ngl it makes me nervous that in episode ONE after only TWO MONTHS of dating, our first intro to eddie and marisol together is them in his house being domestic and smiling at his son as if they’re both his parents….. i know ryan said their relationship would be up and down and later on eddie is considering how she fits in his life, but they seem to be serious and settled real quick. like not only has she met chris already but she’s hanging at their house with them?? hmm what are your initial thoughts post-premiere?
Okay, imma start this off by saying I only watched the episode once and I usually type my metas and theories out after at least 2 watches (I do one for the plot and one for details) so I might come back to this later. Also, my first reaction to this was actually "Shannon's ghost had more screentime, we're fine". But one, we didn't actually see the date, we saw Eddie telling Buck about the date, even Ana had multiple dates we saw as they happened not as flashbacks, and Eddie was having panic attacks about her. Two, the show made a big show of how Chris is being supportive this time around and Eddie has this whole no secrets thing with Chris policy so Marisol being at the house makes some sense when you look at it that way. Three, this one is less about the episode and more about Eddie's character as a whole, Eddie overcorrects with everything that went wrong once. From telling Chris he can do anything and being ready to crush that because Chris fell off a skateboard to quitting without a second thought because Chris was scared. Tia Pepa said he's gonna die alone, so he went golfing and hiking to meet people when we never saw him golfing or hiking. His automatic reaction to doing something wrong is to do the opposite. And that reflects on his relationships too. He barged into the loft because Buck was mopping after almost dying and that ended with Buck and Chris getting caught in the tsunami, so the next time Buck died, he stayed off Maddie's list and waited for Buck to come to him. He held Shannon at arm's length for months and then she died so he lost months he could've had with her, so when Buck apologizes he forgives him with no hesitation. Shannon kept accusing him of not actually being present in their relationship with him joining the army, so he's all with Ana way too fast. And that could be the case with Marisol too. I stand by the fact we still don't have enough information on Marisol to get anything definitive, which in itself is proof they are not trying to make us care about her or the relationship, but the thing it's the couples episode, the characters reintroduction episode, the show of dynamics episode, and Marisol's introduction as Eddie's girlfriend episode, and it has more of Eddie's dead wife than his girlfriend (which is exactly what I needed, justice for Shannon Diaz and the way she was written to be fridged). Sure, Marisol is chaperoning with Eddie, but Eddie is talking to Buck about the date, not in the date, so the date is not even relevant enough for us to actually see it, and sure she's existing in the same space as Chris but when Eddie needs actual help with the situation, he goes to Buck. We also don't know how she met Chris, and we didn't see them interact, so we don't know how she exists in Chris' life yet. So, like, we're fine.
And also, Buck and Eddie have some personal growth to do before they can get together in a satisfying way and that could absolutely come from low-stakes relationships with other people, like Eddie learning to have fun and Buck learning how to ask for things.

okay so theory time. i think lou is really making it clear that episode 6 is the end of Tommy at the very least as Buck's love interest like the way he's speaking there's finality with that part of the story. Could Tommy come back in a different capacity as a friend for Buck maybe someone buck can confide in about the Eddie of it all sure absolutely. He's basically teasing it when he says I'm not gonna say why I know this is the end, because that would spoil the reason why Buck and Tommy break up and I think the reason why they break up connects to another Lou quote particularly when said if the fandom love Tommy now they'll love him even more by the end of episode 6. So by that I'm theorizing that the reason Buck and Tommy break up is because Tommy is going to realize that Buck and Eddie are in love with each other and he may pull the Buddie trigger to start moving them towards one another. Maybe he'll tell Buck that it was never his attention he was ultimately trying to get that it's always been about one person and he won't say the same but we know who he's talking about and he's like. You have feelings for someone else and you should figure what those feelings are.
Like I think this all connects to the finality Lou is speaking with when it comes to the end of Tommy at the end of episode 6. I think Tommy is the one that's gonna start the true push to Buddie going canon in some way. Very similar to Sam in New Girl when he basically told Jess in a mutual break up that it's always been about Nick it always will be.
The way Lou has spoken all about Buddie as well even when it wasn't asked by the interviewer is also loud, he's saying how he's rooting for them, he loves them together, how he thinks Tommy has clocked something more, how he always calls it a relationship. Like I think he knows this is all leading to Buddie romance imo.
He's just been very very loud with these two interviews.
We could be looking at a one two punch of Tommy leaving in 6 and Marisol leaving in 7, then we get the freaking combo of the guy that wrote episode 4 and JCC the infamous buddie writer for episode 8....like OH BOY.
Lou...as much as I love him, I don't think he really has any idea where they're planning to take his story. I think how long he stays would depend on 1.) fan reaction and 2.) does Tommy stick around push the story forward anymore? I personally think he could, so I'm not taking the speculation around episode 6 being his last as law.
I know it's super exciting right now because bisexual buck felt literally IMPOSSIBLE and then we got it, and then Eddie repression arc seemed impossible, but it looks like they're starting it, so we're all dreaming big, but as much as I am 100% percent certain Buddie is happening, I can't realistically expect it to happen in the next two or three episodes.
If it does, I'll eat my words, but for now, I'm keeping my episode-by-episode expectations realistic.

I don’t know reeeally how tumblr works because I’m an Old, but I'm going to try anyway because it’s a Friday night and I’ve spent way too much time thinking about this and I wanted to get your thoughts so… I hope this is right. Feel free to ignore me though.
OK OK ok ok… so my new brain rot of the moment under the coma!Eddie theory (though part of me hates the idea of Eddie getting hurt again): We have Buck, who I firmly believe has no confusion in regards to his place in Connor and Kameron’s life and that he 100% knows that he is Donor, not Dad (I mean, a onesie is super typical gift for any expectant couple). I see the show coming back in 6B with Connor getting a little case of cold feet with the fact that Kameron is Officially Pregnant and he is going to be a dad and confiding in Buck, who starts having a little issue being placed in that position since he himself wants a Couch and is still looking for this “key to happiness” thing~ sooo Buck isn’t in a great place.
Meanwhile, Eddie is severely injured on a call and the coma!Eddie arc coalesces (or, if not coma, some other medically incapacitated!Eddie). Now we have Buck also grappling with the fact that his best friend/bro/partner/love of his life is hurt and in the hospital and he needs to take care of their kid. (Ugh, actually a big reason why I hope Eddie isn’t hurt again is because Chris is going to have to go through that AGAIN—anyway) Chris, who is very much growing up but still yet a minor, and whose father has written in Legal Writing that his Buck will be his legal guardian in this very. type. of. situation (!!!!!!!!!!). Of course, OF COURSE Buck steps in (again! just now he knows he legally can as well). He loves this kid. Except who else is in the picture? Helena and Ramon, who come to LA thinking they will be the ones to take Chris in (probably going to framed less in an antagonist way and more in a this-kid-has-so-many-adults-who-love-him way) and then find themselves like ???? What???? Buck who????
“No one will ever fight for my son as hard as you” - So what am I thinking? Buck is taking care of Chris while there’s maybe some sort of family court situation going on… since we know the actors were filming, maybe the Buckley parents step in as character witnesses (do they do that in family court??). As much as I will forever have a grudge against the Buckley seniors and nothing can change my mind that they are terrible parents, 9-1-1 seems to have a bit of a penchant for redemption of parental figures so… maybe that’s how they will be involved? A family court scene could also explain the somewhat preppy!Buck we saw in that BTS video.
I’m not quite sure exactly how the Buck v. Elder Diazs legal guardianship will play out, especially because IRL court tends to drag but What Is Time in TV-world. STILL, at one climactic moment I can imagine a scene in which Connor is calling Buck right before he needs to be in court with a mild freak out about Kameron/Unborn Baby and Buck ends the call with basically a, “You need to be there for your kid… and I need to be there for mine.” MINE — AS IN CHRISTOPHER, Buck finally self-actualizing his role and his importance in Christopher’s life.
Anywho, Eddie eventually wakes up (but not before Chris gets a moment as well, getting a little bit of autonomy and is able to advocate for himself that he loves his Buck and wants to stay with him and maybe Helena/Ramon accept this as fact and realize Buck is More than a coworker etc etc I digress — Eddie wakes up) and is basically like “Uh, duh. Buck is my co-parent and Christopher’s other dad come fIGHT ME ON IT I AM GONNA MARRY THAT MAN. (I just need to ask him out first.)” And THUS beginning the FRIENDS TO FIANCES ARC. THE END. Curtain close on 6B. FriendsToFiances is trending. Tumblr rejoices. *mic drop*
... PHEW. Now how many months do I have before this theory is completely debunked?
