a sad steddie ficlet for mother's day

tw: discussion of the death of a parent

Eddie Munson doesn’t have an easy time of it on Mother’s Day.

Steve figures as much as he gingerly walks up the front steps of the Munson’s home and raps on the front door. He’d woken up far too early for a day off work and perhaps selfishly, he felt lonely waking up to an empty house on Mother’s Day, a day he hadn’t spent with his own mother in three years.

As he knocks on the front door, the fly-screen frame making a tinny sound under his knuckles, he tries to convince himself to be thankful that his mother is here.

Well, not in Hawkins. But she's somewhere. He just isn’t sure where seeing as yet another business trip turned into a getaway weekend with friends that turned into an exotic vacation before going right back around to being an extended business trip.

He stops mid-knock, panic creeping into his chest as he considers the early hour - 8am being far too early for notorious not-before-noon Eddie.

But before he can take a step backwards and slowly make his way to the safety of his precious Beemer parked conspicuously right outside, the door opens revealing a worried and rushed Wayne, dressed for work.

The man closes his eyes, seemingly relieved at Steve’s presence. He makes quick work of scooping up his work boots (always sitting just inside the door) and crowds Steve on the small front stoop.

“Steve,” he whispers, leaving the door ajar, “Glad you’re here, my boy. Got called into work.”

“Is… is Eddie up yet?” Steve stutters.

“He’s inside watching TV,” Wayne replies, voice low, “Gotta warn you, kid, today is very hard for him.”

He cranes his neck to peek inside. Eddie is sitting on the couch, cradling something in his lap with a throw blanket over his knees. His eyes are glazed over, staring at the TV as he twists strands of his hair around his finger.

“Eddie,” Wayne calls, voice laced with the faint hope of a response, “I’ll be back tonight, okay?”

Eddie gives a half-hearted grunt, “Whatever.”

Wayne forces himself down the front steps and off to his truck, hesitating one last time as he opens his truck door and waves goodbye.

Steve steps inside, giving a small and admittedly just plain stupid wave from his hip. Eddie's eyes snap straight at him, glaring like he could shoot laser beams from his eyeballs if he tried hard enough.

“Oh, great,” he says, feigning a harsh edge as he rolls his eyes, “You’re here.”

Steve knows this tactic well, Eddie had done it a lot when he was recovering in hospital. But the pang in his chest, the feeling of rejection, of being turned away, hurts nonetheless.

He nods, more to himself to force himself into the kitchen to fix Eddie some breakfast. He decides on a bowl of Honeycombs, no milk. He will settle for the odd crunching mouthful of dried cereal bits if it means Eddie eating something.

“Why aren’t you at home serving up Mommy’s breakfast in bed?” Eddie seethes as Steve places the cereal box back in the cupboard.

He ignores him for as long as it takes him to move from the kitchen to the couch.

“Eds, my parents aren’t home,” he replies, letting the cereal bowl hit the coffee table with a pointed thud.

Eddie shirks away, clutching a big square book to his chest.

It’s a photo album.

After a long moment of only the sounds of a rather noisy toy commercial on the television filling the room, Eddie sighs heavily.

“I know.”

“Do you need me to leave you alone?” Steve asks, tone even and serious, despite not wanting to do such a thing, especially as his question conjures up a well of tears in Eddie’s already glassy eyes.

“Steve, I…” Eddie starts, voice low as he scrubs a hand over his face, “I won’t be very good company today.”

“It’s okay,” he says, lowering onto the couch.

He looks Eddie over - he is restless. Knee bopping on the spot, hair more matted than Steve initially thought. He isn't wearing his signature rings or his wristwatch. And he looks like he hasn't had an ounce of sleep.

Eddie mumbles something he doesn’t quite catch and shakes his head, the frizz and tangle caused by worried fingers adding an extra bounce. He fluffs the blanket to cover them both.

“Can we just sit here?” he asks, leaning in.

He wipes his nose on his (an old blue sweater of Steve’s that had long ceased being his own) sleeve.

Steve wraps a protective arm around him as he shifts closer, “Of course, baby.”

Eddie snuffles, barely getting out his words for tears, “I was going to look at pictures of my Mom.”

He covers his face with his hands, letting the album go. Reflexes kicking in, Steve catches it just before it slides off the blanket. He sets it by his side, leaning in close to ask, “How about I take some pictures out for you to look at, hmm?”

“‘Kay,” he agrees meekly.

Steve soon discovers why Eddie has been sitting here just holding the photo album labelled 'Precious Memories'. It is filled with pictures of his father, Al - mostly looking like a fun-loving young man, far from Eddie’s descriptions and Wayne’s understandably harsh words. There are many pictures of Al and Wayne, often featuring an older man Steve assumes is their father.

He can’t help the odd giggle that escapes him looking at pictures of baby Eddie, including one of him crying with a face covered in chocolate.

Eddie barely registers, instead looking ahead to the Sunday morning cartoons on the television. Usually, he’d be laughing at Looney Tunes outwitting each other with sticks of dynamite, but today he just curls in on himself further and further, pulling the blanket up tight to his neck.

There is only a sprinkling of photographs of Eddie’s mother, starting about halfway through the book. Her dark brown hair is striking, similar to Eddie’s, only straightened out with its styling.

Steve gets to work flapping back stubborn sheets of acetate stuck to thick pages in order to free each picture. He picks them out one by one until he has a pile of about a dozen, all curling from years-old backing glue and tape strips.

“Here you go, Eds.”

He hands over a picture of Eddie, aged about six and dressed as a witch alongside his beaming mother donning a long grey beard and an electric blue wizard's hat.

A smile teases at Eddie’s lips, skin pulling at the scar on his jawline.

He reaches for a single Honeycomb.

“Thank you, Steve,” he says, pressing the photograph to his chest.

