HiPOD 22 Jun 2023: An Interesting Scene in Juventae Chasma
This image shows dark-toned, windblown sand that surrounds these mounds and yardangs. Other landforms in the area might be possible inverted stream channels? Fans? Odd layer expressions? Our goal is to try to deepen our understanding of the sedimentary rock record and geomorphic history recorded in Juventae Chasma, by looking at areas that are not the famous mounds.

[CN] MLQC Lucien’s Twilight Date translation
⚠️ SPOILER ALERT!! ⚠️
This post contains a detailed  spoiler for a story that has not been released in EN yet! Feel free to  notify me if there are any mistakes in the translation~
Tumblr media
✧ Birthday Story | Birthday Prologue | Birthday Date (You’re here!)
(T/N: I, like this date a bit too much so I decided to subtitle it :”D. You can find the video + subtitle here on youtube. And don’t forget to turn on the CC!)
Tumblr media
The indigo sky covered the mountains at distance, and tents were scattered in twos and threes on the grass.
As I raised the tent and walked out, I heard laughter mixed with Italian words.
The tall figure in front of me is sitting on a picnic sheet, surrounded by the laughter of tourists in the distance, yet his back still reveals a touch of silence.
This scene was so beautiful that I had to take out my camera and record the moment in front of me.
After putting away the camera, I walked to Lucien, sat down, and looked at him from the side.
MC: What are you looking at? You seem so fascinated.
Lucien's gaze moved from the distance to my face, curving his eyes.
Tumblr media
Lucien: I'm trying to identify the shape of the volcano in the distance so that I can infer past geomorphic movements.
MC: Geomorphic movement? Is it there in front of us?
Lucien nodded gently. I followed his line of sight and also looked at the distant mountains. Grey and black mountain's shadows are like the hidden castle, still standing after the change of time
MC: And what did Professor Lucien's research study show?
I looked at Lucien, and he shook the manual in his hand.
Lucien: It's not a research study. If you're curious, check out this handbook for a more detailed description.
MC: But I want to hear what Professor Lucien has to say~
Tumblr media
I cupped Lucien's face to look at him. He chuckled softly and spoke in a low voice, complying with the night breeze.
Lucien: Located on the east coast of Naples, Mount Vesuvius has been named "Europe's most dangerous volcano".
Lucien: It lay dormant for many centuries but suddenly erupted in 719 AD, destroying the then-ancient city of Pompeii.
Tumblr media
MC: At that time, no one in Pompeii could have imagined that it would suddenly erupt...
MC: I feel that many changes happen so suddenly, as if there is always an accident, even if you try to prevent it.
In front of us, Vesuvius is quietly hidden in the night, with no trace of its eruption.
MC: What is the best thing to do in the face of an accident…?
Tumblr media
Lucien: In the face of unknown forces, we still have much to learn.
Lucien: This includes a calm and open attitude to face the situation.
Lucien's voice is light. It seems that no matter what time, he is always so gentle and calm, as if even if anything happens, as long as he is by my side, there is no need to be afraid.
Suddenly a night wind blew. I shivered and leaned against Lucien's arms.
Lucien put his chin on my shoulder and took me in his embrace, and his warm breath wrapped me intimately.
I suddenly remembered tomorrow's itinerary and looked up at Lucien.
Tumblr media
MC: As much as we wanted to visit Pompeii, we didn't have the time for that.
MC: I don't know why, but at the end of every year, you'll have international academic conferences to attend….
Tumblr media
Lucien: To borrow a classmate's remark, is it probably because there is always extra work at the end of the year?
He looked at me, the night breeze blowing through his hair and revealing his long, narrow, smiling eyes.
He didn't seem worried that the trip would disrupt his upcoming birthday; instead, he was in the mood to tease me, making me narrow my eyes and move closer to him.
Tumblr media
MC: You don't sound worried about not making it back to Loveland City. Professor Lucien, you haven't forgotten our agreement, have you?
Tumblr media
Lucien: How could I forget the agreement to spend my birthday with you at our home this year?
Tumblr media
He smiled faintly, and the vast night in the distance coalesced behind him as if the wilderness also softened because of his smile.
Lucien: I trust your arrangement.
Lucien: After all, everything you do on this day is a surprise to me.
After more than ten hours of flight, we finally returned to Loveland City in the early morning of Lucien's birthday
Because he still had work to do, we headed to the Research Centre first after getting off the plane.
Tumblr media
Pete: Professor? Why did you come back so early?
I didn't expect to meet Pete, and when he saw me and Lucien, his eyes widened in surprise, but Lucien didn't give him time to be surprised.
Tumblr media
Lucien: I read your experiment report, but the results don't seem to be satisfactory.
Lucien: Is the second experiment currently underway?
Pete was stunned and promptly nodded his head. Lucien gave a slight hum, then turned his head to look at me, and I waved at him understandingly.
Tumblr media
MC: You go ahead. I'll wait for you in the office.
When he touched my smile, Lucien's expression also softened for a moment. He turned around and followed Pete out of the corridor.
I also walked to the familiar route of Lucien's office and waited.
Tumblr media
There is no difference between this place and before I left, except the green plants on the windowsill drooping and seem to be a bit wilted.
MC: I remember where the nutrients at… Found it!
I skillfully took out the nutrient from the bottom drawer of the desk, carefully dropped a few drops, and then watered them a bit.
After a lot of work, the leaves of the green plants slowly stretched open, and the original dark green also showed a touch of brightness.
Tumblr media
MC: Well~ this has made the office livelier… Eh?
I was looking over my work with satisfaction when I suddenly noticed a buried report in the drawer.
The exposed corner bears a familiar name - "Experiment Participant: Lucien".
Curious, I gently pulled it out.
MC: …"A study of neuronal responses in the brain regarding intimate partner - based on neuroimaging".
Intimate partner experiment? When did Lucien take part in this kind of experiment? Just as I was wondering, I heard the door being pushed open.
Lucien: Is MC interested in this?
I looked up to see Lucien walking towards me.
MC: Why are you back so soon? Is the experiment over?
Tumblr media
Lucien: The essential parts are already done, so I'll leave the rest to Pete.
As he said that, his eyes moved to the report, I was holding, and I pointed to his name on it.
MC: What kind of report is this? How can you be a participant in the experiment?
He curled his lips as if he knew what I was wondering.
Tumblr media
Lucien: This is a derivative study of a previous experiment I conducted on emotional recognition in relation to brain damage.
Lucien: This experiment explores the deeper factors in the human brain that produce intimate feelings.
Lucien: However, due to the complexity of the brain's deep wiring, hormones alone cannot fully explain humans 'addictive behavior' towards other people or things.
He paused as if suddenly thinking of something and lifted his wrist to check the time.
Lucien: …It's already noon, and we seem to have spent too much time at the Research Centre.
Lucien: I don't think I've disrupted your birthday plans, have I?
I shook my head and looked at Lucien with a smile.
Tumblr media
MC: You don't disrupt anything, and it's your birthday, so you can do whatever you want.
Lucien's eyes curled at my words, and he took my hand.
Tumblr media
Lucien: If I can do anything, then I want to go home with you now.
Lucien: Today, I want to know what surprises you have in store for me more than I want to experiment.
