Eilen Jewell at Natalie’s Grandview, Columbus, Ohio, Sept. 10, 2023
“I’ve been missing you all,” Eilen Jewell said upon taking the stage before a full house at Natalie’s Grandview. She then spent the next 100 minutes proving it.
Playing acoustic and electric guitars, harmonica and maracas and backed by matching, black-clad Johnny Sciascia on double bass, ex-husband Jason Beek on drums and harmony vocals and Jerry Miller’s electric guitar, Jewell played a cross-section of songs from her discography, covers of Loretta Lynn, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Bessie Smith numbers and made the case she should be filling spaces much bigger than the Columbus, Ohio, restaurant she visited Sept. 10.
Jewell was the star, but Miller was the brightest co-star, tossing off licks inspired those who came before; conjuring a train whistle and the Allman Brothers’ “Revival” during “Rich Man’s World” and weaving snippets of “Third Stone from the Sun,” “Paint it Black,” “Rebel, Rebel” and “Day Tripper” into Smith’s “If You Catch Me Stealing.”
Such displays caused Jewell and her bandmates to look at one another with incredulous delight as Miller consistency elicited audience approval to rival that of Jewell’s across the set, heavy on tracks from 2023’s Get Behind the Wheel, and such cuts as “Crooked River,” “Winnemucca,” “Breakaway,” “Lethal Love” and “Alive.”
When she wasn’t tapping the Wheel, Jewell was taking requests - “You’re writing the setlist, so I trust you,” she said. This led to “our most ill-received song,” a political ditty known as “79 Cents (The Meow Song),” which addresses women’s unequal pay and a certain politician who wants to grab women by the kitty, and her version of “Green River,” which goes nicely with Jewell’s other CCR homage, the soundalike “Crawl.”
Jewell mixes up a batch of “Mystic”-era Van Morrison, Neil Young, Johnny Cash, Lynn and others to come out sounding and singing exactly like herself. To that end, Jewell performed the latter’s “Whispering Sea” and wished she’d followed more closely in her footsteps.
“She started her career with a hit, which is genius,” Jewell said of Lynn. “I wish I’d thought of that.”
But here’s the thing. While Jewell makes good records, the self-described Queen of the Minor Key is at her best on stage.

Diana Wegner
It had been several days since Diana had her life given back to her, albeit by the skin of her teeth. To her, it may have seemed like months since she had seen the man - Arthur - yet she found herself thinking of him often. Each time she did, she pinched herself, remembering the vows she choked through in the chapel, five years prior.
Not that she had to pinch herself often. Where she grew up with ample time on her hands to think and read and embroider and mull over the state of the world, she now had a ranch to take charge of. Cows to milk, sheep to shear in the summer, chickens to feed.
A typical day began in her tent. This was the first abnormality of her would-be married life. The tent behind the store that Arthur had seen had a companion tent for three quarters of every month. Each morning in the tent had its reason for starting there, but this morning was defined by cold water, a pail, and a set of bloody undergarments.
Diana grunted as she scrubbed them clean. She had grown used to this particular part of womanhood in recent years - before, her parents would never have dreamt she’d be put to such a task. Then again, they would be appalled if they saw her in any capacity today.
After the underclothes were scrubbed beyond recognition - with only a light brown stain, where a deep cherry red had been - she got herself dressed for the morning. For ranchwork, she opted for her pants, a loose pair, with a black unbuttoned shirt. She pulled out a pleasant sage green hat  - a round thing that had a sturdy, ornamental rope spiraling around its trim.
The hat provided some good protection from the beating May sun, an especially useful trait given the lack of shade beside the big green barn. The various chores took Diana the better part of the day - feed the chickens, help Cripps set up the stew pot. Finally, she would reward herself with her favorites: the cattle. The great cows, Juno and Bessie, all but ran to the sight of Diana. They were some of her only friends of late - it was too hard for Eugene to forbid her from speaking to animals.
“Hey, girls,” she cooed, petting both of them before picking up some hay. The cows mooed in response, nudging each other’s faces out of the way for the first bite. “There ya go,” Diana said again, feeling their hot breath on her hands. The great big bull stood nearby, waiting his turn. He had just been branded - the scar, and the pain from it, made the beast a bit shy of farmhands. The scar on his rump reminded Diana of her other purpose.
“Seamus?” she called, grabbing another handful of hay. She called the name again as she walked over to the bull, beginning to feed it. “Thereeee, Vulcan, there ya go. I’m sorry, buddy,” she said. She knew better than to try petting him. “I’ll pick you something for that later.”
“Seamus?” she called again. I swear, if he’s drunk again… “Seamus? Where are you, you lazy sod!”
The grunting from behind the workbench told her all she needed to know.
“You been on the moonshine again, then?”
Seamus bumped his head, and swore. “No,” he replied. “I’ve just been organizing the goods all day and magically collapsed!” The moonshine bottles clinked together under the bench.
“Anything of use come by, then?” she asked, hoping for a hit.
“Just these earrings - oh, and a silver bracelet. Nothing of much-”
“I’ll decide that, thank you very much.”
A small bag and a few coins exchanged hands. Seamus and Diana had formed an understanding three years ago, when Diana had caught him buying stolen goods from the brigands found around the county. She gained his allegiance when she’d promised not to tell Eugene, who would not only have thrown a fit, but would have demanded a hefty sum of the profits. Her husband was not only a hard-handed owner, but a ruthless capitalist with a nose for cash like a bloodhound.
In exchange for some money, Seamus gave Diana the fine pieces of jewelry he came across. Paired with the feathers of pheasants, ducks and geese, Diana had grown skilled at creating small trinkets - a skill she had truly perfected as a child. The cowboys who frequented the store often liked to adorn their hats.
The bag secured on her gunbelt, Diana turned again to seamus. “Any new carts?” Seamus also dealt in stolen buggies, which were few and far between.
“Only one - a little two seater buggy. Romantic, fancy little thing,” he answered, and before Diana could ask, he said “Mister Wegner took it out already. Went to Valentine. Something about a horse?”
Diana raised her eyebrows. “How long do you think he’ll be there?”
“He brought a money clip with him. And a flask.”
So, it was an all night excursion. Eugene had a gambling habit, a drinking habit, and, when it suited him, a spending habit. Horses were his vice. He always had to have the fastest steed in the Heartlands, or else it became everyone else’s problem. Before her banishment to the tents, such a thing had been her burden to bear. Diana shuddered at the thought.
But today, a blessing. The house was open. The maids were easy bribes, and the greenhorns who guarded the house were already out with the sheep.
“Thank you, Seamus. That’ll be all.”
