I'm trying to write chapter titles with another WIP I have right now. Never thought to include chapter summaries, but I remember Evren: Enter the Dragonette by Marian Tee, would have a chapter title and then have a sort of "reflection" or voice over from the main character:
Chapter One "When I was sixteen. I had the emotional depth of a Paris Hilton Song. Years and years from now, I know Paris' legend will live on and you will still understand what I mean. But I digress. Sixteen was pretty much an eventful year for me. Sixteen was the age I first fell in love. Sixteen was the age I witnessed my first murder, and sixteen was the age I turned Evren to continue living."
I would like to imagine it as a voice over from the main character. It's a fun aspect of the novel. But anyways, I agree. Bring back interesting chapter titles and summaries. It adds to the story.
Also, I find it kind of funny that Dianne Wynne Jones sorta does both: names the chapter and has a summary, but it's mixed together.
In Which Sophie Talks to Hats
Her chapters have a very similar structure where it starts with "In Which". I like the structure since it has a nice feeling to it, I think.
Now I want to try it with my current WIP. But other WIPS as well. I would love to see it more often, and how writers would play with it.
There should be more books that have chapter titles, and then a little summary of the chapter below them. You don't have to be boring with them, or spoil the whole chapter by telling what happens - you could make it vague, like a prophecy of something you know is going to happen, but you don't know how, or with what results.
Having one-sentence summaries like "Chapter 12 - where the Queen's hound makes a fatal mistake" and you're like oh shit does this refer to the queen's actual hunting dog, or the guy that's mockingly called her lapdog? "Chapter 24 - where justice finds a thief, and a thief finds justice" and you're like ooooh shit the cute little pickpocket is going to get caught, and then it turns out that shit, she does get caught, but by someone who actually agrees that she's right to steal to help feed her family, and gets her help instead, which is justice.
You already know what's going to happen, but not how.

Wow...nice inspiration. I definitely feel like I'm driving a night trying to plot out my stories. Feel less alone.
Tumblr media
Been thinking about this a lot lately... It's especially good advice for those of us that are terrible plotters. Just take it one step at a time.

Meta Writing/Literary Analysis, Fandoms & Gushing about TJLC Explained
Those of you who wrote meta for your fandoms, wrote fanfiction, and made fanart, I am inspired by you. I watched a series of YouTube videos about someone dedicating their channel to one show that they love and analyzing it. It made me think about some literary analysis papers I made while studying in college.
I'm a procrastinator. I don't have any papers that I haven't done at the last minute while studying in college for my English degree. Usually, I'm not proud of the papers I made, although I made good grades on them. I wonder if I wouldn't feel so bad on the papers I wrote if I hadn't procrastinated? Most likely.
These are some topics I wrote about. I plan on rewriting them in the future, but how long that will take is beyond me. I have an idea, but it would be interesting to know how many people are most interested in which topic.
Topics:
Is Shakespeare sexist or feminist?
Why do I like the Movie Howl's Moving Castle when people around me are confused by it?
(I don't quite remember the topic exactly) Study of the Dystopian Genre with Larissa Lai's Salt Fish Girl
Homeschool, and why it's better then public school | How Public School could've Effected my Growth
Some info on these topics:
The first topic on my list was a set theme from a premade list by my teacher. I found it interesting for the fact that when I read Shakespeare I was getting mixed signals by his views. I found a paper that I could've added to the paper, but I couldn't 'cause procrastination.
The second point on this list is when I realized that although I loved these movies, my immediate family and other people close to me were confused by the movie? It was a exploration on my standards in the media I interact with. I usually go with the potential of the thing rather then if the actual thing is good. Is the movie Howl's Moving Castle objectively good?
The third point on the list is the testament of my burn out from going to college. I couldn't focus on anything I wanted to. Let alone read the dystopian classics within a week. This paper is where I want to circle back to the most, because the book Salt Fish Girl, became one of my favorite books, and the topic is fascinating to me.
The last point is self-explanatory. I used this book about homeschooling in high school and found a lot of good stuff in there. I also went back to the topic while I was in college. I envy the people who was so into the media and subjects they loved, and looked to how I was taught growing up to see if I could've been like my peers if I had been in a different school setting.
Unfinished Topics and Literary Analysis in the Future:
What YouTube channel inspired me to write this post, design a blog, and want to write my own Meta in the future for fandoms I enjoy?
TJLC explained
YEARS too late finding this channel, but I'm still glad I came across it. Was a sort of dramatic irony, watching her channel after the fact of series 4 of BBC Sherlock (for those who don't know, TJLC is "The JohnLock Conspiracy" for having Sherlock Holmes and John Watson actually be endgame).
Despite this, even if they never came back for her retrospective after series 4 aired, I still would've found her analysis spectacular. I don't think it mattered that it was "wrong" (for those who watched it understand why I put this in quotations, for those who don't, watch her videos, it's worth it), but how well executed it was.
I adored how they included mirrors, parallel's, symbolism. I mean, there were a lot, lol. It made me think about writing in symbolism differently. It's like a how-to video on writing subtext and exploring characters and symbolism. The phone stands for the heart!!!
I had no idea that there was meta for the theories of TJLC. I never heard of essays of fan theories referred to as "Meta" before. After I finished the videos, and read their fix-it fic (I'm pretty sure it could be considered a fix-it fic, she re-wrote series 4), I thought about my unpolished papers.
Here's the fic they wrote, if anyone is interested:
I'm hoping that making my blog on Wix would help me kick myself in gear into doing these things. Maybe a different environment could help. I dunno why, but for some reason I'm convinced of this. In three weeks, May 15th, I'll give an update. Whatever helps.

