Allies or Enemies by The Crane Wives is sooooo lawlight. Specifically L POV directly after Light regains his memories
“Are we allies or enemies? This will be the death of me
Remember when I could tell you not to smile when you were mad? And you would always crack And we’d both be laughing in the end Now you’re not so quick to forget”
Like AUGH. yep! Not sure what’s gonna happen next, who’s gonna do it, is he gonna die? He knows that someone’s not getting out of this alive. Is he dying literally? Or a metaphorical death of like. If you were here when I discovered phantoms by mariana’s trench know I’m obsessed with like. Them still “dying” when they have to go on living without each other. and like. The remember part being L reminiscing on when he and light. Well. They didn’t get along. But they had to work together and clearly they got along well enough to share a living space for however many months. Whereas now light remembers being Kira again. And so he’s not intentionally acting different but L can tell, L can read him to know how he holds onto resentments more, how he remembers more. OUGH. AUG. OW. I’m hurting myself. Actually wait I started in the middle but let’s go over the beginning too.
“The words I speak are wildfires and weeds They spread like some awful damn disease I swear I didn’t mean what I said I swear I didn’t mean it
Now listen close, you owe me ears for dropping eaves Forget it all, you caught me in a moment weak Sometimes I just can’t help myself Sometimes I can’t help myself at all”
You have to stretch your imagination a bit but this is very rain scene and a bit foot scene. You know from the anime, I’m pretty sure it wasn’t in the manga but idk I haven’t gotten to that part of the manga yet. Anyway! L being unsure of his words and thoughts, a moment of weakness, Very much that part of ep 25 when they’re on the rooftop in the rain and also a bit L in the infamous foot scene, though it’s not quiiitee right for that. Or we’ll everything is good for that but like there’s not Enough for that. There’s a lot going on there. But that’s what the rest of the song is for! Ok now back where we left off at the start of the post.
“Are we allies or enemies? This will be the death of me This will be the death of me All is fair in love and war, but I can’t fight with you anymore This will be the death of me”
Aaaaa. He wants to stop but he knows if he does he’s dead. He wants to just keep playing his games with Light, but he knows they’re at the finish line, if they keep playing they will reach the end and someone’s gonna die. He doesn’t want to stop playing, but he either stops now and whatever Kira is planning takes him out, or he keeps going an either he dies anyway or light does. The game is ending soon but he just wants to keep going, but he can’t, he can’t fight with light much longer, and he’s not even sure whether he wants to, if that’s the game he even wants most, but it’s the only one he has and there’s no other options. Someone’s gonna die and it’s probably gonna be him.
“What happens now? Do we have another go? Do we bow out and take our separate roads? I’ll admit I’ve had my doubts But I want to be let in, not out But I want to be let in, not out”
he’s not sure what’s gonna happen next. He’s not sure what he wants to happen next. he’s had his doubts about the Kira case before, but now he knows he’s right, and he doesn’t wanna stop just cause he’s confident he’s right, because he knows there’s more, he knows they’re more to see and understand, things he’s never even considered possible, and he wants to know and understand everything. He needs to know everything there is to know about Light and Kira, and he’s not sure which intrigues him more, but he’s not ready for there game to stop, for them to part ways. But he knows they will, he’s to smart to think this ends any other way. One of them is dying. He knows himself, and he knows Kira, and so he knows that this cannot end with both of them still standing.
I’m obesssedd with them!!! New song for my lawlight playlist aw yeah. Also the song is really good I’m gonna listen to more of the band this is pretty cool

Ik this is more on the vague side, but ever since i read ur Irminsul headcannons about the reader in Imposter!SAGAU I got this idea, what if:
The reader could just remove info about themselves in the big tree lol - i mean, Scarab did it before might as well try it, no?
Irminsul itself might let us in without the permission of Nahida so we could go in undetected
Since looking through the memories of Irminsul might be like exploring an endless library, as long as you set your mind to it, you'd be able to find that info, like for example:
Memories about the "Creator"
Now, by now, you already know what I'm getting at, right?
Once reader finally figures out how to erase stuff by trying removing certain minor parts of Irminsul, they try to erase the entire memory of the "Creator" ever existing
Not as in like, they would forget that you were the Creator or that one exists, nor what they look like, but just the horrible memories and basically everything that the "Creator" did/made
But now, one would wonder, what would happen now?
I'd guess that, since the "Creator" is believed to love everyone, why is the one on the throne ruling and acting so... Tyrannical?
In my opinion, I feel like a rebellion would ensue sooner or later
But then, since Scarab lost his own memories when he removed himself from Irminsul, wouldn't that also mean the same thing for the "Creator" themselves?
Anyways, feel free to procrastinate and take your time on my take on reader being able to remove info on Irminsul hehe (bc honestly I'd also do that lmao)
Signing off, 🐱 Anon
WE GOT A 🐱 ANON NOW, BOIS—OPEN THE CURTAINS, OPEN THE LIGHTS! CUE THE CLAPPING AND CHEERING AUDIO TRACKS!—
Alright I'm done making a fuss about that lol—here's the headcanon/jot note version of a oneshot of everything that happens since my motivation was running low on oneshots/short stories.
Disclaimers: N/A
Reader Has Entered Irminsul...
Reader is in their Hunted Arc rn, getting chased by all of Teyvat under the "Creator's" orders. They keep running and running and running...
They're getting tired, and they soon find themselves in a dead end. They think of all the places they haven't been to yet: the desert of Sumeru, Inazuma, Mt. Aocang, Mt. Hulao, Wuwang Hill, irminsul—
Yeah, you guessed it. Just by thinking of irminsul, Reader has made it to the big 'ol Tree of Knowledge :D
Reader is shocked—surprised. But not for long—because they start to panic. They aren't sure if Nahida was on their side or not, like what the sagau fanfics say.
In fact, Reader is mainly scared that she already knows they're here.
That is, before the Reader feels a sudden urge to make it to the Tree of Knowledge. As if irminsul is calling for them specifically. They're weary of what this all means, but at the same time, intrigued.
It was the first time they felt like this. So, naturally, they followed what their gut was telling them, hoping that they won't regret this decision.
Reader gets close to the tree, surprised that they managed to make their way to it without requiring access from Nahida or even getting lost just to navigate the route to get there.
The moment they touch irminsul's trunk, however, the Reader feels a sudden blast of information, as if Teyvat itself is giving them the resources to know what to do.
By the time Nahida feels something from irminsul and she arrives to see what's up, it's too late. The Reader's already made the change.
All tyranny of the "Creator" was erased. None of it happened. Not once, not ever. The Palace of the Creator was never created, the Imposter themself never took on any throne...nothing.
Reader comes back to Mondstadt, hoping that what they did worked.
It did. No one remembers what the Creator looks like. There was no Imposter impersonating them. Reader was free.
They were free! They did it! They could travel the entire world now without risking getting killed! They could finally find a portal home!
Except...they forgot the Traveler existed. But even the Traveler is glad there is no more tyranny.
Andd, that's all I got! Sorry if it's short lol—I ran out of ideas for this :') I hope it's okay for y'all.
See you all around! :D

Ghost Rebel Side Notes: So, as I've been writing this, I'm going to give you guys a little update on something that you all really enjoyed in the past.
So, you know "Forever In My Hold" and "A Path Beyond Hope" oneshots? Yes, this is regarding of the little series that has been created. I have decided that I will be making a Part 3, but it will take a very long while. And it will be the LAST PART of the series. I just can't find the motivation to continue it longer.
Also: Should I do a remake of Live or Die? It's a very old writing of mine, back when I first began this blog. I'm not sure if y'all want to read it, but idk if I want to make a remake. Please let me know :)

Adalama, The Act Of Connecting, Sensing, Experiencing, And Influencing The Being Of Other Individuals And Constructs
Adalama is the act of connecting, sensing, experiencing, and influencing the being of other individuals and constructs by expanding your kna so that it interacts with theirs. Adalama can be helpful to identify specific types of kna that are a part of people, places, or things. It is important to remember that Adalama is not only a spiritual process and is also a mental and a physical one, and by paying attention to all of these factors, one can gain insight. Because of this, it includes subtle sounds and vibrations, even the processes of induction and abduction. Adalama is the whole of all your senses as they extend outwards from you and the senses you give to others. It is your kna reading the knama of others. Knowing and learning to use Adalama can help you gain information on the world around you.
You do not have to be born with a divine gift to use this skill. You already possess it and use it, and you have to remember how to. All you have to do is be open to your experiences and learn how to progress. As long as you take time to progress its growth, you will be able to learn and use it to its full potential. Everybody has these skills to some extent, but they may not be proficient enough to get the full experience out of it and need to be exercised to allow you to perceive the world.
This technique will be incredibly useful on the rest of your magickal path because of the various situations you can use it in. It will allow you to tell the difference between different forms of kna based on how they feel and express themselves to you. Making it easier to build a strong connection to what you want so that you can work with it and identify it. It is used within Libratumilera to assist with healing by identifying specific kna within the skaknao.
Every kna has a different feeling to it. The skills to tell the difference between kna will not come overnight. It takes some training, but eventually, you will get it. You will eventually be able to differentiate between certain types of kna based on the feeling you get from these factors as you reach your skaknao out to them. How well-versed you are in this practice and how sensitive you are to feeling kna will determine what information you get and how much of it you will receive. The more you train the ability and the more that you become aware of kna and how it interacts with you, the better you will be at this.
Seeing:
This allows you to see kna with your inner eyes and perceive sites that you would never have seen without it. Through Adalama, you will receive images, colors, and visions that will allow you to interpret the kna around you to gain insight. What you may see while using Adalama is easy to interpret and understand because most entities are already very used to interpreting things with their eyes. Seeing something in your inter eye would look a lot like recalling a memory in your head, with how clear it is depending on the entity receiving it. This is an excellent skill to get the hang of if you are a visual person and will significantly improve how you experience your craft. Visualization will help you to better envision specific shapes and constructs in your mind's eye. This will also allow your mind's eye to be more open to seeing things in it and will significantly increase your Adalama because you are using your mind's eye more. Always Pay attention to see if any images enter your mind so that you can try to interpret them.
Hearing:
Adalama allows you to hear kna through what I would like to call your mind's ears. This will enable you to perceive noises, sounds, and other audio stimulants from the spiritual planes of existence. This will allow you to hear voices, audio cues, and maybe even kna itself if you become proficient enough in it. This is great for people who are verbal and need to hear things to gain insight easier. Experiencing this will sound like disembodied audible sounds, but with no discernible source, a lot like when you hear someone call your name. If you can learn to trust what you are hearing, you can communicate excellently with the entities around you. Sound awareness will make you more sensitive to the sounds around you, helping to progress your ability to hear and pick up on kna, usually unperceived sounds. Learn to try to feel into music. You can do this by listening closely to your favorite songs and trying to feel the kna behind them. Try to imagine sounds happening in your head. This will allow your magick ears to get more use to trying to hear sounds that are not there.
Smelling:
Adalama is also your ability to smell spiritually, and it's like perceiving odors and fragrances that do not have any known source in your surroundings. This is an useful way to get your perception via smells you associate with other constructs or information. This process is not done with your physical nose but will still smell the same way. Through the interaction of these smells, you will gain insight into the information around you. Try to imagine smells appearing in your vicinity that are not presently there. Smell things, and see if you can get information on that thing you shouldn't be able to. Pretty much what I'm saying is go out and smell things. Pay attention to any smells that come into your perception so that you can analyze them.
Touching:
Adalama can be done by simply touching something. You can gain so much insight into the construct you are making contact with. Once you get good enough at Adalama, you won't even have to touch the physical object to gain insight into its kna. All you would have to do is feel the kna around it. This can be done with any part of your body but primarily with your hands. Feel the kna around you with a touch can help you in your craft by being an efficient way to feel kna. Taking different objects into your hand while trying to feel into them is a great way to train and hone your skills with Adalama. Pass your hand over objects, and see if you can get a sense of where they have been or the kna they produce.
Tasting:
Adalama is also the ability to spiritually taste things, even if they do not reside in your physical mouth. If you know how to taste things in the mind, and from this experience, you will be able to gain insight into the kna that you are tasting. In your mind, try to taste people's kna to see if you can tell the difference in its flavors, essence, and substance. Whenever you taste something, try to focus on that taste to get used to the sense of taste.
Feeling:
Adalama is also the sense that will allow you to feel into information and read it just from the feelings you are getting, without any other stimulus tipping you off to that information. In this practice, you are feeling the information straight, you get no other signs, but you know it. This is a way to sense the world around you. Learning to trust your gut is a very important part of Adalama. You can learn to differentiate between the information you create versus the information that comes to you via your perception. It is also very important to be aware of your thoughts, emotions, and feelings to gain insight into them and your world. With Adalama, you can pick up on everything an entity may feel. It is a profound personal insight that allows you to experience things from others' perspectives, at least in an emotional sense.
The process of Adalama:
1) First, you want to find a person, place, or thing that you would like to read the kna of. This can be anything you can focus upon, even if it is not in your immediate vicinity. This can be anything that exists physically, spiritually, or even mentally.
2) You will need to get into a meditative state, center, and ground next. Then begin to focus on the entity or construct that you have selected. You may want to do a kavaa speech or movement to will your kna towards the target. You could also Place a hand upon the divinity you want to read into and close your eyes. You would also be able to go through calling out its name to focus on it. While you do this process, it is important to instill its being within your mind.
3) Say "La," and see yourself connecting with the kna. Then Say the word "Kna," focusing on the kna, and visualize it in your mind's eye as strongly as possible. Visualize yourself coming in contact with that construct or entity, and pay attention to how your visualization feels and changes.
4) Say the word "O" meaning ascendancy, and see the kna begin to glow in your mind's eye. Say the word "Yamasa," meaning divine, and after saying this, try to see if you get any impressions from the kna you have been focusing on. It may take a moment for it to appear to you, but you will be able to experience it within your mind's eye. Now stick in the state and see if you can't feel anything. It may feel like pressure or tingling or could even be some form of emotion. You're looking for changes in your being now that it is connected to the other construct, whether they come physically, mentally, or spiritually. In this process, you need to listen to your divine nature so that you can interpret what you're becoming. This kna message can be translated by you into usable information. This information can show itself in many different ways, so be ready to receive any sign that may be explaining some information to you.
5) Once you are done feeling into the construct, all you have to do to stop is to cut off the flow of kna that you are pushing at it, then center and ground. Then you will be able to go along with your day.

