the batkids absolutely have a shared spotify account. they each have playlists with the songs they like to listen to while patrolling/doing cases/training/etc.

it’s very popular; gothamites absolutely love listening to it. there have been physical fights over who has the best music taste. sometimes, if they know there’s going to be a specific bat around, they’ll play their playlist. red hood’s is playing somewhere in crime alley pretty much all the time.

the only person who doesn’t have access is bruce, because he might delete the ‘fuck batman’ playlist (which is, of course, a playlist of all the songs bruce hates. they play it whenever he annoys them).

they even have specific playlists for fighting different rogues. oracle can and will take over any speakers she can find to play them.

actually while i’m on an analysis and also bigb train i want to talk a little about the bigb/cleo relationship because. it’s VERY EASY to just read it as “bigb betrayed cleo that one time three seasons ago and cleo has never forgiven him for this” but there’s way more to it than that and it’s so fascinating i want to shake them around like maracas.

like, okay, the initial betrayal is as much a failure to communicate as it is an actual betrayal. cleo says that if bigb had just TOLD HER she would have let him, and I believe this (loyalty is an extremely consistent cleo trait). however JUST EARLIER THAT SESSION she’d also been talking about how she wouldn’t trust someone with the boogeyman curse and can’t believe someone would betray their allies. bigb heard that, decided he couldn’t tell cleo (because she’d hate him for it), and panicked himself right into a corner where he ended up doing the thing that was WAY WORSE for that relationship. also left out is that part of why cleo got that mad wasn’t even bigb’s fault; she was ALSO mad because lizzie and ren sided with him over her, and she felt betrayed by everyone at once. which she then pinned on bigb. meanwhile, while bigb apologized, he never let go of the idea that he'd had no other choice, and never really addressed the unstated hurt of 'cleo also felt like her friends had been turned against her', so it never rang as sincere to cleo. so like, more going on there than just a betrayal!

but like, let’s talk about their relationship after that, shall we?

on cleo’s end, she’s a character who tends to hold on to relationships across seasons, for better and for worse. the widow’s alliance basically never ending; martyn and cleo and their inability to be normal about each other; cleo and etho’s quiet understanding; and, as one of these important tentpoles, bigb and cleo being unable to trust each other. she carried that hurt with her into the few interactions they had in double life, and that in turn helped to color everything else. see, cleo doesn't just hold on to relationships; she holds grudges, and bigb is the ultimate target of that. unlike some of her potential grudges, she's never had a scenario where she and bigb were on the same side in order to temper the grudge. she's also never gotten the boogey curse herself, making it even harder for her to temper it and understand.

so, even after things like limited life where she's started to be less Immediately Angry the moment she feels betrayed (thank you scar for being kind of a moron and getting cleo that lesson), she still holds on to the last life version of bigb in her head. also, because of that, it makes it easy for her to just... continue perpetuating that. she shuns bigb and assumes he has some reason she needs revenge again. that, in turn, pushes bigb to doing another thing she needs revenge for, so she tries to get it, so they keep spiraling downwards in a cycle of mistrust, because cleo has also made herself untrustworthy to bigb.

meanwhile, on bigb's end... he tried to apologize and she wouldn't take it! she sees all of this as an irrational grudge on cleo's part, and there's been very little to discount that. but also because bigb has a tendency to go off and do his own thing and hold himself apart from people, he has made very little effort to meaningfully fix this. in fact, because he assumes cleo will continue to hold a grudge, he continues to treat her a bit like an enemy, continuing to provoke her at multiple opportunities.

he can't make that relationship WORSE, after all, so there's no reason NOT TO continue to mess with her. she'll never trust him, so there aren't real consequences if he keeps burning her, because the only consequence is that she'll just continue to never trust him, right? it's a simple relationship! and in some ways it's comforting, even; cleo is someone he can never mess up with, because that bridge is already burnt.

and ironically? this makes their relationship surprisingly stable. they will KEEP ON sticking knives in each other, of course. even when they don't have a good reason for it, cleo will assume bigb must have done something and bigb will assume cleo will hate him anyway. but in turn, i think they VERY MUCH know where they stand with each other. and tragically, that means neither of them have an incentive to try to fix this. they're both very, very entrenched in how they see each other now, and either of them will see any attempted olive branches as another place for everything to go wrong. they're cleo and bigb, who don't trust each other because bigb killed her one time, forever. that's who they are. that's how they see each other. and it's not just because that happened; it's because they keep reinforcing it, over and over and over again, in a way that makes communicating that they could stop nearly impossible.

that and i think cc!bigb and cc!cleo out of character really enjoy continuing to have their cubitos have a stupid irrational grudge on each other because they think it's funny but that's unrelated to the character analysis,

I get how tempting it is to just label flower husbands as “toxic” and move on, but god they can be SO much more nuanced than that, it makes me insane.

