So here’s what Mario Vargas Llosa has to say about Marius and Cosette’s relationship in the novel:

“Now the love between these two is completely ethereal; the sex drive has been surgically removed so that their relationship can be purely one of feeling. Before the wedding the young people exchange one kiss, which is not repeated because, as the narrator says, neither Marius nor Cosette was aware of the existence of carnal desire...”

Llosa presents this lack of sexual attraction as a negative thing. I took one look at that and said “ace.” There’s also the fact that the two of them are never attracted to anyone other than each other, as well as how they’d much rather be chasing after Valjean on their wedding night than having sex.

Alrighty screw it, here’s some neurodivergent & lgbtq+ headcanons of musical characters, as someone who’s both of those things

Disclaimer 1: Bigotry and dumbassery will not be tolerated.

Disclaimer 2: These are just my opinions, headcanons I made for fun. You don’t have to agree with them, and you’re free to have your own interpretations. Just be respectful.

• Enjolras is ace and on the aro spectrum. He’s never felt sexual attraction towards anyone, and he’s only ever been romantically attracted to Grantaire. (And France./j)

• Grantaire is gay, and very in love with Enjolras. I don’t think I need to explain any more than this, lol.

• Cosette is bi. She discovered this after realizing she had a small crush on Eponine as well as Marius.

• Marius is also bi.

• Eponine is ace demiromantic, and also nonbinary. (Specifically using she/they pronouns.) She could never understand how the people around them could fall in love so fast, and with people they hardly knew. She didn’t fall for Marius until they formed a close connection with him. Regarding gender, they’ve never felt like she wasn’t a girl, but they didn’t feel fully like one. She felt sort of like a girl, but also like something else. It took them a while to figure out what exactly it was because she never felt like a boy, they just only partially felt like a girl.

• Orpheus is autistic. His special interest is music, and he loves talking about it to anyone who will listen. (Usually it’s Eurydice or Hermes.) He fidgets and stims a lot, and is also very awkward and doesn’t quite understand social cues. He tries his best, but always finds himself accidentally making things weird. Sometimes he worries that Eurydice will stop loving him because of his autistic traits, but she assures him that she loves him for who he is. Also, he’s somewhere on the ace spectrum, though he doesn’t use any specific labels.

• Persephone is also autistic, though she is much better at masking it than Orpheus. She also has ADHD.

• I’m chill with many different interpretations of Sweeney, but I think it’s quite interesting to hc him as trans or nonbinary. (I mean, what cis person names themself Sweeney?/j) He was in the closet when he first started dating Lucy. He was terrified of coming out to her, but eventually did, and she was quite accepting. She was relieved that maybe this meant they didn’t have to keep their relationship secret, and this was also how she realized she was bi. He also came out to Mrs. Lovett at some point before being sent away, and she was also very accepting, and has proven more than once that she’s really good at using people’s chosen names, as it was really easy for her to start calling him Mr. Todd when he returned from Australia. (Also, Mr. T could be a very punny nickname in this case.)

• Sweeney is also autistic. He’s gotten decent at masking in public, but whenever he’s at home, he makes no effort to hide his autistic traits. He stims quite frequently, usually by aggressively shaking his hands, punching his arm, fidgeting, or pacing. (Is pacing considered a stim? I feel like I do that a lot as a stim, but idk.) He also has an incredibly strong sense of justice. This is most notable when it comes to himself and how he’s been wronged, but he also feels that way on a societal level too. He rants a lot about people who get mistreated and people who abuse their power. (Mrs. Lovett can attest to this, as she’s usually the one he rants to.) Prior to being sent away, he felt like Lucy was the only person he could truly be himself around. Post-incarceration, Mrs. Lovett ends up being the one to fill that role. At first he’s quite nervous, but he ends up opening up more, and realizes that she’s a safe person to be himself around. In fact, she’s the easiest person for him to be himself around, because she’s also neurodivergent.

• Speaking of which, I headcanon Mrs. Lovett as being autistic and having ADHD. She’s always got several different trains of thought, is all over the place, and though she’s chatty, she’s a bit awkward, and feels that Sweeney is the only one who truly understands her. She’s also had many special interests and hyperfixations throughout her life, and is known to infodump a lot. She stims by flapping her arms and doing little dances. She also has some vocal stims, like humming or singing random notes to herself.

