♡ ~ HOBBIT TRAUMAS (AND HOW YOU TAKE CARE OF THEM) ~ ♡ (4 Hobbits X Reader Preference)
a/n: No one would escape an adventure like the Fellowship had unscathed, especially not if you were an innocent, good-hearted, fun-loving hobbit.
My take on the traumas the 4 hobbits would have after the adventure, and how you, reader, help them deal with that.
P.S. -This is my first-ever writing post in Tumblr... and also my first-ever posted fanfic-type-thing! It's just a bunch of headcanons right now - maybe I'll take one of the ideas and turn it into a drabble or something later. Feedback is the best thing ever, and I would love to get any that anybody has!
P.P.S. - Shoutout to @wordbunch, who's LOTR writings I absolutely adore, and whose post formatting I basically used as a cheat sheet, because I'm a totally clueless newbie. So thank you! I hope that wasn't out of line for me to borrow 😕
Frodo
Sometimes he can still feel the crushing weight of the ring pulling on his neck or weighing on his chest, and you catch him absentmindedly rubbing one of these spots
So you, you special person, find some excuse to give him a neck rub or a back rub
Because you absolutely cannot stand seeing him trying to hide his discomfort like this
You know openly calling him out on it will just remind him of all that happened to him, so you have become a Master of Subtlety and Distraction
Whenever you catch him staring into the distance, you know it is Time to Remove Frodo From His Own Head
So
Distractions ensue
Namely:
Surprise hugs
Randomly launching into stories or rants that you know he won't be able to help listening to
(Because the sound of your voice is not-so-secretly one of his favorite things and he will listen forever)
Offering to read to him (we all know this is Book Boy, so what better than having his favorite tales read aloud by you?? His favorite narrator??)
You make him cups of tea as he writes his book
When he sees you smiling in the doorway with a mug in one hand and the scent of his favorite leafy brew drifting out of it, it just makes his day because…well, you.
You just think of him too much and he can't handle it lol
Sam
Never
Ever
Ever
Try to put this poor boy around spiders
Ever
(yes I love this HC, idk who came up with it and I can’t remember where I saw it but it’s basically canon in my bran now)
He cannot stand them, not even in the garden anymore. You can see how he stiffens and twitches every time one of those ugly eight-leggers scuttles across his path and instantly know how much restraint he's using not to kill it on the spot.
Spider in the house? It's all you, Y/N
You know he would try to face it down for you and you alone
But you can't stand seeing him go all cold and shaky at a little garden spider
So you often remove them before he can even notice because peace in the house is a nice thing to have
He also has alarming levels of self-doubt sometimes because of how he thinks he's misjudged things in the past
But luckily for him, he has you
You are there to support him and are always advocating that he is strong and makes solidly good choices
And you know what? You are his world, so he believes your every word.
He drinks those affirmations up like there is no tomorrow
And you are happy to continue on as his supplier till the end of days
Merry
Personal HC that when his arm is burned after stabbing the Witch-King, he gets phantom pains not dissimilar to Frodo's
It's almost like nerve damage - he'll be fine one minute and drop whatever he was holding the next, or his hand will start twitching in weird and sometimes disturbing (to him) ways
This is Mr. "Nothing-Bothers-Me-And-I'm-Fine", so naturally, it bothers him quite a bit that one of his appendages refuses to follow orders on a regular basis
It's something that he tries to hide from you - pretends it's not there, BARELY jokes about it.
If Merry Brandybuck ain't joking about it, you aren't either.
Sometimes you hear villagers mentioning it in hushed whispers, and you (badass) shut them up before a single one makes it back to Merry
Because you know that's what he'd do for you, so you absolutely do it for him.
And you know he secretly appreciates that you don't fuss over it, because he doesn't want to feel different or incapable. It helps, for him, that you treat him like just the same person he was before (because he is duh) and nothing has changed and he doesn't want or need to be coddled.
Not saying you do, but you might sometimes give this particular arm a little extra love and affection. Massaging his hand, tracing circles on his wrist, and just letting him know how dead cool you think his scar is.
Because, really…how many people have changed the fate of Middle Earth and have something to prove it?
Your Merry does, that's who. And you'll never let him forget how amazing and brave he is.
Pippin
Pippin is constantly awake in the dead of night
Because he's haunted by wild nightmares
And you're the first and probably one of the only people he would turn to for comfort
So guess what? You're up too, holding him close to you in the dead of night while he tries to calm down
Sometimes he tells you what the night mare was, sometimes he keeps silent and just wants to lay next to you. You know he'll tell you in his own time if it's right to.
This little hobbit is such an empath, he really took to heart EVERYTHING that happened on his journey
And he thinks that way too many things were exclusively his fault
Gandalf's death? His fault.
Merry getting hurt (because he got them separated and wasn't there)? His fault.
Boromir's death (because he didn't know how to fight)? His fault.
Again, you know better than to push, but you know the content of a lot of his nightmares revolves around his contributions being insignificant, his actions causing people's injury (or death), and how badly things could have played out because of him. It worries you, how much brainspace he gives to these things.
So you keep him close to you. I mean that both literally and figuratively. He's not shy about taking the physical comfort he needs (honestly I don't think he's aware of the concept of personal space), but he gets tripped up trying to talk about his own feelings
So you just give him his space, all the time he needs, and bottomless snuggles
Because contrary to what he thinks, a lot of things went right because of him, and you can't tell him enough how much he means to everyone (and you. most importantly, definitely you.)
Thank you for reading, if you made it down this far! I hope to post some actual writing soon, if I can find the time to sit down and put my Writer's Cap on. I am considering opening requests! At this point I don't know who will see this r how it's going to do, so we'll see how things work out :)

Hello ! Hope you're doing well
Could you please write a Legolas x Reader where the reader is playing piano (i know piano don't exist in LOTR lol so actually it could be any other instruments, I just prefer piano) during the Rohirrim party and Legolas fell even harder for them and thought it was the right time to confess his feelings (if you can also include that they've been distancing lately)
Hope it is not too much and take your time to write it!!
Legolas x Reader (The Pianist)
Tumblr media
A/N: Hope you like this, anon! Legolas is a little tricky to write, trying to get better with him and his characterization.
The Rohirrim were a merry bunch, there was no doubt about that. Despite the heavy losses in Helm’s Deep, the return of Gandalf and Éomer lifted their spirits greatly.
The celebration began as soon as they returned to Edoras with Merry and Pippin, cheerful and energetic as always. Legolas was unsure if he was dreaming but he swore the two hobbits were not as tall as they are now the last time he saw them.
After Gimli passed out, Legolas checked the great hall to find the remaining ones not yet intoxicated. There was Aragorn, who never took in more than he wanted to, Éowyn, who did not seem to enjoy these kinds of things. And there was you, playing the piano and surrounded by jolly men singing a song about falling in love.
If the theme of the party was to celebrate the recent victory and honor the fallen, then everyone was miserably failing, because they sure are not making any mention of the dead in their song.
As soon as the song came to an end, he approached you, narrowly avoiding the tipsy men about to bump into him and passed by others who lost their balance. You looked up at him and grinned.
“Hello, Legolas,” you greeted cheerfully. “Would you care to join me?”
“I am afraid I am not very skilled at the piano,” said Legolas. “I do, however, take pride in my skill at the harp. You never told me you played the piano.”
“You never asked.”
True enough, Legolas felt he did not know you well. He started off preferring your company over the others, especially Gimli’s, but in a strange twist of fate, he would not hesitate to call Gimli his best friend now. You were what he liked to call thoughtful; always thinking of the future, hoping for the best instead of the worst. He was no cynic even if the odds point to a complete destruction of the world and someone like you and your optimism was a refresher.
Legolas thought this was the right moment to start over. “We speak little to each other lately. Perhaps at dusk you could teach me how to play the piano and get to know each other more.”
“I would love to.”
-
“It’s not that hard, Legolas. You’re tensing up. Everyone has to start somewhere, and if I can do it, then so can you.”
Legolas could read basic piano sheets and memorised all the keys and what notes they represented,  but couldn’t hit the notes as well as he wished. One second, he’ll be playing fine but his fingers would suddenly tense and make it difficult for him to continue, abruptly ending his practice awkwardly.
“It happens to the best of us,” you insisted. “Besides, you’re lucky enough to have all your life to master the piano.”
Legolas chuckled. “That is true.”
And for the first time in what he guessed was weeks, Legolas felt light heartened, like he always was before you two grew distant from each other. He’s not sure how it happened but he was sorry those weeks were wasted with lack of interaction instead of getting closer to you.
“Are you seeing anyone?” Legolas asked.
“Not at the moment, no,” you said. “Why?”
“If you would let me, I would like to take you out for a ride at dawn. Edoras has a lot of lovely things to offer. We could talk about that and more about each other.”
You smiled. “That they do. I’d love to, Legolas. I think you're wonderful to be around.”

