At long last I've remembered to post this one. It's been done for a while I just keep forgetting to share.

Aside: I'm thinking of reopening commissions but I have a big university event coming up that I need to attend for my capstone project and because of that + other November events I'm probably actually not going to open comms anytime soon but I guess it's one of those things we'll have to wait and see--I do still owe some friends some art so I also have to finish that before opening my comms here.

Dick has the unique ability to lead people. It's not just about telling others what to do, it's people wanting to follow him, listen to him, and and accepts his commands of their own volition.

In the DC/RWBY comic, the RWBY team crosses over to Gotham with all their problems so they have to work together with Batman, Batgirl, and Nightwing (Ruby REALLY gets along with Dick which for some reason makes so much sense idk why). And the batfamily get superpowers.

Inspiration is the factor that leads people to moving mountains, becoming greater, and changing our entire lives and everyone else and Dick is the one who bestows that power.

He literally inspires people to be better and inspires them to follow him and became the greatest they can be.

He just has the ability to inspire people to reach greater heights. The younger generation, his own, and the older ones kind of hero worship him.

Charisma is a dangerous power to have. It's essentially the unique ability to convince people to want to do things for you.

Examples of charismatic leaders are Martin Luther King Jr, Joan of Arc, Fidel Castro, and Napolean.

These people moved nations, worlds, societies but they are only one person. And Dick, has the ability to do this too.

To describe him as a person, to describe his charismatic authority, you need to combine all those figures into one person. And that's the equivalent of his power.

Because in the comics when he wants something - the whole superhero society answers.

They Would Not Fucking Say That! Preliminary Poll

Lonnie Machin (Anarky)

From: Prelude to the Wedding: Red Hood vs. Anarky. New 52/Prime Earth(?) Context: Anarky attempts to thwart Catwoman’s bachelorette party (it was a lead-up to the Bruce/Selina fail wedding) and Jason Todd attempts to stop him.

Teams up with fascists to ruin Selina’s outing by sowing violence, chaos, and destruction in a large crowd of people because the Joker played on his desire for a father figure.

Lonnie, prior to the reboot, was conceived as and most prominently depicted as a politically left-anarchist character until his creator and primary writer, Alan Grant, began getting into Randian Neo-Tech Objectivism and projected it onto Lonnie as Lonnie was always his political mouthpiece. However, despite Lonnie's political sway going from more anarcho-communist to objectivist, he was always a character who had near-unwavering, passionate stances on social issues. He considered anyone who preyed on the common man, or "enemies of the people", to be *his* enemies, and he often came at this from a leftist point of view. He was a strong supporter of social justice for the oppressed, and it was his sorrow and outrage at oppression that led him to take up vigilantism. He despised fascism and considered anyone who used initiatory violence against others to be opposed to him. To Lonnie, anarchism is a philosophy of total freedom from oppression, self-determination, and helping your fellow man, not 'chaos'.

He was also *very* anti-gun and anti-weapon of mass destruction. Whenever he used bombs, they were often smoke bombs or paint bombs. On the one single occasion he used actual bombs to blow up a munitions factory, he evacuated everyone in the building before it blew up, as he cares for the lives of innocents and does not kill. The one single time that it is implied that he killed, his victim was a man who blew up 20+ innocent people in a public setting via bombing and used him as a scapegoat. He has said before that he 'can't let innocent people die because of him'. He holds to this even if he can be clumsy in his methods. When he once experienced a machine-induced dream in which Gotham City descended into fiery chaos because of his well-intentioned actions, he had a crying breakdown.

