Hey!

Since you seem to know much about books, I wanted to ask for recs.

I'm relatively new to the romance genre. All the M/M I've read has come from novels and works that have very...seme/uke esque dynamics and seem to enforce heteronormative standards regarding pursuit, romance, character interplay, and even sex (with fixed top and bottom postions).

Then I read For Real by Alexis Hall. Now I felt the character work and particularly the romantic chemistry was lacking, but the sexual dynamics presented opened me up to a whole new world of queerness. I enjoy reading verse/switch couples far more than ones with fixed positions cause for whatever reason, a lot of authors seem to take sexual position to be representative of the character's personality as related to a het romantic dynamic.

So I want to ask you for recs for any M/M verse/switch couples with fun dynamics and solid romantic chemistry. Preferably set in the modern day (Period pieces are meh to me). I have no qualms about subject matter as long as everything is handled decently and the ending is HEA.

Al here reminds me so much of myself in my final year of school and I just want to make him a cuppa and wrap him in a blanket. Al's relationships, romantic and platonic, are written so well and I can't wait to see where it goes.

All The Pieces Fall | @lanaturnergetup | Scorbus | Rated M The other half of #scorbusfest2k23. Poor Al here makes me want to give him a hug too! The Potter siblings dynamics here are just *chef's kiss* and the yearning between these two boys is top shelf!

Visit | @turanga4 | Gen | Rated T I am in awe of Turanga and consider myself extremely lucky that I occasionally get to beta for her. This fic from McGonagall's POV is set at the end of GOF, in the Hospital Wing. It absolutely nails McGonagall's characterisation and is such a lovely insight into her feelings for Harry.

Kiss Each Other Clean | RonsGirlFriday | Romione | Rated T I am extremely late in discovering @constitutionalweasleymonarchy's (RonsGirlFriday on AO3) fics, but it's safe to say I'm obsessed. I struggled with picking just one to put on this list but today, this is it. Ron and Hermione comforting each other after the battle, so exhausted and wrung out but on the precipice of a relationship. It's beautifully written and I recommend all of her fics.

Fumes That Curled and Twisted | @uncertainwallflower | Jily | Rated G This Jily microfic might not have many words but it uses them brilliantly. A tiny look into Lily's mind when she can smell Amortentia.

Stars in His Eyes | @celestemagnoliathewriter | Blackbolt | Rated T January 2023 was the month I discovered Sirius/Kingsley and I am hooked. Celeste asks the question 'why did Kingsley have so many pictures of Sirius?' and gives us an extremely satisfying answer (followed by a devastating sequel), with a lovely side of Remadora.

Plus a rec list from January 2023 wouldn't be complete without all of the wonderful fics written for @harrypocter's Winter Sun Drabble Fest.

It's a short on this month because I literally only decided to do this tonight and had to comb back through my AO3 history. I'm going to aim to keep this up every month so hopefully February's list will be a bit longer!

Here are the game recs I gave my friends after looking through the under $10 section, minus an argument about how League of Legends is free (so is drinking battery acid).

(all prices are in NZD so check on your own region's page. if you live in the US, USD is worth about double NZD so halve the prices I guess)

Missing from this list is Celeste, which I picked up today for about $6 - you know celeste I dont need to explain how it's good -, death must die, quantum protocol (slick visual novel and deck building strategy game), carrion (flesh monster metroidvania) and dragon age inquisition, all of which are pretty good and very cheap right now (I bought these games myself)

I wanna stress how good Outward is like its fucking life changing and nobody plays it. Wizard of Legend is also super underrated.

Another recommendation I can add here is Nova Drift, a lesser known little rougelite that's really fun even in it's early state. Not sure how much it's going for right now tho.

Morrowind was actually the GOTY edition which was priced the same as the GOTY edition of oblivion, so ignore that complaint.

My opinion on DOS2 vs BG3 is biased because I dont like dnd.

Meet Me In Another Life by Catriona Silvey – a sci-fi story about all the lives you could live with someone, and whether it's possible to know them completely.

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas — a poignant and powerful YA story about police brutality, racism, and courage.

Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid — a fictional documentary style book about a fictional 70s rock and roll band, with characters I just adore

Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt — a story about loneliness, found family, healing, and a giant pacific octopus

Our Missing Hearts by Celeste Ng — I'm just going to steal the back cover summary bc it's worded beautifully: "Our Missing Hearts is an old story made new, of the ways supposedly civilized communities can ignore the most searing injustice. It’s a story about the power—and limitations—of art to create change, the lessons and legacies we pass on to our children, and how any of us can survive a broken world with our hearts intact."

True Biz by Sara Novak — such a cool novel that really taught me a lot about Deaf culture, while also just making me love and root for the characters

Well, pre-internet childhood/young adolescent ship would be Logan and Nightcrawler from the OG X-Men movies, I’m not sure what that ship name is. But actual like proper internet using, teenage ship would’ve been Spirk and MattxMello. I actually met my internet bestie through MxM 9 years ago on this god forsaken app and we’re still going strong. (also Kingdom Hearts slash ships, literally just all of them in a big pile).

last song:

Skeleton by Fewjar, my current Jason song. The ending is not my fave but the lyrics still fuck in that part.

last movie:

Oh god, I don’t know. Probably some random horror film. I did watch Glass Onion recently.

currently reading:

I just finished House of Leaves. I haven’t had a lot of time for fiction reading. It was deeply enjoyable. I went into it completely blind and the horror/interactive decoding was really thrilling. I will say that it did fuck with my mental health a little bit so reader beware.

