DW REWATCH

S1E1 ROSE

When Rose Tyler meets a mysterious stranger called the Doctor, her life will never be the same again. Soon she realises that her mum, her boyfriend and the whole of Earth are in danger. The only hope for salvation lies inside a strange blue box.

1. LOVE this opening. Such a great bedroom hahah. Perfectly messy and pink—makes me wonder what t2r’s shared bedroom must look like now!

2. What does Jackie do for a living? I know it’s canon (or fanon?) that she’s a hairdresser but do we actually ever see her working as one?

3. Who’s Derek? And why does Rose think a mannequin prank would be up his lane? RUN. Such a great meet cute 😭😭😭😭 these two are married now you guys!!!!!!!

4. ‘Cos to get that many people dressed up and being silly, they got to be students.  That makes sense. Well done. 🥺🥺 nothing just the Doctor always appreciating the insight Rose brings🥺🥺

5. WILSON’S DEAD

6. ‘So, I'm going to go up there and blow them up, and I might well die in the process, but don't worry about me. No, you go home. Go on. Go and have your lovely beans on toast.’ ohhhhh he wants her to join him so bad 😭 the poor guy. This is right after he’s destroyed his entire planet and there’s just SOMETHING about Rose he sees, huh? 😭🥺 also ’Nice to meet you, Rose. Run for your life.’ Such a great line!

7. TARDIS appearance!

8. ‘Honestly, it's aged her. Skin like an old bible. Walking in now you'd think I was her daughter.’ oh my God Jackie Tyler I have missed you. Imagine your mum reacting to you almost getting blown up like THIS though 🤣 yikes!

9. Rose doesn’t tell Mickey about the Doctor—no matter how ridiculous the plastic plot sounds she believes him, even if it is unconsciously at the moment

10. All the calls Jackie is getting one after the other insinuate a pretty closely knit neighbourhood, doesn’t it? All these people know where Rose works and are concerned enough to call up. Imagine how traumatic the sudden shift to Pete’s World must’ve been for Jackie—I know she’s got the parallel version of Bev but it’s not the same, and it must’ve taken a WHILE to adjust to everything.

11. “The airs and graces” comment. So much to be dissected here! Jackie’s relationship with herself and with her daughter implied very heavily in this one line. She seems to be jealous, even.

12. They have a cat flap! Rose confirmed cat person moment (1). The Doctor waiting outside the flat xD. Talk about picking up strays🥺

13. The dialogue is so damn gooood. And Christopher’s delivery is so endearing

14. Jackie hitting on the Doctor!!!!! Need tentoo to bring this up ASAP. She’s his mother in law😭

15. Staircase shot is incredible. Love the Sort of, yeah❤️ bit. Also love how the Doctor repeatedly checks on how she’s handling the information (*Are you alright? Do you believe me?*)—however unconsciously he’s doing it, he IS checking her suitability as a potential companion 🥺

16. Mickey SMH. Also apparently he doesn’t wash his dishes 🤣

17. Loveee Clive. RTD’s writing is so immersive, it really makes the whole world come alive. These side characters add so much depth to the story—something sorely missing in the Moffat and Chibnall eras.

18. THE WHEELIE BIN. I always forget how fucking ridiculous this episode is until I rewatch it 🤣 also lord Rose is so uninvested in this relationship. P-P-PIZZA will always be one of my fav lines

19. The infamous Jimmy Stone! I love how we’re given the one line about him and it’s inspired thousands of fics. Rose considering completing her A Levels here—would that be something she’d be interested in doing in Pete’s World?

20. TARDIS!!!!! Doomsday theme begins here 😓😓 love how the Doctor is judging how easily she can accept his alienness—he claims to be done with human companions every time but he is undoubtedly impressed by Rose. Also find it incredibly interesting he didn’t even think about Mickey being dead. This, contrasted with other alien lives (including the Daleks, sometimes) that the Doctor seems to value…is an intriguing juxtaposition. Is there a little simmering jealousy of the boyfriend already? Is he slightly unable to look at consequences of actions beyond his own? He has just come off of a genocide at this moment

21. Mickey’s mother! Bit of a mistake here, we learn that he was raised by his grandma in *Father’s Day*

22. Lots of planets have a North!!!

23. I always found it funny that Rose, who seemed so upset about Mickey a second ago, is now holding hands with Nine and running down the bridge lmfao. They really are very alike in their love for the thrill.

24. ‘Yeah, that was always a possibility. Keep him alive to maintain the copy.’ You knew that and you never said?  Can we keep the domestics outside, thank you?’ hmmm. Jealousy, perhaps? Or a disregard for lives he doesn’t believe are at the same level as that of higher beings? As much as he rejected the Time Lords, he is a product of his origin, and has quite a condescending view of humans

25. Shunt off. God, I love you RTD

26. The Nestene Consciousness is alarmed when it recognises that he is a Time Lord. Later in the show, it’s implied that the Time Lords were almost, if not as bad as the Daleks were, during the Time War.

27. RIP Clive 🕊️ fingers crossed it’s your cameo we’re getting in the 60th

28. Rose! My beloved! Bronze medalist! This screencap in particular is very Bad Wolf

29. I honestly can’t wrap my mind around people who say Rose was wrong for going with the Doctor. He came back for her!!!

30. The perfect opening episode. Extrapolation is done so elegantly and we even get a sense of how absurd the show can get. 10/10, and one of my favourite episode 1s!

Want some Headcanons?

-Totally Tylers arc of Melanie introducing him to some more fun and clamer things to rest between the work

-He has no idea that some of his fashion choices make her sometimes look at him curious

-He at first was taken aback that if he would stay with her taht he would become king but adapted to the life rather quickly and stayed pretty professional in it

-often has the habit of wanting to brush her hair but is not really obvious about it, he just really likes how it looks

-Loves leaning his head on hers on occasion, it calms him somehow.

-Why do I imagine he could as hobby in her world instead of a fashion designer also become a plushy maker

-basically a battle couple that is soft for each other

-he inspired her to a lot of lyrics during the time she still was singing

-I feel out of interest if she can do it, she often tried to of pin him down but instead he pulled her into a hug

-She loves when he is soft and passionate with her, makes her swoon in a way

-despite her fending for herself most of the time when he is there he makes sure she is safe from any stalkers or problems

-Basically adapted red and black kimonos into her style thanks to him

-things could have gone wrong with their return to the real world if James didn’t find her fast enough, in her new school he couldn’t have reached her as well as the nicoronpa killing game happening where she gets dragged in sooo... it could have ended very bad if we consider that possiblity

-thanks to his sparring she gained enough arm strength to sometimes even surprise him, she already had fine arm strength thanks to carrying books but it got much better

-i think in the beginning of their relationship he might have thought given reading so many fairytales that she might rather like this charming point of view of him more but she actually finds it more endearing when he can be dense or even goofy on occasion..

-I feel in their future it became a habit that she stops him before leaving the house, checks if he looks well and then pulls him into a kiss

-Given I often talk how Carol likely gets phone charms reminding of her partner I feel with james she has a small sword themed one

-While Metaron is much better with the sword Rubina excells with her crossbow, making them pretty versitile as fighting duo

-they totally would have wedding under the stars and she would definetly run away with him if her parents were more forceful about her situation

-both share a love for strawberry but I do hope Metaron can hold Rubina back when she is in her sweets addiction

-Also I can see them spar given Rubina becomes a police officer and so he helped her get strong enough for it

-I feel Rubina was also a core figure helping with the Ronnie problem

-To Rubina Kira became like a small sibling in a way

Changes: or to take the higher ground before it's too late

I'm going to be real here folks, I cry ugly tears to this song. Bad.

Changes is a song on Cam's album "The Otherside". It's country, it's folk and it's an album a bit influenced by changes in Cam's life (a change of label, personal life). She collaborated with Harry on the song Changes, as she opened for him on a venue and was already working with Tyler Johnson.

From what I gathered: Harry sent her the demo of the song, implying he made most of the writing on this one. What I'm basing this claim on is her interview for Rolling Stones (read it here):

I heard [the demo] and was just like, “Oh, this ache to outgrow something that you don’t want to outgrow!” It felt so good. I normally don’t take outside songs [...]

‼️DISCLAIMER‼️when analysing this song, I'm gonna go from the idea of it being written with a queer mindset (how surprising of me). Cam rendered the song beautifully and it is very much her own, but I believe Harry's input is consequential. After all that's his lil whistle and cute fishsona in the MV.

Sad queer analysis ahead.

Let's analyse the lyrics first:

There is a town

Somewhere down a country road

The speaker describes the town to us, from memory, from experience. "There it is, down the road, can you picture it ?"

I see it now

I take it everywhere I go

The speaker doesn't currently live in the town, they're on the move (nice throwback to the coutry road). But despite all the travelling, they realize the sedentary smalltown never leaves them. It's part of them. It left a mark on them.

