How do you think the guys dynamics would vary with each reader and would it be a huge difference if they were a pouge or kook like we all know pope and kook bunny would have a hugely different dynamic from pope and kitty but would it have a huge difference from pope and pouge bunny? jj and rafe would have the biggest change in dynamics because of how they feel about kooks and pogues respectively. i think for jj him with any of the girls as a kook will be inherently antagonistic because he's resentful I used to write that a lot! pogue bunny is special though bc shes just a cunt and despite her wealth status she thinks shes too good for the pogues which is what pisses him off so bad. I also think that like he changes a lot based on the girl because like him and pup always give besties, he would find bunny reader annoying and do his best to knock her down a few pegs, fox reader would be her being annoyed as fuck with him and kitten reader is just a good back and forth where they have turns being annoyed w each other but they compliment each other great
with rafe he has a superiority complex so him with a pogue he's thinking he can "save" her and rescue her from her shit life. I also think he only rlly works with bunny reader there's something so toxic and fun about them but their personalities blend the best both in positive and negative ways. he likes having control over her because she always gives it up. he wouldnt be able to fucking stand fox!reader she's weird and snarky, pup!reader is close to bunny!reader in energy but she's not submissive and quiet enough and he would also really get annoyed with kitten!reader because shes wild and no matter what shes gonna do what she wants
pope would change a lot based on the different girls but not as much with pogue vs kook, I think pope with like bunny!reader is much more awkward and cautious than with fox!reader for instance but when it comes to class status at most he's just a little uncomfortable but he can adapt pretty fine.
john b changes more due to class status not so much with the different girls. him with kook!reader there's a little antagonism, he would tease them for being spoiled and ignorant but nothing intense really. with pogue reader he's much more flippant almost he doesnt worry about them as much

hello anon my beloved, I am in a bad mood so you will be receiving a passionate, yet lowkey of pissy rant about why villainizing bakugou makes me wanna vomit and its NOT just because I'm a dumbass kinnie :)
tws: child abuse (emotional and physical), near death expierences, bullying, kidnapping, suffocation, lots of trauma in general tbh. if you've seen bnha then basically just keep all the general triggering plot stuff in mind incase i missed any warnings
also, note: I havent caught up on bnha in a minute, I'm at like the start of the war arc but I barely remember shit there tbh so like. probs missing new stuff. also bnha spoiler warnings lol
so, for starters, the homie bakugou has like,, a good handful of issues that come from his childhood that explain why he's an ass. he was always praised and never actually reprimanded for being a twat which led to him having a huge ego that ended up fucking him over majorly. this ego was something that his mother acknowledged him having, but literally didnt try to fix it with anything other than violence. see here:
like, instead of trying to help him, she hits and insults him, which is probably what led to his weird inferiority/superiority complex. being constantly told by others that you're outstanding and one day you'll be a top hero because you're rude and aggressive and then going home and being hit by your mother for those exact same behaviors is bound to fucking confuse a child.
so like, now that we've established that its definetly canon that his mother (parents? I think he said parents at some point but masaru doesn't seem like the type so 🤷) hits him though we don't know how much or how often (though if bakugou was as much of a little shit back then ((which as far as we've seen- he was)) then it was probably often), lets talk about how regardless of all that 1) hitting your kids as "discipline" not only doesn't work but is abusive lol like idc if it's spanking/popping them on the mouth for talking shit, slapping them across the face "on occasion", etc. shits not okay 2) hitting your kids!!!! does not work!!!!!!!! it is literally PROVEN not to work!!!!!!!! hitting a child who has done something wrong doesnt teach them to stop doing something it teaches them to be scared of you, which will cause the child to withdraw, removing part of their support system (assuming said abusive parents would even offer that up) and will most likely lead to them thinking they're a bad person, not that their actions were bad, which are two different things. so, ya know, that would clearly have an effect on a kid. like, as someone with a mother who reminds me all too much of mitsuki: I have acted like a complete shitbag and taken my anger out on people to feel better in the past because of the way my mother treated me. though it was nowhere near what bakugou did, I still know first fucking hand what a mother hitting and insulting her child will do, especially if they have no proper outlet for that (friends, a safe place to vent) which bakugou never fucking had.
theres also the fact that just talking to your kid the way mitsuki does (saying it's his fault he was kidnapped because he's weak, all while hitting him) is not??? okay?????? ive seen people arguing that this was just a joke in poor taste but like her son was KIDNAPPED and even if it was a "joke" there's literally NO WAY that would EVER?? BE FUNNY??????? she just sounds like the kind of parent who at the very least says shit without thinking that would traumatize bakugou (because being told right after being kidnapped it's your fucking fault by your mother is absolutely traumatizing) but it comes across as her being emotionally abusive.
mitsukis character as a whole comes across as a shitty mom who doesn't realize she's a shitty mom and thinks bakugou being an ass isn't at least partially her fault even though she's admitted to realizing he has always had an ego problem and doing nothing to fix it except for hitting and yelling which obviously did nothing but make him just as loud and violent as she is.
this is obviously not the entire reason why he's a dick but he was never properly taught that the shit he was doing wasn't okay and people not stopping it and/or praising him endlessly even tho he was a bully is basically the same as encouraging it, thank you very much.
moving on from that, let's talk about bakugous other traumas and how he naturally responds to them. hint: it's with either full blown panic or a fight response (verbal or physical, though usually physical. also sometimes it's the panic followed by the fight response.)
so far in bnha (keep in mind that I am not caught up, I've only read up to the beginning of the war arc and i barely remember those bits so) bakugou has...
nearly died via sludge villain (he was unable to move and was being suffocated to death- keep this in mind)
lost for the first time ever and against deku of all people (this nearly sent him into a full blown panic attack, likely because of that sexy little inferiority/superiority complex combo. think of this as like. gifted kid burnout lite. he has always been the best of the best and now suddenly he is being beaten by somebody who has always been weaker than him, which immediately makes him start thinking he was never actually that good, he's actually a fucking failure, a goddamn fraud)
won the sports festival by default (bakugou counts this as yet another failure because todoroki didnt try his best. had bakugou lost to todoroki full strength, he would've taken 2nd place with a bit of bitching, but he still wouldve taken it rather than refuse the medal as it would be a reminder that he failed. instead of accepting that like UA shouldve, the staff chained and muzzled him on live television and then had all might, his fucking idol, force the medal into his mouth. remember the sludge villain incident and how he couldnt move and was suffocating to death? yeah.)
been kidnapped because of the way he reacted to winning during the sports festival (he was aggressive and tried to refuse the medal because he felt he didnt deserve it and was then retraumatized by being chained up and muzzled. his "villainous attitude" was a fucking trauma response, do not tell me otherwise)
was then chained up once again by the LOV after being kidnapped,,, do we see the "retraumatize bkg" theme yet?
"ended all might" (he literally blames himself for all mights retirement because had he just not have been weak, all might wouldve had more time, right?)
my point with all of these is that bakugou has been severely traumatized and has then had his trauma responses (aggression, fight) used to further demonize him. not all people with trauma react the fucking same and the way the fandom just refuses to acknowledge anger as a valid form of trauma response is gross as hell.
moving away from that topic, bakugou has literally never had any actual friends, they all just used him and didn't care about him which absolutely will fuck up a kid, especially one who already has all that other shit going on. bakugou deadass never had a support system or people to help him grow as a person, let alone properly work through his fucking emotions so it's not surprising that he would take out his bullshit on the one person who tried to help him especially considering he saw dekus actions as him thinking he was weak. bakugou was raised to not seek help, he thought somebody strong shouldnt ever need it, so for somebody like deku (who bakugou percieved as weak and helpless already) to offer up help? deku must obviously think bakugou is even weaker than him, what other explanation could their possibly be!
speaking of which, there's his heaps of insecurities that he basically hid by being a twat and bullying others for most of his life. kid was so insecure he bullied deku for fucking years cause he thought deku looked down on him, thought he was better than him, etc. and that only got worse bc his idol then decided to take deku in, train him and even give him his quirk. there's probably some shit im missing but still he's got issues and always has had issues. that being said, he's actually improving and working them out now which is what makes him a really good, interesting character. it's also nice to see a character who is a dick without some tragic backstory (like his backstory is sad but its not the classic "my family was fucking slaughtered and i turned into a raging bitch who murders people" type shit) bc that rarely happens and it's like most assholes don't actually have a story like that they're just assholes lol
now lets talk improvement! lil bitch has been getting better since he got into UA and im so happy abt it!! he had a rough start what with deku suddenly having a quirk and all but like he is really improving now and it highkey shows that bakugou just mostly needed people who 1) didn't constantly praise him and actually criticized him instead 2) actually fucking punished him doing stupid shit and 3) some motherfucking friends
Since going to UA he's gotten actually feedback from teachers about his weaknesses and how to get stronger, he's lost against others, hes been told he has a shit attitude and is a dick, told he should be nicer and leave deku alone, etc etc. He hasn't gotten in trouble too much with teachers but others give him shit for what he does and aizawa has punished him too, while still acknowledging that bakugou is an amazing and dedicated student, something which no one else had done up til that point. and uh???? homie actually has friends who like,,, don't use him and also call him out when he's a dick. like specifically kirishima has done this shit and him and bakugous relationship is clearly very healthy and beneficial for the both of them. makes me feel all happy n shit, ya know
bottom line is: while it is absolutely valid to dislike or even hate bakugou because he is a massively flawed person who has been very cruel to others, villainizing him for the way he acts which in large part seems to be from a lack of guidance, a shitty mother and heavy amounts of trauma, is fucking awful. his actions cannot be fucking excused, he needs to apologize and continue to grow, but he is also a fucking teenager, who is just now being told that the way he acts is unacceptable by people who dont fucking abuse him (and I swear to god if any people who think mitsuki isnt abusive interact with this fucking post I will fullstop hardblock you, I do not fucking care) and actually treat him like a normal person instead of some prodigy child or someone who needs to be fixed.
people are free to debate my points or whatever bc I know some of this stuff is up to interpretation but like. dni if you're just here to say you hate bakugou for xyz reason or that he's irredeemable. also especially dni if you compare him to fucking endeavor yall bitches make me gag.

