You may or may not wake up to him eagerly kissing your neck and feeling your soft lips with his thumb.
Tumblr media
RAY- Ray is also very stressed, working in his line of jon isn't easy. Smiling to himself at your sight he'll go finish some of his paperwork and only than join you to bed, feeling your warm body and your soft breathing on his skin, instantly relaxing and feeling at peace.

Can you please make incorrect quotes for Electra meeting Y/N who became like a way darker version of Daredevil after her apparent deat at the hands of Bullseye (it happened like in comics) (he stabbed her with her own sai) and even gone so far as to beat kingpin almost to half death and Electra saying that she do have a remedy for his grief?
Y/N keeps Kingpin pinned down, beating him within an inch of his life…
Elektra pulls Y/N off the villain…
Elektra: my love look at me!
Y/N: you’re not real. You’re not. I saw you die
Elektra caresses their cheek…
Elektra: it’s me.
Y/N collapses against her crying and holding her tight…
Elektra: don’t lose yourself to the darkness my love

DEVIL ON MY SHOULDER - MATT MURDOCK
Tumblr media Tumblr media
five - why am i like this
tags: @dusstory @americaarse @ironprincessstranger @johnmurphys-sass // four //six // masterlist
Pairing: Daredevil x Exodus (Matt Murdock x Reader)
Word Count: 11,064
Summary: The case of a lifetime. Frank Castle V The People. Benefits of working with the Punisher meant you knew who he really was and you were ready to go to war to prove it.
Your trio ducked into the elevator without a word. There was a thick tension between you all as you pressed the card to the reader. Matt was livid. He clearly wasn’t happy with your appearance but you couldn’t find it in yourself to care, even though his unfiltered anger was burning through to your bones. Everything you had seen from him that night was pointing you in a direction that you couldn’t fully believe.
Maybe you just didn’t want to believe it.
Matt Murdock was Daredevil, and as impossible as the idea seemed, it made perfect sense when all was considered. And that just made you hate the idea even more, and hate the fact that you couldn’t connect those dots any sooner.
What would it have changed? Would you have taken his words to heart about change?
What you couldn’t understand was how he could do all of that while being blind.
You took a second to check your phone in the elevator. You saw messages from Karen, most giving a brief recall of her conversation with Frank about his family. There was a message from Foggy about the deal from Reyes.
fogster: delaware doesnt have evidence. no death penalty
fogster: 3 life no parole down to 1 w parole in 25 but gen-pop :/
At least something was successful that day. You sent a quick message for him to tell you when it was done and you thanked him for pulling your weight with the case you insisted on.
After Elektra plugged in a small device, you three began wandering the floor. Matt stopped you all every so often, pulling you and Elektra around a corner or pushing you two down a short hall. Maybe you would’ve been thankful if he hadn’t been hiding the truth from you.
When you finally reached the office, Matt broke into the safe while Elektra watched the doors. You wandered the space, flipping through pages and peeking through drawers. You didn’t know what exactly you were looking for but it was a decent distraction. Glancing up at your friend, you found her panicking.
“I take it, it's not there.” Matt said in annoyance.
“It was supposed to be here!” She insisted.
You offered a quick whistle and pointed to the bottom hem of your dress, which was moving with an air current.
“Why is there air coming from under the wall?” You asked quietly, stepping closer and tapping lightly. You tapped the panel beside it and found a different depth to the sound.
“Do that again.” Matt said suddenly as he practically jumped up to be beside you.
You offered him a look but did it again, tapping the same few spots.
“Hear that?” You leaned around him to ask Elektra. “It’s hollow here.”
“There’s an electrical current running through it, too.” Matt explained, running his hand across the wall until the bookshelf. “There’s an interruption here.”
You decided you weren’t going to comment on how he could do that while Elektra fidgeted with the bookshelf. The door popped open and she hurried inside to find the ledger. You stayed outside the secret room, watching the door. It seemed unlike your group’s luck to get that far with no challenge so you tapped your scar. You slid your finger along it until you picked up the Yakuza’s radio frequency.
You didn’t need to speak Japanese to know they were on to you.
“The Roxxon ledger.” Elektra gasped.
“Great. We need to move.” You popped your head in. “Pretty sure they’re on the way to us, unless you guys want to take on however many people we’ve been sneaking away from all night.. Up to you.”
Everyone hurried over to the elevators but found they weren’t working. The power shut off and you cursed quietly. You grabbed Elektra, who grabbed Matt, and pulled her down the other side of the hall. After a short fight in a conference room, you three were able to get to the stairwell and down a couple floors.
You pushed them into a different conference room when you heard the door to the stairwell click open. You snatched the book out of Elektra’s hands and dropped your bag beside it. You pushed Matt’s jacket down his arms and tossed it over the book, making sure it was fully covered.
“Get on the table.” You pointed to Elektra, who happily sat atop the glass. You placed yourself between her knees and reached for Matt’s wrists.
“What are you doing?” Matt asked as you pulled him to stand in front of you.
“Trust me.” You shrugged. “Unless you want to get shot in the head. I can stop.”
He frowned at you but didn’t stop you. You tucked his hands behind you to meet Elektra’s legs. You felt her chin rest on your shoulder as she watched the movement of your hands. You tugged his tie apart and began unbuttoning his shirt.
“I see.” Elektra mused, draping an arm over your other shoulder. “But we should make it a bit more believable, don’t you think?”
“We don’t have a lot of time, El.” You argued quietly.
“We do have a little time.” She smiled and you turned to face her. You sighed slightly and raised your eyebrows expectantly. “Now this is like old times.” She said with a wink as she placed two fingers under your chin and gently pulled you closer.
“Not this time, babe.” You muttered as your lips brushed against hers, making her pout. “Nice try though.” You pulled away and grinned.
“Kiss me.” You told Matt as you turned back around.
“What?” He asked in disbelief.
“Public displays of affection make people very uncomfortable. Mix in that it’s more than the traditional two, no one will look that long.”
“You just want an excuse to kiss him.” Elektra murmured in your ear and you saw Matt offer a small smirk.
“Like you wouldn’t take the chance.” You chuckled slightly as Matt’s hand slid across your cheek to the back of your head, pulling your lips to meet his gently.
Kissing him back, you felt every inch of your body ignite, like a dream realized. Your own hands slid up Matt’s chest, behind his neck so your fingers could slide into his hair. He made the smallest sound in his throat, like he was trying to hide it, and you smiled slightly against his lips.
Elektra’s hands slid up your arms, over your shoulders and down your back until she found your hips. She pulled you back against her as Matt took a step forward to press his body against yours. You gasped slightly and he took the opportunity to slip his tongue into your mouth.
You reached back to flatten a hand on the desk for balance but Elektra took your hand and placed it on her leg instead, inching your fingers under her dress. Her other hand gently brushed your hair over your shoulder, which sent a shiver down your spine.
Matt pulled away, trying to catch his breath as he grinned at you. The hand you still had in hair slid down, trailing down his chest and stomach and ghosting over scars and bruises. It almost slipped your mind that your little steamy interaction was only a ruse, especially given the electricity zipping through every inch of your body and the tingle of your skin everywhere it met his. Mixing in Elektra’s purposeful and featherlight touches, you felt yourself at the edge of melting
It was all you ever wanted, to feel Matt’s body heat pressed against you. His hands fitted to your body as if you two were made to fit together. Lips on yours as if they were always meant to be connected, like no one else should ever have the chance.
But all of those feelings, it felt like kissing Daredevil. And it twisted the entirety of the moment into something that just felt fake.
“Get on your knees.” He said lowly.
Despite your usual composure, you felt a heat climb your cheeks as you knelt down. You busied your hands at his belt while him and Elektra began kissing, just as the door opened.
“Don’t move!” The man called, forcing Matt and Elektra apart.
Matt hurried to help you up while Elektra flipped over dramatically to gather his jacket and the ledger. While the Yakuza came closer, you feigned your own intoxication and wobbled on your feet, giggling as you teetered and reached for your bag.
“Qui êtes-vous ? Pourquoi nous dérangez-vous ? Nous ne faisons de mal à personne.” You hiccuped, reaching for Elektra to steady yourself. The man pushed you two towards his partner while he checked Matt. (Who are you? Why are you bothering us? We’re not hurting anyone.)
“Vous n'êtes pas tous les deux amusants !” You pouted, making Elektra laugh. (You’re both no fun!)
You and your partners were allowed to leave, feigning your intoxication and innocence as you hurried through the party. You and Elektra giggled and bumped into people, offering slurred apologies and wide grins. You stole drinks off serving trays and left them half empty on open tables. You two stumbled down the stairs, laughing widely when you caught each other until you got back into the car. You sighed in relief and listened as Elektra explained what she saw in the book. You quietly gathered all of your original belongings when Elektra’s voice drew your attention.
“Quelque chose ne va pas ?” She asked and your brows raised. She must’ve figured it was something you didn’t really want to say in front of Matt. “Y/N?” (Is something wrong?)
“Il a déménagé et a agi beaucoup comme lui…” You looked up and frowned slightly. Matt’s brows were furrowed as he listened and you knew he wasn’t fluent in French, but he could understand some. “Je pensais que c'était impossible, mais maintenant je n'en suis pas si sûr. Mais c'est vrai, n'est-ce pas ?” (He moved and acted a lot like him… I thought it was impossible but now I’m not so sure. But it’s true, isn’t it?)
“Vous connaissez déjà la réponse, n'est-ce pas ?” She asked gently. (You already know the answer, don’t you?)
“Je suppose que oui.” You nodded. (I guess so.)
“Au moins, vous avez finalement eu un vrai baiser.” She tried gently. (At least you two finally got a real kiss.)
“Ce n'était pas plus réel que le photomaton.” You answered with a tight smile, trying to play it off like you didn’t care. “D'ailleurs, il a une petite amie. C'est aussi mon amie...” (That was no more real than the photo-booth. Besides, he has a girlfriend. She’s my friend, too…)
“I’m sorry.” She said honestly. “I’m sure this isn’t how you wanted to find out.”
“Maybe I was hoping I wouldn’t find out at all.” You shrugged. “Makes everything a bit more complicated, doesn’t it?”
Elektra dropped you off first. You thanked her for the ride and the dress before climbing out, carefully avoiding any contact with Matt. He began to say something but you closed the door before he could. Instead, you headed upstairs and began to change for bed.
You were microwaving leftovers when your phone rang so you tapped your implant.
“Yeah?” You said as you pulled a drink from your fridge.
“He pled not guilty.” Matt said when you answered.
“Shit.” You sighed. “Foggy tell you that?”
“Hey, Y/N.” Foggy added. “Sorry, Karen said you weren’t answering so I was gonna just tell you tomorrow but Matt insisted. How’s your flooding situation?”
Matt scoffed loudly.
“It’s fine.” You ignored the noise. “I gotta do a lot of cleaning but could’ve been worse. What happened with Frank?”
“Reyes pulled every string she has and fast tracked the trial.”
“Can we motion to extend?”
“We can streamline our case theory but we can’t waste time fighting the charges-“ Matt suggested.
“Wait. How many charges were there again?”
“Too many to fight right now.”
“That’s not a number.” You frowned.
“We don’t need a number if-“
“If some of them can get knocked off or dropped to misdemeanors, yes we do. And last I checked, you aren’t-“
“Can you guys stop?” Foggy cut in quickly. “I’m tired of you two bickering over everything! Any chance you get, you two are screaming at each other like you hate each other! I’m sick of it!”
“Sorry, Foggy.” You said softly as your microwaved beeped.
Suddenly you weren’t hungry anymore. You realized that it was yet another time where you had been so zoned in on Exodus, that your regular life was merely background noise. You knew you had been arguing with Matt a lot more lately, but didn’t really think it was affecting anyone else.
“Frank thinks he’s sticking it to Reyes or something. It must’ve been cause of what we said before, I don’t know… I just- I hope your schedules are clear and you two can get it together, because The People V. Frank Castle starts next week.”
“Сукин сын.” You sighed and rubbed your eyes. “Okay, okay, we can make something work. I’ll see you guys in the morning.” (Son of a bitch.)
The next few days went by in a blur. You were ignoring calls from Elektra. You ignored the few unprecedented messages from Natasha regarding her sudden interest in your mental status. You were in and out of Metro-General constantly, talking to Frank and trying to create a defense with your team.
You and Matt were able to keep your bickering to a minimum, thanks to you deciding not to speak to him unless it was about the case. It wasn’t your favorite course of action, but every time you looked at him, all you could see was Daredevil.
Then your skin felt hot with memories of where his fingers had left permanent stains on your body through your suit. All you could see were the hidden red eyes and little horns staring back at you instead of the boy who had swooped in and made a home in your heart.
There were even a few nights where you fell asleep at the hospital because you didn’t want to go work on anything with him at the office. Frank was better company than Matt through it anyways. Frank made you laugh and helped you be less mopey and distraught. He teased you about hating the same guy you loved.
By the time the trial rolled around, you felt as well prepared as you could and thought you had a good concept of who Frank really was. But at the same time, you felt like you were all going to fall flat on your faces and embers as yourselves in front of the hundreds of eyes that were glued to your case.
Maybe it was a bad idea to pick a fight with the DA.
The atmosphere of the room was tense when you were brought in to talk about the jury. Everyone in the courtroom had their own strong emotions about Frank and the whole room was divided. Some of the jury looked at him in awe, admiration, a few with desire even. The rest radiated hatred, contempt, disgust. Foggy was right. Everyone had an opinion on Frank Castle and that was gonna make your job that much harder.
“M’Naghten rule is still our best bet.” Foggy reasoned, drawing a scoff from you.
“What’s that?” Karen asked from the other room.
“Insanity plea.” You answered in annoyance. “And we’re not doing it.”
“We need to buy a ‘not guilty’ verdict.” He explained. “A high school debate team could prove that Castle did it.”
“I don’t care.” You rubbed your eyes in frustration. “He’s not insane and if you try to insinuate he is, he will fight you on it. Is that really the hill you wanna die on?”
“Really?” He frowned at you.
“Poor choice of words. My fault.” You nodded.
“Since when are you an expert in Frank Castle’s reactions?” Matt asked with a slight scoff.
You chose to ignore the fight he was trying to pick but you didn’t miss the pointed look Foggy shot him or the wave of jealousy that rolled off of him. When put together, it almost made you laugh, especially since Matt couldn’t see the look.
At least, you didn’t think he could.
You didn’t understand what he could or couldn’t see anymore given the way he fights as Daredevil.
“He’s intense, definitely, but he’s not insane.” You continued calmly. “Looking at the what happened without the why it happened would make anyone look bad.”
“I think Y/N’s right.” Karen agreed and you gave Foggy a triumphant look. “I’m not so sure he’s insane.”
“See? Even the girl who almost got shot doesn’t think so.”
“Okay, really?” She glared at you.
“It’s true!” You defended with a shrug.
“You’re both gonna tell me that he hasn’t at least driven past Crazy Town?” Foggy teased.
“Fog, c’mon.” You sighed.
“They’re right. Insanity only has a .12% acquittal rate in New York anyway.” Matt chimed in.
“Besides, Reyes would probably call some psych expert to tear that defense apart.” You shook your head.
“What defense?” Foggy laughed. “Y/N, we have nothing.”
“Could we- Y/N, could we push for a mistrial?” Karen asked you, causing you to turn and look up at her. “We talk about the DNR, the suits. Reyes’ involvement. We get her kicked off the case.”
“She wouldn’t see it coming.” Matt said.
You stood from your chair and began pacing, taping your chin as you spoke through your thoughts.
“I’m pretty sure the DNR should’ve only been signed by Frank, someone Frank would’ve designated as a medical proxy - probably would’ve been his wife - or the senior treating doctor. We’d need to see who signed it because she could’ve called for it and had the doctor sign it. Or even forged Frank’s signature and claimed it was done on arrival, unless he was noted as arriving unconscious. Then again, she could’ve had his chart changed, same as the family’s deaths.” You said to no one in particular. “But even then, we’d have a better shot if we had some sort of recording or written record of the shoot to kill from the attempted ambush the other night.”
“If we go down this road-“ Foggy added, standing from his own chair. “-we gotta prove, in a court of Law, that the government willfully hid evidence of the Punisher ambush against Grotto and that Reyes was involved.”
“I was there and you were there.” Karen gestured to herself and Foggy.
“You’re not exactly impartial. Remember that conflict of interest Reyes tried to threaten us with?” You countered easily. “The judge would throw the whole motion out.”
“Either way, we need an opening statement by tomorrow.” Foggy pressed.
“I can open with PTSD as a mitigating factor.” Matt tried. “Focus on his time at war.”
“Trauma is gonna get the same response as insanity.” You shook your head. “He won’t go for it.”
“I don’t exactly see you adding anything useful.” Matt spat back.
“I swear to God, Matt, you need to stop trying to make everything into an argument.” You said through gritted teeth.
“Both of you quit it.” Foggy mumbled.
“So wait.” Karen cut in and you let out a thankful sigh. “You think the war is what made Frank the way he is?”
“It doesn’t matter what I think.”
“Because it’s nothing fair.” You nodded.
“Y/N.” Foggy groaned.
“It’s true!” You threw your hands forward. “He thinks Frank is broken or a lost cause. He’s a hypocrite.”
“How am I a hypocrite?” Matt scoffed. “It’s not like I’ve killed anyone.”
“No, but if it was Exodus on trial, you’d be turning over every goddamn stone looking for a chance to help, right?”
“This isn’t about her!”
“It’s always about her!”
You felt the heat rising up your neck so you turned away and closed your eyes tightly, hoping to clear the red sparks facing across your vision.
“Will you two just stop?” Foggy shouted, so suddenly it made you jump. “You two both wanted to take this case so put aside whatever you’re dealing with and work together. Because I will not let your stupid little argument sink this firm!”
You took a deep breath and turned back to your friends, running a hand down your face.
“You’re right… You’re right, I’m sorry.” You nodded and reached to pat Foggy’s arm.
“Our only goal is to reduce the charges and set precedent.” Matt explained, clearly not feeling a need to offer any apology of his own and it made you frown. “Castle’s made a lot of enemies so if he goes into general population-“
“He’s as good as dead.” You cut in plainly and leaned your hands on the table. “PTSD could potentially open the door to somewhere more secure…”
“Somewhere he can get help and doesn’t end with him killing anyone else.” Matt added.
“None of us really know what Castle saw over there so it’s technically possible, yeah… And research suggests that PTSD can be triggered by new stressors.”
“Like losing your family.” Karen finished.
“It’s not great but it’s something to start with.” You nodded. “Not a bad idea, Matt.”
“I’ve gotta get to work on this opening statement but we need to find out if Frank will be on board with this.” Matt said as he gathered his papers and headed out.
You had to clear your throat to cover your scoff. You didn’t want to argue with him again.
“I’ll go.” You pushed yourself off the table, thankful for the excuse to leave. “I know he’ll talk to me.”
“I actually wanted to talk to him too. I might’ve found something” Karen piped up and you nodded.
“You sure about that? You two going?” Foggy asked as you were slipping between Matt and Karen in the doorway.
“Yeah.” You called from the other room. “I’ve never really been scared of him anyway.”
“Maybe you should be.” Matt argued.
“Does Exodus scare you?” You countered and he frowned at you. “You have to recognize they use the same ideologies, making sure people suffer their consequences and all that dramatic stuff. They’re both just the one with a bigger stick.”
“What?” Karen made a face.
“It’s something Howard Stark used to say, I guess. I read it in from old interview. He said that peace just means having a bigger stick than the other guy… They’re not afraid to bring a big stick.” You shrugged. “And let’s be honest, the Kitchen kinda needed it.”
“Well let me get you the list of questions I’ve been working on before you guys take off.” Foggy said and disappeared into his office.
“Y/N.” Matt said as he tapped your arm.
“Mhmm?” You answered, not looking at him but pretending to be very intently searching for something in your bag.
“That night with Elektra at the.. the Roxxon Gala.” He said quietly, leaning in so no one else would hear.
“Yeah. What about it?”
“The way you… The way I was… How we..”
“I don’t think we need to talk about any of that here.”
“Y/N.”
You knew exactly what he was getting at. He was worried you knew he was Daredevil - or just worried about what he could do as a blind man. And you figured he was piecing together that you weren’t just an orphan on the run. Maybe he was connecting the dots to your own secret, so feigning ignorance would be the least confrontational option.
“Matt, just-“ You finally looked up. “If you’re waiting for me to make a big deal about it or try and confront you or out you about anything, then you’re worried for nothing.” You watched as his brows furrowed but he said nothing so you kept going. “I don’t care what you’re doing. I don’t care if you’re sleeping with Elektra again or whatever has you fawning over her all over again.”
“That’s not what I-“
“It doesn’t matter. What we did doesn’t matter either because it was all fake.” You cut in firmly.
“Was it?”
“It wasn’t?”
“Not all of it…”
“What?” You asked softly before shaking the thought from your head. “No. No, you can’t do that to Karen. You need to make damn sure that you’re picking the right girl this time. Because I think we both know you screwed up last time you picked Elektra over m- … over anyone else.”
You reached for the clipboard Foggy came back with. “She told me that you said no.. To helping her the first time.”
“I did.” He insisted.
“Try to stick to the script. Please.” He stared pointedly.
“I will give it a shot. But I make no promises. Maybe I’ll get some inspiration, who knows…” You smiled deviously as you glanced over the sheet and directed your next muttered sentence to Matt. “And I actually thought you would’ve meant it but you’re wrapped around her finger just as tight as before.”
“Y/N.” He tried.
“You sure about this, Y/N?” Karen asked gently.
“I'm not one to pawn off the work with an excuse.” You chuckled before glaring at Matt as you headed out the door.
“I’m serious about the script!” Foggy called out as you were closing the door.
You paused to stick your hand back in, flipping him off. The small action made your office laugh and you smiled at the lighter atmosphere. Even if it was only a fleeting moment, it was a nice change compared to the constant tension among you all.
Security clearance at the prison was quick, though they took your paperclips. You kept your head high as you followed the guards through the halls, ignoring the few catcalls and whistles. When you got to the room, Frank was already there.
“Hey.” You smiled slightly.
“Princess.” He nodded.
“Please don’t do that here.” You groaned and sat at the table. “You’ll get me in trouble.”
“That’s what you’re worried about getting in trouble for?” He offered a half smile.
“Anyways.” You said pointedly as you pulled some papers from your bag. “We’ve been looking over similar cases with the same or at least similar legal precedent and we were thinking if there was someone from possibly your military unit that could speak to your service.”
“What’s that got to do with anything?”
“Character witness.” You answered smoothly. “Pretty much, someone who knows you and can speak to what you’ve been through, stuff you saw over there, things you had to do…”
“PTSD, huh?” He chuckled in disbelief.
“Unless you wanna plead insanity and hope that miniscule acquittal rate works in your favor.” You countered with a shrug, which earned you an annoyed mumbled response. “It’s the best shot we have at the moment. Unless you have some other idea?”
“Don’t do that. It’s an insult.”
“A lot of veterans experience it. I probably have some, too. It’s possible that-“
“I’m not talking about me. I’m talking about them. It’s an insult to people who are actually going through it.”
“Getting shot in the head counts as trauma, Frank.” You scolded. “So does knowing your entire family was murdered. Pair that with your service and it’s a viable defense.”
