Can we give it up for guys with hair like Hobie please?
Can we get a round of applause for the black men in the chat with freeform locs? Or unkempt dreads? Or thick unlocked afros?
Because there's something we need to talk about -
Hobie's Hair: Representation, Reality, and Internalized Racism within Fandom
Here we are again - an essay about Hobie and racism. But this time - it's not coming from outside the house. Oh no, no no no.
Tumblr media
The racism is coming from inside the house.
We need to talk about Hobies hair, how we treat black hair as a community, and the deep internalized racism that is revealed when Hobies hair is brought to reality.
[A LONGish essay about Hobie, Race, Hair, and the HEAVY internalized racism towards 4C hair. This essay doesn't explain much about black hair, but it's more a conversation of self-hate and representation]
Like Hobies hair is beautiful and it's genuinely heartbreaking to see so many people in the fandom be like 'yeah I love his hair but I could never date an actual guy with hair like that'
Or cringing at guys with nappy hair, or overall speaking about how off-putting their hair is.
Hobies hair is beautiful, but the amount of people that like it in canon - and only canon - is too high.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They'll say that for some reason, when it comes to real freeform locs - they can't find it attractive. That they for some reason, they still have the idea that people with freeform locs don't - or even can't, wash their hair, even if they know that's not true.
And like.. come on, guys. Come on.
There are actual black men with hair like that. There are HOBIE COSPLAYERS with hair like that.
and they're in the fandom too.
In fact, I'd say a good majority of black men have hair like Hobie - we're just forced to shave it off.
For us, anything longer than a high top that isn't an afro with nice defined curles is considered unruly, unkepted, or outright dirty.
People will just straight up call it dirty or say they don't wash their hair.
Just because their hair looks weird.
Because really that's all it is. It LOOKS WEIRD. And because it looks weird - and because it's something inherently exclusive to black people, it's admonished as being disgusting or ugly.
White men are able to roll out of bed 365 days a year and take a shower, leaving the house with barely even any hair gel.
That's considered normal, average. Boring even.
A black man rolls out of bed the same 365 days, washes his hair the same way, and leaves the house - and he's unkempt.
Why? Because his hair naturally locs up.
And because it locks up, it looks weird, and since it looks weird it's inappropriate for the workplace, it's unattractive, eww do they even wash it?
It's so SAD. Like genuinely sad. Especially in the Hobie fandom.
I think it needs to be highlighted that Hobies hair AREN'T wicks. Wicks are formed using tools. Wicks are locs - but they're manipulated locs. They take styling to look that way.
HOBIES HAIR is freeform. As in, that's just how it grows from it head. That's not a hairstyle like hair spikes, or Gwen's undercut.
That's just his hair.
And it's the only hair type on earth that's ubiquitously known as ugly.
So ugly in fact that men who have it are encouraged to either 1) shave it and maintain that shave at risk of ridicule or 2) invest lots of money and time into maintaining a detangled manicured afro of 'reasonable' size and shape or 3) get it braided and maintain those braids at risk of ridicule- you see where I'm going with this.
For people like me and Hobies, those with 4C hair: We're told quite early, even by the black people around us, that our hair as it is is unpresentable.
We're expected to manipulate and manage our hair every day of our lives, because if we don't, even for a week or two - we're suddenly 'unpresentable', unemployable, and straight up unattractive. Even the sight of our new growth is a sign we need to 'get our hair done'.
For us, hair growth isn't exciting. It's just anther reminder we need to go back to the salon or barbers.
And y'all - it's EXHAUSTING. Physically and mentally exhausting.
That's why Hobie has hair like that.
Because it's exhausting, it's unfair. And it's accepted. Even in this fandom.
Hobie does it because it's not right.
He, as a person, understands that he has a right to exist anywhere he pleases - in his entirety, regardless of how disruptive you see him.
Hobie wears his freeform hair because he doesn't want to physically manipulate his hair - and he doesn't want society to manipulate his hair either.
It's a noble cause.
And you know what, the dudes you see with hair like this - the ones you think might be dirty or ugly - they're wearing it for THE SAME REASON.
The reason men like The Weeknd and Jay-Z chose to wear their hair this way is because they are literally the only black men in society who can wear their hair like that and still keep a job. I'm so serious.
If you are a black man, or a black person in general - you better have 'fuck you' amounts of money if you'd like to have freeform locs.
Because your chances of getting a job hit the floor. The number of people interested in dating you - or even seeing you as attractive, drops like 95%.
All because your natural hair is visible to other people.
And they find that so distracting or so unattractive that it calls your very hygiene - or housing status - into question. (Yes, I have heard people say that they suspect men with freeform hair are wearing it only because they are homeless.)
And now that we have a character like Hobie - this attitude, one that we're all taught, is something we have to face head-on.
Because it fucking SUCKS to be told all your life that your hair is ugly and inherently more dirty than all others to the point that the only option is it's rigorous rearrangement or straight up removal.
And then you get a character like Hobie Brown, such good representation!!!
Only to turn around and see the fandom going 'Yeah, Hobies hot. But guys with hair ACTUALLY like that? Uhhh, no thanks. Sorry, I'll pass. Respectfully, no.'
And you wanna know the most fucked up thing about it? Huh!?
A large portion of the black people - black women in specific - who say they don't find freeform hair attractive, or hair like Hobies attractive -
THEY HAVE HAIR LIKE HOBIES TOO.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So many of y'all who say this would absolutely have hair like Hobies if you didn't detangle it.