• Mrs. Lovett is ace. For a long time, she never told anyone because she was terrified of being judged for it. She was also scared that no one would ever love her because of it, and though there was no way Benjamin could’ve known, she sometimes felt like maybe her asexuality was part of why he chose Lucy over her. In attempts to impress him years down the line, she’d sometimes act in ways that felt strange and uncomfortable to her. In order to make herself feel better about it, she’d tell herself that it was like a comedy act, and that it was more about being funny. (She’s also the type to be really good at making sex jokes because sex is a joke to her, although she doesn’t joke like that often. Her preferred sense of humor is puns.) After a while, feeling like she can no longer hide it, she finally comes out to Sweeney, and nearly breaks down crying while doing so, fearing that she’d ruined her chance at him ever loving her. To her surprise, he accepts her, and he comforts her until she calms down, letting her know that she never has to make herself uncomfortable for his sake.

• Toby is the kind of person whom people can’t tell if he’s gay or aroace. He can’t tell which one it is either.

• Tbh, every version of Wednesday Addams feels autistic coded to me, so I’m including musical Wednesday as well.

• Morticia Addams has bi wife energy. Gomez is her number one ally.

• Lydia Deetz is hella sapphic. The Maitlands are the first people she comes out to, and they’re extremely accepting. After a while of being nervous, she finally comes out to her father and Delia, and they also accept her. Delia isn’t super educated on everything, though she’s well-meaning, and she even buys a sapphic flag colored crystal for Lydia. Beetlejuice takes her to her first pride event. It’s chaotic for everybody there due to Beej’s presence, but it’s definitely a fun time for Lydia.

• I also headcanon Lydia as autistic. Her special interests are ghosts, horror, and photography, and she loves infodumping about them.

• Beetlejuice is pansexual. I suppose that one’s not really a headcanon and is actually a thing in the musical, but I still wanted to list it.

• Martha from The Secret Garden is ace and autistic. I mostly say this because I’ve played her once, lol. Idk, I just like the idea.

• Veronica Sawyer is the biggest disaster bi.

• Jo March is ace and on the aro spectrum. She doesn’t really care all that much about sex or romance, though she has occasionally felt romantic attraction. She doesn’t really care about gender when it comes to the people she likes, but she does also identify as sapphic because she really likes girls. (I mostly like the idea of her being sapphic because people suspect that Louisa May Alcott was, and she based Jo off of herself.)

• Christine Daaé doesn’t really use any labels, but she did once find herself crushing on both Raoul and Meg.

• Meg Giry is sapphic, which she realized after having a crush on Christine.

• Because of that one line in Driving Through the Moonlight, I have decided that Prince Topher is ace now.

Éponine for the headcanon ask?

Sexuality Headcanon: Bi, with a general preference for women. She will occasionally go for a dude, though, as seen with Marius. I can appreciate the possibility of aro Eponine, though, in certain situations.

Gender Headcanon: Cis woman who occasionally dabbles in gender non-conformity.

A ship I have with said character: Marius/Eponine/Cosette. Marius has two hands.

A BROTP I have with said character: Eponine and Enjolras, who in my modern AU met in fifth grade before Eponine's family moved. Also Eponine and Montparnasse, who in my AU are middle school troublemakers.

A NOTP I have with said character: Eponine/Enjolras. It works like, on a symbolic level, but Enjolras is just so incredibly not interested in women that way that it would never, ever work.

A random headcanon: I think Eponine is a surprisingly good fighter, both in canon and in modern AU. I think she knows her way around weapons, too.

General Opinion over said character: Fascinating! There are so many different ways you can go with Eponine and so many different relationships you can explore with her.

Y) Have you seen the show?

YES. Not only I have watched the 2012 movie, the Madrid proshoot and a couple of the staged concerts, but also a few months ago I took a whole week off work to take a plane and go see in live with my dear mutual @pumpkinspice-prouvaire. And it was so good, I cried almost all the way through. I want to do it agaaaaaain. :(

Z) When did you discover the show?

Well, this is a funny story. I technically knew the novel before the musical (I watched the movie almost two years late because I was finishing the novel first), and I wasn't a big fan. Then I watched the movie, and I thought there was a good musical buried beneath the shitty sound, but I didn't bother to check. And then in 2021, I listened to the Original French Concept Album and I fel in LOVE. And here I am, a year and a half later, with 15 fics and an entire sideblog about it. ^^

X) Make me choose- Cosette or Éponine?

Éponine. All my respect for Cosette, who is a better character than we give her credit for, but I'm just too aro for this shit. Every time she goes "can someone fall in love so fast" I feel the urge to answer "no, no you can't". x)

And 'On my own' is AMAZING.

C) Favorite song?

Depending on the mood, it's a toss between 'At the end of the Day' and 'Bring him Home'. 'At the End of the Day' is amazing and it pumps me up, and 'Bring him Home' makes me tear up.

Unless we're taking into consideration the Concept Album, in which case the answer is 'L'Air de la Misère', hands down.

A) Favorite character?

*side-eyes their sideblog, which is literally called @aromantic-enjolras, and the Enjolras cosplay they put on to go see the show* Enjolras. My dear beloved aromantic revolutionary. How much I love you, both you and your French disco singer alter-ego.

