One of my favourite things in criminal minds is that moment in every episode when they say "we're ready to give the profile" and then they give the profile to a room full of police officers and then spend the next 20 minutes just solving the crime themselves without any help from the police officers they built the profile for.

Izzy Hands I Traitor

Well, this got me in my feelings about Izzy...

The tonal shift of the show when you focus in on Izzy’s perspective blows my mind and makes me very sad.

OFMD: Lucius v Izzy (Spoilers!)

finally binged Our Flag Means Death and it wasn't until the end that it finally smacked me in the face just how much Lucius and Izzy are narrative foils. Like the very first thing Ed does after embracing Izzy's Blackbeard image of him is throw Lucius into the water because Lucius most represents emotional healing, open expression and moving forward. Lucius was also (maybe???) the only crewmate to fully see the love between Ed and Stede and actively encouraged it, while Izzy despised it. Why Izzy despises it is the subject of many a tumblr essay, but jealousy and possessiveness definitely comes into it. Meanwhile Lucius is in a healthy, loving open relationship. Lucius' "we don't own each other" and "have you ever been sketched" are so pointed because he's obviously clocked how repressed Izzy is. Izzy uses intimidation to get what he wants, Lucius flirts. Lucius thinks he's so-so but holds himself like he's cute, is honest about what he wants and is a supportive friend. Izzy is full of self-loathing, can't admit that he's probably a masochist in love with Blackbeard, and gaslight, gatekeep, girlbosses everyone in his vicinity, including Ed.

I'm not trying to get sucked into the Izzy/Lucius discourse, I am very much in the camp of 'ship or don't ship whoever you want, don't judge me and I won't judge you', but I liked the animosity between Lucius and Izzy, because Lucius represents everything Izzy hates and perhaps what he secretly wants to be (even if he doesn't know it). I'm interested to where their dynamic goes, depending on whether Izzy gets redemption or is too stuck in his ways.