MC: A certain Great Professor seems to be looking forward to it?
I raised my eyebrows and gazed at Lucien.
Lucien: I admit that I'm looking forward to it.
Lucien: When I was in Naples, I looked forward to it on the flight back to Loveland.
Tumblr media
Lucien: Because you will always exceed all my expectations with your ability to make my day so special and beautiful.
My heart stirred, my eyes accidentally glanced at the report on the table, and I couldn't help but mysteriously look at him.
Tumblr media
MC: I think this year's gifts should still be worthy of your expectations.
MC: And perhaps this gift will give you the answer to the riddle!
MC: As for what it is, you'll find out at home.
Tumblr media
When he passed by the bottom of the building, Lucien checked the mailbox with his hand and took out something.
My mind wandered, I could probably guess what he had taken, but I quietly pushed that curiosity down.
(T/N: their postcard from last year's b-day 🥺)
The top priority now is to reveal my "surprise" to Lucien.
When we got out of the lift and arrived at the door, I turned to Lucien.
Tumblr media
MC: Lucien, can you close your eyes now?
MC: Wait until I say it is ready before you open your eyes ~ I don't want you to lose the sense of surprise at first sight.
Lucien was so amused by me that he couldn't resist chuckling. He looked at me and slightly ducked his head.
Tumblr media
Lucien: In general, maintaining a certain expectation level prolongs the surprise duration.
Lucien: Not to mention that it's a surprise you've prepared for me, which I would gladly prolong the anticipation of.
Tumblr media
He closed his eyes as he said this, as if he was being "ravaged" by me while I stood on my tiptoes and covered his eyes.
Tumblr media
After entering, I pushed Lucien to sit on the sofa and started to prepare for work while glancing at Lucien.
MC: No peeking out!
The first thing I did was take a look at the projector. I put my mind at ease, hurriedly turned on the Bluetooth speaker, and set up the projector.
Just as I opened the lid of the aromatherapy stone and carefully added a few drops of the liquid, I suddenly heard Lucien's voice speaking out behind me.
Lucien: ...It's the smell of glaciers.
Tumblr media
I turned my head in surprise, but Lucien was still sitting on the sofa with his eyes closed, yet the curvature of his lips had deepened a little.
MC: You can smell it?
He nodded softly, his voice unhurried, mingling with the white noise of the rain.
Lucien: The smell reminds me of when we watched the aurora borealis together in Northern Europe.
Lucien: The memories here… are so profound that it is easy to distinguish them.
Tumblr media
MC: I asked a colleague who went on a trip to Scandinavia to bring it back with her. How come I can't smell it, damn it...
MC: As expected, you are really impressive!
Lucien gently laughs and precisely holds my hand, his tone soft.
Tumblr media
Lucien: Is that really impressive?
Lucien: What If I said I also know that the stereo is supposed to play the audio recording of the first autumn rain in Loveland City?
MC: How did you catch that?
My eyes widened in disbelief as I heard a soft laugh escape from Lucien's throat, his fingers warmly rubbing my hand.
Tumblr media
Lucien: It was a cold day, and a little girl who was afraid of the cold was cuddled up in my arms as we slept.
Lucien: There was the sound of a kitten meowing downstairs in the middle of the night. Do you remember?
I subconsciously nodded my head, and Lucien continued to speak as if sensing my movement.
Lucien: I just heard the sounds of the kitten that night on the stereo.
Lucien: Besides, after living there for so long, I am already familiar with the sound of the rain hitting the tree under our home.
I blinked gently as Lucien spoke without slowing down and watched him speak.
Tumblr media
MC: It seems you've already guessed part of the surprise I've prepared.
MC: But there's still a lot you haven't guessed, so now the birthday boy can open his eyes.
Tumblr media
In the next second, Lucien slowly opened his eyes with anticipation and looked at everything in front of him.
The black-and-white film projected on the curtain shows the first encounter between the princess and the journalist, a rendition of our shared memory of the "Roman Holiday".
The glass figures on the table are covered with many electronic fireflies, glowing as if we had released them in the woods long ago.
A thousand handmade paper cranes hang by the bookshelf, and the warm sunshine falls on their wings, showing the traces of folded cranes we used to make together.
On the table is the wine from the winery, the year of production on it is as old as Lucien, carefully selected by me from the wineries we visited together.
The green mistletoe branches on the side are entwined with a strand of red thread, which we received together at the Matchmaker Temple.
The clear box in the center of the table covers a lavender cake featuring a sketch of the photo we took under the Bridge of Sighs last year…
Each gift carries a colorful past, like a treasure salvaged from the river of time, dazzling the room at that moment.
And these are the most unique gifts that belong to Lucien and me.
Tumblr media
Lucien: So this is… what you wanted to give me this year?
He chuckled again, and there seemed to be a small ripple in his tone.
Lucien: I remember that when you were preparing the gifts, you sent me to sleep next door.
Lucien: It was then I knew I would also receive a special surprise this year. But strangely enough, I couldn't help but be curious and look forward to it.
Tumblr media
MC: And may I ask the birthday boy if this expectation has been fulfilled?
Lucien: Well, it has been very fulfilling.
He said it with such frankness that I couldn't help but curl my lips and then give him another mysterious wink.
MC: I think it could've been more fulfilling.
MC: What you see now is not only this year's gift but also the answer to that riddle.
Lucien gave a slight pause, seemingly thinking of the discussion we had earlier in the office about experiments concerning emotions.
Tumblr media
Lucien: Do you mean the report that you saw in my office?
MC: At that time, you said that science could not precisely prove the influence of emotions.
MC: But since I don't know much about neuroscience, I think the answer is evident from a layman's point of view.
Tumblr media
MC: I think the most significant factor that affects relationships is memory.
MC: When we first met, you were 'Lucien, the neuroscience professor' to me and then 'my program consultant'.
MC: And then afterward… Anyway, it's an entirely different feeling now from what it was then.
Tumblr media
Lucien: How do you see me now?
My eyes skimmed over the incense, the film, the mistletoe one by one… and finally landed earnestly on Lucien's face.
MC: There are scents, temperatures, and the superimposed existence of many moments we have spent together.
Tumblr media
Lucien: I seem to understand what you're trying to say, but I'd still like to hear more about me from the MC's mouth.
Lucien's seemingly relentless pursuit made my heart beat faster, and I laughed as I picked up the white teapot on the table.
Tumblr media
MC: For example, when I see white tea, I will think of you reading a book…
MC: I can't help but feel happy when I think of all the stories we've read together;
MC: When I see the wisteria blooming on the road, I think of the dance that we did together;
MC: When I feel depressed, seeing the photo that we took together is like an infusion of happiness
MC: Keeping me warm whenever I need it.
MC: It is because of these objects that carry memories that I am able to keep warm at any time.
I put down the teapot and took Lucien's hand.
Tumblr media
MC: So I'm sure that the times we spent together in your memory will give you the same warmth.
MC: I want to construct these memories that make me feel warm and give them to you.
Lucien looked at me. Behind him, the projector cast a bright white light that reflected the fluctuations in his eyes.