Hi lovely! ^u^ It's nice to meet you and please remember, you're not an "old," you're here to enrich us with your knowledge and experience while we share with you what we know! Mutual uplifting for the win! :D *hugs*
LOL Okay, I'll start by saying I love your scenario, I almost don't wanna comment anything at all. XD But since this presumably a meta ask...
One thing regarding Buck is that while yes, a onesie is a very typical gift for a baby, it's the fact that it's a firefighter one that gets to me. Buck put a part of himself into that gift, and the way he broke the news to his friends (it IS simple, Buck! You simply say, "My friend Connor just told me they're having a baby..." the 118 all know the context. But I think he wanted to utter the words "I'm gonna be a father," so he found a way to slip them in) also tells me that he's not really accepted that he's just a donor.
I'm also not sure they'll severely wound Eddie after dealing with his previous injury for all of s5. Lightly? Yeah, that can be. But I can't see him slipping into a coma. And if Eddie freaked out and was ready to interpret his son's wish as being for him to leave the 118, what is he gonna do if he actually goes into a coma? :o How will he ever make a responsible decision to keep being a firefighter if he can't stay out of the hospital for more than one season? Sorry, I'm making fun of 510 Eddie a bit, but I hope you get what I mean.
But I would STILL love to see your scenario play out, if not now, at some point in the next couple of seasons. After all, you are so VERY right in that Eddie saying that line about how no one will fight harder for Chris than Buck, it BEGS to be played out on our screen. We've already seen it once on a physical level, during the tsunami. It would be DELICIOUS to see it on an emotional, custody level. And it would require Buck to do the one thing he struggles with the most: to believe in his own worth. For him to do that so he could do what Eddie wants and what Chris needs would be AMAZING. TV poetry. Give it to me, I'm ready!
Thank you for this ask, have a great day! And here's my ask tag. xoxox

I feel like I might need to stay off tumblr all week because I can already picture the freak outs lol. "Ryan is leaving the show so thats why they are having him make up with his dad so he can move to Texas ". "There wasn't enough canon Eddie queerness". Ext ext.
I think this episode was the perfect example of why its fun to speculate but manage what will actually happen. Sure I would have loved Chris with Buck, and maybe more angst with him in Texas. But logically I was like its probably more about parenting and not queer Eddie because that wasnt his issue with his parents. In fact I was the original anon who posted that to you.
But the thing was there so many clues and this was an amazing episode. And honestly I kind of figured Chris wouldn't be with Buck because this episode needed to be the Buck and Taylor breaking point you know.
But again to anyone who will send you freak outs, unfortunately its not all fanfiction though we would love it. Your probably not gonna get Eddie say I'm gay in the finale. I would bet on lingering looks and at least a ending scene of Buddie together in whatever form. If we are lucky Buck crashing on his couch. And if I'm wrong I will be happy to be wrong. But shipping is always 95% faith and I still have a ton of faith because what else is happening other then 6A being devoted to the romcom of Eddie.
On a side note... I couldn't get into the original Eddie and his dad scene because I was like Helena tie your hair back your cooking for 50. Sorry not sorry!!
Hey Nonnie
Thankfully I have avoided all of the 'Ryan is leaving the show so Eddie is going to move back to Texas' nonsense that I am sure is happening elsewhere so lets keep it that way and not entertain the crazy theories some parts of fandom seem to come up with!!! And I also don't seem to have had many freak outs (fingers crossed that it stays that way!)
it really is a good example of why speculation is just that - speculation and if you forget that you are only setting yourself up for heartbreak!! I've had a great time exploring the various possibilites around Chris being in LA or in Texas (in the end it didn't really matter because we never actually saw him!!) and looking at the queer v parenting of it all. I never expect 95% of what I ramble about to actually come true it's some fun and I know that so I'm rarely left disappointed by what the show actually puts out (the one exception is the fact Taylor is still hanging around like a bad smell but there we go!!)
I personally feel we did get a huge amount of Queer Eddie undertones, and like i've said in many of my ask replies, I never expected Eddie to come out dressed in a rainbow and proclaiming his queerness from the rooftops. We got more or less what I expected, it was maybe a little more subtle than I would have liked, but I'm not mad about it because the parenting aspect is important to Eddies Queer storyline. I said I expected that Eddie and his father would find some common ground from which to go forward - which is what we got, and I expected us to get some insight into young Eddie - which again we got - I would have like more - to have seen it built on and explored further in the episode, but I get why we didn't and actually think it sets up 6a perfectly.
The 911 writers are always careful with the language they choose to write into the script and what we got from that script, from the set, props, costumes etc has plenty to explore in terms of signposting where Eddie is headed. To me us hearing how Eddie was pushed into 'manhood' at such an early age shows exactly why he would have buried any queer feelings and thoughts he was having - the assumption that he would perform the role of man of the house in his fathers absence, not have a present father figure and being given so much responsibility are all clear indicators that Eddie was pushed into a certain box and not given the freedom to explore who he actually was/is. We are now seeing that he is going to be able to have the freedom to explore what he didn't get to as a child and part of that will continue to revolve around his parents.
It sets up 6a having a visit from Helena and Ramon - as Eddie continues to have his queer awakening and if we do maybe we'll get to see Buck parenting Christopher thrown into the mix and witness the reactions of Eddies parents to it all - it would be a great and interesting thing to look at. I would love for them to see Buck coparenting Chris and see how he is thriving and ho Eddie is also thriving and figure it out and be happy - is that something we'll get - who knows but its entirely possible and we'll only find out when 6a airs!
As for Helenas hair - I get where you are coming from, but totally get why they styled it that way - it was about her being in control, but also a way of hiding her from the conversation - so she was there, but also not there- her hair was a curtain - a bit like a church confessional!!

Hold up...your theory on all the season finales focusing on Buck and his love interests — Buck ending each season being left by someone he loved (he didn't really love Ali, but doesn't matter). Hold. Up. Not really a theory, but a keen observation of fact on your part! But what was different about season 4, hmm? He almost lost Eddie, but the episode ended with Eddie staying, Eddie choosing Buck. THIS SHOW!!!
911 narrarive parallels are rarely one-on-one, they are like fractals. What on earth is coming next???
(And I am now just remembering that that scene with Buck and Eddie was the final scene of the episode, before the montage.)
I don't know what I'm asking except I would love to hear more of your thoughts on this parallel (or anything else 911 that is on your mind...)
OHohoh be careful what you ask for, I will reach into my brain and splatter the proverbial canvas with every over-analytical triviality I can get my hands on.
@yramesoruniverse I am so happy to see you in my inbox, every time your url pops up on my dash I smile. I vibe with your vibes! Reading your tags on my posts and vice versa feels like we're sitting down with some popcorn to talk shit (affectionate) about this beloved weewoo show.
Okay okay onto the ask - naturally I have some opinions, 90% of my headspace is the weewoo and 10% is nonsense like bills, groceries, my job, school applications, etc. I've got thoughts. So here we go:
I've started realizing this on my latest re-watch, and I just got to the season 3 finale, and as I was shoving my face full of Wendy's I thought to myself, whoa whoa whoa, this is the third finale of this show and the third time I have to see Buck all forlorn and woe is me bc another LI is leaving him. And everything snowballed after that. Let's go in order, and then we're gonna talk about other character's arcs as they manifest in the finale, and then hopefully I can pull this mess together at the end so it makes sense!
Let's preface these analyses by saying that typically season finales are reserved for revisiting the main storylines of characters, and in the case of 9-1-1 which focuses on the personal lives of the first responders, the main storylines revolve around those characters' families. Buck's main storyline is his search for meaningful connection and having something that he can call his own.
1x10: "A Whole New You"
Abby leaves Buck. That's what this boils down to in regards to the theme of this post. After Buck prepared himself to "step into it with her" and "keep her company there," Abby's mom passed away and relieved her of the last thing tethering her in place, resulting in her deciding to travel the world and rediscover herself. I think the title of the episode is hilarious as it relates to Buck and Abby, because it's pretty obvious in Abby's case but in the context of the next season we literally start to see the transition to a "whole new Buck." I hate speaking its name aloud, but Buck 2.0 anyone???
