maybe a silly question, but what does the term “izzy canyon” mean? it conjures up a mental image of “the metaphorical place where izzy hands enjoyers hang out/got kicked into” but I dunno if it’s a hashtag or a group chat or a state of mind or why it’s a canyon specifically (I guess con sounds like can?) the mastodon con makes it seem pretty organized!
not a dumb question at all!
"metaphorical place where izzy hands enjoyers hang out/got kicked into" might actually be the most succinct and on the nose description i've heard of it lmao
it is really mostly just a way to refer to izzy hands fans who tend to interact in the same corner of fandom.
the idea started sometime last year when an izzy fan got doxxed after receiving hate mail for a few months. a burner account posted the person's city and possible locations for the chain they worked at, along with a list of other users they said they would target next (seemed to just loosely be people in the same circle as them? weirdly enough my handle was on there too despite not knowing each other)
nothing further developed from that situation and the person was okay, but understandably it kicked off a wave of izzy fans blocking anyone who had a habit of harassing izzy fans, along with running blockchains on the most vocal ones who'd start dogpiles. around the same time, someone made an "izzy haters" twitter and izzy haters group chat which just intensified "okay just block all of them because that is a huge red flag for incoming networked harassment"
tldr izzy fans grew a reputation for being very heavy blockers. it became an in joke within the community that izzy fans didn't ever know what was going on when the general fandom had new memes, or more likely, new discourse because of the huge block wall between the groups.
almost as if they were at the bottom of a canyon, doing their own thing, and not paying attention to whatever was going on outside. hence the izzy canyon. i think it's also at least 30% a joke about izzy's genitals as well.
so yeah, just generally people who like the same character and hang out in the same social circles. i think because it's the part of fandom most vocally anti harassment, it also has a funny habit of absorbing in fans who don't necessarily like izzy, but had been targeted as part of a harassment campaign or in general just tired from fandom in general.
it pretty much functions like its own mini fandom within fandom? and as a group is very enthusiastic and also freakishly well organized so they end up more likely to do things like make regular fanweeks, set up a blog for doing fandom research and polls, organize a boat tour for a convention, or laying out detail instructions for test running mastodon for week to see how viable it is as a platform.

Y’all treat gnf the same way people treat women when they’re in a predominately male friend group
Like y’all know he is his own person and doesn’t exist solely to be shipped with his friends right

That viral post that's going around about how people who write "book quality" mlm fic are too "normal" to publish and have real jobs so only "weird" people publish their "shitty" fanfic is so completely out of touch with reality and I am giving a massive side eye to everyone reblogging it.
Not only is it completely, easily verifiably untrue (you cannot enter any professional writing space without tripping over a dozen grizzled scifi writers who got their start by filing off the serial numbers and publishing their Star Trek fanfic even going back decades ago??? it's a whole thing?? plus how can you look at the mlm category on Amazon right now and say with a straight face that people aren't publishing shitty Spirk and Stucky fanfic??? Oh, honey...) it's also the perfect example of this kind of sneering elitism that true artists would never sully themselves by seeking profit, they do it only for the purity of the thing that always somehow leads back to, "no one should be paid to make art, actually."
The only reason you're seeing more published fanfic right now has nothing to do with the idealistic purity of your hypothetical government employee written smut of the past vs the debased scribbles of those awful straights of today and everything to do with the fact that a) self-publishing has created a voracious readership that wants a ton of content so it's become a viable, flexible income stream for many, especially disabled people b) anyone can publish now with self-publishing tools so there are less gatekeepers and c) lockdown got a lot of people into fandom and therefore writing who never tried it before.
And if you really think there's no "shitty" published mlm and no "book-quality" m/f writing out there that started as fanfic, then you are clearly not a reader so why are you even talking about this?

"DELULU SITUATIONSHIP MONDAY AFTERNOON" THESE ARE GETTING WEIRDLY SPECIFIC, NO PUN INTENDED. AND DEEPLY CONCERNING.
MY ONLY DELULU SITUATIONSHIP IS WITH CROWLEY. THE SITUATION IS THAT SHE IS FICTIONAL. THE DELULU IS THAT I BELIEVE MY LOVE CAN OVERCOME THAT.
"YOU LISTENED TO YEARNING AND FEARFUL ON MONDAY AFTERNOONS" WHAT DOES THAT MEAN SPOTIFY WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

hey folks who interact with creative works online! just a tiny PSA
If you don't like a character, that's totally fine! If you have a different reading of a situation in a show & have issues with stuff that's going on, that's also fine.
What is NOT fine is to ACTIVELY SEEK OUT fans of the characters you don't like and talk shit about them, the characters they have feelings about, or the content they've posted b/c you, Freddy McHatesalot really needs to tell everyone how much you dislike a...fictional character.
You are totally welcome to consume content in your own space in whatever way you see fit. It is disrespectful of the fandom space to try to drag other people into your space and interact with you if they don't want to. And dunking on a character in writings or art of them is fucking rude as hell to the person who put work into into the creation they made out of some feelings they were having.
Also. side note, it is possible to enjoy a character who is Wrong About Some Things or Isn't Doing The Right Stuff In The Right Situation. Sometimes it's possible to like a character and disagree with them, and shitting on people b/c you can't see what they see in a character is pretty trash garbage and is 90% of why I just make silly little art for me and my own silly feels and hope folks get a chuckle or some enjoyment out of it too.

Welp... the discord group may not happen actually. Something absolutely batshit crazy went on in one of my discord communities during Jan/Feb, and it affected me and everyone in the group on an extremely personal level, so I have a bit of an aversion to being on discord because of it rn. So... maybe one day, but not now.

the horrifying implications of Cinderpelt as a pawn of Starclan- trying everything she can to unsuccessfully stop her apprentice from leaving because she's terrified of the internalised idea of "failing" her clan and her job due to her impending death, while unaware that the entire Crowpool situation is intentional by Starclan for their own benefit to initiate the Power of Three prophecy and that her death in itself is to be Leafpool's motivation to stay- the idea that the stars, the ancestors and family and friends she devoted her life to always meant for her to die young and hopeless and were willing to manipulate her emotionally for the best outcome for them- is alone a piece of her character that's infinitely more heartwrenching and tragic and interesting than "she actually had a crush on Firestar and she's sad she can't date him :((" and I'm so mad that the latter is her primary legacy instead of any interpretations of her as a character that go beyond boring forbidden romance #17 that was barely even implied to begin with

[ID: A redraw of the "let's talk about the mail" scene from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Sonder, a person with pale skin, short brown curly hair, blue eyes, and glasses, is glaring angrily at another person, mostly offscreen, and holding up one hand while another one rests on a conspiracy board behind her. The conspiracy board involves a picture of the Coin from Blaseball labeled "this bitch", a picture of a bunch of the suns from Blaseball, a logo of the sun with a blue arrow through it labeled "bad? KILL", the Welcome to Desert Bluffs logo, a picture of the Dawn Machine from Fallen London, a large piece of paper just reading "the sun the sun the sun" over and over, a piece of paper with a dollar sign on it and a smaller piece of paper below it reading "capitalism (BAD)", and many other pieces of paper with writing on them, including one with "destroya destroya against the sun we're the enemy," "the sun goes out when god explodes (harrow the ninth)," "god??", and a few pieces that are partially covered but appear to read "killed," "bastard," "i'm so cold," and simply "the sun". All of these are connected by red strings. Captions at the bottom read "Let's talk about the sun. Can we talk about the sun? I've been dying to talk about the sun." End ID.]
my mood recently and also constantly forever