They're really just random n messy ideas and i forget how many there are but i'm throwing them all here
so the whole thing takes place in highschool and mainly surrounds the cockswolds cotswolds (mainly mark but rebecca is usually there too)
most of them are seniors, rebecca's a junior
mark is an unpopular nerd, therefore the main character because it's the 80s. so is rebecca but she's not the main character
uhh everyone else is kinda just there
like there are no side characters all the foreign kids are kinda equal focus- wise but the main one is mark i guess
like the leader of their group idk idk
estella is the stereotypical rich popular girl, but she's also a closeted lesbian they're all closeted tbh so she's trying to hide that from her mom. Her mom, instead of being all 'Blah blah blah brrak hearts to fuel my life' or something she's just obsessed with status and how popular Estella is. She's always pleased when Estella has a boyfriend, but it's not often. Basically Estella is more smiley and happy than she usually is, but she's stil usually indifferent. Smiles either when she's genuinely happy or wants something. Most of the time she's deadpan or rolling her eyes
Gaydamien is the rich popular jock, his ego is huge. His dad (since he cant be the son of satan in this one) is the principal of their school. He usually gets what he wants, no matter what. Instead of "You dare [insert something here] to the Prince of Hell????" its that but with "Damien Thorn???" yknow because of his last name. He's been dating Estella to boost his ego, mainly. Doesn't realize he likes guys yet. Estella and Damien hate each other, but everyone believes they're dating because they're too scared to say otherwise. They complain about each other to each other AND to people in private.
Pip is just- he's less of a nerd but more of a kid that's just. There. He isn't nerdy but he definitely isn't popular. At all. He's just a pushover man idk what to tell you. He's usually being bullied. He has a huge crush on Damien, because he got him out of trouble with some other jock like. Once. Always gets giggly around him, it's funny to watch. Also very passive aggressive @ Estella because she's dating him. They have very few classes together, but whenever they do he's always like "hey :) so hows damien" and she responds with "why would i know" and he's like "because??? youre dating him???" and she looks really confused for a second and then is like "OH- Oh yeah okay uh. I don't know. So." and then she starts complaining about him or something and pip is all ":) why not just break up?"
Pip also hates Christophe
Which, speaking of, Christophe is also an annoying egotistical jock who plays football with Damien. Damien and Christophe are best friends. Christophe and Gregory are dating in secret
Gregory is the stereotypical gay kid. No other way to put this. If Ryan Evans from High School Musical had a superiority complex. He's a theatre kid, and takes pride in tha- OH MY GOD. Rachel??? Maybe he's Rachel Berry from Glee??? it would kind of work idk,, ok uh anyway yeah he's always bullied for being openly gay and it sucks but he took defense classes in Yardale (yes he's still a transfer from Yardale, yes he constantly mentions it) so he's able to hold his own. But Christophe usually steps in to get Gregory out of there and tend to his wounds.
Rebeccaaaaaa she's the unpopular girl, just started school and doesnt know shit about it after being homeschooled almost her whole life. Has a little crush on Estella, but Estella "Doesn't" notice her. (Estella just thinks of her as some pretty girl who isnt worth her time) Rebecca usually keeps to herself, is usually gossiped about. Estella never gets involved, but whenever she'd get asked about it, instead of defending Rebecca she just says "I hardly believe any of the rumors. She was homeschooled, not taught in witchcraft or satanisim. Or whatever else everyone's saying. Everyone should really calm themselves, if they were so worried about what people thought of them when Rebecca started going here then they should get that in order first before ruining Rebecca's social life. God. You all have to grow up." So, not necessarily a defense but also not an insult. Rebecca still finds it sweet.
Mark is a neerrrrrrd 80s main character. Minus the popular love interest and yearning 😩 And also if the main character had a god/superiority complex.. he's bullied the most other than Gregory, mostly by Damien n Christophe. Girls don't like him, guys don't like him, he really only had Pip and Rebecca for a while. Pip because he's overly nice to almost everyone and wanted to befriend Mark immediately. Usually during lunch Mark sits with Pip and Rebecca. Mark has to hear about Damien all the time from Pip though, so that's annoying.
Uh I know that Pocket is TECHNICALLY a foreign kid but idk shit about him and dont really think about him but he's Estella's cousin and often hangs out with her since he doesn't really have a friend group. He's also really good friends with Pip. BUT since this is a horror au he dies off early
After theyre all friends some stuff happens yada yada yada Gaymien realizes he's pan and has a crush on Pip, Estella takes Rebecca out for a makeover , Christophe gets severely injured because this is a horror au as well, Damien and Pip make out at some point-
Estella and Rebecca both know that theyre Lesbians but they refuse to admit that they like each other
Kinda thinking of this as if it was stranger things or something so i definitely want there to be like... a series of bad events. everyone thinks everythings cool and fine and whatever and there are moments where our group kinda just get to chill n' be kids. idk i just want there to be a falling out in the group and then they all realize they need each other or something dumb like that
also for some fun chill moments we can have estella and rebecca walking around holding hands and laughing n' stuff bc they love each other idk idk
and after the falling out when they all join together again estella is the first to see some scary stuff but she was also the first to drop everyone except damien and christophe (because of her mother) and so she blames herself and doesnt think she can go to them and just has to deal with it on her own
eventually she tells damien who immediately tells pip who immediately wants to get the group together again
everyone's (the cockswolds) are reluctant to hang out again because of the way they were just forgotten so easily, but they go anyway. because of the horror stuff. they both are pissed at estella though
at some point estella gets badly hurt and rebecca saves her and starts nursing her back to health
estella: why are you... why are you doing this. dont you hate me?
rebecca: i'm doing it because i actually care for you, idiot.
estella: i care for you i just... couldnt...
rebecca: what? spend time with a lowlife like me?
estella: you know thats not what i meant-
they go on like that for a little while longer until they wind up confessing to each other "Because I love you! Is that so fucking hard to believe?!" Would be rebecca's and Estella's would probably be "I don't hate you! You're my favorite person, and I hated having to stop hanging out with you! I love you, okay?!" it would be :) fun
damien and estella come out to each other first. well- damien doesnt really come out he just tells her how confused he is and they hug it out and estella tells him she's a lesbian and they both talk a little while longer and decide that breaking up would be the best idea

