Time, Chess, and the Tower of Magic
(novel: 29-35)
(manhwa: 44-45)
I just reread the scene in the novel, and I'm kind of obsessed with it, but also am in awe of how well it established the dynamic between Desir and Zod, something that I feel like the manhwa didn't really do, so, I'm doing a bit of comparing under the cut.
Also, if you like these characters in the manhwa, then you should 100% read at least these few chapters, because, as I said before, they are amazing.
So the manhwa starts us off with how Zod is an "odd fellow", he's always been that, and how he lead civilization into a new era of magic, he's achievements are endless, and is Desir's irreplaceable friend.
Now, in the novel, Desir says that Zod accepted his request because he was intrigued by it. (True) He says that Zod single-handedly renewed interest in magic.
(Also, fun-fact: someone wrote a book about all of his accomplishments, and it's thicker than most encyclopedias.)
(Also also, in the manhwa he looks like 40, in the novel that's 30)
The next scene plays out almost the same, except that we learn, in the novel, that Zod has an 'archaic feeling to his words'.
While in the manhwa he's all nice, and smiley etc. novel!Desir points out that until the North Sea's rules are mentioned, Zod's so impatient to get on with the match that it can almost be heard in his tone, which for this old man is VERY impatient.
And then of course Desir drops the bomb, that yeah, he wants to play the Rule set that originates from Zod's homeland and n!Desir immediately points out how much more relaxed Zod gets from hearing that.
The chess match starts, and in both mediums Zod's like, this kid is pretty good, but he's still just a kid, and "[He's] too hasty with [his] moves"
Desir, when he's on the verge of losing, makes the bet. It goes in the novel as it goes in the manhwa, except that a) Zod's like, 'I know that everything you did so far was to make this wager, and I hope you see how suspicious you are.' and b) At this Desir's just like, 'Wow, you're very interested, huh? Then I won't tell you until I win.'
And then the whole 'you play like a whole different person' thing happens in the manhwa, 'oh, well, I played against him in the future so of course I know how he plays', 'I've been the same person this entire time' etc. etc.
So. That does not happen in the novel.
What happens instead is we get the explanation as to why is Desir losing:
He's been playing with Zod for 6 years, yes,
However, this Zod plays differently than other Zod
In the future, his play style is more aggressive
Now he focuses on counter-play and he's more reserved
And Desir deduced this in the first few steps in their game, and been sacrificing pieces since then to analyze Zod's play style.
And also, yes, Desir did figure the greatest mage of all time out in what? 20 minutes?
And Desir might be losing, but because of the time limit Zod's going to make some stupid moves, which Desir deducted will happen, then he makes even worse moves, and the next thing Zod knows is that he got ripped to shreds in 3 minutes.
In the novel, Desir mentions that in the last minutes of the match, Zod's straight up panicking over how bad the situation has gotten for him.
Then, when Desir mentions the trade, Zod tries to calmly explain to him why that's not possible "You're asking to exchange a bar of gold for a peanut"
Desir of course doesn't budge and after a bit of "bartering" it's clear just how fed up with this "boy"'s bs Zod is and reading this scene after the manhwa is kind of shocking
Zod expressed disdain at the boy's choice. "I expected you to choose more wisely. You've rejected my offer, and I can't accept your deal. With that, the negotiations are over." The man rose to get up from his seat.
(...)
"So you think this is a fair deal." The Tower Master was audibly upset by Desir's words.
And I'm very sad that this scene in this form didn't make it to the manhwa, because while we see Zod being dismissive and uninterested in Desir's idea before he sees it to himself, we don't see him being, well, like this.
Prideful, kind of cocky, and straight up offended that a mere student would even dare to suggest that his idea worth as much as support from the Tower of Magic, upset to the point that Desir has to actively put out 'fires' during the conversation so that it can progress.
Which is a beautiful way of showing us how, yes, Desir does know this guy, he knows why he's upset he knows what to say to get him to calm down enough to listen and also how to say it.
What in the manhwa is essentially just 'Well if I show you that my idea is worth it then it will be fine, right? Let me show you then.' in the novel is Desir going on first about how of course what he's saying is outrageous, and Zod is right to be upset, but shouldn't Zod know that impossible things are sometimes real? And then he starts explaining how 20 years old Zod Exarion becoming the Tower Master was an impossible feat, or maybe, perhaps, even more impossible, a student defeating him in chess! Which happened just now, and That is when Zod tells him to show him his idea.
This scene alone reaffirms to the reader, that Desir doesn't just know Zod as a tactician, but as a person, he knows how to talk to him, he knows how to talk sense into him, and that Desir did this enough in the past that this comes like second nature to him.
Zod being stone headed and stuck to his ways until Desir reminds him that he's been just like this boy in the past is also one of the most Old Person Thing TM Zod does in the entire novel, showing and not just telling us that the G is not just for show in that GILF he is actually old.
After that the "reveal" scene plays out pretty similarly except that Zod gets a bit more info out of Desir, one of them is that he didn't necessarily discover the technic but he "knows of it", and Desir lets the reader know that the person who discovered it was in fact Zod, just 3 years into the labyrinth, and as he starts explaining the theory Zod catches up extremely quickly, actually taking over Desir's explanation of how resonance is better than the enchant method.
When Desir mentions that he has more ideas like this, Zod tells his secretary to cancel every plan he has until he says otherwise, which is a very entertaining turn of events in my opinion.
So to wrap it up, while I love how the manhwa did this scene, (this is probably my favorite two chapters from it) I'm kind of sad that most of the little tidbits of building up the relationship between Zod and Desir, that would be important later got lost in adaptation.