The river sways, I can almost hear it now

As if to say, "You're not the only one who wants a way out"

The town is so real to the speaker they can sense it, eyes and ears. But it gets a bit dark: the river sways like it's trying to leave its bed. The river is envious of the speaker who managed to leave. The town is so toxic even nature wants to get away from it. Or the speaker resents the town so bad that they project their own resentment on the river.

So, I go

'Cause I don't wanna feel like I don't know you anymore

I memorize those roads

This is the call for the speaker to leave for good. Their motive doesn't seem to be ambitious or anything grand. They leave because they apprehend a feeling. Apprehending a feeling, something that may not even happen, is the way of an anxious person. Anxiety is the motive of their departure. However, they still memorize the roads leading to the town, just in case. Perhaps one day they'll come back.

Somewhere out in the big wild country

Someone's fallin' in love in a backseat

Givin' it away

Like their hearts won't ever break

Suddenly it's about love ! Young love, one that is lived in the small compartment of a car, somewhere hidden and safe in the big wild country. As if the countryside was unexplored and threatening.

God bless the young hearts sippin' cheap wine

Gettin' drunk with their friends for the first time

Thinkin' nothing's gonna change

'Til everything changes

The speaker looks at the youth with tenderness, wishing them the best. But once again, they're not in the town in the present time, they don't see the youngsters fooling around, they can only guess from first-hand experience. And it's very specific: falling in love, getting drunk with friends and thinking everything's gonna be easy like that forever until it's not and heartbreak ensues.

From there I hop in with the raw queer theme of those lyrics. It started by falling in love and it ended up in a heartbreak. In between, the speaker got drunk for the first time with their friends, people they trusted enough to let go a little, but in the end everything changed. Why ? Alcohol makes you forget about code of conduct, how you're supposed to behave. It makes you say or do things you might not have done sober.

We can interprete this chorus as the beginning of the end for the speaker. It's the only part of the song evocating the past, and it's fun and easy, but it's also where things started to get bad the way they are in the present. Something might have happened that first time the speaker got drunk and it marked the end of innocence and careless childhood, and it probably has to do with love as no other factor is provided apart from falling in love and heartbreak.

They never leave

They're all havin' babies now

Livin' off the gossip of a cruel small town

They. With Harry, it's always You, Me, and They. They are having babies, all of them, like it's not a very difficult thing to do, it's just natural. They have the leisure of the day, not a thing to worry about, if not gossip. It's not implied anymore, the small town is downright cruel. Gossip fuels it, but on behalf of someone else, and that someone is most definitely the speaker who left and who describes its inhabitants in the most mundane way, perhaps with a hint of contempt. The speaker seems bitter.

So, I go

'Cause I don't wanna feel like you don't know me anymore

Don't recognize my face

Reprise of the pre-chorus except now, the speaker provides another reason for their departure. Not only they feared they wouldn't know the town anymore, they also feared being seen as a stranger. It's not like the speaker actually changed physically: but it might as well feel like it. Again, apprehension, anguish. As implied in the chorus, things changed to the point where the speaker feels they would seem like a whole another person to the rest of the town, a stranger, a threat to the integrity of the conservatives. So they leave before this shift in perception can happen.

There ain't nothing here for me anymore

They say they don't hear from me anymore

And I don't wanna hear it anymore

The town is not outwardly hostile. It's still the town that saw the speaker as a kid. The town doesn't understand why the speaker left, but the speaker won't give in and get in touch. They want to be as far away as possible, until they don't hear the questions, the river, everything. It's almost like the speaker doesn't carry the town in their heart at all. They want to forget it all, and it hurts everytime the town tries to lure them back in. The way Cam sings it is painful to me man

Yeah, just the confirmation of the chorus being the speaker's experience. I went ahead and assumed it was already lol but it's like a plot twist effect. It's dramatic. It's a personal song to someone.

TO MAKE IT SHORT to me this song is intense and very in touch with the queer experience. Though it describes a specific situation, it is surprisingly not that detailed or full of metaphors the way Harry often writes: this town could be literally any smalltown in the countryside. The backseat could be the one of any car, cheap wine is something any teen can afford. I like to think Harry wrote it for himself but is also aware so many people went through the same thing, and still will. I have to admit I'm heavily biased writing this, as the experience of a queer kid struggling to find their place in a well settled smalltown is familiar.

GETTING DRUNK AND QUEER IDENTITY is an analogy Harry already used in Fine Line when he sang "We'll get the drinks in so I'll get to thinking of her". To drink is to let go, to unveil the most subconscious aspects of yourself you might not want to deal with otherwise. You don't care about judgement and you get to explore those parts freely. In Changes, this is the last memory they recall before stating the changes and their departure. Perhaps getting drunk for the first time would be when they realized they're queer. Or acted upon it, causing their little world to shake. They chose to leave before it eventually wouldn't feel like a choice anymore. There is no life for people like them in a cruel smalltown.

SMALLTOWN BOY

This song reminds me an awful lot of Smalltown Boy by Bronski Beat. The song is about a queer boy having to leave the smalltown where he grew up because of persecutions and no future prospects.

Mother will never understand why you had to leave, Smalltown Boy

They say they don't hear from me anymore, Changes

But the answers you seek will never be found at home, the love that you need will never be found at home

There is nothing here for me anymore

Other people not understanding why they leave. People who can't truly empathize even when they mean no harm. They would never understand the speaker's departure, because those people get to find love and have babies and live a peaceful life in the countryside.

You were the one that they'd talk about around town as they put you down

Livin' off the gossip of a cruel small town

Yeah yeah. I really struggle with just seeing this song as nostalgia when such harsh words are being used. I do believe there is a part of fondness for that town, that countryside setting and the early days. But it's not all tender memories.

CHANGES AND ERODA

Of couuuurse we all noticed the adorable purple fish with the pearl necklace. It represents Harry, no question, as it whistles Harry's part. And of couuuuurse we all made the link with the erodian fish, and some even noticed they formed the bluegreener pair when their colors are inverted.

It makes sense for those fishes to be connected with this interpretation of Changes. Both works are about a small town, lost in the nature, where the people are watching, aware of everything that isn't normal, that is peculiar. The early life of the peculiar boy is similar in every way to the early life of the speaker in Changes. The fish in Adore You grows too big for the island and has to leave, and though Eroda makes amends with the peculiar boy, he leaves as well because his future, his fulfilment, is somewhere else. So does the speaker in Changes.

IN CONCLUSION

The more I write posts like this, the more endeared I am by Harry's world. How Harry writes for himself, but also for other people with songs like this. How nature finds its way in all that he does. How grounded he is, how he doesn't seem to forget where he came from. It really is such a rare thing to see in a mainstream popstar's writing and art. How can someone say he sold his soul to LA is beyond me

A few Headcanons for Symbiote OC Terror

Since someone actually asked me to post a few Headcanons for my Symbiote OC. These are pretty basic but still, hope y'all find these amusing :)

-The relationship between Terror and his host, Abigail Kasady is that of siblings. As Terror has been with her since she was 5 years old, awakeninging from her blood after she was bitten by a brown recluse spider.

-While not making himself known to others for many years, he and Abigail are extremely close. And he often would subtly assist his 'sister' by increasing her natural physical abilities and healing.

-When he physically manifests either partially or fully one of the most striking things about Terror is his prominent black and white coloring.

-While technically a Red Symbiote, Terror has leucism, which has turned his red pigments white but left his black pigments intact.

-Fully overtaking Abby, Terror is intimidating in height, like his father Carnage but is very lean and only seems to have two tendrils that protrude from in between their shoulder blades. Each is equipped with a lethal blade at the ends.

-Terror can also produce a pair of long retractable blades from his forearms, almost like a pair of built-in katanas and due to Abby being a mutant with fire-based powers, Terror has a much higher tolerance to fire than other symbiotes. Being completely immune when bonded with Abigail and should he ever bond to another, his ability to withstand fire remains extremely high.

-Personality wise Terror was mischievous when he was young, but as he aged he became very grounded and he tends to be methodical in his approach to life.

-However... To sum up his personality overall, it would be best described as a 'Giant Nerd'

-He loves Fantasy and in several online D and D games he and Abby play an unconventional character type that fits them both, a Werewolf Cleric.

-Like with the rest of Abby's family, Terror didn't reveal himself right away to Abby's best and eventual boyfriend Tyler, but Abby had mentioned Terry to him so often that Tyler had believed that Terry was possibly a second personality of Abbys... or maybe something like what her father had... Either way, Tyler was accepting to whatever the truth truly was. Something that deeply endeared him to this Symbiote.

-When Tyler asked Abigail to his schools prom, he asked BOTH Abby and Terror. Who was revealed at that point and even presented two corsages to them on the day of the dance.

-Terror and Abby are pretty much a two-for-one deal. As they view their unique situation as that of conjoined twins.

-Terror also has studied religion and mythology amongst all clutures and is extremely knowledgeable on those subjects.