“Yes ma’am,” the Irishman replied, and he hightailed his way into the barn looking for something to do. Diana, a spring in her step, walked over to the big green house, the crown of Emerald Ranch. She supposed she should call it her house, but it wasn’t. This house was a place she frequented, sure, but it wasn’t hers.
The maid moved to stop her at the bottom of the steps, but Diana quickly silenced her with a flash of the silver earrings Seamus had given her. It was enough to buy silence for today, but the best bet for future visits was a platinum pair. Diana walked up the stairs, confident, secure in the fact that she didn’t need to hide her steps from her husband. Valentine was a half days trip away - she wouldn’t be surprised if he stayed there overnight.
“Miriam?” she called, hoping not to scare the girl.
“Diana?!” The response came from down the hall, and Diana took out the key, a secret copy Cripps had made for her. The click of the lock was music to her ears, and she opened the door to find her stepdaughter adorned in a simple black nightgown.
Miriam pulled Diana into a bearhug before she was given a chance to say hello.
“My God, I’ve missed you. Father’s been a terror these last few nights,” the girl sighed, face buried in Diana’s hair.
“I’ve missed you too,” Diana said, and she pulled away to notice tears in Miriam’s eyes. This was almost enough to bring tears to her own as well - she blinked them away, trying to focus on every detail of Miriam’s face.
Beautiful as both the women were, they bore little resemblance. Miriam was a blonde, her hair in a permanent updo, her legs perpetually hidden behind a skirt. She was a skinny woman, all skin and bones, a new development since the incident of the saloon. Her face, picturesque as always, was contorted with tears and another emotion Diana recognized well. Anger.
“What has he been doing? Talking about?” Diana asked. How strange it was, for a wife to ask that of her husband.
“Mostly blather about the ranch. Farmhands never do enough, blasted maids, you know. But yesterday and today he was on about some horse up in Valentine,” Miriam reported, transformed. This was business now.
“I heard about that, from Seamus. Did he say anything more about the sheep?”
“Why?” Miriam looked puzzled at the question. “What’s wrong with the sheep?”
Diana couldn’t believe it. She knew Eugene kept Miriam in a proverbial ivory tower, but she could scarce believe how much he kept from his own daughter. Miriam was practically a grown woman, at 16 years old, but Eugene sheltered her like a 6 year old princess.
“You didn’t hear the gunshots a few days ago?”
“When?”
“About two hours before I came to dinner that day. It was mutton that night. Ring any bells?”
Miriam paled - she looked sick at the mention. “I do. But I didn’t hear, because…”
Diana’s heart pounded. What the hell happened while she was out?!
“We were in the basement before dinner. He…was having me try on mother’s old dresses. Claimed he wanted to sell some, but he didn’t want to get rid of anything that fit me,” Miriam said, her eyes downcast. “That’s why I was so quiet at dinner.”
Diana recoiled. She hadn’t been surprised that a family dinner was quiet - they either devolved into a den of snakes snapping at each other, or remained silent for their duration. Eugene was a firm believer in being the man of the house, and asserted this often at the dinner table.
She was more concerned about the basement.
“Did he…do anything else?” she probed.
“No,” Miriam replied, quickly. Assertively. “He just said I looked nice in the dresses, then went back upstairs. I…imbibed that night.” Miriam blushed at the confession.
“So did I,” Diana said, the memory of the moonshine sliding down her throat like berry-flavored kerosene. She was surprised that Miriam didn’t imbibe more often, given her seclusion.
“I did meet someone,” Diana added, an involuntary blush rising to her cheeks. “Two days ago, some O’Driscoll’s tried to come after the sheep. I thought I was a goner, until some cowboy shot them both in the head. It was like he shot at the speed of light, and twice as accurate. They didn’t know what hit them!” Diana was gushing now, and she couldn't stop. “Had a nice southern accent too.”
Miriam giggled, but there was a caution to her. “So…are you…”
Diana started. “Heavens, no!” she yelped. “No…I was talking about him…for you! If Eugene knew you could get a suitor, and if it was some strong cowboy like this man, then maybe-”
Miriam’s eyes, at their spilling point, gave Diana pause. She turned towards the window, looking down the center of the ranch.
“I know you love me like I’m your own…but please. You need to know me, too. You need to know that I’m not ready yet,” she choked.
“Miriam, I-” Diana stuttered. “I’m so sorry, I just thought…” she trailed off, and steadied herself, walking towards her stepdaughter. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to open up old wounds.”
“It’s not that old. Maybe to you it is, with your ranching and your sheep, but up here? Time moves like molasses, and grief twice as slow.”
Miriam was three times the reader Diana would ever be, and for good reason. It showed in these moments, where she seemed more the ghost of a poet than an imprisoned prairie nymph. Diana was almost unstung by her words.
“I…well, I can’t say I know, but I understand. Time will resume soon.”
“How?”
“Because I’ll kill Eugene if he keeps you here beyond your 18th birthday.”
“Good luck with that,” Miriam said, scoffing. “More likely he’ll just marry me off and you’ll never see me again. Send me off in the night…”
“Not if I have anything to do with it,” Diana said, setting herself up for a joke. “In fact, if he even tries-”
The pair were cut off by Pluto’s barking, right below the window. The dog was in earnest. All Diana knew was that Pluto only barked like this as an alarm. A warning.
“Damn,” she muttered. “It’s Pluto.” Miriam knew what she meant instantly.
“Father’s not supposed to be back this early! He wouldn’t even be halfway to Valentine yet!”
“Either way, it’s something. Pluto doesn’t mess around.” Diana moved to leave, before pausing. She reached into the small bag Seamus gave her, and pulled out the silver bracelet. She held out the pretty thing to Miriam. “Here,” she said, unhooking the clasp.
Miriam kept her wrist at her side, to Diana’s confusion. It wasn’t like Miriam to deny such a gift - it was something that kept her sanity, handling the trinkets from the wider world.
“Keep it. Give it to Josh,” she whispered, moving to her desk. She pulled out an envelope. “I know it's a waste of paper, too, but…” she handed the envelope to Diana. It said, in bold letters on the front, Dear Mother. “Burn these two and spread the ashes over both of them. They’re both in the envelope,” she said.
Diana knew immediately what she meant, and nodded. “I will,” she said, and paused. “I love you, Miriam,” she added.
“I love you too,” Miriam replied. “Now go. You know what could happen.” Diana hesitated, to which Miriam laughed. “I’ll be fine.”
“So will I,” Diana said, grinning. “What else could he do, anyway?”
Arthur Morgan
There was still sleep in Arthur’s eyes when he heard Tilly’s voice float over to him. A welcome wake-up, compared to something like Bill’s grumbling or the drunken singing of Reverend Swanson. Arthur had slept most of the day away after being on guard duty the night before.