RANKING THE SHOWS (2008, PART 1 OF 2)
I'm done with a calendar year of Adult Swim originals, so I'll rank all the shows (and specials) based solely on their output up through 2008. Also, I literally forgot three shows to include in this list until I sat down to actually write each blurb, so it's somewhat likely I somehow forgot more. Please let me know if I fucked up big time. Here we go:
45. The Groovenians (2002)
Not only is it unfunny, it's also simplistic, has shitty CGI animation, and is preoccupied with the abrasive trope that all creativity, no matter how tepid or unimpressive, is noble and worth celebrating. The fact that there's legendary talent involved doesn't even come close to saving it.
44. The Finkel Files (2002)
Pathetically childish, terrible-looking, and in 2023 it puts me in the precarious position of making a very topical joke about Israel that will get my entire blog deleted and my residence drone-striked... by you-know-who :)
43. That Crook'd 'Sipp (2007)
So bad that it's borderline incomprehensible.
42. The Lewis Lectures (2002)
Merrill Markoe, Jack Black, and Laura Kightlinger come together to bring us what might be all of their worst work. And I'm including the time Laura Kightlinger kicked me and my friends out of a diner booth at a comedy show. This was worse than that! it might not be as bad as Jack Black's work with the Clinton Foundation, though.
41. Minoriteam (2005)
Amateurishly written, ugly-looking, and for a show that's so outwardly "politically incorrect" (even for it's time), there are a surprisingly few transgressive laughs to be had. At 20 episodes, it spreads itself THIN. If racist/racial humor is your thing, you have better options.
40. Penguins Behind Bars (2003)
Inoffensive, cute, and pleasingly cartoony. But it's more than a little boring, and doesn't feel like it belongs on Adult Swim.
39. Saul of the Mole Men (2007)
The most charitable thing one could say is that it looked fun to make. But it only gets less fun after the first episode and struggles to come up with anything truly funny or worth paying attention to, even. Uh, that one girl is pretty hot.
38. Robot Chicken (2005)
Patently not my sense of humor. But sometimes there's an interesting idea and once in a blue moon I laugh out loud. But these guys just get on my nerves.
37. Captain Sturdy: The Originals (2003)
Pretty lame, but sometimes the animation is fun. Also, this ranking is based on me half-remembering both Captain Sturdy shorts (the first of these aired on Cartoon Network), so this ranking could be faulty.
36. Lucy, the Daughter of the Devil (2005)
Trying to be edgy and Hot Topic cute at the same time. The animation was horrible, and it rarely made me smile even thought they stacked the cast with some of the funniest improvisors ever.
35. Stroker & Hoop (2004)
Manages to coast on a modicum of charm because it resembled crappy animated shows from the 90s that young me would have enjoyed. But 4 out of 5 episodes were complete wastes of time.
34. The Young Person's Guide to History (2008)
Sporadically charming in it's loosey-goosey crappiness; I'd argue the Saul of the Mole Men formula is a little more successful here. But it's still a pain to sit through most of it.
33. Fat Guy Stuck in Internet (2007)
Has one GREAT episode. Most of it extremely mid. These kids were almost onto something. ALMOST.
32. Stiff (2007)
Matt Maiellaro's comedic Evil Dead homage seemed like a good idea on paper. But it could've used more money and another pass on the script. An honorable flop, but a flop nonetheless.
31. Saddle Rash (2002)
This one got lowered a rung or two for having an ugly youtuber icon in the corner of the one graphic that seemed suitable for use on this post. Unfair, but I've never been fair!
30. Special Presentation/Anime Talk Show/Adult Swim Brain Trust (2004)
Maybe the worst thing involving Space Ghost to ever be on Adult Swim, which is a real feat.
29. Sealab 2021 (2000)
The first season is good, with a few GREAT episodes. But after that, it takes a serious nosedive in quality and becomes one of the worst shows to ever air on Adult Swim. A remarkable fall from grace.
28. Lowe Country (2007)
I could watch Lowe fart around for roughly 11 minutes. Maybe not every week, but this should at least have been an annual special. Harmless fun, unless you're a female receptionist at an Atlanta radio station.
27. The Brak Show (2000)
Hyped at the outset of Adult Swim, this turned out to be a bit of a dud. But was always sorta harmless and occasionally managed to not feel like a waste of time. A few memorable episodes and jokes.
26. Squidbillies (2005)
Has it's charms. Most episodes are duds, but it's very specific and I always root for it to be decent. Sometimes it is! Most of the time it's repugnant, which at least is interesting.
25. Harvey Birdman Attorney at Law (2000)
I went from loving this show to hating this show, but by the time it was over I found myself somewhere in between. The old me would be shocked to see me rank this above Brak or even Sealab.
24. Assy McGee (2006)
Uneven, but I consider this show a diamond in the rough, with a some really inspired jokes and a few great episodes. Bad, low-effort episodes drag it down, though.
23. Frisky Dingo (2006)
Started a little lame, but it had little stretches where it picked up steam. The serialized nature of it will make the lesser episodes a sticking point.
22. Let's Fish (2007)
Creative and fun. Am I sad it didn't get picked up as a series? Not really! Even though it's more deserving than some other shows, it still feels a little superfluous.
21. Perfect Hair Forever (2004)
Not a lot of substance, but this one always felt like a fun treat despite being total nonsense. Also I am truly hoping that my ranking it this high will catapult the show's standing in the public consciousness that women will start cosplaying as Brenda.
20. 12 oz. Mouse (2005)
More interesting than funny, but it is funny sometimes. It's also incredibly unique and has good vibes. Not worth overthinking it, though.
19. The Drinky Crow Show (2007)
I began an early draft of this list before I rewatched the series; I'd only recently watched the pilot, and Drinky Crow was close to the bottom. But the series improves on the pilot considerably, and it's really grown on me. Deserved at least a second season.
18. The Xtacles (2008)
There's only two episodes of this, but they are both laugh-out-loud funny, unfairly giving this show the highest batting average of any show involving members of 70/30 productions. Shoulda been more of them, man.
17. The Boondocks (2005)
Brilliant at times, but sometimes it feels like it's going through the motions of being just another animated sitcom. But when it's good, it feels special. We need more shows like this.
16. The New Big Ball With Neil Hamburger (2008)
Neil Hamburger should be allowed to do whatever he wants for at least ten episodes per year. Solidly very funny, better than some Awesome Show episodes.

