Just an update.

Lâu quá chưa biết gì, sợ quên cách ghi lại những sự kiện. Những sự kiện gần nhất mình từng trải và muốn ghi lại với sự hiện diện của ba chiếc tên.

Đúng là đời sống mênh mông quá, cơ duyên đưa đẩy cho ta gặp được rất nhiều chuyện kì lạ. À không, kì diệu mới đúng.

Trước đó mình tắc lưỡi tiếc hùi hụi khi gặp VL trong lúc bản thân đã có nhiều ràng buộc. Nên thay vì kết thúc nó như một lời chia tay mập mờ thì chúng mình vẫn giữ mối quan hệ bạn bè khắng khít. Nay bạn đã có bến bờ, mình thì vẫn êm đềm bên người đón đưa muôn thủa, chợt thấy quyết định hồi đó mặc dù tiếc nuối vì bỏ qua nhau nhưng cũng có phần đúng, đúng ở chỗ lương tâm đã chọn đường đi đúng. Ngoài lề một chút, sau này cũng dần nhận ra rằng tính cách hai bên không hề hợp nhau chút nào. Mình nhạy cảm, suy nghĩ nhiều. Bạn có tính nam mạnh, xông xáo năng nổ đúng độ tuổi mà nhiều người thường hay gọi là "when we are twenty-something"... Đôi khi tính nam đó hơi độc hại, nhưng mình lại thở phào vài lần rằng may mắn sao hai đứa không va vào nhau theo kiểu... iu đương. Nhưng dẫu sao thì cũng lấy làm mừng cho bạn, không gì an tâm bằng việc biết bạn ở xa có một nơi để nương náu. Dù bề ngoài có bất cần, mạnh mẽ đến đâu, ai nấy cũng đều mong muốn ít nhất có một người nghe mình nói một vài câu sau một ngày dài.

Vài ngày này, mình có duyên quen biết được với một anh (lại ở Mỹ, lại là ở Mỹ). Mình ngạc nhiên vì anh thật sự rất nghiêm túc và tử tế, thái độ rất gentleman (nam tánh). Và mình cực kì cảm thấy có lỗi trong câu chuyện này, vì ngay từ đầu mình không nói rõ ràng là mình single but unavailable, mình bõ ngỏ nhiều chi tiết mà lẽ ra mình không nên. Trong lòng mình đinh ninh rằng những cuộc trò chuyện sẽ kéo dài đủ để mình kể chi tiết hơn về sau. Mình có cảm tình với người này, nhưng mình lại an lòng khi nghĩ về việc lưu trú lâu dài tại Mã Lai, gắn bó cùng một người đóng thuế, nghe nhạc Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing và bập bẹ nói tiếng Quảng Đông. Mình muốn cảm ơn vì có một người xuất hiện làm mình thay đổi suy nghĩ về giọng nói vùng miền, về thái độ Việt kiều đối với người Việt. Nhưng có lẽ quyết định im lặng lại là quyết định khôn khéo nhất. Nếu mình nói ra, sự việc chẳng có gì cải thiện, mình lại vô tình trở thành người "make a mess" làm mọi chuyện rối tung. Không sao cả, không sao! Nhanh thôi mình sẽ quên đi những rung rinh (rung động lung linh) này. Chẳng bao lâu sau mình sẽ chẳng còn nhớ cảm giác mình dành cho người này là gì, vào thời điểm nào, kéo dài bao lâu, làm sao để kết thúc, làm sao để lãng quên... Nghĩ theo hướng tích cực thì nay trở đi, trong list những người mình mong hạnh phúc thì có thêm một người này -- người mình rất ngưỡng mộ về tính cách và thái độ sống.

Cũng là chuyện nhỏ phải quên đi

Sau cùng (last but not least), Amy finally found her home. Ngót nghét cũng gần một năm hai đứa tự dưng im bặt ngừng update tình hình cho nhau. Mình nghĩ nhỏ đó có một khoảng thời gian chông chênh hết sức, tìm việc, tìm người yêu... Giờ thấy nhỏ come back ngoạn mục, lòng mừng khôn xiết. Amy cứ như vậy quài nha mợi.

