personally, i found it very attractive: l. hughes
blurb: in which an interview with the devils' upcoming rookie takes the intern by suprise. / word count: 1.5k / pairing: luke hughes x fem!reader
To be fair, all that I wanted to do was leave the Prudential Center, go home, and take a long bath. The game between the New Jersey Devils and the New York Rangers had gone into overtime, and as much as I loved my job, it truly had been a long day.
Flashing my lanyard at the security guard standing outside of the Devils' locker room, I was ushered into the room, joining the growing cohort of other journalists; writers who had made their entire career off of reporting on the comings-and-goings in the sports world. Now that the team had been solidified with major additions, and taken players off of their Injury Report roster, the Devils had put up a good fight against their Hudson River rivals.
Grabbing my phone and opening voice notes, I made a beeline for the one player that I needed to cover— Luke Hughes, one of the newest additions to the Devils, and a hell of a defenseman that I needed to talk to on his play earlier on the ice. And, thanks to the work I had put in weeks before trying to get this same interview, I had the opportunity to actually talk to him, instead of having to wait around in a circle while other journalists droned on (and asked) practically the same questions over and over again.
I had fallen in love with sports journalism because of this— because of the opportunity to speak with the players who have it their all on that ice, and who had a true passion for the game they played.
I once again flashed my I.D. to one of the team's publicists, Sharyl, and she smiled over at me— shaking my hand and calling over Luke.
"Hi Y/N! How are you holding up over this season?" she asked as we stood in our corner, both angled to see the player coming towards us.
"Hi Sharyl, I'm doing well! Just finished up my third-year, and I just need this last interview to finish up the project I've been working on these past few weeks," I told her. It was true— I had been working on this player profile for the past few weeks, and currently, this single nineteen-year-old rookie was the only person left on my list before I could publish the article that I was hoping would help my career.
"Oh that sounds so good, sweetheart! I know just how many hours you've been putting in here, and I'm so excited to read!" the older lady said.
"Here's Luke now!" she said, saying hello to the defenseman, and then turning back to me.
"Luke, this is Y/N, the reporter I mentioned from ESPN's journalism internship cohort. She's just going to go over a few things with you, and finish up her profile," she told the curly-haired boy.
"Hi, Luke, I'm Y/N, it's nice to meet you!" I spoke up, putting my hand out for him to shake.
It seemed to take him a few moments to catch up with me; and, to be fair, that was to be expected. I was his age, and from the way Sharyl was speaking about me, you'd expect me to be much older, or even a man. When I had begun working for ESPN's College Internship program, I had started with baseball as my main coverage sport— slowly growing from that to hockey as the seasons changed, and then, finally, landing on the Devils as my main beat at the beginning of the season. With all that, however, I knew the way people looked at me— questioning as to why an eighteen year old college student was interviewing men in sports that others thought I didn't even know existed, or even know how they worked. So, his reaction was expected.
The six-two boy in front of me seemed to be struck out of whatever stupor he was in, however, and shook my hand back.
"Hi, Y/N, it's nice to meet you. Sharyl said you'd be stopping by," he said. He was quiet, and I could tell how much of a toll the game had on him— despite being freshly showered, he sported his signature smirk— looking down at me as the cheers and celebrations kept it up behind him.
"Yeah! I just have a few questions to ask, but do you want to follow me out to the media office? It shouldn't take too long, especially since I'm sure you want to go celebrate your win tonight," I told him.
Not really looking for a response, I looked over the boy— he was, admittedly, cute. His eyes were full of life— and he filled out his after-game clothing well. That, and the coupling of beauty marks over his face just enhanced how handsome he was. God, get it together, I told myself. You're on the job!
Finding ourselves in one of the various media offices hosted in the Prudential Center's basement, I sat down across from the rookie, and waited until we were both situated to start the interview.
“So, thank you for sitting down with me! It was a long game out there, but you’re really pushing through,” I laughed, trying to ease the tension I could feel on my end. I really didn’t want to make a fool of myself in front of this very cute boy, and even less knowing that he was a professional player in the sport I covered heavily.
“No— no it’s all okay, no worries,” he said, “I’d rather be here than listening to Shmido trying to recap the entirety of the second-half,” he laughed.
“Well, you’re the first to say that,” I smiled back. “So, now that you’re on your second official NHL game, I kind of have to point out— you went from playing for Michigan, and then skating for the league in just a few weeks, and you admittedly have had a huge transformation—” I started.
“Yeah I got faster,” he laughed, his cheeks tinging a shade of pink, and I couldn’t really lie to myself and blame it on his earlier celebrations. “Don’t worry, you can say it— Jacky has.”
“Well, I’ll be honest, it’s really been great to watch. I couldn’t take my eyes off of you the entire game,” I said, and then admittedly felt my own cheeks flush, because truly, what was I thinking? Was I openly flirting with a guy I was supposed to be interviewing? Before I could feel myself blush even further, or even make the situation even more awkward, the silence was broken with Luke’s laugh— a stark and loud chuckle that made me look up automatically. His blush had now traveled from his cheeks to the tip of his hair, peeking out of his wet curls.
He ran his hand through his hair, “Well I mean, that’s definitely great to hear— are you serious?” he said, and for the life of me, I couldn’t tell if he was joking— if he was making fun of my obvious lack of flirting ability, or egging me on.
“Very,” I said. “It was a great game, and the goal you made in OT was just so smooth! Personally, I found it very attractive” I said; I had spent the entirety of the game looking at Luke skating— the smooth and strategic moves he made on the ice, passing the puck back and forth as if he was moving in water. He was beautiful on the ice— weaving between the opposing team’s players quicker and way more efficiently to the point where they couldn’t even keep up with him.
“And I have to point out the pass you made to Jack in the second-half and the assist you sent to Nico! I haven’t seen a lot of puck work that really resembled that in such a while, and—” I cut myself off, trying not to let myself ramble any farther in front of the boy I could feel myself crushing on.
“I mean that’s really a high compliment, thank you,” he said. “I mean, I know this might not be entirely appropriate for the interview, but I’m free after this, if you are two?” he asked. This had to be some kind of cliche, I thought, not really thinking that he had just asked me out.
I did, however, hope he wasn’t egging me on— and, besides, after this profile came out, I wouldn't be covering the NJ Devils until next season, so why not? Why not spend an afternoon with a hot hockey player who I had already called cute?  “You know what? I am also free, and I was going to get dinner, if you wanted to join me,” I responded, hoping the youngest Hughes would take me up on the offer too. “I also don’t have class tomorrow, so yes, I am very free after this,” I laughed.
The boy in front of me smiled up, pushing the curls falling in his face back, and saying a quick “Well, then let’s get this thing started.”