As I grow older, I encounter more and more questions about kids. Let's get one thing straight - I never had any maternal instincts nor have I ever wanted kids. They were never in any future plans and still are not. In fact, I don't even like kids! I absolutely hate when people say things like "oh but you will change your mind" blah blah or when they try to almost force it! It's absolutely ridiculous. Long story short, I want to start a thread of reasons not to have a child as I was recently asked for reasons. Well I already have over 100. Please feel free to continue in comments or reblogs.

0:02 - the editing of Kath creeping in from the side, lol
0:10 - the lighting/coloring is different on this one. his hair looks much less red
0:19 - mic is slightly in shot there but he must have noticed and fixed it because it’s not for most of the video
0:29 - he tries to toss and catch things surprisingly often for how clumsy he is
0:32 - um. what. took him a few seconds to react to that one
0:57 - that is a very specific childhood want
1:14 - that started terrible and just got worse 😂
1:36 - he is going to have a lot of broken pringles
2:02 - “sour cream is a bit sweet” what even. I mean, I sort of know what he’s thinking

This is a cute Phil video! Not trying anything too extreme here. There are a lot of other more memorable videos from 2020 for me, even though this is good.
Phil had also attended VidCon London at the end of February, where he recorded a podcast and participated in a fun science demo. The first major YouTube event he had attended without Dan in years.