-On that point, Terror does have a major quirk in how he does NOT want anything to do with seances, curses, or anything that could have a tie to really dark occult stuff.

-For this, when Abby and Tyler went to several museums across the country on a road trip together, Terror refused to let Abby go into the mummy exhibits... Terror locking up her body and repeating 'Nope...' over and over again.

-This appearent fear of demonic things and potential curses has led to a few arguments between brother and sister but nothing severe.

-Although when Tyler went off to college, there was a day he called Abby and specifically asked to speak with Terror.

-"So the other day my roommates wanted to do a seance... and while I didn't want any part of it and just went to the library instead, I just came back... And... Well... I think my whole dorm is possessed." Tyler explained. "Terror, do you think you can do the exorcism? Because the local priest just laughed at my phone call..."

-'This is why you don't mess with that shit!" Terror fumed. As he overshadowed his sister and rubbed their temples. 'Fine, I will head out there. But I need to pick up some Holy Water, a Bible and a crucifix first. That list may change as I figure out what we are dealing with here. Can't use a Bible against a Djinn...'

-There was seldom a sight that can beat watching a Symbiote, it's host/sister and their boyfriend exorcize and entire dorm of possessed Archeology and Paleontology students.

-To which Terror later stated after it was over that if they ever did this crap again he'd eat them all...

-Due to Terrors black and white coloration he and Abby when merged in the public eye have been likened to a magpie.

-They are called the Monster Magpie

-Carnage nearly died laughing at the name.

-Tyler however pointed out that those little birds can be dangerous as heck.

-He kinda started calling them both his 'Murder Birds' as a loving nickname.

-Tyler is the ONLY person who can refer to them as that and not get maimed.

-ALSO Terror also owns a small pair of spectacles that he likes to wear because they make him look studious... He used to keep them inside Abby, next to one of her kidneys...

-Cletus found out about that and got him an eyeglass case... Because unless you are doing it to someone you hate, glass shouldn't be in kidneys...

Stay Golden Sunday: Betty White, In Memoriam

Betty White, the last member of the Golden Girls, died on December 31, 2021. Let’s look back with fondness on her time with the show, and what she brought to the character of Rose Nylund.

Back in St. Olaf...

Well, this is it, isn’t it? Our very own Stay Golden Sunday Very Special Episode. The great Betty White, last surviving member of the main cast of The Golden Girls, died on December 31. She was just a few weeks shy of her 100th birthday. It’s really, truly the end of an era and she will be missed so much by all of us.

The logical side of my brain has always known Betty White’s death would almost certainly happen before I reached the end of this column. I’m barely halfway through the second of seven seasons. But the emotional side of me was absolutely, irrationally hoping she would live forever. So I never prepared anything, and I’m writing this SGS mostly off the cuff.

It seems I wasn’t the only one, either. Her agent, Jeff Witjas, told People, “Even though Betty was about to be 100, I thought she would live forever.” One of my favorite memes is just a picture of her that says, “We need to start thinking about what kind of world we’re going to leave behind for Betty White.”

White was, by every single account I’ve been able to find, an exceptional human being -- an animal rights activist, an anti-racist crusader, a staunch LGBTQ+ ally (the latter two in times when being so was even more difficult and dangerous than it is now). She remained funny, sassy, and endearing right to the end, teasing Ryan Reynolds in one of her final interviews.

So instead of an episode recap this week, let’s take a look at the extraordinary life of Betty White, her role as Rose Nylund in The Golden Girls, and her most extraordinary moments on the show.

“The older you get, the better you get . . . unless you’re a banana.”

I wish I could go over all the specifics of Betty White’s extraordinary life and career, but I’ll stick to the basics. She was born on January 17, 1922 in Illinois, and lived in California during the Great Depression. In case you ever wonder how far back her animal activism goes, apparently she originally wanted to be a forest ranger. Sadly, it was not a career open to women at the time. She later served as a volunteer during World War II.

After discovering her interest in performing, she began her career on the radio and even appeared on an experimental transmission -- meaning she was on TV before it was even officially a “thing.” She eventually transitioned fully to TV with the show Life with Elizabeth. She apparently became the first woman to produce a sitcom with that show, as well as the first to have control both in front of and behind the camera, or at least according to Wikipedia. She beat even Lucille Ball in that regard, which is absolutely something worth remembering. The two were also good friends.

She later became regular panelist on popular game shows, and would become even more well-known on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. She played Sue Ann Nivens, a cynical, man-eating parody of the sickly sweet homemaker women who appeared in other sitcoms. I think she’s probably best summarized by this clip.

I swear this woman could make a marble statue laugh. She also, over the course of this time, had several iterations of her own show called, appropriately, The Betty White Show.

White met her third husband, Allen Ludden, at a filming of the game show Password in 1961. She frequently described Ludden as the love of her life, and remained with him until his death in 1981. She never remarried after that, as she said she’d already had her perfect love story. Reportedly, she kept a photo of Ludden on her bedside table and would blow him a kiss every morning.

Because this is a Golden Girls column, I’m going to focus on her role in the show and how she got it, but I seriously cannot overstate just how incredible this woman’s life and career is. Let’s be clear, we’re not just mourning the woman who played Rose Nylund. We’re mourning one of the most interesting pioneers in the history of television and entertainment. I also want to salute her for choosing to focus on said career over having children, even divorcing her second husband, Lane Allen, because he wanted kids and she didn’t. For the time period that was, if you’ll pardon the expression, pretty ballsy of her.

Anyway, White was approached originally to audition for the role of Blanche, as that character seemed the closest to her previous role as Sue Ann. Rue McClanahan, who was at the time best known for playing the ditzy Vivian on Maude, was shortlisted for the role of Rose. Neither woman was terribly enthused about their selected role, but they loved the script and wanted to be part of it. It was Jay Sandrich, the director of the pilot episode, who made possibly one of the greatest decisions in television history: He asked Rue and Betty to read for each other’s parts.

McClanahan loved the role of Blanche and had wanted to play her all along, but White had to be convinced that Rose was the role for her. Sandrich basically described Rose as the ultimate innocent, who takes everything literally and doesn’t have a devious bone in her body. According to White (via Golden Girls Forever), “And when he said that, it made sense for me... And Rue took Blanche and went with her where I never would have had the guts to go. So it just worked out beautifully.”

Not only was this a great decision for the two characters and actresses, apparently it was instrumental in getting Bea Arthur, the last to be added to the main cast, on board with the show. When Rue, who’d been asked by Susan Harris to help persuade her, called her, Bea said she had no interest in doing, “Maude and Vivian meet Sue Ann Nivens.” Rue responded, “That’s not the way we’re going to play it, Bea. I’m going to play the Sue Ann Nivens vamp, and Betty’s going to play the Vivian role.” That made Arthur take notice.

The pilot episode was filmed on April 17, 1985 in front of a live audience at Sunset Gower Studios in Hollywood. Betty White, along with all her costars, captured the attention of the whole world that day. The pilot was filmed twice in front of two separate groups of people, but both times they got huge laughs and everyone immediately knew this was a hit.

“That moose not only raised Little Yiminiy -- he put him through medical school!”

Betty White as Rose Nylund is, hands down, one of the funniest performances ever aired on television. I mean, let’s completely bare our biases here: Every single character on The Golden Girls is easily in the top 10 of all TV characters (my personal top 4, honestly). They’re a perfect combination of well-cast actresses and excellent writers. But focusing on Rose specifically, there’s something truly special about her.

Rose is, for one, a character who’s unfailingly kind and lovely. She’s charitably minded, and has a nice word to say about almost everyone. She’s a comforting and warm presence, even when she’s only the tertiary character in the episode. She’s almost always the one interacting with animals on set (which I have to believe was something Betty insisted on), whether it be dogs, pigs or chickens.

It’s because of that caring nature that the few times Rose seriously loses her temper, or where she discards her scruples for whatever reason, are among the most memorable in the show’s history. The first time Rose showed there was more to her is in Season 1′s “The Triangle,” where she managed to trap a philanderer into a public confession with only seconds of planning. Most people remember Rose’s response to a question about her leaking roof:

DOROTHY: *seeing Rose come out of her room with buckets* Hi Rose. The ceiling in your room leaking too? ROSE: No, Dorothy. I just finished milking the cow I keep in my closet. Gee, with only three hours’ sleep, I can be as bitchy as you.

Make no mistake, when Rose was done fucking around, Betty had an amazing way of riding the line between keeping true to the character while also giving her a glorious moment to shine. My favorite moment out of all of them is in Season 3, Episode 1, “Old Friends.”

I haven’t yet written my SGS about this episode, so I’ll keep a recap to a minimum, but suffice to say Rose’s teddy bear is mistakenly given to a girl, who uses the opportunity to try and milk the Girls for some blackmail money. At the end of the episode, Rose at first starts to say that perhaps it’s time she let her teddy go, and then shows the child in the best way just how little weight she has to throw around.

