How to Heal after a Cheating Spouse
Betrayal from a loved one would cause a mix of emotions unlike any other: vitriol, grief, disappointment. In this column, relationship counselor C. Pardalis details the steps needed to move on.
The first ever step that nobody ever wants to hear is forgiveness. Forgiveness isn’t done for your spouse’s sake- neither does it mean that you have to maintain a relationship with them. It’s about making peace with the pain of the past and moving forward.
Honey closed all the tabs in their browser and shut down the laptop. Every website said the same thing- to forgive, forget, and be the bigger person. Pain simmered in the hollow of their chest. They stared around themselves and noted the take-out boxes on the table. Abandoned laundry piled high on top of the dining room chair- how’d it even get there?
The room could use some cleaning. They were expecting a guest, after all.
In thirty minutes, Guy will arrive at the front door- as if he’s a visitor and not someone who’d lived in the complex for the past twenty years. Had they been younger- had they cared more, they probably would’ve been angrier. Tossed all of his things when they found out- when they saw the mark on the side of his neck, the pair of tickets for a vacation they didn’t book, the foreign smell of cologne sticking in the inside of his jacket. But they didn’t- and instead held onto his things for him to pick up after the divorce had been finalized. Time flew in the blink of an eye and papers were signed.
They’re older. Possibly wiser- but they think they’re just tired of it all. Or maybe they were looking for an excuse to get out of the relationship, anyway. It didn’t matter anymore. Honey quickly folded and put away the laundry in a mechanical way, their hands moved faster than their mind could catch up.
Honey looked at the inside of their closet- a row of newer, sleek designer clothing came into view. They bit the inside of their cheek as they decided on what to wear. They came a long way ever since they began dating him- no longer the college student living in cramped, shared dorms, but someone with a sizable enough salary to afford some luxuries.
Of course, that was nothing compared to Guy the best-selling author, award-winning screenwriter. Everything had its costs, they supposed. They hated to admit it- but they should’ve seen it coming. The success- the downfall. The way it crashed and burned for them.
Try dating yourself, the article said. Make an effort to treat yourself well and find confidence like how you would a partner.
They picked a matching set- a navy-blue, cashmere suit and jacket. Honey looked at themself in the mirror and saw signs of aging. They also saw the bags under their eyes from sleepless nights. Nothing some concealer couldn’t fix. They straightened their jacket and fastened a watch to their wrist.
There’s nothing to prove, Honey reminded themself. But they knew that it was a lie. They spritzed perfume on the inside of their neck. They were dressed as if they were going somewhere-when ten minutes ago, they were lounging in their sleepwear, unable to get themselves out of bed. They wanted to look like they were doing well. Unaffected. Like the twenty years that went down the drain meant nothing to them.
If Guy wanted to sleep around- then so be it. They’re a prize that he’d regret not treasuring.
Honey straightened their posture and twisted their defeated expression into something more neutral. It didn’t last long, as they sighed and went back to their sagged shoulders and hurt, pathetic gaze. They’d play the part when he’s here. It’s exhausting to keep up the facade when they felt nothing but confident, around them remnants of what used to be.
Their wedding ring sat in the same drawer they kept their watches. They should pawn it off soon.
Focus on personal development. Improve yourself and stick to a routine. It’s easy to fall into a rut when grieving the ending of a relationship, especially due to your partner’s mistake.
Honey was the healthiest they’d ever been- yet it’s the worst they’ve ever felt. They go on runs in the crack of dawn and hike on the weekends. They’ve tried everything an acai-bowl eating, veganism-practicing LA native would do: pilates, yoga, hot yoga, crossfit. The post-exercise endorphins would soothe them momentarily, but soon the grief of it all would crash into them like a wave against the cliffs and they stood, heaving on the floor like an animal.
It’s ironic how they were the happiest when they would barely sleep and eat anything that they could afford at the time- which wasn’t much. When Guy would excitedly bring pizza for dinner when they knew that he’d pay for them out of his own paycheck. He’d say that he made it especially for them, and the worst part was that it was true. He put onions because he knew they liked them when he didn’t- put up with the horrors of pineapple on pizza when he found it disgusting.
Honey swallowed and fought the incoming tears. Fuck.
A series of knocks echoed through the apartment and they straightened themself. A picture of serenity and composure. The door swung to reveal the person they’ve been dreading.
“Hey,” he greeted, somewhat hesitant. He had the nerve to look sorry. Anger boiled in their stomach and took purchase in their diaphragm as Honey dissected the man in front of them.
At forty-five, he was definitely still attractive, the half-up, salt-and-pepper hair and unshaved stubble giving him an air of aged wisdom. But Honey just thought that he looked weary, the well-tailored, expensive suit doing a good job of hiding his defeated sort of pride. They have that in common.
It’s been a difficult year.
“Your things are in the boxes near the couch. I packed them so you can just take them away,” they said, curt and flat.
“Okay,” he replied, tight-lipped. They could feel the sadness emanating from him- it reminded them of the night of the confrontation- when he broke down and said that they should leave, because they deserved better. And they do, they like to believe that they do. But why is it so hard?
“Your books and CDs- the Star Trek merch is over there, too.”
“Thanks,” Guy muttered. And the two of them stood in a suffocating silence.
“I don’t resent you, by the way,” Honey said, the words practiced, their back turned from him against the backdrop of the city lights from the floor-to-ceiling windows.
“Really.” It was rhetorical, not a question but more of an ironic statement.