Some rough translations from Liu Yuning (HYJ’s actor)’s Live Broadcast on 7 January 2021, because he talked about Ultimate Note (and HeiHua) a lot:
LYN (18:45) - about the wooden knife: “(...) With Hua’er Ye, the separation scene between Xiao Hua and I, and with Tuo Ba too, you see which one, right? (...) That scene was in the original script. The lines were already complete. (He makes a parenthesis here to talk about how this adaptation really respected the original works, including the words used) But during that separation scene, there’s this one part -- the one where I gift a knife to him. A small wooden knife (...) That’s something we added ourselves.........That’s something we added, because it wasn't in the original script. How did that small knife come about? At that time, I was filming. I have an acting teacher who, while on set, saw one of the staff from the props team carving that small wooden knife. (...) So we discussed with the director, I said “that scene is a separation with Xiao Hua, right? For a separation, just using words might be...I think perhaps we could add an item there. We might not even need to add any lines.” (...) But this item strengthened the ...bond between these two people. So that knife is something that we added. (...) I think it’s quite nice, at least it doesn’t ruin the original script, and it strengthens the feelings - the bond between these two people (...)”
LYN (22:50), talking about the comments he saw on Ultimate Note: “(...) In the first few episodes, I saw “I cannot accept that this Hei Yanjing has a round face”.....This comment stabbed my heart for 3 days straight. Really. (...) Well, let me explain first to everyone what was going on back then! Right now my face isn’t that round, right? Why? First, because I added the filter that makes my face slim - no that’s not it. First, it’s because the me at that time had just done a small surgery on my vocal chords. (...) After the surgery, I had to stay home for a whole month without speaking. So what to do? Eat. I ate for a whole month and went straight afterwards to film that show.”
LYN (57:52) - about any chance for a S2 and budget use: “A friend is asking here, will Ultimate Note have a 2nd season? (...) First of all, I’m just an actor. (...) Ok, I’ll talk about it properly. Will it have a 2nd season? To be honest, I personally hope it will. (...) I believe if you asked me to act Hei Yanjing a 2nd time ...I can’t say the 1st time was good, it wasn’t. But I might be able to -- because I’m also growing, right -- to express this role a bit better. (...) So I hope it will have a 2nd season. (...) Because let’s be honest, I think the crew took a lot of care in making this show. (...) Most of the budget and everything went into the production...the special effects, the scenery, things like that. So the actors like us....*smiles* well of course, they gave me money too, I shouldn’t say it like that, but what I mean is, a lot of the attention went into the making. It’s not a show where, for example, the actors use up a lot of the budget and the production gets less in comparison. (...) So I’m thinking, well, this show could be considered a small, small success? -- I don’t dare to issue a judgment on it, but in my heart, it is a success. (...) So will it have a 2nd season? I hope so, but until now, I haven’t received news that we can film such a thing. (...) Don’t expect too much. For other shows, sometimes, S1 is popular, and then they have trouble shooting S2, because after the 1st season’s success, all the actors increased their prices, so they might not be able to sign on for the 2nd one. But I think for this show (...) each of the actors really like this show. So they might choose to accept to play in this show, even if it means they get paid less. Starting from me, if you tell me this show’s got a different revenue from what I usually get, I’d still want to play it -- that’s how good it is. (...) *reading a comment* “Careful with what you say, boss”. Yes, I almost didn’t control myself just now.... Almost.”
He later mentions that to film certain scenes, they’d really go deep into the mountains, drive for hours and then actually have to climb very steep roads, to places inaccessible by car.
LYN (1:02:02) - about Xiao Hua’s actor Liu Yuhan: “*reads* “Talk about your CP”. Oh, you mean Xiao Hua, right? The actor for Xiao Hua, what I want to say is, I was very happy to collaborate with him, because he...really is a nice person. Just talking about getting to know him outside the story, and not as a character, he’s a very nice little fellow. He’s very honest. He’s also from Dongbei like me. His usual state is of course not as cold as the Xiao Hua in-story, not as “cool”. In reality, he’s still quite laid-back as a person, quite...fun. Kind of like a kid. Well, not really a kid, but...he’s younger than me, so in my heart, he’s like a little brother.” He explains that they tried to have a meal together more than once post-filming, but never managed.
LYN (1:03:35) - about the postcard: “That postcard at the end, the one about the 1,000 sheep...Many people didn’t understand when they watched it. What was that 1,000 sheep about? Actually, it’s because Hei Ye jumped down at the end....with the hairy monster...he jumped down. (...) So that postcard first paves the way for what comes after (aka the storyline in Sha Hai). And on another note, it’s to prove that Hei Yanjing isn’t dead. Because that postcard is what Hei Yanjing left to Xiao Hua. (...)”
LYN (1:07:38) - about Hei Xia Zi as a character: “Actually, he’s not a real miser. (...) He does really like money, there is a little bit of a greedy vibe to him. But you’ll discover that many times, he didn’t actually receive money, and still went ahead and did the thing. (...) He’s actually a lot more about loyalty, and courage, and responsibility. There’s not one thing where he was like “if you do not transfer 10,000 to me, I definitely won’t do this thing for you”. But he will have a vaguely threatening air, and make it seem like he doesn’t care that much about bonds/friendships. (...) He simply has his special way of doing things. He might also have his own type of apathy. After all, a person, after experiencing so much - because as I said, he counts as a person who’s lived a long life (...), he wouldn’t care as much about many things related to time. So in reality, he doesn’t care that much about money either. His love of money is a personality trait, but the premise to anything he does is definitely not money, it’s rather loyalty. It’s feelings.”
LYN (1:09:39) - about Hei Yanjing’s real name written in the sand: “Someone asked “what did Hei Yanjing write in the sand, is it ‘Liu Yuning’?”......Yes. I wanted to write ‘Modern Brothers Liu Yuning’ at the time.”
LYN (1:12:00) - about Hei Yanjing’s age: “As someone who just acted this role, I don’t know how old he is either. But he’s definitely someone who’s lived a long life. (...) In the state I was acting him, he must have at least been a few hundred years old. (...) How many hundreds, I have no way to ascertain.”
LYN (1:12:49) - about the fried rice prop on set: “It tastes pretty good. (...) But the problem is where we were filming, (...) we were mostly in Yun Nan. The temperature there was over 40°C. When it was low, it was a little above 30°C. (...) The fried rice would turn sour in no time. (...) So you’ll find out that, throughout this entire show, Hei Ye loves to eat fried rice with green peppers and meat, but hasn’t eaten a single mouthful. He’s just feeding Xiao Hua with it. And the reason why Xiao Hua looks disgusted is because it’s really sour.”
LYN (1:14:00) - more bts stories about the heat and stench: “That scene where we first fall into the tunnel. That tunnel from the time of the Republic. (...) That tunnel, my God! (...) The temperature outside was 40°C. Inside, most of the scenery was made from foam. (...) The temperature inside that environment was incredibly hot, unimaginable, and on top of that we were wearing leather. (...) And do you remember when we first fell into the tunnel with Xiao Hua and we dug up a place? (...) The bones on the floor were all purchased real bones from sheep or pigs and so on. (...) Think about the temperature in there. In one night, the stench was impossible. (...) When we were filming, the stench was so bad, you felt like you couldn’t live on anymore (...) My God...At the time, as soon as I walked into that place, I was dumbstruck. Xiao Hua and I made eye contact and just went... “do you smell this?” He went “I can’t even hear what you’re saying anymore, I’m already knocked out.” (...) The director went “Let me see! ...............My God. Props director, what do we do with this?” And the Props director said “What our show cares about is making things realistic. We want to make the original works real. We want the props to be as real as possible.” (...) We also have to respect that Props director’s professionalism, right? (...) So the Director said “Ok, then let’s do this, let’s prepare some cologne.” (...) Poured it. Poured 2-3 bottles of it into the place... It made everything WORSE. The normal stench was simply stinky. But the cologne -- that thing has volatility!! (...) Do you know how stinky it was, exactly? It felt like even my arms could feel the stench. We held on for 3 days to film that part. That stench, my God. It’s a smell I can remember my whole life.”