Even Rose’s flaws were hilarious: For starters, she had a mean competitive streak that frequently put her at odds with the other Girls. It started in Season 1 with “The Competition,” when she showed her first sign of a darker side during a bowling tournament. Later she would somehow finagle her way into a coaching role around children -- perhaps not a good idea given her nature.

Another major flaw was her sometimes toxic positivity. Not everyone was comfortable being around someone so cheery, and at her worst Rose would not accept that she wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea. In Season 5, Episode 9, “Comedy of Errors,” she harasses a coworker who makes it clear he’d prefer that she leave him alone -- where we learn that Rose apparently puts on puppet shows at work. Because of course she does.

“You know the rules. I get the rose.”

But it’s not just the silly stuff for which we remember Rose. To be sure, Betty White was fantastic at that kind of comedy -- the wide-eyed innocence and the occasional flashes of deviousness and rage. But her best moments on the show were when things slowed down, and she got to show that she could absolutely make you cry.

I have a whole plethora of scenes I could use for this example, but I’ll use three just to keep this brief. First, the scene in Season 2′s “Piece of Cake,” when she recounts her final birthday in St. Olaf. Rose explains to her late husband Charlie that she’s decided to move away from Minnesota so she can move on with her life. Betty White said in interviews that she put a lot of her love for Allen Ludden into Rose’s love for Charlie. That moment at the end of the scene when she tells Charlie she loves him and misses him as her voice breaks . . . well, I refuse to believe anyone out there couldn’t be touched by the real love and devotion Betty is showing us at that moment.

The second scene is Rose’s despair during the events of “Rose Fights Back.” I’m not exactly sure why (though I have theories) Rose was often saddled with episodes about societal problems, but she got no less than two episodes about ageism in the job market. When she hits her lowest moment, she describes seeing herself in the person of a local homeless woman. It’s one of those moments when Rose, for all her bubbly good nature, revealed she’s a lot more aware of the ills of the world than she generally communicates. She finishes with the line, “God, what am I going to do?” and, as someone who’s been without a job or prospects in my life, my heart breaks for her.

The third scene is in “Ebbtide’s Revenge,” after the death of Phil. Rose doesn’t play much of a part in the episode until the very end. That’s when she reminds everyone that she was a grief counselor, and within minutes manages to resolve the situation between Sophia and her daughter-in-law Angela. Granted, she does so with a rather tortured St. Olaf story, but she delivers some of the most compassionate, sensible, and intelligent lines on the show to Sophia, and it’s enough to finally break the emotional stalemate. Betty was excellent at portraying Rose’s smarter moments but, even more than that, she was excellent at showing how Rose was, at heart, just the best kind of a person.

You weren’t quite sure what time it was when you heard Jace whimper. It wasn’t really even a full-on cry to wake you, but then you’d never really gone to sleep. Instead, you’d laid there staring at your wife and child trying to come up with ways to protect them. Tonight had literally been the worst night of your life. You thought it was the time that you’d gotten the call about (Y/N) being in a car accident, but tonight was worse. Seeing those cop cars pull up to the drive, your heart had literally stopped beating for fear that (Y/N) had been in another accident; only to learn that it was actually worse. Someone was trying to tear apart your family.

Slithering out of bed as stealthily as you could, so you wouldn’t wake (Y/N), you grabbed Jace out of the bassinet. He barely made a peep as you went and grabbed his bottle for his late-night feeding. You sat over by the window in your bedroom, just staring at Jace. There was no way you’d let anything happen to him or your wife. You’d do whatever it took to protect them.

By the time the sun came up, you had a plan. You felt (Y/N) stir in the bed beside you, as she first became awake. “Morning, baby,” you told her kissing her temple. “How are you feeling? Did you sleep well?”

“Better than you did.” She replied, her hand caressing your cheek. “Did you sleep at all?”

“A little,” there was no use lying, as you were sure there were bags under your eyes and she’d be able to see right through you. “I was too busy thinking.”

“About?”

“Things that I can do to keep you and Jace safe.” (Y/N) sat up and rested against the headboard, giving you her full attention. “Hear me out, because I know you’re going to hate this. I think we need to hire a bodyguard, just for when I’m not here.” You knew she wouldn’t be crazy about the idea as (Y/N) enjoyed her privacy, but when she didn’t say anything at all for the first couple of minutes, you were afraid she was going to explode.

You sat there trying to read her expression, yet she gave nothing away, until finally after what seemed like an eternity she said, “Ok.”

“Wow, that was a lot easier than I expected.”

“I’m not thrilled about it, but after last night...” She shuddered and you pulled her close into your side. “It wouldn’t be a permanent thing, right?”

“No, just until after the season is over or longer depending on how things go.” If the team ended up winning the cup, you could see keeping someone on a little longer. “I’m also going to up the security system here; new locks, more cameras, those kinds of things.” She nodded her agreement.

“That seems smart.”

“I’m glad you agree.” There was just one last piece of information and you knew she was going to put up a fight with this one, but you were prepared. “So, I don’t think I’m going to St. Louis tomorrow.”

“WHAT?” Jace whined and you found yourself shushing your wife as to not wake your sleeping child. “Absolutely not,” she then whispered harshly at you, while at the same time crawled out of her side of the bed. Grabbing her robe, she threw it on and headed out to the living room. You had no choice but to follow. “You’re going to St. Louis if I have to throw you on a plane myself.” This time there was no quieting her.

“Who’s not going to St. Louis?” your mom asked sipping on her coffee as she was curled up on the couch.

“Your son. Can you please talk some sense into him?”

“Babe, I don’t feel comfortable leaving you here alone. Besides I’m sure the team will understand once I explain what happened.” You told her while trying to take her in your arms, only she wasn’t having any of it.

“You just told me you’re hiring a bodyguard, so I won’t be alone.”

“Yes, I’m going to do that, but leaving tomorrow won’t give me enough time to find someone I can trust. I’m sure by game five, we’ll have everything in place and I’ll go then.”

“You’re being absolutely ridiculous at the moment. There is no need for you to stay here. Jace and I won’t even leave the house if that will make you feel better, but you are getting on that plane.” (Y/N) crossed her arms over her chest, a move that you usually found endearing, except when her anger was directed at you. “Your team needs you.”

“And what about my family? Aren’t you two more important?” She didn’t say anything to that. Really what could she say, she and Jace were your world, not hockey.

“Let’s just calm down for a second.” Your mom stated, this time sitting up straighter, giving you ‘the look’ she always did when you were a child. “There’s no need for anyone to get upset over this. Tyler, you’ll go to St. Louis with the team, just like you planned before this happened.”

“But…”

“No, let me finish.” Your mom interrupted. “I’ll stay here with (Y/N) and Jace, so you don’t have to worry.”

“That’s awfully sweet of you Jackie, but you should go see your son play as you planned. Jace and I…” This time it was (Y/N) who was cut off.

“There’s no arguing this one dear. Tyler’s right. You shouldn’t be left alone. I’ve seen him play more than my fair share of games. It won’t hurt to miss a couple.”

“No offense mom, but you wouldn’t hurt a fly. I’m not leaving the three of you here alone. I’m not going and I won’t hear anything more about it.” You were tired of everyone else making decisions for you. “This is my family and I’m going to protect them no matter what.”

“What is all the yelling about?” your dad asked coming down the stairs followed closely by both your sisters. (Y/N) continued to just stand there glaring at you, the two of you in a silent standoff now.

“Tyler’s worried about going to St. Louis and leaving (Y/N) and Jace here alone.” It was your mom who finally answered and just as she did, you heard Jace start to cry.

“I’ll get him,” Candace said already heading to your bedroom to grab the baby.

“I’m not worried about going to St. Louis,” you finally replied. “Because I’m not going.”

“Yes, you are.” (Y/N) snapped, her anger radiating off of her now, but she could be mad at you all she wanted as long as she was safe.

She went to the kitchen then and started making Jace a bottle. “This isn’t up for discussion. It’s my choice and my decision is final.” You knew you sounded egotistical and domineering but for god's sake couldn’t they see that this was bigger than a hockey game.

“I don’t see what the problem is,” Cassidy said putting her two cents into the conversation, which wasn’t needed at the moment. “There is another solution.” Everyone turned towards her, multiple sets of eyes just staring at her. “What? It’s really rather simple.”

“Well, don’t just leave us hanging here.” You told your youngest sibling.

“(Y/N) and Jace just go with us to St. Louis.” She made it sound so easy, but then it really kind of was. Jace was allowed to fly, (Y/N) had talked to the doctor about it at their last appointment. The two of you had just decided it would be more practical for them to stay in Dallas, but now them going was the perfect solution.

“It’s not a bad idea,” you finally admitted. “What do you say (Y/N)?” Candace came out then and took the bottle from her to give to Jace. (Y/N) stroked his little cheek, and you could tell that she was thinking things over.

“Ok,” she finally whispered and you had a feeling it was seeing Jace that actually made her agree.

