Kenji Muto's Twitter Posts: Part 2

Before and while Tristamp was airing, Kenji Muto made some amazing Twitter posts giving us lore and production tidbits along the way. And while I don't speak Japanese (so I'm going to have to use Google Translate for this, so take everything you read here with a grain of salt because it may be skewed by mistranslation), there was some fantastic art and really cool concepts shared, and I want to archive anything Trigun-related. If I miss anything, let me know!) It starts a little slow with stuff we already know, but there are some interesting tidbits! If anyone who knows Japanese wants to correct anything, please feel free! So, my Japanese isn't great, but I wanted to try to clarify something on here that Google Translate isn't capturing, namely from this part: Saying that there are two types of gates and then defining them both as "Power to bring" doesn't make sense in English. Why make a distinction between the two if you're gonna define them the same way? But in the Japanese, it's not quite the same words used for both: "持ってくる力" (motte kuru chikara) vs. "持っていく力" (motte iku chikara. 力 (chikara) just means "power," so we'll set that aside for now since that part is actually consistent across both items. 持って (motte) is also consistent across both items. This means "carrying" or "holding," like you'd hold a bag or a purse or a backpack or something that you're taking around with you. The big difference is between くる (kuru) and いく (iku). These are actually the kana (phonetic) versions of two kanji characters: 来る (kuru) - to come 行く (iku) - to go That provides us with a nice little pair of opposites, and changes our literal definitions as follows: 持ってくる力 (motte kuru chikara) - Power to come carrying 持っていく力 (motte iku chikara) - Power to go carrying So... they're both kinda "power to bring" but it would be more accurate to say one brings and one removes. Or, if you're feeling dramatic, one giveth and one taketh away.

Buddha to his disciples, mini-series (16)

500 pieces of firewood - Never too late

An old man who had become an alcoholic came to see the Buddha in regretting what he did. He feared the consequences of the crimes he had committed. To the old man, the Buddha taught:

“Suppose we take down to the ground 500 carloads of firewood pulled by white elephants, how many carloads of fire would it take to burn all of this?” the Buddha asked.

“How many cars' worth of fire? No, just a little bit, a pea-sized fire is enough,” the oldman replied.

"Yes, that's right. Even if your accumulated sins are equivalent to 500 carloads, they will disappear if you confess," replied the Buddha.

Avadana 40

Note: Avadāna is one of the twelve-part sutra, a classification of Buddhist scriptures, which relates the good deeds of past lives to the events of their later lives. It mainly refers to the stories of the present and past (previous) lives of the Buddha's disciples, which explain the truth of good causes and effects and bad causes and effects. Avadāna is basically literature developed in tribal Buddhism, which flourished in the post-A.D. centuries from northern to north-western India.

However, there is some confusion with Jātaka (Ref), as many of the stories are on previous lives of Buddha, although they are called Avadāna. As the cult developed over time, it became mixed with neighbouring dialects and Sanskrit, and it is thought that a mixed Buddhist Sanskrit was formed that escaped regionalism. 酒浸りになっていた老人が、自己を反省して釈迦に会いにやって来た。彼は、これまでに自分が犯した罪業の報いを恐れていた。そんな老人に向かって、釈迦は次のように教えた:

「かりに白象の引く五百台の車いっぱいに積んだ薪を地面に降ろして、これを全部燃やすには、車何台分の火が必要か？」と問う釈迦。

「車何台分の火ですって？いいえ、ほんのちょっぴり、豆粒ほどの火で十分です」と答える老人。

「そうだ。あなたの重ねた罪が、たとえ車五百台分であったとしても、懺悔をすれば消えるのだ」と釈迦は答えた。

衆経撰雑譬喩 (ｱｳﾞｧﾀﾞｰﾅ) 40

注: アヴァダーナとは、仏典経典の分類である十二部経のひとつで、前世の善行を後世の出来事に結びつける仏教文献の一種。主に仏弟子の現世と過去（前世）の物語を指し、善因善果と悪因悪果の真理を説く。アヴァダーナは基本的に、紀元後数世紀にインド北部から北西部にかけて栄えた部派仏教で発達した文学である。

