Probably The Top 10 Characters of 2023
It's time for the hardest top 10 list of the year, deciding who my top 10 characters of the year are. I am a very character focused writer and GM and that translates to my enjoyment of art too. I love characters and it's so hard to pick between the amazing swath of fantastic characters I read this year. Lowering the list down after eliminating stuff I had the list at like over 20 characters so getting this down to 10 was an exercise in self doubt. Of all of these lists this really is the list that I want to thin about next year and see what characters I am still thinking about in one years time. Unlike my other lists this is not even roughly in any order it simply is the 10 characters that at the moment I was writing this I managed to cut a list down to. My 45th character at this moment might be number 2 tomorrow and you can't see my 45th character, you can only see 10.
Tumblr media
Mary Satome [Kaguri Twins]
I watched this early in the year but Mary stuck with me. She's funny, she's clever, she is messy, she's an asshole, she's sweet, she's passionate and determined and I just want the best for her and her girlfriends. It's rare to see a woman be as messy as her and remain the main character but she gets to both be kinda noble and heroic while also clearly being self motivated.
Tumblr media
Prospera Mercury [gwitch]
Easily mother of the year, Prospera Mercury is a litness test for me on someone's taste and makes for an easy read on if someone will have utterly trash politics or not. If Prospera was a man she would probably be one of the most beloved characters in anime as a passionate loving mom who tries to teach her child hard lessons and is willing to do anything to give her child freedom and get her revenge. However, she is not a guy so from the start everyone suspected she was awful and abusive and terrible when the text never not even at the end supports it, she is mean to Sulleta exactly once and that is so she is not an accomplice to her crimes in case she ends up getting stopped.
Tumblr media
Tilty Claret  [MagiRevo]
My favorite "side" character of the year has to be Tilty, this little freak. Tilty is sweet, she's kind, she deserves a girlfriend, two girlfriends, she should be dating Anise and Euphy. She is funny, she's well used, she does great emotional support and understands Anise so well, I love her so much and I love how loyal and great she is to the people she loves. I love her sciencey freaky attitude too she's just great.
Tumblr media
Honey Trap [Super Women In Love]
Villain to Hero Honey Trap is utterly endearing. She starts as simply simping for Rapid Rabbit but it's fun to watch her evolve as a character and as a person over the course of the manga. She's sweet, endearing and brutal at all the right times. She's so gay and really funny, and she is really a perfect protagonist for this romantic comedy action yuri series. She's such a perfectly crafted character who can really command a range from serious threat to tragic damsel to Hero to gay little goof ball all while feeling like the same consistent character.
Tumblr media
Satya [Pink Sugar]
Satya comes in with an air of mystery but this trans lesbian swiftly shows how quickly someone can go from sexy mystery to beloved dork. Satya gets a lot of the most soft and sweet moments with her future girlfriends getting to be someone to listen to them, to ask questions as an outsider to the trio and to be the inciting incident to get them to go on their wild road trip to begin with. I am really curious where her story will go but it would be lying to say she hasn't already endeared herself to the top of my list despite being probably the least focused on girl of the quad so far.
Tumblr media
Shadowheart [BG3]
BG3 has a lot of good characters, great characters even and that is in spite of it being attached to one of the worst IPs around D&D. Shadowheart stood out to me among the many characters of a character who had queerness as part of her character done well despite being a player sexual character and I think she has the most dramatic character arc of the batch on her good path. Shadowheart starts as a catty Mormon girl and evolves into this kind heroic adventurer who you could see saving the world many more times.
Tumblr media
Adalia [En Garde!]
While En Garde! might be a short 3 hour romp all three hours with Adalia are perfectly used. She's funny, charming, cute, and heroic. She's fitting a very classic archtype but is a spin on it by having it both be a woman but also be queer. These two factors do add to Adalia's charm, the gay side lets us see her enter dork mode where she is very gay for a sexy pirate woman and her animations change and she makes worse decisions then snap out of it when it's what needs to happen to help people. She's utterly lovely and a true delight.
Tumblr media
Nova [Spellastra]
While almost every character here has a bit of a silly side, I can appreciate a more dramatic character. Nova is a character covered in tragedies, of angst, of wanting to love but feeling unable, she's rough and prickly and messy and makes bad choices but they all make a lot of sense for where she is at in any given moment. Nova is at once the older mentor who knows what to do but also the love interest who's fucked up plenty of times and blames herself even more than she ever should. Nova's a testament to the depth and layers you can really give a character while having her be lovable and desirable and still fit in for more fun moments while having these hard edges.