Special mention to Steven Hall's Grantaire, who lives rent-free in my brain just because of how weird his performance was. (In a good way, he did a great job, it's just not the Grantaire I'm used to)

There were two ships that popped into my head immediately when you asked this one, so…

Les Miserables: Jehanparnasse

NO THANK YOU. They just don't work thematically at ALL for me, like this isn't even a case of opposites attract or differences are the spice of life. This is everything about both characters is practically ANATHEMA to the other one and I just honestly nope out of a story SO HARD every time I see they're a ship in it. I can't even see it working in a modern AU. Just… NO THANK YOU. NOT FOR ME.

The Untamed: Jiang Cheng x literally anyone

I know Xicheng is a popular ship and I have no idea what the ship name for NHX x JC is, but I've seen that a lot too, and I'm sorry but Jiang Cheng is solidly aro/ace in my head, so I just can't really see him shipped with anyone, except in a strictly queerplatonic/married because politics/I'm a sect leader kind of way. Ironically, as much as I dislike what TUD tried to force between JC and WQ in canon, that's the ONLY popular JC ship I can kind of almost see? Because politically they would make a good match if either a) Sunshot hadn't happened or b) her offshoot of the clan had risen to preeminence. I think they'd make a solid working pair and give each other plenty of space to do their own things and that they could make it work. But that's really the only way I could see that happening.

…although.

(I WILL own up to having a bit of a soft spot for ChengXian. Because I absolutely love me a codependent mess of a relationship where they will LITERALLY sacrifice everything for each other, and I could see that going platonic, because WWX wouldn't cross that line is JC didn't want to, or non-platonic because JC would give WWX anything he wanted if he'd just ask. So, yeah. I do have a soft spot for that one, ngl. ;D And OOPS, went off topic, so MOVING ON.)

14. Unpopular opinion about your fandom?

The influx of antis/purity wankers/people who cancel MXTX without even reading a translation of MDZS. That is just a whole mess of YIKES that drove me… almost completely out of the fandom, ngl. It definitely drove me out of the main ship and into the fringes. I still love Wangxian, don't get me wrong, but I hardly ever read or write them anymore, because all the fandom wank about the novel and Western voices screaming over Chinese and Chinese-diaspora voices just… no. It sent me running for the hills. :(

22. Popular character you hate?

…does fanon!Grantaire count? How about fanon!Jehan? Fanon!bromo!Feuilly was a solid NOPE for me too. Fanon!infant!Courfeyrac ALSO a giant NOPE. And though Fanon!Bromo!Feuilly seems to have FINALLY disappeared along with his counterpart Fanon!Bromo!Bahorel, thank FUCK, the others are still solidly prolific characterizations and it STILL annoys me. :P

23. Unpopular character you love?

Though this is becoming less of a problem… FEUILLY FEUILLY FEUILLY. I feel like for YEARS I was one of like… five voices shouting into the void about how amazing Feuilly was and NO ONE HEARD US. Remember how you'd have 'les amis as' posts with everyone EVEN MARIUS, EPONINE, COSETTE, AND FUCKING MONTPARNASSE, OF ALL PEOPLE… and they'd FORGET FEUILLY ENTIRELY?? Like… fuck THAT. Sorry. Still bitter. :P

Ooh thanks for the ask!

How I feel about this character: I love him s o m u c h. If I’m being honest here, his insane drunken ramblings are one of the best parts of the brick.

All the people I ship romantically with this character: Enj, kind of. It’s complicated because i love them together but theres the part of me that headcanons Enj as ace/aro

My non-romantic OTP for this character: Him and Eponine, but I also love the idea of him jehan and gavroche together, the different chaos would be beautiful

My unpopular opinion about this character: I kinda like the unrequited love thing, I mean I want him to be happy but also

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I wish we got to see more of him doing the things he’s good at, his whole story is often portrayed as being sad because of Enj, but he also had so much talent and intelligence that’s only hinted at, and i feel like that’s part of what’s tragic about him. Sorry, that made no sense.

Les Mis

SINGING THE SONG OF ANGRY MEN is just my catch-all les mis doc from before I transferred everything from Word to Scrivener, meaning everything in there is before reading the book. I was probably really unfair to Cosette because i thought of her as competition for Eponine's happiness. Anyway, have a e/R fic i wrote based purely on dash osmosis, and complete with misspellings!

resurrection? was just a really strong image i had to write out and was always curious what the larger story would be. Basically Grantaire is smiling soppily at Enjolras and then thinks "That was before they died" and is sad and thoughtful about The Ideal.