I remember when I was pursuing a creative writing degree, I took a fiction class. I wrote a short story that focused on internal struggle with my character's family. I didn't want anything outside of this to happen.
People in the class were telling me I needed external conflict. But there was nothing I could think of that I wanted to happen. Their suggestions didn't fit what I had in mind.
Couldn't I have a story that focused on the internal conflict?
I'm not sure if my situation is what the twitter post tried to explain, but I would like them to give examples.

Unfortunately, I feel like I'm going to end up being a CS Lewis writer when I want to be a Tolkien writer. Now there must be a saying attached to this, like how Pollyanna is a term for people with positivity bias. =w=
Fuck that post going around saying "you can have coffee in your story without justifying it :) you don't need to explain everything :)" I want, no, I DEMAND a fully researched ethnobotanical paper on every single food item in your work, if you don't explain to me where did potatoes come from in your fantasy setting or don't explain how the industry of coffee works over interstellar distances with full detail you are doing things wrong and I personally hate you and I hate your stupid story, fuck you

I have a character who's going to be knowledgeable on survivor tactics, and this could be a great thing to keep in mind. Not sure it'll be used, but that's what happens sometimes when Authors think about their stories 24/7 😌
Also, a great thing to know in general ^^
I've never been close to a lake for long amounts of time, nor have I had weather that would ice-over a lake, so this won't apply to me. I'll never know, though.

Thankee for the tag! I'm gonna share something from a short story I'm writing:
What if he stays down here alone for the rest of his life? For forty years, wondering how long he’ll stay.
So, I shall be tagging @a-had-matter @starscribes @authorofstories55 for this tag-game :3c I hope you have fun wit it.
No Context WIP Tag Game
Share a line from a WIP with no context. 💗
Thank you so much for the tag @deanwax I really needed a lil nudgie nudge because I've been stuck with writers block and I've been dying to hop into my writing again in any capacity. Tag games always help with that. It's also a bit more than a line, my bad. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I shall also give a little nudgie nudge (absolutely no pressure) to @shadow-of-tea-and-tea @kalihellwillhopefullywrites @alinacapellabooks @spamfromlee @the-ethereal-lorestar
Raine knew from the moment he was slapped awake to a dark holding cell, hands cuffed behind his back, a bucket of ice water dumped over his head: this time he had seriously fucked up.

This is very true. I mean, how else are the characters going to feel 3-dimensional if not for these scenarios?

