First you procrastinate on the task because it is not a big enough deal to get done urgently. Then you procrastinate on the task because it has become such a big deal that doing it is overwhelming. You would think that this implies a middle point where it is just big enough of a deal to get done easily, however the inherent perversity of the universe's causal geometry prevents this

had the seminar for this module today and honestly i think it’s my favourite class this year i wish i had him for portuguese language too
my teacher for the cultures and societies of the portuguese speaking world module i’m doing is far too humble he’s a fantastic teacher/lecturer, i could listen to him for hours, but he’s always like “you’re probably fed up of me talking at you now” NO FERNANDO WE LOVE YOU
#he spoke more portuguese today as well#cos we’d said we’d like it if there were parts in portuguese#so like there was a short text extract in portuguese and he read it out#and i love portuguese portuguese i miss being able to hear it as often😭#he’s from coimbra and my portuguese language teacher last year was from lisbon so different but both portuguese#but my teacher this year is from rio#and it’s not that i dislike the accent#i went to rio earlier this year and actually really liked hearing it!#but the way the teacher herself talks is not as nice as fernando😭#studyblr#langblr

last lesson my portuguese teacher was talking about how as children we weren’t self conscious and didn’t care what other people thought and i lowkey wanted to cry cos for as long as i can remember i’ve worried about those things
#i think i was selectively mute for a while as a child too#like it wasn’t certain but my parents wondered and people brought it up to them that i could be#i also distinctly remember being in the corridor of one of the buildings of my primary school and feeling anxiety in my chest#last year i was diagnosed with social anxiety and autism#so uh#yeah ig i missed out on the whole carefree thing#and i even had a great childhood! so if it weren’t for my brain being how it is i could’ve got that#actually autistic#autistic#anxiety#social anxiety#childhood

Study Faster And Retain More With This Quick Tip
I don’t know a single student who doesn’t want to study faster and retain more at the same time. I usually get a little nervous when trying to use quick fixes to make this happen, but today I have an actual quick tip to help you do just this!
Being a problem solver by nature, I dug into the situation and tried a few new approaches. Some worked, and some did not.
One of my best strategies was to sort the information into two categories:
facts to be memorized
concepts to be understood
You can use this strategy for any course. No matter the subject, there are things you have to memorize (terminology, dates, names, equations, etc) and concepts you need to master. Identifying this creates a clear, drama-free path, meaning you actually study faster and retain more because you are working on the right information in the right way.
How To Memorize Facts
I used to hate memorization work. It seemed tedious and hard and I sucked at it. Or so I thought!
Turns out I just didn’t have good skills. now I have some strategies in my toolbox and I love fact work. It’s easy and you can master it quickly. The key to mastering memorization is to:
Keep a list of what you need to memorize.
Schedule time every day to work on it. You must have the daily repetition if you want new facts to stick in your short-term memory. Start with just 10-min each day and you will see results.
Vary your memorization strategies. If you use only one strategy it becomes less effective.
How To Master Concepts
How you approach concept mastery is going to vary a lot based on the subject you are studying. There are two strategies to help with every subject:
1. Hands-On Practice
You will never fully master a concept through reading about it. You learn the concept through reading, but there is a big difference between learning something and mastering it.
The basics of hands-on practice for any subject are to come up with an applicable problem and solve it. Then come up with another problem and solve it too. Here are a few ideas, by subject, of how you might practice:
literature – Read a book or short story and write an analysis of whatever focus you are working on.
computer science – Come up with a problem and solve it with real code.
graphic design – Imagine a client asked you to design something, and create 3 different solutions for them.
math – Pick an equation, make up some starting numbers, and solve it.
science – Define a hypothesis, create a simple experiment, get in the lab and execute it!
2. Explain Or Teach It To Someone Else
Want to be certain you have mastered and fully understand a concept? Teach it to someone else.
As a teacher myself, I can tell you there have been plenty of concepts I thought I knew really well until I tried explaining them to someone else. You need a thorough understanding yourself before you can help someone else understand it.
Enlist the help of a friend or family member and try to explain a major concept in a few minutes. If you struggle, make note of the sticky spots. They are exactly what you need to work on next.
If you have no problem explaining it and your friend understood everything, mark it off your list and move on to the next concept.
I hope this quick strategy helps you dig out of confusion and take the right action in order to study faster and retain more.

Grab your notes, a fresh piece of paper, and a timer.
Set the timer for 15 minutes.
Go through your notes and sort every piece of information into one of the two categories: concept or fact
Challenge yourself to do this before the timer goes off. Go with your first instinct if you aren’t sure.
Spend the next 5 minutes and map out your next steps.

does anyone have advice for focusing on other stuff when a hyperfixation hits? cos that’s been kind of a problem for me these past few months :’)
and it’s really annoying cos i study spanish & portuguese largely bc language learning is a special interest of mine, i was literally hyperfixated on spanish for months last year before starting uni (v helpful for my A level exams in it!) so i’m used to having that passion and focus directed towards the language areas of my studies not away from them
#the lessons are fine#generally speaking i enjoy the lessons and can focus in them#but anything outside of class not so much#outside of class my mind is overtaken by the magnus archives or guitar or crochet or drawing#or whatever it is that i’m hyperfixated on at the time#and it’s awful#because i love a lot of the aspects of hyperfixation!#it’s the deepest enjoyment i know and i love to sit for hours with what i love and indulge it like that#but i can’t do that all the time because i have things i need to do#and things i want to do that aren’t related to it!#but i can never fully get it out of my mind so i can’t properly focus on anything else#oh audhd how you plague/bless me#studyblr#langblr#studyblr gets real#neurodivergent#audhd#adhd#autistic#hyperfixation

today marks 3 weeks since i moved into uni and i haven’t heard anything from disability services since those first 3 days (which were a transition event with them). i’m supposed to have a mentor who i see each week but i’ve not been told what i need to do to sort that out, i emailed disability services a little over a week ago cos i don’t even know who my disability advisor is but all i got was an automated response - and an outdated one at that, it was talking about emails not being responded to on the day of the queen’s funeral. idk i’m just frustrated because i need that support right now but i’m getting nothing, and i don’t even know what i’m supposed to do to get it.
#i think i’m gonna email again tomorrow#but fuck it’s been so frustrating so far#i also have an extremely noisy fridge which i complained about within days of being here#got told someone would come in a few days but they didn’t#so i went again the next week and the same thing happened#they’ve finally ordered one now but i’ve not been able to sleep properly since i got here cos of that#(i’m in a studio and the fridge is right by the bed)#but like with the mentor#and also the app brain in hand which i’ve also got on dsa but don’t know how i’m supposed to actually get#i can’t see anything on my dsa thing that tells me how to get it#but i’ve not been able to go to the supermarket yet cos it isn’t within walking distance and i couldn’t get on the bus#i got to the bus stop but i was too scared to get on#i haven’t been to the library cos i don’t know what to do when i get there#i got so stressed in my first spanish seminar at the prospect of being asked to answer something on the spot that i could barely speak#which is something i could fix it i could see my advisor and organise my student support plan#i just#really need to get all that support sorted#but when they don’t respond idk how#actually autistic#autistic#autism#studyblr#university#rant