Guy gave a weak laugh, like it’s a private joke only he understood. After signing one movie deal after the next, He’s somehow rougher on the edges now, as if any form of gentleness that remained in him was no longer. “I don’t deserve you,” he said, grief-stricken and still as earnest as ever, and Honey could feel the twist of a knife in their stomach.
The article repeated itself in their mind. The first ever step that nobody ever wants to hear is forgiveness.
Fuck that, Honey thought as they tried to hold themself together. Fuck that article. Fuck Guy. Fuck him and his ambitions and the pains of his past for taking the one thing they ever cared about.
What if they don’t want to forgive? What if the pain was so unbearable- it wasn’t like this was a mistake that could be fixed with a good, healthy lifestyle and breathing exercises. Twenty years. Twenty years of seeing him, soft and gentle, yet unrelenting in the pursuit of his dreams of becoming a writer. His hair brushed against their neck whenever he’d lean his head on their shoulder back in the movie nights they had in college. Him taking care of them whenever they’re sick and pissy about it. The late-night drives and the way he’d always have time for them no matter how busy he was.
The light that drained from his eyes, the exhaustion. The way he’d go home in the dead of night, drained and tired and burnt out. The stink of cigarettes and the alcohol under his breath. The articles, the tabloids, the rumors and how they insisted that he wouldn’t do it. He loved them too much to ever leave them for someone else.
Honey collapsed into the floor as soon as Guy closed the door behind him. Heavy sobs wrecked through them as the night wrapped them in its embrace.

Overall experience with going to the Kirby Cafe in Tokyo
Tumblr media
Retelling my personal experience with booking and going to the Kirby café (it's really good)
Reservations
To get a reservation, I had to get to their reservation website asap and sign up for a time. To get a reservation in September, I had to make a reservation early in August. By the time I got to the page, the only time available for the Kirby Cafe that overlapped with the trip was the latest time slot for Sept. 1st. Because my timezone is PST, I had to stay up until 2am to do the reservation.
Hardest part I came across was having to write my name in Katakana because I didn't have any easy access to a katakana keyboard. I was able to find one only and copy and paste it in. The reservation website has an English option, so there wasn't any confusion on my part (though the English was a little broken at times).
They also asked if it was for a birthday and if there was any requests. I said no, however I am curious what would have happened if I lied and said yes.
Emails
After booking the reservation, I got an email confirmation with a code, number of people, and the fact I didn't make any requests for a birthday or anything.
A few nights before I did get an email saying stuff about a time change, which alarmed me, until I saw the email say the last time to change reservations was in 2021. It was an email from Covid times, and my time slot for the Kirby Cafe was still safe.
And then, the night before, I got another email reminder. It said the same thing as the previous email.
Arriving
The Kirby Cafe is located under the Tokyo Skytree, at the very base. It's outside, but it's still semi-connected to the big mall there.
Kirby and Waddle Dee are there to greet you, and you can see Whispy Woods through the window. There was a person who was getting people's reservation stuff. We asked them and they confirmed who we were then told us to come back 5 minutes before our time.
Kirby Cafe store in the mall
Inside the mall there's a separate Kirby Cafe giftshop with slightly different things to the gift shop in the restaurant.
Tumblr media
It's located right across from the Pokémon center. There's some Kirby stuff in there that isn't related to the Kirby Cafe, like a dreamy gears puzzle and some of the newest Kirby light novels (I couldn't read it, but I snuck a few peeks at the Samurai Kirby light novel)
Strangely, there's another store near a different entrance to the same mall that sells Game and Anime stuff that had more general Kirby stuff than the Cafe shop. It's where I got Bandana Waddle Dee! There's also Kirby stuff in lots and lots of stores in Japan, so it's not too hard to find Kirby stuff. The Cafe will also be limited with characters besides Kirby, Chef Waddle Dee and Chef Kawasaki.
That said, the Cafe had lots of cute merchandise only available at the Cafe that was really good. I got this cute metal cup sleeve to keep my drinks cool there and a summer tote bag with Kirby swimming! There's also a Gacha machine with pins and small standees, so I recommend at least checking it out!
The receipt has a random cute Kirby picture! The clerk noticed the sheer amount of Waddle Dee on my person and said they liked Waddle Dee too and then pointed out my receipt also had Waddle Dee! They also took out the item I bought and confirmed with me that was the one I wanted.
The Cafe store also had drinks to buy! It comes with a kirby straw. Kirby can be taken off the straw and kept. (Kirby straw not in picture). The drink was really good and had jelly and whole pineapples in it. I got to pick the flavor, but not the design on top. (We went to the mall twice. Didn't get drink same day as Kirby Cafe.)
Tumblr media
Going inside
Before we went inside we were sat on stools and the person explained some stuff in Japanese (then to us and another group in English). We could only order 1 Kirby Car cake and 1 lemon Parfait per group. Then we were brought in individually.
There's a photo station near the entrance with Kirby, Waddle Dee and some props! My parents got pics of me and my brother, then they took a picture of all of us (and I was complimented on my Waddle dee bag again)
Tumblr media
We were then brought to our table and given the menu. It had the exact same items as on the website, so I already knew what I was getting. There's also a star that tells you what food comes with souvenirs next to the food with it, and you can choose which souvenier dish you want when there's multiple! We were able to quickly order, then were encouraged to take photos of the store.
