#this whole article is bad but this was the WORST #not even for the reason you think (819 reasons)#Eliza you've already heard this rant but #if I can be way too sincere and long-winded for a moment #'always if I ask him something he helps'#how many quotes do we have from teammates over the years saying that exact thing #michael latta saying 'it doesn't matter if you're a top pair dman or a 4th line peasant; he'll do anything to help you'#christian djoos saying 'he's always there for you no matter what time or place. if something's up he's always there'#HHA saying recently nicke gave him his number and told him 'if you need anything just call me and I can help you'#carly in that interview when this was announced saying how nicke has been the support for everyone in that locker room from himself and osh #to guys who haven't been there long like strome and even pacioretty #I know holts and batya and andre and rasmus and jojo and tj and tom and karl alzner have all said stuff like this too #and that's just who I can think of off the top of my head #like. that's it. that's nicke.#if you ask him something. he helps.#for such an amazing athlete. for such a crucial part of making hockey A Thing in DC.#what his teammates want to talk about is his kindness #and that speaks so highly of him and is so genuinely admirable to me and worth aspiring to #I don't want to put anyone on a pedestal because we don't know these guys #but like. in terms of impact. nicke really genuinely made me try to be a better more thoughtful more actively outreaching friend #because I saw the way his teammates talked about him and that's how I want to be thought of.#I want people to know I'll be there for them. & not that I haven't been willing to do that but I've been more active about offering it #and part of that genuinely is because of his example #there's a million other things about his kindness I could mention before I even get to his hockey but this has already gone on far too long #so anyway #he is so dear to me #I hope he is happy and healthy #and that he knows how loved he is #nicklas backstrom #hockey

my physical therapist, clearly worried he's imparting bad news: okay, so with systemic conditions like this, we uuuusually want to do long-term maintenance check-ins, so once you're doing better i'll still probably want to see you every month or so....

Re read Wayside School again recently and I forgot how deeply and intensely trans-coded Mac and Nancy were

Like, this is a children's book written in the late 1980s, but these two kids have a chapter where they switch names because their birth names don't match their genders. And it's Wayside school, so more attention is paid to the silliness of how they go about changing names, but it still is a deeply trans narrative. And everyone in the class accepts that Mac is Mac now, and they goof off switching names with each other. And the narrative makes it clear who's talking by mentioning their original, "real" name, but it never does that with Mac.

I love this series. It's so good, it captures the experience of being a kid so well.

#very little of it aged poorly #all that is there is one instance of the g slur and maybe a few fatphobic comments (though one of the most athletic characters is also #pointed out to be fat)#even the chapter where one of the kids brings a homeless guy in for show and tell is really kind of cute #he's as goofy as everything else in the story but is shown to be a very intelligent guy #he doesn't sit down and explain income inequality to the class of small children #but he knows where mac's missing sock was and can spell really well #(the sock was in the refrigerator ofc)#wayside school #children's books #everything i aspire to be #queue queue

some of y’all never had parents who had jobs where they didn’t have a choice but to work and couldn’t afford to take a lot of time off for things and it shows like parents needing a grandparents help to watch kids or take kids places or help teach kids things doesn’t mean they don’t care or they don’t want to sometimes parents don’t have a choice sometimes they have to work

#yea this is about some of the shit i see people say about roy’s parents #i find it really troubling #working class or even poor parents #don’t not care about their kids when they have to decide that work comes first #especially if they’re trying to survive and especially if they have kids who clearly have aspire #aspirations #and they clearly did #he’s a pro athlete who was good enough at *nine years old* to be scouted by a premier league team #she’s a *doctor*#i really wish people weren’t so shitty about working class parents #and i’m #not saying you can’t assume he had shitty parents #i guess it’s fine #but some of the reasons y’all come up with are actually offensive and hurtful

had an entire mental breakdown during a piece on a rowing machine today and I kept thinking wow I’m rly having a Charles leclerc moment rn 😭

#if I see anyone calling him a bottler again I will be asking them for their athletic credentials #and if they have none then they need to shut up 🤨#like I feel this way abt sooo many differnt things and fan criticisms ig bc of my own experience even it I’m a yknow .#student athlete with high aspirations but obvs nothing abt national level #like being an athlete who takes urself seriously.. currently rowing is the thing in my life that’s taking up the most time and even #well whatever but it’s just so frustrating seeing people online who clearly have zero idea abt what it takes #talking shit abt mentality or whatever else like. I’m sorry but you don’t get it #one second of overthinking during a race (or for me also erg pieces) drastically messes up your rhythm and your pace and can very easily #lead to (in my case) issues like crabs which can completely destroy your race or yknow crashes #addendum overthinking as well completely takes you out of the mindset. the second you loose that you’re fucked and it’s so hard to get back #and then so so easy to spiral bc it’s a reallt fragile mentality you force yourself into ! you just don’t get it !#like it just makes me mad I know people are getting paid but that only makes the stakes and stress higher lol #i probably make no sense but like things are just frustrating me atm and I’m seeing too much of myself #in some of these people + seeing too much criticism online if things I as an athlete struggle with #bc we all do..