hii 💖
hope you had a lovely holiday & that you’re doing alright c: we have a new kitty her name is sweet pea she’s a little darling.
if I may request a human!reader courting an orc, one who’s decent enough that for their little spouse they don’t go after the other races if asked, getting introduced to their spouses friends ( like maybe the hobbit company or the lotr’s company ). I’m curious what you’d come up with an how things go— like orc spouse is trying their hardest to be on their best behavior but is awkward about it since they don’t often hang around the other races.
If that’s to confusing lol can I have you do headcanons or something with an orc trying to court human!reader?
( I’d prefer male or true gender neutral reader pretty please )
Hello, my dear!!! Sweet pea sounds adorable! What breed is she??
I hope you enjoy this little mix of drabble and headcanons, I went with a male reader and a lovely Himbo Orc:
Honestly, your orc husband is just so enthralled with you.
Can you say obsessed but in a hyper-healthy way, because yes he is? Anything you want, you got.
Being polite to everyone when you two are out in public? Done.
Not throwing a punch at a racist elf that had a thing or two to say about you two? He’ll do it, but just for you and not wanting to make you upset.
He initiated your courting with presenting you with a blade, crafted by his own hand with intricate runes in the handle that expressed his care for your heart.
Then it went sort of spiraling from there.
You noticed your windows were drafty and made an annoyed comment about it the next morning when he asked how you slept, how each wind gust sent a shudder down your spine. You came home from work to new windows installed and no mess.
He always wants to take care of you. Hard day at work? No worries darling, he’s cooking dinner and offering to rub your sore muscles after a nice bubble-bath he made for you.
“Welcome to the party-Oh,” Bilbo reared back, as if physically trying to stop himself from verbalizing his surprise. You had talked about bringing your spouse to this gathering, but he never expected an orc.
“Welcome, welcome,” Bilbo got over his surprise as your husband introduced himself, smiling politely and moving to the side to allow the two of you entry.
“Who’s at the door?” Ori called from the kitchen, exiting while holding a slice of bread- eyes wide and curious.
“(Y/n)! Welcome, laddie!” Bofur pushed past Ori, rushing to give you a hug whilst your husband stood awkwardly to the side.
“Who’s this?” Bofur said, noticing the tall fellow awkwardly admiring Bilbo’s knicknacks.
“That’s my husband, he doesn’t get out much,” You murmured lowly, trying to convey the silent message to take it easy on him.
Bofur gave a knowing nod before releasing you from the embrace and moving towards your husband. “Bofur, at your service!”
Your poor orc husband tried his hardest not to exert any strength as he shook the dwarf’s hand, seemingly holding his breath until Bofur moved on to go find Bombur in the pantry.
You two caught eyes and he gave a tentative smile, making you melt internally. He was trying so hard to not frighten anyone or worry you.
A himbo who drinks “I love my husband” juice on the DAILY

Boromir for the character ask?
Yessssss my man! Boromir my love!
First impression
First, first impression when I was like 11 and in theatres seeing LOTR for the first time? I couldn't tell him apart from Aragorn lol - it was two white dudes with the same hair cut and facial hair!
More serious note, like most, when I was young, I found him a bit unnerving and even frightening. Then it shifted to no strong opinion either way and now, obviously, that's vastly different.
Impression now
Love him so much. The older I get the more I sympathise with him and what he was going through. All he had on his shoulders and the stresses of his position and the expectations his people had of him to be their stalwart defender against Sauron. Let alone the whole Family Dynamic.
He is a complex, wholly imperfect person and I really appreciate that about him.
Favorite moment
In the movies I'm torn between the bit where he's teaching Merry and Pippin how to sword fight and every Fraught Conversation He Ever Had With Aragorn (there were so many).
In the books I love his response to the Balrog being: I'm Gonna Fight it.
Gandalf: We're not fighting it.
Aragorn: No, he's right, we should fight it.
Boromir: drawing my sword! it's gonna happen!
Idea for a story
Not sure I have one off hand - obviously every iteration of Boromir Lives is a godsend to us poor mortals.
ahufflepuffhobbit will know where this came from lol - but I am enamoured with a story idea of Boromir and Aragorn and Eowyn being a power couple.
Boromir lives, somehow. Schematics aren't important. Comes to Rohan, so Eowyn is like: Oh Wow Yes. Both of these men are A+
And obviously Boromir would be like "yeah girl you kill that orc. I'll hold your mead." Aragorn would be like, "the two people I love are MANIACS who enable each other."
Anyway, let Eowyn be queen of Gondor!! She deserves it and two hot husbands!!
Unpopular opinion
Not an evil or bad man? He has nothing to atone for?
idk - I'm not sure I have one when it comes to Boromir. There are people who don't like him, but my general opinions and read of the man aren't super out of the ballpark.
Is my opinion that Tolkien undermined his own narrative purpose about love etc. by killing Boromir unpopular?
(My one like, "yeah I get it and think it's important to the story," is that Boromir's death shows the reality of the great danger they are all in and that no one is coming out of this unscathed and he represents those who went to war and didn't come home. All those sons and brothers for whom people buried empty coffins. It's an important role that is needed in the story. But Tolkien, stop killing off only people who have "done wrong".)
Favorite relationship
Merry and Pippin, obviously. The three of them have a fantastic dynamic and clearly they need to hang out together more often.
I also love the complexity and manifold layers of his relationship with Aragorn and we were robbed by Tolkien in not having a chance to see how that would have unfolded over the course of the books.
Because there is Boromir before some of the dire, insane shit the Fellowship went through together and Boromir after - and I wish we got to see that and how it impacted/informed/changed his relationships with people.
Favorite headcanon
He and Gimli are Bros! The only reason I didn't have this as "favourite relationship" (because it is), is because it's not strictly speaking canon.
But yeah, I headcanon that they bonded super quickly during the Fellowship and are just absolute besties. Boromir is best man at Gimli's wedding to Legolas. It's all great for everyone

fic writer questions - thanks for the tags, @grey-gazania @curufiin and @thelordofgifs! Sorry that it took so long.
1. How many works do you have on Ao3? 51, though one is a compilation of unrelated short pieces.
2. What’s your total Ao3 word count? 89,680
3. What fandoms do you write for? At present just Silm and Lotr, but I'm hoping to participate in Yuletide this year and thinking about The Handmaiden, Hustlers, Swan Lake, and The Wolf Den as potential fandoms to offer
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
spirited away (outsider pov legolas/gimli)
post mortem (clinical/epistolary post-second kinslaying)
it takes a village (5+1 SoF and celebrimbor)
the straight road (epistolary legolas/gimli)
the stones wept (orpheus and eurydice au legolas/gimli)
It seems like my most popular pieces are L/G or sons of Feanor. And they ARE fun to write about, so I'm not complaining!
5. Do you respond to comments? Yes. But sometimes it takes an embarrasingly long time. Because I suck.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? haven (everyone dies) sister sister (everyone dies) if our deed faileth (everyone dies) woe unto worlds end (everyone dies)
Sensing a theme.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? coastin' (Elwing gets her pussy ate by her sexy husband and has an orgasm)
8. Do you get hate on fics? Lol I'm not relevant enough for that.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? Yes lol. I'm not sure what's meant by "what kind", but I've done F/F, M/M, F/M, F/M/M, M/F/F/F/F and a fairly big variety of kinks so like... most kinds?
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? No, and I'm not a huge reader of them, although I long for a Silm/Succ crossover
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? Yes! The lovely @camille-lachenille translated see it fall, child of war into French. You can read it here.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? No. I write very slowly and erratically, which I don't think would be fair to any potential cowriter.
14. What’s your all time favorite ship? Legolas/Gimli is a long term otp and one couple where I really can't see either side with anyone else (if they want to invite Aragorn or Eomer to join for a night I'm not opposed). Elwing and Earendil is another couple that I feel the same about (and I'm also defensive of them as a couple and genuinely see them as an example of some of Tolkien's most romantic writing). I also really like Celegorm/Orome for being basically perfect for my id.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? Eeeh. I'm really trying not to officially throw in the towel on any of my wips. It's just taking me a long time...
16. What are your writing strengths? Can I say smut? I think I'm quite good at setting, food, and clothing descriptions too.
17. What are your writing weaknesses? Any plot that's more complicated than "emotion in space" or "dick in hole". Also actually DOING the writing.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? I used to do it much more than I currently do. Now I feel like it breaks the flow of the story.
19. First fandom you wrote for? LOTR.
20. Favourite fic you’ve written? I've said it before but I was really pleased with how one of your girls came out and have reread it a couple of times since publishing. Actually I think I got some writers block after publishing it because I feel like I can't surpass it lol.
This was fun to do! I'm very late to the party so I think most people have been tagged, but if anyone else wants to do it then please go ahead and say I tagged you.