The statement in itself - age the critique of freeform hair - is one of self-hate.
So many of the women I see say this have 4c hair themselves.
But because of the stigma and discrimination we received as children, many of us don't even know what our hair looks like unpermed, undamaged, without being detangled once a week.
If you are a black woman and you wouldn't date a guy with hair like this, please candidly ask yourself:
If you didn't detangled your hair for a year - would your hair look like Hobies?
Because I'm pretty sure for a good deal of y'all the answer is yes.
For the majority of us, if we didn't detangle, decondition, oil, cut, or shave our heads - if all we did was wash or hair - we'd have hair like Hobies.
It would stick out and stand up and clump together and that's FINE.
In fact, it's better for your hair.
Ever wonder why we have to moisturize and detangle and condition and use oil treatments and-
Because our hair naturally wants to loc. When it locs like Hobies hair, the oils from the root of your scalp can coat the strands easier, like a rope sucking up water.
A single piece of string can't move or suck up much water. But a thick thick rope can.
Just the same, when your hair is detangled - it's hard for the hair to move or suck up the oil. So it sits on the scalp and builds up. Like a single string.
When your hair is loced, the oils can move from your scalp down (or rather for us, UP) your hair way easier. Like a rope sucking it up.
Making your scalp cleaner, your hair more moisturised and overall more healthy.
At that point, you don't NEED conditioner. Or oil. Or aloe or whatever the hell the beauty supply got.
You just need to wash it, and your locs help regulate your hair. The help keep your oil production even and your hair moisturized.
Because your hair can self regulate. Just like everyone else's.
I'm learning this myself. As someone who just started their semi-freeform locs a couple months ago: My hair is as clean and as soft as it's ever been in my life.
My whole life I thought my hair was oily as fuck.
If I breathed too hard I'd get build up. Parting my hair physically hurt and almost ever hair style I ever tried was sensory hell. I'd shaved my head 8 years back and have kept it low for that long, simply because dealing with my actual hair was too tedious and painful.
And so I went freeform - because of Hobie.
For the past three months the only thing I've put in my hair is water and shampoo.
Maybe a little salt water if I wanna tighten up the locs a bit. But nothing else.
My hair is cleaner.
It's completely conditioned.
The curls found their own pattern and loced up without me even needing to part my hair. Like my head knew where each loc was gonna go.
Honestly, I barely worry about it anymore. In fact, if I don't touch my hair every other day or so, just lightly touching each loc end - the locs would combine more, getting thicker, and then I'd REALLY have hair like Hobies.
And my hair looks a fucking mess.
That's the hardest part now - not dealing with my hair. Dealing with people who see my hair.
I've learned idea that locs are inherently more dirty or harder to clean is actually the opposite of reality.
Detangled hair is absolutely harder to clean and maintain.
The reason detangled hair takes so long to manage is because you strip the oils off the scalp because it can't get down the strands of hair. Since every strand is separated, the oil just sticks to the scalp. So you wash it out.
But now that you've got no oil your hair and scalp is dry so now you need conditioner. But conditioner isn't enough. You need oil. But oil can cause buildup too so maybe use pink gel. But pink gel is too processed so do a hair mask- ETC ETC ETC for forever and ever and ever.
All because we are always, without break, fighting against our hairs natural instinct to loc.
Why? Because it looks weird. Because we are so used to constantly treating and cleaning and managing our hair that a lot of us genuinely believe that if we were to stop for even a month our hair would become ratty, smelly, matted messes no matter how much we showered.
At least that's what I believed.
But if we let ourselves and our hair be - in reality, both us and our hair becomes stronger, more healthy, and less stressed.
That's why so many people call it a Locs JOURNEY. Cause it truly is a journey of self-care, and unlearning self-admonishing ideas about our bodies and hair.
We as black people - like everyone on this Earth - have hair genetically evolved to manage itself on a reasonable level.
The amount of labor and thought that black people are required to put into their hair on top of that - even when it's 'NATURAL' - is not reasonable.
That's why there will be people in the natural hair community, with natural hair - who still think freeforms are ugly and nasty because they themselves choose to detangle and condition and the works to their hair. Even people with manicured locs believe this.
Because there is the believe that healthy black hair = lots of black labor. And they value natural hairstyles that require more labor.
Many don't believe that black people can have natural and healthy hair with minimal work - just like every other race.
But it's true. It's just so happens that when it does, it 'looks weird'.
And when it comes to Hobie - it kills me to see this.
To see people consuming Hobies messages of punk and politics, but never of race. His racial solidarity and displays of blackness.
Even us as a black community.
GAH sometimes I feel like he'd hear the stuff some people say about freeforms and be like
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hell, Hobie would hear that shit ALL THE TIME.
I imagine it really really hurts to see a character that represents a part of you often demonized and discredited - only to turn around and see the fans of said character still think what he's representating is nice in theory, but ugly in practice.
Especially if you're say.. A Hobie cosplayer.
Hobie wears his hair that way because it's his hair - it's not a hairstyle - is anything it's the opposite. And it has a right to exist.
That's the reason why Rastafarians wear locs - freeform locs. Not because they're hippies. Because they love the black form and allow their bodies to grow and manifest in the world without unnecessary manipulation from outside forces - including themselves.
Their hair is their hair. And it has the right to exist as much as any other part of their body.
For Hobie and the real-life men and women who have this hair it's a concious social risk that effects almost every aspect of their life from work to romance, friendships, who will sit next you on the bus and who'll avoid the hell outta you for no reason.
