Text
I did that undertale mirror trend except different because my Shadow's really goin through it and I wanted to really encapsulate the stages of his character arc in it. Besides, it's always nice to end on a hopeful note♡.
If the character designs in the last canvas are new to you or you're just curious, I made a post last night showcasing and explaining them.->

Hello! I just wanted to say: I grew up listening to Dark Mirror as narrated by John de Lancie, on cassettes I borrowed from the local library.
It was a formative experience.
<3
I imagine. :)
(I haven't listened to that one myself, but i know how evil John can sound when he wants to... and i have to say, whoever chose him to narrate that made a smart pick.)

(slight spoilers for Book 7, tho i take it a lot of us have seen Hornton's overblot form + mama Draconia's design at this point lmao. also i'm calling her Draconimom until we get a confirmed eng spelling for her name)
Overblot mask analysis – Malleus + Dark Mirror v2
it's probably been brought up already but i'm gonna be annoyed w/ myself if i leave overblot hornton out of my overblot mask analyses, it's pretty straightforward overall but STILL
Tumblr media
Similar to Vil, the main body of Malleus' mask takes on the shape of a cowl, echoing that of Maleficent's own headgear. This widow's peak-esque shape was already present in the design of Malleus' forehead scales (which aren't normally visible), but the mask better emulates Maleficent by bringing the point down closer to the brow line.
The central V of the mask has a fiery exterior trim; on closer inspection, the "flames" appear to be made solely of shapes based on Malleus' (and Maleficent's) horns. In comparison, the motifs on the further edges of the mask seem to be just basic fire patterns.
Arcs of spikes & scales make up both the interior trim of the mask and the portion connecting to Malleus' eyes. These directly mimic the spines and purple underbelly of Maleficent's dragon form. (The scales on his cheekbones don't correlate to any part of Maleficent's face, humanoid or dragon, and are likely there just to complement this part of the mask.)
Of note is the spiked line extending from the peak of the mask down over Malleus' nasal bone. Rather than representing part of Maleficent's face design, it appears to take after a different source–
Tumblr media
–the main body of the mask is literally his mom's crown. which hurts a bit! own it tho ig, like hey if he's gonna be under so much pressure due to being prince then he might as well get an overblot mask to represent that. "heavy is the head that wears the crown," etc
Tumblr media
Anyway this is like a field day for me bc Draconimom's design is literally so fantastic to analyze. I'm getting hit with the urge to make diagrams. Do u realize how rarely this happens
1. The horns? The horns. I don't think I have to go over this one again. However, the little bumps near the horns on the mask could signify the two…ear guards(?) of the crown.
2. The upper two curved prongs lined w/ dots and spikes on the Dark Mirror's mask match up strikingly well with Draconimom's pauldrons! The lower two prongs bend in the opposite direction, and seem to be there just to balance out the top pair.
3. Like the tattered edges of Maleficent's robes, the lacy edges of her cape could easily be compared to the fiery edges on the upper half of the mask. Comparatively, the frills along the bottom of the mask are distinctly rounder and less flame-like, which matches up well with the softer, almost fluffy-looking edges of Draconimom's skirt. The netting on the mask could then, logically, represent the fabric of the cape/skirt as though they're being dramatically flared out.
(Off-topic, but: if you look closely at the lace cape, you'll see roses worked into the design! This isn't part of the analysis, I just think it's neat owo)
4. Just under the mask's central 4-pointed star, there are 2 small extrusions on each side. These bear an uncanny resemblance to the 2 main lines used in the flow of the embellishments on Draconimom's bodice(?), with the upper one curling upwards while the lower one is just slightly curved.
5. I cannot stress this enough. I'm putting this in image format just so you can see how much I'm not joking. The central line of the mask is not just repeatedly utilized in Draconimom's outfit, it's literally integral to her overall character design. (It's a little hard to see due to her default pose unfortunately, as it interrupts the linear flow)
Tumblr media
tl;dr get in losers we're getting hornton's mom out of that mirror

I have to wonder, but I don’t think the game is over after we defeat Malleus. Many suspect us as Yuu will be the next overblot which I do not doubt. But what if it’s either the dark mirror or Crowley himself?
For example, Crowley never tried to stop the overblots meaning he must have some bad motive behind it. Not to mention the dark mirror?
Take a look at this
Tumblr media
The dark mirror has Maleficent’s insignia in between his eyes as you can see the horns.
What if the dark mirror is Malleona’s soul trapped inside the mirror like others are suspecting? Since Malleona is the descendant of evil aka Maleficent. It’s possibly that Crowley does remember Malleona but is playing the dumb bird that he is. What if Crowley plans to resurrect Malleona and that he is the next to overblot when we stop him! Crowley might also be using those who overblot as a human sacrifice. Human sacrifice are known to resurrect the dead in many horror films. So it’s possibly Crowley intentionally made the 7 to overblot to resurrect Malleona. In the first overblot, he didnt really look like wanted to save Riddle the first time.
If he is trying to sacrifice people, then that means he would even kill his own son if he is related to Malleus. Remember when Idia mentioned in chapter6 that he wondered if someone is intentionally making these overblot happening?
Malleona may have known of his plan. Therefore created Grim as Grim wanted to get inside the college but never knew why! Remember, Grim is an unknown monster species. Most likely he was created by magic! Plus if she is the dark mirror? She must’ve brought Yuu to stop Crowley’s plan all together with Grim. To her, Yuu is the key to stop the overblots and to get Grim to destroy Crowley’s plan.
Since Yuu was the one who took Grim in. This further makes Malleona’s plan to stop Crowley. Malleona most likely doesn’t want to be resurrected as to reason why she brought Yuu and Grim.
If what I’m thinking is correct? Crowley is a dead man!