all of your inuokko art is so lovely it’s hard to pick just one!! i loved the ex-idol concept that was so perfect for inumaki, and the baseball and college aus are adorable too! we love mutual pining in this house 🥰
i just looked a the date in which this was sent and shrieked out loud 😭 i am so sorry and also happy new year!
thank you so much for your kind words ❤️ i'm so happy to hear you liked the ex-idol toge and baseball player yuta au hehe that was so much fun to do. now that you mention college aus (which i also LIVEEE for), would it not be cute if they used to crush on each other when they were college students!! music major toge was part of the dance club and spent a lot of time on campus for practice, same for yuta who had been a prodigy baseball player his whole life. from his club's practice spot, toge had a convenient view of watching yuta practice (as did many other students haha, man always had an audience). from observation and also through word of mouth, he knew that yuta was a very sweet person, friend and teammate. he took care of his team well and everyone looked up to him. toge was inspired by his drive and it motivated him to try his best too.
for yuta it was a much more private experience. while toge would sometimes just join the crowd watching yuta or sit somewhere alone on a day with less people, yuta was intensely shy. he came across his school's dance club profile on social media one fine day and that's when he first saw toge. 30 minutes of doom scrolling later on their page and it was over for him...let's just say toge was a really good dancer with lots of charm and personality in his style (and also has a little fanclub of his own!).
despite them mutually pining for one another from afar, they unfortunately only ever interacted once. they happened to both be on their way out of school, and it was the day before yuta and his team went off to the all japan university baseball championship. toge's got a good luck charm for him but is way too nervous to actually approach him. luckily for toge, yuta accidentally drops his student ID. and the little opportunist within toge comes alive and dives to grab it before yuta can even do it himself (he still cringes about this moment years later). yuta's brain is also doing an internal system crash but somehow doesn't combust when toge very calmly hands him his ID back with the charm underneath. he then walks off in what seems to be the fastest speed yuta has ever witnessed. after the moment is over, yuta uncovers the good luck charm tucked under his ID and then, he combusts.
it doesn't get better yet, they don't meet again for a long time. yuta and his team go on to win the championship, but when he returns to campus with all the glory and confidence in the world (to finally speak to toge), he can't find him anywhere. tldr: toge got scouted by a really good music label and got whisked away to trainee life at 19 in the period of time yuta was away for championships; it all happened very quickly bc toge was quite naive and dropped out of school for a shot at his dream career) (why do i feel like im writing a such a cliche romance plot !! haha)
we'll get to the bad parts immediately. toge knew trainee life would be hard, but he was willing to give it his all to debut. except things didn't really improve after debut. before he could even notice all the red flags, it all came crashing down at 23 when toge had been overworked to the point of damaging his vocal cords. he left the group shortly after, and eventually left the label all together. as for yuta, he was scouted to play for a foreign team and left japan. his career was a success overseas and he'd attained the status as japan's pride. all the things he'd dreamt of as a kid playing baseball with his dad had come true. but in true yuta nature, he was like, yknow what, i think i've done it all and i really miss my friends and family. so i'm gonna move my life back to japan! bye bye! (not gonna give him the successful athlete sustains career damaging injury plot no yuta closed the curtains with his own hands simply bc he missed his friends) i think at this point (age 25) he's only thought of toge from time to time as this sweet boy from his college days that was out of his league, he hasn't heard or seen him in forever either. that is until he returns to japan, gets like a million brand deals, collaboration offers and of course, invites to events and parties for the elites and celebs of japan.
a few weeks after he returned to tokyo, he's invited to a private party to celebrate team japan's success at the winter olympics, with his best friend rika as his plus one. he meets a lot of big name athletes there and quickly becomes friends with maki zenin, one of japan's best speed skaters, and yuji itadori, one of players of the national ice hockey team. (geez i wonder who maki's plus one is)
when he feels himself go past tipsy and approaching drunk, he excuses himself to the balcony for a breather. he's known to be extremely talkative after too much alcohol and he doesn't really feel like pissing off his new friends. when he steps out, he sees a single person smoking by themselves outside and cringes internally (he hates the smell!). but he finds that he won't be stepping back inside so soon, because somehow, he's met with the very beautiful face of inumaki toge.
yuta covers his mouth with his hands at the same time toge drops his cigarette.

So, fanfic ideas.... If JJK and BNHA characters were in No Power world, what would their job be if not become Jujutsu Sorcerer or Hero (in your opinion)? Why? Please pick your top 5 fav characters from each...
Ooooh la la, another fun one. High key, I love this question. If you end up writing anything, I'd love for you to PM me so I can read it (you can also share anonymously, whatever's clever)! Thanks for the ask, let me know your thoughts below 👇🏾
Tumblr media
This is literally me perking up any time I get a new ask. 🥰
JUJUTSU KAISEN AU
Quite literally, all of these characters would be alive and thriving anywhere else.
Nobara Kugisaki - IG Model, easy. After not getting scouted in Tokyo like she'd always imagined, she decides to do it her mf'ing self. Her results... are lackluster. At first. But as frustration wins, she inadvertently starts letting the real her shine through (complete with bouts of scathing badassery during a live complaining about her lack of fame). People begin to find her incredibly relatable and she becomes like the Jennifer Lawrence of influencers. Never once do her travels take her close to Shibuya station.
Why: That "I-Know-I'm-The-Shit-Even-If-You-Don't" attitude has nothing to do with jujutsu. Nobara has an unwavering confidence and is delulu enough to make it happen, whatever It is for her.
Yuji Itadori - As a card carrying member of the occult club in high school, Yuji starts considering his prospects for higher education (Sasaki and Iguchi will continue to need someone to hide behind as they investigate the "supernatural"). Subsequently, he finally gives into coach's insistence to join a sports team provided it doesn't take time away from his club commitments and, of course, goes All Star in whatever sport he decides to take on. Subsequently, he gets a full ride + stipends to attend university as a college baseball player after chasing his passing interest in going to the "Summer Koshien". He happens to follow Kugisaki on Insta.
Why: Yuji's need to be needed would, in part, guide his steps. I think he'd want to be something cinema related, like a reviewer! But he'd always want to coddle the cowering forms of his peers even if they weren't particularly close. Sports is a means to an end, maybe he'll study cinematography or film theory in uni! But ultimately, he's still a kid who wants to help people.
Megumi Fushiguro - Sweet baby Megs has always had a penchant with animals. They find their way to him at parties, otherwise well behaved dogs pull against their leash to flock to him... even wild animals tend to be way too comfortable getting close. This charm he has over animals amuses him though he'd never admit it aloud (he's still just as sullen as ever). Subsequently, while he doesn't need the money, he helps out as a veterinarian technician while in high school and volunteers to walk dogs at the local humane society. He doesn't have social media but he occasionally gets posted with the animals on their SM pages when they have adoption events (which tend to be really well attended afterwards). He's posted exactly one video to YouTube to an account with no profile picture that urges idiots to stop giving baseballs to dogs and leaving them unattended as aggressive chewers may end up ingesting the innards which cause obstructions in their intestines. Yuji was the idiot in question that prompted the post. He did see the video.