Why Abby leaves: she was afraid she would lose herself if she stayed
What Buck learns: he is capable of a monogamous relationship and actually he might prefer this to the alternative
2x18: "This Life We Choose"
Ali leaves Buck. Her mere existence in this episode shows the audience Buck is actively moving on from Abby. He is trying to make this whole meaningful connection thing work, which feels more authentic to him probably because Ali is already established in his life (sound like someone we know from season 4 anybody??? sorry I digress), but we know how this turns out.
Why Ali leaves: she couldn't handle the inherent danger and unpredictability of his job
What Buck learns: people leave, but you know what will always be there for him? His job. Let's project our entire self-worth onto that, then.
3x18: "What's Next?"
Abby leaves Buck (again, and this time for another man!). It's more like the continuation and finalization of the process she started in the season one finale, but absolutely this gets its own mention. Never mind that Tim said the train was literally a metaphor for Buck. Abby isn't walking off into the vague unknown with this one. She is about to marry a single father (cough cough) and that is the deliberate cut-off to her and Buck's relationship, which leaves him in a bit of a freefall as is obvious during the first bit of season 4 (hello Dr. Copeland, better late than never I suppose).
Why Abby leaves: she found someone who she can be her authentic self with, who she doesn't feel will make her backslide
What Buck learns: everybody walks away, he is always the one left behind, maybe the problem is himself.
4x14: "Survivors"
Eddie almost left Buck. The difference? Abby and Ali both made active choices to leave him. Eddie had to literally get gunned down in the street, through no choice of his own, in order to even be added into this parallel. Considering the culminating events of Buck's story arc throughout the years and especially the plotline we get in season four alone, this is huge, don't you think? I know the writers do, because they literally put up a huge neon sign with the final scene between Buck and Eddie like, "We know Buck always gets left behind at the end of each season but look at this! He isn't! In fact, it's the exact opposite!" and then we're forced to go insane ruminating on the meaning of these choices for an eternity during the hiatus.
This is already obscenely long, and I have some thoughts about other characters and how their main plotlines play out during the season finales, but I'll leave this here for now. Hope this gave you something!

How do you think the conversation with buck/chris is gonna go? I’m not that excited about the possibility of chris getting mad at buck being all ”you were supposed to protect him! I hate you!!” I know that would break buck. But really that sort of thing is something you can only say to a parent really—and we haven’t seen chris mad at buck before ever really, it might be good for the dynamic in some way? But more likely is probably buck staying very strong for chris, putting on a brave face and telling him that eddie will come back to him, he just needs to wait a little. And then when he leaves buck will start crying😭😭my heart, oh how I anticipate this final❤️
First of all, let me say that I agree with your assessment re: Buck crying after telling Christopher the bad news. I've seen the take floating around about Buck crying beforehand and having to pull himself together, but that leaves me with so many questions, honestly - the main one being HOW DID HE GET IN THERE? DID HE USE A KEY? WHY WOULD HE GO INTO CHRISTOPHER'S ROOM? My opinion as of this moment is that Buck is going to visit Christopher after cleaning himself up and probably be met by Carla at the door? (Unless Tim really wants to fuck with us and have Abuela already there because she knows...) Then, Chris is gonna be all "Hey, Buck!", his typical sunshine self. Buck forces a smile because it's Christopher. I've had it in my head that Chris will ask "Where's Dad?" calmly at first. Doesn't think anything weird is going on. But when Buck fails to answer him (because how the fuck does he explain this to a kid? And it's not just any kid. This is Eddie's kid. This is Buck's kid.) he asks again, with a bit more concern. Buck has to keep his composure, "Your dad's not coming home tonight." There's two ways they can go with this, and I guess it depends on what Buck knows about Eddie's status by that point? Either Buck tells Chris that his dad was hurt at work, but the doctors are helping him and he'll be back home as soon as possible, OR Buck has to be more specific with the details, has to tell Chris something bad happened to Eddie and the doctors are working very hard to bring him back to Chris. I cannot picture Chris yelling at Buck? I know that's just a fandom theory right now, but I'm just... Christopher Diaz? Yelling at His Buck? Nah. We can't have that. I can see Chris asking Buck "You're not going anywhere, right?" as a nod to Buck's words for Chris in 4.08. I *think* that whoever's in the house with them will have Christopher leave the room for a moment. Who knows. Maybe Buck's phone rings. Maybe they know Buck needs a minute to himself. Then he breaks down because he's finally being hit with the realization that he... nearly lost Eddie? Might still lose Eddie? (Again, depends on what Buck has been told once the scene occurs.) I will end up being wrong about 99.9% of the way their interaction plays out, and that's okay because I will be a sobbing mess on the floor regardless! The Buckley-Diaz boys have a hold on my heart.

Is he talking to Taylor here? I don't think so. My guess is that Taylor's not even there yet. I feel like this scene is in Bobby and Athena's house. They probably have a small gathering there to celebrate the success of their call. My theory about the "great" line is, Eddie comes to Buck to where he's standing and invited him to his house to finally meet Ana for dinner or whatever. Buck of course agree and he felt like uncomfortable ( I have no proof to back up his discomfort but the way how he looks when he said "great" doesn't look or sound like he's excited or happy) then Eddie is glad Buck agrees and leave him to meet the other people in the area. That moment is when he said "great" and then the doorbell rings signaling Taylor's arrival.
Tumblr media
Then here it is, Buck and Taylor finally talking and even said they make a great team.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But what makes Eddie decides to finally introduce Buck to Ana after more than 3 months of dating?
Again, my theory about this came from a pattern of events that happened from the previous episodes. Eddie's impulsive decisions has something to do with Buck's actions. Here's why.
Taylor Kelly was first introduced in 2x06 Dosed episode. Buck clearly show interest on Taylor after rescuing her on that chopper. It was also clear he show his interest when Taylor visited the firehouse for a documentary. Everybody was there to witness, including Eddie.
Shannon was first introduced in 2x07 Haunted episode through Carla's insistence. Carla talked sense to Eddie that Christopher needs his mother though Eddie made it pretty clear he doesn't want Shannon back in his life but because of Carla and the school, he finally gave in and invited Shan to his house. After the argument, he considered reconciling with his wife after the school visit and kissed her. Though hesitant at first, he kissed her again like kissing all his pain away.
Buck jumps back to the dating scene in 2x08 Buck Actually episode. He had sex with Taylor in a public restroom. He even went as far as talking about it to the 118 especially with Bobby. Eddie was there and he heard it. Also, during the episode, Ali's been calling Buck but was hesitant at first. Closing the episode, he finally agreed to meet Ali in a shop. That's when they started dating.
It is now known to everyone that Buck is dating Ali. This is when Eddie finally had sex with his wife in 2x10 Merry Ex-mas episode. After having sex and arguments, Eddie invited Buck instead to join him and Christopher to visit Santa. Buck loves to cry about the military surprised their family videos, Eddie realizes that he fully needs Shannon for Christopher.
Buck and Ali's relationship continues to grow (but there wasn't any build up) Buck finally found an apartment for himself so Ali can stay whenever she wants. Eddie and Shannon's relationship reconciled but it feels like they're both walking on eggshells. The only push that Eddie needs is that when Shannon though she's pregnant but was false alarm. She felt like Eddie looked at her as Chris' mom but not his wife anymore and so she wanted file a divorce and eventually died in 2x17 Careful what you wish for episode.
In 2x18, Ali left Buck. She loves him yes, but she can't handle Buck's job anymore after seeing him almost died.
Season 3 both Buck and Eddie are single. Hmm suspicious.
In Season 4 (LS's crossover episode) Buck was caught staring to Marjan by Hen and Eddie confirmed it by saying "you're staring" looking disappointed. Disappointed Eddie joins Judd, Paul and Marjan instead of his partner. He was intrigued why Buck was staring at her and decides to follows her on Insta. He talks about Buck helping him build the skateboard (It was Buck's idea anyway) and not-so defending him that he's harmless but mostly. It was bordering defending but clearing him while staring at Marjan to get a reaction from her. And later on asked her to follow back Buck in Insta. A mission accomplished for Eddie.