And, on the Joker - in his 1999 solo series, there is a plot point that is left open-ended that implies the Joker could be Lonnie's biological father, as he is an adoptee. This was done to cement Lonnie into the Batman mythos, as his creators Alan Grant and Norm Breyfogle cared a lot about him. When editors disapproved of this, they let Grant write it on the condition that he would prove it wrong later on, but after the Joker issue the series was canceled, and so for all intents and purposes, it was not meant to be lasting 'canon'. Lonnie has been known to hate the Gotham Rogues, as he considers their actions against the people of the city to be completely antithetical to his views and ideals, some of the most important things to him. When he thought that the Joker could've been his father, he had a breakdown. He visited Arkham in order to find out and the Joker briefly played on his (at the time, a 16 year old child) yearning to figure out his parentage in the wake of his adoptive parents' implied death (with some genetic determinism 'does this mean i'll be a "madman" too? involved, but, eugh), but once the Joker tried to use Lonnie to help him break out of Arkham, Lonnie quickly acted against him to prevent his escape. It is said in a (dubiously canon) Batman encyclopedia that the crisis that the Joker could have been his father put him through caused him to self-isolate even harder than he normally does for a while until Cassie Sandsmark's speech during YJ: Sins of Youth inspired him back onto the field. Needless to say, he hates the Joker, and his hatred for the Joker's actions was enough to override his want for a parental figure.

In the post-reboot continuity, Lonnie is no longer an adoptee and his single mother would tell him the Joker was his 'real father' and would come and get him if he misbehaved. He began writing letters to the Joker, who eventually tried to get Lonnie to 'impress' him by giving Batman a 'rehearsal' before his wedding. Lonnie did this by gathering militant anti-feminist terrorists and gun nuts alongside leftists and anti-fascists in one place in order to get them to fight each other and cause 'blood, smoke, and chaos.'

Since Dark Crisis was a massive critical and financial failure when do you think we can realistically expect a new YJ book (or Teen Titans book staring them)

Okay, I will explain my reasoning under the cut, but my guesstimate would be around 2 years post-Dark Crisis: Young Justice before getting something new featuring them—whether it be Teen Titans or Young Justice though, I could not say.

Now, rather than just pulling a number out of my ass, my immediate response to getting this question was to look at publishing patterns/trends when it came to Young Justice and Teen Titans books.

I was using cover date information from the DC wiki for this, so not the most foolproof/precise data set in the world, but enough to give me a general idea.

The first thing I wanted to look at was, more broadly, what sorts of gaps there were with NO Teen Titans or Young Justice book since those teams came to be.

This is because presently, while we do have a Titans book, we do not have a Teen Titans book. As much as those are obviously related, they do serve/feature characters of different demographics, so I was looking specifically at the things categorized as 'Teen'.

The only exception to this is The New Teen Titans Vol. 2 because the book remains with the same team but switches names to 'The New Titans' partway through—it wasn't a relaunch of the book with an older team though, just a rebrand/name change as the characters had aged. It is still widely considered the same run, so I felt separating it (when we're talking about DC's publishing standpoint) didn't make sense.

ANYWAYS, their run years are as follows:

Teen Titans Vol. 1: 1966-73, 1976-78

The New Teen Titans Vol. 1: 1980-84

The New Teen Titans Vol. 2: 1984-96

Teen Titans Vol. 2: 1996-1998

Teen Titans Vol. 3: 2003-2011

Teen Titans Vol. 4: 2011-2014

Teen Titans Vol. 5: 2014-2016

Teen Titans Vol. 6: 2016-2021

Teen Titans Academy: 2021-2022

As is perhaps evident, the only gaps are between 1974-1975 (hiatus during Teen Titans Vol.1), 1979 (between Teen Titans Vol. 1 & New Teen Titans Vol. 1), and 1999-2002 (between Teen Titans Vol. 1 and Teen Titans Vol. 2).

The largest of those being four years (1999-2002)... but those years are covered by Young Justice's initial run!

The Young Justice runs (in main continuity, not counting tie-ins for the cartoon) are as follows:

Young Justice Vol. 1: 1998-2003

Young Justice Vol. 3: 2019-2021*

Dark Crisis: Young Justice: 2022-2023*

*To reiterate for clarity because I imagine some of you are going 'huh? DC:YJ was 6 issues all in 2022!' I'm using cover dates for consistency with this data—since the final issues of YJ Vol. 3 & DC:YJ each came out late in 2020 and 2022 respectively, their cover dates place them at the start of the next calendar year

So, putting all of that together, that means that ever since DC Comics began publishing Teen Titans books in 1966, the longest period with neither a Teen Titans nor Young Justice book being published was 2 years, between 1974-1975.