“Hey, Arthur- oh, sorry. Want me to come back another time?” Tilly asked, concern showing on her face.
“Nah,” Arthur grunted as he rose. His neck popped as he turned his head to the side. “D’you need something?”
“I just got a message from Hosea - he said to ask if you could meet him at some place called Emerald Ranch. Said he found something, struck a deal with the foreman near there?”
Emerald Ranch. Arthur was glad for the excuse to go back there. He could check on his bear hide, swindle the tanner for some more stew or whiskey.
He could even get a look at that shepard again.
He cleared his throat, and responded. “Thanks, Tilly. I’ll head over now. Save me some stew, will ya?”
“Even if Pearson messes it up?”
“Even if he overcooks it. That's what whiskey is for.”
Tilly laughed, and walked away. Arthur moved to put on his old hat, but caught a glance of himself in his tiny mirror. His beard had grown bushy - Dutch had kept him busy these last few days. Hosea could wait a few minutes for a man to shave, right? Plus, arthur wanted to look  presentable for a new client, or partner in crime, or whoever this foreman was. Nothing else to it.
Nothing at all.
Ares was chomping at the bit when Arthur got to him. The war horse, he had learned, was an impatient one, wanting to run amok at nearly all hours of the day. This was a bit of a nuisance, but good for the ride ahead. It was quite some distance to the ranch, over flat plains. Ares would have the time of his life galloping there - and he did. The ride was a good deal shorter thanks to the horse’s restlessness.
By the time Arthur arrived, it was evening, a golden light bathing the Heartlands. Hosea was perched and waiting by the big barn on the south end, talking to some crusty ranch hand who looked more like a criminal than most of the Van der Linde crew. Hitching his horse, Arthur could hear some of Hosea’s nonsense - the man was spinning some yarn about the supposed “layoffs” the gang had endured up north, a part of their grand cover story.
“Now, being short on money, many of us are forced to sell some of our most precious belongings, and if you tell me you have a market for such things, then we would be much obliged-”
“I buy and sell ‘lost’ things, mister. How they got lost is none of my concern, and I pride myself on my…discretion. I hope I can depend on yours,” the man replied.
Hosea seemed taken aback, but recovered quickly. Noticing Arthur, he waved, and brought him towards the ranch hand.
“Arthur, my boy, this kind man is Seamus, he’s the foreman here at Emerald Ranch. He has promised to turn our treasures that we find around here into gold, isn’t that right, Seamus?”
The foreman nodded curtly, and set a box down on the small counter he had built up.
“Jewelry, watches, even teeth, if you gottem,” he said. “Your old man here has given me quite a few things already.”
“That I have,” Hosea gloated. “And he paid a good price. I’d love to stay around and chat, but I have some affairs to attend to back at home. The wife must be furious by now!” he patted Arthur on the back, a shit-eating grin on his face as he turned. He was off, kicking dust in the air on horseback within the minute.
Turning to the foreman- Seamus - again, Arthur took some of his findings out of his bag. A few pocket watches, one gold tooth, nothing much to show.
“Well, these are fine material - platinum too? Hefty profit. A shame these bastards lost these things,” Seamus remarked.
“Shut up, you know what this is about,” arthur replied.
“You sure you don’t wanna buy anything from me? I have a nice assortment - moonshine too. Rings, necklaces, some nice things to bring back to a lady…”
“Boss man know you’re doing this?” Arthur asked.
“Jesus, no, he’d skin me alive. Or worse,” Seamus whispered, “take a cut of the profit. Now that we can’t abide. The missus doesn’t mind though.”
Arthur paused. Did this slime of a man mean…Diana? The shepard?
“Oh, so you’ve seen her?” Seamus asked, smirking. Arthur was acutely aware of his freshly shaved face. Should he have left some stubble on?
“...Yeah. saved her a few days ago from some of them O’Driscoll’s," Arthur replied.
“Oh, well at least you ain’t lookin for Miriam,” Seamus said. This was confusing, now - was Arthur supposed to know this other name?
“I probably shouldn’t ask, but….who’s that?”
“You're not from around here, so I’ll answer - for a price. Normally we keep this sort of thing on lock. For just a few dollars for a poor, poor underpaid foreman, you too can know-”
“For god’s sake man, tell me before I put a bullet in your head and take my business somewhere else!” Arthur spat the words out. He moved to grab his gun.
“Jesus sir, fine, I’ll throw in some moonshine too…” Seamus grabbed a bottle.
“Gimme that, ya clown. Now spill, like two men talking over drinks ought to.” Arthur said, grabbing the bottle and taking a sip. The shine was flavored - something sweet, like apple cider. Arthur had tasted stronger beer.
“And the money-ugh never mind,” Seamus looked dejected, and a bit afraid. Arthur liked his business partners that way - made ‘em less likely to squeal.
“So, Miriam is the daughter of Mister Eugene Wegner. She’s Missus Diana’s stepdaughter, and a fine, pretty girl. She had suitors from allllll over the Heartlands, and some from Rhodes too. One even came from Saint Denis. But she decided to shack it up with one of the farm boys in that old abandoned saloon. Now, Mister Eugene? He was never the same after that. Man went on a rampage like no other. He was never like to marry off Miss Miriam, and shot that farmhand dead when he caught them...copulating.”
Arthur hadn’t anticipated this much of a story. But then, he hadn’t expected to save a woman who turned out to be the missus of the ranch. He had to hide how invested he was - he felt like Mary-Beth must feel, everytime she read one of her novels.
“...okay? And then?”
Seamus snickered. “Take another sip, this here’s a doozy.”
“Fine,” Arthur said. The moonshine’s sweetness exploded in his mouth. It was still weaker than an old drunk taking a swing.
“Now, Missus Diana came back from some hunting trip to find the carnage, and threw a goddamn fit. Pulled some new fancy bow and arrow and aimed at Mister Eugene. Half the ranch drew on her before she put the bow down. Now, I don’t know the rest of the specifics, but after that day? Miriam’s been locked in that big ol’ house, and Missus Diana doesn’t sleep in the house except for one week, every month. Mister Eugene shouted something to the effect of ‘you wanna act like a savage, sleep outside like one!’ to her last time she tried to go in,” he continued.
“Now, I ain’t no gossip, or a snitch, but seeing as you seem interested, i’ll tell you myself; stay on Mister Eugene’s good side. Whatever kinda bandits you and your old man are, don’t steal from here. The man is a mean old bastard, sure, but he…there’s other stuff too. He’s a time bomb.”