Thinking thoughts

As we know, Taylor never does anything arbitrary. Thinking about the order of the tracklist…why is But Daddy I Love Him track 6? She puts her most raw, vulnerable, emotional songs as track 5, but her track 6’s tend to be more upbeat bops but with a hint of sadness to them. It never made sense on Red why she put 22 directly after All Too Well—until we heard the 10min version, and realized she was celebrating her 22nd birthday after having the worst 21st birthday. It gave so much more depth and a twinge of heartbreak to 22. So now: why BDILH at track 6? After the heartbreak of London, of finally pulling the plug on a 6 year relationship with no pulse, she’s free! She wants to gallop through a field in her sundress and speed off with a wild boy and all his wild joy who makes her FEEL things!! She don’t give a damn what ANYONE thinks about him!! Except-oh wait- the one person(s) whose opinions are the only ones she’s ever actually cared about: her fans. Taylor’s unadulterated devotion to her fans has always been what sets her apart from the pack, in my mind at least. She cares what we think. SHE INVITED Y’ALL TO HER GD HOUSE BECAUSE SHE WANTED FANS TO HEAR HER MUSIC FIRST. She knows what we like, she talks to us online, she makes it all fun and worthwhile for us. Because she knows that we’re the ones who listen to her, who fill all those stadium seats. We’ve always supported her no matter what and defended her and she loves her fans for that. But taking that miracle move-on drug—that was the first (kind of major) time that she saw that support falter. She must’ve felt so betrayed. And that’s gotta hurt- watching the one group of people who you have always counted on to have your back without fail suddenly *checks notes* writing petitions protesting your rebound relationship? Could never be me but anywho…

I think that’s what her track 6’s are. Track six is her saying “I’m all good, I’m happy now, but I still have some of the hurt from what happened with track 5”. Like these songs honestly could’ve been track 5s with these nuggets of vulnerability she sprinkles in there, but they’re kinda too Over It to care anymore.

reasonings behind songs under the cut!

Sad Machine: "and though i know, since you awakened her again, she depends on you, she depends on you! she'll go alone, and never speak of this again, we depend on you, we depend on you [..] is anyone there? anyone else, anyone else, anyone else-" // this was the opening song on my Dominion Viking playlist! :D i will gladly take the opportunities to do musical callbacks.

History Repeating: "so then what to do when we know what's coming? stay and see it through, or start running? [..] over and over, i know i'm not alone here [..] don't say anything, i know where we've been, and i've got a feeling this is history repeating! when this crashes down i won't be around, 'cause i've got a feeling this is history repeating now!" // there's a time loop joke in here, obviously, what with "history repeating" being very literal. Navigator's involvement in all of this is... interesting? he's omniscient, he knows what's happening, but for once this isn't history repeating like it always has-- something has changed, and everyone needs to make a choice on what to do about it.

I.D.: "now everything inside of me is calling out "are you listening?" [..] i've been keeping this thought that if i spend all my time as what i'm not that i would find it in me to tell you to leave, but here you are and you won't [..] it hasn't been the same since you told me your name" // the way Navigator and Sapphire treat each other is. so much. i keep thinking about Nav telling Sapph he hates talking to them and that they won't speak again. theyre a mismatched pair that almost fit together, but not quite, and the more Sapphire spirals the less Navigator wants to do with her.

The Island / Just Hesitation (HES3 Edit): "what are you waiting for? as we go towards the light" // this is a weird one. Just Hesitation isn't on Spotify, so i had to sub in the song it samples from. which still works! but the intention is for it to be Just Hesitation. i wrote a whole ramble about it as a song and why it has Navigator vibes for me. thanks for coming to my ted talk

Dreamland: "does everybody live in a dreamland? is this dreamland all that we know? [..] i'm tired of feeling like i'll never serve a purpose! future killers, smoke and mirrors, yeah just be yourself! [..] searching the universe for something we can do, and living to fight another day! [..] I GOTTA GET OUT OF THIS WASTELAND, 'CAUSE THIS WASTELAND AIN'T HOME!" // i will readily admit that this is a targeted attack. this also is kinda pulling on my theory about where Navigator came from and what happened to him before TSMP.

On the Run: [instrumental] // this is a bop. also something something why are you running / what are you running from, although i guess right now we don't know if Navigator is running from (or to?) anything.

Nostalgic Vibes: "so many places i could be, sense of adventure got me beat, i've got it, you want me [..] mystery surrounds you, my love, don't just walk away! [..] let me recall for a while, you've got to set me free, yeah" // On the Run, Nostalgic Vibes, and Donderdag are in the segment i like to call "no thoughts just vibes". hope this helps.

Donderdag: [instrumental] // the thing with including instrumentals on these is it's really hard for me to explain why. there's no lyrics to point at and i'm not very articulate when it comes to explaining why instrumentals stand out to me. the vibes are there and it's a nice transition between Nostalgic Vibes and Hydrogenuine.

Hydrogenuine: "care to play a game? this experiment has chemically altered my brain! [..] 11 is the number i seem assigned to, inversions of an opposite truth aligns you, directions like the back of your hand will guide you, i am simply here to assist and remind you! i am simply here to assist and remind you!" // this was on the Viking & Ruby playlist for Navigator purposes and i'm bringing it back. the chorus is what really drives this for me and i cannot let it go. we need more Navigator and Ruby interactions please please please please please

Radar: "trouble on a radar, just gonna fly right under!" // this was a contender for a tViking song (before Navigator was even a thing) but got dropped from the playlist early on. i think it's fun to bring it back for Nav considering him being the warning sign and the thing with tViking going under the radar.

Dreamcatcher: "close my eyes and i'm predictable, i'm invincible, for you [..] i'm afraid i'm not enough. I'M NOT ENOUGH! [..] circles, cycles, why do you torture me? dreamcatcher, i'm falling but not asleep!" // shoutouts to Solar for saying the worlds "circles, cycles" in chat during a Sapphire lore scene and this entire song playing in my head at 2x speed.