However, that doesn't tell the full story to answer your question about when we could expect to see the Young Justice kids again, it's just a helpful gauge about books in their 'teen' character age demographic.

To clairfy: by 'Young Justice' I am (for the sake of answering this question) specifically referring to Tim, Cassie, Bart and Kon since they are the group that moved together between Young Justice and the Teen Titans.

Now, things get a bit tricky trying to quantify 'were they together on a team' at certain points because characters die sometimes for a while (looking at you Kon and Bart), or temporarily leave teams for other assorted reasons—yet even during those periods, they may be plot-relevant to the book/still be associated with it (mostly looking at Kon for that one). Since those are more plot-specific variations but still take the characters into account (rather than just randomly omitting them), I am counting all of the runs in which T/C/B/K were members of the team even if one or more were not there the entire time.

Now, the runs that feature Tim, Cassie, Bart, and Kon are as follows:

Young Justice Vol. 1: 1998-2003

Teen Titans Vol. 3: 2003-2011

Teen Titans Vol. 4: 2011-2014*

Teen Titans Vol. 5: 2014-2016*

Young Justice Vol. 3: 2019-2021

Dark Crisis: Young Justice: 2022-2023

*Obviously, these books take place during the New 52 era, and these are drastically altered versions of the characters—particularly for Kon and Bart because N52 Kon and Bar Torr are entirely separate people. However, when the subject we are discussing is DC's publishing patterns with these characters as IP, these would count as they were the N52/at-the-time equivalents of the characters.

As we can see, the only gap in publishing there is from 2017-2018 (between Teen Titans Vol. 5 and Young Justice Vol. 3). Which, much like the only gap of 'no Teen Titans/YJ book', is 2 years.

Thus, based on these previous patterns of DC's publishing, my guess would be around 2 years post-Dark Crisis: Young Justice before something new with them.

Now, this obviously is not foolproof logic, and DC could easily deviate from this! Comics publishing truly is not the most consistent thing in the world—especially with how nowadays ongoing runs really struggle to last for nearly as long as they used to. I can't predict the future, and I also do not work at DC. Looking at past data is really the only thing someone on the outside can do to try to figure out what may come in the future, so... yeah! That's my guess, and only time will tell.

I think dick and damian genuinely have the funniest batman/robin dynamic ever but otherwise... idk. ollie and mia? I don't find hero/sidekick duos all that compelling tbh which is funny bc I am into The hero/sidekick franchise. I just find "favorite" is the wrong word. like bruce and tim are fascinating to me as batman/robin as are bruce and steph but also bruce was so terrible to them. GRETA HAYES GRETA HAYES GRETA HAYES!!!! she is like THE most ignored member of yj98 which is wild since she's been there LONGER than cassie and cissie??? but she's literally everything to me. she died and then came back Wrong and everyone can see it and they're scared of her inherently because she's made of death but she literally just wants to be a normal girl but she's so so so terrified of being evil that it drives her into a spiral where she eventually becomes evil!!!!!! underrated duo: slobo and greta. I'm begging everyone to actually read all of young justice 1998 before yj posting because she is by FAR the most interesting character.

39. What comic plotline gives you brain worms?

hmmm okay so in titans 1999 when those kids from the DEO or w/e break into the tower and stay with them for a few issues. in my HEART! I think the titans should've just continued to have a gaggle of children in their tower. if we expanded each one to have a coherent character it very reasonably could've been an expansion of lian's gen alongside cerdian except DC decided they hated kids and murdered all of them in between the years of 2006 and 2008 </3

same thing with james from huntress 1989!! where did he go!! DC loves introducing kids between the ages of 8 and 14 and then wiping them off the face of the planet a few issues later. helena straight up adopts a child supergenius, gets erased, and when she appears again two years later she is childless. where are they :(

also fear state (batman rebirth) was a really cool concept but the execution was terrible. in my heart I did it better