Gray Is Okay - turns out I've already posted this one on tumblr! Grantaire and Enjolras talk about pronouns and convictions and uncertainty!

brietbart online - short fic where Enjolras gets himself worked up over right wing newspapers because “It’s good to know how the enemy thinks” and Grantaire helps him calm down. (Pretty sure this one was inspired by someone being Very Extremely Wrong about one of my favorite episodes of star trek, and then I noticed the source) This wasn't very good writing and it wasn't really going anywhere, so I'm never going to post it.

“Please Come Inside” - Enjolras is greyromantic and mostly he just loves all his friends, but he has a queerplatonic relationship with Courfeyrac which slowly develops into (possibly?) romantic attraction, and he's very confused and upset by this internal change and has to Process.

from my vague notes:

at some point they end up at a chinese restaurant because courfeyrac calls it "the ultimate comfort food" enjolras always makes a token protest when they go, but he secretly loves it just as much or more because salty foods are his weakness "we don't need to change anything we're doing," courfeyrac says as he stabs at an egg roll with a single chopstick, "or we can. Uh, your choice. But no matter what I won't be ashamed of you, and i'll trust that you aren't ashamed of me." (courfeyrac is not aro-spec, but he did introduce enjolras to the term) and they talk about their feelings and enjolras's main fear, besides that he's not aromantic at all, is that he'll be forcing courfeyrac into the closet, because even if whatever-he's-feeling is close to what someone else might call romantic, he still Can Not bear to have himself called a boyfriend courfeyrac mostly just wants enjolras to be comfortable, and he's willing to take whatever form their relationship eventually comes

Friendlier Skies - this one's my les mis space au, with a bunch of shorter stories that all fit into the same solar system. One of my favorite elements is that the Gorbeau Building has been remixed into a ship that accepts literally anyone as passengers with no questions asked.

And the Narnia and Star Wars are going under a cut!

Narnia

Gallivanters is an AU where instead of being from Narnia, Caspian is just a Spanish transfer student at the boarding school where Edmund and Peter are, and they have a bunch of nerdy adventures. I'm pretty sure Caspian/Peter was endgame in my head, but i never got that far.

once a king or queen was just my catch-all Narnia doc. Lots of Edmund, lots of Susan, and one ficlet where Susan Pevensie and Carrie White talk about the family they've lost and the girls they don't need to be anymore. I swear I remember writing a lot of Jill and Eustace too, but it must have gotten lost when transferring computers.

Theory of Narnia - technically not a WIP anymore, but I used the plot of Narnia to write an essay explaining different Theory of Knowledge concepts for extra credit in high school. It had footnotes and everything!

To Fill Different Lives was a passion project for several years! It was supposed to be for a fic exchange in 2010 but it got too big for me and I had to drop out. It's Jadis after the Last Battle, recounting her history to no one because there's no one left. Many things about it make me cringe looking back at it, but I still looove this opening:

I have lived for a long time, long enough to fill several different lives. Looking back, I begin to realize just how similar all of these lives have been. Each time, I had power, but needed more. Each time, I chose a color and assumed it as a part of my identity. And each time, there was a boy.

Star Wars

There Will Be Light - oops, I already posted this one on tumblr too! Luke has bad dreams after Obi-Wan is killed, and Han comforts him. Not meant to be shippy but it definitely could be!

Qui-Gon lives (and somehow everything is worse??) - never got past the "vague chatting" stage, but our conversation started with this

lizardrosen: you know how qui-gon tells padme something like "i can only defend you, i can't fight a war for you" ? and then the jedi order DOES fight a war for the republic eirenical: YES. lizardrosen: how *pissed* would he have been if he'd lived to find out about kamino and the clones and all of that eirenical: *nodnodnod* I think about that a lot, actually. About how Qui-Gon would have dealt with the war. Somehow, I think it would have either broken him completely... or broken his compassion for others. AND I'M NOT SURE WHICH WOULD BE WORSE.

and then we talked about how qui-gon and obi-wan and anakin are a really solid trio for a long time, so it takes a long time to break qui-gon's compassion, but it happens hard, and "obi-wan and anakin are never quite able to be the dynamic duo; they'll always be three minus one but they try, they try so HARD"

Obi-Wan after Revenge of the Sith is just what it says on the tin. He's sad and alone and trying to connect to Qui-Gon, but not quite ready for him even when he does finally show up. This one also has a really good opening paragraph!

Everyone Obi-Wan loves is taller than him. Everyone he has loved? Used to love? No, he loves them still, even those gone from the world, or out of his grasp. He would have grown to love Luke and Leia too, tiny as they are, if given half the chance, which is exactly why he cannot allow himself to take that chance.

1. My take on their canon relationship

i mean...they don’t really have one? We don’t know if they’ve ever interracted so like. there’s nothing to have a take on CANONICALLY bc. there’s nothing.