WHAT YOU GONNA DO??? - "shiny on the surface, rotten on the inside [..] you got control, got my attention! make me tap and scroll, you got control, you got my attention! you got us listening, so what you gonna do, now what you gonna do with it? [..] so who am i, you decide, inside out you read my mind, what you gonna do with it?" // this is a general TSMP song and one that would've made it onto the Viking & Ruby playlist if i'd thought of it in time. the chorus and ending are peak Navigator vibes, though. "so who am i, you decide" is something i'm calling attention to as a fun meta thing, though, seeing as basically everything about Nav is speculation or in response to something.

ØCULIST: "white noise, i'm tied down from the first time i heard it! so, my sister static, hold on my hardened heart! [..] i can't help but can assist, see through you like an oculist, a universal hologram, these crimes will make you hollow, man!" // i love area 11 but trying to get me to explain how any of their songs relate to the blorbo of the hour is a losing battle.

Redshift: "we accelerate, we separate and fragment! we accelerate, through the estate of outer space! we accelerate! it appears that heaven's been abandoned [..] i climbed down from the wall where i sit and search for a source of light other than our dear sun, the lone star [..] a supergiant erupts into a supernova! the ultimate sacrifice, and we are the descendants!" // Aces asked me a while ago if Redshift is a Navigator song and it was on the "maybe" table for a while. then i went through like 5 different Enter Shikari songs for this playlist and it kept being not-quite-right until i pressed play on Redshift and it all clicked into place. hey, Navigator, how does it feel knowing you're the only one that knows about the missing piece? how does it feel subbing in for space himself? how does it feel being created because someone else is gone?

Don't Try - [Everything Everything Remix]: "the clock is ticking, meanwhile your life, your life is wasting [..] i know you mean a long time, saw your mask in the mirror, and you don't want to be here anymore [..] and yeah there's nothing alright, but you're here and you're glowing, so why you wanna keep it all inside? don't try to hide it!" // this is kinda where my characterization of Navigator starts to settle in, i think. he's tired but obligated to be who he is. plus, y'know, he's having to literally hide his existence, but that's going to fall apart no matter how hard he tries. note: the Spotify lyrics are wrong. there's two versions of this song with completely different lyrics.

Underline the Black: "how can i forget, what reason is left? when i looked at myself, i was somebody else [..] i just look, don't feel like myself at all, i'm just waiting for the axe to fall, and they're still waiting for their lives to start" // another case of "taking some lyrics literally" for the fun of it. tViking being an anomaly and also being the one Navigator is hijacking is a fun combination. there's also whatever Navigator might've been before, and what he's become to fill his role. is there still a way out or is this his life forever? everything's still at the beginning, but he's seen this play out so many times before.

Younger: "lie in wait by the gleaming city gate, try not to lose sight of the mission! [..] moment close at hand, half of you will never understand, and it doesn't really matter [..] it never hurts to give thanks to the navigator, even when he's spitting out random numbers." // another carry-over from the Viking and Ruby playlist, suggested by Charm! Naaaav what is your deaaaaaal

Undercover Agents: "i am currently under construction, thank you for your patience. we veneer, unveil, we present a cold disguise, we're all undercover agents [..] and i said if you want to go far and wide now, we've got to go together! [..] yeah i'm howling, can you hear us now? i was seeking another life and the moon was so bright! [..] it's only in our heads." // using this song in particular is weird for me because it's so heavily ingrained as another character. but that other character has some thematic overlap with Navigator, so it makes sense that the song clicks too.

Mirror: "yeah, do your worst all at once! i know what you want from me, from me, i know what you're thinking! [..] i'm tired of your questioning, you're cut down too easily, i don't know what's good for me, i can't decide [..] you're nearly there, keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going, it will all be okay in the end" // more Navigator and Sapphire struggling with each other. the ending is kind of their justifications to themselves: they need to keep going because there has to be a light at the end of this somewhere. they can both be free somehow. in the meantime, though, they're going to fight and they're going to tear each other down as much as they build each other up. "you and i are not going to talk again." "i missed talking to you."

Let's Get This Over With: "even when you're out of work, you still have a job to do! even when you don't know what it is, your job knows what it is. what it is, is it's coming to get you, i'm talking to myself even when i'm saying "you" [..] after all the spelling mistakes, after all the groping in the dark, can this page of strange gibberish get a final punctuation mark? I finally listened to Hadestown! 🎉

Starting with the Original Cast Recording, ‘cause might as well do it in release order. Loved it! Groovy music. Snickered. Cried. Wrote down my reaction as I went, so if you're chill with rambled thoughts and observations, here you go lol

A Hard Day's Night: Catchy, she's so nice! She's like, a classic. Wasn't there that movie made with this same name or am I tripping? Dude making these reviews is like, giving me carpal tunnel I've never typed this much b4 !! Erm,,, but yea :/ this song is just a classic that's all I gotta say !!!

I Should Have Known Better: Harmonica goes insane honestly. Uh this song confused me 😭 like. i'm stupid??? I don't know girls this one through me for a loop. At first I was like, "Dang this girl's a runner she's out with other guys '-'" and then for a brief moment I was like no, "Okay maybe she's loyal she's just stupid and doesn't know what to say when the guy compliments her or something" I'm leaning towards the second option but the title still trips me up like, I should have known better what is that supposed to mean 😭😭??? Likeee,, "I should have known better that a girl like you would run off with different men" or "I should have known better that a ditzy girl like you wouldn't know what to say when I told you I love you" ?? I'm confuseddddd. Maybe I'm stupid. Help me 😭😭!!

If I Fell: THE DRUMS!?? Hellooo?? They're so cute !!!! They're so faint yet full it's so.. uh girl idk they're striking a chord with me. Was there a looping machine ??? Was that a thing in the 60s ?? I'm Happy Just To Dance With You: This song has like, melancholic undertones 😭 it makes me depressed. Not like, super sad but it's like, "Once this dance is over, I'll still love you" or something like that. Idk she's just so sad :(((( but I actually really like this track ! She's so sad I love it!!!