Expanse s5 spoilers
Something I really didn't appreciate enough on my first watch is that Cyn is Naomi's dark mirror. Both Cyn and Naomi are the ideal prey for a narcissist like Marco; they are genuinely kind and empathetic and constantly giving to others. For a time, both were taken advantage of by Marco for his own ends.
But the difference between these two characters is that Cyn is much better at lying to himself and rationalizing his evil actions, and Naomi wasn't capable of the same after the Augustin Gemara. Naomi has the moral courage Cyn lacks, and he is who she would have needed to be had she stayed with Marco.
The airlock is a symbol of abandonment, of the necessity of leaving behind something precious to save Naomi's soul. Cyn and Naomi's relationship in season 5 circles around the airlock. Cyn had bore witness to Naomi's previous suicide attempt, and admits that he helped kidnap Philip in a desperate bid to get Naomi to stay, and has to live with the guilt of her disappearance and suffering. Naomi chooses to leave, and live with the guilt of abandoning her son.
When Marco declares his plan to trap the Chetzmoka, Naomi knows she must go to the airlock once more, and Cyn is again desperate to make her stay; so he tries to stop her in the airlock, putting himself on the line, pleading with her. Naomi has to kill her dark mirror in order to leave for the final time, to abandon her son once more as Philip looks on. It's symbolic that Naomi floats free, pushing off into space as Cyn's feet remain planted on the ground, rooted by moral cowardice.

Okay, so... I felt like drawing the hand in the mirror and making an ink drawing for practice.....
Tumblr media
I think it turned out alright, but I'm not sharing it merely to share it. I noticed something while drawing it.
I've seen some speculation in the fandom as to whose hand it is being displayed in the mirror. Now I will concede that I may be wrong on this, but it really does just look like Crowleys hand.
Tumblr media
Oh wait, my apologies. Allow me to illuminate this object.
Tumblr media
That, to me at least, looks like the cuff of a dress shirt, the cuff of his jacket sleeve, were he to ever put his arms through the sleeves, and an ungloved hand.... (and minus his fake "claws")

Just the Dark Mirror AU where Takua and Vakama are together and Vakama is both very young(less than 500 years old) and very traumatized due to his visions and seeing just how far Tuyet will to make Matoran fall in line
Takua, having lost his friendship with Jaller, looks after Vakama because not only does he have visions, but he's also just not good at moving hiding spots. Even when Jaller asks Takua to just hand Vakama over to Tuyet, Takua feigns ignorance and refuses
A bit of a cross-over/fun image: Imagine the two walking somewhere, hand-in-hand, and Vakama, being the Bionicle-verse version of a child, keps his hand over his eyes and sings a song from Ta-Metru as he and Takua walk to who knows where. It's quiet enough for no one to catch them, but loud enough that Vakama can hear himself sing. Maybe after Takua’s capture, Vakama IS left on his own, and he walks through deserted streets, hands over his eyes, and quietly singing to himself, but ensuring he's not caught by having it be some kind of "Honor to the Toa" type song
That is until he runs into Pohatu, who's admittedly surprised to hear singing nowadays and surprised to see Vakama himself, who's still younger than 500 years old
Knowing he's alone and he's a sitting duck, Pohatu leads Vakama to where the Resistance is chilling out, where he eventually reunites with Takua and where Takanuva sees the Turaga of his universe still as a Matoran, but barely even a tool-maker yet so broken, and the skeptical look he keeps giving Takanuva does not make him feel better

Are you thinking about rivaling DM leopardstar's fate with what will happen to Fireboy, cause something proactive and a foxtrap doesn't sound pleasant.
Nah, it's less horrific than what happened to her, helps that he has less lives at that point too. Less dm!leopardstar and more canon!hawkfrost