Why: Megumi is gentle but more specifically to life forms that deserve it. I still think he'd break the face of anyone who breaks the golden rule of "don't hurt me [or anyone I love] and I won't hurt you [or anyone you love]" but that soft spot for vulnerable beings is still there.
Nanami Kento - Nanami Kento is still a salaryman but, without the outlet that being a sorcerer allowed him when he felt dispirited, he's forced to white knuckle it like the rest of us. That is, until he finds a cause that he can dedicate some of his time to. It starts when Haibara joins a community outreach program wherein he encourages Nanami to be a volunteer mentor. It starts out rather stiffly but, eventually, things kind of click together for him. He realizes the kid he's mentoring isn't a total delinquent and the kid realizes he's not being infantilized when Nanami just cares for his wellbeing. With this understanding, Nanami really feels like his impact is meaningful and he commits to taking on more responsibilities within the program both in a leadership role and in taking on more mentees. Ino was his first mentee, Yuji was his second (mandatory after being caught underage in a pachinko casino). He couldn't get rid of either of them after the fact.
Why: Nanami isn't so bored with being an office worker that jujutsu is the only alternative. He just wants to feel like his incredibly valuable time makes a difference. He needs a cause and Papamin deserves someone to look after (quite to his dismay).
Satoru Gojo - Satoru Gojo wants for not in any universe. Subsequently, he is just an eccentric rich guy who, in a very intentionally Jay Gatsby manner, frequently throws extremely lavish parties that are the talk of the town. They are as garrish as he is outlandish but men and women flock to them for a chance at getting a peak at the Gojo clan heir. In his youth, he'd gone to a small, private religious high school and still sends individual invitations to each of his old schoolmates with the hope that one of them in particular will come. Shoko attends every party with Utahime begrudgingly at her side. Nanami curtly replies with a written "decline" to every single invitation though Haibara is sometimes able to drag him out. Geto attends occasionally but he is quite blissfully unaware that these opulent parties are solely meant to captivate his attention. He's under the impression that whatever they had in high school is long gone. Nobara has, on occasion, tried to crash these parties but security usually bounces her because she's underage.
Why: In every universe, in every life, Satoru Gojo is a simp. Especially for the lone person he considers to be his equal. For all his money, for all his power, he is always left wanting [Suguru Geto].
My Hero Academia AU
Honestly, this gave me more of a hard time. Like, the kids are the same age as JJK but, they just seem... like kids. I can't tell if it's the depth of JJK's character development or their semi-obvious cursed techniques as they relates to employment but here's what I came up with.
Katsuki Bakugo - Katsuki Bakugo is effortlessly good at a lot of things in and out of the MHA universe. While he has a keen intellect fit for many professions, I think his obsessive-bordering-on-psychopathic dedication to be the strongest, the best is reminiscent of a dude bro bullying you into buying whey protein and lifting more. He would for sure be a personal trainer who would, begrudgingly, have a social media presence where he commodifies his otherwise flippant attitude and "beats people into being a less shitty version of themselves". He would also have a private, no face cooking account on tik tok for his curated but delicious meal planning. Midoriya, unknowingly, follows both online personalities. This does not escape Bakugo’s attention.
Why: Don't get me wrong, kid is will one day be the CEO of whatever company he wants (a lot of CEO's are also psychopathic) but, considering his age and current hobbies, he was born to call his followers extras while condescending to them about a proper workout and nutrition plan.
Izuku Midoriya - Izuku and his penchant for hyper informed rants about his special interest would see surprising success as a tiktoker. Bullies would always find something to pick on him for whether that be his absent dad, his socioeconomic background, his pitiful disposition… but even they’d be clued into and following along for his long form verbal essays on pop culture (only thing I could think of in lieu of hero culture, maybe sports would be better?). He’d cultivate a community of adoring fans turned friends and collaborate with other similarly obsessed fanatics. Bakugo would be hyperaware of his channel but act really passive when any of their old middle school classmates bring it up to talk about it.
Why: I feel like tiktok is absolutely the perfect environment where people can connect over their interests and, as an aficionado in whatever seems apropos for the AU, Midoriya’s innate charm over others would shine through and garner a following. Especially because we know he knows what he’s talking about. I’d be tuned in.
Shoto Todoroki - if Enji is still in the mix, he’s likely still going to be waging war against his own weakness (in whatever capacity) and, subsequently will be both insanely successful by other peoples’ standards and still incredibly toxic toward his children in this mission. Shoto will still bear the brunt of it but will temper it with willful rebellion. Oh, you want Shoto to take over the family investment portfolio? It’ll cost you. He will be somewhat mindful of his actions so people aren’t losing their livelihoods but he will be sinking tons of Enji’s personal money into stocks or company’s with unfavorable odds. A family owned cement company that was about to go under, paying to keep a radio station operable 24/7 with semi-hourly disparaging blind items about Enji Todoroki.. these are just a few of his dalliances. Shoto is an undercover day trader using his fathers slush fund as capital. He was absolutely a big part of what saved GameStop’s stock inexplicably. Turned him a pretty profit but he refuses to give Enji the satisfaction of knowing that he may have been right in steering him to stocks in the first place. Midoriya absolutely talked at length about the phenomenon that rejuvenated his favorite game store from his youth he used to frequent with an unnamed childhood friend. Bakugo saw the segment and, while secretly giddy, did not reach out. Did thank whatever invisible hand drove the nerd to mention it though.
Why: His nepo baby status will get him in to places where he actually wants to be, career wise, but Enji is still stonewalling him into his idea of Shoto’s life. Further, he would never want his unique legacy to be tainted with whatever grace his father’s name gives him. He has time and the means to figure out what he wants to do though. And access to so much therapy.
Shouta Aizawa - I honestly cannot see Aizawa as anything not expressly kid related. The care he has when he gets on their eye level to talk to them is top tier. TBH he rounds out the trifecta of mentors who unilaterally put kids above themselves with Nanami and, arguably, Gojo. If not a teacher, I’d say a loose cannon social worker. Earnestly, this man is willing to be in the shit of it if only to spare children who lack guidance, resources, proper decision making skills, etc. as a UA teacher. He wouldn’t be of the “quick to expel and dash dreams” type of loose cannon that his teacher persona allows. He’d be more like a Benson from Law & Order SVU type loose cannon where he’s probably bending some protocols to be a bit more domineering than he needs to be so adults know that any vulnerable kids under his charge are cared for because he’s super invested in his work and their wellbeing. Plus, the man can be a little deranged so he’s not afraid to make his subtle point more clear ✨ for people who don’t appear to be getting the message when it comes to his young stewards.
Why: If there is a society that unjustly does not protect children, then Shouta Aizawa will. I think my hope is that Shirakumo Oboro isn't a lesson in every universe.
Toshinori Yagi - This man is a politician. He runs on idyllic principles which are infectious across every demographic. He appears earnest and forthright and truly got into it for all the right reasons but the reality of politics is very different from the idea of them. He still thrives but feels more and more like he's failing his constituents, losing out to other politicians who are more corrupt, who curry favor from less than savory organizations to sway policies in their favor. He's disheartened but still believes in a future with peace and looks to the youth, his biggest support base, to take steps toward progress together which includes bolstering social programs. Aizawa thinks he's a bit of a sham until money starts hitting the programs that matter. Midoriya talks about Yagi's bold commitment to partnering with the youth on his channel frequently.