We were also given water cups that the staff would refill during our stay. Not a lot of places do that here in Japan, so we were pleasantly surprised and grateful (especially with the heat and humidity)
The store was cute. The music was lively, yet calming. Everyone sounded joyous, including the staff. Whispy woods was dressed for summer and there were Itty bitty kirbys and Waddle Dees everywhere. There was this display with shadows that sometimes had the chefs get sucked up by Kirby or had Chef Kawasaki peek over jokingly. The lights were warm colored and there was fake vines and a chalkboard inside. It very much had a cafe vibe, while still being very kirby themed.
Tumblr media
Speaking of the staff, they were all great. The ones that came to us spoke great English and were very helpful. They all pointed out the Kirby stuff some of us had on and helped explain anything that needed to be to my parents. They made doubly sure what we ordered was correct. There was no chance of miscommunication. They were wearing either Pink and Blue Hawaiian shirts with pineapples on them (no distinction between Gender. There were more blue shirts worn than pink, strangely.)
The food
Oh my goodness the food was amazing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We received our drinks first. I ordered the iced chocolate au lait (basically, iced hot chocolate. Tasted just like chocolate milk) with Waddle Dee art and my mother ordered Doctor Kirbys secret research soda. The secret research soda includes instructions which you get to keep and the staff help explain to you what to do. You mix liquids in a potion and the eventually pour the potion over cotton candy into a big drink. My mom had fun doing it, and apparently it tasted delicious! There's videos of people doing it on YouTube. For privacy reasons, there's no Pic of it here, but rest assured that it was very very cool.
We all received our food at the same time. I only got 1 slice of pizza and my plate with the Waddle Dee burger, so I'll only talk about that.
The Waddle Dee Burger Meal was probably one of the best burgers I ever tasted. When I ordered it, I was apprehensive but willing to try it. I was weary because I'm not the biggest fan of Avocado, Chowder or Mushrooms, and I'm unfortunately very picky with texture.
The stars were tator tots and were as expected. The mushrooms on the pasta were eaten by my mother, so I have no comment on that. The pasta was pretty good, but I didn't quite get a taste of what flavor that star was. The chowder, which my Dad mistakenly told me was clam chowder, was actually a buttery corn chowder and tasted really good.
Now, for the burger itself, that thing bested my expectations. The meat itself was smaller yet thicker than a typical American burger. There were 3 slices(?) of avocado in it, cooked, and the bun was orange. I was fully expecting the sort of mediocre burger back home, with weird chunks in the meat, cooked veggies with a weird aftertaste, and for the bun to taste wholly of artificial flavorings.
The bun tasted like a bun. The color didn't give it a weird flavor. It was just a bun. The avocados were also barely tasted. They tasted good and different to what a normal avocado tastes like, so I assume some flavoring of some sort was added. The meat was fully cooked without any charred bits, and while soft it stayed together. It was moist to a point. I almost wonder if they mixed cheese or something into it. The flavor was great and not overwhelming in any direction. It was also the opposite of crunchy (which is why I'm calling it soft. The food isn't fuzzy it's just not crunchy). Each bite was easy to take. It was really, really good and I ate the whole thing very quickly.
I also had one slice of the four cheese pizza. My family devoured the rest of the half and half pizza before I was able to finish my burger and I had to plead to let me have at least one slice of the pizza. The four cheese pizza also tasted good, but was also soft. While this worked with the burger, it was a struggle to eat the pizza because it was floppy. The pizza was good. No cheese aftertaste which I get on the pizza back home. The honey it was served with worked very well. There wasn't really crust on top.
After dinner they cleared the plates and served desert. I was given the Lemon Parfait, but had to split it with the family because of the layers and wanting some room to try the Kirby Car Cake. The parfait was good! First I struggled to eat it because it looked too good, then I struggled because it was hard to scoop the ice cream on top without it sinking into the jelly around it.
I ended up getting the ice cream onto a different plate with one scoop of the spoon, then handed it to my brother who ate the part of the parfait with lemon slices. It was apparently good but he eats the whole lemon slice when given a drink with it on the side so... the ice cream itself was good. It had bits of sugar and mint on it and was a cool lemon flavor. The bottom of the parfait had more jelly and frozen grapes, which also tasted great.
The car cake jelly was soft. Now I know I keep saying everything at this cafe was soft, and I need to keep saying it because it surprised me. The cake looks like it should be hard given how shaped it was, but it's a bit softer than typical jelly and was strawberry flavored. His feet were bits of apple, the small stars sugar sprinkles, and his wheels chocolate. It also wasn't as sugary sweet as American cake, which is a good thing. It tasted like strawberry and vanilla without any artificially sweet aftertaste. I'd definitely advocate for getting and trying the cake. The cake is also different with the seasons, this one is summer's cake.
Paying
We got our bill along with all the souvenir stuff from the meal (already wrapped in boxes for protection on the plane) and went to the register in the gift shop. The gift shop was small, but had many things Kirby. Only Kirby Cafe stuff though.
I was able to get this cute glasses holder for my glasses. It came with a Waddle dee glasses cleaning cloth and was the perfect size for my bag. I also got this adorable Keychain for my bag (not Waddle dee this time. It was random and I got a sleepy kirby)
Tumblr media
The only not Kirby cafe thing there was Magolor, who was by the cash register. The receipt also had a random kirby picture on the bottom. We paid for our food, said our thanks, and left.
Overall thoughts
It was great and I'm so happy I went. I'd say definitely try to go if you are a big Kirby fan. The food was good and cute. The menu changes with the seasons and games. The staff were nice and probably spoke the most English out of anywhere we had gone. The food itself far exceeded my expectations (and I'm a picky eater) so I'd say try it even if you aren't sure you'd like it.
