Black gun owners are helping to shape the gun debate in Massachusetts, with Boston-area legislators expressing surprise and maybe a little frustration over the fact that many of their constituents are telling them to back down from their efforts to add more restrictions on the right to keep and bear arms. 

Bostonians, who have long faced tough hurdles to secure gun licenses compared to suburban peers, are pressing state lawmakers to ease those restrictions as new gun reform legislation advances on Beacon Hill this season. And, increasingly, the calls on behalf of expanding Second Amendment rights are coming from men and women of color who live in Dorchester and Mattapan. State Rep. Russell Holmes, who represents parts of both neighborhoods, says he is paying attention to their calls. “It’s a legal right they are asking for and I need to open my eyes to the fact that folks in my community feel their Second Amendment rights are being infringed upon,” said Holmes, who said he’s approached everywhere – even at church – about expanding gun rights. His colleague in the Fifth Suffolk district, Rep. Chris Worrell, said he’s been fielding similar calls from constituents in other parts of Dorchester and Roxbury that he represents. “Am I a gun person? No,” said Worrell. “I’m not a gun guy and don’t own a gun but there are a lot of people here in the neighborhood who want to exercise their Second Amendment rights and obtain a license and have not been able to.”

On today's Bearing Arms Cam & Co, newly-elected GOP committeewoman Dr. Elizabeth Hinds-Ferrick and Massachusetts firearms instructor Nolan Howard declared that it's getting harder for Democrats to ignore the pro-2A sentiment coming from a growing number of their constituents.

"Everyone's seeing what's going on around them. We've got immigrants coming in, and they're taking care of them instead of us, and a lot of people are feeling a little uneasy and thinking it's time to go get their license," Howard revealed, adding that he does see something of a generation split on the issue. 

"A lot of the older generation doesn't like it, including in my family, but I forced my sister to make my class. I told her 'hey, just get the license. You don't even need to get a gun right now, just get a license. God forbid something happens, you won't have to wait. You can just go to an FFL, wait for the background check, and there you go." 

Dr. Hinds-Ferrick is among the growing number of Bostonians who are applying for her LTC, which is required to both possess a gun in the home and carry in public. 

"My oldest son signed up the whole family," she shared. "We all went to the course on a Sunday. It's time for all of us to be responsible gun owners and get our license so we can protect ourselves and exercise our Second Amendment rights." 

 Hinds-Ferrick is hoping to use the Second Amendment as a means of Republican outreach to people of color, but both she and Nolan said they'd be thrilled to see Democrats embrace the right to keep and bear arms. They just don't see it happening anytime soon. 

"If you look at what's happening in Congress and around the country," Hinds-Ferrick said, "they're blaming the gun and not the person that is using the gun. The gun is an inanimate object, but they're trying to change the law to away our Second Amendment rights." 

Meanwhile, Hinds-Ferrick, Howard, and other Second Amendment supporters are trying to change the political environment in Massachusetts, and thanks to their efforts, Democrats are starting to feel the heat from their constituents. 

For lawmakers like Holmes, the incoming calls are ones he cannot ignore. “It’s an unusual request for me,” Holmes admits. “I’m saying, ‘When did this happen in the Black community because I have gun violence all up and down Blue Hill Avenue in my district.’ But these are friends and regular, real people, not crazy gun enthusiasts but real people that I know who say this is something they want to do…I’m not happy about it but I have to open my eyes to it.”

It remains to be seen if Holmes and other Democratic lawmakers will actually listen to what their constituents are saying. A conference committee is still working behind closed doors to craft a compromise gun control bill, and we have no idea when they'll have a draft that will be released to the public or what the bill will look like when it finally emerges from the committee room.

Mark Cardigan: "An actor whose swashbuckler films, judging by the swordfight clip we see, are the in-universe equivalent of Errol Flynn's films--but while kind of a dick at times Mark is FAR more likeable than Flynn. 🔮 Ok, so let's try it:

I - Transformation:

1a - What areas of my life can I transform and let go of during this powerful cosmic event?