In 4x06, Buck announced the software update to Buck 3.0 - Kinder and Gentler version of himself. It was also his declaration of moving on from the past and starts to look for his future because he was tired of looking behind his shoulder. Eddie processed all the new information and even said that Buck should allow to give himself some time to process. An advice that he's been doing to himself, allowing some time to mourn more. STUCK. Eddie met Ana again. He talked about it to Buck but nothing came out of their conversation. He almost forgot about it when Buck's bratty attitude cornered him in front of his team mates about Ana's love languages (Like as if Eddie knows, right?) Hen, Chim and Bobby interrogates him about her. It was then implied that Eddie has no plans of dating Ana but it was Bobby that pushed him to go back out there to find something real. So Eddie dates Ana in an episode called JINX.
After learning Eddie's date (an implied scenario) Buck let himself back to the market as well in 4x07 and dated Veronica. It ended up in a disaster. He talks about it to Eddie even if the date didn't end well. Information is key.
After learning of Buck's back to dating again, Eddie dates Ana again, in her house. A Math date which he set an alarm for. Eddie did even say she's a terrible Math teacher but a great cook and an amazing woman. Just like a female version of someone. Buck is terrible at Math, can cook and obviously an amazing guy. Buck asked Eddie how was the date and he answered without looking his eye that she taught her MATH. It was an intentional slap to Buck's lack of Math knowledge. Why mention Math? I will never understand. Also, Taylor Kelly is back again. Covering at the same time the 118 attending the call. Buck was with Taylor most of the 6-hour waiting call while the 118 we're almost together. An implication that everyone knows including Eddie that Buck is with Taylor talking to her the whole damn time. So that night an impulse decision was made, he tells Chris that he's seeing someone. Christopher didn't take the news right and went straight to Buck's. Since they didn't show the scene where Eddie picks Chris to Buck's house where most probably he learned that Buck just came from a double date with Taylor and Albert with Veronica, and after learning Taylor called Buck to ask for a miracle, another impulse decision Eddie has made, he let Ana introduce her to his son too soon..
While Buck and Taylor continues to be friends, Eddie and Ana's relationship continues after 3 months of dating as seen by the time jump in 4x10 Parenthood episode.
As you can see, everything that Buck does first, it affects Eddie... In a very SUBTLE WAY. Another perfect example was the lawsuit. Buck's lawyer told Buck to stop communicating to the 118 (including Eddie) until the arbitration. The none contact triggered Eddie's past from Shannon. It was an implication that he put Buck in Shannon's position. The none contact has seen Eddie in an instant downward spiral. His impulsive decisions and constipated emotions led him to jail and almost kill someone in an underground fight club. This is the same person who will do everything for his SON, fyi.
So what I'm trying to say again here is, after the episodes 4x11 and 4x12 where most probably a Buck/Taylor centric episodes, Eddie's gonna make an impulse decision again and invite Buck to finally meet Ana to his house. And Buck, most probably bring Taylor with him. We'll see about that.

love, don’t let me go | 2.2k words | buddie | established relationship, emotional hurt/comfort, fluff | ao3
written for Eddie Diaz Week 2021 | Day 4: “I don’t deserve this.” + guilt
.
The firehouse is silent. They’re halfway through a 24-hour shift but it’s been rather calm. Not many calls, only a small house fire, a guy locking himself inside his own car and a fender bender. Eddie doesn't like it. Not the city being relatively good and safe, of course, but the calm. The silence that engulfs the station is driving him mad. It gives him too much time to think and Eddie doesn’t like the kind of thoughts that are swarming his head lately.
For a moment he considers heading to the bunk room but he quickly dismisses it. He won’t be able to sleep anyway and he doesn’t want to disturb anyone. A while ago he sent Buck there so he could get some rest. They were lounging on the couch, watching some late-night history documentary with a crazy amount of conspiracy theories in it. It didn’t take long for Buck to start drifting off. His head slid down Eddie’s shoulder, arms getting looser around his waist. Knowing that if he fell asleep like this, he’d be all stiff and cranky later, Eddie nudged him awake and sent him to bed. He had to promise he’d join and get some rest himself before Buck finally agreed to go, pressing a kiss to Eddie’s lips and walking away with a loud yawn. Eddie intended to keep the promise but… not now.
With a sigh, Eddie gets up from the couch, not even realising that the documentary has ended a while ago. Trying to find himself something to do, he wanders around the empty loft. He opens the fridge, even though he’s not hungry. He empties the dishwasher as quietly as he can and then loads the remaining dirty plates inside. He wipes the counters. Then he puts the notes Hen left on the table into a neat pile, mindful that all the sticky notes stay in their places. Seeing that there’s not much to do here anymore, he considers going downstairs. Maybe he could exercise for a bit. It should do the trick to help clear his mind and maybe tire him enough so he can get some sleep.
Eddie drags his hand across his face in a frustrated gesture. Before he can do anything, he hears a voice coming from behind.
“You okay, Eddie?”
Taking a slow breath, Eddie turns around to face Bobby. He hopes that his face doesn’t show too many of the emotions rumbling in his head. It’s a futile hope, according to Buck. He always makes fun of Eddie for having the most expressive face he’s ever seen. The thought almost puts a smile on Eddie’s face.
“Yeah, I’m good, Cap,” Eddie says.
Bobby’s watchful eyes don’t leave Eddie but there’s worry written all over his face when he asks, “You sure? You seem a bit… restless. And you’ve been a bit distant for the past few days.”
Eddie sighs. It’s true. He just hoped he could deal with it quickly enough so that nobody would point it out. When they’re on a call, Eddie always stays focused on the job, but when they’re all just hanging around Eddie gets too caught up in his own head to laugh at the jokes or bite back at the mocking. Buck has been bugging him about it every day, because of course he realised. He was the first one to. But how can Eddie tell him when it’s all Buck’s fault?
No, he corrects himself. It’s not Buck’s fault. He has done absolutely nothing wrong and Eddie doesn’t have the right to look at it that way. Everything that is happening, is because of him.
“No, it’s—,” Eddie starts, trying to clear his head. “Just a bit tired. Got some things on my mind. That’s all.”
Not looking entirely convinced, Bobby nods and slowly moves closer to the table. Eddie’s fingers are wrapped around the back of the chair in front of him but he doesn’t sit when Bobby does so across from him. But he doesn’t run away, either.
“Something’s up with Christopher?” Bobby prods gently and when Eddie shakes his head, he carefully adds, “With Buck?”
Eddie clenches his jaw. It’s just a small gesture, but Bobby still notices. “You guys had a fight?”
“No, it’s not—,” Eddie says and feels very tired all of sudden. The legs scrape loudly against the floor as Eddie pulls at the chair and drops down on it. “It’s great. Buck’s great. I’m— really happy with him.”
“But?”
“But that’s the problem,” Eddie shakes his head with a sad smile. “I’m not sure if we should— If I should— Maybe it wasn’t a good idea.”
A non-committal hum leaves Bobby’s mouth as he waits for Eddie to continue. When he doesn’t, Bobby asks, “Why? He makes you happy. I can clearly see that you make him happy. And you’ve mentioned that Christopher took it more than well. So what happened?”
Eddie bites at his upper lip, trying to gather his thoughts and keep his emotions at bay. It wasn’t the kind of conversation he wanted to have right now. Or ever, probably. But Bobby was looking at him with this soft, worried look and Eddie felt like maybe it could lessen the knot that has been slowly tightening in his stomach for weeks. Maybe from the very moment he first kissed Buck, in the dim light of his own living room when they were watching some stupid cartoon, Buck’s eyes bright and happy as he looked down at Christopher, asleep and curled tightly against Buck’s side. It didn’t change that much between them, the kiss. But at the same time, it changed everything and Eddie felt like he was standing on top of a mountain. He wanted to admire the beautiful view but kept his eyes firmly on the ground, to make sure he won’t trip and fall into the precipice.
“Nothing. Not yet, at least,” Eddie says and then words start falling out of his mouth before he can stop them. “But Shannon made me happy, too. And she was happy with me. Before I messed it all up and ran away and she left because she didn’t know what else to do. There are so many things,” Eddie says slowly through gritted teeth, “that I’ve messed up in my life. I can’t mess this up. I can’t lose Buck.”
“Who said you’re gonna lose him?”