And I Love Her: erm, she's a bit too slow and sweet for me! I can imagine that under the right circumstances this song would be an absolute banger and just get me in my feels but right now a loud english class probs isn't the environment for this music idk.. but uhhhhh yeah. I WASN'T bored per se just mildly amused by her.

Tell Me Why: Girlllll we're getting drama???? Why this girl crying 😭 and lying ?! 😭😭 I'll tell you what these girls are! toxiccccc !!! Is it the same girl or multiple?? Because omg it's actually insane these girls are crazy or this one particular girl is just an absolute mad woman I can't tell 😭😭 uh but overall it's a pretty energetic song it's pretty good 👍

Can't Buy Me Love: Okay I heard the first line or whatever and I was like, "sugar daddy :3" what. girl nevermind. He wants a girl who doesn't want material things from him that's so sweet!! Apparently Paul and John turned their backs on Money from their previous album but whatevs I get it. Sometimes people are in a mood 👀. Uh I liked the song but the girl could bark she was a little loud for me idk 😭

Any Time At All: This song sounds a bit more modern idk but oh em gee he's gonna be there for you! Not in like a romantic way (but it could totally be seen as such) but in like a friendly sweet way !! Super cute idea for a song. Unfortunately Bruno Mars has already capitalized on such an idea with that one song that I cannot remember for the life of me rn idk

I'll Cry Instead: Teehee this song is evil >:3 !!! Revenge is real and this girl is gonna be a victim!!! I love itttt it's so catchy and just makes you wanna bop your head along with it. 10/10 for her, she was exquisite.

Things We Said Today: A parting song 🤨 hmm interestinggggg. Girl they had A LOT to say in this apparently 'cause looking at the lyrics, it reads like a short story. I mean, I know that is technically what a song is but most of the time the songs read like poems this one goes crazy (and yes I know, some parts are repeated) but OMG she was a lot !!! Charming track but I didn't really groove with this one!!!

When I Get Home: okay when I read the title I thought this song was a threat I'm not gonna lie to you 😭😭.. it still seems like a threat to me. ALSO these songs need some gut to them !! These tracks have the potential to sound more angry but they won't do it and I'm trying to understand why. The Beatles have made some angry sounding songs before (but that's for a later albums) and they've all sounded fantastic. I get that the songs at the time (60s) were all lovey dovey and cute and not so aggressive but RAAHHHHH it's so frustrating to hear the same thing over and over again. But anyway yeah I feel like this song was just too repetitive for me :/ EDIT: okay listened to this song multiple times I completely misunderstood it but the rant is STAYING !!!!!

You Can't Do That: uh this girl's a runner !!! Quick someone get her, someone watch her 😭😭😭 this song is a pretty tame response to the knowledge that your girl is talking to other people. Also this dude is oddly obsessed with his reputation like, boy, reputation don't mean nothing if your girl doesn't even respect you that much ?? I don't know i've been mean with these reviews don't mind me I'm just crazyyyy this album review has been a mess 😭

I'll Be Back: this relationship is not healthy wut. He left her just to see if she would chase after him. You know what good on you girl 'cause that was a crazy thing to do on his part. Uhm overall (despite the weirdness in the relationship dynamic) I think it was the perfect track to close out an album with. It's not using all the tricks in the playbook but it's also not completely lacking either !! It's was also a very chillaxed song and not too overbearing. I liked it!! Probs won't listen again but idk I could totally be lying don't listen to me!

Really good mix that unlike a lot of Waters of Nazareth mixes doesn't go super overboard. Manages to juggle the 11 (!) songs its using really well and is one of my go to songs to put on while absolutely throwing my "academic career".

Good classic hardcore complete with a goofy whimsical ass section in the middle of it. Uhh like seriously the part starting at 2:21 is so different from the other halves its sandwiched between I love it so much. Also there's an assload of ytpmvs of this song.

I love this song so fucking much. Peak tbh. The fucking guitar, the little sad section where the vocals gradually layer and build up to the finale, Just the overall vibes, its all just so good. Also Weezer lmao.

I cant even begin to explain what a mashup tournament is concisely in this already long-ass post so this is gonna be complete nonsense if you don't already know what I mean. This is probably one of the best songs from the entirety of TFA, perfect representation of the contestent its for. The fuckin part where Lifetime Achievement award gets pitch-corrected to sound like Harder Better Faster Stronger makes me levitate. Leans a little too hard into FNAF sources near the end but otherwise balances H3M's arsenal really well.

Another song from a mashup tournament, but a different one. Pretty much exactly what a good bracket theme needs to be, its hype as all hell and showcases all the characters really good while still being mostly cohesive. Its a miracle that a mashup of 29 songs goes as hard as it does without anything going too off-beat / key.

A really good reimagining of one of my favorite albums of all time. I actually kinda like some of the songs on this more that the original album (shoutout to Superheros for using the whos been sleeping in my bed sample more that shit goes so hard) and the new vocals are all really good too. I love the fact that its also half mashups - half complete remakes / remixes, gives the best of both worlds. Obviously the original Discovery album is still the goat and this wouldn't exist with out it but I still really appreciate this for what it is.

Crabs top 10 video game soundtracks

This here is a list of my top 10 favorite video game soundtracks from games I have played (for the purposes of this ranking, franchises will only have one spot on the list so I can't just fill the whole list with fire emblem)

10. Deemo

Deemo is this little obscure and niche rythm game that I have played on and off for many years now. The entire game is just a vibe, but the songs are all very awesome and there are SO MANY to pick from, it's honestly pretty surprising just how many bangers there are, taking into account the sheer amount of songs. My favorite will always be "Metal Hypnotised" even if it doesn't really match the vibe of the rest of the game.