Why: It was this or a Gilderoy Lockhart-esque facade for a self-help book author. I see both as equally plausible. Selling a dream while falling apart internally? Same.

Post-it
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Reader
Word Count: 3.3k
Warnings: just fluff.
A/N: This is a college AU was inspired by a random picture I saw of people using post it notes to write messages in windows to other people in a different building. enjoy!!

Masterlist
The rumor spread like wildfire, Bucky Barnes was back on campus after being gone for almost a year and a half. Normally if a student left halfway through the school year no one would care or notice. But this wasn’t just any student. Bucky was the star player on the football team and the life of the party. So his absence was noticeable even to you. You didn’t know him personally or were in the same social circle but you had been at a few parties at the same time. It was hard to miss the dazzling smile, sparkling eyes and his flirtatious nature. So when the news broke out that he had been in an accident everyone was shocked. Once the news that he had lost his arm it’s all anyone could talk about.
Now so many people were waiting to catch a glimpse of him. You saw him first at the coffee shop early in the morning. Bucky had on a baseball hat, most likely to keep a low profile. He grabbed his coffee and turned towards the door, your eyes met briefly and you smiled at him as he passed. By the time you got to your first class of the day, a lot of people were talking about him. How much he had changed, how he was quiet and reserved, kept to himself. Some talked about his prosthetic arm, others wanted to know what the scars looked like. Their morbid fascination annoyed you to no end. But with your day full of classes you couldn’t really take time to dwell on it and you headed towards your last class of the day.
Rushing through the building to get to your English literature class before all of the seats were taken. You made it just in time, opening the door before the professor showed up. With a quick scan of the room you found the last few open chairs at the front and sat down. As you took out your notebook, pens and highlighters you felt someone sit beside you and you glance up quickly. Finding none other than Bucky sitting beside you. He still had on a baseball hat, low enough so that no one could see him. His eyes were glued to the desk and his own notebook in his hand and that’s when you noticed the gloves. It wasn’t cold enough out for gloves and it made you curious as to why he was wearing them.
The class went by quickly, professor Coulson went over the syllabus and assigned the first paper of the semester. However most of the class you spent looking over at Bucky out of the corner of your eye. It seemed like he was trying to make himself look invisible and as soon as the class was dismissed he was the first one out. You wouldn’t see him for the rest of the week.
Tumblr media
The only interaction you had with Bucky was in your English class. You had made it early enough to get good seats toward the back and you saved him one. As he walked in he scanned the room only finding the same front desks available until you waved at him and pointed down. He moved quickly and sat down beside you, giving you a small smile and a thank you. After that day you would save a seat for each other, neither of you talked a lot, just the occasional hello or goodbye. Once in a while you’ll find some type of muffin or granola bar on your desk and you turn to look at him and he gives you a little nod. Before you knew it the semester was half way through. The last paper had been submitted the night before and you finally have a Saturday all to yourself.
Unfortunately the storm that rolled in made it impossible to go out without getting soaked. So you sat in your dorm absolutely bored. You had cleaned, read for a while and now you sat on your bed looking out the window of your room, the room that was higher up in the building. Your building was right across from another that held dorm rooms with a quad separating them. Most of the curtains were closed but then movement one floor up caught your eyes and that’s when you saw him, Bucky. Moving around his room and then he looked out, just watching the rain pour. His eyes move around until they get lower and lock with yours. You avert your eyes quickly, embarrassed you got caught. Although it’s not like you were stalking him or anything. Taking a chance you glance back up to see him still at the window with an amused smile on his lips. It’s the first time you had seen him smile since he was back, so you wave at him and he waves back. Then you get an idea.
You move off of your bed and head to your desk and start looking around the drawers until you find what you want and you move back to the window kneeling on your bed. Noticing that Bucky is still at his window you start to pull the post it notes off of the block you had and place them on the window.
HI
Once you were done you peeked around your message to see him move further into his room and out of sight. Maybe you took it a step too far and you started removing the notes so that you could close the window and die from embarrassment, you just hoped no one else saw you. Just as you peel the last post-its and you reach up to pull the curtain closed you see him at his window again and you smile. His message is a reflection of yours.
HI
You start to place more post-its on the window.
What’s up?
Bored…
Movie night?
When?
7 pm
Popcorn?
You look at his last message and get off the bed and search through your stash of snacks and don’t find any so you head back to the window.
None left.
Bucky starts to place post-its on the window again.
 I’ll bring snacks.
You see him look around his message and you give him a thumbs up. He smiles and disappears from the window. Grabbing your phone you check the time, almost 7:00. The room was already clean but you decided to grab an extra blanket and set up your mini projector to face the blank wall at the end of your bed and connect the cables to your laptop. As you finish setting up your bed so that it would be more comfortable for both of you there is a knock on your door. Bucky stands in the hallway, the water slipping from his raincoat and leaving little puddles on the floor. His arms are full of bags from the convenience store down the block.
“I counted the windows wrong and went to the wrong room, twice.” He says with a smile.
“Maybe I should have put my room number on the window.” You chuckle before moving out of the way. “Come on in. You can put the bags on the desk.”
He moves from the door to your desk placing the bags down before he turns to you. “Where can I leave this?” He says as he removes the raincoat.
“You can hang it in the shower.”
He moves towards the door you point him to as you grab the bags and start pulling out the things he bought. There’s popcorn and different bags of candy along with some paper plates.
“I got us each two slices from the pizza place at the end of the block. I hope that’s ok.”
“Thank you, they’re my favorite.” You smile at him before he turns his attention to the rest of your room. It was cozy and inviting and so very you.
Bucky shouldn’t be surprised by it, since coming back to campus he’s felt like all anyone did was talk about him except for you. You had been kind and didn’t expect anything from him, no one other than Sam and Steve had been that gracious.
“So what do you want to watch?”
“I don’t know, how about the host picks?”
“Disney movie it is.”

You had watched some movies but you also got to know each other better. You told him about moving up to college from a small town. He offered to show you some of his favorite places. Conversation was easy with him, Bucky even told you about the accident, and answered any question you had. He hesitated when you asked if you could hold his left hand but then did it anyway. You weren’t afraid of it or him. Although he did warn that he was still adapting to it so controlling it was sometimes an issue.
After that night you and Bucky were practically joined at the hip. He would wait for you at the entrance to your building on mornings when you both had class and walked with you to get coffee. If your free time in between classes lined up, you would meet up and hang out. Your Wednesday classes were your favorite, it had become a race to see who would get there and get the best seats. He always won. But you were better at the post-it window art that you both had started to do just to cheer each other up.
“Why are you staring out the window?” Steve asks from his place at Bucky’s desk.