And they do it out of love for themselves and the beauty of black hair.
And because of that, they are considered less attractive, less clean, less 'normal'.
To black people with freeform hair I love you. To the black people with hair like Hobies: Your hair isn't ugly. You aren't dirty.
You're resilient and confident as hell and the realest mfers on earth.
If you're considering getting locs or going freeform. Do it. Absolutely do it. If you want proof you can be cute as hell with freeforms check out this YouTuber named DomiBoy.
Tumblr media
He makes videos documenting his locs journey. He has Congos, which are very very similar to freeform. He makes great videos plus he's adorable and funny okay
If you're a black person without locs or freeforms, please - question what your hair would look like if you didn't manipulate it.
Have you ever gone a period in your life where you haven't detangled, conditioned, parted, braided, gelled, permed your hair etc?
What do you think it would look like if you didn't? How do you think people would treat you?
How do you feel about your hair when your roots grow out? Or your braids get loose? Do you know what your hair looks like untouched?
Question what do you think of freeforms? And why do you think that?
No matter who you are, you should ask yourself -
If a guy said he found curly hair ubiquitously ugly, and questioned if curly haired people were clean, wouldn't it be odd and messed up?
Have I heard myself or others refer to 4c locced hair as ugly? Or questioned their hygiene?
Do I think freeform loced black hair is ugly? Would I date someone with this hair? Why or why not?
Start a discussion with yourself.
As someone with 4c hair and starting a loc journey, I feel like this had to be said. Because it's something that affects and influences a lot of us.
There has beauty in Hobie and there is beauty in black hair. We just have to unlearn a lot of things to see it.
Anyway Hobies hair is hot. Freeforms are hot. I love black people. The end

4c hair appreciation post!
I freaking LOVE my hair! The texture, the coils, the kinks, the thickness, the health, the way my hair grows out to try and reach God! I have always had a love hate relationship with my natural hair. I was always taught to hate my nappy hair. But I've always loved my natural hair and just wanted to be accepted with it. I have been made fun of for it and that used to make me really self conscious about wearing it out in public. As of 2024, I love my fro! I love my hair the way it grows out of my scalp! I don't need to gel it up or do my edges. My hair is beautiful as is. It's so wild to me that just existing as a black woman is such a revolutionary act. Wearing my natural hair is a revolutionary statement. But I'm here for it! And if this resonates with you, I urge you to wear your natural hair out for the world to see!

hey, i fluff idea, maybe emmet(cullen) is trying to learn how to do the readers 4c hair, maybe a like a afro bun and he gets really frustrated because he wants to perfect it but each time he tries it’s a little lopsided but the reader explains what he’s doing wrong and then he gets it right so he feels so accomplished
Hair day!
Warning • none
Pairing • Emmett Cullen x Black coded Reader
a/n: ignore the title idk 🤣
Tumblr media
“Ow…ow-OW! You know what wait just wait” you outburst startled him making him quickly let your hair go. You let out a laugh trying not to make him feel so bad. Emmett has seen you do your hair multiple times and he was just so curious on how well you slicked up and brush through it when there’s so much of it. And it’s obviously not the same as his hair so that made his urge even stronger to try and style it.
“Oh baby I’m sorry am I hurting you?” He let out a nervous chuckle “I was trying to do it like you, you make it look so easy.” You smiled at his nervous state.
“It’s ok baby” you looked in the bathroom mirror and let out a snort. “you tried at least” you reached up and pulled your hair out of the lopsided bun. You took a glance at Emmett, he was looking a little sad and frustrated. You turned around and cupped his face in both hands.
“It’s ok stinka, look let me show you ok?” He nodded taking a few step back letting you have some space.
“Ok so you grab a hair tie preferably a big stretchy one so it won’t pop and you also have to wrap it around a few times” you picked up the hair tie stretching it showing him and he nodded understanding.
“Now for the gel and brush, you take a scoop of gel rub it in your hands and smooth up the sides, front and back of my hair so no curls are left out” after demonstrating that you wipe the residue from the gel off your hands and then grabbed the brush.
“Now you just brush it straight up and…voila!” You exclaimed showing him you perfect bun. “You can be extra and add baby hair but that lesson is for another day.”
“Ok ok I think I got it now” you giggled at his determination. “Ok give it a try” you took your bun down “also you don’t have to add anymore gel” he nodded getting the brush and going to work.
Five minutes later and a few mistakes he finally did it. “Good job baby!” You cheered giving him a hug.
“I did good?”
“Yes! Baby you did good!” He smiled feeling proud of himself.
“Now what did you say about edges?” He asked looking confused as ever.
“…oh lord.”

Welp,
I finally figured out a cute, effective, and minimal tension way to wear my clip ins.
I wish I had figured this out 3 weeks ago before the semester started!!!!
Ugh. Its always awkward debuting a new style when ppl are already used to the way you present yourself. Never mind the fact that I'm going to a PWI...but honestly no body cares about my hair more than me, so I gotta chill on that self conscious shit. As long as I think I look good that should be all that matters.
The clips ins I currently have are very voluminous and textured, so much so I can pull together a style with just 3 tracks, a headband, and a ponytail holder. I ordered some new ones that I think will be more what I'm looking for.
My real hair is currently very short (about 2 inches) and texturized. I've been wearing my hair slicked back with gel while I wear a baseball cap or head wrap outside. That's fine for certain occasions, but I don't want to wear a hat or wrap all the time.