Tumblr media
Lucien: I remember all the things you say.
Lucien: But it is precisely because I can remember everything that sometimes I don't know what to do with the important memories.
Lucien: But today, I seem to understand that those important memories should be kept within reach.
His eyes were full of mirth. I smiled and squeezed his palm, pretending to look for something.
Tumblr media
MC: I have another gift I want to show you, but gee, where did I put it…
Lucien: Why don't you go to the storage room if you don't have it in the living room?
MC: Um! Let's go there now!
I said this and pulled Lucien along, unable to resist the soft curl of my lips where he could not see.
Tumblr media
MC: Where is the thing...
I was fumbling around in the storage room when a metallic gleam suddenly slid off the cabinet and rolled to my side.
MC: This is… A trumpet?
I curiously picked it up, the trumpet was rusty and slightly torn at the base, and it looked as if it had been unused for a long time.
MC: I think the one you played before was silver…?
Lucien looked at the lustrous trumpet and was silent for a moment as if he remembered something.
Tumblr media
Lucien: When I went to Italy for a conference, I passed through a volcanic eruption.
Lucien: The crowd was scattered, and it seemed to have been abandoned in the panic, so I picked it up.
Lucien: But now it looks like I don't keep it in a safe and proper place either.
I thought about it, wiped the trumpet, and put it on the counter.
Tumblr media
MC: It's not too late to keep it safe~
MC: But have you ever seen a volcanic eruption before? I didn't hear you mention it in Naples.
Tumblr media
Lucien: I wasn't very impressed with the volcano at the time.
Lucien's eyes were muted. I moved a little closer to him and watched him speak.
MC: Or maybe the Gods of Fate had it in mind that the story of you and the volcano would be reserved for this year's Vesuvius and me!
With that, I placed the photo I had taken with Vesuvius alongside the trumpet.
Tumblr media
MC: In this way, the Lucien from five years ago and the MC from five years later have been "taped" to each other, and our memories have been reunited.
Lucien: How can the past be enough? The present Lucien also wants to blend with MC's memories at this moment.
(T/N: CUE BEAUTIFUL LUCIEN 5TH BIRTHDAY BGM, also VERY RECCOMENDED to hear CN dub, it's just *clenches fist* so soft 🥺)
Tumblr media
Lucien looked at me and came closer, gently nuzzling the tip of my nose. My ears flushed as I caught the familiar smile in his long, narrow eyes.
Tumblr media
MC: Only small animals like to nuzzle the tip of their noses together…
Lucien: But right now, aren't we in a world that is exclusively ours? Here, we can do whatever we want.
Lucien: For example… Enjoy the light and shadow show you want to show me.
MC: Oh yes, I almost forgot about the main event… Wait, how did you know that?!
Lucien's eyes rested on a bookshelf not far away, then quickly darted back and blinked.
Lucien: Sorry, what did I just say?
Lucien: I don't know anything. I'm still waiting for my surprise from MC.
Tumblr media
MC: Pfft...
I laughed at Lucien's attempt to play stupid, and then, on my tiptoes, I finally reached the remote control that turned on the "surprise".
The moment the remote control is pressed, a multitude of ethereal purple lights slowly emerge from the bookshelves.
Each glimmer of light is drawn as a fluttering butterfly, its wings fluttering as it rests on the spine of a different book.
The last butterfly landed on the brown spine, the dark light reflecting the stamped lettering, and I gently read the words on which the butterflies had rested.
Tumblr media
MC: “Happy birthday, Lucien.”
Until all the butterflies disappeared into the darkness, Lucien looked at me as if there were visions of butterflies in the depths of my eyes.
Lucien: It seems that every year you bring me a different kind of color and make me realize that there is so much beauty in the world.
I reached out my hand and slowly interlocked my fingers with Lucien's.
Tumblr media
MC: These beautiful things belong to us, and we have created them little by little.
MC: You know, I've had a lot of fun preparing gifts this year.
MC: It's as if I've gone through everything we've been through in the last five years.
MC: I see how I approach you and how you move toward me step by step.
MC: There's also some quarreling and spite, but in the end, we move towards each other as if there's gravity.
Lucien: Perhaps the attraction between people is an objective existence.
Lucien: Only this attraction has now increasingly grown into the time we spend together.
As the sun sank in the west, the light in the storeroom dimmed, and Lucien looked at me, his eyes as deep as twilight.
Tumblr media
Lucien: For example, the letters we wrote last year have also become a part of our lives this year.
Seemingly thinking the time was right, he took the letter out of his jacket and gazed at me.
Tumblr media
Lucien: MC, would you like to open this gift from across the ocean?
I nodded expectantly. Together with Lucien, I want to reveal our hearts which had traveled through time and come to us.
After exchanging the envelopes with each other's names on them, I opened them carefully and was struck by the words that met my eyes-
"No matter which way time flows, no matter how the world changes, I will always belong to you."
And at the moment Lucien unfolds the postcard in his hand, I hear a chuckle escape from his throat.
"I hope I can give Lucien the warmest birthday in the world at home next year!"
The two letters are spread out in the soft dusk light, quietly telling the traces of the passing year.
Tumblr media
MC: Happy birthday, Lucien.
MC: I hope your new year will be filled with more happiness and less worry. Smile more often and call me at home if you are unhappy.
Tumblr media
MC: Our home will always be there to help you fight your troubles.
I gave Lucien my blessing in earnest, and the next moment, he was lowering his head to my forehead, the tip of his nose touching mine, carrying the warmth of his breath.
Tumblr media
Lucien: As long as I have the time you give me, I will be happy wherever I am.
Lucien: That's why I want to keep extending this memory with you.
Lucien: Even if oceans and mountain cross each other, I’ll still want it to keep going.
Tumblr media
MC: So, Mr. Birthday Star, I suppose my wish from last year has come true this year?
I held the letter in my hands and looked at Lucien, his gentle voice descending into the melting dusk.
Tumblr media
Lucien: The moment you write it down, it's already been realized.
Tumblr media
[small ramble corner]
First of all, how dare you, PG, for always using the theme of ‘home’ in every Lucien’s birthday date and stories TAT. Every birthday always reminds us about the home he lost and the home he finally found. Everytime they said ‘our home’ I sobs a little.
If I could describe this date in two words, it would be warm and soft, just like the small world they created together. The contrast between him not really caring about his birthday from his birthday story and his anticipation for surprises from mc on this date is just :””. Before, he only considered his birthday as just another ordinary day, not expecting anything special to happen; But ever since he met MC, he began to look forward to it and even had some expectations. Big props to MC for always giving him (and us) the most heartwarming surprises every year. This year, those little objects that carried memories is a really lovely birthday gift and made me nostalgic about the money i spent about my memories with this game.
THE BGM!!! Not only the name (All things produce color) made me cry- But also, it really fits with the theme of “warmest birthday.” I felt emotional every time I hear that BGM, especially when paired with the CG :””. It gives of a feeling of cozy and warm autumn. Like huddling together in front the fireplace.... anyway, before I rambles too much, thank you, for reading this date ahah.