2. Do I ship them?

If i ever answer yes to this question please assume i’ve died and the government has taken over this account to spread the heterosexual agenda. fuck no.

3. Reasons why I do/don’t ship them:

I’ve talked abt this a lot, and the main point is that enj canonically does not like women. you can argue this point in junction with the explicit allusions to gay historical figures in the novel, you can take it at face value to say he’s aro/ace. either way, women aren’t in the equation. also, all of the enjonine stuff i’ve seen is grossly out of character and often portrays ep as a poor lonely girl and enj as a strong brooding manly man more akin to edward cullen than enjolras. personally, my theory is that the ship became popular because straight women could self-insert-ship with enjoloras via identifying with eponine, but that’s only a theory

4. Headcanon, if any:

They’re like weird cousins who didn’t really know each other until finding out they have a mutual friend and then start doing crimes together ajxjsjxjsh

Les Mis Trans Week 2019 – Les Amis Headcanons

Enjolras (he/him/his) is openly and proudly out as a transman, even before he starts Les Amis. He has started socially transitioning since his teenage years, with full support from his childhood best friends Combeferre and Courfeyrac.

A few months after Enjolras tells his best friends he’s trans, Combeferre (she/her/hers) also comes out – first to herself, then to Enj and Courf not long after. Enjolras is in the process of trying out names, so he and ‘Ferre decide to switch names for a while. The names don’t stick, but it is a weird month where Enjolras answers when people call ‘Ferre and vise versa. Eventually, they get fed up and decide to just go with their last names. Courfeyrac does the same in solidarity because the poor baby still doesn’t know yet. When Les Amis starts, everyone picks up on it and it become their ThingTM.

Jehan (fea/fer/fers) is not the only non-binary person in Les Amis, but fea is the first to come out. This prompts other members to also come out or start questioning if they are really cis. There is a time where Les Amis starts every single meeting with someone - sometimes multiple people - yelling “Wait I have an announcement to make!” Long story short, none of them is now cisgender, and Marius is the token Cis FriendTM.

Courfeyrac (he/him, she/her, they/them - depends on the day), who up until this point still identify as a gender-nonconforming cis man, realizes that oh my gosh I can be neither a man nor a woman? They have never felt like they fit neatly into either category. So, they pull Jehan aside after fea comes out. The two of them sit down together, have a heart-to-heart about gender identity, and Courfeyrac comes home and do a ton of research. Jehan sends them a [non-binary flowchart] – and even though following the chart doesn’t really help them find their identity, they also get the vocabulary to start reading up on different non-binary labels. So now we have a glittery genderfluid theater child who race across the gender spectrum in sparkly, neonlight-flashing heelys.

Bossuet (he/him/his) has changed labels and pronouns four times in one month and still hasn’t found what fits him best. He is using he/him pronoun at the moment for the sake of convenience, but it doesn’t mean he likes it.

Joly (ze/hir/hirs) is a demigirl. Ze leans toward the feminine side of the spectrum but doesn’t completely identify with womanhood.

Grantaire says gender is fake and a social construct and uses no pronoun because I say gender is fake and a social construct and also use no pronoun.

Neutrois and Genderpunk Bahorel (ey/em/eir) who destroys gender norms everyday with perfect eyeliners and jean jackets, onto which Feuilly hand-embroils roses and daisies and lilies. Eir hands might be pretty with nails painted in shiny red and pink, but those same hands are also capable of punching transphobes black and blue.

Feuilly (they/them/their) who everyone jokingly calls a straight-A person because they are aracial, aro-ace, and agender. (From [this fic] by Feyland)

Bonus:

Eponine (she/her or he/him) is a lesbian, with no gender description added. Her only connection to gender and/or womanhood is her attraction to woman.

Cosette (xe/xir/xirs) is non-binary. Xe presents very femininely and is comfortable with how xe presents. Xe cringes everytime someone calls xe “she” or “ma’am” and gets slightly defensive when people seem to assume xe is cis.

Musichetta (she/her/hers) comes out as a transgirl when her sister Combeferre comes out to her. The conversation goes something like this: “I’m a woman.” “Me too!?” They help each other figuring things out, go shopping for clothes together, and just generally be good siblings for each other. When Chetta comes out as polyamorous, Combeferre has an initial freak out session because holy patria her sister is dating? but ultimately supports her like the amazing sister and human she is.