“None of your business punk.”
“Are you waiting for post-it girl?” This time it’s Sam asking as he walks closer to the window in hopes to get a glimpse of the mystery girl Bucky has been talking about nonstop.
“Oh, that’s right, I can’t believe I forgot about her. Which one is her window?”
“I’m not telling either of you.” Bucky informs them as he closes the blinds just in case you decide to write something. For the first time since he got back to campus Bucky had been excited, at first he was worried about how everyone was going to react to him. It was just about how he expected, he could feel eyes on him all the time. Everyone wanted to see his arm and he was very self conscious about it. But you had been kind and treated him the way he wanted to be treated and then you asked him over for movie night, by then he was smitten.
“You know you should come to the party tonight and invite her.”
“I don’t think she likes parties, Sam.”
“How can you know if you don’t ask her?”
Sam was right and although he wasn’t sure if he really wanted to go, if you went, he’d at least stay for an hour or so. He turns back to the window and pulls the blinds away just in time to see you place the last small square piece of paper on your window.
HI.
Party?
When?
10.
Ok.
His phone vibrated in his back pocket which he grabbed immediately to see a message from you. He frowned when he saw your message.
Y/n: Can I bring a friend?
Bucky: Of course, did you want to meet downstairs? We can go together.
Y/N: Perfect, is it ok if my friend goes with us?
Bucky: Yeah, no problem. See you then.
His heart sank a little at the thought of you bringing a date. Of course someone as kind and beautiful as you would be in a relationship. To think that he had a chance was ridiculous.
“So are you going with her?” Steve asks from his spot by the desk.
“Yeah, she’s um- she’s bringing a friend though.”
“I hope it’s a cute friend. Maybe you can hook one of us up with the friend.”
Bucky hadn’t thought of that. Maybe it really was just a friend. Now he would have to wait and see.
Tumblr media
You had received Bucky’s message that he was outside and you rushed to get downstairs. Slowing down slightly as you get to the door of the building when you see both your best friend and Bucky standing out there. He looked good, so good it should be illegal. He wore a tight black t-shirt that peeked from under a matching black leather jacket, blue jeans that really showed off his thick thighs, his outfit as a whole somehow making his eyes brighter. You bit back a smile as you saw the confusion on his face as he looked at your best friend.
“So post-it boy, what are your intentions with my Y/N?”
“Darcy leave him alone.” you chide as you walk out of the building, noticing the relief in Bucky’s eyes as you step out of the building. You hug Darcy before standing beside Bucky.
“What? I’m just asking him a question. One that he hasn’t answered.”
“Well I-um.”
“And he’s not going to.” you cut him off. “Can we go now?”
“Fine I won’t ask you any more questions on the condition that you introduce me to one of your super beefy football playing friends.”
“I can do that.”
“Then let's go party.”
Tumblr media
The house was packed, people were already drunk and the music was so loud the bass caused the whole place to shake. But you couldn’t care less about any of those things because the moment the three of you got out of the uber you had taken there, Bucky grabbed your hand and wouldn’t let go as he navigated the overcrowded space. People parted like the red sea for him though, you couldn’t help but wonder if it was because it was him or they were afraid to hurt him, Bucky didn’t seem to care though. He used it to his advantage to get to his friends that were hanging out by the makeshift bar.
“There he is!” Some of his friends shouted. “What took you so long, jerk?”
“You failed to mention you invited the whole school, punk. We would barely get in here.”
“We?” The tall beefy blond with beautiful blue eyes looked past Bucky to find you. His eyes went wide and then he smirked. “Well if it isn’t post-it girl. We have been dying to meet you.”
“We?”
“Sam! Look who's here.”
“Well it was about time we got to meet.” an equally as attractive guy put his arm around Bucky’s shoulder while he smiled at you.  Bucky shrugs off Sam’s arm and moves to stand beside you, before he can say anything Darcy stands in front of you.
“Steve, Sam, this is Y/N. And this is Y/N’s best friend Darcy.”
Sam speaks up before Steve is able to. “Hi Y/N. Darcy, what are you having?”
You can’t help but laugh as you watch Darcy flirt with both men, letting them try to upstage each other. Bucky leans in, his breath on your skin causes yours to hitch  as he asks what you want to drink. The rest of the night is spent drinking, although you don’t want to get drunk just a light buzz and it seems like Bucky is thinking the same thing as he nurses his drink. He stays close to you which you don’t mind. Girls and guys have come up to him with the intention of taking him upstairs but he ignores them, his focus was on only you.
“I love this song, come dance with me.”
“I don’t dance, sugar.”
“Just one dance.”
“I’m not a dancer.”
“Please.” you pout and look at him with big doe eyes and he knows he won’t be able to deny you anything if you keep looking at him like that.
“Just one.” he whispers into your ear. You beam at him as you pull him toward the designated dance floor.
Once you find a spot you start moving to the beat of the song, Bucky’s hands on your hips but he keeps a small space between you. Something you aren’t too fond of. You turn in his embrace, letting your hips sway and you grind your ass against him. His hands tighten their grip on your hips but you don’t let it stop you. Without realizing what you’re doing you grab his hands and wrap them around your waist. That closes the small gap between you, his lips find their way to your shoulder leaving a trail of kisses and nips up and down your neck making you gasp. You moved your head to the side to grant him more access as you moved your hips against him again, a groan escaping his lips meant only for your ears.
The little bubble you were in burst when you heard Darcy calling your name, you didn’t want to walk away from Bucky but he assured you it was ok that most likely she needed you and she did. You left the party shortly after, excusing yourself with the boys. Bucky wanted to leave with you. He’d rather be with you than at this place but you insisted he enjoyed the party. Still he walked you out to the Uber and made sure you and Darcy were in ok as he stood there and watched the car disappear into the night.
“If you don’t ask her out I will.” He heard Samsay as he walked to the backyard after spending some time alone at the front of the house.
“I don’t even-“
“Don’t finish that sentence. I saw the way she was dancing with you. She likes you. Ask her out on a real date.”
His phone goes off, saving him from whatever else Sam was going to say.
Y/N: back home safe. Thanks for tonight I had fun.
Bucky: Me too. Sweet dreams.
He smiled down at his phone before putting it in his pocket.
Tumblr media
He had decided the night before as he walked into his dorm room that he was going to ask you out. Bucky had it planned, hopefully you would like it. He barely slept, he was nervous but mostly excited. When the sun came up and filled his room with light Bucky got up and started on his plan.
Date? 7 pm
It was simple, but it’s how you had become friends in the first place so maybe it would lead to something more. He sat back against his bed waiting to see your curtains pulled back. He held his breath when he noticed the blinds moving and then he saw you look up. Still sleepy but then as  you looked up at his window he thought your eyes went wide but he couldn’t be sure. Then you disappeared back into your room and he didn’t see you again. Bucky’s heart sank.