I will continue to slick my hair back with gel, but now with the clip-ins I will be able to wear a low ponytail or bun style while I grow out my hair. It gives me a more youthful appearance than the short cut/slick back look. Clip-ins also allow for instant access to my scalp and hair to maintain regular washing and conditioning.
As long as my hair doesn't fall out, I'm due to texturize my new growth in November. (That should be about 12 weeks post texturizer). Hopefully by then I'll have seen some length retention and I can do some other styles, like individual crochet faux locs, or at least keep doing what's working.
The 4c corkscrew is what I currently own. I would wear that more around town vs campus.
The 4a and 4c coily are the ones I ordered.

I’m saving my avocado peels  I think I can dehydrate them and grind them up and add them to the coffee grounds for my plants.
I don’t drink coffee, but My Folks do. I may need to exchange this bikini top for one that fits these titties better.  Then again, I maaaay be able to make this top work. Management sent an email today saying the pool is open and I’ve been here for THIRTEEN years and I just can’t make myself get in that human soup. The last thing I need is another hair product, but I bought this Curldaze Creamy Curl Styler to try because the idea of curl definition in a cream, not a wet ass gel, appealed to me. I have soooo many hair products and I’m determined to use them all, but I am, dare I say, impressed by Curldaze? We’ll see what it look like when it’s dry, and they have a gel, too, but I can’t buy nothing else til I finish some of this shit I done already bought.  I am not one of them natural hair girls that will use 3 and 4 products after a wash.  I like ONE product, two at the very most, and this ONE product got me defined and moisturized and it’s not wet, and since it’s not wet, it won’t dry into flakes. Ion’t wanna speak too soon but I think I like it and I’m already looking for an empty container to put some in for my trip to SD, cause I’ma need to be defined for the pics w/ my babies. I resent that 4C hair needs to be “defined curls” to get some respect and that’s DIRECTLY from the pedestaling of biracial girls in the natural hair community. Need to try on a couple dresses and get a look at how far I gotta go.  The dress I wore to Muffin’s funeral used to look so good on me and now I look like a busted can of biscuits in it.

Natural hair braid styles
Tumblr media
Use an elastic band at the end to keep the braids from unraveling. Add in some Flaxseed Gel Edge Control to really define those parts and either use cornrows or flat twists (flat twists are just cornrows but with two-strand twists instead of the three-strand braid) to braid the hair to the crown of the head. You can opt for all braids in the front or try braids in the front and back. Now that her hair is clean, detangled, and ready to style, start by parting the hair. Step 2: Hydrating Ice Cream™ Treatment Deep Conditioner Our AvoKiwi 4C 4-Step Recipe comes with the following products made specially to style and care for 4C type hair: If your little girl has 4C hair this hairstyle is the perfect way to protect their hair but still leave some out to show off to the world! If you need a little extra help maintaining your little one’s 4C hair, then look no further! We have a simple four step recipe for all my 4C girls everywhere. It doesn’t matter what natural hair type you are, the braided updo will come out looking perfect for all. This one is an absolute favorite for me! I do this simple hairstyle on my cousins’ hair all the time and sometimes will even do it for myself. That will give your little one the extra style they need to really stand out and shine like the bright star they are. To top of the hairstyle add in some clamps, shells, or beads. Add another elastic band to the end and repeat until all six are finished. Start by adding a small elastic band at the root of the head, then braid the hair using three strands. Make sure each section is fully detangled, then add in some twisting paste. To keep it super simple, part the hair into six sections. This twisting paste will help the hairstyle look cleaner without that crunchy feeling that most products have. To replicate this style make sure you have your Hydrating Twisting Paste on hand. This faux locs style is cute and easy to replicate and they last the test of time. It also will allow for less hair breakage. With our special detangling brush, you’ll be able to brush through any hair type without ruining their natural curl pattern. The Hydrating Leave-In Conditioner paired with our Detangling Brush is the perfect way to get your little girl’s hair soft and ready to detangle. Step 3: Hydrating Ice Cream™ Treatment Deep Conditionerīe sure to detangle the hair thoroughly before starting. In our AvoKiwi Protective Styling 6-Step Recipe you can find the following products to your little girl’s hair smelling fresh and prepped for braiding: We already have all of the products and steps you need listed out, all you have to do is follow them. Some of these styles are a little harder than others but all can be achieved without going to the hair salon.Īs always, you are going to want to start out with clean hair and our AvoKiwi Protective Styling 6-Step Recipe is the perfect and easiest way to get there. It can be easy to recycle the same few styles for a little girls’ natural hair but we at NaturAll Club encourage you to change it up! If you don’t have any new styles in your back pocket ready to try out, here are our top five braided styles for little girls and their natural hair: Braids will help protect their natural hair and stretch out the hair to create more length and get longer hair faster. Braiding natural hair is what is easiest and best for a little girl.

MHA GIRLS AND THEIR HAIR: BLK EDITION!
found this in the drafts so here you go since y’all liked the jjk one so much
Tumblr media
MOMO YAYOROZU // SILK PRESS
Tumblr media
hair type – 4b/4c
i’m jealous of her, ngl. her hair is so healthy. bounces when she walks.
she hates dealing with her hair in it’s natural state, so she presses it out.
if it weren’t for her pressing it out, nobody would know that her hair is almost waist length bc her shrinkage is something serious.
she uses expensive products bc she can afford it. the scent is strong but it smells so good, like moroccan oil.