9. Sly Cooper 2

Sly Cooper is a series from my childhood, I played this a lot back in the day so I have a lot of nostalgia for it. My favorite game in the series just so happens to be the second game which is filled with so many great tracks, ESPECIALLY the paris level. That's where all the good stuff is at, "Paris rooftops" especially is great for a nice chill theme, but I cannot deny that all the versions of the "Nightclub" track including "Nightclub", "Dimitri Battle" and "Following Dimitri" just cannot be beat.

8. Hollow Knight

Hollow knight has some great music, especially for the bosses in the game. I really like the orchestral vibe and a lot of the boss music fits the fights very well. I really like that the music for the titular Hollow Knight has a bit of a sad vibe, it's a great song and it gets even better when you learn the lore of the guy. That said, I gotta shout out my guy Grimm with his awesome battle music "The Grimm Troupe" It just goes so hard and is so extra in the best way.

7. Splatoon 2

Splatoon 2 just has some great music in general, especially octo expansion, which I have been playing a little bit on and off recently. It's all just so unique and I haven't quite heard anything like it. It really is almost just it's own genre. Always gets me pumped and is very hard not to bop to. My favorite track is probably "Fly Octo Fly" but the others like "Calamari Inkantation" and "Bomb Rush Blush" also just slap so hard.

6. Dark Souls

Every game in the Dark Souls series has great music, including Elden Ring and Bloodborne, but I have chosen the first game for my list because all of the music in that game is so iconic. The tracks are all so hauntingly beautiful and all fit the vibe of the game so well. It's all so melancholic in the best way. While "Gwyn, Lord of Cinder" always hits the feels and "Firelink Shrine" always makes me feel safe and nostalgic, I have chosen "Dark Sun Gwyndolin" not only because I love the guy, but because the theme itself is just so calm and haunting in a way I really enjoy.

5. Child of Light

A quaint little rpg with heavy fairy tale vibes, and the music heavily reflects this. It is such a beautiful soundtrack and I just can't help but love it, even if a lot of the melodies are the same. But come on! People have won figure skating competitions to these songs, you gotta love them. My favorite is definitely "Off to Sleep" that plays at the end of the game but "Final Breath", "Aurora's theme" and "Pilgrims on a long journey" all slap also, the last being the before mentioned figure skating song.

4. Fire Emblem

Now, am I cheating here by not picking a specific game? maybe. Do I care? no. Do you care? probably not, and if you do, bugger off! Anyway it had to be here, it's my favorite franchise ever and the music is great. My biggest problem is that it isn't on spotify and that I wasn't into fe when I listened to music on youtube and that's why it isn't higher. The music in all the games are hype as fuck but the highest points in the series are probably FeEchoes and Fe3h. My favorite track of all just so happens to be from echoes, that being the theme of the one and only Berkut, known as "Pride and Arrogance" It just fits him so well and it just goes so hard I cannot deny it it's spot here. "Lady of the Plains" is a classic tho and "Fodlan Winds" go hard as fuck.

3. Shantae and the Pirate's Curse

Now, all the shantae games have fantastic music, but Pirates curse is just a cut above the rest imo. The vibes are great, they're mostly upbeat and are all fantastic, especially all music from zombie island. I also have a lot of old great memories with this series which also helps quite a bit tbf. I mentioned zombie island and that's because they have three great tracks in "Rave in the Grave", "Run, Run Rottytop" and "Rottytops", while I love all, I am choosing rave in the grave here, but do feel free to listen to the others, and also just the rest of the ost, they're all bangers.

2. Katana Zero

An absolutely fantastic soundtrack to an absolutely fantastic game, the general vibe (idk what to call it, synth maybe? for most of it?) is just fantastic for this game specifically and there is just such a wide variety of emotions and vibes that this collection encompasses. My favorite however that I keep coming back to however is "Rain on Brick" the title theme, it is just so fantastically melancholic in exactly the way I need it to be, I will however also recommend you to go listen to sneaky driver, that is also a great track.

Oneshot

And it's not even close, this soundtrack is so damn good it's the only thing I listened to for, like, at least a week after I finished the game and I still listen to it regularly. The whole album for the soundtrack is my go to study music, my comfort playlist has 32 songs and 6 of them are from oneshot and I could definitly add more AND I'm pretty sure that the track called "Niko and the World Machine" is in my top 3 songs listened to of all time, that said the song I have decided to show you is the song called "Eleventh Hour" which is also very great.

Finally got my Lark Oak character playlist breakdown done, hope y’all enjoy.

Fair warning it is long and sad, cw for mentions of sexual assault in the song cut corners on short walks

We are the kids: I think I found this one on someone else’s Lark playlist and I think it really fits him. “We are the kids that you never can kill” is what Lark thinks of himself and the other s1 kids. And the bit that’s like “i rip holes in my shirt/there’s mud on my shoes/there’s sun on my skin/i am brand new” really represents his chaotic youthful nature and just really speaks to him as a kid. “We howl at the moon” is him and Sparrow because you know for a fact they howled at the moon together because hashtag love wolf am i right.

Always gold: sad brother song !! this one’s just about like brothers growing apart and being all angsty and sad and i thought it fit. “You would kill for me/and I knew that I'd do the same” is a very Oak twins attitude. Technically the song would be from Sparrow’s perspective with the lines “we were opposites at birth/i was steady as a hammer/no one worried cuz they knew just where i’d be/and they said you were the crooked kind” i think these lines really just demonstrate the difference between the two brothers, but more importantly the difference in how everyone else viewed the two especially after the rogue card was drawn. Everyone views Lark as ‘the crooked one’ ‘the angry one’ ‘the problem twin’ meanwhile Sparrow gets swept in the shadow and no one worries or thinks too much of him, because he’s ‘easier’ to deal with than Lark is. Also all the lyrics about everything leaving and dying and then the other person being like “i’ll always be here for you’ is Very Lark vs Sparrow energy. Lark is pessimistic and angry and Sparrow, for better or for worse, will always welcome him in. no matter what atrocities he commits along the way.