I think something that goes largely unexplored by the fanbase is c!scott’s obsession with composure. he’s clearly very proud of his ability to stay calm under pressure and be two steps ahead of everyone else— not that he’s afraid to rely on people, him and cleo very clearly have that unshakable trust between them, but i think that sometimes he gets so wrapped up in being steady, reliable scott, never hot-headed, never spiteful, or clumsy, or nervous.

and jimmy is a very real threat to that composure, more often than not.

and i think the way their relationship functions in 3rd life, while steady at the time, definitely set them up for complications down the road. scott, for as fiercely dedicated to his allies as he is, kind of tends to handle jimmy with kid gloves for the earlier parts of their relationship. he’s not very good at the death game, but that’s fine, he doesn’t need to be, scott will take care of it— he’ll get them set up with armor and potions and walls and jimmy can do… whatever it is he does when scott’s not around. mostly getting swindled, if he had to guess. but it’s fine, because scott can be steady, level headed, clever—

i do think most of scott’s ribbing about how he doesn’t know why he lets jimmy do anything when all he does is get scammed half the time is genuinely all in good fun, (jimmy is more than happy to play the fool most of the time, if only to bring a little bit of levity to things) it is super symptomatic of the way scott actually thinks about him. i don’t believe he thinks jimmy is actually stupid or anything, but i do think scott doesn’t quite trust him to get anything done. scott would never in a million years let himself lean on jimmy for any kind of support, because in scott’s mind jimmy’s job is to be bright and brash and only listen to that heart of his that’s too big for his body, too big for this game.

and i think too often we forget just how much losing jimmy destroyed scott in 3rd life. you ever think about how wrecked he must’ve been to place 10th despite being a consistent finalist in every other season? do you think about how all he has left is the burning, white-hot urge for revenge from the second jimmy’s body hit the ground?

i don’t think scott ever wants to feel like that again. i don’t think scott wants anyone to see him like that again. i think scott tries very hard to love jimmy from a safe distance where no one gets hurt. and i think that distance fucking kills jimmy, metaphorically speaking.

(also, tangentially related, i think there’s something to be said for how instantly tango goes “we only have a short time together, your curse will probably get us killed, and that’s fine.” and how jealous scott gets of that sentiment. as far as scott is concerned, tango and jimmy are of the same niche— they feel everything, loudly, even if it causes problems and even if it gets messy. and god that just makes his blood boil.)

i’m just so… entranced with the way scott carries himself with so much confidence and it’s not like he’s insecure, he really believes that, he’s a strong player and he knows that, but also revealing any emotion he deems to be “ugly” or “messy” makes him start to completely unravel. the driving force behind him is always love and loyalty and protectiveness over the people he cares about, but he’s juggling that with being dead set on never getting so close that losing them will completely ruin him.

anyway, this is getting away from me, but i think a lot of jimmy’s frustration with scott comes from the fact that he refuses to let their relationship go both ways, and i think by the time of the infamous “say i love you back” scene in limlife he’s just exhausted with throwing himself repeatedly against scott’s brick wall of perfectionism. that, and the whole Situation between them in double life, which i could honestly make it’s own post but good god i need to STOP typing or this will go on forever. forgive my completely disorganized ramblings i just have been trying to get all this down on paper FOREVER

i keep forgetting to post this. anyways, secret life symbolism! masterpost is here.

jimmy is a golden labrador. of course he had to be a dog. i was thinking maybe golden retriever, but that was already taken by dl bigb.

mumbo is a hairy-tailed mole. all the mounders had to be moles. i was thinking hairy tail like hairy mustache? i’m not sure.

tango is a pink spotted lady beetle. ladybugs symbolize luck, which fits with the heart lottery. they especially mean luck in love, which is perfect for the heart foundation. also why i chose pink.