KYOKA JIROU // FINGERWAVES
Tumblr media
hair type – 3a/3b
okay, i know some of y’all reading this like “lumi what the fuck” but HEAR ME OUT 😭
she used to wear relaxers when she was younger but after the natural movement started (and her having a mental crisis) she decided to do the big chop and she hasn’t looked back since.
she does the waves herself, and absolutely LOVES the freedom of not having to worry about her hair afterwards.
momo complimented her hair on the first day of school and she almost died on the spot.
OCHAKO URARAKA // WASH ‘N GO
Tumblr media
hair type – 4b
the lazy natural.
she doesn’t have a lot of money to buy the special products so she just uses shampoo, conditioner, cream and gel and calls it a day. it’s good enough and it seems to me working for her.
fucking hates wash day.
sometimes has a mental breakdown bc her hair won’t cooperate.
her arms are toned as hell and it’s not because of her internship with gunhead, it’s combing those knots out.
wants to be like jirou and cut her hair everyday.
MINA ASHIDO // W/E SHE’S FEELING ATM
Tumblr media
hair type – 4a/4b/4c
y’all already know.
it changes from day to day tbh.most days she’ll wear her hair in it’s natural curly state, but near wash days she’ll pull it up into a puff or something. other days when she’s feeling snazzy she’ll straighten it.
year 1’s hair stylist.
there’s no beauty supply store bc mina’s dorm is the beauty supply store
she has at least two storage boxes filled with hair products and supplies, including hair.
speaking of which, one day she got braids and all might said “young ashido, loving the hair! did you hair grow over night?!” and she almost rolled her eyes.
MEI HATSUME // BUTTERFLY LOCS
Tumblr media
hair type – 3c/4a
i don’t have too much to say about this one, it just makes sense.
she’s too preoccupied with making support items anyways so it makes sense for her to wear protective styles.

can i request bakugo with a black (or poc) s/o who has natural 4c hair and his reaction to it, since the reader usually wears her hair in braids. thank you :))
Hey! Thanks for requesting! 💕😊Hope you like it!
“Woah, it’s so fluffy!” - Bakugou
Tumblr media
(also I added the gif to show what 4c hair can look like, for people who may not know)
Warnings: light swearing (because of boom boom boy), Mineta acting outta pocket (bc i need someone to do it, and it just fit for him), kinda soft Bakugou
Tumblr media
The sun shone through the spaces in the curtains that weren’t quite covered, causing the room to light up with a dim glow. You got up, stretching before you opened the curtains fully brightening the room in an instant. Walking into your bathroom, you pulled the orange and black silk-lined bonnet off of your head, setting it to the side of the sink as you looked at what you would have to do to your hair.
You usually wore your tightly coiled curls in a braided style, the most recent being poetic justice braids, but you had taken them out since you had just gone through wash day, too tired to think about doing another braided style, you had let your curls be free.
You put the UA uniform on, adding a little more leave-in conditioner and styling gel to your hair before you used ECO gel to get your edges laid; smiling in the mirror when you liked the way it came out. You honestly didn’t care what anyone had to say about your appearance, you liked it and Bakugou had always told you that extras’ opinions didn’t matter. But that didn’t mean you weren’t nervous about what your ash blonde boyfriend would say. He had never actually seen you wear your hair like this, but he liked every single braided hairstyle you had done, and though he didn’t say it outright, he WOULD NOT stop showing you off and telling everyone that you were his girl.
You put your simple everyday makeup on and walked out of the dorm, grabbing your books as you headed to the Class 1-A classroom. You had planned to get there early, a habit you had picked up from the explosive blonde.
When you opened the oversized door, the room was pretty empty except for the Bakusquad that sat around Bakugou’s desk. You closed the door behind you, getting the group’s attention as Mina and Jiro’s eyes widened slightly, smiles on their faces.
“Woah (y/n)! Your hair is so pretty!” Mina exclaimed as you smiled, taking your seat next to your boyfriend, his arm instantly going around your shoulders. He wasn’t big on PDA like kissing and all that, but he would always touch you somehow, whether that be an arm around your shoulders or holding your hand.
“Thanks Mina.” You replied, flashing a smile at her.
“Why don’t you wear it like that more?” Jiro questioned. “It fits your face.”
“Yeah! It’s super cool (y/n).” Kaminari said as Sero nodded, looking at you intently.
“Yeah, it’s super manly.” Kirishima added, giving a nod as his sharp teeth shined when he smiled.
“It’s usually easier to manage when I wear it in braids.” You shrugged, pushing some of your coils back over your shoulder. A warm feeling filled you at your friends’ positive reactions, expecting someone to say something out of pocket about your hair. You looked over to see your boyfriend’s reaction, turning to find that he was already looking at you. “I just didn’t feel like doing it, yet.”
“It’s nice, Dumbass.” He mumbled as you softly smiled at him as the conversation turned to you explaining what wash day was to Sero, Kaminari, and Kirishima as Jiro and Mina listened sitting next to you.
The rest of the class came through the door a moment later, the 3 foot tall boy’s eyes widening as they landed on you. “Woah! It’s so fluffy!” He said excitedly as he went to touch your hair, without asking you first.
You were about to react, until the ash blonde boy moved his arm from around you, quickly grabbing Mineta’s outstretched arm, holding him up above the floor, his other hand pointed at Mineta’s face. DON’T.” Bakugou threatened, letting a small scale explosion hit the boy before he dropped him as everyone else looked on, surprised that Mineta had even tried that.
Bakugou took his seat beside you again, placing his arm around you and pulling you towards him again. “You should wear it like that more.” Came his simple reply, quiet enough where no one except the two of you heard him. You looked up at him, dark eyes shining as you searched his face.