She was alright with being “Penny Tyler” the girl with a muggle father who left when she was six, a borderline alcoholic witch for a mother who tried her best to give Penny everything she needed to be successful in life, and one or two friends at London School who were there when she needed them, but never suffocated her. She was okay being the girl that no one knew existed, or cared about if they did. In fact, she almost loved that fact. She didn’t have to talk in class, she didn’t need to act like a good friend or pretend that she cared about other people. Everything seemed, for once, to be going alright. Then, of course, her mom fell in love (or so she claimed).
★ Augustine Nott came from a long line of pureblood wizards, and with that came a lot of gold and a big reputation, one that her mother was more than happy to become a part of. Parties every weekend and fancy gifts delivered to their dilapidated doorstep; those were the things that Mrs. Tyler lived for, and suddenly they were all hers. The wedding was fast, unexpected, and huge -- married in June of 1974. The gossip that followed it was even bigger. Penny’s mother was nothing to the pureblood family that Augustine came from; she was trash, and by association so was Penny. Nevermind that she didn’t want to live in his lavish house with his House Elf and seven bedrooms and four and a half baths. She was her mother’s daughter, and she was going to be known for it. She had a name to uphold now, there were people (her peers) that she had to socialize with and parties she had to attend, and no matter how much she wished that going to Hogwarts for her 1st year would change that, she found out it only got worse.
★ Silas Nott entered the world at only 6lbs 6oz a year after the wedding. Yet the tiniest of things, make the largest impacts. The maddening part about it all was, Penny never wanted any part of it, yet it was clear, when it came to her new baby brother, she was the person who cared the most. And being away at Hogwarts, away from him, and knowing the care that he was in (trust her, she’d grown up with Vera Tyler as a mother herself), only added to the stress. It led to outbursts in lessons, physical altercations with other students in the corridors, and a foul mouth on the quidditch pitch. Penny was kicked from the quidditch team -- one she even captained as a Seeker. But that was the only consequence she ever faced among all the incidents in her years at Hogwarts. She hated the privilege her name brought, but at least she didn’t have to kiss away her dreams of being an Auror. Penny’s currently in her last year of the Auror Academy. And while her dreams are soon to come true, she has more goals now. In her heart, she knows the influence Silas was under could forever change him. Her endgame was to have custody of him. No matter what it took.
★ It was undeniable that Penny took after her mother, the way she fell quick, hard, and deep for a wizard. Ten years her senior, Andrew Porter worked tirelessly as a well trained Hit Wizard. They’d met as soon as Penny entered the academy. It even being on her very first day had her thinking, perhaps fate did exist, and they weren’t all aimlessly wandering about. They were engaged only three months later, with a rushed wedding following everything else. But to Penny, this wasn’t rushing. This was love and why would she wait for love? But this romance was a whirlwind for a reason. The first year -- marital bliss. Nothing but surprise dates, apartment shopping, and they even got a dog together. The second year, things began to fizzle out. But, that’s what Penny had expected. That’s what she’d been taught her whole life, watching her mother go through men. 1. Txt is not an aspect of bts? They are another group with a completely different identity. They are talented enough to match bts thats why armys love them and stan them. You are insulting them (and other groups) by saying that they are just another money making machine for bighit as a replacement for bangtan??
2. Idols hate bts lol everyone knows they do. They are from the biggest most prestigious companys yet they are huge flops compared to bts and that alone is enough for them to hate bts.. ik u are not asian but its a huge thing in asia, like if u work in a rich/huge company or are from a rich family u are so much superior to everyone else and then if someone without a strong background becomes more successful than them, the rich ones automatically hate them (if this sounds like the plot of a kdrama its because. ok i’m gonna address point by point what you mentioned here. btw i’m assuming you’re different from the last anon i answered regarding “bts isn’t kpop” but if you are the same anon sorry for repeating stuff
1. i didn’t say txt is an “aspect” of bts. i mentioned them because what they are is the second bg big hit has created from scratch and the immediate successors of bts, a company that, until txt, had NOTHING but bts going for them. and even though txt is already becoming successful, the fact is that, just eyeballing it, bts brings in about 90 to 95% of big hit’s total revenue. big hit has a challenge regarding what they will do to cement themselves as a company beyond bts, and txt is the first step in that direction. when i say cash cow i mean a secondary source of income. my intention was not to disrespect txt at all, which i made clear in that textpost!! i don’t even stan txt and i’ve kept saying that they were far better than bts on the end of the year performances!!! i said, and i quote “txt ate them up because txt is a new group (that has a lot of passion and are hardworking ofc, this isn’t attacking them personally)”
just a little caveat though, an idol group is always a money making machine for a company... like. it’s important to me that you know that. like, i hope you know that big hit isn’t looking to make groups saying “oh boy, i hope they flop! i hope they’re happy doing what they like and i will never care about the utilities :)” idol companies are literally some of the most money hungry industries because they often operate at a loss. don’t for a second think that bts and txt and any group is more than an asset for the company, whose sole purpose is to make money.