“Y’know what? I see what you’re doing, Y/L/N. You wanna sit here and label me as some crazy-ass combat vet who-“
“I’m not trying to label you at all, Frank.” You cut in firmly. “What I’m trying to do is help you find out the truth about your wife and kids. But if you don’t work with me, then we have no chance. It won’t matter who killed your family because you’ll be too goddamn busy wasting your life in a shitty little jail cell. Every day will be another fight for your life, because let’s face it, you’ve pissed off almost everyone in this city. And you alone are gonna face repercussions for every fight you’re in, whether you start it or not. Is that really what you want? Because I can walk out and hand your ass right back to the lapdog of a Public Defender and not lose a second of sleep over it.”
He chuckled slightly and stared at you for a second, making you crack a small smile.
“Y’know, I think you’re nicer when Red’s around.” He teased and your jaw dropped.
“Never say that to me again.” You laughed. “God, you know he probably heard that.”
“Yeah, he probably did.” He nodded with a small smile.
“He’s gonna rub it in if I ever see him again.”
“I thought you two made nice with each other that night. What happened?”
“You really think now is the time to talk about this?” You raised your brows in accusation.
“Unless you wanted to go and get drinks.” He joked.
“Nah, I don’t even think Josie would want you there.” You chuckled and dropped your eyes to your fingers that began drumming against the table. “We just… We’re on different paths and it’s more prominent now, I guess. And he’s been lying to me and I figured it out… I figured out everything.”
“Everything?” He asked knowingly. “Is that why you and Murdock can’t seem to get along either?”
“Wait, how did you know?”
“C’mon, it was the… the voice. He don’t hide that the way you do.”
“Now you see why the accent is a thing.” You nodded. “I haven’t told him that I know anything but I’m pretty sure he can tell something’s up… Hence why everything’s an argument.”
“Look, I don’t know a lot about you two but…”
You lifted your eyes and found him staring at you, with something almost gentle in his expression.
“You two need each other. Any idiot could see that, even a blind guy. You’ll figure it out.”
You cracked half a smile.
“You’re getting soft on me, Castle.” You joked and he gave you a sound of disagreement. “You sound like Red, trynna be my shrink.”
He snorted a laugh.
“I think he got to you too, at least a little bit.”
“Maybe you two just need some couples’ counseling.” He shrugged with a lazy smile.
“Yeah? That a service you offer now?”
“Oh, yeah.” He nodded. “I do all that bullshit. What do you say, we get you on the books, huh?”
“Nah, I think you’re all booked up with the literal murder trial we’re in the middle of.”
“You’re the big time lawyer. Aren’t you supposed to be figuring out how to get me outta here?”
“That’s why I’m here, dumbass.” You leaned back in your chair and crossed your arms. “Trynna get you back to your successful counseling services.”
“I’m a regular Dr. Phil, yknow?” He shrugged and you laughed.
“Too bad we’re not together though.”
“You two bicker like you’ve been married for years.”
“Please. Never say that to me again either.” You chuckled.
There was a beat of silence as Frank thought about whatever it was he thought about.
“Colonel Ray Schoonover. My old CO. Ditch the PTSD defense but for a character witness, the Colonel, he’ll give you what you’re looking for.”
“Great, I’ll reach out… You got a backup in case he doesn’t answer?”
“Yeah.”
“You wanna give me a name?”
“I’ll give it if you need it.”
“You act like I’m gonna do something to your friends.” You rolled your eyes.
“Nah, I think you’d like that one a little too much.”
“I don’t think I wanna know what that means. Anyways, I have Karen coming in when we’re done. She thinks she has some major moving parts that people don’t want to be seen.”
“Alright.”
“Just be open to what she has to say… That’s all I ask.”
“That’s all, huh?” His brows raised.
“See you in the morning.”
You switched with Karen and headed back to your office. When you got there, you found Matt in his office and Foggy in his. You announced your arrival and Foggy was the first to call you over as Matt shut his office door.
“Look at these Dogs of Hell depos.” He said quickly, shoving the papers at you without looking up. “They’re practically written in crayon.”
“You think we can poke some holes in them?” You asked as you flipped through the documents.
“A blind man could.” He scoffed.
“So… Matt.” You joked and Foggy grinned. “I’ll go get him.”
You took the papers and offered a quick knock before entering. You noticed how quick he pulled his phone from his ear so you shut the door behind yourself and glared at him.
“It’s Elektra again, isn’t it?” You asked tightly and he sighed.
“Hey.” He said quickly. “What’s up? How’d it go with Frank?”
“Are you kidding me?” You chuckled in annoyance. “This is the most important case of any of our careers and it starts in the morning. Is your opening statement ready? Is it even started?”
“Y/N, I-“ Matt tried but you reached out and snatched the phone instead.
“What is it now?” You asked harshly.
“Hello to you, too.” She mused.
“Cut the shit. What’s going on?”
“That encoded page in the ledger.” She answered, though you could bet that sure had rolled her eyes. “This is our one chance to decrypt it before the Yakuza adjust their plans. Two hours, Barclay and Church. I’ll expect you both.”
“Vous dites que comme s'il savait qui je suis..” You said carefully. “Est-ce le fait ?” (You say that like he knows who I am. Does he?)
“You’ll have to show up and find out.”
You shoved the phone back against his chest.
“I’m not going and neither should you.” You said simply, even though you did wonder if you could make the time. Not even to help Elektra really, more to poke around and see if Matt knew anything he shouldn’t. “The Dogs of Hell depos are pathetic so Foggy thinks we can find something here. And if you don’t finish that opening statement before you go screwing around with her.”
“Y/N, that’s not what’s going on.”
“I don’t care anymore, Matt. I don’t. You want to throw everything away because of her again, that’s on you. I can’t help someone who is refusing to make a change and is willing to hurt anyone around him.” You shrugged. “But if that-“ You pointed firmly to his desk. “-isn’t done before your little date night, I’ll do it myself and I will lose a lot of respect for you.”
“I promise, I’ll take care of it.”
You left his office, slamming the door a bit harder than necessary. You dropped in a chair beside Foggy and began reading through the depositions with him, thankful that he didn’t ask any questions about Matt’s participation.
“Oh! What did Castle say?” Foggy asked suddenly.
“He won’t endorse PTSD, but I already figured that.” You explained. “I know he’s talking to Karen about some of the family stuff, probably can find some discrepancies. But he gave me the name of his old CO so that’s something. And if he doesn’t answer, he said he had another guy in mind.”
“That’s good but it’s still his word against whoever for the family stuff, and he was also shot in the head.”
“You have to think though… Why would he lie about something so traumatic happening to the people he loved? I mean, I know I couldn’t tell a lie like that about you and Matt.”
“I hadn’t really thought about it like that.”
“I know you don’t know him or trust him, but you can’t tell me that man didn’t love his family with everything he had..”
Foggy nodded as he digested your words but said nothing else on the matter.
You two combed the depos and were able to find a few inconsistencies. You found conflicting reports between members and some blatantly exaggerated details. You went home with the excuse of needing your laptop and began fashioning an opening statement basing it off the idea of the morally grey area majority of people operate under and whether the means can justify the ends, along with the way the system failed the Castle family. You were hoping to pull a sympathy card with the jury, try to get people to see why Frank did what he did rather than just seeing how he did what he did.
You worked relatively quickly to jot down your bullet points and wondered if you had time to meet with Elektra. Even though you one better than to get involved, it’d be a lie to say you weren’t curious.
It was about ten minutes after the time Elektra said when you got to the building. You passed two scantily dressed women ranting in what sounded like Korean. Given you weren’t fluent in the language, you were able to make out ‘rich asshole… arrogant… professor” and figured you were headed in the right direction.
As you entered the apartment, you found the man on the ground with Daredevil and Elektra standing over him.
“What’d I miss?” You asked as you moved between them to kneel at the professor’s side. The sound of your accent sent the bitter taste of fear to your mouth, likely from the man on the foot. You grabbed him by his chin and tilted his head to either side as you examined the blood on his face before shoving him away and standing.
“Our new friend, Phillip, is being a bit difficult.” Elektra explained. “He’s worried the Yakuza will kill him.”
“Then he’s worried about the wrong thing.” You shrugged before grabbing his robe and yanking him to his feet.
You walked him backwards until he hit the window behind him. You pulled a knife from your belt and pressed it under his chin, ensuring the tip dug into the soft skin at the base of his jaw while your elbow was skillfully placed against the center of his chest. He whimpered slightly as the blade broke skin and a small stream of blood leaked down the knife and over your gloves fingers. You slammed your free hand against the glass by his head, sending a threatening crack echoing through the room.
“How high are we?” You asked over your shoulder. “Twenty stories?”
“Thirty.” Daredevil - Matt - answered as he stepped closer.
“You’d make quite the mess.” Elektra spoke aimlessly as she peered out the window to the ground below. “More liquid than solid, I’d imagine. What say you, Ex?”
“Care to find out, Phillip?” You asked, jamming your elbow harder.
“Please.” He whimpered.
You raised your fist to hit the glass again but your arm was caught. You turned and saw Dared- Matt with a hand around your elbow. He pushed your arm down and hit the glass on his own. Your brows raised as the cracks in the glass deepened so you tapped your mask and waited the second while your lenses calculated the strength of the glass. With Matt’s hits and the weight of your body leaning into Phillip’s, the glass integrity was dropping every second.
Eighty one percent.
“I’ll pay you. I’ll do anything.” He whined.
“Once more.” Elektra said with an amused tune to her voice.
Another hit brought the glass to seventy percent.
“It’s gonna break.” Elektra mocked.
“It’s got a bit of give.” You tilted your head and she hummed in response.
Another hit. Fifty nine.
Forty seven.
Thirty two.
Twenty.
Eleven.
“Alright, I’ll do it!” Phillip panicked.
You listened as the glass continued to crack, just under the weight of his body being pressed against it. You tilted your head slightly as a small red alert flashed across your lens, signaling less than ten percent integrity. You let out a small chuckle as Matt grabbed you by the wrist you had across Phillip’s chest and pulled you away. You threw Phillip towards Elektra and while she talked to him about the ledger, you and Matt stayed by the window.
It shattered only moments after Phillip was away from it and you were hit with a cold wave, and it wasn’t from the new flow of air in the room. Looking over at Matt, you realized it was from him, though the specificity of the feelings were hard to place. He wasn’t afraid of what happened. He wasn’t angry with how far you were willing to go. He was upset that he let himself go that far. And even though you were still pissed beyond belief, you felt yourself feeling bad for your friend.
“You alright?” You asked lamely as you tapped the edge of your mask.
“Fine.” He pushed past you and it reminded you why you two were drifting apart in the first place.
“Придурок.” You grumbled and moved to stand with your friends while tucking your blade away. (Asshole.)
“Next one is tonight at 11.” Phillip explained. “Bay Ridge Rail Yard.”
“A train shipment?” You asked and crossed your arms. “What are they getting delivered by land? Yakuza get most things by water, no?”
“I don’t know. Doesn’t say.”
You rolled your eyes and lifted your hand, showcasing your Bite.
“I swear! It doesn’t say!” Phillip panicked and threw the paper at Matt’s feet as he put his hands up in surrender. “I can’t help you anymore.”
“Then that makes you useless.” You shrugged and fired the blue shot at his forehead anyway, making him fall unconscious.
“Good luck, Elektra. Red.” You nodded to them.
“You’re not coming?” She called after you. “But you’ll miss the fun!”
“My world doesn’t revolve around what you need. I have a job that requires my attention for tomorrow. I can’t exactly do well if I’m up all night fighting Yakuza, now can I?”
“So what?” Matt scoffed. “You’re just gonna… run away from this?”
You froze at the elevator.
“Excuse me?” You sneered over your shoulder.
“You heard me.”
“You got a lot of nerve to try and talk shit to me.” You said firmly and tried to keep your anger under control, spinning on your heels to see them both coming towards you. “I didn’t even want to be here because I have more important things to worry about. But you, I bet, chose to be here instead of your regular life. Didn’t you?”
“Watch it.”
“I should watch it?” You laughed in disbelief. “I’m not the one bending over backwards at her beck and call, am I? Tell me.. Does your little girlfriend from your office know you’re with her every night?”
“My office? … What do you know?”
“Я все знаю.” You smirked triumphantly, any importance of your friendship slipping your mind. “Tell me. Does your girlfriend know you kissed Y/N at that little party?” (I know everything.)
“What?” He spoke softly.
“Enough of this lover’s quarrel.” Elektra stepped between you two. “Exodus, I need your help. Please. You said you would help us with the Yakuza.”
“Not at the price of my career.” You reasoned. “Besides, you have him as your lap dog. You don’t need me.”
“I’ve always needed you.” She reached for your hand but you backed away. “You’re my friend, believe it or not.”
“I don’t…” You groaned and ran a hand over your mouth. “I don’t need this shit. Friends or not, you can’t expect me to do everything with you.”
“Come with us, find what’s on that shipment, and then decide if you’re done… Y/N didn’t go through all that trouble to get that ledger for us not to follow it all the way through.”
“Ты сука.” You muttered as the elevator popped open. “This is better be quick.” You stepped in, allowing them to follow. (You’re a bitch.)
It was easy enough to get to the train yard and find the shipment. You hung back and allowed Matt and Elektra to do all the heavy lifting. They chatted about what was in the car, but a scan with your mask showed nothing worthwhile. You almost laughed when they opened the car and nothing but sand spilled out.
Matt was quick to pull you two away when he heard people coming. You had half a mind to yank your arm away and stay where you were, but you knew you’d be fighting alone, and what was the point in that?
You three snuck off to the nearest platform and waited for the guards to arrive. Utilizing your mask, you saw three men incoming, one for each of you.
You acted first, ducking the swinging barrels of their guns before singling one man out. You didn’t really pick out a target, rather you just kicked out at the first one you saw.
Your foot connected with the side of their head and he nearly fell to the ground as his gun clattered from his hands. Before any of his friends could come to his assistance, Elektra and Matt moved in.
The man reached for a knife instead and you almost got sliced by it. You leaned away and stuck up your forearm to block his attack. You landed two sharp body shots before stepping under his raised arm and slamming your elbow against his jaw. You brought your forearm up from under his arm to slam against his wrist and send his knife flying from his hand.
You caught the knife easily and slammed your hand down to drive the knife into his leg. He groaned loudly but you ripped out the knife as you brought your elbow up into his nose, hearing a sickening crack. You hooked your arm behind his leg and quickly jerked his legs from under him, making him land hard on his back. You brought the knife down a final time into the center of his chest, twisted to the right, and pulled it out, leaving your fingers coated in blood while he coughed weakly before he died.
You tucked the knife into an empty slot on your holster and glanced around for your partners.
“At least eight more.” You announced as you helped Elektra to her feet. “You gonna keep up?” You teased with a small smile and she gave you a small laugh.
“I knew you’d have fun.” She grinned as she pulled up her mask.
“Bien sûr, mais j'attends sa conférence pour avoir tué ce type pour ruiner l'humeur.” You shrugged before ducking behind some pallets and she chuckled. (Sure, but I’m waiting on his lecture for killing that guy to ruin the mood.)
The next set of guards put up more of a fight than the first, though maybe it was due to their numbers. Matt and Elektra handled the uneven battles well, as did you. You ended up cornered with two men, one with dual blades and the other with a gun. You were trying to calculate a good attack - maybe one that didn’t kill them both - when the swordsman attacked first.
He swung one blade high and you were hardly able to get an arm up to block it. You were quick to pin his other blade underneath your foot. Using your free hand, you grabbed his raised wrist and turned into his chest to wrap his arm around yourself. You put your foot on the pallet in front of you and kicked off, spinning both of you until his extended blade punctured the gunman in the chest.
You slipped out of the embrace and kicked at his back to drive the original blade deeper into his friend. You lifted the discarded sword just as the man pulled the first out of his partner and turned on you, a new rage and determination burning through him. He muttered something, likely a threat on your life, before coming at you in full force.
His attacks were hard and fast, almost too much for you to dodge.
Almost.
He landed a quick slice to your cheek and he grinned viciously. You chuckled and wiped the blood away with the back of your hand before you moved in again. You ran at him and drove the sword through his foot. He bent over and yelled in pain, allowing you to plant hands on his back and flip over him. You gripped his shirt in your maneuver, pulling him into an awkward arch and you landed in a kneel.
You spun on your knees and he cried out as the movement spun his punctured foot, making the blood splatter across the floor. You changed your grip to hold him by his shirt front as you slammed your Bite against his neck and released the full voltage your weapon could manage.
You tried to regain your breath as you found Matt and Elektra again. You picked up the discarded gun on the floor and fired two headshots to the last two men Elektra was against.
“Took you long enough.” She said through her own heavy breaths.
“Thought you didn’t need me.” You chuckled and tossed the gun away, wiping the persistent stream of blood from your face.
Glancing down, you saw the engraved ‘E’ was nearly unrecognizable with all the blood that’s come to stain it. You frowned at it, only for a moment as you remembered what you had been with Matt. Before you knew anything, before you even really suspected anything.
How had everything changed so fast?
“You’re hurt.” Matt commented as he stood in front of you.
“It’s nothing.” You said mindlessly, not realizing he was already in front of you.
He grabbed your face and turned you to face him and the action earned him a glare. His thumb grazed the fresh wound and you winced, pulling away from him.
“Doesn’t sound like nothing.” He scolded.
“Let me rephrase then.” You said sourly. “It’s not your problem. Good night.”
“What about your job in the morning?” Elektra asked and you could’ve sworn there was genuine concern there.
“They’ll never know.” You shrugged before hurrying home.
You stared in the mirror when you got home, standing in your bathroom with your suit still on. You realized you hardly recognized yourself. Scars and blood and bruises were nothing new when you saw yourself, when you thought of yourself. But there was something lacking in your eyes, something hollow.
You used that emotion, that disappointment, and let it manifest as healing. As repairing the slice on your cheek. The wound flashed a dingy gray - the same color you would paint that disappointment as - before it disappeared, your skin as smooth as it was before you went out with only the slightest of discoloration. You blew out a sigh and thought you’d feel better knowing it was as if it never happened but…
You still felt empty.
Only a few blocks away, Matt was cleaning up Elektra’s wounds. They chatted momentarily about all the scars when Elektra had to ask.
“And Y/N? Has she seen the scars?” She asked gently as the two sat on the couch.
She meant no harm with the question. As much as she loved Matt and wanted to be with him, she thought Y/N was better for him than she was. Despite them both having their secrets, she saw Y/N’s heart and her soul. Y/N, regardless of the blood on her hands and the trauma of her past, was still a good person in Elektra’s eyes.
“A couple.” Matt shrugged. “But I told her I got hit by a car.” He chuckled slightly as he thought of how she scolded him when he broke it open again.
“And she believed that?”
“Not at all.”
“Smart girl.” Elektra smiled. “Oh! I haven’t seen this one.” She pointed out a scar on his stomach.
“Yeah, the Russians like their knives.” He explained. “At least, I think it was the Russians.. Might’ve been Ex, actually.”
“She’s still Russian, no?”
“I don’t really know what she is.” He sighed.
“Is this the one Y/N saw?” She traced the scar on the opposite side of his abdomen.
“Yeah.. How’d you know?”
“It’s cleaner than the others. Her handiwork, I’m sure.”
He smiled slightly as he remembered how gentle her touches were, how she wanted to make sure she didn’t hurt him. But Matt knew she could never hurt him.
“I’m glad you two found each other again.”
“I don’t know… It just feels off lately. Ever since Exodus and I put Fisk away, she’s been different.”
“Have you asked her about it? I’m sure she’d talk to you.”
“She’s been arguing with me every chance she gets.” He shook his head sadly. “It’s like she’s pulling away. I don’t know what changed.”
“Maybe you did…” Elektra offered and Matt tilted his head. “Maybe being Daredevil has changed you and it’s changing your relationships. But I know you, Matthew, and I know you need Y/N.”
“I’ll keep that in mind.” He nodded slowly.
He didn’t know why Elektra cared so much about his relationship with Y/N. He knew how he cared about her and how he hated what was happening between them but still, it wasn’t Elektra’s business. Besides, he had Karen.
And friends fight all the time so it wasn’t the end of the world to fight with Y/N. His fight with Foggy after the reveal lasted for longer than this, didn't it?
But if it wasn’t the end of the world, why did it feel like it was? Like everything he knew - everything he wanted - was crumbling beneath his feet?
Why did it feel like Y/N knew something that he didn't and it was exactly that secret that was pulling them apart?
The next morning in the courtroom, everything bordered on being overwhelming for you. Shutting out the emotions of the entire gallery was tough given how high strung everyone was. The chatter blurred together to a crescendo of a buzzing sound and the feelings crashed into you like waves.
Hate. Admiration. Respect. Repulsion. Disbelief. Awe.
Every emotion was another sensation, another taste in your mouth, another fog in your vision, another lingering feeling across your skin that made you want to rip it all off. You had to block out everything while keeping yourself in check.
This was the biggest test of your life.
“Alright, what the hell is going on with him?” Karen whispered urgently to you and Foggy.
“It’s fine.” You said through tight teeth. “I can do the opening.”
“You sure?” Foggy asked. “You look like you’re gonna be sick.”
“All rise. Court is now in session.” The bailiff announced.
“Don’t have a choice now.” You muttered as you stood.
You all were instructed to take your seats and your fingers tapped the table as Reyes delivered her opening. Foggy and Karen muttered among themselves about Matt and where he was, but that was the furthest thing from your mind.
You knew he was probably in bed, Elektra wrapped in his arms. The thought - mixed with the influx of projected emotions - nearly tipped you over the edge. The only thing that drew you back was when Reyes neared your table, only to point out that Frank wasn’t a hero.
You had to bite your tongue to hold back your scoff but you knew she didn’t miss your heated glare.
“Ms. Y/L/N, are you prepared to make your opening statement?” The judge asked.
“She’s good.” Foggy sighed.
“So is she.” Karen nodded as you stood.
“Yes, Your Honor.” You smiled and stepped out from around the table. You decided to funnel the emotions you were being fed into your words, words you directed at the jury.
You needed to win as many of them as you could. And maybe it was wrong to manipulate the jury. It would probably discredit your entire case. But there was no way anyone would know.
Right?
“Ladies and Gentlemen of the jury.” You began simply, taking slow and calculated steps as you ran through the thoughts you had prepared the night before.
But all you could picture was that stupid fight with the Yakuza at the train yard and you felt a slight burning of your cheek.
“Today makes the beginning of a landmark case… Today marks the start of something major for more than New York. I stand here, with my colleagues, in the middle of the case of our careers, to be honest with you all.” You chuckled nervously and you noticed a few jurors lean forward in interest and it was like you could see your words floating through the air and into their ears.
“I want to ask you all to imagine being young, in a foreign county, with a gun in your hand and orders in your mind. On the other side of a blazing desert, someone wants you dead. They’re shooting. They’re screaming. Men and women beside you are dying. There’s blood and dirt and bullets and bodies, all around you… It’s a scary thing, but you endure it anyway.
“You endure it for the life that you have waiting for you, your life here with family and the people you love. People who love you and are the ones to hold you up when you get back and all you feel you can do is fall to their feet. Now.. I ask you to imagine those people being taken from you.