“Really?”
“Why would I say it if I didn’t mean it?” He questioned, arching an eyebrow at you with a frown. You chuckled lightly, causing Bakugou to narrow his eyes at you. “That’s why you’re a fucking dumbass.”
“Yeah, but I’m your dumbass.” You pushed his head playfully.
“Tch, whatever.” He grumbled, but you didn’t miss the tiniest smile on his lips as he rolled his eyes at you.

Hii I'm black and tired of not seeing any representation is there any way you could have the boys help the reader with a wash day? And she has 4c hair ?🤗
absolutely! There’s not enough representation in fanfics and I’m definitely guilty of doing this myself. Also thank you for the resources you gave me before I wrote this, they helped a lot. ((However, if I get anything wrong please just message me so I can correct it))
Tumblr media
Leo
Leo is all about helping you wash your hair, to him there’s something very intimate and romantic about that
“ok, just hop in the shower”
“Baby...It’s not that simple..”
you have to explain to him that your hairs been in a gelled back ponytail for the last few days and that means you need a rice water treatment to soften your roots and the gel
he’s very confused by why specifically it needs to be rice water
to be fair, he has no hair, so why would he know that rice water has a lot of protein and is good for hair
you may also make a lot of bald jokes as you go through this process
which he graciously laughs at as you wash each sectioned part of your hair
he’s very good at being gentle as he rubs the shampoo in
he is absolutely useless as finger combing through your hair because his fingers are just too damn big so you end up giving him a wide toothed comb to do it instead
his fave part is when you have to deep condition and wear a cap because that way he can suggest you both put on face masks for the 30-40 minutes that takes to sink in
Tumblr media
Raph
Raph is down to wash your hair with you
since he doesn’t have any, he’s fascinated by hair in general
he’s actually really good at sectioning your hair, he is a secret perfectionist after all
he loves all the tips you give him throughout
like not focusing on the ends of the hair with shampoo or they’ll get too dry
and he gives you a nice little head massage while he does it
also while your deep conditioning treatment is in he helps you use a little heat to get the moisturiser to penetrate the hair a little better
He loves using oils on your hair
you use almond oil and he says it smells like marzipan and loves that for you
telling you that you smell good enough to eat
he sits on the floor by the mirror to watch you style your hair afterwards
you even teach him how to flat twist your hair
he is...not very good at it which drives him crazy
Tumblr media
Mikey
Mikey wasn’t even aware that hair needed to be washed
“But, it’s not like hair gets sweaty?”
you have to remind him that scalps do and so the hair does need to be washed
unfortunately his attention span isn’t the best for helping you with the long process that is washing your hair so he mainly stays to entertain you and bring you snacks while you section everything out and wash it
he does, however, desperately want to help you comb out your hair while it’s being conditioned
he adores how long the curls stretch out to be before bouncing back
it becomes like a fun game to him
he even lets you borrow one of his t-shirts to dry your hair a little
after you explain that the microfibers in s-shirts are better for curls
he just watches and admires as you oil and style your hair
always supportive and telling you what a great job your doing
he’s your number 1 cheerleader, honestly.
Tumblr media
Donnie
So Donnie knows everything
....apart from hair care
because why would he need to?
but when you ask him to help you wash your hair, he does like 5 hours of research
and special order in some sulphate and paraben free, cruelty free, organic shampoo and conditioner that he thinks will be really good for your hair’s strength and growth
also some organic coconut oil to put in your hair before you wash it
he goes all out basically
watches patiently as you section out your hair and helps you apply said shampoo and conditioner
you take the suds it gives off and put them on his hair to make it look like he has sticky up white, bubbly hair
you both get a kick out of that
his favourite part is helping you put on leave in conditioner and oils on slightly damp hair
he just likes the fragrance they have and how carefully you put them on
actually decent at styling your hair with you
years and years of delicate mechanics has made him a pretty good hairdresser

“Pretty Girl Rules” Hair Edition <3
* Specifically black girl edition😉 *
So today I was asked, “What hairstyles would make a girl look more soft and dollish?”
When it comes to hair your hair texture is a very very important element. The hairstyle one girl might do will not look the same if your hair texture is completely different from hers. And I think a lot of girls sometimes get really confused with that and then get sad that their hair didn't turn out like their reference picture.
I personally have 3C hair so it's really easy for me to do hairstyles! So I'll give you guys the hairstyles that I always do. And I'll also include some for my 4C girls as well ♡
Hairstyles for 3A+ girls
-Wear your hair out! I've been wearing my hair out for the past two and a half years lol. I recently cut my hair and I just got tired of having to detangle it every couple of days so I've been wearing buns lately. But wearing your natural hair out is always such a cute look that is feminine and classy! You can never go wrong with this one!
- Half up half down
The half up half down is so cute. I only wear it once in a while because it's kind of hard to do for me. But when I do, do it I always look so good! This hairstyle is very suitable for long and short hair girls.
*My 4C range hair girls can do this style too. But please don't beat yourself up because it won't look the same as someone with a 3a+ hair type*
-Buns!
Any kind of bun will always look good and clean. Low or high. Middle part or side part. If you do swoop that's even cuter! Buns are also the quickest to do. If you find yourself running late all the time a bun should always be your go to!
Hairstyles for 4C girls
-Puffs/Pineapple
If you're a 4C girl pleaseeee wear a pineapple! Every time I see a 4C girl wearing this style I get so excited because it's so cute! *Reference picture listed*
Tumblr media
-Twist outs
This style is universally loved. Most people say it's easy to do but personally when I tried a twist out it was very hard and just didn't work out for me lol. But everyone's hair is different!