3. one part of stan culture i fucking despise with my whole being is fanwars using cultural appropriation and racism as “gotcha” cards. this is a clear example of this. first you say it’s inferior to like groups who have participated in ca. alright. i will give you that. the you turn and say bts hasn’t done that and that groups such an nct who have done it recently are to blame personally, it’s not just the company’s mismanagement. okay! so by your logic, being a bts stan is superior because even though they HAVE done problematic things, they apologized. it’s really transparent how you pick and choose what is an acceptable apology and what isn’t based on your personal feelings about the group in question.
i just need to know if you are black or if you are muslim or from a minority that has been hurt by cultural appropriation, if you are then you will know that when an idol group apologizes for doing such things, it is no one’s place but their own to decide whether to accept that apology or not. i am not black, or asian, i am a latin woman who can’t tell you whether it’s okay for bts to do the things they have done. you are contradicting yourself by saying other groups who’ve done cultural appropriation are worse, and then turn around and say to me “dont pull out the bts rapline were also problematic card bc they apologised for it and havent done it again” because guess what? not everyone has forgiven bts either! they have said the n word! they have done native american culture appropriation as recently as december 2020 and neither them nor big hit apologized for that! yoongi releasing the mixtape with that jim jones sample in it was NEVER addressed by him. it was a company statement. so who are you to say that the people still hurt by yoongi’s actions, whether intentional or not, can’t talk about it and be mad at them? IT DOESN’T WORK THAT WAY.
i am not here to pass moral judgement, that’s why i don’t bring up ca in arguments. it is not my place to say whether what nct did with the muslim aesthetic should be forgiven, the same way it’s not my place to tell people who like nct that they are “worse” for liking them. people who reduce their stanning to how many “woke points” you get based on the artists you like clearly don’t care about activism in real life, they just care about it online for fanwars. to feel better about themselves for liking “unproblematic kings” and well i have news for you, NO CELEBRITY IS UNPROBLEMATIC. bts has learned from their mistakes, but they will continue to make mistakes every once in a while, case in point, the jim jones thing and the native american teepees appropriation.

My character (who is between the ages of 14 to 17 that i havent decided specifically) was taken from his family while he was a baby and now serving as a war medic to the side A (his school was specialised in normal medicine and medical magic). He was unaware of his sides actions and was brought up by the side to be exposed to propaganda. After coming to contact with his lost family from Side B and having mildly positive interractions with them, ((1))

I was wondering what he could behave, if he would be able to help people after what he went through, how he could react to his Side A friends? Thank you!((SidesAnon Extra!!)) I have read thru the blog and although magic is semiutilised it doesnt do anything normal torture doesnt do and thesetting is more realism with atouch of fantasy rather than a fantasywith a touch of realism.

I can’t give you any age-specific information because I don’t know enough about childhood development to do so. But I don’t think that should effect the answer too much in this case.
If you haven’t already you might want to look up cases like this one in Argentina where children of political opponents were taken and raised by people loyal to those in power. The Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo are a good place to start.
There were also a few cases during world war two in Europe but these can be more difficult to find and they’re not always well documented.
The answers to your questions aren’t exactly clear cut I’m afraid. A lot depends on the individuals and the circumstances.
I’m going to outline possibilities base on what I’ve read about and by survivors. But which of the possibilities is ‘right’ for your story isn’t a question I can answer. It’s up to you to decide what fits with the story you want to tell.
Broadly speaking torture causes opposition. Someone who has been tortured is likely to feel very much opposed to their torturer, and this deep seated opposition can (but does not always) extend broadly to anyone they associate with the torturer. Which can mean things like political factions, countries, ethnic groups.
Torture causes severe mental illness and sometimes physical disability. This does effect what a survivor is capable of. But they are often capable of more then we assume.
Torture effects survivors very deeply and that does have a knock on effect on their relationships. That doesn’t necessarily mean the end of those relationships.
What all this means for you is that there isn’t a straight forward road map to how your character ‘should’ behave or feel. Survivors are a varied bunch. I think that part of the commitment to showing their experiences is accepting that variety and making each story about how this particular character experienced it.
Being tortured by people he thought he could trust is certainly going to shake the character’s world view and his faith in his superiors. But he might believe that the people who abused him were rogue agents, or that his case is one of an individual miscarriage of justice rather then a systematic problem. He might never extend the intense negative feelings he has for his torturers to his friends, his unit or even the ordinary people on this side.
He might feel as though running is a precaution against a dangerous minority, rather then abandoning the group.
On the other hand he might feel as if he can no longer trust anyone even remotely associated with that side. He might want to flee back to his birth family because it’s ‘safer’.
He might feel several of these things at once: that he can’t trust people on this side anymore- but that’s irrational, he loves his friends he really does, and he’s not a traitor. He’s not.
This is part of what I mean when I say that torture is a complex topic. Survivors are subject to some very irrational feelings and they may well be aware that they’re irrational but this does not make the feelings go away.
They are also making a lot of rational assessments about a very extreme situation. And they may not be able to easily judge the difference.
It can pull people in different directions. And the indecision can make things feel much worse.
Which means he might react to his friends as if he can’t trust them. Or he might react to them as if he still trusts them just as much. Or a dozen points in between.
If you picked anxiety or hypervigilance as one of his symptoms he might flinch away from his friends, even if he trusts them and feels like that reaction is ‘wrong’.
Not all of this is rational, and that is normal.
Similarly the way people act after torture (that is after they are safe) can vary hugely.
Some people describe withdrawing, especially if they’re experiencing depression. Some people dissociate. Some people get angry or even aggressive. Some become incredibly anxious or fearful. Sadness about what happened to them. Happiness that it’s over, if they believe it is-
But mostly? Torture survivors experience a range of feelings in the immediate aftermath as they try to come to terms with what happened to them. Feeling most of the things I’ve listed above at various points during the first few days afterwards would be pretty normal.
Torture doesn’t cut people off from the full range of human emotions. And that means that there are a lot of different ways people can act.
I would suggest trying to read survivor accounts and trying to root any response you come up with in the character’s personality and the symptoms you’ve chosen for him.
You could try searching Amnesty International’s website for interviews. I’d suggest trying to concentrate on interviews that discuss more then just the torture these people lived through, because the aim is to get a more holistic view of their lives.
You could also try Alleg’s The Question and Monroe’s A Darkling Plain.
As for whether he could help people- Well it depends on the kind and extent of help you’re imagining and the symptoms you’ve chosen.
A lot of survivors have to work after they’re released. Otherwise they would starve. This is not right and most of them struggle but that doesn’t make them incapable.
Survivors who invested a lot of their identity in their work, who find meaning in it, often want to return to it immediately. Off the top of my head I can think of artists, singers, activists and doctors who all expressed a strong desire to get back to their work.
And the majority of them did. Not necessarily right away and they were not necessarily capable of everything they could do before. But they continued to do what they loved.
Survivors are typically not as good at dealing with a lot of stress and high pressure situations. And as far as possible they shouldn’t be put in those sorts of situations, where their mental health problems are likely to become… painful.
One of the things that seems to come up a lot with survivors who invest a lot of themselves in their work is burnout. They try to cope with their mental health problems by focusing on work and drive themselves too hard. Then things get worse.
Sometimes that can become something of a cycle.
There are also some symptoms that make mistakes on the job more likely. Insomnia and addiction can be particularly dangerous in that regard. Memory problems can cause issues but I get the impression the issues they cause are typically less… life threatening.
If you meant ‘help’ in the sense of emotional support though- I personally do not think that it should be left to survivors to help other survivors heal.
It puts a lot of pressure on people who are already struggling in the name of taking pressure off people who can cope with that pressure… better. I don’t think that’s fair. I think it hurts a lot of survivors.
Survivors can give each other, and non-survivors, emotional support. But people who aren’t trained as therapists can’t really be expected to take that role because they’re mentally ill.
So it depends on what kind of help you want the character to give, how stressful it would be and for how long.
He would still be capable of acting as a doctor. But asking him to pull a 12 hour shift in an emergency room is asking for a meltdown.
In a sensible world he’d be allowed several weeks of recovery and eased back into work gradually, in as stress-free a way as possible.
That isn’t always what happens. Sometimes because the survivor themselves wants to go faster then they can cope with.
Wrapping this up: think about the symptoms you’ve picked for your character. Establish them early. Link them to the way your character behaves, around his friends, around work, around everyday life.
Think about his values and beliefs. Think about what, aside from the ‘side’ he’s on, is at the heart of his identity.
And read survivor accounts. They will help you get a better sense of what’s possible and what you’re trying to describe.