“This man-“ You gestured to Frank. “-endured exactly that. An excellent husband, a doting father, and a decorated marine that just wanted to pick up his life… But he couldn’t, due to local criminals. And the police and our very own District Attorney did nothing to stand up for them.
“Mr. Castle never got home. He moved from one warzone to another without warning.”
The side door opening drew your attention for a moment as Matt walked in, as disheveled as you would’ve expected.
“Today is not about vigilantes. It is beyond people in masks throwing punches in an alley. It is about how the justice system failed him.” You pointed behind you and saw a few jurors nod. “It is about one man becoming a pawn to cover up that mistake. Life is not as black and white as we want to believe. Most of us actually operate in that little grey area, be it going a couple miles over the speed limit every now and then or ignoring our seatbelt because ‘it’s just down the street’ or not mentioning the twelve-pack of sodas at the bottom of the cart.”
You saw a couple shoulders shake with a silent chuckle.
“The prosecution is out for blood, but to get that, they need to prove their case beyond any reasonable doubt. What I ask of you today is not to consider Frank as a hero or a vigilante or even a criminal. I ask to keep an open mind and think about the why. Think about the means rather than the ends and I believe you’ll see another side to this man. Thank you.”
“Pretty thick slice of bullshit there, Counselor.” Frank commented as you returned to your table.
You offered a small smile in return as you slid into your chair, now between Matt and Foggy. Karen reached over to give your hand a small squeeze and you smiled in thanks. Foggy clapped you on the back and Matt said nothing, as you expected.
“You’re welcome.” You replied and he scoffed slightly, though you knew there was amusement in the noise.
Later in the hall, you snapped on Matt.
“Are you serious, Matt?” You tried not to yell as you pushed him by his chest. “You promised me that you would have the opening statement ready and this is the shit you pull? God, I should’ve known you were going to bail on me. You knew I would cover your ass so you just blew it off, didn’t you?”
“No, that- that’s not what happened!” He tried to argue.
“That’s exactly what happened!” You laughed in annoyance. “You ran off to do God knows what and ignored this! Matt, you promised..”
“I’m sorry, okay? Really, I am!” He insisted, reaching for your arm but you knocked his hand away with a scoff. “I caught some of your opening statement and, Y/N, you were great!”
“You were amazing.” Karen added. “The jurors were practically hanging off your every word.”
“Yeah, I can have that effect on people.” You waved a hand and Karen gave you a wide-eyed, knowing expression.
“I'm serious! The sympathy card and the emphasis on that grey area of morality, it was incredible!” Matt continued and you couldn’t help but pick up on his frazzled state.
“Yeah, no thanks to you.” You scoffed and moved to a nearby bench, gripping it tightly as you leaned forward in hopes to find something to settle yourself. Your stomach was still churning and you were honestly afraid you would vomit. “Karen, who’s on the witness list for tomorrow?”
She flipped through the pages until she found it and passed it to Foggy, who was now sitting beside you and patting your back.
“You okay?” He asked gently.
“Little overwhelmed is all.” You nodded. “Who’s on it?”
He offered a small smile before peaking into the folder.
“Tepper.” He handed it back to Karen. “Reyes is gonna call the Chief Medical Examiner.”
“From rocky start to hail mary.” You sighed in relief.
“What do we know about him?” Matt asked quickly and your nerves sparked again, forcing you to grip the bench tighter.
“I showed Frank a copy of his family’s autopsy report.” Karen chimed in and you mouthed a ‘thank you’. “He says they’re faked and Tepper’s name is all over them.”
“That’s great!” Matt said. “We should get him on the record.”
“We already said that.” You cut in tightly, turning your head to glare at him. “And you would’ve known if you had bothered to come into the goddamn office! At least when I take off, I call someone to get caught up or I get to it early in the morning. I don’t make mistakes that impact everyone else! God, Matt, do you ever just think about anyone else other than whatever bullshit you’re doing?!”
“Y/N.” Foggy said gently. “Take a breath, alright?”
“Yeah.. Yeah, you’re right.” You nodded and rubbed your hands over your face.
Matt came over and knelt in front of you, reaching for your wrists. You didn’t have it in you to fight him on it and you felt his thumbs slide under your sleeves and gently rub against your skin. Usually you would’ve thought it was just a gesture to try to help you focus on something else, but now you knew what he was really up to. He was trying to read your physiological response.
You settled yourself as best you could. Not nearly flatlined but close enough that Matt couldn’t discern anything specific.
“Let me take the lead on it, okay?” He insisted.
“Like you took the lead this morning?” Foggy scoffed.
“You two have made your point, alright? Let me at least try.”
“Even if we get the false reports entered into evidence..” Foggy began.
“Which is a big if since it pertains to an unrelated crime.” You said plainly and Foggy pointed to you in agreement.
“Odds are slim he’s gonna incriminate himself.” He finished.
“Unless three brilliant attorneys can figure out a way to trip him up.” Karen tried.
“More like two, since one of us isn't really present.” You muttered and pulled your arms away slowly to cross them over your chest.
Matt frowned but stood and stepped closer to Foggy.
“Y’know what? You want it? Knock yourself out.” Foggy gave in and stood. “But Tepper isn’t talking without a fight since the DA pulls his strings.”
“Not to mention he’s had plenty of time to bulletproof his story and we have, what, 12 hours to tear it down. I don’t know how we do that by tomorrow but go ahead, Matt.” You sighed and stood.
“Karen’s gonna catch me up and we’re gonna find a way.” Matt insisted. “I won’t let you down again, Y/N.”
“Whatever. I’m going back to the office and try to prep for the rest of this trial. Foggy?” You rubbed your eyes and let out a deep breath, feeling some of the stress and pent up emotions leaving with the exhale.
“Yeah, right behind you.” He nodded. “We can pick up food on the way, on me.”
“By the way, Matt. You look like shit.” You said simply before turning and leaving.
You and Foggy spent the night comparing reports from the medical examiner. You tried finding other discrepancies or repetitive claims that could be used as potential doctorings. You compared every report with every crime scene photo. You even took extra care to see if there was a mislabeled gun used compared to the actual gun used.
You had to ignore multiple calls from Elektra.
The trial the next morning was just as straining as it had been the day before, blocking out emotions and controlling your own. As Blake Tower finished his questioning of Tepper, you felt the vibration of his nerves.
“He’s nervous.” You muttered, thankful that you were seated between Frank and Karen instead. You glanced down at your papers and pretended to flip through them. “Look at how he’s biting his nails. Someone who deals with dead bodies all day doesn’t put their hands in their mouth like that… You think Matt can do this?” You turned to Karen.
“Yeah, he had some really good stuff last night.” She nodded.
It wasn’t long into Matt’s questioning before Tepper snapped about a confession and the gallery was cleared. Tepper confessed to everything, altering the autopsy reports on Frank’s family and an additional John Doe with multiple gunshot wounds from that same day. Your brain was trying to piece together who the unknown man could’ve been and why he mattered when Tepper’s next few sentences caught your attention.
“She said she didn’t give a damn who got to me before. If I didn’t tell the defense what really happened, she’d hunt me down and kill me.”
“Who told you this?”
“I don’t know… A woman. Her face was covered. Had some foreign accent.”
“Эта сука..” You mumbled and leaned your chin into your hand. (That bitch.)

Is It Over Now? | Matt Murdock x Reader
Masterlist
Pairing: Matt Murdock x Reader ; (hinted) Frank Castle x Reader ; Elektra Natchios x Matt Murdock
Summary: Matt cheated on you, and you are trying to navigate through it.
Warnings: Angst, no happy ending, break-up, mention of cheating, song references (Taylor Swift), inspired by 'Is It Over Now?', (some) Matt "slander", (somewhat) suicidal thoughts, alcohol consumptions, hint at smut
Word Count: 1.7k
A/n: 1989 TV came out and I am losing my shit. Is It Over Now? Is my new favorite song and I just had a brain fart that made this. You can read this if you're a Swiftie and catch the references or just read it without listening to the song. It works either way.

It wasn’t supposed to end like this.
To be fair, there was a time when you thought it would never end. The thought of ever having a last kiss with him would have killed you back then.
He told you that you were the love of his life. You believed him. He was yours, certainly. You can’t deny that.
You were happy, you laughed and cried together, and part of you figured that if you ever broke up, you would find a way to work through it somehow.
Maybe in another universe, you are still together. Maybe in another universe, you two are still friends. Maybe in another universe, you never had to lose each other.
In this reality though—in this brutal, unforgivable reality—everything changed in a matter of a day. And there is nothing you can do about it now.
Your flower was withering in secret, and you didn’t realize what it was doing to you. Every time you woke up alone, every canceled date, every time he called you and told you he wouldn’t make it home tonight, it was sure to build up to this.
But this, whatever the hell this is, it hurts beyond compare.
He said you were a rose, but now that you look in the mirror, you only see a rotten mess.
The past few months have done this to you. He has done this to you. The paper airplanes crashed and burned. There is nothing left but pure bitterness and this hatred you have toward yourself and him; you just want to land your fist in his face, and then maybe your own because how could he hurt you like that after making you love him so very much?
You loved him so much, but now you doubt he ever loved you back.
Date after date, coffee after coffee, nights spent together on his couch and in his bed, sharing laughter, sharing tears, it all feels like a hoax now.
You held him when he was unconscious, stitched him up and told him he was going to be okay. Where was he when you were bleeding out from your own battles? You wonder.
His smile used to be your safe haven, the epitome of innocence and strength, but now it only makes you angry. It makes you resent him. You shouldn’t, you really shouldn’t, but you still do.
So much has changed, and all it took was one day.
One day.
Three hundred days, all wasted in one.
If you think about it, you spent almost an entire year attached to each other’s side. You moved in together. You kissed, you had sex, you shared secrets you wouldn’t have told anyone else. You helped him hide away from the world, from his enemies, made the world go quiet, and comforted him while he cried. You waited up, you worried, and you almost lost him more times than you can count, and you still stayed.
When no one else would take a chance on him, when he felt everyone was against him and going to leave him, you acted as his rock. You stayed.
You thought he was the one.
And then it just… ended.
You gave him the benefit of the doubt when you found her in his dress shirt on his leather couch. The very same couch you two often shared passionate nights on, but at the same time it used to be a symbol of so much more than that.
You let him explain. He explained that she got seriously hurt after showing up out of nowhere, and he just wanted to help without putting you at risk. You believed him because that is the kind of man he was in your head. He was going through some things, things you couldn’t possibly understand, and she was the connection. You tried to understand. In the process of understanding him though, you lost yourself.
That is something you will never forgive him for. Making you care, making you love him, and unintentionally making you give up on yourself while he continued to break your heart.
You never wanted this to end, never wanted him to go, but in the end, it was the only way. Sticking around wasn’t an option anymore, you have to remind yourself.
He did the one thing he promised he would never do. He broke your heart and your trust into a million pieces that you are now left to pick up on your own.
You didn’t want to see it before. You were too in love to open your eyes.
He wouldn’t do such a thing, right? You remember repeating that to yourself, to your friends, to Foggy and Karen, but Karen saw him with her, too, and she gave you little hope.
Still, you believed in him. You believed in his morale and his faith. You had faith in him, not even in God but in him and the man he pretended to be—and somehow, he still picked up the knife when you weren’t looking and buried it in your back.
There were so many signs, but you were blind. So many flashing lights. Red flags. Screaming voices in the back of your head begging you to think. You were in a forest full of trees, yet you saw nothing.
When you came home to find his lips on hers, that’s when you knew. Too little, too late.
He called your name. He told you, “This isn’t what it looks like!” But you lost count of the times he used the same line in relation to her.
To anything, really. He always knew how to talk his way out of something when you were together, although back then, it was mostly harmless.
“I trusted you,” you remember saying. You couldn’t even cry. “And you turned right back around and fucked her!”
“It was just a kiss,” he argued.
“Are you sure about that? ‘Cause if I ask Elektra, I’m sure she will tell me the truth.”
“No,” Matt was adamant because he could hear your heart breaking.
The way you spoke to him was so eerily quiet. That was how he knew he lost you, and he tried to fix it with nothing but his hands.
But that is not how you fix a broken vase. That’s how you make it worse and hurt yourself in the process.
You remember him opening his mouth, having the audacity to apologize. “I’m sorry,” he said.
“No. Fuck you, Matt!”
You tore the necklace with his initial off your neck and tossed it at his feet. You couldn’t even look at it. You wonder what happened to it after he picked it up.
“I trusted you. I gave you the benefit of the doubt. I was there when no one else was, and this is how you repay me?” you said.
You should have never let him fool you.
At least you had the decency to keep your lonely nights to yourself.
“Sweetheart, please,” Matt tried to beg again.
You wouldn’t let him. Thank God you were strong enough to withstand the tears in his eyes.
“You’re a fucking traitor, Matthew Murdock,” was one of the last things you said to him. “I wish we’d never met.”
Three hundred days. You fell in love. You finally knew what love felt like, and then…then he turned around and fucked it all up.
“We’re done.”
Some days, you still regret it, but if it was so easy for him to toss all this time together down the drain, he probably wasn’t worth it.
But God, you were so in love.
Sweet nothings whispered in your ear are gone now. You’re all alone in your bed. No one to cuddle, no one to touch. It has been a while since you heard someone say, “I love you,” and mean it. You felt loved until you didn’t. Until the life he led ate him up.
Instead of talking, instead of fighting with you, he drove you into a tree. A car that didn’t need sight, and still he crashed. It was winter then, the snow painted red by the blood of your broken heart. Your favorite dress torn up as you tried to escape. He reached for you the same way you reached for him, but you weren’t there. And he wasn’t there when you needed him most.
Part of you feels bad. You could have worked through this if he hadn’t kissed her. Or maybe you wouldn’t have. In the end, it killed you. It killed him.
You killed each other.
Though there are still days when you think about jumping off of very high somethings just to get his attention. Just for him to see you. To come to rescue you. It is a hurtful and selfish thought. Yet, you can’t help it.
He was your first true love.
Your mind keeps repeating the same sentence: It wasn’t supposed to end like this.
“You’re the best thing that ever happened to me,” he told you once.
He searched for something greater in the bed of someone he loved before. You weren’t his first love. You should have known he would say that and not mean it.
But when exactly did you go wrong?
Was it over when he stopped coming home at night? Was it over when he forgot your anniversary? Was it over when he canceled your birthday dinner? Or was it over when he shoved his throat down his ex-girlfriend’s throat in front of you and acted as if it didn’t matter? Was it over then?
“Another one for the lady,” a voice pipes up beside you.
Your empty glass of tequila disappears, now replaced by a full one. In your drunken haze, you see a head of brown hair, and his smirk makes you wonder if there’s more to him than he lets on.
“Thank you,” you murmur, tipping your glass to the stranger.
“Nah, don’t thank me.” He sits down next to you. “You look miserable.”
“What if I am?”
“I’d tell you I know the feeling.”
You huff but offer the stranger your hand with a mention of your name.
He smiles. Your name rolls off his tongue effortlessly. “Frank,” he introduces himself in return. “Castle.”
“Nice to meet you,” you say.
Broken people make bad decisions, but whether it was over when he took her right there on his couch, or it was over when you told him it was doesn’t matter.
It is over now, and all you want to do is forget.
You need to forget Matt Murdock.
And if this stranger called Frank needs to unbutton your blouse to help you do so, you will gladly follow him home.

Tumblr media
It was almost crazy to think that just over a year ago, you thought your relationship with Matt Murdock was over for good.
When you had awoken that following morning by his side, head clear of the rage and lust induced haze you had been captured in, all that was lingering was a heart heavy with hurt and stinging with betrayal. You had silently collected all of your belongings, pressed one last kiss to Matt’s lips, and granted his peaceful sleeping form one final glance before leaving your spare key on his entry table and disappearing into the twilight.
All of his words still echoed in the back of your mind, but so did his actions. The promise of marriage was eclipsed by the cherry lip stain on his collar. The prospect of a family was diluted by the scent of an expensive perfume that didn’t belong to you. The vow of faith and love was broken by yet another lie.
You loved Matt, more than you had ever loved anyone, and more than you ever thought you could love another person. You knew deep down that he was a good man. You tried to believe that he would never intentionally hurt you. But it had gotten to the point where you couldn’t ignore the ache he left in your chest.
You needed time to try to forgive him. You weren’t even sure if you could forgive him at all. The cut he’d made ran deep, and you couldn’t decide if it was because he’d made it with her blade, or if it was simply his own that had been slicing away at the same spot over and over and over. Regardless, you needed time. Time away from him; to heal, to think, to decide.
But Matt Murdock had never been a man of patience.
For two endless weeks your phone constantly lit up with his name, filling up with messages containing apologies and desperate pleas. You started arriving early to work and left later than usual to throw him off your schedule. You had the receptionist bypass all his calls and made security aware that he was not welcome in your office. You ignored all the usual spots that he knew you frequented, and especially the ones you went to together. For the first time in over a year, you locked all your windows to ensure he couldn’t slip through in the middle of the night. You blasted music through your headphones so you didn’t have to hear the pain in his voice as he called out your name, fist banging away at your front door so hard you were certain he was going to actually break it down.
It was torture. Even though he had been the one to wrong you, a piece of you felt guilty. You could hear the terror and remorse in his voice when he stood outside your door, begging for forgiveness, chanting your name over and over as if you were the deity he worshiped and needed absolution from. It left a bitter taste in your mouth to be yet another person to turn your back on him, but through the wave of your sadness came the tide of anger, reminding you that he had done this. He had forced your hand. He made a choice, and you had to make yours.
The guilt from also having to ignore Karen and Foggy weighed heavily on your chest. They knew what had happened. You had just as many sympathetic voicemails and unanswered texts from them asking if you were okay, and if you wanted to talk. You hated not being able to lean on them when you were at your most vulnerable. They were your family just as much as Matt was, but you couldn’t talk to them or be around them. They just reminded you of him. A huge part of you resented him for that, for making you feel like you couldn’t go to the two other people you loved most in this world for comfort because of what he did. You had spent the past few years building your entire life around Matt, and he had selfishly sent it crashing to the ground, leaving you completely isolated beneath the debris.
For two long weeks, you felt trapped beneath a heavy blanket of depression you couldn’t seem to find your way out from.
And then she happened.
How Elektra had managed to break into your apartment when Matt couldn’t, you weren’t sure, but the day you came home to find her in your living room with a bag of your things packed by her feet, you were stunned silent.
“I need you to come with me.”
“What? Why?”
“Because Matthew is an idiot and he’s put you in danger. We need to go. Now.”
She didn’t even give you a chance to hesitate, gripping your overnight bag into one hand, and forcing you out your door with the other. The ding of the elevator dropping you to the lobby seemed to wake you out of whatever trance she had put you in, and you stared at her in confusion as you stood firmly outside the metal doors.
“I don’t understand. What are you doing here? Where are we going?”
“I’ll explain when we get there. We need to move.”
“I don’t-“
“Listen. You don’t know me. You’ve got no reason to trust me. But right now, I am trying to save your life. So if you’ll please-“
“Why?”
Elektra paused for a moment as she looked at you. The annoyance on her perfect features vanished slowly, taking in the pain and confusion that were clearly plastered on yours.
“Because you’re important to Matthew, which means you’re important to me.”
Elektra filled you in on everything the moment she had secured you away in a penthouse uptown that was registered under an alias. What she and Matt thought were the Yakuza had ended up being a much older and sinister organization called The Hand. They were into some freaky cult shit that you didn’t quite understand, but you got the gist that they were powerful, and extremely dangerous. They were also everywhere. They had tracked her and Matt, and a man named Stick that had trained the two of them, back to Matt’s apartment the night after the gala. They had been tracking him ever since, and because he had continuously been going to your office and apartment, they knew all about you.
She even told you the truth about how she had met Matt, and how it had all been a set up by Stick to bring him back to their side; to fight the war that he had been warning them both about.
“I don’t know what Matthew has told you about me. Probably nothing good. But I need you to know…I did love him. That’s why I left. I realized…he wasn’t like us. He would never be like us. He was too…good. He didn’t belong with Stick and I. I didn’t want to be the one to put that light out inside of him. I didn’t want anyone to. I didn’t mean to cause any trouble between the two of you the night of the gala. I wasn’t aware that he hadn’t told you that I was in town, or what we were doing. I swear I was only trying to protect him.”
There was a glimmer of regret dancing along Elektra’s waterline, and you could see her own pain shadowing the faint smile on her lips.
“You weren’t the one that lied to me.”
Elektra blew out a breath as she took a seat in front of you, dragging her teeth along her bottom lip as she nodded.
“Matthew always has pure intentions. I know that. But for someone who is incredibly intelligent, he’s also a complete dumbass. He tries so hard to do the right thing…but he doesn’t stop to think about if he’s doing it the right way. Look I don’t…I don’t know anything about the two of you, and I’m not telling you what to do, but I can tell you that he is absolutely in love with you.”
“So…you didn’t come back to New York for him?”
“For his help, yes. To rekindle whatever we had, no. But for the record, even if I had, I wouldn’t have stood a chance in Heaven or Hell against you.”
There was something oddly comforting about Elektra’s words and the timid smile on her lips. It eased some of the tension pent up in your body, and you felt a little lighter as you let a deep exhale out through your parted lips. Nibbling on your bottom lip, you glanced over at her as you anxiously twisted a ring around your index finger.
“I…thank you. You…you didn’t have to…do all of this. I hate to even ask anything of you when you’re already doing so much for me but…can you just…not tell Matt I’m here? I’m not ready to talk to him yet.”
Elektra flashed you a pitiful smile as she gave a slight nod of her head.
“Of course. It’ll be our little secret.”
It only took Matt three days to figure out that Elektra had been hiding you, and as he burst through the front door of her penthouse, he was absolutely incandescent.
“You have got to be fucking kidding me. You’ll have a sleepover with her, but you won’t talk to me?”
“Watch your tone, Matthew.”
Elektra glared over at Matt, tightening her grip on the knife in her hand that was hovering over a cutting board filled with various ingredients.
Matt furiously tore off his glasses as he angrily pointed his finger in her direction, the top of his lip curling up into a menacing snarl.
“I don’t want to hear shit from you after you-“
“I protected her because you led the Hand right to her. You’re fucking welcome by the way.”
Elektra let out a deep angry exhale as she turned to face you with a sour pout on her lips. She gestured her head in Matt’s direction with a quirk of her brow.
“I can get rid of him if you’d like.”
“Excuse me?”
“I wasn’t speaking to you, Matthew.”
Sighing heavily as you let go of the whisk in your hand, you pushed the large bowl of batter forward on the kitchen island and wiped your hands off on a small towel. Rubbing your hands over your tired eyes, you waved your hand dismissively towards Elektra.
“It’s…it’s fine, Ellie. I’ll deal with him.”
Elektra eyed you for a moment before shooting another glare in Matt’s direction. She dropped the knife onto the cutting board, wiping her hands off on the same towel before clasping them together loudly.
“Right, well, I’ll leave the knife out just in case. Remember the three main areas I taught you to stab. I’ll be upstairs if you need me.”
After you watched Elektra disappear upstairs into her bedroom, you turned around to face Matt. His eyes were absolutely wild with rage and his face was morphed into complete disbelief as he blanched at you.
“Ellie? Since when the hell is she Ellie?”