Tumblr media
Jala [Thirsty Suitors]
Speaking of messy queers we have the disaster bisexual herself Jala. She's a character I really wanna dive deeper into because I think there is so much to Jala and the game does a pretty good job at leaving a lot of space for my brain to get cooking about why Jala is like this while also explaining a lot of why Jala is like this. Jala has hurt a lot of people, like most of the people in her life and her path to make it right with everyone is great. We get to see where other people fucked up, what complicated situations, where she grows and where she stands firm. Jala is a really perfectly envisioned character with a cast weaved so perfectly around her that every interaction is splendor to behold.
Tumblr media
Astra [Grand Slam Romance]
Astra's on a quest to fuck every woman on the planet and more power to her. Astra is kinda the villain of the first book but she's also the romantic lead which places her in an interesting position in the story where we see her at her worst, we get to understand how she got there and we are cheering for her to tone it down like 10%. I am fully biased in my love for her and I make no excuses for it. Astra is designed exactly like many of my OCs with a personality similar to a lot of my OCs, I love everything about her, I want her great success and I look forward to people telling me I ripped her off even if I made characters like her like 10 years ago and have a record of it. I love her and I just wanna see more of her.
If you want to help me enjoy more art then consider checking out my Patreon or Ko-fi .and giving me a little bit of cash so I can do more of this kind of writing but also like make lots of my own art, art is hard to make and costs money and like maintain my chronically ill and trans body also takes money so anything helps, thank you.

A Note On... Ending the Count-Duke's Conspiracy
Tumblr media
En Garde! is an action game by Fireplace Games. Take up your sword and become the hero of the people!
When I first saw the trailer for this game, I knew it was going to be a pretty rad experience. I mean, who doesn't love fencing swordplay with a little bit of flair?
The gameplay is definitely a selling point. I love games where a little bit of skill is necessary. The parrying mechanic is fantastic, with very obvious indicators between knowing when to dodge (orange) and parry (blue). I didn't find too much use for the panache system because I was always in the action and I forget that I can use it aside from it being rather necessary to finish the final boss battle. To me, that's a pretty major loss since flair is a big positive for the game and its experience.
Which leads to my biggest issue of the game: the enemies. Every enemy has three attacks (ones to parry, ones to dodge, and one for either). Some do only parry-able or dodge-able attacks or some do both. It was all very samey once you get to episode 4, but due to how short the game is, it plays just fine.
My real issue with the enemies is the number of them and what happens when you combine the types. The bosses for episodes 2 and 4 (and some arena battles with reinforcements) were very annoying for this reason.
Often you'd have two enemies attacking at the same time, but one would be a parry and the other would be a dodge. The best answer should be to dodge, but, when it comes to episodes 3 and 4, you can't because enemies can recover their guard. Now when you have a horde of enemies attacking you in this way (3 or more enemies at once), it feels like the difficulty is a little silly, especially since fencing is mostly for duelling and not for fending off crowds of people. I'd think that crowds wouldn't be as big an issue if the enemy types were grouped better, but that's just my take.
With that said, the duels themselves are awesome. It's a great feeling being able to overtake your opponent in a duel and I wish there was more of that, honestly.
Ending on a mostly positive note, what surprised me the most is the absolutely fantastic voice acting and music. I did not expect the level of polish that the game provides, mostly because it is astoundingly short. The dialogue really comes alive thanks to their performances.
Honestly though, I wish this game had a little more to it. A bit longer. A bit more variety in battle. If the acts had more narrative flesh to them, that'd be nice, but it works well as is. I haven't experienced the arena mode, but I can't imagine it adding more to my personal experience of the game.
Overall, En Garde! is a well-polished fencing game that you should give a try if you're into the flair!
As always,
Enjoy gaming!

August 2023 Update
Tumblr media
Hope you're having a good summer! Here's some games that came out last month that I missed:
The Banished Vault - Very Positive reviews, sci-fi strategy with a great art style!
Garage: Bad Dream Adventure - Very Positive reviews, looks very gnarly and weird (I say this lovingly)
The elephant in the room here is Baldur's Gate 3 on August 3rd, which doesn't need little old me advertising it. 😉
Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical comes out August 10th. I played the demo a while back and it was a little slow, but I respect the concept of making a fully voiced-and-sang visual novel. And its got a star-studded cast!
Sea of Stars releases on August 29 - difficult for me to recommend because I hated the studios other game, The Messenger. But it looks just gorgeous, and the soundtrack is by Yasunori Mitsuda, so I'm grudgingly keeping an eye on it.
En Garde! - August 16 (One of my favorite demos in June's Next Fest!)
The Cosmic Wheel of Sisterhood - August 16 (witchy roleplaying tarot-deck maker?)
Fort Solis - August 22 (story-driven FPS space walking sim)
Under the Waves - August 29 (story-driven undersea sad man game)

I love demos, they let you get a little taste of the video game before you drop $60 USD or more on a program your PC can't even run. So today, I'm gonna be spending some time with TWO demos for games that have caught my interest, En Garde! and Lies of P.