I’m trying to do a nice series compilation of danmeis to read in time for New Year’s maybe! Anyway also just a note that all the images I use are either from the official manhua, donghua, audio dramas OR official artwork as provided by official China bookstores when they do prints (and have obtained permission from artists on Lofter to use their artwork for merch/prints etc.)
- Part of Min’s ‘Why You Should Read’ Series -
Summary:
Yu She (the one in black) and Zhong Wan (the one in green) were close friends for a short period of time when they were younger, but unfortunately their identities and positions placed them on opposite sides of the fight for the throne (for their parents’ generations). Yu She’s family supported the Second Prince and Zhong Wan was taken in by the Sixth Prince’s family when he was younger, but in the end it was the Second Prince who ended up getting to the throne, while the Sixth Prince was accused of treason and died somewhere far away at war after being captured.
Zhong Wan’s only wish was to keep the Sixth Prince’s children - Xuan Rui and a pair of twins, Xuan Yu and Xuan Congxin - safe, and so he moves them to another province and asks the Emperor (the former Second Prince) to demote Xuan Rui’s status to prove that they are no threat to the Emperor, if only to stay alive for another day.
However, their days of hardship have only just begun in their new home, and Zhong Wan decides to namedrop Yu She, whose family is so powerful now, to make sure that other people will not bully his charges. He claims that Yu She loves him and that he was wooing Zhong Wan back in the days they knew each other so that officials and others would treat the children under his care better. A few years pass and Yu She doesn’t expose Zhong Wan. Zhong Wan thinks they can go on like this forever, until the Emperor asks Xuan Rui and the twins to head back to the palace for a visit.
Zhong Wan meets Yu She again, but the boy he knew, who was gentle, a stickler for rules and a proper, well-mannered person who always got embarrassed and irritated when Zhong Wan flirted with or teased him, has changed almost completely. Cue palace conspiracies again, brothers fighting for the throne, scheming consorts etc. XD
Read:
Novel (Online) | Novel (Print) - August 2020 | Novel Translations | Manhua | Audio Drama
Characters:
1.  钟宛 Zhong Wan - Also called Zhong Gui Yuan (归远) and his childhood nickname is 宝宝 (bao bao = baby), something he’s very embarrassed about. He’s a righteous but outgoing, sometimes flirtatious young man who lost his parents when he was very young, and then was taken in by the Sixth Prince and his wife, who married each other for political reasons and weren’t close until Zhong Wan turned up and got them to interact more with each other, helping them to fall in love, and that’s how he got three more siblings - Xuan Rui, Xuan Congxin and Xuan Yu. The prince and his wife doted on him a lot, but he was very aware always that he was not their son, and after the Sixth Prince was accused and died, he took it on himself to keep the other three children alive by any means possible.
Tumblr media
He spent a month or so in jail after the Sixth Prince was accused of treason as interrogators attempted to torture him into speaking out against the Sixth Prince, but managed to keep silent. Yu She rescued him by paying an exorbitant bail for him (he wouldn’t know about this until later), and he stayed with Yu She for almost half a year until he ‘ran away’ to take care of his three siblings, so to speak.
He starts to fabricate stories about how Yu She likes him, and was wooing him, but they weren’t exactly fake entirely because he extrapolated from actual events (when he tried to tease/flirt with Yu She so he would let him go) that were actually pretty like flirtatious in nature (the both of them are entirely oblivious).
His priority will always be the safety of the children, but when he returns to the Imperial City and realizes that Yu She has changed, he begins to plot to stay at his side, worried about him (and also to rediscover his feelings for Yu She).
Also has a weak body as he was poisoned when he was 15-16 by someone close to him, faints and gets sick frequently in the novel hahaha (I have a type).
2. 郁赦 Yu She - His courtesy name is Zi You (子宥), which Zhong Wang calls him by. He is the only son of Marquis Yu, and was study mates with Zhong Wan when they were younger. After his parents contributed to the downfall of the Sixth Prince (as they supported the Second Prince) and Zhong Wan ends up imprisoned, Yu She pays A LOT OF MONEY to get him out after Zhong Wan is basically put up for sale to anyone who wants him, to keep him safe from those who want to harm/humiliate him (because Zhong Wan is so handsome/beautiful as well).
Tumblr media
He was originally unable to handle Zhong Wan, who keeps teasing him and accusing him of liking him etc., and let Zhong Wan go when he plotted to leave him, understanding that he had a duty to keep the Sixth Prince’s children safe. In the years that Zhong Wan is away, he discovers a secret that causes him to engage in self-destructive behaviour (talking back to the Emperor, ingesting deadly poison etc.), and realizes that his parents are not who he thought they were. He becomes unpredictable, either doing dangerous things, or refusing to do normal things (instead of studying or reading for example, he spends most of his days reading published fanfiction about him and Zhong Wan).
When he first heard of the rumours about him and Zhong Wan, he descends into this spiral of doubt, wondering if what Zhong Wan fabricated was true and if it was his memory that was wrong. He falls sick thinking so hard about the time he spent with Zhong Wan before LMAO, before deciding that he does like Zhong Wan, but until Zhong Wan returned to the city, he never once thought of acting on it.
3. Xuan Rui, Xuan Congxin & Xuan Yu
Xuan Rui is the Sixth Prince’s oldest son and was old enough to be aware of what was going on when his parents died. He’s very timid, paranoid and easily swayed by others, while his younger siblings, six-year old twins Xuan Congxin (left below) and Xuan Yu (right below) were brought up entirely by Zhong Wan, and Congxin in particular is much more mature/steady in personality than her two older brothers, and also knows to always stand on Zhong Wan’s side.
Tumblr media
4. Lin Si - Zhong Wan’s childhood friend who was also brought up by the Sixth Prince and his wife. He’s mute, and a bodyguard of sorts, helping Zhong Wan to gather information from the city while he’s away. After Zhong Wan left with the Sixth Prince’s children, Lin Si stays with the current 4th Prince, and also falls in love with him. It’s unrequited until he kisses the prince and then disappears, leaving the prince to look everywhere for him XD It’s hinted that they do end up together.
Other Things I Like in the Novel:
Zhong Wan’s childhood nickname is 宝宝 lmaooooo and Yu She threatens to torture Lin Si (like about to torture him), and Lin Si was like ‘what does he want to know that he would torture me for it’, then finds out that Yu She is about to hurt him to find out what Zhong Wan’s nickname and he’s like wtf??!!!
Yu She has this steward who was bullied by Zhong Wan a lot while he was staying there with them over that half a year, and is also the biggest Yu She/Zhong Wan shipper even though Zhong Wan was really the troublemaker then
When they find out who the person who poisoned Zhong Wan was, Congxin is the first person to step up for Zhong Wan, and turns against the person who poisoned him
Yu She keeps forcing Zhong Wan to read out their fanfiction novels aloud, much to Zhong Wan’s mortification, but after Zhong Wan realizes he likes Yu She for real, he starts being really forward with his want for him, and it is Yu She who gets embarrassed
Yu She is so embarrassed that he schedules days where Zhong Wan can/cannot touch him, and sets limits to the number of times he can kiss him etc. LMAOOOOO in the beginning of their relationship I frickin died

DIABOLIK LOVERS MORE, MORE BLOOD Vol.11 Sakamaki Laito [Track 5 + Epilogue]

Original title: 巻き戻る愛
Source: Diabolik Lovers More, More Blood Vol. 11 Sakamaki Laito [CD not owned by me]
Audio: Here
Seiyuu: Hirakawa Daisuke
Translator’s note: GOD THINGS DO NOT GO WELL IN THIS TRACK. I do think it’s super neat what they did with the throwback though, but I also hate how all MMB CDs end with these huge cliffhangers so if you want a ‘happy ending’, you’re basically forced to pay more money and get the Deluxe Edition because the story almost always gets wrapped up in the extra track which only comes with the more expensive version.
This CD was requested by @akumacaron who also provided the audio for this so please give them a huge thanks for being so kind to share it with all of us!