Products I use!
-Miss Jessie's pillow soft curls
Tumblr media
This stuff is the actual GOAT! The whole line of Miss Jessie's is super good but I find the pillow soft curls to definitely be the best one. It keeps my hair really soft and frizz-free! For a long time I struggled with frizz and finding products that would keep it tamed. Which is why I didn't wear my hair out for a while! ☹️ but Miss Jessie's literally saved my life.
-Mixed Chicks leave-in conditioner
Tumblr media
The best leave in conditioner ever. When you put it on your hands so you can put it in your hair it does feel very iky. You do not have to constantly reapply this product into your hair everyday. I always put the same on right after I wash my hair. And then once I have to redo my hair a couple days after I'll put it in again but no more after that. Not until I wash my hair again. It goes a long way and does stay in your hair.
-Green Eco Styler gel
Tumblr media
I'm pretty sure we all know about this gel. I tried a lot of gel over the years but I find Eco styler ( specifically the olive oil one) to be the best. It doesn't flake up quickly. It's really good for molding your edges and even better for slicking down the rest of your hair. But sadly this isn't the only product that keeps my edges down. If I want my edges to stay the entire day I will not only use Eco, I follow up with another product *listed below*
-Edge booster styling gel
Tumblr media
This is definitely a Holy Grail product. The Edge booster line also has an edge control that I have used before. I didn't like it so much because it gave me lots of flakes and also made my hair feel really stiff and hard after a while. But I will say the edge control definitely does make your edges stay all day even if you sweat your edges out!
Now for the gel, it's a really strong product (for a gel). I’ve definitely never used a hair gel as strong as this one. I only apply this product to my edges because when I tell you it makes your edges STAY, it makes them STAY. So I don't like to apply this all throughout my hair. You could do that, but then you would have to wash your hair more often than needed be.
After I use the Eco gel I follow up with this gel. This is the gel that really makes my edges stay. I just use Eco to mold by edges.
I hope this really helps someone especially as a black girl 🥺, because I know for a while that I struggled finding products that actually worked with my hair. This is also my first time giving tips (hehe). So let me know what you guys think!
My series is called “Pretty Girl Rules”
I'm definitely the girl you can always come to whenever you need Pretty Girl Tips. I would love if you guys gave me some more ideas for the series in my ask! Mwuah! ♡

A lot of popular black hairstyle videos still be trying to make their hair loose and flat, and that don’t sit right with me at all. I’ve constantly seen videos of black people using a shit ton of gel on their hair, straightening their hair and bragging about how “silky and clean” it looks, and using wigs that are either straight, or extremely loose curls. Not to mention complaining about shrinkage like it’s some kind of curse.
Not once have I seen a video of a black person just doing their hair without adding in so much stuff to make it look presentable to white society, nor have I seen a black person putting on a wig that’s a 4c afro…
Every single video has to be laying edges, globs of fucking gel, or a wig that looks wet and wavy.
It’s giving texturism, it’s giving “I hate afro hair”, it’s giving “I don’t want to look too black”.

Harry Wants to Braid Y/N’s Hair
Tumblr media
Warnings: no warnings just fluff :)
Word Count: 577
A/N: Y/n is a dark skinned african american with 4c hair, take that as you will, no hate please, thank you, -Salty
-
-
It's the middle of July and it's hot.
Y/N has dark coily hair, and she's standing in the bathroom braiding it. She's got her moisturizers, hair gel, and every hair thing she's got spread across the sink countertop,
Up, under, over, under.
She’s on her 4th braid and she's already annoyed doing it. Quarantine is slowly lifting and hair salons are slowly opening back up, but Harry being the over protective boyfriend he is doesn't want her that close to anyone with them with the chances of being them sick. He knows she's got asthma so getting ‘rona would not be good for her.
“Harry!” She calls for him and he jumps up to see her braiding her hair in front of the mirror.
“Yes?” He replies, leaning in the doorway looking at her.
“Can you grab that bottle please?” she asks him as she nods her head at the bottle with a strand of hair in her mouth. He nods as he walks to grab it and opens it and places it in front of her on the counter and smiles at her.
“Thanks darling.” She says smiling at him.
Up, under, over, under.
Harry stands leaning in the doorway watching her braiding her hair tight to her head while she does another few braids.
“Can-can I try? braiding your hair?” He asks her suddenly, breaking the silence. It catches her off guard slightly and she looks over to him,
“Do you know how?” she returns the question.
“Well a little bit i used to braid Gemma’s hair sometimes but your braids are a different style Gemma’s were looser an-” she cuts him off
“I’m cornrowing, mine are tight to my head and i'll assume you french braided her hair but watch and you can do the next one, yeah?” he nods in agreement and continues to watch her
“Up, under, over, under. Up, under, over, under.” He repeats to himself watching her do it.
She sections off a row for him to braid back and ties the extra so he doesn't mix it in and sits down on the ledge of the bathtub so he can stand over her to see what he's doing.
He splits the section into three, “Up, under, over, under” He repeats to himself over and over until he gets to the end. Y/N stands up and walks over too the mirror and looks at it and smiles, she knows it's not the best but it'll do, she turns to look at him and he looks so proud of himself, she looks and admires him and the way he looks so proud that he braided her hair. She turns around and hugs him.