1. what's their favorite beverage - alcoholic and/or non-alcoholic?
hana likes nice, comforting warm drinks like hot chocolate and apple cider, he hasn't really had experience with alcoholic drinks
2. what's their favorite flavor? (spicy, sweet, sour, etc.)
umami tbh, some nice hearty savory stew flavors
3. what's their favorite food?
BEEF Clapping hands sign STEW Clapping hands sign he also like sweets, pastries and candies and whatnot
4. breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert, snacks - which do they look forward to the most?
dinner cause he imagines it as a family meal, and also it's the heartiest meal
5. do they have a food or flavor they absolutely hate?
bland things like.. boiled green beans.. like.. wet tasteless vegetables.. he is not a fan but who is tbh
6. can they tolerate spicy food?
yeah! he likes some good heat in his meals
7. what is their favorite animal?
DRAGONS! cause they're cool. also... because baby.
8. what do they wear to bed?
boxers or nothing in his own home, in the castle tho he wears like. pj bottoms.

curled up around a pillow or in a blanket, or flopped on his belly

he would like to be a morning person, but he tends to get excited about whatever he's working on and accidentally staying up late, which then makes him sleep in late..

HEAVY SLEEPER. the boy sleeps like a rock.
12. it's a rainy day, what will they do cooped up inside all day?
hana has a WHOLE ROOM of stuff to work on. he tries to get old tech up and running again (with.. limited resources) or to get it to be useful in other ways.
13. do they have a favorite scent or smell?
honestly... musty smell of city that was cut off and unused for a thousand years.
14. what do they smell like? do they wear perfume or cologne?
a little bit sweaty, a little musty from hanging out in an abandoned city, a little like oil, wood shavings.. he smells like whatever he's been working on. he tries to just smell neutral around other people.
15. baths or showers?
BATHS! BUBBLES! RELAX TIME!! taking time just to be hana. nice.
16. how good are they at cooking?
it's not gourmet or anything but he can cook a tasty meal. he's worse at baking but he's practicing!!
17. what's their favorite time of year and why?
winter!!! pretty snow.. relaxing quiet.. getting to go inside and get all warm and cozy.. nice.
18. do they have a favorite holiday?
tbh i dont know what holidays there are in kos world... i oughta think of that.. but anything with people getting together and celebrating together is something he'd like to participate in someday
19. do they prefer buying or receiving gifts?
buying!!!! hana loves giving gifts. tbh he doesn't receive a lot of gifts. maybe like.. a jar of jam one time and it made him cry. he kept the jar.
20. how tall are they, and how do they feel about their height?
4' even. he's fine with his height tbh, his insecurities come in when he thinks about what OTHER people think about his height. he definitely recognizes that he looks different than everyone he's been around.
21. can they play any instruments?
not really.. he made a guitar once. was NOT good at it.
22. do they have a nice singing voice?
NO! cant keep a tune to save his life, but he's the only one (besides baby) who's heard him sing so it really hasn't mattered
23. do they talk to themselves?
YES! it could seem like he's talking to baby, but really... she can be asleep or somewhere else and he's just still talking to himself. who else does he have to talk to?! let him live.
24. do they enjoy music? what kind?
tbh he probably enjoys "old timey" music he found in the ancient city so like.. synth pop LMAO
25. do they make friends easily?
yes! surprisingly, from his popularity in the town. he had a bad first impression whoops. but he's just very charming and sweet and wants to be your friend.
26. surprise birthday party! how do they react?
crying. happy crying. but a lot of crying. he won't stop. please stop crying hana. second surprise party would go over better, he'd just cry at the beginning and then have fun at the party.
27. what is their favorite flower, if they have one?
hydrangea.. symbolize heartfelt emotions
28. how does your character feel about wearing jewelry?
neutral? i like putting him in a lot of jewelry, but it's not something he'd do himself. besides like. his ear and nose piercings (and the other one lol) those are kind of special. he's had those since before he can remember
29. if they wear jewelry, what's their favorite piece?
his teal earrings! he was gifted those (one of the like 2 gifts he's received lol) by someone very important to him
30. fashion forward or fashion disaster?
fashion neutral? he's definitely not fashionable when he dresses himself (in the clothes he made himself lmao) but he's not like.. offensively disastrous
31. what kind of underwear does your character wear?
boxer briefs? for comfort. that's hana's goal picking out his own clothes. comfort.
32. do they wear makeup? what kind?
not regularly but he's not against it. he likes looking pretty. he likes eyeliners especially but will sit there and let u put whatever on his face.
33. do they paint their nails?
HELL YEAH he paints his toenails since he works with his hands and it'd chip off. after bath nail painting time. paints baby's claws too.
34. are they quick to get haircuts or do they often let it grow out?
after his introduction to the townspeople with his hair that had been grown out for years and NOT well taken care of.. he keeps up with haircuts now. he doesn't want to give people reasons to dislike him lmao
35. do they know how to whistle?
through the front gap in his fangs yes
36. or how to braid hair?
he knows how to braid his own hair for sure. he hasn't had other hair to practice on but he would know how to braid like.. leather cord or stuff for other crafts projects. so i think he'd be good at it. he'd learn like fancy patterns and such
37. are they scared if anything in nature - bugs, snakes, lightning, being on the water, etc.?
lightning and storms definitely. he spent his formative years under a mountain, safe from all that, any sort of dangerous weather freaks him out.
38. have they ever thought they were about to die?
not that he remembers. but there were times.
39. how do they react to getting sick?
a big baby. snuggled up in a thousand blankets with chicken noodle soup and hot teas.
40. are they afraid of blood?
not especially? he's been injured before and had to patch himself up. bad injuries tho... lots of blood..... he wouldn't do great with that.
41. how do they earn money?
hana builds and repairs stuff for the town mostly in exchange for produce and such. he doesn't really.. have money.
42. are they satisfied with their occupation or long to do something else?
he enjoys helping people, so in that way he's satisfied. he'd rather people were more interested in his side job of repairing old tech and making his own tech stuff but... that's not legal.
43. how creative are they?
quite creative! he has a number of different crafting hobbies and is always looking for more. he's not great at like.. like if you gave him a paintbrush and were like 'paint' he would just paint whatever was in front of him. not some imagined thing.
44. do they know how to draw? how skilled are they?
he's good at like.. accurately drawn schematics? technical drawings. i dont think he would be great at like. portraits tho. like. he could probably draw an accurate face but it'd like completely lifeless.
45. what do they carry around with them during the day (ie in their pockets, a bag, a purse...)
1) a baby 2) his tablet, that's what's with him all the time.. except rn in the story.. when he is without both.. :(
46. do they have a sweet tooth?
OH YEAH. he doesn't get a lot of sweets where he is (he's working on learning how to bake them) so he really enjoys good sweets when he gets his hand on them
47. haute cuisine or cheap eats?
hana likes good homemade food, i guess cheap eats would be the closer of the two
48. do they know how to swim?
HONESTLY.. PROBABLY NOT.. boy has not been around water much
49. do they have any scars? how did they get them?
nah! at this point he is more or less scar free. i'm sure he has a few tiny ones from like.. when baby was playing a bit too wildly or something and he got a nasty little scratch but nothing like... big.
50. what kind of handwriting do they have? neat, messy, cursive,
MESSY. like a kid who was never really taught how to write. he usually writes on his tablet, which has been taught how to recognize his handwriting and converts it to readable text.
BON:
bon can be hard so on questions where it's not really applicable now (like.. favorite foods and the like), i'll just go with what WOULD have been the case. when he was younger.