Ten of Cups: On the surface, I have what many would consider a good love life. A husband that loves me, and the presence of my family around me. However, I'm not happy. I see my husband more like a friend and not like a spouse.

I'm not physically attracted to him, and for complex reasons, my entire life depended on him for a long time, and now I feel I don't have a life of my own. I live his life as a coadjuvant.

So, I need to let go of the comfort of having a supportive husband taking care of me to transform my life and live it.

1b- What limiting beliefs or fears will I release to reach my highest potential?

Seven of Wands Reversed: Deep in my mind, I'm constantly alert and ready to defend myself from mean others. I developed this trait long ago when I was a bullied pre-teen, scared continuously of homophobes.

This fear of socializing, because I'm gay has no reason to be anymore. I'm comfortable expressing my feminity as a cis man, and I shouldn't care about whoever has a problem with that.

So, when it comes to steps I need to take to improve on that, being aware of this trait I have is an important one.

Death: I must let go of my old self and let the new me be born. This is a complex process that will strengthen my intuition because that's the only guide I have.

Therefore coming out of this process will be a determinant step to trusting my instincts and beliefs. I'll develop a more assertive personality and more confidence, so I'll release my self-doubt and "people-pleasing" aspects.

So, I'll be more secure when at odds with those around me. It's all an interconnected process of evolution.

🌚 Solar Eclipse in Aries, I'm ready!

I think the biggest thing that annoys me about the 2Aers is that they want guns for all the wrong reasons. If you look at the second amendment in a historical context, you can see exactly why it exists. We just got done fighting the Revolutionary War. Why? Because Britain, our government at the time, was being tyrannical and using their power to harass and kill Americans. So after we won the war against them, we wanted to ensure that didn’t happen again, so we put into law that everyday citizens should be allowed to have weapons and, if the need arises, form a militia to go against the tyrannical government. And it worked! For the next hundred years or so, anyways. The most notable of these cases is the Civil War. Regardless of whether or not you agree with the Confederates (which I absolutely do not), they believed that the government had too much power and was acting in a tyrannical way, so they fought back. And even though the Union won in the end, as it should, it was pretty even. The North won some, the South won some. Because the federal military wasn’t quite strong enough to overpower them. But that’s no longer the case. The military now has bombs, missiles, tanks, biochemical warfare. All things that are not legal for everyday citizens to possess. Instead, we have guns that can cause a whole lot of damage to fellow citizens, but is no match for what the government can do. They get billions and billions of dollars every year to develop these weapons. And then they give a small selection of these weapons to police departments, who then use those weapons on citizens, many who don’t deserve it. And yet, the majority of these 2A enthusiasts don’t bat an eye to the military or the police using these weapons on innocents. In fact, these people are the same people yelling at people for not respecting soldiers and saying Back the Blue and Blue Lives Matter. They SUPPORT our strong government who has the power to wipe us out if we step out of line, a government many might describe as “tyrannical” (whether you agree or not). Those same people are the ones who attack citizens for using guns against the police who harass and kill them. (Sound familiar?) Instead, their defense of the second amendment is about…self-defense? Not against a tyrannical government, but against each other. A concept that does not appear at all in the constitution they claim to care about so much. The arms that are granted to us under the constitution are not to protect us against shoplifters and lost kids knocking on your door in the middle of the day; they’re to protect us against a tyrannical government, the very one you have spent the last 100 years arming to the teeth with so much firepower that your rifle won’t stand a chance