Track 5: Looping Love
“Why do you seem so surprised? Well, I guess I can’t really blame for you for thinking  someone like me would do this out of his sheer enjoyment, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to have fun with something which belonged to that guy! ...You know, this was the result of me thinking things through in my own way.”
You tilt your head to the side.
“Exactly! I’ve been thinking...While watching you give me the cold shoulder. I mean, think about it...Lately you’ve been showing me that kind of attitude the whole time, haven’t you? You don’t notice when I’m standing next to you, or when I sneak into your room, you act as if it’s the most normal thing in the world. If it was just that, I might have been able to cope with it, but whenever I sucked your blood, you’d get swept away by the pleasure right away! It was almost as if it had become a habit to you. This is basically what they call a relationship rut, right?”
You try and calm him down.
“That’s not quite true, is it? In the end, you have become used to the pain of my fangs, haven’t you? In the past, you would desperately make a run for it, fearing for your life! How about right now?”
You go quiet.
“See? You have no counter arguments, do you? Well...I guess it’s a given your feelings have changed since then. We share a deep bond now after all. Even so, a rut like this isn’t good, is it? Dating out of pure ‘habit’ is a nightmare! That’s why I figured we should take a trip down memory lane and enjoy the same kind of thrill as we did in the past.”
*Rustle rustle*
*Cling*
“As if on cue, I got my hands on this hourglass, so I just couldn’t help but use it, you see? Fufu...Just as I predicted, your reactions were perfect! Overwhelmed by the pleasure piling up one after another from an experience you never even fantomed could ever happen! That gaze looking up at me with sheer frustration...I couldn’t get enough of it! Wasn’t it humiliating? To have me toy around with you as I pleased. Aah~ I guess that wasn’t all. You once again were confronted straight up with just how lewd you can be after all. I’m sure you felt quite a bit of shame as well?”
You frown.
“However~ That made for a nice stimulus, right? Unlike usual, you got to experience yourself fall completely apart...I’m sure you felt it for the first time in a long time, right? The pleasure from being completely helpless. Even right now, I can see them lurking in the back of your eyes. Those feelings wishing to be oppressed and made feel good.”
You try and deny it.
“Nn~ Look at you say that. Even though I’m sure you enjoyed it as well! Heh...But, I don’t mind. Resist me like that~ It seems like your reactions only become better, the more you deny the pleasure after all. Let’s love each other like this from here on out. While seeking for those mysterious stimuli which can satisfy you~ Nfu~ Well then...What should we do next? Want to go all out, beyond the point of no return? After all, once I rewind time, it will be as if none of it ever happened anyway! Aah~ It will remain in your memories, so I’m sure it’ll be difficult for you to cope with the shame~”
You try and steal the hourglass.
*Cling cling*
“...Hey! I won’t give you the hourglass...!”
*Rustle rustle*
“No, you can’t do that...! ...W-Wai...B-Bitch-chan!? It’s dangerouーーAh!”
*SHATTER*
“Aah...It broke...”
You say sorry.
“Ah...Yeah. You don’t to apologize but...This might be bad. If an hourglass with magic locked inside breaks, the energy from inside will obviously...”
*GROOOOOOWL*
“Aah!! I knew it...!! Let’s hurry up and get out of this room! If we take this magic which can rewind time head-on, we’llーー!”
*BOOM*
“Uwaah!!”
*Tick tock - Tick tock - Tick tock - Tick tock*
ーーー
Laito enters the bathroom.
*Thud*
“Hello~ Laito speaking!” (1)
You seem startled.
“...Wait. Ahahaha~ Bitch-chan! That’s quite the sexy look you’re rocking? But what a shame! If I had come just a little earlier, I would have been able to closely observe you getting changed!”
You grow restless.
“What are you looking around for? I doubt you’ll find anything interesting just from scanning the bathroom?”
You ask him if time turned back.
“Hm? Time? What do you mean ‘it rewinded’?”
You explain.
“Listen, I’m sorry but...What are you talking about? If you wish to have a philosophical conversation about whether time can rewind or not, I suggest you hit up someone other than me. Besides, what is this ‘hourglass’ you’re talking about?”
You desperately try and get him to remember.
“I’ve got no idea what you’ve been talking about this whole time? What exactly am I forgetting about? Aren’t you the one who has got their memories all jumbled up? I don’t know why exactly you’re this confused...but shall I teach? From zero, slowly and carefully...You remember the day you arrived at this manor, don’t you? And you’re also aware that us six brothers are Vampires, right? Then, you were kept here as our prey. Because this obscene blood of yours is so very delicious~ Right?”
You frown.
“Why do you seem so shocked at this point? You are our prey, aren’t you? You live here having your blood sucked by us day in, day out. You’ve been pierced by my fangs plenty of times as well, haven’t you?”
*Rustle*
“If you’ve forgotten, shall I make you remember? Look, I sucked from here the other day, didn’t I?”
You push him away.
*Thud*
“Woah there~ ...There’s only a wall over there, you know? I wonder where you’re hoping to run away to? I’d say it’s about time you stop struggling in vain?”
*WOOSH*
“See? ...Caught you.”
You flinch.
“And? Do you remember what you are to us now? Personally, I’m not interested in you as anything but mere prey. ...Well, I’m sure you’re only feigning ignorance.”
You tell him time has really turned back.
“Hm...You’re still saying that? Going on about ‘having rewinded too far’ or this ‘hourglass’. If you’re hoping to catch my attention that way, it’s having the opposite effect. Begging to me in a sexy way would do a much better job at that.”
You insist.
“So you’re still persisting, huh? Fufu...Perhaps it’s time you cool down your head a little? A disobedient girl might as well be dead to me after all.”
Laito opens the door to the shower room.
“Come on. Let’s take a shower as a little change of pace.”
*Rustle rustle*
“What do you think? The infamous bridal carry~ (2) Girls can’t resist this sorta stuff, can they? Human females are such maidens in the weirdest ways, aren’t they? Well then, keep still and don’t make a fuss, okay?”
*Rustle rustle*
“Ahahaha~! I just told you to keep still and now this? ...If you cause me too much trouble, I’ll kill you, okay?”
You immediately stop struggling.
“Mm~ Thank god! You’ve finally calmed down, huh?  …You are much cuter that way~”
Laito walks into the bathing area.
“Aaand we’ve arrived at our destination~”
He throws you into the tub.
*SPLASH*
"Thank god the tub was filled with water! If not, your whole body would have gotten broken into the pieces! Nfu~ ...How does it feel to take a bath with your pajamas on? Ah! You’re already soaking wet! It’s because you tried to run away from me.”
*Splash splash*
“You can’t. You have to stay in there until your body warms up. Seems like you can’t even take a bath by yourself, huh? I’m just so kind, so I suppose I’ll offer you a helping hand...”
He grabs the shower head.
“Come on, I’ll spray it on you from above. If I do this, I’m sure you’ll warm up in no time!”
*PSSSSSHHHHHH*
“Ahahaha! Is it painful? You shouldn’t look away! You have to face this way and endure it!”
You try and beg him to stop.
“Hm~? What’s the matter? Are you trying to say something? However, if you open your mouth, the water will get inside and it’ll only become even harder to breathe, don’t you think? Fufufu~ You seem to be having a rough time. What’s wrong? Is it rough? Come on, try your best and beg for my mercy! ‘Please! Spare me!’, just like that!”
*PSSSSSHHHHHH*
He turns off the shower head.
“Nfu~ Fufu...Are you crying? ...Nice, I love that face. It really gets me going...You’re still gasping for air, right? If you were to have your blood sucked in this state, I’m sure it’d be extremely painful~ Make sure to endure it, okay?”
Laito bites you.
*Gulp gulp gulp*
“...Haah~ Aah...It’s sweeter than usual...As if it’ll burn the back of my throat...Did you get that aroused? In that case, shall I do even more? ...Ah. I have to be careful I don’t suck you dry and kill you. After all...”
*Rustle*
“...You are my favorite prey. Remember?”
Track 6: Epilogue
“...Oh? Did you lose consciousness? It’s dull without any reaction though...Mmh...”
*Smooch*
“...Nfu~ You’re twitching even while out cold. You really are such a lewd girl...Say, if you won’t wake up, who knows what I might do to you? Ah, but I suppose that could be interesting as well. I’ll have my way with you from head to toe, yet you are completely defenseless...And then when you wake up, you’ll have absolutely no clue what happened. I’m sure you’ll turn white as a sheet~ Your imagination will continue spiralling into the worst case scenarios...I wonder how it feels, knowing your own body has been tainted, yet you don’t even remember? Well, I’m not exactly interested though. As long as you get corrupted, turned into a complete and utter mess, that alone feels great...Don’t you agree?”
*Rustle*
*Smooch*
ーー THE END ーー
--> PROCEED TO ANOTHER STORY [DELUXE EDITION]
Translation notes
(1) This sentence is actually an exact copy of the very first line he says in his Do-S Kyuuketsu CD, hence why I decided to translate it the same way as well! He literally just says ‘Hello, it’s Laito’ though, but that sounds so stiff. xD
(2) In Japanese it is called お姫様抱っこ or ‘ohime-sama dakko’ which literally means ‘princess carry’.