ただし、アヴァダーナと呼ばれるものの、釈迦の前世に関する話が多いため、ジャータカ（参照）と混同されることもある。仏教教団が発達するにつれて、近隣の方言やサンスクリット語と混じり合い、地域性を免れた混成仏教サンスクリット語が形成されたと考えられている。そのため、これらの仏典の詳細や経緯は明らかにされていない。

I thought that Mr. Hanamori's expression of ``dependence and attachment'' on the official website was accurate. Shonen Nai is the character that took the most time to formulate his behavioral principles. The mysterious patterns that appear on the clothes are also designed by Koji Tajima. For some reason, most of the official concept art released is from the boyhood version. In the original manga, Nai plays an organ-like or piano-like instrument. How do you feel when you play, and who do you have in mind when you play? Come to think of it, when will that concept art be released? When will it be lifted? #TRIGUN

A three-dimensional model of the mothership made for the performance. It's exquisitely twisted and not designed with left and right symmetry, so it's difficult to draw it from three sides. Rem Saverem is the fifth ship. The third ship survived the crash. I come to work on Sunday and am currently working in the sound booth. #TRIGUN

It's finally unveiled. The second poster made with cell-look CG takes more time than it looks. The talented staff, whose names cannot yet be made public, have been working behind the scenes. ダビングも鋭意進行中。この臨場感、音響効果、ミキシング、そして素晴らしい劇伴音楽。映画館の音響環境で聴いてほしいと思っていたら、なんと先行上映会が開催決定。勝俣さん的に言うと「グルーヴ感がたまらない！」って事なんだと思う。音の力、恐るべし。 #TRIGUN

Dubbing is also in progress. The sense of realism, the sound effects, the mixing, and the wonderful accompaniment music. I wanted to listen to it in the acoustic environment of a movie theater, but it was decided that an advance screening would be held. In Katsumata-san's words, I think it means "the feeling of groove is irresistible!" The power of sound is terrifying. #TRIGUN

I'm not good at repeating the same content over and over again, so I try to vary the themes and content from magazine to magazine as much as possible. When viewed from multiple angles, the work appears three-dimensional. We are sure to continue to publish interview articles full of behind-the-scenes information in the future. Lately, I've been overwhelmed by the enthusiasm of the advertising team. People in positions that are different from the field staff and with whom I had no previous contact. It's because of these unsung heroes that my work spreads. When you go out for drinks with them, you can get a feel for their personalities. Group warfare, group work, group art. Before I knew it, I received a TRIGUN STAMPEDE New Year's card that someone had made for me. Stampede simply sits looking at the camera. This photo shows the attitude of the on-site staff as they approach the work with sincerity. 2022 is the last spurt of dubbing (final mix) at the end of the story. #TRIGUN

Captain Chuck Lee is a lovable villain who has achieved an unusual promotion from just a mob to a side character. As I draw the storyboards, the characters start moving on their own. He starts speaking lines that aren't in the scenario, or gets violent. Tomokazu Sugita's mysterious performance shines. #TRIGUN