Ms. Duane, I just wanted to tell you that Dark Mirror is my favorite book ever and you are such an inspiration to me. :D
I'm glad! Thanks for the nice words. :)
...It was one of those books, though, that it was a relief to finish writing. Not because it was particularly difficult (...well, parts of it brought with them specific difficulties) but because it was wearing.
It's easy to write evil. Too damn easy. The Mirror-universe inversion of bad-for-good feels like fun, to start with: an enjoyable dabbling in wickedness. You sit the characters down and ask them, "Where would you go wrong, and how would you go wrong, if you went that way?" And then you get down in that and wallow... because, like almost all of us, in their personal stories they're all the Good Guys, and there's no reason not to.
But the longer one does this kind of writing (or so I found), the more troubling it can become as it goes along. This is because all characters, whether of your own invention or other people's, turn to some degree into self-inserts when you're writing them. It's impossible for them not to. You are in their heads, listening, feeling what they're feeling, writing the words in their mouths. But that also means that, inside the larger, more inclusive creative space you build inside you for the writing of a novel, they are in yours. And some of the things you find out about yourself, when you have to hold that particular space in place for days and weeks on end, can be disturbing.
C. S. Lewis notes something of this kind in his foreword to The Screwtape Letters, when he briefly discusses his process while writing that book: about how easy it is to be wicked on the page, and the price you pay for it. "It exploits itself spontaneously," he says: "...it would run away with you for a thousand pages if you gave it its head. But though it was easy to twist one's mind into the diabolical attitude, it was not fun... or not for long. The strain produced a sort of spiritual cramp."
(sigh) He got that right. ...But anyway: it was also, despite the strain, a good book to have written. I'm glad you liked it.

quick guide to the differences when summoning in TWST
This post is definitely not comprehensive lmao, I'm sure someone has figured out the exact correlation between the feathers/Dark Mirror lines by now.
If you have any info not shown here, feel free to add on!
Grim
The initial cutscene showing the outside of NRC will not change UNLESS you are about to summon a SSR card, upon which there's a very, very small chance Grim will show up.
Grim will always show up at an obligatory SSR card summon (100th summon). Not sure if he shows up at an obligatory event SSR card summon (200th summon), but he probably does?
Tumblr media
^pic of the lad for reference
Feathers
At least one feather will fall past the screen right before the Dark Mirror appears. From what I've seen, they seem to correlate to the overall rarity of a summon.
Single feather
Single summon: R card
x10 summon: 9 R cards and 1 obligatory SR card
NOTE: Seemingly will not appear during a x10 summon if the result includes either: at least 2 SR cards, or at least 1 SSR card
Two feathers
Single summon: SR or SSR card
x10 summon: At least 1 SR or SSR card (aside from the obligatory SR or SSR card)
NOTE: Seemingly will always appear during a x10 summon so long as the result includes either: at least 2 SR cards, or at least 1 SSR card
Dark Mirror
The Dark Mirror will have different scenes depending on the rarity of the summon.
"You, whose image the Dark Mirror did beckon forth…"
ONLY green sparkles in the background
Single summon: R card
x10 summon: 9 R cards and 1 obligatory SR card
NOTE 1: This sequence can play during a x10 summon if the result includes multiple SR cards but no SSR cards (two feathers will fall past the screen beforehand)
NOTE 2: This sequence seemingly will not play for a x10 summon if the result includes any SSR cards
"Reveal unto me the nature of your soul!"
Green and purple sparkles in the background
Single summon: SR card
x10 summons: At least 1 SR card (in addition to the obligatory SR or SSR card)
NOTE 1: This sequence will only play during a x10 summon if the result includes more than the obligatory SR card
NOTE 2: During a x10 summon, there is a nonzero (but rare) chance of summoning a SSR card despite getting this sequence
"Bearer of dark powers, I call thee forth!"
Green, purple, yellow, and red sparkles in the background
Single summon: SSR card time baybeeeee
x10 summon: At least 1 SSR card
NOTE 1: You will always get this sequence during an obligatory SSR card summon
NOTE 2: As you can probably guess, you will always get this sequence if Grim appears during the previous cutscene
NOTE 3: This sequence seems to be guaranteed during a x10 summon IF the result includes at least 2 SSR cards
Other details of note:
During the coffin unlocking scene, purple & green sparkles will appear around the keyhole if the summon is a SR or SSR card. R cards will only have pale yellow sparkles.
A SSR summon will have a lavishly-decorated coffin. R & SR summons have almost no decorations on their coffins.
Like during the Dark Mirror sequences, the sparkles behind each coffin will change according to the rarity of the summon. Green sparkles mean a R card, green/purple sparkles mean a SR card, and green/purple/red/yellow sparkles mean a SSR card.

…I might be saying something obvious but you know how in anime there’s sometimes a rival school full of assholes that the main characters have to compete with? Is NRC that school? It is a school that teaches the values of villains. Like, if I had to pick the main characters’ school from either Night Raven College or Royal Sword Academy…I think I’d pick RSA? Night Raven College sounds like the school for the evil mages that wear cloaks to hide their faces and do dark magic, you know? …wait, the ceremonial robes??? Also it’s always Savanaclaw boys trying to start shit lmao