“Since she’s the only one around here that tells me the truth about what the fuck is going on.”
Matt clenched his fists at his sides as he stared blankly over at you, and you watched as a muscle feathered in his jaw.
“What did she tell you?”
“Everything you didn’t.”
You could practically feel the anger radiating off of him in waves, but you had more of a right to be pissed off than he did. Matt shoved his hand into his pocket, producing a shiny silver object that he held out in front of him between his thumb and index finger.
“What is this?”
Crossing your arms over your chest, you arched one of your brows as you looked at him.
“A key.”
Your key.
Matt’s nostrils flared as he clenched his jaw, quickly crossing the distance between you to stand directly in front of you.
“Don’t get smart with me. Do you have any idea how it felt to wake up that next morning and you were gone? All of you, your things, everything gone? And to find this on the table? Not even-“
“I’d imagine it was as shitty as you coming home covered in red lipstick and smelling like your ex lover's perfume. Or as shitty as finding out you lied about where you were and who you were with, and that you kissed her and lied about that too.”
Matt ran his hand through his hair quickly in annoyance before dragging it roughly down his jaw, shaking his head as he flung his arms up in the air with frustration.
“Goddamnit Y/N, we talked about that! We worked through it. Then you just…disappeared and ignored me for weeks. You won’t return any of my calls, you won’t open the door, I can’t even-“
“We didn’t talk about anything, Matt! You kept trying to justify your actions and completely ignored how I was feeling. We didn’t work through anything. You manipulated me and we fucked. That is not working through it.”
Matt sighed with exasperation as he stared at you incredulously.
“I did not manipulate you. Fuck, I told you that I wanted to marry you and have a family witn you-“
“In the middle of sex, Matthew! I don’t know if you even meant that, or if it was a heat of the moment thing. And don’t you dare say you didn’t manipulate me. You took advantage of the fact that I was frustrated and that you hadn’t touched me in weeks. You knew I would give into you. How do you think that makes me feel? That you completely ignored my feelings, manipulated me into sex for forgiveness, and filled my head with all those promises knowing that our relationship was in a bad spot. I can’t trust a word that you say because you can’t seem to stop lying to me.”
Matt’s anger evaporated the second he tasted the salt of your tears in the air. He hung his head between his shoulders in shame, shifting his weight from one foot to the other as the severity of your words nestled in the silence. Letting out a soft sigh, Matt’s tongue darted out to quickly wet his lips.
“You’re right.”
His hazel eyes were more clear without the cloud of vexation, and you could see the way they glistened with regret. Matt’s plump lips fell into a frown, and guilt seemed to tug the rest of his features down like gravity.
“I’m sorry. I swore to you that I wouldn’t lie after I told you the truth about me. I broke my promise to you, I betrayed your trust, and I disrespected our relationship. I’m so sorry, sweetheart. I never, ever meant to hurt you. I didn’t want you to get mad that I was working with Elektra. I didn’t think…I wasn’t thinking. I wasn’t considering your feelings. I shouldn’t have kissed her. I could’ve come up with another diversion. All of this could’ve been avoided if…if I had just told you the truth.”
Matt let out a shaky breath as his blank eyes glanced upwards, closing for a moment as he clenched his fists by his sides. A stray tear slipped past his lashes when he opened his eyes again, slowly lowering himself onto his knees before you as he reached for one of your hands to hold.
“I have been…absolutely fucking miserable these past few weeks, and that’s my own fault. I know that. I have hated not getting to feel your touch, or hear your voice, or be able to tell you how much I love you. I am so fucking sorry if I ever made you question how I feel about you, but Y/N I meant every word that night. You are the love of my life. You do belong with me. I do want to marry you and start a family. I swear to God, I will do whatever it takes to earn your trust back and your forgiveness. Just tell me what I have to do sweetheart, and I’ll do it.”
It broke your heart to see Matt look so distraught. It stung even more than he was on his knees begging for forgiveness instead of asking you to spend the rest of your lives together, but there was an undeniable conviction in his voice. It soothed the pang in your chest slightly to finally hear him acknowledge his fuck up, and apologize for it instead of getting defensive. Elektra had melted away the insecurity you had felt with her confession, and the frightened look that shattered Matt’s face showed you just how scared he was to lose you.
There was still a lot of work to be done on your relationship. It wasn’t going to be fixed overnight, and Matt was going to have to put in a lot of effort to earn your trust back, and prove to you just how much your relationship mattered to him. But you were in love with him, and you knew there was no one else for you but him.
“You can start by taking care of this…”Hand” shit. I’m not loving the fact that I’m being hunted by zombie ninjas because of my idiot boyfriend.”
Matt’s ears instantly perked up, and a lopsided hopeful grin stretched across his lips.
“I’m still your boyfriend?”
“For now. You’re dangerously close to being replaced by Elektra, though. She’s always bluntly honest, and her bed is way nicer.”
You never in a million years thought that your boyfriend’s ex-girlfriend would fight just as hard as he would to keep you safe, but Elektra had. She protected you from The Hand just as fiercely as Matt did, nearly giving her life for you both, and now she was securing the last button on the back of your wedding dress and staring at you in the mirror with a knowing smirk.
The morning you slipped out of Matt’s apartment heartbroken and desolate seemed like a lifetime ago as you prepared yourself to meet him at the altar in just under an hour.
“What’s on your mind, little dove? Got cold feet?”
Elektra quirked one of her dark brows as she stared at your reflection with her signature smirk. Karen had left the two of you alone to go check on Matt and Foggy, and she was helping you with your finishing touches.
After helping save New York, Elektra had stuck around, and to both of your surprises, and certainly to Matt’s, you two had become very close. The more you got to know the more vulnerable side of her, the more you felt for her. She wasn’t the villain that everyone had painted her out to be. She had been a scared little girl, manipulated with a promise of something resembling a family, only to be broken down and molded into something to orchestrate death and destruction instead. It wasn’t unlike what Stick had done to Matt. As a matter of fact, it was worse.
“If I said yes?”
Elektra hummed quietly as she moved your hair off your shoulder, leaning in to rest her chin on it as she wrapped you up in a hug from behind with a grin on her lips.
“Ever been to Paris this time of year? It’s beautiful. We could be at a private air strip before anyone even knew what happened. Matthew is fast, but he can’t outrun a Maserati.”
A grin broke out across your lips as you giggled, squeezing onto Elektra’s arms when she winked. You had never been more sure of anything in your life than you were sure that you wanted to spend the rest of your life with Matt Murdock. Both of you knew that. But you also both knew he was eavesdropping just on the other side of the church, and it was incredibly easy to rile him up.
As if on cue, Foggy suddenly burst through the door and pointed a finger at Elektra with an expression of pure irritation on his face.
“Whatever you’re telling her, knock it off. You’re scaring the shit out of him, and he’s already convinced enough as it is that she's not gonna walk down that aisle.”
“Oh relax, Franklin. Girls got to have their fun, yeah? Besides, I thought they called him the man without fear.”
Foggy rolled his eyes as he shut the door behind him, walking over to shoo Elektra away as he stood behind you and adjusted your veil down your back.
“Yeah, until it comes to her. Go head to head with the Punisher who's notorious for using automatic weapons with sticks? Sure. Take on a weird cult of ninjas that can’t die and like to use really sharp swords also only with sticks? Why not. Fuck it, let’s use every goddamn tall building in Hell’s Kitchen for parkour practice. But ask the woman I’m ridiculously in love with to marry me and put up with my shit for the rest of our lives? That’s where the devil seems to tuck his tail between his legs.”
Matt had been an absolute nervous wreck the night he proposed to you. He had brought you to the same restaurant that he had taken you to for dinner on your first date, and was fidgety the whole time. Every time you asked if he was okay, he swore up and down that he was, and you figured there was just something overwhelming one or several of his senses. But then you noticed that despite it being mid November, he was sweating as you walked hand in hand through Central Park, and his hand kept nearly slipping from yours. Finally, you stopped and turned to face him, placing your hand on his chest to steady him.
“Okay, what’s going on with you?”
“N-Nothing, I’m fine. Let’s keep-”
“No, you aren’t. You’ve been acting strange all night. You’ve been anxious and fidgety, and now you’re sweating.”
“It’s hot-”
“It’s November, Matthew.”
Matt’s lips parted slightly as he went to protest, but nothing came out. He was usually good at coming up with excuses on the spot, but whatever was going on with him had seemed to completely take over his mind. A soft sigh slipped past your lips as he averted his gaze to the ground, watching as he clenched his fist by his side. You took a step forward to place your hands gently on his cheeks to cradle his face.
“Matty, please talk to me. Is something wrong?”
“No, no nothing…nothing is wrong.”
“Then what is going on? What’s got you so worked up?”
“I’m not worked up-”
“Matthew.”
Matt let out a sigh of defeat hearing the tone in your voice, his tongue darting out to quickly wet his lips as he attempted to flash you a reassuring smile.
“Can we just keep walking please? There’s something I wanna show you.”
There was evident excitement in Matt’s voice, but it didn’t resonate with you. The way he kept dodging your questions was beginning to put you in a sour mood, conjuring up a bitter taste of realization that he was on the cusp of breaking an oath he had sworn to keep. Dropping your hands quickly from his face, you shook your head in frustration as you turned around swiftly to walk ahead without him.
“You promised me you wouldn’t do this anymore.”
You only made it two steps forward before Matt blurted out a confession laced with full blown panic.
“I’m in love with you.”
Immediately pausing, you turned around to look at him in complete confusion.
“I know that, Matt.”
Matt let out a heavy exhale as he rushed forward and took your hand into his, scrunching up his nose as he shook his head quickly.
“No, I…I mean…that I’m…fuck, this isn’t going right.”
Matt pinched the bridge of his nose as his lips pursed into a frown, and you eyed him curiously as you gave his hand a gentle squeeze.
“What isn’t going right? What are you talking about?”
“Will you just…come with me? Please? I really need to show you something.”
Matt’s face was twisted in what looked like agony, and the desperation in his voice made you nervous. You didn’t think you had ever seen him look so…terrified, not even that night at Elektra’s when he thought you were going to leave him for good. You allowed Matt to guide you further through the park, venturing off down a path only he seemed to know, and stopping once you reached a gate that was covered in ivy. He pulled a key from his pocket to unlock it, and pushed it open with a slight creak, gesturing for you to enter first with a timid smile.
A shocked gasp flew past your lips as you stepped inside. It was an isolated garden, completely closed in by ivy covered walls, lit up only with various strings of white twinkle lights and the glow of the moon. To your delight, there were several plants and flowers in full bloom, and the whole scene looked like a vibrant painting you would hang on your wall.
“I hear this place is beautiful.”
Turning around to face Matt, you noticed that he had taken off his glasses, and was apprehensively turning them over in his hands over and over. The timid smile was still plastered on his lips, but his eyes were nearly blown open with distress.
“I…it’s…I don’t even know how to describe it. How…how did you find this?”
“Karen did. It’s technically private property owned by the city, but Brett owed me a favor.”
The puzzlement on your face only grew as you stared at Matt, a soft laugh leaving your lips as you gestured around.
“Is this why you’ve been acting so weird? You didn’t think I’d like the surprise?”
Matt’s eyes darted back and forth blankly as he dragged his teeth along his bottom lip, swallowing thickly as he placed his glasses into his jacket pocket and took a few cautious steps forward.
“I…I hoped that you’d like it.”
“Matty, I love it. It’s so beautiful. But you didn’t have to be so nervous to show me this. You could’ve taken me to a random alley and I still would’ve loved it.”
Matt let out a breathless laugh as he shook his head, clicking his tongue against the inside of his cheek as he smiled softly.
“Then it wouldn’t have been special.”
A furrow formed between your brows as you looked at him, trying to decipher all the cryptic pieces he was laying in front of you.
“What wouldn’t have?”
Matt was silent for a moment as he fixed his gaze on your face, tilting his head to the side ever so slightly as he studied you. Finally letting out a deep breath, he reached out to take one of your hands, brushing his thumb delicately over your knuckles as a slow smile spread over his lips.
“I told you, I’m in love with you.”
“And I’m in love with you, Matty.”
Matt took a step closer as he brought his other hand up to cradle your face, a tender smile on his lips as he rubbed his thumb soothingly over your cheek. You couldn’t tell if it was the reflection of the lights in his eyes, but they looked glossy, almost as if he was about to cry, and it made you squeeze onto his hand tighter.
“You…are the first person that has ever truly understood me. The first that’s ever accepted and loved both sides of me. You’ve never shied away from one, or favored the other, or asked me to choose. You haven’t given up on me, even when I’ve given you plenty of reasons to. You are the best part of my day. I can’t tell you how…how happy it makes me to know that when I come home at night, you’re there waiting for me. And no matter what kind of day I’ve had, or how rough of a night it was, it…it doesn’t matter, because you’re there. You give me a reason to make it home. I can’t tell you how much I love that I get to fall asleep holding you and listening to your heartbeat, and start every day hearing your voice and kissing your lips. I have never felt as…happy…and light as I do with you. I want to spend the rest of my life feeling this way. I want to spend the rest of my life ending every night with you and starting every morning with you. I want to spend the rest of my life with you. So-”
Matt let out a shaky breath as he slowly dropped his hand from your face and tightly held onto your hand. You were already in tears from Matt’s words before, but the moment he dropped down onto one knee before you, the floodgates opened and a choked sob caught in your throat as your other hand flew up to cover your mouth.
“Y/N Y/L/N, will you marry me?”
“Oh my God, Matty…yes…yes!”
Matt blew out a shaky breath of relief as he closed his eyes for a moment, the tension in his shoulders evaporating right in front of your eyes as he let his head drop. You couldn’t help but laugh as you stared down at him in perplexity.
“Did you think I was going to say no?”
Matt rubbed his hand down his face to wipe away his own tears, letting out another breathless laugh and sniffling as he looked up at you with a goofy grin on his lips.
“Figured I had a fifty-fifty shot.”
Lips splitting into the biggest smile you had ever seen, Matt quickly rose to his feet and grabbed your face, capturing your mouth in a deep kiss as you gripped onto his jacket to hold him close. All of a sudden he quickly pulled away and shoved his hand down into his pocket.
“Oh shit, uh…sorry…I…here.”
Matt laughed nervously as he pulled a small velvet black box out of his pocket, opening it to reveal the ring inside. Your mouth fell open as a gasp escaped, and you gripped onto Matt’s forearm as fresh tears welled in your eyes.
“Matty…”
“Do…do you like it?”
“I…I love it. It’s…it’s perfect. How did you-”
“I had some help.”
Glancing up at Matt through your teary eyes, you watched as a bashful smile tugged at the corners of his mouth. Pulling the ring from the box, Matt gently grabbed onto your wrist with a shaky hand, and carefully slipped the ring onto your finger. It fit absolutely perfectly, and you stared down at it in awe as it dazzled beneath the lights. You were overwhelmed with so many emotions, and you didn’t know what to do other than grab Matt’s face and pull him down for a searing kiss.
The two of you gripped onto each other as if you were afraid the other might disappear if you loosened your grasp even the slightest. You were a flurry of lips and teeth, trying to devour the other’s desire, consuming the taste of happiness together. Matt laid you down in the soft grass of the garden floor and made love to you right there, intertwining his hand with yours that wore the symbol of his love and promise to you.
A burst of laughter ripped through your chest at that memory of Matt’s nervousness as you covered your mouth, staring at Foggy knowingly in the reflection of the mirror. Elektra’s mouth split into a huge grin as she rolled her eyes, pressing a quick kiss to your temple and giving Foggy’s shoulder a squeeze on her way to the door.
“Alright, alright. Let me go do damage control. I’ll see you both out there. Oh, and Y/N, darling?”
You turned your head to look over at her as she paused in the doorway.
“Yeah?”
A warm smile tugged at the corners of Elektra’s mouth as she stared over at you, leaning her head briefly against the door.
“You are the most beautiful bride I’ve ever seen.”
You pursed your lips slightly as your face twisted up faintly into an expression of gratitude, returning her smile with one of your own.
“Thank you, Ellie.”
Elektra flashed you a quick wink, closing the door behind her to leave you alone with Foggy.
“She’s right, you know. You do look beautiful.”
A smirk tugged at the corner of your mouth as you looked at Foggy in the mirror, arching one of your brows quizzically.
“Did you just agree with her?”
“That stays between us. This is a one time thing.”
Laughing softly, you turned around to pull Foggy into a tight hug, sighing in relaxation as his arms came around you to hold you securely to his chest. There didn’t seem to be anything that a hug from Foggy Nelson couldn’t fix. All of the pent up nerves seemed to dissipate from the warmth of his embrace, and you suddenly felt a million times lighter.
“Thank you.”
“You don’t have anything to thank me for.”
“I have everything to thank you for.”
“Well in that case, I think Foggy would be a great name for your future kid.”
A deep laugh rumbled in his chest as you giggled, pulling back slightly to peer up at him with a grin.
“I’ll put in a good word.”
After Foggy left you alone to go rejoin Matt and the others, you stared at your reflection in the mirror, smoothing your hands over your dress for the millionth time. A part of you was still in disbelief that today was the day you were marrying your best friend. Matt had sworn to not take the second chance you had given him for granted, and had been treating it as if it were sacred. He opened up to you about everything now, even the rough nights that plagued his thoughts, and the horrors he desperately wanted to protect you from. There wasn’t a single thought or emotion he hid anymore, and he’d even gotten better about finding balance between each of his lives. That wasn’t to say that you both didn’t struggle from time to time still, but your relationship was the healthiest it had ever been.
A knock against the door tore you from your thoughts, and a smile quickly spread across your lips at the sight of the figure leaning against the doorway.
“Hey big guy.”
Frank’s mouth split into a grin as he looked at you, giving a slight nod of his head in your direction.
“Hey darlin’.”
Turning away from the mirror to face him fully, you swallowed thickly as you smoothed your trembling hands down the sides of your dress and gestured to it.
“I look okay?”
Frank cocked his head to the side as he smirked, taking you in with his eyes as he took a few steps forward to stand in front of you.
“You kiddin’? You’re gonna knock Red on his ass.”
You didn’t hardly have any family outside of the chosen one you had made with Matt, Foggy, Karen, Elektra, and Frank. When you’d let it slip to him that you would be walking down the aisle alone, Frank instantly offered to be the one to walk you. He confessed that it would probably be the closest he would ever get to walking his own daughter down the aisle, and you graciously accepted without hesitation.
A smirk curled at the corner of your mouth as you let your eyes wander over his large figure, finally meeting his deep brown curious eyes.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen you so…”
“Dressed up, yeah yeah. Don’t get used to it.”
“I was gonna say not covered in blood.”
Frank let out a deep chuckle as he shook his head slowly, looking down at you with a dazzling grin on his lips.
“Figured I could behave for a few days so I didn’t mess up your pretty dress, yeah?”
“How generous of you.”
As the processional music started to play, the nerves you felt earlier returned full force, and you gripped onto Frank’s arm tightly as the reality of the situation started to sink in. This was actually happening. Matt was waiting for you on the other side of these doors, and in just a few moments, he would finally be your husband. Tears started to form in the corners of your eyes as your emotions started to catch up with you, thinking about everything the two of you had gone through together, and how it had all led up to this moment. Frank’s lips brushed against your cheek as he bent down to whisper into your ear.
“You say the word, and I’ll get you outta here. No questions asked, yeah?”
Gripping a little tighter onto his arm, you leaned into Frank’s embrace as a shaky breath left your lips.
“Where would we go?”
“Wherever you want, darlin’. I could hide you places even he couldn’t find.”
You swore you heard Matt groan loudly on the other side of the door, and you couldn’t help but giggle as you dipped your head back to look up at Frank. Taking a deep breath in, you exhaled slowly through your parted lips and nodded with a soft smile.
“I’m ready.”
Frank gave a slight nod as he leaned in to kiss your forehead, dropping his left eye in a wink as he smiled.
“Attagirl.”
“Frankie?”
“Yeah, sweetheart?”
“Don’t let me fall, please.”
Frank wrapped his right arm tightly around your waist, holding onto your hand with his left one as he squeezed it gently.
“Never.”
»»——— ———««
“As absolutely beautiful as you are in this dress, it’s time for it to come off.”
“You don’t wanna leave it on?”
“I’d love to, sweetheart, but it’s kind of in my way. Besides, it’s so pretty, I’d hate to ruin it with all the things I wanna do to you, Mrs. Murdock.”
A soft gasp left your lips as Matt gently sucked on that sensitive spot on your neck below your ear, and you could feel him grin against your skin when your heart skipped. He had taken every opportunity throughout the evening to call you that, or refer to you as his wife. Every time it hit your ears, a buzz of serotonin flooded your bloodstream and left you hazy.
“And what, exactly, is it that you wanna do to me, Mr. Murdock?”
Matt’s fingertips brushed lightly along the exposed skin of your bare back, causing a shudder to course through you while his nimble fingers delicately tugged the zipper of your dress agonizingly slow down your back. His stubble tickled against your cheek as he nuzzled your jaw, inhaling your scent deeply while leaving open mouthed kisses down the column of your neck.
“Fuck a baby into you.”
Gripping tightly onto his suit jacket, you were suddenly taken back to that night over a year ago when he’d first made that promise, and his words from that night flowed through your ears.
I’m gonna marry you someday, Y/N.
I will put a ring on your finger tomorrow.
I will put a baby in you tonight.
A fresh wave of mixed emotions glossed over your eyes, and Matt slowly pulled back to stare blankly down at your face with an expression of concern as he cradled your face in his hand.
“What is it, angel?”
“Nothing. It’s nothing.”
Matt tilted his head to the side slightly as his honey hazel eyes gazed down at you, tongue darting out to quickly wet his lips before they pulled into a timid smile.
“Was it the wedding you always wanted?”
Bringing your own hand up to cup Matt’s jaw, you pulled him in closer to touch your foreheads together as you whispered softly.
“Of course it was, Matty. You were the groom.”
Matt had been continuously asking you the same question all night, wanting to make sure you were absolutely happy with the biggest day of your lives. Honestly, it had been perfect. Karen had taken over as your unofficial wedding planner, and between her, Marci, and Elektra, you’d hardly had to lift a finger. Getting married in a church wasn’t a huge deal for you since you weren’t religious, but you knew how much it meant to Matt, and you offered to marry him in his church where his parents would’ve married. It was small and intimate, exactly what you both wanted.
The second you stepped through the open doors with Frank, Matt immediately started to cry. You were only a second behind him as soon as you saw him, the two of you gripping onto each other’s hands as Father Lantom led the ceremony, bringing everyone in attendance to tears as you exchanged your heartfelt vows. Matt had captured your lips in a deep kiss as soon as Father Lantom uttered his name, and he lightly smacked him over the back of the head with his bible to remind him that he was in church when the kiss started getting a little too heated for the house of God. Maggie had simply laughed, reminding Father Lantom that Matthew was indeed Jack Murdock’s son.
The reception was held at Josie’s where you had first met Matt over two years ago, courtesy of Karen. Foggy had drunkenly climbed onto the bar to deliver his best man speech which only drew further tears out of everyone from laughter by telling the most embarrassing story he could conjure about Matt from college, and also from the passionate gratitude he showered you in for making his best friend the happiest he had ever seen him.