“See perfect!” Cass exclaimed loving that she came up with this plan. “Now can we please go back to sleep? It’s like six in the morning.”

“Yes, go back to bed. The last thing I need is you being cranky.” They were your mom’s words but you had to agree. Cassidy headed back upstairs, while everyone else stayed. “I’ll help you get things ready for the trip (Y/N). Tyler, see if you can book another room for (Y/N) and the baby. Paul, why don’t you see if you can book them on the same flight with all of us.”

“There’s no need for that. They’re going to stay with me and they can just fly on the team plane. I’ll make a phone call and work it out.”

“Ty, we’re not going to inconvenience the team like that.”

“Babe, it’s not going to be a big deal, trust me. Besides, if you’re not with me, I’ll just be worried and then they’ll have a bigger problem than you and Jace being there.”

“But what if Jace gets a crying attack in the middle of the night and wakes the whole floor up? Or what if he’s really fussy on the plane? Or…”

“We’ll deal with it but honestly Jace is going to be fine.” You came up behind her and kissed her on the cheek then rubbed some of the tension that was built up in her shoulders. “I’m more worried about his momma stressing out about things that don’t exist.”

(Y/N) rolled her head back onto your chest and you slid your hands to wrap around her waist. God, you never wanted to let her go, all you needed was your baby boy in her arms and you’d be happy, though you were content knowing that he was only a few steps away with your sister. Your hands tightened around her midsection and she winced, reminding you of the cut that was there and bringing all those fears of last night back once again, not that they’d been far away.

The morning went faster than you expected and then you headed off to the rink. As you expected, Monty and the team were fully behind (Y/N) and Jace coming with you to St. Louis. The rest of the day, (Y/N) and your mom packed what seemed like half the house for the short trip as the whole family got ready to leave in less than twenty-four hours.

(Y/N) had no need to worry about Jace on the plane. Once you were all settled, (Y/N) gave him a bottle right as the plane took off and he was sleeping before he even finished it. It was a short flight so he was still asleep when you landed and checked in to the hotel. You’d had a crib placed in your room for him to sleep in, though (Y/N) had insisted on bringing his own crib sheet and blanket sleeper, along with his stuffed Cash, Marshall, and Gerry. While the room was small it was cozy and safe, and that was the most important thing.

“The guys are probably going to go out to dinner. Did you want to go along or just eat in here?”

She mulled it over a bit before answering. “Let’s go out with everyone.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes, Jace and I will be perfectly fine with about twenty burly hockey players around us, I’m sure. Thank goodness he’s still too young to pick up any bad language.” You both sort of chuckled and you could see some of the tension from the last few days ease away from her. You however were a different story. The short walk to the restaurant had you completely on edge. As you walked down the street, you couldn’t help but scan for anything suspicious. Even Jamie picked up on it, and you saw him move to be on the other side of (Y/N), who was carrying Jace, which helped ease some of your anxiety.

The only time you really felt fully comfortable was when you were finally back at the hotel ensconced in your room, just the three of you. You fed Jace, then put him down in the crib for the night, before crawling into bed with (Y/N). It was early, but you didn’t care. The only thing you wanted to do was hold your wife. “Thank you for coming with me on this trip. You don’t know how much better I feel that I can be by your side.”

“We’re eventually going to have to go back to real life, Ty. You know where you fly out for games and I stay home with Jace.” She was right, but it wasn’t going to be anytime soon. If you made it past this round, there would be two more and you planned on taking her and Jace to every one.

“We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it. Thankfully we’re at the end of the season.”

“Right, but you’re still making a cup run this year. So Jace and I being here better not mess up your playing, or we’ll be on the first plane out.” You knew she was teasing but you’d have a heart attack if she tried to pull that stunt.

“Babe, you know when I go out there, I give it my all. You and Jace being here aren’t going to change that.”

“Well, then we better get some sleep.”

“What? I don’t go to bed this early when you’re not here.” It was true, some nights the two of you would stay on the phone until you both fell asleep which was well after the time it was now.

“Well, what did you want to do?”

“I know what I want to do,” you said wiggling your eyebrows suggestively at her. “But little man over there is kind of killing the mood.”

“You do realize that’s how he got into the world.”

When you spoke them to her the first time, you thought your heart was going to bust it was filled with so much love. That same feeling held true the day of your small court wedding and the day Jace was born. Your love for her had only grown stronger with each day. Only now you knew what it was like to possibly never get to say them to her again. That wasn’t a feeling you ever wanted to have again. So, this time when you spoke them, the words held even more meaning and as you fell asleep, you knew you’d go to the ends of the earth to protect that love.

Reflecting on Superman and Lois season 1

Now that the season is over, its interesting to look back at a very stop start season. Its very difficult for a show to hold your interest with the type of scheduling problems this show had, and in its very first season. When the show was announced, I wasn't terribly surprised but I was also not overly excited. There has been a lot of Superman and Superman adjacent material that has come out before and after the announcement so I did wonder about what they could do new. In addition, while I certainly liked Tyler in his guest appearances in Supergirl, in Elseworlds, and in Crisis, he did feel like the inferior Superman in Crisis when he was opposite Brandon Routh's Superman who really looked and felt like Superman, even better than he did in Superman Returns. However, once the trailer dropped, I was sold. It was clear that the show was going for something a lot more cinematic and a lot more grounded than the previous Arrowverse shows. I did have some apprehensiveness over the teenage boys angle because teenagers can become very stereotypically irritating in shows and given that a good chunk of time was going to be dedicated to them, it was going to be vital for them not be so.

Having finished the season, I have to say that the execs and the writers have pulled off an excellent first season. I don't think I would call it the best season 1 in the Arrowverse. I still love The Flash season 1 over any other Arrowverse season and while I haven't seen it in a while, I love Arrow season 1 as well. This may come at 2nd or 3rd place based on further reflection. I do think its has some issues when it comes to the villain storyline and with the big action set pieces, but the film's heart is set at the right place and the characters are all very likable and you want to see conversations between the characters. That's when you know that the writers are doing a good job when you almost feel that the show should go back to the character moments.

Firstly, the idea of a matured Superman is what works wonderfully well. There is something wonderful about seeing Clark and Lois as a couple who have known and loved each other for over a decade. Closer to two decades I guess. Characters don't quite look their age tbh. Lois would have to be in her early 40's at least. But I can honestly overlook that. Bitsie and Tyler were already a very likable couple in Elseworlds and the show has just used that natural chemistry to brilliant effect. But the big relief was that Jordan Elsass and Alex Garfin are excellent as Jonathan and Jordan. I was initially a little worried that Jordan could be a little much, but both of them were excellent and one of the highlights of the season was the bond between the two brothers. Jordan and Jonathan have conflicts but they are brothers and they love and support each other unconditionally.

Jonathan could have so easily been the douchey, jealous brother but Elsass is honestly one of the mvp's of the season. You really care for Jonathan, even though he arguably has a slightly less meaty role in the story. I think Bitsie Tulloch is outstanding all season. She has shot up very high among all my favorite Lois Lanes. She's very different from the other versions and that makes her stand out. One of my favorite episodes was episode 8, which deals with Lois dealing with memories of her miscarriage along with almost losing Jonathan. She is excellent in that episode as is Elsass. Tyler is wonderful throughout. He's a strong Superman but his Clark is even more endearing. Little things like him being so psyched for the Harvest Festival, how he plays young Clark in flashbacks as someone distinctly different, him meeting Lois and working with her for the first time, the adorable "my mom made it" moment when Superman first saves a kid etc... He just embodies everything you know and love from the character. Wole Parks is another terrific addition. Initially you think he's an alternate version of Lex Luthor but it was genius idea to have him actually be John Henry Irons. There was something innately likable about him even when he was fighting Superman and we thought he was Lex. I loved how they handled the dynamic of being Lois' husband in another world and having a daughter. It makes for an interesting dynamic but it never gets into problematic territory because he is mature enough to know that this Lois isn't his Lois, but they also show his difficulty in dealing with that. I liked the bond he seemed to be forming with Jonathan. And I liked how he came along to be an ally with Superman.

The Cushings are ok. They play an important part in the season with Sarah Cushing being Jordan's love interest and Kyle being a big part of the how the villain story begins, with Lana also being a major character in the story. All three actors are excellent but Kyle does have the stereotypical doucheyness which was a little annoying for the first 10 episodes, however he does redeem himself in the final arc. I hope Lana gets to be a bit more active in the show because she does feel like a bit passive as a character. However, I did find that Sarah and Jordan romance actually pretty cute. Both actors did a nice job making them feel like awkward teenagers, dancing around their feelings for each other. Sam Lane is another character who starts out pretty unlikable but I warmed up to him by the end.