Why Scientists Fall for Precariously Balanced Rocks
“They’re nature’s hilarious accidents.”
Atlas Obscura -  Sabrina Imbler
On April 1, 1994, Paul Butcher, then the director of Colorado Springs parks department, received a chilling phone call from a frantic staff member. She told him that Balanced Rock—a 290-million-year-old red sandstone boulder naturally perched on a sloped ledge in Garden of the Gods Park—had fallen. Butcher panicked, his thoughts roiling with how disappointed and outraged both locals and visitors would be with the loss of the beloved, iconic landmark. He imagined the 700-ton boulder rolling downhill, with nothing to stop its tumble onto the nearby U.S. Highway 24, like a monstrously dense tumbleweed. Then he remembered the calendar, and realized it was a prank. “I never laughed,” Butcher, who is now retired, told  Out There Colorado. “It’s not a great joke.”
In a way, the mere existence of Balanced Rock also seems like a prank, either geological or cosmic. The enormous boulder looks like it had been photoshopped onto the landscape, or photographed mid-roll, or carefully placed by aliens. But it’s no hoax and there’s no sorcery to it. Rather it is a prime example of a whole category of geologic formations called “precariously balanced rocks”—PBRs, for short. They’re exactly what you might expect. “It’s a rock balanced on top of another rock,” says Mark Stirling, who studies PBRs at the University of Otago in New Zealand. And if you think Colorado Springs’ landmark ought to have a more imaginative name, see also:  Balanced Rock in Grand Junction,  Balanced Rock in Rocky Mountain National Park, and  Balanced Rock at the Rampart Range. And that’s just Colorado.
PBRs are more than just unusual geologic features—they’re a source of valuable scientific insight. They’re what are called “reverse seismometers” because their mere existence makes it possible to measure earthquakes that didn’t happen. If they’re still balanced, then the earth hasn’t moved enough to knock them over, at least in the last few thousand years, according to geologists David E. Haddad and J. Ramón Arrowsmith in their seminal 2011 report  Geologic and Geomorphic Characterization of Precariously Balanced Rocks. So scientists study them to understand a region’s seismic history and, subsequently, predict what might come in the future. “They’re nature’s hilarious accidents,” says Amir Allam, a geologist at the University of Utah.
PBRs are a subset of a larger category called “fragile geologic features,” Stirling says. This includes any kind of rock that doesn’t meet the precise standard of a detached boulder balancing on another boulder, such as hoodoos (a mushrooming rock attached to a tall spire pedestal) and glacial erratics (boulders transported by ancient glaciers to new resting places), which are also considered PBRs when they land on another, curved rock—or a few of them, like in the case of  Balanced Rock in New York’s Hudson Valley. Fragile geologic features also include other landforms, such as the  Punta Ventana arch in Puerto Rico that recently collapsed as a result of a series of earthquakes. Though they don’t fit neatly into PBR researchers’ equations, they can be used in the same way to assess past and future earthquakes, Stirling says.
PBRs often start their journeys deep underground. Large chunks of rock develop spidery fractures, expanded by percolating water, until they become multiple smaller chunks, Allam says. As erosion lowers the ground level, over many thousands of years, the rocks come to the surface, often stacked atop each other. “You need the right kind of climate conditions to create PBRs, and you need the right climate to make them last,” he says. “The American West is the perfect storm for this.”
The whole PBR-science idea started in the 1990s with James Brune, a geologist at the California Institute of Technology. “Brune was an old school genius,” Allam says. “He wore suspenders to all his presentations and wrote all his notes by hand.” Brune was assessing earthquake risk in Yucca Mountain, Nevada, to evaluate its future as a possible nuclear-waste storage site, when he noticed a handful of boulders balanced—rather precariously—on other stones, according to  American Scientist. The boulders were all coated with desert varnish—a dark sheathe of clay, manganese, and iron oxides—indicating they had been exposed for millions of years. Brune realized the rocks offered a kind of record of the area’s seismic history, or lack thereof. So, by running PBRs through  computer models that replicate earthquakes, Brune figured he could determine what level and type of shaking it would take to topple a particular rock, and then therefore rule that shaking out of its recent history.