Matt told me once he thought you were an angel created by God himself, and sent down from Heaven just for him, exactly when he needed you. I believe that’s true. There’s no other explanation for how perfect you are for him. Thank you for bringing my brother the happiness he’s always deserved. I love you both.
Karen could hardly contain her own tears as she spoke fondly about you and Matt, bringing even Frank and Jessica to tears with her sweet words.
I knew the night you met Matt that you loved him. I could see it in your eyes. Thank you for loving him the way that you do. I can’t tell you how happy it makes me as your best friend for you to end up with someone like Matt. Because I know he will take care of you, and protect you, and love you with everything he’s got, and I know you’ll do the same for him. I’m just so happy my two favorite people found each other.
“Today was the happiest day of my life. A day I never honestly thought would come, but I’m so happy it did, and I’m so happy it was with you. I wouldn’t change anything about it. I mean…apart from everyone offering to help you runaway, but.”
A loud laugh slipped past your ears at the annoyed look on Matt’s face, countered by the smirk that was threatening to spill across his lips. You gently squeezed his cheeks to purse his lips into a pout, leaning in to kiss them softly.
“You know they were joking.”
“No, Frank and Elektra were serious. They were actually gonna smuggle you out.”
Giggling softly, you shook your head as you leaned in to press your lips against Matt’s softly once more.
“Well I didn’t run, did I?”
Matt let out a deep exhale through his nose, shaking his head slowly as he pressed his forehead against yours.
“No. Still not sure why you didn’t.”
“There was cake.”
Matt rolled his eyes as he pushed himself up above you, and you giggled uncontrollably as you grabbed onto his tie to pull him back down towards you.
“I’m kidding! You know someone has to keep the Devil in line.”
Matt clicked his tongue against his cheek, narrowing his eyes slightly as he cocked his head to the side and stared down at you with a light smirk.
“That the only reason, then? Because you’re the only one that can?”
“I can think of a few more. Now, I thought you were helping me out of this dress?”
“I was.”
“Then be a good husband, Matthew, and help your wife.”
Matt’s eyes darkened considerably at the sultry tone of your voice, and a devilish grin took over his mouth as your beloved dimples settled in his inner cheeks. He was careful as he slipped the silk gown down your body, laying it carefully over the dresser before attacking your body with kisses once again. You frantically clawed at his jacket and dress shirt, blindly making quick work of his belt, already panting just from the idea of having your husband inside of you. There seemed to be a silent understanding between the two of you that neither of you had the patience for foreplay tonight, and all you both wanted in that moment was to be absolutely consumed by one another.
As Matt settled between your spread thighs, a wash of nerves made you shiver, and you found yourself placing your shaky palm on his chest over his heart to get his attention.
“Matty…did you…are we…you really want a baby with me? Right now?”
Matt tilted his head in confusion as he let his eyes blankly wander over you, placing his palm flat on the pillow by your head as he leaned in closer towards you. You and Matt had been talking more seriously about starting a family after you got engaged, and you stopped taking birth control a few months before the wedding to make sure it was fully out of your system for when you two were ready to actually start trying.
“Of course I do. Why? Did you change your mind?”
“No! No no, it’s not that. I just…you aren’t going to miss it? I mean…the city means so much to you, Matty, and-”
“Hey, you mean the most to me. You’re the love of my life, sweetheart.”
You wrapped your fingers around Matt’s wrist as he held your face, nibbling at your bottom lip as you let out a shaky breath.
“I know, baby. I just…I know how much you need that part of yourself-”
“Not anymore. All I need is you. I’m still protecting the city, and the people in it, everyday. I’m still helping people. But New York doesn’t really need Daredevil anymore. It has people to protect it, like Luke and Jessica. And Colleen, Danny, even Frank and Elektra. You need me. And the one thing I care more about protecting and keeping safe is you, and our family.”
“I just don’t want you to wake up one day and regret hanging up the suit, or feel any kind of resentment-”
“Sweetheart, listen to me. I could never regret anything with you. How could I feel even an ounce of resentment when you’re offering to give me the greatest gift in the world that I’ll never be able to repay you for, hm?”
Matt carefully wiped a stray tear away from your eye as you reached up to gently grab onto the back of his neck, pulling him down so that his chest was flush to yours as you whispered softly.
“I just want to make you happy, Matty.”
“You do, angel. Everyday. You are my happiness. Now, can I please make love to my wife?”
Matt took his time as he entered you, peppering kisses on every inch of your body he could find, moving his hips lazily as he fucked into you slowly to ensure you both felt everything. Interlacing your fingers together, he held your hands above your head and squeezed them tightly, repeatedly whispering into your ear how much he loved you, how beautiful and perfect you were for him, and how badly he wanted you to give him a baby. Matt pulled your legs tightly around his waist, angling your hips to reach the most delicious depths within you, spilling his seed into the deepest layer of your garden to plant the foundation for the family you both so desperately wanted together.
Neither of you could get enough, and Matt fucked you sweetly and slowly several more times into the early hours of the night until your bodies simply couldn’t take anymore. He refused to withdraw himself from you, keeping his soft cock nestled within you, preventing any ounce of your future he had emptied into you from slipping out as he wrapped his arms around you from behind. Matt placed his palm over your lower belly, absentmindedly stroking his thumb in slow circles over the first home your child would have.
“I love you so much, angel.”
“I love you so much, Matty.”
Matt was here. Matt loved you. Matt was yours.

“Thought you said she was always on that thing,” Frank grumbles, tapping on a flat-screen monitor displaying the layout of a phone lockscreen. He stares intently at the red supernova background, scrunitising on the halo of stars ringed around the edges of the phone.
“She is,” Matt murmurs, furrowing his brows until they almost disappear beneath his glasses.
Frank sighs, leaning back in his chair, interlacing his hands behind his head. “It’s been four hours, Red. Why don’t ‘ya get some shut-eye, and I’ll stay up.” It wasn’t a question.
“Can’t be,” Matt breathes, mussing his hair. “It’s happening”–he pauses, fingers flitting over his watch–”tonight.”
Disconcertion settles over Frank’s face as he wonders if this really is the way he’s spending his Friday night. His mouth quirks to the side. “First I’m gonna ask you how you know that, and second I wanna know exactly what we’re doing.”
“I know her, Frank. I just… know.”
“The fuck kinda answer’s that?” Frank glares, incredulous. “What, so you can listen to people breathing five blocks away, anticipate a bullet’s exact trajectory and now you can predict the future?”
Matt loosens his tie, looking more offended at the implication of being a fortune teller than at any other of Frank’s digs tonight. ”Of course not! S’just that… all of a sudden, she’s back in my life again. I wanna know what she’s doing, why she’s here, and what she has planned. You don’t know her like I do, Frank. Elektra isn’t good news.”
Frank yawns. “So? Ask her.”
“It’s not that simple.”
“Hmm.”
A muscle feathers in Matt’s jaw, the tension more palpable than ever, especially with the time ticking idly by. He adjusts the earbuds connected to the laptop in front of him, straining for a single sound, or any hint of activity, but he picks up on nothing.
They’ve got all her communications tapped, thanks to Micro and his–as Foggy so aptly put it–technological wizardry, but this inactivity is well beyond her arrhythmic patterns. Matt glides his fingertips over her activity logs; every record of data painstakingly collated by Micro throughout the last two weeks. If there’s one thing about Elektra, it’s that Matt could count on her being out on a Friday night.
Matt’s aware of Frank’s narrowing eyes, in similar concentration on the monitor ahead. “You think she’s really gonna leave us hangin’?”
“No, no, it’s just– she’s smart, okay? She’s smart, but I don’t think she knows. She’d make it obvious otherwise.”
“I dunno Red,” Frank shrugs, “Baitin’ your ex like this? That’s ballsy. Even for you.”
Matt’s head whips to the side at the mention of that word, ears pricking at the sudden dilation of Frank’s pupils, and the acceleration of his heartbeat. He’s readying himself for a fight. “I’m not giving you the satisfaction of a response, Frank.”
Frank tsks. “Ah, but ‘ya just did.”
Click.
It’s the unmistakable noise of Elektra’s phone being unlocked.
2-1-1-0-8-7
Matt straightens up in his chair, pushing his earbuds further in. “Frank!” he hisses. “Screen!”
“Ain’t that your birthday? October 21?” Frank smirks.
Reddening, Matt pushes the grating thought aside. He’d discuss her passcode later, when time wasn’t of the essence. “Keep an eye on that screen–”
“She’s calling someone,” Frank interjects. He squints at the display. “Who’s… ‘Darling’?”
“Darling?” Matt stumbles over his words as the dial tone rings a little too loudly in his ears. “I-I don’t know.”
There’s a hint of amusement in Frank’s voice. “She ever call you that?”
But Matt’s response comes out quick. Too quick. “No!”
Frank’s mouth curves into a smile. “S’what I thought.”
Matt goes to retort, but the purpose of this mission embeds itself in his mind. “We have full access to her calls, her internet history, all her devices…If she’s planning anything, it’s gonna be tonight.”
“Can’t believe I’m sayin’ this, but I trust ‘ya,” Frank nods. “We got her.”
“Alright. I’m taking these out.” Unceremoniously, Matt yanks the earbuds out of his ears, wincing as the dial tone plays over the loudspeakers wired to the entire setup.
Frank cocks his ear towards the speaker in the corner, glancing at the call logs laid out on his lap. He counts softly to himself. “I’m seein’ this Darling a lot. At least twice a day.”
Before they can deliberate further, Elektra’s ambient voice fills the tiny space. “Hello, Darling.” She pauses, hinting a smile. “Ready for me?”
Frank arches an eyebrow. “The fuck?”
“What took you so long?”
Matt stands up so abruptly that his chair falls to the ground, dizzy with the clang of metal on concrete. “That’s–”
Out of all the people they’d unassumingly characterised as the mysterious Darling, they would never, not in a million years, expect to hear you.
“Did you look at the package I had delivered to you?” Elektra purrs, honeyed in a way that prickles the hairs on the back of Matt’s neck. “I would’ve sent it myself, but duty calls.”
“Shit, Red,” Frank chuckles. “You’re in deep shit.”
“It’s beautiful,” you say, “and it fits perfectly. You know me so well, Ellie.”
“Ellie?!” Matt mouths. “What?”
“I knew it’d fit, Darling. Now be a good girl and spread those legs for me.”
In complete disregard of Matt choking on his own spit, Frank’s eyes fly open. “This part of your mission?”
“N-no. Definitely not. But–” Matt hesitates, swallowing dryly. “We need to keep listening. For all we know, our friend here could be a contact.”
“Fuckin’ perv.”
Feeling his temper rise, Matt takes a deep breath, willing his urge to fight dissipate. “S’there a way to turn the volume down?”
“Beats me,” Frank replies, nonchalant. “But small world, huh? Our friend–”Frank emphasises–“and your ex. A girl you’re into and a girl you used to be into.”
“I’m not into her.”
Frank snorts. “Yeah, you are.”
“Hmm,” Matt says, nodding, “so explain why your heart beats faster around her.”
There’s more than a hint of annoyance in Frank’s reply. “What?”
“I know you heard me correctly, Castle. You can’t hide shit from me.”
“Shut the fuck up,” Frank growls, kicking his chair away, sending the call logs scattering to the floor.
“I’m so wet for you,” you gasp, unknowingly diffusing yet another fight, your breathy moans barely audible over the speakers.
Frank stiffens, his fists unfurling from his sides. “Wait, wait, wait. Did I just–”
The tips of Matt’s ears go pink.
“Mm,” Elektra muses. “I can still taste you, you know.”
“And how do I taste, Ellie?”
Elektra laughs, the sound crystalline. “Delicious.”
All of a sudden, it feels as if the labyrinthine, constricting nature of Micro’s lab seals off from the outside world, trapping both men and their paramours inside.
“Please,” you whimper, every stuttered breath punctuating the words that come to mind.
“Use your words, Darling. Please what?”
“Tell me how to touch myself.”
Frank shifts uncomfortably in his chair, wringing his hands as his eyes search for a distraction. “Feels like we’ve crossed a line, Red.”
“Since when have you ever cared about crossing lines?” Matt asks, scowling. “It’s pertinent. To…the mission.”
“Cut the shit. We’re not in Catholic school. You can just admit you’re horny.”
“Jesus, Frank! I’m not…”
“Of course,” Elektra hums, but the inflection in her voice indicates the kind of coyness that tells Matt she’s in complete control, physically present or not.
Strained nostalgia sends him into overdrive, even more so as he contemplates just how she knows you.
You, of all people, he knows, would be better off without someone like Elektra.
Yet here you are.
“Use one finger, Darling,” she continues, “and touch your clit for me. Up and down, just the way you like it.”
“Fuck,” you murmur, squirming as Elektra conducts your pleasure. “I want more.”
“Greedy, aren’t you? You’re lucky I feel generous tonight. Do you think you could handle two fingers?”
Matt exhales softly, licking his lips as he falters back to his seat. “Maybe you’re right.
“Yes,” you whisper. “Anything you ask for, Ellie. I can handle it.”
“Good girl. Let me hear how wet you are.”
Tipping his chin towards the ceiling, Matt reaches forward, fumbling for the cable connecting the speakers to their set up. “We’ll try again tomorr–”
“No,” Frank murmurs, holding his hand out reflexively.  He hesitates swatting Matt’s hand away from the wire, but he still follows through, however unconvincing the gesture seems to be. It’s true; his stance was different just moments ago, but he thinks about it carefully now. Maybe Matt’s right, and the outcome of the call will be more useful than not, but maybe, buried deep down amongst the feelings he harbours for you…
“Why?”
Saying nothing further, Frank turns his attention back to you, still conflicted about whether or not he should listen in.
Positioning the phone between your legs, you lean down to rub your clit, alternating between featherlight strokes and deep-pressure circles. As you begin to splinter with the thought of your impending orgasm, you dip two fingers into your pussy, hoping the mic picks up on the slickness pooling between your legs.
Slowly, you stretch yourself out, picturing her there, watching you. Savouring you. “God, Ellie, it feels so–”
“Mm,” Elektra moans, pausing to praise you as she ruffles around her nightstand. “Can you guess what I’m doing?”
You slide a pillow under your hips, groaning as you rock against your fingers. “I’m picturing you and your legs spread, your red silk robe draped over the side of the bed, and you’re– fuck! Fuck, Ellie–”
“Cum for me, pretty girl.”
Crying out, you arch your back into your own touch, riding your hand until your body recovers just enough to go again. “I know you’re… you’re grabbing your favourite dildo, so you can fuck yourself while you fuck me.”
“Hm, has anyone told you how clever you are?”
“You’re picturing it, aren’t you?” Matt asks, his face indiscernible. “The two of ‘em, together.”
Frank nods, pressing his lips together. “Yeah.”
“I guess we finally agree about something,” Matt says, chuckling.
“Yeah? And what’s that, exactly?”
“Do I really need to spell it out for you, Castle?”
Elektra huffs into the receiver, a faint buzzing emitting from her end of the call. “Put the phone down, Darling.”
“But–”
She continues, humoured and unfazed. “I can still hear you, don’t worry. I want you to use one finger on your clit, and hm… Three fingers in your pussy.” She poses her next words as a question. “Although, I know from the way you moaned my name that you added a third without asking?”
“Mm, Ellie–”
“I’ll let you off, just once.”
With every noise he picks up, Matt feels himself growing flustered. With all his tells laying out in the open–the flush in his cheeks, to his staggered breathing–he’s a dead giveaway. He pulls his tie over his head, unable to form a single coherent thought, the pretense of the mission long gone. Clearing his throat, Matt sits upright, draping his arm across his lap in an effort to conceal his growing erection. He opens his mouth to say something, anything, but one of Elektra’s moans punctuates his focus, catching him off guard.
Warmth singes Matt’s spine as he notices Frank’s gaze sliding to his lap.
“Shit, Red,” Frank murmurs, shaking his head, “I’m just… gonna leave you be. Okay? Call out when you’re… done.” He stands up promptly, stalking to the bedrolls in the other room.
“Wait–” Matt calls out, wanting to communicate that being left alone to act on his impulses is the last thing he needs…
But Frank makes a good point. Especially when he’s off to do the same thing.
“You know I can hear you jerking off, right?!” Matt yells.
Frank’s retort bounces off the walls. “Mind your own damn business, Red!”
“Whatever,” Matt mutters. Grateful for the privacy, he takes a moment to unbuckle his belt, tuning out the clinking of the metal in favour of the conversation overhead.
“Will you do me a favour, Ellie?” you gasp, pumping your fingers in and out of you with increasing speed.
“That depends on what you want.”
Desperation limns your voice, but you’re past the point of caring. “I want to hear you fuck yourself. Let me hear you cum.”
There’s a shuffle of fabric on the other end of the phone as Elektra makes a small noise of approval.
Matt doesn’t need to be told that she’s moved in favour of a better position.
Cowgirl was always her favourite.
He groans, still fully clothed, bucking into his hand as he concentrates on Elektra’s rhythmic breathing and hisses of pleasure. He palms himself, knowing she’s riding her dildo the same way she’d ride him, knowing just from the way she sounds that she’s getting close.
But she’s not the object of his attention tonight.
Not when you’re right there, unbelievably tangible yet barely within his grasp.
He wants you, affirming the thought as he pushes his underwear down; just enough to wrap his fist around his cock. He doesn’t have time to take it slow, so this will have to do.
In the other room, the noises you make echo in Frank’s mind, playing and replaying until he’s forced to hold onto the concrete wall to maintain any semblance of sanity. He squeezes his eyes shut as he fucks his hand, picturing you all stretched out, taking him until he has no more left to give.
As if they both hadn’t just spilled into their hands, unable to shake the relief that gave way into yearning, they remember that there is still the matter of the mission at hand.
“I… I think they’re finishing up,” Matt rasps, rolling his chair up to the laptop on the main desk.
Frank replies with a curt nod, taking his place on Matt’s left.
“Better?” Elektra exhales, satisfaction now evident in her tone.
“Always.”
“Same time tomorrow, Darling?” she asks, cheerful.
“Why don’t I come over to yours, Ellie? We can leave the curtains open again, give New York a little show.”
Elektra clicks her tongue. “Ah, like the one we put on tonight?”
Frank shoots a sideways glance at Matt.
She continues, more resolute than before. “I think an in-person show might be better. Don’t you think so, boys?”
“No goddamn way,” he mouths.
Elektra pouts. “You both came awfully fast, didn’t you?”
Frank was right; they’d listened far too long. To something far too personal.
Matt swears, searching for a way to end the call.
“You really think I wouldn’t find out? Amateurs.”
Frank sighs as the dial tone rings in their ears, clapping Matt on the back. “Well, I think our cover’s blown.”
“Yeah, no shit.”
“Nice knowin’ you, Red. Nice knowin’ you.”

“We’re here,” you said, facing him. His crimson lenses glinted against the porch light, his veiny hands tight around the walking cane. There was a smile on his face, the same face you’ve grown to love and adore, the dimples more prominent.  “Are you sure you could head home alone?”
“Yes,” he chuckles. “I can manage, you should go rest.”
“And—that’s it?” you said, teetering. He laughs, that breathy laugh he always makes, the one that also makes you laugh. His hand reaches for your face, calloused fingertips brush your cheek lacing through your hair. You close your eyes, appreciating his warm touch. His other hand wraps around your waist pulling you to him.
Your chests meet, feeling your heart beat faster and louder, like his alarm in the morning—alerting him. He presses his lips against yours, his stubble prickling a bit. He felt your warmth, your scent, your taste, it was inebriating. You pull back, catching your breath, he pulls you back in. He wants this moment to last, the moments where it was just you and him—happy.
Matt finally releases you, and a shot of anxiety crashes through him. This won’t last, he thinks. After two weeks of flirting back and forth, he was happy for a time, but he knew the risks. Just a few days ago you found him lumped on the floor unconscious, his eyes sunken in, purple bags around his eyes. He knew how worried you were, the way your breathing would quicken, your heartbeat too fast, and your hands cold and shaking. He hated how it made you feel, that’s why he thought of ending it as soon as possible. Maybe Foggy was right, this lifestyle isn’t suited for a mundane relationship.
“Goodbye,” he smiled, the guilt eating him up. He turned to walk away, hailing a cab across the street. You head back to your apartment, you notice the way Matt’s mood shifted. It has been bothering you for days. He would always say he fell down the stairs or he slipped, but you’re not dumb, you know how different those bruises are. It worries you too much.
You fumbled to open the door, the keys got caught on some pins. You dragged yourself to the fridge for a drink, you took the box of juice and a glass, pouring yourself a drink. The cold liquid shook your body off of the anxiety, it was soothing in a way.
“Hello there,” a voice said. Your body jumped, the glass falling from your hand as you turned around. There was a woman in your dining room. She was slim and sharp, she could’ve been a model you thought, with long black hair cascading down her shoulders. She wore a maroon suit, wraps of the red cloth around her waist and hands. Then you saw it, a faint glimmer of silver at her hip, two blades sheathed, fear raised from your chest.
“Who the hell are you?” you shouted, brows furrowed. You could feel the wetness on your feet, under the shards of glass. She stood up from her seat, walking to you in a cat-like manner, slow and precise.
“I’m no one, especially to you,” she said, her voice low and sultry. Her eyes were dark, like a siren, her red lips sharp as she grinned.
“So—why are you in my apartment then?” you said, sarcastically.
“Just to look,” she said, scanning you with her dark gaze, her long lashes batting at you.
“Okay lady you’re creeping me out,” you said, sweat forming on your forehead. “I need you to leave.”
You inch forward but she quickly grabs the phone on your kitchen counter. She takes a look at your screen, the photo of Matt at Fogwell’s set as your background. “Aww, how cute,” she said. You grabbed the phone from her hand, hiding it away. She had this mischievous look on her face, taunting you. “You must be Matthew’s new boy toy.”
“Boy toy?” you were shocked. “You know Matt? And what’s with this ninja outfit?”
“Ninja?” she chuckled. “Which part of this get-up says ninja?” You gestured at the blades on her hip. “Ah, smart boy. Matthew’s taste must have improved.”
“Lady, you’re not answering my questions.”
“Because they’re dumb questions,” she said. She inched forward, her long fingers touching your chin. She was beautiful up close, almost otherworldly. Her arm reaches past your shoulder to the fridge to grab the box of juice. She grabs a glass and pours herself a drink as you stand frozen. Your head is riddled with so many questions.
“Fine—I’m Elektra Natchios,” she said, taking a sip of the juice. “And I’m here to save your life.”
Matt asked for the cab to stop only a few meters from your apartment. The cab driver was confused, Matt gave the man some money before he left. His senses were off, something was wrong. He could smell it from afar, his head scanned across the street, the smell of the dead. Like rotting corpses. He could also hear metal sliding across each other, like a hundred blades unsheathing.
He tried to pinpoint where they were coming from and then it hit him, it was coming from your building. He rushed through the people on your street, bumping into shoulders, curses flying around as he hit their bodies a little too strong. Fear inched at his nape, sweat trickling down his skin.
He reaches the entrance of the building, the door ajar. He ran to the stairs, running to your unit, he was getting tired but soon the adrenaline came over him. He reached the fourth floor, his senses were off, and he couldn’t find your scent. He runs to the last door on the right, a body lumped on the floor the taste of iron on Matt’s lips.