Hey again! I was curious about a couple things. 1.Is Marcy Autistic in your AU? Cause well, the whole fiasco revolving the is she/is she not autistic in canon is... tiring as a person with Autism, and having my favorite AU incarnation of Marcy be Autistic would be real cool. 2.What are your general thoughts on how canon handled Marcy's arc? Because I'm curious how closely AWIW will follow it. While I get they were really trying to push the whole change message, it seems like they do so in favor of ignoring a lot of Marcy's very real trauma and hurt, and so watching them put her back in a situation she was so clearly terrified of was... uncomfortable. Specifically in regards to returning to her parents. Because like, they kinda brush over the fact that Marcy, as opposed to Anne and Sasha, actually ran away from home, and usually happy, well cared for children don't tend to do that. Plus everything in regards to the indicators of her parents being at best neglectful (her considering being alone with them as still alone, the desire to live in Amphibia, her immediate attachment to Andrias) makes it feel like maybe they didn't fully think through Marcy's story end point while writing her, and just kinda threw in the line of 'can you call our parents' to be like "see? Marcy does want to go back to her parents, so they've definitely been nothing but good people this entire time, despite the fact that they dropped the bombshell of moving on Marcy's childhood best friend's actual birthday". And with you leaning into the whole "Marcy's parents aren't very good", I guess I was just, idk, pretty worried about the potential for Marcy to wind up in the same situation as canon, isolated for ten or so years with no decent adults in her life that we know of.

Hello again! Analysis and spoilers down below

1.Is Marcy Autistic 

So I hate to answer like this cause it sounds like a cop-out, but Maybe?? Marcy's characterization in the AU is partially details I picked up for the show, partly things I inferred from the show, with maybe a few traits from myself to round her out a bit. I am not diagnosed one way or the other. But there have been a number of times I've read or heard autistic people/friends talk about their experience and thought to myself, 'Oh that's relatable'. So I might have written her as such on accident 

As much as I would love to enthusiastically say, 'Yes!' to your question, my deep fear is that I am going to have Marcy do something/somethings that are atypical for an Autistic person to do. Then you and anyone who would take comfort in my confirmation at this moment, would then be disappointed by my inability to follow through down the line.

So I'm sorry that this is a wishy washy answer, but the honest one is this: I did not intend to write her as autistic. If she reads like that, awesome, I have no issues with that reading. I am not confirming for fear of disappointing people later if I am incapable of follow-through.

2a. How do I feel Marcy’s Arc was handled in canon?

I think we’re mostly in agreement here. There’s a lot of baggage from True Colors that the creators just kind of... pretend isn’t there for season 3? I wouldn’t be surprised if executive meddling kept them from really dealing with it. 

The fact that no one brings up Marcy through most of Season 3 is always going to be a thorn in my side. Marcy’s last 3 actions Marcy takes in Season 2 are 

1. Save Sprigs life. Sprig nor Anne ever bring this up again. 

2. Manage to open a portal and save Anne and the Plantars, even though this put a target on her back and led to her being

3. Impaled through the chest. Her last words being a desperate apology for her mistakes

No one ever brings this up after true colors. This is not a moment of grief before they are going on silly adventures on Earth. Note: I like the silly adventures on Earth, I think those are good episodes, but they do absolutely squander the narrative momentum of True Colors.

It could have been Sprig asking in one of their late night chats ‘Hey do you really think Marcy is alright?’ and Anne hesitating for juuuuust a moment before answering‘Yeah, of course dude.’ Just to put that on the actual page. Sasha is stuck in Amphibia but seems to make no effort or plans to try and rescue Marcy on her own, even though she has no idea if Anne could get back. Again a throw away line of ‘I’ve looked into ways to save Marcy, but we just don’t have the resources’ would have been enough to establish that yeah, Sasha was worried about Marcy and they really need to gather allies so we can help her.

I’ve written before about the main thing you asked about vis a vis Marcy’s parents here. So yeah, the little ‘hey, let our parents know we’re good‘ did ring a little hollow for me too. Kind of a cop out. 

2B. Am I going to follow the same path as canon with AWIW?

No. Like usually I don’t super confirm or deny things like this but no. The ending I have sketched out currently is very different from canon, and if there is a grand moral to be learned, its not that change is a natural part of life we need to embrace it. 

I think that is a fine lesson mind you, but canon already did it, and I have my own story to tell.