WOLFE CREEK CRATER YOUNGER THAN PREVIOUSLY THOUGHT Wolfe Creek Crater, one of the world's largest meteorite craters, is much younger than previously thought. Wolfe Creek Crater is situated on the edge of the Great Sandy Desert in northern Western Australia. It is the second largest crater on Earth from which meteorite fragments have been recovered (the largest is Meteor Crater in Arizona). It was likely formed by a meteor about 15 metres in diameter, weighing around 14,000 tonnes. The age of the impact is poorly understood, and unpublished data suggests the impact could have occurred around 300,000 years ago. However, according to a new study led by Dr. Tim Barrows from the University of Portsmouth, the most likely age for the impact is 120,000 years ago. In the study, published in the journal Meteoritics & Planetary Science, researchers from the University of Portsmouth, Australia and the USA calculated the new age of Wolfe Creek Crater using two geochronological dating techniques. First, the researchers collected samples from around the crater rim and applied exposure dating, which estimates the length of time that a rock has been exposed at the Earth's surface to cosmic radiation. They were also able to determine the age through optically stimulated luminescence, (a dating technique used to measure how long ago sediment was last exposed to sunlight) on sand buried after the impact. Dr. Barrows said: "The crater is located in a fortuitous situation where we can use two different techniques to determine its age. The impact of the meteorite tilted and overturned the rock, exposing rock that was previously shielded from cosmic radiation. The newly formed crater also deflected the local wind field and created a new set of sand dunes. Results from the two dating techniques mutually support each other within the same age range." The researchers were able to produce a new topographic survey of the crater using aerial photos by Ted Brattstrom, a school teacher from Hawaii. He flew over the crater in a light aircraft in 2007 and took pictures of the crater from all directions. The resulting 3D model [https://skfb.ly/6MSLA] was used to create a digital elevation model of the crater. The researchers calculate that the maximum width of the crater is 946 metres in a NE-SW direction, reflecting the direction of the impact. The average diameter is 892 metres. They also predict a crater depth of 178 metres and that it is filled by about 120 metres of sediment, mostly sand blown in from the desert. Wolfe Creek Crater is one of seven sets of impact craters in Australia dating to within the last 120,000 years. From this, the researchers were able to calculate as to how often these crater-producing events occur. Dr. Barrows said: "Although the rate is only one large meteor hitting Australia every 17,000 years, it isn't that simple. The craters are only found in the arid parts of Australia. "Elsewhere, the craters are destroyed by geomorphic activity like river migration or slope processes in the mountains. Since Australia has an excellent preservation record with dated craters within the arid zone, we can estimate a rate for the whole Earth. Taking into account that arid Australia is only about one percent of the surface, the rate increases to one hitting the Earth every 180 years or so. There have been two big objects hitting the atmosphere in the last century -- Tunguska in 1908 and Chelyabinsk in 2013. "This is a minimum estimate because some smaller impacts were probably covered by sand during the last ice age. The number of large objects the atmosphere is probably 20 times this number because stony meteorites are far more common but not as many survive the fiery journey through the atmosphere or effectively make craters. Our results give us a better idea of how frequent these events are." Using the same geochronological dating techniques, the researchers were also able to recalculate the age Meteor Crater. They found it is likely to be 61,000 years old, over 10,000 years older than previously thought.