“I’ve been a bad son, a horrible father and even worse husband. I’ve done so many things that I regret now but can’t fix. Why would I be a good boyfriend to Buck?” Eddie looks at Bobby but quickly averts his gaze as he feels his eyes burning. “And Buck is— He’s good. He loves Christopher endlessly and Christopher loves him just as much. He’s so caring and thoughtful and there’s still so much kindness in him. I admire him and I can’t believe he— He’s always there to catch me when I need it and he’s— He’s everything. And I don’t deserve this. I don’t deserve him.”
If Eddie wasn’t trying so hard to keep himself together, he would probably feel embarrassed for laying his heart out for his captain like this. He wasn’t one for speeches or talking about feelings. But he knew Bobby would understand. Bobby knew Buck. Bobby, who was more of a father to Buck that his real father was, knew that Buck was a good person, one of the best. He knew that he deserved everything good from the world. And Eddie couldn’t give him that.
“Eddie,” Bobby’s voice is soft when he leans across the table, trying to catch Eddie’s eyes. He doesn’t continue, so eventually Eddie looks up at him. “You’re a good person. You’re so much more than the mistakes you’ve made in the past. They don’t define who you are. You’ve made a choice. A conscious choice to change, to try again, to keep going, and you’ve done all the hard work and put in effort to do this. And that’s what matters. You deserve to be happy, Eddie.”
Looking away, Eddie shakes his head and bites the inside of his cheek. “But what if it doesn’t work out? Again? I don’t know what I’d do without him. And I was perfectly happy with being just his friend. So maybe we should just… try to fix it and go back to where we were before it’s too late. Maybe we should—” he stops, not able to voice the thought that has been haunting him for the past week.
“There’s no reason for fixing something that’s not broken, Eddie,” Bobby says. “I’m pretty sure Buck doesn’t want to lose you, either. You mean too much to each other to just give up. No matter what life throws your way, I know you two can figure it out. You said you regretted running away before. So don’t. Stay and let yourself be happy. You can’t base your life on what if’s.”
It all makes sense. Eddie knows it does but it’s so hard to believe sometimes. There’s no doubt about his feelings for Buck. He has been in love with him before he even knew how to call the sense of warmth and peace that overtook him every time Buck was around. And he hasn’t doubted Buck’s feelings for a second, either. And Eddie knows that there’s nothing in the world that would make him happier than going through life with Buck by his side, than making a place for him in Eddie’s family. As if he wasn’t part of it the second he appeared in his and Christopher’s life. The fear that’s been looming over his head, the guilt that’s been haunting him didn’t let him see all of this.
“You deserve every good thing in your life. Even when it’s hard to accept it. Especially if it is.” Bobby’s hand is heavy when it lands on Eddie’s shoulder, giving him a comforting squeeze.
Eddie only nods, trying to swallow the lump in his throat. He hopes that Bobby can see the gratefulness he wants to express. And judging by the warm smile on his captain’s face, he can.
“...Eddie?”
They both look up, startled by the noise. Buck is standing at the top of the stairs, hesitant. His hair is mussed from sleep and he looks between the two of them with a worried expression.
Turning back to Eddie, Bobby gives his shoulder one more squeeze and after getting a shaky smile in response, he gets up. On his way downstairs, he passes Buck, giving him a pat on the shoulder and a smile and then he’s gone. For a moment, Buck just stands there, looking after Bobby with a confused frown. Then he unfreezes and rushes towards Eddie.
“Eddie, are you—,” Buck starts, pulling up a chair for himself and he sits, turning his whole body towards Eddie. “Is everything okay?”
Eddie nods, trying to smile and stop the tears at the same time. They are not the same, miserable tears that welled up in his eyes not-so-long ago. They are happy tears because Eddie is the happiest man alive. But Buck doesn’t know this. And so the worried wrinkle on his forehead only deepens as he leans closer to Eddie, taking his hand into his.
“But you’re— Did something happen? I’m freaking out, Eds, just talk to me, please.”
Instead of doing that, Eddie just laughs wetly and leans forward to press a soft kiss to Buck’s lips.
“Everything is great, I promise,” Eddie says, smiling. His hands cup Buck’s face as he kisses him again. “You make me so happy, Buck. I love you so much.”
“And… that’s what you’ve been talking with Bobby about?” Buck raises an eyebrow and the worry is slowly replaced by a small smile.
“Basically,” Eddie chuckles. “I just needed some sense talked into me.”
Buck hums, clearly curious but he doesn’t ask. “Well, Bobby’s good at that. And I’m happy with the conclusions you guys have made. I love you too, in case you were wondering.”
God, Eddie can’t believe he considered leaving this wonderful man, considered walking out of the best thing in his life. It feels so stupid now.
“You couldn’t sleep?” Eddie asks, brushing his thumb across Buck’s cheek.
“I know you lied and didn’t intend to get any rest unless I dragged you downstairs,” Buck raises an eyebrow at him.
Eddie makes a shocked face, “Did I ever lie to you? Name one time I lied to you.”
“You said you liked the casserole I made last week and I saw you giving half of your serving to Christopher,” Buck points out.
“Green beans, Buck! You know I don’t like green beans!”
When Buck shakes his head at him, the fondness and love written all over his face as he leans for another kiss, Eddie feels the knot in his stomach disappearing completely. Finally, he can see that this happiness is not something he should or could ever leave behind. He still has his fears and worries, they won't just disappear like that. But if there's one thing that he and Buck know is that you have to fight for the things you love. No matter how hard it might be. And this thing they have is way too important to give up on.

Why I Think Albert Doesn't Die in 4B: A Meta Post
Maybe this is me reaching or some really wishful thinking, but i don't think albert is the one who dies, though i think he does get seriously injured (explanation below the cut so hear me out lol)
Based on scenes from 3b, 4a, the 4b promos, and some interviews done after 4x08 about 4x09.
In multiple interviews (one example below ⬇), Tim has stressed that there is going to be a divide between Bobby and Athena because he feels that she's too independent and won't let him in when she has issues. 4b is being set up to build off of last season's attack at the storage unit. Athena has made peace with the attack, so it will take something (encountering the attacker, being trapped while looking for a suspect, a storage unit, or experiencing other trauma) to act as the catalyst to trigger her into needing Bobby's help but refusing to ask. Albert dying will in no way drive or affect this plot line and will only really heavily affect Chimney, Maddie, and Buck and maybe Chris and Eddie.
Tumblr media
Tim did a different interview where he said that multiple characters will be in life or death situations ⬇
Tumblr media
As far as we know from the promo Hen, Buck, Bobby, Athena, May, Eddie, and Chimney are working the crash and Maddie is shown at work going into labor or having false contractions. None are likely contenders for a life or death situation, which leaves the side characters. Since this involves a massive pile-up, and we already know that Albert is in one car, that leaves three others.
The scenario I see best playing out in term of writing and setting up 4b and going into season 5 is this:
Albert gets horribly injured in the crash and has a long recovery. (This plays into 4a when Taylor said Buck was selfish and has no real friends because he doesn't know how to treat a friend.) If Albert gets injured and has a long recovery, he has 2 options for care. He either moves back in with Madney (but they have their hands full with the baby) or he stays with Buck, who has had to recover from a serious injury before. By staying with Buck, he learns how to really care for a friend unselfishly (tho we're gonna ignore the Buddie friendship for a minute bc the writers did). This also gives them the opportunity to set Albert and Buck up in a friendship so Buck can have friends outside the 118.
OR Albert goes into a coma because the writers are playing with a lot of characters right now and I don't think they know what to do with Albert and how to give him enough screen time for anything meaningful to happen. This way, they can revisit his arc in the future. Also, imagine Chimney and Maddie getting ready to take their daughter home and stopping by Albert's room to introduce their baby to her Uncle Albert 😭 Putting Albert in a coma or giving him a long recovery time is something that could be revisited at the end of the season easily.
I think the 3 others in jeopardy are in one car and I think it is Michael, David, and Harry after going to dinner one night or something and I think they are at the center of the crash.
I think the person who dies is Michael or David, mainly because of this interview ⬇
Tumblr media
First, they've brought in David, but like Albert's storyline, they can't fit him in enough for it to really be meaningful. We see them meet towards the end of season 3 and by season 4 they have quarantined together (even though David is on the front lines) and are now living together. Most of their story occurs off screen. The only reason we even saw Michael and David in most of 4a was because it was a storyline attached to Athena and Bobby. Killing off David is less characters to deal with and would affect Bobby and Athena, but not to a degree I would see it driving a wedge in their own relationship. It would affect Michael and encourage him to complete his bucket list he referenced in 4a but it wouldn't have an impact on the whole 118.