flavored sparkling waters, he likes the bubbles. he likes high alcohol content drinks, so it does its job.

he likes fresh, citrus-y flavors, whatever category that slots into.

THE ALL POWERFUL ORANGE, a good orange is a treat for bon
4. breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert, snacks - which do they look forward to the most?
snacks, cause he can generally eat them alone and not be judged
5. do they have a food or flavor they absolutely hate?
puddings and yogurts and stuff like that, soft foods
6. can they tolerate spicy food?
a fair amount, but he does have limits (he will not admit it)
7. what is their favorite animal?
farm animals, especially working animals, they're nice and usually calm, bon likes that
8. what do they wear to bed?
either whatever he's wearing at the time he knocks out or nothin
9. what position do they like to sleep in?
huddled in a corner

BOTH! he's not a sleeper. if you find him sleeping its because he was probably up the past 3+ days and he just knocked out.

if he's sleeping cause he hadn't slept the past week, he doesn't wake up easily, but if it's a purposeful rest he wakes up to a pin dropping. also re: bon sleeping, he technically can go without sleep indefinitely but he has to go into his lava form to kinda.. refresh his stats so to speak
12. it's a rainy day, what will they do cooped up inside all day?
pre-incident: read! study! practice magic.
post-incident: think about mortality and stare at a wall
13. do they have a favorite scent or smell?
fresh air on a cool day. but he's also nostalgic about the stink smell of a tavern.
14. what do they smell like? do they wear perfume or cologne?
ash and smoke. and on special days ;) burnt flesh ;) he doesn't wear perfume or cologne, he just smells weird all the time.
15. baths or showers?
showers, a quick spray down and then he's out of the water as quick as possible.
16. how good are they at cooking?
QUITE! bon can cook and he can cook good. he's stayed with a lot of families over the years and learned a lot of good tricks and recipes, plus what he learned from when he was growing up and would somewhat regularly cook for himself.
17. what's their favorite time of year and why?
summer. he does well in the heat. also the days are longest. bon likes it when it's light out.
18. do they have a favorite holiday?
bon doesn't like holidays! cause holidays come with traditions. and traditions come with expectations. and expectations come with punishments.
19. do they prefer buying or receiving gifts?
giving, i guess? receiving gifts can come with a price. but it's nice to give a gift and know you expect nothing in return.
20. how tall are they, and how do they feel about their height?
bonk is 5'9", he's fine with it
21. can they play any instruments?
YES!!! he can play a variety, his favorites are harp and fiddle, though he also can play a mean flute, though that was mostly from his upbringing so he doesn't like it all too much

YES!!!!! he has a most beautiful voice. he can rouse a room with a good folk song or bring a room to tears with a mournful ballad
23. do they talk to themselves?
ahahaha yes. we have already seen this in comic. bon struggles with differentiating between reality and his.. imagination i guess. so. that can often lead to him just talking to himself.
24. do they enjoy music? what kind?
yes! bon enjoys all sorts of music, but mostly songs you can sing along to. bar songs, shanties, ballads, he enjoys them all. he like songs that have an emotion to them if that makes sense.
25. do they make friends easily?
NO. bon is both unfriendly and untrusting. however. if you are nice to him but once........... he Will die for you. and he will die for any child. loves childs.
26. surprise birthday party! how do they react?
POORLY. either confused why people thought it would be a fun idea or angry that he was caught off guard. now... if you do it right..... have the surprise just be like.. a cake waiting at home or something.. a quiet night.. he will appreciate it. he Will die for you.
27. what is their favorite flower, if they have one?
daffodil.. rebirth.. eternal life.. unrequited love.. perfect
28. how does your character feel about wearing jewelry?
he's not a huge fan tbh. makes him feel like someone's shiny show piece. but he does like an earring or two or three

he doesn't wear jewelry regularly :( but he likes earrings! he likes little hoops that go on the top of his big ears

more fashion forward than a disaster. he doesn't dress himself like.. super well.. cause his clothing tends to not last super long, but he knows how to look good

not really? he's had a lot of experience living outdoors so things that may have scared him at one point have been dealt with and most things it's like 'well i cant die so it really doesnt matter', cold and rain it's like 'well ill get real hecked up for a while but.. whatever'

YES! quite a few times, though not anymore lmao. one of the first times he ran away from home and nearly starved to death, the... incident, and when he was turned into a basbeo, just to name a few

pretending like he's not. pushing himself too hard until he cannot pretend anymore. nowadays tho.. he just turn into lava man and boom. all better.
40. are they afraid of blood?
nah, he's seen plenty of it by this point to just not even register it. not even mostly his own! see this isn't a sad answer.