Researchers determine age for last known settlement by a direct ancestor to modern humans

Homo erectus, one of modern humans’ direct ancestors, was a wandering bunch. After the species dispersed from Africa about two million years ago, it colonized the ancient world, which included Asia and possibly Europe.
But about 400,000 years ago, Homo erectus essentially vanished. The lone exception was a spot called Ngandong, on the Indonesian island of Java. But scientists were unable to agree on a precise time period for the site—until now.
In a new study published in the journal Nature, an international team of researchers led by the University of Iowa; Macquarie University; and the Institute of Technology Bandung, Indonesia, dates the last existence of Homo erectus at Ngandong between 108,000 and 117,000 years ago.
The researchers time-stamped the site by dating animal fossils from the same bonebed where 12 Homo erectus skull caps and two tibia had been found, and then dated the surrounding land forms—mostly terraces below and above Ngandong—to establish an accurate record for the primeval humans’ possible last stand on Earth.
“This site is the last known appearance of Homo erectus found anywhere in the world,” says Russell Ciochon, professor in the Department of Anthropology at Iowa and co-corresponding author on the study. “We can’t say we dated the extinction, but we dated the last occurrence of it. We have no evidence Homo erectus lived later than that anywhere else.”

The research team presents 52 new age estimates for the Ngandong evidence. They include animal fossil fragments and sediment from the rediscovered fossil bed where the original Homo erectus remains were found by Dutch surveyors in the 1930s, and a sequence of dates for the river terraces below and above the fossil site.
In addition, the researchers determined when mountains south of Ngandong first rose by dating stalagmites from caves in the Southern Mountains. This allowed them to determine when the Solo River began coursing through the Ngandong site, and the river terrace sequence was created.
“You have this incredible array of dates that are all consistent,” Ciochon says. “This has to be the right range. That’s why it’s such a nice, tight paper. The dating is very consistent.”
“The issues with the dating of Ngandong could only ever be resolved by an appreciation of the wider landscape,” says Kira Westaway, associate professor at Macquarie University and a joint-lead author on the paper. “Fossils are the byproducts of complex landscape processes. We were able to nail the age of the site because we constrained the fossils within the river deposit, the river terrace, the sequence of terraces, and the volcanically active landscape.”
youtube
Previous research by Ciochon and others shows Homo erectus hopscotched its way across the Indonesian archipelago, and arrived on the island of Java about 1.6 million years ago. The timing was good: The area around Ngandong was mostly grassland, the same environment that cradled the species in Africa. Plants and animals were abundant. While the species continued to venture to other islands, Java, it appears, likely remained home—or least a way station—to some bands of the species.
However, around 130,000 years ago, the environment at Ngandong changed, and so did Homo erectus‘s fortunes.
“There was a change in climate,” Ciochon explains. “We know the fauna changed from open country, grassland, to a tropical rainforest (extending southward from today’s Malaysia). Those were not the plants and animals that Homo erectus was used to, and the species just could not adapt.”
Ciochon co-led a 12-member, international team that dug at Ngandong in 2008 and in 2010, accompanied by Yan Rizal and Yahdi Zaim, the lead researchers from the Institute of Technology, Bandung, on the excavation. Using notes from the Dutch surveyors’ excavation in the 1930s, the team found the original Homo erectus bone bed at Ngandong and re-exposed it, collecting and dating 867 animal fossil fragments. Meanwhile, Westaway’s team had been dating the surrounding landscapes, such as the terraces, during that time.

“It was coincidental” the teams were working in the same place—one group at the fossil bed, the other group dating the surrounding area, Ciochon says.
“With the data we had, we couldn’t really date the Ngandong fossils,” Ciochon continues. “We had dates on them, but they were minimum ages. So, we couldn’t really say how old, although we knew we were in the ballpark. By working with Kira, who had vast amount of dating data for the terraces, mountains, and other landscape features, we were able to provide precise regional chronological and geomorphic contexts for the Ngandong site.”

all’s fair in love and kahoot
The high school SAT’s are replaced with a 50 question nationwide game of Kahoot, and students will do anything to win.     I shouldn’t be thinking this, but it’s so bouncy. That’s right, I’m bopping along to Kahoot music. The ridiculously catchy music that echoes through the exam hall. The same hall where the fate of my academic life shall be decided. What have my days been reduced to? I’m screwed.    “You may key in the Kahoot code,” the teacher announced, a finger aimed at the six-digits number displayed across the large screen at the front of the hall.    I hold the standard issue smartphone attached by a charging cord to the table, nearly dropping it. I punch the numbers into the “Game PIN” bar and click ‘Enter’. There’s a standard naming convention so I enter my name dutifully into the empty bar.    The pinging is surprisingly rhythmic. Ping, ping, ping. I’m lulling into a false sense of relaxation just watching name after name pop up on the screen and the player count toggling through the numbers.    And that’s when the first of the incidents break out.    “f**k you” popped up on the screen, staring at every single person in the room with a defiant electronic glare. You could feel the air in the exam hall go still. I am outraged, and scared. Not for the bastard who entered that, but because it has begun. It has begun, and everything from this point is about to go downhill. As for the outrage, can you believe that the idiot left out proper capitalization? Who does that during finals, can you believe it? Absolutely outrageous.    The offender was soon tracked down and forcefully removed from the exam hall by two teachers. I think his name is Bobby. A stupid name fit for a stupid kid. He’s unleashed what can only be called chaos.    “As you know, this is a system of elimination,” the same teacher continued talking. “Every question, the lowest five in the level shall be eliminated. As for those who are eliminated, your score at that point will be recorded and added to your grade point average.”    I sigh. This is going to end disastrously.    “Since everyone is done entering their names, we shall commence the countdown.”    5…    I grip the phone tighter.    4…    I blink a few times to make sure this is not just a nightmare.    3…    I steal a look at all the other poor fools around me.    2…    I take a few deep breaths and steel myself    1.    The teacher clicks the ‘Start’ button.    What is the purpose of the mitochondria?    I almost slap myself. The first thing that entered my mind is “the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell”. Damn my meme-filled mind! Luckily, instead of inflicting facial harm on myself, I rapidly tap what I assume to be the correct answer.    “NO!”    Every head in the exam whipped around faster than my finger during Kahoot.    “I meant to click the yellow button!” The girl wailed with the force of ten thousand banshees, holding up her phone. On the screen was the red screen that everyone never wanted to see during finals. The infamous “Incorrect” page.    Soon, she was removed from the exam hall…along with 5 other candidates.    I am in 23rd place? Damn. Maybe I can make it through after all.    Next question.    “The geomorphic landscape is shaped by human factors.” True or false?    See, the thing about true or false questions is that they seem too simple. Two options, 50-50 chance. There’s something up about that. Nonetheless, I go for true.    “You looked at my answers!”    “What the hell are you talking about?”    Another wave of chaos has begun. We have officially arrived at the “cheating” stage, people. Of course, the two are soon removed from the hall.    I sit fidgeting with the phone, awaiting the next question.    The teacher clicks the ‘Next’ button.    I freeze.    No, this cannot be happening to me.    I look around in wild, flailing panic. Nobody else seems to be noticing, not even the usually overly observant teachers. My fingers lock in place.    Shit.    I resist the urge to stand up and yell for help.    I rapidly tap the screen.    I turn the phone off and on again.    Nothing is working.    SHIT.    “Excuse me.”    I freeze in place. A hand is resting on my shoulder. I look up into the fearsome face of a teacher, disappointment written across his face. I don’t know whether to cry or spit in his face. This is so unfair.    With no choice, I resign to my fate and stand up.    The teacher turns and beckons me to follow him out of the hall.    Swallowing back whatever I wanted to say, I take one last look back at the phone.    The same seven words were still staring at me with contempt.    Slow Network, you may experience network delays.

