred to as the Ink Demon, who is one of the main antagonists in BatDR, and he has a bit of a split personality deal going on where he becomes small cute Bendy and is friendly (this is the result of torture), but it should be noted that this small Bendy is somewhat childlike and mute, which I consider to be very different from the fanon version A.

Twisted Alice Angel (sometimes called Malice or “Alice”)
Much like version B of Bendy, Twisted Alice is an off-model version of Alice Angel the in-game cartoon character (who never actually appears as a character in the games). She’s got some Two-Face vibes, in terms of appearance, and she’s mad about it. She wants to be perfect and has dissected a lot of poor toons to try and fix herself. She’s the result of Susie Campbell, Alice Angel’s voice actor, being sacrificed and toon-ified. She’s one of the main antagonists of BatIM and a minor antagonist in BatDR. Fandom’s biggest gripe with her is that she took our friend Boris, mutated him, and made him attack Henry. :( Very rude. Her obsession with being perfect gives her a bit of a crazy vibe, but make no mistake, she’s cruel for fun too.

Boris (also called Buddy Boris because of one of the books, I think)
Boris the wolf is Henry’s friend in BatIM who gets kidnapped and ultimately killed. Of the main trio (Bendy, Alice, Boris), he’s the only one on-model. Without having played/watched Boris’s game, I don’t have much to say about him other than he’s a very good boy. Silly, helpful, nice to Henry, scared of “Bendy.” My understanding is that someone named Buddy was sacrificed and toon-ified to become him. Fandom gets pretty creative with Boris, imo, and I usually treat the three of them like siblings and give him a voice even though he doesn’t speak in the game.

Edgar, Charley, and Barley (The Striker, The Piper, The Fisher)
The Butcher Gang! They’re some of the only other named toons that exist, and I personally like them a lot. The trio have been mutilated and copied a lot of times over. They’re recurring enemies you have to fight in both BatIM and BatDR, though more so the former. It’s unclear who, if anyone, was sacrificed to make them. In BatDR, we find out about a potential fourth member, Carley (The Slicer), who’s a ghost girl.

Notable Employees:
Sammy Lawerence: He becomes a cultish inky man who calls the Ink Demon his lord, and is a minor antagonist in BatIM. He was the music director in life and comes across through his tapes as a no-nonsense perfectionist who is extremely Done with some of his coworkers. I’ve always thought of him as long-suffering, sarcastic, and always just on the verge of strangling someone. They did him so dirty in BatDR, lol.
Susie Campbell: Alice Angel’s voice actor who was eventually replaced. Pretty self-centered and dedicated to her role, from what I got from her tapes. I don’t actually know much more about her than that, as far as canon goes.
Norman Polk: He was the studio’s projectionist and then became The Projectionist (I love his design). He’s a minor antagonist in BatIM who roams one particular floor that’s laid out like a maze before having his head ripped off later by “Bendy.” Bit of an eavesdropper in life. Can’t talk but sure does make some heart-stopping screeches!
Wally Franks: The iconic “I’m outta here!” line comes from Wally (I throw it in to fics whenever I can). He was a janitor/handman, and I believe he escaped the studio unscathed.
Allison Pendle: She replaced Susie as Alice Angel’s voice actor and inspired Joey to be a better person (His “be a better person” bit that he talks about in BatDR doesn’t actually portray him in that much better of a light). She becomes Allison Angel in the inky world, who is an ally to Henry in BatIM (mostly; a lot of us had mixed feelings on her to start with). She has a machete, which is cool.
Thomas Connor: I think he actually worked for Gent technically, but he’s important because he was toon-ified into Tom, a Boris clone. Tom is mute, and he and Allison are a team in BatIM and BatDR. He’s also got a prosthetic arm.
Shawn Flynn: A toymaker in the studio who also escaped unscathed. He’s in a medium-amount of fics because he’s voiced by jacksepticeye he was one of the handful of names we got in BatIM and we needed all the employees we could get, lol.

The Searchers
Faceless, moaning ink people who lack legs and drag themselves around after the player character. Recurring enemy in BatIM, but I think I only remember them in one place in BatDR.
• • •
The Lost Ones
Ink people with glowing eyes. In BatIM, they were a group of mostly mute, shivering victims. Very tragic, big gut-punch moment. In BatDR, some have names and personalities and talk! Most of them are hostile, which I’m not a huge fan of, but it’s fine. The two notable Lost Ones are Porter, who gives you a teleporting ability and is a silly dude, and Heidi, who helps you get through a locked door after you play hide and seek with her.