Both Bobby and Athena are really close with Michael, though I'm gonna focus on Bobby for a minute. If Michael dies suddenly, that "lighthearted and hilarious" relationship "quickly turns on a dime" and suddenly it "ends up being quite emotional" because Bobby is dealing with losing a friend. This could also dredge up those feelings of having lost his family in a fire and not being able to save them because Michael is now part of Bobby's family. Later in the season, it would be easy to revisit if Harry is mad that his step dad and dad's boyfriend weren't able to save his dad. Bobby would be dealing with his feelings of losing a friend while trying to help Athena (who doesn't want help) deal with the loss of her ex husband.
Shifting the focus to Athena, Michael dying would absolutely devastate Athena. They were married for nearly 2 decades and he is still a close friend and confidante. Losing her ex husband at the site of a crash she responded to would be traumatic. And if you compound that with her unresolved trauma from the attack, now you've got Athena trying to deal with everything on her own and not asking for help. Now Bobby gets mad/sad/distanced because Athena won't ask for help and he needs his own support from her. And maybe she is giving that support but she won't let him reciprocate it and now you have a recipe for anger and unresolved grief that begins to drive them apart.
Focusing on May for a moment, she became an operator because she wanted to make sure Athena was never alone in the field. Though I can't imagine her taking the call for Michael because he is on the line when Albert is injured, her dad dying in a crash she responded to would likely drive her out of the field and into college or another path (1 less character to have around to try to give screen time.)
Michael's death was also foreshadowed in 4a when Athena is concerned he gets the telescope and is spying on neighbors. He talks about having a bucket list that he never got to do because the pandemic forced him into isolation. He also talked about how his only concern during the cancer was preparing his kids for losing him.
Michael's plot is stagnant. He is happy and living with his boyfriend and son. He's cancer free. His whole plot is tied up in a nice bow where they could easily kill him off and the only loose threads to deal with on screen are his family members and friends grieving his loss. This would impact the 118 as a whole.
Honestly, I thought they were going to kill off Michael when he first got cancer and he decided to stop treatments but they bad May talk to him and convince him to go through with the treatments.
Now, by killing off Michael, it is 2 less stories they have to tell, and it is less they'll have to include storylines for Harry as much as they were because he was linked to Michael's storyline. And if they have May decide to leave the field to pursue other dreams or complete her dad's bucket list for him, that is 4 less storylines where they can now focus on the Madney baby, Bathena's relationship, introducing friends for Buck (they mentioned brining back Taylor), focus on ending Eddie/Ana, and establishing Albert as a character (based on a quote from the above article, I think Albert's storyline is going to parallel Buck's 1.0 to 2.0 phase ➡ "If you think about how we ended season 2, Buck being smashed by the firetruck. We knew he was going to survive... I would expect something similar here.")
Referring back to that first article, where it says "Then look for a significant source of agitation for the entire 118."
At this point, Michael would have passed and Bobby and Athena are now having marital problems AKA mom and dad are fighting.
Hen would be stuck in the middle because she is good friends with both Bobby and Athena. She is also facing her own loss of Nia being returned to her birth mom and doesn't have time for their marital problems but still tries to help. She can also pull from her experiences from the season 1 cheating storyline to tell them to communicate or it'll ruin their relationship (yes i too hate that storyline but it would work here)
Buck would likely (nonverbally) side with Bobby, but he sees them both as parental figures, so he gets stuck in the middle like a middle child who is just going with the flow. This would also parallel the Buck Begins storyline where Buck feels caught in the middle after his parents face a loss.
Chimney is raising a baby and (if this theory is right) worrying about Albert in a coma or recovering from a massive injury. He has no time for their marital problems but still lets Bobby confide in him and gives advice (maybe this is just cause i wanna see the bobby/chim friendship we used to get in s1)
Eddie sides with Bobby but he thinks the whole argument is dumb. He can also offer advice to Bobby based on his own experience, but it's going to be something about communication, at which point Bobby will start ripping his hair out because why won't she just tell me her problems and let me help?
Lastly, when have we ever known the show to go ahead and give a major spoiler of the episode 2 weeks in advance? They let us speculate about Daniel for like 8 months and imo it wasn't as big of a deal as they made it out to be. It seems more likely to me that they offered the promo to get the viewers with a twist ending when the show comes back.
Feel free to share your thoughts if you made it this far lol
TL;DR Based on the interviews Tim has done, Albert dying would have little impact on the 118 as a whole, but Michael dying would offer exactly what they need to set up season 5 and finish 4b.

when i’m walking in my sleep
anonymous asked:
Hii, i love your writing, just finished your new buddie fic. Loved it! If you have inspiration for a storyline like the following i would be so happy to read: Eddie taking care of Buck after the screw removing surgery.
I deleted the original post due to it not showing up in the tags, so sorry if you didn’t see it, anon! But here it is again :)
trigger warnings for this: use of painkillers even though taken as prescribed, mention of an unspecified nightmare, and to be safe emetophobia as it’s mentioned
Eddie has always had the innate need to care for the ones he loves and the ones who need it. When he was five, he tried his hardest alongside his sisters to save an injured squirrel that ended up at their doorstep. He’d take care of his parents when either one of them was sick as he grew up. The need to help everyone never simmered, only grew when he joined the Army, boiled over when Christopher was born. Firefighting was the perfect job for Eddie, he got to feed his desire to help those in need and find the camaraderie within his team that he’d been missing since his Army days.
Helping people helps him, so he really can’t stop himself from jumping at the opportunity to take Buck home after he gets his screws out when everyone else’s schedules are too busy. He cares about Buck a lot -- maybe too much and not in the way someone cares about their best friend -- so making sure he’s okay and comfortable after a surgery he knows Buck was scared shitless for, it’s not a big deal for Eddie.
He finds that maybe he’s a little in over his head when Buck greets him with a loopy smile. He’s just a tiny bit in love with Evan Buckley, and having dealt with post-surgery Buck before, Eddie is sure his heart might burst with every zany grin and stage-whispered expression of appreciation.
Buck’s surgeon, who Eddie has met more times than one should have, strolls into the dimly lit recovery room with an amused smile. “Good to see you awake.”
Buck snickers. “You say that every time, Doc. Soon you’re going to have to stop acting surprised that I’m invincible.”
Eddie can’t tell if what Buck just said makes sense, a twenty-four hour shift with very little sleep does things to your common sense, but his doctor seems like he’s heard it before.
His doctor shakes his head, albeit fondly, as if it’s something he expects but can’t believe he’s hearing. “How many times am I going to have to warn you that you’re not invincible before you stop ending up in my OR?” Eddie suspects every time. “Hopefully, there won’t be a next surgery for you Mr. Buckley. The screws are out, everything should be smooth sailing after that, unless you decide to test that invincibility theory.”
Eddie can’t hold back the laugh as Buck’s face displays his disbelief. “I may be stupid, doc, but I’m no idiot.”
His doctor turns to face Eddie as he facepalms. “I wish you all the luck and patience in the world taking care of this one.” He jests.
“You know I’m always gonna need it, Doc.” Eddie grins. “There anything I should watch out for or steer clear of with him?”
“You know, the usual; don’t let him walk without his crutches, make sure he eats before he takes his next dose of pain medicine we’re sending home with him, and keep him off the leg as much as possible. Elevate it, ice it if the pain gets too much, spare some time for your own sanity.”
Buck grumbles. “I’m not that bad, right? Tell him, Eds.”
“My mom taught me to always tell the truth.” Eddie teases but relents when the pout Buck gives goes straight to his heart. “Fine. You’re a joy to be around, Evan Buckley.”
“You heard him, Doc! I’m a joy to be around!”
“Never said you weren’t, Buck, just saying your joy is here more than either of us would like.” He smirks. “Alright, alright, I’m sure Eddie wants to get out of here as much as you do so you’re free to go. Everything looks fine post-surgery and as long as you take correct care, it’ll stay fine. You know to call me if there’s an infection or it takes longer to heal than it should, you know the drill. I will see you in six weeks, Buck. Please not a second sooner?”