12 Most Spectacular Deserts In The World
People may often think of deserts as hot places; however, some deserts are quite cold.
Our modern methods of transportation allow us to take a close-up look at these regions that were previously considered extremely difficult or impossible to reach.
A desert is an arid, barren land with little or no vegetation. Essentially uninhabited in comparison to most other biomes, deserts make up roughly one-third of the planet’s land area. While the desert archetype may come to mind as sandy and sweltering, some of Earth’s deserts extend to the planet’s frozen poles.
We have put together a list of 12 the most incredible deserts in the world
1. Antarctic Desert – Antarctica | source
With an annual precipitation of approximately eight inches, Antarctica is classified as a desert, perhaps the least hospitable. The continent has no permanent residents. Those who do live in Antarctica are housed in the research stations that ring the continent.
2. Sahara Desert – Africa | source
Spread out over most of northern Africa, the Sahara Desert is the largest hot desert (3.6 million square miles or 9.3 million km²) in the world and third largest overall. When most people think about the Sahara, they imagine that it’s nothing but amazing sand dunes. But these actually only make a small portion of the desert. Most of the desert consists of rocky hamada or barren land with rocky plateaus. The Sahara also contains mountains, occasional grasslands, and salt flats.
3. Sonoran Desert – USA/Mexico | source
The Sonoran Desert sprawls across swaths of Arizona, California, and Mexico (including Sonora, Baja California, and Baja California Sur). The saguaro cactus and the organ pipe cactus, both of which have federal preserves named after them, are native to this rocky desert.
4. Namib Desert – Africa | source
Stretching for 1,200 miles (1,931 kilometers), The Namib, which at an age of 43 million years is widely accounted the world’s oldest desert, is located on the coast of southern Africa. A diverse set of animals live here, many of which exist nowhere else on the planet. The Namib Desert overlays coastal Namibia, extending into Angola and South Africa.
5. Salar de Uyuni – Bolivia | source
Once a pre-historic lake known as Lago Minchín, it covered southwest Bolivia, and when it dried up, it left behind the world’s largest salt flats, measuring 4,633 square miles (12,000 square kilometers). Located at the high altitude of 11,985 feet, or 3,653 meters, the Salar de Uyuni is a gorgeous and dazzling site of what time and Mother Nature can produce. The best way to see this beauty is to take a guided 4×4 tour.
6. Chihuahuan Desert – New Mexico | source
One of the largest deserts in North America – spread over 175,000 square miles, or 282,000 square kilometers – the Chihuahuan Desert has some incredible flora and fauna. This includes the Arizona rainbow cactus and gray fox. There are also some breathtaking sights, making this desert quite diverse. One must-see is the White Sands National Monument in New Mexico, which is a stunning display of white gypsum sand dunes.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
7. Thar Desert – India/Pakistan | source
The Thar Desert, covering 77,000 square miles, forms a geomorphic border between India and Pakistan. The desert’s formation and age are a matter of debate. Its varied habitats support a wealth of animal taxa, including 23 species of lizards and 25 species of snakes.
8. Grand Bara Desert – Djibouti | source
Situated in southern Djibouti, this desert is known for being one of the flattest, most barren sand surfaces in the world; it doesn’t have any bushes, trees or rocks. The desert is famous for the Grand Bara 15K, a marathon that has taken place every year since 1982.
9. Rub’ al Khali – Saudi Arabia | source
The Rubʿ al Khali, the centerpiece of the Arabian Desert, is also known as the Empty Quarter. Characterized by red-orange sand dunes due to the feldspar within the sand, it’s the largest sand desert on the planet. Temperatures reach as high as 133 degrees Fahrenheit.
10. Atacama Desert – South America | source
Situated west of the Andes along the Pacific coast in Peru and Chile, the Atacama Desert is known as the ‘driest place on Earth’. Parts of the desert have never seen a drop of rain since records have been kept. It measures 600 miles in length and circumscribes an area over 40,000 square miles.
11. Gobi Desert – China/Mongolia | source
The Gobi Desert is a beast of a desert spread across parts of southern Mongolia and northwestern China. It is famous for its role in the Mongol Empire and important stops along the Silk Road. The Gobi is also known for its extreme temperatures from as high as 122 degrees Fahrenheit (50 degrees Celsius) in the summer and extremely low temperatures in the winter. The area is also rich in fossils, including dinosaur eggs, and animals like Bactrian camels, Siberian ibex, and Gobi brown bears.
12. Mojave Desert – Nevada/California | source
he Mojave contains Death Valley, which sits at an elevation of 282 feet below sea level, making it the lowest point in North America. Joshua trees delineate the boundaries of the region. Las Vegas, Nevada, is the Mojave’s largest city.