The cafe is hard to get reservations for. However, I wouldn't feel too sad if you are unable to go. You can still get a Kirby drink and cafe items from the main mall store. There's also Kirby Cafe takeout items, so you can still get food and a souvenir!
The staff are all very nice and sweet, but if you are wearing anything Kirby expect to be perceived. I didn't mind it cause I dressed up specifically to be perceived, yet I know that can be a bit much for the more shy sort.
Everyone also expects pictures to be taken there. I saw people taking selfies with Kirby and Whispy Woods. Don't worry about being seen as silly, everyone there is a Kirby fan.
Anyways great restaurant. Cute vibes, nice staff, great food and amazing location. It was fun :)

In Europe, Pringles has 34 active flavours in seven can sizes (one of which is called “David” for reasons no one can explain). Not all of these flavours are available in every European country – prawn cocktail only really sells in the UK and Ireland, while bacon is found in most places except Belgium, the Netherlands and strongholds of vegetarianism Austria, Denmark and Sweden. Salt and vinegar has spread everywhere except Norway and Italy. “They don’t have the habit of doing vinegar on their crisps; they just eat them plain with salt,” says Julie Merzougui, lead food designer at Kellanova. If an employee in Italy wanted to explore bringing salt and vinegar to the market, they could – they’d simply have to ask. As of yet, they haven’t.
Multiple times a year, Pringles releases limited-edition flavours known internally as “insanely accurate analogues” – Merzougui and Peremans come up with these for Europe. “People think we have the dream job,” Merzougui says (she has dark hair, round glasses and an easy laugh, a personality akin to an experimental flavour – perhaps a chorizo Pringle). Peremans, who has worked at the company for 26 years, has a salt and pepper beard and a Salt & Shake personality. He speaks quietly and pragmatically, but has a subtle playful streak: “My young son, he wants to become my successor.”
Like Lay’s, Pringles starts with data – in Asia, the company uses a Tinder-like tool with 200 consumers at a time, asking them to swipe left or right on potential flavours. Lucia Sudjalim, a senior Pringles developer in Asia, says she does a lot of “social media listening”, observing trends among influencers and bloggers. Kellanova also uses AI, which Merzougui says can predict trends up to 10 years in advance. Things aren’t always this sophisticated though – both Lay’s and Pringles also look at what’s on the shelves in countries they want to break into, copying flavours and identifying gaps to fill.
Yet just because the world wants a flavour doesn’t mean it’s made. In December 2020, scotch egg sales soared in the UK after Conservative ministers ruled the snack a “substantial meal” (providing punters with an excuse to be in the pub under Covid-19 lockdown rules). Peremans was challenged to make scotch egg Pringles and pulled it off; Merzougui says they tasted “really authentic”. Ultimately, however, the potential order volume was not high enough to justify a production run. (This, incidentally, is why it’s hard to get Salt & Pepper Pringles in the UK, even though they’re delicious.)
Another unreleased flavour was part of a collaboration with Nando’s that petered out for reasons Peremans is unsure about. Sometimes, logistics get in the way: the perfectly blended seasoning might clog the machines or create too much dust, causing sneezing fits in the factory. Belgian legislation mandates that every seasoning has to be put through a dust explosion test – it is set alight in controlled conditions to ensure it won’t blow up.
Inside the plant, manager Van Batenburg shows me giant cube-shaped bags of seasonings that arrive ready to be cascaded on to the crisps. At the end of his video presentation, he made a passing comment that rocked my world. We were talking about other crisp companies, big name competitors. “In essence,” he said, “they’re using the same seasoning houses we do.”
I leave Belgium with the names of three seasoning houses Pringles work with. At home, I discover that their websites are obscure – they speak of flavours and trends, but don’t even mention Pringles. I haven’t so much stumbled upon a conspiracy as been invited into it, but I am still shocked. After two months’ cajoling by the Pringles team, two representatives from a seasoning house agree to speak – but only on the condition of total anonymity, in line with their contractual obligations.
“It’s quite secretive,” food scientist Reuben admits via Zoom, wearing a pink shirt and a thoughtful expression (the only crisp I can compare him to is a Quaver). “Everyone has their own crown jewels that they protect.”
As a marketer, Peggy has always found the company’s secrecy “strange”. She speaks clearly, in a way that is reminiscent of a teacher or a steadfast multigrain snack. “It’s always been a bit of a puzzle to me … I was like, ‘Why aren’t we shouting about this?’ But I was told, ‘Oh, no, we have to keep it very quiet.’”
This is because – just as Van Batenburg hinted in Belgium – the seasoning house Reuben and Peggy work for provides flavours for Pringles and Lay’s, as well as other brands. When asked whether their clients know, Reuben says, “They do and they don’t.” “It’s just not really talked about,” Peggy adds. However, this doesn’t mean that a Salt & Vinegar Pringle is flavoured with the same seasoning as a Salt & Vinegar Lay’s. In fact, the seasoning house is strictly siloed to guarantee exclusivity. Reuben’s team work on the Pringles account; the team making flavours for PepsiCo is in an entirely different country. “So the recipe, if you will, of the Pringles salt and vinegar can’t be seen by the other team,” Reuben says.

Cryptid Collection Spotlight: The Jackalope
We're going to be spending this week infodumping about the six cryptids we chose to feature in our Cryptid Collection! We'll be posting about the lore and origins, our thoughts, experiences, and relationships with all of these cryptids, and we encourage folks to share their own!
Today we're talking about the Goncharov of cryptids, the Jackalope!