Arthur nodded again, though he was left with plenty more questions. Before he could ask any of them, a big black lab came bounding down the lane, barking up a storm. Pluto.
A small buggy came barreling down the lane, almost running over the dog, who whimpered and spirited away. Behind the buggy, tethered to its back, was a magnificent horse, the same blue roan color as Ares.
“Woah!” the driver shouted. He was an old man, mutton-chopped. His face was a sour one, despite the steed he had in tow.
“Mister Wegner! New horse?” Seamus shouted back.
Wait. Was this man…
“That’s Mister Eugene. Be polite, man,” Seamus whispered to Arthur. “And put that damn moonshine away!”
“Meet my newest stallion, a horse - hic - fit for a king!” Eugene said. He was clearly drunk - it was a wonder he’d gotten back from Valentine in one piece. The stallion whinnied behind him. He didn’t look too thrilled with his new rider.
“Anwho’sthisfeller?” Eugene slurred, glancing briefly between arthur and seamus.
“This here’s a man lookin’ for goods, Mister Wegner. I was just about to send him over to Cripps to see if he wants any,” Seamus replied. Quick thinking, even though that wasn’t technically a lie.
“Great! Terrific! Have a good gander, sir! Now where’s my wife?”
The moonshine burned Arthur's throat at the question.
“W-what about her, Mister Wegner?” Seamus asked. Even he seemed nervous at the question.
“I’m gonna,” Eugene began, hiccuping as he spoke. “I shall have her tonight, a time for celebrating!” he leered.
A few things sunk in for arthur. While he’d known the woman- Diana - was married to this fool, it hadn’t dawned on him how much older Eugene was. The man must be at least 60 - and Diana was a young woman. She must be John’s age - and must’ve been even younger when she married the man. His stomach roiled, and he knew it wasn’t the damn moonshine.
Desperate to get out of the conversation, arthur murmured a goodbye to Seamus and rode down the lane to the store. Cripps was in the back, stirring the stew that was left.
“Hey, mister,” Arthur said, strolling up to the old man.
“Mister Morgan! The savior of sheep! Welcome back!” Cripps exclaimed. He too was clearly drunk, but a jolly one.
Before Arthur could respond, Cripps got a bit excited. “And have I got news for you, my friend!”
“Oh? About…”
“About your pelts, good man! I’ve made some fine things, you’ll love ‘em!”
Arthur tried to hide his disappointment, semi-successfully. The stew in the pot smelled delicious, but his stomach still churned with the thought of Diana and Eugene. He would’ve drank it away, if not for the fear of throwing it up. Damned moonshine.
He sighed, and gestured to Cripps.
“Let’s see ‘em then,” he said.
Some time later - it had to be an hour or more - Arthur sat atop Ares on a hill, east of the ranch. It really was a pretty spot, a glen - a good spot for hunting, if he had space on his horse. On the back of Ares sat a parcel. The old man Cripps had given arthur a grand tour of his tanning setup - complete with his plans on what to do with the gargantuan bear pelt arthur had given him.
“This thing is big enough to make 3 big coats,” Cripps had said, “but I’m loath to cut it all up like that! Maybe i could make it a wall-hanger for ya’!”
“Well, I’m sure that would look good, mister, but I’m not in the market for wall hangings. I’d have to have a wall, first,” Arthur replied.
“Well, then…how about a blanket then? In case you and your comrades get stuck up in the Grizzlies again.”
Normally, Arthur would have rejected such a thing - a blanket seemed like a luxury, given the shit that the gang had been up to lately. But feeling the heavy softness of the pelt, he caved. After all, Dutch was the one who’d said things were looking up for the gang, on the first day they settled onto their new camp. Who knew how long they’d be stuck here - may as well make Horseshoe Overlook feel like home.
“Sure,” he’d said. “Anything else you got for me, mister?”
“Well, I’ve got two gifts for ya. One’s from me, the other from the missus.”
Arthur’s heart skipped a beat as Cripps gave him the parcel that now adorned Are’s back.
“Don’t open them until you’re home. We like surprises, here mister Morgan. Hope you’re alright with that.”
And so Arthur sat atop the hill, a parcel at his back and a small moonshine bottle in his hand. As he took one final sip of the sweet stuff, he spotted a figure in the distance. It stood in a skirt and blouse before a gravestone, towards the train station.
He watched as the figure lit a small paper aflame, and let it burn on top of the gravestone.
Suddenly, she looked towards him, and appeared to squint, before waving. As the sun caught her hair, he knew instantly. The figure was Diana. He gave a small wave back, a sheepish one, and turned his horse. He would not even allow the setting sun to see his blush as he broke Ares back into a gallop.

Another jewel that may also have belonged to Henry VIII was described in Anne's inventory as 'a jewel in form of a ship of gold under sail with the words 'Amor et gratin cum verbo', & a woman at the helm.' Was this, perhaps, the jewel depicting a maiden in a storm-tossed ship which was comissioned for Henry by Anne Boleyn in order to signify her turmoil when she finally agreed to become his wife?
Bessie Blount: Mistress to Henry VIII (Norton, Elizabeth)
“For a present so beautiful that nothing could be more so (considering the whole of it), I thank you most cordially, not only on account of the fine diamond and ship in which the solitary damsel is tossed about, but chiefly for the fine interpretation and the too humble submission which your goodness hath used towards me in this case…”

Ode to Samuel Delany
Composed half-a-century ago, The Ballad of Beta-2 was a science-fiction vision of the future that speaks directly to our present.
Tumblr media
by Lavelle Porter
On April Fools’ Day, Samuel R. Delany will turn 81. These days he’s the lovable, bearded grandpa of American science fiction, but back in the 1960s Delany was a controversial young phenomenon in the field. He was born in Harlem in 1942, into a prominent black family that includes, among others, his aunts Sadie and Bessie Delany, famously known as the Delany Sisters, who were the subject of the best-selling book Having Our Say. As someone born in the 1940s, the specter of World War II looms over his early works. The Jewels of Aptor and The Fall of the Towers both imagine worlds in the aftermath of nuclear war. Like those novels, The Ballad of Beta-2 also seems to be a reckoning with what World War II wrought, including the horrors of the Holocaust and the United States’ descent into the anticommunist paranoia of the McCarthy era. We now live in a time when a former president—twice impeached but nevertheless a candidate for office in 2024, breaks bread with antisemitic, Holocaust-denying trolls. As genocidal rhetoric flourishes in public life, and people rush to embrace foolish superstitions and conspiracy theories on the web, it’s worth revisiting one of Delany’s old SF novels which offered stark warnings about the future’s return to the past.