But for non-fiction I’m reading through... Lists 10 different books on therapy (not CBT gags, mostly somatic), multiculturalism, trauma, social justice, community work, and intersectional identities. If anyone wants good recs for trauma stewardship/work/healing, practical leftist theory (not just wank that doesn’t actually help anyone), advocacy, and the diversity of human experience through the lens of social issues lmk and I’ll send my recs. (I also have most of these in pdf form so I can send them to anyone interested, if you want).

My number one rec that I am currently reading (again) is: We Do This ‘Til We Free Us. It is an abolition and transformative justice book but it also touches on the myth of perfect victims and community organizing.

OH! I’m also reading through Hellenistic Astrology: The Study of Fate and Fortune by Chris Brennan. I’m super intro traditional astrology (not so much modern)

currently watching:

Critical Role campaign 3 and Puppet History (just watched the season finale).

currently consuming:

I’m actually unsure if this means food or media lol. I mean, I am a known Animal Crossing consumer (Pocket Camp and New Horizons). I don’t know how to like things without consuming them. I’m currently bingeing through Hollow Knight and just got done with a 20-25ish hour Celeste playthrough in the span of like 5 days. I know this makes it seem like I really enjoy platformers, but I don’t actually lol.

currently craving:

I relate strongly to force’s response to this. Umm, I’m craving a normal sleep schedule before the Spring grad semester suplexes me into ridiculous deadlines.

OKAY SO !! i gotta start by saying that i havent read many books and thats one of the reasons i didnt respond to this ask aside from me taking a break i was a lil embarrassed ngl BUT my response is finally here and i hope you enjoy my rant/rec list !!

all quiet on the western front - erich maria remarque

when i tell you this book destroyed the view i had of life and then built it back again...im not exaggerating. its so beautifully written, and the characterization is wonderful. the narration felt very personal to me, like the story was a little secret between me and paul (the main character), and i don't think it was bc it was written in 1st person pov. ofc im sure it influenced my perception of the story, but the language that was used and constant contradictions and the way paul would go on long, eloquently put together, tangents about his thoughts and emotions and opinions to then disregard everything he said with a sudden wave of doubt and hopelessness — i think it made him very human. i felt very connected to his character, and i do think it was bc i had grown fond of the version i saw of him in the 2022 film (which has nothing on the book, can't even compare em really), the already preexisting feeling was only amplified by the narration and the intricate sentences AND AND i saw my own writing be reflected on the book — for instance, i noticed there were very long long sentences, which is something i rlly like doing. all in all, it showcases the ww1 soldier experience very crudely, in a very beautifully sad way; you can feel remarque's pain and anger in every sentence — his opinion about the war and its futility are very clear, and it honestly makes the book a 100 times better. though i do think my opinion is VERY biased when it comes to this book so please do take it with a grain or a spoonful really of salt

everything i never told you - celeste ng

i read this book a while ago, but even so it remains as one of my top 3 i dont read a lot bear with me TT the book has a very catchy opening line, which instantly had me hooked — it narrates the story of a mixed-race, chinese-american family in the 70s and how they navigate the disappearance of their daughter. i think the book does an amazing job at juggling multiple povs without neglecting any character. it develops each individual storyline very well and the way it delves into the internal conflicts and psyche of each character is just 10/10

little fires everywhere - celeste ng

i gotta be honest, this book didnt "hook" me as much as the other two did, but i still think it was very good and definitely worth a read. i think celeste ng has the tendency to start her books very actively? what i mean with this is that she opens up the story with a very shocking fact or occurrence (?) and then ties everything back to the beginning — almost as if she started writing the story backwards. i think that's really cool, bc even though we as the reader know the "climatic" event, we dont exactly know what happened and are left at the edge of our seats wondering what exactly went down for this to happen, ya know?

the metamorphosis - franz kafka

now, this is also me being biased bc i have the biggest and greatest, most softest spot for kafka and this book. in short, and i mean in very short, the story's about a man who suddenly turns into a bug — the beauty of simplicity in summaries. i read it when i was 16 in literature class and i was absolutely smitten with the story the main character...i really wanted to fix him, kay?? at the time i wasn't at my bestest in terms of mental stability, so im sure that influenced my love and understanding for the book, but analysing it in class and delving into the context behind the book and the author, and interpreting it from my own pov just sigh it was so good.

like water for chocolate - laura esquivel

FUCK i can't express how fun this book is. its a romance book, and also a perfect example of magical realism. AND IT DOES IT THROUGH FOOD !! tita (the main character) has a very deep bond with cooking, and because of this, the food she makes is a direct reflection of the emotional state she was in while she did so — cook the food that is. and, if im not mistaken bc i also read this book when i was 16, each chapter starts with the recipe that tita will prepare — i loved that detailed so much because i love cooking as well, tho i prefer baking. and though it is technically a tragic-romance novel, it is very lighthearted (and i mean this in the bestest way possible) and very funny imo. i would recommend it to anyone in the blink of an eye.