Okay, I know I just posted something else, but this has been nagging me since I saw it in Ch24 (Loner) and mentioning it briefly last post just sent me down a rabbit hole of speculation, so ignoring that any plot holes are due to the game’s absolutely stellar writing (/s)…
(about Rachel’s mental break, spoilers for ch9, 24, and MS:R)
MSR was released quite some time after Season 1 and really has shades of what the plotline was supposed to be for Exos Saga since the tone was noticeably much darker than Zeon’s Adventures in the Remake have been, ending with the infamous reveal that It was Rachel All Along who killed the Emperor.
MSR ended with Rachel concocting some bizarro plan to pin the murder on Ramge (or rather, let the association Ramge did it stick), then help Ramge escape with the express instruction to travel to Saint West, where Rachel’s status as King’s Guard could get him off the hook.  ... ....  ......... it makes even less sense now, almost half a year after the fact.  But that was the plan!
Tumblr media
Looking at Rachel’s original introduction in Ch9, specifically when Ramge shows up, Ramge’s surprised by Rachel’s appearance in NVF—and Ramge’s not exactly a great actor or liar, so this reaction was genuine:
Tumblr media
Of course, this was written long before MSR’s release. Rachel as the culprit might’ve not been the endgame then, but I doubt that, going by Ramge’s reticience to Baraka’s threat and Baraka’s subsequent reaction in Ch8.  So what if the writers actually Big Brained the whole thing and Ramge’s reaction makes sense because Rachel was supposed to be at Saint West(ish), waiting to “catch” him?
Tumblr media
Rachel reaction to Ramge’s surprise at meeting him in NVF is a statement of confusion:
Tumblr media
Doesn’t seem to make sense if there had been a plan to… well, basically catch Ramge and bring him to Saint West to clear him of all charges.  But Rachel could also be lying, trying to keep up the act that he had nothing to do with the assassination and was just being a good friend to his bestest buddy.
So. Shoddy writing? Cover-up?
Or is this seriously some big brain shit that I only just realized makes sense if we go with the whole “actually yes, it is a split personality thing.”
Now, I don’t think it’s the split-personality type where it’s two different people, Good Boy and Bad Boy, a Jekyll and Hyde. His personality in Saga made it pretty clear that he was very aware of his intrusive thoughts and accepts them as his own, but doesn’t act on them cause he’s generally a decent person until something triggers his trauma (aka: his inability to protect).
I think it’s more like a switch, something that turns off his moral judgment and in doing so, shuts down that ‘nice’ part of him. Sort of like, I guess, you can say the Hulk?
(Hm.  It’s hard to explain; I actually had an OC like this, where it was the id overriding the ego, but not in the sense that it was two distinct personalities with two separate set of memories. It would be akin to sleepwalking, where you did things without realizing, and ‘wake up’ to those acts being done and recognizing they were done, in fact, by you, but just by a part of your brain that normally isn’t ‘on’ because the other part of your brain was ‘on.’  Something like that.)
This could be further supplemented (and why I’m even yammering about this) by the scene in Ch23 (Loner) where, at the end, Rachel is lost and broken with despair and his final line is (the line is the same in Korean):
Tumblr media
As the screen fades to black, there is a very distinct creaking sound like a door opening, which is an audio cue the game has never done before and considering how the story’s format is done, singles it out as an incredibly important audio cue.
When Rachel shows up again, he’s rampaging through the enemy, blind to friend or foe, and his artwork has changed into his Awakening Fatecore, Executor of the Battlefield:
Tumblr media
The translation uses the ‘divided personalities’ thing, which is why there’s a subset of fans who subscribe to the multiple personality theory, but he’s never given any indication in Heroes or Saga of having an alt-in-a-Jekyll-and-Hyde way so much as holding homocidal impulses and intrusive thoughts.  When he killed the Emperor, there was no ‘yeah I’m another person’ act or even in the Heowon comic where Emma found him surrounded by the dead assassins he killed there was no indication another separate personality was at play. Even his “Now assassins fear me” world-map line is very self-aware. He doesn’t have alts of good and bad—he’s a berserker who copes through murder.
So I think Awakening basically broke the off switch.  He’s always sleepwalking now.  Intrusive thoughts are just thoughts; he operates quite normally but he doesn’t try to suppress his cruelty.  He hulked up. (LOL at the idea of this twinky boy hulking up tho lolololol)  Basically his MO is exactly as described by his Core Memory group i am extremely concerned for both his and ramge’s safety right now www:
Tumblr media
(I’ve been slowly hammering at an AU where Ramge and Rachel meet later in life when Rachel’s already king, and Garff refers to him as a benevolent tyrant. lol)
Anyhoo, all of that is to explain that when he killed the Emperor, along with his actions thereafter, it could be argued the switch flipped off on his “nice” self. His have-no-compunctions self sleepwalks, does the deed and attempts a cleanup, and the nice one doesn’t "wake up” until Ramge’s gone. So Rachel-as-usual came back to find that Ramge left and the Emperor’s dead. Of course, he knows Ramge didn’t actually do it (BROS GOTTA STICK TOGETHER) but surmised Shufraken orchestrated it:
Tumblr media
Now, I love Rachel and I 100% believe he’s a liar (it’s all over my stories, after all), but keeping up this deception just seems so bizarre in the context of YOU ARE THE ONE THAT DID IT AND YOU ARE BLAMING YOUR BEST FRIEND WHO YOU LIKE LITERALLY KILLED THE EMPEROR TO PROTECT SO I AM VERY CONFUSED???? but maybe this is all unreliable narrator and my joke post about how Rachel actually is just fucking with Ramge’s head with all that loyalty nonsens nd ahgkl ahg;h
-TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES PLEASE STAND BY-
As I was saying, this could also mean that his whole “so how do I clear Ramge’s name” and “let’s escape to Brunn” weren’t contradicted by MSR, but a huge big brain by the writers that Rachel legitimately doesn’t remember what actually happened.
Am… am I giving the writers too much credit? This is a ridiculous twist I could see a fanfic writer doing but… would the game writers actually do something like this?  Am I just big braining myself?!
Man, I think I love this character too much; I’m sitting here literally arguing with myself if the writers actually managed to do this kind of weird-ass plot twist or if they’re just making it as they go along as they have with basically all other aspects of the game.
(it’s probably definitely the latter but they have surprised me a number of times concerning rachel so i’m buckled in for this ride)

Empathic emotion in film - essay - The perks of being a wallflower
The Perks of Being a Wallflower. The 2012 film, starring Logan Lerman, Emma Watson and Ezra Miller is a masterclass on vehemence. Perfectly expressing the epitome of teenage existence. A story which barely avoids becoming an epitaph for our main character, Charlie. A beautiful life so close to being lost, a theme so violently relatable. The Perks of Being a Wallflower is an anthology of tangents, telling the totality of trauma. A story of being ‘both happy and sad’(7:44). Charlie grows and loves, yet within that is a constant reminder, an eternal echo of memories unknown. In this scene, the writer of the original book, the screenplay and the director, Steven Chbosky works with Lerman to reveal the insides of Charlie’s mind and convey Charlie’s crescendo as the realisation and weight of his life crashes down on him. A pure display of emotion and control over the emotion of an audience via the forms of cinematography, sound and mise en scene colliding to create one of the most powerful and memorable scenes in all of cinema.
The cinematography by Andrew Dunn is exquisite. Although released in 2012, The Perks of Being a Wallflower was shot entirely on 35mm celluloid film. A creative choice that helps tell the story as the celluloid’s noise and softness act as another character in the scene, helping sell the setting of the film in the ambiguous 90’s and it exemplifies Charlie as a person and his foreboding internal struggles, inviting the audience to empathise with Charlie’s emotional state. Shooting on film adds texture to the shot that is not found in the ultra crisp cinema cameras we know today. In the relatively mundane world of suburban Pittsburgh, Tarkovsky like texture is not available, so the in-camera texture of celluloid adds interest and movement into sometimes still shots, while the noise captures the chaos that is Charlie’s mind. The background pandemonium created by the film draws the audience into the world, into the scene and into Charlie’s mind. A chaos and despair that is personified through colour.
Colour is not expressly used in this scene and that is the power of it. The overexposed sky eradicates the tranquil blue from the scene. The walls of his house washed in a dull beige. In his room, the walls, furniture and Charlie himself are cast in shadow. The life of each shot, colour, is sucked out, swept away and neglected. The absence of vibrancy limn the feeling of pain and suffering that Charlie is currently enduring. His memories even follow this same suit. Dark, dingey scenes with deep shadows that shrink even the brightest colours, like the yellow of his sleeping sister’s sleeping bag as he is told not to ‘wake’ (1:25:16, 1:25:39) her. This use of earth tones, dark and boring colours, helps emphasise the low of Charlie’s life. Now that Sam and Patrick have left, the reason to keep going has faded, much like the colours in the scene. The realisation of Aunt Helen and Charlie's ‘little secret’ (1:25:21, 1:25:53) appears through the colour and is accentuated by the lighting.
The lighting in the scene is natural and practical. The front door and hallway are lit only by the windows in the house creating a dark tunnel leading to his room, a visual cue to the darkness he is entering. His room is dark, lit only by the sun entering through his only window. From the straight shot, the harsh 5500 kelvin lighting puts Charlie and his emotions on display. No shadows on Charlie, Dunn and Chbosky’s way of showing he has nowhere to hide. His pain has reached its boiling point. The single lighting setup also creates an agonizing attachment to reality and reminds the audience that this film is real, the emotions are real and Dunn is telling the audience that the danger Charlie is in, is real.
Sound is the engineer of emotion and that notion does not differ in this scene. To begin the scene, a non-diegetic symphonic swell pulls the audience into the brittle, fragmented mind of our main character. The dialogue from Aunt Helen forms in the center of our collective consciousness, just as it does for Charlie. The shattering of Aunt Helen’s car window sends us back into the present where we can witness his whirlpool of pique represented as the piano lulls the viewer through his mental wounds, inviting us into his life. As the piano plays, it motivates the cut to his childhood photos and the visualisation of his innocence lost. As Charlie revels in his guilt for an atrocity he didn’t commit, ‘It’s all my fault’ (1:25:46 - 1:25:52) repeats with the audience throughout the scene both diegetically and in the non-diegetic cadence of the chords. Every sound actuates the visuals via J cuts and audio match cuts. This editing technique links the audience’s eyes, ears and emotions together allowing for us, as the viewer, to latch onto Charlie and become one with him. The sound design of this scene allows a change in the audience dynamic from spectator to participant. The non-diegetic inflating drones expand, heightening our empathy and highlighting his turmoil and as the score introduces more chords to us, creating a cohesion between Charlie and his woe’s, an artificial disarray tethers his memories to the audience’s audio-visual experience. Lerman’s repetition of ‘stop crying’ (1:26:06 - 1:26:15) speaks more to the audience than him. A subversion of a 4th wall break that allows the audience to share their trauma with Charlie and Charlie with the viewer. The creation of a shared emotional experience between Charlie and the audience consolidates itself as all the fragments of his memories and self come together in his head at the height of the score.
Mise en scene, specifically the placement of props and objects in the frame and costume are vehicles for storytelling that seldom receive adequate respect. In this scene, mise en scene contributes to the conveying of Charlie’s agony and loss of self. Patrick and Sam leaving propels a new found pain in Charlie to the surface of his mind, beguiling him into unwrapping his forgotten trauma. The photos in his house of him and his siblings as children cites a purity and naivety no longer present in Charlie after his sexual assault at the hands of Aunt Helen. A conviction compounded by his wardrobe. A grey suit, provided by Patrick, as a suit is what ‘all great writers wear’ (39:52), ages Charlie far beyond his 15 years. Charlie wearing the suit is a subconscious coping mechanism offering an escape from his past but one he cannot run from. His past catching up to his present. In the back of his room, a light is turned off, indicating his separation from existence and his will to leave rather than live, as a result of his discovery. Charlie continues his catharsis in front of his typewriter. The best present he has ever received, places the audience in a new perspective. Charlie writes letters to a friend and by the end of the film we are writing our letters to him. Pleading him to hold on.
As the scene draws to a close, the frame of Charlie’s head fills the scene into darkness, literally putting the audience into his mind as we are left looking back at ourselves in the reflection, left to write our letters to Charlie.
Steven Chbosky and Andrew Dunn have provided a perfect example of how to convey emotion in film and how to sire empathy within an audience. Through the use of mise en scene, costume, the sub arts within cinematography and sound, the film produces emotion within the viewer and allows for the true depth of the film’s themes to resonate in the audience.