Tumblr media
👣The Cryptid Collection 🐇Jackalope Travel Poster 👥Cryptid Binders & Sportsbras 🧵Cryptid fabric designs
Myths, legends, and tales of horned rabbits or hares have existed throughout human history and across the globe, from Central America to 13th century Persia and throughout Europe.
But we're not here to talk about those. We're here to talk about the Goncharov of cryptids, the Jackalope.
The lore of the Jackalope is particularly fun because it's a centuries-long exercise in collective storytelling. It's hard to say what the first stories were and where they originated, which is unusual with US cryptids. Even if the veracity of the reports and photos is in question, we do generally know where and when sightings of other cryptids happened, with documented newspaper articles, police reports, and the like. They detail what happened and what the cryptid looked like and where exactly they were spotted.
But instead of dates and locations and detailed descriptions of encounters, what we have for the Jackalope are lists traits, mostly unrelated, all layered on top of each other, each more outlandish than the last. It's easy to see the ways the lore of the Jackalope was told and built upon over and over — a collective folklore invented by anyone inspired to add to it and enthusiastically encouraged and welcomed by the rest.
The Jackalope is a hare, indistinguishable from a normal hare (also sometimes called a jackrabbit) except save for the pair of antelope-like antlers growing from its head — hence the name, Jackalope (not to be confused with the antelope jackrabbit, which is just a normal hare native to Arizona and Mexico). It's a fearsome antagonist of hunters, who have to include stovepipes in their regular hunting gear to wear as leg armor or risk being gored by the vicious Jackalope's horns. But a hunter can leave out some whiskey at night, preferably during a full moon, and wait for the Jackalope to chug it down and they'll have no problem hunting that wily, but now drunk, Jackalope. Which, of course, when cooked tastes quite similar to lobster. When cowboys would sit out in the desert singing songs around the campfire, the Jackalope would sing back to them, mimicking their voices. Or maybe it would sing along, always taking the tenor harmony. Maybe it only did that when there also happened to be a lightning storm. Because, of course, the Jackalope has an affinity for lightning storms, since it can only breed within the microseconds of a lightning flash.
The crowning glory of collective meme of the Jackalope, though, was the brainchild of two brothers, Douglas and Ralph Herrick, in Douglas, Wyoming. According to Ralph, the two returned from a hunting trip in 1932 having bagged, among other things, a jackrabbit which they tossed haphazardly into their taxidermy shop. It landed amongst some deer antlers and Douglas was struck with inspiration. They attached the antlers to the jackrabbit's head, mounted it in the style of a hunting trophy, and sold their newly minted Jackalope for $10 (around $214 today) to the owner of a local hotel who displayed it in the lobby.
That first Jackalope head started a whole Jackalope taxidermy business for the Herricks, which eventually exploded into a modern day Jackalope industry. Books have been written, adding to the meme with winks and nods back to the Herricks and Douglas, WY. In fact both the town of Douglas and the greater Wyoming have enthusiastically taken up the adopted and added to the lore. You can find informative articles about the Jackalope on official government websites. Stores in Douglas sell Jackalope milk. And the local Chamber of Commerce issues Jackalope hunting licenses, which permits the bearer to go Jackalope hunting on June 31st, between midnight and 2:00 AM, but only provided the hunter has an IQ between 50 and 72.
Of course when you read anything about the Jackalope, you'll inevitably see something about Shope papilloma virus. Because even when the meme is obviously a meme, there will always be someone who wants to try to explain what it "really" is.
But we don't think the Jackalope really needs explaining. The Jackalope is the manifestation of the human desire to connect and make a Weird Little Guy and tell each other stories about it.

Ethical Alternatives to Dolls Kill
While Dolls Kill offers kawaii, punk, goth, and streetwear fashions, they’re an unethical fast fashion company that has been accused of stealing designs from small creators. They’ve also been accused of promoting rape and racism (implying that only white people can be goth, selling a Native American headdress as a costume, and supporting police during the Black Lives Matter movement) and having a lack of transparency in how they reduce their impact on people, animals, and the environment. With this in mind, here are some of my favorite alternatives I found (you can tap on the titles to access the sites)
LOUDBODIES
Tumblr media
This Romania-based retailer offers sizes from XXS-10XL, and you can even make a custom order for free if you'd like! Many of their pieces are pricey, but they do offer an affordable line of fashion. Their values include sustainable and recycled materials, made-to-order clothing, low waste production, OEKO-TEX certified fabrics, carbon neutral shipping, body-inclusive models (see above) and locally-made clothing. They also offer worldwide shipping.
NOCTEX
Tumblr media
NOCTEX is great for dark, goth, edgy fashion. They’re based in Canada and ship internationally. Available sizes only include XS-XL, but this retailer uses reclaimed and deadstock materials, and also have low-waste production. They offer many items including tops, dresses, pants, skirts, footwear, and accessories like bags, makeup, and jewelry, so there’s a lot to choose from!
Uye Surana
Tumblr media
For lingerie lovers, this is the place! While they’re based in New York, their clothing is ethically made in Columbia, with cute designs that come in sizes XS-5XL, so it’s quite inclusive! Items include bralettes, undies, stockings, camis, and garter belts, so go on and be adorably sexy, my loves.
KILLSTAR
Tumblr media
Despite being introduced by Dolls Kill, the UK brand Killstar is actually more ethical. In fact, they’ve cut their ties with the brand over the owner’s support of police during the BLM movement. They’ve donated to charities that promote ending racism (whereas Dolls Kill promoted racism to an extent) and they also promote individuality. They offer sizes XS-4XL (from what I’ve found) and they even have men’s clothing!