En Garde is an action game where you play a swashbuckling fencing vigilante against the forces of a local despot, very light hearted and colorful.
Lies of P looks to the latest Soulslike, drawing very heavily from Bloodborne in its aesthetic and gameplay.
If they appeal to me, I might pick them up for full playthroughs, but for now, hop in and let's see what they're all about.

So, I have several new characters despite not 'joining any new games'.
It's failed, horribly.
My husband and I have started several games, one he is running is an open game that anyone is welcome to join called En Garde! Via a Discord server.
I have 2 characters in the game, after retiring my first. (He hit his end game, got to SL 10, married his mistress, was a King's Musketeer for a few months, debt free, and is now running an inn that'll be used as a backdrop for other things.)
Second character is Serge de Bordeaux, the bastard of an impoverished Comte, he is looking to make a name for himself, and prove he's not his father (he's better.) He is a cock sure 18 year old, and he currently needs a good bit of money to get out of debt, and then begin climbing the social ladder.
Newest character is Solitaire Énveré (real name Soléne Anouihl), a 'married' 16 year old, Sol goes by her childhood nickname and 'married' her best friend Céline Beauchamp (alias Alizee Énveré). They are both very new to Paris, and they are not in fact a real couple. Sol has no interest in being a man, but they both understand how much is closed to single women in the likes of 1626 Paris due to social norms, so they set out to make their life a bit better and see the City for themselves. They've made some friends, and make a big show of 'just being married', with Sol being a bit more quiet as she tries to keep up her charade.
For another game we have started called Honor and Introgue, I have a youngish (21-22) year old pirate in the Caribbean, she has very little interest in settling down, though is a hopeless romantic. She has been sailing the Caribbean for 3 years, after leaving England originally during the Protestant Reformation. Relocating with her uncle and cousin to Italy, where she found the life her uncle offered was not at all palatable. She ran off, leaving her family behind and learning Italian before meeting a man and his son, who took her in, taught her how to fight the Italian Duel style, she took off once more when the son died and the man threw her out (then died, and she is now being blamed for that, because SURPRISE! The son isn't actually dead.)
Anyway, I am super excited to see where she winds up, at the moment she has done her best to refuse anything higher than First Mate/Quartermaster on a ship. She has been enlisted by the Pirate King of Tortuga as his quartermaster at the moment, as they attempt to get enough treasure to keep his position. (She has an enemy of the Admiral of the Spanish Navy's wife, because of an affair, and she is basically on the run from her brother who is a Captain in the Navy. He's being paid by her to hunt Sybil down and kill her.) Said Captain is backing another Pirate captain who is using fine goods to Garner votes from the others to become the Pirate King himself, and then a puppet for the Spanish Naval Man.
Right now there is a chance Sybil dies, but it all goes according to plan, she is likely to be shoved out by the Pirate King as he announces he's retiring, and throwing her in as the next King. (Which she will absolutely hate, and I look forward to the big climactic battle for this portion, as we will end the story after Tortuga's fate is decided.)
THEN my husband has the audacity to be like "I really want to play Fate." So he kept pitching me ideas, until he suggested what boils down to basically Bridgerton meets Spider-man with Swashbuckling.
I fell on playing Matilda Whitlock, a woman just reaching age to attend the Ton, and be touted about for marriage. Her brother and her are the only two living members of their family, after their parents are killed off for land disputes (we aren't actually sure yet). Nathan, her brother is a gambler, and has been running the family into poverty, he is pursued by debt collectors, and they are at risk of losing everything.
Matilda in our one session played so far, has been very clear in her disdain of being married off, not because she doesn't want a husband. Secretly she longs to find a man she loves and could spend her life with much like her mother and father, however, she has spent the last several years learning to fight, to take on the cities criminals, and slowly gaining insight on who killed her parents.
She is a haughty, stubborn woman of society during the day, attending tea, entertaining visits of men, and doing her duty no matter how much she bucks against it.
At night she dressed in a black outfit, complete with black mask, and has been deemed 'The Black Goat' by the citizens and criminals alike. All believe the Goat is nothing more than a vigilante man, playing at being more than he is. She has proven in her one session a competent fighter, as well as more than happy to use her skills for somewhat selfish reasons. (She went after debt collectors who took her jewelry to pay off her brother's debts.)
I can not wait to see where all these new characters go, especially as we wrap up other games.
Coming to an end are Burning Wheel (Burning Seas), which I have a feeling is going to end with Jerica's death.
Burning Wheel (Burning Stars) with @artbyakikira , who has been a delight as a Roden named Bumper, but we will answer so many questions, will my elf die? Or will she cling to life and keep Galluchanar alive as well? Will my dwarf continue to fight for her birth right? Or will she accept her adopted brother and let him take the throne? Will she die fighting against the corrupted elves, or will she die fighting the elven army marching on Maraknaplana to keep the dwarves from taking the mountain and possibly releasing the stars once more?
