The books being marketed as dark academia nowadays end up romanticising the genre and add nothing new to the platter except for pretentious quotes and the superficial aesthetic. But the real factor that made TSH so powerful was its satire, and its successors don't realise that; they just blindly copy the aesthetic, and are pitched as the next Donna Tartt or whatever.