okay kids strap in this is gonna be long probably. im gonna add a read more so hopefully that works, otherwise i am,,so sorry,,
w that lets begin
so. lets start w the basics
season 1: didnt like him. really didnt like him. i have Issues w suicide as a topic in general so when he baited midoriya he lost any fondness i couldve had towards him. then his actions durnig the battle training? hes a fcukin maniac. but i enjoyed learning more abt him as a character so whatever. i thought his confrontation w midoriya in the aftermath of that was,,interesting
season 2: still dont like him, but his eventual coming arnd during the final exam made me more open to him. also sports festival was,,,interesting, ig. i thought it was interesting how he wouldnt accept the win; if he was the same character he was in season 1, he wouldve taken it, i feel like. but he didnt. so hey, growth smwh
season 3: i thought i didnt like him, but then he got kidnapped and i got a case of the shakes(tm) until he was rescued. i rlly vibed w midoriya screaming and crying while he was kidnapped. cut to the provis license exam:
(excuse my crying abt aoyama lmao)(and also the fact that i used to call bakugou “bakugon” yes i know thats not his name yes i did that bc i didnt like him and i think im funny as shit). then,,,the scene. kacchan v. deku 2. uhh i was vibing w him honestly. hes a mood,,,regrettably,,,until he beat midoriya at least
season 4 (so far): pls stop yelling, regrettably relatable gremlin
now lets dive into what all that means huh
i dislike bakugou for the following reasons.
- suicide-baited midoriya. not only that, but he tormented him for years simply because he couldn’t get over his own private feelings; midoriya did nothing to deserve his scorn. literally nothing.
- beyond even that, is still a prick to most everyone he meets; he’s short and irritated and won’t give anyone the benefit of the doubt (at least not as first).
- even now, he still has issues giving respect or even just being decent to both people he knows and people he doesn’t.
- speaking of, he has never ever apologized for his previous actions. not even after he finds out he’s wrong (like when midoriya tells him he never, ever, looked down on him). he hasnt even really apologized via action rather than words if you wanna try that route with me. he might be better than he was, but he refuses to acknowledge that he was ever wrong in the first place and thats not functional
- hes so focused on “winning” as a concept. it doesnt matter if youre supposed to be an ally to him; if he perceives you as being in his way, he’ll do his damnedest to fucking destroy you. he has few genuinely heroic qualities (not to say he has few good qualities, just few heroic ones); hes just strong and determined, but he’s a case study of how those qualities can be twisted as all fucking hell
- hes so proud. he is s o fucking proud. he has such an issue with pride that i cant fucking handle it sometimes man
i like bakugou for the following reasons.
- he has grown. he might not have said anything to anyone about it, but he has grown as a person since the series started
- he does have morals and he sticks to them. they might be basic things such as “dont be a villain” but theyre. something and he stands by them. hes not a slimy snake is what im saying
- hes funny. when he isnt actively bringing others down, i actually enjoy the screentime he has, bc its really funny, esp when he’s interacting w his friends and theyre having visible fun messing arnd w him
- this particular reason is hard to phrase so let me just. try and word vomit it correctly. i didnt expect him to be capable of blaming himself for smth like all might’s retirement. but he was and i,,,it adds layers to his character that i appreciate a lot. so its not that i like that he feels guilty abt it, but what it means for his character
- his interactions with kirishima. its proof that he’s learning how to be better, slowly but surely, and how to care about others properly. its sweet, genuinely and wholeheartedly
- hes not always rewarded by the narrative, and that makes him much more human to me, which i really appreciate. the biggest example i can think of is that he didn’t pass his provisional license exam on the first try. i think he’s gonna have a low point eventually, but hopefully, from there, he tries to build his way out into a better life as a better person

its just...very complex. he reminds me of myself, or at least a person i used to be. he actually reminds me of a couple combinations of ppl i used to be; just like bakugou, ive had smth similar to both a superiority and an inferiority complex in the past so its djkfjkdjnk,,,regrettably relateable,,,,,,not at the same time like he does but yknow the feeligns and how they clash are still there
but yeah. its bc he reminds me of myself i both hate him and like him.
like he reminds me of aspects abt myself i h a t e. i have issues w pride, i used to be a huge jerk (not to the degree he was, thank god, but i have a conscious now so when im reminded of how i used to be in like elementary school, i feel ashamed and since bakugou hasnt fucking,,,acknowledged,,the abuse he put midoriya through yet,,i get angry with him)
and the one guilt episode we saw him have reminded me of a very dark time in my life (2016) and its just. oh no. so thats where the anger fizzles out because i cant hate that more than i just feel pity abt it
in contrast, its bc he reminds me of things i hate abt myself that i have high hopes for him. i crawled out of the hole i was in; i made it through the stages of being a prick and then being thrust into a guilt-induced depression. im certainly not a good person, but im much better than i was
so just,,im already proof that ppl can change, but,,,,if i had a character to cling to when doubt came creeping in, i think that wouldve be great. i know im not the only one that feels like this. if bakugou can make the right turnaround, i think he could mean a lot to a bunch of people, me included
obviously the turnaround would have to be done right (and he better fucking beg for midoriya’s forgiveness) but i have hope that it can be
he has a long way to go, both in action and in word. but i am hopeful for his development. he reminds me of many things i hate about myself, but also to push on despite those things. my feelings about him are complicated due to that

