of course elon wants to step down as CEO. he can ban and harass and boost from the dark while someone else (ie new CEO) gets all the flack. and then he can claim ignorance because "he's not the CEO" even though he still controls/owns the fucking company outright.

but the thing is: HE’S ONLY NOW REALIZING THIS????? AND DIDN’T UNDERSTAND THIS FROM THE START??????

we're literally watching a billionaire learn the basics of social media that anyone who had an open diary, AOLIM account, or myspace has known for decades.

for reals anyone who ever thought this guy is a genius or some great man theory is just a useful idiot and they deserved to be bullied

They finally did it.

AOL is preventing me from connecting to their servers with AOL Instant Messenger 5.9.3857.

Let me be clear that this is not a case of just never upgrading past version 5. I did try version 7 back when it was new -- and promptly discovered I hated it. (See this post for more.) Not only was it far less lightweight and unobtrusive than AOLIM 5, but it didn’t allow me to keep using my saved Away Messages in any reasonably functional manner.

(Here’s 524 of them, lest you think I’m kidding about that being important to me. And I’ve added 57 more in the four years since I compiled that list.)

I’ve backed up the registry key containing all 581 of them, but I’m not optimistic about my chances of being able to use them with any other client.

Meanwhile, I’m still on Skype if anyone wants to call...

(UPDATE: It turns out AOLIM 7.5, which is the oldest version you can still get from AOL, doesn’t even list my saved Away Messages at all! And I can’t find where new saved messages are being stored -- can anyone help with this?)

Regarding my AOLIM status.

When I'm "away" on AOL Instant Messenger, I'm usually not really away.

In fact, much of the time I'm just using my Away Message to throw up a random joke or reference and see who gets it (like "Now let's pretend... IT'S OVERRUN BY MERCENARY GUERRILLAS!"). In fact, over a year and a half ago I put up a collection of all 524 of my saved Away Messages up to that point, to give you some idea of the type of thing I use them for.

(Fittingly, one of them is: "Ever notice how my Away Messages these days never really tell you where I am anymore?")

(Inversely, the reason I usually forget to set my status to Away on Skype is because you don't get to give a custom message to go with it. So I just use my top-of-the-profile message to serve the same purpose.)

The upshot of all this is: if you see I'm away, don't hesitate to shoot me a message anyway! Odds are good that I am actually at the computer and will respond in short order. Because who doesn't like getting unexpected (and non-spammy) IMs?
