Too much noise will shred the softest parts of me. at the crash of a cymbal, I am reminded of the moonlight reflected from each pointed tooth of a gator as it thrashes the baby gazelle in its jaws with neither mercy nor conscience. then the beast, one more living creature just breathing and hungry, sinks beneath the surface of the river. the ripples on the water smooth over, all is quiet again and I am left trembling, holding the lifeless stars the cymbal has shaken out of the sky.

Maria-Cristina Necula is a Romanian-American writer, poet, and singer based in New York. She holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from The Graduate Center. Her dissertation-based book, The Don Carlos Enigma: Variations of Historical Fictions was published in 2020 by Academica Press. She has given talks on opera, languages, and literature at The Graduate Center, Baruch, The City College of New York, and UCLA Southland. Necula studied classical singing in New York, Bucharest, and at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna, and has performed at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Merkin Hall, Florence Gould Hall, and the Westchester Broadway Theatre, among other venues. Her first book, Life in Opera: Truth, Tempo, and Soul (Amadeus Press, 2009), offers a collection of encounters with famed personalities of the opera world and several personal essays. Necula is also a translator of six languages. Her rhymed translation of Molière’s comedy The School for Wives was performed in Canterbury, England. Her French and English translations of testimonials by noted international personalities collected in Europe à la carte(éditions le cherche midi, 2009), including her own contributions to the book, honored the fall of the Berlin Wall’s 20th anniversary. Une première bande annonce de Call Me by Your Name a été dévoilée

Le film est l'adaptation sur grand écran du roman éponyme de l'Egyptien André Aciman, sorti en 2007. L'histoire se situe en Italie, en 1983 et se centre sur le personnage d'Elio, un adolescent réservé qui passe ses vacances d'été dans une grande villa familiale. Il y rencontre Oliver, un étudiant américain plus âgé, venu travailler avec son père. Les deux jeunes hommes vont s'éveiller ensemble au désir et une passion amoureuse va rapidement naître. L'acteur américain Armie Hammer (The Lone Ranger, The Social Network) fera face à Timothée Chalamet (Homeland), mais aussi à Michael Stuhlbarg (Arrival) et aux deux Françaises Amira Casar (Planetarium) et Esther Garrel (17 filles, Camille redouble). Le long métrage a été diffusé dans de nombreux festivalset a reçu les prix Meilleur Film et Révélation pour Timothée Chalamet ce lundi, lors de la 27e édition des Gotham Independent Film Awards. Dix souhaits pour les nominations des Oscars

Les nominations en vue de la 89e édition des Academy Awards seront annoncées le mardi 24 janvier prochain. Voici 10 souhaits que j’ai à cet égard :

1 - Juste la fin du monde en nomination comme Meilleur film en langue étrangère

Injustement vilipendé par certains à Cannes, d’où il est néanmoins reparti avec le Grand Prix, le plus récent - et meilleur - film de Xavier Dolan est toujours dans la course aux Oscars, ayant été retenu sur la “courte liste”. S’il obtient sa nomination mardi, ce sera la première du Canada depuis 2011-2012-2013, alors que trois de nos longs métrages avaient été finalistes en trois années consécutives (Incendies, Monsieur Lazhar, Rebelle).

2 - Denis Villeneuve en nomination comme Meilleur réalisateur

Il s’est retrouvé aux Oscars en 2011 avec Incendies, puis a commencé à tourner d’excellents films américains tels que Prisoners et Sicario, qui n’ont toutefois pas enflammé les remises de prix. Tout le contraire d’Arrival, qui ne cesse de recevoir des nominations prestigieuses, dont récemment une pour Denis Villeneuve de la part de la Directors Guild of America. S’il est nommé aux Oscars comme Meilleur réalisateur, il sera le premier Québécois à recevoir cet honneur.

3 - Des tonnes de nominations pour La La Land

Mon film préféré de l’année pourrait bien être celui qui recevra le plus de nominations. Meilleur film, meilleur réalisateur, meilleur scénario, meilleure direction photo, meilleur montage, meilleure direction artistique, meilleure musique, meilleure chanson... Et bien sûr Emma Stone comme Meilleure actrice et Ryan Gosling comme Meilleur acteur!

4 - Moonlight fait oublier #OscarsSoWhite

Mon autre film préféré de 2016, Moonlight, mérite plein de nominations lui aussi : meilleur film, meilleur réalisateur, meilleur scénario, meilleur direction photo... Tous les acteurs sont également exceptionnels, mais on s’attend surtout à ce que Mahershala Ali et Naomie Harris soient finalistes dans les catégories de soutien. En plus, si Moonlight est reconnu dans toutes ces catégories ou presque, il fera oublier pour un moment la controverse #OscarsSoWhite. Surtout que les films Fences et Hidden Figures ont aussi des chances de recevoir des nominations...

5 - O.J.: Made in America en nomination comme Meilleur documentaire

Long métrage, série télé ou hybride des deux, ce documentaire de près de 7 heures et demie est un chef-d’œuvre qui mérite amplement une nomination. Malgré sa longueur, je l’ai regardé deux fois déjà et je serais intéressé à le revoir encore, tellement c’est un portrait riche non seulement du “procès du siècle”, mais aussi de toute l’histoire récente des relations raciales aux États-Unis.