karma. criminally insane fallen angel demon corrupted entity hellbent on ruining lives for the pure fun of it. revenge and pain and hatred personified trapped in a delusional ig influencer weaboo girl
Maalik. dude psychologically torments ppl w the express goal of killing or corrupting them so he can use their soul as sustenance. and hes actually good at his job hes just lazy as all hell and does only the bare minimum. confirmed to have done this to thousands of people
evil ruby. an actual demonic force possessing a dead girl’s body in order to destroy a town. pretty icky.
corbin. serial manipulator who has dated/befriended/just stalked and killed multiple ppl purely bc he has a power complex. killed susannah after emotionally abusing her for weeks and then simply carried on to find his next target.
christian. kidnaps and tortures an actual angel with no mercy and actually finds it enjoyable. evil scientist who wants to figure out the secrets of angels/god/heaven/religion. doesnt value human lives at all, and has absolutely no problem torturing somebody and keeping them in captivity. he’d kill and dissect adrien in an instant if he wasnt useful as a lab rat by being the only one of his kind on earth and able to talk
Justice. Egomaniac who will do whatever and kill whoever she needs to in order to survive, and most importantly, control everyone around her.
corinne. long-time abuser. emotionally, physically, mentally and verbally. shames josiah for many things, including his fathers abuse, his abandonment of his mother, his medication reliance, his many past suicide attempts, his mental health, his emotional outbursts, his self harm history and continuation, his lack of success, lack of wealth, and suffering self esteem. constantly hits him and screams at him, taunting him to hit her so he’ll be like his dad and she’ll get him arrested, calling him weak and a coward when he doesn’t. hangs rent and his living situation over his head. doesnt have any sort of romantic feelings for him at all whatsoever anymore but keeps him around for the dynamic. threatens agnes as well, even when she doesn’t even know her. is generally all-around shitty, manipulative, and self centered.
chisme. kills ppl bc she has to. she also has a huge amount of fun doing it, but mostly because she gets to make ppl fucking lose it and thinks its entertaining plus she gets their souls when they become corrupted. not purposefully malicious, but is definitely self-aware
cecilia. murderer and liar. overall her reasons for killing stem from an inferiority complex that she percieves as a superiority complex and a higher sense of justice than everyone else. believes she does the right things, even if shes a bad person.
malady. house demon. just a really really angry house demon that wants to eat people. probably evil but eh
keith. not actually a bad person, he just does shit towards the end of it thats bad. abandons his boyfriend that he dragged into his search for an eldritch abomination, unwittingly becoming the real danger through his actions. directly leads his ex bf into the path of danger then SHOOTS HIM. and dies.

It's pathetic really, hating on the BakuDeku shippers.
First of all, this is just my own opinion on the hate on the shippers and not on the actual ship.
Browsing through tags and such. I happen to see a huge amount of hate on the ship. That's normal. All kinds of ship gets that. People will always find why a certain ship is wrong. No ship is perfect. It all has flaws and why it's problematic.
What I have issues are the direct insult to the shippers themselves for liking a very complicated/problematic pair.
Some are claiming those who ship them have never been bullied or abused? You know who was abused? THIS PERSON RIGHT HERE. I was mentally, physically and sexually abused by my classmates (mentally) and by an exboyfriend (physical and sexual for 5 fucking years). So don't fucking claim you know these people who ship Bakudeku. You don't know what they have been through the same way as they don't know you.
You know why I like that fucking ship despite their ugly start? Because the mother fucking character development. Because Deku is finally standing up against Bakugou. Because Katsuki is finally seeing Izuku as someone who is strong. Because there is history and conflict. BECAUSE IT'S NOT SUNSHINE AND RAINBOWS. It's a huge clusterfuck of drama that needs a lot of fucking time, redemption and forgivenes before it becomes a fucking healthy relationship. No one who ships this is an idiot who thinks Bakugo is forgivable the way he is now. But sure, PEOPLE DONT CHANGE RIGHT? PEOPLE DONT DESERVE TO CHANGE? Cause with how all of you diss on Bakugou, it's like he is this huge asshole who can't change for the fucking better. Like he can't fucking realize he was wrong his whole life. Fuck that right? It's not and never had been about abuse that makes this fucking ship beautiful. It's about these fucking two boys who had a fuckinh toxic relationship growing into one of the best heroes there is, all the while learning how wrong or how to forgive. A Toxic and problematic relationship can be saved, he worked out and can be turned into a healthy one as long as it gets to be worked out. They are still young impressionable boys. Both are some how guided by All Might and was said that they'll turn into a great duo of heroes.
But you know what? You can hate on the ship. When I made this post I don't want to defend Bakudeku because people will fucking see what they what to see. I went out of tangent because like any shippers, I am also protective of it. You can hate it. That is your right. You know what's not cool? YOU INSULTING PEOPLE WHO SHIP THEM LIKE YOU KNOW EACH AND EVERYONE OF THEM PERSONALLY JUST BECAUSE THE LIKE A PROBLEMATIC SHIP.
JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE BITTER DOESNT MEAN ALL OF US HAVE TO BE. Just cause you are not fucking open about people that can change for the better (especially a fictional character) doesn't mean we don't have to. Just because you allude your bullies to Kacchan means all abused victims will too. Just because the abusive start of Katsuki and Izuku's relationship (non romantically) triggers you doesn't mean all of us does. You don't get to speak for all of us. You have all the rights to hate the ship, keep the shippers out of it. You can keep youself away from it if it triggers you, I understand that. No one likes being reminded. But you don't get to force and insult people who like the said pairing.
It doesn't matter who you are or what you have been through, we all don't know each other personally. Insulting people because of fictional characters are a lot more disgusting. You are no better than your bullies for assuming about other people's lives.
Co-Bakudeku/KatsuDeku shippers. Some of you, stop insulting them personally too. Ship wars is ship wars. You battle with facts and opinion about the pairing but never insult someone. I know I am not known in this fandom, only my friends know how hardcore I ship this pairing. I am more of a quiet shipper. Don't be Bakugou Katsuki of manga chapter one. Be Midoriya Izuku of the current arc who forgave and understands Kacchan more now.
Kacchan is far for a decent person right now but he's getting there. His character is still developing, still changing. He's a huge ass bully but he's also my favorite character because he is complex. He's a character who's sense of right and wrong is still shaky. Unstable and has a lot of issues with his personality (anger management and superiority complex to name a few). He is a flawed character.