He tried, he tried to find it—any semblance of your presence but there was none. He could smell the faintest jasmine scent, a familiar scent to Matt, a scent he knew would only signal bad news.
“Where is he?” he said, entering the room.
The slender figure, wiping the blood off her face, left a last kick on another man on the floor. The entire room was a mess, tables were broken, vases toppled over, and around twelve men were dead on your apartment floor. “Oh there you are,” she said, taking a glass of juice from the counter. “I haven’t seen you for months and you don’t even say hi.”
“Answer my question Elektra,” he said.
“He’s safe with me,” dropping the glass on the floor, a thousand shattered pieces littering the already messy room. “He’s on the way to my penthouse with my driver.”
“Who did this?”
“Your little devil adventures pissed off the wrong men,” she said. She reached down to the body on her feet, pulling on the man’s hair. “Tell him who sent you,” her blade placed on his jugular.
“The Rose sends his regards,” the man grunts, blood pooling on his mouth before he passes.
“Richard Fisk?” Matt said.
“Putting the Kingpin behind bars left the city ripe for the taking,” Elektra said. “Stay with me for a while, we can think of how we can deal with this there—plus he’s there too.”
She noticed the way his hand clenched, knuckling white as his nails dug into his palms. She touches his hand, rubbing her thumb to soothe him. “Elektra—I can’t lose him,” his voice hitches, tears forming.
“And you won’t,” she whispered. “I swear, I’ll help you.”
“How would I know you’re not deceiving me again,” he said, pulling his hand away from her. “There’s always a price when you’re involved.”
“Richard Fisk is ruining business for me. Help me get rid of him and you’ll never see me again,” her lips graze Matt’s ear. “Plus—you and me fighting criminals, like old times,” she smirked.
Matt bit his lips in contempt.
Elektra’s penthouse was big, with high ceilings and massive windows painted gray. It was cold and dark, You sat near the kitchen counter, your hands shaking. The sight from your apartment was frightening. Elektra took down a bunch of armed men, her body moving swiftly with such grace she was like a red sword cutting through the men like nothing.
She managed to drag you outside the apartment, shoving you inside a black SUV, and told the driver to bring you to her penthouse. You were in so much shock during the car ride. Your home would probably be a crime scene, all your belongings left there for the cops to find, you even left your phone there, with all your precious pictures of Matt.
The door swung open. You looked to see Elektra enter the room, her clothes soaked in blood. Behind her was Matt, his suit all messy and his hair all tousled. You ran to him, wrapping your arms around his waist. His hands gripped onto you hard. “God, I’m glad you’re safe,” he whispered.
“What happened?” you asked, Elektra vanished from the scene, her clothes left on the floor trailing to her room.
“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you the truth,” he said, his hands firm on your waist. You saw the duffel bag Matt had left on the doorstep, a billy club protruding from the opening.
“Are you?” you uttered. “The Devil of Hell’s Kitchen?”
He nods, it would explain everything, the bruises, the wounds, the constant pain weighing on his shoulders as if he carried the world. “How?” you said, your brows furrowed as your hands roamed his chest.
“It’s a lot to explain, but trust me I’ll tell you everything,” he said. “No more secrets.”
Your hands went to his collar, pulling him into a kiss. His lips, were warm against yours as his arms hugged your waist. His kiss was filled with want, pulling you tighter to take you in. It was feverish like he craved for your taste on his lips. He breathed in, taking in your warm scent into his lungs, the fear from earlier leaving his senses.
His fingers reached under the hem of your shirt, calloused fingertips warm against your back. Your hands smoothed through his soft hair, his lips falling to your cheek, down to your jaw, to your neck, the roughness of his chin pricking your neck. His lips pressed onto your skin, the tip of his tongue toying with your jugular. He would leave a few marks on your neck, drawing moans out of you, It was lewd, you had forgotten you weren’t in your homes.
You heard the clinking of glasses, Elektra was setting up three glasses and an expensive bottle of scotch. “You horny boys ready for a drink or what?” she sneered. Matt sighed, letting go of you.
The three of you shared a drink, the bitterness surely shook the anxiety away. “Care to discuss how you two know each other?” you asked. Matt choked on his drink, and Elektra smirked.
“Yes Matthew, do tell your boyfriend here how we met.”
“Elektra was my ex in college,” Matt said, his voice hoarse.
“Ah,” you said, taking another sip of the liquor. You avoided their gazes, swirling your glass around doing anything to distract yourself from imagining Matt on top of Elektra or Elektra on top of Matt or—
“If it’s any consolation for you,” she said. “I broke it off. Not that Matthew wasn’t an excellent lover, he surely is well endowed.”
You choked on your drink. Matt shook his head in disbelief.
“Especially in the bedroom,” she said. “His skill is unparalleled.”
“Can we stop this conversation,” Matt broke off, waving his hand around.
“So, how long are we staying here?” you asked.
“As long as Fisk’s son is brought to justice,” he said. “We’ll take care of it.”
You downed the drink, the alcohol burning your throat. You noticed Elektra staring at you, her dark eyes piercing through you like she could tell all your secrets just from reading your body language. You look back at her, your brows furrowed in confusion. She smiles, that same devious smile she makes, like a temptress.
“Does it bother you?” she asked. Matt had left to get your things settled for the night.
“No,” you answered, bile rising from your stomach. Was it jealousy? Or utter curiosity? That Matt would settle for you after dating someone who looked like a Greek goddess.  “Do you have a problem with me? From the moment you saw me you’ve been taunting me.”
Her smile fades.
“If anything I think the jealous one here is you.”
She chuckles under her breath. “I’m not jealous,” she smiled, inching closer to you. “Matt had spoken to me about you, how much he adores you. And somehow it intrigued me.”
“Intrigued you?”
“How it’ll be like to have you,” she said. “To see what Matthew sees in you.”
She sets her index finger on your chin bringing your face to her. You could smell her lip gloss, a soft cherry scent. You inched closer as well, your breaths meeting. Heat rose to your cheeks painting them red. Her slender hands found your waist, hooking onto a belt loop and pulling you in.
“What’s going on?” you heard Matt clear his throat. Elektra knew he heard everything, and her stable heart would indicate she was telling the truth.
She spun you so you were facing Matt, his shirt abandoned leaving him in his trousers. “Just wanted to play. Your boyfriend here seemed eager.”
“Is that true?” he said, his voice stern and commanding. “Do you want to play with Elektra?”
“Only if you allow it,” you said. Matt’s eyebrow raised as if you just said the wrong thing. “I meant, only if you allow it, sir.”
“Oh, has he been trained well?” Elektra said, her hands finding your hair, tugging.
“Yeah, always obedient,” he came close to you and Elektra. “You know your safe words right?”
“Yes sir.”
“Good,” he said, taking his head to your lips. A soft whimper leaves your mouth, you can hear Elektra chuckle. Matt’s large hands find your waist, reaching behind to grasp a handful of your ass.
You could feel Elektra leave soft kisses on your neck, her hands roaming all over your torso. Your knees buckle from all their touching, your knees almost giving out. She finds the growing erection in your center, her hands palming it. You cry in Matt’s kiss, falling out of balance.
Elektra grabs the two of you by the wrists, dragging you to her room. It was massive, with big windows overlooking the city skyline, a king-sized bed with maroon sheets, and some gym equipment at the side.
Matt sits on the bed, palming his erection. He pulls you to his lap, sucking on your neck leaving marks. Elektra comes to join you, standing in between your legs to press a kiss on your lips. She was sweet and her lips soft.
“Show Elektra how good you are sweetheart,” Matt whispered.
You knelt in front of Matt taking his cock out. You left soft kisses along his erected shaft, licking the from the base to the leaking tip. Elektra went to sit on the small chair near her vanity. Her hands playing with her sex.
Your lips pressed on the tip of Matt’s cock, and he shuddered from the contact. You slowly envelop the head with your wet lips, taking him till your nose hit the base of his cock. Matt lets out a guttural moan, his hand gripping your hair.
Elektra played with her clit, circling her fingers on the sensitive nub. You could hear her moan just from watching you, you start to touch your sex, anything to deal with your aching cock.
“See? He’s a good slut,” Matt said. You continued to bob your head on his cock going down and sucking up.
“Let’s see if he can do the same here,” Elektra said. You crawled your way to her, her panties already gone, her sex glistening against the dim lights. You present your tongue to her as you lap on her slit, licking and sucking on her clit while you tease her entrance. She shudders, pulling you in through your hair, her thighs shaking on each side of your face.
You could feel Matt pull your pants and underwear off, his stubbled face in between your cheeks soon after. You continue to taste her at the same pace Matt was licking your hole, gripping tightly on your ass as he ate you out.
“Shit—” Elektra moans, her long nails scratching your scalp.
“Is that good mistress?” you said, looking up at her with tears running down your face, your lips swollen and wet.
“Very good,” she whimpers once more.
After Elektra came for the first time you were soon on her bed. Matt lying down, you straddling his dick, while Elektra rode Matt’s face. You and Elektra were moaning from Matt’s actions, his thick cock filling you well while his tongue played with her clit.
Your hands held onto Matt’s chest for stability, Elektra pulling you in for a kiss, her mouth swollen and drooling as she pressed onto you. She moved her hips forward and back on Matt’s face as she soon came for a second time, an ethereal glow plastered on her face.
Matt later placed you on the bed, your legs on each side of his waist as he fucked you more vigorously. Elektra lay next to you stroking your cock as Matt riled his hips inside you, his hair all wet and his lips swollen. Precum leaked onto your belly, Elektra took some of it to taste and to use as lube for herself. She later took your cock inside her, straddling you as Matt took his fill inside you.
Matt’s arms wrapped around Elektra’s waist, fondling her breasts and tweaking her nipples while another hand played with her clit. Sharing a kiss, they looked like a pornographic painting, Matt was big and full of muscle while Elektra was small and delicate. Elektra’s pussy felt so good on your cock, and Matt’s thickness only drove you closer to unraveling.
“You look so pretty taking us sweetheart,” Matt groans, Elektra agreeing with him. They bent over to share a kiss with you, their tongues meeting yours as you moaned.
“I’m close—” you said, Elektra smirked. She rolled her hips harder, clenching on your cock as she rode her high. Her body convulsed on your dick she was shaking so hard it sent vibrations on your cock triggering your climax.
You came inside her and the vibrations from your bodies only aided in Matt’s release. The three of you were moaning messes as you came crashing down on the bed, naked bodies all wet and panting.
Matt smoothed your hair out before kissing you on the lips, Elektra doing the same.
You spent the month living with Elektra, the sex continued until the mission was done. The three of you spent the nights researching and fucking all over her loft, like animals.  Sooner or later Matt found out Elektra had an ulterior motive which led her to leave again. Your relationship with Matt never changed but you still thought of those nights whenever you lay with Matt.
interactions are greatly appreciated btw if u liked this fic and want more send me a prompt and i'd gladly make something from it :>

okay but have we considered meeting ares in a boxing gym while being a mortal and having him watching you absolutely DESTROY some other guy?
we have not considered that but considering that has made me consider ares coaching you, helping you get more power behind your punches, helping you mirror his technique. and he's a good coach, an excellent coach, actually. he fuels your ego just enough, and it is inevitably his fault that you one day boast about being so good, you could probably take him down at that point.
and he just laughs right in your face, brushing you off, not even stopping to feed into your "delusions" as he calls them. but when you eventually do goad him into feeding into your tactics, you end up on the ground, limbs uselessly pinned to the ring, left completely to his mercy.

You’re in Josie’s when they realize. It’s like any other night, Foggy to your left, Karen to your right, as you watch Matt and Elektra play pool together. You take another swig of your whiskey, and tap your fingers on the glass, desperately attempting to try and listen to what Karen and Foggy were laughing about.
Two more weeks. That’s all you have to do.
In two weeks, Matt and Elektra will be married, and that’ll be that. They’ll live forever in their New York penthouse, fighting criminals and having beautiful children. That is their fate, and you’ll give your best man speech at their wedding.
All will be well, and you can bury your feelings deep down under alcohol and other women. No one will ever know what you really think of the happy couple.
You’re happy when Matt beats her at pool and they head back over to your table, where they absolutely hang over each other.
“We’re gonna head out.” Elektra says, a slightly drunken smile on her face. Matt hums and presses a kiss to her cheek.
“Meeting with the florist tomorrow.” Matt tells you all.
“I’m going to grab another drink,” You announce, and look at them. “One for the road?” Matt smiles at you, and for a moment, you think he must know.
“I’ll come grab one with you.” He turns to Elektra to ask if she wants one, but she shakes her head.
“I have to finish this one.”
So, you and Matt head over to the bar, his hand on your arm. You wonder if he knows.
“You seem distracted,” he tells you, and you figure you’re caught.
“Just working on my best man speech. It’s all up here.” You tap your forehead. You order two shots for the pair of you and take them quickly with your best friend. “Getting excited?”
“Yeah, it’s just kind of crazy. I’m nervous, is all.. And she seems to be totally fine with the whole thing.”
You bite back a bitter comment about both of their commitment issues.
“I think she’s just as nervous as you are.”
“I can hear heartbeats. Trust me, she’s not.”
“But you’re in love with her, right?”
If you weren’t so drunk, maybe you would catch his moment of hesitation.
“Yeah.”
“Then what more do you need?”
“You’d marry someone just because you’re in love with her? That’s all you need?”
Not just someone. You know who you’d marry.
“That’s all I need, Matty. You think too much. Have another shot.” He laughs at this and pats your shoulder.
“I think you’ve had enough.”
“Says you, I’m a bachelor, still.”
“So am I—For the next two weeks.”
“And yet,” a voice says behind you, “You’re still accounted for.” Elektra says, approaching the pair of you at the bar.
You both turn to her. You’re drunk enough so you don’t tense.
She hands Matt his jacket, and they link arms. Jealousy fills your mouth, and it tastes like venom.
“Elektra.” You smile and nod to her.
She says your name before adding, “Have a goodnight.”
“Goodnight.. Get home safe, Matt.” You say, smiling at them as they leave.
You turn back to the bar, where your smile falters. You take a seat, resting your head in your hands. You’re not drunk. That’s not what this is. When you look up, Josie is there and hands you another whiskey on ice and sends you this knowing wink.
Your face burns, and you nurse your drink. What did she know about your life? You only spent every Friday and sometimes Saturdays here. You sit there in your pity for a while, thinking about it all. You’ll plan a vacation for when they get home from their honeymoon. You’ll fuck someone you’ll never see again and by the time you get back home, you’ll be over it.
You’ll be the godfather to their first child; Matt will be the best man at your own wedding. You’ll live the rest of your life with this deep dark secret that no one, not even your best friend, will ever know.
Except, you forget that Karen and Foggy are in the bar too. They slide into the seats next to you and just look at you for a while.
“I might be tipsy, and I might not have super senses, but I can tell you’re looking at me. What is it?” You finally pick your head up and look at them.
“I figured it out.” Karen says.
You’re too drunk for this.
“Figured what out, Miss Page?” You ask.
“Me too,” Foggy adds. “And to think, you almost had us.”
“What?”
“The bachelor life. The one-night stands. The constant rotating door of girlfriends because you can’t have the one you actually want.” She continues.
You feel sick. How did they know?
“I have no idea what you’re talking about.” You say, as neutrally as possible but it comes out defensive.
Then Foggy says it.
“You’re in love with Elektra.”
And you stop. They think they have you. Then, you start laughing. Like a crazy person, like it’s the funniest thing you’ve ever heard. God, it’s so dumb. You’re just that good at hiding it.
“Nice try, guys.”
“We saw the way you were looking at her while they were playing pool! That’s why you’ve been acting so weird since they got engaged.” Foggy reasons. You know what it looks like.
You took another sip.
“That’s because I’m not in love with her,” Elektra is intelligent, beautiful, and funny. Anyone would be lucky to have her, you’re sure. But you hate that she’s happy for another reason. “It’s because I’m in love with Matt.”
• • •
You’re nineteen years old. You work at a pizza place between semesters, with Matt often coming to visit you. You’re best friends, and he likes to come in, grab a slice and a diet coke, have you take your break with him, and then leave.
One day, he’s late to do this routine and an older coworker says to you, “Where’s your boyfriend?”
Your face burns.
“He’s not my boyfriend, asshole! I’m not gay, I wouldn’t ever dream of it!” You had said, a story you’ve told others and yourself so many times that it doesn’t feel like a lie anymore.
Matt walks in a few minutes later.
The truth is, if you’re honest with yourself, you’ve had feelings for Matt for a long time. Ever since you met him at church one Sunday, you’ve felt this need to be closer to him, to be with him all the time.
You knew what it was then, just like you know now. And just like now, you hated yourself for it.
But it got worse over the years, in a way that you just couldn’t push down like you had done for so many other people.
You became a nurse and when Matt became Daredevil, he used this fact to his advantage. And for a long time before this, you were able to keep how you felt about him at bay. You were able to just be his best friend, and nothing more.
But he crawled into your window one night, drunk on pain and whimpered as he asked you to stitch him up. By the time you were done, he laid there half naked on your couch, and your hands were covered in his blood.
You felt guilty for wanting him while he lay there, wounded. But in another way, you felt baptized, relieved that you were allowing yourself to accept a truth that you had denied for so many years.
And it got worse from there.
After admitting to yourself that you had feelings for him, it became prevalent that there was no going back.
You stopped by the office for lunch this one time and you walked into his office to see him lounging casually at his desk, tie half undone, sleeves rolled up, and hair slightly disheveled. You scolded yourself for being so into him.
And then he got back together with Elektra.
For a while, you figured this was a good thing. A great thing, even. Matt would date Elektra and you could move on, maybe admit to yourself that you liked guys and start dating more of them.
And it worked, for a little bit. It was easier to not love him when he was around Elektra because of how obviously happy he was with her.
Then they got engaged.
You were so angry at yourself for letting it happen, so angry at yourself for not saying anything, angry at him for not noticing, angry at him for not wanting you.
So, you started to date other girls.
And this is how you lived for so long, dating women you didn’t like in favor of burying the immense love you felt for your best friend. Until last week, when you broke up with your girlfriend because you just couldn’t take it anymore.
There would be no telling Matt, sure, but there would be no telling anyone how in love with him you were, there would just be you, coming out and dating men that eased the longing for him.
Until that night at the bar, when Foggy and Karen catch you in this vulnerable state.
They walk you home from the bar that night, as you slip into a drunker and drunker mind. You won’t remember anything after that confession in the morning.
Karen hands you your pajamas and a glass of water. She helps you into bed and holds you as you cry.
“Will he ever know how much I love him?” You ask, drunk and in a different pain Matt was in that night you stitched him up.
Karen shushes you gently and tells you she’ll call you in the morning.
You don’t remember saying that in the morning. All you know is that you’ve made an immeasurably stupid mistake by telling them.
• • •
On Monday, you have off because you worked a 12-hour shift the night before.
Foggy sends you a text asking you to bring them dinner while they work on some cases.
You oblige, ready to push down your feelings until the next time you’re drunk.
But when you get there, you don’t see Matt. You assume he’s in another room, grabbing coffee. You hold up their dinner.
“Hey guys, I brought Chinese.” You tell them, sitting at the table after handing them the bag. You lean back in your seat, keeping your cool.
“Why didn’t you tell us you’re in love with Matt?”
You snap back up.
“I’m sorry, can you be a little more discrete, considering the man has super hearing?!”
Karen rolls her eyes.
“He’s not here. He left a little while ago to go pick up his tux.”
Your jaw clenches, jealousy sewing the hinges shut.
“I didn’t even realize you were into guys.”  Foggy says.
“That was intentional. I never really.. developed feelings for any other guys. Matt is just..” You look down at the chopsticks you’ve been twirling in your fingers. “I just see him and there’s nothing I want more than to just have him, nothing more than to just beg him to want me.”
Karen and Foggy both know the feeling.
Because it’s no secret that Matt is this alluring force of nature especially when it comes to his charisma and determination. Everyone either wants him or wants to be him, and its why Elektra is so perfect for him. They’re similar people.
And who are you? Some nurse who can’t even admit when he’s got it bad for his friend.
“You should tell him before the wedding.”
You scoff at the idea.
“And ruin our friendship? Ruin his wedding day? I’d rather see him happy and oblivious than lose him completely.”
But Karen and Foggy know you well and can see how this is starting to wear on you. You’re losing yourself grieving something that could never have been.
“You owe it to him and to yourself.”
“I don’t. I know you guys’ care, and I appreciate it. But there isn’t anything to do. Matt and Elektra are going to get married because they love each other and that’ll be that.” You tell them. “Matt won’t ever know how I feel, and I’ve made peace with that. He wouldn’t want me and I don’t want to ruin what we have.”
“But how do you know—” Karen starts, but you cut her off.
“Matt’s never expressed any interest in men, and to my knowledge he’s never been with any.”
Then, Foggy says something that haunts you.
“That’s what we thought about you before Friday.”
And it rattles within you, all throughout your body and your brain.
It stays with you throughout the night, and into the next day.
You can’t get it out of your head.
Maybe you could tell him. Just tell him and add on if he doesn’t feel the same, to forget you ever said anything.
And for the first time in a long time, you let yourself hope.
You lay in bed that night and fall asleep thinking about it. About if he’ll say yes, if he’ll kiss you like you wanted him to.
You spend days with this thought, with it rattling around. One day you wake up and are greeted by your calendar and see that the wedding is the next day.
You’re sick with nausea at the thought and realize how horrible of an idea it would be to tell him.
You pretty much spend all day, sick, staring at your suit and thinking about how horrible it would be to watch Matt get married to someone who isn’t you. In the church where you met. Not even knowing how much you want him.
You contemplate your options.
You could go to Elektra, beg her to call off the wedding and let you have him.
You could fake being sick, leave the country and block his number.
You could tell Matt the truth.
You opt to call Karen.
“I don’t know what to do.” You say, this vulnerability in your voice that you wouldn’t show normally.
“Oh..” She says your name softly. “Do you love him?” She asks.
“Karen..”
“Do you?”
“Yeah. You know I do.”
“Then tell him that.”
“What if he wants nothing to do with that?”
“Then at least you know.”
And then you ask her the real question that terrifies you.
“What if he does?”
“What?”
“What if he wants me like I want him? What do I do then?”
She wants to ask you, who cares? If Matt wants you just as desperately as you want him, what matters after that? But she felt this way towards Matt Murdock once, so she knows how horrible it is. And she’s fallen in love with women she can’t have before, so she understands.
“Then let yourself be happy.” Is her answer.
• • •
The day of the wedding comes.
You think you might be more nervous than either of them.
You sit with Foggy and Matt in the basement of the church, sipping a whiskey. Matt has his scotch, and Foggy has his rum. The lot of you have rather distinguished tastes.
Matt looks so fucking good. Your heart races. Foggy sees your nervous look and finishes his drink, clearing his throat.
“I’m gonna go check in with Marci and see how everything’s going so far. We have to be up there in ten.” He reminds you. He turns and leaves.
You’re with Matt, alone in your feelings. He’s fixing his cuffs and tilts his head towards you.
“Why is your heart racing?” He grins. “I’m the one getting married.” You say nothing. You take another sip of your drink.
“You’re reading it all wrong.” You tell him. And that isn’t a lie. You’re on the verge of saying it.