Seasons of Fear Notes
- Paul Mcgann describing new years night in 1930s Singapore while drinking tea in a fancy hotel garden and reading newspapers to the light of the fireworks is AESTHETIC and I am HERE for it
-"Hmm!"
"HhmMMM!"
I love these two idiots
-"I assume you did your usual act of playing the fool and making him talk."
"Do I do that?"
"I...uh always assumed you did?"
"Oh :("
ASSFJFKDJDINE WILL CHARLIE EVER STOP ROASTING EIGHT?
"My death must have been extremely unsatisfying."
"Yes, do look on the bright side." I think she laughed while saying this haha
Pffft Charley's listing off ways to brutally murder him and eight just sighs "charleeyyy"
"You're just in time for the bloodbath"
"Story of my life!" EIGHT WHY ARE YOU LIKE THIS
-"And people disappear up those staircases" *launches into zagreus rhyme* zagreus is NOT giving me good vibes ohhhh boy
-"You learn to notice such details when you're use to the bitchiness of timelord society" ASGFJFJF IM WHEEZING
-CHARLEY GOT POISONED SHIT
-"now can we drop him into a volcano?" charley I love you so much
-"It's the most wonderful thing about Lady Time, how nothing's constant, how everything decays and changes." This entire monologue is giving me a lot of Doctor Who Feels(tm) because the whole nature of the show is change, and even though our young Eight sees it as a good thing now, time will take away everything dear to him and he won't call it beautiful anymore.
(Also scherzo feels because nothing changed in there. Always scherzo feels one way or another gah)
-"Grayell never changes, Not inside, not who he is. So time piles on top of him and kills everything good" aaand Big Finish did Ashildr/Lady Me before the show did too, huh.
-"Sorry I was soliloquizing, filthy habit" HSHDUDNI YOU CAN'T THROW A JOKE IN THERE RIGHT AFTER ALL THAT
-Pfft they got caught dragging grayell's body around and Eight is like "Umm...this doesn't look good, does it" ASGHDJDJ WHY ARE YOU LIKE THIS
-"Well cheer up, Look there's a mouse! :)"

-"The most beautiful woman in all of England...probably?" This story is definitely adding fuel to the Ace!doctor headcanon
-"I should have thumped you harder!" Charley Is so indignant haha
-ok Edith and Edward are cute in a "there-is-no-body-else-i-would-conquer-all-of-england-with" and "you-are-the-only-one-able-to-manipulate-people-as-well-as-me" kind of way
-also I love all the references to how wily and tricky Eight is, get me those eldritch trickster god vibes
-Eight being so worried about wanting to kill Grayell is ironic considering his last two incarnations lol, also crying in the club because of time war eight.
it's strange how he is desperately trying to attach himself to the idea of the doctor, a bit like his future incarnations after the war. But I guess the identity crisis would be valid considering how this incarnation started, and how often he loses his memory
-Ok, but Paul Mcgann in a fancy old english dress would look great. Cmon
-"Hey, Bats, great!" Eight is like a disney princess oh my god sibdjdnd
-"last time we tried that we ended up manacled to the wall" lol yeah eight dont you remember?? Jesus christ, without Charlie you'd get more fucked up then usual
-"My daughter Charlotte Pollard" EIGHT YALL LOOK THE SAME AGE YOU DUMBASS
-"I can make this stuff up all day, I've read a lot of Jane Austen" we stan Charlie's taste in books
-this is the most passive aggressive conversation I've seen ever seen in big finish
-"witH STYLE!" EIGHT WHY ARE YOU LIKE THIS
-of course Eight would get in a 19th century duel and almost stab himself right before
-Lowkey shipping Lucy and Charlie
-"If I hold this sword to your throat long enough the years will exact their rightful toll, do want to know how it feels like to be 1400 years old?" Eight being quietly terrifying is my JAM
-cue "whats that in your hand" "A knife!" "NO" vine
-EIGHT THATS NOT THE PROPER REACTION TO GETTING STABBED MULTIPLE TIMES
-he wouldn't dream of leaving her behind and I'm getting charlie and eight feels gahhhhh
-"I think you've gotten fatter as a species since I've last seen you" EIGHT SHUT UP
-"Everybody's calling me a coward today" he is so offended pffffft
-DID HE REALLY JUST THROW HIMSELF IN THE TIME VORTEX DOCTOR NO, WHY
-"The butterfly colors of the vortex" of course this makes you think of butterflies
-"i could feel them wanting to pull my psyche apart and sacrifice me on the alter of time" well that's horrifying and eloquent
-daw Charley talking about the doctor smelling like honey and stuff is cute
-Lucy is great and I love her
-baby grayell is surprisingly cute and wholesome
-"Are you quite finished talking to yourself" GSIDNDIE YOU CANT SAY JACKSHIT ABOUT THAT DOCTOR AND YOU KNOW IT
-"pray to whatever gods you have" "I do that every day" ??? Does he mean Lady Time and/or Death??? The universe itself???
-"Some of them as memories, some of them as stories, some of them as dreams" interesting within the context of all the timey wimey bullshit with the Year that Never Happened and a bunch of other timeline shit
-wait he was just talking about cow puns why is there a creepy deep voice shaming the doctor
-is it the timelords ??
-wait what what what WHAT
-Ok well I'm fucking terrified wHAT, CHARLIE ARE YOU OK?

Have you done any HCs for the Wammy boys with ND S/O? Particularly audio processing issues, sensory issues, obsessive controlling traits (I.e. Everything has to be organised right or it stresses them out), and a lack of understanding of social cues (requiring directness to understand). If not, can I request some?
Hello Dear Anon! Let me give it a try.
Wall o’ Text below.
L
L is a very direct individual. His SO almost always gets his social cues. Believe it or not, he’s very good with this.
His piles of paper and clutter when he’s working can really stress his SO out, but that is also something that helps him work better. (organized chaos is kind of his work environment) so they have to have rooms where it is organized how his partner feels comfortable and in control.
His eating habits can get to them, too. He’s working on being neater and quieter about it.
They both have things that make them comfortable, but they manage to strike a balance where they can both be ok together.
Near
Near is direct, but if they need more help with social cues, he isn’t sure how to help them. He isn’t super great with them himself.
Near’s toys and games can make them feel off center, so together they had to devise a way of organizing his stuff that made his SO feel good in and in control of their environment.
Together they play a  lot of memory and riddle games. These help his love focus in a different way and helps their audio processing issues.
Mello
Mello wants everything neat and in its place. His organization makes his place feel like a safe place for his SO. He’s likes to be in control, but also wants his SO to be happy, so he is more than willing to let them organize things how they need. As long as there is some order, he’s happy.
Mello will often leave notes for his love. He knows that they can have difficulty with hearing words and his letters supplement their interactions, especially if they are going to need directions or need to remember to do something.
He is very patient with helping them understand social cues. His SO’s well-being is all that matters to him.
His SO knows that his place is a safe place for them. They always feel at home there.
Matt
Matt keeps things kind of a mess. It just doesn’t bother him. As long as he knows where stuff is, it’s organized to him. However, he is more than willing to let his SO have things the way they need it.
He’s so chill, he has a hard time realizing he needs to be more direct with them.
When he stays at their place, he’s on his best behavior to keep their home the way they like it. He can sometimes be a mess magnet.
When he plays video games, he wears headphones. He doesn’t want the sounds (which can be obnoxious to anyone not playing, yet alone someone with auditory processing issues) to be a bother to them since they have a hard time tuning out noises or understanding sounds. This can get very tiresome for them, so he wants to eliminate anything that can cause them frustration.
He knows he isn’t the best at helping them, but he loves them and tries.
Beyond
Despite his style as a murderer, his home is meticulously organized. His SO feels pretty settled there. They may not love everything the way he has it, but it could be a lot worse. As long as everything is in its place, they can manage.
B’s pretty spot on with social cues (remember, “Beyond” is an act he puts on for Naomi, reading her and trying to put her off kilter) and he loves to “translate” them when his love needs a more direct approach. It makes him feel like their hero while he gets to show the other person that they didn’t do a good enough job communicating.
They do crossword puzzles together. They both enjoy it and it’s a way to use other strengths other than things that rely on auditory input.
I hope this is what you wanted. I did my best. Big thanks to Jake and Katrin for your help with this. Love you guys. 🖤