Audrey Drew
The player character in BatDR, Audrey gets dragged into the inky realm and has to survive and escape (this is the same premise as BatIM). She’s a young adult who’s an animator for the company that bought Joey Drew Studios and the Bendy cartoons after Joey’s death. She’s got a good sense of humor when she’s not understandably panicking about being dragged into a whole new world, she’s friendly and willing to trust others, and she is not happy about the Ink Demon stalking her. She’s even less happy to find out she’s not human! Joey’s memory shows up and tells her that she was created by the Ink Machine by the real Joey Drew to be his daughter. It’s established that she doesn’t remember most of her childhood or her parents, though I personally am unclear as to what happened. Joey only died about a year before the events of BatDR, so it wasn’t like he died when she was a little kid. How or why did she forget him? I don’t know.
Anyway, Audrey obtains some cool powers during her journey, most notably Flow (a teleporting ability gifted to her by Porter). Her legs get ripped off in the final battle, and as a result, when the Ink Demon tries to convince her to give up, she surrenders and they become one. Soon after, she takes control of their body and ultimately resets the cycle, undoing everything. The last we see of her is her back in the human world with little Bendy.

Wilson Arch
I hate him, he’s creepy. He tricks Audrey into helping him set up the Ink Machine before dragging her into the inky realm. He (falsely) claims to have defeated the Ink Demon and acts as the ruler of that world. He’s also the son of the guy who bought Joey Drew Studios. We find out toward the end that he wants to yoink Audrey’s soul and use it to bring his OC to life, lol. Instead, he ends up getting torn apart and becoming the new toon himself before Audrey and the Ink Demon sort of tag-team kill him.

The Keepers
Monstrous toons created by Wilson who slither around and are much faster than they look. They talk slow and glitchy, like Daleks from Doctor Who. They work for Wilson and actively hinder Audrey several times during her adventure.

The Signal Towers
Not a character but important to the lore of BatDR and deserving of a mention. They kinda look like plasma balls without the shell and have colored electricity zapping around them. They’re set up around Wilson’s headquarters, the Gent building and his retreat, to keep the Ink Demon out. They also actively hinder ink-related powers, like Flow.

The Basics of the Main Games:
Bendy and the Ink Machine
You play as Henry, who received a letter from his old pal Joey asking him to come back to the old studio. After turning on the Ink Machine, he progressively ends up deeper and deeper in the studio even as he tries to escape. He has to fight for his life against a multitude of enemies, ranging from intelligent to mindless. If he dies, he travels through an inky tunnel full of voices until he pops back up, alive. This game has my favorite mechanic. In Chapter 3: “Bendy” roams around and chases Henry if he spots you, and it was terrifying to play and I loved that. After solving puzzles and completing fetch quests for Twisted Alice, Henry ends up in a final confrontation with “Bendy,” and if he makes it through the boss fight, he plays a reel with The End written on it, ending the loop and maybe killing “Bendy.” That doesn’t really matter, though, because Henry then finds himself in Joey Drew’s home, where a much older Joey rambles at him (Henry totally deserved to punch him), before Joey sends Henry through the front door and right back into the studio. It reveals Henry is stuck in an parallel dimension featuring an endless loop of him arriving to the fake studio, turning on the Ink Machine, fighting those same enemies, solving those same puzzles, going on those same fetch quests, all to make it to the same boss battle, where upon winning, he will start it all over again.
It makes my heart hurt for him just to think about it.