Words like “prodigy” and “precocious” dominate the commentary on Delany’s early novels. Understandably so. The Jewels of Aptor, his first science fiction novel, was published when he was just 20 in 1962. He would publish eight more novels before he turned 30, among them The Ballad of Beta-2, first published in 1965 as an “Ace Double” with Emil Petaja’s Alpha Yes, Terra No!. In the foreward to A, B, C: Three Short Novels (Vintage Books, 2015), an omnibus volume containing three of his earliest works, Delany describes how he fired off The Ballad of Beta-2 in the middle of writing the epic trilogy The Fall of the Towers, just another example of how ridiculously productive young Delany was. He is perhaps best known for the genre-bending bestseller Dhalgren (1975), and for his sexually adventurous non-fiction writing like Times Square Red, Times Square Blue (1999). Even as “minor” Delany, The Ballad of Beta-2 contains the markers of his literary greatness: Vivid imagery, high-concept ideas, and a propulsive narrative.

LOST BETS AND SKIRTS
Tumblr media
In order to get money for the camp. The men and woman in the gang made a bet against each other that whatever group could con/rob the most out of people by the end of the week would pick what they did with the money raised but they also got to pick the punishment for the other group’s failure to collect.
The bet was won by the women and they decided that the men all had to wear skirts for the next week and that all of them had to go out of camp at least 5 separate times with the skirts on and they couldn’t just sit around camp and wait for the week to be over.
So all the men had to go into town to buy a skirt to wear for their punishment, using their own money. In the end Dutch ended paying for everyone as he was feeling very generous. But anyway, picture a group of men going into a boutique looking at skirts and trying them on. It was a sight to see.
Also, the women managed to get them all together at the end of the week and took a picture of all of them together in their skirt. Ms Grimshaw later on got a frame for the picture and she often walks by it and laughs, thinking back to that week.
Tumblr media
WHAT TYPE OF SKIRT THEY GOT
Arthur let Charles pick out his skirt, as he was too overwhelmed by all the choices. Charles ended up pick out a light brown skirt for him. It was simple and Arthur can easily move around in it.
Bill got a simple dark brown skirt that flowed way too much in the wind and he may or may have not accidentally flashed some people because I fell like the man hates wearing underwear.
Charles got a purple skirt with a nice lace detailing on it. He looks magnificent in it. He looked like a god, even. Arthur spent almost his whole week drooling over Charles.
Dutch being Dutch got a really nice expensive black skirt with a nice red jeweled pattern. He also got the skirt tailored to him because he is Dutch.
Hosea got a blue skirt that reminded him of something Bessie would have worn. It made him feel powerful, and he rocked that shit.
John and Javier got matching black skirts. They both rocked them and in the end, the two started to wear skirts around camp 24/7 unless they were some place cold.
Kerian got a simple blue skirt that matches his shirt. Initially, Kerian was very self-conscious about the way he looked in his skirt, but over the week, he slowly became more and more confident.
Lenny manage to find an orange skirt that looked similar to his orange handkerchief. He mostly liked the experience, but he hated the attention that just wearing a skirt caused.
Micah got a red skirt because he loves the color red. He decided to fuck it if I’m gonna make a fool out of myself. At least I look good. So he fully committed to his art and got the whole womanly shebang and for his week he dressed up as a woman and robbed way too many men blind.
Pearson picked out a simple black skirt. He spent most of his week in the saloon with the others. He enjoyed the skirt, and it reminded of his time in the navy. So when he got drunk, he spent his time telling stories of his time in the navy.
Sean got a green skirt that matched his hat perfectly. He also got it because it has ruffles at the bottom of it. Sean flashed multiple camp members on purpose as a joke.
Swanson was surprisingly fine with the whole ordeal. He got a black skirt and rocked that shit. Now he only really wears pants when it’s cold and those are under the skirt.
Tumblr media
THEIR FEELINGS ON THE PUNISHMENT
9/10. Arthur thought he would absolutely hate the whole experience, but he enjoyed it. He also thought it was funny that he was a man in a skirt chasing down his bounty. As no one really thinks that they would ever be chased down, tackled, and hog-tied by a man wearing a skirt. Also during this time his wallet kept fluctuating as he kept buying Charles fancy drinks then would go and caught a bounty to get back the money he spent on Charles.
8/10. Bill was surprisingly fine with having to wear the skirt. He actually enjoyed it, but he would never tell anyone. But sometimes when he’s a little too much to drink, he slips it on and struts around the camp in it. But during his week he went out more than the 5 required times and he surprisingly enjoyed everyone’s eyes being on him. Also, the first time he wore it to the saloon in Valentine, some drunk made fun of him and he beat the absolute shit out of him. So when he continued to show up throughout the week with the skirt on, no one dared to say anything to him.
10/10. Charles liked the whole experience. On the occasion he does wear the skirt as it is the perfect thing to wear when the weather is warm. Charles didn’t mind the attention he got while wearing the skirt, as it was mostly people completing him or buying him drinks.
7/10. Dutch thought he would hate it but ended up really like the whole experience. He kept the skirt and wore it on occasion around camp when it was hot as hell out as it had a nice breeze and he didn’t feel so hot and stuff down there. Dutch also had the thought when he was wearing the skirt and people would look at him funny that at least he’s wearing something and not going around butt ass naked.
7/10. Hosea enjoyed the experience and took it as a good lesson on women’s beauty standers. It had a downside, and he wasn’t able to con as many people as he would have liked due to the skirt, but he still managed to get a good bag in the end. At the end of the week, he took it to Bessie’s grave as a gift.
10/10. Javier really enjoyed it. He enjoyed the attention that came along with the skirt as well. He picked up many ladies and men in the saloon due to his skirt and his charm. Like I stated, he is only ever found in a skirt when he’s at camp. He finds it nice and comfy. He also likes how he is defying societal norms.
8/10. John enjoyed it. The whole experience brought something out in him. He started to care more about his appearance and his clothes. The experience also brought out a more feminine side in John, but if anyone dared questioned or asked him about it, he would threaten them with his knife. His thoughts were definitely along the line of if you say the wrong thing about me and my knew found femininity, I will cut your balls off and shove them down your throat.
6.5/10. Like I said, Kerian was initially very self-conscious about the way he looked in the skirt, afraid that one of the others would make fun of him despite being in the same boat. As the week went on, he slowly found confidence not a lot, but some was better than none. Due to this whole experience, Kerian started to feel more comfortable with himself and the way he presented himself. He started presenting more androgynous. Eventually, overtime he wanted to explore his feminine side beside wearing skirts around camp. So he managed to work up the courage to ask the girls how to do makeup. They were all happy to give him tips and tricks. In the end, Kerian never thought a stupid bet would make him more comfortable with himself.