20 questions for fic authors!
I was tagged by the lovely @ugetelynx and @wisecrackingeric-2 <3 so sorry it took me so long to do this hfsgjhdj
1. How many works do you have? - currently posted on ao3 I have 57 works total. However I have almost twice as many wips it's bad
2. Ao3 word count? - 395,068 ..... I've got a wip that's almost over 100k but it's also been there for years so I doubt that'll change anytime soon
3. What fandoms do you write for? - of the fics I have on ao3, I have written for detroit become human, star wars, resident evil, assassin's creed, and the last kingdom. The fandoms I've written for that are not on my ao3 include lotr/the hobbit, bbc sherlock, bbc merlin, marvel, voltron legendary defender, percy jackson universe, and whatever the Carry On by rainbow rowell fandom is called. Most of those I will never ever write for again lmao
4. What are your top five fics by kudos? - In order:
Sapphire Moonlight (Tequila Sunrise) (Serennedy)
We Look So Good (Reed900)
Hold Fast, the Suns Will Rise (Stay) (Dincobb) (also, my first fic ever posted, and still the fic I hold most dearly in my heart to this day)
We Are Home (Hank and Connor family content)
Tomato Soup (Serennedy)
5. Do you respond to comments? - every single one. I'm obsessed with comments. I have them all saved and stored so I can reread them at any time. Thank you everyone who has ever commented I love you
6. What fic did you write the angstiest ending for? - I only write angst with a happy ending. But I did write You Should Have Killed Me for a friend's dbh x hunger games simulator result and it had an angsty ending by result of being a hunger games simulator.
7. What fic did you write the happiest ending for? - I write many fics w happy endings, but I personally think my fic series Din and Grogu | the Clan of Two Trilogy has the happiest ending because it happened against all odds. It's a fic about Din and Grogu's found family (before BoBF and Mando s3 came out, so it's not canon accurate) and it ends meaningfully to me.
8. Do you get hate on fics? - I have before, but it was all bullshit that showed me the person commenting didn't actually read what I wrote but chose to get mad at something that didn't exist. So it was discarded easily. Otherwise, I've had people try to tell me how to write things, but I ignore them all
9. Do you write smut? - yes. badly.
10. Crossovers? - I wrote a dincobb fic that was set in Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, with Din as Kassandra and Cobb as Anais. I also started a serennedy fic set in the detroit: become human universe but never got anywhere close to finishing it.
11. Ever had a fic stolen? - not that I know of lol.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? - I had someone ask to translate one of my fics, and I said yes, but I don't think they've done so yet, which is fine. Other than that, no. But I'd be honoured!
13. Ever co-wrote a fic before? - I started a dincobb fic with a friend years ago but we never got around to finishing it. Someday I still hope to.
14. What's your all time favourite ship? - that's genuinely impossible to pick tbh I've had so many that rewired my brain. top three are probably bagginshield, simarkus, and shadowzel, not in any particular order.
15. What's a wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will? - ehhhhh probably the klance fic I started when I was like 15. I don't go to voltron anymore and literally couldn't care less about it. In fact I actively hate it.
16. What are your writing strengths? - I've been told that I'm good at characterisation and plot. I think I suck at plot severely. As for characterisation, I study characters really hard and take a long time to write fics so they remain in character so I'm glad people appreciate that. I also prefer writing dialogue to anything else.
17. What are your writing weaknesses? - Writing. haha I mean exposition.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language? I have before, I find it fun but also intimidating.
19. First fandom you wrote for? - The Hobbit :') my first ever fic was a bagginshield fic I started when I was 13. I still mean to finish it someday.
20. Favourite fic you've written? - *sighs* I guess I should say Another Time. It was the most fun to write, and everyone's responses have made all the difficulties of writing it endlessly worth it. It took me months but I'm so happy I finished it, and I'm working on p3 rn I PROMISE. But again the fic I hold most dearly in my heart is still Hold Fast, the Suns Will Rise (Stay)

Nothing like seeing a LOTR fan who actually is a fan of the show be worried about us Haladriel shippers and women being fans of Charlie’s Sauron and thinking we actually need mental help for writing fics. :( I say this as someone who has sympathized with villain characters since I was a little girl (thanks to my Dad introducing me to the Universal Monster Movies, The Addams Family, the original “Dark Shadows”, everything Batman, and then for my Mom getting me into soaps where characters switch all the time from villains to heroes to back to villains all the time). I always saw them as more tragic, similar to how Guillermo Del Toro even talks about “his monsters”. I’ve mentioned before how I’ve been a LOTR fan since the movies came out when I was in high school and Sauron scared me so much in those, so I never thought I’d be able to relate to him (as I have OCD like he does) and that I would see how tragic his story actually is, and then ship him with Galadriel. Plus we’ve been in an age for TV and movies to redeem villains (think of “Cobra Kai” as that whole show is about doing just that to most of them) for years now so it makes it even more sad to me as I can see if he actually put in the effort he could’ve changed. Not with Galadriel as he thinks but on his own. So there’s nothing wrong in seeing this in Sauron even though it won’t happen or for us shipping him with her. Plus yeah Charlie is attractive but it’s also his acting that has helped to change how I feel about his character. So to suggest that we can’t like villains is just absurd. We know not to be with people like this in real life but villains usually are the best written and acted characters and they’re fictional. There’s no harm in it as we’re supposed to have fun while watching a show, movie, or reading a book. If anything I’m more worried this fan thinks we all need saving. LOL Just had to get that out and it wasn’t a post on here but a reply to a great LOTR Twitter account I follow. :)

Request: hi hello i am desperate for more faramir content 😩😩 i dont have much of a prompt other than maybe the reader is skilled in combat and most think thats improper but faramir is supportive and that makes the reader fall for him ? i love the idea of a very capable but perhaps jaded reader going soft for faramir 🥺 hope u have a great day!!
A/N: I am desperate for more Faramir content too 😢 He's my favourite but he's not as popular as the other men in lotr. I loved writing this piece, probs cause I too, am jaded and tired lol. It's not super fluffy but I do think it is quite romantic. I hope you like it!!!
Faramir x Reader