Bendy and the Dark Revival
You play as Audrey, an animator who’s staying at work late to finish up some scenes. On her way to get coffee, she encounters Wilson, which ultimately leads to her being dragged into the inky realm. Upon waking up, she has to fight for her life against a variety of enemies. She meets some friendlies, too, like Allison who has forgotten she’s Allison, Porter, and baby Bendy. Over the course of her journey, she learns more about the state of the studio and its employees and how everything fell apart. She also meets Henry, who’s imprisoned in the Gent building with a few others. At the end, she finds out the reason Wilson brought her to this world: to serve as some soul fuel for him to create a new god-like toon to replace the Ink Demon, kinda. Obviously not down for that, she struggles and Wilson ends up being fuel in her place. She has to fight the spider monkey abomination thing with Wilson’s head sticking out of the middle (it’s… delightful). Before she can bring it down, it tears her legs off. The Ink Demon intervenes before she can be killed, destroying the monster as Audrey bleeds out. He convinces her to join him in the darkness and they become Beast Bendy, who is very large. Joey shows up with the The End tape. Beast Bendy promptly kills Joey’s memory (not sure if that’s a permanent thing or what) before Audrey takes control. Henry, who among others has been freed by Allison, gives her Norman's projector head to play the The End tape from BatIM on, and by playing it, she resets the cycle once again.
I have yet to write a BatDR fic where she actually resets the cycle. I’m not a fan of that, tbh.

And those are the basics! I think once you know the characters and the general idea of the main games, you’d be able to adjust pretty quickly to fic, if that’s your goal. Especially since a lot of fics do use their own not-canon-compliant rules. If you have questions about anything I mentioned or about things I didn’t mention, I’d be happy to try and answer them. Like I said, I don’t know the full story, having only played/watched a fraction of the available material. But only knowing BatIM/BatDR has gotten me this far, haha! I do hope this helped you understand this fandom at least a little more, friend! I promise, it’s a fun playground we’ve got here!

A Comprehensive Guide To The Ao3 Tagging System
There may be other ways to do it, but this is the way I do it. I see a lot of people on, like, wattpad and ff.net who don’t go on ao3 because it’s tagging system is intimidating, but speaking from an ao3 perspective, wattpad and ff.net’s tagging systems are almost unusable. So, here’s a guide to fix that gap!
Okay, so when you get to the home page it should look something like this
There are multiple different ways to do this, but the easiest way is to click on the search button in the top right hand corner. You don’t need to put anything into the search bar to be able to search. After you do that, it should look something like this
After this, you click on the search bar again. That should take you to a page that looks like this
From this, it’s pretty self explanatory, and you can press on the blue question marks if you don’t understand.
Here are the kinks: if you use the title and it doesn’t turn up the fic you want, it doesn’t mean necessarily that the fic isn’t on the archive. Sometimes it glitches and doesn’t show it up, which means if your trying to find a fic you’ve already read your better chance is to memorize the authors username, because that doesn’t happen with usernames.
The date field doesn’t work, it’ll show you up nothing.
For the word count, you can’t do specific numbers. If you type in 10,000, it will only pull up fics with exactly 10,000 words, which is why you have to use < and >. But the thing about that is that they’re switched around. So if you typed in >10000, it’ll show up more than ten thousand, and vice versa. (It won’t understand if you use commas.)
For the character, relationships, and additional tags- when you type anything in, it’ll bring a drop down menu of the sites predictions for what you might mean. But the thing is, if you just typed in, for example, ‘parental aizawa’, and put that in as a tag, nothing would show up, because there are no tags that are exactly just ‘parental aizawa’. There’s no AI involved, it’s not gonna predict you. If you wanted to get the parental aizawa tag, you’d have to type in the whole “ Parental | Aizawa Shouta | Eraserhead | Dadzawa” tag, otherwise it’ll search for exactly the tag you searched for and nothing will come up. (But obviously, no one types in the whole tags. You just use the recommended official tags that come through the drop-down.) Not all ao3 tags that are in use are official, though. There are, sort of, ‘tropes’ for ao3 tags that translate to multiple different ideas for different characters, but there are too many of them to list out, and we don’t need to because you’ll start memorizing without even trying the more you search.
Oh also, unrelated to the search terms: if you’re writing a fic, don’t write it in the official ao3 writing box. If you exit the site, there’s a good chance it’ll erase the work. (Oh and choose your font before, otherwise it’ll glitch and erase all your paragraph breaks.) this glitch is noted in the site. Oh also- drafts are only saved for a month after the original editing date. Your better choice would just be to write in a third party app.
Back on topic. Most of the tags are really self explanatory if you just look at them, so it feels a bit redundant to me to explain them, but that’s the main reason it feels so overwhelming to people, so I’m going to do it. Disclaimer: you don’t have to fill out every section of the form before searching for a work.
The ‘any field’ tag is tricky and finicky, and tbh, it’s better left alone if you’re just learning the tagging system. Your least important ones, (at least by my experience,) are the date, title, and the work stats. They’re more trouble than they’re worth.
The author/artist tag is exactly what it sounds like. You put in someone’s exact username, (it has to be exact,) and it’ll show you all of their works (that match with whatever other specifications you’ve put in.)
The ‘completion status’, ‘crossovers’ and ‘single chapter’ are easy, because you just click one. If you don’t click that you want a single chapter, it will give you both single and multiple works.
The language section is a giant drop down, it’s organized a-z. Most of the archives fics are in English, so you probably don’t really have to worry about it. If you don’t click on any language, it’ll show you every fic that ,atches your other specifications, and they might not be in English. (But most of them are, so you really don’t need to worry about it.)
Personally, I find I don’t usually specify on the ‘ratings, warnings, and categories’ options, but it really depends on what you’re looking for. But those are fairly easy, you just choose an option if you want to. If you don’t specify, it’ll factor that out and show you everything.