Hi! I’m trying to dig into Cassie’s comics in order to learn more about her character and read her best stories. I’ve already collected some recs of her time in Wonder Woman comics, and I’m aware that her fan fave story is all of Young Justice (1998). However, I tried reading YJ and I honestly am not into stories aimed towards a younger teen audience that are goofy and satirical. I can definitely see the appeal for some folks, but it’s just not for me. Despite that, I am willing to read more of this run if only purely to learn more about Cassie and her dynamics with her teammates in the run. Can you by chance recommend me which issues/arcs from YJ (1998) are best purely for Cassie? Thank you!

i've read a lot of peter david's work (not necessarily by choice - he's just happened to write a lot of characters i'm interested in), and i completely understand not clicking with his sense of humour. it's very slapstick and sometimes doesn't land. i get it! i've read all of david's hulk and captain marvel runs which i found very aggravating at times! i also get if you're an older reader not connecting with teen characters.

however, while it's been a number of years now since i've done a full reread of the original young justice run, i do think if you're interested in reading cassie and her dynamics with her best friends, you're going to have to read every issue - or at least from issue #4 when she first joins the team onward.

this is a series from 25 years ago when comics were written very differently than they are now, meaning there was no “writing for the trade" where 4-5 issue arcs can be collected in small bite size paperbacks. young justice vol. 1 was an ongoing series with a number of running plot lines that weave in and out of it. it was also a team book where cassie is just one part of the ensemble cast.

BUT. if you're really going to twist my arm, i guess i would recommend issues #4, 6-7, 15-24, 27-29, 33-36, 38-39, 43, 46-50, 54-55. (which ends up being almost the entire series lol)

Bear with me a moment while I talk about swing music from the late 1990s as portrayed in comics. Weirdly specific, I know, but I find it an interesting cultural detail.

In Superboy 1994 #59 (cover date February 1999), Serling Roquette tries to connect with Guardian (a clone of a hero from the 1940s, on whom she has a very much one-sided crush) by enthusiastically telling him about "the new Brian Setzer album," which is "almost as good as Louis Prima!"

She is probably referring to the Brian Setzer Orchestra's "Jump, Jive an' Wail," a 1998 cover of a Louis Prima song from 1956. This song was all over the radio in the late 90s. I remember hearing it in the car when I was a child (and mishearing the lyrics). It's dang catchy. Give it a listen.

But the interesting thing isn't so much Serling's fabulous taste as how adults are portrayed as responding to it. When she's introduced, she talks about how much her mother disapproves of her listening to such music.

Which seems bizarre. You might expect the average parent in the 1990s to be more concerned about their child listening to...say, the edgier stuff that Kon prefers (rock, metal, gangsta rap), not 1940s crooners.

And this isn't the only time such an attitude comes up! In Young Justice 1998 #15 (cover date December 1999), four of the kids attend a dance at Cissie's school. The music is provided by a swing band called "the Nose Pickin' Daddies," dressed in striped suits and fedoras. (The band's name and the lyric pictured below are likely a parody of the Cherry Poppin' Daddies and their 1997 song "Zoot Suit Riot.")

The teenagers seem to be enjoying the music, but school counselor Marcy Money is not impressed.

Marcy was apparently a teenager of the 1970s, and she can't understand why music that she would have considered old-fashioned and tame is what is currently appealing to the youth. Kids these days just aren't as musically rebellious as they used to be!

Marcy and Mrs. Roquette are probably around the ages of the writers of these comics, and this disdain for neo-swing is a possible reflection of the writers' perspectives, or at least of a prevalent view among their generation at this time.

This amuses me, because...of all things to be outraged that the kids are into? But on a more serious note, it ties into YJ's recurring themes of generational disconnect. In this case, the current generation hearkening back to a former one (from the days when--in our world--the adult heroes of these comics first made their appearance!).