6 - Isabelle Huppert en nomination comme Meilleure actrice

Il faut vraiment voir l’actrice française dans Elle, où elle est magnifique en femme à la sexualité en montagnes russes, tour à tour soumise et en contrôle, abusée et abusive, souffrante et orgasmique... Le film de Paul Verhoeven ne plaît pas à tous, mais la performance de Huppert fait l’unanimité. 

7 - Une nomination pour la direction photo de Rodrigo Prieto dans Silence

Est-ce parce que le film de Martin Scorsese a été seulement dévoilé très tard en 2016? Ou à cause de son apparente austérité? D’une façon ou d’une autre, je suis très étonné que Silence soit ignoré par la majorité des remises de prix jusqu’à maintenant. Même si on n’adore pas le film, il faut assurément reconnaître ses qualités artistiques, à commencer par la superbe direction photo de Rodrigo Prieto - pratiquement chaque plan du film est comme un tableau.

8 - Une nomination pour la musique de Mica Levi dans Jackie

J’aimerais beaucoup que l’Academy souligne la qualité exceptionnelle de la musique mi-solennelle, mi-déstabilisante de Mica Levi dans Jackie, qui contribue autant que la performance de Natalie Portman au succès du film.

9 - Mel Gibson en nomination comme Meilleur réalisateur

D’abord, simplement parce que Hacksaw Ridge est un des films les plus spectaculairement mis en scène de l’année. Mais aussi parce qu’il me semble que Mel Gibson a fait sa traversée du désert, qu’il a assez payé pour ses erreurs et qu’il mérite d’être reconnu à nouveau comme un des réalisateurs de scènes d’action les plus doués qui soient.

10 - Daniel Radcliffe en nomination comme Meilleur acteur de soutien

Mes souhaits précédents sont relativement réalistes, mais ce dernier est complètement impossible : que les Oscars réalisent à quel point il est extraordinaire que Daniel Radcliffe soit parvenu à composer un personnage attachant et émouvant dans un rôle aussi casse-gueule que celui d’un cadavre flatulent! Évidemment, Swiss Army Man est un film qui a beaucoup trop de détracteurs pour recevoir des prix ou même des nominations. Mais si vous aimez le cinéma vraiment original et différent, je vous conseille fortement d’y jeter un coup d’oeil.

It was Meriden’s last night as a wizard. After fifty years of government service, he’d given up the job with a formal letter and a sense of relief. He would miss the power, but there were other kinds of magic.  

Dew drops twinkled in the moonlight, making constellations of the hay fields. Fireflies streaked past like earthbound meteors. Meriden slowed his gait and watched them from the rutted dirt lane, jealous of their reckless trajectories.

For the first, fresh decades of his career, capturing escaped moonlets mattered to Meriden. He thought keeping order in the universe made him a hero, an adventurer. Now, Meriden knew better. He despised what he’d become, a hired goon, a bully of innocent moonlets.

A puddle appeared before him. The full moon which should have been reflected within it had escaped, but these renegade reflections never went far.

There, frolicking in the meadow, flirting with the fireflies. Silly, innocent thing. They did so love their freedom.

Meriden wished he could let the moonlet be, just this once, but the government’s rules were strict, and his pension hung in the balance.

With a twinge of guilt, Meriden whispered the words he’d said a million times before. Lunatung shivarium octanthus. His heart wasn’t in it, but a potent magic shivered in the dark matter between the words.

The moon’s reflection struggled against the spell, calling upon gravity, physics, and all the other moon magic at its disposal. If it had hands, it could drag its fingers in the dirt. If it had a voice it could scream, but none of that would help.

The moonlet sank into the murky water of the puddle, slow and helpless. Cool muck kissed the bottom-most curve, oozing past the Ocean of Storms, past the craters of Copernicus and Archimedes, the man in the moon all but drowned, the green cheese soggy with leftover rain.

The scent of stirred up muck mingled with the burnt gunpowder smell of the moon. Meriden retched at the metallic taste it left in his mouth.

The moonlet struggled to escape, the puddle sloshing.

Meriden sighed. He hated this part.

At last the moonlet stilled, its wild, moon spirit breaking.

As the puddle smoothed to glass, Meriden glimpsed himself inside it. Tired. Old. Nothing more than the reflection of a wizard.

He set a final spell to hold the moonlet and tried not to loathe himself as he walked away. Tomorrow, Meriden promised himself, he’d make things better.

But tomorrow he’d be out of magic.

He turned, the moonlet’s gravity too heavy to ignore. Magic tingled at his fingertips. Stars sparkled overhead, fireflies wove through the meadow, and Meriden took his chance.

He cast a fistful of magic at the puddle.

A violent joy surged in his chest as the moonlet launched from its prison. With the last of the night’s magic, Meriden dissolved himself into a cloud of shimmering stardust and leapt into orbit around the moonlet. Together, they rocketed into a universe of twinkling stars.