Broken Promises
Tumblr media
Another brand that left Dolls Kill, Broken Promises is based in California. Offering sizes XS-3XL, this brand offers clothing that caters to skate culture for all genders. Their clothes are also sold at Zumiez, so if you don’t want to shop online and you would prefer to go to the mall, you’ll probably find them there!
Disturbia
Tumblr media
And another UK gothic brand that was promoted by Dolls Kill, this family-owned business has been going strong since 2003. Their website claims that sustainability is “a core value in [their] ethos”, and their goal is to create fashion that doesn’t harm the environment. They’re committed to recycling and reducing their carbon footprint, and all of their leather is false or recycled to reduce animal cruelty. They have a fully traceable supply chain with manufacturers in the UK, China, Portugal, Turkey, and Morocco, all with safe production facilities. Rest assured, your money will be going to a great place.
Cyberdog
Tumblr media
Ravers, this one is for you. Catering to clubbers and DJs since 1994, Cyberdog offers neon and dark streetwear. They’re based in London, and their flagship store is located in Camden Market, so anyone who lives around the area (or would like to visit) can see these rad designs in person! (P.S: A huge downside is that they only offer sizes S-L, so this brand has the smallest size range on here)
Gothic Lamb
Tumblr media
“The home for melanated misfits”, as their designer calls it, is black-owned and offers sizes from S-5XL, making this brand one of the more inclusive ones on this list. The owner, who calls herself Lucy, founded Gothic Lamb in the summer of 2016. She was inspired by brands like Killstar and Disturbia, however, she found that there was a lack of representation at the time, as she felt that none of the models looked like her, so she decided to create her own. While there is a small collection, it’s still a great collection and it’s a great place to purchase from if you like supporting black-owned businesses.
publicspace
Tumblr media
A vaporwave-streetwear brand based in Los Angeles, CA, they support and collaborate with artists to create their designs (hence why they’re named publicspace). Though they have a small collection, their size range is XS-3XL, so it’s mostly inclusive.
Shop secondhand
You can also shop on Etsy to purchase from independent designers. A much cheaper option would be to shop secondhand. Sites like Poshmark and Depop are great for shopping secondhand, especially if you want to buy from fast fashion brands like H&M and Shein without giving them your money. Alternatively, you can go to your local thrift shop (do not shop at the Salvation Army, they are aggressively Christian, homophobic and transphobic) or consignment store. You can give your unwanted clothes and other items to these places (consignment stores will give you a certain percentage of their price for the item) to help people and need.
In conclusion, please do not buy from unethical fast fashion retailers and consider shopping ethically, whether it be for new or used clothes.

The moment i saw temu come up out of nowhere i knew it was gonna be bad.... its just another website selling poorly mass produced products for cheap and most likely paying workers less than the items just like shien and tik tok shop....... there was a similar story with shien stealing accounts from ppl a couple of years ago im not sure if it was bank acocunts or spotify accounts but like this is just history repeating itself
a lot of those companies r the same like from stealing designs clothing art having lead in their clothes shipping ppl bags with bugs in em it’s just kinda obvious ur taking a risk ordering from them like yeah can u get ur product from them if u order? sure but that doesnt mean there won’t be complications or possibility of something going wrong like any app saying you’ll get a free mini fridge and rem shirts and sandals if u order for them and use their special gift codes to buy 10 cent makeup is gonna be unethical thats just obvious and ofc a lotta like fear mongering is bc of these being foreign companies but informing that the reality is they are currently being sued and have been sued multiple times for what they do bc of not being 100% safe places to shop from

Review/Rant: Official Merch Store
General Short Version
Remember how he said he would hire professional artists for the official merch store? Yeah, Landy lied bc of course he did. Pretty sure he designed this stuff himself. I mean, a too big amount of items are his doodles.
I didn't expect much, didn't even hope for merch for my favs, but I expected at least some new SP art instead of recycled art (some art is so old it's still from when the first trilogy was released) and well, text.
And no, Landy's shitty 5-second doodles of Skul and himself don't count as "art". Neither does the skull silhouette on some items. Couldn't even be arsed to add eye socks and nose smh :/
3 pages full of garbage merch. He really went for quantity over quality here.
And to add further insult to injury, the prices of the items he sells are heavily overpriced.
Tumblr media
So yeah, this entire store is a sign of disrespect and balant insult to the fandom. I hope no one buys this.
Long Version
The Notebooks/-pads
Tumblr media
Too much empty space. WAY too much empty space. You couldn't possibly have done this in a lazier way.
The sarcasm one is hardly even SP-related. Plus, he didn't even attempt to pretty the text up a little with typography. He didn't use the 'bold' font for "Caution" which would have been the bare minimum. This doesn't even count as trying.
I TRIED to make the two with characters on it a little better by reducing the empty space, but it's really hard to polish a turd. Especially if ya don't wanna put more than 5 min in lol
Totem Bags
Tumblr media
This store has totem bags, but they are worse than the Kickstarter one. At least the Kickstarter one had text big enough that you could read it from afar. For the text on the new ones, you'll need a magnifying glass.
Clothing
Tumblr media
Some of the text has the same problem as the totem bags: too small to read. The only time text should be that small is if it isn't meant to be read or when it's "if you can read this you're too close" T-Shirt. This applies especially to A6.
If you have B2 you don't need B1. What happened here? Did he have an item amount quota to reach?