Used to the darkness: the sound of this one just felt very Lark to me. The heavy, dark sound suits him well I think. Also the title, he’s been through so much and has been used to fighting and killing and all sorts of other shit since he was like 13 in the forgotten realms, the dude’s absolutely used to the darkness, if you will.

I was just a kid: “i was just a kid/i needed answers/i pulled the trigger/and nothing happened” Lark was just a kid when he stabbed his father. He was just a sad angry kid, manipulated into making a bad decision. He ‘pulled the trigger’ and let the doodler loose. A mistake he will work tirelessly to fix.

The devil you know: this one just fucking BOPS. pretty much the only reason this one’s on here is because of nark/Nicky. Kind of a cute little ship song for them ig.

Icarus: gotta be honest i just really like this song and it has similar Vibes as Lark in my head, i don’t have much concrete evidence for why this one fits Lark. The lyrics ‘icarus is flying too close to the sun” can be read as like, Lark throwing himself into fights against the doodler/other monsters in a wreckless attempt to make himself feel better for causing the end of the world, kinda.

I wanna be your slave: straight up nark. This song just screams nark to me. It works both ways in my mind, it could be about either of them.

Discord: So replace ‘discord’ with ‘doodler’ and I think it applies pretty well to Lark and his view of the world in season 2 especially.

Broken man: this one doesn’t go much further than Lark Oak is uh…a pretty broken man, if you will.

Liar: I added this one while I was still pretty early in season 2, around episode 5/6 when Lark and Sparrow were under the influence of the doodler question mark ? and now honestly I think it applies to Sparrow more. “I’m not in the right state of mind/I just wish I had the strength to admit it” is pretty straight forwardly about Lark not being in the right state of mind at the dance, when he and Sparrow are under the doodler’s influence. It can also have a double meaning and be about his teenage years, where he’s not in the right state of mind and blinded by rage and hurt and confusion and self hatred from stabbing his dad and blaming himself and wanting to fix his mistakes and all of that spiraling out of control. “My stubbornness will put up a fight/but i don't deserve to win it” is just more of Lark’s self hatred and thinking he deserves everything bad coming to him. “I’m left in the dark pondering my mistakes/in the light i swear i will/deny it all” Lark has so many insecurities and anger and hurt within him, but all of that will stay firmly locked in his head, he’s not going to tell ANYONE anything. He’s not letting anyone in, he’ll deny it all. “I am the host of this hostility” is more just of just Lark feeling bad. “My life’s become this grand game of deception/my mind’s ignored all my heart’s good intentions” is Lark as an adult kind of looking back on his choices, regretting what he had to do with swapping the realms, and (this isn't really canon but) kind of missing Nicky, missing what they used to have and stuff. “We all feel this tension/we all have our own illusions” is the entire Oak-Garcia family, all feeling the tension between Lark and Henry and not knowing how to deal with it. And then in the outro how it repeats the chorus but with the use of ‘our’ feels like it could be about the Oak-Garcia family as a whole.

An honest mistake: first off, this one bops, second, this one’s also pretty much on here for the title, Lark was like, a small teenager when he stabbed his dad, and he was manipulated into doing it by Willy, so like, while it is his fault he started the apocalypse and unleashed the doodler, it’s also kinda not? It’s complicated. Regardless, it’s on here for Lark’s regret and y’know, all of that. “My old friends/i swear i never meant for this” is Lark talking directly to the other s1 kids. That’s pretty much it for this one.

You’re gonna go far kid: this one really speaks too and sounds like a manifestation of Lark’s anger. He’s angry and frustrated and the pure aggression behind the words “now dance fucker dance” really represents that well i think. “I never had a chance/and no one even knew it was really only you” speaks to Lark thinking he only has himself/him not trusting others. Also ‘i never had a chance’ is really specifically about the rogue card and Henry. He never had a chance of a happy relationship with his father because of the rogue card’s prediction, but also he never really stood a chance of turning out ‘normal’ or whatever just sort of based on Henry and Mercedes’s parenting style and also Henry’s own daddy issues really affecting how he parented his own children.

Polarize: no one judge for having twenty one pilots on one of my character playlist’s when the lyrics “i wanted to be a better brother, better son” apply so perfectly. “Wanted to be a better adversary to the evil i have done” is also very Lark, it represents his thoughts about the doodler and how he wishes he could finally, actually defeat it. “My friends and I we've got a lot of problems” speaks to the s1 kids and how they’ve been left with their parents' mess. The chorus of “deny, deny, denial” also feels very Lark to me.

Cut corners on short walks: I know this one sounds very different compared to the other songs on this playlist but the lyrics are too perfect to leave it off. I mean, the very beginning lines “the sour substances that make up my hind brain/have slowly become stagnant and i have surely become insane/and the anger i feel in my veins/has stopped pouring out of the hole in my face” already connect so deeply with Lark when i think about them. The ‘sour substances’ that make up the hind brain is I'm assuming intended to be about mental illness or something similar, but in the case of Lark and the Oaks in general I interpret that as the doodler, sitting idle in the Oak’s brains and bodies, waiting for a chance to surface. “Broken by 14 with no chance for absolution” is Lark going through everything he did and being so traumatized and hurt by the time he’s 14. By the time he’s 14 he’s already stabbed his father and everyone knows and there’s no coming back from that, it is a bloodstain on his history. “We were searching for joy with apophatic conclusions/we started savoring apathy and all of our bruises” Lark was a very happy child. He and his brother did everything together, they had great loving parents, they had everything they wanted and needed. Then they get taken to the realms. And then Lark isn’t so happy anymore. “We used to be so pure, so fragile and raw” is Lark mourning the loss of his and his friends innocence and childhood in the realms. “Well out of the flames we reclaimed our decay/and the world became a stage, complete chaotic, how we played” could be about the s1 kids being left with the ruins and decay of the world their parents left behind. The world becoming a stage is like the doodler being unleashed, everything is loose and chaotic now. The rest of the song, the bit about experiencing sexual assault and then the end being about healing i don’t think really apply to Lark in particular because frankly i don’t think either of those things happen to him.