HE DON'T! what use does a dog have for money u feel me

bon was basically a travelling bard at one point and oh boy he longs to go back to those days. his current occupation of 'guy who steals, kidnaps, murders and destroys on command' just isn't fulfilling for him.

i'd say pretty creative. he's not really doing anything with it right now, but he's a pretty imaginative guy.
44. do they know how to draw? how skilled are they?
i think so! i figure that would be part of his lessons when he was younger. so he's probably.. too good at it. opposite of hana, where he's be good at portraiture and like.. pretty scenes. this also makes me think of little bon running around and putting lil devil horns on his mom's portraits

doesn't really have.. a lot of things.. in the same vein tho, that jacket he wears, he's had for a while, and it's been through a lot now (i.e. the missing bottom) but. it's something he repairs and takes care of. it's special to him. for reasons.

not especially, he doesn't like Sugar Sweet stuff, but he does like.. apples n stuff. he'll eat a peach croissant and enjoy it. everything in balance.

cheap eats: more food for less

yes but he doesn't do it anymore cause he'll get too cold and seize up and lava man will just become a rock. he can use like.. hot tubs and very warm baths. he CAN enjoy those.

well! bon had scars previous to his charred limbs (you'll see them soon) from being burned. because of.. reasons. i never know how depressing to get when talking about bon :( anyways, his charred limbs didn't happen immediately after becoming a basbeo. it basically happens when there's like.. a struggle for control between bon, his elemental, and who or whatever (maighstir, priomh, tera, his cuffs, etc.) is trying to control bon's transformation abilities. like either trying to use more power than he's being allowed, or to resist using it at all. they feel weird and crusty and leathery and warm! so the last one is kind of nice. it is unpleasant to hold his hand.

okay I literally have no clue how old this is and if I'm even taking the questions from the right post but here goes I guess? 🙈
<u>5. What is your favorite Color?</u>
PURPLE
<u>9. How tall are you?</u>
about 1,70 meters or 5'7"

size 40-41, I think that's about 8 in US sizes?

uhhh good question... not sure if it counts but I guess I'm quite good at a lot if things but can't do anything extraordinarily well?

Absolutely not. Due to family history and a lot of other things I'm actually against it a lot but people can do whatever they feel like is right for them as long as they don't harm others with it.
<u>21. Have you ever been to the hospital?</u>
Yes, quite a lot actually. practically grew up in hospitals as a baby because of kidney issues, broke both my legs with 4 years old, had to revisit for tests a lot during my childhood because of the kidney issue. it calmed down afterwards until I was back in hospital last year because of my terrible mental health and I'm currently in a rehabilitation clinic for it as well.

Shower's because we don't have a bathtub
<u>25. What color socks are you wearing?</u>
currently none, I love going barefoot, but usually I wear white, gray or black. I know... I'm a bad gay.. no rainbow socks (;ŏ﹏ŏ)

you know.... I hate this question with a passion even though I love music so I'll just throw in my yt-playlist here and everyone who's interested can look through it to get a picture xD not sorted in any way and not a conclusive list at all, I just add songs as I find them

mostly just one at a time but I've got two different ones. one is the normal fluffy kinda pillow, the other is made of some kinda foam material and rather thin.
<u>31. What position do you usually sleep in?</u>
I'm always lying on the side! have been doing that since I was a baby too.
<u>32. How big is your house?</u>
compared to what? 🙈 I'd say decent size for 5 people to live in, would have space for 1-2 more if rooms were used differently but definitely not enough to comfortably live with 12 or even more people like my family used to. we've got like 3 proper sleeping rooms (one of which is the attic so not very nice in terms of heat and the staircase is smack in the middle of the room), a kitchen, a dining room, a big living room, a tiny bathroom that barely fits a toilet and shower, and the basement is a mix of storage, electrics and stuff, washing room/utility room and it's got another smaller room that's been turned back into a small workshop but used to be the room of my brother and later my grandmother.
<u>33. What do you typically have for breakfast?</u>
I guess this is where it shows that I'm german but we usually just eat bread (preferably whole grain) with cheese or slices of salami or ..meat sausage? is that a proper translation? 🤨 idk... it's rather simple really. on the weekend maybe buns and boiled eggs. on the occasion that I'm too tired for it or don't have enough time I eat cereals but it's not very common when I'm at work/school

Yes!! I did last year when I was in the hospital and it was super fun! was quite good at it as well, even for my first try 😤

I think about 3 days? if we count "barely unconscious for a few hours" as sleep that is... otherwise no clue...my memory of the bad sleepless time is quite hazy lol
<u>39. Do you have any scars?</u>
yeah, quite a few tbh. got 2 huge ones from surgeries due to my kidney issues, well they look like 2 but it's actually multiple ones since they simply cut open party of the old ones again, tiny hooman apparently have very little skin. then I got some other ones here and there from accidents, general dumbness, etc, like when I cut through my sunday morning bun and almost cut half of the tip of my finger off because my mother sharpened the knife and didn't tell me or that time as a kid I couldn't wait for my ironing pearl pictures to be done and burned myself on the hot iron, mostly stuff like that.
<u>40. Have you ever had a secret admirer?</u>
I mean.. if they're a secret... how would I know? ;) not sure if it counts that it took me months to realize I had a crush on my best friend and the feelings were reciprocated and I was too blind to see the signs?