He started pulling the small squares off of his window when he heard a knock on his door. Bucky pulled the curtains closed thinking it might be Sam or Steve and he didn’t need the embarrassment of having to tell them you ignored his message. He’s surprised to find you, still in your pajamas and a bright smile on your lips. You hold out your hand. A bright pink post-it folded in half sitting on the palm of your hand.
“What’s going on?”
“I ran out of post-it’s.”
He laughed, of course you did, you actually used them daily. Bucky grabs the paper and opens it.
Yes.
He can’t contain his smile when he sees the answer. Bucky’s eyes move from the paper to you and he pulls you in by your waist, gives you the kiss he wanted to give you at the party.
“I’m pretty sure that means I win having the best post-it art this time.” He says after pulling away.
“What should the winner get as a prize?”
“More kisses.”
“I can manage that.” You say as your lips find his again.

anamnesis sounds really cool! which of your ocs are in that one?
Tumblr media
[ @schrodingers-catgirl ]
aaaa thank you both so much!!! <33
the main 6 of that one are eli, kaia, lilith, flynn, charlotte, and mason! i have some side characters attached to (most) of them, but i haven’t gotten around to fully developing them yet lol
i linked to each of their profile docs (trigger warning for vague mentions of various kinds of trauma) if you’d like to read more in depth about them, but i’ll give quick descriptions of them here, too <3
eli is a notorious fuckboy playboy whose entire persona is (at least in part) a lie. he’s actually really sweet and kind of a dork, but he likes to keep that part hidden because it’s easier to put distance between himself and others that way. has a little bit of internet fame. tries to say he plays basketball, but sucks at it.
kaia is probably the quietest and the shyest of the group, but that’s only until you manage to get her to open up. surprisingly funny and comfortable to be around. has the incredibly bad habit to shoulder all her problems by herself while also offering help to other people. perfectionist. needs a hug. deserves a hug.
lilith is the resident Mean And Scary Goth who would actually kill someone for the people she cares about. she’s super protective of kaia and charlotte in particular, but she would beat someone’s ass for the guys, too (even eli, though she’ll never say that to his face). she’s a high fashion designer and also has a cute little black cat uwu
flynn was on track to become a professional baseball player until he threw out his shoulder so badly that it never fully recovered. started working as an assistant coach to a team of middle schoolers after a years-long bout of depression. he’s still a little messed up from the whole ordeal, but he’s pretty lax nonetheless. nice to chill with. or toss a ball back and forth.
charlotte comes from a very wealthy family, but she wishes she didn’t. raised super properly, so she has a hard time actually being herself around other people and comes off really cold when she doesn’t mean to. moved out to college the second she could. shows affection for people by being kind of a brat (see: sarcastic) to them. secretly loves sweets and cute things uwu
mason (or mase, preferably) is one of the friendliest guys you’ll ever meet. the kind of guy that would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. he’s surprisingly good with cars and works as a mechanic despite his otherwise pretty boy-eqsue appearance. has a little sister that he’s super close with <3

What the world knows that the VA does not: Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is safe, effective and can restore health
Tumblr media
Athletes are waking up to the Use of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for brain wound healing, health, endurance, peak performance, and the competitive edge. Game Changer for Football Teams? A high-profile college football program began using HBOT to manage player injuries and fatigue. The therapy quickly became a key factor in their injury management and prevention strategy. The team noted shorter recovery periods after injuries, and players were able to return to play faster than before, demonstrating HBOT's efficacy in a high-contact sports environment. Numerous professional athletes use HBOT. 100 Yards of Wellness Will Offer HBOT to Clemson Athletes Nov 22, 2022 100 Yards of Wellness, Clemson’s new $4.9-million wellness space at Allen N. Reeves Football Complex that spans roughly 300 feet in length that has become a central hub of activity and major point of pride for Tiger football. The treatment and training room area includes all requisite athletic training resources, including a diagnostic office with a full digital X-ray space and diagnostic ultrasound, general medical exam room, 30 yards of turf and hydrotherapy areas, including two underwater treadmills. Among the many features of the recovery center are: • A hyperbaric chamber to create a pressurized environment for concentrated oxygen intake. • A cryotherapy chamber for muscle recovery through extreme cold temperature exposure. • A sensory deprivation float tank that houses 1,200 pounds of Epsom salt dissolved in water at skin temperature to remove athletes from light, sound and some gravitational force. • Infrared hyperthermic Cocoon pods for Far-Infrared light therapy and vibrational massage. • Photobiomodulation therapy beds that leverage multiple wavelengths of infrared light to reduce oxidative stress. • Numerous massage chairs, including both percussive massage and hydromassage options. • Percussive Hypervolt massage guns. • Dedicated tables and space for practitioner-assisted stretching, percussive massage gun therapy and Normatec compressive sleeves provided to each player prior to the season. • Functional testing equipment to obtain objective information on student-athlete muscle and joint function that can be used for injury prevention and return-to-play purposes. The Rise of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in Professional Football: A Game-Changer for Recovery and Performance Sep 5, 2023 By Mudassir Sajad In the fast-paced world of professional football, where every second counts, players are constantly seeking ways to gain a competitive edge. What Makes Mo Vaughn's Academy the Best Baseball Academy in Florida
Four Reasons to Choose Vaughn Sports Academy
Baseball is among the most popular sports in the USA, so it’s unsurprising that many kids want to become professional baseball players. Rookie athletes who wish to gain the knowledge and experience they need to go pro should join baseball academies. Here, they will learn and hone crucial skills like hitting, pitching, fielding, and teamwork.
Tumblr media
If you’re looking for a good baseball academy in Florida, you will find many. However, you will find very few that can rival Vaughn Sports Academy (VSA).
Reasons to join VSA
Major League Baseball (MLB) legend Mo Vaughn founded Vaughn Sports Academy to help nurture new generations of professional baseball players. Many consider VSA among the top baseball academies in Florida for the following reasons:
Nothing beats coaches who are pros
If you want to play as a pro, you simply can’t find a better coach than someone with experience as a professional baseball player. They can give you elite, “insider” insights into what it takes to play at the highest level and help you get there.
Its coaching staff is one of VSA’s biggest draws. At the forefront is Mo Vaughn, one of the best hitters in MLB’s long history. His colleagues are pros with years of experience playing professionally or coaching athletes. With them as your mentors, there is little doubt that your skills will be pushed to incredible heights at VSA.
VSA makes it easier to be consistent
Players who want traditional instruction can book training sessions with any one of the coaches at VSA. But those who can’t attend on-site training or those who learn better with technology may sign up for VSA’s online training program instead. The program is designed to help players perfect their form, develop mental agility, and get practically the same guidance as they would from on-site training.
Mo Vaughn believes in consistency, and VSA’s online program reflects that. The program is accessible to players anytime and anywhere with an internet connection. This makes it easier for players to learn consistently, even during the off-season, and develop effective and powerful routines.