No children: “i hope that our few remaining friends/give up on trying to save us” I mean. That line is pretty straight forward. Lark doesn’t have much hope for the future, he just wants people to stop caring, stop trying with him. It won’t work. “I hope we come up with a fail safe plot/to piss off the dumb few that forgave us” is Lark talking about Henry. He thinks Henry still loving him and forgiving him is stupid, he doesn’t understand why Henry hates him as much as he hates himself. “And I hope when you think of me years down the line/you can’t find one good thing to say” Lark’s self hatred. “And I’d hope that if I found the strength to walk out/you’d stay the hell out of my way” Lark hopes that if he left Sparrow wouldn’t follow. He knows he’s wrong.

Sometimes: credit to tumblr user @s-ccaam-era-crepe for this one, he has a breakdown of it for all of the dads but I thought it fit Lark especially. (Also it just Sounds very Lark to me so)

Gun.: Everything about this one screams Lark to me. The sound, the lyrics, the fucking TITLE, it’s all perfect. My chemical romance is also just a very Lark band to me, conventional weapons especially (yes im projecting it’s fine). “Well as soon as i get my gun/i’ll point it out the window at the setting sun” can be about the black hole/doodler eye/sun. “As soon as i get my gun/i’ll tell you about it when you fall in love” is Lark talking to Sparrow, he’s always going to be focused on fighting the doodler, that’s always going to be his top priority. Sparrow meanwhile is going to try and build a normal life for himself, so lark will always be telling Sparrow about his fights and stuff while Sparrow is busy doing his own thing with his own life. “Well the uniform isn’t sewn/they make ‘em like we give ‘em out to anyone” can represent how D.A.D.D.I.E.S. isn’t an official organization, it’s just a bunch of dads and sons trying to fix what’s wrong. The uniform isn’t sewn because they don’t have uniforms, they're just guys trying their best. “Well if i’m old enough to die for your mistakes/then let’s go” this is very much teenage Lark to me. 17 y/o Lark feeling so sick and tired of his dad telling him to stay out of fights and keep himself safe, when Lark just wants to go out and get bloody and get in the heat of battle again. He’s already fought, already been through an insane amount of shit, he’s old enough to die for both his own and his father’s mistakes. And maybe a part of himself wants to. “Can I bleed enough to fill up what the engine takes/we don’t know” is along similar lines, Lark will do whatever it takes to make up for what he did, he will fight and bleed until he’s dead if it means the doodler will die. “But if you’re watching up above/they're teaching me to kill/who’s teaching me to love” is incredibly specific and maybe doesn’t fit with canon, but this is like, if Henry died and Lark is still angry with him, then that line is Lark speaking to Henry after he’s gone, like Lark is learning to kill and all this very violent stuff that he knows Henry doesn’t love, and he’s slowly like leaving behind his softer, open side of himself that Henry really did love and did his best to nourish. It’s also like, the phrasing of “who’s teaching me to love?” really hits because we the audience and Lark himself knows that Henry was the one who taught Lark to love, taught all this hippie dippie shit that he just left behind and completely abandons. “I’m never gonna have a son” is like, Lark won’t bring a new life into this broken world until he’s able to fix it. He’s never going to have a son, and it’s also like, he’s the only of the s1 kids who doesn’t have a kid so it speaks to that as well.

Six feet: I found this one on another Lark playlist and thought it went hard so I put it on mine. I think this one just speaks really clearly to Lark’s dedication to fight and fix the world. He’ll work himself to death to make things right. Also it just bops so.

I’m not angry anymore: I don't even have a good breakdown for this one it’s just THE Lark song to me. It’s everything. It’s pretty much just the title and the vibes of the song and everything, I can't even explain it that well.

Anti-hero: listen i'm sorry i put the new biggest taylor swift hit on my lark oak playlist but hear me out, it fits. Just read what @terrific-fish wrote when it dropped:

Brother: oooooooh my god this one hurts me. Imagine Lark leaving to go off and try to plan and take down the doodler, the mission or whatever is unsuccessful and goes bad, and he arrives at Sparrow’s doorstep out of nowhere, because he knows his brother will always take him in. Sparrow will sit with him and listen and bring him down from whatever self hate and doubt and everything in his head that he's going through. He’d patch up any physical injuries Lark has as well. “Remember when you and I would make things up?/so many nights, just take me down/to the place we can hear them play/i miss that sound/cuz no we don’t sing so loud” is Lark wishing to go back to his and Sparrow’s childhood, before the realms and before the rogue card and before all the hurt and anger. He wants to be carefree and happy again. He misses it.

Brother: well. Going to be honest I didn't really have a good reason for this song to be here aside from the title, but going over the lyrics I have a truly tragic reading and interpretation for it. “Oh brother of mine/it’s been a long long time/since i’ve seen my face in your eyes” is Lark and Sparrow getting older and while they will always look like each other because, y’know, twins, as they grow older they develop more of their own sense of style and expression and change their looks a bit. Sparrow grows his hair long and shaves his face. He looks just like his father. Lark doesn’t have the patience to shave and so his beard is messy and unruly, but in a cool hot way. He looks nothing like his father. “I left you alone in a house not a home” is Lark tearing the Oak-Garcia home apart with his hatred of Henry. Mercedes and Sparrow don’t know what to do, Henry is in shambles, and Lark is just so, so angry. Sparrow becomes the middleman, facilitating Lark’s hatred while never speaking against him, never telling him how much it hurts to have the people he loves unable to speak with each other. “Brother i watched the sky burn/and all i learned was smoke fills the lungs like a disease” i think this is Lark learning that like, hurt and violence don’t only have to be physical? Like, he learns that words can cut just as much as knives. The ‘smoke’ can hurt just as much as the fire, just in a different way. He watches as words and social norms slowly kill his brother, as Sparrow inhales so much smoke it kills him and beats him down. “Oh brother i confess/there is little of me left that could care about dowsing the wildfire” is Lark losing so much of himself in anger that only the smallest part of himself cares about his father anymore. He can’t bring himself to forgive him but he misses him so much and everything hurts.