Nope. People actually think I'm lying more often than I lie... so.... :/

I'm.. honestly not sure what this one means? like, am I able to judge what kind of character a person has after barely meeting them or smth? if so, I'm terrible at it

in german? nope. in english? hmm hard to judge since I rarely hear myself speak. I think the stuff I do know how to pronounce is mostly okay but since I learned it through reading I'm simply unsure of a lot of pronunciations. 'also'.... I can not for the life of me pronouns that word no matter how many times I hear it... it's kinda become a quirk after some classmates pointed it out to me and I'm incredibly aware how terrible I say the word but.... just can't get rid of it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I.. actually really love the way my best friend talks? 👉👈 they're french btw. just... typical me for struggling to understand them though, already terrible at it in german too...

Definitely messy. my allergies did not like this post trying to clean and tidy up more often though. my depression does not like this post either

sometimes. quite a bit when watching movies or if I mess stuff up

I was in a choir for a few years when I went to 'middle school' and I had like one solo part once but other than that I can't really say because I barely ever sing in front of people

this question is currently my absolute nemesis.. I've got suuuper duper long hair and have had it ever since elementary school and I used to be super happy with it and sometimes I still am happy with it but other days, depending on where I'm at genderwise, I absolutely hate it and I just want to take the closest scissors and cut it all off... currently haven't had the guts to look for new hair styles though... but in other people? or women more specifically? I love long hair 🥺

again, easier question: what am I not allergic to... it's... a lot... like, really a lot. with the test on the skin of my arm I reacted to every single substance and the more thorough blood test lead to much of the same result. the absolute worst are birch trees (pitty, love those), then the usual pollen of pretty much every tree or flower, all animals with fur or feathers, dust and... yeah list goes on and on, you get the picture... :/

no.. have tried to multiple times in the past but never made it more than a week... too depressing to write and read... the therapist at the rehab clinic is currently forcing me to try a positivity diary for the millionths time, can't even get that done each day even though I'm doing it on my phone and get notifications to do it each evening...
<u>88. What do your parents do?</u>
making my life hell lol.. okay on a serious note, my father was a car electrician, he's retired by now, my mother is a housewife, she used to work different jobs before her first kid, later on she took care of my grandmother who was suffering from dementia, got some money and retirement points for that too.

I-... I don't know? it's weird because I both feel a lot younger and a lot older than I am rn....
<u>90. What makes you angry?</u>
another tough question... I actually have anger issues in that way that I'm barely capable of feeling anger... used to be worse but I already worked a lot on it in therapy so there's at least some there now... in the past I simply started to cry and felt overwhelmed by sadness whenever I was supposed to feel anger... so I can't tell very well what makes me angry because I first have to realize that I'm feeling anger or more like should be feeling it....
<u>91. Do you like your own name?</u>
Not really, no, but I guess I finally figured out some reasons why.. I've recently started going by a bit of a different name too but only my closest friends know so far and I'm not sure if I'll be using it irl at all..
<u>96. How did you get your name?</u>
I'm still trying to get my mother to admit that she named me after this song but she keeps denying it.. she's a fan of this band so it would have fit.. but she keeps saying she just liked the name, no long thought process behind it..
my chosen name is a bit of a different story. an ex friend I got to know through yt gave me that nickname almost 10 years ago after I complained that you can't make a shorter nickname out of my birthname and it's also the name of s character I like, especially his voice, and... idk it just feels more gender neutral and I simply feel comfortable with it. it just fit.
<u>100. Color of your room?</u>
same as question 5: Purple 🥰 or... well half the walls are purple, the other half is white
phew... can't believe I made it through all of these....
in case people haven't noticed yet, I'm currently kinda getting back into tumblr? I think I've already stayed a lot longer than any times I tried getting back before. it mostly started because we've got super bad wifi at the clinc I'm at rn and reddit takes up waaayy too much mobile data and... idk, I guess I just missed the vibe of tumblr
I'm not sure how long I'll be able to stick around but we'll see

88 Important Truths I Have Learned About Life
Everyone gets drilled with certain lessons in life. Sometimes it takes repeated demonstrations of a given law of life to really get it into your skull, and other times one powerful experience drives the point home once forever. Here are 88 things I’ve discovered about life, the world, and its inhabitants by this point in my short time on earth.
1. You can’t change other people, and it’s rude to try.
2. It is a hundred times more difficult to burn calories than to refrain from consuming them in the first place.
3. If you’re talking to someone you don’t know well, you may be talking to someone who knows way more about whatever you’re talking about than you do.
4. The cheapest and most expensive models are usually both bad deals.
5. Everyone likes somebody who gets to the point quickly.
6. Bad moods will come and go your whole life, and trying to force them away makes them run deeper and last longer.
7. Children are remarkably honest creatures until we teach them not to be.
8. If everyone in the TV show you’re watching is good-looking, it’s not worth watching.
9. Yelling always makes things worse.
10. Whenever you’re worried about what others will think of you, you’re really just worried about what you’ll think of you.
11. Every problem you have is your responsibility, regardless of who caused it.