3.7k words
---
You swiped at the bead of sweat rolling down your temple and let out a long breath. The straw dummy slumped against the wooden pole, its head bent at an awkward angle. The sun was warm on the back of your neck and the breeze cool on your cheeks. The training courtyard was filled with the shouts and grunts of exertion and, above that, the clash and clatter of steel and wood.
You felt someone’s eyes on you and you turned, eyes hard and mouth set in a tight line. The small group of guards watching you looked away, their voices falling to an even quieter murmur. Something coiled in your stomach, hot and angry, and your grip tightened on the hilt of your sword. You turned back to your inanimate opponent and lifted your arm. You swung at it again and again, feet shifting on the dirt, steel cutting through the air.
Their tongues could wag all they wanted. It did not matter.
You sliced the dummy, the thin muslin splitting to spill straw on the ground, and gave it another vicious stab. You wished you had another person to spar with, a partner, but none of the guards were willing. Half of them were too afraid to bruise a high-born noble, and the other half did not believe you were capable of an equal fight.
Your kin were not known for being skilled with a blade or bow. A family of scholars. They were all too willing to keep to their cool libraries and delicate poetry, to their sprawling maps and cosy studies. If you had not cajoled one of the older guards stationed at your family’s home to teach you, there was no doubt you would have been unable to handle even a little dagger. Your days had been filled with reams of paper and dusty tomes, and the nights spent in a quiet courtyard mimicking his movements.
Your family kept their sharp words to themselves, but could not hide the disdain and disapproval in their stares. It was too common, too rough, to wield something as crude as a weapon. They had barred you from joining the march to Mordor, had near barricaded you in your room until the army was too far away to catch up with.
You took another swing at the dummy and it’s head ripped off, tumbling away to somewhere behind you. The guards chuckled and one of the bolder ones spoke up.
“Perhaps enough of that. Wouldn’t want to damage your pretty hands, eh?”
You whirled around, scathing words ready to leap off your tongue, when another voice came from behind the group of guards.
“I do not employ you to stand around gossiping like errant school children.”
They bowed their heads, muttering apologies, and parted for the man.
Faramir.
You had seen him at dinners and banquets before, but the only words you had exchanged with him were rehearsed pleasantries. He stood tall, his broad shoulders pulled back and his grey eyes stern and cold. He jerked his head and the guards scuttled off. Faramir offered you a small smile and you stiffened. Did he expect some sort of thanks? Some sort of gratitude for standing up for you? These great titled men always expected something, and he was the steward, a prince.
“That was not necessary, my Lord,” you said, sliding your sword into its sheath. “I am more than capable of fending for myself.”
He blinked at you, jaw slack, before a rueful smile spread across his face. “I do not doubt that. I have seen you train, you are a most skilled fighter.”
You arched your eyebrow at him. There was no mockery in his eyes, no snide twisting of his lips. “Perhaps, but I lack practice with a moving partner. Many of your guards are unwilling to spar with me. And I doubt even you will be able to compel them to.”
You turned away, ready to leave.
“I can spar with you.”
You stared at him from over your shoulder. That soft smile was back on his face again and there was a mirth in his eyes. Was he being serious? You swallowed. There might not be another chance to spar with a real person. It would be foolish to let it slip away. “When?”
He glanced at the sun. “Perhaps in a few hours. I have some duties to finish and I’m certain you would like to rest before another practice session.”
You rolled your sore shoulder and nodded. “Where?”
“If you do not feel too ill at ease, the Steward’s House has its own training courtyard. We shall not be disturbed there.”
Your eyes flickered to the guards lingering by the arches and pillars, eyes trailed on you and Faramir. “I shall come by just before the sixth bell.”
His smile grew wider and he bid you good day before you left for your rooms.
What did he mean by inviting you to spar? You did not know Faramir well, but he and his brother have never been known to be cruel. It was probably not some prank or joke. So why then? Was it truly possible that was genuinely interested in sparring with you? You shook your head. There was little point speculating; you would simply have to see what awaited you.
=
You stood in the middle of the courtyard, stretching your arms. Faramir had left to change into more casual clothes, apologising for his tardiness, stating that some meeting had run over. The sky was streaked orange and pink, the setting sun’s rays gilding the grey roof of the Steward’s House orange. The clamour of the Citadel was muffled by the high walls and the flutter and cry of roosting birds was the only thing you could hear.
The training courtyard was well kept. The grass was soft and shorn, the dummies stuffed and upright. You wandered over to them, circling the straw figures. One of the wooden poles was chipped and splintered, and much older than its counterparts. You ran your fingers over the aged wood. Did they forget to replace this pole? The pads of your fingers ghosted over something, close to the back of the dummy, and you bent to inspect it.
Boromir, carved into the wood, and under it in neater writing, Faramir.
Your chest tightened. You remembered seeing them together at a banquet, Boromir’s arm slung around Faramir’s neck, laughing about something. Denethor had been particularly scathing to Faramir that night, choosing to introduce only Boromir to the eligible members of the court. Faramir had stood at the edges of the crowd, a strained smile on his face, until Boromir had pulled him along and sang praises about his younger brother to whoever would listen.
You had not been one of them, but your eyes had lingered on Faramir the whole evening. On the way his hair fell in soft waves, on the gentleness of his smile. There was something about him. Something disarming, something tender.
“I see you’ve found our little secret.”
You whirled around, jerking your hand back. Faramir was leaning against a pillar with an amused smile tugging at his lips. He was in a loose tunic and plain linen trousers. How long had he been watching you? You straightened and cleared your throat. What could you say to him after being so intrusive?
You turned away and strode to the middle of the courtyard. “Shall we start?”
“You didn’t bring your weapon. Should I get —”
You turned around to face him, arms crossed over your chest. “You are better with a bow, and I am better with a sword. It would be an unequal fight. We can spar with our hands.”
His brows were raised in mild surprise and your words echoed in your mind. You swallowed and glared at a pillar. It was no secret within the court that Faramir was skilled with a bow; he would always win the archery tournaments they held every year.
He joined you in the middle of the courtyard and you raised your fists. “Do not go easy on me, my lord.”
He chuckled and you swung at him. He jerked back, your fist just grazing his nose, and ducked as you took another swing. He dodged easily and kicked at you. His foot brushed your trousers, but it didn’t connect with your shin. Faramir was a good fighter, better than you even. His arms were steady, his footwork clean. All it took was a misstep on your part, a foot placed just off balance, and you stumbled into him.
His arms came around you, large and strong. His skin was hot through the thin pieces of fabric separating your bodies. He smelled like clean linen and musk, and the lingering earthy scent of patchouli. Your fingers curled on his firm chest before you tore yourself away from him.
Your heart thumped against your ribs and your breaths came out ragged. You turned away and brushed some imaginary dirt off your arms. “Apologies,” you muttered, face flushed. “It seems I still have to practice.”
You looked over your shoulder at him. The high points of his cheeks were pink, and his lips were parted. He nodded, a smile growing on his face. “You are better than some of my captains.”
You eyed him. “You truly believe that?”
“I would not have said it otherwise.”
He believed that you could fight. That you were more skilled than the guards that heckled you and the nobles who turned their noses up at you. That you were better than their snide stares and insults.
Your chest tightened and your stomach swooped.
What was that feeling? How could his simple words affect you so?
You had to leave, leave before anymore… feelings rose in you. You muttered a quiet thanks and made excuses to leave.
“Shall I see you out?”
“No, you do not have to trouble yourself.”
“It is no trouble, I—”
“Good evening, my lord,” you muttered and strode away from the courtyard, your heart beating faster than it did when you were training.
--
Faramir stared at you from across the room, wondering if he should go speak to you. The small hall was drenched in a mellow orange light from the lanterns and torches. The modest quartet played a merry tune, the flute running trills alongside the strumming harp, and couples were gathering in the centre. The doors to the large balcony were thrown open and the heady scent of jasmine floated in on the summer breeze.
You lingered by the wall with a feebly disguised scowl on your face. You were out of your training clothes, and instead were dressed in fine silk. Your eyes were bright beneath your frown, alight with the same fire he saw that day in his courtyard.
You had moved with a grace that he rarely saw in other soldiers. There had been a fluidity, an ease in your movements, a lightness in your step. He supposed it was because of your noble upbringing, that somehow the posture and etiquette lessons had bled into the way you fought as well.
He would rarely describe fighting or battle as beautiful, but there was no other word he could use to describe you when he first saw you attacking the dummy. He had watched you from the upper balconies of the training grounds for a week before he steeled himself to speak to you. And when you had tripped and stumbled into his arms…
Heat rose to his face and he glanced away.
The last couple of weeks had been a torment. He could not stop himself from sending you invitations to spar, and to his surprise, you had accepted every one of them. Each time he touched you to correct your stance, his hand on your elbow, his foot against your calf, he could feel the echo of your presence for hours afterwards. And the smiles you flashed him, tentative and unsure, made his heart stutter.
He blinked the memories away. There was little chance you would return what feelings he had for you.
He remembered the time when he saw you at one of the banquets, the one where Boromir had introduced him to all the eligible nobles. He had been stealing glances at you the whole night, eyes tracing the line of your figure, lingering on the soft pink of your lips. He had watched you turn down anyone who asked you to dance, and when Boromir made his way towards you he stilled his brother’s feet. You clearly did not wish to be disturbed, so why should they be intrusive?
He sighed and wished that he had let his brother drag him to you. The crowd between you and him seemed like an ocean now, and it seemed with each passing moment his resolve faltered. You had rejected every suitor who had approached you, why should he be different?
His eyes wandered to you again, and he found you looking at him. A smile pulled at his lips and you offered one back. Your gaze drifted to the balcony and your feet shifted, body angled towards the beckoning night. After a moment, you pushed yourself off the wall and started weaving your way through the crowd towards the doors.
He silently asked Boromir for strength and followed you out.
The night was clear and balmy, and the stars twinkled overhead. You were leaning against the bannister, staring out at the circles and the plains beyond. The moon cast you in a soft light, diffused and glowing, and all at once it felt as though he had wandered into a dream.
He cleared his throat and you turned. “My lord, are you not enjoying the party?”
“It can be a bit much sometimes. May I join you?”
You nodded and he rested his arms next to yours. He could feel the warmth coming off you, could smell the faint rosemary oil from your hair. He opened his mouth to say something, but snapped it close. Did you even wish to converse?
You sighed and tilted your head up to the stars. Your eyes were distant and wistful, longing, almost. A look he saw sometimes when you thought no one was watching you.
You reminded him of some verse he had read in some forgotten book in the library, and the words tumbled from his tongue before he could stop them.
“Let those who are in favour with their stars
Of public honour and proud titles boast,
Whilst I, whom fortune of such triumph bars
Unlook’d for joy in that I honour most.”
You turned to him, eyebrows raised in surprise. A shy smile formed on your lips, and you continued.
“Great princes’ favourites their fair leaves spread
But as the marigold at the sun’s eye,
And in themselves their pride lies buried,
For at a frown they in their glory die.”
Poetry? You could recite poetry? Something blossomed in his heart and a smile spread across his face. Was there nothing that you couldn’t do? He cleared his throat and said, louder.
“The painful warrior famoused for fight,
After a thousand victories once foiled,
Is from the book of honour razed quite,
And all the rest forgot for which he toiled.”
Your lips parted, ready to form the final couplet, but then you shook your head and turned away, chuckling.
Were the words too tender for you to speak? Too heavy with the promise of something that would undoubtedly shake whatever tenuous friendship between the both of you?
“Did I stun you into silence, my lord?” You laughed. “Did you think me uncultured? That I only knew the ways of combat?”
“I thought no such thing. But I will admit to some surprise; there are few who know that verse.”
“My family are scholars, and my tutors had a penchant for poetry. It has been some time since I had spoken those words aloud.”
“You have a wonderful voice.”
“You would be the first to think so, my lord. My tutors have always said I do not recite with enough flair.”
“Flair is for those who have weak articulation and an unsteady cadence. Those whose voice and tone are strong enough can make even the most simple of verses beautiful.”
“Thank you,” you muttered before straightening and clearing your throat. “Please excuse me, I am in need of a drink.”
He nodded, holding his tongue from asking you to stay. You did not seem the type who responded well to such things.
He watched your retreating form and wondered when he would see you again.
--
You paused in the middle of the corridor to Faramir’s office, fingers curling around the envelope in your hand. Faramir’s name was written in your best hand on the front of the prettiest paper you could source.
Ever since that night on the balcony, you had known no peace in your thoughts. His voice, low and gentle, echoed in your ears. His grey eyes, shimmering in the starlight, flashed into your mind. So many times you had caught yourself halfway to his office, feet wandering to where your heart tried so hard to avoid.
How was it that Faramir, of all people, had wormed his way into your heart? Perhaps it was no great surprise in the end. Was it not him, who your eyes always wandered to across halls and dinner tables? Was it not him, who treated you as an equal, who saw you as you were?
Indeed, the great surprise would be if he felt the same.
But how were you to compare to the other nobles? To those with smooth hands and unblemished skin, to those who walked with grace and conversed with ease?
Your hands tightened around the letter, creasing the edges and corners. You took a few steps forward and paused again. Perhaps it would be best to simply turn around and walk away. To save yourself from more embarrassment.
You shifted on your feet, but his door swung open and he stepped out. You whipped your hands behind your back, letter crumpled in your fist.
“I thought I heard someone out here,” he said, an easy smile slipping onto his face. “So it has been you who has been haunting my corridor.”
You stiffened. “I do not know what you mean.”
He chuckled, eyes crinkling at the corners, and your heart sped up. “The last few days I would hear footsteps approaching, but no knock ever came.”
“Perhaps they were simply making their way to the other end of the corridor.”
He glanced at the oak door in question and arched his eyebrow at you. “To raid my personal stores of parchment and ink?”
“… Perhaps not.”
“I was half convinced it might have been some spectre, though you are certainly a much better surprise.” Heat crept up your neck and you looked away. “Please, come in. I have something for you. A gift.”
You followed him into his office, eyes drifting around the room. His desk, set by one of the windows, was littered with papers. Bookshelves lined one of the walls, and the other, with the fireplace, had two plush chairs placed in front of it. He strode to his desk and pulled a thin book out from under the papers.
“Here,” he said, voice low and hesitant. “I chanced upon it the other day and thought perhaps you might find some enjoyment in it.”
You took the volume from him and ran your fingers over the gilded title. The leather was soft and buttery, the lettering fading and flaking. It was certainly well-loved, and not something you suspected he had found by sheer chance. You flipped it open and you froze at the words.
Poems.
Love poems.
Faramir cleared his throat and you slammed the book shut. His smile had morphed into a shy one and his eyes were filled with tenderness. Was it possible that he felt the same? Could you dare to hope for such a thing?
“Thank you, I… I will treasure it.” You offered him a smile. “Unfortunately, I do not have anything to give in return.”
His smile grew wider and a playfulness sprang in his eyes. “Hmm. Perhaps that letter you have clutched so tightly in your hands?”
“It is not for you.”
“Is it not? For I have spied my name on it. If you were looking for a pageboy I can spare you the effort.” He reached out, palm up.
There was no insistence in his gaze, no impatience in his stance.
You swallowed. Could you afford to give him the letter? To risk your heart with the words you had so carefully penned? You looked down at the book in your hands. He had been brave, had he not? There is no one in Middle-Earth who could mistake the implication of such a gift.
You brought the letter out from under the book and ran your fingers over the creased envelope. “The paper I… It is damaged.”
He placed a tentative hand over yours. His skin was warm and rough, his fingers inkstained and callused. “The words within are not affected.”
You glanced up at him, heart racing, and paused at the look in his eyes. Faramir was never one to hide how he felt, and his eyes shone with an affection that even you could not deny. You nodded and he slid the envelope out from under your hand. He opened it with care, and his smile grew when he saw your words.
“Then happy I,” he read, stepping closer to you, voice no more than a whisper, “That love and am beloved.”
“Where I may not remove nor be removed,” you finished.
He let out a shaky laugh and searched for your hand. His fingers intertwined with yours and you sighed, bowing your head. He pressed a kiss to your forehead, his lips warm and soft. You inhaled his scent of leather and paper, patchouli and soap. He nestled his nose between your hair and exhaled, muttering half-formed words. You leaned into him, eyes fluttering shut.
Never to remove, you thought, and never to be removed.