DRUCK reactions - s4 ep1
Ages ago I said I wanted to write meta about Cris’ and Matteo’s seasons, so of course, when I finally sit down to write reactions to a Skam remake, it’s about Amira instead.
A few weeks back I was composing tumblr posts in bed before falling asleep (my number 1 hobby lol) when it struck me that the writing for Amira’s season was really… indefensibly bad. So let’s stroll down through memory lane and revisit Druck s4, or how to throw away your potential because you have to put out this season before summer is over!
CLIP 1: Dark clouds over Winterberg
Obviously I’m writing these with the benefit of hindsight, but I will try and incorporate what my initial reaction to a clip was whenever I can remember.
Sometime between the Abiball episode and episode 32, I argued (on twitter) that the Abiball special was the Abiball episode instead, the first episode of Amira’s season. It would thus introduce us to the conflicts and characters that would take place during Amira’s season. I thought that in addition to the obvious Amira/Mohammed, Carlos/Kiki/Essam would be important, Kiki’s family life would be important, Stefan would be important, and David/Matteo would probably not be important as they seemed to be doing just fine in their scenes.
I didn’t think Mia/Alex would be important because I didn’t actually watch their clip lol. The Winterberg stans on my twitter orbit thought the clip was cute and nothing to worry about. That should’ve been my first clue that the (twitter) stan habit of repeating the “we never lose” mantra doesn’t make for great viewing comprehension, because watching the clip, it’s so obvious that shit is gonna go down lol.
Mia moves from one of the flat share’s bathrooms to the other because they never really recreated Mia’s room in the s3 flat share.
I still haven’t watched Mia’s episode, so I don’t know how all this stuff is going to get resolved, but it seems like Mia doesn’t think they can handle a LDR, and Alex is picking up on those vibes hard. I guess I don’t really get why Mia is so pessimistic about it because at that age I kinda thought a few months break weren’t really an obstacle. (Not sure if it would help me to watch Mia’s season, because this seems like a wholly new conflict.)
Anyway, Alex acts sweet/reassuring (I really like how soft spoken everyone is in this episode), so Mia puts it out of her mind for now. But Idk, they haven’t really spoken about the elephant in the room.
CLIP 2: Don’t call them the chastest evak ever again
Tbh this clip comes across as a direct rebuttal to all the s3 commentary about David and Matteo seeming like they’re not into each other, or like they aren’t ~passionate~ like the other evaks.
It’s like, “these gremlins are horny on main, now shut up.”
But I like that they’re fully dressed, like yes, you can show physical intimacy without undressing your teen actors (shade fully intended).
I love Lukas von Horbatschewsky’s hair and I’m very jealous of Matteo in this sequence, lmao.
Luis Sepúlveda died of coronavirus this year, in Spain. You’re welcome for that bit of 2020 misery dripping onto this cute clip.
I do think David feels guilty that he may have caused Matteo to fail his Spanish exam because of David’s own issues, which I think is very on brand for David. Obviously it wasn’t his fault.
I really like how soft spoken everyone is in this episode, 2X.
And this has been said a million times by now, but David and Matteo are the one evak version where they’re the same age (Joana is in the same year as Cris, but is a year older, so she must’ve gotten held back at some point). So it’s funny, and possibly a reference to Isak and Even, to see David talking about what it’d be like if they had that age difference. Like, maybe David would be more like Even in behavior! And, going by Matteo’s reaction, he wouldn’t be into that.
This clip really feels like the ending to Matteo and David. They’ll go on a road trip, they’ll work on David’s movie, they’ll be around, but this clip is their conclusion. They both feel secure and content in their relationship, and ready for everything that’s to come.
Like I said on the post about Cris and Joana, I like that David and Matteo don’t have further issues. And while I have tons of issues with Druck s4, which I will be talking about forever in the following posts, I never had an issue with how they deployed Matteo or David. (Okay, self. Now say that again without crying about David’s season that should have been.)
Fucking David cutting their make out short only to then say such a highkey flirty, romantic thing to Matteo though. No wonder Matteo’s like, “STOP, I’M SUPPOSED TO STUDY.”
CLIP 3: A challenger appears!
I like the fanon that David is a healthy eater (or at least in comparison to Matteo), because all we ever see David eat of his own volition (i.e. not food that was made for him) is candy.
God, I love Kiki snatching David’s fruity gummies out of his hands. It makes me laugh every time, particularly how she demands to know if the candy is vegan.
Hanna looks beautiful. ;_;
There’s a split second when Jonas is about to give Hanna that box where David looks alarmed in the background. In my mind he’s all, “Bro, no. Not a public proposal. Reel it back in, bro!”
And then, to the surprise of Jonas and all the viewers, we find out that not only are Jonas and Hanna not together, but Hanna is dating German Arthur. Again, in “fandom refuses to acknowledge storyline conflict until it’s staring right at them” news, Stefan had actually been introduced via an audio to Hanna the day before, but people were convinced it was Hanna’s dad. Whose actor they called just to record an audio. Clearly.
My belief at this point was that Stefan would be relevant to Amira’s storyline, but instead it was just a way to give Hanna her own episode. 🤡
Matteo’s transformation into Michi is complete by donning his grandpa hat.
He also makes to trip David for no real reason. Throwback to Unter Wasser.
Matteo saying Inshallalalah in a sing song voice is cute, but so annoying.
Matteo Florenzi: He’s a pain in the ass, but we love him.
CLIP 4: I guess Abdi and Axel picked up his grades at another point
I love the way Matteo grabs David’s head to pull him along. They’re so cute and I’m gonna enjoy every second.
Jonas also grabs Hanna along, because fans needed to be further confused as to what was happening with Hanna and Stefan and Jonas.
Thank you, Druck, for telling me Kiki’s and Amira’s grades, but as you can understand, that’s nowhere near enough to satisfy my curiosity and I will be needing to know everyone’s GPA because that is the kind of thing that’s important to me. What about it!!!
I think, going by how impressed Mia is, that Mia’s grade isn’t as good as Amira’s. Which I think is a neat detail, since the Nooras are kind of supposed to be the perfect girls. I like that Amira is even better than Mia at school.
I thought the concept of Carlos failing his final exam and maybe realizing school wasn’t his thing would’ve been an interesting storyline to explore, but I’m not mad that it didn’t happen. Hopefully Druck will touch on it with the next kids.
And we’re now treated to three reveals about Kiki. Kiki has a sister (now she has two), she likes the idea of moving out and living with Carlos, and her mom isn’t doing well.
The remakes trying to develop their Vildes past s4 make sense to me. By the end of Skam, Vilde clearly was the character who’d been the most robbed of a season, there were several potential storylines to do with her. Financial instability, alcoholic mom, eating disorders, plus it seemed obvious that any season taking place during the girls’ russetide should go to her. And that’s without getting into Vilde’s strong denial that she was a lesbian.
So the remakes are sitting on all these potential storylines, but as we now know, they can’t make their own Vilde season.
And from a European TV exec’s point of view, Vilde (who in every version is a white, skinny, ostensibly straight girl) is a very safe main after the gay and Muslim seasons.
Cue the LITTLE SISTER.
I get why people are fed up with the Vildes’ prominence in the remakes that are in their latter stages, but at the same time we got 8 versions of Noora’s season, most of which are a limpdicked enemies to lovers story with a misguided sexual assault storyline tacked at the end. (And I say misguided because after a strong start, it’s mostly about what William will think, how William will react, I can’t tell William about this, etc.) So in my case, I’ve had quite enough Noora to last me a lifetime, but my Vilde thirst has only begun to be quenched.
Tangent over, Kiki lies that she’s not going to the lake because she’s going to check on Carlos. Bad form, Kiki.
CLIP 5: Graduation (Friends Forever).mp3
In clown news, I predicted there’d be a clip between the Kiki stuff and the actual dance (maybe a Sam clip), as it seemed to me there wasn’t much of a connection between Kiki looking sad on that ping pong table and PARTY TIME. Lol at me.
And speaking of clowning, while I thought the Abiball episode was part of s4, I also thought that was fine because it was just doing the multi POV episode in the beginning of the season rather than at the end, right? Wrong.
As much as it would’ve been great if Sam and Abdi had storylines pertaining to racism and islamophobia (whether Abdi is or isn’t a Muslim, people would probably assume he is), I also have to admit… This conversation is hilarious.
“I want to have intercourse with you.” [glass breaks in the background]
Abdi closing his speech with a wide smile gvvhvh.
The first hundred times I watched this scene, I thought Alex seemed a bit alarmed at the conversation taking place, but really… We’re back to stone-faced Alex lol.
Don’t kill me, but I feel a little bad for Abdi in this moment. He really put himself out there and Sam just leaves without giving him an answer, yikes. I actually got tired of Abdi’s sad sackiness during the season, but right now I feel for him. L
There’s this smile Jonas sometimes directs at dudes (like Alex here) that makes me think… Bi. He also directs it at Matteo in s3.
Ugh.
There’s a parallel universe where Stefan was the villain of Amira’s season, and it would’ve been a much more interesting season than the one we got.
Because Stefan is a bit of a Darth Jonas. He works for Greenpeace, but, at least in this scene, seems a bit full of himself, and like… twisting the knife in a way that feels like it has to be intentional. And it would’ve been so interesting if Druck had tackled the white dudes who seem like they’re not going to be assholes about Muslims, but then turn around and say some shocking garbage. I’m sure we’ve all met a guy like that before.
In my mind, Stefan would’ve driven a wedge between Hanna and Amira, which would’ve been way more compelling than what we got, but on the other hand, it probably would’ve made fandom people hate Hanna, and people outside of fandom hate Amira.
Anyway, tag teaming gays! I love how David and Matteo share a look and immediately take care of both Jonas and Stefan.
I also love it when David looks murderous. It looks good on him.
But I feel like this didn’t go anywhere? Like, Matteo always hated Stefan and continued hating Stefan until the finale. In this scene, David seems to dislike Stefan just as much, but it’s not a thread they bother following. It’s too bad because I think Matteo and David together sabotaging Stefan is a lot funnier than just Matteo doing it.
I love how soft spoken Amira is when telling Essam not to show up at her graduation party. I would’ve been a lot less polite lmao.
You know, I actually thought Kiki was genuine here when she said she wasn’t a fan of competitions. Obviously that’s not the Kiki we’ve known until this point, but like, I thought it was meant to show character development on her part, But we’ll talk about THAT more in the following episodes.
Matteo fully blames their win on David being so hot, mysterious and new, and it’s hilarious because that’s also what initially drew him to David. Like, “fuck you for being so hot!”
I thought it was such a nice detail that they brought back the girl from the refugee classes in s1. We’re saying goodbye to all these school people who are going on their own post high school journeys without us!
In my mind, Abdi and Alex are talking about something completely serious, like, I don’t know, Abdi’s dad wanting him to study business and Alex advising Abdi on the best business schools in Berlin or something.
I feel like Hanna is the one girl in the squad who really doesn’t feel ready for post high school life and I HATE the writers so much for how they wrapped her character up, but we’ll save that for later.
I could watch Matteo passing the tiara (=the main) to Amira forever. The way he tips his hat and looks like even he’s a little surprised that he (a character like him!) was ever the lead on a teen show, David’s voice asking Matteo if he’s coming, Matteo leaving with David to live happily ever after, the initial notes of Just Got Paid as Amira looks at nighttime Berlin. This meme is overdone by now, but THE POETIC CINEMA.
Jonas glaring at romantic rivals at end of year dances is iconic at this point.
Amira being tagteamed by an annoying little brother AND a well-meaning, embarrasing older brother. Choose your own nightmare.
I really love the set up for the Essam/Kiki/Carlos conflict. The emotional potential is SO good because on one hand you have Kiki, who wants to have a good time for once instead of parenting her own parent, then Carlos whose self-esteem is on the floor after having failed his final exam, and Essam, whose own sense of self-worth hinges upon whether white German girls find him attractive. Like, obviously Essam is never going to come between Kiki and Carlos who have been through some shit together, but with Carlos out of commission and Essam eager to please, you can see how the situation could so easily turn into a mess.
Amira and Mohammed have the most sexual tension out of any Yousana pair, period. They literally just said hi to each other and I already feel like I’m intruding gvhvhv.
Social media
David saying of Matteo: “Er bekommt Auslauf.” (Something like, “he gets walkies” because he’s been good with revising) is the cutest shit ever.
Remember when Stefan sent Jonas a whole ass message and signed it “with sunny greetings”? Stefan was much more fun when we were supposed to find him unbearable.
Kiki creating a new Whatsapp group for every single thing is so true to life.
I’d forgotten that Amira also hated Stefan almost right away. The season that could’ve been, I tell you.
All the Abi Chaker Clan content reminds me of how I thought Jonas looked like, well, such a child, compared to Stefan, and I thought that was intentional. Like, here is Stefan with a Greenpeace job whereas Jonas doesn’t know what to do with his life, and he’s like, spray-painting abi chaker clan onto walls and posting pics to the abi chaker clan account. It’s not that I thought Jonas should’ve acted like a whole ass adult, of course he’s having fun with his high school friends, but I thought Jonas might feel inadequate in comparison to where Stefan is at this point of his life.
I can’t remember who revealed it, but Sara was supposed to end up with Toilet Sam and that was supposed to come out during the s3 finale (on that week, Sara posted a story with a guy whose face was obscured iirc). Since that was part of the clip where Hanna and Jonas also got back together, which they cut to make way for Hanna/Jonas/Stefan drama, Sara takes some other dude to the Abiball. And I think we’re supposed to think that’s the same dude she went on that date with.