“Y’learn something new everyday, and see now, when we have kids you'll be able to braid their hair too yeah?” She says looking up at him with her arms still wrapped around his waist .
“Yeah maybe,” he says while looking back down at her smiling.
“Right, do you wanna do the rest or do you want me to finish them?” She asks him letting him go.
“N-no it’s okay, I don’t wanna ruin your vibe,” he says as he chuckles nervously.
She just nods and snickers back at him, returning to braiding her own hair. He stands in the doorway and admires her and her talent for braiding.
“So, kids huh?” he says to her, smirking a little.
She snickers at him “Maybe one day doll.”

I would like to add to what that anon said if that's okay? Because I agree. 4c hair is specific to black women, you can find 3c hair in women of all races but 4c hair is only found in black women. Which is why I take it as disrespect when people try to make 4c women feel they need to add extra product to make it look "better" because they're literally feeding the narrative that black can never be beautiful. 4c hair is the least promoted, the least accepted and the least admired. (1/2)
This is also why ppl claiming to have 4c hair, & texture 4 hair generally, is an offensive & problematic bandwagon. Could you imagine if on the flip side Black Ppl were out here claiming 1a hair? Or 2b? 3a? 🤨 Ppl of all races would gun for that shit; jump to create opportunities to demean, deny, invalidate & disrespect us even worse. Texture 4 hair is unique to Blackness & no other race. Not that that means all Monoracially Black Ppl have texture 4 or 4c hair, but regardless, it is a trait that belongs to Black Culture. Ppl who are out here claiming to have hair like us while in the same breath trying to convince us that our hair is only or more socially acceptable when its "defined", drenched in gel, water, moisturizers — or watered down w non black genetics — are fake as hell & singlehandedly destroyed the nhc. I'm not entirely sure 3c hair can be found in all races either, but for sure texture 4 hair is ours. Its just crazy cus Black hair & features have always, literally ALWAYS been harshly violently discriminated against. & nowadays everybody clouting; everybody texture 4a or 4b or 4c now. like wow. No you are not at all lol.

Your hair is so gorgeous! How do you keep it healthy?
I leave it alone. 😂 No really. I leave it in protective twists and braids 90% or more of the time, as kinky hair is fragile and prone to breakage with daily handling. And i don’t use heat— i’ve only had my hair pressed once, by a professional who is very well researched. If I ever get it again, I’m only going back to a professional, and only doing it once or twice a year. I recommend checking out @ifshesopleases on IG as our hair and regimens are quite similar, and she has videos!
How I twist/protective style: I do this every couple weeks with a spray bottle of water and unrefined coconut oil (you should use whatever moisturizer and oil works for you), and after every shampoo/conditioning:
I take half of my hair and within that, I section off 2 to 3 parts. I start with one section and spray generously with warm water and add moisturizer and oil until it’s soft and workable, and then begin to detangle it from root to tip with a detangling brush. (Some people finger detangle but I don’t like it) I always handle my hair extremely gently. If it’s very tangled, I may split that section so that it’s smaller to work with.
After I am done, I always coil the ends around my finger and let go to “lock” them, although some people suggest wrapping them around a small perm or Flexi rod— either way it helps your ends to not create a nasty little knot party. I twist or braid the remaining sections until the entire half of my head is complete.
I take those three sections of twists/braids and treat them as strands to create one large braid or twist. I then repeat the process for the other half of my head. I can leave the two braids down if I want to wear them like that, but I usually pin them to my head so that they flatten overnight and I can fit the hair under wigs.
these days, I leave out a bit of my bangs in the front, which I wear duding the day and retwist for going to sleep. The whole head is detangled and I keep it like that for a few weeks. I take them down to redo them when they get very dry/fuzzy or to wash and redo them, or to style my hair with sets and/or wear down in a twist out.
It is suggested that you remoisturizing your ends every few days, and I try to do that but most of the time I forget. However my hair has still showing immense growth over the last however many years despite not being moisturized daily. This is because of how gently I treat it and low manipulation!
I’ve also been trying to switch up how I part it for a few weeks at a time.
I stretch my hair by taking it down while handling gently with oil on the hands of course, and then re-twisting in one or two large braids/twists, but not using water/moisturizer or brushing out. and I combine those sections from before to make the twists.
So whereas before, I might have three small twists making a braid, this time I actually just have three sections of twisted hair making the large braid, if that makes sense. Over the course of a night or two, the hair will be stretched out.
Whenever my hair is stretched from a set or a couple nights of stretching my twists, if I wear it out for a day, I ALWAYS put it back in a large braid or two, or pineapple it before sleeping. I never sleep with my hair loose, it leads to excess tangles! I sleep in a satin hair cap or scarf.
Products: Aside from water itself, I use about 6 products in total on my hair: coconut oil, setting lotion, Curls shampoo and conditioner, or leave-in, and on rare occasion a gel for edges if I ever feel like I want them laid. My hair is high density, the strands themselves are medium to fine thickness and I believe it’s medium porosity, with the textures on my scalp ranging from 3c to 4c, mostly being 4a and 4b. Up until a silk press from a trained professional in November 2021, I never used heat on my current hair— I recommend a VERY good deep conditioner if you do it more often.
That’s it! Just patience and leaving it alone most of the time. I used to live in a roller set protective style which I still think is a good option for some, but my hair is simply too long/dense now and would have quite a time drying. I live in the Midwest in a climate that seems to treat my hair well, and the water treatment in Chicago is decent enough for washing— I’ve heard that in some environments it’s very hard to get drier textures to thrive sadly.
