Who wants more Critical Role rambling?

Me. I do. My brain is at full capacity and the thought goblins need somewhere to go.

First off, All Minds Burn.

I implicitly trust All Minds Burn.

One might think, based on previous Matthew Mercer horror show extravaganzas, this is a bad idea. And it very well might be.

But I got a vibe. It's already a terrifying psionic mishmash of mold, slime, and rotted corpses able to (it's smokable!) connect people through a fuzzy buzzy hivemind, but then Matt adds that its mind is completely alien to Imogen. Straight up implying it's even more unfamiliar to her than anything they've seen of Predathos, the Reilora, and the twisted life of Ruidus.

The emotions it shares with Imogen are a facimile. A replication. Observed from those connected to it. It's not actually feeling these emotions, but is choosing to respond with those meanings.

Now, it could still be an elaborate ruse. Or it could still be just plain dangerous to Exandrians (as Matt kept saying "yet"). But consider how Exandrians are as alien to it as it is to them.

And it is deciding to navigate Exandrian life interactions instead of doing whatever would come naturally to it. It is an immense psychic entity and yet is deciding to be polite to Imogen and shies away from Ashton instead of becoming aggressive when Ashton makes it aware that they're not sure if their dunamantic funhouse would hurt to connect to or not. The way Matt describes its mental force is like a hypothetical interaction between a blue whale and a sparrow. The whale has no intention of hurting the sparrow, but any movement it makes is just so massive in comparison that a gentle nudge would rightly feel like an immense weight.

It's a bit of a stretch to call it good, as clearly those connected to it are severely altered in some manner, but it does seem... honorable. For as much as that means between alien creatures. We have yet to see it force entities to become under its will, merely offer the opportunity. And it straight up offered to help, in whatever way it can.

The moon is an interesting choice to seed. It might have an ulterior motive, but the impression I got was that it was interested to see a new dry dusty desert - a biome which it seems to prefer, for surely those connected to it have made it aware of the nearby jungles, cliffs, and caves. Ruidus, despite being cursed and red, is kind of a familiar landscape to an entity that's existed solely in the Hellcatch. And the people there are also psychic, which seems to be preferable to it.

So yeah. Trustworthy hivemind made of nightmares. This episode was fucking bonkers, y'all.

maybe its bc I haven't been super involved in the fandom, but how come I haven't seen anyone talking about how mia is also infected?? I've seen people talking about how ethan is mold and he's infected and he shouldn't be alive and all that, and I've also seen a few fics where ethan learns of his moldiness and uses the powers that he has, but no one ever mentions mia having powers?? But she's also infected since the dulvey incident???? And I seriously doubt the megamycete infection can be fought off with a few doses of fluconazole. Why haven't I seen anyone mentioning moldy mia?? Ethan's not the only moldy one in that family!!

In ttvtl, I think part of the reason I like your ocs where I can’t stand many others, is that you didn’t shove them into the spotlight of an already made story and expect us to care about them. Instead you gave them a backstory that planted them firmly in the world and emotional weight with the narrator.

They don’t feel like a gum wrapper doodle stapled onto a painting, but a part of the painting itself if that makes sense.

As a writer, I'm very critical of how OCs are used in my fics... I want their role in the story to feel earned. Though as a reader, I actually love well-done OCs in a story! I think OCs can be amazing for expanding a world and bringing new depth to it, but a lot of what we have in mind when we think of OCs in fanfic is like...canonxOC fics and other very niche stuff. But OCs can be a really good resource when used well! Especially for expanding on backstories and creating family bonds. Some fandoms do this better than others (I think a fandom that really succeeds with OCs in some really strong fics is ATLA...but at the same time there's a lot of...less-quality stuff out there, too, haha), while some fandoms are very anti-OCs in general.

Resident Evil has a lot of OC fics in its fandom, but the prevalence is towards canonxreader and canonxOC content. I personally don't have a problem with that stuff at all--it's just a separate part of fandom--and I've read a couple, but I'm attracted to quality writing and character development over premise. Fics like mine that have OCs are simply operating in a different sphere--my fic isn't about Delia, Michael, or Ava, but they expand the world and help breathe life into Ethan's story.

#when it comes to OCs i also have a LOT of interest in experimenting with survivors of the Las Plagas outbreaks #(RE4 primarily though RE5 also has interesting content to pick through...it's just a much less interesting game even outside its discourses #but I'm not sure whether it'll become relevant to TtVtL and Ethan & Eveline's story #The Winterses are here to stay for sure tho #asks #anonymous #through the valley to life
