POI - Impressions of Sunday
For reasons possibly relating to my own selfish shoehorning, Val was kind of involved in a lot of things in today’s session, and once we were done, I was sort of inspired by some of the Feelings I know she’s been dealing with. So I wrote a few very short impressions of scenes that happened in miniature, which probably don’t make a ton of sense to the vast majority of people but….hey, it was a writing exercise and I’ve been blocked for long enough that I’ll take it.
A bit shy of 500 words, from today’s session.

Sarula’s armor will be decorated with a harp and hollyphants, naturally.
It comes to them like breathing, the idea that they’re born for something, that they’ll spend their life carving out a little piece for Milil in every tiny action, in every scrap of metal and clothing they own. Val’s gut twists with a jealousy that she swallows down like bile.
She asks for nothing on her own armor, and keeps her sleeve rolled down over her forearm.

“I just do it,” Ianry says, shrugging.
The look Val gives him must seem rather like confusion, because he begins a fumbling explanation that she only half hears. Her mind is still clinging to that shrug, to the idea that his magic - real magic - just came when called, like a particularly loyal pet.
Like it had done for her, the last few times she’d reached for it.
She barely hears his explanation, because the relief if it is nearly too much to bear.

Val is halfway through her gushing when Rona looks up, shy and smiling over the rim of her coffee cup.
“Thanks for being my shield up there.”
Her voice is soft, and so full of delighted earnest that Val stops mid-sentence. A shield, she’d said. The little glow of divine magic in her chest suddenly warms with purpose.
“Oh,” she says, with a dismissive wave of a hand, “oh, I’ll always be a shield.”
For you does not make it past her lips, but by Rona’s smile, it doesn’t need to.