I love pretty much every single one of these characters (Holly and George hold special places in my heart) but the Skull is just so fun. I love his snark and the way he grows to care about Lucy over the course of the series

this is really hard. Of the people who show up in more than one book and aren’t an antagonist, I’ll have to say Flo Bones. I don’t dislike her, but i just sort of feel meh about her

a random thought:

I bet after the ghosts stop becoming as much of a problem (like in a couple decades), and especially with technology that lets adults see ghosts, the role of children in this society changes a lot. They go to school, they aren’t expected to be in life-endangering situations. Instead of being the ones to protect people, they start becoming the ones to be protected. But even though this shift gradually comes about, it never really goes all the way to how our society views kids, at least not for several generations

An unpopular opinion:

I have no idea what the popular opinions are. I think that despite (and actually because of) their similarities in personality, Bartimaeus and Skull would hate each other if they ever met. They would clash personality-wise, but also see the mistakes, weaknesses, and annoying parts of the other one and make them feel more insecure about their own self. Like “if that guy who is so similar to me can be like this, what would it take for me to be like that?” And also, “if he’s like that, people who know me less will think I’m like that, WHICH I”M NOT”

My Canon OTP:

I mean the only canon pairing is Lucy and Lockwood. Can I say Holly and her roommate?

My Non-canon OTP:

I don’t really have one, but Holly gives off big lesbian vibes, so her with Lucy maybe?

Most Badass Character:

All of them?? Honestly, Lockwood is pretty impressive though. His whole family died, and he regularly goes up against stuff that could kill him, and on top of that he just runs his own business as a teenager. And it’s honestly the last one that sells him as most badass for me

Most Epic Villain:

It’s been a while since I’ve read these books, and I don’t remember it too well, but the whole Creeping Shadow thing was so creepy, especially because it was the first I learned of forays into the Other Side

Pairing I am not a fan of:

Anything involving George. I relate to him too much as an aro, and he just doesn’t seem the type to have romantic relationships

Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another):

Holly or maybe Lucy? I just really don’t like how big their rivalry was in the first book Holly was in it, especially because it was so motivated by jealousy on Lucy’s side

That said, I do really like how Lucy and Holly’s friendship develops throughout the series. I also love Skull and Lucy

How I feel about this character:

She’s great!! I love her and even though she is very far from perfect, she wants better for herself and to be better, and she deserves a lot better

Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character:

I ship her with Cosette, though not particularly hard. I’ve seen some good Marius/Eponine/Cosette fic too

My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character:

I really like her interacting with Gavroche because they’re both in shitty situations because of their parents, but in different ways. In some ways, Gavroche is more free, and definitely more full of joy, and I like the idea of her looking out for him while he brings a bright spot to Eponine’s pretty depressing life. But also I love her having strong platonic relationships with anyone, just let her have friends

My unpopular opinion about this character:

It’s not so unpopular in the fandom on tumblr, but I don’t think she’s actually in love with Marius, and either way, reducing her story to being just about unrequited teenage love does a disservice to her as a character

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon:

I wish she lived and could have her life improve, and just for her to have friends and support

Favorite friendship for this character:

Other than Gavroche? Maybe Marius? I once saw a post that was text over screenshots of the 2012 movie, with Eponine saying “I have feelings for you!” and Marius saying “I also have feelings for you!” Then it said, “Narrator: the feeling was friendship but neither of them had experienced it before.”

My crossover ship:

I don’t particularly have one because I’m bad at just thinking of stuff like this off the top of my head, but honestly anyone who would respect her and make her happy and allow her to be soft

Aro Ezekiel Jones (which I’m answering the relationship questions for)

I think either before I started watching the show or soon afterwards you mentioned seeing Ezekiel as aro, so I just took that. The thing that cemented it was probably the Cindy episode

My thoughts:

He just kind of doesn’t care about romance or being aro. I don’t think he’s super open about it, but he also doesn’t try to hide anything and he’s probably dropped it in conversation with acquaintances before if the topic comes up. Until he joined the librarians, he hasn’t really had anyone he was close enough to that he would bother actually coming out to, but now that he’s faced with it, he’s sort of like ‘aw shit i actually care what these people think about me. and i know it’s nothing to be ashamed about, but do they know that?’ During the video game loop, he probably did come out to them to see how they would react, and it was all positive. It takes him a bit to actually get around to doing it, but he does end up telling them he’s aro

What makes me happy about them:

He’s so full of love, even if he tends to cover it up. Like he probably thought he would live his life more or less alone, and he was fine with it, but now he has people who he sees regularly and who care about him and enjoy being around, and it’s just great

What makes me sad about them:

I don’t think I headcanon any other of the characters, so he doesn’t have any aro buddies

Things done in fanfic that annoys me:

I mean there isn’t a lot of aro!Ezekiel fic, and him having romantic relationships in fic doesn’t bother me (or at least when it does, I don’t read fic about it). I’m not sure I’ve seen this in fic, but he’s a complex character who is actually a really great person who cares about the other librarians, and I wouldn’t want to see him reduced to ‘jokes and steals things’

Things I look for in fanfic:

Since there aren’t a lot of aro Ezekiel fics, in theory, I want him to be confident in his identity and also like “romance?? what is even up with that???”