Chosen players receive hands-on experience
The academy’s travel baseball team, VSA Lions, recruits young athletes to compete with the top teams in the country. Chosen players get an idea of what it takes to be successful in the big leagues, and they get a chance to show off their skills at high-level tournaments. They can also improve their skills while forging strong bonds with their teammates. The team has notable wins, including the prestigious Cooperstown Baseball Tournament in New York.
VSA helps you rep for college baseball
Playing college baseball is an excellent opportunity to finish your education and get started on joining a professional team. On top of guiding you to develop the right skills, VSA can help you get noticed by coaches looking for the next college baseball star. Notably, VSA can assist in creating a player profile that highlights your achievements and a video showcase that shows off your talent and athleticism, making you more likely to get that sweet recruitment offer.
VSA is the top choice
There are many baseball academies in Florida, but very few can provide the same experience, focus, and guidance that VSA offers. If you are passionate about baseball and want to unlock your potential, sign up with VSA today!

Player Profile - Dylan Crews
With the MLB Draft coming up on July 9th, let's take a look at potential #1 overall pick, Dylan Crews. Born in 2002 in Florida, Crews quickly showed off his potential. He played for the USA Baseball 14U team and their 18U team that won a gold medal. Crews attended Lake Mary High School, where he played Varsity Baseball for four years and was considered a top MLB Prospect at the time. However, he withdrew his name from the draft after high school and announced his full commitment to play baseball at Louisiana State University. Crews immediately started at Right Field for LSU as a freshman in 2021. In his freshman season, Crews slugged at an astounding rate, batting .362 with 18 home runs, which set a record for the most home runs ever hit by an LSU freshman. In addition, he was named National Freshman of the Year by Perfect Game. After the 2021 season, Crews switched to Center Field and continued to play at a high level, earning Co-SEC Player of the Year in 2022 while hitting .349 with 22 home runs. In his final season with LSU in 2023, Crews led LSU to their 7th College World Series Title, batting .426 with 18 homers and winning the Golden Spikes Award given to the nation's best college baseball player. Crews is expected to make an immediate impact on the team that selects him, as he has exceptional speed, power, and hitting.
Crews has been described by many scouts as a five-tool player, which is very rare. A five-tool player excels at hitting for average, hitting for power, base running, throwing, and fielding. Crews’ main weakness is his high whiff percentage on changeups and sliders. However, Crews still had a very high average on both of those types of pitches.
Although he is likely the most talented player in the draft, Crews reportedly is not interested in being selected first overall to the Pirates. Crews and his agent are asking for a record-breaking $10 million signing bonus, which would surpass the $8.42 million bonus that was given to Spencer Torkelson in 2020. One potential reason why Crews and his agent might be asking for such a high bonus is to be rejected by the Pirates so that he can then be chosen by the Nationals. Joe Doyle of Future Star Series has stated that Crews "fancies the idea of playing in Washington” instead of Pittsburgh. Crews and his agent have “purportedly thrown gaudy signing bonus demands at the Pirates" to try and get Crews to be selected with the #2 overall pick to the Washington Nationals.

iHeart welcomes AI-powered Dad joke podcast
My Lenovo laptop has been reliable, sturdy, and fast -- but never once has it been funny. Maybe a few times when the screen went black, and I had to reboot, and hold my breath that my data wasn't lost, could be somehow construed as funny in a passive-aggressive manner.
iHeart has decided that the future may be in AI (artificial intelligence) podcasts. That would certainly cut down on the health insurance costs for the hosts.
So last week,iHeartPodcasts announced Daily Dad Jokes, an AI powered stand-up comedy podcast from Klassic Studios, has joined The iHeartPodcast Network. The podcast, started in late 2020 by Klassic Studios and believed to be the first AI-produced show, has surpassed 10 million downloads.
Daily Dad Jokes is now distributed by iHeartPodcasts. How long before the AI takes over iHeart? We'll never know.
Cumulus purchases BLEAV sports podcast network
This is the main theme or mission statement of the BLEAV podcast network. Every team. Every topic. Everywhere.
Does that claim include the Turkish soccer league? Billiard teams? There are hundreds in New York City? Kickball? Synchronized swimming events?
Anyway, the Bleav network has joined the Cumulus Podcast Network. Bleav podcasts cover the NFL, MLB, NBA, NCAAF, NCAAB, SEC, and NHL as well as soccer, betting, and pop culture for more than 50 million followers. Bleav will be the first network that will feature a show with a current or former player from every American professional and major college sports team, providing fans the insight and access only a player can provide. (I'm not sure about that boast.)
The Cumulus Podcast Network will distribute, market, and monetize more than 300 Bleav shows. So sports talk radio, watch out. The rage, vitriol, and borderline crazy discussions that have defined your success is moving to a new and more visible format -- podcasting -- where you can actually rewind and replay the wingnut conversations.
Here's my local example of sports talk radio and many sports podcast shows.
When Rob Thompson took over as manager of baseball's Philadelphia Phillies last year and took them all the way to the World Series, he was hailed as a genius on local sports talk. This year, when the Phillies got off to a horrible start, the sports talk callers were screaming for him to be fired. And these were the same callers who praised him so volubly last October.

In the weeks leading up to the 2023 Superbowl game, San Francisco 49ers’ defensive player Charles Omenihu was allowed to play in the game against the Philadelphia Eagles after being arrested and charged with domestic violence on January 23. His coach, Kyle Shanahan, said at the time:  “We feel very good about letting the legal process take care of itself and don’t feel we should kick him off the team at this time.” Omenihu played 38 defensive snaps in the 49ers’ 31-7 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the National Football Conference Championship Game on Sunday on January 29, 2023.
Gender-based violence is not limited to the National Football League (NFL) or even to the sport of football. From youth leagues to pro teams, stories of gender-based violence are all too common in the world of sports. High-profile incidents and allegations of abuse have occurred in a variety of college sports including hockey, gymnastics, and swimming and professional sports like the NFL and Major League Baseball (MLB).
Gender-based violence—including sexual and domestic violence as well as child sexual abuse—in SportsWorld is epidemic. SportsWorld, a term coined by Earl Smith, refers to the notion that sports is more than the games played on the field or court. It encompasses all of the attendant structures including travel, television and broadcast rights, and highly lucrative contracts for both players and coaches. Gender-based violence is prevalent in SportsWorld for many reasons; SportsWorld is a mirror of society, and many sports have a culture that promotes traditional expressions of masculinity, including aggression and sexual exploits. The primary reason for gender-based violence in SportsWorld is because the institutions and people that make up SportsWorld fail to hold offenders accountable. This includes players, coaches, physicians, and trainers. When acts of violence are reported, even amidst mounting evidence, they are allowed to continue to coach, play in games, and provide medical care.
As faculty at the Center for the Study and Prevention of Gender-Based Violence at the University of Delaware, we conduct research that focuses on violence in SportsWorld.  To better understand the prevalence of gender-based violence in sports—as well as to catalog the consequences for those who are accused of and perpetrate it—we built a unique dataset.