What's the deal with these BNFs like JoLa and such lmao? Sorry I wasn't chronically online during GOT so I had no idea this was a thing until recently LOL.
Oh man, nonny, you are really taking me back. BNFs or “Big Name Fans” are one of the worst aspects of ASOIAF/GOT fandom in my humble opinion. I think the fact that there has been such large gaps in between books, a lot of fans are really desperate for content and thus BNFs are created to fill that need for new ASOIAF content, their word only being surpassed by George. Most BNFs have one or two good takes/theories that got them big and then are uniformally idiots in everything else they say, but the fandom takes them as gospel because they’ve been around so long or were right about one really important thing. A lot of the biggest of the BNFs originated on the westeros.org forums and actually interacted occasionally with George back when he still did stuff like that, and now are considered authorities on the series. The most successful BNFs are probably Elio and Linda who now actually work with George and co-wrote AWOIAF with him (and they’ve had their own very stupid drama that I cannot be bothered to remember. @starkmaiden probably remembers it though. She’s my go to fandom drama lorist)
A lot of the worst but most widely accepted theories can be traced back to a BNF, and since the books have been so slow in coming, these theories ended up just becoming part of the fabric of the fandom. It also doesn’t help that most BNFs are absolute divas that hate it when they end up being wrong or having pushback. I remember rolling my eyes at BryndenBFish who had particularly influential (but often very dumb) theories who I believe left the fandom in a huff and deleted all his stuff. The worst BNF fans in my opinions are the ones who made super long videos or podcasts about the most inane details (I’m taking specifically about Lucifermeanslightbringer here since I ended up listing to like ten hours of the Bloodstone Compendium trying desperately to understand why he was so popular)
On tumblr during GoT, most of the BNFs here were part of the asoiafuniversity account, (including the lovely JoLa) which branded itself as neutral but was decidedly not lol, and had particular drama with people who asserted the Dark Dany theory, which ended up being true, lol. I think they even straight up banned contributions that supported “Mad Dany” at one point. Most BNFs tend to be pro-jonerys, pro-Tyrion, pro-Dany, intensely into Targaryen history (and weirdly a lot of them were really into Stannis before he bit it. The Stannis the Mannis faction was crazy but also kinda fun lol) I’ve always been pro-Bran, pro-Catelyn, and pro-Sansa, so I never really got too into the BNFs, but I did accept that Tyrion, Jon, and Dany were the three heads of the dragons before I read ADWD because everyone else seemed to think that was the case.
And that to me is the biggest problem with BNFs, that a lot of them still espose theories and takes that they came up with before AFFC/ADWD were published and they refuse to budge even though there’s clearly been a shift. (This was before the show ended, which changed a lot of the fandom landscape)
(I also think that a lot of them couldn’t analyze their way out of a paper bag, but that seems to just be me lol. The POV trap is very real for most of these people.)
I’ve also noticed that a lot of BNFs are also Wheel of Time fans, and sometimes use that series to theorize about the end of ASOIAF, which is uh, a strategy I guess. (I know George likes it and all but I think the series have very different vibes, and George has listed series he was drawing on and I don’t think WoT was on that list. Somebody somewhere compiled it, and I think LoTR and The Dragonbone Chair were on it.)
The greatest hits of the BNFs in my opinion are that Tyrion, Jon and Dany are the three heads of the dragon and are going to save the world, which was widely accepted as the ending to the series, by pretty much everyone who was anyone. Season 8 killed that stone dead though, big lol from me. Some people still believe it though for some reason. Some three heads of the dragon propenents also believed it in conjunction with the “Tyrion is secretly a Targaryen” theory which has like one piece of actual evidence, that Aerys had a thing for Joanna, and the weight of Tyrion is Tywin’s son thematic narrative against it.
My favorite offshoot of the three heads of the dragon theory is the curtain of light one, which is simply *chef’s kiss* Basically the curtain of light that Bran sees at the edge of the world is entirely literally and in no way a metaphor, and Bran will have nothing to do with it. Instead, Jon and Dany are going to fuck in the curtain of light to save the world while Tyrion awkwardly watches, and the baby they conceive will be the messiah. AMAZING stuff right there. And because this brilliant take was thought up by a BNF, it actually gained a fair amount of traction.
Other highlights include screeching about the “Main Five” in which they only grudgingly include Bran in order to exclude Sansa from having any relevance to the big endgame, that Catelyn is an absolute bitch responsible for all evils in the world, that Tywin is the biggest mastermind in Westeros, that f!Aegon is definitely fake with no room to debate, Val will be plot relevant to Jon somehow (as his future Queen for those who aren’t super into Jon and Dany endgame), Stannis will take WF, Jaime is going to be redeemed, and Azhor Ahai is some eleborate metaphor for the nature of the universe.
Say what you will, but BNFs really did fill some of the content void while we all wait for TWOW but a lot of them were absolutely batshit and their insane takes were taken extremely seriously by most of the fandom. Some of them even did rounds at conventions I believe. There are some BNFs still around and kicking but a lot of them left permanently after the show ended, which fair enough. The meltdowns during s8 were spectacular and many. Almost makes up for how shitty the show’s writing was lol.
My pet BNF was JoLa, and I even had some civil interactions with her about non Jonsa metas, related to her one good contribution to the fandom, the Dead Ladies Club. She had some of the wildest takes about Dany despite her constantly claiming she wasn’t that invested in non-Lannister theories and ships.
The BNFs were a fascinating phenomenon that you really had to experience in real time to get the full breadth of insanity. The most crazy takes being taken as basically canon really made me feel like I was losing it, or straight up reading different books.