university note-taking 101 ~
one of the hardest things parts of adapting to life in university is finding a note-taking method that is efficient and easy for you and your learning style.
it took me 18 months at university, experimenting with different note-taking styles, to settle on a few that work best for me. i thought i’d share all of the different methods i tried and the pros/cons of each & hopefully it’ll help you land on some note-taking styles quicker than i did! :-))
SO...i’ll start by saying obviously not all note-taking techniques are going to be included in this post because i’m just one person and these are just the styles i’ve had personal experience with and not everyone will like or dislike the same methods, it will take a little bit of trial and error to find your perfect style :-))
i’m going to split the different methods into 3 separate sections (and i’ll highlight my personal favourites):
    ⇢ handwritten
    ⇢ ipad/tablet
    ⇢ macbok/laptop
Tumblr media
starting with what we all know and (kind of) love! we’ve spent the majority of our school education making handwritten notes for high school so it makes sense to start here.
1. basic handwritten notes
this type of note-taking is the most basic of all basic note-taking techniques and it’s probably what you’re used to. it involves any kind of paper - lined, squared, plained, whatever you fancy - and a single pen or pencil.
all this involves is writing down everything important you think is being said or discussed by your lecturer or your classmates! there’s nothing fancy involved, it’s all about getting down the most important points.
pros:
- you’ve already been doing this for years
- no time wasted doodling or highlighting
cons:
- can be time consuming if you’re not a quick writer
- if you’re writing on loose paper, it’s super easy to lose
- not easy to work out what notes relate to what slides / what comments were being made
- you may end up trying to write down everything on the lecture slides - waste of time when you can view them at home and you might miss important adlib!
2. annotating print-outs (*fave*)
this is a technique i adopted in second year of university! all you have to do is print out your lecture slides beforehand and bring them along with you. you can write at the side of slides or right on top of them.
pros:
- less likely to repeat what is said on slides so you can spend time listening for the nuggets of gold from your lecturer
- having slides prepared before a lecture means you can read them and familiarise yourself with some content
- easy to know what notes relate to what specific slides
- super quick to make important and accurate notes!
cons:
- it can be expensive to buy a printer/ink or to use your university’s printing facilities
- again, you can easily lose loose paper if you’re not careful
- your lecture slides may not always be available beforehand
3. cornell note-taking
cornell note-taking is something you’re probably already aware for those who don’t know - it’s a note-taking system devised in the 40s by a cornell professor.
cornell notes have to look a particular way in order for them to work (see here) and they’re geared towards helping you pass your exams.
you do your main note-taking in the right-hand box - these notes should be brief but include enough detail to act as a revision source. take these note in lectures or in classes and make sure to note down and highlight anything your lecturer emphasises.
use your left-hand column to write down potential exam questions you could be asked regarding the notes you’ve written on the right. these questions should act as test questions when you’re revising!
finally, in the bottom box you should summarise the key points to take away from that page of notes.
pros:
- excellent note-taking method for exam revision
- can be super efficient once you’re used to the style
cons:
- can take a while to set up pages if you’re doing it by hand
- can take some time adapting to this new way of note-taking
- not a flexible note-taking system, no person wiggle room
handwritten notes general pros and cons:
- hand writing notes is the most reliable way to remember important information
- you can use personal abbreviations and symbols to make your note-taking quicker
- you might lose papers here and there meaning your notes are incomplete or totally make no sense anymore
- it can be time-consuming trying to decide what is the vital information and getting it down before the topic of discussion changes
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1. goodnotes for set reading annotations (app link here) (*fave*)
goodnotes is an app designed specifically for taking efficient and nice-to-look-at-notes! i personally use it for note-taking and annotating set readings at university.
i create a checklist on the first page of each module’s notebooks and write down each research paper or journal article i have to read so i don’t lose track. i then important PDFs straight into the notebook and annotate and highlight over the top of them.
pros:
- it’s super easy to have all of your reading notes and annotations in one place
- no risk of losing papers as everything is stored electronically
- the app uses icloud to sync your notes across all your devices make everything super accessible
- you can quickly share your notes with anybody through email/airdrop/imessage/pretty much anything!
cons:
- you do have to pay for the app (but it’s cheaper than printing out all of your readings)
- can be difficult to navigate at first
2. onenote for in-lecture notes
onenote is a microsoft app that lets you type and draw in one place! it works in a similar way to goodnotes.
i used onenote in first year to take in-lecture notes because it also allows for audio recording (DISCLAIMER: DO NOT RECORD YOUR LECTURES WITHOUT WRITTEN PERMISSION FROM YOUR UNIVERSITY AND LECTURERS) and it was super handy to have my notes and audio stored in the same file.
pros:
- super versatile and allows for many note-taking method in one app
- syncs across your devices (if you have onenote downloaded)
- allows you to collate different methods of note-taking in one place
cons:
- can be hard to organise your information! pages are blank and there’s no end to them, there’s also no grid for your items to snap to so it gets messy very quickly
- i’ve experienced personal issues with the syncing feature
ipad tablet/notes general pros and cons:
- tablets are generally really lightweight and easy to carry around - making them preferable over heavy notebooks or laptops
- having access to the internet makes note-taking super easy when you need to search terms or find photos
- you do have to make sure your tablet is fully charged if you’re taking it onto campus
- tablets can be super expensive
Tumblr media Tumblr media
now for my holy grail - taking notes on a macbook or (insert laptop of choice here)!
1. brief in-lecture notes (*fave*)
i use microsoft word or pages to take most of my in-lecture notes and i fleet between using my ipad and macbook - i’m sticking it in this section because 9/10 i’m using my macbook.
with these kind of notes i set myself a specific structure and carry that out through the whole module!
first i lay my title across the top of my document - i usually just use the title of the lecture / general lecture topic. I then use my first indentations for the titles of each individual slide and bullet points for important comments made about each slide i also note particularly interesting things written on the slides themselves!
i stick to one font and one size to avoid wasting time on formatting!
i usually print out these notes so i can annotate them with any research i’ve found so it helps with my finalised notes.
pros:
- super quick if you’re a fast typer
- easy to correct notes or go back and add more detail at a later date
- easy to share and sync between devices
- simple format makes it easy to follow and a good revision resource
cons:
- notes can look a little boring and uninviting
- not easy to use abbreviations or symbols because of autocorrect!
2. extensive revision notes (*fave*)
i also use my macbook to create my finalised notes that i use to write my essays and revise for exams.
these notes take more time to make because of the formatting but they’re super nice to look at and make a wonderful resource at the end.
for these notes i start by picking a colour scheme (usually one within microsoft word) and i stick with this colour scheme for a whole module. i allocate one colour to research names and dates, one colour to titles, one colour to highlight key information with. i also use a variety of fonts! i typically use 4 fonts: one for the title of the lecture, one for subheadings, one for researcher names and dates and one for the main body of text - the main body font is usually a standard Helvetica or Arial!
i really take time to flesh out these notes so they reflect all of my learning - lectures, seminars, set reading, extra reading and knowledge i already had! i print off the notes and stick them in a ring binder and this becomes my bible for the semester!
pros:
- really inviting to look at so it makes revision a bit more enjoyable
- gives you time to show off your knowledge and create an extensive revision resource
- easy to share with friends or lecturers to get feedback
cons:
- can take a while to make these notes
- if you’re printing, this can cost quite a bit!
3. mind-map notes
finally! mind-map notes.
i use SimpleMind Lite to create mind-maps as the last part of my learning. each lecture gets its own mind-map and the nodes represent the key themes within the lecture!
it’s super important you don’t just use slide titles for your nodes as your mind-map will get crowded easily and you won’t want to use it as a revision resource.
keep your branching-off nodes short and sweet - think of them as knowledge cues! by the end of your learning you should be able to look at a node and remember the information regarding that point. these cues are also easier to remember and jog your memory in exam settings.
pros:
- good to see information presented in a new way
- you can use bright colours to make it more exciting
- great way to prep for exams
cons:
- hard to print also your canvas within the app is endless
- can be hard to share with others
macbook/laptop notes general pros and cons:
- can help you create a wide variety of notes - from short and sweet to fleshed out and fuuuuull of all the detail in the world
- allows you to correct, add to and print off your notes however many times you’d like
- you do have to make sure your laptop is always charged / you always have a charger!
- laptops can be heavy and impractical to carry to university
- if you’re not saving to a cloud you could lose some of your work (don’t be silly like me, use an external hard drive or dropbox!!!)
Tumblr media
you made it!!! congrats :-))
hopefully i’ve given you a good idea of some of the note-taking methods you could use in university and you fancy trying a couple out!
if you have any questions or note-taking tips yourself, leave a message in the replies below.

Thoughts : Gone Girl (2014)
Tumblr media
I recently hit 500 posts, an achievement I’m very proud of, but it also coincided with a job transition, leading to an unfortunately-timed absence of content.  As the transition settled and life begin to reshape itself, I found myself in the doldrums of first quarter releases, some of which did pique my interest, but many of which felt as if they could wait in terms of viewing.  With that thought in mind, I dug back into the archives for films that I’ve owned but not viewed, and one contender jumped straight to the top : Gone Girl.
Amy Elliot Dunne (Rosamund Pike) is declared missing on her fifth wedding anniversary after her husband Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) returns home from The Bar, a local bar he runs with his twin sister Margo (Carrie Coon), to find damage consistent with a kidnapping.  Amy’s parents, Marybeth (Lisa Banes) and Rand Elliot (David Clennon), relocate to Missouri from New York to spearhead the missing person campaign, largely due to the family fame connected to the Amazing Amy series of books that the Elliot parents authored, with Amy’s real-life shortcomings serving as the basis for the titular character’s stories.  Detective Rhonda Boney (Kim Dickens), the lead investigator on the case, works hard to be impartial, especially in light of her partner Officer James Gilpin‘s (Patrick Fugit) dislike of Nick.  As the days roll by, public sentiment begins to sway against Nick and heavily in favor of the beloved Amy, but her famous habit of leaving anniversary ‘clues’ leads Nick to a series of awakenings that forces him, and in turn Amy, to reevaluate everything they thought they understood about their marriage.
David Fincher has always had a penchant for psychological thrillers, but with Gone GIrl, we are given a damning examination of marriage.  From Nick’s side, we are shown a man that shoots upward, hitches his wagon to a star and immediately considers his work as a lover and husband done.  To him, the chase and the catch were key, and once Amy was ‘his’, any need to inquire about her feelings, her history or her needs took a backseat to his own.  The use of a family tragedy offered Nick the chance to emotionally manipulate Amy into leaving her comfort zone and nose-diving into his, only for her to become an accessory to him.  This fact, however, does not absolve Amy of her dangerous history and pattern of emotional manipulation, which is heavily based on the entitlement that comes with her fame.  While it is tragic that her life centered around objectification from her parents and lovers, the sheer depths that she goes to teach Nick a ‘lesson’ not only come off as extreme, but they put Amy in several dangerous moments.
The twisted chess of manipulation that Fincher presents plays upon familiar film elements, but the extremely natural presentation of the events to both the viewer and the characters in the world of the film makes the examination of Amy’s desperate acts shocking.  It could be argued that her character is an updated take on the Black Widow mythos, but the waters are muddied by the aforementioned history of Amy’s lack of autonomy.  Despite her being the star of every connection she takes part in, time and again she finds herself as the pawn of someone else’s will.  Much like a cornered animal lashes out with surprising amounts of aggression and a disregard for its opponent’s well-being, the trail of destruction that Amy leaves in her wake is extreme and shocking, which makes her natural demeanor ring with a sinister tone.
David Fincher films have always had a distinct, dark look to them, like a version of dramatic neo-noir, and this look works to great impact in Gone Girl, hanging an implied tone right from the beginning of the film that the narrative slowly unveils.  The pacing of said narrative, as well as the mix of current-day moments and memories that may not be what they seem upon first glance, flows about as close to a book as film can, making this an extremely successful adaptation.  Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross bring their distinct, moody and dark scoring to the table, but manage to use so much restraint and choice of key placements to shine that they become a shadow character, paralleling Fincher’s visual cues with audio ones.
Ben Affleck naturally tows the line between obnoxiously charming and oddly dislikeable, and those qualities are honed in on directly for his role as Nick, with him serving as one of the most complex protagonists committed to film in recent memory in turns of audience trust and compassion.  In turn, Rosamund Pike manages to force a sinister charm onto her performance, managing to make viewers consider her side despite a clear and present path of destruction.  Carrie Coon helps referee the absurdity, helping to guide the viewer emotionally, though not necessarily on a one-to-one path paralleling the viewer experience, and her pairing with Patrick Fugit helps sell her as the heavy cop in terms of attitude.  Tyler Perry, who admittedly is not one of my favorite members of the film world, comes close to stealing the show with his bold, brash, candid and brutally honest performance.  Neil Patrick Harris helps anchor down the edginess for the final third of the the film, with his pairing against Pike providing some truly captivating cinema.  Appearances by Scoot McNairy, Missi Pyle, Emily Ratajkowski, Lisa Banes, David Clennons and a handful of others keep the high drama alive throughout.
In what will probably be a quote I’m remembered for long after I’m gone, I don’t know why it took me so long to get around to this film.  I’ve been a long-time fan of Fincher’s work, and Gone Girl is arguably some of his best.  He may have bigger, more well-known and flashier work, but the human element truly shines in this film, and upon its conclusion, we are not only left with a number of questions about the film, but a few about ourselves and the way we connect with others.