The Gender-Based Violence in Sports Database catalogs more than 270 individual cases, dating from 1974 to the present, that involve active and retired college and professional athletes and coaches in just about every major sport, including football, basketball, baseball, hockey, boxing, mixed martial arts, motor sports, tennis, track and field, swimming, and gymnastics. Even though many sports are represented, football stands out. Just over half of the 274 cases involved athletes who play college or professional football. Cases are derived from publicly available sources including newspapers and websites that index reports, arrests, charges, and citations for any incident of gender-based violence.
Key Findings
We found that in over 75% of the cases, regardless of whether the perpetrator was charged, arrested or convicted, the accused athlete or coach was allowed to remain on the team and continue to work or compete. Stunningly, many of the individuals who continued to play or coach were charged, arrested, and/or convicted of a serious violent crime.
Tumblr media
Many of those arrested, charged, and convicted are serial abusers: 15% of athletes in our database were arrested more than once for acts of gender-based violence.
It’s not just high-profile athletes who are not held accountable. In fact, among the cases in our database, coaches and staff remained employed, often for years after the first accusations were made.
This was the case with Larry Nassar, who practiced sports medicine at Michigan State University and also worked for USA Gymnastics. Nassar was convicted of sexual abuse in a case which saw hundreds of girls and women come forward. The first incident was reported by a parent and dates back to 1997. But Nassar continued to provide medical services to athletes at Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics for another 20 years until news of the abuse was reported in the Indianapolis Star in 2016. and he was fired by Michigan State. It was a similar story with U.S. Olympic Swimming and national team coach Mitch Ivey and former USA Swimming coach Andrew King. King was eventually convicted of multiple counts of child molestation while Ivey was banned for life from the sport’s governing body after years of harassment allegations.
Why Existing Policies Don’t Work
When athletes, coaches, physicians, and trainers are not held accountable, it puts others at potential risk for victimization. Many organizations have policies and processes for addressing athlete and staff misconduct, including colleges and universities and professional leagues—most notably, the NFL. Yet, despite the presence of these policies, athletes, coaches, and staff are rarely, if ever, held accountable and even fewer in any meaningful way.
In 2014, in response to criticism, the NFL toughened its stance toward players accused of domestic violence with a new personal conduct policy that included an automatic six-game ban for a first violation of the policy. Crucially, the policy would hold players accountable “even where the conduct itself does not result in conviction of a crime.” Yet, a 2017 investigation by the Bleacher Report found that since the implementation of the 2014 revisions to the personal conduct policy, this six-game ban had been enforced in only two of the 18 cases in which players faced domestic violence allegations.
Our analysis reveals that even when sanctions are applied, those suspensions are often reduced. This was the case with NFL players Ben Roethlisberger and Greg Hardy, both of whom had lengthier initial suspensions that were eventually reduced to four games in response to challenges by the NFL Players Association. Speaking to the New York Times, Alissa Leeds, a former executive with the NFL, noted, “Everything’s excused in the name of football.”
Recommendations
Overall, we find that policies are largely ineffective because they give too much power to the players, coaches, teams, and leagues to override the recommendations they lay out. Therefore, we recommend legislation that would require accusations of gender-based violence (and all crimes) that are reported directly to an organization (e.g., a college or university student conduct office, the league offices of the NFL or Major League Baseball, or USA Gymnastics) be immediately referred out to the criminal legal system. Removing people with a vested interest in the success of the athlete or coach from adjudicating accusations of criminal behavior is a good next step in creating accountability measures that hold the potential for reducing gender-based violence in sports.
The database is available for journalists and researchers interested in addressing gender-based violence in sports. It can be accessed at the Center for the Study and Prevention of Gender-Based Violence website.

Sports and Regional Brands
Tumblr media
Link
Let’s talks sports! At first glance, sports may seems an odd diversion from my usual planning rants and photography, but sports have been deeply intertwined within the American urban fabric. New stadiums are built at breakneck speed and major professional franchises are lucrative bargaining chips owners can use to empty city coffers and bolster their personal prestige. A professional franchise is seen as a major asset, and there are still a few cities that can be goosed up for a move to the majors. With the stigma on sports betting gone, Las Vegas and its casino dollars have been in play for some time now and the city has quickly obtained a professional hockey and football team.
Sports has also become the keystone for a decadent American culture of excess. Professional sports organizations have a penchant for taking the most banal and inane aspects of the sports experience and monetizing them to death. Even the mild diversion of watching college players get selected by pro teams has become bloated beyond belief, complete with an elaborate outdoor spectacle and host cities contributing millions of dollars to secure the event. Has your small city achieved minor notoriety as a training site for a professional team? Well be prepared to pony up some funds to maintain that status. How about broadcasting NFL games on Nickelodeon with low-effort gimmicks to attract younger viewers and cultivate a new audience? A few cheap marketing ploys can be tolerable, even mildly amusing to some, but the big picture that forms around professional sports is one of cynical opportunism and rampant rent-seeking.
Sports ownership too is fraught with land mines. A city may be blessed to have a low-profile, competent owner or it can be cursed with some plutocrat who would love nothing more than to move the team to greener pastures. In our increasingly globalized world, sports ownership often falls to owners with marginal stake in their communities who take a kind of mercenary attitude to their franchises. The notion that owners of professional sports franchises are assholes is nothing new necessarily. Pro sports has been a pretty rotten endeavor for longer than most of us would like to admit, but fans could take small consolation in that while owners were assholes, they were generally assholes with a stake in the local economy. For example, former Cincinnati Reds owners Marge Schott may be loathsome by contemporary standards and her acumen as a team owner did leave something to be desired. However, she did keep ticket prices low and used her personal wealth to enrich important city institutions and assets.
Some sports may be more amenable to reform than others due to the nature of their fanbase. NASCAR, for example, is deeply connected to the South and attempts to expand the brand in the 2000′s have largely backfired. Today there appears to be some interest in bringing the brand back to its roots as historic tracks like North Wilkesboro Speedway are hosting NASCAR events once more. Major League Baseball may be heading towards a reckoning as well as attendance has plummeted precipitously in the league, while other major leagues have largely held serve. The NFL and NBA though remain the major stumbling blocks to a better sports experience. The NFL is still wildly popular, with the Super Bowl being one of the few remaining mass culture events in America. While NBA team brands are less lucrative than in football, elite players such as Lebron James remain household names that can secure major endorsement deals from a bevy of large companies.
My own impressions are that pro sports can best be reformed only after it dies a horrible death. Few operations live and die as much by the personal eccentricities of their owners as professional sports operations do and I don’t see the mindless expansions, relocations and unrelenting monetization of all aspects of professional sports operations ceasing until the franchises start to hemorrhage money. For 10 dollars I can watch multiple amateur wrestling matches a night and see interesting stunts and feat of strength, so why shelve out lots of money to see one pro game? Today professional sports is essentially an exercise in rubbernecking, a car wreck with giant egos and temperamental personalities to boot. Its entertaining in a tabloid sort of way, but it isn’t something that is worth your time and, more importantly, your money.