Where I think the show doesn't really work at full strength is the superheroic aspect of the show. The character drama in the show is great. I think it works gangbusters. The superhero plot of it all is a little meh. While Adam Rayner is perfectly fine as Edge/Tal-Rho, as a character he's just not that interesting. There is an interesting perspective there that he's sort of a mirror image to Clark where he got mistreated by people when he landed on Earth and that is how his worldview shaped that way, and he longed for family, but there isn't enough done on a character level with him. As a result, the last third of the season was a little iffy. The whole, build Krypton on Earth felt like a variation of Zod's plot in Man of Steel. The method is different but the eventual outcome is the same. I also don't know why all Kryptonians, apart from Lara, are homicidal maniacs, when they are said to be a peaceful race. The arc also becomes repetitive because there are like three climaxes. And I feel the finale was the weakest climax of the lot. Episode 10 or 12 would have served as better finales with a little tweaking. If I remember correctly, the original order was for 13 episodes and it got extended to 15, so this might be an explanation to why it feels this way. The action is fairly by the numbers. While it looks like there is clearly more money on display here than say for Supergirl or The Flash, the action scenes aren't particularly exciting or inventive.

While I am not super high on the finale, I am mostly happy with how things wrapped up. I think they should have had Tal-Rho die tragically because I really don't think he's interesting enough to be brought back again. The arrival of Natalie Irons will surely be a source of some emotionally charged scenes. i hope there is some character bonding between the her and the brothers. Jonathan seemed pretty interested in meeting her when he saw videos of her. I do wonder how the show will continue to incorporate Smallville as a setting. Season 1 obviously had a very specific plot based reason to be in Smallville, given Edge's plot was based in Smallville. But I can't imagine every big bad will have Smallville based plot. But the characters are all settled in Smallville, with the Cushings and Lois buy half the Gazette and running it with Christy. So that's going to be an interesting balancing act that they have to do. I hope they can bring in some traditional superheroics as well because Superman rogues gallery is rich enough. Out of the episodes, I think 6-8 were my favorites, and the flashbacks in episode 11 were incredibly charming. While the season is not flawless I don't think it completely nailed the superheroic heights that it was aiming for, it was a really entertaining season of tv. An 8/10 for me.

Why you should read it:

As much as I can appreciate a good AU, nothing makes my heart sing like a good canon-divergent fic, and this rewriting of TVD Season 3 has EVERYTHING.

It takes off from the Episode That Doomed Us All (aka, Caroline's 18th birthday), but with a twist: the second Caroline bites into Klaus' wrist, he realizes she is his mate. From that point on, the two of them start to experience a load of things - shared emotions, pain, cravings. The most significant of all is that Caroline is hungry for his blood, to the point she needs it just to stay alive. A consequence of a mating bond that demands to be completed. It won't be, however, until Klaus has marked her back, but he decides not to take it by force, instead letting her dictate the rhythm of their growing intimacy. Caroline has no idea what's going on, of course, but she finds herself drawn to him in ways she cannot avoid - and, much to her surprise, she realizes it's not all weird sensations and cravings. The more time she gets to spend around Klaus, even as reluctant as she is, the more she realizes she does not find him nearly as terrible as an evil dude of his calibre should be.

The way @euvixen weaves the whole of season 3, with all its major Klaus-related plot points and all those beautiful moments that have ruined us forever (seeing as, seven years later, we're still here) is a thing of WONDER. She keeps enough of the show, adding her own spin to it, and makes everything SPARKLE. It's so well written and so well crafted, and I simply could not stop reading. I love, love, love that despite the fact Klaus is his well-documented trash-for-Caroline self, he's not at all happy about this development, and his conflicted feelings are so interesting to read, and so, so IC. I love a well written Klaus, when he's not magically turned into a puppy or a prince charming type of character. @euvixen 's Klaus is irresistible, charming and yet temperamental and dangerous in just the right measures. And oh! The way she describes his struggle with ruling over his recently-conquered wolf side is PERFECT! I had honestly never read a story that treated that in such a way, almost like Klaus' wolf is this second entity inhabiting his body and making all these demands that drive him out of his mind, split between how desperately he wants to give in to its animalistic instincts and the pleasure he drives from the struggle and subsequent pleasure of having wrestled it into control.

I talk about Klaus, but Caroline's also amazing! It's everything I've always loved about her character, and built in a way that gives her more agency, apart from her friends and Tyler. Her newly found craving for hybrid blood and all the time she spends with Klaus means Caroline has a secret she can't share with the others, which makes her majorly conflicted, but also much more independent within the story. Suddenly, it's not about Klaus wanting Elena, or Klaus controlling Tyler, or her approaching him to serve as bait anymore. It's Caroline making her own decisions, for herself. Of course she's still loyal and caring because that's the fabric of who she is, but I for one always longed to see a moment when Caroline would have a chance to consolidate all that growth and character development into a story line on the show, and that never happened. I absolutely LOVE this Caroline, who's endearing and strong-willed and inherently good, but also learning how to see past the black-and-whiteness of her morals.

And Kol! I don't care AT ALL about Kol, but all the parts with him here had me cackling. The dialogue is so spot-on and so funny! I swear to God, if this had been real Kol, I might've liked him better. I think this is Kol as he was intended to be, but the show's execution butchered him. @euvixen to the rescue!

You can see the mark of a great writer and a well-thought out and built story when it GROWS as it advances. There's never a moment when I felt frustrated or like the story had slowed down. Everything that happens caused an impact, and it flowed SO nicely. By the time I reached chapter 10, I had ALL THE FEELS SCREAMING inside of me!! There were many moments I loved to bits, but I won't go into details because spoilers. I'll just say that the first chapter is a thing of ART and probably one of the best opening chapters I have ever read.I was hooked before I'd reached the halfway line.

If all that is still not enough to convince you, it also has A++++ sexy times, folks!

The best of season 3, made even BETTER. Honestly, this is flawless.

thinking abt constant contestant verse and about how lilian’s trauma would Manifest in it. (under a cut cause it got so long, my god)

i definitely feel like after lilian got out of season 1, she started craving that adrenaline again. she wanted the kind of fire-forged bonds that she could only feel by going through a life-or-death situation. it was sort of like gambling with her life — which, ironically, is exactly what russian roulette is. so when she got the letter from joey, she kept thinking, like, “well, i have nothing to lose but my life,” and she could so easily have stepped away from it all, but she just couldn’t fathom living life as normal after that night.

so she went, and she disguised it as being concerned about joey, for sure, but i think her motives were more trauma-motivated. and i think she realizes what she’s gotten herself into after the first challenge, when lauren doesn’t come back and alex starts screaming and crying. it’s probably then that it starts to really kick in, that she’s using this death game for cheap adrenaline when people’s lives are getting torn apart and that they’re losing real people. and in a way, that’s when she starts fixating on joey as being someone like that for her. someone that it would hurt to lose. and she starts pouring her energy into protecting herself and joey (and alex, actually, since she’s projected onto him as someone who is also grieving). and ironically enough, letting herself be vulnerable with joey is what makes her so much more efficient and cutthroat. since he’s all she cares about, she’s able to easily sacrifice virtually anyone else. and that’s why the betrayal challenge scared her — not because she had to betray someone else, but that it was joey in there with her, and she realized that if one of them had to die, she might have just given up and accepted death for him. and she started to confront the possibility that he might not think about her ever again. and why should he? he hadn’t asked her to come along, and she was the one needlessly putting herself in danger. and i definitely think winter would be really hard for her after that, like, even though she goes through two challenges, she’d be so much more traumatized by that than the dark dimension, because it was the first time she had to truly confront her own death since basically season 1.

and it’s interesting to think that she goes through all of this only for joey to die completely senselessly! she’d definitely have cried when burying him, and i think tyler would have tried to keep in touch with her because he sensed that she really cared about him (or at least that he meant a lot to her). so when she hears from likely safiya or perhaps even manny that joey had invited them to go on a mission, she gets really obsessed with this idea of finding him, because she’s never been able to find someone that she’s lost before. so while her season 2 appearance was more motivated by the trauma-born desire to recreate the moment where she and lele held hands and played russian roulette, her season 3 appearance is more motivated by the trauma-born desire to bring back someone she’s grieving — even if it’s not scarlett or her mother that she’s bringing back.

and i think that’s kind of what makes season 3 so insidious because of the way she starts gravitating towards mat instead of sticking so fiercely to joey. mat has a kind of magnetic charisma and i think at first she was just excited to get under his skin, even if she did respect him enough to bring him back from the dead without a second thought. which, by the way, is so freaking cool of her considering that grief is such a core element of her character and such a big part of why she went on the s3 mission anyway despite not being invited. it definitely endears her to mat so much more because of that almost artificial feeling of closeness that reviving him brings. but then when the two of them went into the funhouse together, that artificial closeness becomes genuine closeness, because she’s again forced to confront death, and mat is there to comfort her as she breaks down. and that alliance they forge when they go through the funhouse really sort of cinches it for her that she wants to survive, and that she wants to do so with joey and mat specifically.

and of course, there’s the final death challenge where she sacrifices herself for mat! it’s her big crowning heroic moment, and i’m sure she was thinking about matt and lele when she pulled the trigger. about how matt couldn’t kill sierra and how lele shot herself in russian roulette. and i’m sure it felt like the most sickening and wonderful and godawful conclusion for her, and that on some level, it just felt so good to not have to do any of this anymore.

but then she woke up and realized that there is something after death, and that she’s being held in purgatory while joey and mat are among the living. she’s especially scared now that her well-kept secret of being part of every game so far has now officially fallen apart, since everyone there knows her as being part of their season. at this point, i don’t think lilian is really attending to anything that’s happening. she’s more on autopilot, and she’s acutely aware that the people she so desperately wants to see (lele, matt, teala) aren’t there with her. she is most scarred by the guardian angel challenge, obviously, since she was part of it and because she remembers joey being upset that she was voted in and of course she remembers mat trying to save her. she’s also finally killed in a challenge and revived, and that’s something that she would cling to.

god there’s just so much to say and i keep thinking about how her trauma Fucking Gets Her and how messed up she’d be post-s4, especially since joey is in pandora’s box and she’s just gotten so attached to the concept of him that she doesn’t know how to exist without him! however i kind of want to believe that she wouldn’t even let him stay back she’d physically drag him out of the portal if she had to — either that, or stay back herself.