“Whatever,” He chuckles. “Help me with my bowtie, please?” He hands you the untied bowtie and you take it. You take it and step towards him.
Your hands are shaking as you wrap the bowtie around his neck and tie it, with this gentleness reserved for only those who truly know you. You can feel his breath against your skin. It’s enough to make you lose your mind. Your fingers fumble with his bowtie, and when you’re done, you straighten it out a bit. He looks really good. He’s yet to close his suit jacket and put on his glasses, but he will soon.
“Matt..” You say softly. “You know I feel about you, right?”
He pauses.
“You’re my best friend.” He hums. “Of course, I do.”
Your hands rest on his shoulders. Your fingers twitch.
“No, It’s more than that.” You tell him. “I love yo—” You’re unable to finish your confession.
Because Matt is kissing you, his hands on your sides, and pushing you against the church basement wall. You melt into the kiss, your hands going up to cup his chin. You feel this swell inside of you, like your prayers have been answered.
Kissing this man you love; you’ve never felt closer to God.
He deepens the kiss, slipping his tongue between your lips and pressing his body against yours, ruining your perfectly unwrinkled suit.
He kisses you for a few moments more.
Then, he pulls away, but you bring him back for another one by his collar, and he happily obliges. Your hand goes up to the nape of his neck, playing with the ends of his hair. Then, he pulls away again.
“That was…”
He stands breathless before you.
“I know.” He finishes.
“What happens now?”
He has this confused look on his face.
“What do you mean?”
“I mean, what do we do next?” To you, it’s so obvious. He should go find Elektra, call everything off, figure out what it would look like to be in a relationship with you. He should say I love you back.
“I’m going to go upstairs and get married.” He says, like it should be the obvious answer.
“What? But you just—”
“I know what I did, but… I can’t…”
“You can’t? You just did.” You defend.
He grabs his glasses where he set them on the coffee table earlier.
“I’m sorry, but we just.. We can’t.”
“No! Not we, there is no we, right now, You can’t! I have been waiting for that for years and you kiss me like that, and you decide you can’t?” You spit out.
He nods.
“You’re right.” For a moment, you live in a world where you’ve convinced him. “There is no we.” He says and turns to the door to leave. You follow him, and before he can open the door, you’re grabbing him, turning him around. Your lips are against his as if to beg him to change his mind. He lets you think you’ve convinced him.
When he pulls away from the kiss, you whisper it out.
“I love you.” You say. “Please, don’t…”
He wants you to ask him not to get married. You won’t. He’d say no anyways.
He steps away from you, buttons up his suit jacket, fixes his bowtie and puts on his glasses.
“Come on, we have to go.” He tells you. He turns and steps out, grabbing his cane on the way.
He leaves you longing for more.
He might not ever give it to you, you realize.
The ceremony is beautiful, and these two will be happy together. It kills you. You watch your best friend get married after kissing him, and something in you is breaking all the while. You were wrong.  You should have told him earlier, you should have gotten over your fears, you should have kissed him so long ago.
You book a flight to the Bahamas for two weeks and take off work or as much time as you can. You just can’t watch the happy newlyweds. It’ll break you even more than it already is.
But at least you and Matt are still friends, right? That’s what this was all about? Keeping him in your life, even if it meant not having him in the way you wanted? You’re willing to give up your happiness if it means he’ll stay in your life.
You’re frustrated, too, especially because the kiss did nothing to deter your attraction, it just makes you want him in such a way that makes you sick.
You’re in love with Matt Murdock and he knows it.
It’s a shame his wife doesn’t.

You don't like her.
In fact, you hate her.
You know hate is a strong word; one reserved for the most vile of people, the ones who hurt and maim and destroy innocent, unsuspecting lives. Ones who take take take, without giving anything in return.
But honestly, hate is exactly what you feel for her, and it takes years for the feeling to go away.
It takes years for the curse she leaves behind to slowly begin healing. She is a glacier; cold and stubborn and incapable of sustaining life in the cracks and crevices between sheets of ice. Years go by before things unfreeze, though the process is slow even then.
It's not the fact that she makes Matt happy, or the fact that Matt is so clearly in love with her, as much as it pains you to admit, loathing the way it's her and not you tucked into his side and under his arm. It's the fact that she hones in on every one of his vulnerabilities, every one of his insecurities, and exploits them. You struggle watching the two of them together, aching with the thought that Matt deserves love and happiness and good things.
Because Elektra, despite her designer clothes and polished accent and sharp, all-knowing smile, isn't a good thing.
You don't hate her in the beginning. You certainly aren't a fan, but given that you've never seen Matt smile so much, you force yourself to at least give her a half-hearted chance. You give her several chances, if you're being honest. Several chances to prove she's not as awful as she seems to be at first sight, several chances to prove how much she loves him, several chances to be a positive thing in his life.
But she's doesn't take those chances, doesn't even acknowledge them, and you hate her for it.
You find yourself wishing, praying for her to be better than she is. You need her to be better than she is. At least then Matt would be with someone who almost deserves him, someone who is almost as good as him. Loving this man from afar rips your heart to shreds, nothing but blood and scraps of muscle held loosely in your hand, but at least you would be able to rest easier if you knew that someone was taking care of and loving him the way that he needs.
Instead, you are left with the knowledge that she is not worthy of him, and you hate her for taking this man's heart, knowing he could have the world if he asked for it. You don't know Elektra well, but you've observed her enough that you know she would never be willing to give it to him.
But you would.
You’d give him every damn corner of the universe, every strategically arranged atom that could make up anything he could ever want, and you’d kneel at his feet while placing it into his gentle hands.
She is selfish, and she yanks him along for this ride of hers, uncaring of any sort of trouble she could lead him into as she amuses herself. He follows her so willingly, to your ever-present misery, ready to do her bidding for whatever she needs. He hardly lets her lift a finger, carrying all the weight of the relationship on his shoulders, even while he refuses to acknowledge how she so clearly dances ahead of him, as if she’s already aware that she’s going to leave him behind.
You watch in confusion as Matt changes almost immediately, almost overnight, and he doesn't change for the better. The man sitting next to you in class is someone you don’t recognize, someone who is distant and so wrapped up in this woman that he becomes unaware of everyone else who considers him one of their own. He’s a far cry from the man who holds your hand through panic attacks or shares his french fries with you after you swear you aren’t hungry.
Matt has always been effortlessly charming, wide smile beautiful and enticing, dark eyes lit up in humor when you make a stipid comment or when you trip over your own two feet. But now he has shifted into something aloof and disinterested, and the flicker of annoyance that crosses over his face when you ask if he wants to grab coffee between classes absolutely cuts you to the bone.
The people in his life are so suddenly forced to go on without him, absolutely reeling with the realization that Matt could just drop them so easily, so unconcernedly.
(“Don’t push us out. That’s not fair.”
“But she loves me.”
“We love you, too, Matt.”
“It’s not the same.”)
It…kills you. It’s like you’re a used toy placed in a box and shoved away, something meant to provide vague memories years down the line.
You've been in relationships before, so you understand the giddiness of new love. You understand how exciting and how breathtaking and how wonderful it is to find someone who might fit into your life so perfectly. You understand how focus shifts to this new person as you devote yourself to learning as much about them as possible, focusing in awe and wonder as you soak up every single cell that makes up this person you’ve fallen in love with.
But this isn't that.
Years of friendship has given you insight to the inner workings of one Matthew Murdock, so you can see that he is completely, all caution to the wind, in love with her. And you can grudgingly admit that you see slivers of affection on Elektra's face when she looks at him. But it's more than that.
It's obsession.
Matt spends all of his time with her now, every spare moment, and she acts if she is the sole gate-keeper of his time. She is vicious, territorial, and uneasy to work with, demanding that every little second he has to be spent in her presence. He starts missing classes, starts skipping your weekly study dates, stops showing up at his part-time job at the disabilities resource center.
If it was just those things that had changed, you'd probably just call him out on his shit, knowing how much school has always meant to him and not wanting to see him quit. But ultimately you know it's his choice, and if he wants to ruin his grades and chances of success, that's on him.
And if it was just his friendship with you that was affected, you might have let it go. He’s still your friend, even if it doesn’t feel like right now, and you’re acutely aware of the fact that you'd forgive this man for anything and everything. It might break your heart in the process, but you know that you'll spend the rest of your life trying to make him happy, even if it's from the sidelines as he loves and promises himself to someone else.
You somehow manage to scramble your broken pieces into your clumsy hands from where they currently sit at his doorstep, desparate to get to a place where your hatred for this woman does not batter against all the corners in your mind. And even as you mourn for the man that had once been so kind and soft with you, your heart breaks further, sadly aware that he's hurting Foggy, too, and that it's not something you can easily push aside.
Foggy is the kindest person you've ever met. Made of glee and dad jokes and sunshine in a bottle, and he definitely doesn't deserve the way he's being treated. Your fingers twitch at your sides, wanting nothing more than to hit him with one of his heavy textbooks and tell him to snap out of it, and you're absolutely positive that Foggy would be second in line.
You hate Elektra. Not because Matt loves her, but because she's pushed aside everyone else Matt loves...and he's let her.
When she abruptly leaves, cutting herself so completely out of Matt's life with rusty shears meant to hurt and maim and destroy, it's you and Foggy who help put him back together. Even with as much pain as he's caused, as many tears you’ve shed, you fight tooth and nail for him in his depression, even while he fails to fight for himself.
(“She left me.”
“We’re still here, Matt.”
“It’s not the same.”)
It's years before you learn how Elektra had managed to get her claws into him so deeply, cutting down to the bone and staying there, regardless of any pain it may have caused him on their way down underneath his skin. She had loved him in her own way, not because of all the good she was able to see in him, but because she had seen and welcomed and matched the darkness in him.
Matt is the Devil of Hell's Kitchen, he reveals to you one day. And even while you seethe and scream and cry at him, you get it now. He is a man that you know has so much light in him, the kind of light that is white and blinding and warm, yet he sees himself as a man doomed to only live in a world as black as the nothingness that is his lack of sight.
He doesn't need to tell you in order for you to understand the appeal of Elektra and the way she had captivated him, though now he admits that he hadn’t been drawn to her like a moth to a flame, but rather like a stray cat to a wealthy home. He doesn't need to tell you how desperate he'd been for someone to see the darker side of him, how desperate he'd been for someone to see that side of him and love him for it.
At some point he begins to understand how toxic she was for him, how manipulative, and you’re there by his side as the realization finally sets in, the trauma of it burning him so harshly it causes blisters and leaves behind missing patches of skin and muscle. You do your best to hold him together through it, because as awful as the scar she's left behind is, a piece of him mourns her when she's laid to rest for the first time, and then the second.
The true horror of the situation comes from the fact that you know there’s a tiny part of him that wishes he had been laid to rest, too. You know there’s a tiny part of him that will always be buried with the dust and rock and ash that lays underneath the new building on 44th and 11th.
It takes time for him to heal. Years and years of abandonment trauma is difficult to break down, difficult to break through, and you make sure you prove day in and day out that you're not going anywhere, despite how much he may throw at you, despite how much he tries to test you and shove you away with hands bloodied by the gashes gaping open in his heart. But all of his efforts to keep you away are futile, because staying by his side is still the easiest thing you've ever done.
(“Aren’t you tired of having to pick me up off the ground, over and over and over?”
“That’s what friends are for, Matt. To help when needed.”
“Yeah, when someone is having a rough time at their job, or fighting with a partner. Not cleaning up after a vigilante who can’t get their shit together. It’s not the same.”)
You help guide him into a new chapter in his life, though sometimes he remains frozen in the one behind him, feet glued to the ground even while he tries to force them forward. Gradually, though, he begins to spend less and less time focused on the past, more on the present, and eventually, more on the future. He finally reaches a point where he achieves balance, in a way you've never seen him existing and thriving in before.
Nelson, Murdock and Page flourishes, he begins to trust in the way law enforcement has been flushed of any crooked officers, and at last he allows himself to rest here and there, at last he gives himself permission to slow down, if only for a moment. Peace is all you have ever wanted for him, this beautiful man who has always struggled to find harmony within himself.
Peace changes him.
And in changing him, it changes you, and changes the way you fall into each other. It alters the way he begins to orbit around you, finally, finally, echoing the way you've always orbited him. He becomes the force holding you up after you’ve spent years doing the same for him.
It takes a good long while for him to understand the love you've always felt for him, initially puzzled that someone could accept him so completely and ardently, without question and without asking for anything in return. And it takes even longer for him to realize that this love is for both sides of him, not just the side that exists between sun-up and sun-down.
Once the full weight of your love for him is at his feet, once he feels it settle in his chest, it's as if a dam bursts, and he suddenly finds himself willing and able and hungry to grasp it and return it in its entirety, and then some.
Your first kiss is as turbulent as he is, reflecting both his desire to be gentle and savor the moment, and his need to take what he wants, consequences be damned.
This unconditional love is something he never thought he'd have, he says. Something that he had known, deep down, was missing with Elektra. It's an idea that has unexpectedly moved from nonexistent to abstract to tangible, and he tells you he's in awe of it, in awe of you.
He’s had your heart in his hands for over a decade, and you cry when he finally hands you his.
He has always loved you, he mumbles into your ear one night, legs tangled together on his soft silk sheets. But he doesn't lie to you and tell you that his love for you has always been there in the same capacity as yours has been for him. You both know that he had only ever seen you as a friend until recently, and even though you tell him not to, he regrets all the time he spent looking for something that was right in front of him the whole time.
Elektra had come along and understood him in a way he'd never dreamed of, and she had been willing, and selfishly eager, to accept the pieces of him that he'd always felt he had to hide. Though he sees now how his love for her had almost damaged him to a point of no return, he is grateful, he says, believing she had freed him from a life that wanted to chain him into inaction.
Day after day, night after night, he tells you that he loves every piece of you; he loves you for your laughter, he loves you for your willingness to help others with no thought of yourself, and he loves you for your ability to think first and act later. It's something he has never quite managed, he admits with a quiet laugh.
He loves you for the pieces of you that never give up on him, the pieces that never let him push you away, the pieces that love him, even while he can't always love himself.
But your favorite part is when he tells you that he loves the way you accept every piece of him without thought, without fear, without judgment, and that he vows to love and accept every piece of you the same way.
(“I love you.”
“You loved her once upon a time, too, Matt.”
“But not like this, sweetheart. Never like this. It’s not the same.”)
And it's enough. It's more than enough.
You find yourself struggling to move past the hatred you feel for her, the hatred for what she did to him. But eventually, you accept the truth that she freed a part of this wonderful man; this man who is so good that it breaks your heart to know he doesn't see it in himself. She freed the part of Matt who, without it, might have been shackled to a world in which he would never have felt complete. She was the one who gave him the encouragement he needed to embrace this side of him, embrace the Devil, embrace the part of him that could do more.
He doesn't use that freedom and darkness in a way Elektra would have anticipated, or in a way that she would have felt matched her own dark desires and intensity. Instead, he chooses to channel his anger and skill into a way that helps people just as much as his hard-earned law degree does. He fights with both his fists and his words, and you love him all the more for it.
You remind yourself, every day, that Elektra once upon a time had been the one to give him what he needed, though she had ripped it away brutally when she realized she wasn't going to get out of it what she wanted. But you are what both Matt and the Devil need now, what he will always need, as the pair of you move forward together. You both know it, both revel in it, and are now unable to pick apart the pieces that are you, and the pieces that are him.
You've taken years to get here. It may have been bittersweet and painful and full of truths that went unspoken, but he is the love of your life, and you believe him when he swears to you that you are his.
Hell's Kitchen doesn't deserve him. The neighborhood doesn't deserve the blood, sweat, and tears he willingly sacrifices for it, but you know he will never give up on it and the people who call it home. You aren't quite sure if you will ever deserve him, either, but you know you will spend the rest of your life trying.

A/n: I've been hoarding this for a long while and finally finished it off. This is what everyone wants, right? 😉
Tumblr media
As you down the dregs of your second drink and were considering ordering a third, you finally admit to yourself that you'd been stood up. You checked your phone yet again, the battery draining fast from the amount of times you'd unlocked it and refreshed for notifications just in case. It was even more frustrating that you'd been ghosted as this guy had actually seemed like he was really nice. Well shit, turns out they're all the fucking same.
You raise your head, about to stand up and get the bartender's attention but as you look up a woman was there, right in front of your table, smiling at you. She's very beautiful, with poker straight dark chocolate coloured hair, a deep red dress that skims her curves with a pair of killer heels to match, and dark eyes that draw you in.
"Um, can I help you?" You ask politely.
She smiles again. "If your date hasn't been ambushed by ninjas on his way here, he's not worth it darling." She turns to the bar. "Another round, and whatever the lady wants, bring it to our table."
She has an accent, from somewhere in Europe you guessed. And she smells amazing. You watch her tip the bartender generously before she turns back to you.
"Come join us. I know it's no fun drinking alone. My name is Elektra, and he," she gestured to the low table in the far corner of the restaurant. "is Matthew."
You look over to where your eyes had been subconsciously flitting most of the night. You supposed it couldn't be helped, they were an attractive couple, and the woman, Elektra, had briefly caught your eye when she saw you looking over earlier. The man you already knew was Matt Murdock, the Kingpin, one of the most powerful men in the city. He was famous, handsome, and extremely dangerous. And you were let-down, bored and had nothing to lose.
Despite his blindness, he throws you a grin as Elektra walks you over to their table, you offer your hand and are both taken aback and charmed as he brings it to his lips, kissing the back of it with a softness you didn't expect.
"Who's this you've brought me 'lektra? A new friend?"
You could feel the power almost rolling off him at this close distance, he was sharply dressed in an expensive tailored suit that probably cost your salary, and it perfectly matched the colour of Elektra's dress. His tie was loosened slightly around his neck with the top button of his dark plum silk shirt undone, his eyes hidden behind a pair of deep red oval glasses and red hair slightly ruffled as if someone had just run their fingers through it. It was in no way an exaggeration to say he had devilish good looks.
You introduced yourself to both of them and Elektra beckoned you to sit next to her.
"She had a very undeserving date." She explained, bringing colour to your cheeks as you shyly sipped on your cocktail. "I thought we would could show her a good time and perhaps make it up to her."
"Oh my, of course," Matthew purrs, "men are such assholes, aren't they?"
Elektra cackles and you soon join her, agreeing and clinking glasses and falling into easy conversation with these two utterly entrancing people who, currently unbeknownst to you, were going to show you the best night of your life.
A couple of hours had passed, along with a few more drinks. Elektra fed you canapés and you were laughing more and more as it seemed to bring the most gorgeous smile to Matthew's lips, and somehow you found yourself eager to please him. When you turn to look over the room you realised some of the patrons were looking right back.
"Oh, people are looking…" you whispered, trying to sink down and hide in your drink.
Matt chuckles. "Yes, staring at us. Jealousy is such a terrible thing. Do you perhaps want to go somewhere a little more private, sweetheart?"
You looked between them, unsure, your heart suddenly racing at the potential meaning in the question, as well as the added endearment.
"I-I…" your liquid courage had faded slightly but the soft warm touch of Elektra's hand over yours relaxed you more than you'd have thought as Matt continued.
"No pressure at all angelface, but I do have a nice little room upstairs."
Elektra leans in, "He means a penthouse. He owns this entire building."
You can't help but gawp slightly, this was no cheap diner you were sitting in. "You own this place? Do you live here?"
Elektra smiles and Matthew shrugs like it's nothing. "Some of the time. He flicks a stray lock of hair out of his eyes. "Would you like to see? Like I said, no pressure, but we'd both love if you would join us."
You turn the proposition over in your mind - they were two of the most gorgeous people you had spent time with, they even smelled amazing, and they only seemed to want to show you a good time. Your eyes absently follow Elektra's slender fingers to Matt's thigh where she strokes and squeezes. He leans over to her and whispers something that makes her lips split in a grin showing nearly all of her beautiful white teeth.
You finish your drink, licking your lips and picking up your purse, your mind suddenly very firmly made up.
"Show me then."
The ride in the private elevator up to the penthouse is something else. Elektra took your hand in hers, leading you out of the restaurant as Matt was leaving a very generous tip before catching you up. You're all smiles and giggles as Matt presses his key against the lock of the lift and Elektra pulls you inside.
"You're such a pretty one," she was like a big cat that has you pinned and ready to devour as soon as the door slid closed, and you blush again as she strokes the side of your face, so very close to you you can feel her breath. "whoever the jerk was that stood you up should be cursing himself right now…"
Her fingers slide under your chin, her thumb resting lightly on your lower lip leaving you dumbfounded as her sultry gaze meets your eyes.
"May I?" She asks, and you're only half certain of what she's asking permission for but you nod quickly, murmuring a soft yes that melts into a moan as her mouth meets your own. She moves her lips against yours so delicately, like she knows you may never have kissed a woman before. She tastes as good as she looks, her scent and the sensation of her warm wet tongue on yours making your body heat up infinitely, and your hands automatically reach for her then halt, unsure of what's allowed.
As if he can hear your thoughts, Matthew answers from behind you. "Touch her, go on."
Your tentative fingers curl gently around the back of her long elegant neck holding her as she deepens the kiss, while your other hand grazes up the outside of her thigh where the split in her dress reveals her smooth bare skin. Her own hands continue to snake through your hair and curl around your waist, holding you closer so you can feel her warmth, feel the soft press of her breasts against your own.
You gasp, leaning against the wall of the elevator and tilting your head back as Elektra trails more kisses under your jaw and down the side of your neck to your decolletage.
Your eyes close and you feel Matthew beside you. "She's good isn't she, doll?"
You moan in agreement as Elektra fondles your breasts through your black strappy dress, teasing your hardened nipples with her fingers, teeth and tongue. You were already aroused at the bar, and you squeeze your thighs together, feeling yourself getting wetter with every passing second, still wondering if this is all a dream.
Then the elevator pings, signaling that you've reached the top floor and the doors open to reveal a tastefully extravagant penthouse apartment before you.
"Oh, here we are!" She says teasingly, grabbing your hand again and Matt's, leading you both to the bedroom. It's the biggest bed you've ever seen and you wouldn't be surprised to learn if it's had many more people than three in it.
Matt's hand sneaks around your waist and you hold your breath as his lips brush your shoulder. "Can I get you anything sweetie?"
Your eyes are drawn to his plump lips as he runs his wicked tongue over to wet them.
"I… no, thank you Mr Murdock."
His grin is dark and delicious. "'Mr Murdock'. Mm, I like that…"
He leaves you temporarily alone with Elektra as he goes to the bar to fix a drink. She guides you to the edge of the bed, her deep brown eyes roving over your form as she raises her hand to your shoulder, pulling the strap to one side, and you shrug off the other, letting your dress to puddle on the floor leaving you in black lacy panties. You reach for her again, your fingers trailing up her arms and leaning in closer as you kiss for a second time. She breaks it off gently to turn around, raising her hair up so you can access the zip of her dress.
"Would you please?"
You oblige of course, taking your time drawing it down, kissing her neck and her shoulders as she did for you, down between her shoulder blades and down her spine to her lower back where you kneel as she pushes the remaining fabric off over her bare hips. She hadn't been wearing any underwear all evening.