Movies and Plays as Audiovisual, Temporal Storytelling
Movies and plays are worth your while, and are a unique form of storytelling (Yes, that is almost exactly how I opened my last post; this is a series, after all!). Now, theoretically, I should talk about these two mediums separately, as they have some major differences. I could even do another post about TV shows as a sequential form of movies, but I think "serial storytelling" will have to be a topic for the far future. I believe, however, that these two mediums have much more in common than they have different.
Movies and plays—including musicals and TV shows as well—use semi-verbal, visual, temporal, and auditory storytelling.
Lights, Camera Angles, Action!
You'll recall that books are totally verbal, relying entirely on language to tell their stories. Movies and plays are semi-verbal. Most of them include dialogue, and some even have narration in the form of voice-over or a chorus. Though dialogue—often of the snappy variety—is an important part of many movies and plays, it is not a necessity. Silent short films can still tell stories, as can theatrical forms like ballet.
Movies and plays can get away with going light on dialogue because they rely heavily on visuals for their props, setting, costumes, and character actions. Just as an author chooses which words to use to convey a particular scene or feeling, moviemakers, playwrights, and directors—from henceforth grouped under the term "creators"—choose what objects will and won't be on stage or in frame. They can make the effects and set pieces realistic or stylized, and can choose to use colors, shapes, lighting, and other visual cues to convey messages to the audience without stating them verbally.
Blocking is a particular visual aspect of movies that books can't convey. Wether an actor is standing up or down-stage, in or out of focus, facing the audience or not can all be important parts of the story. Movies can also use reaction shots—that is, showing us a character's facial expression rather than what they are seeing—to build tension or evoke emotion. Technically, books can do something similar to this, by saying or showing how a character is feeling before telling/showing us what they're reacting to, but it's a bit different, largely because movie creators can hold on a shot for some time without needing to add new information in the form of words or description.
And this brings us to the next point: temporal storytelling. Plays and movies take a certain time to tell their story, whereas books take a specific number of words to tell theirs. These both pace the stories, but in different ways. A book might take a paragraph to tell all the important details of a room, while a movie can do this in a single shot. Creators can still choose to linger on objects, characters’ movements, and so forth in order to slow a scene down and give the audience time to process what's happening or, conversely, to build a sense of unease.  While books, movies, and plays—all stories, really—are told in time (though not necessarily chronologically, as flashbacks and side stories exist), movies and plays can use time itself as a part of their storytelling process.
Music Speaks Louder Than Words
Finally, there is the audio aspect of movies and plays. Along with spoken dialogue, these mediums incorporate sound effects and music. Even silent films used music to evoke a mood for different scenarios, and many non-verbal cartoons utilize Mickey Mousing, or having the music match the movements of the characters—to play up the comedy of their stories. Foley artists, those behind-the-scenes folk who create sound effects for movies, are an important part of making movies seem real, or more-than-real, depending on the genre. Much like choosing what props to have on stage, creators choose what sounds should be included and what should be left out or muted.
Music (or the deliberate lack thereof, in some scenes) is my favorite part of movies, and is a big part of what makes them unique from books and comics. Obviously, music can set a tone, but in clever hands, it can do so much more. Characters or scenarios might be given a special theme, so that, even before they appear on screen, the audience knows to expect them. Themes can be used in call-backs, as when a certain song is played early in a movie and then brought back towards the ending. I especially love when the theme is changed in some way throughout the story.
The finest example of this, I think, are the songs in Les Miserables, particularly those of Javert and Valjean. "Valjean's Soliloquy", at the start of the play, and "Javert's Suicide", at the end, are the same tune and have similar lyrics, and are both a reaction to the character receiving an act of mercy. Both discuss how the character can no longer face the world as they once have. Valjean, however, uses this opportunity to turn his life around and become a better person; Javert rejects this mercy and throws his life away, refusing to live in a reality that doesn't fit with what he thought he knew. It's marvelous!
Promised Neverland does something interesting by taking a non-diegetic song (ie, mood music that is a part of the soundtrack) and showing us that it has diegetic origins (a character in the show wrote it, and other characters hum it). Once we realize where it came from, in the final episode of the show, it forces us to rethink why it's being used as the main theme of escape and hope, while other characters hum it during sorrowful circumstances. It evokes something beyond words that can't be described, but felt.
Even non-musical plays can use music like this. In Steel Magnolias, various songs play from a radio throughout the show, creating a mood but otherwise unimportant. It's also mentioned, off-handedly, that one of the characters likes the Hawaii 5-0 theme. In the final scene, where it's revealed that that character has died, there is no more music playing. The group of characters eventually come to terms with her death, realizing that life goes on but that they still want to keep her memory alive, and as the final moment of the play draws near, one of the characters hits the radio, and it comes back to life, playing the Hawaii 5-0 theme. As an audience member, I totally lost it at that point. I didn't even like that play that much, but when that song started playing, I burst out crying. Music is a powerful thing.
Humans and Emotions
You've probably noticed that I keep using the words "feel", "evoke", and other emotional phrases. Perhaps this is one reason why bookworms look down on movies, seeing them as long on feelings and short on substance. I think they are, in fact, long on both, but use their ability to elicit emotion—through visuals, timing, and audio cues—to underline their message and story. Just as books are the descendants of ancient songs and poems, movies and plays harken back to ancient forms of theater. The Greeks used tragedies specifically to give the audience a sense of catharsis as a way of dealing with and understanding emotion. Other theatrical forms—puppetry, kabuki and noh, ballet, and even rituals involving costumes and masks—are stylized in order to remove everything but the elemental aspects of the story they are telling. They are basic, but in a way that cuts to the heart of what it means to be human. Humans are verbal creatures, but we are also emotional in a way different from any other animal. We have archetypes, and symbols, and psychology, some of which can't quite be described in words and require us to see and hear and feel. And that is why movies and plays are unique and worthwhile.
And those, dear readers—and cinephiles, theater kids, and film buffs—are my thoughts on movies and plays.

Blu-ray Review: Wacko
Tumblr media
Scary Movie may be the most well-known slasher parody, but it was far from the first. The spoofs began shortly after the one-two punch of Halloween and Friday the 13th kicked off the subgenre's golden age. Between 1981 and 1982, slashers were skewered in no fewer than five films: Student Bodies, Saturday the 14th, Class Reunion, Pandemonium, and Wacko.
The latter, released in 1982, is the perhaps most obscure of the bunch, but it comes from cult director Greydon Clark (Without Warning, Uninvited), and the script is penned by four writers who would go on to find success in the industry: Jim Kouf (National Treasure), David Greenwalt (Angel), Dana Olsen (The ‘Burbs), and actor Michael Spound (Hotel). While not as successful as their later work, Wacko does open with the killer, after carving his mask out of a jack-o'-lantern, uttering his mantra: "Death to all teenagers who fuck!"
Tumblr media
The film centers around Mary (Julia Duffy, Newhart), who, as a child, watched her older sister (Claudia Lonow, Knots Landing) get chopped up by a killer with a gas-powered lawnmower on Halloween night. 13 years earlier, Mary is a senior at Hitchcock High preparing to attend the annual Halloween Pumpkin Prom and lose her virginity - which brings up not only traumatic memories but also the killer's return. The only other person who believes that a murderer is on the loose is the aptly named Detective Dick Harbinger (Joe Don Baker, Fletch), who serves as the Loomis of the story.
Clark often added cache to his B-movies by casting notable actors of yesteryear, but Wacko features one of his best casts. It includes George Kennedy (Cool Hand Luke) as Mary's perverted doctor father and Stella Stevens (The Poseidon Adventure) as his doting wife, Andrew Dice Clay (A Star Is Born) making his acting debut as the cocky, Fonzie-esque cool kid, Elizabeth Daily (Pee-wee's Big Adventure) as a fellow student, Anthony James (Unforgiven) as the school gardener, and Charles Napier (Rambo: First Blood Part II) as the chief of police.
Tumblr media
Despite being a slasher spoof with a plentiful cast of potential victims, Wacko’s body count is low. The script doesn’t poke fun at the subgenre so much as it merely uses slasher cliches to set up unrelated comedic beats. At times, it feels more like a parody of teen sex comedies and police procedural tropes. Nearly four decades later, much of Wacko's absurd humor is dated - not to mention grossly politically incorrect - but one can imagine it being quite funny in its time. Some of the laughs still hold up, particularly the Airplane-esque wordplay and sight gags. Clark also isn't afraid to break the fourth wall.
The score, composed by Arthur Kempel (Double Impact, Graduation Day), largely adopts a horror resonance yet has a playful, quirky undertone. The most-used cue in the film, however, is Charles Gounod's "Funeral March of a Marionette," best remembered as the theme from Alfred Hitchcock Presents. It's one of several recognizable genre elements referenced in the film, along with the likes of The Exorcist, The Omen, Psycho, Dr. Strangelove, The Elephant Man, Alien, and The Island of Dr. Moreau.
Tumblr media
Wacko has been newly restored in 4K from the 35mm original camera negative for a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack from Vinegar Syndrome. It features reversible cover art, and Vinegar Syndrome’s online shop offers an exclusive, embossed slipcover designed by Earl Kessler Jr., limited to 2,000. The film looks crisp and bright, although the high definition reveals such details as the least convincing stunt double for Kennedy.
Clark contributed a new audio commentary that's packed wall-to-wall with information about all aspects of the production. Unsurprisingly, he admits that Airplane was an influence, and he also mentions that Julia Louis-Dreyfus and James Spader were nearly cast in the lead roles. Cinematographer Nicholas Josef von Sternberg (Tourist Trap) sits down for a seven-minute interview in which he reflects on his experience of making Wacko and his other collaborations with Clark. Additional extras include several deleted scenes (presented without sound) and the trailer.
Wacko is available now on Blu-ray/DVD via Vinegar Syndrome.

Me: Lol I’m so dumb
A friend: No you’re not!
Me internally: Oh shit they know that my dumb bitch act is a facade in order to get people to lower their expectations of me and therefore relieving the pressure to succeed, slightly softening the blow to my self worth when/if failure happens. If they think highly of me, then their disappointment will doubly crush me as I have failed them more than if they had low expectations to begin with, as well as caused them to doubt their ability to have faith in others! It also doesn’t help that my inability to understand certain social cues, implied things, awful memory, worse concentration, or my terrible audio processing hinders me greatly when I do actually want to seem smart and contribute to a conversation or do well in a situation in which “smarts” are valued.
Me: Haha I’m glad you think so highly of me, but I really am pretty dense lol.
Me internally: Haha, got ‘em! I’m safe :)