Tolkien ask game!
Thank you @ass-deep-in-demons and @hippodameia for tagging me! This turned out absurdly long and I apologize in advance.
How old were you when you read/watched LOTR for the first time: Watched the movies when they came out- I was 8 for the first one. Read the books at 11
Favourite LOTR character: Boromir, Eowyn, and Sam
Books or movies: I love them both in different ways! But I definitely engage with the movies more than the books
Favourite movie: Fellowship of the Ring. Favorite book is The Two Towers
Which location in Middle Earth would you want to visit most: The Shire! And Rivendell! And Minas Tirith! And Edoras! And- can I just go on a road trip to see everything?
Favourite scene: I have so many! Sorry in advance:
The Fellowship on Caradhras (book), with Legolas being a little shit and running off to find the sun while the text will not let you forget for a single second just how strong and beefy Boromir is
Sam in Shelob's lair (book)
Eomer and his men coming to the rescue in Helm's Deep (movie)
The Rohirrim riding to Gondor's aid at the Pelennor fields (also movie)
Faramir's flashback (extended edition), I wish we could have seen more of him and Boromir together
The bit from The Hobbit- yes I got out my book to find the scene- "It was at this point that Bilbo stopped. Going on from there was the bravest thing he ever did. The tremendous things that happened afterwards were as nothing compared to it. He fought the real battle in the tunnel alone, before he ever saw the vast danger that lay in wait." I loved that scene as a kid. I practically had it memorized lol. I'd never read a story that described a story that way, and it had this great larger than life feel to it
Shoot if I'm getting books out to reference things I may as well dig up this one too- in The Two Towers, one of the Nazgul flies overhead, and it's so dark that only its shadow is visible overhead, and Tolkien says "The stars fainted before it" which was such a simple line but aaaaah! I liked it so much when I first read it that it made me want to become a writer. The drama! The symbolism! The imagery!
Favourite quote: I'm sorry. I'm so bad at narrowing down my favorites!
Sam's speech in Osgiliath
"Look! The king has got a crown again!"
"I love him. He's like that, and sometimes it shines through, somehow. But I love him, whether or no."
"They have a cave troll" (yes I am basic as hell)
The entire conversation between Aragorn and Boromir in Lothlorien
What Middle Earth race would you want to be: oh god I want to be a hobbit I just know it would lower my blood pressure and cure my anxiety and clear my skin. I just want to bake a lattice pie and put it on the windowsill of a round window :(
Favourite LOTR ship if you have one: Farawyn is great of course. I'm also getting more and more into Boromir/Theodred. Although tbh I'd ship Boromir with any human who stands still too long
Tagging @sotwk and @marsharmonicorchestra and @brigwife and anyone else who wants to play!

Fic author interview! I was tagged by @what-alchemy - thank you! No-pressure tagging @phdmama, @incognitajones, @alessandriana, @lynne-monstr, and anyone else who wants to play.
How many works do you have on AO3?
349 publically, maybe a dozen more in anon collections, and two or three that I've orphaned for various reasons.
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
1,349,113, ye gods.
3. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Calamity's Child (Stranger Things) - 7249 kudos
Body of Memory (Shadowhunters) - 5029 kudos
Star of the Masquerade (Stranger Things) - 4923 kudos
lost souls and reverie (The Witcher - TV) - 3118 kudos
So Newly Charming (Stranger Things) - 2274 kudos
4. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I used to, but I've been really bad about it in the past year or so. I do read and cherish every comment I get, though.
5. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
Hard to say! There are a couple of Supernatural ficlets from ~13 years ago with fairly fucked up endings. Of my somewhat recent fic, probably either Empty or Bonny Mad Boys (both for Shadowhunters), with a special mention for my zombie apocalypse Buddie fic, where the dead men lost their bones, although that does at least allow for the possibility of a happy(ish) ending.
6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?
Honestly, the vast majority of my fic has happy endings, even when I put them through the wringer first.
7. Do you write crossovers?
I've written a few, mostly for various fic challenges. It's not something I do all that often though.
8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?
Oh, yeah. Death threats, even! Shadowhunters fandom was weirdly unhinged about this.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Um, yes. XD
I used to write smut very rarely, and feel extremely awkward about it, and then I decided to write 100k words worth of fills for the Clowntown kinkmeme, and that pretty much cured me of that.
10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not as far as I know?
11. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes, several, into a handful of different languages. Always very exciting! I link back if I know about them.
12. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Not one that ever actually got posted.
13. What’s your all-time favorite ship?
I have been in fandom wayyyy too long to answer this, lol.
14. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
I have a really angsty Reddie cheating fic that I wrote like 20k words of and then abandoned. I sometimes think about returning to it, but honestly I probably won't.
15. What are your writing strengths?
I think I write pretty good dialogue - it's definitely one of the things I enjoy the most. Also action and smut, which IMO are pretty similar from a logistical standpoint.
16. What are your writing weaknesses?
I am so bad at anything resembling plotting. SO bad. And frankly I always feel like my fluff is stilted and saccharine; I do much better with angst, generally speaking.
17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
I've done it before, but I probably wouldn't now, not the least because I'm really not fluent enough in any other language to be worth it.
18. What was the first fandom you wrote for?
That I actually posted? LOTR RPF. Thankfully, that's been lost to the defunct forums of 2002. I've been writing fic just for my own entertainment pretty much as long as I've been able to read, though.
19. What’s a fandom/ship you haven’t written for yet but want to?
Good Omens! I've read a fair amount of fic, but I didn't really get immersed in the fandom until after season 2. I have a couple of ideas that I'm playing around with, but I don't completely feel like I've got the character voices down yet.
20. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written
This changes OFTEN. I think right now, So Newly Charming is the fic I've written most recently that actually came out exactly how I wanted it to. I can reread it without cringing, which is a rarity for me.