Don't bother sending me asks or reblogs just to tel me why I shouldn't ship them, that I am disgusting or a liar. God forbid someone sends me a message or reblog about how should I feel about it as an abuse victim. No there is no written manual on how one should feel when abused so please save yourself some time, and just reflect on why insulting each other is bad. Insult the ship, you hate it for a reason but never the person.
I am a firm believer of letting people ship what ever they want to ship. If it's promblematic or you have issues about it, ask them why in a polite way to understand why the like it. Tell them why you don't. Have a healthy discussion about it without it getting personal or insulting each other. Then after that agree that you both have different views, differnet opinions and different likes. No it doesn't mean the other is disgusting, abusive or wrong. You are just different from them. Grow up.
Now if this have been a real life situation and not a fictional one, then all bets are off, real life abuse is different than fictional. :) Fiction is not real life. You can relate, see yourself or learn from it. Morals, values and opinions within a fictional world will and forever be not the same as ours as these are imaginary. They are controlled by an author who can change the rules of the characters lives anyway they like. Fictions stays fiction for a reason. They are not real. These are not real people. These are characters that you may have connected to but are still not real.
I can give you a lot of characters who are wrong/abusive/bully who within the series have changed and turned into great characters. BNHA is far from over. A lot of things can happen. So really, stop assuming the worst about people for liking something different from what you believe in.

Idk if you already answered this but, why do you like bakugo?? I'm not trying to judge, I'm just genuinely curious cuz I personally think he's a horrible person after the way he treated Midoriya and told him to kill himself. Not to say Bakugo doesn't have the potential to become a better person, cuz everyone makes mistakes, but rn it doesn't seem like he's trying at all to be better and it seems like he doesn't regret the horrible things he did to Midoriya. I mean, he's complex, but idk...
OH GOLLY GOSH okay i think i can do this! for one i do 100% agree he has done some really seriously bad stuff and i very much hope he one day can acknowledge it that way but thats all just me daydreaming in headcanon land.
hm, i would actually disagree, i don’t think he’s entirely irredeemable and i do think he’s trying to be better! i don’t think he really knows how and there’s not really anyone stepping up to the plate as a good mentor for him (all might doesn’t quite get how to help him i dont think). i also think he’s NEVER had that sort of support from any adults, since every time we’ve seen adults speak to bakugou as a child they’ve only ever told him that he’s great/cool/full of promise. he’s also got that ~gifted child~ complex that you get from growing up like that, which explains (though doesnt justify) why his sense of self worth is so challenged by midoriya offering him help. at the end of the day I think he’s still a young kid who hasn’t really learned how much gravity his words can carry yet, but he’s still totally committed to making the world a better/safer place by becoming the best hero and i don’t think thats for nothing!
at least on the manga side, i think he’s grown a whole lot actually! obviously his relationship with kirishima is important bc kiri is the first person he sees as an equal rather than a threat to his self-worth, but he has also slowly started helping/working with other people too (mostly kaminari and kirishima). he also does offer midoriya advice as well which i think was a hugely important moment!
anyways the really key thing here is that bakugou has done shitty things that havent just been excused away but at no point does the narrative ever make him out to be a bad person or defined wholly by those things! instead we are given a deeper explanation of why he is such a shitball than simply saying “he is just a mean person” which makes his actions interesting rather than just fshock value. i think bakugou is a really neat and tightly written character on a meta level, and on a personal level i find his crazy intense superiority/inferiority complex to be very Relatable!! dont feel bad for not being on the bkg hype train since like he is maybe a little difficult to have empathy for but i am a sucker for complicated characters /shrug

ok sure most of palpatine’s grand plan was political.
so what if HE was only a politician? no new sith lords in tpm - wui gon lives and probably teaches anakin. since palpatine’s not a sith lord shopping for the perfect powerful and maniplable sith apprentice anakin DOESN’T get his special attention. so anakin’s relationship with the order is less strained than canon but. still very strained.
what else changes in palpy’s plans? well i kinda think he still allies with dooku - originally he doesn’t intend to kill him but it does come into his plans because it’s obvious the man is never going to consider an alliance with a non-sensitive as equal. so dooku’s death is still more or less programmed. probably the droid army is also programmed to turn on him just as the clones are overridden to turn on teh jedi.
but ARE the clones programmed to turn on the jedi? maybe. but for a non-sith!palpy it’s just a contingency. after all he gets into power legitimately - do teh jedi turn on him still? maybe maybe not but it’s a necessity for him to get rid of them as it is for canon!sidious. order 66 is probably still programmed in the chips i think.
anyway since the clone wars happens the same way -minus fake kidnapping attempt of the Chancellor checking to see how his corruption of the Chosen One is going - it also starts the same way - ie Padme and Anakin STILL get married.
...maybe he does still have a close relationship with anakin, but he’s not trying to corrupt him to the dark side? h initially really just checked on the kid who thwarted the naboo invasion, but then he sees an opportunity? someone with force sensitivity being loyal to him above the jedi could be useful. plus if he molds him earlu enoough he won’t have that pesky superiority complex that is so annoying in dooku. And he could protect him from teh jedi should they decide to do a coup when it becomes obvious tahthe’s intending to become emperor... and like in canon they’re doing half his job of alienating young anakin
still since the sith are dead in this AU, i’m pretty sure neitehr dooku nor anakin fall? dooku 100% went Dark out of wanting power and feeling sidious gets him, so he’s probably. just an asshole ex-jedi but not dark nor fallen (look he just. has too much control over his emotions to fall by accident). Meanwhile fallen!anakin would be dangerous to non-sith!palpy, which he probably realises early in empire years if canon is more or less the same. he probably uses what’s left of teh trust anakin has in him to help him stabilise in a not-fallen state (though anakin is probably going to be rather too dark to be a jedi)
IF that happens. which is not sure because. Padme is probably not going to die? non-sith!palpy has to resort to conflicting loyalties to get anakin on board here - the jedi decides that nope, the senat doesnt have th rigth to appoint an emperor (which i hope it doesn’t but who knows) and proceed to start a military coup (they WERE thinking about it in canon before thy found out he was the sith master); which anakin, full of conflicting loyalties, gets in the way of, with help by the brain-washed clones. ok but, what is padme doing meanwhile? is that loyalty conflict -as long with the part where paly as legality if not legitimity on his corner - enough to turn him on the jedi? enouigh to provide protection for palpy, maybe, butwithout the threaton padme’s lif not enough to send him slaughtering the order and th youngling. no way. suggesting it - or even oredering the clones to do it - would go too far to keep him by his side.
but once again - no-sith!palpy is not trying to exterminate teh jedi. he’s completely on board with having them be his personal military force. so, exterminating teh leaders and threatening the otehr? indocrtinating teh younger ones so tey would follow him and spy on th rest? i think h can actually spin it in an acceptable wya to anakin;
but once again, taht’s if padme’s out of the pictur. but a dead padme has such an huge impact on anakin’s psyche - there’s too much of a chnce he would devote himself to her ideals and he knows she wouldn’t stand for this;
no i don’t think he can manage to turn anakin on the jedi. he might though keep an eye on the situation through the years to see if it’s possible - then decide thatit’s not worth it;
...well a non-sith!palpy might not be aware of anakin and padme’s marriage.hm. so he might miscalculate here due to padme’sinfluence on anakin - maybe? he is very prceptive the first time he realizes that someone is fighting his words to anakin who’s not a je di he’z going to know somethin’s up and a regular investigation will tell him what it is.
(also of course a non-sith!palpy means that the Force is unclouded. that probably changes a lot on the jedi side...)
yeah no i’m pretty sure a non-sith!palpy works if he doens’t try to turn anakin. he dies with the rest of the jedi in order 66, he gets declared emperor because he baited them into attacking him like in canon but his defense is brainwashed clones, , dooku after capture before he could spill the beans (he thought he was going to get rescued i guess), and padme gets to raise her children outside of the vue of the empire. maybe on tatooine but i don’t think she would give up on the republic?
anyway while most of palpy’s plan is political thtere’s a ot of key elements (ven taking anakin’s corruption out) thatdo rly on thehim being a sith i think... (mostly what to do with the jedi. how can he control his alliance with dooku.
...or maybe he doesn’ bother with dooku? he can have direct contact with the separistwithout involving a stuck up arrogant ex-jedi who ends up being more troubl than he’s worth. yeah. since ‘how does he get rid of dooku’ is a problem when you take anakin’s out.
of course teh jedi are stillnot going to take his power play well. plus with the Force unclouded they’re probably much more able to fight back.
...maye instead of his nd move getting rid of them is much more of an opening move. hm)