7/10. Lenny is very chill and enjoyed his time in the skirt. Like I said earlier, Lenny didn’t really like the attention when he wore his skirt out for the designated 5 times. The only times he was fine with the attention was when a surprising amount of women kept buying him drinks. After the week was up, he cut the skirt up into different sizes and uses them as rags.
10/10. Micah has commitment to his craft. He shaved his facial hair off; he got one of the girls to do his makeup. He made up a fake back story and perfected his voice, which he surprisingly sounded like a woman. Some of the guys thought the girls brought another woman back to camp, only to find that it was Micah. The whole camp, even Swanson and Pearson, went to see Micah put his plan in action. They watched from a far as Micah played damsel in distress and robbed man after man. He ended up with a bag full of goods. He also kept the git up and on occasion when he’s in a good mood he’ll put it on and play damsel in distress.
8/10. Pearson enjoyed the whole experience but he won’t tell anyone that. While Pearson was out, he blended in well and never got any comments on the skirt. Also, like I said earlier, when he got drunk, he told stories of his time in the Navy. Let’s just say the gang found out how much of a freak Pearson was when he was younger. 0/10 the gang will never let him get drunk enough for story teller Pearson to come out.
9/10. Sean loved it. He still wears his skirt around camp. He doesn’t give two fucks what others have to say about him and his skirt. He went out his required 5 times, but other than that, he mostly lounged around camp. When he was out, he found that he was mostly ignored. Most people thought it was a cultural thing, so they didn’t say anything.
10/10. Swanson throughly enjoyed it but he was also drunk half the time, so that also probably added to his willingness. He spent more than his 5 required times out of camp. He never got questioned on why he was wearing a skirt as people just thought it was a religious garment. Also, like I said earlier, Swanson now only wears a skirt, but when it’s cold, he wears pants underneath his skirt.
Tumblr media
EXTRA
Jack got jealous after 2 days that everyone was wearing a skirt, so he convinced Abigail to take him to go get one. He got a black one to match John’s.
10/10. Jack loved it and he, like his father, wears the skirt around camp all the time. I feel like he also continued this into his adulthood as a way to honor his father. But during the week, Jack went out with John a couple of times to show off that he was matching with his daddy. While Jack was out with John, he saw his father threaten and beat the shit out of a couple of people that made comments about the two of them. John then made Jack promise to never tell Abigail and Jack stuck to his promise and never told his mother.
Trelawny was just visiting for a week and the week he came was the week the punishment happened. Trelawny decided eh why not, even though I’m not a part of this I will participate. He went in to town with the others ended up getting a really nice red skirt with black lace detail on it.
10/10. Trelawny loved the whole experience. He also very much enjoyed the attention that he got when he was out. He also enjoyed how many men and women bought him drinks throughout the week, but as pay back he would do magic for them. I must warn you, when he gets too drunk his magic starts lacking, and he starts speaking French. So if you don’t speak French, I’m afraid that you’ll be very lost when he starts ranting.

“The Morgan Horses Sent To Japan” by H. A. Strohmeyer. Published 1920.

Bessie Baker 0224 & Moodna 04008 [x]
Jewell 036268 & Trumpeter 7206 [x]
Lucy Macdonald 04001 & Stockwood 7205 [x]
These Morgans were among the 11 that were all exported from the United States to Japan for the Emperor of Japan in 1920. They were acquired during the 1919 International Livestock Exposition in Chicago by Dr. Issa Tanimura, during his visit to the , who reportedly claimed that there could hardly be a better horse for the Japanese cavalry. The influence of the Morgan on the horses already extant in Japan could be observed during the war in Manchuria (c. 1932) and during World War II. After the war ended, the bulk of horses in Japan were dispersed throughout the country to be used for agricultural purposes

How did it go from “omg shipping real people is CRAZY and CREEPY” to people shipping him with Amita and Sujaya here….
Anyone want to become the token shipper for Ben and Danielle? She does call him Shadow Zaddy. And she’s actually single. #Banielle
Ok so I decided to make a list with pros and cons of Benny and them other people we talked about today! THE SHIPS!
Bulianne; so far the only confirmed one and over, dead and buried as of now, hated by absolutely everyone in the fandom and their mothers. Has an official theme song - Here Comes The Sun. Pros - twin flame left the door to Benny's real life/persona ajar and was constantly giving us shit to do/talk about during pandemic and they deff deserve one another! Also finally confirmed to them old fans that Benny is not gay and has the straightest bad taste in women... Cons - we gonna need a bigger boat for that x.x CORALSRATING - two and a half wishes out of three
Tumblr media
Boriana; also mostly hated by the fandom, workplace romance. Courtesy of 👑! Pros - made Benny ugly cry and hump old TV in his MV, will fiercely protect him when boy gets his raya age settings below 18, cause it's them girls fault they are underaged! Cons - she is only 2% goat milk, according to twitter, and I like my goat cheese full fat ;c CORALSRATING - 11% Spanish and 1% it won't end up well
Tumblr media
Bessie; current work affair, eternal lovers and forget the twin flame sunshine bullshit cuz Jessie is the sunshine and probably the female pirate too! Pros - they could sell more Shadow and Bone me Daddy seasons with their love, shippers make cute joint headstones fan arts for them, Benny likes, we laugh. Cons - Jessie could do way better than Beyyn, their shippers terrify me, older step-brother vibe from Benny, The Activist Stink. CORALSRATING - six seasons and a movie
Tumblr media
Bemita; we make the shit as we go! some are for it, some are against. Overall quite niche. Pros - she has very nice shiny hair and some Bulgari jewels! Cons - Benny clearly ain't the biggest fan and thinks himself as having the high ground, per usual. CORALSRATING - chub-chub, because it's never gonna happen
Tumblr media
Beaya; I made this one! Pros - she is an underrated beauty and the most age appropriate for Benny in the Hungarian wilderness. Cons - the name I made up for them is apparently a model of running shoes ;c CORALSRATING - momma would like this one
Tumblr media
Belahan; boys do like to work out together *Lucille Bluth would wink here*, lotsa comments #thenotificationssquad... Pros - DL would be happy? maybe? they seems to be into the same women (see certain NY model...) Cons - they were working out together but Benny still has them noodle legs, what about Alex and Julian? CORALSRATING - two Michelin star aubergines
Tumblr media
Banielle; credit to ye lovely muffin! Pros - she is cute and IRISH!!! Cons - she went to Trinity (screeching noises) and has wrong idea about what kind of man should be called zaddy. Apparently is single which is a big turn off for Benny Boy. CORALSRATING - grand

The Secret Bristol Girl; she is absolutely cute, redhead and a lil bit hippie. Math teacher who also likes astronomy OR astrology, accounts vary! Has a cat, probably a Siberian one <333 Pros - close to momma, she is a secret as Benny likes. Cons - has a cat and probably not ready to be Benny's baby momma yet. I think I made her up to be too good for our boy ;c he does not even deserve a made up girl x.x CORALSRATING - one DM sighting
Ok that's all for today! What other pairings ye want me to judge? What others should I add? That was so fun!