This is a legit way to absolutely obliterate the game. This is how winning is done. Ok so basically it is a pretty easy game and its broken. Disclaimer: This took me about 5 new saves to win off the starting 2K, but after that its a legit infinite money glitch, as long as you hit more than 2K in that bonus you should be able to do the rest. About the Culinarian
Hey ladies, gents and folks who know better! I’m the keeper of the blog. I’ve been living in Japan for about 2-3 years, and I teach English here. I’m not quite modern enough to willingly share more than that about me, so we’ll be using my ff14 main to rep me.
This is Aelaeis Kelleran! He’s a funny little fella from Zalera whose recently been trying to get all the classes to max to get that adorable Amaro mount. He collects mounts and minions and names them after food, will walk on foot from one corner of the map to the other to save some gil, and is the only one in his GC who can do the Nier raids without getting motion sick. I’m pretty fond of this fella.
I first went to the Eorzea Cafe back in 2020, finishing Shadowbringers in a regimented rush in order to save myself from spoilers in the menu or the music. And boy, when I walked in there and all the commercials for the latest patches were playing everywhere, was I glad I did that! Since then I’ve been trying to come semi-regularly as time and budget allow, eating my way slowly but surely through the menu. I wanted to find a more complete guide to the menus but only found a few that were from self-confessed picky eaters.
So in an effort to be both comprehensive and transparent, here’s some disclaimers about my eating experiences!
-I’ve grown up with a Japanese palette as part of my staple diet. This means I have no issue with raw fish, squid, shellfish, tofu, soy or miso and I often do not consider these options adventurous. Same goes for drinks like Calpis, matcha and melon soda.I will however attempt to consider these for more culinarily timid folks when I eat.
-As of time of writing I have no dietary restrictions nor limitations, and have so far not checked for any due to my difficulty reading Japanese. While I have no doubt a server would help you should you tell them your own dietary restrictions, I myself have not tried it.
-I’m an American, and I’ve grown up very used to heavier and stronger flavor profiles. So while I appreciate balance and restraint in a dish, often times its the drinks and foods that pack a punch that I like.
-While I consider myself decently middling when it comes to being adventurous, I consider myself pretty weak when it comes to spice. I can handle Indian food at a 1 or sometimes 2 star level and I mix wasabi into my soy sauce, but too much black pepper can do me in and I can finish only about half of a loaded jalapeno burger before I start to cave.
-I absolutely do not mess around with slimy food. Natto, Okra--anything at snot or snail consistency I don’t so much as touch. Texture is almost as important as flavor for me, if not moreso.
-I am always going to have a bias towards foods that include some element of the following: Chocolate, peach, mango, apple, creme bruele, deep fry, potato, french fries, cajun seasoning, garlic, and tonkatsu/pork cutlets.
-Above all else, I am not a professional. I do not professionally prepare, judge nor even consume food for a living. I also do not professionally keep track of Final Fantasy 14 lore and facts. As much as I would love to, I do not get paid full time for this work and do it as a passion project and so that way the wonderful Eorzea Cafe has an updating record for as long as I am in a position to keep it.
Oh boy. Could anyone else go for some fried dodo right now? I honestly could...