Why do you think there’s a pattern of Theseus being abusive/overly aggressive in Fantastic Beasts fanfic? It’s been driving me up the wall trying to find Newt and Theseus fanfic that doesn’t make them OOC especially Theseus, and idk, in the context of Newt being Autistic I find it disturbing. Like sure, Theseus is hot-headed and loses his temper, he doesn’t always understand Newt, but those traits seem overtly exaggerated in a lot of fandom content.
Tumblr media
Obsessed with this ask. I have been thinking about it all day, and am just now getting to write it up! Thinking about it in the background of my statistics class almost singularly got me through its sensory and anxiety hell. /sweat-laugh emoji/ So thank you!
Please remember, all of this is based on my own perspectives, knowledge, and headcanons, as well as canon clues. Nothing here is definitive and is open for respectful conversation! (Not directed specifically at you, salamander, just since this is a public blog I like to cover my bases. ^_^)
Buckle up: major autistic info dump incoming
Tumblr media
Alright, so, my initial thoughts are that...
Obviously, there was a decent chunk of Newt fic written between 2016 and 2018 before CoG came out, that first film where we really got to see Theseus as a character, for who he really is (especially since they cut that letter from him to Newt at beginning of FBWTFT, that starts with "little brother," which is just pretty endearing). IMHO, this two-year gap means people had a wide open playing field to build the character themselves. Here's a few thoughts on that:
The framework for the entire Wizarding World, narratively, is the Harry Potter series. Boy wizard, shunned by family, isolated from socialization -- Outcasts have always been the backbone of She-who-must-not-be-named's stories. It's compelling. We love it, we lap it up. With only one FB film out before 2018 and Newt being such a unique protagonist, I think it's likely people fell back on the more typical Harry-Dudley trope to create a compelling backstory for Newt, using that tried-and-true fantasy Cinderella-type trope.
Second, from what I can tell, there was a lot less serious consideration of Newt actually being autistic in the early years of the fandom. (I only "joined" relatively recently myself, despite going to the first 2 movies on opening day, but I'm nothing if not fastidious in consuming every scrap of historical content when I develop a new interest, lol.) I've read pages of threads and plenty of "think pieces" attributing Newt's behavior to trauma-related social anxiety and/or his profession as a magizoologist. I absolutely buy the latter (adjusting body language for one's profession), but not entirely the former. (Personally, Newt doesn't strike me as an inherently anxious person--he strikes me as an inherently autistic one who also sometimes experiences anxiety. Discomfort and anxiety aren't the same thing, but people often conflate them, imho.) Anyway, THAT BEING SAID, I've noticed in quite a few fics that people write Theseus as being part of that implied social trauma, via sibling bullying that rises beyond typical sibling harassment. People perhaps tried to explain Newt's behavior by making him, at the very least, overshadowed by Theseus (and ashamed of it) or, at the very worst, abused and/or neglected by his family.
Also, quite simply: people process their own family trauma via fic. I think it's highly likely Theseus just served a sibling or parental role for some people in stories. (The abundance of abusive!Thranduil fic in the LotR fandom in the early 00s is another example of this.) Nothing wrong with using fic to process feelings and life experiences (god knows I do, it's horrifically obvious and always has been lmao), but this bulletpoint is still one explanation for the pre-CoG "Theseus being a dick in fic" phenomenon.
Plus, fanfic doesn't occur in a vacuum. Even when new canon info comes out, existing fic and whatever the going/contemporary fanon is often impact how new writers write their characters, even post-CoG. (And how those characterizations are received by the larger fandom--that reception may subsequently impact how writers maintain or change their characters in the future, imho.)
Tumblr media
As for the current reasons Theseus is often OOC in post-CoG fic...
Well, I have my theories, but I am also not entirely sure. However, I feel pretty confident it has to do, primarily, with points 1 and 4.
Leta Lestrange and the Scamander Brothers - Honestly, I think people likely are pretty offended on Newt's behalf for the Leta/Theseus marriage. In mainstream media, we're kind of trained to think that dating your friend's ex is ultimate betrayal--it's difficult for people to imagine a world in which a person who marries their brother's ex is a good person. (...I was once in a friend group where we had all dated the same girl at some point, but we were all either ridiculously honest or autistic so we just--wait for it--talked about it and moved on.) That being said, I never read Leta & Newt as overtly romantic (then again, I also didn't know Bunty liked Newt until the 4th time I watched CoG), so I don't entirely get this one to the degree that I think some people viscerally feel this. But I expect some people see that and assume it says something much larger about Theseus' character than it does. (I do think it says a lot about Theseus that he loves Leta, but I don't think it says the same things about him that some other people do -- I think it speaks more to his similarities to Newt [compassion and positive outlook] than it does to stealing Newt's Hogwarts sweetheart. But I digress.)
Something Did Happen at Some Point - Now, there is undeniably a distance between the brothers that we, as viewers, don't necessarily know the origin of. (So I think I may have mentioned in my letters that [my brother & I] have quite a complicated relationship. // Does he want to kill you? // Frequently.) Have they always been like that? Is it new? Is it because of the age difference? Because they have different personalities? (Though I will argue until I'm blue in the face that they're actually extraordinarily similar people, at their cores.) Is it because Newt got expelled, or because Theseus scooped up Leta, or because Theseus expresses emotion through touch & Newt jerks away from touch he doesn't initiate himself, or because because because because because? I don't know. But there is something there and, based on the "complicated relationship" comment, it sounds like it is something that likely developed over time. So imho - I think some people see that and just lean in way too hard. Like, pedal to the medal, 0 to 60 too hard.
Theseus is Snarky to Newt on Multiple Occasions - Mostly based around how Newt directs his life, carries himself, etc etc. For example, it would be easy to take that whole scene before and after Newt's travel hearing in CoG and assume Theseus is an overprotective, condescending, and ableist prick. But if we look below the surface (and the stage directions in the screenplay help, too. When he says "maybe a little less... / like me. / well, it can't hurt" the instructions say 'not without fondness', or something like that), it's pretty glaringly obvious he doesn't mean to be that way. Even condescending behaviors usually have causal correlates, even if we can't see them on the surface. (Believe me -- and this is something we both touched on in DMs, salamander, I'm just repeating for the sake of the ask -- well-meaning pep talks and encouragement can still drip with condescension when loved ones think you need guidance because they "love you and know better " and you're just too autistic or too idealistic or too naive or whatever.) Ultimately, whether due to a failure to approach these snarky exchanges with grace and nuance, or because it can make a good fic to put brothers at odds, IDK -- but I expect this particular point plays into some people's decisions to interpret Theseus in a way I view as OOC.
Ease of Narrative ~ Nuance is hard - I mean, this one explains itself. Writing characters in a nuanced manner that allows digging into the messy horrible confusion of relationships--embedded as they are within families and societies and personal & general history--is not easy. It takes not only patience and significant effort as a writer, but it also takes a degree of self-awareness and maturity that we all reach at different points. I'm not there yet myself (there's no real arrival -- life's not a perfect graph), but still: My fic writing is very different now at 32 (with 14 years of 'adulthood' and 12 years of therapy under my belt) than it was when I was writing about adults when I was 15. (And, yes, I still have my first posted HP fic up on MuggleNet and FFnet, so you don't just have to take my word for it lmao.) To be very clear, this isn't me being ageist or whatever: I'm just saying that I often get the sense while reading fic where Theseus is reallllly overly aggressive that the writer is sometimes either very new to creative writing (and good for them! we love new writers! keep writing, lovelies!), or else quite young, and thus still acquiring life experience that is going to improve their work as they age, every single day.**
Sibling Experience - Not having personal or narrative experience with an age gap like Newt and Theseus have. I'm an older sibling by 7.5 years, which is close to Theseus & Newt's age difference. I basically half-raised my younger brother, so I have a real soft spot for that kind of sibling relationship, which comes across in most of my fics (LotR & FB). It's hard to imagine the sort of borderline sibling-parental love, responsibility, and anxiety that can permeate those kind of relationships if you haven't experienced or seen it represented in media yourself. This is just a theory, of course---I have no actual data on this being actually related to his OOCness.
What else? What do you or others think?
Tumblr media
Final very random thought
I also think a lot of people forget that autism runs in families. So yes, Theseus doesn't always "get" Newt (god, no, lol) and he doesn't have guidance on what to do when he doesn't, but it is highly unlikely he hasn't seen behavior similar to Newt's before, whether in a parent or cousins, an aunt/uncle or something else. People *also* tend to forget, IMHO, that subclinical traits are often present in direct family members of an autistic person--Theseus' rigid thinking, for example, isn't necessarily "autistic", but he may get Newt better than people think for certain reasons we never have an opportunity to see in the script. (Not that the movies are paying *that* much attention to the actual research or autism presentations lmao, but I'm just saying it is a possibility). Being able to relate to a smaller version of someone's struggles can simultaneously make one both a better support and a worse one in a lot of ways. (And certain autistic traits can even rub up against each other poorly in different people--I have a few acquaintances that rub me the wrong way because our "symptoms" manifest in very different ways and their natural behavior triggers some of my own sensory issues or overdeveloped sense of justice or whatever. Conversely, my ADHD tendency to be 20 minutes late to every hang gives one of my autistic friends a panic attack every time -- I feel terrible, but all we can both do is try to adjust the behavior around our symptoms. And sometimes the same traits--firmly held beliefs, for example--bump into each other explosively, which I have experienced in fandom myself: two autistic people w diametrically opposing views interacting, but because we process information in similar ways even with very different perspectives, no progress can be made before someone shuts down.) BUT I BRING THIS UP BECAUSE, I do think it's possible to headcanon that some of Newt and Theseus' conflict (which does exist) could even be rooted in differing forms of neurodivergence or presentation of subclinical symptoms.
The world is a big place and there's so many possibilities. These are just some of my thoughts on why Theseus is often portrayed in a way I find to be OOC!

Asterisked footnote under cut -
**I'm trying to convey what Sandra Cisneros does much better in her short story "Eleven." That we, all of us, carry our entire lives and what we have seen inside of us at all times, and I think that's what we bring to our writing.
What they don’t understand about birthdays and what they never tell you is that when you’re eleven, you’re also ten, and nine, and eight, and seven, and six, and five, and four, and three, and two, and one. And when you wake up on your eleventh birthday you expect to feel eleven, but you don’t. You open your eyes and everything’s just like yesterday, only it’s today. And you don’t feel eleven at all. You feel like you’re still ten. And you are—underneath the year that makes you eleven. Like some days you might say something stupid, and that’s the part of you that’s still ten. Or maybe some days you might need to sit on your mama’s lap because you’re scared, and that’s the part of you that’s five. And maybe one day when you’re all grown up maybe you will need to cry like if you’re three, and that’s okay. That’s what I tell Mama when she’s sad and needs to cry. Maybe she’s feeling three. Because the way you grow old is kind of like an onion or like the rings inside a tree trunk or like my little wooden dolls that fit one inside the other, each year inside the next one. That’s how being eleven years old is.