So Klaus is referred to as “Nik” by mainly two people—Kol and Rebekah. This makes sense because they are his younger sibilings and they have known him their entire lives. Now, full disclaimer: I am very picky about the fanfiction I read. I absolutely love fanfiction, and I appreciate every person who takes the time to write the stories they come up and is gracious enough to share them with the world; however, it is really easy for me to be taken out of a story (one that is supposed to be canon or canon divergent) when characters are really OOC. Examples of this are: Elena being treated like a whiny homewrecker, the Originals being uncharacteristicly friendly or caring, Tyler being portrayed as being annoying because he has a vendetta against the man who murdered his mother and made him a slave, etc. It’s just not my cup of tea. One thing that has always frustrated me in the occasional fic I’ll try to read revolves around people calling Klaus “Nik.” I encountered this a lot in my younger days (I first watched The Vampire Diaries when I was a tween) and I was a Klaroline shipper. Now, I understand that the ship is narrative trash, and I no longer ship it. I’m getting really off point, but some of these fics had Klaus allow Caroline or whoever else call him “Nik” and it always bugged me. There is only one fic (I believe) that you have written where Elena calls Klaus this nickname and it is chapter 5 of bite-sized. I’m not exactly sure if that was a choice on your part or if it was the prompt (cuz the opening sentence is where it’s used), but I really like your character analysis and wanted to know what your thoughts on this topic are. Would Klaus ever let Elena call him “Nik” ? How does that come up? Whose idea is it and why? Also, I note that only in FE is “Nik” spelled like “Nick”. Is there a particular reason for this? Thank you!

Well, first off, I do agree, what characters call each other is important. I click off of fics for the same reason.

To answer your question, the “Nik” in chapter 5 of Bite-Sized is from the prompt I was given-- almost all of Bite-Sized is based on the fic prompt game “give me the first line and I’ll write a ficlet for it” so the prompter was the origin for that. Otherwise, you’re right, I never have had Elena use that name, and it’s on purpose.

So, to me, it’s not really so much about Klaus “letting” Elena call him Nick as it is about the fact that I don’t think she would ever think to.

Elena has a really different relationship with Klaus than either Rebekah or Kol-- obviously. For Bex and Kol, there’s that “younger sibling intimacy” that gets established through the nickname, and also that thing where they’re going to completely ignore the nickname their brother chooses for himself and use the familiar nickname-- maybe even the one their mother used for him when they were small?

For Elena, the name Klaus isn’t just Klaus as in the individual-- I think that name holds so much weight and terror and dread in it, because it’s the name of that formless nightmare that was her inevitable fate hanging over her head for months and months and months before she ever knew him. In my fics, when she names him, especially when they’re having an intimate moment and she uses his name, it’s almost like it’s an acknowledgment that the person she has become to close to is also the same person who is all of her worst fears embodied. It’s a nod to the fact that she’s allowed herself to become sucked in, and a reckoning with who she’s given her heart to. I very much like that idea that by calling him “Klaus” she has to confront her actions and who she is really doing this with again and again.

I’m also really particular about Elena calling him Klaus because that’s the name Klaus chooses for himself (”Niklaus is the name my father gave me. Please, call me Klaus”). There’s a lot in his character about forging his own identity and I like to reenforce it in text.

(Elijah therefore choosing to refer to his brother as Niklaus packs a punch-- he’s constantly denying Klaus’s attempts to forge his new identity by going back to the other name-- I’m sure there must be times in the show where Elijah does call him ‘Klaus,’ but all the Niklauses ring much more loudly in my ears, so.)

As for why I chose “Nick” instead of “Nik” for FE-- well, originally, I didn’t. I realized that I had gone back and forth in different chapters, and that I had to make a writing choice. I decided on the English “Nick” spelling for the simple reason that the first time we hear that nickname, it’s in Chicago in the 1920s. Bex and Klaus are having an American phase, and that name in that setting immediately put me in mind of The Great Gatsby (even though the flashbacks are set a few years prior to the book’s publication). It made me think about how the Originals are constantly changing and adapting the details of their identities to suit time and place-- how they’re cultural chameleons. I’m very fond of the idea that they’ve changed their names over time-- that maybe Elijah used to be Ilya and he’s anglicized it, or in this case that Klaus used to be “Nik” and it’s changed over time to “Nick.” This was my little nod to how slippery those details are with them. It’s significant too that Rebekah in particular is the one calling him that, because at least when the fic started, she was coming directly from that 1920s mindset (whenever I have Rebekah use an idiom, I try to find phrases that were popular from about the late Victorian era-the early 20s for this very reason-- although, obviously she’s adapted in the four years since her awakening). I’m pretty back and forth in my fic in general whether I think it should be Nik or Nick-- either works in my opinion, but I do like the Nick spelling quite a lot as a reference to that time and place where we were introduced to it.

A note on a couple of other things that drive me crazy in terms of who calls whom what:

There’s a very short list of people who might call Rebekah ‘Bex’ (Elena certainly never does!) (in fact, I would limit that list to Klaus, Stefan, and Kol)

It’s not canon but I do think Elena might get called Lena by some of her oldest friends-- really, Tyler, Matt, Caroline, Bonnie, maybe Jeremy (depends on his annoyance level with her)

And finally, the big big big thing that makes me stop reading fanfiction with Klaus in it faster than any other: what he calls people. I notice the big trend is to have him call people “love.” I’m definitely guilty of that in my earliest wranglings with the character. But y’all. He doesn’t use “love” all that much, or every time he’s referring to someone. It! Drives! Me! Crazy! OTHER characters do that, but not Klaus! What he says more often are “sweetheart” and “my dear.” (And I like to have him also use “dearheart” because it’s along the same lines, and I love it, so there.) He also does use people’s names. One of the things I most insistently edit myself on is making sure I’m not overusing any of Klaus’s various “endearments,” and that I keep those separate from, say, something Rebekah might say, like “darling.” Also, the thing about those endearments: they’re usually really off-putting and a sign that he’s not taking whoever it is seriously. It’s his weird intimacy thing he does when he’s in actuality being dismissive of the person (always a woman in the show? I can’t think of any instances where he calls a man any of these endearments, but please correct me if I’m wrong!)-- “Are you ready, my dear?” being the one that always pops up in my mind with huge fog horns.

A little FE detail which I thought was so sneaky (and was maybe too sneaky because no one has commented on it yet) is that Klaus never refers to Elena as anything other than her name from the moment he awakens from the daggering in chapter 41 onward. To me, that’s the most telling thing of all-- the constant, constant reassertion of her name-- her individuality-- her her her-- over and over and over again.

For once Mjestamode as part of the exchange got invited to HSA into the relinookton dormitory for a day. Because they were guests they could stay in the dorm however at night Lucas walked around the dorm and found Tyler sleeping on his work place... nearly finished with a sketch of a new thing for his collection... He was tempted to wake him but then he heard him sleep talking.

“Ngh... need to cut fabrics... need to sew them together...”

He did stay a little and listened to his sleep talking, it was kinda cute how he recited some of his work in sleep... one things surprised him.

“what do you know... Lucas would understand me... I rather work with him.”

Hearing his name in his dream, what was he thinking about, as he noticed Tyler was about to wake up he quickly left.

Hello! Could I get headcanons for the main 10 with a Scholar who likes to leave love letters around for them to find?

Yes! 💗 and thank you for the request ✊ I'm not sure if they're already dating or not? I'm gonna assume they are. (This turned out to be so long! I'm gonna flood the tags again...)