skizz is a luzon bleeding-heart. ofc i’m keeping him as a dove, and this one is perfect. mainly for the name. very heart foundation coded.

etho is a short-tailed chinchilla. chinchillas bathe in dust. gravel house. hair often drawn fluffy, like a chinchilla. need i say more?

martyn is a shiba inu. again, dogs. i thought this one just fit him.

bigb is a snow coral corn snake. pink like cherry blossoms! snake, because they tend to represent betrayal, but in reality can be very sweet. just like bigb!

cleo is a secretary bird. i had a LOT of trouble with this one. i eventually settled with this. they symbolize protection and growth, which i think works for her.

grian is a common cactus finch. ok this one i’m super proud of. this season is the one most associated with the watchers- and where did the watchers originate? evo, of course. cactus finches are one of the species included in darwin’s finches. evolution. why i chose the cactus finch- desert duo stuff from the beginning of the season.

impulse is a rosy maple moth. this one is just vibes. pink like the cherry blossoms, yellow like impulse. plus he matches with scott.

bdubs is an american shrew mole. i had to break some of my usual rules for this one. i usually make him a mouse, but i couldn’t do that and also make him a mole. i compromised and made him a mole that looks a little like a mouse.

joel is a star-nosed mole. hey now, you’re an all star!

scott is an orchid mantis. not much to say on this one. pink flower bug, pink flower biome. also scott has preying mantis vibes.

and that’s all! we’re done (until next series, that is).

lizzie’s sl symbol is the jack-o’-lantern mushroom! the name, of course, is perfect for the pumpkin queen, but i do have a couple other reasons.

it’s poisonous, but it looks a lot like certain chanterelles to the untrained eye. lizzie too may seem harmless, but we all know she certainly isn’t.

they’re also bioluminescent, and i think they would look perfect in the end, which is where lizzie died.

secret life second and third place symbolism, let’s go! here is the symbolism masterpost, if you’re curious.

pearl is a purple iris. irises symbolize trust, and this was the first time pearl had a team she could really trust. the iris is also a part of the eye, and this is certainly the season of the watchers (this is the main reason i chose purple). also, iris the greek goddess is a messenger for the gods, which is a nice nod to mailbox.

gem is carnelian. i could not make her anything other than a gemstone, naturally. it is, of course, red, which is fitting for the one who started the boogeyman apocalypse. it also represents strength and creativity, which i think is perfect for her!

it’s about that time, right after a life series, where we all debate about what exactly we’re going to use as the symbol for the newest winner. i’ve seen a few answers- mainly earth, pluto, or mercury. these are all well and good, but i feel i’m ready to throw my hat in the ring with an entirely new concept: the constellation of cepheus.

cepheus is a character in the story of andromeda, in greek mythology. basically, the queen cassiopeia says that her daughter, the princess andromeda, is more beautiful than the sea nymphs. posiden takes offense to this, and sends a sea monster to attack their kingdom. cepheus asks an oracle what he should do, and the oracle tells him to offer his daughter to the monster as a sacrifice. he does, chaining andromeda to a rock by the sea. the hero perseus arrives, slaying the monster and saving the princess. (there’s of course a lot more to this story, so go read up if you’re interested!)

now, how does this relate to scar? well, let’s think about his tasks. two of them, specifically- the ones that made him into the server’s villain. like cepheus, he was told to do wrong things. you could argue, for both these characters, that they had no choice. they would have faced consequences (or at least, been denied rewards, which could be a punishment). but they also, didn’t necessarily have to do the awful things they did. both caught between a rock and a hard place.

something to note about this is how cepheus is often depicted as having his hands up, praying for andromeda’s safety. remember, scar didn’t want to be the villain. during that first task, where he had to do the opposite of what people said, he was incredibly distressed.

the connection between the oracle and the secret keeper is absolutely solid. prime au material right there.

(also, if you’re curious about the constellation part. i already made a whole post about scott being orion, but i’ll explain it here. scott as the stars was great when it was just the sun, moon, and stars, but now that we’re assigning other planets to the winners, it feels kinda weird to me. they’re all specific objects, and he’s just… the stars. all of ‘em. not even a type or group of stars. i definitely could have made him an individual star, but constellations give me a bit more to work with. and i was thinking scott could use a buddy in the constellation club, and who better than scar! SUNflowers, guys. the sun is a star. this all makes sense i swear).