AMPHIBIA: SEASON 2B SPECULATION
So! Since ‘tis the season to be jolly, we have new confirmation from the creator of Amphibia himself, Matt Braly!!! He’s given out the Episode titles for all of Season 2B as a Christmas gift, and has confirmed that the episodes aren’t done enough for a trailer. You can find the video link here.
Now I’m giving you a warning! These will contain spoilers and discussion for Season 2B. If you are trying to avoid spoilers, I suggest leaving now! If you’re cool with spoilers and speculation, stay for the ride!
SPOILERS AHEAD FOR AMPHIBIA: SEASON 2A!!!
END OF SEASON 2A - WHERE ARE WE IN THE SHOW?!
Currently, the last episode of Season 2 we’ve had was “A Day at the Aquarium,” with Anne and the Planters are heading to Wartwood for the Harvest and to collect the Calamity Box to take to the Temples. Marcy has a sketchy deal with King Andrias offered, and Sasha and Grimes haven’t been checked up on since “Toadcatcher” where they said they’re going to storm Newtopia.
We have new information on the Calamity Box with the three temples, and even more information on the colours representing the three girls. The Robot following Anne and the Planters to Newtopia (revealed as “Frobo” by Disney Amphibia promotional game) is still stuck at the edge of Newtopian Land, not entering the water as seen in the first minute of “Lost in Newtopia”. It’s still unknown what the glowing coloured eyes represent, since we’ve only seen them twice: Anne’s eyes with “Handy Anne,” and Marcy’s with “Marcy at the Gates” when she saved Sprig.
The Season 2 opening with the new animated sequence of the Sasha vs. Anne sword fight seems to take place in the location of one of the temples. In the end credits, the temple in the leftmost corner with the fallen pillars seem to be where Sasha and Anne are fighting as the sequence zooms out to Marcy holding the Music Box.

This means that Sasha and Anne are going to have a altercation at one of the temples, seemingly at the Third temple, since that location is the closest one to the Volcano temple. It could even be during the return to Newtopia, and Sasha and Grimes try to seize Newtopia like the Fire Nation did with Omashu. And we know the order of the temples from King Andrias’ book from “A Day at the Aquarium.”

It’s unclear which temple represents what jewel, but from the image above seems to infer that it goes in the order of green, blue, and finally pink. Meaning Marcy, Anne and Sasha. From a visual perspective with shape language, that correlation of people with the temples would make sense! Since the first temple seems more like a pyramid which usually has booby traps and requires wit (Marcy) to solve it. The Second Temple is represented by an arch, giving a sense of safety and welcoming. (Heart)
The Volcano...? Definitely Sasha.
No more information on Sprig’s mom or the things in the Castle’s basement (the Jelly Ghosts, the Chained Moss Men, or even the torn painting of young Andrias’ with the Toad and Frog).
That’s where we are in the hiatus. So now let’s dive into the episode titles.
SPOILERS AHEAD FOR AMPHIBIA: SEASON 2B!!!
EPISODE TITLE SPECULATION
These are all my ideas and speculation based off of the episode titles. These are not confirmed summaries, loglines or events of the episodes.
S02E11 - Night Drivers/Return to Wartwood
211A - Night Drivers: This episode seems to mainly be a returning travel episode. I don’t know what we’re getting here, maybe a nightmare creature? Or perhaps an actual nightmare? My guess is something with Anne and Hop Pop since they’re the only "Riders” who know how to drive Bessie. I do expect some talk or at least mention of Frobo since it’s outside the Newtopian area.
211B - Return to Wartwood: It’s here! The return to Wartwood! I don’t think Hop Pop will immediately unearth the Music Box and show it to the kids to give an exposition dump. I think this will talk more about people catching up with the Planters and asking how is Newtopia. Some shenanigans happen, maybe a monster, but I see this being kinda lowkey too. Perhaps the Calamity Box plot at the end as a short stinger, but nothing more really.
S02E12 - The Shut-In!: Halloween Special
212 - The Shut-In!: This episode is already out. It doesn’t fit in continuity-wise and could be placed anywhere in the season. There’s not really much to speculate upon, especially within the season. The only real speculation I see is that Hop Pop probably hasn’t told the kids yet, because I don’t think they would be as calm as they were in this episode if Hop Pop explained.
S02E13 - Ivy on the Run/After the Rain
213A - Ivy on the Run: We haven’t seen Ivy this season. The only episodes the audience is reminded of her are “Hopping Mall,” where Sprig bought that ninja pole for her that broke; and, the Halloween special. I think this episode is a follow up episode to Sprig and Ivy’s relationship, perhaps she feels as though Sprig is leaving her again for the Temples arc and is upset by that. Or some shenanigans with her mom and a new suitor for her, since that’s what originally happened for Sprivy in her Intro episodes. I see the resolution being about long distance relationships and how it can be difficult, but they trust each other and they’ll work through it.
213B - After the Rain: This. This seems like the perfect episode for Hop Pop to talk about the music box. Stormy nights are perfect impeticis for reveals and exposition dumps. I see this as an episode where Hop Pop is trying to say his “sources” can’t seem to get the box back because of the rain, or something. Anne freaks out and is constantly bothering Hop Pop. She pushes him to a point where he cracks, and explains everything about the Music Box. Or he just tells them because he thinks that if they know what they’re doing, they should know.
Or a third idea is that it is more like “The Storm” from Avatar: The Last Airbender where Hop Pop explains the horrors of the Music Box to the kids, while King Andrias’ explains to Marcy how he utilised the Music Box and how he’s lied about his age and he’s actually centuries of centuries older than he says. Then King Andrias’ reveals his deal for Marcy, which I believe is stealing the music box from Anne, so he can rescue the people trapped within the portrait from the other worlds.  She may not actually steal the Music Box until the Third Temple, where all the gemstones have been recharged. How does Marcy benefit from this? I have no clue. But he’s telling Marcy this because he has to stay to help Newtopia, or because he wants an ally in a time of need.
And Anne ends up saying, “We have to tell Marcy, and warn her!.” But Hop Pop says that they can’t since she may follow the King. A new reversal of Anne having to choose to use her head instead of her heart, which we see her struggle with in “A Day at the Aquarium.” This perhaps starts an arc where she’s acting similarly to Sasha in terms of peer pressure tactics and gaslighting to avoid Marcy learning the truth.