My wishlist:

I have no idea how this would work, but aro Ezekiel in a leverage crossover where he has his librarian found family and a thief found family would be great

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other:

It’s not something I particularly ship but there’s some good content with Ezekiel/Jake/Cassandra

My happily ever after for them

I can’t imagine a traditional ‘happily ever after’ for him. He’s just always doing new things, never fully in retirement, even if he’s a hundred years old and no longer going on missions for the Library. He grows to be more confident in his relationships with the other librarians. I can’t imagine him being a super open person, but he feels comfortable sharing stuff with the others, and they’re always there for each other, and they also get to do fun things with magic without the world being in danger

mm I wouldn’t say I really have any solid headcanons for character’s sexualities ^^’ I can see Javert as aro ace, ace and demi romantic, grey ace, demisexual, gay or bi uwu (Demi and bi is my default but that’s just me projecting uwu’’) My Valjean hcs are pretty much the same tbh

Honestly Valjean and Javert are the characters I think about most but Enjolras is gay and also maybe grey ace and I’ve seen some posts I liked from the Eponine fandom on lesbian Eponine and that’s a good headcanon uwu

i feel like i’m one of the only people in the fandom who doesn’t headcanon eponine as a lesbian and sometimes i feel bad for it? because it’s so common that it’s treated like Basically Canon like Enj being gay is even though there’s not that kind of textual evidence for her and i just feel bad for hcing her as bi instead of a lesbian

no need to feel bad about your headcanons! while I love lesbian eponine, I also love bi eponine, or pan eponine, and don’t even get me started on my love for aro eponine. while eponine being a lesbian is common in the fandom, there’s no reason for you to apologize for having hcs of her as another sexuality!

omg!!! Okay hold on thight because this’ gon’ be a loong post:at the moment les amis who don’t have tattoos are: Enjolras, Courfeyrac, Joly, Marius and probably Cosette. I’m also sure that Eponine has tattoos but I’ve never drawn them because I can’t decide

Grantaire left arm: - 3 roses (meaning: unknown)- black band: it’s a personal reminder of his depression, it works as both a statement for himself, meaning that he doesn’t want to go back into that darkness, and as a general symbol, a black bad/stripe usually means mourn and he feels like he’s lost years/experiences/his smile for a long time, so he’s technically mourning- “farouche” in cursive: a lot of people call him that, especially Enjolras, so he decided that was his favourite adjective everright arm: - “art.”: a personal reminder that his goal is to make art from life, the full stop means that it’s a statement and that art’s the only thing needed to survive- black band: it’s a personal reminder like the other one, this time it’s a memo to stay sober

A bad past? Depression??? only Jehan knows)- black band: a symbol of mourning to remember a young crew/gang member that had passed away too soon- geometric minimal diamond: a memory from his past as a criminal, it’s all smudged because it was his first tattoo ever and he’s still very attached to it, back in the day it was very fashionable and the Patron Minette’s members all did it as a group symbol- rose and knife crossed inside a circle (minimal): again for aesthetic purposes and because he loved how that juxtaposition represented him__this is all I have for you, it came out so long so thank you to anyone who reads through all of this__*I in no way mean that aro/ace people are “purer”, I just feel like lilies could easily became aro/ace symbolic flowers

Modern Amis (and co.) Coming-Out Headcanons

(I don’t even remember how the subject came up but @beatlemaniacinthetardis and I were taking about the Amis getting together at someone’s house and telling each other stories from when they came out of the closet. We stayed up way too late last night coming up with these so we felt the need to share)

Bahorel comes out to his family when he goes downstairs in the rainbowest of rainbow shirts, announces that he’s going to Pride, and just sort of stares at each of them until they understand.

Courfeyrac realizes he’s gay in his preteen years and it takes him like a year to work up the courage to come out to his friends (Enjolras and Combeferre) and family (mom and dad). When he tells them they all just go “sweetie, we know”. Enjolras and Combeferre bake him a confetti cake that says CONGRATS in edible glitter. Courfeyrac cries.

Feuilly doesn’t really have anyone to come out to, since he has no living relations and he went straight into a job at a young age. He kind of...forgets to, to be honest, so he’s not out to his co-workers. They only find out when Bahorel comes to get him from work one day and he kisses Feuilly hello.

Like in canon, Cosette grows up into a pretty girl who loves attention. She’s very meticulous about the way she looks and is like nice when she notices guys checking her out. One day, though, a pretty girl smiles at her and does the checking-out thing and Cosette is like oh no when she feels her heart do the THING. She tells papa later that evening, and he’s amazing and supportive because, well, he’s Jean Valjean. He joins her marching in the Pride parade the following summer.