Hidden traces of a massive ancient city are still in Mexico's landscape today

Modern roads and developments share more similarities with ancient urban centers than we often realize – which is certainly the case with the sprawling Teotihuacan settlement, once located around 40 kilometers (25 miles) northeast of Mexico City.
Researchers have used LIDAR (“light” and “radar”) scanning to reveal that the contours of Teotihuacan – much of it now built over and hidden from view – are still reflected in the roads and structures erected in the same location today, some 1,500 years later.
The same study has brought to light some of the amazing engineering carried out by the people of Teotihuacan: rerouting rivers to match points of astronomical significance, and shifting huge amounts of soil and bedrock to shape their city.
“We don’t live in the past, but we live with the legacies of past actions,” says anthropological archaeologist Nawa Sugiyama, from the University of California, Riverside.
“In a monumental city like Teotihuacan, the consequences of those actions are still fresh on the landscape.”
Between the years 100 BCE and 550 CE, Teotihuacan was one of the largest cities of the ancient world, covering around 21 square kilometers or 8 square miles. It was made up of many pyramids, plazas, and other commercial and residential buildings.
Some of the amazing structures of Teotihuacan are still around today, but a lot of it has been lost – and that’s where LIDAR aerial mapping technology comes in. It uses reflected laser light to measure structures and materials underground.
Here, the researchers used a combination of LIDAR, surveys taken on foot, and previously collected mapping data to draw comparisons between ancient Teotihuacan and the Teotihuacan Valley as it is today – now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
They found that 65 percent of urban areas in the region contain property or features that aligned orthogonally within 3 degrees of 15 degrees east of astronomical north – the same alignment that Teotihuacan was carefully built to. Meanwhile, modern day rock fences were built along the same lines as ancient walls, now underground.

The ancient Teotihuacans also invested a lot in rerouting rivers and building canals: The researchers discovered around 16.9 kilometers (10.5 miles) of existing waterways have their origins in the Early Classical Teotihuacan landscape.
“The Teotihuacan Valley’s unique environmental, cultural, and academic trajectories support a multi-scalar definition of humans as geomorphic agents,” write the researchers in their published paper.
The study estimates that around 372,056 square meters (4,004,777 square feet) of artificial ground had been laid over 300 years across the region. In total, 298 features and 5,795 human-made terraces were revealed that had not been previously recorded, while more than 200 features that once existed and have since been wiped away by mining activities were also noted.
Archaeologists continue to uncover new secrets about Teotihuacan and its history – we’ve previously seen researchers use the latest technology to reveal hidden tunnels and ritual offerings at the ancient site.
With this latest study, we know that the innovations and choices made over a thousand years ago continue to influence civilization. Next, the team wants to expand their LIDAR mapping to cover a wider area in three dimensions, across a longer period of time.
“We can’t fight modern urbanization,” says Sugiyama. “The LIDAR map provides a snapshot of these ancient features that are being abolished at an alarming rate that would otherwise go unnoticed. It’s one of many ways we can preserve our heritage landscape.”
The research has been published in PLOS One.

What Does it Mean to be a UNESCO World Heritage Site?

Travelers, adventurers, and tourists alike have all heard of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They’re usually considered gorgeous “must-visit” places, especially if you are looking to get to know a different country. But what is a UNESCO world heritage site, really? How do they earn that status, and why should they be protected?
Believe it or not, this idea has not been around for long. Declaring structures and land masses world heritage sites began in 1959 when Egypt requested assistance from The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), a specialized agency of the United Nations, to protect and rescue endangered monuments and sites. Since then, countries all over the world have added significant sites to the ongoing list of recognized world heritage sites. To date there, are 878 UNESCO World Heritage Sites across the world.
How are Sites Added to the List?
UNESCO administers a World Heritage Program, which maintains a list of sites worldwide with cultural or natural significance. Countries can submit their own sites to the program which are then added to a tentative list for review and approval. In order to have cultural or natural significance, UNESCO has developed the following ten criteria for determining what constitutes a world heritage site:
Represents a masterpiece of human creative genius and cultural significance.

Exhibits an important interchange of human values, over a span of time, or within a cultural area of the world, on developments in architecture or technology, monumental arts, town-planning, or landscape design.
To bear a unique or at least exceptional testimony to a cultural tradition or to a civilization which is living or which has disappeared.
Is an outstanding example of a type of building, architectural, or technological ensemble or landscape which illustrates a significant stage in human history.
Is an outstanding example of a traditional human settlement, land-use, or sea-use which is representative of a culture, or human interaction with the environment especially when it has become vulnerable under the impact of irreversible change.
Is directly or tangibly associated with events or living traditions, with ideas, or with beliefs, with artistic and literary works of outstanding universal significance.
Contains superlative natural phenomena or areas of exceptional beauty and aesthetic importance.
Is an outstanding example representing major stages of Earth’s history, including the record of life, significant ongoing geological processes in the development of landforms, or significant geomorphic or physiographic features.
Is an outstanding example representing significant ongoing ecological and biological processes in the evolution and development of terrestrial, freshwater, coastal and marine ecosystems, and communities of plants and animals.
Contains the most important and significant natural habitats for in-situ conservation of biological diversity, including those containing threatened species of outstanding universal value from the point of view of science or conservation.

The Benefits of Being a UNESCO World Heritage Site
There are a few benefits to being declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site:
Press and Popularity. The first benefit, however, is all about tourism. Once a site has been recognized, it becomes more attractive to travelers and therefore travel writers and other news organizations will help spread the word. The site suddenly has a certain status that it didn’t have before, and for many countries, this could help bring new economic benefits.
Funding. The site is eligible to receive funds for its protection and conservation. Since it is declared something of historical significance, it is understood worldwide that it needs to be preserved. The site will also have access to global project management resources if a repair is needed or if more options for tourism is needed to ensure the site’s protection.
Protection during a war. Once declared, the site becomes protected under Geneva convention against destruction during a war.

Today, some of the most recognized UNESCO world heritage sites including Serengeti National Park, Machu Picchu, and the Taj Mahal. Again, each world heritage site receives not only recognition, but protection from encroaching industrialization, mistreatment, or misuse. World heritage sites are not permitted to be used in support of military efforts and are to be an inspiring example of how recognizing the importance of art, cultural heritage, and natural beauty can transcend borders and political differences.