She turns again and your face is right in front of her neatly trimmed mound. She looks down at you and smiles, beckoning you to your feet and then guiding you to kneel on the bed, following you and slotting her thighs between your own. You want to kiss her again and she welcomes it, her hands moving yours to her breasts as she encourages you to explore. She's so very firm yet yielding, her entire body is sculpted so athletically but you marvel at her softness, desperate to feel and perhaps taste all of her.
A whimper escapes your throat when you feel her soft touch between your thighs, her fingers stroking lightly over your panties, teasing you through the fabric.
You moan into her mouth, your tongue lapping softly against hers when she slips her hand inside to touch your slick cunt.
"Mmm, so nice and wet darling, good girl." She purrs and you feel your pussy throb and ache at her praise.
"Does she like it?" You hear Matthew ask as Elektra slowly starts rubbing right over your clit then slides two of her fingers down between your soaking folds, gently pushing them up inside you.
"Oh yes, fuck… yes!" You cry out, whining at the sudden loss when she withdraws, licking your juices from them.
"Mm, I'd say so." You can hear her smile.
"It's okay angel, lie down." Matt is at the foot of the bed, now his tie is gone and shirt is undone you can see just how incredibly ripped his body is. Your eyes cast downward to the rather large bulge in his slacks and you can't help how your body automatically clenches around nothing as you fantasize about him fucking you.
"I think she sees something she likes…" Elektra notes and you turn to look at her hungrily.
"I do, oh I do, but I want to… can I taste you first?" You ask her tentatively.
"Oh my darling, of course…" she carefully moves over you, hovering over your face, her gorgeous pussy on display for you. You quickly wrap your arms around her thighs and pull her down onto your mouth, reveling in the sensual sound she makes as your tongue licks a slow, wide stripe right up the middle of her. You discover you love her taste, musky but sweet, and you lap up as much of it as you can, swirling your tongue around and suckling on her swollen clit just the way that you would like, keen to find out if she does too.
You jerk as you feel warm hands on your hips, fingers hooking around the waistband of your panties and pulling them slowly down your legs. The bed dips slightly as you feel him, the kingpin, hitch your legs up and spread them gently apart. You moan deeply into Elektra's pussy as the warm whisper of his breath fans over your own exposed core.
"Forgive me, I just had this overwhelming urge to make you come on my mouth. Can I taste you, beautiful?" Matt asks so sweetly you could never say no, but you feel like he would stop right away if you ever did. You hear him as he takes a deep inhale and groans.
"You smell so delicious, little dove,"
You whimper again, still licking and fucking the beautiful woman above you with your tongue as you feel Matt swipe his thumb through your arousal, spreading it over your sensitive bud before he puts his mouth on you.
Your whole body feels alight. Turned on beyond belief, you encourage Elektra to grind onto your mouth as Matthew's extremely talented tongue works on taking you ever closer to coming apart. When he slides two of his fingers inside you briefly think of a shitty joke about blind men and g-spots before he finds yours with apparently zero effort, making you moan loud and buck your hips uncontrollably. He seems to know exactly what you like as if he's reading your body like Braille, you swear you can feel him smugly grinning against your cunt before he draws away for a second to speak.
"Think you can make her cum when I make you cum?"
"Oh she can Matthew, I know she can." Elektra answers breathlessly for you while you double down, trying your best to keep the rhythm that she likes while Matt fucks you with his fingers just the way you need. You feel your orgasm zeroing in, and you hold her fast to you as you start to shake. He latches onto your clit, flicking the tip and flat of his tongue over and over.
"Yes, just like that sweetheart, that's a good girl…"
And you don't know how but he makes you squirt as you come for the first time, gushing hard over his hand as he pumps his fingers inside you until you can't take any more. Your loud shuddering moans mingle with Elektra's as she throws her head back and you feel her twitching around you as she keeps grinding her wet pussy into your lips and tongue as she reaches her peak too.
You let her ride her pleasure out and she carefully dismounts lying on the bed beside you, turning onto her side to kiss her essence from your mouth as you both pant and gasp from the aftershocks of your orgasms.
"Fuck. I- I've never done any of that before!" You laugh with a warm feeling of relief, your body relaxing like goo into the mattress and they both smile, Matt making you giggle with the soft kisses he's trailing along your inner thighs.
"You are so good for us darling, so, so good." Elektra sighs with pleasure, and you shimmy further back onto the bed, propping yourself up on some pillows as you watch Matt stand and take off his pants and tented silk boxers in one smooth motion. His cock is impressive to say the least, springing up from between his thick thighs to smack against the tempting landscape of well defined abdominal muscles. You can't help but stare as he strokes himself with his hand as if he's putting on a show just for you.
"Tell me you're not glad your date stood you up." Elektra asks, grinning at you wickedly and you're almost surprised you're not drooling.
"So incredibly glad…' you reply, watching as Murdock teases his thumb over the head of his cock.
"Would you like to ride him, pretty girl?" She gestures to Matt as you watch him prowl onto the bed and settle down on his back beside you. "He's very good…" she adds.
You're practically eating him with your eyes. "Please… yes, god, yes please-" the words tumble out of your mouth and you try your best to hold yourself together as he guides you closer, his hands smoothing over your hips as you steady yourself on all fours above him.
Delicate fingertips dance across the skin of your back, your ass and around to your inner thighs making you let out a breath you'd been holding as he cups his hand over your pussy and pulls you down with the other behind your neck to his lips.
He tastes of you at first, but it melts away and lets you become addicted to the deeper, more delicious essence that's just so him. You may be on top but he's entirely in control, his hand slipping around under your jaw to your throat and holding you there as he licks his tongue against yours making you moan with pure want. He teases you, sliding his fingers between your folds through your wetness and leaving you needy as he takes his hand away to spread it over his cock. The action makes you clench and the corner of his mouth pulls up as if he can sense it.
"I think you're ready for me, aren't you sweetheart?"
You let out the breath you were holding, and your affirmation comes out as more of a moan than words.
He smiles, holding himself in hand, teasing you, running the head of his hard cock through your slick needy cunt so painfully slowly you want to beg him to hurry up and just ram you with it. But oh, the anticipation when he's lined up, just before he eases you down onto him creates a sizzling heat that spreads like a wildfire through your body, when you finally sink onto him and he fills you full.
"Mm angel, you feel so. fucking. good!"
His voice deepens to almost-purr, and you close your eyes, let him guide your hips with his hands, let him push a river of nonsensical euphoric words and whimpers from your lips as you begin to ride him.
"This okay for you, kitten?" He inquires with a grin.
You almost splutter out a laugh at the innocence in his question as he's fucking you into oblivion, but you're too lost in the sensation, too cock dumb to form any actual words so you just moan and nod hoping he can feel it.
Elektra's arms embrace you from behind, guiding you to sit up on your knees. Her hands cup your breasts and your head falls back against her shoulder as she teases and pinches your peaked nipples, connecting a fiery jolt of pleasure right to your core. Her body is molded perfectly to yours, moving with you as you rise and fall, her hand snaking down to your hip, her fingers interlocking with Matt's on your heated skin while the other slides slowly down your stomach and between your legs. She touches you again, drawing firm tight circles around your throbbing clit in time with Matthew's hips as they snap powerfully, relentlessly upward.
"Oh sweet girl, I can feel you getting closer…"
A moan escapes from your parted lips, they're driving you hard and fast to a mind blowing crescendo…
"C'mon beautiful, let go for me. Let me feel you come."
It's impossible to deny him or Elektra, crying out with pleasure as you reach your peak, watching in amazement as the Kingpin of Hell's Kitchen follows you into ecstasy as your pussy clenches repeatedly around his cock. He moans so beautifully, bucking up into you as your body milks him for all he's worth. Elektra is pushing you just that little bit farther until you're on the edge of yet another orgasm.
"Such a good girl for us…" her silky voice soothes into your ear until you're coming yet again, shuddering with overstimulation and begging her to stop. With aching thighs you carefully dismount from Matt's softening cock. He immediately pulls you close, kissing your forehead, Elektra curls her arms around you too bracketing you between them both and nuzzling into your nape. A contented sigh leaves your lips
The next morning once you're washed and treated to an incredible breakfast, it's finally time to leave this unbelievable bubble of sin that you'd been swept up into. You linger by the elevator door, Matthew has already called you a car at your request.
You suddenly find yourself blushing as it's time to go, even after everything you've done together.
"Thank you, um… for last night. I'm thinking I should let myself get stood up more often."
Both Matt and Elektra grin before kissing you on the cheek.
"if you give me that asshole's name and number, I'd like to teach him a little lesson in how to respect a lady... and, anytime you'd like to play, sweetheart," Matt says, producing a sleek business card seemingly from out of nowhere, "just call."

Speak Now (Matt Murdock x fem!Reader)
Author’s Note: Howdy everyone! This fic was voted #2 to post in a poll I did a few weeks ago! I’ve been working with this idea for a while (ie like 9 months), and it’s reverse circumstances of this fic I wrote back in July. I was at work earlier this week with my music on shuffle, and Taylor Sift popped on the playlist, and I’m like “hmm, this works for the fic, I think”, so I’m gonna call reverse ex-post facto inspiration? Alright, now I’m rambling. Enjoy! :)
Summary: Being friends with both Elektra and Matt is by no means easy, especially with them being a couple and your long-standing love for one blind attorney. But regardless, you told yourself you’d always be there for them, no matter what—and that includes being there for them on their wedding day.
Warnings: Angst, hurt comfort, fluff, love confessions, guilt/heartache, ignoring feelings
Other Characters: Foggy Nelson, Elektra Natchios, Father Lantom
Word Count: 3,014
Tumblr media
It’s fine. You just need to remember to breathe. Foggy has the rings, Father Lantom and Maggie have everything set in the main church—everything is fine. Just a few more minutes, and it’s all over. We get that started, we get down the aisle, and we get Matt and Elektra married. Easy peasy.
“Oh, sorry!” you hear Foggy say, his hands firmly on your shoulders to prevent you from falling down as you bump into one another.
“Thanks!” you breathe, steadying yourself.
“Why are you running around the church like a frantic chicken?”
“Just a lot of energy, you know? Adrenaline. Gotta get it out before the ceremony starts.”
“And how are you doing?” Foggy asks.
“Fine.”
“No, (Y/N), how are you doing?”
“What do you mean?” you try, but to no avail.
“C’mon. You know.”
“I’m hanging on by threads,” you admit shakily. “It’s a lot.”
“Being a bridesmaid and watching your friends get married? Or watching Matt get married to someone else?”
“No, Foggy,” you interject, now determined to kill the conversation where it stands. You thought you put the final nail in the coffin of that thought a year ago at the engagement party.
“But you love him!” he whisper yells.
“Yes, I do! And it’s because I love him that I can’t say anything. For the first time in his life, Matt is happy. He’s ready to do something that he never thought he’d get the chance to enjoy, let alone have, and just as much goes for Elektra. So, I will watch them go down the aisle, I will stand by them as they commit their love and lives to one another, I will watch them kiss and smile and dance, I will help send them off on their honeymoon, watch them welcome their children, and watch them grow old and happy together! They will be happy—finally happy—and that’s what matters.”
“So your happiness doesn’t matter?”
“Not when it comes to Matt’s happiness. Matt’s will always come before mine, and that’s a guarantee.”
“(Y/N)—.”
“Every. Time,” you repeat. “I can’t jeopardize that on the off-chance that he feels an inkling of anything more toward me. I can’t hurt Elektra like that, and I sure as hell can’t unload on Matt like that.”
“But isn’t it better knowing for sure rather than always wondering what if?”
“No,” you say weakly. “Because right now, I know for sure that Matt is happy. I see it in the way he walks, the way he smiles, the way he answers the phone. He is happy, Foggy. And I need to be happy for him. Now, I need to make sure my makeup isn’t ruined, and then I need to go help Elektra before she walks down the aisle.”
“(Y/N)—!”
You pick up the skirt of your dress slightly so you don’t trip, creating as much distance between Foggy and yourself that you can.
Tumblr media
“(Y/N), I was worried!” Elektra says as you come back from the bathroom down the hall, having dried your tears and collected yourself from your conversation with Foggy. “I couldn’t find you anywhere! Are you alright?”
“I promise, it’s nothing. You look so beautiful,” you tell her as you spread out her train, plucking off minute pieces of lint from the carpet that clung white fabric.
She gives you a hug and holds me close. “(Y/N)?” she asks as you part. “Can I ask you to do me one last huge favor?”
“I’m your maid of honor—it’s what I’m here for.”
“I know I said I wanted to walk down the aisle alone, but I’m wondering if you would be willing to give me away to Matthew?”
The request is so genuine and the look of hope in her eyes is undeniable. “Of course,” you breathe. “I’m here for you, El. Always.”
She kisses your cheeks and absolutely beams.
“I can’t believe this is finally happening.”
“I’m so happy for you,” you tell her, looping your arm through hers as we get to the double doors. The music begins to kick up and you hear the rustle of people stand just before the doors open, exposing the both of you to the excited eyes of many. It’s far more difficult than you anticipated to plaster on a smile and keep tears at bay when you walk down the aisle next to Elektra, seeing Matt stand there in a tux looking so happy.
God, you wish he was waiting there for you.
That ship has sailed. You can’t drown yourself trying to chase the thought, because you will sink and no one will ever find you. You had opportunities to tell him how you really felt, and you didn’t. You have to live with that.
You don’t know how you’ve managed to get down the aisle so fast with time moving so slow. You can’t bring yourself to say a single word as you place Elektra’s hand in Matt’s before you step to the side to take your place, praying for all eyes to be on them so no one has to watch you suffer with a smile on your face. You affix your eyes on a column just behind Foggy’s head, not willing to try and catch a glimpse of anything that will cause you to feel the multitude of emotions bubbling in your chest.
It’ll be over soon. You’re doing the right thing. This is how it’s supposed to happen. They deserve one another. Words and phrases like these play on your mind in an endless loop as the ceremony progresses, silently praying that you’ll be zoned out enough for when they finally kiss to not process it when you’re drawn to the words coming from Father Lantom’s mouth.
“Elektra Natchios, do you take Matthew Murdock to be your lawfully wedded spouse?” he asks.
To your surprise, she doesn’t answer immediately. You watch her let out a long breath before she gives Matt’s hands a squeeze, the pause and silence growing longer and louder with each passing moment.
“Can we talk?” you hear her whisper to Matt.
“Ellie, what’s wrong?” Matt responds softly, his words barely audible.
Without another word, she takes his hand and they move back up the aisle, and you watch them take a turn to where Elektra was was getting ready just before the ceremony. You lock eyes with Foggy. He wordlessly asks if you know what’s going on with a scrunch of his eyebrows, and you just arch yours in response—the universal cue for “I don’t know”.
“All the excitement,” Father Lantom chuckles, addressing a confused crowd. “They probably need a moment to collect themselves.” He twists toward you before speaking in hushed tones. “Do you know what’s going on?”
“It’s probably like you said—excitement,” you breathe. Or cold feet. But Elektra wouldn’t do that. She’s been waiting so long for a moment like this. For this moment, with Matt. “If they’re not back in a minute, I’ll go check on them.”
The minute passes in the slowest manner possible, but nonetheless, you stick to your word and scurry in the most non-alarming fashion possible to follow where they went. When you’re unable to hear any voices through the only door they’d be behind, you raise your knuckles to the wood.
“Guys?” you knock gently. “Are you doing alright?”
“Yeah, just give us a second,” Matt says, but not before Elektra swings the door open.
“Can you come in for a moment?” she asks softly, and you can see the conflict written all over her face. You let out a small breath, conceding to her request and closing the door behind you.
“Can I get you guys—?” you start, only to be cut off mid-sentence.
“(Y/N), tell us,” Elektra starts, her breathing steady and calm. “Tell us we’re doing the right thing. Tell us we should be getting married.”
“What kind of question is that?” you ask, truly confused.
“I need to hear you say it.”
“Elektra—.”
“Repeat the sentences.”
You take a breath, looking at them. “You both love one another. People in love get married. You’re listening to your hearts.”
“You can’t say it.”
“Ellie, I—.”
“You’re holding something back,” Matt adds, his tongue peaking out to lick his lips. “What aren’t you telling us?” His tone is telling. He knows. Damn super hearing.
You sigh, desperately trying to steady your heart rate and deflect. “You’re both just letting the nerves get to you. You’re getting in your heads.”
“We need to hear you say it,” Elektra tries once more. “Please.”
You sigh, feeling your chest tightening. “You’re doing the right thing. You two should get married. You belong together.” You feel like you’re going to be sick as the last piece of your heart shatters before evaporating into nothingness. “I’m going to make sure that everyone is staying calm. I’ll see you both out there soon, okay?”
As you leave the quiet room, you hear the rush of dress shoes follow after you.
“Hey,” Matt says softly, gently catching your arm.
“Matt, things have been delayed enough. We shouldn’t hold them up any longer.”
“You’re still holding something back.”
“Matt—.”
“I can’t get married if my best friend is lying to me about something. (Y/N), please,” he breathes heavily. “Please, just tell me the truth.”
“You look at her the way I always wished you’d look at me, and I die a little bit inside every time I see it,” you admit feebly, watching his expression change through bleary eyes. “That look . . . God, Matt, you love her! I don’t matter in this. Just go and be with her, and for once in your life, stop being such a masochist and be happy!”
With anguish and regret, you pull your arm free from Matt’s grip, making a turn for the double doors that lead outside rather than the ones that lead into the cathedral, needing get as far away from Clinton Church as you can.
Tumblr media
“How’d you know I’d be here?” you mumble as you curl into yourself in your favorite reading room at the Columbia Law Library.
“I didn’t,” Matt sighs as he takes a few steps over and sits next to you. “This is where I go when I need to think.”
“Bullshit.”
“Okay, you caught me. I locked in on your heartbeat and followed it.”
“Why, Matt?”
“Why what?”
“Don’t shit with me, Matt,” you sigh in defeat, taking in his undone bowtie and general state of dishevelment in his formal attire. “Why didn’t you just go through with it, Matt? You two love each other.”
“But we love you, too. You’ve always been there for us, even when anyone with a modicum of common sense would have left us.” He turns toward you. “Why didn’t you say anything? To either of us?”
“It wasn’t my place. She loves you, and you love her. Simple as that.”
“But I love you, too.”
“Not in the same way.”
“(Y/N).” He takes your hands in his, his thumbs grazing over your knuckles. “I do love you like that. I didn’t think you felt the same, and my God, I was too afraid to ask. I didn’t want to lose my best friend. I couldn’t lose you.”
You sniffle, still refusing to meet his eyes. “Don’t let Foggy hear that, it’ll give him a complex.”
You hear a small chuckle escape his lips. “It’s true though. I’m not sure what I’d do if I did something that meant not having you in my life. I just kept my feelings locked away deep down in my heart because I knew I needed you in my life however I could have you. And then I heard what you told Foggy, and I . . .” He rests his forehead on yours and nudges you with his nose so you finally look at his face. “Can you give me a chance?”
“I want to, Matt, but . . .”
“Please don’t say but.”
“I’d look at you, and I would only think about how I ruined the happiest day of your life. Besides. You’re the ex now. It’s friend rule number one not to date their ex, no matter how you feel about them. And Elektra . . . I couldn’t do that to her.”
“Even if she gives her blessing?”
You whip your head around, seeing Elektra standing in black jeans and a red turtleneck, her leather jacket covering most of it.
“Elektra, I’m so—,” you start.
“You don’t need to apologize, darling. None of it was your fault.” She moves to your other side and wraps her arms around you, pulling you into a hug. “Before you came to find Matt and I . . . We spoke, and we’re okay. We’ll always love one another, but not in the way that we deserve. But you two . . . You two can. You already have. I’ve seen it. And you’re a shit liar, my darling. I always thought . . . But when you put my hand in Matt’s at the altar, I knew for certain.” She gently tucks some of your loose hair behind your ear. “You just need to have the courage to take the next step.” She gently tilts your face to look at hers. “I’m okay.”
You look between them—Elektra’s eyes filled with resolve and calm, Matt’s a storm of a million emotions, and you can feel how your heart tears in half. Feeling like the room is closing in on you and the air is being pulled from your lungs, you grab your things and rush past them, needing the cool sting of crisp autumn air to help you feel something else then the hot guilt coursing through your veins.

Maybe Matt won’t come in today. The man did take the week off for his honeymoon, after all. But, he is his own boss and can change that as he pleases. Still, the weekend was eventful as hell. Maybe he needed a day. Maybe if you just keep your head down long enough, you won’t have to catch the sympathetic and pitiful glances of Foggy and Karen. No client appointments are scheduled today, either, so—.
“Hey,” you hear a gently voice say at your desk. Looking up, you see Matt with two cups of coffee in his hands. “Got your usual.”
“Thanks,” you say softly, taking it from him, your heart skipping a beat as your fingers brush against one another. You just want things to go back to normal, as if the weekend didn’t happen. This is a sign that Matt wants that too—a drip of normalcy. But why does he have to sound so tender like that?
“Do you have some time?”
“Matt, I—.”
“Please?”
Damn. He knows you can’t say no when he sounds like that.
“Y-Yeah,” you say softly. “How about we go for a walk?”
He nods, letting you get up and put on your jacket. When you get to his side, you take his elbow out of habit, freezing after a few steps when guilt hits you like a freight train to your chest.
“(Y/N)—,” he tries softly.
“I can’t do this,” you tell him quietly, tears stinging at your lashes and nose. “I’m sorry, Matt, I just can’t do this.”
“Why?”
“Because, Matt! Because I look at you, and I know how I feel! I feel guilt that I am what came between you finally being happy and getting something you’ve told me time and time again you never thought you’d have. I look at you, and still love you as much as the day that I met you and I can’t stop it. But I know that I can’t be what you need because I will never be able to understand you in the way that you deserve—the way Elektra can. I’m just me, Matt. I’m just me.”
You’re not prepared for what he says next. “And what makes you think I don’t love you just the way that you are? For everything that you are? That I’m glad you can’t understand me in those dark ways because you’re the sunshine that makes the darkness easier to deal with? That I know that the only person that I could ever really be with and be happy with is you? That I don’t love you with my entire heart?”
The way that you feel tears fall onto the fabric of your shirt let you know just how hard and fast you’re crying. The way that Matt puts his coffee next to yours so he can cup your face and wipe your tears away only adds to the gravity of his words.
“Please, angel,” he continues gently. “Please let me help you realize just how much you mean to me. Just how deeply I love you. Because I will spend the rest of my life doing just that, no matter what you say.”
You don’t know what else to do except pull him in for a kiss. It’s not pretty or graceful. It’s wet and snotty and shaky—everything that a first kiss shouldn’t be. But the way that one of Matt’s hands stays on your face as the other moves around the back of your head so his fingers weave into your hair tells you that it’s everything he could ever want. When he finally pulls away, you do what you can to wipe off your tears that fell onto his cheeks.
“I love you,” you whisper as your thumbs skate across his skin.
“I love you, too, angel,” he breathes, resting his forehead on yours. “I love you so much.”
“C-Can, uh,” you sniffle. “What next?”
“We go for that walk? Talk about anything and everything. We can figure this out. I want to figure this out.”
You nod as Matt wipes the last of your tears away. “Sounds good.”
He kisses you softly once more and loops his arm in yours as we walk out of the office. The way he holds onto you tells you that he never intends on letting go.