Enjolras’ coming out doesn’t go so well. He’s pretty much known he likes boys since forever ago, but only tells his parents at the end of high school. His parents are cold and arrange a Nice Girl for him to marry at the age of 25 or whatever. Enjolras fights with them on it, but when they continue to stand firm he decides they don’t deserve to be in his life anyway. He moves in with Combeferre, who he came out to years ago.

Joly and Bossuet, who have basically known each other since birth, come out to each other before anyone else. They then make a pact to come out to their friends and family on the same day. Bossuet’s parents don’t take it so well--his dad is pissed, and his mom tries to push him to go back to church. His friends, too, say “yeah that’s cool” but he can tell every time he says something that even approaches the subject of his sexuality that they’re weird about it. Joly’s, on the other hand, went well. His friends start teasing him like “yeah man I bet you thought you had appendicitis the first time you saw a guy you liked” and stuff, but they’re cool with it. Joly’s family ends up pretty much adopting Bossuet, too. Bossuet’s parents come knocking for him one day and Joly’s four younger siblings work together to slam the door in their face. (Bonus: since those two have a hivemind, they tell each other about being poly the same day.)

The subject of their combined affections, Musichetta, was a total badass about her coming out. She told her parents straight up that she was poly/pan. They were not sold on the idea, but she told them to accept her as she was or she’d leave without a second thought. It takes them a while to get used to the idea, but Chetta answers whatever questions they have. They grow to understand her, and come to love Joly and Bossuet once the three of them start dating.

Jehan has a hard time with it all. They WANT to come out, to family and friends alike, but they want to understand themselves before they try and explain it to anyone else. They tell this to the Amis who are all just like...you don’t have to ever figure it out. It’s alright. No matter who you are or what you do or who you love, we’ll be here to support you. Jehan cries really hard because they’ve been so confused for so long and their found family is saying that it’s okay to be unsure forever because who needs a title anyway? The greatest of group hugs happens that day, Jehan smiling in the centre of it. (Bonus: shortly after that, Jehan asks the Amis to start saying “they/them”. Grantaire buys a ton of neutral-looking clothes with gross flower print that he knows Jehan will LOVE. Enjolras falls in love with R a lil bit more since he knows he doesn't have all that much money but he spent a bunch of it for Jehan to be happy and comfortable anyway).

Combeferre comes out to all his friends shortly after he meets them, but he never comes out to his family at all. He knows they’re homophobic, and a) he doesn’t like to start fights, and b) he decides that they don’t deserve to know. In an act of silent rebellion, he secretly gets a part-time job as a sales guy at a boot shop for drag queens. Courfeyrac’s the shop’s #1 customer. (Kinky Boots AU someone back me up here)

While Marius is almost entirely on the straight side, but every so often he’ll meet a man who sets his little Pontmercy heart aflutter. Courf is one of those guys and when they end up roommates Marius kind of...”aksdjasgkdhdh Lord save my poor bisexual soul”. But then he meets Cosette. He doesn’t tell her for ages because he’s terrified of what she’ll think, but eventually he works up the courage. She laughs because hey she’s bi too!! From that point on, they point out attractive people of various genders to each other while they’re on dates. (Bonus: one day, Marius and his grandfather get into an argument about politics over dinner. In a moment of passion, Marius stands and yells “LONG LIVE NAPOLEON! ALSO, I SOMETIMES LIKE BOYS!” His grandfather faints into his chair.)

Eponine never really had friends, so she has no frame of reference for what romantic attraction feels like. When she meets Marius, she figures instantly that what she’s feeling is romantic love. Shortly after, she meets Cosette and feels the same way. Now she’s confused. And then she meets the rest of the Amis and feels the same way about ALL of them. It’s very strange to have a crush on everyone, she thinks. With Grantaire and Jehan’s help, she comes to understand that what she’s feeling is, in fact, platonic love. And god, is she relieved to know. The only family members she tells about being aro/ace are Gavroche and Azelma. Azelma is like “I think that might be me too” and Gav is like “sweet, more lovely ladies for me”.

FINALLY, Grantaire. He’s never really given a shit about what gender his lovers were, and never given a shit about who knows about it. He doesn’t know or care whether or not his parents know. But oh, god, then he meets Enjolras, and can no longer imagine loving anyone else of any gender. When the Amis share their coming out stories, he just snorts and says ‘does it count if you’re only attracted to one person?’ and he accidentally stares at Enj as he says it and the Amis collectively suck in a breath because if they didn’t know who he was talking about before, they certainly do now. (Bonus: Everyone braces themselves when Enj stands up and goes to R, thinking Enj is going to try and start shit, but they start applauding when instead Enjolras grabs Grantaire’s face and kisses the life out of him).