Pairing: Lenny Bruce & Midge Maisel Rated T

Part 1 | Part 2

Esther slips into the building just as another resident is leaving.

Not only did Lenny Bruce's letter contain a return address, but it even had his apartment number. It's a nice building, one with an elevator, and she presses the button for the sixth floor.

But when she stands outside apartment 6C, she freezes, her hand poised in the air to knock.

She hasn't thought this through. All she knows is that she wants to see him. To find out what he's like. If he misses her mother, her brother, her.

Why he didn't end up being part of their family.

"You're a little younger than the usual brand of fan who likes to post up outside my apartment."

Esther jumps, turning at the sound of the voice behind her. "Hi, um...I'm sorry - "

"Hey, Esther," he greets, and her lips part in surprise.

"You know who I am?" She asks.

Lenny chuckles quietly as he pulls his keys out of his pocket. "You look just like your mother," he explains as he approaches, unlocking the door. "Come on in."

"Thanks," she says as he gets the door open.

He steps in to a nice apartment. It's not super fancy, but it's decently decorated and very clean. "Kit! We've got company!"

A girl not much older than Esther herself comes bopping into the foyer a moment later. "Hey, Dad," she says. Her long blonde hair is pin-straight, parted perfectly down the middle, and Esther realizes this is the girl who could have been her big sister.

"This is Esther. Esther, my daughter, Kitty," he introduces.

"Little young for you, don't you think, Dad?" The blonde teases.

"Why don't you leave the jokes to me?" Lenny bats back. "Esther's Midge's daughter," he explains.

Kitty's eyes light up. "Wait, does that mean you and Midge - "

"Leave it, Kit," he warns, pointing at his daughter. "Esther, you want a soda or something?"

"Uh, sure. Thanks."

"Dad, I've gotta study for my trig final. It was nice meeting you, Esther. Say hi to Midge for me." Kitty gives a little wave before bouncing back down the hallway.

Esther follows Lenny into the kitchen, where he pulls a Coke out of the fridge, cracking open the bottle and handing it to her. She takes a sip with a shaky hand as he pours himself a glass of water. "So," he says, "what brings you to the Village?"

She puts the bottle on the counter. "I...wanted to see you, I guess," she answers.

"You guess," he repeats with a smirk.

"I saw you on Johnny Carson the other night, and...I don't know. I guess I just wanted to..." Lenny cocks his head and waits patiently. "Ethan said we loved you, but I don't really remember."

He smiles fondly when she mentions her brother. "The last time I saw you, you were throwing a hell of a tantrum," he explains.

She flushes in embarrassment. "I was?"

"Oh, yeah. A set of lungs that rivaled Pavarotti. Every time I left, you'd scream and cry and cling to my leg."

"That's so embarrassing," she grumbles, covering her face with both hands.

"I didn't want to leave you," he explains. "I loved you and your brother a lot."

She uncovers her face and looks at him, his eyes sad. "Then why did you?"

Lenny takes a sip from his water. "My cabaret license was revoked when I got convicted for obscenity," he explains slowly. "I couldn't work in New York anymore, so I moved to California."

"And Mama...it just ended?"

"She has you. She couldn't just pick you and Ethan up and move across the country to be with me. Joel would've had a tantrum of his own."

Esther rolls her eyes at the mention of her dad. "Joel's got his own family now. He would've been fine," she grumbles.

Lenny raises his eyebrows. "Things that bad?" He asks.

"My dad's a jerk. He's married, but he still sniffs around Mama all the time, and the waitresses at the club just keep getting younger and prettier..."

He chuckles. "Yeah, your pop always was a schmuck," he confirms, running his hand over his hair.

"Lenny...do you - " She stops herself and then says, "I saw your letters."

"My letters?"

"Mama keeps them in her nightstand," Esther explains, and she sees him react before schooling his features again. "I think...she misses you."

Lenny shakes his head. "So that's what this is about," he realizes with a chuckle. "You're trying to get me and your mom back together."

"She's not happy," Esther tells him. "She pretends to be, but I know she's lonely. She doesn't date anyone - or if she does, it's never been serious enough for us to meet them. You're the only one of her boyfriends who's spent time with us, and - "

"Whoa, hey," Lenny interrupts, and Esther realizes she's started tearing up and talking too quickly. Her hands are shaking, and he grips her upper arms gently. "Glad to see your lungs still work," he teases.

Esther sniffs and wipes at her eyes. "I don't have a dad anymore - not really," she breathes. "And if you still love Mama..."

He hugs her around the shoulders, and she clutches the back of his jacket. "I'll always be here for you if you need me, peanut," he says.

She sniffs and looks up at him. "Peanut?" She asks.

He laughs quietly. "It's what I used to call you as a kid...sorry, old habits - "

"I like it," she interrupts, holding him a little tighter as he pets her hair.

My thoughts on the Eurovision songs this year

1. 🇦🇱 Albania - Duje - Albina & Familja Kelmendi

VERY dramatic, but I could shake my ass to the part in which she isn’t singing

2. 🇦🇲 Armenia - Future Lover - Brunette

„I just wanna make art, read books, be loved and called a good girl“ okay ma'am that’s everyone ur not special

3. 🇦🇺 Australia - Promise - Voyager

Do we know why they are headbanging this much? It couldn’t be bc of this song right?

4. 🇦🇹 Austria - Who the hell is Edgar? - Teya & Salena

Not often is a song made spicier by adding some church singing

I have just watched the video for the third time and I start to suspect that there is more than one guy singing, I could be wrong tho