A3, B3 and C3 are Landy's shitty 5 second doodles again. Unless they are used to signed the cloths they don't belong on the clothes. Pay for a custom design, you cheap ass scammer!
A4 and A5, the stripe with Skul should be thicker. If it's on a shirt you shouldn't need a magnifying glass to see it. Also, the blue stripe needs more contrast, the blue is eating the black outlines of Skul. The red stripe on the blue shirt... I just really don't like that blue tone and I hate that he doubled down on it. For the website too.
C1 should have had the sold letters bc you can't read it from further away with that effect on top.
C2 at last you can read this one. Not getting any creativity points from me tho. Once again it's just text and probably took him 5 seconds to design.
Now listen, here is what I want instead. I have this zip-up hoodie from Killstar. I love and essentially I want this but in SP.
Faceless One version: The symbol on the front is the Faceless Church symbol. The back is a picture with Mev in the middle and his generals around him and it's done in the style of those stained glass windows you see in Christian churches but black and white. I don't know what I want on the sleeves. Maybe bursts of flames, symbolizing Mev's fire attacks. Or perhaps just parts of the 'Gospel of the Faceless' scribbled along on the arms in English, Latin or even Irish??? Or one arm a snake to symbolize Nef and the other a lion to symbolize Baron as his right and left hand men?
China Sorrows Version: The symbol in the front should be a crest with a scorpion on it. The back image is a drawing of China in the Art nouveau style. The arms should be a roll of paper curling down each arm with various symbols drawn on them, artfully intervening with each other.
Hats
Tumblr media
I wouldn't say that "We don't talk about vampires" is one of the more iconic quotes of the series, but besides that not even an attempt was made at typography. Or like, a little vampire head silhouette with an open mouth and exposed fangs. or even just fangs around the text or anything at all even.
It doesn't assault my eyes, but it's also incredibly boring.
To the people saying they wanted to buy Skul's head: just go to a hat store and buy a fedora. It's gonna be better quality than whatever Landy would smack on the store for a criminal price.
Everything with his face on it
Tumblr media
No. How full of yourself do you have to be to try and sell merch with your face on it. The quotes are awful too
The quotes on the postcards are so awfully 2012 Tumblr "quirky" I'm-not-like-other-people ^w^ edgy bullshit vibes. Wasn't cute when it came from the emo kids back then and it coming from a +50 year old man trying to be relatable to the kids these days is just sad and cringe.
Also, I'm pretty sure by sending people that greeting card is how you end relationships including familiar relationships.
Baby's first InDesign Skull
Tumblr media
It's what it says in the title. Should have just used the iconic Skul logo instead to make it look like SP and less like random shit you can find on Etsy after reaching page 100.
Really should have just used the old school icon. Thee is a reason it's so iconic: it's easy to recognize as Skul and not random skull/skeleton number 5643489. Plus, using the old one is about the same amount of effort as making the new one.
Honestly, it should have been custom art, but the iconic SP icon would be the lesser evil by a far.
On top of hat, black text is hard to read on a red background js.
Also, what kind of chaotic evil alinged bastard uses a metal pencil case???
Prints
Tumblr media
Ngl I always thought the "Mortail Coil" cover was one of the best of the entire series. I also really love the OG "Dark Days" cover. OG book covers as prints? Easy win! Still fucking overpriced tho. Plus the OG covers also would have looked good on clothing, way better than the shit he ended up slapping on there.
As for the collage with all of the characters in it: I always thought it looked awful. The characters were just thrown in there without much thought or care. Also hate that he used the ugly ass SoW Nef instead of the way better-looking Book 1 cover Nef.
Tumblr media
Rainbow Ruler
This isn't even Skulduggery-themed. I feel like HarperCollins told Landy he had to put something in the store for the gays but instead of making something like a cute lil Valkyrie/Militsa pin he just smacked this into the store.
The Skulduggery Apron
The only thing that makes it SP-themed is that they smacked a sign saying "Cooking with Skulduggery" on it. Otherwise, it looks like every other skeleton apron you can get around Halloween.
Coaster
So empty and boring again. It looked way better with the moth eventho it was a "Silent of the Lambs" movie poster rip-off. Still don't know why a skull is the official Sanctuary logo. Seems kinda weird for the good guys. On a meta level: I guess literally EVERYTHING in universe has to revolve around Skulduggery.
Make the Sanctuary seal more interesting and then invert the values so the background if black and the lines are white and this could actually look decent.
Skulduggery Clock
Tumblr media
This looks like a your-photo-here clock that you can order at every random print shop. Here are some examples from HP to show HOW a custom clock for the fans is meant to look like next to it. (Also look at this Thresh watch, it's so good I almost regret not wearing watches.)
Lunchbox and Waterbottle
Tumblr media
Same thing as with the clock. Tho the water bottle also has too much white space.
Mouse-/Gamerpads
Tumblr media
Recycled art again. The mousepads look weird with Val placed smack dead in the middle. Plz apply the rule of thirds and move her a little to the right.
Pillows and Bag
Tumblr media
AGAIN WITH THOSE SHITTY DOODLES Someone tell Landy that if it takes about 5 seconds to draw it does NOT belong on merchendise!
Also, that floating "Bad Magic" Skul really doesn't work on it's own, Just... just use the damn Skul icon if you gotta be lazy.
Final Words
Overpriced lazy garbage that Landy definetely designed himself. No person with self-respect would even consider participating in this cash grab.
It's an insult to every fan, really.
How to fix this? Delete everything from the website, hire a professional artist, go for quality over quantity. A few items that sell really well are a million times better than a bunch of items that don't sell. If the shop goes well you can always expand.