Hello New and Old Followers!
I was inspired by @gracieart and her cool intro to herself, so I figured I'd do something similar, because it's been a hot minute and I have thousands of followers and it feels like it's time to do this.
My name is Nike and I am an Elriel
It's funny, but I don't really remember how I became an Elriel, but I think I got so mad over Azriel's POV that I started looking for other Elriels and I found them! (phew). The first 2 people i got to talking to were @elriell and @tswaney17
But I actually started off as a MAD Feysand(er) and Rhys is my first love in SJM books.
Before SJM, I never really read fantasy, beyond LOTR, and one day, my Kindle suggested a 'sexy dark fantasy' and I was like, what's a sexy dark fantasy? And it was ACOTAR. I read the first 2 books, and then ACOWAR came out and I read that, and I just wasn't enamoured with ACOWAR at all, so I sort of lost interest. And then it was Covid and literally months of nothing to do, so I picked up ACOFAS, and then ACOSF was coming out soon after. So I re-read all the books in the mid-2020 and got into the fandom.
A little bit about me.
Food: I love anything that swims. Any seafood. In general, I will pretty much eat anything. Don't particularly love sweets.
My least favourite food is pasta.
Hobbies: I write and sometimes I paint/draw. I have a case of extreme wanderlust and love to travel. Anywhere, everywhere. I love art--hence the amount of art I post.
TV: I am known for not watching TV and having no clue as to what is popular.
My life revolved around football (or soccer in the US). I watch it all the time--in fact, I am watching it now. I am a massive Premiere League and Seria A fan. Otherwise, I like House of the Dragon and Euphoria.
Music: Best way to describe my music style is chaotic. I love everything.
I loath Adele.
Books: Dark romance is where I am at. I don't actually read a ton of fantasy--only very specific fantasy and only from authors I like and trust.
I love Angel Lawson, Amelia Hitchins, and my girls Peckham and Valenti, I love David Ignatius and Daniel Silva, and I used to love the Pendergast Series, until it jumped the shark.
Dude: I have a dude. He looks exactly like Cassian. He often acts like him too. I love him.
Sometimes, he BETAs my fanfics. He's got strong opinions on fantasy dudes. (Cassian is his fave. SHOCKER)
Ships: Darius Acrux and Roxanya Vega is the ultimate ship of my life. That is love. And I am waiting for Elriel. I love Nessian.
Edu: I have a BA in International Relations, a Masters' in History, and an MBA
What am I like? The closest you can compare me to is Lance Orion. Kind of bitchy, but loyal, and only love like 4 people.
I HATE fighting. I am not confrontational, especially not online, with people I don't know. I am not going to waste time proving something about myself to a gray box.
There are definitely people in this fandom that I hate. But I try to avoid them.
Distinctions: I am fluent in 3 languages, know 2 more.
I've not been to the movies in like 10 years. I've had one, maybe two blogs dedicated to just hating me. LOL
I don't have any other social media that's associated with this fandom, so no need to look anywhere.
That's me and my sister.
We don't look like that anymore.

wow the day was SO much fun—we watched the the extended versions which I hadn’t seen since I was a teenager so it was a LONG day but the couple hosting had planned out a whole LOTR-themed menu where we ate first breakfasts, second breakfasts, elevenses, etc every time we switched the DVD. so I am extremely full but they were fantastic company and it was so much fun. I originally intended to stay for just a movie and a half, maybe two, because it was my first time hanging out with them without our other mutual friends present and I thought it might be too intense to spend like 12+ hours together, but actually it ended up feeling like the kind of intense bonding you do when you’re on a super super long road trip with people you don’t know that well?? like it felt like the extremely prolonged proximity meant we were able to get through the awkward early phase of hanging out with new people and now I just feel totally comfortable in their company, a stage that usually takes me a REALLY long time to get to. also they had one of their close friends there who I have met a couple times before and he’s very nice but also I think kinda awkward and shy so I felt less weird being kinda awkward and shy too because clearly they don’t mind hanging out with people who are sort of quiet sometimes in social settings. anyway it was so fun 😭 anyway I am feeling the euphoric high of extended social time with friendly people (why am I constantly having to relearn that I’m not as much of an introvert as I imagine myself to be lol) and I feel like there is real friend potential there which I am determined to capitalize on.
then I came home and listened to the baby’s heartbeat again… I have decided to let myself do that for 30 seconds or so every night if I need to until he’s big enough that I can feel him moving. I find it intensely reassuring and also I think it is helping me get through the loss-related block I had for basically the whole first trimester where I wouldn’t let myself think of him as a baby at all because it felt too scary. but now I can listen to him and hear my heartbeat next to his fast little galloping heartbeat and it is helping me picture him as a real little being in there. god also I don’t know if it’s the HB monitor or the first trimester hormone surge tapering off but I feel SO much less depressed and frantic than I did. on my drive home I was thinking gosh I need to remember this because I suspect I will be a likely candidate for postpartum depression/anxiety… I need to remember how much the hormones fuck with my head and I maybe need to be a bit faster about taking action instead of letting it slowly escalate to crisis/meltdown mode. I am hoping that having an established therapist relationship will help with that!! and maybe I can eventually come up with a plan with her for riding out those surges without losing my entire goddamn mind. idk I feel like the last couple days it’s felt like I had my brain back a little bit… like I was more myself than I’ve felt in a long time. I hope it sticks 😭

💕, 🥳, 💡, 🔮
💕 What is your favorite fic that you’ve written?
Of the fics I consider Finished, I'm shouting out Making the Most of It. REALLY happy with how that came out :)
🥳 Why did you start writing fanfic?
I think I was in 3rd grade, maybe 2nd- I typed "Digimon Stories" into Google and was delighted to find stories about my favorite show. I was so little I didn't totally understand how to navigate websites, and thought you just got 20 random stories every day, so you can imagine my :D when I discovered the "next" button and how to use the search feature lol. I don't remember my first fic exactly, but I wrote it after the movie came out and it was some insane Digimon crack fic lol.
I just really wanted to make up my own stories about my favorite stories, and I've always had an affection for plucky guys I felt got done wrong by fandom and wanted to do better to make people understand why I loved them so much- I wrote fanfic about Davis from Digimon and Boromir from LOTR. The only fic I left up on FFnet was an HP fic that I might port over to AO3 and revise, and maybe finish or at least add authors notes of my outline, because I do mostly like what I had, but for Obvious Reasons have not been super motivated to write for that fandom in recent years lol.
💡How many WIPs do you currently have?
Oooh okay, a lot of things in the hopper, let me categorize:
Actively Working On
Truly unhinged Hawnk fic for kinktober kfkfkfk
The Courage To Be
Star Wars fic 'Resolute'
Actively Pondering/Nibbling On
CharHawk Fake Dating
HouliHawk role play fail
Two age play fics that are similar in tone, one CharHawk and one Hawkahy- not sure if either will get finished, but don't think I'll write both, so pondering options
Hawkeye "turns into a cat" gen fic
Hawkeye Goes To California and BJ Goes To Maine at the same time without telling the other and swap lives for about two weeks.
Two post-war fics, one that is a sequel to Making the Most of It and one that's more focused on Daniel and Hawkeye's relationship, although BJ and Trapper are both there. Pretty distinct, but with enough overlap I need to pick one to prioritize to make sure I don't write too similar of scenes between them.
Soft Hibernation
The next part of my Rescue Bots fic- I know what the next bit will be, touched the doc last month, but not actively working on it
Under the Banner of Heaven case fic/undercover in a gay bar fic. Haven't worked on this in a few months, but I still really like the idea
Hibernation
X-Men Band AU. Been over a year since I worked on it, although I have a pretty good outline for a lot of what needs writing
1920s X Men AU. Soft abandoned, I remember some of my ideas for this but don't think I'll write it.
Succession KenStewy fic. I have some scenes and an outline, but it's hard to get in these assholes (affectionate) POV...
Captain America Clone Fic I haven't touched in almost a decade now god help me. Functionally abandoned but I still think on it occasionally kgkdjdkd.
🔮 Any advice for writers working through burnout or writer’s block?
Keep pondering, keep nibbling, and don't be afraid to shelve an idea and come back to it later. Fanfic is supposed to be for fun after all lfkdjjd
I have found it helpful to make the world's worst outline to act as a kind of checklist document and help connect scenes of I get stuck at one point and need to skip ahead a little.
I also like to try and focus on an emotional vibe to carry the fic, which helps get in the characters head so I can get in that trance state where the little guys are Doing Things and I just have to write it down kfjdjf. Sometimes I have an idea I like but it takes some pondering to find an emotional angle to connect with the character that makes sense as to why they are Doing The Plot, so nailing that angle before I commit to writing helps...
If I start getting bogged down in research I do the "five link" rule, where I only let myself read five things about the topic, try and cobble together enough of an explanation to pass a sniff test, then move on kgkrkrkdj
Also with skipping, the Sticking Point comes when I get too far ahead and then lose motivation for the part I was writing. Trying desperately to avoid this with my two multi-parters rn jdkdjd. Only letting myself write one or two scenes ahead helps a little...