Buck sends him a sloppy thumbs up and thanks him, says he can’t promise anything but he’ll try his best and Eddie doesn’t want to think about waiting through another one of his surgeries. He’s fine with the aftercare, but waiting to see if Buck came out of each surgery alive is something similar to hell, he’s sure.
When the doctor leaves, Buck looks Eddie’s way. “Eddddieeeeee, my man, a little help?”
Eddie shakes his head and grabs the bag of Buck’s clothes before going to help Buck sit up on the side of the stretcher he was on.
Buck giggles. “My hospital gown is open in the back so don’t look. My ass isn’t really my best feature.”
Well that’s a straight up lie.
“Aw, Eds, thank you. Your butt’s pretty great too.” Buck grins like the compliment means the world to him. The implied compliment that Eddie definitely did not mean to say aloud.
The only thing that keeps him from hiding himself in embarrassment is that Buck is as high as a kite on his painkillers and most likely won’t remember even leaving the hospital.
He prays the blush doesn’t show on his face as he helps Buck into his basketball shorts. He couldn’t tell you why he gets flustered every time he had to help Buck this way. They were adults, it wasn’t anything domestic, really, just… intimate. He’d help whenever and whatever way Buck needed, because if Eddie Diaz was anything, he wasn’t shy. He was never uncomfortable. Just flustered beyond belief.
Buck falls back onto the stretcher dramatically after he’s got his shorts on, taking Eddie down with him. He’s laughing hysterically as he wraps his arms around Eddie’s body in a side hug.
“Hey, Eddie?” He looks up at him. “You’re strong. Can you carry me to your truck?”
Eddie lets out a surprised laugh. “I don’t think so, buddy. I can ask for a wheelchair?”
Buck snorts. “Being wheeled out is just embarrassing, man,”
“And being carried out isn’t?”
He responds with a whine. “You don’t have to be smart all the time, you know? My bones feel like they’ve been replaced by jelly, you won’t even try?”
Eddie fondly rolls his eyes. “You can lean on me, okay? I don’t have to carry you to not let you fall, Buck, I’ve got you.”
“You’ve got me?”
“Yeah, I’ve got you. Now, up you go.”
By the time Buck is settled in Eddie’s living room, foot elevated under a pillow on the coffee table and more blankets than Buck could ever need by his side, they’re both exhausted. Eddie plops down next to Buck on the couch and doesn’t question it when he leans his head on Eddie’s chest.
Eddie raises an eyebrow when Buck moans. “You alright?”
“I don’t wanna throw up.” He whines. “Make it go away.”
“You’re nauseous?” Eddie asks, already standing to get the trashcan from his bathroom for him but is stopped by Buck. “I’ll be right back, just gonna get you the trashcan just in case.”
Eddie has always hated pain medicine. He hates not having any sense of control of what he’s saying if he’s going to remember it the next day, he hates the nausea that comes with, and he hates that every time, without fail, it makes Buck cry.
His lip is quivering as he looks up at Eddie, and it’s just then that Eddie realizes how actually gone he was for Evan Buckley.
“Don’t leave me.” Eddie probably would have teased him if Buck had been whining but he wasn’t. There was real fear in his voice, like Eddie would leave out the bathroom window or something.
“So you’re not nauseous anymore?” He goes with instead, eyebrow raised and arms crossed. He remembers Buck calling it the dad stance, but if it gets Buck to let go of his shirt so he can grab something to stop him from vomiting on his floor, he’ll use it.
Buck shakes his head, stopping abruptly as he pales.
Eddie snorts. “Don’t lie to me ever again.” He reaches for Buck’s face, cupping his jaw in his hand and rubbing his thumb across his cheek. “Let me at least get you a bowl. You’ll be able to see me better in the kitchen.”
Buck finally lets go of the grip on Eddie’s shirt and turns to watch Eddie walk away. Eddie hates himself for the way he subconsciously walks to maybe impress Buck. Thanks to the painkillers, he knows that Buck thinks his ass is nice, he can feel Buck’s eyes watching the back of him, and Eddie prays that Buck is at least the slightest bit interested in him.
What is he thinking? There’s no way Buck could be interested. They’re best friends, that’s all they are, it doesn’t matter how stupidly and pathetically in love Eddie is.
Buck is half asleep by the time Eddie is back with a bowl that shouldn’t be missed.
The second Eddie sits down next to him and hands Buck the bowl, he holds it to his chest and goddamnit why is this so adorable?
“I doubt you’ll make it through the first minutes of it, let alone an episode, but you down to watch Avatar?”
Buck smiles tiredly, eyes refusing to open. “As long as you’re talking about The Last Airbender and not the creepy movie.”
Eddie chuckles. “You think Avatar is creepy?”
“You don’t?” Buck raises an eyebrow, still not opening his eyes, and gives Eddie a look that says he’s shocked no one else feels the same. “I read somewhere there’s a new one coming out in 2021, like, why?”
Eddie snickers. “I can kind of understand your fear of Child’s Play because it’s supposed to be horror, but c’mon, Avatar? I cried, if I remember correctly.”
Buck gasps. “Child’s Play is horror, thank you very much, and terrifying. End of discussion. Put on The Last Airbender so I can stop thinking about that thing.”
“That thing has a name, Buck. Chucky. He’s your friend ‘til the end.” Eddie teases but opens Netflix on his TV, quickly selecting from his Keep Watching list.
Buck doesn’t say anything after that and Eddie assumes he’s asleep, until Buck mumbles something.
“What was that?”
“Would you stop being my friend if you knew I was in love with you?” Eddie hears him loud and clear this time but he’s stunned at what comes from his best friend, disbelief that he even heard him correctly.
“Come again?”
When Eddie doesn’t get a response, he turns and finds that Buck fell asleep right after he gives him a heart attack.
Fantastic. Fan-fucking-tastic. Though he thinks he heard Buck loud and clear, it can’t be right. He dreamed of Buck reciprocating his feelings many times before, but that’s all Eddie could ever believe it was. Dreams. He hadn’t even known Buck was interested in men, let alone interested in him.
Eddie doesn’t know how long he’s in his head for, but when he notices the sweat glistening on Buck’s forehead, none of it matters. He places the back of his hand on Buck’s forehead, fearing a fever due to an infection or flu, but he doesn’t have a fever.
Then Buck jolts and suddenly Eddie knows what’s going on. It’s not the first time he’s seen Buck in the middle of a nightmare, it’s not his first time dealing with nightmares, either, so he knows what to do.
He distances himself from Buck as far as he can and still is able to shake him. He knows from personal experience to never stay close when waking someone from a nightmare, the black eye he’d accidentally given Buck one night being proof.
“Hey, Buck, you gotta wake up, buddy.” He shakes his shoulder lightly. “It’s just a nightmare, you’re not there.”
When Buck doesn’t wake up after a third try, Eddie tries a different tactic and scoots a little closer, grabbing Buck’s shoulder and shaking heavier than before. “Evan, Evan, wake up!”
Buck jolts awake, Bobby’s name on the tip of his tongue, swallowed by a scream. He can’t catch his breath, Eddie can tell he hasn’t fully grasped that wherever he just was in his nightmare was long gone and that he’s safe so he does everything he can to clear that fog.
He takes Buck’s shaking hand in his own and squeezes. “Hey, Evan, you’re at my place, on my couch, nowhere near any danger. You’re safe, okay?”
He can practically see the fog clear from his mind, taking in his surroundings and squeezes Eddie’s hand in his. “Eddie?”
“Yeah, man, I’m here. Feeling calmer?”
Before Buck can respond, he winces and muffles a scream of pain by biting on his lip. Eddie jumps into action as Buck grabs onto the bottom of his cast tightly, as to squeeze out the agony he was feeling.
Eddie checks the time. “You’re due for your next dose of your painkiller at least.”
But Buck isn’t listening to him. He’s too focused on the pain that Eddie can only now vaguely remember after getting the bullet removed from his shoulder. Before long, Eddie realizes Buck is mumbling something in between choked sobs and muffled screams of agony.
“Evan,” He tries to use his name again in hopes it’ll get him to focus on Eddie and not the pain.
Buck’s face is twisted in pain when he finally looks at Eddie and not for the time, he wishes he could take Buck’s pain away.
“I hate Freddie Costas. I hate him so much.” He sobs freely, still holding his bad leg like it’s a matter of life or death. “Fuck, it hurts.”
Eddie stands. “I’m gonna get your pain pills and an ice pack.”