S02E14 - The First Temple
214 - The First Temple: This episode is a freaking two-parter! An introduction to the mythology of the Temples. Discussing the location, Act One is travelling there. Marcy talks to Anne about Wartwood, and maybe a bit more into her own family life. I see Sasha, I think we’ll get hints of Marcy’s conflict from her deal with the King, their only way home. But at the same time, Anne is having her conflict about telling Marcy the Frog side of the Music Box, after learning the secrets Hop Pop reveals.
Act Two is arriving at the Temple, and entering the Temple using Marcy’s big brain skills. Act Three is recharging the Green Gemstone and learning the location of the Second Temple. Something I do find interesting about this is the glowing eyes subplot adjacent to the Music Box. Will it somehow affect Marcy? Will she lose her “Wit”? Or does this unlock a new power within her or something? We’ll see!
S02E15 - New Wartwood/Friend or Frobo?
215A - New Wartwood: I do think this has been a while coming. Wartwood has had issues with accepting change and differences. Like in “Toad Tax,” where Hop Pop makes an off-hand joke that the town’s Motto is “Slow to accept, and even slower to respect.” Even though that is not okay, there have been plants for a change to Wartwood. Redoing and improving on themselves. Or it could just be a plot where the Mayor has to redo everything in Wartwood and making it fancy hotel, and the Plantars have to stop him. Then creates a moral of change is within, not outside.
215B - Friend or Frobo?: Okay, a Frobo episode! We haven’t talked about Frobo, and don’t even know its name from the show itself. This is probably a big mythology reveal. In case anyone doesn’t know, this robot is seemingly inspired by the one from Hayao Miyazaki’s “Laputa: Castle in the Sky.” There are a lot of theories, but I think Marcy’s curiosity would want them to follow Frobo, but her head will say something against that. Anne’s “Heart” will tell her to follow the Frog Robot and lead them to a new area of knowledge unknown previous.
S02E16 - Toad to Redemption/Maddie and Marcy
216A - Toad to Redemption: A possible Sasha episode???? Whomst? Whenst?? Since Season 1, I basically expect minimal Sasha episodes. Sasha and Grimes having two episodes in one season?? What?!
But “Toad to Redemption” is an interesting title. Perhaps Grimes or one of his remaining soldiers of Wanda and Percy change their minds? Or perhaps Anne and Marcy encounter one of the Toads that split up with Grimes post-Reunion. And they’re trying to learn to combat their racist beliefs of Frogs being less than Toads. A bit more of a Hop Pop episode since it deals with moving on from traditions that hinder you, but also realising the things that are necessary. I think the latter is more likely, but a Sasha and Grimes episode would work really well, especially this deep into the season.
If this is a Sasha and Grimes episode, I do believe that Yunnan will come back and try to get payback for them defeating her. And getting Grimes would be her “Toad to Redemption.”
216B - Maddie and Marcy: Yas! Creepy goth-like girl with a sunshine klutz. I think this is going to be a more fun episode after the heavy stuff in the previous segment.
S02E17 - The Second Temple/Barrel’s Warhammer
217A - The Second Temple: Temple Number Two!! The one for Heart. I think this one deals more with the idea of “Pure Hearted”. Therefore, I think that Anne is holding in the secrets of the Music Box, not making her “Pure of Heart” and therefore will have to tell Marcy. She reveals the information here, and Marcy tells her she can trust her, but she doesn’t reveal her deal with the King.
217B - Barrel’s Warhammer: Who is “Barrel”??? Seems like a new side gag character like The Curator or The Theatre Troupe. I have no idea what Warhammer means, either a literal Hammer for War, or it’s the game with the miniature objects.
S02E18 - Bessie and MicroAngelo/The Third Temple
218A - Bessie and MicroAngelo: I haven’t even watched the episode or seen the descriptor, but I know that this is going to be the cutest episode to ever exist on television and I absolutely am here for it. Perhaps on their way to the Third Temple, MicroAngelo is feeling down on his accomplishments as a snail, and sees Bessie as a mentor. I think the episode last season “Children of the Spore” will come back, since the mushroom still lives on that bug. So Bessie and MicroAngelo will save the day!
218B - The Third Temple: I am absolutely terrified for this episode. Much like with Infinity Train: Book 1 with two very specific episodes, and just as a general rule of writing, when you begin with a segment that is happier, it highlights and accents the horror and angst. Especially because this seems to be an episode where Sasha is necessary since she’s the last colour/gemstone.
S02E19 - The Dinner/Battle of the Bands
219A - The Dinner: This episode would make sense. Immediately upon seeing the title I thought of an Adventure Time episode, S10E05 - Seventeen, where a group of characters thought to be gone return at a party. Upon further development, I believe this would be a banquet to celebrate the recharging of the Music Box and returning Anne and Marcy home. Unsure about where Sasha is at this point, but she exists and they’ll most likely find her to get her home as well.
219B - Battle of the Bands: Now this is absolutely bonkers level of random. The penultimate episode of Season 2 is a Battle of the Bands???? The only person that can play an instrument is Sprig, and the only one that has really been seen dancing is Anne.
The only real idea I have for this is that it does what “Anne of the Year” did last season, where it wrapped up the character arc, and the plot surrounding that, but the actual plot is what will get touched upon in the finale. “Anne of the Year” resolved the plot of Anne being a stranger to Wartwood, which was the whole season’s conflict. While the finale, “Reunion” dealt with Sasha and the Toads. So I think “Battle of the Bands” will resolve Anne’s arc of being the Heart, and the finale will deal with the plot.
S02E20 - True Colors: 24-Minute Finale
220 - True Colors: This is a very interesting title. Since we know that the three girls represent three colours, that probably would mean a clash of them. This is probably where the full culmination of all the plot threads come into play. (The Music Box, King Andrias, the stuff in the basement, Sasha and Grimes, Sprig’s Mom, Marcy, and even Frobo) The title could also refer to a truth being revealed, with someone speaking their true colours.
I have no thoughts on the season finale so far, but I do hope this will be as satisfying as “Reunion” or more so. My expectations are super high! I’ll probably update more on my thoughts either when the trailer releases for 2B or the week of the finale airing.
END OF SPOILERS AND SPECULATION!!
That ends the speculation for 211 to 220 of Amphibia! Who knows when the episodes are releasing! (Matt says around February or March 2021! Which is a couple of months away!!!)
Let me know what you think and if you have any thoughts, ideas, responses to the speculation! I’m more than happy to hear you out!