Alistair

- first time you gave him one, it was on his desk

- he tried to read as swiftly as he could, but as he was reading through it, he started getting weird looks from the other students

- not surprising, he was grinning the whole time

- Raquel tried to look over his shoulder

- "Oooohhh~ what's that? A love letter? You're so popular with the ladies haha."

- he immediately hides it and stuffs it in his bag

- "Psh. N-no? It was just uhhh... homework!"

- poor boy sucks at lying

- "Of course, I'm sure everyone smiles like that at homework."

- Alistair keeps on giving you glances during class

- he didn't have the time to read all of it but he did see that you signed it and your handwriting is really recognizable

- afterwards, he quietly reads it in his room

- his heart races at each word

- comes to your room as soon as he finishes reading it

- "Y/N I came here to th- than- uhhh? Yeah! To thank you! Haha..."

- is laughing out of nervousness

- comes in class 20 minutes late and gets detention from Tadashi but to be honest, he doesn't even care anymore

- When he walks in, he gives you a subtle look but you know what that look means

- even though you're mortified, you do so anyway

- she often lends you pretty little boxes with cookies in them

- but when you have to give the box back to her, you get an idea

- you put a love letter in the empty box and give it back to Claire

- she discovers it in the evening when she opens the box, expecting to only find crumbs you left behind

- blinks a few times and closes the box

- opens it again and the letter is still inside

- she thinks "it wasn't a hallucination!"

- reads it really slowly because she has to stop at each sentence to calm herself down

- the next day she gives you the box again with the new cookies she baked yesterday

- runs away as soon as you take the box

- you open it and there's a letter on top of the cookies, it's a response to your letter!

- seems like she was too shy to tell you in person

- to fit the theme of the letter: the cookies are heart-shaped

- you guys keep on exchanging letters through the box and it becomes a habit between the two of you

- since she doesn't have a roommate, you slide the letter through the small space under her door

- finds it on the floor when she gets back to her room

- she probably doesn't care much about love letters

- she always thought that it's childish and extremely ridiculous

- that is until you gave her one

- the really first time you gave the letter to her directly or else she wouldn't read it, not knowing that it was from you

- she's all proud of herself while reading it

- she agrees with each statement but still blushes

- "Of course I'm gorgeous! You didn't have to write that part..."

- she's actually a sucker for books, especially from the romance genre

- you make her feel like a heroine from one of those books and she's secretly really happy about it

- but she'll never admit that of course

- after a while she gets inspired and tries to write one herself

- she thinks "I'll show you how it's done!"

- ends up getting really embarrassed at the thought of you reading the letter and doesn't give it to you until the end of the year

- after multiple attempts you somehow managed to sneak the letter in one of her sketchbooks

- too bad you couldn't see the surprise on her face when she found your letter

- she wanted to work for a few hours and brainstorm ideas for some new outfits

- but her plans went out of the window

- she read it. Put it on the side and started thinking about you during a solid 20 minutes

- wants to thank you but doesn't know how to do it without sounding like a little kid

- decides to send you a text for now, but she'll also write you a letter later

- "Thank you a lot for the letter. I really appreciate it."

- thinks that maybe it's a little bit too cold so she adds a heart emoji at the end

- cringes to herself while sending it

- gets back to work but sometimes she draws your face on the side

- scribbles all over it when she realizes what she's doing

- "This is not professional! If I have to show my sketchbook to someone and they see this, they won't take me seriously..."

- decides to write you a letter first or else she won't be able to focus

- This is a hard one

- Raquel always moves from place to place without stop so it's hard to be sneaky with her

- eventually you slip the letter in her bag but you don't know how much time it'll take for her to find it

- like you thought it took her a few days

- when she did, she was very vocal about it

- she ran to you and almost jumped on you

- hugs you and thanks you hundreds of times

- becomes much more flirty, she was already confident but now it's even worse (or better? 😌)

- puts the letter on the wall of her room and shows it off to Claire

- "Look at that Claire! It seems like my godly charm cannot be stopped."

- Raquel starts carefully checking her bag everyday in hopes of finding another letter from you

- and even when she doesn't find anything, it gets her into a working mood

- "Might as well do my homework I guess..."

- becomes much more responsible with homework now that she checks her bag everyday

- your love literally helped her to get better grades

Tadashi

- This was a risky mission

- you had to sneak into the student council room and leave it on his desk

- they had a meeting this afternoon and Tadashi has been in a bad mood lately

- Well, to be fair he's always done with everybody's BS but this time it was worse than usual

- wants to read it but he's having a meeting

- he teases you with endearment and massages your back to thank you

- asks you if you'll write more (because he loved it) and you promise to do so if he promises to take more breaks

Tegan

- Tegan often invites you to play videos games with him (or to marathon some shows/anime/movies/whatever)

- you left the letter behind for him but he didn't catch the drift

- goes to your room to give it back

- "Um... you forgot this, I think..."

- you tell him that it's for him

- "Wait, really? You can just text me, you know? It's quicker and way easier than writing letters."

- after classes are over, when he's working on a new painting he spends almost all of his time in the art room

- that's when you strike!

- you know he has a habit of sitting in the corner of the room so that's where you leave the letter

- honestly, he was in a slump lately because he felt like he was doing a really half-assed job with his new art piece

- but your letter gave him so much motivation that he finished the painting in a day

- "This is crazy Y/N! Reading your letter gave me the same rush as drinking 5 monster drinks in the span of 2 hours!"

- "Uhhh... Please don't do that?"

- laughs at how worried you look and asks you to write more to give him strength

- you say no at first but he pulls out your letter out of his pocket and starts reading it out loud in the middle of the hallway

Just random comments in the Times Interview. :)

They say they loved writing the book together - although Hillary drove her daughter mad by writing her parts in longhand.

I heard this in Stephen Colbert's show and still gets me every time. LOL. Hillary is such a treasure. I am sure it might drive Chelsea crazy but since she can’t do anything about Hillary’s ways, she just takes it. hehe.

They sit side by side on a sofa, and while each one talks the other turns to gaze with rapt pride.

Oh, my gosh, this is so evident in their interviews! It really makes me “aww” every time Hillary or Chelsea look at one another. They really do adore each other.

Frictionless maternal adoration seldom exists outside fairy tales - so at first, I mistake it for yet more evidence of the unauthenticity of which the Clintons have so often been accused. The more they talk about their relationship, though, the less this cynicism feels plausible.

I am not sure why people have the impression that the Clintons are cold and not loving towards each other? I mean, dude, have you been reading their books? Have you been paying attention? :|

"Is emergency nanny" no one of her roles? She bursts out laughing. "I have played that role, yes."

Aww, this is so cute! Imagine her and Bill taking care of their grandchildren.

"...But I definitely notice treats happening. And I just have to let that go." There's a playful mischief in her mother's voice I've never heard before as she protests, "Well, I mean when your grandchildren want pizza for lunch and dinner, I don't see anything wrong in giving them pizza for lunch and dinner."

LOL, Hillary. I think it’s kinda typical (or where I live) that grandparents spoil their grandkids. It’s so endearing to know this.

"But at the top of either would be a wish that she could ease her daughter's burden of responsibilities. so she could get more sleep."

Awww, this tugged at my heart. I love it when Hillary shows her material love for Chelsea.

About Hillary staying in her marriage as the gutsiest thing she did. "I'm so overwhelmed by my mother's answer that I am a bit out of words. I'm just so proud to be her daughter." I ask why she'd been so surprised by her mother's answer: "It's clearly an incredibly painful time in our family's history and not one that we have spoken about together publicly, though of course, we've talked about it a lot privately. So I just didn't expect that to be the answer in that moment. But on reflection it seems obvious that it would have been."

Bill is now pretty absent from public life. He and Hillary live between Little Rock, New York and Washington, and appear to lead quite separate lives; the days of Billary are long gone. It seems incredibly that we know so little about their marriage now, when its dramas were once played out so publicly, the most intimate details of Bill's extramarital sex life - the stained dress, the cigar - all over the media. Even though the couple are seldom seen together nowadays, we hear no reports of anyone new in either her or Bill's life. Whether this says more about his self-restraint, or the family's power to control the narrative, is just one of the many Clinton mysteries.

Are you frigging kidding me?! I am not sure if we are just so updated with Hillary and Bill’s whereabouts (hello, stalking skills) but I really find this ... false? We’ve seen Hillary and Bill together. Although there are times that they may have their own events to attend, I still doubt that they are living separately. Plus, hello their recent pictures together at the launching of Tyler Perry Studios - so don’t me. HAHAHA. But I think it’s just a wrong impression like what others say about them living separately and that they have an open marriage. I’m seriously still puzzled why people don’t believe that Bill and Hillary can also have a discrete and private marriage without clinging to each other’s side all the time?

Anyway, there are no satisfying these people. If they see Hillary and Bill together being close or sweet they think it’s all an act, but if they don’t see them together, they will assume they are separated. LOL. So what now?! HAHAHAHA

But yeah, wow, my rant. I really don’t believe this. I think Hillary and Bill are very much together and really just private.