Buck gulps the pill down with no water and Eddie has to stop himself from finding that oddly one of the most attractive things he’s seen Buck do. He also holds back a cringe, never one for taking pills in any way.
As Eddie unwraps the beginnings of Buck’s cast, Buck starts to calm, his tears slow, his body relaxes against Eddie’s side.
“I’m sorry,” He whispers.
“Don’t be. Trust me when I say I get it.” He looks Buck directly in the eyes. “Never feel sorry about feeling things.”
He doesn’t ask if he wants to talk about it. He knows Buck will talk about it if or when he wanted so it ends up being a useless question.
It’s quiet again after that. The only sounds that could be heard around Eddie’s was their breathing and the air conditioner running. Avatar is paused on the TV and Eddie doesn’t make any move to unpause it.
Then Eddie is in his head again.
If he heard right, why would Buck be into him? He wants more than anything for it to be true, but he couldn’t see how it would be true. But he knows he heard what Buck asked, knows he should be thrilled Buck loves him back, but the doubts eat him up. What if he was just asking in general, not personally? What if he thought he was talking to someone else? Maybe he’s exaggerating his gratefulness for taking care of him and he means it platonically?
It’s killing him not knowing.
Eddie clears his throat. “Hey, uh- earlier you asked- before you fell asleep, do you-”
He’s a stuttering mess, hasn’t stumbled over his words this much since he asked Shannon out in their senior year.
Buck cuts in, putting him out of his misery. “If you’re asking if I remember asking you if you’d still stay my friend if you found out I was in love with you, then yes, I do remember and I’m so sorry.”
Sorry for what? I’m sorry I was just loopy, it was just a question, I’m not actually in love with you?
Buck swallows hard. “Do you hate me?”
Eddie’s eyes widened completely at the question. “Why would I hate you?”
“Because I’m in love with you and continued to be your friend without telling you as such?”
His heart is racing a mile a minute because Evan Buckley loved him back and he’d had no idea the entire time. He shakes his head with a smile and unshed tears burning his eyes. “I would be the biggest hypocrite if I hated you for that.”
It looks as though Buck hadn’t heard right as he shook his head, but he hopes he understands.
“Come again?” Eddie can’t help but snort at how similar Buck and him are sometimes. “Why are you crying? Don’t cry!”
“I’m crying because I love you and I just found out it’s reciprocated, okay? Give me a second here.” He lets out a mix between a laugh and a cry. “Holy shit, you love me!”
Eddie’s mind is reeling. The more the shock wears off, the more joy and excitement he starts to feel.
“You love me!” Buck grins and leans forward, stopping to look Eddie in the eye and ask for permission -- which he eagerly grants -- and soon, what Eddie dreamed of since the Grenade Incident is happening. Their lips touch and Eddie Diaz tries not to be a cliche, but it’s a whole show of fireworks, kissing Buck. More than he could have ever imagined.
It’s an hour later, and they’re laying in Eddie’s bed, bodies pressed up against the other. Eddie hasn’t felt so secure in years, can’t even remember a time when things felt right until then. Lying next to Buck, things feel light for the first time since he doesn’t know how long, and the feeling of security is what lulls Eddie to sleep.
Until Buck starts to sniffle and then Eddie is wide awake again.
“You okay, Buck?”
Buck shakes his head rapidly with a pout. “No, I have to pee.”
He tries to keep in his laughter, he really does, but the shock and amusement outweighs his ability not to laugh at things that aren’t funny to other people.
Buck sniffles once more. “Why are you laughing?”
“Because you’re adorable and I love you.” Eddie’s lips quirk into a soft smile. “Now, c’mon, up you go.”
Buck grumbles. “Love you too.”
When he’s done, Eddie turns back to get his crutches and gets the surprise of a lifetime when Buck reaches out to slap his ass.
“Hey!”
“What? I did tell you you had a nice ass.”
“Oh my God.”

It had become A Thing™ between them. Of course, as all Things™ do, it began as a joke.
The team was eating breakfast that Bobby made when Eddie came in late, the seats at the table already full.
"Edmundo is late again?" Buck crowed from his seat at the end. "Is this gonna be a new thing for you?"
Chimney knocked his shoulder against Buck's. "Even if he's late to work for the rest of his life, you still won't be the favorite."
"I wouldn't advise testing that theory, though," Bobby chimed in from the other end.
The other side of the table laughed while Buck pouted. Hen smiled at him, "At least you'll always be the baby of the house."
This time Eddie fell into the laughter of the table as Buck spluttered indignantly. "Eddie's newer than I am!"
"Don't worry, you can still be the baby," Eddie said as he brushed past Buck to get himself a plate.
Once he got his food, he started towards one of the other tables closer to the balcony when Chimney called out to him, "Eddie! Why don't you sit with us?"
Eddie looked expectantly back at him, then at the table with clearly no more room, raising an eyebrow. Buck pushed back in his seat a little, patted his leg. "Come here, Eds. You can sit with me."
"I'm fine with an actual seat, so-" He moved again for the empty, smaller table.
"I guess if you're so fragile. We wouldn't wanna drag Eddie out of his comfort zone." Buck grinned over at Chim and Hen. Eddie met Bobby's gaze at the other end, but the man just shrugged in a you know I don't control any of that kind of way.
Eddie knew what Buck was doing. This taunting game he liked to play. There was no way he was going to fall for it. Well, he thought. It's not falling for it if I know what he's doing. So he shrugged and walked over, plopping down right in Buck's lap.
Chimney and Hen started laughing immediately, Bobby grinning into his food, as Buck choked and spluttered. Eddie glanced back over his shoulder. "What? Was that not an invitation?" He had to hold back a laugh, "I mean, if you can't handle it-"
He made a move to stand, but Buck put a hand on his waist, holding him there. It was gentle enough that Eddie could go if he wanted, but also enough pressure to persuade him to stay. Eddie felt something shift in his chest. And oh. Oh. That was new.
"You wish, Diaz." He reached around Eddie for his coffee, pink climbing up his neck.
"Don't call me Diaz."
And that was that. Every time there weren't enough chairs at the table, either Eddie or Buck sat in the other's lap. It became so normal that they began doing it even when there were enough seats. It was just their Thing™.
Of course, this made things very difficult on Eddie. Now he knew things about Buck that he hadn't before. Like how he normally sat leaning back in his chair, sprawled out to relax. But when Eddie sat with him, he leaned against his back, resting his chin on Eddie's shoulder. When he needed something, he'd just man-handle Eddie around until he could get it (that did weird things to his heart), but never holding him in a way that he couldn't leave if he wanted to (which also did weird things to his heart). And when Buck sat on Eddie, he was more careful of his movements, each seemingly calculated. He didn't move too fast or talk with his hands as much, careful not to accidentally smack him in the face with any flailing.
With all this, Eddie had a lot to think about. He wasn't quite oblivious. He knew that he was attractive and could usually tell when someone wanted him. But with Buck it was different. It was Buck. He was so afraid of messing things up, he didn't want to look too closely at any signs. He didn't want to ruin this.
But it all came to a head one day, after a particularly bad shift. It was a pileup, many people dead on arrival, and more were obviously not going to make it. By the time the team made it back to the firehouse, the call was weighing on everyone. Bobby made them restock the trucks then take a break, trying to ease the tension.
Eddie finished showering then made his way up the stairs. Buck was sitting on one of the couches, staring blankly at the TV. Something twisted in Eddie's heart at the sight of him. He moved to sit next to him, but when he passed in front of Buck, he was pulled down onto his lap. Buck buried his head in Eddie's shoulder. After a moment, Eddie shifted so he could put an arm around Buck and his head was leaning more in his chest.
Sitting there, not even Hen or Chim making fun of them, it all seemed to click for Eddie. Time was a fleeting thing. He didn't know for sure he'd mess things up, but he also didn't know if he wouldn't. He just knew their Thing™ was changing.
He leaned down to press a kiss to the top of Buck's head. "It's movie night," he paused. "You're still coming?" Buck nodded, but other than that, didn't move. "Christopher will be happy to see you." Another pause. "I think you should stay over tonight."
Buck lifted his head to look at Eddie. He must've seen something there he liked because he smiled, small and slow, squeezing his arms a little tighter around Eddie. Then leaned up to press a kiss to his cheek. Yeah, time was fleeting, so he couldn't wait for the important things.