寄付って難しいよね、という話。自然災害とかが起きて、「寄付しようね」という話から「寄付したことは堂々と言っていい、もっとアピールしてもいい。自分のメリットのためでもいい」とか「偽善だと叩くのはおかしい、偽善であっても実行すべき」みたいな投稿をよく目にするんですが、それはそれで同意しつつ「寄付をすることを公言するデメリット」みたいなのもあるのです。結構「偽善だと叩かれるからだろ」みたいな思い込みの人もいると思うんですが、全然違う悩みもあるよ、というのを書いてみます。特に問題提起をしたいわけでも、議論を活発化させたいわけでもなく「情報の共有」に近い投稿です。 -- 僕も、寄付をそれなりにするタイプなんですが、寄付をしたことを明言したり、一度寄付をしてしまうと、めちゃくちゃ寄付を募集している人から連絡が来ちゃったりするんですよね。例えば、応援しよう、と思って寄付をしたところ、そのNPOの人から「今はこれをやっているんですが、困っている子供達のために寄付してください」とか「影響力をお借りしたいので、これを拡散してくれ」というのが、頻繁に来てしまいます。これは、その人が悪いというよりも、完全に構造的にこうなっています。というのも、寄付で活動をしている人たちって - マーケティング費用にかけられるお金が限定的である - 寄付を集める場合に、もっとも効率的なのが、一度寄付をした人に営業をかけ続けることである - 寄付をした人の、寄付回数と単価を上げ続けるのが、もっとも活動をドライブさせるという性質があるからです。となると、寄付をするようになると、いろいろな人から「これを拡散してくれ」「これに寄付をしてくれ」という連絡が来続けます。そして、さらに営業効率を上げるとしたら「多く払っている人からアタックするべき」というのもあります。例えば、1000円を寄付してくれる人に倍にしてくれ、と頼むよりも、年間100万円を払っている人に、1%増やしてくれ、というほうが、10倍効果が高いわけなので。 -- また、大きなNPOなどでは、手紙が頻繁にくるようになります。「今、アフリカではこんな悲惨なことが起きています。ワンピース一枚の値段で、この子供が売られています。あなたの寄付が必要」とか、「この子は、一日一色しか食べられません。一日の食費がたったの500円です」みたいな、感情を刺激するような、写真付きのレポートとかで来続けたりします。読んでて辛い気持ちになるやつです。これまた構造的な問題で - ロジックで見せるよりも、感情を最大限刺激して、反応を引き出すことが寄付を集める上でもっとも合理的 - なので、「かわいそうな子供」「悲惨な人たち」というのを、効果的に伝えるようになりがちというのがあります。 -- んで、これら、どちらの問題も「社会的に良い活動をしている人たちがもっとも効果的なことを実行している」という点で、まったく非難されるべきことではないわけです。ただ、「実名で善意で行動して公開したら、お金やSNSでのシェアを要求され続けられるので、限界まで利用される気がしてなんかしんどくなる」というのと「感情を刺激するような悲惨な写真やテキストが送られ続けて、見るのが辛い」みたいなことが起こっちゃうんですよね。 -- 一時期、Facebookの広告が全部、NPOなどで、3投稿につき1投稿くらい、戦争や貧困で悲惨な目に会っている人たちの写真が出てきたり、殺処分間近な動物の写真が出てきたりして、みるのが辛い気持ちになったりしました。そして、なんかしてあげたいと思って寄付をしたりすると、さらにターゲットになって広告が増えるという循環になったりしていました。今では、ほとんどが詐欺広告になったので、ほっとしています。 -- というので、寄付をしたことを明言したり、シェアをしていると、どんどんとそういうスパイラルに陥っていき、最終的に悪い感情になっちゃったりするんですね。「いつもテンプレートのメッセージでプレッシャーをかけてくるな」とか「断っても、食い下がってきて、結局寄付とシェアをすることになるな」みたいな気持ちになったら、なんか、その人たちの活動が目に入るだけで、疲れてしまうというか。また、NPOや社会活動をやっている方がよくいうこととして、「こういう現状を知っておいてもらいたい」というのがあります。それは本当にそうだろうなあ、と思うのですが、それを知り続けた結果、ものすごい暗い気持ちになってしまいます。でも「目を背けてはいけない」とか「恵まれている人は知っておくべき」みたいなプレッシャーも出てきちゃってて、、結果として、戦争、人種差別、アフリカの貧困国の惨状、子供への虐待、シングルマザーの貧困、食事を食べれない子供や若者、中毒症患者、などいろいろな情報が入ってきて、認知と感情の限界に達してしまう、みたいなのが感じます。あらゆる困っている人の情報を摂取し続けると、気分が落ち込んでしまうというか。 -- というので、個人的には、社会活動系は、なるべくこっそりやろう、匿名でやろう、という気持ちになっています。寄付自体をやめるとかはよくないですし、続けたいので、自分が続けやすい、疲弊しない形にしたいというのが本音です。寄付をしていることを公言するのはめっちゃ良いことだと思いますし、「自社のブランディングになるからやろうぜ！」という意思決定でも、それで困っている人にお金が流れるのは良いことだと思うので、どんどんやったほうがいいと思うんですが、このような理由で公言しない人もいるので、書いてみました！インターネットで何を叩かれてもさほどダメージがないんですが、善意の人からの行動の方が、ダメージが蓄積するなあ、と思っています。