In the end (tóm lại) thì mình rút kinh nghiệm từ trải nghiệm với bạn Baby Fish và anh Bách Gia Lạc, cả Jack RockBoy nữa, trong phim cổ trang kiếm hiệp hay nói yêu quá thành hận quả không sai... Cố quá thành quá cố, sau cùng thì như mảnh gương vỡ, tuy sắc cạnh nhưng tan nát. Chẳng thà là tiếc lúc này mà lúc sau dĩ hòa vi quý chuyện cũ như mây như hoa, chứ chấp niệm thì cuối cùng không nhìn mặt nhau được nữa.

Every once in a blue moon, I get haunted by this drama, one I watched more than 25 years ago. 🧐🤔

The main female character is unforgettable, and the psychopathic villain (all the red flags 🚩🚩🚩) is fascinating too. But I wonder what made this show memorable despite not being the type of storylines I enjoy.

(I have a few favourites from this era which don’t surface much in my consciousness. There is only one show from this period which I rewatch once every decade, but the reasons for that is clear to me).

Now that it is available on YouTube, maybe a rewatch (skimming) is in order to clarify on the whys.

With the combined forces of Valentine’s Day and Thrillerathon, I’ve had a very mixed reading month! I’ve been enjoying a perfectly balanced diet of both light and dark and I think this may be why I literally can’t stop reading right now. In February, my total books read for 2020 reached 29, which is definitely a personal best for me, this early on in the year. I hope you’re all also smashing your reading goals so far! Without further pre-amble, here are five books I’ve read this month that you should definitely check out too. -Love, Alex x

SHOULD HAVE READ IT YEARS AGO: Rosemary’s Baby by Ira Levin

As a huge horror freak, Roman Polanski’s 1968 film adaptation of Rosemary’s Baby has been on my radar for years but of course, I wanted to read the book first. I finally read it for Thrillerathon and was completely hooked from the very first chapter. Struggling actor Guy Woodhouse and his wife Rosemary move into a new apartment in a building with a cursed past. Their elderly eccentric neighbours take a special interest in them, which only increases when Rosemary discovers she is pregnant. It’s a very quick read (my copy is only 256 pages) but it’s unbelievably intense. I felt so deeply unsettled for the entire narrative, which made the supernatural climax and incredibly strange ending even more creepy. An absolute must read for spooksters!

FICTION: Searching For Sylvie Lee by Jean Kwok

Some of my US bookish friends have been talking about this book for a little while, as it was released over there last year. It has finally been published in the UK and I’m happy to say I devoured it this month. When Amy Lee’s older sister Sylvie goes missing while visiting their Dutch relatives, she vows to retrace Sylvie’s steps and find out what happened. It’s both a mystery and a very moving exploration of identity issues and complex entangled familial relationships. With themes of jealousy, secrecy and a heart-wrenching glimpse into the Chinese-American experience, Searching For Sylvie Lee is the tragic domestic drama you’ve been waiting for.

MIDDLE-GRADE: The Girl Who Stole An Elephant by Nizrana Farook

There has been quite a bit of buzz around this charming middle-grade adventure recently. It follows Chaya, who steals riches to help out the poor and needy in her village but when she steals some jewels (and an elephant) from right under the palace’s nose, how will she get away with it? This fun-filled, heart-warming tale of friendship, bravery and doing what’s right is the perfect antidote to these long cold winter nights.

YA: Diary Of A Confused Feminist by Kate Weston

There’s something about the teenage diary format that I’m a total magpie for. I think it’s because on the whole, teens are often hilarious, loveable and obviously very relatable. Kat and her friends are certainly all of those things. I genuinely produced tears while following Kat’s mortifying journey to nailing her coursework, figuring out menstrual cups and mental health while trying to pin down Hot Josh for a date... all with the over-arching goal of doing good feminism! Fans of Georgia Nicholson and Holly Bourne’s Spinster Club books won’t be able to put this down.

GRAPHIC NOVEL: Mooncakes by Wendy Xu and Suzanne Walker 

There’s nothing like a cutesy bit of witchy escapism packed full of inclusivity and crazy demonic goings-on and Mooncakes definitely ticks all of those boxes. In a small New England town, Nova Huang helps out at her grandmothers’ whimsical bookshop and in the investigations of supernatural happenings. When her childhood crush, vagrant werewolf Tam Lang returns to town, an evil force is hot on their heels. I got major fuzzy feels from watching a beautiful romance unfold amidst such mortal peril! Accompanied by Wendy Xu’s charming artwork, this gorgeous tale of love, family and magic is a delicious treat that you definitely deserve.