Vury relatable. I've written similar content before, but I like how this portrays this idea, especially with the style. It feels fractured, similar to the feeling of disconnect, discontent, and inability to move. Sorta like a car that could barely run as the engine backfires.
When it comes down to to to it, the question is: what do I do? I don’t know, so I do nothing and if I never know, I’ll never go I’ll sit like a match unlit until the light hits me too I still know nothing so nothing’s what I’ll do

Quick context about the 150 Palestinians that Israel will release from its prisons in exchange for 50 hostages held by Hamas as part of the 2023 "ceasefire" agreement:
Among the ones who will be released today will be 24 Palestinian women and 14 Palestinian children.
There are currently 7,200 Palestinians held by Israel, this number does not include prisoners from Gaza like day workers who were kidnapped by Israel.
2,300 of the Palestinian prisoners are administrative detainees, which means they are held indefinitely without charges.
Since October 7, Israel had imprisoned 3,145 Palestinians in the West Bank alone, 250 of whom are children, a number which is unprecedented since 1967.
Remember that israel will continue to hold about 250 Palestinian children in its prisons under brutal conditions.
While Israel has been sloppily playing the victim part and desperately trying to make this about ~Khamas~, it is crucial to note that all of the above numbers are from the West Bank alone, where Hamas does not operate. This is a reminder that Israel is routinely aggressive against Palestinians regardless of their age, where they are, political affiliations, etc...

As a writer who struggles with worldbuilding because it overwhelms me, I think it would be interesting if addition to editing, and beta reading services, and things like that, there's also worldbuilders who helps writers (particularly fantasy/sci-fi writers) make worlds more in depth. It would be nice to talk with world builders give me advice on my worlds, lol.
Alternatively, It could also pair worldbuilders who don't write stories as much—it could help them share their worlds :) I'm not sure if this is already a thing (me, other writers, and probably future readers would love this). OOOOOH YEAH GHOST WRITERS. But that requires money and I don't think that's easily assessable. Well, if it is possible, and it does happen, it will give the worldbuilder a reason to make a "history book/codex" of their world, or something similar to D&D lore books. (I believe the work is already there from reading this post.)
I mean another option would be just to write a history book of the world and share it or publish it. It would be fun to start a trend :P
I'm also sure that there would be a mutual understanding between worldbuilder and writer without paywalls. Like, if the book gets profit, that could be the payment for one another's services. I dunno.
But also reblog, to see if more people can give advice that hasn't already been said.
So I'm one of those writers that falls into the trap of world building super hard. I have so many projects I spent months or even years creating, writing lore, doing art for, all kinds of stuff, but never end up telling any actual stories in so they just end up going ultimately unused. One I'm working on right now is likely to fall into this category.
The thing is, I've recently come to the conclusion I enjoy world building more than actually writing in a lot of cases. Don't get me wrong, I still love to write and tell stories and make comics, I won't stop doing that lol, but I also really love making worlds and settings just because I can.
The problem is though, without a story to attach to these worlds, I don't know how to go about actually sharing them in any way. It's fun making things, but to spending so long working on something that no one will ever see is starting to feel... I guess a bit tiering. A few I tried to use little slice of life stories or comics as a way to share the worlds and settings, but they never actually stay slice of lifey. The big comic I'm working on right now, Voidstar, was supposed to be one of these and at some point it went from "cozy space slice of life" to "gay aliens get imprinted on by a baby dragon god and travel the galaxy to fight the government" Needless to say, Scope creep is a bit of an issue for me lol and nothing ever gets done. I also tried making websites on a few occasions or showing stuff off on my portfolio website related to the worldbuilding projects, but that didn't end up working for a bunch of reasons (mainly that my portfolio is on Wix and they're stingy with space for pages/uploads). I also tried World Anvil, and used to really enjoy that, but they've locked way too many features now behind frankly ridiculous paywalls, so It's not really worth it now. Not to mention it was really hard to make WA sites decently accessible.
All of this to say, I want to start sharing these worlds (if nothing else so I stop vanishing from social media for months at a time when I get hyperfixated lol) but I have no idea how. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?