We are also wrapping up our Pathfinder for Savage Worlds game coming to an end. I feel Bacun is going to either not make it, or she's going to be lost to rage when she loses another friend.
13th Age with Terach is also coming to an end soon, our current quest to save the ancient Red Dragon Ethridge from the Lich King's poison is coming to an end. Leaving us wondering if our Druid will die to his patron of the Dragon Druid circle, if our Drow will be able to survive as the pair of dragons go at it, and if Terach will make it out of Ethridge's mind alive, or if they're doomed to become apart of a Dracholich.
Once this story arc is wrapped we head into Level 10, and start working on the Crusader's final assault and trying to end him. (I'm really curious what is going to happen, considering Terach is a Chaotic gremlin and could swing either way at the drop of a hat.)
Then we have Beyond the Wall, season 2 coming to an end. This game is a follow up in 5E from a previous game of Beyond the Wall, and is culminating in some very exciting times as we head into the mountain once again, to face off against our former ally and friend, to keep the world from ending.
We may finally get an answer from Amelio, the alf-elf fighter/paladin on who he wants to settle down with as well, the lovely elf who restored his voice, or the loyal and charming Tiefling he has been oblivious to until a big kiss (and mother and friend intervention and they forced him to tell Amelio. :P)
So many games are wrapping, but I'm hopeful to get to know these new duet characters, and explore who they are, what they want, and how far they are willing to go.

En Garde! Quick Review
Tumblr media
En Garde! gives us Adalia the sword swinging bisexual icon as the protagonist for a rather short but well condensed sword fighting game. It is a perfect swashbuckler game with rapid fire jokes, banter and fun paired with amazing voice acting from the cast. It is really a brilliant display of how great a small cast, amount of original models, and run time can do with really amazing presentation, soundtrack, animation, voice acting and gameplay.
Adalia and Zaida are really really cute and adorable and I love them and to me it's very explicitly gay but there is no kiss, no decoration of them being in a relationship even if it's heavily implied that they have at least dated in the past if not in the present. Like for me, I would have liked a kiss, just one little kiss in the end. Zoro gets to kiss the girl in the end, why not Adalia and her hot pirate GF. Still Adalia got a unique animation just for being gay for Zaida and for me that worked for the run time and fun of this game.
The gameplay is smooth with it feeling amazing on a gamepad, I played with auto perry on because my brain is bad and I have terrible reaction times but trying to manual perry it still felt good it just felt like I was being taken out of the fantasy of the game and more into I am playing a game trying to overcome my physical limits so switching on auto perry felt like I was the amazing swashbuckler the game wanted me to feel like and I still sometimes wiped out and lost a fight so it did not remove the challenge or even reaction times all together with how the mechanics go by the end of the game.
The mechanics do a nice job of adding a little more and more as you go on and applying things in fun ways all the way into the end thanks to that short length and fun loop. I could defiantly see myself picking this game back up to just play the arena mode or replaying trying to find all the hidden bits of content or get a better run time.
Overall, I really loved this game and I recommend it. It really feels like a game that wants you to replay it, it wants to be a cotton candy game that just gives you fun for a few hours whenever you just wanna take your mind off shit. Check it out.

A quote, perchance? :)
Tumblr media
Haha! I wasn't actually expecting to be poked! Okay, lemme go grab something from my *ahem* newly finished prologue~
The main characters in the prologue (Kiva & Harrad) are not the overall main characters, but they do come back and play a vital part throughout the whole story.
‘Why are we stopping?’ Kiva sounded prickly and unsteady. ‘Why d’you think?’ Harrad said, baffled as he pointed to the knife protruding from Kiva’s leg. ‘We need to deal with that before you lose too much blood.’ ‘I said I was fine,’ Kiva jerked free of Harrad’s grasp and narrowed his eyes. ‘So I heard,’ Harrad said, then something dawned on him. ‘You can’t heal yourself, can you?’ Kiva’s eyes blazed molten fury at him, but Harrad could see he was right. Taking a more practical stance, Harrad continued. ‘Well, I can. If you want to be out of this city, you’ll need that leg healed. Let me help.’ Harrad did not wait for a reply, instead moving towards Kiva to remove the knife. Instinct drove Kiva to put his hands in front, pushing back. Harrad shot Kiva a scathing look and Kiva, after a moment, relaxed his stance, allowing Harrad to take the knife out. ‘Krȧna,’ Harrad said, summoning his will to staunch the bleeding and seal the wound. Harrad felt the faint tinge of energy coming from the knife. Enchanted. How curious.