Almost all of the store should have been custom art apart from a few exceptions where old promo art and book covers are used for tops and posters.

🎁Spotlight #4: Rewards🎁
Tumblr media
With only 5 days to go and trifling matters (like the spotlight on the zine we're selling) out of the way, it’s time to dive into what you’re all really here for: backer rewards.
Follow along to learn about our stickers, charms, memo pads and more! But first, the basics:
All $15+ pledges get the digital zine, then more and more extra items the higher you pledge!
Everyone who pledges $1+ gets access to the add-on store, where you can buy individual items!
Check out our reward levels (and back us) on Kickstarter!
Let's get the basics out of the way: the first and most important reward of them all is our zine, available as a digital release or a beautifully printed book! If you haven't looked at our deep dive on the demo yet, save this thread for later.
Tumblr media
Next, our mysterious "digital goodies pack". What's in there? To start: exclusive wallpapers of our characters, a Boba-tan "under construction" banner for your website, and… some emoji?? 👀👀
(We plan to add more to this pack as we—and you 😘—come up with fun ideas!)
Tumblr media
Coming up, one of the most basic and useful programming tools–cheat sheets! You can find many like this (☝️) online, but as far as we can tell, none have hot men on them.
"GIT" the clearly superior version (catboys included) with a $55+ pledge or as an add-on!
Tumblr media
Getting even more physical, time for the Browserland shimeji pad! Born from @essential-randomness's love of dot grids and ererifan915's incredible talent for chibis, this notepad is a great way to keep track of TODOs or brainstorm layouts for your site and beyond!
Sample pages ☝️
Tumblr media
It’s finally sticker time!! We have not just ONE, but TWO sets of stickers for our $55+ backers, or those who select them as an add-on.
First, a sticker sheet with ALL our shimeji (including the previously-unreleased, soon-to-be-colored Localhost team) by ererifan915. So cute!
Tumblr media
And second, this incredible Boba-tan "We Can Ship It" sticker by @kiwipon! Featuring a rubber duck pattern in one of 5 different colors, it's sure to be the envy of everyone's laptops!
Want a specific color? Buy a set of all 5 as an add-on!
Tumblr media
You know what's even better than stickers? Yes, indeed: charms! The Boba-tan "We Can Ship It" sticker is also available in charm form.
Whether on your keychain, your bag, or wherever else your heart desires, it's the ultimate accessory for the fujin/coder on the move!
Tumblr media
But wait, there's more! Thanks to your heartwarming support, we unlocked a few more stretch goals that give our backers even more rewards: first, a set of 5 postcards, featuring art from our zine!
While we haven’t finalized the design yet, here's a sample of what you'll find ☝️
The next unlocked stretch goal is… 🥁🥁🥁 a digital coloring book featuring some of our amazing illustrations’ line art!
Tired of spending time staring at a screen? Print a sheet out, get those pastels out of storage, and color things up! 🖍 Or do it digitally, if you prefer!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And last, but certainly not least, one of the first extra items we unlocked thanks to your generous contributions during our “Git’s Birthday Bash” event: cat boy bath water!
Yes, we're very proud of it. See the original picture we parodied for a sample of what it'll look like. ☝️
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And now… the big ones! If the above is not enough for you, we have special tiers with EXCLUSIVE rewards available. Did you fall in love with the magnificent work of one of our artists? Want one of our writers to insert you or your OC into our fictional world? Back GIT Art/Fic!
Tumblr media
Or maybe, just maybe, you're raring to go explore the world of programming, but are feeling overwhelmed by it all?
If configuring your development environment and other technical questions get you down, back GIT Help & set yourself up for success with the help of our volunteers!
Last but 100% not least: if you truly, deeply believe in this project and have the 💰 to match, back our "producer" tiers to get credited in our zine! Don't want your name? We'll figure something out!
Tiers are GIT Credited ($1k), Kilo Credited ($5k) or Mega Credited($10k)!
…and that’s all for today! Remember, if anything catches your eye, even a $1 pledge gets you access to the add-ons tab. You can check what’s in each tier on the Kickstarter sidebar. Want to upgrade your pledge? You only have 5 days left! Get add-ons too!

Note
Hey Taav! Is there any way you can share tips about selling plushies? Epecifically the process of packaging them up and shipping them off. Do you have to go to the post office to get shipping labels made, or do you do it at home? Any advice would be helpful. Thanks, and keep being awesome!! ~plushie-lovey
Hi!!! Of course!
Shipping labels can be made online at home. If you use this website called pirateship.com you can make shipping labels easily and print them off at home! This website does a pretty good job at getting you cheap rates, but you do have to know the weight and dimensions of the package!
I know if you sell on mercari, they can send you a QR code with the shipping label inside. Like basically you go to the post office, show them the QR code, and they will print the label for you for free!
Packaging plushies is pretty easy too. Just make sure you have either a poly mailer or box that the plushies can fit inside! It’s also important (but not necessary) to double bag the plush. Putting the plushie in 2 bags instead of 1 helps keep it safe/clean/dry in the event that the outer bag gets ripped.
I’ve had multiple plushies come either dirty or damaged because the seller only used 1 bag lol.
You can usually get poly mailers in bulk online for cheaper than at the store. Some of them even have pretty designs!
I think the worst part is having to print labels because ink is so expensive :( but I think some libraries let you print papers for free or cheap!!
I hope this was helpful at least a little!!! I’m not very good at explaining things but I tried my best lol