A few weeks ago, Dries Buytaert, founder of the popular open-source CMS Drupal, asked Larry Garfield, a prominent Drupal contributor and long-time member of the Drupal community, to leave the Drupal project. Buytaert (who is also co-founder and CTO of Acquia, a Drupal platform which has raised ~$175 million over the years and has been struggling to IPO for a few years now) retorts:
when a highly-visible community members private views become public, controversial, and disruptive for the project, I must consider the impact all people are created equally. [sic] I cannot in good faith support someone who actively promotes a philosophy that is contrary to this any association with Larrys belief system is inconsistent with our projects goals I recused myself from the Drupal Associations decision [to dismiss Garfield from his conference role] Many have rightfully stated that I havent made a clear case for the decision I did not make the decision based on the information or beliefs conveyed in Larrys blog post.
Sigh. This sad mess is something of a perfect storm of Code of Conduct conflicts. It is one which raises a number of interesting questions. It also raises several quite boring ones, so lets get them out of the way:
Does this matter? (Isnt this just prurient clickbait?)
Is it OK for an open-source community to ban/ostracize a member for being involved in BDSM, or other forms of unconventional but consensual adult sexual behavior?
More generally, is it OK for an open-source community to ban/ostracize a member purely because their belief system perhaps better described as a complicated fantasy milieu in which they happen to spend their personal time was doxxed?
These questions are boring not because they are unimportant, but because the answers are so obvious: yes (no), hell no, and hell no.
Ill unpack the first: open-source communities/projects are crucially important to many peoples careers and professional lives cf the cornerstone of my career so who they allow and deny membership to, and how their codes of conduct are constructed and followed, is highly consequential.
I really, really hope I dont have to unpack the two hell nos. But in case I do, let me quote this excellent blog post from Nadia Eghbal:
In the past, Dries mightve kicked Larry out because BDSM is a threat to family values. Today, leaders like Dries kick Larry out because BDSM is a threat to gender equality. Unfortunately, the end result is the same Beliefs are not actions. We cannot persecute people for what they believe, no matter how much it disgusts us, and simultaneously maintain a free and open democracy If diversity is our dogma, call me spiritual, not religious. I still pray for the same things as you, but I wont be at the witch trials.
Which is brilliantly put and I hope settles the previous questions. However. The Garfield Situation also raises two questions which are far more complex and interesting:
Under what circumstances, and via what kind of due process, is it OK for communities to publicly condemn people for secret reasons?
Is it OK to ban/ostracize community members for (legal) behavior which occurs entirely outside the community?
Obviously sometimes organizational decisions have to be made based on information that must remain confidential, for legal or ethical reasons. But if youre making such a decision, you really have to do so in the right way. What is the right way?
Probably something close to the opposite of what Buytaert and the Drupal Association did. Even if their decision was correct, which currently seems at best suspect, their complete lack of process transparency, and Buytaerts vaguely worded hinting-without-really-saying-anything statement, makes it very hard to have any faith in it.
Their accusations are so vague nonexistent non-accusations, really that Dries & co. could surely have told the community substantially more (indeed, anything) about Garfields problematic behavior, if any, without revealing sensitive information. For instance, they could have said theyd received reports of threats, harassment, or coercion by Garfield, if any such reports existed. They have said nothing of the sort.
(For what its worth, a well-informed source of mine reports: Its worth noting that a handful of women who worked with Larry did not report harassment or abuse from him in the workplace. We cant know for sure if he committed offenses, but if there were allegations or even rumors of his mistreatment of women we would be having a very different conversation right now.)
They could also have cited which elements of the Drupal Code of Conduct he violated, if any. They have not done so but theyve expelled him anyhow. Isnt that Code of Conduct, and its associated Conflict Resolution Policy, supposed to be what dictates the rules of behavior and interaction in the community? Doesnt overruling that written code with arbitrary decisions made for secret reasons reveal that in practice it is an irrelevance with no actual weight or importance?
I reached out to Buytaert in the hope of clarification; he did not respond.
Its hard not to get the impression, from the little that we do know, and the manner in which it has been miscommunicated, that whats actually deemed unacceptable here is that Garfields kink has spilled outside of his personal life i.e. that his real sin is that he was doxxed. Which, as noted, is firmly in hell no territory.
It is of course entirely possible that this impression is incorrect, and that Buytaert and the Drupal Association have done the right thing. But they have offered no evidence, no arguments, and no reasons for their decision. It seems obvious to me that they have a moral obligation to their community to do so. You cant ban people without at least sketching the outline of what it is they did wrong. Just trust us is not enough
especially since it also seems possible that the CTO and co-founder of a heavily funded pre-IPO company has participated in expelling a man from what his been his professional community for the last twelve years, ignoring that communitys own Code of Conduct and Conflict Resolution Policy, because it was decided he was guilty of, essentially, thoughtcrime; that no real accusations have been made, and no allegations of problematic behavior have been cited, because none such exist.
A third plausible scenario, based on the tea leaves of Buytaerts phrase actively promotes, is that Garfield has been banned for expressing views outside the Drupal community which are deemed unacceptable inside. This is not a new issue in the open-source world: I wrote about it last year, in the context of Curtis Yarvin and Opalgate:
Should communities accept people who hold repugnant views, as long as they dont express them within that community? Or should they be expelled, because its assumed that their views influence their community work in a negative way, or because their presence makes other people feel unsafe?
Personally, both answers make me feel deeply uneasy. Humans are messy, complex, and contradictory; human interactions are that squared; the results are so complex and context-sensitive that they often need to be judged on a case-by-case basis, rather than by any hard-and-fast rule.
although in those cases, the views in question were clearly expressed publicly, not privately, and were not intended as part of any BDSM fantasy world. Does that apply here? Who knows? Certainly not the Drupal community.
Its impossible to judge the Garfield situation, because all we are permitted to know is that it has been prejudged for us, by people who refuse to tell us anything about either their evidence or their decision process. It is, however, very easy to judge whether the people who have made and communicated this decision are, by the way they have done so, actually serving their community. And that answer is, once again, Im sorry to say: hell no.
